Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Tur Mytanija, which has been opened up to foreign riders for the first time in its history. Mytanija's domestic cycling season has been opened up more widely, to allow foreign riders and teams the chance to acclimatise to some of the most competitive races in the multiverse before the biggest race of them all: Tur Mytanija. This means that Mytanija's spring classics season will see foreign competition for the first time too, as well as some of the pre-Tur preparatory stage races.

There are 31 days of racing in all and something for every type of rider! The season will feature the following races:

    1. Trofej Gazvoda (one-day race, flat sprint season opener)
    2. Severyan-Cassia (one-day race, Milan-San Remo-esque)
    3. Ciezin-Prizren (one-day race, Paris-Roubaix/Tour of Flanders hybrid)
    4. Tour of Težia (one-day race, think Liege-Bastogne-Liege)
    5. Zavolja-Sigurno (one-day race, mountainous classic)
    6. Palilula-Trunca (3 stages; largely flat stage race)
    7. Three Steps of Ebena (3 stages; mountainous stage race on Mytanija's highest and steepest slopes)
    8. Tur Magevskaya (3 stages; tour of the island off Mytanija's north-east coast)
    9. Tur Nasto (5 stages; tour of the island off Mytanija's south coast and preparation race for Tur Mytanija)
    10. Tur Mytanija (12 stages; the biggest show in town)

RP BONUS & TEAM LEADER BONUS
RP Bonus will be generous and cumulative and will be particularly based upon each RP's quality, the quality of the RP's interaction with other RPers (where relevant) and demonstration of cycling-specific depth (where relevant - I do not prescribe how you should RP and welcome RPs about anything and everything, this is merely a note that when RPing about the sport and an attempt is made to reflect it within the RP special attention will be paid to any nice cycling-specific flourishes). An RP by the nation which owns a team will count for all of its riders, no matter what their nationality.

Ahead of each race, each team's directeur sportif (i.e. you!) may choose a rider as your team leader for the upcoming race. This is likely something that you will choose on the basis of the race's characteristics, for example for the flat Trofej Gazvoda you may pick your best sprinter; or for Ciezin-Prizren you may pick your cobbled classics specialist with the best bikehandling; and for Tur Mytanija your GC leader.

This must be done in an RP!!! with the idea being that it gives other nations an idea of who the team leader is for each team and to provide some fuel for their own RPs both pre and post-race. An example could be an interview with your IC sporting director talking about your team's tactics for the upcoming race, or a conversation between the riders discussing how their team leader is feeling. Once you have done this within the RP, you can then include an OOC note to confirm, e.g. OOC: John Smith is assigned team leader bonus for Trofej Gazvoda just to make it obvious for me ahead of scorination.

This bonus will give the team leader a small boost for the race in question and will be slightly larger than the RP bonus which will be available for each single one of the 25 scorination windows. It will reset after each race and if no rider is selected then you will miss out.

It is worth remembering that professional cycling teams often have different priorities, with some built for world-class sprinters and others built to win the general classification, so it is worth thinking about what your team is aiming to do over the course of the season and which races, stages and stage races they are aiming to win.

IC Information

One-day races

Trofej Gazvoda (225km)
The opening major event of the Mytanar cycling season, Trofej Gazvoda is a long, largely flat journey across Visoravna, Mytanija’s northernmost region. Starting in Snezhnaya, the peloton winds its way south across open countryside and exposed coastal roads before turning north again and reaching the sun-drenched port city of Ebor. At 225 kilometres, the race is an early-season test of endurance, positioning and teamwork, with crosswinds potentially proving as decisive as raw speed. The parcours strongly favours the sprinters, but surviving the distance and arriving fresh in Ebor will be no small achievement.

Severyan-Cassia (300km)
The longest and most prestigious flat one-day race on the Mytanar calendar, Severyan–Cassia is a monumental 300-kilometre test that gradually builds towards a tense and explosive finale. The route remains relatively forgiving for much of the day before a pair of late climbs transform the race. Črni Vrh, measuring 5.6km at 4.1%, begins the decisive phase around 22km from the finish, while Kamniti Vrh rises for 3.7km at 3.7%, with sections approaching 8%, before cresting just 5.5km from Cassia. The final descent and run into the city leave little margin for error, creating a race where a hardened sprinter can battle directly against the strongest attackers.

Ciezin-Prizren (278km)
A relentless 278-kilometre battle across the hills of western Mytanija, Ciezin–Prizren combines steep climbs, narrow roads and approximately 60 kilometres of punishing cobblestone sectors. The race gradually wears down the field before the decisive finale begins with Redutom, a 1.6km ascent at 9.5%. After further cobbled sectors and repeated short climbs, the riders face Sokolova Stijena - 1.3km at a brutal 11% - just 13km from the finish. From its summit, the road races towards Prizren, leaving the strongest survivors to fight for victory. Mechanical problems, positioning and the ability to repeatedly accelerate on rough terrain can all prove decisive.

Tour of Težia (260km)
The Tour of Težia is a demanding 260-kilometre loop through some of the toughest terrain surrounding the city, with the race's defining sequence packed into its final 60 kilometres. Stara Vogošća begins the succession at 2.2km and 4%, although its 11.6% maximum hints at what lies ahead. Sveštenikov follows at 1.2km and 12.9%, reaching 20.3%, before the road rises again through Hotonj - 1.5km at 6.6%. The vicious Brdo Lobanja then delivers 1.5km at 13.6% (named for the cobblestones on the climb which look like the top of skulls), with gradients touching 22%. With only 11km remaining, Zidovi Tezije provides another 1.1km at 9.3%, before the final challenge: Predragov, a 2km climb averaging 12% that carries the riders to the finish in central Težia, on the road up to the Avdivedjic Synagogue. It is a finale where attacks can come at any moment and small gaps can quickly become decisive.

Zavolja-Sigurno (223km)
Zavolja–Sigurno is one of Mytanija's great mountain one-day races, covering 223 kilometres of demanding roads through the country's rugged interior. After a relatively controlled opening, the route gradually enters the mountains, with the gradients becoming increasingly severe as the race progresses. Vučja Glava, 7.2km at 6.1%, provides the first major selection, while the shorter but steeper Crni Kamen rises for 4.8km at 8.4%, with sections above 14%. The decisive battle is likely to develop on Orlov Krš, a 3.1km ascent averaging 9.2%, before a fast and technical descent towards Sigurno. With little flat road in the closing stages, the race favours riders capable of combining climbing strength, endurance and technical descending ability.

The Magnier-BadenMarkt cycling team announced today will be heading to Mytanija to participate in that nation's domestic cycling season.

"Of course we all love the Tour de Reçueçn, but that's not the only cycling competition in the multiverse," said Carl Stiglitz, the team's star rider. "There's a lot of other laurels out there for us to set our sights on, and the Tur Mytanija has to be one of the most prestigious. There's going to be riders from over a dozen different countries, and it's going to be our chance to represent Reçuecian cycling in front of all of them."

