Phoenix Cup 2192

RULES
Teams had been asked to name 16 player squads, with upto four reserves.
These sixteen player lists would form the team's available players for the entire tournament, with reserves permitted only to replace injured players between matches.
All matches are to be played 9-a-side, on resized pitches, with halves consisting of twenty-five minutes each.
No draws are permitted in the tournament, and if a match is level at the end of regulation time, two periods of extra time will be played (consisting ten minutes each).
Should scores still remain level, teams will face off in the 35 yard shootout system.
Goals scored in extra time or in a shootout will count toward the final score as normal, and will be reflected in point differential calculations.

FORMAT
The teams will be split into four groups of three, and engage in a single round-robin group stage.
No more than one non-Osarian team may be present in each group.
The top two teams in each group will progress for a chance to win the Phoenix Cup.
The bottom team from each group will be entered into a triple elimination tournament for the Enzo Corradini Commemorative Plate.
Losers in the Phoenix Cup quarter finals would drop into another sub-tournament, for the Duchess' Shield.

Phoenix Cup Final

Hastmead Diamante 2-0 King's League All-Stars

After a thoroughly entertaining tournament, which saaw surprisingly strong performances from Shanak and Barciddia, it came down to the classic Phoenix Cup encounter of King's League All-Stars vs. King's League Champions. The champions prevailed in a convincing 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Marcelo Alonso and Jordan Simpson -- both created by one of the tournament's standout players Niek van Der Smeejin -- in what will almost certainly have potential rivals fearing their potential when the new season begins in a few weeks.

Firewood City's defeat in the quarter final stage at the hands of the All-Stars left them out of reach of the big prize, but they did bring home a piece of silverware -- as is tradition in Firewood, it seems -- by becoming the first ever winners of the Duchess' Shield. The shield, named for the heir to the Osarian throne -- Ayanna, Duchess of Fourge -- is not an honour they will be eager to win again, but with new manager Ronald Ceasar sharing the role with Willem Hamel for the tournament, it was an encouraging start to what many fans of the Fourgian club hope will merely be the start of a new wave of silverware coming their way.

Kryosi invitees Artheim Assassins surprised many with their willingness to get forward in Dynapolis last week, too. The club are known for being defensively solid, as is the custom in Kryosis, but their approach to the tournament hints at a shift away from traditional thinking for our northern neighbours. Despite finishing bottom of arguably the weakest group in the competition, the Kryosi side proved they could be a threat by beating Bayer Schlossberg in the knockout rounds. They still haven't given enough evidence to support proposals of a move to the OFA Leagues, along with nine other top Kryosi clubs, but there are signs that they may well be able to in the not too distant future.

Unsurprisingly, Aquillish representatives Rahobi United finished bottom of the pile, scoring just three goals along the way. However, the minnows were far more competitive than anticipated, losing just 2-0 to the King's League All-Stars, thanks to some inspired defending. The Aquillian national team has recently announced its intent to enter the World Cuppet, which would pit them against similarly talented sides, and while Rahobi -- despite being their best club side -- aren't a strong team by our standards, the players they have would complement many Aquillish players we have seen playing in Osarius, and make their national outfit quite formidable. Eristicean representatives Santorini City were typically Eristicean in their unpredictability. Their seemingly formation-less system and almost anarchic style of play made them difficult for some sides to beat, particularly the well-drilled Kryosi champions, Artheim. While their style is extremely entertaining, in terms of efficacy it is lacking, and provides little for the purist, or the technical footbal lover. The fans at the Benevolence Bowl seemed to like them, though, with many adopting them as a "second team", although this may just have been to spite the Kryosi.

DynaCorp are said to be extremely happy with the tournament and intend to repeat this format next season, perhaps with a larger number of teams and more invitees, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Benedict di Corradi features in Watson testimonial

Benni Watson bowed out of football in style last night in The Cauldron, as he captained an all-star team against Firewood City in front of a near sell-out crowd. The Osarian midfielder captained a selection of current and past greats in the 3-3 draw, before netting the winning penalty. The match drew large crowds in part due to the presence of several prominent names in Osarian football over the years, but none could have foreseen the appearance of Benedict di Corradi in the 70th minute. The former Osarius manager had been named as the all-star team's coach, but stepped onto the field late in the game to pay tribute to the man widely regarded as his heir. Forming what many pundits would consider a dream partnership, Watson and di Corradi -- in surprisingly good shape -- combined brilliantly to equalise on eighty-four minutes, sending the game to penalties.

In the first half, Watson's own apparent heir in Firewood -- Enrico Martelli -- had easily been the standout performer for the King's League giants. After just seven minutes, he laid on the opening goal for Zarblese striker Adriana Idtaile with a perfectly placed cross from the right flank. This was followed up by a thunderous volley from Tad Hollister's deep cross from the left on the half hour mark. You'd be forgiven for questioning why Orlando Florian had agreed to take up goalkeeping duties on this evidence. While the former Osarian international is considered legendary, he no longer has the agility and reflexes of his younger self.

While the game was not being played entirely seriously -- as the rolling substitutions would seem to indicate -- and seemed a little bit like a friendly kickabout in the park -- albeit with far more talent on display -- it was thoroughly entertaining, as evidenced by Rio Fortunado's forty-fourth minute goal. The Tyrrinian midfielder gracefully jinked through the Firewood midfield before defly chipping the ball over a diving Gulati. It was almost as if he wanted to make a point regarding that old football trope regarding form and class.

