ODI World Cup I - Rosters/RP/Scores Thread

Postby North Chicanan » Fri Sep 09, 2011 8:49 am

Image

Welcome to the first One Days World Cup. This cricket championship will be held in beautiful North Chicanan and is officially hosted by the Northern Cricket Club.

The sites are listed below, and each group will be based at one grounds for the opening round. The top two from each group advance to the second group stage, with four sites hosting action. The top two will then advance to the Super 8 round (although for the essence of not having teams playing another seven matches it will be broken into two groups) with the top teams in each group advancing to the semifinals.

As this is not a Test event, teams may play in uniforms that actually have color in them and sponsors listed, although we ask sponsor logos to be kept along the sleeves only.

Teams are to be eleven players, with an additional seven allowed as reserve. When posting roster, you may include batting side, your wicket keeper and if they are typically a batsman or a bowler (to help with rps). As stated before, teams with rosters will receive a permanent point in terms of role play, while other role plays will be adjusted as the tournament continues.

Also include any other notes for the sake of rp. Since it's not a traditional rp event, it's a bit harder to borrow rp permissions but just let everyone know if there is specifics you want with how the runs are accumulated.

Now, onto the Groups! Besides the hosts being placed in Group A, all teams were randomly sorted into groups.

Regarding RPing, I am pretty laid back but if you are planning something big, TG me first
There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

IN'T CORRIDOR (UPA) — Orthoplex opening bat Jeff Pellerin has been named captain of the 18-person party set for North Chicanan, representing Uncertainty at the Cricket World Cup. Rumours of a return from former legends, 38 year old opener Leo Deasey and 41 year old allrounder Rohit Nagarkar, were quashed as there were no places for them, but other big names, including wicketkeeper batsman Tom Kyngdon, left arm spinning allrounder Jack Brader, and hard hitting pace bowler Lahiru Jayasinghe, have been included. The team have been draw in Group B, based in York and playing their matches at City Park, and will start off with an encounter with Khabarovsk Krai. They will also play Kjoman Isles, and the experienced Akbarabadi side.

The Kytler Peninsulae National Cricket Team

Team details

The Kytlerian team play in dark green kits, with yellow sleeves; the country name on the front, and the player name and number on the back, will also be in yellow. (If colours clash, the team will play in a change kit of pale yellow with green trim and text.) One sleeve will bear the logo for "Splash!", a Kytlerian brand of soft drink.

The 50-over game is not extensively played in The Kytler Peninsulae; the only permanent domestic competitions are a first-class four-day league and a T20 cup, although 50-over friendlies are organised from time to time. As such, Kytlerian players often specialise in either T20 or four-day matches, although players experienced in both have been favoured for this 50-over team.

While the country has a relatively diverse population as a whole, cricket's popularity is heavily concentrated in Anglo-Saxon communities. They contribute almost the entirety of the 18-man squad, with the lone exception being of Dutch origin.

(Averages are from the last two domestic seasons, and are quoted as a guide for those compiling scores. In particular, the strike rates and economy rates from T20 are a guide to how aggressive or otherwise the players are. Obviously, their figures in the international arena will tend to be comparatively worse than their domestic figures.)

Starting lineups will be announced before each game - the squad may be rotated at any time due to injury, loss of form, or attempts to adapt to the opposition. 1-11 are the expected starting XI, but this could change.

RP requests

The only thing I ask of you is that you respect the player characteristics in the squad list above. For instance, Carl Thompson's low strike rate in T20 shows that he is a defensive batsman, so don't have him out trying to slog-sweep the bowler out of the ground, but do have him occupying the crease for a while patiently waiting for a bad ball if you like. Vice versa for Robert Arnold.

Other than that, go knock yourself out. Proverbially speaking.
Out of international isolation and... winning things? Huh?

Host: World Lacrosse Championship 13, Baptism of Iron X, 7th World Championships of Babbage Rules Football, and Games of the IX Olympiad.

