Rugby League World Cup VIII Everything Thread

It has been a while since the Rugby League World Cup was last contested. In that time interest in the sport did not wane. It instead grew. A record thirty-six teams will be making the journey to Virabia but, of this field only one will be crowned champion. Will it perhaps be defending champions and no. 1 ranked Sorthern Northland who looks to be the first team to win the tournament twice in a row en route to their third victory. Will it be The Yorozuya, a nation which hosted the tournament long ago but has never managed to take home the crown always falling just short. Could it be RLWC VII hosts Logria who twice have fallen to Virabia in the knockouts. Or perhaps it could be the hosts Virabia who would join Sorthern Northland as the second team to take home the trophy twice. Or maybe it will be a new team which will go the route of the hosts and take home the crown on their very first attempt. No one knows but, in this time of crisis, there is nothing better than some good ol' Thirteens to ease the mind. Something about men tackling eachother over a ball is just so soothing!

IC information

To those who haven't been reading my recent WC storyline, I suggest you do so. It explains why things will be the way they will. Because of the time fluctuations, the majority of mainland Virabia has been barred to any travel that isn't going away from the affected areas. While Vonghurst would be safe, the it would be nearly impossible to get to Vonghurst with out crossing into dangerous territory. Thus, the tournament will be hosted entirely in the state of Brantaland, which because of it's location on the Rushmori mainland has been unaffected by recent events. The downside to this is that Brantaland has much less infrastructure to put on this kind of tournament. The stadiums are small even by Virabi standards and some towns may not have enough space for everyone. Still desperate time call for desperate measures and we'll make do with what we got. For those unfamiliar with the similarities and differences between Brantaland and mainland Virabia allow the below guide to fill you in:

Similarities:
*People are still Vegetarian Pot Smokers
*However, they are notably to the right of most Virabis. Still, if they existed in the US, they would be far left. The prevailing opinion there is just more based on regulation than government control.
* You still can't bring any meat products in
* There is still a strong sense of environmental stewardship
* Rains alot
* Mountains
* Tea is still drunk to an excessive amount
* Advertising is still banned
* Communities still tend to be built in the Virabi way. Lots of nature mixed with artificial things.
* In Virabia we drive on left

Differences:
* People here are less friendly, they still are rather friendly though
* You don't see the heated arguments between strangers in the streets
* The population is almost entirely Anglo or Negro. To the south and west there is a significant Native Rushmori community but, Esperantos are rare. Thus, the language (Esperanto = Spanish in Virabia) appears almost nowhere
* Cuisine tends to be more basic unlike the mainland.
* Cities, towns, villages are much smaller
* Cars are used more than on the mainland. They are still subject to strict emissions standards

Coach's report to the Michael VII team after loss to Saugeais...
"Men, that was not a very great game that we played. At all! That team may be ranked, but they are by no means the better team on the paddock. I was very disappointed by the efforts of our backs here...LETTING A DAMN PROP SCORING A RUNAWAY TRY?! What is this? Sure, some calls may not have gone our way, like our well practiced forward pass technique, but it is not the end of the world. Next game, we might just have to actually pass the ball backwards, however I do not know how well that technique works...We'll just have to wait and see. However, just a single point would have been nice, just to put us on the board, _{and to avoid sincere embarrassment}. But again, not a huge problem, the score was only 17-0, there is so much to improve on! Nonetheless, we are going to win next time, whether the scoreboard says so or not!"

"Rugby" League Team Embarrasses Wolfmanne

Our "Rugby" League team has embarrassed Wolfmanne after being defeated 8 - 2 by other newcomers Darmen. The team, who throughout the majority of the game were in possession of the ball and territory, defeated the "Red Wolves" (in contrast to our Blue Wolves). They didn't even announce the team roster prior to the match! We only managed to, in the last twenty minutes, score two drop goals (worth 1 point in League) to give us a constellation.

The odds for the team even winning one match are -

Joey Barnes threw the paper in the bin before even reading the odds. Gerald Smith was pretty much a Rugby Union dick who only read the rules of Rugby League and did not actually understand the game. Clearly their nation weren't behind for them to win. The team were sitting in a local park, which they loaned from the local council. The team, while they may have no chance, still were representing their nation and their nation should honoured that they are even represented. 17 players stood sitting down in front of their Head Coach. 17 men, with assistant coaches standing behind, were to bare the brunt of a quiet man, who hid his anger when they ended their match.

"Right boys, well done for trying our best; we scored a quarter of what they scored, which is a start" Joey said calmly. Everybody was shocked that he still wasn't angry. "However we want to win; we are being mocked as underdogs; the disgrace of a League hating nation. We must prove to our fellow Wolfmanni that we have the right of bearing the flag of Wolfmanne on our shirt; we must prove that Rugby League is a sport and that we Wolfmanni are still Wolfmanni, despite playing an hated sport!"

Everyone cheered at Barnes' speech. Some semi-professionals, mostly amateurs and one casual player (legally a free agent) might not be able to win the RLWC.

"We are not the worst team in the world; there are worst teams out there, who we could beat; we need to put our minds to it" Barne finished. "Alright boys, training is beginning now. Warm up, run around the park - all 3km of it". Everyone groaned as they stood up.

"Did I hear groaning? Two times". Meanwhile, he would sort out a phone call.

"Hello, is that the Rugby League Board or whatever it's called in this damned country? Yeah this is a Wolfmanne's Joey Barnes. I've sent you the team roster, can you post it? And what about our transport?" Barnes paused as the bureaucrat told him everything. "What do you mean a PRISON TRUCK?"

The two were in a long arguement, which lasted for so long, that the team was forced run another two times.

The Relotian National Rugby League team celebrated a victory in the opening game of the Rugby League World Cup in Virabia. The team beat Mapletish by a score of 10-8. The scores by Relotia were a drop goal by Wilbur Young in the opening stages of the match while Chris Baster put in a major try near the end of the game to put the team up and seal the victory.

The win sparked scenes of celebration in the capital while President Rosenbusch phoned head coach Jeremy Bicketts personally for the big win.

Relotia will play Michael VII on Matchday Two. The team is coming off of a 17-0 beatdown at the hands of Saugeais.

The Federation of Polar Islandstates Rugby League Team

Rugby league is by some way the smaller of the two main rugby disciplines played in the Federation - there isn't even a national league yet - but the fans are keen, and the players passionate.

Style Mod (if it can be changed part way through a tournament, if not, no biggie): +5

Coach's report to Michael VII Rugby League team after 6-7 loss to Relotia
"Yay! I guess...Well we got points this time, but still, a loss nonetheless. But we got the only try! So maybe, just maybe the pass backward technique works. I think we'll test it again next game, and hope for a win, because we need wins to advance, and well not bring shame to the country...So, maybe we should stop being nice to the opposition and let them have time to kick drop goals, 7 of them. So, in retrospect, we shouldn't have let them kick that drop goal on the siren! But, anyway...good game, we got on the board, and now we just have to win. Hopefully..."
