The Marauders were playing as fairly well as could have been hoped for, unbeaten through the first six games of the qualifiers and looking at the next international window with the intent to try and keep it that way. Losing the perfect record in the last match against the Warriors of Milchama had been a bit disappointing but getting perfect qualifying records in the past had not been a signal that the team was going to do well in the Finals. The Finals was the ultimate goal, it was where push came to shove and you either were able to stand your ground or you were sent home. While there was now a few more safety ropes in place with the expansion of the Finals to forty-eight and the inclusion of another knockout round, letting most third placed teams make the knockouts as well, there was still an edge to the World Cup Finals that could not be replicated in any other environment. That edge, that intensity, the gauntlet that you have to run through in order to be crowned as champion was exactly the same reason that winners were given as much respect as they were and multiple time winners all that much more. It is more a dream than reality and yet all who enter into the fray pursue that dream regardless.

If there was a pleasant surprise from this version of the team that was in pursuit of the sixth title, it was that the defense was playing at a far greater standard that what was typically expected of them. Defense is a necessity in Vanorian football but it is hardly ever the priority, a match won five to three or six to two is far more pleasant than one that is won one or two to nothing. While no one is going to look down at getting three points in that sort of game where the defense does shine and is the main factor in the Marauders coming away with the victory, it is not going to be the focal point. In the past the national team has usually relied on highly athletic keepers that could make up for defensive lapses with their reflexes, while letting individually great defenders make up the backline. While it was expected to be more of the same with this team, the back four have found some sort of chemistry where they are playing incredibly well as a complete unit and Propst behind them has been quite a wall when the team has had their shape be broken down by the opposition. A better than average defensive effort will turn the Marauders into an even more imposing team than what they already are.

What was not in short supply was the quality of the attack, although the combination of getting to play Laborious Hawk as a false nine and then have Imre Haaland as the tip of the spear is perhaps a bit of an unfair advantage for the Marauders. You have one of the most technically gifted players to have ever played the game, the captain of each and every one of the Marauders World Cup triumphs and he is playing the support role to a striker who has all the tools as well as the footballing IQ to know where to be and when more often than not. Some explosive wingers who can score when it is needed and it is a recipe for disaster for most of the opposition as they try to figure out who to try and mark out of the game, as there is no clear answer as one of the other attackers or even the midfield could just as easily step up to be the difference. Averaging three goals a game thus far in the qualifiers is a testament to how difficult the free flowing attack of the Marauders is and that the Drawkian's tactics have allowed players a bit of freedom to get forward whenever they want, even if it at times does leave the defense a bit exposed.

The next international is a bit of a point about the oddness of the campaign though, with the team hosting Frayston at the Hatire Memorial, who are winless though they have three draws through their first six. Surprisingly they are not last in the group as Qasden beneath them has had an even more dreadful beginning to their campaign and it comes as a bit of a shock, considering it was not that long ago that Qasden was battling to qualify. On paper it is a game that should be quite like their game against Nueva Compostela, a relatively straightforward game where the side had won three to nothing at the end of the ninety. While that should be the case, they do have three draws to their name and could have a bit of a fight back as they attempt a late start at getting their own qualifying campaign back in order and try to reach for fifth and the last playoff spot. After that, it is a trip to Baker Park, and the Bees are owed a bit of vengeance after winning the last encounter between the two teams when they won in the third placed game against the Marauders in the Empire at the end of the ARC. While the Bees might have the home advantage in the match, and have played exceptionally well to begin the campaign, the Marauders clinical finishing, improved defensive cohesion, and desire to get one over on the Bees should provide ample motivation to grab at least a draw if not a victory to keep the side at the top of the table heading to the halfway point.

After A Long Wait, The Three Stars Squad Finally Taste Their Victory

Aidil Rustam - 30 May 2028

TEMASIK - The disappointment to the team and the coach have been mounted as the team suffer another loss against Qusmo in their fifth qualifying round match. Heading to Qusmo, Serumpun squad detained by 1-0 from their opponent. And then the home match awaits them. The match against Kandorith was held in Temasik National Stadium. The second time the stadium was used for a qualifying match. Just like SFA decision where each host will held 3 matches. And this is Temasik second match. Only Port Campbell that haven't held any match.

The situation was intense right from the start. They face a big name of Kandorith who's likely to suffer some unfortunate match that they fall hard in the group. Of course with facing a low ranked team as Serumpun, they were aiming for a win. Their second win to be exact. But Serumpun was also longing for their first win in international stage. However, the Three Stars Squad still true to their defensive strategy. Trying to halt any advancement made by Kandorith attackers. Some were successful but some almost took them by chance. And one of them even success to score a goal. Kandorith in leading.

The second half, the Three Stars Squad become more careful and seeking chances to equalize their position. And the chance came in minute 50'. It was started as a counter attack lead by Muhaajir which then toss the ball to the left side of the field. It was saved by Saana who's dribbling the ball through the middle of the field. He toss it back to Muhaajir who shot it to Hussain. Hussain face Kandorith defender and saw no chance to shot. His position also still too far from the goal. He looks to the right and shot it to Aznan who free from guards. Aznan take the ball. Dribbling it passed several defenders. On the other side, Hussain, Muhaajir and Adiranjan pushed forward to back up Aznan attack. The situation turn chaotic as Aznan try to shot but it bounce back after heating the goal bar. Muhaajir steal the ball from Kandorith defender and lightly shot it the goal. The ball gliding through the goal line. 1-1, Serumpun equalize their position.

The situation seems to enlighten Kandorith spirit. In the next 10 minutes, continuous attacks happened. Some of them were nearly fatal to Serumpun. But the defenders and goalkeeper were success to defend it. Coach Shankar then substitute some of their defenders to avoid fatigue. Chandranath, Thinley and Parveen were replace by Kurnia, Raharja and Zi Ping respectively. In minute 77, Hussain initiate an attack after the ball was tossed around in the middle of the field. The attack was fast and surprising that Kandorith players were late to response. But the Serumpun attackers move forward immediately to their position. Hussain toss the ball to Sulong who immediately shot the ball to Aznan. Aznan made a long shot to the goal aiming to top left corner. It was a close one. A little mistake then the ball will hit the crossbar. But he did it. He success. The ball flying to the top left corner slightly save from the crossbar and get into the goal. 2-1 Serumpun in lead.

After leading, Coach Shankar doubling their defense. Muhaajir and Hussain were task as the second layer of defense with Saana and Sulong play a wider zone from back to middle field. The strategy success to hold on their leading until the last long whistle was heard from the referee. And Serumpun won their first international match. The supporters overjoyed. The players release their happiness on the field. Some hug one another. Some other kneel down on the field. And other kiss the ground before chanting their pray for the success.

Despite their win, Serumpun stays in the last place of their group. Under fellow Mandalanusan, Eraman and Kendoria. Both have better goal difference and goal for from the Three Stars Squad. This making the next match crucial as they will meet Eraman first before playing against Calgasia

An Aside About the Next Chapter

The next chapter is going to be about the Lorentine names and origins of certain names famous to the Auprussian public. Keep in mind a couple of things about Lorentine culture. Firstly, they are one of the oldest cultures in Auprussia, tracing their origins back to the Lorre tribe which had been documented as far back as 3200 BSE. They have also been influenced by a swathe of cultures including; Auprussian, Basonic, Pied, Vascon, Bervic and even Ostroge. Their location in Auprussia also contributed to this, not only being a trade hub due to the vast river ways in Chagris but the fact that historically they were between great kingdoms for a long time before the founding of the Kingdoms of Eolorent (120 ASE) and Ouelorent (132 ASE). Ouelorent fell shorty after due to a Basonic and Bervic rebellion but Eolorent had lived on for a while longer before also falling to a rebellion (The Origones Rebellion).

The Lorentines had long inhabited the modern region of Chagris and the Lorentine language itself is vastly different and most sources that have attempted to restore the language have solved a good amount of what things meant at the time but certainly not all of it. Once the Settlement Era hit though the Lorentine language had been vastly changed and influenced by those around them to the point where Ancient Lorentine is unrecognizable compared to its more recent counterpart. As noted in the first chapter, the act of putting "Cer" or "Sait" in a name was started with the Lorentines and in modern times has had Auprussians start to do the same (Albeit it's rare still for a non-Lorentine person to do this). There are also enclaves of Lorentine peoples all throughout the central and south of the country due to migrations after the Lorentine kingdoms fell. This had an effect on certain Southern Pied Kingdoms like the Kingdom of Frisia and Artoria, who had a sizeable Lorentine contingent as well.

"Southern Lorentine" has not been acknowledged as a different culture unlike "Sur Frisienne" but there are some key differences between then and their northern brethren. Southern Lorentines do not use "cer" or "sait" at all for their names, instead opting for the Auprussian system of using their father's name and then a secondary name to differentiate themselves. Southern Lorentines have a weird dialectical difference where they run two words together sometimes: For example "Les Roi D'Ilumenes" in Southern Lorentine is "Roi Leilumenes". This is most common in plural nouns but can happen in any context.