Won: World Lacrosse Championship 13, Elephant Chess Cup 7, and Memorial Cup. Also top of the medals table at the Games of the IX Olympiad (24 gold, 63 total medals).
World Lacrosse Championship 12 and World Bowl 47 quarter-finalists, World Bowl XV and World Baseball Classic 20 octo-finalists
28 medals, 10 gold, at Games of the VI Olympiad (13th in medal table)
7 medals, 5 gold, at VII Olympic Winter Games (7th in medal table)
26 medals, 10 gold, at Games of the VIII Olympiad (9th in medal table)

Mossulia go into the world cup as the second greatest team here (behind number ones Genyria). Just look at the players they have, Carlos Novello has a really fast strike rate and is improving on the staying in part. Meanwhile Grant and Berring have redicoulously high batting averages and will do damage to any defence. Amanda Wong and Borris England also are very strong openning fast bowlers and took many a batsmans wickets over the last season. Penny Young meanwhile is a new spinner on the team and has proven herself in several pre-cup tests against Bonjolia and the Isla de Grande Roccas (Island of big rocks) who aren't quite test material yet. Mossulia are also lucky to have two strong all rounder who are often make some decent runs and also take down a few wickets sometimes.

Mossulia have been drawn into a group with the hosts North Chicanan who are a good side. We have also have Colmark who are a half decent test side will pose a threat when it comes to a game against them. But the other team are now Mossulian cricket rivals, Krytenia. In all of our tests against them we drew (although we had a chance at winning the last test, but rain delayed play) so we now need to see who is the better team. Anywa, this should be an interesting cup for the Mossulian side.

The BCB is delighted to send the following squad to North Chicanan. It will be captained by the Bruynese president's youngest brother, Zain de Rívas.

Name Age	Bat	Bowl
Herman Butcher 34 LHB -
John Frege 28 RHB -
Manuel Watson 28 RHB RM (part-timer)
Zain de Rívas * 24 RHB -
Lysander Iguadala 25 RHB -
Albie Magnus 36 LHB RM/OB/LB
Charon de Vincy † 20 RHB -
Jonathan Antequera 23 RHB RMF
Alan Rabin 29 RHB LB
Thomas Hazlitt 26 LHB LFM
Milton Kariba 20 RHB RF

Gautier de Sauveterre 24 RHB -
Haidar Tarkani † 21 LHB -
Amato Saldatura 22 RHB RFM
Saul Sterne 29 RHB OB

Herman Butcher, LHB
Large and strong, Butcher's lack of footwork and atavistic instinct to pummel the ball leave him especially susceptible to getting out caught. Despite a dislike for spinners, he relishes taking on the fastest of bowlers and can be extremely destructive.

John Frege, RHB
The antithesis of his partner, Frege is highly technical and correct. He has lots of concentration and is fiercely protective of his wicket. The upshot is an excruciatingly slow scoring rate. A deep thinker, the diminutive Frege is at best absent-minded in the outfield.

Manuel Watson, RHB, occasional RM
The side's best batsman. An overbearing narcissist, he possesses all the savagery of Butcher, but employs it better; he has the technical skill of Frege but is far less dour. Watson can also turn his arm over, is a handy close-in fielder and looks to sledge opponents caustically.

Zain de Rivas *, RHB

Appointing the president's youngest brother as captain sparked acrimony, but the squad - even Watson - now respects him. Thoughtful and self-effacing, de Rivas is a batsman of grace, possessing fluid wrists and enterprising footwork. A joy to watch beyond the nervous starts.

Lysander Iguadala, RHB
A free-spirited batsman, Iguadala oozes unorthodoxy. He loves nothing more than to innovate and get under the bowler's skin. The carefree approach can win games but equally makes him easy prey for failure. An electric fielder at point.

Albie Magnus, LHB, RM/OB/LB
A true all-rounder. As a batsman, he is ideal foil for the flamboyant middle order - gritty and watchful but capable of acceleration and marshalling the tail. His bowling, though, makes him indispensable: offies, leggies, flippers, and even medium pace if needed. Liability in the field.

Charon de Vincy †, RHB

In an age of wicketkeeper-batsmen, de Vincy is an aberration. He lacks in batting ability, which rather disrupts the side's balance. However, in the 50-over game, this shouldn't matter too much. Besides, his keeping - which really is excellent - more than atones for it.

Jonathan Antequera, RHB, RMF

What Antequera lacks in pace, he possesses in determination. That is not condescension; armed with a prodigious ability to swing the ball, Antequera will bowl and bowl and bowl. He can bat a little bit too - so much so that a case has been made for promoting him above de Vincy.

