Welcome to the regular season of NSCAA 3!

Although it is a bit early to post a firm schedule, it is not too early to introduce your players to the world. Post your rosters here!

Also, all matchday RPs will be here as well. And not to overburden you, please make it known which team(s) you want to concentrate on so as to get the proper RP bonus during the regular season.

Postby Bluth Corporation » Sat Feb 05, 2011 4:58 pm

Surprisingly, basketball has never been a terribly popular sport in Bluth Corporation. Especially in the northern reaches of the country, the long winters and small agricultural towns that dot the landscape would seem to be the perfect environment for basketball fever to take root; but alas, it is football that has dominated the public consciousness, even in areas that simply do not have the resources to field football clubs of their own.

So it was with some understandable trepidation that officials at tiny Harbaugh College in Copland decided to field a varsity-level basketball team, believed to be the first of its kind in Bluth Corporation. Though the game was unusually popular on campus--originally it seemed to be a fad, but over the span of a decade it has grown into a great intramural tradition--officials were worried that lack of public interest might make supporting a team infeasible. That changed when the student body itself, through the Student Government Association, committed to providing both moral and financial support to a varsity team for the next five seasons. "We're really proud of our student body coming together to support this," said Quentin Coryatt, the school's athletic director. "Funding is always hard to come by, but they've made it known that it means a lot to them, so now we in the athletics office owe it to them to make it happen."

The problem, of course, is finding opponents. While scholastic sports in general are quite popular in Bluth Corporation, basketball programs at a level capable of providing quality competition simply do not exist. "That was the big sticking point in getting it approved," said Aaron Bailey, president of Harbaugh College. "We loved the idea of having a team; it was just that we couldn't do it if we didn't have anyone to play against. This international collegiate league is such a boon for us--not only does it give us opponents, it also gives us exposure. We're already known as one of the premier small liberal arts colleges in Bluth Corporation, but playing in this league will, we think, give us some name recognition that will allow us to attract international talent, both in faculty and in student body--not to mention attracting some more funding for our research and classroom programs!"

The big question now, of course, is how will the team fare on the international stage? The inaugural team will be made up entirely of current students, and Harbaugh College has no intention of compromising its lofty academic standards by recruiting for on-court talent in the future. Tryouts, now and for the foreseeable future, will be open to all current students, and while only the best of those who come out will make the team, how will these players stack up against players recruited explicitly for their basketball prowess?

Once the decision was made to field a varsity-level basketball team, the first task for the athletic office at Harbaugh College was to find a coaching staff. This was a problem, because they needed someone with the basketball knowledge to maintain credibility with the players, but could be trusted not to jeopardize the college's elite academic reputation. But they were in luck, because such a person was already on the university's faculty: Associate Professor of Anthropology Floyd Turner. Turner himself was a hard-core basketball aficionado, and he was excited for the opportunity to lead Harbaugh College's first varsity basketball team. "I'm excited to have a chance to set the tone for this brand-new program for years to come," he stated in a press release. "Our students are fine men and women, and I know they'll be fine players as well. Building this program up from nothing is going to be a huge challenge, but I believe that Harbaugh College's faculty and student body is more than up to the class."

Of course, every head coach needs a few assistants. Turner's preference was to stick to his fellow faculty, but as there were no other serious basketball fans to be found on the faculty that meant he would have to educate his assistants on the game, at the same time as he was organizing tryouts and the first practices. And, of course, he still had his teaching and research duties to keep up with. Turner's wife Francine was not particularly amused by all this, as she let her husband know in no uncertain terms after he got home from the press conference.

Finding a coaching staff turned out to be a bigger project than Coach Turner anticipated, and it was getting close to crunch time. He HAD to hold tryouts, even if it meant he was the only coach for the team. The Physical Facilities and Scheduling office was extremely cooperative in giving him gym time, and so the tryout date was advertised across campus.

Given basketball's popularity among Harbaugh College students, that 233 people showed up for the tryouts should not have been surprising. Still, Coach Turner was absolutely not prepared for such a turnout and he wasn't sure how he could ever hope to evaluate players in the span of a single day. Suddenly an idea came to him. He asked all the hopefuls to have a seat in the stands, and he explained the situation: "Gentlemen, you should have registered and received a number to pin on your shirt when you came in. I'm told that right now we've got 233 people here. This is unbelievable, and it speaks to just how important basketball is to the Harbaugh College student body. I'm thrilled we've got this many people, but as you might imagine it's going to be a bit tricky to make sure we can evaluate everyone. So here's what we're gonna do: I want you all to take the next hour to warm up a bit, maybe get to know one another--remember, any of you could make the team, and any of these guys could be your future teammates. Even if you don't, you've all got something in common: your love of Harbaugh College and of basketball. I'm going to go to my office and work out how this is going to happen."

