With the season three fifths complete, let's take a look at the table.

It would seem that it's up to two teams to have it out with each other for the title: Zhevassi and Juvapanam. Both have shown exemplary defensive resilience in their campaigns thus far, unsurprising for the former on account of their stellar center halves and defensive midfielder, but somewhat surprising for the latter on account of their seemingly attack-first 3-5-2 formation. While Urajbina were considered possible favorites at the season's outset, they now appear to have dropped too many points to be in contention (though they look a much better bet now that they did a few matchdays ago). They should, however, quite comfortably claim a Globe Cup spot and are well within reach of a TQCC berth.

Talking of Globe Cup places, Shadows are in good position to claim one, as they always seem to be. Other teams ought to be in the mix, though they were not predicted to be: Krevetka and FKM. The Shrimp have flourished under new manager Alain Letetre, and Demyan Ilych appears to be having the season he defiantly said he would when the year began. The People's Club, meanwhile, have declined in form somewhat since the early part of the season (when they were top of the league), but still look highly organized and motivated (thanks in no small part to new manager Brutušam Erassi's legendary man-management skills). Fans of the orange and silver are, however, still somewhat cranky: they'd undoubtedly like to see a few more goals getting scored.

Šudhan Chahachim's Vulkan are having a desperately disappointing season, and sit in seventh. They had hoped to be somewhere near the second-place region they finished in last season, but that dream doesn't appear to be coming to fruition. While Pat Saunders, Leo Shcherbina, and Chaya Vuhumkara seem to be partnering quite well, the defense barely resembles the terrifying spectre it was the previous season. Yastrabi are right behind them, though being in the middle of the table seems about appropriate for the Hawks.

Peregrina Thašighi's decision to leave Therakham for Xenon seems to finally have been vindicated, as at last her new club is performing slightly better than her old one, having knocked in a reasonable number of goals despite still having a shabby defense. All in all, Xenon have performed substantially better than they were expected to. Therakham, meanwhile, are thrilled to be in tenth, as just a few matchdays ago they were in the relegation zone. That said, despite this slight upturn in fortunes, the black and blue are still in a great deal of trouble on and off the pitch, with a shattered squad that don't like or even respect one another.

Gimnasia have been enduring a spectacularly boring year and have looked exactly as commentators and fans alike expected them to: below average and shamelessly cynical. Will they have more joy in the Vahavi? Urnabhi seem to be doing all right under the stewardship of Boris Timriz; while occupying twelve this nothing to write home about, considering that they had been worried about relegation at the start of the year, they'll gladly take it. Angels have had an odd year, having scored plenty but sporting the worse defense in the First Division; but generally will feel similar sentiments to those of Urnabhi's... they too are above the drop.

The teams that are not, however, are looking like they deserve to be where they are. Corazo Fortran's Begemoti have been shockingly poor, currently on a seven-match losing stretch and showing none of the gritty determination they have had over the last few years under the command of Yegor Gaznayev. It's looking like their ticket back to the Second Division has already been stamped. But Begemoti's assuredness of relegation is nothing compared to that of YKY and Vezhidrupa, who have been barely relevant as First Division competitors. Both of the latter have tried to survive the top flight using defensive tactics, and this was clearly not a good idea.

Remember, a conventional, season-long cup competition is run for Kagdaz teams, but Pazhujebis use an "American-style" end-of-season playoff knockout based on the final league table! The winners of the large 26-team Kagdaz bracket meet the winners of the small 4-team Pazhujebi bracket in the final, held at a neutral venue.

Team-by-Team Breakdown

ANGELS
Nickname(s): The Kuratmad Kids, The Red and Blue
Colors: Red and sky blue
City, Country: Dyurtyuli, Kagdazka and Mahathu, Pazhujebu
Stadium(s): The Ice Cube (81,000 seats) and Praça de Prata (66,000)
Manager: Ugo Stowell (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
Notable Players: Vuhumkara
Finish Last Year: 13th
Supporter Politics: Right-wing
Supporter Expectations: Lower mid-table
NSwiki Page
Notes: You can bet that Vuhumkara returning to his boyhood club is going to sell a lot of shirts for Angels. But shouldn't they be working on that defense? It leaked the most goals of any team in the First Division one year ago, more even than all of relegated clubs. Stowell seems to have a handle on things, at least.

BFZ
Nickname(s): The Racists
Colors: Red, lime green, black, and white
City, Country: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Stadium: Nikel Gornyakov Sad (34,000 seats)
Manager: Syoma Fedyushyn (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: Trubachev
Finish Last Year: Second Division, Group A, 1st
Supporter Politics: Far, far right-wing
Supporter Expectations: Escape relegation
NSwiki Page
Notes: They no longer have full ownership of their best player, dynamic left back Danya Trubachev. But after having bought the defender, Zhevassi are loaning him back to BFZ for a year. He probably won't be enough to keep the Racists from going back down, though. (Good, thinks every sane person in the country.)

FKM
Nickname(s): The Orange and Silver, The People's Club
Colors: Orange and silver
City, Country: CMZ Metropolitan Area, Kagdazka
Stadium: FKM Arena (69,000 seats)
Manager: Brutušam Erassi (Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Dasra, Diawara, Rostov
Finish Last Year: 6th
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Globe Cup spot
NSwiki Page
Notes: Finally, FKM look like they've finally put together a set of prolific strikers. But to do it they've sold their best asset; center back Tikhomirov is off to Zhevassi. Could the defense suffer? The fans don't care, but as it turns out, you have to be able to stop other teams from scoring on you if you want to win the title.

GIMNASIA
Nickname(s): The Antiques, The Good Old Boys
Colors: Turquoise and wisteria
City, Country: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Stadium: Gelendzhik Stadion (35,000 seats)
Manager: Zivan Zagorinski (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: Filipov, Levantis, Reynard
Finish Last Year: 10th
Supporter Politics: Mixed
Supporter Expectations: Lower mid-table
NSwiki Page
Notes: Filipov is back! Like many Gimnasia players, he didn't truly blossom until he left the club, transferred to Urajbina a year ago. But Urajbina's ownership change has resulted in Filipov being pushed out of the starting eleven. Rather than sit on the bench, Filipov asked to be loaned back home, and his club agreed.

JUVAPANAM
Nickname(s): The Sky and Silver, The Invincibles
Colors: Sky blue and silver
City, Country: Juvapanam, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Sampa Gumbada Stidiyama (48,000 seats)
Manager: Paul Clayton (Krytenia)
Notable Players: Bawuah, Chahachim, Dhivadha, Gašughumi, Ghur, Iamaxiro, Lomi, Qaavigaaq, Sartelli, Tnetennba, Urrustoy
Finish Last Year: 2nd
Supporter Politics: Moderate
Supporter Expectations: Title
NSwiki Page
Notes: Finally last year they let the title slip from their fingers. Though they have a chance to get it back this year, they might want to get it done sooner rather than later; Urrustoy is retiring at season's end. And how will losing Mendez to their hated enemies Urajbina affect the squad's psyche? Or will it at all?

KREVETKA
Nickname(s): The Shrimp
Colors: Wisteria and white
City, Country: Oktyabrsk, Kagdazka
Stadium: Banditi Zaliv Stadion (40,000 seats)
Manager: Alain Letetre (Cotdelapoms)
Notable Players: Andrea, Ilych, Kahan
Finish Last Year: 7th
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Upper mid-table
NSwiki Page
Notes: Looks like Krevetka are going to be a fun team to watch this season. They might not win the league, or even be in contention for a UICA spot, but they'll certainly put on a good show as Letetre's got them playing in a nice fluid style. And now they have one of Erathore's best strikers on their books to boot.

RAKTAGHAV HATHI
Nickname(s): The Red Elephants
Colors: Red and white
City, Country: Emuzhezh, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Emuzhezh Stidiyama (36,000 seats)
Manager: Taras Strogolev (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: -
Finish Last Year: Second Division, Group C, 1st
Supporter Politics: Right-wing
Supporter Expectations: Escape relegation
NSwiki Page
Notes: Oh, the Emuzhezh Derby is going to be fun. Not for the football, of course. Both Hathi and Urnabhi are crap. But boy, do they ever hate each other. This is the best small-town rivalry in the country, and now we've got the pleasure of seeing these two duke it out over what looks like a single safe spot in next year's top flight.