Magnier-BadenMarkt is the only Reçuecian team whose application to participate in the Tur Mytanija was accepted. For this reason, Reçuecian sports media have tacitly accepted the team as "Reçueçn's team," with their coverage suddenly spiking and far outpacing any coverage of other Reçuecian teams participating only in the domestic calendar. The brand ambassadors for Magnier, the Reçuecian luxury auto company which is the team's chief sponsor, have widely celebrated this development, even referring to the Magnier-BadenMarkt cycling team as "les licornes", the nickname of Reçueçn's national soccer team. Cycling fans across the nation—barring the most loyal supporters of Magnier-BadenMarkt's rivals—seem to have largely accepted this, and the team's fanbase has ballooned as it prepares for its first multiversal competitions.

Even the Reçueçian ministry of sport has endorsed Magnier-BadenMarkt, with Minister Jean-Luc Lassalle appearing on TV to promote their Tur attempt.

"We know that we'd all love to watch our boys and girls go out and win us a GC together," Lassalle said on an evening talk show where he appeared alongside some famous past Reçuecian cyclists. "That may be tough in a country where we've never competed before, against the best cyclists from across the multiverse. But," he went on, "we Reçuecians love our bikes like no one else." The studio audience cheered loudly for this. "And we know what our strengths are too—there are no mountains in the world better suited for cycling. I'm confident that each and every rider for Magnier can give anyone from Mytanija, the Kytler Peninsulae, or Liventia a run for their money up any climb you put in front of them. Our cyclists grow up with world-class climbs outside their front doors, training on cols riders come from around the world to train on. I'm confident that a Reçuecian can win the K.O.M. classification in Mytanija, or anywhere in the multiverse."

Magnier-BadenMarkt has established a training camp in the hills of western Thessia as a home base for its riders during the upcoming season. Local amateurs have already spotted the team out on the roads training as they prepare for the upcoming Trofej Gazvoda.

TEAM ASTERAS ENERGY - VÉLO CLUB DE GRANDEVILLE

Lisander has two outstanding professional cycling teams: Team Ingenium ING-Carbonnere, internationally known for its participation in a recent Tour of Ko-oren, and Team Harminbank-Azhaar Pro Racing, internationally known for leasing its name to a certain motorsports team. There are other teams, small, amateur, semi-pro, that compete in small events, like the Tour of Lisander, the Volta ao Valerian, the Northern Crossing and the Spirit of Cantabria, but these two especially are the biggest in the nation, a neck ahead of the others. Cycling Lisander, the national federation and event organizer, couldn't choose between one of them to send to the event, for a handful of reasons, including but not limited to:

1. Because they recently signed a record contract with Asteras, an energy company working in updating the eolic farms of northern Lisander and wanted their partner displayed;
2. Because it wanted the best lisanderian athletes competing before the Olympics;
3. Choosing one team would mean refusing the other, and facing lots of criticism;
4. Avoid investing funds in a single project, so as not to create an all-powerful team that will undermine local competition in the long run. So instead of one of those, Vélo Club de Grandeville, a small racing club based in Grandeville, northern Lisander, was chosen.

Cycling Lisander CEO, Maria Vernet, offered the following explanation: “This was an unusual situation, but I'm happy we reached good terms with VCG. We didn’t want it to look as though we were favouring either team. I wish we had been offered two spots. Both ING and Harmin are excellent, but if we had accepted one or the other, we would have faced a barrage of criticism from the team that was turned down. So the only possible choice was ‘neither’. So, one of the members of the Vélo-Club de Grandeville offered their facilities for the team’s training. They said: ‘We’ve only an amateur team, but we have a contract with the local council, that granted us a good area for use as training centre, near the Circuit. We can rent it or lend it to you’. The idea felt perfect. We got a facility in Grandeville, perfect for mountain training, and a clubhouse to use as our Headquarters. We discussed with both ING and Harmin, offered them a financial compensation for ‘poaching’ or ‘borrowing’ their athletes, as you prefer, and brought them to form a short-lived AsterasEnergy-Vélo Club de Grandeville, that will also be the base of Lisander Road Racing Team for the Olympic Games in Hamilton and Prescott.”

When it comes to the bicycles, as it was expected, Cycling Lisander continues its partnership with local brand Carbonnere. Its road racing model, the Alpina, almost omnipresent in Lisander competitions, on its multiple generations, will be used by Asteras-VCG riders. This one (Alpina G4), however, is being advertised as the greatest racing bike ever built by them, because of a partnership with Camden to the development of the groupset. ‘Made with F1 technology’, the advertising says, referring to Camden stints at AstyF1 and Forzala 1 Championship. Whether there is a real improvement in quality, or whether this is just marketing hype, we'll see.

When the list of signups was revealed, many were surprised. Most of the community expected a swansong of Leyton Castres, fifth-placed in the last Tour of Ko-oren, the best result of a Lisanderian rider outside Olympics, but the 38-year-old from ING opted to join the team only as part of the staff, supporting its team partners, André Venter (Bronze at Road Racing, 15th Olympics, 111th at Tour of Ko-oren), Yannis "Yan" Monteiro (26th at Tour of Ko-oren, chosen as captain for the first event), Lídio Navarre and Mateus Martinelli (53rd at Tour of Ko-oren). Fernando O'Ward, Filipe Almeida, Lauro Lisien and Athos Horsfall come from Team Harmin-Azhaar. Tássio de Mitri, the ninth member of the team, is the only Cycling Lisander contracted athlete, and rides professionally to Mariner-AstleyBank, a team from Beaumont, Northern Lisander, that actually exists to support his career. The 26-year rider, Sprint Olympic Champion in Hamilton-Schimpol, abandoned the track completely and became a top-level climber in mere three years, winning (against all those other guys) the white shirt with the green and yellow chest stripe, reserved to the national champion of Lisander, last season.

Lauri Suviste nervously pulled from his cigarette. He was the kind of smoker who put on his next smoke with the previous one and those unfortunate enough to share the DS car with him, suffered the consequences. According to Suviste, the rumors that his loyal mechanic Eppo Raming struggled with lungs due to that habit were just baloney. In short, he's a hard man to phase but even this old hand in the sport had not been looking forward to this. After some, well, less rosy passages in his career such as rumors about selling races to the highest bidder, Suviste had fallen on hard times. But a few months, sitting at home, watching television alone had taught him one thing: either he got back in the business or it would be the end of him. So when Mikkel Herrup passed him a call, he nearly ran to the head offices of LiitBank.

It wasn't until the short-skirted, well-manicured, flawless-accented secretary let him into the office of mister Herrup, that he realized how shabby his appearance would come across: the old chequered shirt, the patched jeans pants and the run-down sporting shoes. It was too late to change, so Suviste would have to convince with the case he had prepared. The premise in itself was outlandish. Mikkel Herrup was born into the wealth of a banking family, rich enough to spoil him and wise enough to keep him away from any real power that could threaten the family fortune. But the pocket money they offered still was enough to fund his hobbies, the main one being the management of the LiitBank cycling team. They were one of the eighteen teams licensed to compete in the Downwind Series, the only professional tour in the region formed by 24 races across 53 days. Thanks to strong guy Reio Nurme, the side routineously took home wins but it was a public secret that Herrup had bigger ambitions for the team. And now he had found a way forward in it, by applying to the Mytanijan domestic circuit.

Herrup had just two problems: his set of riders, especially the climbers, are likely to disappoint against international competition and his directeur sportif finally collapsed under the micromanagement of his boss and threw the towel. Maybe Lauri didn't realize it, but Herrup needed him as much as the other way around. You wouldn't tell from the way Herrup walked in, barked a command into the void behind him ("Coffee, pronto!") and seated himself in the large leather armchair that dominated the room. Lauri shuffled a bit on his chair.