The Lorentine names are a nightmare to comb through due to these factors. You have your Old Lorentine names, your modern ones, ones that were exclusively used at the height of the Lorentine Kingdoms' power, even some Southern Lorentine ones can leave you going "where did this come from?". This isn't the only Auprussian culture like this, but for my own money it is the second hardest culture to get the full picture of when it comes to their names' origins, meaning, and popularity.

To say that Igor Topić and the rest of the Wanderers coaching staff were left a bit exasperated at the end of the last match would be putting it quite lightly. The team had performed marvelously against Zwangzug, better than they could have possible hoped against such a high level competitor, with the home crowd helping lead the team on in the victory. A goal from Járngrímur had sent the team on their way and a second half brace from substitute striker Sahir Hana'i Wasem had sent the crowd into a tizzy and perhaps made the scoreline flatter the Wanderers more than the actual balance of the play did. The team had absolutely been deserving of the victory against Zwangzug, they had played perhaps the best game of football in the entire qualifiers thus far against them as you would have hoped to see against the former World Cup Champions, but the three goal margin was flattering when a two goal victory probably would have been a more fair result. Perhaps the cosmos decided to punish the Wanderers for having been flattered with that result with the way the team was completely flat at home against unranked Skorpiie.

"Twice Lazar! Twice we have faced unranked opposition and twice the team has been found wanting! I do not even know how to begin to describe how poorly we played, at least with the game at Epicly Amazing Giraffes the team showed a bit of heart and pulled out the draw, plus that was away. This was a home game against a team we should have been plastering with three or four goals even with play a bit more conservatively to keep the defense screened. Tell me Lazar, what are we even supposed to do with a result like that, this is not club football where we can force the squad to run instead of actually having practice, they all return to their clubs the day after the match." The manager looked a bit manic and slightly frantic as he was pacing through the office, while his assistant was sitting calmly in the corner, leisurely snacking on a bowl of cashews sat beside him. The contrast in the demeanor of the two could not have been larger, which was surprising given that Igor was the older of the two and supposedly the much more calm one, at least that was how he was described during their playing days.

"Listen Iggy, we both know deep down that this is the tradition of the Wanderers, capitulating in games that we really should be completely dominating but somehow fumble it away. It is a bit worrisome that we did this at home, I agree, as the Stade de Torgos has been quite the fortress for the team even during the dark times when we were struggling mightily to qualify for the Finals. However we also know that the team has a way of bouncing back and bouncing back quite well when they do have these games where they come out flat and drop points when they do not, you merely have to look at how the team responded to that away draw at the Giraffes. There is no use in getting worked up over it, you simply have to be able to take in stride and recognize that this happens, these sort of results are exactly why we are in the positions that we are in while Thor is off enjoying his retirement from the game." He grabbed another handful of cashews and threw them back, seemingly non plussed about the result or the fact that Igor seemed to be on the verge of a break down after witnessing the performance the team had just had.

"Look at the schedule Iggy, next month when we have the next window we have two more games against the so called slush pot that this tournament decided to utilize for whatever reason. We get to travel to Nation states logic and that is the first opportunity that you and I get to get into the heads of the players that those sort of performances are not acceptable, that we can not afford to drop points against the lowest teams in the group. A win there, which we should be getting if this team is truly committed to making up for the tragic group stage exit that they had during the Finals in Pavola last edition, keeps the team from dropping points to the bottom three teams in the group. We can then take that result and use the momentum to come back here to the Dual Islands and reestablish the fortress that is the national stadium against Tomerion. That game is going to be a bit more difficult, they have actually been playing decently and have three wins from their first six, currently sitting fourth in the group. While both of these are difficult games they are also the perfect opportunity to get the campaign back on track and get the team's heads on right for the second half of the campaign."

Igor sighed, stepped behind his desk and opened up the top shelf on the right side where he pulled out a stress ball that was designed like a football and gave it a few tight squeezes. As his breath began to normalize, he sat back down and looked at the schedule on his desk, as well as the current table standings that were pulled up on the monitor of the computer. Despite having dropped points twice in the campaign to the weaker teams in the group, the Wanderers still were at the top of the table, even if the margin for error had shrunk considerably. "You're right Laz, we simply have to take it on the chin and move on but by the flames it is so frustrating to do so when you know how important those three points could have been. We now have to win these matches to head into that pivotal game away to Saint Eleanor with a lead at the top and not be a single bad result away from being out of the automatic qualifying spots. The team needs to learn consistency at some point, the stress of not being cut throat against the worst teams is going to give the heart doctors in the Islands far too much business if we can not get them to be that way."

Everything below is information copied from the roster, but pasted here for convenient access:

How to reach Smoltrendestof:
Smoltrendestof is relatively easy to reach, and can be accessed by air from Smoltrendestof Airport, or by maglev from Smoltrendestof International station, which is situated near Conurbation Island, closer to Smoltifort and Trentislau. Great Undersea Maglev (GUSM) and Sernetrail Maglev services operate from the station to various destinations such as Sernetesen, Stensemertef, Hostrisen, Nestomerisen, Sultrisend, Terio, Fraymond and Aberstorff. The map can be viewed here. Getting around Smoltrendestof is also easy, with the island having its own railway network operated by Sernetrail under the Smoltrendestof Railways brand, which is further divided into four sub-operators: Metrorail, for metro and commuter services in the conurbation, East Smoltrendestof Railway (ESR), for regional and semi-fast services in the east, West Smoltrendestof Railway (WSR), for regional and semi-fast services in the west, and Smoltrendestof Express, for express services (as the name suggests), but they are not quite high-speed.

Football History:
Football took off in Smoltrendestof a bit later than it did in Sernet, with the formation of two clubs, Smoltrent River FC and Klangersted Imperial, in the middle of the nineteenth century, both of which still function today. However, the people of Smoltrendestof would also eventually be captivated by the game, and eventually a league was formed on Smoltrendestof, consisting of eight teams across the colony. Today there are 24 professional clubs on the island split into two leagues of 12 teams. Until recently, the colony was under Sernefoot, the football association of Sernet, but following the formation of SIFA, or Smoltrendestof Independent Football Association, the leagues were now run by them and Smoltrendestof became entitled to its own "national team," despite not actually being a nation.
The twelve clubs in the Smoltrendestof Premiership are the aforementioned Smoltrent River FC and Klangersted Imperial, as well as Rockistide Tridents, Staffonden MFC, Alliance Smoltifort, Sporting Trentislau, FC Blockport, Stoneshore Warriors, Pledwater UFC, Dosmingen Town, Toferis Island and Conurbation Island, the final club being based on the same island as the government.

NCSO FINALS, PART II
MWH: Here we are, ladies and gentlemen, into the second half of tonight's incredible Football NCSO Finals between Luther College of Engineering and Trosspine Medical College. Looks like all the players are heading onto the field, ready for another half of some amazing football. Sebastian, do recap for us what happened in the first half.

SL: Of course, Miranda! LCET seemed to be struggling in regards to their offense, a lack of coordination being noticeable. Admittedly, it was quite boring for a while as TMC stayed on the defense. However, before the end of the first half, one side went on the decisive offense. Christian Derek scored through a one-on-one against LCET goalkeeper Jeremiah Jacobson-Jones to give TMC the lead. And now, LCET are looking to take one back. Looks like all the players are ready, why don't you start this off Miranda?

MWH: Of course, Sebastian, thank you for the opportunity. And now here we are! Kick-off has begun!

James scrolled on social media, seeing how other people were reacting to the match between LCET and TMC. Some were amused, others were not.

"LCET downfall deserved, some of them got too big egos," a post by @UnderXScore said. "TMC just got lucky, GO GET THEM LADS," was another by @SirSirree, clearly an LCET supporter. It was interesting how some people tend to have completely different interpretations to what is occurring in front of them. Whether that be directly in the stadium, or even when they're watching the game at home. Some people have some things they wish to say, regardless of what other people think. He doubts he will ever understand it.

"I'm back." James hears, the words of his wife Adelline. She had to go to the toilet, largely due to the amount of soda she had drank. "Did I miss anything?" She then proceeds to ask. James shook his head, easing his wife's woes. "They just kicked off again, don't worry about it." He responded. Adelline had a sigh of relief as she sat down once more.

James wasn't sure what to expect, really. As the minutes tick by, he sees that despite the fact that they were behind, LCET weren't at all at a rush. They seem to be at ease now, what with their midfield finally having some sense of coordination. Isabelle Lawrence, who he knows to be LCET's coach, seems to have either changed how their team operated or perhaps had some "encouraging" words to tell. Either way, seems like they were serious this time. But he was not all too worried, knowing his daughter and her team.

