World Cup about to begin

The finest rugby players from South Bucks are making their way to Swartaz for their first appearance at the World Cup. This side is new to international competition, and pundits are all united in the view that the side will struggle. Group J has a strong look to it, with South Bucks taking on 18th ranked Delaclava, Kalumba and The Kiaser Colonies. Delaclava are the team with the pedigree in this competition, but in this reporter's opinion it is The Kiaser Colonies who may well find themselves topping the group. Kalumba will be no pushover either so this is no gentle introduction to international rugby for the boys in red and black. South Bucks' open field play looks woeful at the moment, so all eyes rest on the pack, who certainly can mix it with the best. Luke Morrison's scrummaging will be crucial in any South Bucks victory, and he's no mug with the ball in hand either. He is probably the only player who is close to world class in the side.
So what can we expect from the team? Coach Matthew Allen is looking for a bit of pride from the boys "Obviously we wouldn't be here if we weren't looking to win, but we also have to recognise that there are some top established sides around. I want to see us put 100% into every game, and if we do that we should have no trouble winning a few games"

Azerbaistan name squad for world cup
The Azerbaistani coach Mikael Federov Sr. has just named his team for the impending world cup in Swartaz. The teams captain Remy Tony expressed his delight when he was asked his opinion on the team. He said "We are delighted to be the first team to represent the nation on a world stage." He also was realistic in his asssement however as he also let everyone know that the team is also one of the most inexperienced squads in the competition. "We don't want to disgrace ourselves in this world stage, as long as we don't get beaten by cricket scores we will be happy" said Remy as the press confrence ended. Things should be tough for the Pandas as the bookies odds for the team to win the competition are 100000/1 (Bet.com)

Polar Islandstates Rugby Union Roster

For the upcoming Rugby Union World Cup, head coach Pep van Housengamm is forced to choose a selection of players that have never played together in a competitive match. Drawing players from the central heartlands of the game in the original four states of the Federation of Axel Heiburg, Franz Josef, Svalbard and Victorrinn, he will nonetheless look to the imperious figure of team captain Anders Rosenmeyer, hailing from Northbrook, to lead the team despite his young years. Rugby is a sport that is followed enthusiastically in the Federation, and though still lagging some way behind football, the standard of play is getting better and better as times go on. Anything beyond the group stage would be a massive achievement here, and following Khytenna through will be the best this team can realistically hope for.

FIVE of the Unitopolitan rugby team were briefly held by police after a night of heavy drinking and probably recreational drugs.

Immigrant

The rogue group, which included an immigrant, and two youths under twenty years old, were arrested by brave cops in Goteburg as they ignored all laws of decency and politeness.

Shouting

One bystander told us; "There was about 5 of them by the bar, shouting and laughing loudly from nine o'clock until at least midnight. I was trying to enjoy a few drinks by myself during that time and I could hear them from my table."

Police

The disgraceful players weren't content with ruining just one person's night however, as they then moved outside to the pavement, where Roger Cissé ended up in a brawl until police intervened.

Tried

"A guy came up and tried to throw a punch at Roger but he missed. The lads ignored him and thankfully the police were on hand to sort things out" said an un-named friend. The Unitopolitan Rugby Association declined to comment on these horrific events.

Darmen, preview for the RWC
Darmen plays in Group H of the 17th RWC. Playing against Virabia, Chenkorya, and Zeraxia, Darmen looks to come in first or second of the group stage. With a young team, look for Darmen to squeak by against Chenkorya, dominate Zeraxia, and maybe give Virabia a little scare but ultimatley loose.

Amidst Hockey Fervour, Is Rugby Cotdelapoms' Best Chance?

Let's face it, this is a crazy time for Cotdelapoms' national sports teams. Our basketball team had been valiantly fighting an effort to make it to Civil Citizenry for the International Basketball Championship, although thanks to two losses to Civil Citizenry they are mathematically eliminated, regardless of the result for CC against the Commonwealth of Isles. Still, a 4-4 effort in the final round of qualifying represented the best effort yet for the Apple Trees. In baseball, the Apples also find themselves with a .500 record about halfway through, and will need a late surge to advance to the knockout rounds, but this is not impossible if Benoît Larcher has something to say about it.