"So. Suviste. Tell me."

At first, the explanation of Lauri was a bit hesitant but once in his element, he got on fire. He had great plans about the way they could compose the team and make it financially sound. For all the attitude Herrup carried, he was not an idiot and Lauri knew that he knew his cycling. Not as much as Lauri, after forty years in the business, but still. As he explained, Lauri calmly put flashcards on the desk with the main summary of the rider. As oldschool as he was, it were bits from a typewriter but they did the trick as good as any flashy presentation.

"For me, there are three guys on the current LiitBank roster that I want to go along for the ride. Reio Nurme as our leader for the flattish races, he's got the strength to get over a hill and the speed on the line. He's big, he's bulky, he's brass, he's the perfect face for this team. Additionally, I can see a spot for youngsters Taavi Kallerund and Jaakko Lepp in our line-up."
"Jaakko I see, having a tank like him will be of great use. But Scar as well and not, for example, Valter Nimar?"
"I'll be honest, I don't think Nimar has the attitude nor the potential to really shine in this Tur... The level is too high. For Taavi... I know that major crash marked him, both physically and mentally. But I see untapped potential in him as a multitool support rider."

Quietly, Herrup ogled the flashcards. Without words, you could see him make the calculations in his head: only keeping three riders, that meant six new guys... The funds were not endless.

"To complement them outside the mountains, there are two reasonably priced hires we should make for the season. We should invest in Peet Morsman and Qasim Fajr."
"Old Peet? A washed-up sprinter with his age?"
"He's only 33... I've worked with him. Yes, his speed no longer is what it has been, but if someone can guide Nurme through a hectic sprint, it is him. And I think he can be a good influence on our more... flamboyant personalities. If Peet speaks, you listen."

Herrup scratched his chin, but Lauri took the lack of further questions as a nod of approval.

"And for the hilly races, we could go with Fajr. Only three riders in the history of the Downwind Series won a one-day race before their twentieth birthday and he's one of them. Yes, he stalled a bit, but he's still only 23. I believe we can revamp him."
"Rumor on the street is that he suffers from performance anxiety."

The way Herrup pronounced it, you would be sure it was a dirty word.

"All the kid needs is a breath of fresh air."

At home, Lauri had practised to say that sentence as careless as possible. The reason he had suggested Fajr was because most of his hiring budget would go into his next proposal.

"But for our leader, we should go out and hire Zeru Tewodros."

Now he had the full focus of Herrup, who stopped watching the flashcards and looked him dead in the eye.

"Tewodros. The winner of the last Great Downwind Tour. Emara's first star rider and one of the, if not yet simply the, top rider of the region? How do you th-"
"I've heard through the grapevine that his team can use a boost."
"Chick'n'Mix?"
"Apparently their cosponsors are bailing for the next season, after winning the biggest race, they feel there name is out there enough and others don't want to cover the cost."
"Yeah, but they won't fall through at once."
"No, not with our offer. At the one hand, we give some cash to hire Tewodros for the Tur, whilst staying on their payroll. As a thank you, we slap their name onto the team name and ensure that their main sponsor gets more publicity out of this than they had ever imagined."

Twice, Mikkel started a counterargument but he never got to a finished sentence. Every way he looked at it, it was a beneficial deal for all involved and getting the 25-year old skinny star climber on board would boost not only the team but also the buzz. Deep down, Lauri started to bubble from delight. I still got it.

"Ok, Suviste," Mikkel eventually conceded, "we won't let him into the mountains on his own, shall we?"
"I would go with Grigore Muresanu and Txuki Garzarain on his side."

There would never be any discussion about Muresanu, known as a reliable helper who could set a high pace uphill.

"Garzarain..." Herrup sighed.
"He's out of contract-"
"For a reason."
"-And not done with the sport yet."

At 32, Txuki Garzarain could look at a trophy cabinet that held almost every mountainous and hilly top race held in the Downwind Series. But a nasty leg injury three seasons ago had been the start of his demise, combined with what his current team called disciplinary issues off the record.

"His stage win in the Great Tour just three months ago shows he's back on the level."
"And the next day, he lost seven minutes in a time trial."
"Well... It never was his strength. But that's not what we would pay him to do."
"We? I, you mean."

While Herrup wanted to set the chain of command straight with his reply, it also was the end of his official doubts around Garzarain. At his best, El Condor Branco is a worldclass climber and that's a fact. After a second of silence, Herrup calmly counted the flashcards.

"So, that's eight, Lauri. I know your reputation too well to believe you're bad at counting."
"Last but not least, I'ld suggest Nariman Amanetev."

The exasperated sigh hung in the room for a few seconds.

"He's got a great acceleration uphill and on his day, he can fight the whole peloton on his own."
"Yeah... The only problem is that no one knows when that day comes."
"The fans admire him," Lauri tried to sell his wildcard.
"And his teammates hate him. I've seen him fall back quite often when there's work to do but no result in it for him."
"He's... Got his quirks, I admit. But if he can pull the stunt and grab a win just once this season, across 31 stages, it's worth the investment."

Once more, Herrup's eyes went over the nine flashcards, one after the other. All riders had strengths but from the look of it, it was a motley crew.

"You really like taking a chance on guys who dropped the ball elsewhere, huh."
"Don't we all, sir?"

The candid reflection of their own situation made Mikkel chuckle as he checked the list one last time.

"Jezus Christ... Garzarain, Amanetev, Fajr, ..." he shook his head as if to shake off his better judgement, "Well, Suviste, it's you who's going to have to work with them. I'll let my secretary take care of the paperwork. In most cases, their current teams will be happy if someone takes them of their hands for a fair price and if the situation at Chick'n'Mix is as dire as you suggest, that should be easy as well."
"Excellent, I'll take care of the fitness plans. For guys like Tewodros, the main targets are later but if we want Reio Nurme to lead the squad in the Trofej Gazvoda, there is no time to lose."

The first thing the team notices as it steps off the plane in Ebor is the sea air. And fish. Síofra wrinkles her nose. “Ooh, what a welcome…”

Artemis laughs. “Dobrodošli v Mytaniji.”

All heads swivel toward the team’s classics specialist. She looks from one to the other. “What? Never seen one speak a foreign language before? It’s fun, you should try it.”

With that, she strolls toward the terminal, leaving the others in slight bewilderment. The baggage claim is as orderly as a mid-sized airport with teams arriving from all over the multiverse can be. Thankfully, Bloodthorn hired a team to take care of the bikes and other equipment, so the riders can focus on getting their own luggage. Katharina grabs a suitcase off the conveyor belt, whose colour scheme could potentially be considered a war crime in some nations.

“Trina, what the hell is THAT??” Andrew raises a suspicious eyebrow.

“My suitcase,” she responds flatly. “I’m tired of having to figure out which one is mine. This one you can’t miss.”

***

About four hours later, the team arrives at the hotel in Snezhnaya, the starting point of the Trofej Gazvoda, with a healthy delay because the team had to start a search and rescue mission to find Jooseppi, who had followed the scents of a Mytanar grill and bar deeper into the Ebor airport.