TMC were a new, defensive powerhouse. They had stayed on the defense for a vast majority of the first half, and it looks like they're sticking to that. Whenever LCET were looking for an attacking angle, TMC blocked them off and struck on the counter, though failing to convert. Maybe it was intentional for them to not score more, focusing on defending rather than getting too comfortable. LCET had made comebacks before, most recently in their Quarterfinals match. Halfway, they were 3-0 down, then 3-4 up by the end.

Artemis University of Arts were the victim in that match-up, and maybe TMC didn't want to repeat their mistake. "Silvie and her team have this in the bag, no, sweetie?" Adelline asks, continuing to snack and drink alongside him. James gulps down some popcorn before answering. "Too soon to tell, anything can happen. But I hope they do."

Every second was, admittedly, somewhat stressful, knowing that their daughter would make history alongside her teammates and friends.

TMC shaved off LCET's offensive attempts again and again, though from observation, both sides were slowly getting tired. Was TMC going to settle it in the full ninety? Would LCET pull it into extra time? Perhaps drag on into penalties? James, and to an extent Adelline, along with the entire stadium, could tell the play was extremely suffocating right now.

TMC were tiring faster, you could easily tell. Anyone could. The fatigue was getting to them more compared to LCET, whom while were also exhausted, were still raring to go knowing they had the momentum. In the dying minutes of the game, all of this came to a head when LCET had a goal kick, planning to strike knowing time was out despite their efforts.

SL: Dying minutes of the game here, LCET need something if they want the chance for a title. Jacobson with the goal kick, looks like he's signaling for something. A last ditch assault perhaps? Whistle blown and he's kicked it high- No, wait! He's kicked it deep! Oh no, TMC have been caught off-guard!

MWH: They've been stiffened out and are exhausted, Michael Harper is through! There's no offside, this is their final opportunity! Oxmore has to save it otherwise it may be disastrous! Holtzer right behind Harper as he runs forward! OUTSIDE THE B- HOLTZER SAVES IT! A TACKLE FROM BEHIND WITH PINPOINT PRECISION! TMC ARE CLEAR!

SL: And just in time too Miranda! The whistle has blown! TMC HAVE DONE IT, ONE OF THE BEST CINDERELLA RUNS THE NCSO HAS WITNESSED!

The cheers were, in it's simplest form, loud. Extremely loud, considering what the had witnessed.

A final assault foiled by a last ditch effort of a tackle. Had it been a foul, the upcoming penalty would have for sure given LCET the equalizer. But no, of course, it was Silvie Grace-Holtzer who made that final effort of snuffing out the hope that LCET had for a goal. Trosspine Medical College had done it, they had done the unthinkable and were the best college football team in the entirety of Aphrilia. A fairytale ending for a fairytale run.

"They did it, love. They all did it." Adelline spoke, hugging her husband. James hugs her back, knowing that. Their daughter, the sons and daughters of many other parents, pulled off something incredible today. The cheers were still going, since everyone was feeling ecstatic. So much so that some had invaded the field for celebrations.

"We'll meet with her after team celebrations. She deserves some time on her own." James spoke, opening his phone. Adelline said nothing, and James took it as her not objecting to the thought. She should celebrate with her friends before they meet up. He had noted that Silvie did read the message he sent during half-time, which meant she knew that they were here. That makes things easier. But what doesn't is the fact that there was an email addressed to him. It was from a man known as Leonardo Bianchi.

Treading Water

Beating Tanirinthia, the 5th-ranked team in the multiverse, should've been cause for great celebration within this team and its fanbase. After all, this was exactly the win that was needed to get this Owls team out of the rut they found themselves in, and actually start getting things done.

Instead, all of it ended up being short-lived as a generational collapse against the group's 6th seeded team ensued. They didn't just lose to Dantopia, they lost by four goals.

For Pavel Madinov, who allowed 5 goals in his first start of the cycle, this was absolutely devastating. “I went out there, I gave it my all… these guys just tore me to pieces. There's no two ways about it, that was a bad, bad performance.”

The post-match press conference was another absolute grilling for Melissa Carey, but she was used to these at this point. “Two losses to teams ranked far below us in the last three matches,” Josh Seametzle asked, “how do you think this happened?”

“You know, I'm honestly not sure. We've been doing well at home, two games, two wins.* The moment we play matches away, things just turn completely sour. 1-0-3? We should be doing a lot better than this, we all know that.”

This complete inability to produce anything in away matches left the Owls in a very difficult spot. 6th place as the midway point of the campaign rapidly approached? Not ideal. In a format where every place above that meant a better chance at qualifying than the one below it, you ideally want to be salvaging a 3rd place finish out of it, or even a 2nd. For this team, it should be possible, but it would take a lot of work to build back from this hole.

The next international break was looking good however, as a home match against Xanneria awaited, followed by a trip to last-placed Alamunnic States. As much as this team had problems away, this one should be less of a struggle than the rest. Keyword, of course, being should.

“We're in a bit of a pickle,” Mel said at the conference, “there's no real denying that. But this is our opportunity to get out of it, and this team is more than ready for it.”

Later, ENN Sports would reach out to former manager Kenny Morgan at ESF headquarters for comment, and he didn't have all that much to add. “I'm honestly not sure what you think I might have to say beyond what Mel's already said, you know how much I trust her judgment on all matters related to the team… I know how many people have been thinking ‘oh they'd be so much better off with Kenny still in charge’ and I don't know how to break this to you, but no, get that out of your head. She's every bit as good as I was, if not better. Teams have problems sometimes, and you can't always blame it on the new management.”

The Eshialand City Journal
June 21st, 2034

Maryansk, Klysevian Autonomous Region — The ever-reclusive town of Maryansk has once again chosen to keep themselves reclusive, as the proposed Great Western Line extension to the KAR was voted down in Tuesday's local plebiscite.

Expanding Eshian National Rail has always been extremely popular in the nation, but Maryansk has always resisted, preferring to remain more isolated, despite the potential economic benefits. Critics of their decision were quick to point out that they were fine with cars coming in and out, and FC Dynamo’s continued participation in Lliga 0 would ensure that some measure of cars would continue to come in and out of the town.

“We’re at a point now where we want to get rid of the idea of the club bus,” Reial Eshialand City and Lliga 0 chair Dominic Forner commented, “but we're stuck with having to leave this wasteful thing in Asheton to shuttle teams to and from Maryansk. Frankly, it's a little ridiculous.”

His sentiment is shared by many who wish to do business with the town of Maryansk, but are faced with the sheer difficulty of traveling there. “If their goal is keeping themselves isolated, they're doing a damn good job of it.” one business owner, who asked not to be identified, lamented.

While many of the older generation in Maryansk support their current state of semi-isolation, the younger generation are getting frustrated by their lack of opportunities. “There's no way out of here!” 18-year-old Aleksandriya Reyanova complained. “I want to be able to go to college, but they may as well all be on another planet because of how hard it is to leave. And you can forget about working here… there's no business!”

The KAR’s status is less autonomous than Aleirave’s, but any decisions involving national programs such as ENR still require local referenda, and to a majority of voting-age residents, as 56-year-old Igor Pazhky put it: “you can keep us out of it.”
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

WABENHAFT & RHAZA WAR - NATIONWIDE PROTESTS AFTER NATIONAL COURT RULING

Choppingen - Following a controversial ruling by Choppyhausen’s highest court, several large demonstrations have taken place over the weekend in the country’s major cities.

The human rights organization AID, which had called for the protests, reported approximately 20,500 participants in Choppingen, 12,000 in Estrau, and 9,800 in Vastonburg, among other figures. The unrest was triggered by a ruling from the National Court regarding the Trade Limitations Act, which Choppyhausen’s highest judicial authority issued on Thursday.

The Trade Limitations Act, which was passed in 1962 under Queen Catharina, prohibits the Choppyhausen government—which had complete control over the national industry in the 1960s—from, among other things, sending weapons to countries actively involved in a war or a similar armed conflict. After the fall of the monarchy, the new democratically elected coalition consisting of the Party for a Free Republic (PFR) and the Ecological Party of Choppyhausen (EPC) sold large portions of the industry formerly under monarchical rule to private companies, including, most recently, large portions of the arms and defense industry, to the private company Wabenhaft.

The National Court’s ruling now makes it clear that the Trade Limitations Act and its restrictions on arms exports do not apply to private companies such as Wabenhaft. A scandal, according to a spokesperson for AID, especially in light of the current open hostilities between Kalixia, Sentinopolis, and Rhaza. An official statement from AID reads:

“The government is currently attempting to circumvent the Constitution behind the law’s back, and that at the expense of innocent lives. Wabenhaft profits from the suffering and misery of the people in Rhaza, while PFR & EPC point the finger at others. This is a scandal without parallel!”