The second half saw a large number of substitutions from the all-star team, and a more competitive edge. Benedict di Corradi called in Jermain Lewis, and Robert Watson to the midfield, creating perhaps the most intimidating central midfield ever seen on an Osarian pitch, and replaced a struggling Florian with Watson's little known schoolmate Amas Nwokedi. The impact was immediate, as Lewis benefited from the elder Watson's tenacity in midfield, before feeding him a great chance at the edge of the box. The former Kart Hago captain made no mistakes rifling it past Gulati. Meanwhile, Nwokedi pulled off two stunning saves from each of the di Corradi kids to keep scores level, palming Alessandro's long drive over the bar, and turning Maria's curler around the post. After the match, di Corradi remarked on Nwokedi's ability, and questioned how he had managed to go unnoticed at professional level, for Nwokedi to reveal he never even played semi-professionally.

Firewood would soon regain the lead, though, when Reiss Ryerson rose highest to nod home from Ifill's corner in the sixty-eighth minute. They would hold this lead, under fire from the likes of Sean Dore and both Atkinson brothers -- through liberal use of the rolling substitutions rule -- until the late moment of magic between di Corradi and Watson.

Trofeo del Príncipe Third Edition

First Edition: Jan Mayen Islanders (Polar Islandstates)
Second Edition: Carter FC (Jasĭyun)

Following the end of the VI Super Cup and the UICA cycle, it's time for another edition of the Torneo del Príncipe. This one (the third edition) didn't bring many new things, except for the début of a new association: Mytannion, who will send a team to this friendly competition for the first time, in addition to that, we will have the return to the competition of the Erathi Football Association, who replaced the Virabi FA after days and days of search for an appropriate replacement. Aside from that, the other 6 associations (Valladares, Whirl Islands, Cotdelapoms, Polar Islandstates, Astograth and Civil Citizenry) competed in the last edition, with the Valladar, Whirl-Islander, Cotdelapomais, Polarian and Astrogothic Astrograthian FAs having competed in all previous editions.

Invitees, Format and Draw

Eight teams from eight nations were invited to take part in this Trofeo del Príncipe edition, and were split into two groups of four teams each, with two of them as "seeded teams", and the rest as "unseeded teams", making four "seeded" teams and four "unseeded" teams.

SEEDED TEAMS

Edmonton United (VLD) · Host and Valladar Super League sixth-placed team
Eastburg United (WRL) · Whirl Islands Premier League sixth-placed team and host invitee
Olympic Thessia (MYT) · Mytanar Takillega sixth-placed team
Juvillian Martinax (ERA) · Erathi Seria-A fifth-placed team

UNSEEDED TEAMS

Scapa Bay Rovers (PIS) · FPIFA Federation League sixth-placed team
Astograth University (ASG) · Astograthian League First Division sixth-placed team
Celtic (CLP) · Cotdelapomais Série A fifth-placed team
Briarmore FC (CVC) · Citiz King's League fifth-placed team

With two groups of four, the VFA once again made sure the Valladar and Whirl-Islander representatives, as hosts and special invitees, respectively, were drawn in different groups, leaving Olympic Thessia and Juvillian Martinax as the only seeded teams to be drawn during the group draw. VFA officers also noted that the Mytanar and Cotdelapomais representatives were also drawn into the same group, however, the organizing committee members want to clarify that was not done with intention.

GROUP A: Edmonton United, Olympic Thessia, Scapa Bay Rovers, Celtic
GROUP B: Eastburg United, Juvillian Martinax, Astograth University, Briarmore FC

Venues

Seven venues were selected by the VFA for the competition. By order of the organizing committee, Edmonton United played all their group stage games at their home stadium, Albert Field, in Edmonton. The other venue for Group A games was Westlands Stadium, in Hoxford.

Group B games were played at two stadia: Dragon Stadium, in Canalave and Alain Tramontin Stadium, in Eterna City.

The semifinals were played at Olympic Stadium, in Carloburgo and Estadio de la Riviera, in Slateport, while the Third Place Play-Off match and the Final were both played at the Alexander I National Stadium in Metropolis.

Group Stage

The group standings were determined by: points, goal difference, head-to-head result, goals scored and a coin toss, in order. The winner and runner-up of each group advanced to the semifinals, while the other two teams in each group were eliminated from the competition.

GROUP A:

Olympic Thessia were the first Mytanar team to be invited to the competition, and they also were the first team to qualify to the semifinals of the tournament after defeating lesser opposition from the Polar Islandstates and Cotdelapoms. Olympic's single loss in this tournament only helped to give the hosts the second berth to the semifinals. Edmonton kept showing traces of the irregularity which prevented them from competing in the UICA scene this time, but they managed to win the toughest match in their group and sneaked into the semifinals. On the other hand, Celtic were nothing but dull and the Polarians' apparent lack of international experience played against them in this tournament.

