The Weegie Star
Season News

Controversial Team Link Begins To Pay Dividends

As the beginning of a new season in Weegie Football begins, let's look at the most interesting (and controversial) policy the WFA has instituted, the "team link", allowing a team to become a feeder side for a foreign side which has had many teams up in arms. The foreign side can send players on loan to the Weegie side, and can have "first option" on a Weegie player if he decides to leave a club, essentially a free player for the foreign side since The Weegies does not allow player transfer on a for-profit or monetary basis, and gives significant rights to players wishing to switch teams.

Teams which haven't found a team link are complaining that this gives the teams with team links an unfair advantage. Connor Fallstrom, Chairman of Aberbell Masons, claimed that "These teams are getting players we simply don't have access to because of CACE regulations on player transfer. This is a dangerous loophole which could severely undermine the competitiveness of our domestic game."

Some people are also worried about a potential drain of talent. Don McKie of the Weegie Youth Player's Association said "It may be that many excellent talent will go out of the Weegies and our domestic teams will suffer. Why should Weegies suffer from half-baked football whilst other nations enjoy the cream of what talent we have?"

WFA President Arthur McBride rubbished these claims, however. "We cannot imprison players on the Twelve Islands and expect our game to reach the levels of teams at the top level of world football. With these links we will develop talent that can play in the top divisions of the world, can continually challenge for international dominance, and is well-respected by the international footballing community. We cannot exile ourselves; we must show all the footballing nations of the world how Weegies play the game."

Teams linked:

Drumnavog Thistle (Weegie League, 2nd Division) link with Beningrad (Sorthern Northland)
Inbhir Mór (Weegie League, 3rd Division) link with Corcaigh (Sorthern Northland)
Duninverkirk Hibernians (Twelve Islands Championship, Combined Weegie Division) link with Fenian Sport Club (Sorthern Northland)
St. Andrew's (Weegie League, Second Division) link with St. Andrew's (West Zirconia)
Rossiemannock Rose (Weegie League, Second Division) link with Caires City (Candelaria And Marquez)
Sconfoot Rovers (Weegie League, 3rd Division) link with Caires City (Candelaria And Marquez)
Tyndwichamburnock FC (Weegie League, Second Division) link with KT Hotspur (Candelaria And Marquez)

Teams receiving foreign players;

FC Aberdunkirk: Adrie Hoogland, 22, striker, and Serge van Leeuwen, 27, right-winger (Nethertopian).
Sonskirk Tigers: Puc van Staatsel, 18, goalkeeper, and Jantje Reitbergen, 19, left-back (Nethertopian).

Weegie League System Finalised.

The WFA finalised the league system for this season, which took longer than expected, thus missing the deadline for international club competitions.

We don't have the space to go into detail about all the divisions, but as regards the top two divisions, in the Weegie Premier League, Mauchit Park F.C and Farlandh United will have a tough time staying in the Weegie Premiership, which has only seen a few new teams come through to become league stalwarts since its' inception, The Distillery being the most successful in that time. There's a bit of a talent gulf between the Weegie Premiership and the Weegie League, 1st Division, and it's shown up teams bigger than both of these newcomers. They might leapfrog perpetual bottom feeders Jamestoun City, though. Up top, as usual, it's going to be a fight between dominant team Mackintosh Thistle Celtic, and resurgent Buchanan L.F.C and Lylia Foresters sides to take the championship.

Teighan Fiealdains and Plarghlain were relegated from the Premiership last season, and both have suffered; Teighan lost their star striker Johnny Pollock, who decided to sign for Mauchit Park F.C. to keep himself in the Premiership, whilst Plarghlain have basically lost most of their defensive staff and half of their first-team midfield from last season, who've jumped ship to various sides in the 1st Division and the Premiership. Rumour has it that the abrasive style of manager Tommy Caulfield, as well as their relegation, led to this mass abandonment. Caulfield will have to make do with second-stringers and signings from lower leagues, and his team looks favourite to go down this season along with struggling Nortkirk. Promotion looks likely for the Longshoremen, who performed well last season and have strengthened their side with some of Plarghlain's ex-players, as well as Aigh nas Raidhraillinan, although former Weegie Premier Division sides Sauchiehall Rovers and Soothside City will challenge.

So, after the promotions and relegations, what does this season's Weegie league system look like?

O-LEAGUE SEASON THREE – REVIEW
A new sponsor, a new season, and new questions. Mercia or Ousevale? Someone else? What's with all the Frenchies? All this and more...

Matchdays 1-5
Emberton Reds are surprise leaders of the table after five games, but it's Mercia Bromham's eight-one demolition of Leston on Matchday Two which grabs the attention. Well, that's not true; it's the fact six of those were netted by Ian Betts that grabs all the attention. Ousevale Borough get in on the action, too, with a six-one drubbing of Caversham on Matchday Four. Ellisham and Aigburth start long hard seasons without a win in their first five.
TOP FIVE: Emberton Reds 11pts, Ousevale Borough 10, Dereapolis City 10, Stanton Town 9, Caversham 9

KFA Cup First Round
Aigburth Athletic's miserable start to the season continues as they lose 2-1 to O-League Four side Camberley Town. Caversham (Bradwell Saints), Leston (Notegia Rangers) and Club Francophone (Avidia City) at least have the decency to go out to reasonably good O-League Two sides. Spare a thought for Oustia; they had the audacity to score first against Ousevale Borough; the Tigers then proceeded to put nine past their opponents.

Matchdays 6-10
Emberton Reds remain unbeaten, and their fans dream of the possibility of silverware. Avidia United recover from a bad start to shift up to third, whilst Monthuez, without a win in nine, drop into the relegation zone on Matchday Ten.
TOP FIVE: Emberton Reds 24pts, Ousevale Borough 21, Avidia United 19, Casuals Osteria 19, Stanton Town 18

KFA Cup Second Round
Things pretty much went by the book in round two...with one or two exceptions. Camberley continued their cup run with a victory over NSE Kovenham of OL2, and Norton, relegated from the Premier last season, got their revenge against newly-promoted Stratford Rovers. Elsewhere, CF Avides impress with a five-one hammering of Faversham Town, two divisions below them.

Matchdays 11-15
Can anyone beat the Reds? They've gone half the season unbeaten, five points clear at the top...it all looks good from there. Not so for Monthuez, who stretch their winless run to fourteen, or for Ellisham, who finally won their first game of the season on Matchday Eleven.
TOP FIVE: Emberton Reds 35pts, Casuals Osteria 30, Ousevale Borough 28, Mercia Bromham 28, Stanton Town 25

KFA Cup Third Round
And now things get tasty. Krytenia Emberton knock out Stanton, Mercia Bromham finally beat the Reds, and Camberley Town win again, this time knocking out Hastings. Caledon Simpson, meanwhile, are embarrassed away at Hoxton.

Matchdays 16-20
Casuals Osteria finally beat the Reds on Matchday Seventeen...and send them on a three-game losing streak. In all the confusion, Mercia top the table and aim for the title...but the Casuals are behind only on goal difference. At the bottom, Monthuez still haven't won since Matchday One; they're eleven points from safety.
TOP FIVE: Mercia Bromham 40pts, Casuals Osteria 40, Ousevale Borough 38, Emberton Reds 37, Stanton Town 36

KFA Cup Quarter-Finals
Only five O-League Premier clubs got this far...and only one match involved two of them, Avidia United beating Krytenia Emberton two-nil. Elsewhere, Camberley's brave run was ended by the Tigers, Mercia beat Hoxton, and Norton are the only non-Premier club remaining after beating Ousevale Juniors.

Matchdays 21-25
Osteria roar to the top; Mercia chase, and Ousevale slip at the wrong time. It's all getting close at the top. At the bottom? CFF finally win their second of the season, but they're as good as down.
TOP FIVE: Casuals Osteria 51pts, Mercia Bromham 49, Emberton Reds 47, Ousevale Borough 46, Stanton Town 42

KFA Cup Semi-Finals
Ousevale squeak past Norton at Wanderers Park, whist Mercia look to make it a cup "three-peat"...and put three past Avidia United at the Draconium to set up an all-Nova Mercian final.

Matchdays 26-30
A draw with Stratford Rovers relegates Monthuez on Matchday 26, and Aigburth follow a week later after defeat to Osteria. Casuals clean up the title with two games in hand, and all that's left is for Leston to get themselves relegated on Matchday 29, and the season's as good as over.

Bradwell Saints return after two seasons away, and Avidia just miss out on a Premier spot. Noton United, Westleigh Rovers and Hoxton go the other way. Lower down, Loco go from Two to Four in successive seasons, Beckton do the same in the opposite direction, and Camberley's cup-run reward is promotion to Three.

Matchday Fifteen… Well that took long enough.

Nine weeks later, we finally have Green Island back where they belong, at the summit of Candelariasian football. An odiously simple demolition of Mayo Valley – hardly a stunner, given that the west Candelarians have won a single game since matchday two – was all it ultimately took, thanks to a pair of draws for the previous top two.

In Turkish’s case they deserved rather more, an Alexander free-kick equalised late in the first half with a John Potter penalty, but the second half was largely devoid of set pieces and the visitors strugglers to break through the unexpectedly packed defence of Gamboa. Castelão’s side lived on their nerves throughout however, with Danny Bakker highly unfortunate to be denied a spot kick of his own from a woeful Daniel Stride tackle – the first foot the young full-back has really put wrong since coming in for the injured Daniel Lacombe.

Besides the dropped points, Turkish would also see Bakker shown a second yellow late on, his suspension for next weekend set to coincide with an absence for Calabrese after his own worrying injury on international duty, though at least they have options to cover them. Bloody loads of ‘em, actually…

Port of Clotaire also suffered, with Ham Hyi-san limping off early, though in his case it doesn’t look quite as serious. His absence was enough to stop the Harpies adding more than one goal to their thus-far impressive tally, and the PoC were ultimately lucky to escape with a point at Barreto’s horribly inconsistent Marbles.

And talking of inconsistency: Albrecht FC, who get younger and more nymphish by the day. With Nakatsuru clearly carrying a knock and sub’d for Kouakou Kouamé early on, the Scorpions looked completely incapable of breaking down Caires Sports, who struck themselves half-way through the second half from – and this may surprise you – a counter-attack, Adirondu putting away the winner for one-nil. The Knights’ hopes of grabbing a TQCC spot from the Apertura still look grim, with MarquezOW six points ahead – and Caires City did their neighbours no favours in letting hold of a lead at home to the naranja to crumble to their sixth defeat of the season.