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lacey Daniels (EPC) condemned the attacks by Kalixia and Sentinopolis in a press conference last week and called on all sides to seek a diplomatic solution. She dismissed Wabenhaft’s role as “minor to insignificant.” A spokesperson for the arms manufacturer declined to comment when asked by BSC.

When the teams arrive in the arena, they're no longer pretending that this is just a normal cooking competition. Granted, anything with Motyka in it should never be described as "normal," but in any case, the atmosphere has changed, both among the audience, the judges and the contestants.

The second the lights flare across the Nine Circles to Glory kitchen, Motyka is already pointing suspiciously at the ceiling.

“I will not like this episode."

"Why?" Solfroy asks, tilting her head.

"There’s going to be a twist.”

“There is always a twist,” Solfroy replies.

“No, but this one will feel personal, I can sense it.”

“You say that every episode.”

“Because they keep attacking me.”

Henrik leans toward his microphone from the judges’ table. “For legal reasons, we need to clarify that the production team is not specifically targeting Wiołeta Motyka.”

Motyka points at him immediately. “You stole my chili paste.”

“That was Team Belfrage.”

“You enabled them emotionally.”

Even Ante briefly chuckles.

Across the room, Davorka is practically bouncing already.

“Seafood round,” she says excitedly. “Oh, this is ours. Ante, this is ours.”

Ante nods once. “Yes.”

That is, somehow, the most confident anyone has looked all season, likely rooted in the duo's Mytanar heritage.

Iardwallon steps forward. “Welcome back to Nine Circles to Glory. Last round gave us shocking creativity, existential vegetable warfare, and what may be the first recorded instance of fermented plum vengeance.”

Motyka bows, but Chef Voss still looks faintly haunted by it.

“But today,” the host continues, “precision matters more than ever. Because our theme category does not take getting strongarmed lightly. Round Four: Seafood Mastery.”

Seven people relax.

Solfroy smiles faintly. “Okay. Good.”

Andarra looks interested. Grimaud looks relieved to finally have protein again. Davorka actually claps.

Motyka narrows her eyes. “Fish are slippery. This feels tactical.”

Iardwallon raises a finger.

“And today’s stipulation...”

"I knew it, I knew it, I knew it," Motyka repeats like a mantra, her eyes closed.

“...is inspired by the unpredictability of the sea.”

Henrik immediately groans. “Whenever they phrase it poetically, it means suffering.”

“Halfway through the challenge,” the host continues, “a storm will hit the kitchen.”

Motyka blinks. “Excuse me?”

“At a random point,” the host says cheerfully, “each team will lose access to one major cooking method for the rest of the round.”

“What does that mean?!” Davorka yells.

“It means,” Chef Voss says with visible enjoyment, “you may suddenly lose your oven. Or your stovetop. Or your fryer.”

Grimaud actually looks offended. “You cannot do this to Covergnian cuisine.”

“We literally can,” Henrik replies. "And will."

Ante just folds his arms. “Good.”

Davorka stares at him. “Good?!”

“Sea changes.”

“You sound like a man who was raised by storms.”

Ante shrugs. “Basically.”

The timer appears again. 90 minutes to master the sea.

“Your time starts now!”

The pantry assault begins immediately, but it feels strangely understated and focused. Sea bass. Mussels. Squid. Shrimp. Octopus. Salmon.

Motyka grabs octopus and immediately holds it up triumphantly. “BEHOLD.”

“It looks like it died angry,” Solfroy says.

“That means flavour.”

“No it doesn’t.”

Team Belfrage move with eerie precision again once again, white fish, shellfish, citrus, herbs. Grimaud reaches seafood and visibly reconnects with life itself. “Ah,” he says softly. “Now we cook again.”

Morris smiles. “You seem happier.”

“I can use butter again.”

Storm and Sea are terrifyingly synchronized now. Davorka grabs mussels while Ante secures squid and sea bass without even speaking. They move around each other effortlessly, years of instinct suddenly clicking into place.

“Oh, this is dangerous,” DeLuca says from the judges’ table. “They know exactly what they’re doing.”

Henrik nods slowly. “That confidence worries me. But not as much as Motyka. I would double-check a glass of water she poured straight from a tap.”

Chaos and Fire begin... aggressively.

“We should char the octopus,” Motyka declares immediately.

“We should cook it properly,” Solfroy counters.

“Coward.”

“Survival enthusiast.”

Motyka starts marinating seafood with enough chili and garlic to classify as an event.

Solfroy watches carefully. “...less.”

“There is no less.”

“There absolutely is.”

Meanwhile, Team Belfrage are constructing what already looks expensive.

“We focus on precision,” Andarra says. “Seafood punishes mistakes.”

Socorra nods while slicing vegetables paper-thin. “Unlike Motyka, who apparently survives them.”

Across the room, the Old Guys are fully in their element with foaming butter, sizzling garlic and Grimaud moving with renewed confidence while Morris quietly balances flavours beside him.

“This feels better,” Morris notes.

“Yes,” Grimaud says. “Civilization has returned.”

And then - the storm hits. Not just proverbially. The lights flicker blue. Thunder crashes through hidden speakers. Wind machines kick in dramatically because this show has clearly lost all restraint. Davorka screams laughing.

Motyka points upward. “I KNEW IT. Solfroy, I told you! Call me Motradamus!"

Iardwallon’s voice booms across the kitchen.

“THE STORM HAS ARRIVED.”

A giant wheel descends from the ceiling.

Henrik is openly delighted now. “Oh, this is cruel.”

The wheel spins.

Chaos and Fire:
NO STOVETOP

Motyka freezes. “WHAT.”

Storm and Sea:
NO OVEN

Davorka gasps. “NOOO—”

Team Belfrage:
NO FRYING

Socorra shrugs, "Weren't planning on that anyway."

The Old Guys:
NO GRILL

Grimaud looks personally insulted by fate. “This is sabotage.”

Chaos and Fire implode instantly.

“No stovetop?!” Motyka yells. “How do they expect me to become dangerous now?!”

“By adapting,” Solfroy says firmly. “We still have the oven.”

“Our octopus isn’t ready!”

“You overcomplicated it!”

“I made art!”

“You made problems!”

Motyka attempts to pivot into roasting everything aggressively.

Solfroy watches her dump another alarming spice blend into a bowl.

“...what is that?”

“A vision.”

“No.”

“A dream.”

“No.”

“A prophecy.”

“No!”

Motyka reaches for another ingredient. Solfroy finally snaps. She grabs a whole fish from the station and smacks Motyka across the shoulder with it.

“FOCUS,” Solfroy snaps.

Motyka stares at her in stunned silence. “...you hit me with a fish.”

“I will do it again.”

“...that was....”

Solfroy throws the fish back onto the counter. “Cook!”

Meanwhile, Storm and Sea become terrifying. No oven? No problem. Ante immediately pivots entirely to open flame, pan-searing seafood with absolute confidence while Davorka builds layers around him at machine-gun speed.

“Paprika oil!”

“Yes.”

“Charred lemon!”

“Yes.”

“Herb salad?”

“Yes.”

“We are unstoppable!”

“Maybe.”

“You love me.”

Ante says nothing.

Davorka gasps dramatically. “THAT WAS BASICALLY A CONFESSION.”

Team Belfrage continues to flow elegantly.

“Frying destroys flavours,” Socorra hums.

“Exactly, it requires delicacy,” Andarra replies calmly.

Poached shellfish. Raw elements. Citrus curing. Their station looks less like a competition and more like a luxury restaurant kitchen.

The Old Guys suffer quietly.

“No grill,” Grimaud mutters. “Seafood deserves flame.”

Morris adjusts the pan gently. “Then we give it smoke another way.”

Grimaud pauses. "If you say so."

“Ten minutes!”

The atmosphere shifts once more as renewed focus ripples through the teams. Chaos and Fire somehow recover from near-collapse. Motyka’s roasted octopus actually smells incredible.

Solfroy tastes the sauce and pauses.

“...damn it.”

Motyka grins wildly. “I transcend.”

“You nearly destroyed us.”

“But did I?”

“Yes. Several times.”

Dish presentations begin.

Chaos and Fire step forward first.

Solfroy clears her throat. “This is charred octopus with smoked pepper glaze, roasted vegetables, herb oil, and fire-roasted citrus. NO fermentation or plums anywhere in sight.”

Henrik raises an eyebrow. “You survived.”

“Barely,” Solfroy says honestly.

Motyka points proudly. “Fish violence made us stronger.”

The judges taste, followed by a moment of silence.

Then DeLuca laughs softly. “Okay, that octopus is fantastic.”

Chef Voss nods slowly. “Excellent recovery under pressure.”

Henrik points toward Solfroy. “You should hit her with seafood more often.”

Motyka gasps. “Betrayal.”

Team Belfrage present next.

Andarra gestures elegantly. “Citrus-cured seafood with poached shellfish, herb broth, and shaved vegetables.”