SHADOWS
Nickname(s): The Silver and Black
Colors: Silver and black
City, Country: Pkethat Šede, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Avazhughij Arena (47,000 seats)
Manager: Oghu’ghabuzheh Palšikar (Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Corretja, Elminster, Ignatyev, Sapano, Uharhi
Finish Last Year: 4th
Supporter Politics: Moderate
Supporter Expectations: Upper mid-table
NSwiki Page
Notes: In recent years, you could depend on Shadows to get into the Globe Cup spots (or maybe even higher). But it looks like the days of the Silver and Black finishing in the top five are over. Minus Zanga and Aghimaqaj, they're going to be offensively toothless, and nobody knows how Palšikar plans to fix things.

THERAKHAM
Nickname(s): The Black and Blue
Colors: Blue, black, and white
City, Country: Mahathu, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Therakham Velodrama (52,000 seats)
Manager: Yegor Gaznayev (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: Khorkuleva, Unzueta
Finish Last Year: 9th
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Upper mid-table
NSwiki Page
Notes: Dangerously close to relegation over the first half of last year, Yegor Gaznayev's Therakham pulled out of a nose dive right at the death and somehow managed to finish in mid-table. But what's going to happen this year? No new money means no new players, and Khorkuleva and Unzueta aren't exactly superstars.

URAJBINA
Nickname(s): The Yellow, Red, and Blue
Colors: Yellow, blue, and red
City, Country: Urajbina, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Oberlander'ajat Stidiyama (41,000 seats)
Manager: Steven Sanchez (Pretty Awesome Persons)
Notable Players: Bhara, Govou, Hallvarðsdóttir, Hovi, Marinho, Mendez, Ošafi, Pekarik, Rudinei, Shapiro, Vazavorski
Finish Last Year: 3rd
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Title
NSwiki Page
Notes: Grab those Portuguese-Pazhujebi and Portuguese-English dictionaries, Urajbina fans. The new owners of this superclub have totally revamped the squad after a disappointing third place finish behind arch-rivals Zhevassi and Juvapanam. But is it too much of a shock? This is practically a brand-new team.

URNABHI
Nickname(s): The Spiders
Colors: Dark pink and orange
City, Country: Emuzhezh, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Emuzhezh Stidiyama (36,000 seats)
Manager: Cheslav Isyanov (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: Da Costa, Vaskaryev
Finish Last Year: 12th
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Lower mid-table

VULKAN
Nickname(s): The Volcano, The Burgundy
Colors: Burgundy and wisteria
City, Country: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Stadium: Yuzhniy Veter Stadion (51,000 seats)
Manager: Šudhan Chahachim (Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Andropov, Blanc-Senac, Hu, Litvinov, Obolensky, Ruiz, Saunders, Shcherbina, Thašighi
Finish Last Year: 5th
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Globe Cup spot
NSwiki Page
Notes: Vulkan don't look any worse for having dumped off Vuhumkara. Instead they've nabbed Yegor Obolensky from their enemies across town at Gimnasia and tempted the lascivious Peregrina Thašighi away from Xenon. The Vulcano's midfield looks quite good, and this team should be in or around the Globe Cup spots.

XENON
Nickname(s): The X
Colors: Navy blue
City, Country: Gvardeysk, Kagdazka
Stadium: Forestry Department Street (60,000 seats)
Manager: Khuzhu Uthassišabipa (Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Beenum, Belyakov, Zhu
Finish Last Year: 11th
Supporter Politics: Mixed
Supporter Expectations: Lower mid-table
NSwiki Page
Notes: Why the hell haven't they fired Uthassišabipa yet? It beggars belief to suggest that the players want him there, and the fans all hate him. So... who wants him to stay? Xenon were already a disaster, and now the only entertaining thing about the club (the usually half-naked midfielder Thašighi) is gone.

YASTRABI
Nickname(s): The Hawks
Colors: Amber and white
City, Country: Dyurtyuli, Kagdazka
Stadium: The Ice Cube (81,000 seats)
Manager: Wladyslaw Bashirskaya (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: Abston, Christ, Hardy, Harishandra, Milano, Orbizo, Spyopolous, Yir, Zanga, Zha
Finish Last Year: 8th
Supporter Politics: Right-wing
Supporter Expectations: Globe Cup spot
NSwiki Page
Notes: It seems to have taken him a few years to work his magic, but the transfer wiz Bashirskaya has put together a really nice looking young team up in Dyurtyuli. Though they've got plenty of foreign talent, what really catches the eye is their all-Federation strike trio. You can't help but hope they do well.

ZHEVASSI
Nickname(s): The Galacticos
Colors: Sky blue, orange, and metallic gold
City, Country: Zhevassi, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Graha'ajat Stidiyama (79,000 seats)
Manager: Nemešiabhi Ja (Pazhujebu)
Notable Players: Akhmetbekov, Albornos, Ghedafghupa, Nelsinho, Omelchenko, Sultano, Tikhomirov, Udachin, Ujubnu, Vasilisa, Yakoko
Finish Last Year: Champions
Supporter Politics: Right-wing
Supporter Expectations: Title
NSwiki Page
Notes: You'd have to be a moron to bet against the Galacticos winning the league again. On paper and on the pitch, they have the best squad in the league, made all the more terrifying because they are still so young. National team center back Tikhomirov is only going to make them better. A repeat is most likely on the way.

ŠEŠRI'MAKARU
Nickname(s): The Purple and White, The Puppets
Colors: Purple and white
City, Country: Šešri'makaru, Pazhujebu
Stadium: Šešri'makaru Metrodome (20,000 seats)
Manager: Kiriyak Dzhamgerchinov (Kagdazka)
Notable Players: Petrachkov
Finish Last Year: Second Division, Group B, 1st
Supporter Politics: Left-wing
Supporter Expectations: Escape relegation
NSwiki Page
Notes: This could be painful to watch. What do you get when you combine a pet project of a lousy manager out of work, a bunch of players who are good at absolutely nothing other than defending, and a team that is universally hated in their own hometown? Šešri'makaru, that's what you get. They will most likely finish last.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The inaugural season of the BANBC is here! After longer-than hoped for delays, and an extended brouhaha with Cotdelapomais officials regarding the admission of Cotdelapoms international in the league (OOC: CDP, I lost the list of players you gave me... again... sorry, I suck), at last we have a sport other than football to watch in the Federation!

Which might be quite a good thing; maybe everyone won't be so devastated when stuff like Urajbina finishing thirteenth in the league happens. So, anyway, nobody really knows any of these teams, because they're all brand new. And if there are any rivalries, it's just because the fans carry them over from the football First Division. That could be quite fun though.

So here's how this is going to work. There are fifteen teams in the BANBC. There is no relegation and promotion. Just fifteen teams, so if you don't have one in your town, suck it up and go back to watching footy. Now, there will be two different "halves" to this championship. The first one is the "league." Each of the fifteen teams plays the other four times, twice at home and twice away, for a total of 56 games in a season. Now, this doesn't sound like much, but there's more to it.

The other half of the competition is known as the "cup," and this will be a knockout tournament that will run alongside the league, with ties decided randomly. Each tie will consist of a best-of-nine series. By the end of the year, two teams will be left, and they'll play out the "cup finals."

The winner of that series will go on to the Ridonkadonk-Bigass-Mega-Championship Series, there met by the winner of the league finals, contested by the top two teams from the league season (also a nine-game series). The Ridonkadonk-Bigass-Mega-Championship (known as the BetAvalanche.kpz Ridonkadonk-Bigass-Mega-Championship Series for sponsorship reasons) will be the final event of the year, the cup and league champions battling it out to determine the overall champion.

In all likelihood, the above is really complicated and hard to figure out. Too bad, this isn't football so we don't care enough to spell-check anything.

