FN60 Service Machinegun (General Purpose)

The following text is taken from the FN60 military operations manual.

Operation of the Weapon: The loading and firing process is as follows. Firstly, lift up the feed cover by the spring located on the top rear of the receiver. If the spring does not work, manual lift is possible by gripping both sides of the feed cover using the manual operations at the rear sides of the feed cover, and pulling upwards. In either scenario the feed cover will pop up. Note: the rear open sight is attached to the front of the feed cover hinge and so will fold forwards when the feed cover is lifted.

Secondly, place the belt into the correct notches in the feed as shown during training. Close the feed cover; it may be necessary for new users of the weapon to give it a slap on the top to ensure it is properly locked. Now, the belt should be fed through the weapon. The loaded belts should be to the left hand side of the weapon and cartridges will feed through into the chamber. The cartridge is now in position to be pushed from the breech into the chamber by the bolt. The empty belts should feed out through the open side of the lower part of the feed cover.

OR; insert a box magazine into the clip below the left hand side belt feed. The FN60 will take all standard FGR magazines, box and drum.

Pull back the charging handle. As the FN60 is an open bolt firearm it is now in the firing position. Flip off the safety on the trigger guard. Pushing forwards engages firing; pulling the switch towards the shooter engages safety. There is only one firing mode: fully automatic. The bolt will move forwards and the primer will begin to ignite the cartridge as it is pushed from the breech into the chamber. As the FN60s bolt is of a telescope manufacture, the greater mass of the bolt is now forward of the breech.

The reason for the telescope design should be explained. In the FN60, a good portion of the bolt is ahead of the breech and under the chamber in the lower half of the front-receiver. This allows the bolt to be heavy enough to chamber the next round and to positively extract the previous without requiring the bolt to travel too far backwards. This keeps rate of fire up and allows the spring to be on the center of gravity, in a parallel line from the centre of the stock. The weight of the lower part of the bolt; the telescoping part, offsets the fact that the barrel is not parallel to the centre of the stock.

The extractor on the bolt picks up the expended cartridge. The gases created by the the ignition of the primer push the bolt backwards and as it goes backwards, the ejector kicks out the empty cartridge with the empty belt feed. As the expanding gases created by the last round move the bolt rearwards, the belt will pull a new round into the breech after the last round is ejected. The powerful spring on the bolt pushes the bolt forwards and the process is repeated until the belt is dry.

(FGR) Standard Rifle Mk III

Operation & Design: The FGR utilises a long-stroke gas piston, with a rotary bolt mechanism. The operation is remarkably similar to the AKM with the gas piston connected to the dust cover, which is tied to the charging handle; the selection lever acting as a rear dust cover at the same time as a safety catch. The design team, realising that the operation of the weapon sufficiently aided in extraction and chambering, decided to make the bolt mechanism surprisingly light for its size. This reduces 'throw-around' inside the receiver without affecting chambering or extraction. It also reduces felt recoil as the bolt impact itself is reduced as compared to other battle rifles. The bolt cycles slower than in other rifles, giving the barrel time to re-adjust to its natural position. The gas port is very bulky and is used to hold in position the barrel; supported by a metal frame inside the foregrip.

The barrel itself is chrome lined, and very heavy, weighing 1.415kg. The rifling is a right hand twist at a 1:10 rate, with four grooves. The tolerance of the Questarian produced FGR barrels is usually +0.0008 which is considered an acceptable medium between tight groupings and reliability.

To reduce recoil, a very similar muzzle brake as the Belgian FN is employed by the Questarian produced FGRs with very noticeable recoil reduction effects. The overall heavy weight of the weapon combined with the light bolt are some of the further recoil-reduction effects that make the FGR easier to handle than other battle rifles. The design is ergonomic, with the charging handle on the left-side, unlike most other rifles, and closer to the user, which in addition to the large and obvious paddle release, makes reloading very easy. The firing selector is also on the left hand side which means that a user can operate the weapon without moving his hand from the pistol grip. It is possible to unsafe the weapon and load a magazine in one motion; this training is given to recruits in the Questarian Army.

To reload, grip the magazine and slide it at an angle into the magazine well. It should click, but don't wrap your fingers around the magwell. Instead, glide your hand upwards to manipulate the firing selector. The three firing modes are; safe, automatic, single shot.

Due to the heavy barrel and large gas port, and weight saving elements in the receiver, the weapon is very well balanced; there is neither too much weight ahead or behind the chamber. It therefore shoots very smoothly and naturally so long as the barrel is aligned tightly to the shoulder. The FGR's receiver is of a milled construction; that is, it is produced by machining out a block of steel. This makes it heavy and resistant to warp or bending. The weapon is chiefly constructed from steel.

Doctrine No rifle is perfect for all purposes. This is true of the FGR too. The FGR is a long battle rifle designed to be used by conscripts and troops with little training because of its ergonomic nature and easy to handle recoil. It has a long engagement range of some 600-700 yards but that is not its true strength. The true strength of the FGR is in the reliability of the operation and the smoothness of the shot.

