Massive earthquake hits Japan

Looks like Tokyo got hit hard.

Tsunami warnings have been issued in several areas, including Hawaii, so if you happen to be there or on the Asian coast you should probably check and see if you need to evacuate.

I hope all our regional players and mods are okay.

Earthquakes would be a lot of fun for a guy like me if there weren't so many deaths. I suppose a zero death toll is too much to hope for. :(

Oh shit.

Considering Japan's location...

An 8.8? That's worse than Haiti!

Japan has a highly enforced building code though.

The difference is that Japan is a first world nation with great health services and infrastructure.
Their one of the few nations which could react properly to getting hit by a natural disaster.

And this was a relatively deep depth of 20 miles.

EDIT: There is a crap-ton of aftershocks though.

According to another article I read (which also said the quake was 'only' 7.9) there's some pretty serious structural damage in Tokyo. Cell phone pictures of office buildings on fire and all that.

I read it was only 6mi. (10km) depth, but in any event my best wishes go out to everyone in Japan, and coastal communities in the Pacific. Our thoughts are with you tonight...

Fiscally, they'll recover. I just hope their weren't any deaths. :(

I know a lot of people in that specific area - does anyone have a good website to track damage, if such a thing exists? Google isn't giving me anything specific.

I'm watching a tsunami sweep in right now on the news. It looks bad. The poor people. I hope they're OK.

Generally after these events the phone lines will be stuffed and the government will discourage family check ups so people needing emergency services may call. (like people using a cell phone when a leg is pinned beneath a building.)

Some reporting from CNN.

Also, apparently the quake was initially called a 7.9, but later upgraded to 8.8.

It wasn't very near to Tokyo, so that report I read earlier might've been about another city.

And while it's not exactly the time to be laughing, I did have to smile a bit at 'han-shoe.'