After checking in, the riders getting somewhat settled and the equipment team building the bikes and making sure everything has survived the flight, they embark on a light ride just outside of Snezhnaya to get the legs moving after the flight. It is a beautiful day that is only marred by one thing: Wind. Turns out director sportif Nicola Andrews had not picked this route at random but wanted to make the team aware of what could be a very decisive factor during the race.

By the time dinner rolls around, the riders are showered, massaged and in reasonably good spirits. Dinner itself is a bit of a disappointment to some, especially Jooseppi and Katharina, who had hoped for some Mytanar specialties.

They walk up to the buffet and see ćevapi, sarma, sausages, bean stew, pljeskavica, ajvar and more Mytanar dishes. The riders stare at the spread. Jooseppi inhales deeply, his stomach responding with an approving rumble.

“Tonight, you have two jobs,” nutritionist Stella Scarborough says emphatically. “Carbs and hydration.”

Katharina reaches for a ćevapi.

“No.”

“Just two.”

“No.”

“One?”

“You are racing tomorrow.” Stella points at the rice and pasta.

“Rice, potatoes, pasta. What a welcome change from pasta, rice and potatoes,” Katharina groans.

“Can I at least have some ajvar?” Jooseppi asks carefully.

Stella considers for a moment. “Yes, some. A normal amount.”

“What do you consider normal?”

“Not eating it with a serving spoon?”

Jooseppi gives a small sigh and puts a modest spoonful of ajvar next to his pile of rice. The riders dig into their carbs and proteins, some choosing chicken, some going for fish, with varying amounts of enthusiasm.

“I don’t like this sport anymore,” Jooseppi sighs.

Solveig swallows a mouthful of potato. “You say that every time they don’t let you eat what you want.”

“Because it’s true! Just look at the race, it’s all so… so… flat. There’s barely even a hill in sight!” The look of disgust on his face makes some of the others laugh. “What difference does it make what I eat anyway? I suck at day races, I suck when it’s flat.”

Nicola closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. “Jooseppi Jyrki Uusitalo. I swear, one day I am going to strangle you.”

“Is that a promise or a threat?” Artemis asks around a piece of fish.

***

An hour later, it’s press conference time, with Nicola, Solveig, Artemis and Ilcarthon attending.

“Thank you for coming tonight,” Nicola starts, “this is terra incognita for most of us, first race as this team, first time outside of Pavola, so bear with us.”

“Could you introduce us to the team a bit?” A reporter asks.

“Alright, so, here next to me is Solveig Skora, team captain, and our biggest hope for the stage races. Next to her, Artemis Moorcroft, our classics specialist, so you might be seeing a lot more of her during this race and the next few as well. On the far end, Ilcarthon Trewarne, sprinter extraordinaire. We have six other muppets in the back, but I’m not sure how safe they are to be let out to the press.”

The journalists laugh. The ice is broken.

“Looking at the race profile, it is mostly flat, but somewhat winding roads along the coast to Ebor, what do you see as the biggest challenge?”

“The wind,” Artemis says. “We did a light ride earlier and depending on the direction, that wind came in rather fiercely. I just hope it won’t get too gusty, otherwise this could get ugly when the peloton is close together.”

“What’s your secret tactic for the race?”

Nicola smiles. “If I told you, it wouldn’t be all that secret anymore, would it? We know that it’ll be a tight one because it’s mostly flat, so there are not a whole lot of possibilities to really tear the field apart, so we’ll have to be vigilant as to what’s happening at the front. The last thing we want is for a group to escape and us being too far behind and boom, you can lose the race right there.”

Another reporter raises his hand. “You said that Artemis is your team’s classics specialist. Does that mean that your race tactic revolves around her?”

Nicola glances over at Artemis. “Yes and no. She’s the best at these races, and she has a great nose for what to do when things get chaotic, but we’re not putting nine riders on the road just to escort one to the finish.”

“Well, eight, not sure Jooseppi counts,” Solveig chimes in. The room laughs again.

“So, who is your protected rider?”

“It all depends on how the race goes and what it looks like fifty kilometres out,” Nicola says. “It depends if there’s a break and one or two of our riders make it into the leading group, if the wind picks up, if the sprinters are still there, we have options we’re keeping open.”

“What if there’s a bunch sprint?”

Nicola looks toward Ilcarthon. “That guy.”

Ilcarthon grins. “I’ve been told many, many times that my only job is to go real fast in a straight line.”

“Yes, he’s been told that,” Nicola nods.

“And what if the line is not straight?”

“Then I’ll improvise. Don’t forget, we also have Síofra and Andrew who can help set things up, so I’m not going to be alone out there.”

Artemis sighs. “And that’s why we’re not telling the press the secret tactic.”

Ilcarthon cocks his head. “Because we don’t have one?”

“Exactly.”

Nicola shakes her head slowly. “I’m starting to regret bringing any of you…”

Jacob Soren - The flashy headline-grabber of the team. More likely to punch up in a Time Trial or one-day event.

Anouluck Keosinthavone - If someone is going to try and break away, it will be him.

Shonwahnonkon Thompson - The all-rounder domestique.

Ri Nam-jo - More of a climber than anything else.

Team sponsor: Énergïya-Poştalıq Odaq [BEPO] is the largest corporation in Barkhastan and has concerns including oil and natural gas extraction, refineries, transportation, as well as incorporating the privatised postal services of the newly independent post-Soviet republic. Though officially a private enterprise, it retains many links with the state; its chairman of the board, Kholmatzhon Sakenov, is son-in-law of President Akmetzhan Sakenov, and former oil minister Iskander Samatev is its CEO. These close connections between the Sakenov government and Énergïya-Poştalıq Odaq were evident during the team’s launch event in Jizkand, the Barkhastani capital, where Minister of Sportswashing Tursünbek Tashmatov appeared and gave a defiant speech congratulating the team on its venture.

The team has several co-partners. One such partner is Nexor Emergent. By operationalizing hyper-converged, forward-integrated methodologies, Nexor dynamically optimizes end-to-end value drivers across agile, high-friction verticals. Their mission centres on empowering holistic, best-of-breed modalities to proactively transform actionable deliverables, driving cloud-native, friction-free alignment for global stakeholder landscapes. Through frictionless, core-competency integration and continuous, enterprise-grade iteration, mission-critical impact is seamlessly delivered to future-proof the global narrative. Another partner is Tamaq-Yüm. They make food.

The team’s official crypto partner is SqamQoin.

Leadership: Francobalkan cycling veteran Vittorio Verucchi has been named team DS. An illustrious career saw Verucchi banned by 24 of the world’s most prestigious cycling races. He will be assisted by medical director Juan Miguel Tramadol, who recently oversaw an intensive pre-season conditioning retreat in the Montesorin Ores, and team doctors Stan O’Zolol and Hugh Mann-Growth-Hoare-Mone. The director of high performance is We Do Ping, delivering a unique blend of ancient eastern herbal remedies and modern nutritional supplements. Hanna Khamadova is Vice-President of Corporate Communications for Cover-ups, Scandal Management, and Spin at Énergïya-Poştalıq Odaq, and will handle the team’s outreach and social value engagement.