The plating is stunning and would not be out of place in a high-end restaurant. The judges taste carefully.

Chef Voss closes her eyes briefly. “Technically exceptional.”

DeLuca nods. “Very refined.”

Henrik tilts his head. “You two cook like you’re trying to seduce Michelin inspectors.”

Socorra actually snorts laughing.

The Old Guys step up.

Grimaud gestures toward the plate. “Butter-poached fish with smoked mussel broth and herbs.”

Henrik immediately points. “There’s the butter.”

“Yes, I had to make up for last week.”

The judges taste.

DeLuca sighs happily. “That broth...”

Chef Voss nods approvingly. “Deeply comforting.”

Henrik smirks. “The old men continue refusing to die.”

Grimaud nods once. “Correct.”

Then, finally, Storm and Sea. Davorka looks genuinely excited now.

“Okay! So this is pan-seared sea bass with grilled squid, paprika oil, charred lemon, herb salad, and mussels in white wine—”

Ante nods once. “Simple.”

Henrik blinks. “Simple?”

The plate looks phenomenal. The judges taste and immediately stop talking. Chef Voss takes another bite, while DeLuca just points at the plate repeatedly while chewing.

Henrik slowly leans back.

“...oh,” he says.

Davorka grabs Ante’s arm hard enough to nearly dislocate it. “THAT’S GOOD OH GOD THAT’S GOOD—”

Ante allows himself the smallest smile yet.

“Yes.”

Chef Voss finally speaks.

“This,” she says carefully, “is your best dish by a considerable margin.”

Davorka looks seconds away from tears.

DeLuca nods emphatically. “This tastes alive. Coastal. Confident. Everything works.”

Henrik points at Ante. “You terrifyingly competent man.”

Ante shrugs. "We are Mytanar." As if that explains everything.

The deliberation isn’t even close this time.

Everyone knows it. Even the contestants know it.

Motyka leans toward Solfroy. “Yeah okay they got us.”

“Yes.”

“They cooked like sea witches.”

“Yes.”

At Team Belfrage’s station, Socorra exhales. “Damn.”

Andarra nods once. “Beautiful execution.”

The Old Guys accept reality with dignity.

“They earned it,” Morris says.

“Yes,” Grimaud agrees.

The judges return. Iardwallon grins widely.

“I think we already know where this is going.”

Chef Voss smiles openly now. “The winners of the Seafood Mastery Challenge... Storm and Sea.”

Davorka SCREAMS. “YES—YES—FINALLY—”

She grabs Ante’s face with both hands. “WE WON.”

Ante, somehow still calm, nods once.

“Yes.”

“That is not enough excitement!”

A tiny smile appears again.

“...good.”

Davorka points at him triumphantly. “There! THERE IT IS.”

Henrik gestures toward them. “That dish had identity. Confidence. You stopped reacting and started owning the round.”

Chef Voss nods. “If you cook like that consistently, you become very dangerous.”

Ante simply folds his arms. Davorka beams like sunlight. Across the room, Motyka raises a finger dramatically. “I demand a rematch with the ocean.”

Solfroy immediately grabs another fish threateningly.

Motyka points. “See?! Abuse.”

“You deserved it.”

“I probably did.”

Another four points for the Viola: Snestar keeps holding onto second place, keeping a fragile balance. Crucial match incoming against Captina Islands

Matchday 5 and 6 have proved that Snestar's squad still need some maturity: despite the overall positive results, Snestaryan media has noticed frequent mistakes in big matches, signaling that the Viola still needs to become a more cohesive national team. Edoardo Di Palma has already stated that he intends to introduce team-building excercises into the training schedule, to ensure that the players fully get along with each other, to maintain the same level of concentration throughout all types of matches.

Snestar 2-1 United Aidakes: Match Summary

The clash between the Viola and the roster-less United Aidakes was almost completely cramped into ten minutes. The Stadio Quattro Venti in Carvella (a modest 21000 seater stadium for a fairly modest city, just like the homonymous club modestly lurking in Division Alpha's mid table) was not as full as expected, considering the weight of this particular qualifier round, but the few Snestaryan fans present made sure to cause some problems for the organizers, mostly because of a loud minority of citizens of Claminya storming the stadium moments before the first whistle: thankfully, no violent clashes took place during the match, but the police had to intervene to make sure some semblance of order was present throughout the entirety of the ninety minutes. Against United Aidakes, the Viola played somewhat mediocrely: the only stand-out was Giacomo Martinelli, the Viola's second choice striker, who'd been thrown into the pitch after Tero Sjölund suffered some cramps in the early minutes. In the 21st minute, Martinelli opened up the match thanks to a perfectly placed free-kick in the far-left corner, finally finding his goal after recently coming back from a long injury that prevented him from playing for Rofflavya for months. Despite the apparent lack of proper form, the young Snestaryan seemed in great shape, making light work of the opponents' defense and creating dangerous chances with ease. However, just three minutes later, a large miscommunication between Rinaldo Larizza and Fabio de Rossi caused United Aidakes to immediately equalize, bringing the score to 1-1 and initially vanifying the Viola's advantage. Still, Martinelli proceeded to bring Snestar back in the lead in the 29th minute, giving spectators the illusion that the match was actually going to be a thrilling goalfest. Unfortunately for them, Edoardo di Palma urged the Viola to fall back into a defensive deadlock, transitioning into a 5-3-2 in the second half, and keeping the scoreline at 2-1 until the referee blew the triple whistle.

Biyambi 1-1 Snestar: Match Summary

Matchday 6 resulted in another disappointing display for the Snestaryan defense, despite the somewhat positive result granting the Viola an extra point against a higher ranked nation. During the first half, the Snestar felt the same overwhelming pressure that was put in place by Kamijiro back in Matchday 4, but this time the Viola couldn't hold Biyambi's attack well enough to maintain a clean sheet: in the 13th minute, a mistimed tackle by Valentino Garnati over Limbikani Chiwaya caused the referee to award a penalty, immediately converted into a goal by none other than Chiwaya. Luckily for Garnati, VAR decided to only give him a booking, as falling to ten men against a superior opponent (on paper) would have been a disastrous outcome. During the remaining first half, the Viola struggled to reach Biyambi's goal, and was forced to remain within its own half of the field, becoming more and more tired as time passed. Edoardo di Palma's half-time substitutions (Scognamiglio for Cremisi, Maritan for Garnati) help solidify the defense, in order to prepare for a potential counter-attack... and the equalizer eventually came! But not the way the Snestaryans were expecting. Around the 68th minute, the Viola was practically juggling the ball around, trying to desperately find a crack in Biyambi's pressure to break through the midfield. That's when Riccardo Cavaliere started to slowly bring the back five forward, guiding the Viola until the Snestaryan left-back found himself together with Fabio de Filippi and Tero Sjölund, carefully maintaining the pressure until Cavaliere himself finally found the right space to slam the ball right through Exildah Munsaka, bringing the scoreline to 1-1. After another dangerous stint by Chiwaya in stoppage time, proudly saved by a very focused Federico Calvaresi, the Viola managed to bring a home a useful draw.

After the final whistle of Biyambi - Snestar, we decided to interview Edoardo di Palma. He seemed somewhat upset with the underwhelming displays shown in the last two matches, but he was still eager to respond to the media's question nonetheless.

“We ought to become more secure. There's not much else to say, honestly. We make too many mistakes in the non-possession phase, and this allows the opponents to break through our system. I know it sounds obvious and stupid, but in reality it's the little things that make you lose a match: one pass too long, and a striker creeps in out of nowhere and... Boom. One goal conceded. I'm still quite content with the four points taken home, but Captina Island is next on the list, and they're two points behind us in the table... It's a crucial match for us, if we want to secure direct qualification.”

Yasmin: Welcome to The VARroom! we have just come off of two games that has one of our collages absolutely fuming and celebrating at the same time. But first, I must appologise for us not being on air after matchdays three and four, we had some technical errors here at the studio.

Bahav: I don't want to talk about matchday six...

Lalia: The match against Bakhuchistan wasn't that bad. We got two goals from Karamzin! Both were simple tap ins, but it doesn't matter.

Bahav: Yea, but then we were just out scored by a team that is only attack.

Yasmin: The game was rather boring, it was a defensive masterclass from Bakhuchistan. There should have been more goals, according to the XG of the game.

Stev: Let's talk about the more exciting Oberour Ar Moro game!

Bahav: I will kill you if you go too far Stev!

Stev: Okay I won't, maybe...

Lalia: Well it was us being mostly defensive against a highly attacking team, Vostrov had so many great saves.

Yasmin: Yea, but the only times that we made it past midfield we got goals, but Oberour Ar Moro controlled the possession.

Lalia: Yea, so it wasn't really that interesting Stev...

Stev: I know I just wanted to make Bahav angry...

Bahav: Alright come here!!!

