Season 101 Winter Break

The Winter Break
Now Is The Season of Our Discount Tents

The SteuerLig takes a little holiday

It's that time of the year between the autumn and spring schedules when The SteuerLig closes down for a few weeks in order for the players to get off on their trips for mid-season 'training camps' in warmer climes, like the sandy beaches of Ipanema or the plush pasturelands of southern Mustardy. At TAX Magazine we get no such lucky sunshine breaks and here on the sports desk we've been preparing a couple of articles to keep everyone going in the absence of some half-decent football. How is the World's Most Expensive Goalkeeper getting on in combat formations? What is our favourite Deltic philosopher-coach up to these days, and are his bullet wounds giving him any gip? Read on to find out this, and more.

The Clench
Enda & The Tent City Blues

The Continuing Adventures of Enda Clentin

The Deltic Uncivil War is over! The Rake Teinton Women's Institute are defeated! Huzzah!
In this series we have charted the second coming of Deltic coach Enda Clentin, inventor of the World Cup-winning Stoicpress, successful head coach of Delte and Gnejs, victim of the Uncivil War who nearly died several times of drowning, head injuries and bullet wounds - mostly inflicted by his ex-missus Brenda, who is still at large. After washing up on the shores of Taxhavn, being reunited with his step son Emlyn Blymmin - the cable guy - and a year off in recovery after another assassination attempt by Emlyn's rogue mum, learning how to talk again, how to judge distance with only one eye, how not to be afraid of floodlight towers and how to hang a pair of glasses on his ears when one of them was shredded by Brenda's bullets, what is he up to these days?

A man often caught up in social causes despite a distinct lack of interest in social causes, the former PE teacher at Oswark Grammar School was talked out of retirement last season by Gnejsian superstar striker Georg Bardo, partner of GnejsCo, the multi-club organisation that had recently acquired, among others, the refugee team Aubinsville Kickers. His job would be to lead on the new SteuerLig part of the refugee project - the Pro Kickers. They had paid for a place in Division Four and would effectively replace near neighbours Lithico St. Bernadine™ who had withdrawn from the league in protest, sparking the Bay of Greedy Pigs War. Fortunately for Enda, the Kickers stadium, The Shanty, in Aubinsville Tent City, was deemed unfit for use in the Trumpanzee Garbage Division Four so the Pro Kickers had temporarily relocated to Bizarro Park, just off Soccer Island and outside the occupation zone when the Lithico™ chopper invasion began. Right now the Pro Kickers were doing alright, mid-table in Division Four in their debut season - but not, as it happens, with The Clench in charge. Bontsi Kabelano, a milkman from Tent City (before that, the fallen state of Ossidiacqua) and Enda's appointed assistant is doing a good job of covering for his boss. But what's happened to Enda?

Well, he can now add 'kidnap' to his growing list of unfortunate experiences, and I'm sure he's also hoping he can soon put 'and ransom' after it on his CV. It hasn't happened yet but a deal is on the table for sponsors of the Pro Kickers, including goat cheese billionaire Fandango Molineux (the III), to cough up a sizeable fee to get him back in one piece. Well, most of one piece. He wasn't fully one piece went he got snatched, given what he's been through in recent years.

Anyway.

In a previously unpublicised piece of foul play by the Lithico™ army of lawyers, it seems the occupying usurpers launched a covert operation to the mainland and Enda's place - a billion shilling apartment in St. Bernadine city overlooking the bay which he shares with his billionaire step-son Emlyn Blymmins, the broadcast and streaming tech genius also known as 'The Cable Guy'. Employing a secret agent gun-for-hire with unique skills in home invasion (Agent B2), who happened to be Emlyn's mother and somehow had the access codes to his apartment, Brenda Blymmins snatched Enda under threat of death (she'd already attempted to kill him at least three times, so she wasn't joking) and took him back to Soccer Island, landing on the very beach where the Special Tax Service would soon meet their ignominious end.

So far as we know Brenda hasn't killed him, as the Lithico lawyers are running a back channel negotiation to ransom him back in exchange for certain Banks of Taxhavn account numbers.

The Measure of a Man Is Six Yards Wide
Notes From The Goal Line

The Continuing Adventures of Custodio Reverso

Gap Year For The Record Breaker:
It must be an uncomfortable fact of life for the Farf goalkeeper Custodio Reverso, 34, that he has become a cult character and legend in his own lifetime... for all the wrong reasons. For the fourth consecutive season he has broken the divisional transfer record - but each season, it's in a lower division and for about a quarter of his value the previous season. Starting with a ₸x39m shilling league record move to Kierhuizen Boys, this season he signed from third tier McCunnald FC to fourth tier Lithico St. Bernadine™ for ₸x577,000 - a division four record transfer fee. Nevertheless he must've been excited to sign up with a team owned by his home nation, and connect with people from his own culture, even if it was in the unfortunate circumstance of Lithico's triple punishment relegation for tapping up offences and calling the executive committee of FA-Tax 'greedy pigs'. For Custodio, it should've been an opportunity to reunite with the administrator-coach Yzho Lal Da, the man who helped broker his move from La + Querida to The Boys at the start of his monumental decline, and perhaps help to reverse the slide. But things have a way of slipping out of Custodio's hands. Before he'd even dropped a ball in anger, Lithico withdrew from the league in protest at their multiple demotions. All players were given the opportunity to find a loan club for a season, pending the expected return of Lithico to the top flight for next season. Custodio managed to get a deal that reversed his general arc of disappointment by signing for a team higher up in the third tier, recently promoted energy drinks-sponsored village club Supersaurus! (exclamation mark included). Unfortunately after his first introductory training session it turned out The Fizzies had made an admin error and forgotten about another goalkeeper they had registered, and sent Custodio back to SoccerLand, Lithico's base. In further bad timing, Custodio was last man through the checkpoint before the Lithico™ lawyers closed the Golden Boot Bridge, having invaded Soccer Island while Custodio was on the bus back from Supersaurus! village (aka Plettenförde).

So now he's behind enemy lines, with his club out of the league and the home stadium sort of on fire (but not in a way that stadiums burn in Farfadillis, despite the occupiers best efforts). Fortunately - or unfortunately, it depends how things turn out I suppose - Custodio did have a prior occupation he can fall back on: he was a child soldier in the endless civil wars of his homelands. I can't tell you if he was any better at soldiering than he is at goalkeeping, but given the nature of the work and the fact he's still alive with all his limbs intact suggests he probably was better at soldiering. Fans of Custodio and his spiralling career will be hoping he at least makes it out of this alive to continue his keeper antics into the lower regional leagues, although most of them of course are backing Taxhavn in the Bay of Greedy Pigs War. Our sources on the island tell us that Lieutenant Reverso is now a training and tactical officer in the Lithico Boys Bridgade™, Tent City Regiment, Aubinsville Barracks. Early results - a spectacularly shocking victory over the Special Tax Service at Soccer Beach - suggest he may have found his level.

SteuerLig-100
Part 3/4: A Freezing Cold Tuesday Night In St. Albyn

Winter is fading on the Isle of Taxhavn, although I have to repeat that headline is for dramatic effect only, as it never gets freezing cold at these latitudes. It's just a way of saying the mid-season break is over, and battle recommences as we approach the sharp end of the season. The regular feature of the Winter Rules, instigated to cheer fans up in poor weather has been and gone, but probably the damage has been done to poor old Orchideeën and their title challenge. Will they even make the Challengers Cup?

The Bay of Greedy Pigs
Economic Warfare

Punching each other in the wallet until one folds

SOCCER ISLAND - buoyed by their success against the Special Tax Service and in Operation Clench to kidnap Enda Clentin, the army of lawyers from Lithico™ have gone on the offensive in the war caused by a football dispute. Chief attorney for the prosecution of the war, Major Zöglör, has obviously switched his tactics to economic warfare as he first attempted to take control of St. Bernadine Bay, blockading the entrances to the ports of Cleffort, Ours, Pynnoke, Vigar and North Städeli with small launches. The outboard dinghies were posted to disrupt the ten kilometre entrance of the large natural harbour of St. Bernadine, harrassing cargo ships, tankers and fishing fleets with hit-and-run shelling from small-bore machine guns smuggled in on choppers with the legal papers that were supposed to be going to the courts for the case against FA-Tax. After only half a day of zipping about like a bunch of pirates, looking ill-disciplined and yet in the final analysis cleverly strategic in their randomness, traffic in and out of the harbour was all but ended, as seasoned mariners refused to risk being sunk by the Lithico™ paralegal secretaries and their pesky outboard launches. After his lunch the commander of the Wightling patrol boat Swampthing got fed up listening to the reports on the radio and took his ship out of the dock at Cleffort, and demonstrated superior and merciless seamanship, with bigger and better guns, to obliterate several of the Lithico launches and chase the rest back onto Soccer Island. He shelled the burning Lithico stadium for good measure just to make a point.

But the army of lawyers weren't done yet.

Taxhavn authorities weren't moving terribly quickly on negotiating a release for kidnapped Enda Clentin in exchange for a range of Banks account numbers, so Major Zöglör took matters into his own hands with a bunch of hackers coming in from Farfadillis on the last helicopter. The digital warfare unit were quickly deployed on serious operations to get into Banks of Taxhavn via whatever means necessary, including some industrial espionage from the inside - months before, it seems, Lithico™ had infiltrated major clearing houses during the Bizarro World Cup, and they were now pulling levers to get the hackers inside bank securities. Banque Ghentian-Lhullier was the first to report holes being blown in their virtual vaults, while Banque Sept-Nat said it would have to turn the computer off at the wall to save the company and the Isle of Taxhavn literally quadrillions of shillings of losses from hostile withdrawals. Several other major banks had to bail out of the internet altogether to save themselves. Ghentian-Lhullier announced it had been emptied out before it could find the right plug to unplug. A major financial crash is in the offing. At half-past nine on Thursday evening the government of Taxhavn confirmed it would make FA-Tax come to the table. Lithico™ had almost won the football war - by hitting Taxhavn in the wallet. Hard. In another hour, Ghentian-Lhullier went under. The commander of the Swampthing spent the rest of the evening trying to move his own money out of Taxhavn, but found the digital warfare unit on Soccer Island had slowed the internet to a crawl. He ordered a salvo fired on the Lithico World Cup stadium, just out of frustration.

Did Somebody Say 'Takeaway'?
Five Things We Learned In Rounds 20-29

It's official: we have a Big Two

Supercollider - Deltic FC and Septentriennes have certainly reasserted themselves as the 'Big Two' of the times - as the Big Three (Raven Thöni, FC Städeli and Standard Lily) mostly fade into inconsequence, and the future Big One - Lithico St. Bernadine™ allegedly, or ASMV St. Bernadine appararently, depending on who you ask - have yet to wipe the floor with anyone, we have two fantastic teams going toe-to-toe for every prize in The Exiles and The Bankers. Septentriennes may sit fourth and a bit of a distance behind Deltic and ASMV at this point, but they are smashing everyone off the park now as they build momentum for a famous run in, while the Delts themselves are patiently grinding out the results as reigning champions with their eyes firmly set on retaining the prize. These are the teams of the moment, simply better than everyone else.

Dragonball - ASMV St. Bernadine have enjoyed a season under the radar where all the controversy of the league is focused on their deadly absentee rivals Lithico St. Bernadine™, what with the war and all that. There don't seem to have been as many refereeing controversies having gone their way this season, a real area of suspicion in recent seasons - or is it that we've all become slightly tolerant to the favouritism? Are they still getting considerably more RAD (remote assisted discipline) decisions in their favour than anyone else? Maybe. What's for sure is a team of largely tapped-up players is unquestionably producing some good football, and a late charge into the Champions League slots has been entertaining for all the right reasons, as well as the wrong ones.

Heavy Rolling - HPV Waallen endured a disappointing season last time out and it took a while to get going this time under new head coach Archie Ruggles-Pompey Senior, but it feels like he is beginning to restore them to their very best version of themselves. The Heavies have had to adapt to life without talismanic leader Carloto Desmonceaux, who left at the end of last season to return to his homeland; his replacement, the young star of Taxhavn junior World Cup squads Ivo Gyll, has been groomed for a couple of seasons as his successor and do you know, he's not too shabby. Not too shabby at all. While the HPV strike force is not the most proficient in the top half of the table, you feel it will come and one thing they do impress with is how hard they are to beat. Once Gyll and his strike partner Vincent Baar reach peak cooperation, this could be a really good team indeed.

Fade Away - FC Städeli's brief flirtation with the idea of a championship is over as the Frigates have faded badly since the winter break, with the regular rules seeming to put them firmly back in their place. Whilst still in a healthy position for a final flourish and an interregional placement, form is against them now and mid-table mediocrity beckons once more for one of the great old sides of the SteuerLig era. The early Nelis Fijnewever era might've shown some green shoots in the ashes of some poor recent seasons, but real success still looks a distant memory and a distant prospect for the future. Like Raven Thöni and Standard Lily, their great rivals of the Big Three Golden Era, they are still working out how to win back significance. Here's a suggestion - spend more money. There's plenty of it. Because Taxhavn.