Alan Rabin, RHB, LB
On his day, this attacking leg-spinner can deceive anybody; he has all the tricks of the trade, including a large repertoire of deliveries and a smart bowling mind. His batting is just a case of "see ball, hit ball" (though he would beg to differ) and crumbles under most scrutiny.

Thomas Hazlitt, LHB, LFM
Hazlitt is a highly incisive quick whose skills and consistency are backed by an astute cricketing mind. As vice-captain and the leader of the attack, he has a lot of responsibility. In the outfield he can cover ground quickly and has a bullet throw, but don't expect him to do much with bat in hand.

Milton Kariba, RHB, RF
Including young Kariba is a gamble. The intimidating paceman is of a rare kind indeed, having been clocked at a shade over 97mph. However, he can be wildly inaccurate and leak runs, and happens to be a bunny with the bat.

Gautier de Sauveterre, RHB
Another classy batsman who can slot in anywhere. May well get lucky if Frege proves too pedestrian.

Haidar Tarkani †, LHB
Not a natural keeper - having started out as a batsman - but should deputise well for de Vincy if needed.

Amato Saldatura, RHB, RFM

Tall and muscular swing bowler capable of generating steepling bounce, but has a fragile temperament that could impede performance.

Saul Sterne, RHB, OB
The reserve spin option, Sterne is a bowler who looks to contain. A competent number eight too.

Try to take note of the information contained inside the spoiler when roleplaying, if you could.

Starblaydi Cricket Federation

Cricket is generally played in Starblaydia's provinces that used to be the nation of Nova Britannicus. As such, almost every single one of the players comes from one of the six main Britannican sides, who organise a Provincial Championship each year. Cricket is a purely amateur game in Starblaydia though, like any sport, they want to win just as much as their professional colleagues from other sports.

The Kjoman Isles XI comes into this tournament not looking to wow with sheer amountds of flashy showboating plays, but intend to show up and play a traditional style of effective cricket that will entertain and challenge all of their opponents. The whole 18 man squad, bar 1 player, come from the North-west King's City, where Cricket is the majority played sport. The squad is as follows, in batting order:
    Stewart Lynn, Batsman
    Toby Frasier, Batsman
    Chance Peak, All Rounder
    Lawrie Clacher, Batsman (C)
    Jack Collins, Wicket Keeper
    Darius Thurston, All Rounder
    Michael Coombs, Bowler
    Jackson Milburne, All Rounder (VC)
    Quin Ibbott, Bowler
    Kenton Mackenzie, Bowler
    Frank Davis, Bowler

    Reserves:
    Brandon Gideon, Batsman
    Leland Ferdinand, Batsman
    Sam Marley, Wicket Keeper
    Chad Middleton, Batsman
    Barry Coleman, Bowler
    Dennis Russell, All Rounder
    Patrick Leach, Bowler

    Coaching staff:
    Head Coach: Boyce Speight
    Batting Coach: Jarvis Kelly
    Bowling Coach: Colin Forrest
    Fielding Coach: Dustin Fletcher
Trainers: Walter Balfour, Rick Thorburn, Edward Adamson
    Manager: Flynn Snider

Strip (OOC: I didn't have time to make an actual picture, sorry.):
The strip consists of a dark red primary colour, with a watermarked image of Ma'a, the traditional image of native Kjoman religion and the nation's coat of arms, in light grey on the front. As with all Kjoman sports, the word 'Fynneunc' is written across the lower back, in light grey. This word means 'Warriors' in traditional Kjoman language, known as Albasian. If needed the side has an alternative strip, which is the same design, simply swapping the dark red and light grey. The side wears a dark red cap when fielding, with the Kjoman Cricket Board's logo emblazoned on the front.

In contrast to Kjoman Isles, Genyria comes into this tournament exactly looking to wow with sheer amounts of flashy showboating players, deciding in fact to field the same side as was sent to the Test competition, since, in Genyria, most players are equally trained in both the one-day and Test disciplines. This being said, most commentators predict this side will not perform so well here as in the Test tournament.