Edmonton United (VLD) 0-0 Celtic (CLP) @ Albert Field
Olympic Thessia (MYT) 3-1 Scapa Bay Rovers (PIS) @ Westlands Stadium
Edmonton United (VLD) 2-2 Scapa Bay Rovers (PIS) @ Albert Field
Olympic Thessia (MYT) 3-1 Celtic (CLP) @ Westlands Stadium
Edmonton United (VLD) 2-0 Olympic Thessia (MYT) @ Albert Field
Scapa Bay Rovers (PIS) 0-1 Celtic (CLP) @ Westlands Stadium

  Group A P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Olympic Thessia (MYT) 3 2 0 1 6 4 +2 6
2 Edmonton United (VLD) 3 1 2 0 4 2 +2 5

3 Celtic (CLP) 3 1 1 1 2 3 -1 4
4 Scapa Bay Rovers (PIS) 3 0 1 2 3 6 -3 1

GROUP B:

Group B can be summarized in three words: Eastburg United domination. After missing UICA qualification at the hands of the unfashionable, Brantalentian outfit Portland Greencaps, the first Whirl-Islander champions seemed to unload all their pent-up frustration on this competition against their Rushmori neighbours, and advanced to the next round without problems. Their escort was Briarmore FC, who managed to change a bit the VFA's opinion about Citiz teams with their strong performance against Juvillian Martinax and their last group stage match, where they managed to kick the Astrogothic University out of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Astrograthis were unable to assure the presence of an Astograth team in the semifinals of the tournament for the first time, and the Erathis...a total shame. Not worth to waste words about them.

Eastburg United (WRL) 3-2 Briarmore FC (CVC)
Juvillian Martinax (ERA) 0-0 Astograth University (ASG)
Both matches played @ Dragon Stadium
Eastburg United (WRL) 3-1 Astograth University (ASG)
Juvillian Martinax (ERA) 0-1 Briarmore FC (CVC)
Both matches played @ Alain Tramontin Stadium
Eastburg United (WRL) 2-1 Juvillian Martinax (ERA) @ Dragon Stadium
Astograth University (ASG) 1-1 Briarmore FC (CVC) @ Alain Tramontin Stadium

  Group B P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Eastburg United (WRL) 3 3 0 0 8 4 +4 9
2 Briarmore FC (CVC) 3 1 1 1 4 4 +0 4

3 Astograth University (ASG) 3 0 2 1 2 4 -2 2
4 Juvillian Martinax (ERA) 3 0 1 2 1 3 -2 1

SEMI-FINALS:

This edition's semifinals had a team called Olympic travelling to a stadium called "Olympic", and two teams called "United" facing each other. In the first semifinal, played in Carloburgo between Mytanars and Citiz, Olympic Thessia and Briarmore FC were even during most of the match, although a goal on extra time propelled Atletik Thessia's siblings to the final and sent the Citiz team to fight for the last space on the podium.

In the other semifinal, Eastburg United and Edmonton United starred a more close match, and given the fact both teams were unable to separate themselves during 120 minutes, the match went to penalties, where luck was on the valladar side. Therefore, the Monties were allowed a rematch with Olympic Thessia in the final. The Whirl-Islander United, meanwhile, will face Briarmore for the bronze medal.

Olympic Thessia (MYT) 1-1 Briarmore FC (CVC) (2-1 AET) @ Olympic Stadium
Eastburg United (WRL) 1-1 Edmonton United (VLD) (1-1 AET, 1-2 PKs) @ Estadio de la Riviera

THIRD PLACE PLAY-OFF AND FINAL:

Third Place Play-Off:
Briarmore FC (CVC) 2-2 Eastburg United (WRL) (3-2 AET) @ Alexander I National Stadium

Ajacascadax Chenkorya F.C. started the season very well, with winning four of the five matches. Probably it's all just luck, but it can be the work of the Kiaser Colonies' 19 year old Conner Tobin. Tobin scored 3 of the 11 goals of Ajacascadax, in the matches against Sazapkhulo (which they lost in the end) and Weron. Tobin proved to be a dangerous midfielder, attacking but also useful in the defence. Tobin have been declared Man of the Match of Ajacascadax - Weron, which he totally deserved. But Tobin is not the only good player in the starting line up of this season; 21 year old Shyama de la Cruz was the maker of two goals in the matches against Weron and Speed Hero.

Just promoted F.C. Weron is disappointing. Everybody expected F.C. Weron to play better as ever (partly because of new trainer Ano di Guaha and new keeper Renaro, from Stuffed Taxidermists), but they don't seem to be able to make that true. Aging Renaro has allowed 17 goals, 6 of them made by Ajacascadax, while the attackers just made 4 goals. The best player is defenitely Chenkoryan Paulie Holub, who is probably too good for Weron, but can't shine without any help from other players.

Champions of previous year, FC Stephani, are placed fourth at the moment. Behind Ajacascadax, Kapital and Vliegende Beigners. Their just signed Mossulian player James Frogatt has scored a few goals, but he isn't really popular at the fanbase of Stephani. Frogatt said to the press "Well, when all those asses on the stands don't support me I'm not able to make a goal, eh?" Previous matchday, a FC Stephani fan tried to throw a burning toilet roll at Frogatt, but a security agent prevented that.

After 10 matchdays, Ajacascadax is still leading the board, closely followed by Vliegende Beigners. Their new purchase from the Golden Tamarind, 19 year old Rinaldo Irizarry Vasquez, has shown to be their most talented midfielder. In the match against Speed Hero he played his best match until now; making 3 goals. Irizarry Vasquez has told the press that he is very happy with his new home, and that he isn't planning to leave the Beigners soon. He and reserve midfielder Irridando Gonzalez seem to be good friends, they have been seen together in Beign some times.