Chapter 1 - Amala
Chapter 2 - Ledang
Chapter 3 - Temasik

Chapter 4 - Pekan

When we arrived in Tikariot for the fourth match, the fans were already dreaming. Seven points from three matches. Second in the group. Suddenly everyone started calculating qualification chance.

On paper, Tikariot were the strongest team in the group. Ranked sixth in the world. World Cup semi-finalist just 2 editions ago. The match was played at Oceanview Stadium in Port Rhovanyon in front of sixty thousand people. What I remember most was not the size of the crowd but how organized everything felt.

Even during warm ups, the supporters moved together like they had done this a thousand times before. We stood not knowing what to do when the Tikariot players walked towards the center circle and formed a triangle for the Thunder Clap.

When one drum started beating, the whole stadium clapped. The players and crowd, together. It was like they were performing a ritual. We were stunned staring at them.

“What the hell is this?” that was how Faiz reacted when he saw that.

No one replied to him.

Then the match started. We knew right away they were better than us. We just couldn’t keep up. They scored their first early in the first half. We tried to respond after that. We really did. But couldn’t find a way.

They then scored their second late in the second half after we pushed too many players forward trying to equalize. 2-0. Game over.

Nobody spoke much inside the dressing room after the match.

“This is the level,” Coach Tan Chong Wei said after the match.

Nobody argued with him because everybody already knew.

__________

On our way to Pekan, we stopped at a small stall by the river before sunset. The owner recognized me straight away.

“Are you Azman Arifin?” he asked.

“A long time ago,” I replied.

He laughed at that before asking us to sit.

The boys ordered cendol while I stood near the river for a while.

“Have you played against Pekan before?” Aidil asked after joining me.

“Many times,” I said.

“Big rivalry too?”

I shook my head.

“Why?” he asked again.

I paused for a bit.

“Hard to explain.”

And honestly, I don't even know why.

“So what’s special in Pekan?” he asked again.

“Silver catfish,” I answered.

“What?” he asked again in disbelief. Couldn't believe that a fish could be that special.

I laughed.

The stall owner eventually walked over carrying 4 plates of rice and a plate of silver catfish cooked in fermented durian sauce for our table.

“On the house,” he said.

“You don’t have to do that,” I told him.

“You scored for Masraya too many times for me not to.”

That was just Pekan. I never played for them. In fact, I scored against them a lot over the years. But somehow, I never really felt hostility here.

__________

My second season with Klang was different from the first. I was brought to the senior team and started to get minutes here and there.

The senior players treated me differently too after that. More like part of the squad. That was probably how I got dragged into nightlife for the first time.

After an away win in Pekan, a few of the senior players decided to go out instead of returning to the hotel immediately.

“You coming or not?” Shukri, our captain, asked me.

Shukri was not just the captain of Klang in name, he was the real leader of the pack. Someone you feel confident fighting alongside with. Everybody respected him. If Shukri asked you to do something, you usually just did it.

“I don’t even have clothes for this.”

“You can buy a new one,” he said.

I ended up buying new clothes and going out with them.

Klang players were already celebrities in Masraya at that time. So, people recognized us immediately as we entered the club. A few of the Pekan players were there with us too.

Honestly, I was completely lost. I didn't know what to do. I spent most of the night sitting quietly while the senior players ordered more drinks than I thought humanly possible.

That was the first time I saw Astilah. She was across the club with a few friends. Completely different from the rest of the club. Even Rahim noticed me staring.

“Don’t even think about it,” Rahim said immediately.

“I’m not,” I tried to denied it.

“Well, you are,” but Rahim was not buying it.

I just laughed at it before looking away.

"Audioslavia," I sigh.

Danila gives a salute. "Morituri te salutant."

Lina looks up from her phone. "Oh, we're doing that again?"

I nod. "Well, against Audioslavia, we are those who are about to die, no?"

Naira takes a deep breath. "He's not wrong. We have nothing to lose. Well, second place, but that's beside the point. If we manage one point, we have one point more than anybody thinks we'll get. Sure, they haven't conceded a single goal, but hey, there's always a first something. Let's be honest, first place was pretty much out of reach the moment they announced that draw, so..."

I get up and stretch. "Exactly. Second really is first. Because as long as we avoid the playoffs, we're golden. Just imagine making it there in a row. We could--"

Lina sneezes violently. And again. And again.

"I knew that would happen," Danila says.

Lina sniffs. "Say what?"

He gets up and pulls a box of antihistamines from the pocket of his jacket. "Never come to Cathair without those."

"What are--"

We all laugh out loud.

Marat tries to collect himself. "Allergies, Cathair, cat hair, get it?"

Lina puts her face into her hands groans. "Oh, for god's sakes..."

Naira nudges her with her shoulder. "He has to. Contractually obligated. Anybody who comes here for the first time gets this joke. I think that at this point, it's compulsive."

----

We decide to take a walk from the hotel to the stadium. The Beltzarga is... I'm not exactly sure what it is.

Lina cranes her neck upward. "This is a stadium? Looks like, uh..." She scratches her head.

"Like someone had too much sand and coal in Blockhaven and decided to just smelt it all and make... this." Danila refers to the sandbox game he's been obsessed with of late. "Brutalism in glass."

"What happened to beauty and flowing lines? I don't like this. I hope the inside is better." Lina starts walking toward the entrance.

----

The first impression is that it is stunningly beautiful, it really is. The second that this feels more like an art installation than a stadium.

The entrance hall stretches upward in impossible geometric layers of glass, steel, and pale stone. Sunlight pours through the walls at such strange angles that it feels like walking through the inside of a diamond. Every surface gleams. Everything echoes. Somewhere far above us, unseen footsteps clack across suspended walkways. And there are absolutely no signs.

No arrows. No labels. No maps. Just endless pristine hallways branching symmetrically in every direction like the world's most expensive maze.

"Where's the dressing room?" Lina asks quietly.

Naira turns in a slow circle. "Apparently wherever the architect believes your soul should wander."

Danila Terentyev points down one corridor. "That looks important."

The corridor looks identical to all the others. We walk for about three minutes before arriving at a silent luxury restaurant containing exactly one confused bartender polishing glasses. He stares at us. We stare at him.

"...Footballers?" he finally asks.

"We're looking for the dressing rooms."

"You are very far from the dressing rooms."

"Excellent design," Naira mutters.

Back into the labyrinth we go. Every corridor is spotless and minimalist to the point of insanity. Doors sit flush against the walls with no handles visible. Entire staircases seem hidden until you're directly in front of them. Twice we walk in circles and end up back beneath the same gigantic hanging sculpture made of rotating mirrored cubes.

"I think this building is moving," Lina says.

"No," I tell her. "I think the building wants us dead."

Eventually we discover a glowing line embedded into the floor.

Danila Terentyev points dramatically. "Ah! The path."

"The path," I repeat solemnly. "Just - the path where?"

We follow it. The glowing strip leads us down two escalators, through a darkened hallway, around a curved wall - and directly into the home supporters' megastore. A child wearing an Audioslavia shirt points at us and yells something excitedly in a language we have no idea what it is. Maybe Cathairian. Cathartic. Cathirian. Something.

Naira immediately turns around. "No. Absolutely not."

Back out. The stadium continues to feel less designed and more... curated. Like every practical consideration lost a fistfight against an architecture student's thesis project. Still, it is undeniably impressive.

We eventually wander into the VIP section completely by accident. The lounge is absurdly luxurious: marble floors, floating staircases, chairs that look sculpted rather than built. One entire wall overlooks the pitch through polarized smart glass.

Danila Terentyev whistles. "Okay. This part I understand."

Lina carefully lowers herself into one of the chairs. "I think this seat costs more than my apartment."

I walk over to the glass and pull out my phone. "Come on, picture. Nobody back home will believe this place exists."

The others gather near the window overlooking the pitch far below. I raise the phone. Flash. Instantly, the entire glass wall turns pitch black. All of it. The lounge plunges into darkness so suddenly Lina yelps.

"What did you DO?" Naira snaps.

"I took a photo!"

"You assassinated the windows!"

Somewhere nearby we hear a soft electronic voice:

"Sunlight compensation protocol activated."

"There is no sunlight!" Danila Terentyev protests to the ceiling.

The glass slowly fades transparent again over the next fifteen seconds like a dramatic theater reveal.

Naira rubs her temples. "This stadium behaves like it resents human beings."

We finally locate the visiting dressing rooms after following a maintenance worker carrying towels. The room itself is sleek and futuristic, all soft lighting and polished black surfaces. The lockers light up automatically as we approach.

"Oooh," Danila Terentyev says. "Fancy."

My locker flashes my name in Pyazhnayan script. Then English. Then flashes in Edsmon. Then Kwrpan.

Lina blinks. "Why does it know Kwrpanish?"

Before anyone can answer, Terentyev presses something on his locker screen. Every locker in the room immediately locks with a loud metallic CLUNK. Silence.