And oh, I'm sure if you've gone outside or turned on the television in Cotdelapoms in the last few weeks all you've really heard about is the World Cup of Hockey which we are hosting in our beautiful home, and that has been going excellently. The Apples on Ice have been splendid, currently undefeated and among the top 3 teams thusfar. This is a hockey country, and the people have been in a great mood as a result of our recent hockey success. However, we are still hardly a favourite to win the whole tournament and bring some sort of major international sporting gold to Cotdelapoms- something that has still yet to happen in the years since the end of isolation...

Something that could potentially be changed just north of us in Swartaz with the 17th Rugby Union World Cup! Frédéric Jolicœur's team are the 8th ranked side in the world, and are the only ranked team in our initial group, something that is giving Cotdelapomais rugby fans hope for the future. This year's team looks stronger than the team from the 16th Championship, boosted by the strengthening of the Croix Bleue Premiership. The forwards are led by big Abdoulie Goän, who is as strong a player as there is in the multiverse, and who propels the pack as well as anyone. Number 8 Shannon Noébrand of Outremont is pacy and strong and a pretty decent drop kicker. He is a confident emotional leader and was Cotdelapoms' leading try scorer in the 16th Championship. They will have to initiate some new faces, as the pack has changed from the last time out- adding the likes of Curtis Wickham.

In the back, the team is almost exactly the same save for the addition of Tristan Olöfsson, which should be helpful for chemistry. Johann Racicot is a precise place kicker and will handle those duties and can also score a try or two on his own. Noël Coderre avoiding injury will be huge in helping propel the Apples ahead. Cotdelapoms is a sports mad nation starving for gold, and whilst we are an ice hockey nation first and foremost perhaps our eyes should be focused just a bit northward on our massive rugby brethren who just may be the first Apples team to win a World Championship.

Rugby Madness hits fever pitch

Rugby fever has swept the nation as the Azerbaistani team had arrived in Swartaz last sunday for the Rugby world cup. There were thousands of fans at the main airport in Bashkent to wish the team good luck as they left the country last Saturday. The President even arrived to wish the team luck and said a few words on behalf of the general public. "We would like to wish you luck and that you can put the nation truly on the world map as far as rugby is concerned. Go Pandas!" said the president in front of the large crowd gathered at the airport. The CEO of Gunnard, Philip Reprovsi, the Arms manufacturing firm and largest employer of the nation, also presented the team with new jerseys to the captain, Remy Tony, and coach Mikael Federov Sr.

Remy thanked the public for giving their support and hopes that they can give their support throughout the campaign. He also thanked the team's sponsor for providing the team with the new kit.

As the team left, the nation's number 1 selling pop artist, Retina, held a concert at the airport for the team. Three team members, Fredi, Alexander Samanov and Bill Riley, suprised the crowd by getting up and singing along with Retina as she sang her bestselling hit, Teenage Love. Remy said that they should stick to playing rugby. As the team left for Swartaz, it was evident for all to see that Rugby Fever has really hit Azerbaistan.

With the Market Cup fever pitch just about to die down, the Charles the Great pub is now buzzing with the newest tournament, the 17th Rugby Union World Cup. Facing the likes of Kazzoria, Kernansquillec, and Cybord Holland, the patrons have gotten excited over the thought of the Union boys actually doing well in a tournament.

"The tournament starts tonight, and looking at the group, I think we may come out on top."

"Certainly Kazzoria will gives us problems, but as far as the other two teams are concerned, I don't foresee a challenge."

"Ah, but that's how some of these teams get you. They lull you into a false sense of security and power, then they come up and bite you in the behind, stealing a win from you."