The boos rang out around the McNeil Bingo Arena, but it’s all for show – there’s no chance of them driving Dionísio out now, even if they’ve got almost no chance of even grabbing a Globe Cup place, in an outcome that’s really not going to help their international ranking (and isn’t great news for the CMSC’s flash coefficient as a whole)…

One man who is gone, however, is Da Silva at Catedral. A hapless three-nil defeat in Saurin provided his end, with a new man expecting in the dugout after the CMS Cup break. Quite what said individual can hope to achieve with a side with just six points to its name is unclear, but they still have the players for, let’s say, a fifteenth place finish. And if they don’t manage that, it could well be curtains for Cathedral City on a rather more permanent basis…

Albrecht FC 0-1 Caires Sports (Adirondu 71)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-2 Tenderville United (Macanás 44, Oughton 45+1; Night 48, Kuypers 90+2)
Caires City 1-2 Marquez-Onwere (Lewis 35; Smit 40, Sáez 83)
Candelaria-Allemali 0-0 AFC MN Smith

Gamboa FC 1-1 Albrecht Turkish (Potter 40; Alexander 18)
Green Island 4-0 Mayo Valley (Young 43, Aldren 45, Anwamanë 46, Paterson 57)

Okees, so running through it all nice and quickly… It’s an early tubby bye-bye for Tenderville, the reigning champions falling to defeat in the biggest upset by far of this round. With a second string side held by CMSC2 Albrecht Independent at the Home of the Dragon, the Nethertopians travelled to the Army Ground for the replay and were promptly turned over three-one – despite Drunn Deleks taking the lead after just seven minutes. T’was a very fine performance by the Indies, but rather served to sum up Tenderville’s slightly below-par season and the missed opportunity to become one of the barest handful of sides to retain the cup won’t go down especially well with the board, one would suspect. Unless, of course, it’s a signal of intent to the effect that, nine points behind Green Island in the league, Carson still sees the CMSC title as a genuine possibility, and the cup, therefore, as but a mere trinket. But probably not.

The defeated finalists from last term also went out, the Marbles unlucky to be drawn away at hatefully consistent cup side KT Hotspur, while all interest in the competition from the east of Rushmore was extinguished with Portuguese’s ousting of NAPPC. Elsewhere, the few valiant semi-pro sides left in the tournament were all ousted – though non-league Bettney SC, having excelled themselves merely to get this far in knocking out both Chapon clubs as well as Turkish’s feeder/reserve/B/youth team Magnus United in previous rounds, almost took Cathedral City to a replay before Nathan Paganel silenced the north-east Candelarian seaside town a minute from time.

Alvery Blades managed an upset, of sorts, with MN Smith going down to a single own goal, and will be joined by fellow CMSC2 side Brayton Town in the next round, while Arrigo C.d.F. are the last club drawn from the regional divisions to squeak into the last sixteen.

Matchday Sixteen… So, as the final push for TQCC places until the next final push for TQCC is almost upon us, the biggest game of the weekend took place in the north-east of Candelaria.

Except that, to put it another way, it didn’t.

In another universe, Port of Clotaire versus KT Hotspur might well have been really and truly worth watching – a supreme test of attack versus defence, with a place in the Champions’ Cup at stake. Instead, the wicked fingers of goal difference spoiled our fun for, even if the Spur had closed the gap on the Harpies to just three points, the double-figures GD would still have been impossible to make up. It feels wrong, frankly. Football’s about winning, not scoring goals. ‘Goals For’ is surely an even bigger evil, but what right have the CMSC to legislate in any way against one preferred style or play or another? They could just as easily reward tight defences at times like these. It’s discriminatory. Something must be done.

That little rant from up Rosasharn way, echoed by Revault and a number of his squad following the final whistle in Clotaire, took quite some time to die; an impotent symbol of frustration that the club won’t be receiving any reward more significant than a Globe Cup spot for their toils this term, and denying us all a remotely entertaining Super 17 weekend. Phooey.

As it is, Ras Rataran’s curling free-kick two minutes into stoppage time pretty much goes to waste, at least in the short term, and leaves Port of Clotaire struggling for automatic TQCC qualification but otherwise comfortably cushioned inside the top four. Turkish’s defeat in Arrigo sees them lose even further ground on Green Island, and goal difference (boo, hiss) ensures that the Apertura title is the GIZ’s again short of a huge defeat against City and massive victory for Mannasuch’s side over Tenderville next time out. Turkish, MarquezOW and the PoC will battle it out for second to fourth.

Matchday Seventeen… Well, thank heavens we didn’t have anything very much left to play for, eh, at least as far as mid-season qualification was concerned. So in lieu of some dribbling preamble, let’s just cut to the bloody chase, shall we? Please. Have a heart, for God’s sake.

Matchday Eighteen

A Good Day: For Green Island, who came back from behind in Onwere in a most spirited fashion; season’s-best performances from Young and Aldren in particular helping the visitors claw a two-one win. Ultimately though, MarquezOW could barely offer more than their seventh-minute opener, failing to register another shot on Stockley’s goal, and if that’s the best the Apertura’s second-best side can manage, we might as well all pack up and go home.

Ooh, now there’s an idea…

A Bad Day: For pretty much everybody else, with the drive for UICA places over the last month or so apparently taking it out of our major challengers as the Clausura gets underway. An insipid one-nil home defeat for Turkish against Caires Sports, and a similarly unimpressive showing for the PoC in Hodgehill, suggests that we could be in a for a bit of early realignment as far as the title race is concerned. Wooooo, I suppose.

A Bad Day: For Mark Water, jogging on the spot in his penalty box in a desperate attempt to keep warm during the utterly tedious second half in what shall dubiously be titled the Tenderville v CandelariaAM ‘clash’, who proceeded to drop to the grass in agony clutching his, I dunno, let’s say his calf, and was ruled out for a good couple of months not long after. Won’t do much for the Nethertopian CoH effort, if he doesn’t get back on his feet in time. We’re all very sad about that.

A Bad Day: For Jacin Raellis, or possibly Reallis, who received her fifth red card of this season this weekend in the Marbles’ one-nil defeat to Portuguese. That Barreto’s lot are where they are (or, more to the point, where they aren’t) is down in no small part to the Taeshanese veteran’s appalling disciplinary record this term, and one suspects that another recall to the starting XI is pretty much beyond her now, with Adrián Gallo, Freedom Weller and possibly even young teenager Darren Hastings all waiting in the wings to take her place. As an aside, it’s worth noting that Beth Nicholls, Loren Meyer, Brittany Paxson, Courtney Poole, Gloria Villasenior and Marion White have all received their marching orders at least once this term.

Not that I’m making a point, or anything. Just sayin’.

AFC MN Smith 1-0 NAPPC (Rogers 19)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-0 El din Marbles (Oughton 29)
Albrecht Turkish 0-1 Caires Sports (Valinial 60)
Caires City 3-3 McDonald SC (Lewis 61; Agostinho 72 and 77; Sheppard 16, Luke Williams 22, Andryan 67)

Mayo Valley 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Subudhi 3 and 43; Van Dijk 70)
Tenderville United 1-1 Candelaria-Allemali (Night 15; Kenroe 53)

Matchday Nineteen

A Good Week: For goals, as it happens – thirty-three of the buggers, and we even manage to fit a goalless draw in there as well, a lesser-spotted species that should really be hiding away in the deepest jungle, waiting with existential dread to be poked at by a somewhat reluctant Stephen Fry. Although it did involve the Spur, so I don’t suppose we can really justify being all shocked and appalled.

A Better Week: For the PoC, who moved back into second place with an all very exciting comeback victory over MN Smith, and in a seven goal thriller to boot. Which is really rather what one has come to expect of the Harpies this term, somehow, and isn’t it nice how rapidly we’ve gotten used to that status quo. As for the Smudgers, it ain’t getting much better. If Catedral are down, poor things (and losing at home to Gamboa offers little in the way of real hope), then the Smith have to be prime candidates to follow them, even if there’s no clear gap opening up just yet. This was arguably their best performance of the season, but Medlin will need to summon all his skills (?) if his side are to recover from ultimately falling to defeat in what should have been a semi-famous victory.

Albrecht FC and Caires City picked up sizable away wins, meanwhile, but you can see that for yourself, dearest ones.

Albrecht Turkish 1-0 El din Marbles (Innisvale 75)
Caires Sports 1-1 Tenderville United (Made’er 6; Deleks 70)
Candelaria-Allemali 2-4 Green Island (Silva 72 and 80; Kures 10, va Drake 27 and 37, Anwamanë 45+1)
Cathedral City 2-4 Gamboa FC (Solaris 10, Paganel 50; Rojas 10, Chinn 29, Stride 55, Nixon 70)
KT Hotspur 0-0 Arrigo Portuguese
Mayo Valley 0-4 Albrecht FC (Go 3, Tekeste 22, Wanderley 60, Hamizi 58)
McDonald SC 2-2 Marquez-Onwere (Bastard 61, Sheppard 73; Pappas 26, Souto Maior 58)
NAPPC 0-3 Caires City (Lewis 22, González 29, Steele 67)
Port of Clotaire 4-3 AFC MN Smith (Garrett 12, Sánchez García 58, Andrews 71, Archer 85; Budden 20, Postman 52, Van der Laan 74)

See?

Matchday Twenty Two wins in a row! Caires City are back, baby!

Too bad there’s only one more weekend until we break for the World Cup, eh?

It wasn’t coincidental that this round marked the first start for Leo Williams since his return from injury. Though inevitably off the pace a little, and withdrawn with almost half an hour to spare, Williams did his job in a way that Luke Lewis simply couldn’t – his bulk and deftness of touch slotting into City’s manner of play far better than Lewis had managed, despite the former MN Smith striker’s recent run of goals, and giving Port of Clotaire’s Cooper and Andrews a really rough time of it. His own early opener was arguably a distraction from his all-round link play, opening up a string of chances for Agostinho and González and blahdi blahdi blah, so on and such forth, I’m not listening. We still tend to think strikers should actually be there to score goals, first and foremost, in these parts. God only knows how our national team are fourth in the bloody world.

As an aside, it also remains worthy of mentioning that Williams is entirely a product of semi-pro outfit Scruggs Pickings, only moving to City at the age of eighteen – making him a highly unusual individual and handing us some slightly naïve hope for the future, in an era where a much-vaunted academy like Albrecht FC’s is and has been full of Nethertopians, Cafundelenses, Han, Jesseltonians, Sterogans and that. The lower-league clubs really haven’t been pulling their weight when it comes to youth production, despite the best efforts of the CAMAFA, so Williams and his former side really are shining examples.

