I'm from the DEEP South, Ask me anything

Yes, yes I know there is a thread similar to this but the OP is from Kentucky I believe. And truthfully Kentucky to most people is really pushing it on the "southern" connection. In fact they even specify in their thread that they aren't from the Deep South. So from football, barbeque, and politics I know it and live it every day. If you're also from this region and wish to chime in feel free to do some!

Now ask away!

*For reference these states/areas are considered the deep south to me: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Northern Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Eastern Texas.

I'll ask the same questions I asked there:

How religious or conservative are people in that area? Of course different people will have different worldviews, but what is the general zeitgeist?

And can I find cowboys there?

(Btw why only Northern Florida and Eastern Texas? For Florida, why exclude the "Southern" part when the south is what we're talking about? I'm not American by the way, so I'm not too knowledgeable regarding these places.)

Depends on where you are at. If you go east towards the appalachian mountains it'll obviously be more "hilly" there but besides that I would consider our roads to be hilly at all.

Religion played a major into shaping the south into what it is today. There's literally a church on every corner in every town down here. The answer your question I'd say religion and government are basically intertwined down here. Most people here are conservative and even more consider themselves Christian. In fact I've only met a handful of Muslims and Jews in my entire life.

It depends whether your talking about real cowboys or the wanna be's. For the latter you can find them pretty much everywhere, from large cities to small towns. Typically a wrangler shirt, blue jeans, boots, cowboy hat, you get the gist. For the former you'll find real cowboys on cattle ranches. The state with the most is probably Texas (largely because of it's size) with some in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Arkansas.

I excluded the rest of Florida and Texas because like I said with North Carolina I don't see them as "culturally southern". Both are heavily influenced by a rich, Hispanic heritage. You can these in places like Miami and El Paso. So that's why I excluded them.

I had an NSer from California observe recently that he thought I would have a southern accent given that I live in Atlanta.

The point is that "southerner" can mean many things to different people.

Right now for me the highs are in the mid to low 80s F. It usually isn't this hot this time of year but I believe El Nino is to blame. Summers are hot no matter what though.
