World Lacrosse Championships XIII Sign Ups

Postby Sarzonia » Wed Sep 28, 2011 2:08 pm

It's high time to get another edition of the World Lacrosse Championships started again!

After 12 editions, the sport of lacrosse has seen gradual growth from a fairly small niche tournament to a tournament that is on the cusp of becoming another important piece of the NS Sports puzzle. Will the 13th edition help spur further growth?

Please post sign ups and host bids here!

Please note: Due to Sarzonia being named a co-host of World Cup LVII, Sarzonia will NOT bid to host the World Lacrosse Championships.

World Lacrosse Championship 13 hosting bid by The Kytler Peninsulae

OOC elements

Nation history: The Kytler Peninsulae is a new nation, but run by an old user, whose former nations Kaze Progressa and Kura-Pelland hosted six World Cups between them (12, 17, 25, 38, 44, and 47), as well as other smaller competitions - including the first World Lacrosse Championship. As Kaze Progressa, the user was the lead devisor of the KPB ranking system, created the Baptism of Fire competition, and was the first to introduce style modifiers to the World Cup (in WC25). This tradition of innovation in technical elements of NS Sports has been retained with the new nation, with proposals already made for a new lacrosse scorinator, and the first ever lacrosse ranking system.

Scorination: In light of discussions over the lacrosse module in xkoranate and the unusual results produced in WLC12 (with some very high and low scores at various points), The Kytler Peninsulae devised a new lacrosse-specific Excel scorinator, "MyLAX", designed from the ground up to produce realistic scores, and to incorporate a modest ranking effect.

The workings of MyLAX are simple: each team has an "expected goal total", which is the sum of a style modifier, RP-adjusted rank differential, and a constant (10.93 for home teams, 9.84 for away teams or both teams on neutral territory). The actual number of goals scored is the expected goal total, plus a random number between -4 and 4, rounded to the nearest integer. If overtime is required, the number of goals in OT is a random integer of up to approximately half the expected goal total. (Where this does not break the tie, a resim would take place, for simplicity.)

The AWR ranking system and MyLAX have been specifically designed to be compatible with each other, in particular to ensure that ranking remains secondary to RP bonus at the WLC. A newbie with a perfect RP bonus are favoured more than 2-to-1 to defeat a team with a perfect 1.000 AWR but no RP bonus on neutral territory, and would be slightly favoured even playing away - and in practice, the top two teams have AWR rankings of .760 and .525, so the impact of rank is even smaller than that.

Because the expected goal total is increased or decreased by the difference in (RP-adjusted) ranking scores, a team with a .500 AWR has a one-goal advantage over a newbie (their expected goal total is increased by 0.5, and that of their opponents is reduced by 0.5).

Style modifiers are simple to understand in this scorinator: each point of modifier has a one-goal impact on the expected goal total of both teams, so positive modifiers denote more attacking teams, and negative modifiers denote more defensive teams. The proposed style modifier range is +/- 2.

RP bonus: As hinted, the RP bonus effect is stronger than the ranking effect. RPs will be rated on a 0-1 scale, based primarily on quality and creativity, and the last three matchdays will be accounted for in the overall RP bonus, with the bonus halving each matchday. Hence a perfect bonus comes from three top-quality RPs on consecutive matchdays, and is 1.75 points (1 + 0.5 + 0.25). Note that these are weighted identically to AWR points. The degrading bonus rewards regular RPing right from the off; after only two matchdays, over 85% of the bonus is in effect, compared to less than 20% after two matchdays of a 13-matchday tournament with non-degrading bonus. That, in turn, provides an immediate incentive to debutants, especially as the RP advantage dwarves their ranking disadvantage.

Format: This will depend upon signup numbers. If the number of teams suits four-team groups, they will be played as triple round-robin groups, as per WLC12, with the difference being that the fixtures in The Kytler Peninsulae will be played first, not last (to prevent teams travelling to the host nation when already eliminated). Triple round-robin is impractical with larger groups, so if the number of signups suits groups of five or six, double round robin will be used instead. Groups will consist of four, six, or (less preferably) five teams, depending on signup numbers. The preferred number of groups are eight, ten, and sixteen.

Puppeteering will be perfectly accepted if necessary as a means of ensuring a workable number of teams. Rounding up, not down, will always be used. For instance, if there were 43 signups, five more would be sought to produce a 48-team competition with eight six-team groups.

IC elements

Geography: The Kytler Peninsulae is a nation in Rushmore, on the western tip of the eastern continent bordering Albundania. If that makes sense. Anyway, it's got nine-point-mumble million people, and is as sports-crazy as you'd expect for Rushmore. Lacrosse is one of the leading summer sports along with baseball and cricket, and the newly-founded AWR Kytlerian Lacrosse League has drawn WLC-winning stars from Civil Citizenry and Mytannion to play in its inaugural season.

Stadia: Games will be played all over the country, in the ten stadia used in the aforementioned KLL. Groups will be based in up to three locations in relatively close proximity to each other; some venues will host double-headers, but all games in a group on the final matchday will be played in different locations so that they can be played simultaneously, preventing some teams gaining an advantage from earlier results. More details will be provided if the bid wins.

Lacrosse history: the Kytlerians debuted at WLC12, in what was the nation's first appearance in any international sporting event. After a 0-2 start, the team surged to an eight-game winning streak - the longest of any team in the competition - before falling to Camwood in the quarter-finals. They are ranked thirteenth on the presently-provisional AWR rankings.

Other sporting history: the Kytlerians are best remembered for their success at the Games of the VI Summer Olympiad in Lasft, where they picked up twenty-six medals, ten gold, to finish 13th in the medals table.

Fan travel: Zube International Airport is a modern, three-terminal complex that will be the main hub for fans travelling to the WLC, though smaller international airports in other cities will be ready for charter flights for teams drawn to play there. Investment is also underway to improve the country's railway network, ready for major events such as the WLC.

Hotels and guest houses are widely available, particularly in the country's many coastal resorts (some of which will host WLC fixtures), though there are relatively few luxury hotels.