But I guess we can list all of the teams for you.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

SEASON 1, PART 1

---BANBC Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Zebras 14 9 5 1057 1008 +49
2 Orange Berets 14 9 5 1017 957 +60
3 Jamaicans 14 9 5 1115 1024 +91
4 Nighthawks 14 8 6 1016 968 +48
5 Purple Frogs 14 8 6 1059 1031 +28
6 Inferno 14 8 6 1097 1062 +35
7 Greyhounds 14 8 6 868 877 −9
8 Ice Lions 14 7 7 1089 1160 −71
9 Internationals 14 6 8 1101 1074 +27
10 Paladins 14 6 8 984 1006 −22
11 Archers 14 6 8 1114 1153 −39
12 Yellow Jackets 14 6 8 1087 1124 −37
13 Unicorns 14 6 8 1067 1072 −5
14 Quasars 14 5 9 1082 1132 −50
15 Dolphins 14 4 10 947 1052 −105

The Urajbina Purple Frogs came flying out of the traps like a house on fire thanks to their dynamic power forward Anastasiy Yuran, already the rebound king of the league. His excellent clean-up play and defensive work ethic made Urajbina look the class of the league early on as they won their first four matches. But then things began to sour as flashier sides like the Mahathu Zebras, the Dyurtyuli Orange Berets, and the Juvapanam Jamaicans found their feet. Now, after Matchday Fifteen, the Zebras are atop the BANBC standings ahead of the Orange Berets and the Jamaicans on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Meanwhile, the worst teams in the league look to be, by quite a distance, the Pkethat Šede Quasars and the Gelendzhik Dolphins, the former due to horrific defending and the latter due to point guard Ksirasukla Apio not being able to hit a basket even if there was a gun to his head.

The Gelendzhik Greyhounds are an interesting story, and not only because of their far-right-wing fans. They're solidly mid-table, but what's interesting is that they have both the league's best defense and the league's worst offense. Their shooting is miserable, and yet they're getting by because of their ability to control the pace of play with their excellent presence in the paint. Will they improve as the season moves on? There's a huge clump at the top of the table, and the Greyhounds could make a push if they sort out their shooting.

GAME 9
Internationals 78–77 Archers (Internationals win series 5 games to 4)

First of all, the Juvapanam Jamaicans got lucky; they were awarded a first-round bye for this year. Normally the BANBC champion will be given this right, but since this is the first year the organizers just had to draw a name out of the hat. Their league campaign has thus far been successful, so you would have to say it's possible the herb-smoking team could do very well in the cup, given this stroke of luck.

The most noticeable news is that the Gelendzhik Dolphins already look like the kind of team that abandon the league to pursue cup glory. They clobbered the Fajr Inferno in six games, which, along with the Dyurtyuli Yellow Jackets' dispatching of the Gelendzhik Unicorns, was the shortest series of the round. All this along the backdrop of having been terrible in the league thus far.

Elsewhere, the Mount Nussizhadani Ice Lions and Pkethat Hevnaje Nighthawks traded blows until the 'hawks pulled away, the Gvardeysk Paladins surprisingly put out the Urajbina Purple Frogs, and the Pkethat Šede Quasars made it difficult for the Dyurtyuli Orange Berets, but ultimately the better side went through.

The teams in the quarterfinals of the cup will thus be: the Juvapanam Jamaicans, the Pkethat Hevnaje Nighthawks, the Gvardeysk Paladins, the Dyurtyuli Orange Berets, the Dyurtyuli Internationals, the Mahathu Zebras, the Dyurtyuli Yellow Jackets, and the Gelendzhik Dolphins. Who's got money on a Dyurtyuli team winning the cup? Me me me!

15 Dolphins 28 9 19 1896 2122 −226

Halfway through the league season and the cream seems to be rising to the top. The Dyurtyuli Orange Berets have become a dominant force in the league, with starting national team power forward Buddhagupta Minakhši proving himself to be perhaps the best player in the country. Magnus Dufresne, the easily recognizable Cotdelapomais manager of Yastrabi, has been seen frequenting the Orange Berets' games as the club hurtle towards a possible title in the first-ever BANBC season.

Included in the small triad of clubs that have a shot at stopping the Orange Berets are: the Gelendzhik Greyhounds, the Juvapanam Jamaicans, and the Urajbina Purple Frogs. The Greyhounds continue with their relentless defensive dominance (with guard Nursultan Fibingerov leading the league in steals), and seem to have improved offensively over the second quarter of the year, the Jamaicans continue with their high-octane, free-scoring offensive style as they gain popularity thanks to their zany marketing ploys, and the Purple Frogs continue to show mental fortitude by hanging around in close matches.

Nearer to the bottom, the Pkethat Šede Quasars seem to have sorted out enough of their problems that they're no longer thought of as the worst team in the league. The Mount Nussizhabani Ice Lions seem to be wilting, their fan base up on the ski slopes evidently being too small. The Fajr Inferno look to an atrocious team, sporting the worst defense in the league (they've got Zhevassi ZL to root for though, so no one feels sorry for them). And the Gelendzhik Dolphins are... still the worst side overall. Even though they're still alive in the cup, they've still been terrible in the league.

GAME 8
Dolphins 74–77 Jamaicans (Jamaicans win series 5 games to 3)

The quarterfinals are over. Perhaps the shock result of the round was the Gvardeysk Paladins besting a strong Mahathu Zebras team. Remarkably, the Zebras were two games up after beating the Paladins twice on the road, and yet the maroon-and-yellow-clad side bounced back to win five straight and comprehensively progress to the semifinals.

Meanwhile, in an all-Dyurtyuli matchup, the Orange Berets and the Yellow Jackets squared off in a not-so-close tie, with Buddhagupta Minakhši's team still looking like the classiest side in the BANBC. On paper, at least. Also, the Gelendzhik Dolphins put up a good fight, but the Juvapanam Jamaicans were just too good in the end. Finally, the Dyurtyuli Internationals found their form late in the series as they brushed aside the Pkethat Hevnaje Nighthawks.

So, you ask: what are the semifinal matchups? Here's the draw... the Orange Berets get the Jamaicans, leaving the Internationals to get the Paladins. You'd have to feel that the winner of the former tie will be the favorite in the cup final series.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

SEASON 1, PART 3

---BANBC Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Greyhounds 42 25 17 3157 3048 +109
2 Purple Frogs 42 24 18 3214 3106 +108
3 Jamaicans 42 23 19 3345 3199 +146
4 Archers 42 23 19 3344 3317 +27
5 Orange Berets 42 22 20 3150 3111 +39
6 Ice Lions 42 22 20 3275 3287 −12
7 Quasars 42 21 21 3270 3275 −5
8 Nighthawks 42 21 21 3145 3123 +22
9 Internationals 42 21 21 3233 3298 −65
10 Zebras 42 21 21 3175 3182 −7
11 Yellow Jackets 42 20 22 3305 3280 +25
12 Paladins 42 20 22 3133 3209 −76
13 Unicorns 42 18 24 3226 3236 −10
14 Inferno 42 17 25 3232 3370 −138
15 Dolphins 42 17 25 3005 3168 −163

Whoa! Catastrophe for the Dyurtyuli Orange Berets, who won just a paltry four of fifteen in the third quarter of the year, sinking down to fifth place, well adrift of the top two. They looked invincible over the first part of the year, but evidently their success was merely a flash in the pan.

The Gelendzhik Greyhounds, meanwhile, while not looking fantastic, have continued with their solid defensive tactics, allowing opponents just 72.6 points per game, a stingy statistic. The 'hounds have done well enough to pull away at the top, though they are only clear by one game.

Immediately behind are the Urajbina Purple Frogs, who are clearly not out of the picture after impressing early in the season but then declining in form. Anastasiy Yuran appears to be one of the better forwards in the league, as he is both the Purple Frogs' top scorer and top rebounder.

More hilarity from the Fajr Inferno and the Gelendzhik Dolphins down at the bottom, clearly the worst two teams in the BANBC. The Gelendzhik Unicorns are one win ahead of those two, but other than that no one matches those two for being terrible at basketball.

Notice that the Mahathu Zebras, class of the league after a quarter of the year, have now sunk to a lowly tenth, boasting no more than a .500 record. Too bad from a team that has quite a lot of fans over there in the nation's capital.

And... hmm... anything else to point out? I guess there's a bunch of teams that could have outside shots at the league playoff spots (AKA first and second place)... the Juvapanam Jamaicans and the Zanduznyy Archers are certainly not out of it, given that they have strong shooters on both squads (the Jamaicans have been fouled more than any other team and the Archers lead the league in three-pointers). And the Mount Nussizhabani Ice Lions had a very strong third of the season, winning ten of fifteen and climbing up into sixth, which doesn't sound that great, but bear in mind that's only three games shy of the Greyhounds, such is the parity in the league.

