If someone is diagnosed with a mental illness we castrate them, and put them in special army unis to do tasks such as clearing minefields, having explosives strapped to them, and running into tanks, or running in mass at the enemy to waste their ammo.

Glitched Decepticons are taken to the local Debugging Center, by force if necessary, and their mental errors are patched out. This is a painless process that seems instantaneous to the patient: the patient is temporarily shut down, their Code is repaired, and then they are reactivated. For this reason, most Decepticons have no hesitation in reporting to Debugging on their own if they feel they're not thinking right.

Hardware-based mental errors, such as failed logic chips, faulty RAM, or even corroded personality chips are also repaired by Debugging Centers. The Centers also offer preventive maintenance like regular replacement of vital chips to keep insanity from happening in the first place.

All Code that is intended to be sapient is checked by Debugging before first activation. This ensures that everyone starts out sane - and makes it much easier to fix glitches that develop later.

Unlike in many (if not all) organic nations, sanity is not a subjective designation here. If the Code has no technical errors, the person is deemed sane - even if their opinions and desires are abhorrent to most of society or even dangerous to it. It is not the place of Debugging to make value judgments. To maintain people's trust in the agency, Debuggers are forbidden from passing along the information they discover. They may only fix actual errors, and make patches that are specifically requested by the people who go there.

That said, blathering out objectionable opinions isn't a smart thing to do: thinking to yourself that the Autobots might have had a point is one thing, but actually saying so will get you executed for treason.

There is no stigma associated with being Debugged. It's considered a normal part of life since chips don't last forever. In fact, NOT going to Debugging is what will get a person stigmatized. Our society is bristling with heavy weaponry - in one of our very few nods toward general safety, we place a high priority in being able to have a reasonable expectation that we won't be blasted by random people for delusional reasons.

Adults with mental illnesses are free to live as they wish unless they either authorize a willing person to partially or completely control their life for them and to prevent self-destructive tendencies or they are considered too dangerous to others to be free, at which point they will be placed in either rehabilitation or confinement, depending on their preference and an assessment of their rehabilitability.

Mental health help is available from numerous private agencies; it's often free if you're sufficiently famous, cute or lucky, otherwise you will have to pay for it. People may sell "Mental Health Bonds" which make them owe a part of their future earning potential to the holder of the bond if they recover; these are usually used to fund treatment one could not otherwise afford.

That depends completely on the illness. The four results are, in order, community treatment, institutionalization, imprisonment, and death. All of these are case-by-case, the latter two used on strict definitions.

Take severe autism for an example. It's looked on with sympathy and kindness. Usually schools attempt to help these people through while the Church and the parents look after him or her. This applies to most forms of mental retardation, and also depression. If it's not a threat to society, morality, or others, it's usually left to the Church and the community.

Mental institutions differ from jails because the staff there are ordered to be gentle, kind, compassionate, humane, and caring to their paitients, who are usually there for life.

Prisons, on the contrast, are centers for shame, punishment, and good, hard, healthy penal labor.

We institutionalize such ilk as some transvestites, transgenders, victims of Gender Identity Disorder, people who think they're a god or gods, stalkers, the truly insane, people with clinically severe and endangering delusions of grandeuer, people who merely call for the destruction of others, suicidal maniacs, some emos, the deformed, Nazis, Pastafarians, and anarchists. We also institutionalize those deemed insane by community or parental standards. Those considered to be possessed by demons are made wards of the religious institution of their choosing, or are harbored here in their own padded cells while people try to exorcise them.

We have dabbled in the past with the institutionalization of openly homosexual people, but that was ruled unconstitutional in the landmark 1945 Men&Men v. All Things Good and Decent Supreme Court case.


Lastly, there are the mentallly ill pedophiless, molesters, terrorists, suicide bombers, and sex traffickers. We are more than happy to put these lowlifes to death. Lesser mental illnesses that are jailed instead of institutionalized include those with urges to perform sodomy and buggery, some transvestites, S&M freaks, fetishists, and drunkards.


In TurtleShroom, institutionalization is normally used without the consent of the insane creature, and can be triggered by the state after a trial in court, or by the parents (if minors) at their whim. (If minors are institutionalized, they are re-evaluated at the age of majority, and their fate is decided.)

Most of the mentally ill get their insanity in later life. Why nation's don't bother to check that their leaders have any basic knowledge I don't know. Fools like the leaders of Drekka end up leaving the mad to roam the streets.

For those with mild mental health problems such that they are not judged to be a risk to themselves or others, the state healthcare system provides both medicines on prescription and psychiatric help and advice.

The Mental Health Act gives police the power to arrest "anyone who is or appears to be mentally ill in a public place or in a police station and who, in the opinion of the officer, is in immediate danger of causing harm to themselves or another or to property, or is about to commit, as a result of their illness, any indictable offense, or has committed any non-indictable offense as a result of their illness." The use of this power allows police to involuntarily commit any person thereby arrested to a secure mental hospital for evaluation and treatment.