"...Danila."

"I didn't mean to."

We all tug uselessly at the doors. A loading symbol spins on every screen.

Then a message appears:

"Reconnecting to cloud services."

Naira stares at him with pure murder in her eyes. "You have disabled furniture."

"It's not my fault the lockers need internet access to open!"

A minute later the system reconnects and all the doors unlock simultaneously with cheerful little chimes, as though proud of themselves. The tunnel to the pitch is perhaps the most ridiculous thing yet. It's entirely transparent. Glass walls. Glass ceiling. Afternoon sunlight pours through it in blinding waves, turning the enclosed corridor into a greenhouse. The pitch glows emerald at the far end.

We step inside. Within ten seconds Lina is sweating.

"Why is it hot?"

Naira touches the glass wall. "Because we're being slow-roasted."

"It's for the fan experience," I say, reading a nearby plaque. "'To create emotional transparency between athlete and supporter.'"

Terentyev snorts. "Emotional transparency. We are kebabs."

As we continue down the tunnel, a deep metallic groaning suddenly echoes overhead.

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG."

Lina freezes. "What was that?"

Another groan rolls through the structure, low and haunting, like a dying cargo ship somewhere in the fog.

A stadium worker passing nearby barely reacts. "Roof flexion."

"The roof is doing what?"

"Flexion."

OOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGG.

The sound vibrates through the tunnel walls.

Terentyev looks upward nervously. "Is the building... alive?"

"It's wind passing through the cantilever supports," Naira says.

Another groan bellows across the stadium.

"...I preferred it before you explained it."

We finally emerge pitchside. And to be fair, the view is breathtaking. The Beltzarga opens around us like a colossal crystalline canyon, every stand impossibly steep beneath the glass-and-steel shell. Sunlight fractures through the exterior walls in pale silver beams. The place feels less like a football stadium and more like some futuristic empire's ceremonial arena. For a moment, even the four of us just stare.

Then somewhere high above, another mournful metallic whale-call echoes through the structure.

OOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGGG.

Terentyev nods thoughtfully.

"Haunted."

"Definitely haunted," I agree.

The Baker Park National Team will have reached the historical crossroads portion of this World Cup Qualifying tournament as they face a pair of opponents that represent the genesis of their distant qualifying past and their most recent medal winning success.

Following their defeat in the Finals of the 67th Baptism of Fire, BP entered the qualifying for World Cup 80 as a cannon fodder fixture for more experienced nations within their group; yet a funny thing happened on the way to being just another debut multiverse side that had a decent first cycle.

They went and actually made the 32 team Finals field after finishing runners-up in their group and surviving a two legged playoff against their foe on Matchday 7, Qasden.

It still makes older folks in Qasden hold back tears when the name "Belle Haven" is mentioned in any context, as it was in the first leg of that playoff at Keller Field in the capital that the tie was essentially decided with a Valerie Agahambri strike that gave the Gold & Black a 1-0 victory which gave Park a cushion that they were able to hang onto after a one goal defeat four days later in T.V. City that put the Bees through on the then used away goals rule.

A trip back in time:
https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?p=34041591#p34041591

The seeds for that achievement were sown previous to the start of that cycle when Baker Park entered the DiBradini Cup, advancing to the quarterfinals with an all-male squad but deciding after the event to begin the process of integrating the National Team to a mixed gender format, which they utilized in winning the Under-18 World Cup on their first attempt.

Of course the the DBC is held in Valanora and it was there that more recently the 6th Arrosia Regional Championship took place. BP have not fared nearly as well in this iteration of the regional tournament as they did in the previous AOCAF Cup, but they overcame the fact that they have never performed particularly well in the Eternal Empire at senior level and that they were under the leadership of an interim boss, former NT captain Matt Villarreal to make the semi-final for the first time; although they lost to Sqournshelan Remnant States, the side kept their composure to take the third place match against the hosts, who will be looking for redemption when they visit the BBP National Stadium on Matchday 8.

The Bees sit in third place six points behind the Marauders and will look to parlay this doubleheader into maximum points to cut the gap to both Valanora and second place Sarzonia. Because of the expanded playoff format, their current position isn't particularly dire, but with the midway point of the tournament approaching it is appearing that maintaining home field advantage is crucial, as six of the last ten fixtures will be away from the Commonwealth.

Goal scoring events for Pomachetti:

Maritaine vs Pomachetti Stade des Cimes
Man of the Match: Alexander Le Pons

6th minute - Mambhíní takes the corner short and passes it to Sarcisian. Sarcisian dribbles around the defender that marked him at the corner. He runs onto the edge of the box and spots a chance to shoot. He curls the ball around the goalkeeper with a finessed shot. The ball ends up in the top right corner of the goal.

69th minute - Papiola has the ball and is running at pace after Coisteya halted an attack by Maritaine. Papiola lobs it to the subbed-on Éirpir. with a defender on him, Éirpir passes it to L'Airderlé. L'Aiderlé breaks past the defensive line and slots the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal

Pomachetti vs the Martian Independet Republic Ebheonn Mophto
Man of the match: Seorgís Sarcisian

18th minute - A corner by L'Aiderlé is cleared by Christopher Howell. The ball ends up at the feet of Sarcisian. Sarcisian wallops the ball to the goal, but is blocked. Luckily for him, the ball rebounded to him. He shot once more, and it went in.

57th minute - A foul on Diríbaya results in a penalty. Sarcisian steps up and places the ball on the little white dot. He strolls back, and locks eyes with Ambrose Pritchard. The referee blows his whistle. Sarcisian runs up. Everyone expected to kick with his right foot, but Sarcisian had a trick up his sleeve. Sarcisian attempted a 'fake kick toe poke' penalty. Before shooting with what everyone believed was his kicking foot, he shot with the toes of his other foot. The ball flew into the left side of the goal, but the Martian players were quick to complain about feinting. However, the referee allowed the result of the penalty to stand. The rules state that feinting before the run up is complete is allowed. And technically, what everyone believed was the shooting foot was actually the supporting foot, and the other foot was the shooting foot. Therefore, it was legal.

79th minute - Céot Túobón-Mecoumeori, who has made her first debut for the Pomachettian national team after being subbed-on for Elester Sottíní at just eighteen years old, successfully tackles and dispossesses Rohan Jowling. She clears it up the field. In fact, she wallops it straight to the other end of the field. The ball lands upfield where Eldú Florensí, who has been subbed-on for Déothó L'Aiderlé, runs with pace onto the ball and past the defensive line. With Christopher Howell chasing after him, Florensí decides the best course of action is to pass the ball to his left to Diríbaya. He passes. Diríbaya strikes the ball as soon as his legs could reach the ball.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. In some cases this statement would be true if it weren’t for one crucial fact. It is correct that careful planning and patience is makes revenge more satisfying, but the drive for that execution is the pain, anger and frustration that drives you there. In vengeance, there is always emotion. An example of this is Maritaine. Finalists of the Baptism of Fire. So close to winning. But Pomachetti got there first. Four to two to Pomachetti was the score of the penalty shootout that granted the Pomachettians their first ever multiversal trophy in any sport. Pomachetti was celebrated for their success, but what about Maritaine? They were equally as deserving of the trophy as Pomachetti, yet all they got were some silver medals, a pat on the back and everyone and anyone saying the same old: “Commiserations,” “Tough luck,” “Well done, you were so close!” As a Pomachettian, I can’t help but wonder what it was like. Me and everyone else were drowned in champagne, beer and celebration. Our eardrums popped and our hearts overstimulated. It was the best feeling I’ve ever experienced. The best feeling in the world: pride. I’m sure when the Maritainean players and staff went home, they were treated as heros, champions of the world. And that all the Maritaineans across the multiverse rejoiced with the success of their team. They themselves I am sure felt pride. But there was always that sickening feeling that came with the celebrations. That feeling of failure was certainly still prominent. I know I would be feeling that way after coming so close to winning the whole thing. So there began the story of vengeance. It’s rather poetic, really. I mean, I’m by no means Maritainean but I’m guessing that this is the case. Being two rising stars in multiversal soccer, we would have to face each other once again and many more times. I along with everyone else back at home were just so surprised as to how quick the rematch would happen. Through the immense shouting at the draw, I briefly heard Reginald scream:
“Group 2

Pomachetti
Haltoria
Megistos
Maritaine”
I had no idea what was going on and now I’m completely deaf after that meeting, but I could understand that we would face Maritaine once again. I remember I uncontrollably screamed at the top of my lungs to the Maritaine delegate: “WELL, WELL, WELL, WE MEET AGAIN!” to which the delegate exclaimed: “We have to face those Pomachetti losers again crying cat emoji.”