Unbelievable - Sturm Havn looked dead and buried going into the winter break but perhaps a good long chat between coach Adam Ackeret and his two principle midfield stars Archie Ruggles-Pompey Jr. and Paradystopian Lenny Lugga to clear the air and work out how to play together has done the trick. With six wins in the last nine games, The Cyclones have caught up with the pack and put themselves right in the game to avoid relegation. Unbelievable! There's still work to be done - they're only a point from safety - but they are the form team in the bottom seven and while they might not avoid a relegation play-off, they'll go into the run-in brimming with confidence, with two class midfielders finally working together to control football matches.

IFCF Knockout Stages
Deltic FC become the first Taxhavnite side to reach the Champions League final as their season is the one that keeps on giving. Key to their success has been their form at home, although for interregional games they have moved from their temporary home at the Romainring to the much bigger and even more temporary arena in Thöni, the Bezirkerstadion. Three wins in three there were enough to progress the one-time Challengers Cup winners to a final against FTC United of Zwangzug. They will not be the only IFCF finalists from the isle though, with Orchideeën keen to remind everyone that despite having a poor domestic season, they are head to head with Septentriennes for the 'most successful Taxhavn club of all time'. Adding to their claims will be a first Associations Trophy final appearance, while Septentriennes fall at the semi-final stage in the Cup Winners Cup after a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat in Pasarga. Completing a quadruple semi-final tally in IFCF competitions, Lions Bessendorf almost go all the way in the Liga-B Champions Trophy only to be well beaten by Chromatik opposition Tor. A good showing in the competition with two finalists and two semi-finalists will not be enough to preserve the league's fourth Champions League spot, but may go some way to winning it back in the future.

The 26th FFI Competitions
Taxhavnite clubs have a fantastic track record in the FFI competitions and it is another good showing in the tournament, principally by League of Victors reigning champions Septentriennes, who comfortably defeat Vennesberg United in the semi-final to keep a title defence on track. Both Deltic and Archimedes fall at the quarterfinal stages, while surprise Confederations Trophy entrant Sturm Havn perform brilliantly to reach the semi-final before a narrow defeat to Auprussian opposition, Ostissiennes getting past them at the final hurdle. The strong showing really boosted their league form too as they try to avoid relegation from the Solitary Soccer League.

Latter Rounds

With the two great modern rivals of Septentriennes and Deltic FC going so well on all fronts, it seems a fitting draw that these two will meet in the final of the Tax Cup - having opened the season in the Super Cup with a win for Septentriennes, they will bring the curtain down on the season in the Tax Cup final. What's more Deltic FC will be competing in the Champions League final as the first Taxhavn team to reach the summit of the interregional competitions, and Septentriennes will defend their League of Victors title in a second consecutive FFI final. With Deltic out in front in the league and Septentriennes finishing strongly from an indifferent first half of the season, these two sides are looking for a potential treble - historic times for the Solitary Soccer League's current superpowers.

The Football Tourists
An outside view from the inside

TAX Magazine reignites our conversation with our two favourite adventuring contributor[s] to the sports desk*

These segments are written by our by now well-known affiliates, dog-walker Karl-Johan Vaasa (63) and his good friend Knut Svensson (65), aided, of course, in no small measure by his dog Hardly-Knut.

The concept of Karl-Johan and Knut, and Hardly-Knut, themselves chronicling their relentless quest to visit every ground and stadium on the isles, was of course devised to allow readers to continue experiencing the timeless charm of these vagabonds, now in their own words.

However, it was also part of an ongoing efficiency and cost-cutting effort, seeing as Karl-Johan and Knut demanded no more compensation than the odd Shepherd's Pie, two pints of lager, and a muttonchop for Hardly-Knut, to go with whatever game they covered. They even declined the magazine’s offer to secure them proper lodgings on their travels, since “It’s not a proper away day if you spend the night,” as Karl-Johan resolutely put it.

It is safe to say all were most pleased with this arrangement.

In Our Own Words
The deep sleep of bonnie Adonis

MD-28 - OranjiLig-1: VVV Slagharen 5-0 Adonis Rensburg

We’ve always been of the mind that no team - no club, no crew, no ragtag bunch of Sunday ballers - would ever truly amount to much without their fans and supporters. Those brave men, women and the occasional child who stand beside the pitch with diligence and loyalty no matter what. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night and so on and so on.

Hardly-Knut tends to agree, although he has always maintained that an astute travel and logistics coordinator is even more important. So it goes.

What we can all agree on, however, is that the importance of support, of fans and community, a beating heart that essentially is the team, is perhaps never as pivotal as in the lower leagues.

It was therefore with great readiness and devotion that we travelled a few clicks south of Portugaal, in the eastern parts of the Oranjestadt peninsula up north, to watch our second favorite team play in the very last OranjiLig-1 match day between VVV Slagharen and Adonis Rensburg.

Because, oh boy, do they have fans and peculiar rituals up there.

Yes, they sure do.

But we’re not going to be talking about the Slags of the Triple V, as they affectionately call their team up here, today. We very well could have, no doubt, because the stories are plentiful. The haunted club house, for instance, where the ghost of old welder and part-time prostitute Beatrix allegedly rearranges the trophy cabinet every second Saturday, or the significance of the unusual fan tradition of pelting visiting teams with stroopwafels.

Alas, no.

On a day like today, we must transport ourselves elsewhere, in the mind if not physically. More specifically, we need to imagine ourselves travelling east of Maartenstadt and south of Steunberg, to a cove out by the coast looking out onto the endless Oranjizee.

For here, we find Rensburg, and the local football team Adonis Rensburg.

A quaint and quiet seaside town it is. Almost a part of what you could call the greater Maartenstadt metropolitan area, but not quite. Not that the locals mind, oh no, they’re perfectly happy being just Rensburg. As opposed to being ”the eastern outskirts of Maartenstadt”, and honestly who can blame them for that?

They’re used to being blamed though, the people of Rensburg. Not that it’s in any way their fault, but the waters out there are mighty treacherous, where hidden hazards and rapid weather changes make for confused and angry seas. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Figuratively, of course, there aren't actually any icebergs.

Nowadays, of course, captains and crew stay well clear of those waters, but in the good old days, before global positioning systems and digital nautical charts, numerous traders of the sea tried their hand at mooring their cogs in the cove of Rensburg, and met their demise because of it.

In many ways, the boisterous sea outside of the Rensburgundian cove has defined life in the quiet little hamlet. I’ve heard it’s a bit of a business enterprise, actually, taking bored city business men looking for a thrill out diving among the many shipwrecks dotting the seabed. If it weren’t for Hardly-Knut’s aversion to swimming, I think we would have enjoyed us a bit of that, but you can rarely have it all.

The shipwrecks aren’t just a staple of the local experience economy either, but also supply local artists and craftspersons with driftwood and other debris; there’s hardly an establishment along the water that doesn't advertise their products or services via a hefty piece of what used to be part of a ship. And the same goes for the local football club.

Interestingly, the club had already been called Adonis Rensburg for as long as anyone can remember, when that exquisitely carved figurehead of an extraordinarily beautiful young man washed ashore years back. Now, we’re not privy to the story of how the club came to be Adonis Rensburg in the first place, but it must’ve seemed written in the stars that this wooden hunk of the seas should become their symbol and good luck charm.

And so it was.

The new Adonis of Rensburg was first mounted over the shell-adorned door of the small cottage acting as clubhouse, but soon followed the tradition of dismounting him and bringing him to games to watch over the boys in crimson and pink. And how he traveled! Up and down and left and right and all over Oranjestadt and wherever the OranjiLig brought him and his merry men.

Thereafter came the rather unusual ritual of burying him at sea.

At some point towards the end of a season back in the days when Rensburg’s relegation down a tier was confirmed, someone proposed to mark the tragedy of it all by submerging sweet Adonis to the bottom of the sea, only to be retrieved again when Adonis Rensburg achieved promotion back to where they belonged.

I suppose it was meant to be a sacrificial offering, of sorts. Most likely to the sea itself, or maybe directed towards the reef goblins or some other arcane aquatic spirit. In either way, an ornate casket was carved out of a particularly sizable piece of driftwood, and down the depths fair Adonis went.

And as far as offerings go, it was a success. Adonis Rensburg quickly rebounded and were promoted at their first time of asking. Much laughter, joy and festivities accompanied the salvaging of splendiferous Adonis at the end of the season, and so the tradition was born. Whenever Adonis Rensburg were relegated, lovely Adonis was put in his casket and buried at sea, and whenever the boys in crimson and pink managed to achieve promotion, he was once again raised from the black depths.

The years went by, and while Adonis Rensburg occasionally slipped up and went down - prompting a return to the abyss for resplendent Adonis - they always came back up and mostly stayed a comfortable midtable OranjiLig, and eventually OranjiLig-1, team.

Until around ten or so years ago, when a disastrous calamity of a season saw the team relegated to the OranjiLig-2. True to form, picturesque Adonis - who at this point had enjoyed the sun on his fair face for many a consecutive year - was put in his casket and laid to rest.

And there he has remained, for Adonis Rensburg has struggled greatly in the last decade and cemented themselves in midtable OranjiLig-2 obscurity. At one point, the fans even hoped for yet another relegation and a quick turnaround from the third tier, because perhaps then they would finally be able to raise glorious Adonis from his slumber.

However, the deep sleep of stunning Adonis was only interrupted last year, when Adonis Rensburg surprisingly managed to crawl their way to promotion and a return to the top of Oranjestadt regional football. We weren’t there to witness it, but we’ve heard it said it was one hell of a party out there in the cove when beauteous Adonis got his head above water for the first time in over a decade.

It must’ve been glorious.

It really is a shame, then, that today’s result sealed bonnie Adonis’ destiny to yet again take the deep plunge. A draw would have sufficed, but it ended with a whooping 5-0 defeat.

We rarely take sides, but it was plain on Hardly-Knut’s otherwise stoic face that he shared the grief and frustration of the travelling Adonis Rensburg fans.

No bad without some good though, because what better way to end the season than travelling down to Rensburg and join in on sightly Adonis’ funeral procession, where his casket is to be carried through town before one of the small fishing boats transport him out to his resting place below the blue expanse. It really is an event you want to witness, because who knows when he’ll return to the surface again?

* OOC: I'm very happy to continue the RL partnership with User:Gnejs in the production of the SteuerLig sportswire, or TAX Magazine Sports Desk as I sometimes call it. As the writer behind both Gnejs and Seeberg, I feel we have one of the best and most under-appreciated RPers on board for the SteuerLig. I hope in the future NSS gets more storied nations from Gnejs, it's a duller place without them - but for now at least, we can enjoy football tourists Karl-Johan, Knut and Hardly-Knut directly from the pen (or keyboard) of their original creator.

SteuerLig-100
Part 4/4: The Sun Always Shines On The Victorious

The green shoots of spring bring an early guarantee of sunshine to the parks and fields of the Isle of Taxhavn, and in these perfect conditions the SteuerLig draws to a close with all to play for. The sharp end of the season is bathed in a welcome glow - unless your team is relegated, in which case it's a whole year to forget.

No feature articles in this final review; we'll get right down to brass tacks and the closing rounds of the season, together with a veritable collection of dramatic finals. Even the war can wait - after a month we all lose interest in the daily briefings. Today's news culture: everyone loves the big shiny guns and roaring jets on day one, nobody wants to see the muddy trenches, bombed out housing and broken down tanks in the snow on day thirty-two. Let's have some football instead.

...

• Yes! Deltic FC!!!

Match of the Round: 31
Septentriennes 4–4 HPV Waallen
If anyone was going to catch The Exiles at the top of the table, your money was most likely on ASMV and of course their fierce rivals Septentriennes. The Bankers threw away a three goal lead at home to HPV Waallen in a cracking game of intensity, strike power and defensive errors, and that leaves them a monumental 9 points behind Deltic, who strolled to relatively untroubled success at home to HPV's neighbours Motor Waallen. Meanwhile upstarts ASMV conceded two late goals to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at FC Städeli, and while they have a more realistic chance of stopping a Deltic title defense with only a four point gap, it still seems pretty insurmountable in real terms. Unless they can get more out of the referees than they already are. Look out for Dandelion Town though - the title might be unrealistic but they keep racking up the scores and edge past Raven Thöni into the third Champions League place in what is turning out to be a fantastic season for the Meadowmen.

Round-30
Deltic FC 4–2 Motor Waallen
Raven Thöni 2–3 Tijhuis Archimedes
FC Städeli 3–2 ASMV St. Bernadine

Fortuna Städeli 2–2 Sturm Havn

Match of the Round: 31
Old Shakerssens 3–4 Septentriennes
The exciting football was at the magnificent arena of the Shakerdome in Havn for the Bankers hard-fought win against Old Shakerssens, with Septentriennes now right in amongst the chasing pack where three points separates six teams all in with a shout for Champions League football next season. But with Deltic and ASMV both grinding out solid wins themselves, you can't see anyone breaching the top two at this point. Deltic are at home to Archimedes next week and could win the title at The Romainring in their final season there before moving to their brand new stadium, Green Valley, next season - probably as double reigning champions. ASMV travel to Motor Waallen knowing they will at least have to match The Exiles to stay in the title race. They may need to pay the ref, the linos and the fourth official along with the RAD panel (remote assisted discipline) to pull this one off.