Anyway, you don’t care about any of that, don’t know why I mentioned it, let’s move on. An entirely deserved two-one win sees City back on form, with the gap on the Harpies closed to just the ten points…

Meanwhile in Tenderville, the Dragons attempted a controlling game against Green Island – playing four at the back rather than their usual three, in a really rather risky and highly out-of-character move that none the less worked a treat. Ultimately, we’ve had five years of GIZ domination now (arright, that’s exaggerating it a teensy bit, but…), with the principal reason – besides the fact that they’re rather handy – being the complete inability of their rivals to find a way of playing against them that works with any consistency. That’s all credit to Massimo, who has a Borg-like quality for adapting in the face of failure (his head doesn’t detach from his body, as far as we know, but we’re still hoping), so it wouldn’t be too bright to see an honourable one-all draw away from home as the beginning of the end – but at least it provides everyone else with a chink of hope.

With MarquezOW enjoying a sticky period indeed, meanwhile, a certain closing-up of the gap between the top four and the rest is underway – with Nakatsuru’s best performance of the season for Albrecht FC and a somewhat low-key ‘derby’ victory for Portuguese over Catedral revitalising Torrealba and Panadero’s distant respective title bids.

AFC MN Smith 1-3 Albrecht FC (Budden 90; Nakatsuru 52 and 88, Hamizi 68)
Albrecht Turkish 1-0 KT Hotspur (Lori 14)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-0 Cathedral City (Randjelovic 40, Macanás 90+1)
Caires City 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Williams 6, González 53; Sánchez García 89)
Gamboa FC 2-3 Mayo Valley (Chambers 15, Chinn 74; Subudhi 42 and 62 and 71)
El din Marbles 2-1 Caires Sports (Pavoni 18, Horrigan 21; Sinjinir 43)
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 NAPPC (Oliveira Tavares 15; Cuesta 4)
McDonald SC 2-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Andryan 2, Sheppard 61)
Tenderville United 1-1 Green Island (Night 85; Anwamanë 78)

Matchday Twenty-One… Okees, lesse, what’re we up to this weekend? Green Island beat some four-nil at home, nothing to report there

Ahh, here’s something pleasantly implausible. Cathedral City’s second victory of the season. Nice.

Since we went all taciturn and that, Catedral went and did what just about everyone expected and went and nabbed Fran Russell from Riverton Olympic. His arrival wasn’t without objections – he’s not a Catedral man, his playing career spent across his native Candelaria before moving to Green Island (but not… ‘Green Island’ Green Island. Just Green Island generally), but no-one can argue what an utterly awesome job he’s done with Zapata’s second team over the last couple of years. Stripped of their finest talents after failing by a couple of spot-kicks to achieve an historic top-flight promotion, a new-look Riverton promptly went and qualified for the SBCC again, but there – one assumes – their story comes to an abrupt halt. Though the Olympic’s supporters are less than chuffed with seeing Russell trot off mid-season – particularly to a club liable to be in the same division as they next term – few can truly begrudge his hopes of awakening this sleeping giant.

With Mark Verdamme’s funds burning a hole in his back pocket, Russell will at least be able to spend for another promotion in the event they do suffer another unceremonious drop, but perhaps it’s too soon to be nailing up that particular coffin for the season. Still fiddling with his favoured XI, Russell handed starts to Enrique Daniel, Rubén García and Oscar Mendoza and was rewarded with an exceptional comeback display against Albrecht Turkish.

Two-nil down at the break, Russell made zip in the way of changes but to his personnel, but clearly shook up his side sufficiently to leave Turkish completely wrong-footed. Fabio Mannasuch may have centuries in the way of extra experience over his Catedral counterpart, but there was only so much he could do from the sidelines – principally, wave his arms about a bit and watch with increasing consternation as the bottom-of-the-table side stormed back to take victory – and leave Turkish ten points shy of the GIZ at the break.

All of a sudden, MarquezOW are in no better a position. Or, to put it another way; a worse one. Comprehensively beaten by Port of Clotaire, they’ve now won fewer than half their games and Costa da Blanco’s excellent start is fading fast. With Portuguese and the Scorpions creeping up ominously behind them, a tilt at a third personal Globe Cup title for the manager may yet prove their best hope for silverware over the next year or so.

Elsewhere, Caires Sports’ one-nil victory over the Spur (not a prime candidate for a DVD release in the club shop, that one) leaves them eighth on a 0 goal difference – but don’t discount that all-important sixth-place finish just yet. Gamboa are still getting the results to leave them comfortably clear of the drop zone meanwhile, with the Shining Sons and Peregrines sharing a point to leave them both just above the bottom three and with everything still to prove.

Basically, though, we’re left hoping for Espy va Drake, Jhanna Young and Don’t-call-me-Michelle Durosa to pick up season-ending injuries at the World Cup, if we’re going to have a remotely entertaining Clausura.

Anyone know any voodoo?

AFC MN Smith 0-1 Gamboa FC (Potter 49)

Matchday Twenty-Two… Righty-doodle, then. Everyone’s back home, so let’s just pretend the last month of action never happened and focus on the real thrilling, moving and thought-provoking story of global football – the CMSC1 title race. Wooooo!

*sigh*

Of course, when we say everyone’s back home, we ignore those poor benighted, or possibly unbenighted, we can’t actually admit to being sure whether a state of benightivity is a good thing or not, and probably should do… We’ll check, one mo.

Well, slap my arse and call me Gurtie. That literal, eh? What a fool I’ve been.

So, point is, we’re missing a couple of dozen Cup of Harmony (no idea… I’ve been told there’s such a tournament, but I’m yet to be convinced) stars, and the presence of a whole load of exhausted World Cupping players also renders this weekend a little pointless. Unfortunately, the fixture list happened to vomit forth a sizable game in the form of freefalling MarquezOW against Albrecht FC.

Shall we have a brief roll call? Well, there was Harry Rosalia – World Cup final almosthero, Harry Rosalia, who really should have been rested for this one but wasn’t. And promptly pulled a muscle in the first half and had to be sub’d. St. Louis, Graves, William, Morrison, all present and accounted for, a central midfield comprising two nineteen year-olds in Go and Kouakou Kouamé, Kim Mihyeon making a rare start up front… As for MarquezOW, no Cincoski, Pappas and O’Brien rested, no Joãio, no Smit, and thusly starts for Sáez, Gatti, Juan Carlos Torres (not the Olympic boxer, that’s just a pure coincidence they happened to share the same name, it’s a very common name, after all, and the fact they came to public attention at more-or-less the same time is one of those funny little things that happen from time to time and… such) and Alejandro Valdez.

The real battle of the game turned out to be between Valdez – a left-back by trade, playing out of position and out of his skin in the centre of the park alongside Tonzing Wang – and Adam Kouakou Kouamé, making the most of Nakatsuru’s injury absence (oh yes, we do do continuity, bitches) and starting to look like a sure starter for next term. Notable, he’s put on a hell of a lot of beef over the last twelve months, and one suspects he may in time move further up the pitch – perhaps even leading the line, with Fahmi Hamizi drifting about behind him, and AKK gave the MarquezOW backline a truly torrid time all afternoon.

He deserved more than the one goal he managed, his failure to add to his thirty-four minute strike coming thanks largely to Valdez. Brushed aside by Kouakou Kouamé for the opener he soon repaid Da Costa Blanco’s trust with a performance that suggests Chris Stewart may well have problems breaking apart any forthcoming partnership between the young left-footer and O’Brien when he returns from his own injury lay-off in a fortnight’s time, and Valdez even played a part in the naranja’s equaliser, finding Oliveira Tavares free to set up Sáez. The next generation’s there, then, even if they’re being squished into geometrically awkward holes a lot of the time, which is nice.

Doesn’t matter to anyone but us, though, so let’s turn our focus momentarily to Green Island being all unpleasant to their latest unsuspecting victims, vis., NAPPC. Even without half their regular back four and with Young rested (fifteen minutes at the end of a game does take it out of one, poor girl), the GIZ never looked in the remotest danger in Peregrinus City, testing Javier Meléndez five times in barely more than five early minutes before Anwamanë finally delivered her fourteenth goal of the season. Green Island continued to press and…

And that’s when it suddenly went very wrong indeed. The term ‘afternoon to forget’ has never applied more strongly to any pair of players than Antonio José Cantero and Marcelo Augusto Conceição Silva, who started in place of Paterson and Raviranjan and proceeded to have westons on a barely credible scale. A slip from the Castillo native – still considered Paterson’s long-term replacement, for reasons we cannot hope to get our heads around – let in Kevin Taylor to equalise, and the second half saw a severely under-strength Peregines side hand the champions a four-one drubbing. A rupee or two on that scoreline would’ve bought you a house with a swimming pool and all the dancing girls you could wish for.

Well alright, a shack in El din with a pond and some locally-reared adolescent prostitutes. Our economy isn’t that bad.

Elsewhere, the PoC and Turkish made the most of the GIZ’s slip, while Portuguese moved forth and McDonald battered Tenderville’s threadbare first XI to move out of the bottom three. Dangnabbit.

Albrecht Turkish 1-0 Mayo Valley (Innisvale 25)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-0 AFC MN Smith (Macanás 42, Martinez 83)

Port of Clotaire 2-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Jackson og 19, Edwards 68)

Matchday Twenty-Three… Zapata. Yes. Let’s start there.

Massimo’s reaction to Cantero and Conceição Silva’s rank awfulness was nothing if not predictable – dropping both, giving George Heybourne a start, and introducing a 3-5-2 with Ben Clayton partnering Anwamanë, Valtheldorien Ealovaul seemingly having fallen terminally out of favour.

It was a brave move indeed against Port of Clotaire, themselves at full strength aside from the Harmoning Tom van Dijk, particularly after losing the previous fixture at Harper Street, but the visitors were soon pushed back by an unexpectedly relentless assault. Valanora versus Sorthern Northland – there was really no contest on this particular outing.

Except… The crucial figure would instead emerge as a Candelariasian, the goalkeeper Karl John. While rather less celebrated than his countryman Rosalia, or the two extensively-named Hispanic ‘keepers in the last C&M squad, and eternally maligned by his involvement in the Vahala Invitational II debacle, John has very quietly been getting on with becoming a very fine custodian indeed – and, this weekend, in front of a global audience of… some people, he pulled off a string of exceptional saves from rather more renowned figures to keep the scoreline goalless. And then launched the goal kick that found Todd Garrett, who layed off for Caleb Edwards, who shot low past Stockley from twenty-five yards out to confirm a one-nil smash-and-grab.