Kapital F.C. was happy to be the leader for one matchday, but they couldn't keep the first spot for longer as one matchday. Actually Kapital F.C. is the ideal team, but it hasn't really got a shiner, like other teams. The goal keeper position is for Paz Langlais, the 25 year old keeper with long blonde hair. Langlais has proved that he's an allright keeper, with some good skills, but he hasn't shined as much as Ajacascadax' keeper Yrjö Arriola. He permitted 8 goals. The defence consits out of young Polarian Valentijn Leschova, Abimelech Steffen, Heliodoro D'Cruze and Brecht Napoliello. Leschova is the youngest player of the team, but definitely not the worst. He and D'Cruze complement each other perfectly, what makes them the best defenders actually, while Steffen and Napoliello aren't dream defenders at all. The midfield positions are filled by Jermaine Muhlfield, Aemilianus Hines and Patrick Amsel. Muhfield is the mental coach of the team, when they need a peptalk they got it from Jermaine. The attackers of Kapital F.C. are disappointing everybody. Captain Ristéard Särkózy , Rauf Magnusson and O'Hearn have made "too less" goals, says coach Marina. There's a big chance one of them has to leave this year, and will be replaced by a foreign attacker.

SC Avenion is currently at place 5, higher as expected. A weird and mysterious thing are the new defender and midfielder. It are the Seunemi brothers Samder and Tumblers. They both appeared out of nothing (well yeah, out of Seunem, but where?), probably only SC Avenion knows. The thing that really matters is that they are a nice addition to the team, and maybe the key to succes. Jerem and Lowis are despite their talent not really accepted by the other team mates - maybe there's a reason for that.

Midseason Report

Well, this season certainly has turned out to be quite the interesting one, and not for the fans of Bugny FC. The Bears have been perennial favorites for the past 5 years now, so seeing their team anywhere other than the top two spots is somewhat of a shock. With wunderkind Daiki Ryota not hitting his stride and keeper Mikelatz Elizalde struggling at times, manager Franco Delgado definitely needs some adjustments to get back on top. Speaking of, Longview is sitting on the top of the table for the first time in over five years. Being anchored by the awesome striking ability of Dietmar Öztürk, the Tornadoes have far exceeded their expectations of fighting off relegation, and set themselves up as the team to beat in the coming weeks. Other teams that need to start getting results soon are Ville-DuPont and Arçon: they have the talent on their side to stay up but many are claiming its the managers' faults that the teams are doing bad. Only time will tell if Shawn Sandler (VDP) and Andrew Hanson (ARN) will have jobs at the end of the season.

Goals Leaders:
1) Dietmar Öztürk (Longview) - 16
2) Vlad Kurtz (Arçon) - 11
3) Shane Stanford (Walldrew) - 11
4) Daiki Ryota (Bugny) - 9
5) Thomas Desrede (Riverside) - 8

Fourth Round

Bugny FC 7-1 Bota Guerre (7-1 agg)
Riverside 2-2 Greenwater (3-2 AET, 3-2 agg)

Final Round preview
Bugny FC vs. Riverside played at Stade de Montagne

The two time SFA Cup winners Bugny FC are back in the finals once again, trying to make this very average league season into something more. Having blown out National League leaders Bota Guerre in the semis, thanks in part to 4 goals from Daiki Ryota, the Bears now set their sights on fellow League 1 competitors Riverside. The Dolphins have battled mediocrity for the past few seasons, only to have a surprising turn of events happen this season. They actually reached top of the table for a week, before settling down in second. This final should prove to be one of the more memorable matches as both teams like to score a lot of goal, so expect this to be a high scoring affair.

KPFA League First Division 5251 Season Preview

Tertius Shajarhayam – It's that time of year again. Dust off your scarves, wash off your novelty tupperware, and cover your children in paint; the First Division is set to begin. This time it's edition number eleven, and after a break filled with lots of interesting transfers, such as the purchase of Sonia Fuentes, the return of Aquillius Razava, and the departures of Mohammed Sharif, Iacomusam Gašughumi, and Oleg Rostov, many clubs will have a "new car smell," as the kids call it nowadays.

Article of business number one: Zhevassi are the frontrunners. They always are. Nemešiabhi Ja, the manager of the Galacticos, is truly a living legend, and it's a damn shame he's not interested in taking the Kagdazka and Pazhujebu job. His awareness of the age of his squad is unbelievable, and is surely the reason that the blue and orange are a perennial juggernaut. Just look back a few seasons if you don't believe me. You'll see a different list of players, but the same pedigree.

Their semifinal run in the Globe Cup is perhaps the most prominent manifestation of Ja's brilliance. Shocking Fušia Oujadda's Ranca Toco in the second/away leg of the round of 16, and recovering from a two nil aggregate deficit to dump out Mytanar powerhouse Atletik Thessia in the quarterfinals, Zhevassi looked in a class of their own for most of the tournament. Very few will find it a surprise that the club no longer covets domestic silverware; nay, Zhevassi's goal is to win a UICA crown.

And with the squad they've got, it's within reach; Gran Sultano is the goalkeeper, Naum Udachin, Arkhip Tikhomirov, Pete Walker, and Assu Danquah form the four-man defense, Odšahe Yakoko is the defensive midfielder, Claudio Albornos and Caligularana Harishandra will set up as attacking playmakers, with Tom Hovi and Anastasia Khorkuleva ahead of them on the wings and Igor Omelchenko the number nine up top.

Meanwhile, if anybody is going to stop the train that is delivering the First Division trophy to the misty, jungle-covered hills of the Zahuj Peninsula, it will have to be Sacha Chrétien and his new-look FKM side. Many supporters are talking about the Cotdelapomais boss' Orange Revolution, both as a sincere reference to their weird socialist chain-link fence motif and as a sarcastic reference to the club's new tactical setup.

Oh yeah. Have you heard that Olec Dasra is back home in Swartaz on loan for the time being? And that Oleg Rostov is gone permanently to Miron Stefanyshyn's Worcester Hearts? That leaves a lone striker, Jackson Diawara, and that's precisely what Chrétien wants, with the 4-5-1 having been his favorite formation for some time now. But fans of the People's Club have a stick up their butts over it; they want to see slick, attacking, pass-and-move possession football, and if they don't see it they'll wave nasty banners in FKM Arena telling Chrétien to go home.

