Metal Genre Music Discussion

Postby Demen 2 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 12:58 pm

That's right. Finally a place where you can just talk about metal. But I have a few ground rules:

1. I will NOT tolerate trolls here. You don't like metal? Cool. But stay out.
2. NO flaming about other's opinions. Live and let live.
3. Spam isn't cool. Get me?

Alright. Now that we have that out of the way, I figure I'll name just a few Metal bands I listen to. And by a few, I mean 30.

Grayceon, Coffinworm, Om, Sleep, Acid Bath, Acid Witch, Death, Gorod, Anata, Beyond Creation, Fleshgod Apocolypse, Suma, Khanate, Sunn O))), Bongripper, Bongzilla, Sardonis, Maudlin of the Well, Iniquity, Agalloch, Altar of Plagues, Alcest, Woods of Ypres, Omega Massif, Nile, Baroness, Conan, 40 Watt Sun, Egypt and Ahab.

Now that you have a rough idea of what my taste in Metal is, what about you? Favorite bands, sub-genres, artists, drummers, guitarists, etc. All is welcome in the general Metal thread.

Metal!

I'm absolutely crazy about Thy Catafalque at the moment. Incredible creativity and ability to dip into different styles from their black metal-ish base without it ever seeming forced or gimmicky.

I'll copy the OP and list some of my favorite bands..

Favorite non-Melodic Death Metal Bands: Death, Pestilence, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Carcass, Opeth, and Nocturnus.

Favorite Folk Metal Bands: Eluveitie, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Cruachan, Skyforger, Ensiferum, Wintersun, Primordial, and Turisas. I hate Alestorm and any "pirate metal"

Favorite Thrash Metal Bands: Metallica, Overkill, Death Angel, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, Kreator, Stone, Destruction, and Annihilator.

Favorite Progressive Metal Bands: Opeth, Raintime, Dream Theater, Halcyon Way, Amorphis, Mercyful Fate, Control Denied, and Tool.

Favorite Doom Metal Bands: Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Saint Vitus, Black Sabbath, and Anathema.

Favorite Sludge Metal Bands: Kylesa, Mastodon, Corrosion of Conformity, and Baroness

Favorite Black Metal-ish Bands: Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Wolves In The Throne Room, Bathory, and Sworn.

Classic Heavy Metal I like: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Led Zep(?)

May Or May Not Be Metal: Avenged Sevenfold, Tool, Korn, Insect Warfare, Rage Against the Machine, Deftones, Led Zepellin, System of a Down, Vision of Disorder, 40 Below Summer, Disturbed, Trivium, Bloodsimple, Black Flag, Neurosis.

My favorite metal genres would have to be Death Metal (esp. Melodeath), Thrash Metal, and Folk Metal.
Favorite five bands are Amorphis, In Flames, Scar Symmetry, Metallica, and Death.

Thank you.

And Cradle of Filth? Korn? Avenged Sevenfold? Disturbed? Trivium? Why?

I know you don't like Nu Metal or Metalcore. But I do enjoy some nu metal and metalcore bands.
I understand you don't like those, but what's wrong with Cradle of Filth?

And instead of picking out the few bands/genres in my list that you hate and talking about those, why don't we discuss the bands/genres we both like? I'd much rather have a good conversation about metal than argue endlessly over why I like some of the bands I do.

I like most Metalcore, believe it or not.

I've never saw anything inherently wrong with bands like A Day To Remember or Miss May I or I Killed the Prom Queen. Of course, I prefer Converge type Metalcore, but I don't really mind Pop Punk vocals.

I like black metal and black influenced viking/folk metal.

Some of my favorite bands are:

Falkenbach, Darkthrone, Marduk, Taake, Immortal, Horna, Satanic Warmaster, Behexen, Beastcraft, Tsjuder, old Satyricon (Nemesis Divina era), Iuvenes, Bathory, Carpathian Forest, Archgoat, Graveland, and Vulture Lord to name a few. Black metal fucking rules.

On the topic of metalcore...

- I don't think there's anything wrong with them persay, but I've never been a fan of bands like ADTR. Just not my style.

- A7X put out some very good metalcore in their early days that I don't think gets enough credit. People automatically count them among the list of "shitty metalcore" just because people dislike their later work.

- And, of course, Converge always will be among the best metalcore bands. Dark Horse is one of my favorite metalcore songs.

Do you like Amorphis or Kylesa? I've been getting into both bands a lot recently

Favourite metal bands: Dream Theatre, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer, In Flames, The Haunted, Lamb of God, Soulfly
I would say Enter Shikari, but I hardly classify them as metal.

Lack of sludge and drone metal makes me a sad boy. There's some prog being represented, though, so I guess I can't complain.

I guess I should post a list. I'll do that later.

I like some stuff by The Sword, Bathory, Motorhead and Black Sabbath. I know some people think of Zeppelin as metal, and they're one of my favourite bands - as are AC/DC but I don't class either of them as metal. I'm not big into it as you can see, heheh.

No one has mentioned Metallica?

Yeah, I know: You can walk in to any junior high and find some dumbass 13 year old going "HURR DURR! MEHTAHLUCKA!" Indeed, they've almost become a caricature of metal. But until they sold out, there were fucking good. They lose one of the greatest bassists in metal and it doesn't slow them down. Their castoffs became gods.