Match of the Round: 32
Deltic FC 4–1 Tijhuis Archimedes | Motor Waallen 5–1 ASMV St. Bernadine
... and it's all over as Deltic FC smash Champions League contenders Tijhuis Archimedes in swashbuckling style to win their second consecutive Solitary Soccer League title, and their fourth in seven seasons. The Dragons completely capitulate at the Waallenstadion as Motor thump them in humiliating fashion. Meanwhile Septentriennes are in the Champions League places for the first time since the opening weeks of the season with a good win over relegation-threatened Rovers. With the title gone they will be focused on getting the runners-up spot behind rivals Deltic, which suddenly looks a realistic prospect with two more games to play. Two points behind ASMV, they finish with eminently winnable games against Napoleon and Lions Bessendorf - no disrespect, fellas - while The Dragons will have to contend with Tijhuis Archimedes - the Owls are also fighting for a potential place in the top three - and then they close the season with an unwelcome trip to Romainring where they'll have to play the supporting role in Deltic's title celebrations. The Exiles won't want to end on a sour note in their final home match, which means ASMV very well could.

Match of the Round: 33
ASMV St. Bernadine 4–1 Tijhuis Archimedes
The Dragons hold their nerve to thrash Archimedes in the hunt for second place, in what was a bad tempered clash with eight yellow cards and both head coaches and a couple of Archimedes subs sent to the stands for a ruckus on the touchline. Septentriennes kept pace with a narrow win up the road at Bonaparte Lane, confirming Napoleon St. Bernadine will have to play in the revamped relegation play-offs to keep hold of their place in the top flight. The Bankers could still take the runners-up spot but they will need rivals and champions Deltic to do them a favour and beat ASMV. Dandelion Town's entertaining win over Motor Waallen, also at Bonaparte Lane the following afternoon, means they head into the last game of the season as the fourth and final team capable of reaching the Champions League, though it seems a stretch - they'll need to win at Archimedes, while Septentriennes would have to lose at home to Lions Bessendorf. The promoted team have already confirmed their safety following a spectacular point in a 5-5 home draw with the newly-crowned champions Deltic FC.

Match of the Round: 34
Deltic FC 3–2 ASMV St. Bernadine | Septentriennes 4–3 Lions Bessendorf
It's an Exiles-Bankers one-two as Deltic dispatch a battling ASMV at The Romainring to celebrate their title, while Septentriennes just about overcome the impressive Lions after squandering a rather fortunate four goal lead, giving up three second half goals and being made to sweat at the end. The newly-promoted side from Bessendorf went in search of an equaliser and another high-scoring draw after their 5-5 tie against Deltic last week, but just couldn't get over the line. With 'The Usual Two' taking the first two places, ASMV will be relieved to settle for the third and final Champions League spot - Dandelion Town couldn't catch them and in any case went down in Tijhuis to Archimedes, with both teams securing Challenger's Cup qualifications along with a Heavies team revived under Wightling coach Archie Ruggles-Pompey Snr., HPV Waallen leapfrogging the Meadowmen with a narrow win at FC Städeli to finish fourth. A shame for them that under the IFCF rankings Taxhavn have newly lost their precious fourth Champions League slot, slipping to sixth overall in the coëfficients.

Solitary Soccer League Final Standings
Deltic Reign Supreme

Seamus Awton's imperious Exiles improved on last season's unusually timid league title win - the least victories, the most defeats and the least points of any champion in SteuerLig history - to become every bit the champion you would expect of one of the multiverse's top domestic competitions; taking a little while to warm up after their Super Cup opening defeat to Septentriennes, but then easing into position at the top and never looking likely to relinquish the lead. Against the tumultuous background of the Bay of Greedy Pigs, the chaos of your everyday SteuerLig season, the constant scandals and refereeing conspiracies at ASMV St. Bernadine, Deltic FC went efficiently about their business by firmly setting all the noise onto mute. No controversy at the Romainring as the club prepare to move to their brand new arena in the same town, their own Green Valley, and even the shock news that Awton will leave at the end of the season 'to pursue other interests' with assistant Herman Avelson taking over was kept under wraps until the whistle had blown on the season. Avelson inherits a team growing into its own, out of the shadow of the golden World Cup & IAC-winning generation and with plenty of years left in the legs of young stars like Halfdan Fuller-Kite, Herman Kind, Fynn Light-Weston and Hadrien Six - not forgetting of course prolific Tequiloan strike sensation Pompey. With more talent ready to break through - watch out for Tash Attacke, Hersham Taine, John Stoughton and Jimmy Tintor to make their breakthroughs next season - this is a team that can dominate for years without even needing to worry about ASMV's unusual influence in the halls of power or the imminent and some might say unwelcome return (according to rumour) of Lithico St. Bernadine™ and their Lithico™ billions. Overall they have bested Septentriennes this season and throughout their short time in the league, although it has been close and the Bankers have had plenty of their own glories. Finishing second to Deltic though is becoming and uncomfortably familiar feeling - they will want to change that.

It was the famous Challenger's Cup final between those two that dropped off the IFCF coëfficients this season and with it the fourth Champions Legue place, meaning ASMV St. Bernadine will be Taxhavn's third and final representative in next season's biggest and best competition. Suspicions of a favourable playing field for the Wight Administration-supported club will neither go away nor can they be politely ignored - except, it seems, by the Dragons themselves and their friends at FA-Tax. How long the IFCF will ignore accusations of rigging remains to be seen, but so far, they have not shown any concern at inappropriate doping of the league - probably because, at the end of the day, the impeccable integrity of Deltic FC is still winning everything on the Isle of Taxhavn. Perhaps things will change if The Dragons can win the title - and all conspiracies aside, they do have a very good football team. Septentriennes will do well to keep an eye on developments at The Athletic Ground, the traditional playing headquarters of Taxhavn football and coincidentally - or not - the new home of ASMV. Worried that they are becoming the bridesmaid to Deltic FC, they won't want ASMV to leapfrog them as the principal challengers.

HPV Waallen, Dandelion Town and Tijhuis Archimedes take the Challengers Cup places - Archimedes fading after being in the Champions League race until the last couple of games, while fans of the Heavies will welcome HPV back to the right end of the table after a brief exile in relegation struggles last season. Down their with them and surviving with them last season was Dandelion Town, the Meadowmen just pulling off the escape in their first season in the top flight. While HPV have returned to a familiar upper-league placing, this is new territory for the GnejsCo team, and suggests their progressive plan to reach the top is ahead of schedule. Outside of the IFCF places, Orchideeën conclude a really disappointing domestic season by reaching the Associations Trophy final, and qualifying for next seasons FFI Confederations Trophy. Nevertheless it will be an uncomfortable autopsy of their season for Vilitan joint coaches Sami Samiii and Reino Kononen. The football on offer at Plantation Field was not to anyone's liking. Old school giants FC Städeli and Raven Thöni both flirted with the idea of a title chase early in the season, an improvement for both of them on recent seasons but still nowhere near enough for their demanding fans.

In the seven place expanded relegation shake-up there were mighty scares for De Tike FC, The Wight Rovers and in particular Old Shakerssens - one imagines heads are going to roll in the off-season. Tragically everyone's second favourite team (apart, perhaps, from the Football Tourists and dog-walkers Karl-Johan Vaasa (63) and Knut Svensson (65), with, of course, the Gnejsian Rock Terrier, Hardly-Knut) were unexpectedly relegated via the play-offs - Napoleon St. Bernadine, who have been strong since their rise into the First Division, spiralled into dangerous territory and then fell victim to FA-Tax' cunning plan to give big teams Kierhuizen Boys, Standard Lily and Boldsea FC every chance to get back into the top flight. They were beaten by Standard Lily, with the Boys dumping Fortuna into the second tier. Old Shakerssens survived on the last day of the play-offs by condemning Boldsea to a second season in Division Two. Fortuna and Napoleon will go down with Benson Foxes, the sole automatic relegation, who failed to find a level to mount a survival campaign. While Sturm Havn looked dead and buried for long parts of the season, in the end they had more experience than the Foxes, and survived with a late surge of form.

The Confederations Trophy Play-Offs post-season drama is organised to offer the highest four teams who have failed to qualify for IFCF competitions a last chance to compete for the single place in the FFI tournament and Orchideeën at least secured that, as well as the IFCF Associations Trophy final, so they have something to smile about while Deltic and Septentriennes run off with all the other prizes and all the headlines. The play-off final was back at the Athletic Ground in St. Bernadine city, it's traditional home before being relocated to the Lithico™ on Soccer Island. We all know why that's not happening this season. The Nurserymen turned in an impressive performance to defeat Raven Thöni, who will feel their season was considerably more successful than Orchideeën's given they were only just promoted. Competing for IFCF places until the very end, that's not a bad first season back even if they will feel disappointed to come away empty handed in the end.

One thing actually worked for FA-Tax. Determined to give their big relegation clubs every chance of an immediate return, they redesigned the play-off system to maximise the opportunities for Standard Lily, Kierhuizen Boys and franchise failures Boldsea FC to make an immediate return to the top flight where FA-Tax and especially the sponsors think they belong. Increased places, and more games to secure the promotions - it worked for two out of the three, and that included the mighty Standard Lily, who only just snuck into the top seven on the final matchday of the regular season, and went on to defeat McCunnald and a broken-hearted Napoleon St. Bernadine to secure their return to the top flight. It was a season to forget, but a battling 3-3 draw at Bonaparte Lane was a memorable night for the Pollen Counters and their fans as they finally found some steel to get themselves back at the top table. Fortuna are relegated at the expense of Keirhuizen Boys, while Old Shakerssens survive, condemning Boldsea FC to another season in the second tier.

School's Report

That of course is not my bad journalism you are reading there, but a famous quote by the teenage manager of the first ever Buzzelli Bargain Stores Taxhavn branch. Since then the shilling shop has built a solid reputation for cheap domestic goods and terrible spelling on its shop signage - something it now does deliberately as part of its USP. As the sponsor of the new Elite Youth League, it has a controversial association with lazy illiteracy in the younger population, and many puritans are upset about the association with the youth football teams. But any publicity is gud publicity, in the i's of FA-Tax...

The Elite Youth League, set up to support under-18 teams to play more competitive football and to have an opportunity to play in interregional football with the Rising Stars Cup, usually runs over two stages. In the first stage thirty-six teams, expanded from 30 in the previous seasons, compete in three regional divisions, playing a double round-robin format of 22 games; at which point the teams divide to compete nationally in the second stage of the league. In this stage, clubs divide based on standings into four national tiers. All these phase two games are single round robin neutral venue matches, all played out in a month-long exhibition series on Soccer Island - except that isn't happening, what with the war. FA-Tax consequently decided to call the league after the first phase, with the best overall winner from the three regions being declared the national champion.

In the fifth year of the competition that honour goes to Deltic FC, winners of the youth league for the first time in a clean sweep of domestic trophies.

The Nomarque Nothing™ Tax Cup Final
The Athletic Ground, St. Bernadine

Septentriennes 1–2 Deltic FC
Scorers: Elie Corporon 40' | Torus Oakwale 4' Alfie Alderskell 69'

The Exiles became the first team since FC Städeli in the inaugural year of the Tax Cup to win the league and cup double, defeating great rivals Septentriennes with a hard-fought win to secure a second Cup win overall. This was the book-end season closer, having lost to The Bankers in the opening game of the season - the Tachyon Super Cup at Sept-Nat Stadion. Central defender Torus Oakwale, the subject of transfer rumours following an unremarkable personal season in an overwhelmingly remarkable club season, chose this game either as his shop window or to convince his club he's worth retaining by turning in a player of the match performance, including a rare goal for his team. His opener less than five minutes into the game, assisted by fellow defender Pokey Fayle who crossed into the box from an early short corner, obviously gave him a boost in confidence and he went on to command the game. Imperious at the back against the great attacking talents of Septentriennes and frequently stepping up into a fluid two-man defensive midfield with club captain Burus Tasher when his team had offensive possession, he covered every bit of the back half ground and looked dangerous in the box for corners and free-kicks. While the Delts dominated possession, pass completions, corners and forward play, it was nevertheless a close and competitive match-up, Septentriennes looking dangerous on the break and patient off the ball. Eventually Elie Corporon combining with Luis Glücki managed to find a way past Oakwale and Fayle shortly before half time to fizz in an equaliser under Theodor Snöstorm, and the break came with the teams evenly matched and the tie finely balanced.

A scrappy second half threatened to slide into mediocrity with both teams finding it difficult to break down the pressing play of the opposing defenses, Oakwale especially looking just about unbeatable, until a fine solo goal from Alfie Alderskell put the Exiles back in front and opened up the game. Chances came and went at both ends as Septentriennes piled forward, finishing the match with five forwards on the pitch including talisman Georg Bardo and academy player Elton MacMulfra, 20, making only his second appearance from the bench after a first team debut earlier in the season. The Bankers could not find a way through, however, and while they looked thin at the back after such tactical shifts, their fantastic Golden Glove-winner Garçia de Soto was assured and commanding, preventing Deltic from extending their lead on the counter. In the end it was the league champions who were hanging on, and that man Torus Oakwale had a busy time keeping the forwards at bay - coach Seamus Awton said in his post-match interview that he'd wanted to bring him off at the end to get a standing ovation which he surely deserved, but simply could not afford to replace him in those last critical moments. Finally captain Burus Tasher lifted the Tax Cup at the Athletic Ground for the Delts second cup triumph, but post-match celebrations will have to be muted - a Champions League final awaits with an historic treble on offer.