The GIZ’s lead is duly reduced to two points, and the evenness of the division (at least during this brief period) was underlined as MN Smith earned their fifth win of the season. Regular viewers probably won’t need telling who the major side to be upset was – the Smudgers always seem to get a point or three against their de facto arch rivals, Albrecht Turkish, and benefited from the visitors heavily depleted squad to take victory.

Elsewhere, Portuguese went down to ten men late on but still came away with the three points at the McNeil Bingo Arena, leaving them very much now in the title hunt. The El din clásico finished a point apiece – vaguely satisfactory for both sides, but Catedral still look pretty much doomed again and the Marbles are inexplicably sharing twenty-seven points with Mayo and Gamboa – while the Spur’s handy point in Tenderville was undermined somewhat by the sight of Dariegan being stretchered off shortly after half-time. If that’s as bad as it looked, you can wave b’bye to a rather promising season…

AFC MN Smith 2-1 Albrecht Turkish (Postman 20, Eenpalu 43; Robinson 28)
Albrecht FC 2-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Morrison 40, Kim 64)
Caires City 1-2 Arrigo Portuguese (González 32; Lacamoire 45+1, Macanás 62)
Gamboa FC 0-2 Marquez-Onwere (Oliveira Tavares 14, Pappas 41)
Green Island 0-1 Port of Clotaire (Edwards 79)
El din Marbles 1-1 Cathedral City (Soro 31; Paganel 69)
Mayo Valley 3-0 Caires Sports (NorthWalker 30, Tillström 38, Hostetter 84)

Tenderville United 1-1 KT Hotspur (Holtz 42; Smith 54)

CMS Cup Last Sixteen

Good Week: For the PoC, who got knocked out.

Well, come on… They’ve only won this competition once, they haven’t done well in it for a dog’s age, the fans couldn’t care less (even a highly traditional club like the Harpies few the CMS Cup as an unnecessary distraction and one must recall that, despite the CAMAFA’s protestations to the contrary, a nationwide knockout competition is a relatively new addition to the Candelariasian footballing calendar), and they’ve got altogether bigger fish to fry. An under strength side went down at home to Portuguese, with Muscat no doubt hoping that the cup will continue to provide a distraction for the rest of the current top four, including Panadero’s Arrigo outfit who’ve never won this competition and would really rather like to.

Bad Week: For MarquezOW, who got knocked out.

Casual viewers might be surprised that the naranja have only lifted this trophy twice, such has been their consistent competitiveness and, with their aims of a first league title for a couple of decades fading fast, Ricardo Wendell no doubt put plenty of pressure on Blanco da Cruz to be all competitive like.

And, to be fair, you can’t really apportion any blame for their exit, coming after a classic replay at home to Turkish. With both teams still missing key stars – including Turkish’s entire front line – it was left to a mixture of perennial reserves and old warhorses to light up Thursday evening, with Taylor Vostakova providing a hint of what was to follow inside sixty seconds, the versatile forward breaking past Gloria Villasenior to receive Darren Robinson’s perfect long-ball and smashing his effort past S’toris. A Pappas corner soon had MarquezOW drawing level, but ten minutes later Kjarik Tashkir headed past his countryman and the visitors began a famous

Mayo Valley 3-0 Brayton Town (Hostetter 56, NorthWalker 61, Armas 85)

Matchday Twenty-Four… While there’s valid debate to be had in other, far-off lands regarding which club can said to be the ‘biggest’ in given country x – and even how that sobriquet should be best apportioned – we have no need for such a national conversation ourselves. It’s Albrecht FC. No argument there. The sky is blue, the sun rises from the east, it’s all the fault of them bloody moslems, innit, and Albrecht Football Club are the biggest in the country.

It’s a tag that’s proving tricky to hang onto.

Now, alright. Calm yourselves, angry of Brayton. Look, here’s another photo of Suri Cruise, that always helps your blood pressure. Nobody’s about to throw the babby out with the bathwater (we’re not gypsies for heaven’s sake, are we?), and we’re not suggesting that just because those oriental gentlemen appear to have pissed off from whence they came (we did warn you), leaving the Scorpions with a mountain of debt the size of Chosen Hopeless Nothingness, they’re on the verge of oblivion. They’re a powerful club with powerful friends. They’ll be okay.

Never the less, everything in life is transient. Albrecht FC have no manifest destiny to dominate. While they remain in their cramped, increasingly decrepit little home, feeding on the scraps of their youth set-up and slipping further into obscurity however, a shiny new chance is being presented to the rising forces of inner-city Albrecht. Semi-pro or amateur or even not yet in existence, community sides from nobby Bramlive to the hellhole that is Mary’s Park must be rubbing their hands together in glee. The Scorpions’ out-of-town supporters will soon drift off to Green Island, MarquezOW, Caires City and all as the former greats from Songstress fade away, and before too long the MSS will be hosting CMSC2 football and barely ten thou every fortnight.

Yes, ladies and gents. They’ve lost their fourth game of the season. Someone alert ofcom.

Presumably, because they’re from that there big fancy Albrecht, with its book-reading and cosmopolitan culture and such, as well as commonly supported by the lower orders and their turbans, Albrecht FC’s imminent demise appears to have been ongoing in much of the press (partikerly the Albrecht press, who tend not to step foot in the godawful place if they can help it) for the past thirty years but, you have to admit, going down four-one at home to Green Island isn’t an awesome sign. As a game, there wasn’t much one could say about it – the GIZ simply outplayed their hosts from start to finish, with Rosalia and William repeatedly forced into last-ditch saves and tackles off the visitors’ pointy, feminine forward line.

A true dynasty now, it’s hard not to see Green Island dominating the league for years to come. Frankly, we’re just running out of ways to say it.

Let’s say some other things. Turkish have a decent squad, let’s say that. A decent squad with a decent degree of depth, but the make-up of this Cup of Harmony was never going to play to their strengths and Caires City made short work of them this weekend. With Port of Clotaire held at home by McDonald, the GIZ’s week just kept getting better. MarquezOW’s late victory over Portuguese, meanwhile, was tarnished by a nasty-looking knock to Oliveira Tavares.

A gloriously threadbare Nethie derby saw Tenderville – who’re still fantastically middling this term, have we mentioned that recently? – take the three points, while Cassius Salt scored from the spot at Cathedral City to keep KT Hotspur’s top four dreams alive.

AFC MN Smith 1-1 Caires Sports (Budden 88; Belmore 90)
Albrecht FC 1-4 Green Island (Dorack og 30; Aldren 5, Durosa 32, va Drake 61, Anwamanë 70)
Caires City 2-0 Albrecht Turkish (Lewis 33, Agostinho 60)
Cathedral City 0-1 KT Hotspur (Salt 90)
Gamboa FC 2-2 Candelaria-Allemali (Chambers 47, Chinn 90+2; Alvis 33, Silva 50)
Marquez-Onwere 1-0 Arrigo Portuguese (Sáez 89)
Mayo Valley 1-0 El din Marbles (Johansson 79)
Port of Clotaire 0-0 McDonald SC
Tenderville United 3-1 NAPPC (Night 44, Deleks 68, Lewis 83; Cuesta 53)

Matchday Twenty-Five… Green Island. They’re good and that. Five-nil over Gamboa this weekend. Tore ‘em apart, so they did.

Right, what next? This weekend saw the return of a whole bunch of Rushmoris – Sterogans, Pocoans, West Zirconians and Nethertopians, oodles of ‘em, to fill out the ranks and bring plenty of relieved sighs to managers up and down the country. Those who actually had their players back, of course, were less than chuffed to have their favourite excuse for unexpected failure pulled from beneath them, but ye can’t please everyone, can you?

Among those benefiting greatly were NAPPC who… lost, fine, but that was against Port of Clotaire, so it’s understandable; and Tenderville who… also… lost. Away at Cathedral City. For the Cats’ second win of the season. My word, they really are cack, aren’t they? I thought it was just a vicious rumour.

Never mind. It’s a different picture for the El din Marbles, who could welcome the Visser cousins back into their warm eastislandian norks. And, ooh… lose. Away at MN Smith. Three-nil.

The Marbles truly are a head-scratcher. Looking, at least in theory, a distant reflection at most of their Soro-era selves; the Marbles play reasonably attractive, if a trifle robust, football and certainly don’t look as confuzzled with life in general as they once did. But it still isn’t working. The defence and midfield are working well, but only on entirely separate basis…es, as if they’ve never been formally introduced before. During those rare moments when it all comes together, everyone seems fully satisfied and ready for a beautiful future – but before too long the back four and midfield five soon wake up, stare with horror into each other eyes, hastily throw on their clothes and retreat back to their own flats without so much as swapping numbers. And poor old Erik Visser gamely runs about up front looking utterly miserable. They’re not going down – but otherwise the club seem to be pottering around waiting for Luis Jiménez’s voice to break and generally treading water. Sad, really.

Turkish, Portuguese and MarquezOW all squat on forty-forty points, meanwhile – fully ten off the lead, and not nearly enough to make the top four this time last term – while Albrecht FC registered yet another draw and were fortunate even in that. Doomed, if you ask me.

AFC MN Smith 3-0 El din Marbles (Van der Laan 30; Budden 68 and 90+2)
Albrecht Turkish 2-0 Marquez-Onwere (Bakker 8, Alexander 89)
Caires Sports 0-0 Caires City
Candelaria-Allemali 1-3 Arrigo Portuguese (Silva 78; Álvarez 21, Salgado 45+1, Randjelovic 76)
Cathedral City 2-1 Tenderville United (Pallotta 23, Ferreira og 80; Deleks 20)
Green Island 5-0 Gamboa FC (Paterson 1, Durosa 20, Tinúviel 54, va Drake 66, Kures 80)
KT Hotspur 1-0 Mayo Valley (Nilsson 75)
McDonald SC 0-0 Albrecht FC
NAPPC 1-3 Port of Clotaire (Van Dyke 80; Ham 16, Sánchez García 37, Van Dijk 49)

Matchday Twenty-Six… Aha, me hearties. Has Riverton Olympic miracle-worker Fran Russell got it right at Catedral at last?