The Report by Kalyana Bhattacharya

Uncertainty 278 for 7 (Kyngdon 91, Bradshaw 3-37) beat Khabarovsk Krai 215 (van Daal 65, Zoeteweij 58, Priyankara 4-39) by 63 runs

New to world cricket and facing an unknown opponent, the Uncertain national cricket team wanted to at least avoid embarrassment in their opening encounter of the Cricket World Cup, and preferably start off with a win; they accomplished both aims in comprehensive fashion with a 63 run win over Khabarovsk Krai at City Park, York. Tom Kyngdon brought up a fluent maiden international half century in the course of a 93 run 3rd wicket stand with Saeed Malik, before allrounder Ryan Matthews smashed 33 off 22 balls to stave off a late innings collapse. The bowlers then maintained tight lines that forced up the run rate for the chasing team, who lost a flurry of cheap wickets to slide from 96-1 to 215 all out.

The day/night match was the second game to take place at City Park, where Akbarabad had earlier lost to Kjoman Isles's self-proclaimed "tradtional" cricketers by five wickets, and selection was a hotly debated topic ahead of the opener as the team set out on an unknown wicket. In the event, the pitch proved to have few surprises in store, being a low, slow burner that offered some turn but little bounce. Young legspinner Janaka Priyankara was preferred to offspinner James Blind, and there was no place for pace bowlers Ben Smits or Muhammad Zufar Hussain as captain Jeff Pellerin packed his lower order with allrounders.

Despite the formidable domestic averages of the Khabarovsk Krai XI they faced, Uncertainty got off to a brisk start, with Pellerin and allrounder Jay Thomas, one of the most exciting prospects to have emerged on the recent domestic scene, passed fifty for the first wicket inside 46 balls. Thomas mowed a six over midwicket as he went at a run a ball for his 24, but then fell caught behind as opposing captain Aran van Someren bent an outswinger across him. Pellerin, who claimed a more sedately paced 34 off 54, looked good for a fifty before chopping on to give Ethan Bradshaw, the legspinner whose bowling was the high point of Khabarovsk Krai's performance in the field, the first of his three wickets.

Kyngdon and Malik then combined for an authoritative partnership of 93 from 19 overs. Bradshaw and his spin partner Bailey Farrar were economical, with just 72 runs from their 20 middle innings overs, but the two batsmen milked enough singles to keep the scoreboard ticking; despite hitting only two fours - one of them a slightly fortuitous drop that bumbled over the line as it spilled from the fielder's grasp - Malik finished with 42 from 52 before trying to up the tempo in the batting powerplay and skying a simple chance to Bradshaw.

Kyngdon by contrast hit eight boundaries, including a composed slog sweep for six that pushed Nico Leduca's economy rate over a run a ball. Driving with ease, clipping anything straight off his hips, and using his feet against the offpace bowling, he showed the technique and endurance that lead many to believe he will inherit the mantle of captaincy once Pellerin retires, but also encountered a problem that has dogged his domestic career, by failing to convert his score into a hundred as a Bradshaw legbreak got past his attempted sweep to bowl him on 91.

The biggest concern for Uncertainty coming into the World Cup has been their middle order, and neither Sam Booth nor Connor Murphy did much to allay those fears, both falling cheaply to open up the tail, but Ryan Matthews asserted his genuine allround credentials with a feisty cameo that included a swivel pull for four through a packed legside field, and a clubbed six over long on in the final over. He ran out Jack Brader on the final ball of the innings, but by then 278 looked a good return.

In response, Uncertainty got an ideal start when Lahiru Jayasinghe had Marek van Rijswijk smartly caught by Kyngdon, but Hanno Zoeteweij and Laud van Daal then settled in for a big partnership. They frustrated the Uncertain bowlers, but failed to cash in on some attacking field placings as Pellerin risked close catchers instead of runstoppers in search of the key wicket, and it took them 20 overs to reach 96, leaving the batters to follow an increasingly formidable task as the run rate spiralled.

The introduction of Jack Brader - the seventh bowler Pellerin employed - snapped the stand as he trapped Zoeteweij LBW for 58, and thereafter van Daal, who went on to top score with 65, slogging three sixes off the spinners, was unable to find another partner with whom he could develop some momentum.