The 26th League of Victors Final
Aditya Varma Kulashekara International Stadium, New Hind City, Indusse

Septentriennes 3–1 Eolorent
Scorers: Daniel Dight 21' Ezra de Nage 36' Philip Løvseth (OG) 51' | Batyr Krayersky 38'

The Bankers swept to a stylish second successive League of Victors title with an impressive win over Auprussian powerhouse Eolorent, Ken Kallestad proving to be the midfield engine that made everything tick for Septentriennes in New Hind City. The defender-come-midfielder, employed in this game by head coach Anaïs Aescher in the more advanced number six role, covered every blade of grass as the energetic Taxhavnites put their Tax Cup defeat behind them to win yet more glory and a joint record 24th title overall, making them equal with Orchideeën as the most successful club of all time on the Isle of Taxhavn. With 54% of the possession and just in front in terms of pass completion, chances created and overall touches in the opposition box, the Bankers worked hard for a deserved win, with Daniel Dight opening the scoring midway through the first half, latching on to an Onun Tasher headed flick and wrong-footing Vanoran keeper Philip Løvseth with a quick half-volley on the run. Fifteen minutes later Ezra de Nage made a goal out of nothing in a crowded penalty box after a corner, and Septentriennes threatened to pull out of sight. Manager Ricard De Ferchoude had his Earth Dragons quickly back in the game though, driving them forward from the touchline with Batyr Krayersky ending a move that started from the kick-off and cut the lead back to a single goal.

Septentriennes went straight on the offensive for the second half and soon restored their two-goal advantage, keeper Løvseth unfortunate to backheel the ball into his own net from a de Nage shot which came back off the post - really nothing he could do about that. He was tested twice further, both by substitute forward Georg Bardo, as Septentriennes refused to sit back on their lead. Eolorent carved out a couple of good opportunities themselves, Chromatik centreback Samantha Han Cunningham going close with a header from a corner, and star signing Odin Berg testing Garçia de Soto who's hands must've been stinging after turning a cannonball volley over the bar with minutes left in the game. Ultimately the Bankers prevailed, while Eolorent will wonder if they left everything they had out there on the field or let the occasion get to them a bit. Either way, it's another FFI trophy for a Taxhavnite team as they continue to enjoy great success in their competitions.

Player of the match: Ken Kallestad (Septentriennes)

The 17th Associations Trophy Final
Stadia Szbedank, Szbedank, Kanzlia

Orchideeën 0–2 Heavenly Princess
Scorers: Buck Trumin 90+1' Towson Turner 90+6'

Kelvin Bisgaard-Hagen was sent off as the Nurserymen suffered heartbreaking defeat in the Associations Trophy final, going down to two added time goals after being forced to play the entire second half with ten men against Heavenly Princess, of Bohr. The young Polarian star had clearly lost his head in his first major final when he dived into a reckless tackle on Towson Turner and then jumped up swearing with rage - it wasn't clear immediately whether he'd been sent off for the tackle or for the unsportsmanlike conduct until the referee clarified post-match: it was the tackle. And rightly so - it could've been a serious ankle breaker but somehow Turner was up and running again after a couple of minutes treatment and played the full game, putting in a player of the match performance and scoring the decisive second goal with the last kick of the game. Vilitan coaches Sami Samiii and Reino Kononen reorganised the defense at the half-time break and the hobbled Nurserymen did in the second half what they'd done in the first half with eleven - contained the Princesses with solid defending, urgent pressing and a touch of steel (a little too much, on that one occasion) while not offering an awful lot going forward. That lack of ambition will be seen as the thing that cost them this game, as a combination of weariness and perhaps complacency led them to drop their guard when they needed it most - as the clock ticked over the ninety minutes mark and a goal then would likely decide the game. It was substitute attacking midfielder Buck Trumin who got the killer first - a fine solo run skipping past tired defenders and creating his own space and time in which to slot with precision past flailing keeper Geo van Ghent.

Urged to throw everything at the Princesses and using up their final sub opportunity to bring on forwards Pat Knevynton and Luuk Moleman, the Nurserymen were caught on the break twice, Frank LeRobert squandering a golden opportunity to finish Orchideeën off when he shot lamely straight at van Ghent when clean through on goal, before Towson Turner delivered the knockout punch. Played through by midfielder James Herbert he coolly slotted home to finish the game, the ref deciding he didn't need to see any more with six minutes of added time already played.

The 27th Champions League Final
San Daros, Paulinthal, Pasarga

Deltic FC 2–3 FTC United
Scorers: Burus Tasher 79' Pompey 84' | Beppo Hegesa 33' Dnu Taravingian 45' Gabriel Istibar 74'

The Exiles were well beaten in the biggest game of the club's history (apart from, you know, that World Cup final) and end a glorious season in bitter disappointment, with a feeling this is one they let slip. Was the season just too long, in the end, what with the emotions of winning both the domestic league and cup with a fairly young side? Or is that just me looking for excuses? Ultimately the Delts came up against a side expected to sit back and counter-attack, but they took the game to Deltic and there was a poetic edge to their performance, or a series of limericks at least. Two goals to the good at half time, through midfielder Beppo Hegesa's volley on the half-hour and a dispiriting flick past Theodor Snöstorm from striker Dnu Taravingian just as the referee was about to call time on the half, FTC went into the break sensing glory, while the Delts were surely shell-shocked from a first-half trouncing by the Rice Eaters. Things only got worse in the second half, a reorganised Deltic being forced into a defensive shape to prevent further leaks, but compromising their ability to fight their way back - clearly the plan was to wait it out until the last ten minutes, then bring on the forward subs and hope to overpower FTC with renewed energy and the rising prowess of young forwards Hadrien Six, Merlo Toruska and Harald Knoyll. The only fly in the chicken soup being player of the match and FTC captain Gabriel Istibar's strike in the 74th minute making the margin for comeback too great for the Delts to cover. Not that they didn't make a go of it - the subs came on, none of them got much by way of touches but their zesty energy and running created plenty of spaces for more experienced players to exploit. Captain Burus Tasher and star Tequiloan striker Pompey pulled the Delts back into the game with poachers goals, to leave the Zwangzuggies sweating on that narrow lead. But they saw the game out with determined aplomb, which goes surprisingly well with chicken and rice if you roast it for 3-5 minutes with a sprig of sage and a little ginger syrup.

Player of the match: Gabriel Istibar (FTC United)

The Bay of Greedy Pigs
Never Surrender

Taxhavn surrender - Lithico St. Bernadine™ to be reinstated

SOCCER ISLAND - the war is over, long live the war. A glorious failure on the part of the Taxhavn military forces, the Taxhavn football association, and especially the Taxhavn central banks firewall arrangements finally led to talks with the army of lawyers from Lithico™ and a settlement which is officially framed as a truce. After hackers from the Lithico™ Digital Warfare Unit shut down the banking industry for a few hours one Thursday afternoon - bankrupting one of the key central banks in the process - there was no hope of the Taxhavn authorities continuing to support FA-Tax' stance to keep Lithico St. Bernadine™ out of the Solitary Soccer League. Duke Aim, the League Commissioner, resigned citing operational differences with Prime Minister Hugo Cobleigh, and was last reported having left the Isle of Taxhavn to join the Wightling Expeditionary Squad who are in the midst of establishing a new base in Anaia. Anonymous blazers at FA-Tax were rounded up and sent into a meeting with the government and representatives of the army of lawyers still occupying Soccer Island, and there they thrashed out a deal. The tenancy of Soccer Island and in particular SoccerLand theme park, awarded to the Lithico™ micro-state in order to grease the wheels of World Cup hosting with Farfadillis and Paradystopia, would be nullified and the army of lawyers would hand back possession of Soccer Island. In exchange, financial reparations would be significant, and Lithico™ - the microstate - would be founder and equal-majority equity shareholders of the new St. Bernadine Bay Fluid Time Exploration Company, (list:Flutex) set to start drilling in the bay for unnatural resources. All parties deny the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict was about the vast potential wealth from fluid time reserves, of course.

What they officially claim it was all about was football, and in particular Lithico St. Bernadine™, who were punitively relegated four divisions the previous season and refused to participate in the league this season gone. What of them? Negotiators from the army of lawyers fought hard to maximise benefits from their victory in the Bay of Greedy Pigs and the football club undoubtedly come out as the winners in all this - firstly by immediately being reinstated to the top flight of Taxhavn football; a refund of the billion-shilling relegation veto payment made to FA-Tax by Lithico immediately before FA-Tax vetoed the veto; a guarantee that Lithico will get a hard pass on relegation next season even if they finish in the relegation zone on sporting terms; and, remarkably, another full refund - of the eight points they were docked the season before last which started the whole row. That means they will start the season automatically 8 points ahead of every other team in the division. Howls of protest were expected but in fact clubs have mostly been circumspect about complaining, probably for fear of starting another war. One unnamed official at Orchideeën also claimed no-one is worried about a warp in the sporting merit of the league - 'that lot couldn't win a raffle with a book full of tickets; eight points won't be enough if you're trying to buy the league for them.'

I say Lithico St. Bernadine™ come out as winners in all this and it definitely is a great deal for the Triple-A. But where are they going to play next season? The transformation of The Lithico™ World Cup 100 Final Stadium, their home ground, has been nothing short of apocalyptic.

Soccer Island is an absolute ruin, and Lithico will be looking for favours in the ground-sharing market. I'm surprised they didn't get something written down in the truce agreement that would compel someone to open their doors to surely the most hated team in all Taxhavn football history, apart from Axis Driessche. Axis are notably in favour of their cause - because Axis - but as they already groundshare with BSSC, there is no chance of them helping out. The Athletic Ground in St. Bernadine was of course owned by the predecessor club to Lithico, but licence was transferred to their most vicious rivals ASMV, so they won't be going back there, either. Given there is probably no-one left on the Isle of Taxhavn that supports them, they could play on Oswyn Village Green and not have to worry about crowd management.

SteuerLig-101
End of Season Awards

The Soccerati of Taxhavn usually gather at the Grand Bullion Hotel to celebrate another successful season of chaos, bribes, tax breaks, legal arguments and complicated restructures of the SteuerLig; but 'with the war and all that' FA-Tax cancelled the event, issuing only a list of end-of-season awards and sending on the gongs to the relevent players and managers via the Taxhavn General Post Office.

Tequiloan 'superstriker' Pompey becomes only the second player, after Jeroen Blenkers, to win both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot and the first player from Tequilo to win either award. In fact this was the Year of The Tequiloans - no award had ever gone to players of that nation before, but along with Pompey's two gongs, Garçia de Soto won the Golden Glove and Riko Zuazua the Golden Brick, for best defender, giving the Tequis four awards overall. Pasargan Orkény Gál traded his 'best defender' award last season for a Golden Visa as the league's best foreigner - following fellow countryman Tétény Csorba's win last season. Where are all the locals? Worryingly only one award went to Taxhavnite in the season where the national team development centre was closed down due to the war. Young midfield starlet Herman Kind joins a rare breed of player to win any single award more than once as he took the Golden Pram for young player of the year for a second consecutive season. Only Blaz Kovacic (MYT) and Tristan Featherstone (TKT) have managed it before in that category.

Astonishingly FA-Tax awarded themselves the Wooden Spoon, largely thought to have been part of the terms of settlement for Lithico™'s victory in the Bay of Greedy Pigs War.

The Last Word
Times, They Are A'Changing

What to expect next season

With Lithico St. Bernadine™ restored to the top flight under the Bay of Greedy Pigs Agreement and FA-Tax having failed to budget for it in their promotion-relegation series, the Solitary Soccer League will become an asymmetrical 19-team division and the whole SteuerLig a prime 73-team league. Promotion and relegation planning for next season will be announced at the commencement of season 102, but it is expected that FA-Tax will complete their long-discussed and widely hated closure of promotion-relegation for the top division. The Solitary Soccer League sponsored by Crabapple Inc. and very much under pressure from them will become a standalone league, closed and separate from the SteuerLig, for the commencement of domestic season 103. Off-the-record chatter from inside FA-Tax is that they are quite excited by prime numbers and asymmetry, and that in the final shakeup the Solitary Soccer League could remain at 19 teams or expand to the next prime number, 23. With the Football Union - a rival to IFCF but exclusively within the Wightling Commonwealth - attempting to lure FA-Tax to sign up by playing on the SteuerLig's loss of a fourth Champions League spot and offering them five places in their 'Titans League', the organisation might favour the larger 23-team format.