Somewhat jammy though their victory over Mayo Valley was, a second straight set of three points lifts the Cats rightback into contention. Alright, they still need to make up eight points from eight games, but there were some confident performances to enjoy here from their young stars – enough, certainly, to suggest the squad will be ripped apart should they indeed succumb to the drop – and their quiet young manager appears in a boisterous mood. Talented though he is, he’s still one of those deeply annoying moaners, particularly after victories, berating the standard of the refereeing, the distracting presence of Ilga NorthWalker (former Catedral star Ilga NorthWalker… didn’t really think that one through, our Fran) and bemoaning the fact he couldn’t make mid-season signings. Because he’s the only manager in Candelariasian football to suffer that indignity, isn’t he?

Curiously, if this week’s rumours are to be believed, he won’t have to for a whole lot longer…

Elsewhere, Albrecht FC took to the field without Harry Rosalia – ruled out for the rest of the season with an embarrassing personal problem (a sink plunger, who knew?) – but managed to take away a one-nil off of still disappointing NAPPC, while Portuguese’s bid to be almost as good as stupid sexy Carlos says they are suffered at home to Green Island.

Turkish, meanwhile, who get Calabrese and Lori back next weekend, turned around a two-goal deficit in Allemali. And McDonald drew nils-all. Again.

AFC MN Smith 0-2 KT Hotspur (Nilsson 21, Collins 54)
Albrecht FC 1-0 NAPPC (Hamizi 46)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-2 Green Island (Macanás 51; Aldren 12, Anwamanë 54)
Caires City 0-1 El din Marbles (Pavoni 53)
Candelaria-Allemali 2-5 Albrecht Turkish (Jurrie 10 and 19; Werner 22, Robinson 25, Bakker 50, Innisvale 59 and 85)
Cathedral City 2-1 Mayo Valley (Pallotta 31, Paganel 59; Szatmári 62)
Gamboa FC 0-0 McDonald SC
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Caires Sports (Souto Maior 69; Belmore 35)
Tenderville United 2-2 Port of Clotaire (Martinez 10, Alan 25; Sánchez García 24, O’Airmeadhaigh 45+1)

Matchday Twenty-Seven… Well, here was the Big One – Turkish travelling to Zapata. A victory, and it’s all back on. Defeat, and it’s all over. What a ridiculously simplistic way to look at the situation. Let’s run with it.

The visitors actually started rather well. With Werner and Lori both playing stifling game in deep and Mannasuch going with one up front, Turkish certainly weren’t fighting fire with fire, never mind playing to their strengths. For a goodly long while however, it all worked out rather nicely.

And then… genius. Amidst Green Island’s galaxy of stars, one could be forgiven for missing the emergence of Jameson Aldren as a truly special player. A dynastic starlet in the style of Young – his John father likewise a professional, albeit at a rather more lowly level, and brother Justin currently a benchwarmer at Portuguese – the twenty-one year-old could well be set to force his way past fellow Green native Lee McKenzie in C&M reckoning after a sublime first full season. While the presence of Durosa and va Drake, among others, has been able to mask the odd youthful failing but his talent for picking the killer pass, finding slivers of space and – crucially – scoring makes him a clear Young Player of the Season contender. Even a player of Dwier Titenburg Jr’s standard was forced to hold up his pretty, pretty hands this weekend and acknowledge the young man’s ability as Aldren, playing neat one-twos with Young and va Drake as he drifted into the box, looked up, and curled a beautiful shot past Lyle Gwyther.

Let’s be honest – no-one really expected that youth production would be among Massimo’s foremost concerns at Green Island, with ‘Allan Puckett’ a name that, for good reason, doesn’t suggest inherent pointyness in his role as senior YTS coach. But, if Academy league performances are to be believed – along with young winger Jacob Pond’s exceptional displays for Riverton this term – this club’s future is extraordinarily bright.

Turkish’s own Vanorian revolution may yet reap similar rewards, but for now Mannasuch is relying on more prosaic products. Aldren could run rings around his opposite number, Denny Alexander, all day and all night if he had to, but the Turkish ‘star’ can still deliver a monster of a free-kick on occasion – and did just that, not only for the visitors’ hardly deserved equaliser but for the goal that saw them take an improbably lead. Aldren, however, would certainly have the last laugh – his tenth goal of the season, four minutes from time, seeing him capitalise on a Gwyther slip, while worse was to follow for the young Turkish ‘keeper barely sixty seconds later – taking out Anwamanë, he was forced to note his red card from a horizontal position, having done himself rather more of a mischief than her and being stretchered off, his season done and dusted.

Remarkably, eighteen year-old sub Cockburn Wu palmed out the shaken Anwamanë’s penalty kick, but Durosa followed up to hand the GIZ a victory that took them nine points clear at the top of the table. As for Turkish, they cling on to forth, and will be most grateful for Paxson’s return from the Harmony next weekend.

Elsewhere, we were treated to another display of the team spirit at play in the KT Hotspur camp. With a far from inspiring squad – especially with Dariegan looking a long way from fitness right now – Revault’s men are continuing to string together impressive results, as well as the best defensive record in the division, and fought for eighty minutes against Caires City’s side until a breakaway orchestrated by Rataran ended in Shawn O’Connell deflecting past Andy Nilsson.

City’s hearts had already been broken with Leo Williams forced off the field of play yet again. The forward’s persistent ankle problems are becoming a real concern now, for Errant Knights and C&M supporters alike, and he looks set to be hurried towards the operating table as the club’s season continues to drift its merry way towards utter anonymity.

Albrecht FC 1-0 Port of Clotaire (Wanderley 53)
Caires Sports 3-1 Candelaria-Allemali (T’saal 10, Sinjinir 34, Valinial 44)
Cathedral City 0-1 AFC MN Smith (Rogers 45+1)
Green Island 3-2 Albrecht Turkish (Aldren 37 and 86, Durosa 89; Alexander 61, Bakker 75)
KT Hotspur 1-0 Caires City (O’Connell og 80)
Marquez-Onwere 3-0 El din Marbles (Sáez 4, Keyes 35, Gatti 88)
Mayo Valley 0-0 Tenderville United
McDonald SC 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Sheppard 6; Macanás 35)
NAPPC 3-0 Gamboa FC (Cuesta 5 and 59, Van Dyke 69)

CMS Cup Quarter-Finals… Replays! No end of the buggers!

The only tie decided on the night was in Rose of Sharon – one-nil, as you might imagine, but it was the visiting Turkish team that took the honours. Cue sighs of relief from telly bosses far and wide, then, with Mannasuch’s boys and girl much the more tempting draw should they make their first final since XXX.

One suspects that by the time the semis roll around they’ll have nothing else left to play for, domestically or overseas, while it was no surprise that Caires City were also giving it their all mid-week in an attempt to salvage something from a dog of a season. Their visit to Hodgehill was one of the most one-sided nil-nils you could ever see, with Luke Lewis – and he must be in for some sort of award this term, after doing a sterling goalscoring job every time he’s come in for hopalong Williams – peppering Greg Tipping’s goal without success.

The return leg, stuffed into the calendar on a Friday night, was a different story – thanks largely to the inspired form of Salvador González. Having identified that the Toyur duo of Johansson and Lilja appeared less than comfortable with the former Catedral midfielder, Dionísio handed the twenty-six year-old a free role – a hat-trick being the ultimate result, with Nic Lloyd capping off González’s first half brace to down Mayo comprehensively. With City requiring something close to a complete overhaul before next season, their entire focus is now surely on making this final.

Though eight points ahead in the league, Portuguese are perhaps in a similar situation and the desperate need to win something during the modern era of Candelariasian football is weighing increasingly heavy upon Morales and Panadero alike. It took a replay to see them past Alvery Blades, mind you, and a late Yannick de Woudt headed corner at that, but they’re so frustratingly inconsistent that they absolutely mustn’t be ruled out.

Aaaand then the other one – Green Island versus Albrecht FC. Well, at least we can say for the first leg that it was rather closer than the previous meeting; Graves and William coping much better with the inevitable assault and Drake Malan in goal excelling himself in a rare chance to impress potential new employers. The GIZ still found the net, of course, but had to wait until the seventy-eight minute all the same.

Not long after, Fahmi Hamizi equalised. If there’s one obvious contender to steal from Aldren his anointed YpotS crown, the Jesseltonian striker may well be the man. Clearly set to lead Albrecht FC’s line for many a year to come, his chances have been damaged by injury and the competition offered by Kim, Wanderley and Kouakou Kouamé, but there’s few players out there who can get the better of Ladordren Dorack quite so easily.

The replay at the MSS saw Hamizi put Albrecht FC into an early lead, before Nakatsuru – on his first start since the World Cup – went and did something really rather unexpected, and scored the winner.

Leaving Massimo, with his much-vaunted record as a cup boss, once again out before even the semi-finals.

Curious.

Updated coëfficients are now available.

The entry quotas for the next season of UICA competitions are as follows:
TakilQuip Champions’ Cup 18: The number of teams allowed is determined according to league coëfficients, with the following distribution:
  • Associations ranked 1–6 (Cafundéu, Candelaria And Marquez, Capitalizt SLANI, Septentrionia, Elves Security Forces, and Ad’ihan) are allowed to enter four teams.
  • Associations ranked 7–16 (Jasĭyun, Vephrall, Sorthern Northland, Dancougar, Estresse Intenso, Aguazul, West Zirconia, Taeshan, Krytenia, and Nethertopia) are allowed to enter three teams.
  • Associations ranked 17 and below, and unranked associations, are allowed to enter two teams.
Globe Cup 15: Every association is allowed to enter three teams.
Samseong Series B Champions’ Cup 15: Every assocation is allowed to enter four teams.

The following assocations did not provide evidence of results generated in the previous season, and will be required it to satisfy this requirement (e.g., by posting a league table for their next season) in order to enter teams in the next season of UICA competition:
  • Estresse Intenso
  • Nethertopia (per precedent, Tenderville United and NAPPC are exempt)

The next season will start after World Cup 48, but not necessarily immediately after World Cup 48. As usual, a notice of the exact deadline will be posted a week in advance.

Una Serie, Week 6: Results & Table

Salaga F.C 0 – 2 Pythons
Pythons maintained their winning streak by overcoming Salaga away from home. The reigning champions seem determined to prove the loss of Ishmael Van Dyke hasn’t affected them and taking maximum points from their opening 6 games is a good way to prove this.
The fans heavy criticism of manager Mark Sloan over the sale of their star striker has since subsided as Enrico Dossena has stepped to the forefront and hit a brace against Salaga.
The young star’s opener came just before half time following a succession of near misses. Dossena found himself open at the near post and managed to squeeze the ball underneath Umit Ozan in the home goal. He doubled his tally and the goal deficit in the second half with a penalty after being tripped in the box by Xavi Torres.
Salaga manager Khalid Farooz shrugged off the defeat

“It’s always difficult against the champions, atleast they didn’t hit us for six this time though.”