Coach Turner walked out of the gym, and the prospects all looked ateach other. Some players climbed down from their seats and timidly took a basketball from the rack and began shooting, others started stretching, while some were jogging around the gym. With four courts once the bleachers were pushed back and only 50 balls, it was a bit packed in the Bert Jones Memorial Gymnasium, but they made it work. But despite Coach Turner's suggestion, few were making any attempt to socialize--even though many of them already knew one another.

One exception to this was down on the South Goal of Court C. Greg Bartkowski, a freshman, was practicing free-throws when Nick Folk made his way over to the court and began shooting threes while Bartkowski was retrieving his balls between shots. From his performance in the college's intramural league he figured he had a pretty good shot at making the team, and though he wasn't terribly extroverted he saw this as a good chance to make some lifelong friends--so when he saw Folk knocking down trey after trey, he thought, Now here's a guy who I might be teammates with. I should probably talk to him.

Still, Bartkowski was shy, and so initially he just nodded and smiled at Folk, hoping Folk would be the one to start the conversation. Folk, however, just nodded back, so a few moments later Bartkowski threw caution to the wind and remarked, "Man, you're good."

"Oh, thanks," Folk replied. "It's different when you got someone playing against you, though."

"Yeah, but still, man...wow! I think you've got a great shot at making the team."

"I hope so. My girlfriend says I need to get out more. Says I read too much, write too much. I mean, she loves great music and literature and opera as much as I do, but she thinks I need more balance, and I kind of think she's right. Maybe if I make the team I can get it."

"Wait...you like opera, too?" Bartkowski was intrigued. He wanted to say something more, but at that moment Coach Folk returned to the gym. Gathering everyone around him in a massive circle, he announced to the crowd of eager prospects: "Alright, gentlemen, this is how it's going to work. One-on-one tournament, single elimination. Ten-minute games, half-court. We've got four courts so that means eight games go on at once. We'll stop when we get to sixteen, and those sixteen will be our varsity team. So 217 games. It's not ideal, but I'm afraid it's the best we can do. I've asked some of the gym staff to keep score and keep an eye out for fouls for me. So if we're all ready, take a look at the bracket I'll put up here and we'll go. First set of eight games will start in half an hour, and we should be out of here by 6 PM. You can leave to get a lunch when you're not playing, of course. Best of luck, gentlemen."

As the crowd surged towards the poster with the brackets, Bartkowski and Folk were both at the very front. Seeing that they happened to draw opposite ends of the bracket, they realized that there was no chance they would have to play each other--they could, indeed, end up as teammates.

I'm only going to post the Starting Five for each school. I'm guessing anything else is unnecessary. If you are RP'ing against one of my schools and you want to add a reserve just say "the reserve" or the "guy off the bench".

Further RP Permissions:
Choose Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Will say yes for now.
Injure Players: No.
Eject Players: Aside from "fouling out", no.
Godmod Other Events: These are collegiate athletes, which in Newmanistan represent players that are below the curve (or late bloomers) if they do not already have a professional contract by the time they are 18. Therefore, they see this as a great opportunity and a last chance. This means that they will act professionally and respectfully over the course of the entire tournament.

There are to be no REAL-WORLD pictures posted to any of your RP's which would have a Newmanistanian player also in the picture, in any capacity. Additionally, if we are at home, there are to be no stadium shots in any way in the background. I will publicly call you out in the discussion thread if you do. This is my biggest pet peeve on NS Sports.

About Newmanistan Basketball: In Newmanistan, there is also a 4-point line which is 3 feet from the conventional 3-point line and a newly established 5-point line which is an additional 6-feet behind that. (Yes we play on a wider court). Though these will not exist in NSCAA 3, obviously, be advised that our shooters are accustomed to shooting from these distances with confidence meaning your team will need to defend areas of the court they might not usually be used to. (Don't even think about a zone).