Okay... next time you tune in for results in the Federation's new top-level basketball league, the regular season will be over!

Paladins 77–88 Internationals (Internationals lead series 2 games to 1)

GAME 4
Jamaicans 73–80 Orange Berets (Orange Berets lead series 3 games to 1)
Paladins 67–77 Internationals (Internationals lead series 3 games to 1)

GAME 5
Orange Berets 74–84 Jamaicans (Orange Berets lead series 3 games to 2)
Internationals 84–96 Paladins (Internationals lead series 3 games to 2)

GAME 6
Orange Berets 69–96 Jamaicans (Series tied at 3 games apiece)
Internationals 72–79 Paladins (Series tied at 3 games apiece)

GAME 7
Jamaicans 83–84 Orange Berets (Orange Berets lead series 4 games to 3)

GAME 8
Jamaicans 83–67 Orange Berets (Series tied at 4 games apiece)
Paladins 60–79 Internationals (Series tied at 4 games apiece)

GAME 9
Orange Berets 60–92 Jamaicans (Jamaicans win series 5 games to 4)
Internationals 83–74 Paladins (Internationals win series 5 games to 4)

Well, that was exciting. Both cup semifinal ties went to Game 9, leading to much excitement for the whole nation to watch.

In the first semifinal, the Jamaicans trailed the Orange Berets by two games at two points during the series, but in the end they rebounded. The odd thing about the series was that, despite going the distance in terms of length, none of the individual games were that close. When a team won, they won comprehensively. In the end, the powerful and swiftly-passing Jamaicans won more of these said games.

In the other, the Dyurtyuli Internationals were given a real run for their money by the plucky Gvardeysk Paladins. The heavily-favored Internationals should have put things away long before Game 9, but they allowed the Paladins to go on a three-game winning streak that nearly sent the southeastern Kagdaz side through. But the proud Internationals eventually showed their class and put themselves into the cup finals, where they will meet the Jamaicans.

14 Dolphins 56 22 34 4079 4270 −191
15 Inferno 56 20 36 4279 4521 −242

After a weird delay apparently caused by simultaneous lighting problems in every single BANBC arena, the league at last resumed and is now complete. The top two held serve, and though some sides, like the Pkethat Šede Quasars and the Dyurtyuli Internationals, made passionate pushes at the death, the best two sides in the league were the ones who ultimately sent themselves to the League Finals.

Speaking of which...

GAME 1
Purple Frogs 66–62 Greyhounds (Purple Frogs lead series 1 game to 0)

GAME 2
Purple Frogs 75–76 Greyhounds (Series tied at 1 game apiece)

GAME 3
Greyhounds 92–81 Purple Frogs (Greyhounds lead series 2 games to 1)

GAME 4
Greyhounds 85–52 Purple Frogs (Greyhounds lead series 3 games to 1)

GAME 5
Purple Frogs 70–79 Greyhounds (Greyhounds lead series 4 games to 1)

GAME 6
Purple Frogs 66–77 Greyhounds (Greyhounds wins series 5 games to 1)

In a series far shorter than anyone expected, the Gelendzhik Greyhounds lost Game 1 before going on a five-game tear, demolishing the Urajbina Purple Frogs in dramatic fashion. Three of their wins were, miraculously, on the road. The team and its far-right-wing fans now book themselves a ticket to the Ridonkadonk-Bigass-Mega-Championship Series, where they will meet either the Juvapanam Jamaicans or the Dyurtyuli Internationals, who are about to fight it out in the Cup Finals. Stay tuned for the results of that series!

NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

SEASON 1, CUP FINALS

GAME 1
Jamaicans 69–84 Internationals (Internationals lead series 1 game to 0)

GAME 2
Jamaicans 62–75 Internationals (Internationals lead series 2 games to 0)

GAME 3

GAME 7
Internationals 67–84 Jamaicans (Jamaicans lead series 4 games to 3)

GAME 8
Internationals 73–78 Jamaicans (Jamaicans win series 5 games to 3)

To be honest, it was a little hard to enjoy a series where a home team only won once, and it was the Jamaicans in Game 6. 84 points was the highest tally any team scored in any game in the series, meaning that there were really any convincing or interesting performances.

But in the end, the Juvapanam Jamaicans came out on top, and won the first edition of the BANBC Cup. The big thing about that is that they're on their way to the Ridonkadonk-Bigass-Mega-Championship Series to play for the overall title versus the Gelendzhik Greyhounds.

Who, then, will be crowned champion of the Federation? Nursultan Fibingerov's Greyhounds? Or Liberališam Ouashikala's Jamaicans? It's Kagdazka vs. Pazhujebu, conservative vs. liberal, racist neo-nazis vs. ganja-smoking Rastafarians. Looks like we're in for a good one.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

SEASON 1, RIDONKADONK-BIGASS-MEGA-CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

GAME 1
Greyhounds 66–66 Jamaicans (75–77 OT) (Jamaicans lead series 1 game to 0)

GAME 2
Greyhounds 76–91 Jamaicans (Jamaicans lead series 2 games to 0)

GAME 3

Greyhounds 83–76 Jamaicans (Greyhounds lead series 3 games to 2)

GAME 6
Greyhounds 96–95 Jamaicans (Greyhounds lead series 4 games to 2)

GAME 7
Jamaicans 94–71 Greyhounds (Greyhounds lead series 4 games to 3)

GAME 8
Jamaicans 77–66 Greyhounds (Series tied at 4 games apiece)

GAME 9
Greyhounds 61–98 Jamaicans (Jamaicans win series 5 games to 4)

It came down to a critical, all-encompassing Game 9, but in the end the final match of the season wasn't much to write home about. The Jamaicans utterly destroyed their Gelendzhik foes on away turf, and are crowned champions of the Federation. It was a long season for them, filled with ups and downs (you know, all that cliche crap), but if there's one thing we now know, it's that Liberališam Ouashikala needs to be a part of the Kagdazka and Pazhujebu national basketball team, STAT.

Anyway, yay for the city of Juvapanam, since suddenly their football team is terrible. Maybe they can get all razzed about basketball, now. Hopefully not too razzed though, since we still suck at the sport overall.

Next season will undoubtedly be just around the corner, but don't be surprised if the format changes, this turned out a little bit stupid and BetAvalanche.kpz have invested lots of money to make basketball look good, not bad.

5252 is here! The pitches are mowed! The players are fit! The managers are buried in boxes of notes, stats, and computer readings! Get out your scarves, buy those tickets, and obsess over your team! Dress up in your club's colors, get pissed up, and ride around on the monorail causing trouble with your mates! The season is just days away from starting, but we still have no idea who will win! Chrétien's FKM? Zagorinski's Gimnasia? Ja's Zhevassi? No one knows! Can you handle the tension?!?!?!?!?!

DON'T BLAME US IF YOU HAVE A STROKE! WEEKS 1-3 AWAIT YOU!

Matchday 1

The Gypsies and the Galacticos both got the year started with nice victories. It was a rude welcome back to the First Division for Meteoriti; Gimnasia unveiled their new star striker Chalia Sajid and she promptly scored a hat trick in a rout of the Meteorites. Meanwhile, Zhevassi made the long trip to Dyurtyuli but had no trouble with the cold in the nation's largest city, downing Angels two one. World champions FKM, however, stumbled in the second half and ended up dropping all three points to visiting Vulkan after Sapano and Andrea stole goals ten minutes away from full time. The Peoples' Club still have plenty of time to recover, though. Urnabhi, Juvapanam, Krevetka, and Urajbina all won as well.

Gimnasia 3–0 Meteoriti
Raktaghav Hathi 2–2 Vezhidrupa
Angels 1–2 Zhevassi
FKM 1–2 Vulkan
Iguani 1–3 Urnabhi
Therakham 1–2 Juvapanam
Krevetka 2–0 Nekromanti
Urajbina 1–0 Yastrabi

Matchday 2

Zhevassi hosting FKM was easily the marquee matchup of the season's second weekend, and it lived up to its billing. The Blue and Orange dominated the first half, taking the lead through an Albornos penalty (well-won after debutant Hridayaja Durai used a lovely move to dodge Blanc-Senac). But the People's Club avoided a nightmare two-loss start to the year by collecting themselves and hammering away in the final forty-five until Malgor finally equalized. All this while Chalia Sajid failed to continue her rampant form against her beloved former team as part of Gimnasia's bore draw with Hathi. So none of the league's best three sides have perfect records, while Urajbina, Urnabhi, and Vulkan do.