Augustus 0 – 0 Valengren Kickers
Neither side looked capable of breaking the dead lock with both teams exhibiting a rather scrappy midfield.
The best chance of the game fell to Augustus new boy Kristoffer Svenson who managed to head the ball wide from 8 inches out of the goal. Following that missed opportunity both sides continued much in the same way with neither having a clear opportunity to score.
Valengren fans were happy however to go home with a point with one expressing

“Every point this year is important. We don’t have much shape or strength in depth and have to grab every point we can take, otherwise we are f****d.

Skyte City 2 – 0 Real Minanda
A resurgent Skyte picked up another three points as they looked to put last year’s terrible season behind them.
Skyte currently find themselves second in the league and look to continue in their quest to forget the previous season, however there are rumors the board are looking to replace caretaker manager Neil Howzer with Jonastown manager Ricky Ortega. Much to the displeasure of fans and players alike.

“Neil has done a great job since he took over in the summer and it’s only fair he gets to continue. Bringing in a new coach will only disrupt the players.”

Words of goalkeeper and captain Fabien Fabianzki. However at present the speculation as to whether Skyte will make an approach for the J-Town boss is yet to be substantiated, with no board members willing to comment.

On the pitch new boy Gaston Batista opened the scoring with a thunderous freekick on the hour mark before veteran striker James Phillips doubled the lead minutes later with a powerful header at the back post.

Belle-Isle 2 – 2 Royal Khaldoon
Belle-Isle were on the unfortunate end of a Royal comeback. The team who find themselves at the foot of the table took an unexpected lead in the 17th minute when David Pallister’s shot took a deflection off Ron Johnson and wrong footed Somewhereistonian Nikolai Baskovic. BIS doubled their lead 20 minutes later when Pallister’s luck again proved decisive when his shot was adjudged to have been handled by Tomasz Poborsky. Pallister took the penalty and placed the ball down the middle.
Royal came to life in the second half and Karbul Bak pulled them back to one goal behind with a well taken scissor kick, driving the ball into the Belle-Isle goal. Royal maintained their pressure and it paid off in the 87th minute when Sargossa Juan Segura beat the offside trap and rounded the keeper to slot home into an empty net.

Almondvale 1 – 0 Athletic Khaldoon
Almondvale maintained third place with a last gasp winner over Athletic Khaldoon. Adrian Belmont’s shot was scrambled off the line before on loan midfielder Miguel González could side foot past Brad Johnson.
After the game Fletcher Goodwin confessed

“I never lost faith and always believed we could win. We were the better team for 90 minutes and completely deserved the 3 points. We know Athletic aren’t pushovers but today they lacked any spirit and didn’t really challenge us.”

A comment which didn’t go down well with Athletic manager Alan Fenwick

“We challenged for every ball and pushed played on an even plain for 90 minutes until they stole a lucky winner. If anything we deserved a point from this game.”

Ridgemont Town 1 – 2 Jonastown
Performances like this are why United’s manager has caught the eye of the Skyte board. Jonastown dominated this game from start to end and only came undone via a Ridgemont long throw which threw the defence into a shambles.
Ridgemont took the lead through Craig Jones who benefited from Ahmed Khan’s long throw which managed to elude every J-Town defender for Jones to head in from 6 yards.
J-Town rallied and equalized just before half time thanks to Somewhereistonian Alexis Berklas who fired home from the edge of the box.
After the break the visitors continued to push and Cafundeu striker Carlos Borges well worked one-two with Hidalgo put the striker clean through on goal. Borges composure was greater than the Ridgemont keeper’s and he managed to wait until the keeper went down before placing the ball in the corner. After the game Ortega commented

“There is nothing in the rumors connecting me to the manager’s job at Skyte. I am happy here at Jonastown United and I want to take the team forward and perhaps qualify for the Globe Cup.”

The West Zirconian National League reaches its sixteenth season:

Code: Select all
Season  Champions             Runners-up             Third Place

14      Banks                Bradley Hornets        Houghton Kestrels
15      Bradley Hornets      Mort Park              Markham
* now playing as Etruria

Can Banks bounce back? Can Bradley Hornets become the new Banks? Can Mort Park actually win something? Let us see:

It took twelve matches for the last unbeaten run to end. Not Banks, nor Bradley Hornets, not even Mort Park, but the unlikely Taylor's Cross. Although ever-present in the First Division, they have hardly ever set it alight. Except this time. Bradley Hornets, Markham and Etruria were hot on their heels, though, with Banks in a surprising fifteenth.

By half-way, the Foxes were still holding on to their lead, with Bradley Hornets four behind and Markham a further four behind. Still, there was plenty of opportunity for that to change. Sure enough, it did, when Bradley Hornets caught them up. However, just as it was looking like a sure Hornets-Foxes one-two, Mort Park and Stanley United came from nowhere to challenge, and together with the Hornets were in contention as the last match approached.

Bradley Hornets must have been favourites, at home to formerly doomed Hyland Town. Stanley United, at home to struggling Civil Service, must have also fancied their chances, while Mort Park must have been outsiders, away at Houghton Kestrels.

The vital last day results were:
Bradley Hornets 1-0 Hyland Town
Houghton Kestrels 3-0 Mort Park
Stanley United 6-1 Civil Service

giving the Hornets a second consecutive title. The relegation of city rivals Bradley Swifts only made the occasion that bit sweeter.

Could the excitement of the top flight be matched?

Crompton Town were the front-runners from the start, and by half-time had built up a nine-point lead over Ashton Rovers in second. Having said that, ten other teams had their eyes on that second spot too.

Then suddenly Crompton collapsed, allowing the chasing pack to catch up, and AFC Stanton to overtake them. However, their first-half form kept them in the competition, and as the last game approached, this division also had three teams in contention. Crompton, leading by a point, were away at Anderton United. AFC Stanton were at home to Felton Athletic, and Ashton Rovers were away at New Toronto. You would have put your money on Stanton, but would it have paid off?

The final results:
AFC Stanton 4-4 Felton Athletic
Anderton United 1-3 Crompton Town
New Toronto 4-0 Ashton Rovers

giving Crompton the title, and Stanton a return to the top flight.

Not forgetting the Cup, of course:

14      Stanley United      St. Martin Athletic     1-1aet (3-0pen)
 15      Banks               Mort Park               3-2aet

Let us begin, as is customary, in the First Round. Culshaw Town started again where they left off last season with a 3-1 win at Moorcroft City. Cup débutants Knifton Town and KVV Koehorst started their campaigns off with upsets, 6-4 at home to Walton and 2-1 at Felton respectively.

First Round
Moorcroft City 1-3 Culshaw Town
Stanley Athletic 1-2 Anderton United
Crompton Town 2-2 Wolverton Town
Replay: Wolverton Town 1-1 Crompton Town (1-1 AET) (Wolverton Town wins 1-0 on penalty kicks)
Mount Vernon 1-2 Kirkham Town
Currie 3-1 Ashton Rovers
Underwood Town 0-2 Moorcroft Wanderers
Tîm Cymru 2-4 Anderton Town
AFC Stanton 4-1 Prifysgol Gymraeg Caernewydd
New Toronto 3-0 West Coast Angels
Knifton Town 6-4 Walton
Kesterton 1-0 Heppenstall Town
Hilton Athletic 2-1 Oglesby United
Redwood University 3-1 St. Martin Medical Institute
Felton Athletic 1-2 KVV Koehorst

And on to the banana-skin-laden Second Round. Kirkham Town's 3-2 win at Markham was the biggest upset, but let it not detract from the others, namely AFC Stanton's 4-2 win over East Snaith, Anderton Town's 3-2 win over Combined Armed Forces and Knifton Town's 1-0 win at First Division underdogs Houghton Hawks. An interesting town-gown match in Redwood saw Forest win 2-1 against the University.

Second Round
East Snaith 2-2 AFC Stanton
Replay: AFC Stanton 4-2 East Snaith
Moorcroft Wanderers 2-3 Wolverton Town
Anderton Town 3-2 Combined Armed Forces
Culshaw Town 0-1 New Toronto
St. Martin Athletic 2-2 Bradley Swifts
Replay: Bradley Swifts 4-2 St. Martin Athletic
Taylor's Cross 4-1 KVV Koehorst
Redwood Forest 2-1 Redwood University
Houghton Hawks 0-1 Knifton Town
Stanley United 3-2 Hilton Athletic
Currie 1-2 Sephton County
Houghton Kestrels 1-1 Kesterton
Replay: Kesterton 1-2 Houghton Kestrels
Anderton United 3-3 Bradley Hornets
Replay: Bradley Hornets 2-0 Anderton United
St. Andrew's 1-3 Hyland Town
Mort Park 4-2 Civil Service
Markham 2-3 Kirkham Town
Banks 4-1 Etruria

Now it gets serious. Tie of the round must surely be Mort Park's 6-5 win over Bradley Hornets.

Third Round
Knifton Town 2-3 Hyland Town
Sephton County 2-1 Redwood Forest
Mort Park 6-5 Bradley Hornets
Taylor's Cross 3-1 Kirkham Town
Anderton Town 1-1 AFC Stanton
Replay: AFC Stanton 5-1 Anderton Town
Banks 3-0 Houghton Kestrels
New Toronto 1-1 Wolverton Town
Replay: Wolverton Town 0-1 New Toronto
Bradley Swifts 5-3 Stanley United

Now most of the men and boys have been separated, along came the Quarter-Finals, which completed the task.

Quarter-Final
Taylor's Cross 4-1 AFC Stanton
Mort Park 0-4 Bradley Swifts
Banks 4-1 Sephton County
New Toronto 2-3 Hyland Town

On to the Semi-Final, where Banks' domestic slump was complete.

Semi-Final
Banks 3-3 Hyland Town
Hyland Town 1-0 Banks
Aggregate: Banks 3-4 Hyland Town

Taylor's Cross 1-1 Bradley Swifts
Bradley Swifts 1-4 Taylor's Cross
Aggregate: Taylor's Cross 5-2 Bradley Swifts

Hyland Town-Taylor's Cross hardly sounds like an appetising Final, but it proved to be one, with the Foxes collapsing at the crucial moment in league and cup alike.