Janaka Priyankara took four wickets and Jayasinghe another two to justify their selections ahead of Blind and Hussain, and when Jayasinghe held van Daal off John Andrews, trying for a fourth six but finding only long off, the rate had moved to over 10 an over with just three wickets remaining. Tarek Beijersbergen and van Someren came up with a quickfire partnership of 40 off 43 but even that was not enough, and Priyankara completed his four-for with three wickets in 11 balls to close out the contest an over ahead of time.

Tougher tests may well lie in store for Pellerin and Kyngdon, however; they now face Kjoman Isles, fellow opening day victors, and then the Akbarabad side that competed in the Global Cricket Federation's Test Championship.

Kaumban ODI Roster:

Batting Order:

Terrence Mtwetwe, Captain, powerfully built paratrooper, not much craft but the clout is there
George Nzou, Vice-Captain, strong on the offside but leaves a lot alone on the on
Isaac Manyaro, The craftsman, will take poor bowling apart
Timothy Vickers, Blocker, never loses his wicket cheaply but rarely posts a large total
Peter Walls, Part time spinner, useful batsman
Ronald Daly, Medium Pacer, reliable with the bat
Desmond Muzerowa, Wickie, solid behind the stumps and not too shabby in front
Joshua Muguta, Trundler, effective but unimaginitive
James Tabonda, Fast man, likes to aim at the batsman's head
Laurence Tarrson, Off-Spinner, useful for slowing an innings
Andrew Barnes, Quickie, wild but usually effecient enough to warrant selection

Reserves:
Peter Keppers, Batsman stand in
George Alnwick, Substitute Wickie, can also bowl medium pace
Brian Lane, Trundler
Jerry Standing, Fast/Medium competes with Barnes for a place
Jack Halford, Batsman, good short fielder
Alphonse Renard, Excellent fielding but batting leaves a lot to be desired
James Butts, Old man of the team at 46 useful for experience

Kit: Green sleeves, trousers and helmets/caps and white chest. No sponser.

The Kalumban team consists entirely of amateurs due to there not being a proffesional cricket league in Kalumba. This is, however, not due to the sport's unpopularity but due to the security issues surrounding Kalumba. Terrorist attacks are common and target large sporting events, so the teams are kept amateur except on the international stage.

The Herald

Report by Wrex Tarr

167-7 170-9 (28.1 O)
Kalumba are off to a good start in the One Day Cricket World Cup, with a win against Cyborg Holland. In a thrilling contest 16 wickets fell and Kalumba came out with a close victory. Cyborg Holland won the toss and chose to bat first on what appeared to be a good batting surface at Hobart Athletic Park, but this was a very much false illusion. But it had taken in both teams as captain Terry Mtwetwe said "I would have gone in too bat and was very worried when we lost the toss, but in the end it looks like we escaped a dodgy pitch."

CH went out to bat and piled on the runs in the first five overs reaching 52 without loss, but then the pitch started to crumble rapidly and Laurence Tarrson took the first wicket, clean bowling Landzzat for 31. But new man van Horn quickly played himself in and CH reached 103-1 and looked to be on course for a decent score until an inspired spell from Tarrson who talk three wickets in tow overs for no runs. With van Horn, Vellen and Liebnitzberg out and CH rocking at 107-4 Kalumba scented blood in the water and our boys went on the attack. Tabonda contributed the wickets of van der Berg and SMit in a three over burst which also included a nasty blow to the head for Morgan. This left CH at 146-6 with 5 overs left and then Tarrson took his fifth wicket claiming the still dazed looking Morgan for 79. Eventually they finished on 167 for 7 after all fifty overs.

This did not look a formidable target and Kalumba started brightly with both Mtwetwe and Nzou playing some big stroke including a pair of sixes in the second over from Nzou. After just 3 overs Kalumba had 58 runs on the board but then the rot began to show. Hokk took a hatrick removing Mtwetwe, Manyaro and Vickers and in the next over Nzou and Walls fell. Kalumba now sat on 64-5 after 5 overs and the game looked lost. But then up stepped Muzerowa and Daly who built a solid fifty partnership over the next five overs and Kalumba began to look solid. Daly fell but Muzerowa kept goin and reached 71 before Hokk bowled him. On the way Muguta also fell to the bowling of Mett. This left Kalumba on 161-8 after 25 overs. The game was in the balance as Kalumba's tail-enders toook on the cream of Cyborg Holland's bowling attack and Mett took Tarrson with the first ball of the 26th over and the game seemed to swing away from Kalumba, but last man Barnes hoiked a six off the next ball and it was very much in the balance. And despite a run-out chance refered to the third umpire Kalumba held on to win the game.