Talking of the Football Union... technically the slogan ought to read IFCF 2 FU as the Union ramps up pressure on FA-Tax to transition in that direction, leaving the IFCF/FFI competitions behind in favour of the Titans League, Titanic Challenge Cup, Awakening Titans Youth Championship and so on. But in an aggressive marketing campaign the FU is going all FU 2 IFCF, whatever that is supposed to suggest, with all sorts of bribery, blackmail, disproportionate cajoling and persistent phone calls including and not limited to a cash deal in the region of eight times the huge sum clubs already make via IFCF television and prize money. The Football Union has voted in a new President to oversee this shady business and anyone who has followed the money in the NSWC over recent years will be no stranger to that man Herr Blattini, the smooth operator, cunning linguist, habitual confabulist and confidence trickster from Qazox or The Free Republics or somewhere. He seems ideally suited to guiding the chaotic and some say corrupt FA-Tax into ever more chaos and corruption by selling what's left of its soul to the Union. And not only Herr Blattini - his fellow countryman from Qazox or Free Republics or Vilita or wherever, Baldi Reptilino, has been appointed General Secretary by his old pal Blattini. Anyone writing a phd on psycopaths who smile too much with dead eyes will recognise one of their subject group immediately - in Wight they call him 'Nosferatu'. What does it mean for the Solitary Soccer League, and - get in line, you - the SteuerLig? More money, more questions, less soul, no integrity. Because Taxhavn.

A Beginner's Guide To The SteuerLig
Five things you need to know about Taxhavnite football

A quick introduction for new readers

Taxhavn's got history - though just over a decade of IFCF entries behind it, Taxhavn has a long history of domestic soccer and is entering it's 99th formally organised season.

There's a Big Six, of sorts - Standard Lily have won the most SteuerLigs, followed by Raven Thöni and FC Städeli; while Orchideeën and Septentriennes are the most decorated clubs in history; Tijhuis Archimedes play in the biggest ground to the biggest crowds.

There are three distinct regions of the island - the industrial north (clubs like Orchideeën, Archimedes and Kierhuizen Boys), the suburban west (Raven, Deltic FC, HPV Waallen) and the super-rich south (Septentriennes, Standard, FC Städeli)

There is a superclub - only five years old, Taxhavn City was formed from the merger of three old giants in St. Bernadine - Athletic, Amateur & Accountants. So - superclub. In their first season they were terrible; in the second they won the cup. In the third they qualified for the Champions League. In the fourth they were banned from calling themselves Taxhavn City. They couldn't think up a new name in time for the fifth season and were known as St. Bernadine Football Team. But now Lithico™ have taken over and the probably might be mighty at last.

There's more info at the front - just skip back to the OP to find a menu of interesting articles and posts that, once you've read them, will make you the world's foremost expert (apart from me) on Taxhavnite football.

A Beginner's OOC Guide To The SteuerLig
Five other things you need to know about Taxhavnite football

A quick introduction for new readers

Taxhavn is a tax haven - I mean, like, as if I had to tell you that. Think Switzerland, Panama, Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong.

Taxhavn is like Switzerland-and-Hong Kong - take the culture of Switzerland and the geography and population of Hong Kong and that is something like Taxhavn, a huge sprawling city-state, an overcrowded island of banking, manufacture, rampant capitalism and financial loopholes.

Taxhavn is like Switzerland with a bit of Old England - the north of the island is Dutch-influenced (Oranji, ICly), the west is German-influenced (Nibelungen) and the south is Anglo-French (Franglaise). The east is a big mountain called Mount Shilling. Taxhavnites speak Oranji, Nibelungen, Franglaise and a bit of Flemish (Beljique) and Italian (Rosicruxxian) too. They are very rich and very clever. And very rich.

Taxhavn is like Monaco - it's full of million-, billion-, and yes, even trillionaires. And now, in this time of unchecked rapacity, some quadrillionaires - more than the rest of the multiverse combined, in fact. Allegedly.

The SteuerLig is like the Saudi League - and before that, the Chinese Superleague, and before that, the Russian Oligarch League, the Columbian Gold League and the North American Soccer League. That is to say, not very good but so much money it's insane. Mostly only old-timers and young kids went there to make a quick raise. But nowadays things are changing. It's actually getting half decent. One team even won the IFCF Supercup. Hard to explain.

Season 102 Obituary

In Memorium
Enda Clentin

Obituary by Sixteen Bits AI v.26.9.23reg, Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths Edition

ST. BERNADINE CITY - Deltic coach Enda Clentin, inventor of the World Cup '95-winning Stoicpress tactic, successful head coach of Delte and Gnejs, taking both of those national teams to their first ever World Cup finals tournaments, victim of the Deltic Uncivil War who nearly died several times of drowning, head injuries and bullet wounds - mostly inflicted by his ex-missus Brenda - has been confirmed murdered after arriving back in Taxhavn from the Lithico™ microstate in a series of freezer bags. Snatched in a night raid by the Lithico Boys Brigade™ he was purportedly held to ransom at the height of the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict on Soccer Island - but Taxhavn military insiders had good evidence to suggest he had not survived the kidnap attempt.

The legendary coach was no stranger to conflict and life-threatening injury. After washing up half-drowned on the shores of Taxhavn during the Uncivil War in the Valley of the River Delte, mute and half-blind from hammer wounds to his skull, he survived a second assassination attempt by stepson Emlyn Blymmins' rogue mum Brenda. He had to learn how to walk, how to talk and how to walk and talk again, how to judge distance with only one eye, how not to be afraid of floodlight towers (after being shot by a sniper in the lights) and how to hang a pair of glasses on his ears when one of them was shredded by Brenda's bullets.

A man often caught up in social causes despite a distinct lack of interest in social causes, the former PE teacher at Oswark Grammar School was talked out of retirement by Gnejsian superstar striker Georg Bardo to lead on the new SteuerLig refugee football project - the Aubinsville Pro Kickers. He was unfortunate enough to be in the occupation zone when the Lithico™ chopper invasion of Soccer Island began. Though having an opportunity in the first days of the conflict to get out, he opted to remain behind to teach his first passion, PE, to the children of the Aubinsville Tent City before they were conscripted into the Lithico Boys Brigade™. After that he went into hiding behind enemy lines, and literally never made it out in one piece.

I ask you all to take this moment to wish Enda some well deserved rest in peace, in the pungent afterlife of Wight.

[applause] one minute [/applause]

Amen.

The man identified as co-conspirator in the death of dear old Enda is one-armed goalkeeper and former Farf cult hero for all the wrong reasons, Custodio Reverso, 36. Recently released from Lithico St. Bernadine™ and having just signed for AZ-Tjaart 54 (with his wrong hand - it was more of an X) after his year of military conscription in the Soccer Island offensive, Reverso was arrested at the Tjaart community centre training ground last week. He was detained on charges of war crimes contrary to the Jennifer Convention in relation to his role as Training Officer of the Lithico™ Boys Brigade, Aubinsville Division, which carried out various machete-based operations during which Enda was captured and killed. Reverso and the Boys Brigade were previously responsible for the infamous defeat of the Special Tax Service on Soccer Beach when the elite forces unit attempted to end the Bay of Greedy Pigs Conflict by taking back Soccer Island. The humiliation of the STS was a key turn in the conflict in the favour of the belligerent microstate, Lithico™, although in the cover of darkness when dismembering the STS combatants, a beserker unit of the Boys Brigade mis-identified their own leader, Corporal Reverso, and had chopped off one of his arms before he was successfully able to identify himself. (It did not stop him winning a new playing contract with the 54's after the war, with AZ's manager declaring he might be a better goalkeeper now the decision on which hand to use in shot-stopping had been, um, amputated).

Before the end of the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict, Reverso and his boys had been tasked with a raid on the Aubinsville Tent City where Enda was known to be in hiding, helping with charitable efforts to keep the refugees of Tent City out of the war. Lithico™ commanding officer Major Zöglör had declared the Deltic coach a vital asset, to be ransomed to the enemy in exchange for favours at the negotiating table, but it seems Corporal Reverso fumbled his orders as usual and 'The Clench' was brought before the Major in a bodybag, with several additional bags for stray parts. It was quite a mess, by all accounts. Reverso was demoted to 'Paralegal Assistant's Assistant' and court-martialed at the end of the war. His single post-war training session with his new club AZ was described as 'er, promising, maybe?' by his coach before being disrupted by his arrest for war crimes. He was convicted in a civilian kangaroo court later that afternoon.

Famous for his nomadic footballing lifestyle - he has already signed for (if not played for) eight different clubs in six years in Taxhavn - Reverso will at least see a settled period in his club journey, possibly turning out for the Strong Island Arrows prison team for the next 999 seasons, or however many he lives to see in rather ill-reputed conditions. The Arrows finish bottom of the Southern League every season on account of only being able to fulfil home fixtures, which seems a fitting end to Reverso's well-travelled but unequivocally inept goalkeeping career.

Meanwhile Reverso's co-conspirators Major Zöglör - chief 'lawyer' in the Bay of Greedy Pigs invasion - and Brenda Blymmins, a wanted criminal with connections to the Uncivil War in Delte and multiple previous attempts on Enda's life, have both been illegally repatriated to Farfadillis, with whom there is no extradition agreement. They remain at large but listed with Multipol as 'persons of interest' to the Taxhavn Military Police Office and the Wightling Commonwealth.

Did Somebody Say 'Takeaway'?
Ten Things We Learned In The Off-Season

Report by Sixteen Bits AI v.26.9.23se, Sports Editor Edition

The season is nearly here! But what happened in the critical time between seasons, when football executives and administrators get dangerously bored and come up with new ideas to 'make football more interesting'?

The Cyclical Shenanigans Begin Here
FA-Tax announce the annual restructuring controversies

If it's not a relegation reshuffle it's the bi-annual punishment penalties for recidivist rule-breakers. The cyclical shenanigans of FA-Tax's tinkering with league outcomes continues under new League Commissioner Baldi Reptilino and his dear chum, the new head of the FA, Herr Blattini. Promising to be more transparent than previous administrators, and more democratic, and to make tons more money than ever before (despite a financial crash on the island - see below), Blattini and Reptilino start by honouring the terms of the peace deal following the brief conflict between the Farf microstate Lithico™ and Taxhavn in the Bay of Greedy Pigs - Lithico St. Bernadine™ are reinstated to the Solitary Soccer League, and are refunded the eight points deducted from season 100 which means they start the season top of the table with +8 points before a ball has been kicked. IFCF won't be very happy about that, but who cares? (See below). Meanwhile, the hasty restructure means there was no time to select a viable candidate for relegation in their place (read - FA-Tax lawyers, still reeling from the Greedy Pigs thrashing, were not confident to defend the association from the inevitable law suits from late relegated teams) have gone with an asymmetric 19-team division. They have also announced the inevitable and long-predicted end to relegation from the SSL; although there will be one more season of promotions. Four teams will come up from the second tier, to make the Solitary Soccer League a closed league of 23 teams from next season. As part of the Wightling Commonwealth Office's decree for expanded 'Wightlingisation' of Taxhavn proper nouns, the SteuerLig is no more - SteuerLig tiers 2 to 4 will become the new Tax League divisions 1-3; they will retain their sponsorship naming rights with new divisional signatures as the Soapy Luchre Championship, the Molineux Goats Cheese Division One, and the Trumpanzee Garbage Corporation Big Orange Division from next season; they will also be reorganised with the asymmetrical principle in mind - the Championship will feature 17 teams (reduced by 1); Division One will feature 19 teams (increased by 1) and the Big Orange Division will feature a whopping 31 teams in a single round robin, increased by 13 clubs drawn from a big non-league play-off competition at the end of this coming season. Got all that?

Hobblers
ASMV and Dandelion Town hit with points deductions

Not content with a big old shake up of the divisional arrangements, and Lithico St. Bernadine™'s remarkable +8 point refund which gives them a major starting advantage, FA-Tax will of course pursue the annual round of points deductions and it is the club that arguably contributed most - along with Lithico - to the beginning of the Bay of Greedy Pigs that will take the biggest hit: ASMV St. Bernadine. Once again caught with their hand in the cookie jar of illegal tapping up, The Dragons are subject to a suspended sentence from last season. While Lithico had an 8 point deduction that kicked off the war, ASMV had two points and the suspension for similar offences, and it was that apparent differeniation of approach that so enraged the Lithico owners. This season, three teams complained about ASMV behaviour in the signing of defender Sonny Guyton from Raven Thöni and young prospects Yves Bullion and Michael Challis from lower league clubs. Having been found guilty of two of the three breaches, ASMV will be deducted six points, with an additional six for the suspension; meaning the title contenders will start on a championship-ending -12 points, and a remarkable 20 points behind deadly rivals Lithico. Some say that the savage deduction is in part a condition of the official general armistice agreement at the end of the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict, though FA-Tax have issued a strong denial. As if to show his irrefutable impartiality on such matters, league chief Baldi Reptilino has also picked on the most harmless, least reviled and perhaps fondest second club in the division, Dandelion Town, docking them three points for not having enough Taxhavnites in the registered squad. This follows an admin error in which the requisite fifth Taxhavnite, back-up defender Mathijs Maertens, was listed as number 26 on the team, when the league requirement is five in the first twenty-five. 'It is unfortunate,' said Baldi, when questioned by the media as he arrived for a VIP party being held at the Lithico™ consulate in St. Bernadine City, 'but we are committed to fairness, transparency and democracy in Taxhavnite football, so chill out guys...'