Meteoriti 0–3 Yastrabi
Nekromanti 3–4 Urajbina
Juvapanam 1–1 Krevetka
Urnabhi 4–2 Therakham
Vulkan 3–1 Iguani
Zhevassi 1–1 FKM
Vezhidrupa 0–2 Angels
Gimnasia 0–0 Raktaghav Hathi

Matchday 3

Oh, they've done it again! Remember the Iguani-Zhevassi fixture last season? One nil to the Iguanas, and Zhevassi's quest for the First Division crown ended in abject shame. This was supposed to be their shot at revenge, instead the eggplant-and-silver-clad team erased a two goal deficit and upset the giants again. Meanwhile, FKM greedily collected three much-needed points from useless Vezhidrupa, Gimnasia outplayed Angels on an unusually chilly night in Mahathu, Krevetka slaughtered Urnabhi, and Mikhail Drygin's scrappy, 3rd minute tap-in was the difference as Nekromanti hung on for dear life in their shock defeat of Yastrabi. None of the First Division's third-weekend ties quite lived up to the Rahish Bay Derby, though. New manager Maksim Astafyev has got the Yellow, Red, and Blue off to a cracking start, and none of their three victories felt better than the one they grabbed this week after Aqhorassia Bhara's blasted cross/shot beat Sonia Fuentes from a tight angle in the 85th minute. The goal not only humiliated their bitter enemies Juvapanam, but sent Urajbina two points clear at the top of the table. Krevetka are the next up (though their schedule has been pretty weak so far), even with strong-looking Gimnasia. Then there's a big clump that's almost impossible to sort through, along with a predictable bottom two in Meteoriti and Vezhidrupa.

Raktaghav Hathi 1–1 Meteoriti
Angels 0–1 Gimnasia
FKM 3–0 Vezhidrupa
Iguani 4–3 Zhevassi
Therakham 3–0 Vulkan
Krevetka 5–1 Urnabhi
Urajbina 1–0 Juvapanam
Yastrabi 0–1 Nekromanti

YELLOW, RED, AND BLUE IN CONTROL! IS THE TITLE WITHIN REACH?

Image

BOW DOWN BEFORE THE RISING GIANT OF URAJBINA!

Try not to spew chunks all over your roommate's abstract art collection, but believe it or not we're already three matchdays into the year! OH MY GOD! It's gone by so fast! Just think, after just twenty seven short weekends more, we'll be crowning a champion! Could it be your club that raises the trophy? Maybe, if your club is Urajbina, who are already two points clear of everyone else! But Gimnasia aren't far behind! Okay, here we go! Put your big boy and big girl pants on, three more matchdays are coming right up!

I'M SO NERVOUS THAT I THINK I MIGHT HAVE TETANUS!

Matchday 4

What a great weekend for home sides! The only fixture of the matchday that did not result in a full three points for the hosts was Meteoriti's match against Nekromanti, but the White and Blue left the pitch feeling like they'd won, as the Necromancers had been in front by two goals, but Anton Zimyatov collected a brace in the final ten minutes to save his Gelendzhik side from a loss. Meanwhile, Vulkan pushed themselves into the top three by crushing Krevetka, Juvapanam made it up to fifth after beating slumping Yastrabi, Zhevassi squeaked past Therakham to stay in the top half of the table, Vezhidrupa lept out of the relegation zone by downing Iguani, Raktaghav Hathi acquired their first non-draw result of the year by recovering from a two-goal deficit to beat Angels, and Urajbina allowed Urnabhi to score early and then park the bus as Medworth-managed sides do so well. The match of the week, however, was always going to be Gimnasia versus FKM. The third of three matches to be played in Gelendzhik this weekend, the atmosphere inside Gelendzhik Stadion was electric. A draw was the result expected by pundits, but the brave Gypsies stuck to Zagorinski's game plan (put your boot on the throat of the champions and never let up) and emerged with full pointage. Chalia Sajid continues her superb form with new club, as she assisted for Filipov's goal (Gimnasia's first) and scored the 79th minute nail in the Peoples' Club's coffin herself.

Meteoriti 2–2 Nekromanti
Juvapanam 1–0 Yastrabi
Urnabhi 1–0 Urajbina
Vulkan 6–0 Krevetka
Zhevassi 1–0 Therakham
Vezhidrupa 2–0 Iguani
Gimnasia 2–0 FKM
Raktaghav Hathi 3–2 Angels

Matchday 5

With two matches at the Ice Cube this weekend, somebody had to play early in a Friday night game. Angels' contest with Meteoriti drew the short straw, but the hosts drew an even shorter one by allowing Meteoriti to comprehensively outplay them for most of the match. Boris Timriz's outfit are now clear of the drop after winning their first match back in the top flight. FKM got a desperately needed victory after Unzueta scored a beauty in stoppage time to defeat Hathi, leaders Gimnasia kept up the pace by brushing Iguani aside, Therakham predictably beat Vezhidrupa in one of the three Mahathu derbies, Zhevassi continued their unremarkable start to the season by seeing out a dull draw versus Krevetka, and Urajbina got back on track by defeating Vulkan at the Oberlander'ajat. Perhaps the most striking result of the weekend, however, was the late game: Juvapanam's defense looked wobbly, but losing Sartelli and Qaavigaaq seemed irrelevant as they tore up Nekromanti's defense for four goals. The away victory pushed the Invincibles (who have looked quite vincible in recent years) into a startling third place.

Angels 0–1 Meteoriti
FKM 1–0 Raktaghav Hathi
Iguani 0–2 Gimnasia
Therakham 2–0 Vezhidrupa
Krevetka 0–0 Zhevassi
Urajbina 2–1 Vulkan
Yastrabi 4–3 Urnabhi
Nekromanti 2–4 Juvapanam

Matchday 6

Oh hey, look, Juvapanam suck again. The Sky and Silver were absolutely woeful as they allowed the home side (Meteoriti) to thoroughly obliterate them. A late consolation goal made the result look slightly closer than it actually was. The Meteorites, for their trouble, are now undefeated in their last four matches and have ventured into an admirable tenth place. Urnabhi, who look to be the First Division's least predictable side, utterly massacred Nekromanti at home on a Saturday morning, while Raktaghav Hathi similarly crushed their guests, last-place Iguani, in a Sunday night nine-goal barn-burner, all in all making for a superb weekend of football at the Emuzhezh Stidiyama. Yastrabi could have drawn level with Vulkan with a victory at the Yuzhniy Veter Stadion, but in the end were lucky to get so much as a draw, Krevetka barely managed a win over Vezhidrupa, and at the Praça de Prata FKM dealt Angels their fourth consecutive loss. All eyes were on the Fajr Island Derby, as for the first time in a long while both Zhevassi and Urajbina are in the top half and the result was going to be crucial. As if the gods were on the side of the Galacticos, a torrential rain began to pour in roughly the 15th minute and didn't let up until Omelchenko scored in the 68th. Zhevassi have clawed their way into fourth place. But nobody is anywhere near the leaders Gimnasia at the moment, who remained unbeaten after dashing Therakham's hopes of an equalizer with Barrenechea's first goal for the Gypsies (the home side's third of the day). The victory pushed Gimnasia four points clear of Urajbina and Urnabhi, who are tied for second place. The latter sides can hardly feel comfortable, however, just three points separate them from the ninth-placed side, such is the clumping going on in the middle of the table. Zhevassi, Vulkan, and FKM are all breathing down their necks.

Meteoriti 3–1 Juvapanam
Urnabhi 5–0 Nekromanti
Vulkan 1–1 Yastrabi
Zhevassi 1–0 Urajbina
Vezhidrupa 0–1 Krevetka
Gimnasia 3–1 Therakham
Raktaghav Hathi 6–3 Iguani
Angels 1–3 FKM

DOES THIS MAN LOOK LIKE A TITLE-WINNING MANAGER TO YOU?

Image

IF YOU SAID NO, THEN YOU'RE A DUMBASS!