Kit: The jersey has a sky blue body (the national colour of Barkhastan) with red sleeve patches (symbolising the blood of Team EPO flowing through the riders) and name of sponsor printed across the centre in block gold lettering; black shorts; white helmets. While this is the default uniform, several riders will wear different kit:
  • Jan Scheurer will wear the Kordavian national champion’s kit (black with red stripes; helmet is silver with an iron eagle emblazoned on it); Jottr Kellringer will wear the skinsuit version of this during time trials
  • Miguel Ángel Tejedor will wear the Montesorin national champion’s kit (purple, white, and red bands with a golden sun in the centre, gold helmet)
  • Gianni Tassone will wear royal blue trim on his kit, indicating he is the former Francobalkan national champion
  • Žarko Periša will wear white trim on his time trial skinsuit, as the former Crnokrajian national time trial champion
Rider roles:
  1. Jan Scheurer GC specialist, not really punchy enough to contest for the classics so will spend the first half of the season keeping his powder dry for the stage races.
  2. Miguel Ángel Tejedor Just 5’4”, the diminutive climbing specialist lacks the power engine to compete in TTs. If Scheurer is in competition for the podium, expect Tejedor to be his primary mountain domestique; if not, he may be given licence to target stages himself.
  3. Karsten Thor Ranselmeier Road captain. Veteran of numerous Kordavian road races; has punched riders from 19 different countries during the course of his career. While unlikely to target individual glory, expect him to be marshalling the team in the peloton.
  4. Gianni Tassone Erratic sprinter, known for his leonine mane of hair, exuberant celebrations, and toxic attitude when losing. Heavily dependent on a strong leadout, which Team EPO can’t really provide for him so expect him to spend much of his time trying to poach other team’s leadouts. He will be team leader for the Trofej Gazvoda.
  5. Žarko Periša Leadout rider for Tassone. While feted in his own country, Periša doesn’t have Tassone’s race instincts (or ego) and so is more likely to serve as leadout than challenge for his own wins.
  6. Arnaldo Di Giotto All purpose workhorse, particularly skilled at cobbles and dirt tracks and as such will handle a lot of classics domestique duties to keep Scheurer and Tassone safe.
  7. Jottr Kellringer Pretty much a pure TT specialist. His power means he’s theoretically a competent sprinter, but as a recent track convert his bike handling is poor.
  8. Onufri Yermolayev The only rider on the team with international experience; he came 51st in the men’s road race at the Olympics in Liventia 8 years ago. Now in the twilight of his career, and clearly on the team more to provide a Barkhastani presence than for any real chance of victory.
  9. Gabriel Prašnikar Youngster climber still learning his trade. The team’s youngest rider, will compete for any young rider classifications, but more likely to target stages.

Team Dossier
Name: Équipe Trois-Fleurs
Headquarters: Z'ai'ai, Mountain District, Chromatika

Management Staff

Owner: Gloria Florian, 48
Born into money from a family of mine owners around Z'ai'ai, Gloria's mark upon the Florian legacy was to get into philanthropy around the Mountain District and develop this team, the biggest cycling team in Chromatika.

Sports Director: Hans Zimbani, 51
An avid fan of cycling from the moment Chromatika embraced being open to the world, Zimbani learned from the world around them and took his talents back home. He is a visionary who can be a bit sparse in detail, but the passion he has for the sport and for Chromatika's place in it is memorable.

General Manager: Madeleine Garnier, 40
The yin to Zimbani's yang, Garnier is a taskmaster who loves to plan and get immersed in the details. The two have known each other for a long time, and know each other very well - Madeleine being like a younger sister to Hans. She is who the cyclists work with on a daily basis.

Physio: Marc Puignot, 29
A young physio who is rather good at his job, and not much else. Very devoted to his work and to keeping up with the latest updates.

Cyclists

Cyclist 1: Myung Hyun-Jung, 28 (F)
Specialty: GC Contender
Description: An intense, extremely professional athlete whose entire existence is bent on winning. Can be a bit socially aloof, but makes up for it with steady, quiet leadership. Takes results very personally and tries to adapt as much as possible. The leader of this team, and a key part of the reason why the Management thinks the team could do well in this Tour.

Cyclist 2: Helena McLeod, 23 (F)
Specialty: Helper
Description: A model during the offseason, McLeod brings a steady, calming presence on the team alongside her sublime beauty. Having lived in the Mountain District her entire childhood, is one of the leaders of cycling in the mountains, but doesn't rub that in anyone's face. An active peacemaker, McLeod will often run towards conflict within the squad with the aims of putting out the fire and reaching a consensus to go forward.

Cyclist 3: Gustav Partins, 30 (M) (YSP)
Specialty: Helper
Description: The veteran on this squad, Partins is a lean, tall beanstalk who lets his actions do all the talking for him, being the quietest on the team. The only one who can come close to outracing Okasato in the mountains, Partins does well in controlling his breathing in the altitudes. Don't ask him to be a voice in public, but other than that, he's good for whatever else you need. He is also the only foreigner on the team, being a Yesopalithan who's been in Chromatika for five years. His experience in dealing with multiple species has given him great insight in dealing with different cultures and different peoples.

Cyclist 4: Georgina LaBelle, 19 (F)
Specialty: Flat
Description: The youngest on the squad, Georgina LaBelle is a flat specialist who knows how to put the pedal to the metal in the plains. Growing up in the Heartland, LaBelle was always into cycling; she was noticed three years in high school and made her way here. Doted on by the rest of the team, she's a hard worker who doesn't take anything for granted and is rather hard on herself when it comes to performance.

Cyclist 5: Troi Slemma, 21 (M)
Specialty: Time Trial
Description: A brusque, borderline rude person who is best used in very specific ways, Troi is someone who is on a journey of finding himself after a recent tragedy involving his fiancé who passed away in an accident. He's turned to cycling to help him get through the loss. The team is very aware of what's happened to him, and though it's not something that's taboo, they are really giving him some space. He knows where help is should he need it, though.

Cyclist 6: Victoria Maria Silva Anderson, 23 (F)
Specialty: Endurance
Description: She may not be the fastest cyclist, but she is the most consistent, and never runs out of energy. Soft spoken, Anderson puts everyone at ease and loves to be the social butterfly in any circle as the comfort giver. In races, she likes to just hang around until the very end, where she can take over with her endless reserve of energy.

Cyclist 7: Aya Okasato, 22 (F)
Specialty: Mountain
Description: The climbing/mountain specialist of this team, Aya grew up in a log cabin up in the mountains in Felswyr. In the winter, she skied, and in the summer, she rode bikes. She is the type to read a book for hours on end surrounded by nature when she's not training, preferring solitude unless she's spending time with her girlfriend. Not a total loner, but someone who prefers smaller crowds, she's in her element the best when racing up or down a mountain.

Cyclist 8: Aleena Kostodontych, 27 (F)
Specialty: Sprinter
Description: An edgy character with jet black hair who lives the life of someone who likes going very fast, Kostodontych is the sprinter of this group and very aware of it. She always lives life at max speed, even if it causes her to burn out at times, where she has to just get away from everyone for a bit. Argumentative at times, but not in a serious way, as she just likes to banter for no reason. She can be a lot, but she's good at her job.