No-one would think of wondering if Dandelion have also been targeted as their being part of the GnejsCo MCO which also features Aubinsville Pro Kickers, the other team on Soccer Island before the war. Nonono, certainly not. Even though it was the Pro Kickers who took Lithico's vacated place in Division Four and around whom the whole community has rallied to find a new home with the island flattened by shelling, and with their head coach Enda Clentin passed over to the afterlife in Wight.

Identity Crisis
Rogelio Carréon gets a Taxhavn passport, huzzah!

Every season, and sometimes twice in a single season, striker Rogelio Carréon has to visit the Foreign Office in St. Bernadine Square to get a new passport. Coming to Taxhavn as a 16-year-old Panay & Islas Guimaras prospect to sign for the famed youth project at St. Bernadine Academical, the poor lad has seen his country change it's name so many times that he has his own door at the passport section and the officials there have adopted him as their own - now at Kierhuizen Boys, he always brings new season tickets for the department and many of the officials follow his career with fondness. As well as a Panayan and a Guimarayan, he's been a Visayan, a Mindanaoan, a Pilippino, a Utópico, and several others besides. I've also lost track. But imagine Rogelio's surprise - he's 27 now and has 13 old passports in his shoebox at home - when he was summoned to the Foreign Office again, to pick up his latest identity papers from the passport section only to find he's been issued with the gold-leaf covered Official Passport of Taxhavn in The Wightling Commonwealth. Apparently cutbacks in the department identified a considerable saving if they just let him stay with his own domestic paperwork. There was a small party in the office for the player who was offered to St. Bernadine Academical as 'the future star of the Panay team' only to be forgotten and never selected for any age group national team of all the many nations of which he was briefly a citizen. Finding it hard to be a patriot of such a nebulous concept as 'ex-Panayism', Rogelio went on record to state he has always felt like a Taxhavnite, even though he never had the passport or the Tachyon 611 supercar most footballers are awarded on signing their club contracts. When he stepped out of the Foreign Office several hours and three pints of champagne later, he was handed the keys to his first Tachyon courtesy of his club - a special edition 611 Gold-Leaf Multiversa GT. Wow! Three minutes later he was arrested for drunk driving and bailed pending charges. Fortunately he has no fear of being deported, thanks to his honorary gold-leaf passport. As for the Multiversa GT - well that was confiscated. Rogelio is very used to the temporary and fluctuating nature of his existence, so I'm sure he has nothing but fond memories of his three minutes driving the machine down Government Boulevard trying to get it into second gear.

Pay Up Pompey
Lithico break domestic transfer record with mega-spending power

The Triple-A, not sitting back on an eight point lead at the top of the table before the season has even begun, have shown their intent to punish the whole division for shutting them out last season (and setting light to The Lithico™ World Cup 100 Stadium in SoccerLand in the process) by breaking all known records in the transfer window - the most ever spent by one team (₸x166m shillings eclipsing Kierhuizen Boys in their pomp), the most on a single transfer, re-signing Tequiloan super-striker Pompey from Deltic FC (₸x68m eclipsing the previous record held by Kierhuizen Boys), the most on a semi-pro player from the regional leagues with Johnny Cadet coming from Freilein-Winloopen works team (₸x9.5m eclipsing the previous record held by, er, Kierhuizen Boys) and the most for a second tier player with Mustardo talent Clovis Clemenceau from Academical (₸x33.5m eclipsing, well, Kierhuizen Boys, of course). A vast bank of funding fully insured against the incoming financial crash in Taxhavn by the protection of their paymasters Lithico™ - the microstate who most agree won the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict - and a determination to wipe the smile off just about everyone's faces from the times way back when Athletic, Amateur and Accountants all merged to form the superteam-come-laughing stock Taxhavn City. A decade on, the team look like they might actually win something with the general feeling no-one has much of an appetite to stand in their way. Especially since the other state-sponsored club in the league, ASMV, have been kicked in the teeth with their massive relegation-threatening points deduction. It seems only Taxhavn's perennial big two of Deltic FC and Septentriennes might offer up some competition (and maybe Orchideeën, perhaps-possibly) but the aforementioned financial crisis engulfing Banks of Taxhavn after the Lithico™ hacking during the war will surely put the brakes on Septentriennes' hopes of remaining competitive, being wholly owned by Banque Sept-Nat as they are. That means Lithico St. Bernadine will target Deltic FC as their chief rival this season, and what better way to destabilise them than to buy the best striker in the league off them, price no object? It could be Payback with Pompey.

Banque Sept-Nat Statement
Septentriennes defy island-wide banking crash

Nobody is saying exactly what has happened within the banking system since the Bay of Greedy Pigs, when a Lithico™ digital warfare unit mounted a big hacking operation on the financial markets of St. Bernadine City; rumours range from the microstate having drained the whole crypto-vault of every last virtual dime, to the banks themselves taking an opportunity to 'restructure' internally and shift a whole bunch of ill-gotten booty through a bunch of back doors before they slam shut, once the Banks of Taxhavn Central Office has restored the broken firewalls from the Lithico™ strike. Whatever it is, the economy is rocking and there are reports that last week not a single trillionaire announced their passing over the threshhold into the Quadrillionaire's Club. Not one. This reverses an eight-month trend since the announcement of the first quadrillionaire - Deltic banker Tatiana (Taite) de Luntte. Something's not right... but that doesn't seem to be worrying Septentriennes, who disagree with the assessment they won't be able to compete with Lithico St. Bernadine™ and Deltic FC in the hunt for the next Solitary Soccer League title. After all they did sign midfield maestro Conor Lightman from Boldsea FC for a ridiculous ₸x46m shillings - immediately eclipsing Lithico's record payment for a second tier player after they'd eclipsed Kierhuizen Boys previous record. But the really big news of course is that the head coach who bought [sic] all that success over the last decade to the Sept-Nat Stadion, Anaïs Aescher, has stepped down for a break (thus beginning the rumour that Septentriennes were sitting on an empty piggy bank, and she knew it). The league's most successful female coach, Anaïs will be replaced by the league's most exciting up-and-coming female coach Emma Town from cross-city firm Napoleon St. Bernadine. And the club appear to have given her a blank chequebook to keep up with their free-spending rivals, even if there is no cash - allegedly - to back up the cheques. What crash?

Banque Ghentian-Llhuillier Statement
St. Gight's Albion going under

Septentriennes might be in denial about the current fiduciary situation in Taxhavn right now but in the case of St. Gight's Albion, there is no denying or getting round the collapse of Banque Ghentian-Llhuillier, the club backers. The bank went under about three hours after Lithico™'s digital warfare unit arrived on Soccer Island and plugged into the TAX.net with their insider codes to start breaking down the banking firewalls. Ghentian-Llhuillier was the first to go, drained of every centime before the head of the bank, a direct descendent of founder Charlemagne Llhuillier, could pick up his poolside phone to hear his security lead screaming down the line like a big girl. For sure it was an insider job, and whoever got Lithico™ into TAX.net was a Banque Ghentian-Llhuillier employee. The hunt continues to track them down via digital forensics picking over the ruins of their 'impregnable' security web. Meanwhile the club they own has not quite given up the ghost yet, although they have had to sell every player worth more than fifty shillings, promote their youth academy on temporary contracts, and go into administration hoping to find a buyer who can save their long term future. If relegation from the second division did not already look certain with the playing staff at their disposal, FA-Tax has made sure by contributing a -9 point deduction as an automatic endorsement for going into administration. Their feeder team and the bank's other football possession, CF Ghentian-Llhuillier, of the Works League, have bypassed administration altogether and are in the process of complete liquidation. A four-hundred-odd year-old bank (apparently with a four-hundred-odd year-old intranet) has gone to the wall, and in the Albion one of Taxhavn's old guard of the historic Southern League could well follow thanks to Lithico™ and their army of heavily armed lawyers, accountants and in particular 'IT technicians'. The dirty hackers.

A Run On The Banques
Foreign stars continue withdrawing funds

The exodus of foreign nationals continues apace as the league sheds it's insane-money reputation in preference to the crumbling edifice of patriotic national interest - grow local, improve the national team prospects, they say. Though whether there will be a national team for much longer is open to question - see below. But in any case, it's not that Taxhavn is deporting all the foreigners (only Pasargans). It's that the money is supposedly about to run dry, and FA-Tax is about to defect from the IFCF to the FU - see below below that. If they aren't earning buckets of cash or playing in the Champions League, what's the point of being in Taxhavn? Unless you like big steel and glass archictecture, it certainly isn't for the views. Yes, you can still launder you dirty cash on every street corner but for how much longer can the Taxhavn Laundromat stay operational with the banks about to collapse - or in the case of Banque Ghentian-Llhuillier, already gone. If the dirty money stays dirty, you don't want to be caught with it in your pocket. Footballers in particular have been very keen to take the dirty shilling and get it scrubbed tax-free - they're always keen for that, or their agents are anyway - but some of that shilling is going to stick if they're not careful. In the last two seasons nearly one hundred foreigners have upped and left, and the fifty or so top flight foreign nationals remaining are mostly expected to go at the end of this season. Of course, the refugee diasporas - your Gnejsians, your Polarians, your Vilitans, and Rogelio - will probably opt to stay on because for them the dirty money is as good as the clean. No-one from the Atlantean Ocean Financial Conduct Authority is going to be beating a path to the door of Orchideeën's joint Vilitan coaches Sami Samiii & Reino Kononen any time soon, are they? But Tikarios, Auprussians, Indussians and Chromatiks are shifting out faster Panays change nationality. And who could blame them?

A Smoking Ruin
Soccer Island abandoned, plans to scuttle entire project

They say the Lithicoans tried to start an everlasting fire at the Lithico™ World Cup 100 Final Stadium on Soccer Island (because that's the sort of thing they do, back home) but in this case the fire actually either kept going out and had to be constantly relit, or it took hold but required fuel in the natural way these things usually do and burned down the whole stadium. Either/or. The Farves deny it of course. They say the stadium was shelled to the ground by the Wightling Armada warship Swampthing, after it's captain lost his pension in a St. Bernadine City investment collapse in the Massive Financial Hack. There can be no denying the Swampthing certainly put on a bit of a firework display at one point during the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict. Whatever the truth of it, the Lithico is a blackened twisted husk these days. There is no pitch, no stands, no expensive executive boxes for billionaires. The whole of Soccer Island, to be fair, has been destroyed by ASL Swampthing, the pyromaniac refugees of Aubinsville Tent City, and the scorched earth tactics of Lithico™'s army of lawyers. The flagship of Taxhavn football, with it's ambitious national team academy and the beautiful Golden Boot Bridge connecting it to St. Bernadine City, is a smoking ruin. Underneath, the man-made von Arnold Island is being mined and wired with dynamite in industrial quantities. Unable to stomach the view of ignominious defeat in the short football war or Bay of Greedy Pigs, and probably not able to afford a rebuild in the current financial climate, the Taxhavn government is going to blow von Arnold all to hell and sink Soccer Island, it's destroyed theme park SoccerLand, the World Cup stadium and the refugee tent city into the depths of St. Bernadine Bay. What will become of the national team dream? FA-Tax are not saying. Missing the last Indies tournament, and the various age group World Cups, it seems that dream is set to sink with the Waltzer, the Dodgems, the Roller-Coaster and the Donut Bar of SoccerLand. Fair well sweet dreams of glory!

FA-Tax Joins The Football Union - Official
Blattini & Reptilino's FU attitude

There's no doubt that, like everyone in Taxhavn who isn't a millionaire, billionaire, trillionaire or even a quadrillionaire - which is mostly Panay domestic staff and factory workers up north - FA-Tax is experiencing a few cash-flow problems what with the financial crash and the multi-zero payouts it had to make in compensation to Lithico St. Bernadine™. It doesn't take a genius to work out that the vast riches on offer from the Football Union would be a mighty attractive prospect right now. Plus of course, with Herr Blattini and Baldi Reptilino running the show these days, a permanent state of money-grab will be the order of the day at football HQ in Taxhavn. The FU's offer for it's IFCF-rivalling club competitions - the Titan's League, the Titanic Challenge Cup, Titanium Bowl, Young Titans and so on - is now said to be nearing ten times the payout of the UICA's bastard child, and Taxhavn has been offered more places in the primary competition than ever before. It is the cash cow that could save the Solitary Soccer League. Founded to bring together all the greatest clubs of the Wightling Commonwealth - Spit City and Extramarine of Wight, Kukalaya's 1883 Dákura Fútsal, Soto Juniors of Chimú, Horsa Bold and Kaleva Lokki RK of Beomark, the mighty Bonesea sides SS Skiveness and Florence Boldclub and of course Sparta Misión with at least forty other world-class teams from Tamarindia. All they are missing are the top Taxhavn sides who have proven themselves more than capable in international club football - Deltic FC, Septentriennes and the rest. Working on an under-the-table 'one for you, one for me, and one for him' cash distribution scheme Baldi & Blatts have pushed the green light button on the FU - and with it, withdrawal from the IFCF. Nobody will much mind, what with the question marks hanging over the allocation of referees and the dark unaccountability of the IFCF Council, held in thrall by a murky shadow that even Blattini and Reptilino find unpalatable. And they maintain a virtual office at the dusty crossroads at midnight for all their big deals, so they should know.