As cranky as the supporters are, however, FKM look like a very good team indeed. They can wax poetic about their young goalkeeper René Wright-Efans, trust their reliable back four in Natasha Klossovskaya, André Blanc-Sénac, Aleksandr Onopko, and Joan Maklein, hope for industry and productivity from their flat bank of five midfielders (Eduard Winogradsky, Eualdo Nkong, Itzeder Unzueta, Agoztar Gorstiaga, and Egoitz Malgor), and expect continued good form from the aforementioned Diawara.

So basically what we're telling you is that the league title is a two-horse race. As much as it would be great to see the holders Gimnasia retain the trophy, it's not likely to happen. The departures of Lukas Reynard and Camran Linchuk look to debilitate the once-great Gypsies defense, and the best replacement Zivan Zagorinski's side could muster was the Astograthian red card specialist Itziar Amiso.

And besides, once you accept Gimnasia as a contender, you have to admit a legion of other candidates as well. Hey, what about Šudhan Chahachim's new Vulkan outfit? Inguma Sapano should do very well there. And hey, what about Magnus Dufresne's plucky Yastrabi team? They may have bombed out of the UICA competitions in spectacular style, but they can still score goals at will. Don't forget about way-too-old-but-you-never-know-because-of-who-they-are Juvapanam, either. You know what? Even Therakham might have a go. Razava returns to his hometown club amidst an outpouring of forgiveness for his departing the Terrors several years ago (see "Fortrangate"), and Ouamchi Pudibhišu comes in with a lot to prove after spending several years being overlooked on the FKM substitutes' bench.

So... now the only thing left to talk about is the promoted and relegated teams! We can wave bye-bye to Xenon, Šah, and Nekromanti (none of whom actually did that badly last season, but were still the bottom three in the table). Meanwhile, up come Iguani, Pkethat Hevnaje, and Pu. The first is a small little team from the Kagdaz southeast with fans who in the majority are super-liberal tree-hugger types, the second is a somewhat-popular-and-somewhat-good club from a very large Pazhujebi metropolis, and the third is a team that always gets made fun of for wearing greenish-brown shirts and being named... uh... well...

Anyway, let's all be mature about it, shall we? Read on to find a treasure trove of exceptionally well-documented but spectacularly irrelevant data.

Team-by-Team Breakdown

ANGELS
Nickname(s): The Kuratmad Kids, The Red and Blue
Colors: Red and sky blue
City, Country: Dyurtyuli, Kagdazka and Mahathu, Pazhujebu
Stadium(s): The Ice Cube (81,000 seats) and Praça de Prata (66,000 seats)
Manager: Ugo Stowell (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
Notable Players: Abouto, Durai, Jujazhedhi, Linchuk, Ottbourne, Srivastava, Torbinskiy, Zezima, Zhu
Player to Watch: Players are always given the chance to redeem themselves at Ugo Stowell's Angels, for better or worse. Enter Umashankar Srivastava, who enjoyed a bright start to his career at Angels as a youth player, but was bought at age sixteen by Zhevassi. There, he began to look out of his depth, and the Galacticos loaned him out to Xenon for a couple of seasons. He did reasonably well there, enough that FKM, recognizing that he still had potential, purchased him and made him a starter last year. But the campaign was painful to watch; like at Zhevassi, the young defender seemed to always be a step to late and a few red cards deemed him surplus to requirement at the People's Club. Now he has been given one last chance at his boyhood club by the esteemed Ugo Stowell. This will be a crucial year for the boy, if he can establish his place in the Kuratmad Kids' starting eleven, his career can perhaps succeed and he may eventually work his way into the Kagdazka and Pazhujebu national team, but if he struggles again, he may be forced into a very early retirement.

FKM
Nickname(s): The Orange and Silver, The People's Club
Colors: Orange and silver
City, Country: CMZ Metropolitan Area, Kagdazka
Stadium: FKM Arena (69,000 seats)
Manager: Sacha Chrétien (Cotdelapoms)
Notable Players: Blanc-Senac, Diawara, Duval, Gorstiaga, Klossovskaya, Maklein, Malgor, Nkong, Onopko, Unzueta, Winogradsky, Wright-Efans
Player to Watch: Down two strikers, FKM's attack will have a very different look to it this season. Chrétien's beloved 4-5-1 is a tool for counterattacking, not match control, so dynamic players with killer instincts are critical. Subsequently, Egoitz Malgor is likely to be an eminently important facet of the Orange and Silver's attack. Once a member of the Astograth national team and a key player for Royal Rumiatzi (where he occupied the wing opposite Slava Semënov), Malgor is known in his home nation of Astograth for his industry and sharp off-the-ball runs. Having fallen out of favor at Rumiatzi, Malgor was invited to join the FKM project when the tourism tycoon Ordol Urkiza bought the club. Last season, Malgor simply served as a distributor to the strikers ahead of him, a role that did not quite suit him; this season, he and Itzeder Unzueta will have the lion's share of responsibility for making the diagonal runs that will fuel counterattacks for the People's Club. If FKM win the title, Malgor will be hopeful that Gartzen Treko will give him another shot with the Olibondeka.

