Playing a game as the pope sounds kind of funny, like just trying to conquer and take over all of Italy into a papal mega state. Or maybe a rival pope of one of the heresies, or at least a bishop or something, that could be a fun game.

Asking people here who already have the game: is By God Alone functional and playable right now or should I exercise patience and wait for the next one or two patches before I get it?

That depends on if you prefer a board game or a simulator. For me, personally, no contest EUV blows EUIV out of the water, but a lot of people feel the opposite.

I would wait if I were you. Played once on 867 and then 1066 to try it, the former being quite buggy and the iberian struggle not involving chalcedonianism for some reason lmao. Paradox really should playtest more.
Quite naive of me to get it on release tbh.

You don't understand. Paradox Interactive uses game releases as playtests. Why beta test if they can sell the game right away?

You don't understand. Paradox Interactive uses game releases as playtests. Why beta test if they can sell the game right away?

At this point, they need to start Charlie tests. These beta tests arent enough at this point.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if Paradox studios have a fundamentally flawed beta testing philosophy. I suspect what might be the case is that they rigorously test if the absolute bare bones mechanic work in a vacuum, without actually checking to see if they interact with other systems, or outside of "expected" behavior.

We do see in Dev Diaries that they use, well, dev mode to present new features, which could be a reason that they don't see mechanics fucking up fifth or a hundred years into a game, because they artificially run them from a fresh start.

My CK3 game got stuck because my liege accepted a populist faction demand which took all my titles, game flagged no info to warn me about the risk of this or explain what happened, the adventurer event then failed to fire, my character was left unable to do any activities, take any decisions, or interact with any other characters, with a realm of "None of, concept_none".

Debug mode, my beloved. Manually set the character to adventurer and built up an army to grind that populist leader into fine paste and it worked quite well for RP with the callous and paranoid heir who lost an arm during his father's campaign to take the land back. But that's why you never play this game in ironman.

I'm playing my first game of Vic 3 in quite some time as Sweden, and it seems largely the same as it was ~3 years ago except with a couple more annoying mechanics. I have extensive colonies in and around the Gulf of Guinea and the Congo, just let me set up some colonies in eastern Africa goddamn it, why do I have to wait for some bizarre and poorly explained arbitrary interest number to tick up so I can start beating them up over there.

None of this to say that the state of the game is bad per se, at least not any worse than it was last time I played.

I don't think I've ever been as pissed off as I am right now. The Roman Rite Archbishop (who I have no control over because he lives in the neighbouring kingdom) keeps converting my counties, I can't convince him to change rites, and I can't just break off and establish my own Archbishopric either. And to add insult to injury the Pope keeps white peacing every war I fight the second it starts looking like I'm winning.

It's Paradox. The time between release and the first hotfix is basically an open beta. It'll be good afterwards, so I'll play it then. ;p