Both sides played brilliantly and poorly and the game could have gone either way. Thankfully our bowlers inate ability to bowl maidens in the middle of an innings took the wind out of the Cyborg Holland sails and despite many scares and cheap wickets Kalumba held on to win an incredibly tight game.

Krytenia 278/4 (50 overs) - Mossulia 234/9 (50 overs)

Mossulia got off to an abysmal start against the Krytenan side this evening with a defeat of thirty-eight runs by their second greatest rivals Kryetenia. This was the first match in North Chicanan and in the other group game North Chicanan beat Colmark who have been marked down as a threat in the group.

The game didn't start too well with Page Morrison dropping a catch and Tabien Ice failing to take an edge. This would cost them dearly as the first two batsmen got to 101 before the first wicket fell. It was taken by Penny Young in her first big match on the team. This wicket was followed swiftly by another when Borris England bowled out the other Krytenan openner to make it 111/2. After that the Krytenans managed to regain their pace until Amanda Wong bowled & caught their number four out with a shorter ball. Another wicket was taken towards the end by Ice, but Krytenia still managed to make 278 runs at the end of the day.

Mossulia then went in to bat with Grant and Novello going in. They didn't even manage five balls before Grant was caught at the boundry with a slightly off hook shot, an odd shot for careful Grant to play. Jole came in, but was dismissed two overs later for only five runs. Berring came in and he and Novello managed to get a partnership going and both made 50's before Novello was dismissed by LBW. After that there wasn't much special in the batting order, although Tabien Ice did manage thirty runs before his dismisal. Berring however got seventy-four runs before he was dismissed by a great peace of off-spin. At the end Amanda WOng and Borris England found themselves holding out at the end before the last ball was bowled and Mossulia lost.

An abject Bruynese bowling performance saw Kernansquillec's batsmen rack up 287-2 from their allotted overs, on what seemed like a belter of a pitch. There was nothing in it for the seamers, which makes Thomas Hazlitt's economical figures all the more remarkable. He did nab one of the opposing openers early leg before, but Jonathan Antequera at the other end bowled too many loose ones. A lack of pace and a flat surface do not go well together. This prompted captain Zain de Rívas to introduce big quick Milton Kariba into the attack rather soon. The idea backfired as Kariba proceeded to spray the ball everywhere. There was some joy for him as he shot a 95mph yorker through the opposing number three's defences, but the nature of his performance meant that the irritated Manuel Watson had to bowl four overs. Magnus and Rabin appeared rather toothless. Such a bad bowling performance gives de Rívas plenty to think about.

Total: 221-7 (50 overs)

The batting fared little better in the end. Herman Butcher was trapped lbw first ball of the innings, and John Frege's tortured innings left Bruyn floundering at 22-2. Watson and the captain staged something of a counterattack with their 47-run partnership before the former was bowled. Once Lysander Iguadala holed out, de Rívas came into his own. He unfurled some lovely strokes, opening the face deftly and clipping away anything on his legs. Albie Magnus looked in good nick as well, but at the fall of his wicket, Bruyn were 123-5 off almost 36. de Vincy did not last long, but Antequera played an innings of some skill alongside his captain. de Rívas's last 44 runs came from 27 deliveries but the acceleration - wonderful as it was to see from the captain - came far too late. Bruyn finished on 221-7, losing by 67 runs.

'We were rather outclassed,' admitted a downcast de Rívas after the game, 'and there is a whole swarm of problems to address before we take to the field next... [my] innings is just a speck compared to the interests of the team. The priority now - the only priority - is the Kalumba match.'

ODI World Cup Group H match, Port Elizabeth:
Genyria 198-7 (50 overs) lost to The Kytler Peninsulae 265-8 (50 overs) by 67 runs

The Kytlerians have rapidly gained a reputation for upsetting the proverbial apple-cart in international sport. Eight consecutive victories in their first ever international tournament, in lacrosse? Ten gold medals on their Olympic debut? And now this? This was not just a victory in their international cricket debut - it was an astonishing 67-run destruction of Genyria, the world's top-ranked Test nation.