GIMNASIA
Nickname(s): The Antiques, The Gypsies
Colors: Turquoise and wisteria
City, Country: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Stadium: Gelendzhik Stadion (35,000 seats)
Manager: Zivan Zagorinski (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Amiso, Beenum, Filipov, Ju’Rizii, Levantis, Zimyatov, Ztnkk
Player to Watch: Let's just put this in perspective. Last season, during which Gimnasia won the First Division title, Kkrhumoq Ztnkk obtained just eight appearances (all of which came from off the reserves' bench); the sixteen-year-old was considered to be simply too young. Granted, he demonstrated promise in those showings, but nobody could have predicted what happened next. Out of nowhere, Brutušam Erassi had installed the Zozsjegzkkt midfielder in a starting role for the Kagdazka and Pazhujebu national team. Since, we've seen him deftly spraying passes all around in midfield for the Urchins with his tall and spindly frame, dark reddish-brown skin, thin brown eyes, and shoulder-length, fleecy, bleach-blonde hair. He's been a sensation for country. But can he do it for club? Gimnasia will sure hope so, as their title defense will be a tough ask this year. Ztnkk's responsibilities will be extensive: clean-up work in defensive midfield, distribution to Beenum on the wing for width, and threading through balls in to Filipov and Ju'Rizii.

IGUANI

City, Country: Yayal, Kagdazka
Stadium: Terpimost Stadion (13,000 seats)
Manager: Cjkbavkc Qd (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Ki'Seru
Player to Watch: Yayal is a tiny town in the mild pine forest of southeastern Kagdazka. Aside from the natural beauty of the area (which is impressive), the only thing it is known for is its small but resourceful and well-liked football club, Iguani. Though the eggplant-and-silver-green-clad team have achieved promotion to the First Division twice within the last decade, they have a history of attacking ineptitude and shameless negativity. Appropriately enough, they've obtained the services of goalkeeper Omigaeyun Ki'Seru from Vulkan. In truth, they ought to consider themselves very lucky to have done so; Ki'Seru is an excellent young goalkeeper from Andossa Se Mitrin Vega who is tall, graceful, and trusts his instincts. In fact, the only reason they have pulled it off is that Vulkan supporters (probably unfairly) blamed the club's 10th-place 5250 finish on the Vegan keeper, and the Vulkan board was happy to shift the blame to distract from its own failures. Iguani's manager Cjkbavkc Qd put his tiny little side at the front of the pack to hire Ki'Seru on loan and are hoping to park the bus just enough times to stay up.

JUVAPANAM
Nickname(s): The Sky and Silver, The Invincibles
Colors: Sky blue and silver
City, Country: Juvapanam, Pazhujebu

Manager: Paul Clayton (Krytenia)
Notable Players: Dhivadha, Fuentes, Ghur, Iamaxiro, Khan, Lomi, Narimanov, Qaavigaaq, Ragnarsson, Sartelli, Tnetennba
Player to Watch: Juvapanam are nowhere near the club they once were. Performing tenaciously, winning titles, lifting the nation... all those days are over now, their fifth-place finish of last year notwithstanding. Critics all around the Federation are all too keen to point out that the side is much too old; that the real standout players are severely lacking pace and slumping in form. Kimeileandro Iamaxiro is one of only a couple exceptions. A true poacher, Iamaxiro has used clutch goals, superb instincts, and terrific vision to make himself the savior of the medium-sized city situated across the mouth of Rahish Bay from the influential metropolis of Urajbina. The nightmare of any defense-minded coach trying to implement an offside trap, Iamaxiro is a striker from Zarbli who will be depended upon to provide precision in the final third, with "Grandpa" Šušan'ikara Ghur growing very, very old behind him. But as long as Arnold Tnetennba continues to function well as the engine of Juvapanam's six-man midfield, Iamaxiro will get his chances. If he takes them well, Juvapanam will always have a shot.

KREVETKA
Nickname(s): The Shrimp, The Wisteria and White
Colors: Wisteria and white
City, Country: Oktyabrsk, Kagdazka

Manager: Alain Letetre (Cotdelapoms)
Notable Players: Andrea, Astapkovich, Ghedafghupa, Ilych, Luzhkov, Obukhov, Petrachkov, Trubachev
Player to Watch: One of Erathore's most prolific goalscorers, Lucifer Andrea is a critical player for Krevetka; possibly the most critical player. With Demyan Ilych waning into the twilight years of his career, responsibility must fall to someone else to put points on the board for the Shrimp, and if it isn't going to be Andrea, who is it going to be? A well-rounded football player who does all things well, he left his Eratherian club Vincanto three years ago and has been a crucial element in Alain Letetre's positive tactics thus far at Krevetka. This season could be a breakout one for Andrea: with the promising 17-year-old dynamic wing threat Sergei Astapkovich having pushed his way into the first team so as to provide a distraction to opposing defenses, and with the technically superb left midfielder Anjuthušizhu Ghedafghupa providing service, he ought to be in the running for the Golden Boot award. And yet Krevetka are highly unlikely to be seen anywhere near the top half of the table? Why? Their defense is absolutely atrocious, that's why. Fans of the Wisteria and White should brace themselves, their club will ship goals like nobody's business in 5251.

