Please answer the following questions about the thing which you intend to compare to slavery.

1. Does it involve you physically being bought and sold for money?

2. Did anyone strip you naked, put you on a block, and force you to stand there while people inspected you to determine how much money you were worth?

3. Did it involve you being violently kidnapped from your home?

4. Has it ever put you in chains?

5. Does it rape you?

6. Does it threaten to kill you if you disobey?

7. How about your family? Does it threaten to kill them?

8. Does it force you to engage in strenuous physical labor for hours on end, and beat you if you so much as try to rest?

9. Does it leave you in constant fear of your life?

10. If you get pregnant, does it take your children away and sell them?

11. Is it almost unimaginably more awful than having to do your pre-algebra homework?

If you answered "no" to all of these questions, congratulations! Your comparison is a ridiculous piece of hyperbole!

slavery [ˈsleɪvərɪ]
n
1. (Law) the state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune
2. the subjection of a person to another person, esp in being forced into work
3. the condition of being subject to some influence or habit
4. (Business / Industrial Relations & HR Terms) work done in harsh conditions for low pay

So in other words, that was cute but dumb.

Anything forced against your will, done w/o your consent, or made to happen via coercion is by definition, slavery.

Mandatory schooling is just like mandatory military service/conscription...

Which, actually, is also slavery.

Oh boo hoo. Someone is making poor kids learn something useful for 8 hours a day. And regardless of what you think about being an autodidact, learning is much easier and more effective when it is guided by a trained educator.

If only we actually learned for those 8 hours. My senior year in high school, I swear the two classes I attended most often were minesweeper and hearts, if you take my meaning.

So show me how being a minor in the public education system makes one in a position where another "has absolute power" over them and controls their "life, liberty and fortune". Show me how mandatory education makes someone subjected to another.

Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Not really, if you pay attention, and somewhat apply yourself you can do well. Plus, at school you can chill with friends, talk to chicks, and play sports and shit. It also teaches social skills and practical skills useful for the real world.

I definitely hated school, in fact I dropped out when I was 16 and got a GED (with a near perfect score, what a great education system I was in). Though I wouldn't go so far to call it slavery, it's not as if the state gains labor or monetary value by students being there, they are actually spending money.

The American school system is a pile of cow shit, but the concept of school itself is still good and in many ways necessary.