Cyclist 9: Nikole Braun, 21 (F)
Specialty: Lead Out Man
Description: Perhaps the only person that Aleena gets along with all the time, Braun is a cheerful, bright soul who takes life as it comes to her. The other sprinter on the team, Nicole's demeanor changes on the race track as she isn't afraid to take risks to try to get in front of the opposition. Can get burned out, but with her combination of sprinting ability, handling, and aggressiveness, she's the one who can get them into better places.

"Ready?"

Madeleine Garnier, the Manager of Équipe Trois-Fleurs, entered the office of Hans Zimbani, the Sports Director. They had put together a team, trained for the better part of the last year, and were about to head to Mytanija to take part in the Tur Mytanija. Starting off with the Trofej Gazvoda, a race in which they'd need to utilize Georgina LaBelle at the front, they'd be involved in a cycling extravaganza the likes of which didn't quite exist in Chromatika yet.

"We're as prepped as we're going to be," answered Hans, "The chemistry is better than it was at the beginning - I never thought we'd be able to see Aleena see eye to eye with Myung - but they understand the task in front of them, and I'm excited to see just how the racing will go when the competition begins."

Director Gloria Florian had informed Hans and Madeleine that the goal for this Tour wasn't very grand - it was just to put Chromatik cycling on the map and see what their ceiling was. The implied undertone underneath that placid statement was that they were free to set their own goals for this initial Tour.

They would take it one race at a time, figure out how each team ran things, and adapt as necessary. Neither Hans nor Madeleine thought that they had everything figured out, and they were willing to humble themselves to see the options ahead of them. As long as they started to get things really going after the first quarter of the season, they had the opportunity to make up any ground they spent by learning the ropes.

"Do keep an eye on the courses we'll be racing on and whatnot to see how easy it'll be to schedule return trips in the future for practicing, and also to figure out how Mytanija sets up and maintains these courses," inquired Madeleine of Hans, "It'll help us a lot in the future, for sure."

It was nice that Chromatika was now in Rushmore - the travel time to Mytanija would be cut by quite a bit, and their planning return training camps in the future while Chromatika built cycling infrastructure made sense. He nodded in agreement.

An aide interrupted them from the door, saying that the team had gathered with their gear and they were ready to head to Chromia to take the jet that would take them to Mytanija.

This was going to be the most ambitious undertaking in Chromatik cycling history. They had no idea how well they'd do, but they knew that the most important thing to do in circumstances like this was to put yourself out there and see how things would go. Without the initial point of data, there was no chance of improvement nor change.

As Hans and Madeleine picked up their goods to walk outside, he took one last look at his office. He wouldn't be back for a while - and when he did, he'd be a changed man.

It was time to go race.

OOC: Georgina LaBelle is assigned team leader bonus for Trofej Gazvoda.

What you need to know about Spooner's Team SLTA-BetRalph

Full team name: Spooner's Team Service liventien de transports aériens–BetRalph
Main base: Bede, Liventia
The Spooner's Team SLTA-BetRalph has been created as an international superteam, formed of Liventia's best domestic road cyclists, and is one of the few officially mixed-gender sports teams in Liventia. It does not compete on the domestic ProTour, and to stay completely neutral, the team specifically searched out sponsors who do not also sponsor a Liventian ProTour team. For the Mytanar swing of events, the team have selected three national team cyclists from the last Olympics – Damien Lavigne, Jeff Lewis, and Louisa du Toit – to complement six other men's riders selected from the ProTour.

Team headline sponsor: Spooner's
Spooner's is a popular supermarket chain in Liventia with stores all over Liventia, ranging from SuperSpooner's (large, two-floor, single-site supermarkets) to ExpressSpooner's (small corner supermarkets), situated at the cheaper end of the price range. Spooner's was brought on as the headline team sponsor as the chain hopes to open abroad and views this as a useful marketing strategy. The chain is headquartered in Bede, and therefore the team's main base is also in that city.

Team secondary sponsor: SLTA (Service liventien de transports aériens)
SLTA is Liventia's main domestic carrier, operating as a standalone affiliated subsidiary of the national flag carrier, Liventia Airways. Originally founded in Orean (Oréan) by the Francophone Louis Riner, it was bought by Liventia Airways after just 12 years of independent operations. SLTA flies only twin-propeller planes in its fleet as it does not have international flights, with its operational hub in Schimpol and serving Orean, City Centre, Folenisa, and other major cities. It has decided to sponsor the team as it looks at expanding its footprint to some slightly longer-distance regional flights.

Team tertiary sponsor: BetRalph
Ralph's Casinos are ubiquitous, with at least two major locations in every big Liventian city. BetRalph is the chain's online gambling platform which operates across Rushmore. As it seeks more operating licenses in new countries, it has decided to "grow the brand" by sponsoring the Liventian superteam.

The riders
It's no surprise that Lavigne and du Toit will be the designated leaders for most of the stage races. However, for the season-opening Gazvoda Trophy, the team will work for sprinter Jacob Whittaker, with Riley Newmont his main lead-out man.

As Peet Morsman was still chugging down his recovery drink, Nurme already was talking him through his view of the race. In the last few seasons, Peet's lack of wins for himself had turned him into a luxury helper for all sorts of leaders. As was the case with most top sprinters, Nurme's loss was the case of various reasons but never himself.

"I was in the right position, but then the NGADM guys came out of nowhere and boxed me in."

Still, he kind of liked Reio. Not that it mattered. In the twilight years of his career, serving a nice person was just a bonus. Still being in the thrill of the ride was what mattered.

"Crazy last two hours, man."

Nurme was not wrong. There had been an early, hopeless attack, mainly with local riders. But with still over seventy kilometers to go, the peloton got on an open road. The Mytanar top teams, potentially dissatisfied with a string of foreigners coming to pick up the trophies and pricemoney that was historically theirs, pushed to break up the group in echelons.

"Good job there."

They made the first echelon, but only three of them: Reio, Jaakko and Peet. Some would say it was a success, but others were nowhere to be seen. Most notably Nariman and Taavi, whose job it had been to guard the leader in that phase. While Nurme rambled on, Peet noticed that neither had stopped near them and the soigneurs. Taavi stood a bit further, his head down, probably second-guessing his life choices. Nariman was not around, as usual when you needed him.

"That sprint man, we really got through the corners well. But then, yeah. It's a miracle I still got fifth."

Peet nodded. He knew that was expected. Considering the lack of confidence in Qasim, Reio Nurme would be leader again for Severyan-Cassia. Obviously.

But what if Nurme did not get across Crni Vrh?

And what if Peet did?

At least, the reliable Veenberger thought, it would be far more quiet at the finish line.

The corners had put pay to any thought of following Žarko Periša, but Gianni Tassone trusted to his natural racing instincts – and, where necessary, to his liberal use of his elbows. He was able to get the right side of Peet Moorsman just to ensure that Reio Nurme was unable to come through the gap, though Gianni still found himself boxed in behind Ilcarthon Threwarne. A little shake from Gojko Grobelnik almost threw him to one side but he was able to adjust his line and powered through. Every nerve was jangling as he put his head down and threw his body, past Yan Monteiro. He felt his shoulders getting ahead of one, two, three. But still, there was Threwarne, and then, Gianni cut past him, and surged forward with, one, final, burst of speed. He raised an arm in triumph…

…as he snatched up one of the blueberry mini-muffins that he’d had his eye on since the queue for breakfast started forming. Cutting through the mass of hungry cyclists to ensure he got to the good stuff first had been tough work. He jammed the muffin into his mouth and sauntered over to inspect the fruit and cold meats. We Do Ping, the team’s director of high performances, wouldn’t be pleased with Gianni stuffing his face with carbs, but he felt it was earned after a tough day out in Visoravna.