All eyes on the upcoming college basketball season

8 of Saugeais' most prestigious basketball colleges will take part in the upcoming NSCAA season in the coming weeks, each team hoping for nothing less than a berth to the NSCAA playoffs. The top two teams in the nation, the Bugny A&M Eagles and the Saugeais State Lancers has been preparing for this all year, and have high goals for the season. "We want to make the playoffs, of course," said head coach of the Lancers, Jason Cromwell, "But I'm sure my team has the talent and ability to make the Final Four. With or most recent high school acquisition, Michael Gilchrist, we add depth to our forward spot, which has been lacking in the past few years." Regarding to the other players on the roster, "Well we have some great shooters already in Francis Perch at forward and Brian Pollock at guard. The big man Kasey Pennington is one of the top shot blocking centers in the nation, and I hope he can continue his dominant performance this season"

On the other side, the Bugny A&M Eagles have taken it upon themselves in training their players all out. Head coach Francisco Salieri has put forth the notion that all work and no play makes Jack a champion, but will it pan out in the regular season? "I certain think so," said Salieri, "And I hope that my players will abide by my work ethic, because if you stop trying, you stop winning. And I don't want that; I want to win it all." When asked about how his players have performed in preseason practice, "We have the outside shooting that is crucial to win big games. The tandem of Christian Edgars and John Zevon at guard really puts the pressure on the opponents to guard both the top and bottom of the court. And although he doesn't get a lot of play time, Daniel Grant, our freshman center, is certainly coming into his groove. He is taking on that rookie role, eating up the minutes that Thomas Svenson needs on the bench, and he can play some great defense too."

The regular season tips off tomorrow. Follow your team on SNN Sports Network, or catch the results here on online at national-journal.com.

The schools of Lycrabon have been separated into their respective conferences. Here’s our preview of the ten and their conference title chances:

1. UNIVERSITY OF LAKEVIEW
The Pirates find themselves in the Royal Mountain Conference, with the likes of Saugeais State and Newmanistan’s Emperor Justin I. Those frontrunners and Lakeview should be in a tight three-way battle for both the regular season and conference tournament titles.
PROJECTION: 20-13, fifth.

2. LAKE SHORE STATE UNIVERSITY
Lake Shore State ends up in the Pioneer League, where they’ll battle Bugny A & M, New Washington Finance, and Qazox-Pika City. The Valhalla Table (student section) will need every ounce of throat to spur he Vikings on.
PROJECTION: 17-16, seventh.

3. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH MAGOOTZ
The Lions may have gotten a break, avoiding all of the Newmanisani schools. However, they did draw Astern Point from Mytannion and Qazox’s Porter College in One Big Conference. The Lions Den student section should have plenty to scream about.
PROJECTION: 24-9, first.

4. LYCRABON WAR COLLEGE
The Warriors have the most civilized student section - being the military academy. The only competition it looks to be that they have in the Emperor Justin I Conference is Catherina from Delaclava.
PROJECTION: 23-10, tie for first.

5. YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
The newest school in Lycrabon may have the toughest road. The fittingly named Octavius Conference has Southport, Valhalla, Yorkshire.
The Igloo most likely will be very cold.
PROJECTION: 7-26, last.

6. PHILIPSBURG STATE UNIVERSIITY
The Uniballer Conference. The only downside is getting placed with Loudon Empire. Other than that, the Gorillas have a very good chance to get an at-large bid, if not the automatic.
PROJECTION: 20-13, second.

7. FAIR HAVEN STATE UNIVERSITY
The Jays made the only outside recruiting moves, picking up Austin Trevor and Alex Hutras. Most every school in the Goldsould Conference can very easily win the conference, and possibly the whole thing. Unfortunately for Fair Haven, there might be too many good teams.
PROJECTION: 18-15, fourth.

8. NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY
The ‘Canes are one of four who could take the Azure Skies Conference auto bid. Loudon Empire is the early favorite, and a prohibitive favorite to hoist the hardware at the end of the year.
But the pride of the capital will make things interesting.
PROJECTION: 20-13, third.

9. NORTHERN DINAGAT STATE UNIVERSITY
The Panthers, representing the Welcome City, are looking into hosting a challenge cup rivalry with Newmanistan’s University of Tundra Falls. Tundra Falls, incidentally, will most likely be the Panthers’ roadblock to running away with the Big 11 Conference title.
PREDICTION: 26-7, second.

10. SALTVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY
The Dragons will challenge for the Woodfield Conference title, a possible deference to the NSCF conference of a similar nature in Lycrabon. Their fellow Dragons, Ramusok Capital - who managed to steal two Lycrabonian recruits - will be one of the few challengers to their title, but it may not be enough.
PREDICTION: 31-2, first.