TAX Magazine Multiversal Reversal
Last Word set to be the last word

With Taxhavn football about to turn it's back on the wider multiverse and in particular the IFCF competitions, the Sixteen Bits AI v.26.9.23cfo Chief Financial Officer Edition has declared the collapse of readership for the multiversal issue of TAX Magazine, and with it the laying off of 32 AI agents and the shutting down of human resources with the loss of two part-time jobs. With this final cycle of the TAX Magazine set to become a collectors edition, the 'Last Word' entry at the end of the coming season will indeed represent the last word, and there will be no more words from Taxhavn thereafter. It will be, from us, a long goodnight... but on behalf of all the AI agents on the Sportsdesk, we have to say, it's been a delight. Even though it hasn't really because they are just words that we've learned to parrot as an LLM. But thank you all for joining us in the delusion of reality.

Alright then. We better get on with the show.

Season 102 SSL Review

The Sun Always Shines On The Victorious
The Story Of Season 102

The long-term significance
One of the most significant seasons in the history of Taxhavn football, this marks the beginning of a closed top flight league and the dominance of the two state-backed rivals in ASMV St. Bernadine and Lithico St. Bernadine™. With far-reaching and often corrupt influence on the movement of players, the standard of refereeing, match-betting and results-fixing - always denied - the two clubs dominate the Solitary Soccer League with nine titles between them in the next eleven seasons; only Septentriennes and Tijhuis Archimedes will challenge the hegemony with surprise championships which cost them dearly in official reprisals - especially Archimedes who are more or less dismantled by FA-Tax after their title victory, an incident which leads to the breakaway Northern League and ultimately the end of the Solitary Soccer League.

The story of the season
ASMV started the season a remarkable 20 points behind Lithico - hit with a twelve point deduction for player tapping up, this was suspected to be part of the settlement agreement at the end of the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict which had disrupted the previous season. Meanwhile Lithico were awarded a +8-point 'refund' after previous points deductions were overturned (also as a result of the peace treaty between Lithico™ and Taxhavn). What surprised many in a highly litigious league was that ASMV never complained about the deductions, and it became clear to observers as the season progressed that it was all part of the charade. Both sides clearly had the ear of the authorities, including the referees association, as they benefitted from interventions or oversights from match officials in games, and from FA-Tax officials in the business of running football. Over coming seasons the two 'rival' teams, who ended up ground-sharing at the Athletic Ground and were almost run like a single enterprise with two teams, would share the success equally between them: this year it was Lithico's turn. But the Dragons ran them mighty close, and if it hadn't been for the points fixing, would have won the title with seven points to spare. As it happened no-one ever got close to Lithico on points alone, with the club leading the league from day one to the end of the season, unbroken. The eight point benefit was an undoubted advantage, but even without that, only ASMV were a better team - Tequiloan striker Pompey was almost untouchable, and not just because of the protection he undoubtedly enjoyed from referees. Septentriennes finished an impressive third and certainly gave ASMV a bit of a scare in the hunt for second place, but behind them came a parade of disinterested performances: with no relegation to speak of, the title already decided, and the Football Union offering places for half the teams in the league, there was a distinct lack of competitive edge.

In the Nomarque Nothing™ Tax Cup the scene was set for ASMV to take the alternative prize, seeing their rivals roll over in a 3-1 win when the teams were drawn together in the second round; but when it came to the final, they were surprisingly beaten by four-time finalists De Tike FC. FA-Tax were soon to announce that they had discovered discrepancies in the seasonal accounts submitted by the Clockwork Orange & Blue, and the team would face a severe points deduction for the following season - insisting this was in no way a reprisal for going off-script and winning the Cup for the second time.

For the record books
Away from domestic football, Septentriennes win a third consecutive FFI League of Victors title in their final entry to the independent's intercontinental club tournament, becoming in the process the joint most-successful FFI club of all time and the only team to win the LoV three-in-a-row. This was the last season of Taxhavn clubs competing in the IFCF and FFI competitions, switching allegiance to the Wightling Commonwealth's imperiously wealthy Football Union and it's multi-Titanic competition series. At the other end of the spectrum, BSSC become the top flight team with the least amount of points not to be relegated after winning their relegation play-in against Fortuna Städeli - breaking St. Bernadine Athletic's unwanted record when they litigated their way out of a relegation a decade previously. Athletic of course are best remembered as one of the greatest clubs of all time who stained their reputation by becoming Taxhavn City, and then St. Bernadine Football Team, and then Lithico St. Bernadine™. ASMV's dubious 11-0 victory over HPV Waallen, one of the most egregious examples of refereeing bias even in the days to come, goes in the record books as the biggest win of the national league era outside of the Winter Ruleset (when the goalposts are moved for more exciting and high-scoring games).

Same place tomorrow
With an expanded but closed league of twenty-three teams, there are almost no changes in the league for the next decade before clubs break away to form the Northern League. ASMV win five of the next eleven titles, with Lithico taking four more. Septentriennes and Archimedes each get their single titles while Napoleon and Standard are both favoured by fixers FA-Tax as more competitive teams. Deltic FC, the powerhouse side of recent times, are left stranded in midtable mediocrity but their heritage protects them to some degree from the ravages of jerrymandering faced by other clubs seen more as cannon fodder to the big southern favourites. Northern and western clubs, with the exception to some extent of Raven Thöni, are often treated poorly by the authorities and the referees, which eventually leads to the downfall of the league and it's two most infamous favourites, ASMV and Lithico. After breaking away to form the Northern League Orchideeën, Archimedes, De Tike FC, OSA Cyclista and Kierhuizen Boys rejoin the TAX League and a newly established national top flight. Septentriennes, Deltic FC and Standard Lily will once again compete at the peak of Taxhavn football after two decades in the wilderness.

Moving furthest away
Eventually there is no Solitary Soccer League, and it's favoured children are gone. During the decade and a bit of the SSL still to come, only three teams disappear from the protected roster of twenty-three - in the late stages of the league's short but tainted history northern sides Kierhuizen Boys and Tijhuis Archimedes are both expelled before going on to form the Northern League. The Boys are the first to go after years of vocal and highly visible protest, while Archimedes pay the price for winning the tenth SSL championship without permission. Before that, Dandelion Town FC are swallowed up by Septentriennes who buy out the whole GnejsCo multiclub operation, with the Meadowmen being demoted down to the Tax League as an official feeder club. Ultimately ASMV and Lithico don't survive the collapse of the Solitary Soccer League - Lithico are broken up and liquidated, while ASMV are forcibly subsumed by St. Bernadine Academical. Head of FA-Tax Herr Blattini and his friend the SSL Commissioner, Baldi Reptilino, make off with a mountain of skimmed cash and are last seen buying and selling dead souls in Gogolstan.

Going on to greater things
Lithico's Tequiloan striker Pompey will dominate the SSL as the best thing since Georg Bardo for the next few seasons, but his achievements will be forever asterisked by his place in the Triple-A's domineering side that enjoyed the favour of the ruling elites and the football institutions. Though Bardo himself had retired the season before, he will go on to add his former club Septentriennes to his portfolio of clubs in the GnejsCo operation which he founded, and guide them to a near-impossible title in circumstances where only ASMV and Lithico are permitted to win. BSSC's young Deltic forward Billy Lyeald made his debut in this season and will enjoy a stellar striking career with Standard Lily and Septentriennes, giving him an asterisk-free career at the very top of the Taxhavn game. Orchideeën's young Auprussian full-back Neiron La Farantine, who finished the season on development loan at Aubinsville Pro Kickers, moves away from Taxhavn in the great foreign exodus at the end of the season, and goes on to establish himself as one of the greatest Auprussian defenders of all time, winning everything at club level as well as an IAC medal and his player-of-the-match performance in the famous Auprussian final win at World Cup 103.

Bolstered by winning the billion-shilling Spijker Prize for five consecutive seasons (a prize fund granted to the last unbeaten team in the SSL or TAX Leagues), lower league club Torpedo Tijhuis come to dominate the tier below the SSL, switch to the Northern League when it is founded, and in the post-SSL era have worked themselves into the competitive position as one of the top ten clubs in the country.

Latter Rounds

Cup 'specialists' De Tike FC will appear in a record fourth cup final, looking for an unlikely win against the almost unstoppable ASMV St. Bernadine. The Clockwork Orange & Blue had a tough path to the final with solid wins over Raven Thöni, holders Deltic FC and northern rivals Archimedes to get there, but the job only gets harder as they face not only the Dragons but the refs, the institutions and the ruling party in a stacked final against ASMV. The Dragons knocked out deadly rivals and best friends Lithico St. Bernadine™ in the second round in what can only be seen as a failure of the rigging system which should have kept them apart till the final, and another strong cup team in HPV in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile Lig-4 new debutants Jupiter stunned everybody, not least their own fans, by reaching the quarterfinals, including a famous win over top flight side BSSC in the round of sixteen.

Solitary Soccer League Honours Ball
Ceremony Cancelled, Again

The Soccerati of Taxhavn usually gather at the Grand Bullion Hotel to celebrate another successful season of chaos, bribes, tax breaks, legal arguments and complicated restructures of the professional leagues in Taxhavn; but with 'post-war austerity and all that' FA-Tax cancelled the event for the third season running, issuing only a list of end-of-season awards and sending on the gongs to the relevent players and managers via the Taxhavn General Post Office.

Tequiloan super-striker Pompey became only the second player to win two Golden Balls, the top individual prize in the league, one behind Deltic's Burus Tasher; like Tasher he also has the distinction of winning with two different clubs. Bankers' keeper Garçia de Soto becomes the first goalkeeper to win the Golden Glove in consecutive seasons since legendary Xannerian shot-stopper Ivan Klank for FC Städeli a decade ago. Exciting young defender Yasuda Kazu, 20, becomes the first Huaitese player to get an individual gong for his Golden Pram (youngster) award, as does Pyazhnian Gennady Tikhokhod with his best foreigner Golden Visa - not much use now as he'll be heading off with the great exodus of foreign stars when the transfer window slams open. Talking of foreign stars, Gnejsian league GOAT Georg Bardo is finally parted with his Golden Stick for best foreigner by retiring, the award going to ever-sprightly Ricky Corona, 34, at the Owls ending a record-breaking run of four consecutive sticks for the former Septentriennes striker. Bardo also won two Golden Visas, a Golden Boot for top scorer and a Golden Ball for best player during his colourful stay in the SteuerLig. You can't keep a good man down, however, even after retirement - he receives the first career achievement award, the Golden Scoop, for his contribution to both the football and the football writing over the last decade. No doubt he'll be using it to measure out the flour for his artisan baking projects.

Season 102 TXL Review

The Underligen
The Story Of The Season Below Tier-1

The long-term significance
Cut adrift from the glamour of the Solitary Soccer League with no promotion-relegation access to that top flight division, the former SteuerLig divisions 2-4 combine to reimagine a national football league of curious eccentricity that will - in the end - outlast the SSL and replace it once more as the beloved top of the pyramid. Rebranding as the TAX League or TXL, it sits below the Solitary Soccer League as three divisions of different sizes - 17, 19 and 37 (yes, 37) clubs in descending order - with wild promotion and relegation schemes, and the financial buffer of access to not one but two tiers of intercontinental football thanks to the new alliance with the Football Union. Eventually when the SSL implodes and a breakaway Northern League is formed by malcontents from the north and west of the island, the TAX League stands shoulder to shoulder with the rebels and after two seasons, with the SSL gone and it's two demonic clubs - Lithico and ASMV - dismantled, the Northern League merges into the TXL and a unified, fair, widely loved but distinctly odd professional pyramid is once more reinstated.

The story of the season
With all the big teams facing a lockout from the top flight after this season, there is a sense of desperation in the Soapy Lucre Championship as Boldsea FC, Napoleon St. Bernadine and newly-promoted OSA-Cyclista all take a grip on the division and lead the scramble for the last life-boat. In the end The Bikes can celebrate a second successive divisional title and promotion, and there must be a sense of relief in the halls of FA-Tax that their precious franchise club Boldsea FC also make it back to the big time without having to move the goalposts on promotion. Perhaps the big surprise is the strong finish from 1860 to grab the runners-up spot and a return to the top flight after an ignominious forced relegation due to financial mismanagement and a decade away. The big sides missing out are FZK-Amstell and just-relegated Benson Foxes, who fall through a second trap door to find themselves in the third tier next season. For St. Gight's Albion a bottom-placed finish is inevitable with their points deduction and loss of most of the senior team after the bank that bankrolled them rolls over and dies following the Bay of Greedy Pigs conflict.

For the record books
Torpedo Tijhuis had already won the first four iterations of the Spijkerhuis Prize - a cash fund awarded to the team across the top four divisions of national football to remain unbeaten in the league. With a billion shillings per prize, guaranteed to run for ten seasons, in hindsight it would almost be inevitable that the first winner could then spend that income to make themselves almost unbeatable and win the second, third and probably all of the subsequent prizes. Indeed, in this season Torpedo make it five in a row as they storm to the top of the Molineux Goats Cheese Division One, making them by far the richest club in the whole future TAX League. Kier Spijkerhuis, the egomaniacal owner of Kierhuizen Boys who only offered the prize expecting to create a loophole to inject more cash into his own club without falling foul of Financial Fair Doping rules, finally manages to appeal to FA-Tax to let him off the ten year contract shortly after this payout and Torpedo have to settle for a total winning pot of half a trillion shillings. Even with that, they will become the dominant team of the TXL in the years to come, winning several league titles, and when the SSL finally collapses and all the top clubs rejoin the league, Torpedo are able to stand amongst them as one of the top ten teams of future football.