The early break – into which Onufri Yermolayev had been permitted to go, getting a few valuable extra seconds’ exposure for the sponsors rather than any realistic hope of being part of a winning move – had been hauled back in easily enough, but then came the crosswinds and the attempts to string out the peloton. Some heroic work by Karsten Thor Ranselmeier and Arnaldo Di Giotto had kept things together for Team Énergïya-Poştalıq Odaq even as the echelons started to form, though in the event everything had come back together by the finish. They’d also kept Jan Scheurer safe as houses.

In the sprint for the line, Gianni had been able to stick Žarko before making his jump, but Threwarne – who didn’t seem to have a leadout man but had the advantages of being a Little Lightning Machine – came through like a train, and Gianni was never really in contention, half a wheel behind the Liventian Whittaker in second. It was still a podium, the first ever in Tur Mytanija for the team. They’d try again at Severyan-Cassia, where he would remain team leader. But for Gianni, nothing less than a win was good enough. Except a nice blueberry muffin, perhaps.

Honestly, couldn't have asked more from the team during this first race. We stayed with the pack, had five racers with the lead pack, and everyone within two seconds of the finish line. Georgina and Nikole's ability to handle both the flat terrain and the final sprint at the end gave them the edge needed, though I honestly expected Nikole to take more chances at the end. It looked like she wanted to be with Georgina this time around when it became clear that she had no chance of winning the race outright.

As for Aleena, she gained about twenty spots in the final spurt after leaving Troi in the dirt - but Troi, to his credit, did a lot in a race that doesn't really fit his style to be in the lead pack. Gustav seemed rather disappointed in himself, while Victoria was far more content with her result - and the likes of Aya and Helena, our mountain specialists, struggled as expected, along with Myung, the Captain of the team who was in his worst element.

Honestly, the way that the group cycled as a unit was the best thing for me to see as the Manager. They communicated with each other, they pressed each other on, and when it came to the end, they truly cycled together.

The hardest thing to get a group of Chromatik athletes to do is to be aggressive - and to figure out the timing with which they can be aggressive. The races to come will test our ability to adapt under different circumstances on different courses as we tour Mytanija before hitting the big races near the end of the season.

Though it wasn't a win, it was definitely a race that we learned a lot from - and with the fact that everyone came out of it looking okay without any nicks nor bruises, we'll take the result.

Next up is the Severyan-Cassia race, full of climbing, hills, and endurance. This is where Myung, Okasato, and Aleena can shine - the other half of the team. Aya was rearing to have a go at it as the climber of the entire team.

With a wealth of potential ahead of us and some well-earned experience behind us, I am also excited to see just how much one race being under our belts will impact the team going forward. Given how much of Chromatika is full of hills and mountains and uneven terrain, this shift to less of a flat ground will do the team good - and I'm excited to see just how that works out overall.

This tour is a marathon, not a sprint, after all.

Aya Okasato is the leader for Severyan-Cassia.

After narrow miss, Whittaker turns from leader to lead-out
Jacob Whittaker knew he might not get a better chance at putting his name out there.

A fairly consistent sprinter on the Liventian ProTour, Whittaker's ability to out-sprint his domestic opponents – including now-teammate Riley Newmont – earned him a selection for the Spooner's Team in the Tur Mytanija.

And, with an all-star team of ProTour stalwarts and Olympians working for him, Whittaker nearly pulled off the win at the opening Gazvoda Trophy, a flat one-day race where the outright sprinters such as Whittaker were expected to do well.

"Ultimately it was just that one-third of a wheel," he reflected afterwards. "Really, Riley did a great job in the lead-out and I managed to find the space. It's just a shame we couldn't mark our first appearance as a team with a win. And I'm not sure if I'm going to get that many more chances."

That comment was a veiled reference to the fact that for the hillier Severyan-Cassia classic – a mostly flat affair but with a punchy finish – Spooner's are expected to work for Newmont instead.

And the choice of Newmont is expected to stick for most of the remaining classics ahead of the stage-race segment of the Tur Mytanija season, with the occasional switch to perhaps Kyle Cross for the more taxing one-day races which may not end in an outright bunch sprint.

"I've got to thank Riley for today," Whittaker added. "We came really close, and of course we've not actually raced together before this superteam. Of course all nine of us have had training rides together but you've got to remember Riley and I are usually trying to elbow each other out of the way on the ProTour.

"Of course, I'll return the favour in Cassia. He's got the better endurance over the long flat before those late climbs and I'll just do my best to guide him along and if I'm there with him, hopefully, lead him out to a win."

"Thirty seventh. Best Paradystopi out there, Erroropolisish or otherwise. Just think what I could've achieved with a bit more support! C'mon boss, give me a chance for the Cassia-Seventy-Whatever, I got this!"

"Lyndon, I see where you're coming from but honestly, it wouldn't be in the team's best interests. You've got to remember that there's the two climbs at the end and no offence, but whilst you're more than capable on the flat, my granny tackles the stairs better than you tackle the inclines, and she's ninety-two and wheelchair-bound. Surely you can see how the Severyan-Cassia falls firmly into Ausma's wheelhouse? No, the gameplan is to have two groups. One supporting Ausma, and a second supporting Sybil to make an early push. I've got you in the lead-out group with Sybil, Konstanz, and Ratko."

"So you want me to lead a false early charge, or something like that?"

"Something like that, yes. Look, to be perfectly honest, we're testing the waters presently. Trying to glean what will be our best units for the Tur Mytanija with half an eye on the Tur Magevskaya and the Tur Nasto. We're wanting everyone to be building up their fitness so as to peak at the right time, okay?"

"But boss, give me ..."

"Lyndon, that's my decision, okay? You get behind Sybil, the team is behind Ausma. If you get a decent breakaway, by all means try and capitalise."

"So you're saying I'm allowed to breakaway?"

"I know what you're thinking but no. An early charge for Sybil needs to be plausible in the eyes of the other teams to give them something to think about. Not half the Paradystopi team racing against themselves."

"Yeah yeah, sure, fine, cool. Can I go?"

"Yes, but, Lyndon... ?"

"Yep?"

"Don't fuck things up for us, please?"

"I'll try."

"Yes, that's what worries me ..."

The crowd in Ebor is deafening as the large peloton pulls into the last turns before the final straight. It is chaos. Controlled chaos. Síofra and Artemis are at the spear point, pulling Ilcarthon behind them. Several other teams are jostling them, trying to get their sprinters into position, shoulders and elbows rubbing and pushing. The turns are like eyes of a needle, thinning the group out of sheer physical necessity, but nobody wants to be the one giving in.

In the next to last turn, Artemis gets a push that unbalances him momentarily and he barely avoids one of the advertising hoardings that keep the frantic crowd at bay. Losing his momentum, he has to let go and it all narrows down to Síofra and Ilcarthon for Bloodthorn Energy. The final turn; they both manage to remain just to the outside of another near crash. She starts to initiate, with Liventian Spooner's SLTA-BetRalph’s Riley Newmont doing the same for Jacob Whittaker.