The Kytlerians won the toss and opted to bat on an unremarkable wicket that had a tinge of green at both ends. It was suggested by commentators that this could be a mistake, the breeze blowing through the Cold Harbor Cricket Grounds offering some help for the veteran medium-pacer Manius Sergius Quercus, but the forecast was for worsening conditions later on. The opening pair of Oliver Martin and Carl Thompson settled in patiently, not tempted into big shots in the opening powerplay, and put on 52 for the opening wicket before Martin edged to wicketkeeper Anthony Anselm.

Dennis Sand came in with the intention of picking up the run-rate, but did so all too briefly, hitting two consecutive boundaries off youthful spinner Nicolas Appleby before lobbing a straight drive to Sergius Quercus in the deep. Robert Arnold fell shortly after, clean bowled by a peach from Appleby, and when Steven Booth was trapped lbw by Sergius Quercus, the Kytlerians were in trouble at 87-4.

Thompson tied up one end effectively, though, and advanced to 50 off 82 balls with only two boundaries, before picking up the pace. Warren Hampstead was able to get in, unlike his fellow middle-order T20 specialists, and raced to his half-century off just 44 balls, including two huge sixes over midwicket in the same over. The pair put on 95 for the fifth wicket at a run a ball, making a mockery of the idea that the middle overs in an ODI innings are stodgy and dull, before Hampstead holed out to Appleby at long-off attempting to smash a Graeme Goshawk full toss over the ropes.

Matthew Barton, the last recognised Kytlerian batsman, offered a vital contribution thereafter, reining in his attacking instincts to ensure Thompson did not run out of partners - an odd role reversal of the earlier exchanges. Barton trudged to 19 from 36 balls before Sergis Quercus bowled him with a big inswinger that clipped the top of off-stump, but by then Thompson had claimed a superlative century, and he kept going, eventually caught by a diving catch from Anselm for 120. George Nairn edged to Anselm off the next delivery to give Sergius Quercus a five-for and put him on a hat-trick, but Keith Coulton kept out the hat-trick delivery.

Set 266 to win, Genyria made a promising start, veterans Gerard Avril and Ludo Griflett cruising along at a run a ball as they took full advantage of the powerplay overs. But as the cloud cover grew and the pitch deteriorated, the Kytlerians took full advantage of having two spinners - and two who had no excuse not to team up effectively, as they were brothers Warren and Chris Hampstead. Chris trapped Griflett lbw for 38, Warren did the same to Avril in the very next over, and then captain Tarquin Kettering was out shortly afterwards, edging to Sand at second slip. Three wicket maidens in four overs had sent the Genyrians from 78-0 after thirteen overs to 80-3 after seventeen, and the team were in shock. The Hampstead brothers both bowled all of their allocated ten overs in a single spell, their double team frustrating the Genyrians throughout; just 53 runs were scored off these 20 overs, and just as Goshawk and Moreaux were settled in, they were both trapped lbw in consecutive overs. At 131-5 with 17 overs to go, the Genyrians had a daunting task, but where one might have expected them to rise to the challenge, they instead faded away with a whimper, as precise seam bowling from economical T20 specialist Martin Wilkinson was supplemented by the unerring accuracy of Steven Booth. The two Stretton brothers were both caught late on, but the result was long sealed. A team that most expected to play with flamboyance and gusto had retreated badly in the face of an unheralded, but dangerous, Kytlerian attack. It was surely the performance of the tournament thus far, and a desperate Genyrian team were reduced to complaining about the lbw decisions, of which only Avril's was marginal.

Warren Hampstead was the man of the match, having steadied one middle-order collapse before instigating another. He said he "didn't fear Genyria, because we come here to play and to enjoy ourselves, whoever is against us." Sargossa, who play the Kytlerians next, may need to adopt a similar mental attitude, because on this evidence, this is a team to be feared.

The Fyreballz were fortunate to come away with a win in their first competition as a team. While the team had trouble earning wickets on the defensive side, the offense more than compensated.