"True, true. But look at the track record of these teams. I don't think they even have a track record. You can't tell me they'll some out of nowhere and surprise everyone."

"May I direct you to our very own rugby team, who in their very first World Cup won their group. You mean to tell me it can't happen again?"

"We may have won the group, but we didn't make it past the first knockout round. It showed how inexperienced our players were. If we made it to the knockout round playing like we did with that little experience, I just don't see these other two young teams doing the same things."

"We'll have to wait and see, but first we have Kazzoria who has some experience in rugby before."

"They were in the Six Nations Cup earlier this year, but how did they do? Only 1 win. So they are no better than the other two."

"I hope you are right. Here's to the Eagles, may they execute great tries tonight!"

Kalumba humbled in opening match!

Kalumba started their Rugby World Cup campaign brilliantly with a brilliantly worked drop goal in the opening five minutes. Frank Worth went past two defenders then cut the ball back to Godfrey Steptoe on the twenty-two, who then sent a beautifully weighted kick straight between the posts. But after that it was a complete and utter shambles. Rory Thompson was sent off for eye-gouging in the eigth minute and will miss the remainder of the tournament suspended. From that minute on we were on the back foot with Deleclava moving the ball easily in front of our 14 men. Just before half time they went over the line and converted the try. At 7-3 down at half time things were looking bad for the 14 men of Kalumba. In the second half things went from bad to worse, with Deleclava simply playing with the national team. They moved the ball in front of us and threatened to cross the line many times, twice going over in the corner only to be ruled out by the touch judge. But with three minutes remaining they crossed the line in the corner and failed to convert, leaving the score respectable but not the other stats:

His stupid behaviour cost the team a strong start and from that moment on we were beaten. Credit to the Deleclave team but as far as i am concerned our 15 players could have gone on to win that game."

Kalumba must now win their remaining two matches to stand any chance of qualifying from the group but with both The Kiaser Colonies and South Bucks putting in strong performances the team looks doomed. But perhaps Lady Luck will smile on us and the indomitable Kalumban spirit will help us on to victory.

Colmark start with a win

Colmark started their Rugby World Cup campaign with a convincing 32-19 win over Khabarovsk Krai. Colmark were hugely pumped going into this match, as months of waiting for the pinnacle of rugby competition were over, and it showed as their inexperienced opponents were given a lesson in international rugby as a superb opening 20 minutes saw Colmark return to the changing rooms 24-8 to the good. From the kickoff, Colmark turned the ball over and attacked relentlessly through the forwards. Khabarovsk Krai couldn't cope and committed too many men around the ruck, which left an overlap on the wing. The ball was shovelled out and Sam Oliver strolled in for an early try. James Stevenson then slotted a 30 metre penalty and Colmark were well and truly off to the races. The second try came 10 minutes later as indiscipline from Khabarovsk Krai saw them concede a string of penalties, which William Peel ordered to be kicked to the corner. The gamble paid off as the powerful Colmarkian rolling maul claimed its first victim as the maul powered relentlessly over the line, with Michael Russel in control of the ball. A third try was added half an hour in as Adam Harbaugh made a typically dynamic break upfield, before offloading deftly to Allan Harvis, who outpaced the defence to score. Khabarovsk Krai had in the meantime added a solitary penalty, but shortly before the break they scored their first try through Tamati Mikaere who burst through a vacant hole in the defence to score. This sparked a small comeback from Khabarovsk Krai who fought hard throughout and have potential in the future, as they added a second try courtesy of Adam Maas, who broke a poor attempt at a tackle from Charles Rocknan to score. When Khabarovsk Krai also added another penalty, some of their fans sensed and unlikely comeback may be on the cards. It was however, not to be as Colmark dominated possession and territory for the rest of the game, grinding down their opponents and adding another try from a William Peel pick and go, and a further penalty to end the game as comfortable winners.

There are just 25 seconds to go in this match, South Bucks lead 18-17. Who would have thought it? They are up against the wall here, with a scrum on their own 5 metre line. It all comes down to this...