Final
Hyland Town 2-1 Taylor's Cross (at Marc Edwards Memorial Stadium, Redwood)

At the half way stage

And so we reach week 22, or mid-season and it appears the $20 million Royal Khaldoon splashed on midfielder Vytautas Törk is working as the team from the capital find themselves precariously balanced on top of the table by a single point. A few dodgy results has seen three time champions Pythons slip to second, but the gulf between the top two and everyone else is a huge 11 points.
Jonastown United have managed to keep hold of manager Ricky Ortega and he has guided them to third place at the mid-way point. If he can maintain this tempo and the good vibes around the Caiman Stadium. Ridgemont and Augustus find themselves tucked comfortably behind them in joint 4th and will be looking to sling shot their way past J-Town during the second stage of the season. Behind them Skyte City have capitalized on their new found cojones and the fact Neil Howzer has stuck around. With a steady coach at the helm Skyte looked destined to find themselves in the top half of the table again and like many fans suggest, where they belong.
Athletic Khaldoon are once again embroiled in that mid-table battle they have become accustomed to and going head-to-head with them are an underperforming Almondvale side whose high expectations for this season look to be headed down the drain despite manager Fletcher Goodwin stating there’s another 22 games to go before this season ends. Real Minanda complete the mid-table places and will look to continue much in the same way to maintain their Una Serie status.
The bottom three are only separated by 5 and as everybody suspected, Salaga, Valengren and Belle-Isle are those scrapping for survival. Having won only 1 game at home Belle-Isle need to improve their home form if they are to stand a chance, they will also have to beat both Salaga and Valengren in the relegation battle – a feat they have been unable to achieve at this half way stage.

Elsewhere Villa Ortiz find themselves top of League I and look to finally return to the Una Serie after a 3 year absence. However Barbossa are looking to crash that party and return to the Una Serie themselves. In League II, the top 4 can only be separated by 2 points setting up the second half of the season for an exciting conclusion.

As it appears unlikely that Dancougar will complete scorination of a college season before the next IUCC deadline, we're going to ignore RPinin this time around and just announce competitors based on the most recent completed season. And by that, I mean we're going to throw the results out the window and ask a committee to do it. It's okay, soon there will be results - glorious results! - for seasons and tournaments, all crushed into a single report that will be painful to read and even peruse.

Thane College, defending champions of the IUCC, gains one of Dancougar's three slots

The remaining two slots will be taken by nobody and nobody. Wait, what? Yes, Dancougar is giving up two of its three slots for this tournament as part of a self-imposed sanction in the wake of the last IUCC registration snafu. The Sports Ministry requests that the IUCC committee not extend additional invitations to Dancougaran teams to fill out the allotment.

To finish the whole charade, here are the results of the playoff:

Semi-Final
Currie 3-0 Ashton Rovers
Ashton Rovers 2-1 Currie
Aggregate: Currie 4-2 Ashton Rovers

Moorcroft Wanderers 5-1 Redwood Forest
Redwood Forest 1-2 Moorcroft Wanderers
Aggregate: Moorcroft Wanderers 7-2 Redwood Forest

Final
Currie 0-1 Moorcroft Wanderers (at City of Houghton Stadium)

So Moorcroft Wanderers, after a season in the Second Division wilderness, return, replacing Redwood Forest.

So the qualifications are as follows:
TQCC: Bradley Hornets, Stanley United, Hyland Town.
Globe Cup: Mort Park, Taylor's Cross, Markham.
SBCC: Crompton Town, AFC Stanton, Currie, Ashton Rovers.

As the only stadium capable of hosting the TQCC final (Manchester Street) has already done so, bids for the foreseeable future will simply be for the other two competition finals. As Williamson Park hosted the last Globe Cup final, only the following will be entered:

SBCC: Whitby Park, Snaith (capacity 32,500)

Week 23

Pythons 1 – 0 Jonastown United

Pythons retake the league lead with a scrappy win over J-Town. The home side pressurized the visitors for much of the game and were rewarded with a deflected goal in the 77th minute.
International midfielder Dean Bowyer found space on the edge of the box and rifled in a shot which rebounded off the outstretched leg of Sargossan Javier Vilche and took the ball beyond the J-Town keeper.
Frederico could have doubled the lead in the 84th minute when he was left unmarked at the back post but the striker scuffed his effort and saw the ball trickle wide of the goal.
Jonastown defended well and will feel they at least deserved a point. Manager Ricky Ortega commented

“We were under pressure for most of this game but we dealt well with it. The goal was a fluke and I am so disappointed for the players and the fans. We’ll be looking to bounce back next week and get three points to continue our push for a Globe Cup spot.”

Augustus 1 – 0 Royal Khaldoon
The local derby ended with Augustus the victors, knocking Royal Khaldoon off top spot in the league. Augustus Koseli midfielder Kazim Hayrettinoglu scored his first goal in an Augustus shirt in the first half. A well worked passing move down the left wing left the midfielder available, free on the edge of the box to curl the ball beyond Nikolai Baskovic.
Khaldoon came close to an equalizer through Juan Segura who met a clever over-the-top ball from Vytautas Törk only to have his volley crash cruelly against the Augustus bar.
The three points move Augustus into third in the league and manager Gianfranco Vianna believes the club can still crash the TQCC places.

“There are still 20 games to play and 60 points to be won. We can still make the dream TQCC come true.”

Salaga F.C 2 – 2 Belle-Isle on Sea
This relegation scrap ended in a brawl with a number of players fighting in the tunnel after the game.
Belle-Isle took the lead through William Varney, but were immediately pipped back when Ugo Stowell headed home from a corner. Salaga then took the lead just before half time when record signing Benito Gabrini who managed to beat two defenders before putting the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs.
Belle-Isle then stole a late equalizer when David Pallister went down in the box. The striker tumbled under a Conrad Magull challenge and was awarded the penalty. The Salaga players reacted badly as they believed Pallister should be booked for simulation and a heated confrontation began in the Salaga box with all 22 players involved. The referee regained control and Pallister scored from the penalty spot.
The argument continued after the game and a number of players were involved in a fracas. The incident is currently being looked into by the QPMAFA.

Skyte City 3 – 0 Valengren Kickers
Strugglers Valengren were easily thwarted by Skyte who scored all three goals in the first half. Sargossan Gaston Bastia opened the scoring in only the third minute following a long ball up field which the Kickers defence failed to deal with.
Bastia assisted the second when he cut the ball back across the Kickers box for James Phillips to cheekily backheel home to double the lead.
Sorthern Northland midfielder Amets Mendiluze corner caused confusion in the Kickers box for Starblaydi defender Onome Agu to power home a header to finish off Valengren after only 42 minutes.
Neil Howzer made a few substitutions for the second half, resting players expected to play in the Trofeo Royal as Skyte look to gain some silverware this year.

Almondvale 0 – 2 Real Minanda
Almondvale’s poor season continued as Real Minanda capitalized on some dodgy goalkeeping from Jerome Makandwire. The goal keeper’s first error saw him charge out of his box to meet Minanda forward Ayhan Genc only to have the striker easily round him and slot home into an empty goal.
Makandwire’s second mistake saw him attempt to punch the ball clear only to miss the ball entirely. Fortunately Alan Sherington’s effort was tame and was easily cleared off the line.
Minanda’s second goal was again fortuitous as Makandwire allowed the ball to slip out from his chest and back into the box for Richard Ramirez to slide into the corner of the goal. After the match Fletcher Goodwin refused to blame his keeper for the defeat

“Everybody has an off day once in a while. Unfortunately Jerome had one the same day the rest of the team was off. Hopefully this is just a one off and he’ll be back to his best next week in the Trofeo Royal.”

Ridgemont Town 1 – 2 Athletic Khaldoon
The home fans were treated to a disappointing defeat to Athletic Khaldoon. The defeat sees the slip two places in the league and leap-frogged by Athletic.
Athletic’s young striker Ludovig Valeny opened the scoring just before half time with a diving header at the back post. Just after the break Athletic doubled their lead via a Ruud Seedorf freekick. Seedorf’s effort cleared the wall before dipping perfectly just under the crossbar. Ridgemont’s Candelarian striker Tom Smith pulled the team back into the game after coming on as a substitute. That goal was the forwards 11th after making appearances off the bench. Ridgemont continued to attack but were unable to find an equalizer thanks to the superb reactions of Brad Johnson in the Athletic goal.

BREAKING NEWS: Almondvale Football Club have released a statement this afternoon announcing the sacking of coach Fletcher Goodwin. The under fire coach has failed to deliver any semblance of the success of previous seasons and the board believes it is time for a change in direction.
The team currently find themselves 3 points above the relegation scrap and only 8 points above bottom team Belle-Isle on Sea.
Questions now surround Almondvale as to who will take over as coach at the club. Former Skyte City and international Futsal team manager Daryl Ferguson is favorite, however the list also includes former Royal Khaldoon manager Keith Fletcher who is currently without a club and former Barbossa coach Alfonse Marescha who successfully prevented the relegation of Barbossa in Una Serie 1.

Goodwin had built a good reputation at Almondvale having lead the team to progressively higher finishes in the league whilst working with a minimal amount of funds, however the form of the team this season has reflected poorly on the manager and the board has decided to try kick start the remainder of the season under a new coach.

Goodwin commented

“I’m not entirely surprised that the board has come to this decision. I am disappointed at having to leave the club, we have had three great seasons and even played some international football. But I guess it is time for a change following recent results, I just hope whoever takes over from me is prepared to work on a shoestring budget.”

A spokesman for Almondvale stated
“We wish Mr. Goodwin all the success in the World and thank him for his effort during his time at Almondvale.”

When asked about a replacement the spokesperson responded

“The club is following a number of possible avenues and hopes to have a new man in charge in the next 10 days or so.”

So, season number six it is in Somewhereistonia (or so we are told). Atlantas look to have temporarily ended their expensive enpenditure. Qasarian Sparta and everyone else appear to be doing very little exchange wise either, it's almost as though the person behind the teams has been busy doing other things, not that that is possible.

So how did it all go?

Atlantas to do the double! Surprise? Only as far as a double is unlikely, the team definitely have the strength to do this, having once again failed to qualify for the TQCC proper. Atlantas managed to win the title with two games to go, they then lost the last two games in a way which must have felt mocking to the Dinamo team. Qasarian Sparta and Metalurgs were off the pace for the title, but once again easily made their way into the top four, and the Globe Cup with that. Kalev Talla surprisingly find themselves in fifth place and in the last Globe Cup place after a great season under new management.

