Re: American Football Super Thread

Postby The Fanboyists » Sat Sep 05, 2009 3:50 pm

Alrighty, here's my two-cents, for now:

NFL - Next week we'll see the Ravens open up with Kansas City; here's hoping the Ravens put together a Super Bowl run this year; I can't stand the Steelers (and their fans) anymore than I could stand Patriots (and their fans) last year. Let's hear it for shutting the defending champs up!

Also, I'm amazed; the Redskins might just make themselves contenders this year because of their good defense; it'll need to be good, though, to pick up all the slack their offense will likely leave them.

I'm calling the Vikings and Dolphins to put together good seasons this year as well.

NCAA - So the best game of week one is coming up: the Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Those Turkey Dudes aka the Hokies. Let's break this matchup down, shall we?

On the one hand, VT has (on paper) an experienced O-Line. However, it is an ACC line, which means that relatively speaking, its decent. On the other... Well, there's Terrance Cody. Cody is a monster on the D-line, and should be mauling VT's line all night. Not gonna be much hope running the ball inside. Then there's Alabama's superb secondary, led by Javier Arenas, who played excellently last year, and is likely to repeat his great performances.

This totals up to a VT offense being shut-down and mauled by the Tide.

Now for offense.

The Tide arguably is the best team still playing power football. Other teams have had success with passing, spread, flexbone, whatever. But nothing trumps a well-played power-i, with a good line (with three reliable, if a little raw, incoming linemen. SEC linemen, by the way) allowing the running game to simply shove the ball down VT's throat. Then over the air, there's Julio Jones, who helps head up Alabama's useful, if secondary-in-nature, passing-game. Alabama's QB, like parts of his line, is a little untested, but looks to be a talented individual. Result?

Tide's offense should be able to gain some good yards on the ground, and might pick up some decent yardage and scores in the air. However, look for the Crimson D to pick up some of the slack here.

I'm calling a Crimson Tide victory by two scores. Probably a TD and a FG, maybe more.

Oh, how about that Boise State game? And Navy, holding their own in their against a much-higher ranked Ohio State?

How about National Championship prospects? I'm saying it'll likely be an SEC team, either Florida (with their amazing offense), Alabama (with their dominating defense), or, possibly, Ole Miss, who surprised people last year with their bowl victory over Texas Tech. If a non-SEC team wins it, it'll likely be Texas, who look about as strong as average (which is quite strong). As usual, I'm fairly USC has been overrated. We'll see.

For my picks for the surprising team with the best shot at a National Championship I choose UNC and Georgia Tech. Remember the days of CJ?

If you wanted to bash UM, it'd be better to point to last year's season: they didn't do terribly in 2007, even though there were 2 or 3 games they should have picked up but didn't. Just because they lost to a shitty team 2 years ago doesn't mean they're always going to be abysmal. Ohio State almost lost to Navy today, but I don't see anyone making a big deal out of that.

When there was a thread about cricket, at least the OP named what the game was.

Perhaps the OP could consider that to most of the civilized world "Notre Dame" means the magnificent gothic cathedral of Chartres, not a bunch of thugs trying to break each others' legs in pursuit of a leather ball.

acttually the balls are often times made of rubber, or plastic.

Our offense still sucks.

I think I'll skip college ball until they rectify this.

I should have just called it a "pigskin" because that sounds sillier. And all sports are silly.

But no, I looked up Wikipedia first, because I just knew that what the silly old ball is made of would seem to someone like a vital aspect of this Serious Business. Wikipedia told me that leather is regulation in "professional and collegiate" football.

So if you know better than Wikipedia, now's your time to give a source. I'm sure it matters to someone ...

***UPDATE***
BYU: 14
Oklahoma: 13

About 3 minutes left  ! Man I love college football.

I just got done watching some major upsets on Youtube from a while back. Appalachain State over Michigan, Stanford over USC, Texas Tech over Texas (not really an upset, but an exciting finish), and my personal favorite considering its the biggest football win for Illinois in my lifetime: Illinois over Ohio State.

Hopefully this game will add another game to history's upsets.

Hangover. Would rather have been asleep. OK now. :D

Do they still use that chain thingy to measure downs? Carbon fibre or kevlar would probably have the same function (not stretching) but the chain was fun.

The NSG (American) Football Megathread

Postby Reploid Productions » Sat Sep 05, 2009 7:23 pm

So it's football season in the States, and many of our users want to talk about the sport; their favorite teams, the outcome of this-or-that game, maybe the latest "so-and-so player did X illegal action!" drama.

So here you go, NSG football fans, a sticky megathread just for you. Like the Obama healthcare reform megathread, this one will be de-stickied once it becomes irrelevant. So probably around the end of the season.

And I know that sports rivalries can get pretty heated, so let's not turn into a bunch of sport hooligans in here, okay? ;)
