Most of those pictures were a specific juxtoposition of Bush making a particular facial expression with a chimpanzee making a similar expression. Done to imply that Bush...well...kinda looks like a chimp.

Here there's no context to presuppose that Obama's PARTICULAR features resemble anything of the sort. Just the implication that he, and his family, are apes, and not people.

Context, after all, is everything.

Obama's parents are in the picture, too, and similarly depicted as chimpanzees. It's pretty ridiculous to combine that with the caption and not consider it racist.

^ This. I remember seeing two sorts of ape-based jokes with Bush - as NA said, pictures of him making the same facial expressions as chimps, where the joke was, "heh, Bush makes the same facial expressions as chimps," and a picture of him as Curious George, where the joke was "heh, Bush makes the same facial expressions as chimps, and also his name is George." You might reasonably include "and he's kinda dumb" as an implication there, but not "and his entire race is subhuman." Putting a picture of Obama making a normal facial expression on a chimp's body doesn't imply "Obama does something like a chimp." It doesn't imply "heh, there's a famous fictional monkey named Barack." It implies, "har har, just in and of himself, not doing anything in particular, he's basically an animal, not a human."

This.

I think you might have meant "depicting white men as monkeys doesn't have a long racist history". Yes?

No. It's called sarcasm. If you're unfamiliar with the concept perhaps you should read up on it.

While I believe this is popular thought, can you document the history of black men depicted as monkeys?

Bush being presented as a monkey was attacking his intelligence. Not something I approve of, but still legitimate. Portraying Obama- a coloured man- as a monkey is most definitely racially insensitive at the least, and was probably racially motivated.

The same thing as conservitives/an-caps/whatever ideology you identify with to group everyone into a hive-mind?

I'd say very bad racist undertones and although it may not have been ment to be racist if the person didn't see this backfiring then their a moron.

Essentially- I agree with Angleter ;)

There's too much negative history of African Americans being dehumanized by being depicted as monkeys for the cartoon to ever be a good idea. Let alone a political maneuver. Even if the cartoon didn't have racist intentions, it's easily seen as racist to many and the Republican Party member should have been smart enough to see that.

This too is a valid point. A group that has displayed a staggering amount of bigotry and racism does something that could be construed as racist...yeah, presupposing that it's probably racist isn't exactly going out on a fucking limb.

The United States continues to surprise me everyday, delving deeper into craziness. I don't see how editing Obama's family onto the face of chimps can be seen as anything but blatant racism.