Everyone else finished in surprisingly unsurprising positions in the table, in all honsety, other than the precise positions, this was quite a boring season. Everything just went according to plan, as it were. Well, maybe Atlantas can win the TQCC and continue with the plan. Somehow that seems doubtful. Would be interesting though.

Collegiate Sporting Alliance, 1776 season

(really, really late again. I sense a pattern here.)

Since no conference champion finished outside the top sixteen in the rankings this year, determining the playoff competitors is simple — the top sixteen are in.

Also, tiebreakers are now only applied when they actually matter — either to decide the conference title, or if it decides whether or not a top-16 ranked team would finish in the bottom half of its conference and thus be ineligible for the postseason (not bloody likely).

What with Olympics and World Cup qualifiers going on it seems an awfully long time since we last checked in on the domestic front so let’s take an arbitrary point in the season, say 22 games in, and take a peek.

They haven’t had it quite their own way in the past few seasons but the big three have been trying to put that right this year, occupying, as they do, the top three spots in the SuperLiga. For now at least. Sporting San Marquez are looking the team to beat at the moment with their attacking triumvirate of Diego Lara, Agapito López Santos and Marcinho, deployed behind lone striker Roberto Ordóñez, causing the opposition all kinds of trouble. Ciudad Soluca under Hane Davis finally look to be putting up a title challenge again but seven defeats in twenty two will worry the boss slightly. As will the overreliance on the ‘hoof it up to big Zac Adekunde’ tactic. Reigning champions El Nacional lurk with intent, four points behind the leaders. A position boss Otto van Belhamel won’t complain about too loudly having been faced with the distractions of losing players to international duty, TakilQuip Champions Cup commitments and the loss of key midfielder Rafael Balbo, who surprisingly move to Queer Poco el Mono Ara.

A glance at the league table also highlights a situation that has been coming more and more apparent. Once a two horse race, at best, the Sargossan top flight is becoming increasingly competitive. The loss of so many of the league’s top performers to the likes of the CMSC, D-League and Cafundéu First Division has levelled the playing field dramatically. Now five, or maybe even seven, sides are in with a shout of the title while further down the league a mere five points separates sixth place from seventeenth. Creating a more competitive, exciting and popular competition. There are those that argue that it also signals a dilution in quality but the improving performances of Sargossan sides in international cup competitions suggests otherwise.

Current SuperLiga Standings
1: Sp. San Marquez 22 11 7 4 33 21 12 40 (TQCC)
2: Ciudad Soluca 22 11 4 7 24 21 3 37 (TQCC)

Following national coach Rob Kietecs’ announcement that he intends to retire should Sargossa reach the World Cup finals, which they currently look good to do, media attention has been dragged away from the players for a change, instead focusing it firmly on the men in the dugouts. It’s believed the FFS are looking to appoint a Sargossan to the position should Nethertopian Kietecs step down, with Dínamo Maturín and Olympic coach José Marín, Under-21 boss Juan Manuel Del Rios, El din Marbles’ Félix Barreto and Israel Quintana of Deportivo Cordova all mentioned in dispatches. But with the top three domestic sides all coached by foreigners another non-native in the post cannot be ruled out.

Copa Sargossa

North Eastern Rushmore’s premier cup competition has just completed it’s quarter final stage, a round that threw up a particularly mouth-watering clash. Arch rivals Ciudad and El Nacional went head to head for the third and fourth times this season and once again it was the boys from the capitol he came away with the honours. After a win at the ediraf and a draw in Goza in the league Hane Davis’ side were confident heading into the first leg in Soluca and duly won the game courtesy of a Zachary Adekunde header. A week later the big Candelariasian was at it again with a first half brace at the Independiente. Francisco Fontova managed a consolation but El Nacional went out 3 – 1 on aggregate.

The prospect of a league and cup double is still very much on for José Felipe Cassumba Domingos and Sporting. The Larissan giants were relatively comfortable 2 – 1 winners home and away over Alianza Jucaro. Elsewhere there loomed the prospect of Segunda Liga representation in the last four for the first time since we don’t know when following Sportivo Maturín’s home 1 – 0 over Juventudé. But the SuperLiga side showed their quality in the second leg with a 3 – 0 victory. And S.C. Goza’s miserable season continued when they lost 3 – 1 away at Moruga S.C. to exit the competition 4 – 3 on aggregate.

Week 43, The Last Stretch

Valengren Kickers 2 – 1 BOS
Valengren Kickers confirmed their Una Serie status and condemned Belle-Isle on Sea to an immediate return to League I with a display of sheer grit.
The Kickers came out guns blazing in front of the home fans and took the lead in the tenth minute when Jurgen Lahm out jumped everyone in the box to power his header home. Valengren continued to push and Belle-Isle’s relegation seemed imminent as the team failed to string any possession together.
The Kickers doubled their lead 20 minutes later when Lahm’s pace took him beyond Conrad Magull and straight in on goal, the forward then slid the ball underneath the advancing goalkeeper and put Valengren clearly in the driving seat.
The Belle-Isle team collapsed under the pressure and their impending doom and failed to rally. They did however pull back a late consolation goal, which offered little consolation as they were headed back down, when Lester Burnidge directed the ball toward goal off his shin following a sloppy Valengren clearance.

After the game Belle-Isle manager Gavin Dickinson stated

“I, like everyone else, am disappointed at being relegated. However, I expect to be in charge next season and will be looking to guide the team straight back.”

In comparison Ray Hodgson commented

“Today’s result is a massive relief, we can now try get a decent result in our final fixture against Athletic Khaldoon and begin restructuring for next season.”

However the manager’s plans for reconstruction may soon be halted as rumors are circulating he is set to be another manager facing the chop. Since the inception of the Una Serie five coaches have been sacked and it is highly likely Hodgson will be the sixth.

Royal Khaldoon 1 – 1 Athletic Khaldoon
Champions Royal Khaldoon collected another point as they continue to break the accumulated points total since confirming the league title just 2 weeks ago. Athletic however will be thankful for the point as it keeps them firmly embroiled in the battle over mid-table position. The teams in 5th and 9th could all still see changes in the final week and any point leading up to the finale is needed.
Athletic took a surprise lead in first half extra time when Emile Karembeu seized upon a short back pass and smashed home beyond the Royal keeper.
Their lead however was soon nullified when Karbul Bak played Omid Rustu through on goal for the homegrown forward to see his shot tamely pushed away by Brad Johnson. Bak pounced on the loose ball and scored the equalizer.
The game then proceeded to become a stalemate with neither side taking the initiative and failing to make a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Royal captain Tomasz Poborsky gushed after the game

“This is the best season yet in Una Serie, but were not done yet, we’re looking to do the double then bring in a few more players and dominate even more so next year.

Ridgemont Town 2 – 2 Pythons
Pythons saw their league title slip further away as Ridgemont came from behind to secure their globe cup position next season.
Frederico got the visitors on their way with a goal in the 26th minute when he managed to get on the end of a Dean Bowyer pass and knock the ball over the oncoming keeper. Pythons doubled their lead before the break as Enrico Dossena went down in the box under an Ahmed Khan challenge. Dossena brushed himself down and took the penalty himself and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-0.
Midfielder Frank Le Tissier grabbed a lifeline for Ridgemont when his looping cross swerved in the air and found its way into the Pythons goal.
Supersub Tom Smith came off the bench to score his 17th of the campaign for Ridgemont and secure their globe cup spot with a game to go. After the game Le Tissier commented

“It’s great to be heading into another successive international club competition. And who knows, maybe next year we can make the group stages.”

Augustus 1 – 3 Almondvale
Almondvale romped to an away victory over Augustus and look to be putting the mediocrity of the current season behind them with a late flurry.
First half goals from Adrian Belmont and Ulli White were added to mid way through the second half with a 40 yard Piledriver from Nethertopian Klaas Breinburg.
Augustus did however grab a late consolation goal when Andrea Di Vaio became the lucky recipient of a poor punched clearance from a corner and tapped into an empty net.

Salaga F.C 0 – 2 Skyte City
Neil Howzer looked to finalize his revamp of Skyte as they fight for a Globe Cup spot until the final day of the season. Overcoming Salaga in fixture 43 went a long way to aiding this as Augustus slipped up at home to Almondvale.
Goals from James Phillips and Rafael Balbo were enough to take all three points and Howzer said after the performance

“Following the disastrous nature of last season Globe Cup qualification will go a long way to erasing those memories. We have a one final chance next week and will need to beat Pythons, who will be smarting after losing the championship.”

Jonastown United 0 – 0 Real Minanda
J-Town and Minanda played out a scoreless draw as both teams look toward the conclusion of what can be considered a successful season with both teams comfortably avoiding relegation and even at one stage appearing to be International Club Competition qualification challengers.
Ricky Ortega will be disappointed his team didn’t snatch all three points in the dying moments as Carlos Borges scuffed a golden opportunity to score and have his effort trickle weakly out for a goal kick. After the game Minanda coach Hector Gonzales congratulated his side on a decent performance this season as the team further cement their position in the league and widen the gulf between the teams in the mid-table positions and those battling for survival.

“It’s been a good year and I can’t complain about the effort the lads have put in, they’ve been great this year and we still have another game we can get points from next week.”

International University Challenge Championship 20
presented by Nakiti Corporation

Welcome to the milestone twentieth edition of the IUCC, the premier tournament for university football teams around the multiverse.

The number of entrants declined this time, with only nineteen institutions electing to enter the competition. As convenient as it would have been to reach the much nicer number of twenty by inviting another entrant from defending champion nation Dancougar, the IUCC organizing committee has been explicitly forbidden from doing so this time. So nineteen the number shall remain, and we'll work through it.

As the IUCC charter stipulates that the group stage must involve 16, 20, or 24 teams, we will obviously be aiming for 16 this time around. Therefore, there will be a preliminary round involving the six lowest-ranked teams — well, almost. We are continuing with the stipulation that every participating nation must have at least one automatic qualifier. But aside from that, it's the bottom six. In addition, we shall ensure that if a nation has two teams in the preliminary stage, they will not face each other.

The draw for the preliminary round is as follows:

St. Mark's College, Mort Park [WZI] – Woodruff Culinary Institute [ASA]
Strawberry Fields University [TAE] – Paruvia Institute of Technology [ASA]
Moorcroft University [WZI] – Reynea Area Community College [TAE]

The preliminary round will be two-legged, with the lower-ranked team (shown at left above) playing the first leg at home.

Schedule
Preliminary round — Monday 5 October
Group stage — Tuesday 6 October
Knockout rounds — Wednesday 7 October