84633842 opened the game in Kangaroo Park scoring 205 runs. While the Fyreballz were only able to pick up two wickets, bowled out by Montegue and June, the team played tight defense. With fresh legs and buoyed by their youth, the fast team scrambled around and managed to prevent a lot of possible runs. The bowlers seemed to befuddle 84633842 with their many different types of bowlers. As the overs ran on the team became less agressive for wickets and focused more on a low run rate.

After the first fifty overs were played, the Fyreballz took the field. From the start the Fyreballz attacked quickly with Johnson and Koenig scoring runs in bunches. Johnson alone had five sixes. After Koenig was caught out, McClint and formed a strong rapport. As the overs ran on the opponent bowlers seemed to tire and scoring increased. Montegue batted on and on from the twenty-fifth over on scoring consistently.

After the overs had finished, the Fyreballz had won by 95 runs. The young squad had won their first match and were more confident then ever. Captain Brian June summed it up in a post-match chat with reporters.

Brian June wrote:I was pleasantly surprised by the maturity of our team. While we have a few issues to work on, namely earning wickets and staying batting, our strength were tremendous. Prince and Jose had fantastic half centuries and Josh and Tim came close. Bowling-wise, our team was great. Olga was fantastic and really controlled her spin. De'shaun had great speed keeping the batters on their heels. Both bowlers should see more time next match. As we prepare to duel with Coffee Cakes, our focus must be precise. From what I've seen of the other Group Match, our upcoming opponents seem tough. I think we can beat them, but a lot of variables should be considered. We have to see.

Akbarabad lose in a one-day match for the first time ever.

(Akbarabad Press, AP): Akbarabad lost unbeaten streak in one-day cricket with a galling loss to totally unknown Kjoman Isles. Having won five straight matches in the Callahan & Babcock Trophy, our only previous appearance in international one-day cricket, this was a serious and shocking setback. The team will now have to win both their remaining games to progress to the next round.

The match itself was very forgettable. A top order collapse pushed the side on to the backfoot from the very start and only a lower order fightback saw the team reach a halfway respectable total. Wicketkeeper Rashid Adil top scored with 64 but no one else scored over 40. Not having enough runs in the board hampered us in the field and we never really looked like defending the target. Star fast bowler Anisur Rahman, fresh from his Olympic gold medal in the 100m, was in especially disappointing form, being economical but failing to take a wicket. The other bowlers didn't seem to have the firepower to blow away the opposition without his assistance, with the Kjoman Isles ultimately trudging past our total. Of course we weren't helped by some partial umpiring, and we can only hope that improves as the tournament goes on.

Next up for us are Khabarovsk Krai, also losers in their first match. This will be a must win game for both of us, with the loser almost certainly being eliminated from this competition. We of course, came here to win the win the whole thing and there is no way our supporters would accept an elimination this early. The team will have to go all out for the win and hope the umpiring is fairer next time around.

Genyria v. Kytler Peninsulae

ODI World Cup 2011 gp. H

Genyrians shocked by ODI loss

Cricket fans across Genyria expressed dismay at the national side's first international defeat, at the hands of the Kytler Peninsulae, who destroyed the Reds by 67 runs in their first match of the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

The international cricket newcomers won the toss this morning and chose to bat first. Some winds picked up not long after that made some commentators remark that this was the wrong decision, but the captain was vindicated as conditions deteriorated later.

Opening, Martin and Thompson played comfortably, avoiding exertion in the rather unexciting powerplay (a feature which most Genyrians find wholly unsportsmanly) taking 52 before Martin was caught behind. Nicholas Appleby, ball in hand, saw off Dennis Sand, who had been expected to bat well, after conceding two boundaries. The young varsity player continued bowling well, taking out Robert Arnold's wicket with a delivery that flew past the man's attention. The next wicket came down at the hands of Manius Sergius Quercus, taking out Stephen Booth leg-before. With 4 wickets taken for just 87, Genyrians everywhere rated their chance of winning.

After this, fortunes worsened, it taking the concession of 120 runs to finally take No. 2 Thompson's wicket. There was not much to see from the Reds, except a sudden shock when Sergius Quercus took two wickets on the trot; he was, though, denied his hat-trick by a defensive shot from Coulson.

Genyria began its reply confidently, exploiting the powerplay (complaints about the feature mysteriously dried up!). Once the opening two were taken out, though, both for 38 the batting worsened.