Yes, it's true, the season's almost over already. (And of course by "almost over already" we mean one fifth complete.) One quite look at the table tells you everything you need to know: Zivan Zagorinski's Gimnasia are running away with the First Division crown. I mean, four points clear? They may as well have had every player on each of the other fifteen teams doused in lighter fluid and dropped into a volcano. No way anybody's getting near the Gypsies! Unless... no... it couldn't happen... well... maybe... if by some miracle Gimnasia actually... lost a few games... then someone else might win the First Division!

WE JUST BLEW YOUR MIND! HOPEFULLY YOU TOOK YOUR ASTHMA MEDICATION!

Matchday 7

You know, FKM haven't actually been that bad this year! Going into the year's seventh weekend, it was easily to be all negative and say, 'oh, psh, look they're in seventh.' But take a look at all the teams the People's Club dropped points to: Vulkan, Zhevassi, and Gimnasia. Pretty tough opposition. And the champions proved that they could steal beat the tar out of lesser sides by eviscerating Meteoriti for six goals. Angels, meanwhile, look a complete mess as they have sunk to LAST in the league by losing to a terrible Iguani outfit. An Urajbina victory over Vezhidrupa kept the Yellow, Red, and Blue four points away from the leaders Gimnasia, who won yet again. Elsewhere, Zhevassi sunk down to sixth after failing to see out their contest versus Yastrabi, Urnabhi proved they aren't actually that good by drawing with a pedestrian Juvapanam team, and Vulkan rose to third by defeating Nekromanti in Fatezh with Peregrina Thašighi's two goals.

FKM 6–0 Meteoriti
Iguani 2–0 Angels
Therakham 2–2 Raktaghav Hathi
Krevetka 2–3 Gimnasia
Urajbina 3–0 Vezhidrupa
Yastrabi 1–1 Zhevassi
Nekromanti 0–2 Vulkan
Juvapanam 1–1 Urnabhi

Matchday 8

What is it about the Mahathu Derby that causes these insane nine-or-ten-or-eleven goal blisterfests? Seems like at least one Angels-Therakham result every season ends with a boatload of goals having been scored. Whatever the reason, Angels desperately needed the result they got this weekend, as it pried them out of last place (granted, they're still in fourteenth, which is still the relegation zone). Anyway, COUGH*rhtaboijhr*COUGH sorry I just spilled 452-degree coffee all over my chest, I'm so surprised by Meteoriti winning AGAIN. Where are they now? Still tenth? Jesus, it's like a 74-year-old woman giving birth; it's just not natural. So with Urnabhi showing their true (AKA crappy) colors, that means Hathi are going to start winning, right? WRO- wait. Right, actually. The Red Elephants beat Krevetka pretty handily and moved into fifth. FKM have now won four in a row and are making up for their rocky start to the year in a big hurry. Iguani somehow kept it close, though. Okay, let's face it: the fixture that everybody was eager to see was Gimnasia versus Urajbina. First place versus second place! So of course it was a big disappointment... if you are disappointed by lots and lots of goals! Sajid and Barrenechea scored in the 30th and 36th minutes respectively to see their home side into the locker rooms up two nil at half time, but Urajbina came out on fire after the interval. Hallvarðsdóttir scored twice to level the affair going into the final fifteen minutes. However, there wer more heroics to come from the plucky teal-clad Gypsies. Jujazhedhi scored a screamer from twenty-three yards in the 79th minute and Barrenechea got his second, a well-curled free kick effort, in the 88th to ice the victory and send his side six points clear at the top.

Meteoriti 3–2 Urnabhi
Vulkan 1–0 Juvapanam
Zhevassi 0–0 Nekromanti
Vezhidrupa 1–4 Yastrabi
Gimnasia 4–2 Urajbina
Raktaghav Hathi 3–1 Krevetka
Angels 6–4 Therakham
FKM 2–1 Iguani

Matchday 9

Every time Iguani wins it makes us angry, mostly because we can't figure out where the hell the hat they're pulling these rabbits from is located. Six to two has them up in twelfth, while the team they beat, Meteoriti, look no worse for wear and maintain tenth. Meanwhile, Therakham got absolutely crushed in Mahathu as the champions won their fifth straight. The Terrors now find themselves in fifteen place, whereas FKM rest in third (they are technically tied for second, but Vulkan have a head-to-head tiebreaker on them). Speaking of which, that's three wins in a row for the Burgundy, who sent the once-surging Spiders tumbling down into sixth. Krevetka and Angels played out a nil-nil draw, a result that both sides thoroughly deserve at the moment (and we don't mean that in a good way). Those two are in eighth and fourteenth respectively. Urajbina got back on the right track by coming back from a goal down at the Oberlander'ajat Stidiyama to obtain three points from guests Raktaghav Hathi and preserve fourth place (the Red Elephants, meanwhile, slip a spot into seventh). In a grotesquely unattractive relegation-off, Nekromanti moved into twelfth by sending Vezhidrupa into last win a two one win. The same scoreline favored the Galacticos in the Sky Blue Derby (securing fifth for Zhevassi and eleventh for Juvapanam) and the Gypsies in the Second and First Place Teams in 5250 Derby (okay, that's not a real derby, but we couldn't think of anything else to call Yastrabi versus Gimnasia). The Hawks will have to be comfortable with ninth, whereas the Teal and Wisteria maintain a six-point advantage over their nearest opposition at the top of the table. Oh, one more thing: if you want to see something freaking hilarious, take a gander at the bottom three teams in the First Division right now. Notice anything they all have in common? A common city, perhaps? HAHAHA MAHATHU SUCKS!

Iguani 6–2 Meteoriti
Therakham 0–5 FKM
Krevetka 0–0 Angels
Urajbina 2–1 Raktaghav Hathi
Yastrabi 1–2 Gimnasia
Nekromanti 2–1 Vezhidrupa

CAN ANYONE OR ANYTHING STOP GIMNASIA?

Image

MAYBE A BUCKET FULL OF STRYCHNINE IN A TEAM WATER COOLER!

Don't get any ideas, Zhevassi fans. It's not worth it. Trust us, we already looked into it. The legal bills are just astounding. Anyway, good job, reader! You've wisely purchased this edition of Pazhujebi Sport. Some people (AKA dipshits) would have been turned off by a headline suggesting the poisoning of professional footballers (others by the shameless use of the expletive 'dipshit'... twice), but obviously you know a quality publication when you see one. Seriously though, Gimnasia are six points clear at the top of the table, and the next three weekends have them facing off against pretty lousy opposition. Odds are pretty long that they'll slip out of the top spot, but hey, long odds are made to be laughed at, right?

FIRST DIVISION TOO EXCITING! FANS SOILING PANTS AROUND NATION!

Matchday 10

Embarassment! Those are the words printed on the front pages of the Zahuj Peninsula's premier publications, as wee Urnabhi shocked their beloved Zhevassi one goal to nothing at the Graha'ajat. The loss moves the Blue and Orange down into sixth, while Urnabhi leap them and slot into fifth. Meanwhile, the first New Gelendzhik Derby for a long while ended one all, which was probably a fair result since both goals came from poorly refereed penalty decisions. Vulkan relinquished control of second place because of the result, however, since FKM stole a winner from Krevetka late, moving into the runners-up position themselves. Urajbina somehow managed to stay in the top five, which is quite hilarious since they lost to the Improv Comedians (less commonly known as Angels) by a scoreline of three to two, with Torbinsky scoring twice and Abouto scoring once. Finally, the teal and wisteria leaders stayed six points clear by coming back from a goal down to best Nekromanti, with the winner coming from a Goren Barrenechea tap-in in the 73rd minute after Sajid rattled a first-time shot off the bar and Filipov somewhat hilariously missed an easy header.

