All government proceedings are conducted in Valdean (the national language - sort of a blend of English, Czech, and Turkish). About half of the population (64%, to be exact) uses this same language with slight variations, such as the complete lack of case markers and a tendency to omit or shorten vowels. The alveolar lateral approximant becomes a voiced alveolar lateral fricative.

The rest of the population uses Valdean Creole, which is 99% mutually intelligible with Basic.

Valdean is written with the Cyrillic alphabet. The following is the First Article of the Valdean Constitution, a transliteration, and a literal translation.

*'The necessities of life' is a purely Valdean concept, which is essentially the annual quota of food, water, electricity, shelter, clothing, etc. that is given to each person according to their needs by the Valdean government, for free.

**This is set apart because spoken Valdean has something known as an emphasis stop. This is a phenomenon in which, rather than raising one's voice, one waits for up to three seconds with a hand raised before making a particularly emphatical statement. Written Valdean does not distinguish between this and the full stop ( the '.' symbol).

[Euskirribakondara]

Since the establishment of the new Kingdom of Euskirribakondara (July 28, 2011), a new Constitution governs its territory. In this Constitution there is an article that says:

Every language that is natively spoken by more than 1% of the Euskirribakondarian population shall be made official in its region. Therefore, it shall be used by the Monarchy throughout ALL the territory in its documents and papers. Nevertheless, the languages that shall be: always and everywhere in the vast territory of Euskirribakondara, are Euskal and Aranes, due to its large number of speakers and its quality of lingua franca.

The Constitution also recognizes the wide language diversity of Euskirribakondara and protects it. The OFFICIAL languages of this nation are:

* Euskal Related to the Basque. It's the most spoken language in Euskirribakondara, and it is written with a variation of the Latin alphabet; that is always read the same way. It has a simple 5-vocal system.
* Aranes A romance language, it is highly related to Catalan, Portuguese, Spanish and French. It has a quite complex ortography, but can be spoken very fast.
* Armenian The official language of all Armenians. It has its own alphabet (RL language)
* Sirbadian Slavic language spoken in the west of Euskirribakondara. It is written on a variation of the Cyrillic alphabet.
* Euskal Arabic It is the same RL arabic writting system, but it is read differently.
* Lillamut A Scandinavian language that is related to Norwegian and Swedish. It is written with the Latin alphabet.

Pottslandians have a tongue known as "Native Pottslandian", a rather interesting language that sounds much unlike any other language. The languages believed to be anywhere close to Pottslandian range from Germanic to Vietnamese. This is owning to the fact that Pottslandians separated themselves from the rest of the world unwittingly 10,000 years ago and only during the advent of long, sustained ocean travel did they meet up with anyone else.

However (as I posted in my factbook), Pottslandians are ever curious, especially about other cultures and languages. Spanish is often spoken here as Central and South Americans with the right means often opt to go to Pottslande, and Gaelic is frequently spoken as a few Irish sailors chose Pottslande as their place of respite instead. As a result of both the Pottslandian cultural awareness and a high migration rate into Pottslande, a sort of informal motto has sprung up, "if you've stepped on our soil, we'll learn how to discuss philosophy with your grandmother!"