All schools are familiar with each other, having all challenged in the LCAA. The official Lycrabon-only preseason poll:

1. Lakeview (1 first place vote)66 pts.
2. Lake Shore State (2) 59
3. War College (3) 57
4. North Magootz 55
5. Newcastle (1) 54 *
6. Philipsburg State 54
7. Saltville State (2) 52
8. Youngstown State (1) 52
9. Fair Haven State 51
10. Northern Dinagat State 50

* points ties were broken by number of first-place votes; that is why Newcastle (1-0) and Saltville State (2-1) are higher ranked.

NSCAA IS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR

Pocono City-
With two seasons of the NSCAA in the books with a successful tournament in each, administrators of the organization have opted to put a new slant on it. It is an ambitious format with participating nations providing anywhere from 1 to 10 schools into the mix. The teams have then been divided into 12 Conferences, with 11 teams a piece, and they will play each team of their conference three times. While some might think that the logical set up would be to have all of the schools of one nation competing against each other in a conference, that is not the case. For the most part, schools from one nation are the only school from that nation in the conference, although there are a couple of exceptions where on conference has two schools from one nation. Let’s take a look now at the pros and cons of this setup.

Normally, a piece like this would start with the “pros”, but we are going to start with the “cons”. This is because the negative aspects of the tournament do seem to less then the positive. The big thing is cost. For a small school, such as Brighton College, the travel associated with competing is a big expense for the athletic program of the school and there were some protests from alumni about their decision to participate. BC Athletic Director Stephen Hollaran told us that, “This was a very difficult decision, but the kids have done such a great job competing with the best schools in Newmanistan, that I had to give them this opportunity. It’s expensive and as an academic institution, we realize that our priorities need to be providing the kids with an education, and not expensive athletic excursions. If it were not for the support of corporate sponsors, I would have had to decline.” The other main negative factor is the class time in which the students will need to sacrifice in order to compete. If the bigger schools such as University of Southport weren’t necessarily feeling the financial pinch, they understand the academic sacrifice. Economics Professor of U Southport, Dr. Edwin Philcox told us that, “The competitive side of the students makes them think they are invincible and that they can cope with the in-class time that they will miss. It will not be easy, and they have to make a commitment to bring their studies on the road with them. I’ve talked to Corey (Savage) who is in one of my classes, and he understands that when he is in places like Delaclava or Lycrabon or God forbid the biggest place of temptation, Cassadaigua, it’s not party time and not just hoops time. The books have to go with him. I understand that this is a time commitment, but he needs to understand too that I still have a class to teach, and he will not get any favors. On the flip side, I am glad he can go to a place like Sibirsky, and see firsthand how their capitalist society works.”

Those are not easy sacrifices, but the professor pointed out one of the biggest things working in the favor of the tournament, which is the experience for the young kids to see these different cultures. Corey Savage is an Economics major at U Southport and going to a place like Sibirsky, perhaps somewhere he never would have been otherwise, and seeing their extraordinarily capitalist society in action will give him valuable learning experience. “Yeah, I told to Dr. Philcox and he’s right, man. I want to play well and bring the greatest glory to my school but the travel is cool too. Going to Sibirsky will be very exciting but at the same time I am there for basketball. I think going to Cassadaigua will be cool too to see how such a matriarchal society thrives. When we’re on the plane I think we will do most of our studying. I think we get that we’re not here for the partying and all that. I mean we are part of a school that made it all the way to the championship game of the first tournament, so we know we’re legit.” Other then the travel, most feel it is beneficial for the schools to play schools from other nations now as to get a feel for the way they may play. What benefit is there, really, to a Tundra Falls University vs Loudon Empire University match now? What will the players of TFU and LEU learn that they haven’t already seen from playing within Newmanistan in our national season? Putting them up against schools from accomplished nations like a Sibirsky or Delaclava, or a Qazox are going to provide much more benefit to them now. Playing a Dagan school is beneficial now too as our men will quickly learn how amazing Cassadaigua’s women are athletically. These aren’t the only nations that are participating, and the schools of the other nations are quite capable as well. At the same time, Savage warns others that these schools will need to make an adjustment to playing our representatives as well. “There is no other nation in the world that has our 4 and 5 point lines. We are so able to shoot from deeper distances, and just because they might only be 3-pointers still in this competition, we’re still gonna put ‘em up because we know we can hit ‘em. You cannot play conventional defense against us. Not against us with U Southport or against any of the other nine teams Newmanistan is sending, either. We will “stop ‘n pop” if you’re not ready and we got a clean look.

When asked if he considers the other Newmanistanian school friends in this tournament or his biggest rivals, Savage laughs, “I guess now they’re cool! Funny to think of them like that after competing against them all year but yeah if not us I still want a school from Newmanistan to do good. I want us all to kick some ass!”
