[D]Repeal Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking of Persons

Postby Old Hope » Tue Jul 14, 2026 12:52 pm

The World Assembly,

Embarrassed by the numerous flaws contained in General Assembly Resolution 4, Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking of Persons, as follows:

  1. Labour contracts are only unaffected by the ban of forced labour if the term is both finite and fixed. Otherwise, if someone suddenly no longer wants to work despite having consented to it before they could simply do that without repercussions. However, this leads to a number of unwarranted consequences:
    1. It is not allowed to set an indeterminate term for contracts regarding research and development projects, projects that have no obvious end point beyond which work is no longer necessary(e.g. development of medicine could be stopped at any time if unacceptable side effects arise) unless you want to risk your workers stopping working at any time, with no compensation,
    2. As the term needs to be fixed, it cannot be altered, removing any right to fire, or to resign, from a job, regardless of consequences, with grave repercussions for the economy and all employers and employees,
  2. It is not allowed to force criminals to work:
    1. Someone might have been brought up by criminals and used to crime, and, due to the threat of repercussions from or misplaced loyalty to the criminal group they belong to, may not be willing to work voluntarily, but may well be convinced to leave the criminal world behind if taught by example,
    2. Even though forcing criminals to work is easily abusable it would be more sensible to restrict forced prison labor instead of banning it entirely,
    3. It becomes impossible to force someone to pay restitution during incarceration, or reduce the negative economic effects of imprisoning someone,
  3. It is not allowed to force those owing child support or facing other types of debt to work jobs that pay enough to at least partially pay child support or reduce debt, if they are offered it and could legally do that job. This increases the burden on society, and reduces debt enforcement.
  4. As the duty to issue sanctions has been delegated to the World Assembly as a whole, with no qualifier or instructions beyond "comprehensive", this gives the World Assembly organs executing this way too much leeway to act in the name of the World Assembly, and to the detriment of member nations.
Accordingly, the World Assembly repeals General Assembly resolution 4, Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking of Persons.

1: okay sure, this alone doesn’t seem like basis for repeal, but it’s good enough
2. vehemently opposed to forced prison labor. it is essentially slavery, and that suggests that prisoners and criminals are not guaranteed the most basic rights
3. I don’t understand how this would work? Do you expect the government to then force employers to hire them for higher paying jobs? I understand where you take issue, I think, but you phrase it in such a way that suggests that the government force people to take higher paying jobs, and that just doesn’t make sense
4. okay, but that is always how sanctions work…
5. I do somewhat agree with this

if 2 and 4 were removed and 3 was rephrased, full support. otherwise, no

Agree that this is incompatible with a restitution-based justice system (and only favorable to a rehabilitation-based justice system).

A repeal is not a substitution. You must do 2 differents resolutions, like SC#269 and SC#271.

These are incredibly strange arguments that, to my eye, read as you finding any reason you can to throw a fit over the GA.

Opposed, obviously.

And anyway I'd like if the (by now it is almost certain) GA#4 was repealed and not replaced. Violates National Sorveignity.

The resolution prohibits only the following:
“Forced labour” is a system of labour which is forced upon a natural person under threat of harm or penalty and against the will of the labourer

I don't see how your examples fall under this.

It is not allowed to force criminals to work:

I mean you do you but I'm personally on team no forced prison labor
happy Petrov day!

I support your intent, but I will oppose this draft until a better replacement comes up.

This is because the draft makes a logical error: directly inferring that the entire resolution should be scrapped simply because "certain reasonable exceptions might exist." That's why I think Untecna's criticism
you finding any reason you can to throw a fit over the GA
is correct.

The argument in clause 1. is absurd. Subclause a. fundamentally misunderstands how people are contracted to work in research, and subclause b. not only attempts to build on that incorrect premise, but does so in a way that is completely non-sequitur.

Clause 2. is a feature, not a flaw. Opposed.

Clause 3. suggests you think that slavery or forced labor should be okay if someone owes child support, which is not how it works anywhere in the world. Even in the US, where carceral child support enforcement is utilized, it does not create a legal instrument for forced labor except where prison labor is permitted by state law, and, even then, it is not a legal remedy for child support default but a feature of the prison system that creates an instrument for forced labor for anyone in the imprisoned population. And, as stated. Opposed.

Clause 4. is ill-posed, relying on alarmism about "comprehensive" and a lack of restrictions to wring the author's hands with over sanctions against member nations that recognize slavery or trafficking, which notably does not include forced labor or any of the nuances you are so concerned about therein. Yeah, I'm not going to cry about member nations who promote slavery and/or trafficking facing sanctions. Opposed.

Ambassador... A system of labour someone previously consented to but no longer wants to partake in can be very well forced upon a natural person under the threat of penalty and against their will.
And because the term of labour, for the exceptions to apply, needs to be fixed... member states either need to allow fixed terms(with no way out of them) or not(allowing contractors to walk away from their jobs at any time if they no longer consent to that system of labour)
We do not actually support forced prison labour in any and all circumstances.

This is an absurd repeal and very poorly written at that. Grammatical errors, insanely informal language, etc. overall hampering the meaning of the entire draft.
To be entirely honest, we see no world where forced labour, even in prisons, is a good one. All three arguments of point 2 in the repeal we find strange and ineffective. Does one really think being "taught by example" will magically turn a criminal into a righteous citizen, and that it will even vanish the mentioned "threat of repercussions"? The prison system is not run like a corporation, and the primary goal of the government is not to "reduce negative economic effects" but rather to, where law is concerned, ensure a safe society and uphold justice. The representative of Old Hope admits himself that forced labour is "easily abusable". Case closed, no?