Crouch.....Touch......Pause................ENGAGE!
"HIT TWO THREE YES TWO THREE..............DRIVE!!!!"

The scrum in under huge pressure, you can see the ground breaking up, they look to.... YES! They have kept the ball! But wait! The scrum has collapsed, lets see what the referee makes of this. He looks over at his touchjudge and ..... he gives a penalty to The Kiaser Colonies! And that is almost certainly game over, you can't miss this kick. What a shame the game has been decided by that. Lets look at the reply. Oh my. Oh that looks like a poor call from the referee to me, you can clearly see the Kiaser Colonies prop slipping his bind, right Jim?

Thats right Tom, you can see their prop lose his grip on Marcus Prodanovic which causes the scrum to collapse. That is a shcoking decision.

You can hear howls of derision from the South Bucks fans here today, and Matthew Allen has just seen it on the big screen, he is furious. The penalty sails over, who didn't expect that, and The Kiaser Colonies win. What a shame, what a shame that a game as good as this has been decided in such a manner. The referee looks apologetic as he must have looked at the big screen, but there is nothing he can do - South Bucks have lost.

Anders Rosenmeyer's heart was in his mouth. He'd just run over the line for a try. Batting off the Khytenna defence as they surged against him, battling, straining, and pushing hard. He'd crossed the line in a bundle and slammed the ball down. It had been a fine try, a well deserved try, and a captain's try. Khytenna were the reigning holders of the RUWC, and they had played well, if unconvincingly, but had only made the opportunities to score a single converted try, and Polar Islandstates had battled well to get themselves back in the game, showing no respect to their opponents' reputation whatsoever.

And so now here Anders was. Standing with the rest of his team, watching Kristophe Marek take a few steps back and size up the kick. Seven points to five. This was a tough kick, right out on the touchline, but it would make them equal. Tied for points with Khytenna, Anders could barely believe it. Here it was. Kristophe ran up. He struck the ball. Anders watched it sail, sailing, spinning, soaring, flying...

Missed.

Head in hands, Kristophe turned around and looked at his captain. Younger in years, Anders nonetheless showed a mature head and consoled his team mate.

"It's okay Kristophe, come on. RIGHT OKAY GUYS HEADS UP! THERE'S THREE MINUTES LEFT AND WE CAN DO THIS! COME ON!"

Lining up for the restart, van der Freyde took the catch, he passed to Anders, Anders turned and took the tackle, laying the ball out quickly to Morrestrad. Morrestrad dummied, feigned, quickstepped, and passed the ball to Marek who was stood in space. Marek stopped, he looked around, van Keirrison was accelerating up behind him, Kristophe made the kick.

Spinning, the ball looped over the Khytenna defence and bounced wildly, straight into the arms of the thundering van Keirrison, who darted past Knapp and threw himself into the corner for a glorious, glorious try.

Anders' heart was in his mouth no longer. To tell the truth he didn't really know where his heart was. Nor did he care that Kristophe missed the conversion. He'd made the important kick by then, the one that sent away van Keirrison. Khytenna 7-10 Polar Islandstates. Anders took a mental picture of the scoreboard. What a night. What a debut.

The red shirts of Khytenna looked dumbstruck at full time, and Anders consoled them at full time, shaking hands as the quartered shirts of Polar Islandstates celebrated wildly, falling to the turf in disbelief. This was it, Polar Islandstates had arrived at the RUWC.

Noébrand Hungry For Tries

Cotdelapoms 44-13 Wolfmanne

RWC first timers Wolfmanne put up more of a fight than expected in opening round play in Swartaz, but the Strong Apples put them away with little storm or stress. Cotdelapoms started out with an early try from number 8 Shannon Noébrand, who broke through a gap in the defence thanks to some key blocking by big Abdoulie Goän. Noël Coderre used his blazing speed to score a second time, which was ultimately the match winner elusively ducking two would-be tacklers.