Meteoriti 1–1 Vulkan
Zhevassi 0–1 Urnabhi
Vezhidrupa 0–0 Juvapanam
Gimnasia 2–1 Nekromanti
Raktaghav Hathi 1–1 Yastrabi
Angels 3–2 Urajbina
FKM 1–0 Krevetka
Iguani 0–2 Therakham

Matchday 11

Looks like the Terrors have finally got their act together. Two weeks earlier they were in the bottom three, but two comfortable victories have driven them into eleventh. Which still isn't anything to write to your mother about, especially given that Therakham were runners-up last season, but meh. Anyway, Iguani continue to be infuriatingly unpredictable; two weeks after trampling Meteoriti six-two, they've been comprehensively beaten by Therakham and Krevetka. It's back into the relegation dogfight for them. Yet another win for FKM (isn't that like seven in a row now?) who don't seem ready to give up the chase yet. Urajbina were the victims. The Red Elephants marched into the top five with a triumphant clobbering of Nekromanti, good for them. And it's great news for neutrals: the title chase got a bit more interesting when Juvapanam held the Gypsies to a goalless draw. Nothing to see here, it was boring. What wasn't boring was the match they played in southern Gelendzhik on Sunday night: Vulkan dealt Zhevassi their second defeat in a row! Lucifer Andrea opened the scoring by turning Pete Walker with surprising ease in the penalty area and simply blasting one past Gran Sultano, and sunk the Galacticos' battleship in the second half by burying a header off a quality Pavel Vengerov free kick. The result sees the Volcano stay just two points behind second-place FKM and relegates Zhevassi to SEVENTH. Shrieeeeek! What's that awful sound! Must be the executioner sharpening the axe; Nemešiabhi Ja is toast.

Therakham 3–0 Meteoriti
Krevetka 1–0 Iguani
Urajbina 0–2 FKM
Yastrabi 1–2 Angels
Nekromanti 0–4 Raktaghav Hathi
Juvapanam 0–0 Gimnasia
Urnabhi 2–2 Vezhidrupa
Vulkan 2–0 Zhevassi

Matchday 12

Fuck me, Zhevassi are on a three game winless streak! How the H-E-double-hockey-sticks did that happen? Like we said, it might be time for all you football fans out there to start selling your commemorative Nemešiabhi Ja beer coasters, 'cuz that guy is outta here. The Galacticos remain in seventh, while the team responsible for the nil-nil result, Meteoriti, stay momentarily safe from the drop. (The teams in the relegation zone, incidentally, are Iguani, Nekromanti, and Vezhidrupa. None scored a goal this weekend.) Therakham, meanwhile, have rescued their season by winning three in a row and rocketing into eighth. Raktaghav Hathi are also unbeaten in three and retain fifth place, three points clear of city rivals Urnabhi and titans Zhevassi (they hammered a hopeless Juvapanam, who haven't scored in three weeks). Urajbina won a match they'd have felt like idiots if they'd lost (a fixture with Iguani) and thereby stayed a step ahead of Hathi in fourth. FKM at last had their win streak broken; Yastrabi came to the CMZ and messed everything up when Osya Instinsky let fly a bending beast from twenty-eight yards in the 51st minute, beating René Wright-Efans and giving Vulkan the chance to reclaim second place. The Burgundy didn't win pretty, but they won just the same and left Namhanku Aviation Field, home of last place Vezhidrupa, with all three points. They are now a point ahead of FKM in the table. Gimnasia, meanwhile, were the beneficiaries of Chalia Sajid's determination to make an example her old team's arch-enemy (she used to play for Raktaghav Hathi, who hate Urnabhi). Needless to say, she succeeded, scoring once and assisting twice to help her side take advantage of FKM's slip-up. (Player of the Year honors are on the way if she keeps this up.) Once again, Gimnasia are six points clear at the top of the KPFA League First Division.

Meteoriti 0–0 Zhevassi
Vezhidrupa 0–1 Vulkan
Gimnasia 3–0 Urnabhi
Raktaghav Hathi 3–0 Juvapanam
Angels 0–0 Nekromanti
FKM 0–1 Yastrabi

RIOT POLICE HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED! HUGE DERBY MATCHES AHEAD!

Matchday 13

There it is, ladies and gentlemen! Gimnasia's first loss of the year, administered by the arch-enemies Vulkan. The many burgundy-clad supporters groups in attendance at Yuzhniy Veter Stadion were in full voice, harassing their cross-town 'friends' from the opening whistle. At first it looked as though the table-topping Gypsies would come away from the hostile environment with something, as Ole Berghaus opened the proceedings in the 36th minute by stretching for a Ratin Beenum ground cross. But Vulkan were having none of it, and pounded away until Andrea at last found an equalizer ten minutes after half time. With the scores level, everybody and your grandmother would have put money on a draw, but the home side found a winner in the 86th minute, against the run of play, when Pavel Vengerov was set loose on Arellano in a one-on-one and finished with aplomb. And... then a bunch of other stuff happened elsewhere in the league, most of which was boring. Not the Emuzhezh Derby, we guess... Urnabhi won to draw level on points with their stadium-mates... looks like one of those two is going to end up in the Globe Cup spots. Also, FKM hammered Nekroman- HA! HAHAHAHA! No they didn't! With Gimnasia losing, they had a gilt-edged opportunity to close the gap, and yet they were very much the lesser side this weekend against an inspired Nekromanti. Gimnasia, Vulkan, FKM, Urajbina, and Urnabhi in positions one through five after thirteen weeks.

Krevetka 1–0 Meteoriti
Urajbina 1–2 Therakham
Yastrabi 0–1 Iguani
Nekromanti 2–2 FKM
Juvapanam 0–2 Angels
Urnabhi 2–1 Raktaghav Hathi
Vulkan 2–1 Gimnasia
Zhevassi 2–1 Vezhidrupa

Matchday 14

Having got that 'first loss of the season' monkey off their backs, the Gypsies simply went right back to what they've been doing all year. But it was no ordinary match they were contesting this time around: Gimnasia were paired with Zhevassi for their week fourteen fixture. The Derby of the Federation was hotly contested, as it always is (there's no love lost between these two sides, belligerents in a proxy war between Kagdazka and Pazhujebu), but the result wasn't even close this time around, and no one expected it to be. Zhevassi put up a good fight, but they've been desperately disappointing this year (actually, they've been desperately disappointing this decade) and a two nil loss was what they deserved in the end. Both goals came from Ratin Beenum. Meanwhile, Vulkan put on a real show. Shockingly three-nil down to Raktaghav Hathi at half time, the Volcano spouted to life in the second half, scoring three goals in the last eight minutes of the match to level the scoreline in a four-all thriller. Both Taras Strogolev and Šudhan Chahachim, managers of Hathi and Vulkan respectively, told the press afterwards that it was one of the most exciting football matches they'd ever seen. Hey, remember how FKM were on a seven-match winning streak? And then it ended, oh, three weeks ago? Guess what? Evidently someone in the CMZ decided a three-match winless streak would be a good chaser to a seven-match winning streak. They lost (AT HOME) to a terrible Juvapanam outfit dangling precariously above the drop. Nothing like a wounded animal, as they say. Anyway, Gimnasia are still in first, Vulkan are still in second, FKM are still in third, and then there's a bigass clump for the other spots.

Meteoriti 2–1 Vezhidrupa
Gimnasia 2–0 Zhevassi
Raktaghav Hathi 4–4 Vulkan
Angels 0–0 Urnabhi
FKM 1–2 Juvapanam
Iguani 1–0 Nekromanti
Therakham 1–2 Yastrabi
Krevetka 0–0 Urajbina

Matchday 15

Worst versus first should have been a foregone conclusion, but instead wee little Vezhidrupa stole two points from powerful Gimnasia by grinding out a scoreless draw at Namhanku Aviation Field in Mahathu. This isn't great news for the Gypsies, since Vulkan wiped the floor with Angels back in Gelendzhik and moved themselves to within three points of the leaders. (Remember that head-to-head is the first tiebreaker in the KPFA League First Division, so Vulkan are a win and a Gimnasia loss away from first place.) FKM, meanwhile, continued their horrible form by allowing Urnabhi to slap the door shut for the weekend's other nil-nil draw. (Somehow, they're still in third, though Zhevassi closed the gap with a win over Raktaghav Hathi.) Not to say goals couldn't be found, of course; Yastrabi and Krevetka played out a seven-goal positive football bonanza which Yastrabi were on the better end of. The Hawks found goals from Širharbidhiku, Instinsky, Proulx, and Spyopolous in the win, which pushes them into eighth. One more thing... did they... really... what the... okay, we just needed to check, and we... okay, let's just check one more time... yeah, it's true! Iguani have won three matches in a row! Granted, their opposition wasn't that great, but still, Yastrabi and Juvapanam were probably better sides than them and yet they won anyway. Well, there you go. A deserved pat on the back for the tiny team from the hippie colony town, who are now resting in eleventh (though they are only two points above the drop).

