The World Assembly,
Recognizing that marriage is a legal relationship that should not become an involuntary lifelong obligation,
Acknowledging that the ability to legally end a marriage is an important aspect of personal liberty and equal treatment under the law,
Concerned that in some nations individuals are prevented from obtaining a divorce or face barriers that leave them trapped in unwanted marriages,
Believing that fair and accessible divorce laws strengthen justice while protecting the dignity and legal rights of all people,
Hereby:Declares that nothing in this resolution shall be interpreted as limiting any person's right to obtain a civil divorce under the law or regulating religious marriage or religious divorce.
- Defines "divorce" as the legal termination of a marriage through procedures recognized by the state,
- Affirms that every legally married individual has the right to pursue a lawful divorce without discrimination,
- Prohibits governments from imposing arbitrary restrictions that prevent a person from obtaining a legal divorce,
- Ensures that both parties are entitled to equal treatment and due process throughout all legal divorce proceedings,
- Clarifies that this resolution does not regulate the distribution of child custody or child support, which shall remain subject to applicable domestic law, and applies solely to the dissolution of marriage by government,