FGRs in the Questarian Army are often issued with folding stocks. At least half of the FGRs in use in the subcontinent are folding stock FGRs. The reason for this is that the folding stock further reduces the weight of the weapon and also the size; to 880mm (35~ inches) from 11300 (44~). This is because the Questarian Army is a fully mechanised Army and almost all infantry use some form of vehicle for transport. This makes the weapon more compact and very much more manageable.

As well as accurate distance target shooting, recruits are also taught assault techniques; how to control the weapon properly on automatic (which is no easy feat, but manageable given the low fire rate), how to shoot from different positions including half shouldered and from the hip, the mozambique drill, and fighting in built up areas techniques.

That said, the FGR is not an assault weapon. It is best used at 100-400 yards. It is a heavy battle rifle, not an assault rifle. Consequently, tactical operations must be decisive in nature; troops often will not carry as much ammunition as other soldiers with smaller calibre but equally suppressive weapons. This is a major downfall of the FGR because ammunition capacity necessarily restricts the tactical freedom of infantry formations.

(FGR) Standard Rifle No. 3 Export Mk II

History: Before 1952, a variety of rifles had been used by the Association and Confederation Armies. In the North, the M1 Garand dominated, whereas in the south the old Lee Enfield rifle was still used in great numbers. Problems with ammunition commonality had always been a problem for the Freeholders and this was no exception, but both .30-06 and .303 were in wide supply. The original production of the FGR was not actually intended to unify the two calibres; this is somewhat of a military myth.

The General Staff of the Army recognised that the new rifles coming into service world wide were quickly making small-magazine bolt actions and semi-automatics obsolete. While the Garand did stay in service in some formations well into the sixties, FN Rougecote produced the FGR for General Sir Mark Anthony who was besotted with the weapon. It came in both .303 and .30-06 and could allegedly, in the hands of a conscript rifleman, drop a Dumani at a thousand yards. It was automatic and could be used either as an assault rifle in trained hands or a battle rifle, was accurate and not too heavy or reliable compared to the SMLE or the M1. It was also extremely reliable as a result of its internal mechanisms.

It was not until 1961 that ammunition commonality really began. FN Rougecote released a Mk II of the rifle now named the Standard Rifle (STAR), chambered in the 7.5 x 55 Swiss round, which possessed superior ballistics. While this did cause a certain amount of dissent, the change was carried through and the Army has never looked back. Most of the four million Mk I rifles are now in civilian collectors hands. Later on in 1961 the Mk II was upgraded to the No. 2 Mk II which had a more compact receiver, a result of changing the bolt and bolt carrier for the new round.

In 1962, FN Rougecote put the rifle up for export with the No. 3 Mk II, which used a modified form of the old receiver, so that it could be sold for a variety of very heavy battle rounds; up to 8mm in some instances. This export model is the one that most foreigners are acquainted with. Later on in that decade in 1967 a special forces 'Carbine' version was released.

Design: The FGR is operated by a long-stroke gas system, with a rotating bolt action. Briefly explained, the FGR action works like so; the magazine is inserted and the charging handle is pulled back, manually cycling the action; the bolt rotates into place, carrying a cartridge with it, and then locks straight with the breech. The trigger is pulled, which detonates the propellent and the bullet is fired. The gas generated by the propellent is funneled into the gas tube and forces the gas piston back, in turn pushing back the bolt carrier, which then is pushed forward by a spring, recycling the action and pushing forward another cartridge to be fired. The gas regulator is towards the end of the weapon, in front of the gas port.

The fire selector is a large selector that can be swung into any position, with the firer's hand maintaining a grip on the pistol grip. The top position is safe, the middle position is fully automatic, and the bottom position is one-two round. In the one-two round mode, squeezing the trigger as like a normal semi-automatic will fire one round. However, squeezing it will fire two.

Another feature of the already anachronistic FGR is its left-handed firing capability. Firstly, a large quantity of FGRs were expected to be issued. Secondly, the Questarian subcontinent has a higher percentage of left-handed shooters than most countries, both of which would lead to, in ordinary firearms, the discomfort of a wrong-handed shooter. This was something the Army wished to remove. The FGR's magazine release catch is featured on both sides of the rifle and is a button-press release that can be utilised using the trigger finger. Furthermore, a left-handed bolt can replace the ordinary bolt inside the receiver and a left-hand ejection flap can replace the ordinary ejection flap. These modifications are easy enough for troops in the field to undergo. Ordinarily recruits are given the modification kits and told to do it themselves to encourage familiarity with the rifle -- in some instances, however, troops who shoot with the left hand actually bring left-handed FGRs from home.

The FGR can mount a picatinny rail, but the Mk 1 Ironsights are exported with the rifle. They feature a aperture sight; a circular foresight backed against a three-prong foresight. The centre pront of the foresight is tritium illuminated.