Urajbina 3–3 Meteoriti
Yastrabi 4–3 Krevetka
Nekromanti 1–2 Therakham
Juvapanam 0–1 Iguani
Urnabhi 0–0 FKM
Vulkan 3–0 Angels
Zhevassi 2–1 Raktaghav Hathi
Vezhidrupa 0–0 Gimnasia

First Division Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Gimnasia 15 11 3 1 28 9 +19 36
2 Vulkan 15 10 3 2 30 14 +16 33
3 FKM 15 8 3 4 28 12 +16 27
4 Zhevassi 15 6 5 4 15 15 0 23
5 Urajbina 15 7 2 6 23 21 +2 23
6 Urnabhi 15 6 4 5 25 23 +2 22
7 Therakham 15 7 1 7 26 27 −1 22
8 Yastrabi 15 6 3 6 23 19 +4 21
9 Raktaghav Hathi 15 5 6 4 32 23 +9 21
10 Krevetka 15 5 4 6 17 20 −3 19
11 Iguani 15 6 0 9 21 28 −7 18
12 Angels 15 5 3 7 19 22 −3 18
13 Meteoriti 15 4 5 6 18 33 −15 17
14 Juvapanam 15 4 4 7 13 19 −6 16
15 Nekromanti 15 2 4 9 14 31 −17 10
16 Vezhidrupa 15 1 4 10 10 26 −16 7

At the halfway point of the year, it appears that it's up to Gelendzhik neighbors Gimnasia and Vulkan to decide the title. FKM are settled in third, looking somewhat comfortable (their four-match winless streak notwithstanding), whereas below them Zhevassi, Urajbina, Urnabhi, Therakham, Yastrabi, and Raktaghav Hathi are all still a victory away from a Globe Cup spot. Krevetka, Iguani, Angels, and Meteoriti make up the lower mid-table clump, just barely clear of the drop. Sitting in the hotseat are Juvapanam and Nekromanti, who theoretically still have a chance to save themselves, and finally, in last place we find Vezhidrupa, who are all but relegated already.

ŠENAPATIAM'AJAT VAHAVI AND SECOND DIVISION NEWS!

You knew this news report would come at some point, fans. You can't pretend away the less interesting parts of football in the Federation. It's like going to a play. No matter how much you pretend that you're at a Michael Bay movie with lots of explosions, there's still a dude in period costume shouting in your face about the degradation of moral fiber. Closing your eyes doesn't change the fact that it SUCKS. But my editor told me he'd make me work the celebrity gossip section for a month if we don't cover this other crap, so we have to.

DON'T WORRY, WE'LL BE BACK TO THE FIRST DIVISION SOONER THAN YOU KNOW IT!

9 Sunaharaghav Thara 16 3 6 7 14 21 −7 15

At the halfway point of the year, a few things jump right out. First, the all-Kagdaz group is a total shitshow. Good luck figuring out what's going on there. Looks like YKY are going to go down, since they're the worst team in the Second Division at the moment. But elsewhere in that group, everybody and their grandmother could do well. Five points separate first from seventh. In that mix are current co-leaders Akademia and PYZ, redneck racists BFZ, the FKM-hating Dynamo; Nautilus, Xenon, and Begemoti aren't out of it.

Second, the all-Pazhujebi group looks slightly more predictable. Pu are well on their way to making it into the history books as they are half a season away from becoming the first team ever to be relegated from the First Division to the third over the course of two seasons. At the top, meanwhile, the stratification is quite logical, with a solid-looking Shadows outfit running the show and strong chasers Bijji, Pkethat Hevnaje, and Xoài Trục Xuất all tied for second place.

The mixed group is a three-way race, with only Iv, K'arasi, and Knoxhaven Football Club looking capable of promotion. All have prolific attacks, and most analysts agree that the Second Division draw did us all a great disservice by putting all three in the same group, as only one can go up. One of Seraya Lisitsa and Sunaharaghav Thara should go down.

HANG ON, BABY! JUST A TINY BIT MORE BOREDOM!

Šenapatiam'ajat Vahavi Second Round (selected matches)

Yastrabi 1–0 Angels
Begemoti 1–0 Meteoriti
Krevetka 4–1 Seraya Lisitsa
Zholtyi Koala 4–2 Nautilus
FKM 6–1 Xenon

These five matches were the only ones that did not involve Third Division (or lower) sides, and since we can't be bothered to keep track of those teams, we'll just give you the pertinent ones. The draw gave us a tragically early showdown between the two Dyurtyuli giants Yastrabi and Angels, who share the Ice Cube between them. Oh well, at least it was a fantastic atmosphere. Enough to make up for the dreary match, though? Egh. Meanwhile, Begemoti took advantage of the draw dragging Meteoriti up north, where they swept aside Boris Timriz's outfit. Krevetka slaughtered Seraya Lisitsa, Zholtyi Koala won an exciting match versus Nautilus, and FKM crushed a hapless Xenon (who, for their trouble, look like they might not return to the First Division for a long, long time).

Šenapatiam'ajat Vahavi Third Round

Akademia 2–2 Knoxhaven FC
Knoxhaven FC 6–0 Akademia (Knoxhaven FC 8-2 on aggregate)

Yastrabi 0–2 Gimnasia
Gimnasia 1–1 Yastrabi (Gimnasia 3-1 on aggregate)

Begemoti 0–3 Vulkan
Vulkan 5–0 Begemoti (Vulkan 8-0 on aggregate)

Iguani 1–1 Nekromanti
Nekromanti 3–6 Iguani (Iguani 7-4 on aggregate)

Krevetka 2–5 FKM
FKM 0–0 Krevetka (FKM 5-2 on aggregate)

Madzhenta Plotniki 2–3 Dynamo
Dynamo 1–2 Madzhenta Plotniki (Tied 4-4 on aggregate, Dynamo on away goals)

PYZ 1–0 Zholtyi Koala
Zholtyi Koala 2–2 PYZ (PYZ 3-2 on aggregate)

Yellowknife Yaks 0–3 BFZ
BFZ 0–2 Yellowknife Yaks (BFZ 3-2 on aggregate)

Okay, we've stopped giving you abridged results. This was the full Third Round, which had some interesting matchups. First of all, Gimnasia and Yastrabi got paired with one another, and while it could have been a close tie, it wasn't. Lazhthuthezha Jujazhedhi and Ole Berghaus scored two goals at the Ice Cube and, having made a mess of their home leg, Yastrabi were always toast from there on out. In another all-First Division showdown, FKM and Krevetka locked horns. Krevetka were drawn the first leg, which always sucks, but it sucks even more when you leak five goals in that first leg, which they did. FKM steamrollered past them into the Fourth Round. Knoxhaven, Vulkan, Iguani, FKM, BFZ, and Dynamo also went through, with the latter involved in a dramatic two-legged confrontation that saw the Yellow and Wisteria go through on the away goals rule.

Šenapatiam'ajat Vahavi Fourth Round

Iguani 5–1 BFZ
BFZ 0–1 Iguani (Iguani 6-1 on aggregate)

PYZ 0–0 Dynamo
Dynamo 2–1 PYZ (Dynamo 2-1 on aggregate)

FKM 7–4 Vulkan
Vulkan 4–2 FKM (FKM 9-8 on aggregate)

Knoxhaven FC 2–1 Gimnasia
Gimnasia 1–0 Knoxhaven FC (Tied 2-2 on aggregate, Gimnasia on away goals)

This is where things finally begin to look up. The KDZ Cup quarterfinals (also known as the Vahavi Fourth Round) saw FKM and Vulkan face off in one of the best cup ties in Federation history. The two sides burned the house down in a seven four shootout in Murmansk that favored the home side before returning to Gelendzhik, where Vulkan were a late goal away from going through on away goals. They almost got it, too, with Lucifer Andrea and Peregrina Thašighi both rattling the crossbar within the final five minutes. In the end, the UICA Champions' Cup holders hung on to progress. Meanwhile, Gimnasia barely clawed past fellow Gelendzhik outfit Knoxhaven on away goals, Dynamo rallied from a goal down in the second leg to get past PYZ, and Iguani beat BFZ senseless in a tie between two sides that could not have been further apart on the political spectrum. Thus, the four Kagdaz sides that will go on to the Šenapatiam'ajat Vahavi quarterfinals are Iguani, Dynamo, FKM, and current holders Gimnasia, where they will be met by four as-yet-unnamed Pazhujebi clubs.