The street narrows down to what feels like a mere pathway as Síofra’s sole focus becomes the finish line in the mid-distance, trying to give Ilcarthon enough of a slipstream. It gets frantic, with other teams attempting to position their sprinters as well. Síofra pulls to the side, her legs strained to their limit and the bloodred jersey of Ilcarthon sweeps by together with a blur of colours.

It is only the sprinters now, Ilcarthon, Whittaker, Tassone, Pollitt, Nurme, Auer. One wrong move could spell disaster not just for one of them but all. The crowd’s noise fades away as instinct takes over, tactics no longer a factor. Nurme launches first, with Ilcarthon and Whittaker reacting quickly to stay on his wheel.

As the finish line creeps closer, they all feel the burn in every muscle, their vision pinpointed ahead, hoping nobody will make a stupid move. Auer pushes to the side, trying to break away, but the moment he’s in the wind, his momentum falters briefly. The line is coming closer and they fan out, each trying to vie for the precious centimetres. Bodies snap forward in a desperate attempt to gain the edge.

They cross the line and nobody knows who won.

***

A few minutes later, Ilcarthon is on his back in the back of the team van, too exhausted to talk. Everybody is still waiting with bated breath for the final announcement of the winner after a photo finish that was way too close to call. Then, hurried footsteps approach, Alex, who had bowed out halfway into the race after pulling a muscle, limps over as quickly as he can, face red, eyes wide.

“WE GOT IT! WE GOT IT!” he exclaims.

All heads swivel toward him.

“WE WON!”

“They haven’t announced anything yet,” Solveig furrows her brow.

“I snuck past race control and I saw them stitch together the images. Ilcar made it!”

Immediately, the team breaks out in cheers, drawing bewildered stares from other teams around them. Moments later, the PA crackles and the organizers announce the official result, confirming what Alex had gleaned just moments before.

“Someone carry me to the podium!” Ilcarthon groans from the back of the van.

***

The team is sitting around a topographic map of the Severyan-Cassia race, very different emotions playing over their faces.

“By the gods, this is stupidly long!” Ilcarthon groans. “I like that final sprint part, but how am I supposed to make it over those mountains that late in the race!”

Artemis chuckles. “Mountains? Hills, Ilcar, hills. But yeah, the broom wagon will scrape you off the Kamniti Vrh for sure. Unless we mollycoddle you through it all and somehow heave you to the finish straight.”

“We’ll burn that bridge when we get there,” Nicola sighs. The Bloodthorn director sportif stares at the profile of the classic race. “I think we’ll go three-pronged.”

“Trident, I like it,” Solveig smiles. “Who’ll be the prongs?”

“Artemis is perfect for this one. She has the endurance, can handle the hills and especially those steep descents.” Nicola looks at the raven-haired rider. “You can get through those tricky turns and keep up with the front. Not the best in the sprint, but I don’t think we’ll see a whole lot of sprinters making it over those two hills still in contention. So, you’re our number one for this race.”

“You.” She points at Ilcarthon. “I’m not ruling you out just yet. If we can get a big enough group together to get you over the hills in somewhat reasonable shape, you could be a menace at the end. Not trying to put pressure on you, but I like to keep you as an option. And you, Solveig, if all else fails, you’re a great allrounder, so if the sprinters fall off, you could swoop in.”

“I can’t sprint if my life depended on it!” she chuckles.

“Then you just have to be ahead enough not to have to,” Síofra quips, just to get hit in the side of the head with a balled up sock.

DNF 83 Helena McLeod (CMT) Équipe Trois-Fleurs
DNF 90 Nikole Braun (CMT) Équipe Trois-Fleurs

The story of this race was a tale of two halves of the team. The two groups that raced well together, and the final pair that didn't finish the race. The top two were those that were expected to do well in this kind of a race, the flat parts of the course playing to Victoria and Aleena's strengths - Aya doing rather well to keep with the top pack. Troi and Gustav were a bit behind the pace, and Georgina and Myung struggled a bit - but it was the racing of one Nikole Braun that was concerning.

Nikole is one of our bikers most likely to make a move too early and burn herself out, and that was what happened here. She made a move in the middle of the race, got burned out, and with the crosswinds being too much and being too far away from the lead pack, she decided to call it a day. Disappointing for a racer that was expected to do a lot with this particular race - along with one Helena, who was involved in a crash and not able to continue.

Thankfully, Nikole was in decent spirits after the race. We're very well aware of her aggressive profile, and after talking through what she saw before trying to make the move that she did, we all agreed that she was correct to attempt the move that she did - even if the execution wasn't the best.

The way that the tour staff handled the DNF situations for our team was very professional and well-put together, and I must compliment the way that Mytanar cycling is set up. They made sure that everyone was okay without overstepping the bounds of what a team should be able to handle, coordinated with our team's training staff regarding all things medical, and overall just helped us with the situation at hand without making a big deal out of it when it pertained to the race at large. Coming from a country where such professional infrastructure isn't yet available for our sport, it was a wake-up call for me to be able to dictate in the future what I'd like to see in this sport that I've made my career.

Perhaps the most embarrassing aspect of this race in general was that we didn't pay attention to just how long the flat stretches would be. Though we were ready for the climbing that occurred near the end, I could've done a much better job in preparing the team for the fact that it was a mostly flat race. We will absolutely learn from this and provide better preparation for the task at hand moving forward, starting with Ciezin-Prizren.

This is the climbing race. This is the race that Myung was built for, and he'll lead the team - along with Aya and Helena - as we try for our first top ten, and maybe even podium, finish.

I'm really glad there are all these one-day races for us to get ready for the grueling task that await us near the end.

Myung Hye-Jung is the leader for Clezin-Pizren.

Francine Robiquet will be Magnier-BadenMarkt team leader for Ciezin-Prizren.

The varied landscape of Mytanija, even in just two races, had already offered two entirely different challenges to the cyclists who had come from across the multiverse to compete. First, the thrilling sprint finish of the Trofej Gazvoda, where the peloton had refused to allow the breakaway its chance at glory. Then, the grueling Severyan-Cassia, where after sticking together up two big climbs, the breakaway found itself strung out down the long final descent, and the riders crossed the finish line singly and in pairs.

The best result for the Reçuecians was Mia Rechthild, who had crested Kamniti Vrh with the breakaway, but lost half a minute on the descent as Tassone attacked. Still, Rechthild had finished in the top ten, which encouraged at least a little hope that on another day when the Magnier-BadenMarkt riders could work together better, they might have even more propitious results.

The Reçuecian team, however, had so far struggled to support any one rider to particular effect. Rechthild had some help from Pascal Gervais, who took a turn leading the breakaway up Črni Vrh before dropping back. But she was also accompanied by Fiore Loreto, who stayed on her wheel up Kamniti Vrh and refused to help pull despite her repeated requests. In the end Mia had the last laugh, dropping him right before the crest. In the end, she could claim her result in the Severyan-Cassia was mostly due to her own endurance and speed, being able to hang with the attackers up both climbs with little help from her teammates. But Magnier-BadenMarkt will have to find a way to work together better than that if it wants to make any sort of challenge for the KoM or general classification when the tur finally rolls around.