PKETHAT HEVNAJE
Nickname(s): The Red and White
Colors: Red, white, and black
City, Country: Pkethat Hevnaje, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Mhudhema Adizha Stidiyama (47,000 seats)
Manager: Sergei Qaralashvili (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: -
Player to Watch: You know, Pkethat Hevnaje is the fourth-largest city in Kagdazka and Pazhujebu. Really. It's strange to think about, but it's true. So why don't they have a strong First Division football club? The better angels of our nature would tell us that the city ought to have one. There are plenty of lower-middle-class people there who would normally be the driving force behind a First Division club. Instead, Pkethat Hevnaje is stuck with K'arasi (a conservative club that some men are vaguely enthusiastic about) and a club named after its home city (traditionally liberal and half-heartedly if broadly supported by women), neither of whom are any good. It would be good for football in the city if Pkethat Hevnaje could find a way to stay up this year, but with nobody in the side being worth a second look, the odds are poor. In theory, the fact that Shadows are going to be so atrocious should provide an avenue for a promoted team to avoid relegation. But it's become clear to all that since the Relegation/Promotion Playoff was abolished a few years ago, the gulf in class between the First and Second Divisions has widened, not shrunk.

PU

City, Country: Urajbina, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Oberlander'ajat Stidiyama (41,000 seats)
Manager: Ouašemedhi Kha (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: -
Player to Watch: Urajbina's much-teased stadium mates have advanced themselves to the First Division for the first time in their history, but they are set to have a really tough time of it. With a squad of nobodies following Zhevassi's capture of Pu's one strong player (athletic attacking left wingback Assu Danquah), the side are at risk of receiving a few Herculean drubbings at the hands of the better clubs this season. But the fans, if not particularly numerous, will support their fecal-matter-colored side with entirely non-ironic enthusiasm every day, desperate to show the nation that Urajbina ZL are not the only side that plays at the Oberlander'ajat Stidiyama. Their dreams are small; they just want to earn a point in the Urajbina Derby. Really though, neutrals will merely pity them. I mean, can you imagine what opposition supporters try to throw at you when your club's name is "Pu?" Not coins, I'll tell you that.

RAKTAGHAV HATHI
Nickname(s): The Red Elephants
Colors: Red and White
City, Country: Emuzhezh, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Emuzhezh Stidiyama (36,000 seats)
Manager: Taras Strogolev (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Sajid
Player to Watch: What in holy hell are two sides from Emuzhezh, a podunk town in eastern Pazhujebu, doing in the First Division? Two years in a row? Something's in the water, maybe. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right, as Taras Strogolev's Hathi actually obtained a mid-table finish last season and are hoping to do even better this year. The key is the diminutive but pacy young striker Chalia Sajid, the youngest captain in the First Division at 18 years old. Having come off of promising-if-naive performances for country at the Olympics and the Di Bradini Cup, the young lady has been dubbed "the next Fušia Oujadda," although, if we're being honest, her skill set is considerably more limited. Wickedly fast but usually way out of position, Sajid will tear apart sides in the bottom half of the table and tank miserably when facing more fleet-footed top-level center backs. But her potential is unlimited (remember, she's still a teenager), and if she stays fit she could drive Hathi into the upper half of the table, possibly even into the Globe Cup spots (you didn't hear that from us). In truth, the Red Elephants did very well to persuade her to decline the offers she received from Vulkan and Juvapanam in the close season.

SHADOWS

Stadium: Avazhughij Arena (47,000 seats)
Manager: Oghu’ghabuzheh Palšikar (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Elminster, Ignatyev, Zha
Player to Watch: Man, this is depressing. A once formidable side, formerly renowned for their impenetrable back four and their tireless, workmanlike midfield, Shadows now look a safe bet to finish in the relegation spots. With both Iguani and Pkethat Hevnaje looking more skillful, Oghu’ghabuzheh Palšikar's assignment is simpler than it ever has been: don't wind up in the Second Division next year. With the desperation of a cruise ship captain lost at sea, he's signed whatever player he can from other, equally depressing sides. The best he could do was a loan deal for Enavada Zha, pariah at his hometown club of Urajbina for his miserably poor showings alongside Rudinei and Vuhumkara last year. Zha's work rate is good, and his technical skills are acceptable, but the lad is far to often described as "uncoachable" by sources close to teams he plays for. Frustratingly individualistic at best, simply stupid at worst, Zha must pull it together or his punishment is likely to be a permanent move to Shadows as the club sinks into oblivion.

Stadium: Therakham Velodrama (52,000 seats)
Manager: Yegor Gaznayev (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Pudibhišu, Razava
Player to Watch: In a tearful press conference just days ago, Aquillius Razava addressed the issues that have haunted fans of Mahathu's black-and-blue-clad club for a few years now, and as stupid and sappy as the whole thing was, even neutrals felt that somehow the wounds had been healed. Now, everyone remembers what happened when Corazo Fortran managed Therakham for two years, right? How when he took over, the club seemed on the verge of a title push, and how when he left, he had divided the dressing room as the players stabbed each other in the back in the media? Boris Timriz and Da Costa left in a huff for Urnabhi, Ana Khorkuleva found a job with behemoth club Zhevassi, and Fortran was eventually sacked (at which point he took charge of Begemoti and promptly got the Kagdaz minnows relegated). Razava left the country entirely, obtaining a lucrative deal with Tout-Puissant Outremont in Cotdelapoms, where he lifted the Potazzi Série A league trophy. After years of unwillingness to even speak about what happened, Razava has made peace with his hometown club and accepted a big-money move back home. URAJBINA
Nickname(s): The Yellow, Red, and Blue
Colors: Yellow, blue, and red