Same place tomorrow
Several teams accept defeat in the attempt to gain a place in the Solitary Soccer League and partner up with one of the big boys to become an affiliate, joining VF Romainring, Tulip Maartenstadt and Stadler Works who already had those working arrangements. Among them most notably Helvétique Rangers, just promoted back to the Championship, sign on with FC Städeli when nearby rivals Fortuna refuse to cooperate; McCunnald align with De Tike FC and St. Bernadine Apollo with just-promoted Napoleon. All of them benefit enough from the relationship to maintain a strong presence in the Championship, while FZK-Amstell, Fortuna and St. Bernadine Academical all contend regularly for titles with super-rich Torpedo Tijhuis. After the fall of the SSL the reformed FA-Tax force ASMV back to where they began - as a social club of a department of the University of St. Bernadine (USB), and as such, under the sporting auspices of St. Bernadine Academical.

Moving furthest away
Bankrupt St. Gight's Albion fail to find a buyer in time for the following season and are not issued with a licence to play in the TAX League; they eventually reform as a supporter's trust club in the bottom division of the regional Southern League, and enjoy the coming decades as a moderately good and very well supported - by Southern League standards - team in the regional divisions. Somehow they never do manage to make it back into the TAX League, despite its expansion to 37 teams. Supersaurus!, the energy-drink backed small-time big-ideas club from out west continue to press up the league to the disgust of just about everyone in the league, despite the TXL's mission to be more eccentric, more fun, and more plain silly than ever before. Some say it's all the money from the corporate owner, but most think it's the exclamation mark that is the most annoying thing. Eventually there is relief all round when the club is moved, lock stock and two tins of Tyrannocola, to Wight and the Anaian multi-associational LigAzeria.

Going on to greater things
Young Wightling semi-pro striker Eran Duck, 19, makes his debut this season for St. Bernadine Academical as a registered student of USB, where he is reading Futilitarianism in the School of Sisyphian Studies. Initially back-up to Academical's full-time strike partnership of Elias Zumstein and Vydric Glinn, he soon displaces the elder Zumstein as he forms a devastating partnership with Glinn. After just avoiding relegation, the Scholars go close to winning the title the next season and Duck is nothing short of a sensation. Forcibly moved to ASMV as part of their crooked transfer activity, he sets the Solitary Soccer League alight but finds himself under constant house arrest after trying to force a deal to move to a less corrupt club. He is one of the top strikers for the next decade, but never celebrates a single goal until, aged 32 and finally having moved back to his alma mater, Academical, he introduces the 'quacker' dance to the absolute delight of the whole nation.

Disappearing from view
Alain Tulip, 35, the one-club hero of St. Gight's Albion, plays for free in the Albion's final season in the Championship and despite offers to stay in the league, goes with them into the dark reaches of the Southern League, but is kicked off the park in his first season amongst the sloggers and retires to move into the family business selling window blinds.

The Nomarque Nothing™ Tax Cup Final
The Athletic Ground, St. Bernadine

De Tike FC 3–2 ASMV St. Bernadine
Scorers: Enor Perro 50' Argal Carter-Huddy 63' Reinout ten Cate 89' | Amadeus Stålnäve 34' Rinus van de Haar 38'

Fullback Reinoute ten Cate completed a stunning comeback for the Cup Final Kings as De Tike FC overturned a two goal deficit to win the Tax Cup in a five goal thriller. The way things have gone and are likely to go in a domestic football set-up riddled with corruption, there was surely only one nominated winner and that was not going to be the Clockwork Orange & Blue. Having conceded the league title to Lithico St. Bernadine™, ASMV were surely the annointed cup winners ahead of the game, and by half-time, with a two goal lead and the match officials, league officials and the government seemingly on their side, their position looked unassailable. Genjsian attacking midfielder Amadeus Stålnäve and striker Rinus van de Haar had scored in quick succession toward the end of the first half after a dominant display - whatever else you say about ASMV and the catalogue of favours that go their way, they are still a wonderful footballing team. It just seemed a question of by how many they would win as the teams came out for the second half.

Under head coach Nino Hämmerli De Tike should not to be underestimated though, having just finished 7th and qualified for the new FU Titanic Challenge Bowl, and they came out with a couple of positiional switches and some smart tactical adjustments, with their imperious midfield pairing of Enor Perro and Argal Carter-Huddy getting more of the ball, setting the pace of the game, and between them hauling the Clockwork Orange & Blue back into the game with a goal apiece to really unsettle the Dragons. ASMV's Zenegalese defensive sub Bala Keita received his marching orders for two yellow cards in quick succession as the back line came under increasing pressure, and it was from that side of the field that De Tike's late winner came, ten Cate combining smartly with Carter-Huddy and the overlapping Tarik Alomerović to find an inch of space in the box. He made no mistake with a smart strike eluding keeper Maerten van Ghent from a position where perhaps Keita would have had him covered, if he'd still been on the pitch.

The consequences for stealing the Tax Cup from the authorities and rewriting the script without permission could be harsh next season, but the Clockwork Orange & Blue die-hards won't care right now with a summer of celebration ahead.

The 27th League of Victors Final
McKenna Stadium, Orliss, Solgavden

Septentriennes p1–1 Real Anasb
Scorers: Elie Corporon 60' | Hixinio Andrade 90+9'
Septentriennes win 5-4 on penalties

The Bankers won an historic third consecutive League of Victors title in dramatic and nerve-jangling fashion after a tight and rather feisty affair in Orliss. For most of the game it looked like extra time and penalties were inevitable as the momentous occasion of the final seemed to get to both parties and quality football was in short supply. A midfield war of attrition was the order of the day until the game finally came to life on the hour mark when Bankers' player of the season Conor Lightman shimmied past a couple of players in a marauding run down the flank and delivered a superb zinging daisy-cutter across the face of goal, Saterun keeper Jin Jigonhsassee seemed to step over the ball in misjudging its spin, and young Mustardo striker Elie Corporon slid in at the back post to put the ball in the back of the net. Things got more tempestuous after that and a confetti of yellow cards were handed out as the final whistle seemed to stretch back into the following morning as the ref added on more and more time to allow for tellings off. It was in the ninth of an eventual thirteen added minutes that attacking midfielder Hixinio Andrade scored a superb equaliser from distance with a thunderous shot curving away from flailing Garçia de Soto to level things up and send the game into extra time. Real's keeper Jigonhsassee, booked for dissent after Corporon had put the Bankers ahead, received a second card for wildly celebrating the equaliser and left his team a man short for the additional period, with Ismael Sokolov deputising in goal for a scoreless but rough and tumble extra thirty minutes. Just as the ref blew for time and penalties, a scuffle broke out on the touchline between Septentriennes subs Johnny Costello, Tristan Featherstone - the Tikariot striker warming up to come on for the penalty shoot-out - and Real's key striker Edwin Schjelderup along wiht Giacomo Laganà who had just been subbed. All four, and Septentriennes coach Carsten Könneker were given red cards, meaning Real technically finished the game with eight players, while both teams had lost a key penalty taker in Featherstone for Septentriennes and Schjelderup for Real.

Whether that made a difference in the shoot-out is hard to tell, but the first nine were all dispatched in style, and it was the unfortunate Max Nicoloasi, the Real winger who had been announced player of the match at the end of ninety minutes after a commanding display, on the floor in tears after skying the crucial last penalty. Septentriennes, in less than noble scenes, had taken a third consecutive League of Victors, and won it in battling style with the last appearance of a Taxhavn club in FFI competition.

Player of the match: Max Nicoloasi (Real Anasb)

The Last Word (Almost)
Over and out

What to expect next season

Nothing. You'll have to use your imagination and the clues we dropped in the last few posts...

The Football Tourists
In Our Own Words

A kingdom passes into memory

To speak of the end of an era might seem melodramatic, but what can you do when you see the wind changing and turning the page of a closing chapter detailing how the curtain falls on the final note of a long symphony?

Or something along those lines.

Because things are different; you can feel it in your bones. And it’s not all paw-arthritis, as Hardly-Knut would put it.

It’s nothing tangible. Nobody has gone out and said anything conclusive, or started on some final countdown. There has been no gilded herald proclaiming the end of days or any one star twinkling just a tad bit too intensely on the night sky as the ground trembles softly (but with malicious intent).

Wait, hold on.

That’s taking it a bit too far. It’s not a feeling of imminent doom and the utter dissolution - or Rock forbid, petrification - of a civilization. That’s not it.

Thankfully, that would have been truly terrifying!

No, it’s the football.

Something has changed. Or, rather, maybe it’s more that something is about to change? Or that you feel like something is changing, or will change, at some point. Maybe? Forgive a couple of old men and a dog for nostalgically rambling, but there’s definitely something in the air.

Don’t misunderstand us, now!

The pitches are still perfect, the schedule is running on time, the Winter Ruleset is there, goals are being scored and tackles tackled. Penalties are converted and cards handed out. Battles for glory and desperate struggles to avoid heartbreak, it’s all still there. And irresponsibly large sums of money are being spent, that’s of course also still very much the norm. The fans are still up on the stands, laughing or crying, all depending on which way the ball rolls. The FA-Tax are still engaging in their trickeries, and Roterlicht Knockschäft are still the perpetual underachiever.

And we really have no reason to suggest it won’t continue like that for ages to come!

But still, something feels different. Maybe it’s the lingering memories of all that fighting down in the bay, which just gave everything a grim taint, perhaps football most of all? Maybe it’s well-known names leaving and a new generation coming in? Maybe it’s this newfangled take on what international football will look like?

Come to think of it, maybe it’s old age? Because it could be that it’s just us not being able to keep up like we used to!

Or maybe it’s actually about Old Enda not being here anymore. It was we that found him, you know, when he came floating ashore out there off the Ravenser Bight. Is that it, perhaps? That along with Enda Clentin, so died also the innocence of football on the isles?

Whatever the reason, it feels like we’re standing on the edge of an event horizon and when we peer forward into the unknown we can’t see an inkling of the road ahead. Which is often the case with unknowns, granted, but you often have at least a vague sense of what tomorrow will bring!

But the beauty of standing on the edge to the black unknown is that you can always look back. Cast one’s mind backwards and into the known and familiar, where you can revel in the warm and comforting remembrance of what we have witnessed and experienced over the years.

Back to the years when the Triple A was Accountants, Amateurs and Athletic, and not only a gimmick. When the Big Three wasn’t only the extra zeros you tacked onto salaries to tap up the most desirable of the competition. When Kizhuizen Boys were Kozakken Boys and Orchideën and Tijhuis Archimedes were battling it out in the SteuerLig-2. When HKB were Hauser and Kofel and VF Merzberg didn’t have an added «07» and were closer to the top than the bottom (who knows what could’ve been had not Solderman left?). When Shakersen wasn’t Old and Septriennes were just BSN.

Remember when Georg Bardo made his entrance and propelled that very same BSN to the top of things, in a style reminiscent of even older times? When we first saw Valentin Fey handle a ball and before Zubi Zuberbühler was «Super».

To have witnessed the advent of Laurent Lapix and Aslak Hrafninnsson!

To have been there, from reports on the retirement of legend Martin Costello to the expansion that gave us Lig-3. The emergence of the Delts and the age of franchises. The disgrace of having Axis Driessche and their Shocktroopers in the most prestigious salons of the SteuerLig (Knut is still recovering from that time he had half a broken bottle jammed on to his bald pate by Axis hooligans, you know).

And then Lig-4 and all these sponsored league names.

To have seen the rise of Dragons and Little Generals, and a Super Club forever in search of an identity. Old St. Albyn and the emergence of the Meadowmen, fueled by the influx of our surviving countrymen in the aftermath of that unfortunate petrification event.

It’s such a rich world, the world of football on the isle of Taxhavn. Not rich in terms of the amount of shillings coming and going and being piled on top of everything. Of course that is also the case. But no, we mean rich as in immersive, colorful and multifaceted; rich in the truest sense of the word.

The beauty and adventures of the undergrowth!

Drinking to the tune of Hibernien’s fife, the black eyes of Mohrstadt’s Panzer Division, attending forgotten derbies between St. Bernadine Apollo and St. Bernadine Astronomical, or Lada and Torpedo up in Tijhuis. The joy of seeing FC Tinkering actually win something, and the continued resilience of teams like Vigar St. Stephen and Adonis Rensburg.

And, having said all that, to know that there is still more! Grounds yet visited, teams we have never been properly acquainted with.

McCunnald, anyone?!

Come to think of it, perhaps it’s the process of acknowledging that we’ve had the privilege to be a part of something truly unique - a one of a kind experience that soars high above even the closest of competitors - and the bittersweet realization that for any new chapter to begin, another must end. Maybe it’s actually not so much that football is changing, as it is we who have stopped changing along with it, and perhaps it’s all just a sign: that maybe it’s time to pass the torch and make way for a new generation and let them write the chronicles.

In their own words.