Manager: Ignacio Vélez (Candelaria And Marquez)
Notable Players: Bhara, Govou, Hallvarðsdóttir, Júrangil, Kabir, Marcos Toledo, Marinho, Pekarik, Rudinei, Shelton, Vilmar
Player to Watch: The AUGECC buyout of Urajbina ZL's shares has proven to be massively lucrative, as the club's widespread popularity and ability to sell shirts has expanded as the Yellow, Red, and Blue become a global brand. But on the pitch, Urajbina have been a catastrophe. Three consecutive years finishing in mid-table, far short of the UICA places, have made fans bitter, sarcastic, and cynical. It is their feeling that Ignacio Vélez should have been sacked long ago, but his tenure has been extended time and time again by a board reluctant to be seen has having made the wrong choice. This year is probably where the line gets drawn, though. With other mid-table clubs like Angels, Raktaghav Hathi, and Therakham gearing up to push northward, Urajbina must take care to not end up anywhere near the relegation zone. Such a finish would surely send Vélez packing at last. Rudinei must pick up his game, in the eyes of our staff here at the Herald. The Yellow, Red, and Blue have two strong wingers in Hallvarðsdóttir and Júrangil who can provide service, so it is down to the towering Cafundelense target man to get his head on a few crosses.

Manager: Dan Medworth (Kytler Peninsulae)
Notable Players: Jeppeson, Vaskaryev
Player to Watch: Yet another year in the First Division for the microscopic outfit known as Urnabhi. Since being promoted in 5242, the club have enjoyed an unbroken stay despite always being mostly terrible. However, this season the big story is not the usual "HOLY CRAP URNABHI STAYED UP AGAIN," it's that Urnabhi's bitter rival Raktaghav Hathi managed to do so as well, finishing higher in the table, in fact. This indignity led the Spiders ownership group to give Cheslav Isyanov the boot, and for the first time in the club's history, a foreign manager has been hired. Kytlerian Dan Medworth is the man who got the job, and he's pledged to imbue the side with a more practical "just get a point" approach that will see Urnabhi grow into a more defensive and counterattacking side. With Medworth comes Morten Jeppeson (also of the Kytler Peninsulae), a right back with center back abilities who ought to provide enough of a presence to distract opposing teams from the Pink and Orange's only real attacking threat, left wingback Vaskaryev.

VULKAN

Notable Players: Andropov, Bawuah, Hu, Makureru, Obolensky, Sapano, Saunders, Shcherbina, Thašighi, Vengerov, Yuill
Player to Watch: Tenth?! What the hell just happened?! With all the class that the Volcano possesses, why on earth did they find themselves meandering down into the bottom half of the table last year? Maybe we'll never know, since Šudhan Chahachim has acted fast and totally reworked the squad. Bang. New goalkeeper. Bang. Get rid of the three man defense, add a strong young left back. Bang. Sapano. Most people think Chahachim's worked it all out, and that Vulkan will be right back in the top three. But look closely. Yes, the club's defense was ludicrously bad last season, and no, Ki'Seru wasn't fantastic. But amongst all of the "blame that Vegan goalkeeper" histrionics, this simple statistic remains hidden: Ki'Seru faced far more shots than any other goalkeeper in the First Division last season. Maybe the center back playing in front of him had a bad year? Pirdassia Bawuah, step forward, please. The former Juvapanam star has indeed not made the most of her lucrative contract with the Burgundy. In fact, she's been so poor that she's lost her place in the Federation national team. The lass has amazing skill and physical presence. But her Achilles heel is her own head, as she is often prone to bouts of depression and low self-esteem, two things that recently have done a number on her confidence level.

Notable Players: Abston, Christ, Instinsky, Oistrakh, Orbizo, Proulx, Spyopolous, Yir, Zanga
Player to Watch: No Bashirskaya? No problem. Yastrabi's owners either look like geniuses for having sacked the popular Bashirskaya in favor of the swashbuckling, wheeling-and-dealing Dufresne, or they look like morons for having waited so long to do so. But whatever. That's all water under the bridge, now. Yastrabi were marvelous last year, and went blow to blow with Gimnasia in the title race over the last few weeks of the season. During the close season they've looked to simply hold on to what they have as transfer market cannonballs have whizzed overhead. In the end, they've emerged with their squad completely intact, Dufresne having persuaded everyone to stay put with promises of cash and more success. In the end Dufresne's greatest masterpiece was hanging onto Yevgeniy Oistrakh, a former Vulkan youth team goalkeeper who ultimately declined a very big offer from his former club (they wanted him back really badly). Best of luck to the lad as he continues his career at an excellent club. Someday soon he'll be capped for the Urchins.

Notable Players: Albornos, Danquah, Harishandra, Hovi, Khorkuleva, Omelchenko, Sultano, Tikhomirov, Udachin, Walker, Yakoko
Player to Watch: The Blue and Orange are stellar, and though they slipped down to fourth last year thanks to some injury trouble, they qualified for the Globe Cup and sped all the way to the semifinals. We don't have to tell you how good they are. They're the best club in Kagdazka and Pazhujebu by some distance. Correspondingly, trying to define a "Player to Watch" for Zhevassi is like trying to find a slutty girl in Jeruselem; the options are much too extensive. But since he always seems to be forgotten in the background behind the club's barrage of attacking talent, we'll go with goalkeeper Gran Sultano. Bought affordably years ago (through the outstanding genius of Nemešiabhi Ja) from Pyramid AC of Zarbli, Sultano has forged a career as a marvelously fit athlete, quick-witted decision-maker, and unflappable defensive leader with the Zhevassi juggernaut. He donned the captain's armband intermittently throughout last year as Claudio Albornos battled a slew of injuries, did the best he could to keep Zhevassi alive in the Globe Cup semifinal penalty shootout versus Mountbatten Junction by making two fantastic saves, and in the end won his third "Goalkeeper of the Year" award.