But here we are weeks later. Maritaine has its revenge against us. A goal in the 90th minute results in our first loss of the qualifiers. The fact that that was our first loss is honestly quite impressive considering were up against the likes of StrayaRoos and Vdara. And even though it's now one to one head-to-head, is it really equal? The final of WCC sanctioned tournament that you’ll only be able to partake in once in your nation’s history is much more important than a mere qualifier group stage match. There is one thing that is for certain: whenever Pomachetti and Maritaine face each other, it sure will be a hell of a game. And I have an ever-strengthening respect for Maritaine, both as competitor and as a country. We’re now rivals.

News at Eight
The Rematch

"Good evening. I'm Íebhe Cielleogh and you're watching TVT Nuecht, bringing you the latest news from Pomachetti, The Western Isles and the Multiverse. Today's largest headline: Maritaine's revenge against Pomachetti. Maritaine have beaten Pomachetti in the Stade des Cimes last night with a three to two win over Na Leoidí i Virdi. Pomachetti recently beat Maritaine in the Baptism of Fire final on penalties. And since, the draw for the World Cup qualifiers, everyone was discussing how the two finalists will face eachother two more times to find out who goes to the World Cup proper. All of the two rivals' matches in the qualifiers have been exceptionally close, and the match today was definitely the closest yet. The two teams scored two goals each, but a goal in the second minute of added time secured a tight victory. Our Sports Analyst Sienén Cellen is here with us to discuss this result. Now tell me Sienén, what does this loss do to Pomachetti?"
"Well, thank you Íebhe for having me. I think that this loss has set up a great rivalry between the two teams. Its the first match Pomachetti has played against a team they have already played against, and its a high stakes match. Obviously, one with higher stakes then the others. I don't believe that this will have much of a bearing on the future of the qualifiers since there's so many matches remaining in the group stage. I'd say if anything everyones more excited to have their first major rivalry."
"And how's it shaping up in the group stages?"
"Pomachetti currently sit fourth with eight points. Vdara are sitting atop with twelve points. StrayaRoos second with eleven points. And Aleirave are third with ten points. It's just so tight at the top. Tomorrow we face the Martian Independent Republic in Mophto, and after that we have Aleirave. That match against Aleirave will be crucial even thought were still so early into the season because only the top three are in with a shout of qualification."
"And you can watch that match against Aleirave and the rest of Pomachetti's matches in the World Cup qualifiers on TVT Spúort. Sienén, thank you for sharing your wisodm."
"It's my job. Thank you."

OOC: Please enjoy more random writing as I recharge my sports RPing batteries. I'm not sure if this story will be continued.

Hsrada brushed papers off his desk. That had gone horribly. Immensely horribly. Divad, his vice president and consultant, opened the office door and strolled in. He hadn’t been present at the meeting and so he hadn’t witnessed the events that had gone down. He quickly inferred after he saw his friend’s face. “Not the best meeting, I see?” he asked.

“Far from it. We’re going to have to find a different manufacturing company. But it’s fine. This would have broken down anyway.” Hsrada had personally been working to establish a deal between his company and Prime Manufacturing, but it had all come to nothing. “Divad, I’m going to delegate deals to you. The risk of me seeming like I think I’m better than other executives is far outweighed by your skill with people.” Truth be told, Divad had expected this. He was the face of the company, even if Hsrada was the owner. He could just talk, and people listened and agreed.

“Alright, boss. I’ll get to work scouting some potential partners and contacting them.”

“Thanks a lot, Divad.”

*****

Hsrada brushed papers off his desk, but this time he did it excitedly. Appointing Divad as his representative in deals had proved to be the right decision. ALPHA Manufacturing would be the new producer of LessTires, and for a lot smaller fee than Hsrada had expected. He was still a little apprehensive, though, about the tone this would set for future negotiations.

It had long been known inside the company that Divad was trying to pursue a subsidization of the company. Hsrada had always been opposed to this; his company was what had supported him, and he wanted to keep it. Although selling the rights would bring in massive money for everyone involved, Hsrada just couldn’t do it. At first it had been easy to convince everybody that selling was the wrong idea. There was no guarantee of continued employment after the takeover. Only a few days earlier, however, TireGear, the company’s main rival, had offered to buy them. The sum was enormous, and almost all of the employees were guaranteed to keep their jobs. Even Hsrada would. But he would be under their control.

Pressure had been mounting on Hrsada for a decision for days. Getting a manufacturing deal had increased the support for his side, but there were still mumbles. He didn’t think it would spiral out of control, but as any company executive constantly does, he worried. In the end, however, he decided that Divad would continue his job as company representative.

Hrsada walked down the steps of his office. Located in the city center of Tammen, it was merely a 30-minute drive to his house. As he walked to his car, Divad called out to him. “Hsrada, come here!” Hrsada wasn’t in an especially hurried walk, but did want to get home. Nonetheless, Divad usually didn’t yell to him if it wasn’t important, so he reluctantly went over.

When he had crossed the parking lot, Divad was leaning against his blue 2021 Ayyelo Stingray. Hrsada was a car enthusiast, so he could identify Divad’s car quicker than Divad could.

“Get in, Hrsada. We have somewhere to go.” Hrsada didn’t question this and got in without comment. It helped that he was getting into an Ayyelo. Hsrada’s own car was an Phisilon 200 4C, built for comfort rather than speed. An Ayyelo could beat it in a race any day.

They cruised down Melrose Avenue, past the giant houses. Hrsada had been informed during the drive that ALPHA Manufacturing had wanted to iron out the details of the agreement, and they were going to meet the president. They turned the corner, and Hrsada’s heart stopped.

The gunshots rang out from a lone shooter, standing in the middle of the road. The windshield shattered into a million pieces, and glass rained inside the cabin. The car shrieked to a stop. Hrsada shoved the door open and dived behind the open door. Divad’s Ayyelo had special reinforced, bulletproof steel inlaid in the doors. Shots hit the side and ricocheted off. Hrsada hoped Divad had done the same on the other side, and clangs coming opposite of him told him he was probably right. Hrsada started inching back around the car. He saw Divad crouching behind the driver side door.

“We break away on three, OK?” Hrsada whispered. “One, two, three!” They dashed to a rock placed in the lawn of a house near the road. The shooter saw them, and then the rock too was blown apart. They were forced to run around the house. The backyard opened into a park, and Hrsada and Divad ran between the trees and up through the stony paths. Feet pounded the path behind them, and poorly placed shots hit trees and tore through bushes.
Hrsada rounded a corner, and judged it was safe to take a breath. Who was after him and Divad? Who wanted them killed? Divad came into the clearing a second after Hrsada. Hrsada turned to continue running, and then the world went black.

*****

Hrsada thrashed about in his chair. He was tied to it, which was inconvenient, but that would end soon. He eased up his hands (tied to the back of the chair) and reached into his back pants pocket. He took out a mini razor, and deftly cut the rope. It fell to the ground around him. He certainly wasn’t a spy, but the multitude of pockets that resided in his regular suit provided nice places to hide small things that could come in handy. He stood up, and from the slight aching in his legs he could tell he had been tied for several hours. After he stood up, he got a better view of the room he was being held captive in. Bright, florescent lights hung from the ceiling, illuminating a room probably 10 feet by 12. Well, illuminating was a strong word. It was more like the barb of an anglerfish in the depths of the ocean. He could just make out the far walls. Upon further inspection the room seemed to be bare. Hrsada turned around and caught his breath.

“Divad!” he cried. Divad was in a similar situation as Hrsada had been a few minutes earlier. Hrsada quickly used his mini razor to cut Divad loose. The falling ropes stirred Hrsada’s old friend, and he slowly came to.

Hrsada gave Divad time to wake up. He went to each of the corners and walls, finding a door on the last one. Not that it was unlocked, but that wasn’t a problem for Hrsada. He started scraping at the hinges, cutting down the rusted layers. He finished with the first on and went to work on the second.
He had almost finished the third one when Divad walked over.

“What are you doing, Hsrada?”

“Getting us out of here.”

Previously on WC101, KP wrote:Much would hinge on the campaign, and in particular how much each leader would be able to control the narrative. After all, this election was explicitly called by Mulholland-Pearce and her allies on the assumption that they could repeat the "only a Workers'-led government will prevent a second Isolation" narrative one more time...

Inside a dark room somewhere in Zube, Workers' Party officials were plotting their opposition research seeking to find the elusive bit of mud that might stick to the candidates standing between them and another term in office for the Mulholland-Pearce administration.

All manner of NUP candidate cica.da feeds were perused - the ones that hadn't been scrubbed at least. Quite a few had.

"Should we make that the angle we push?" argued one of the multiple middle-aged nerds in the room. "That they must know they have something to hide and are hiding it?"

"It's hard to make that stick, I think," replied another. "It would just betray that we didn't find anything and that might just help them more than the secrecy angle helps us."

"Maybe we should focus more of our attention on (the far-right anti-RPD) Party of No candidates? We all know the NUP might need them to govern and that's our best way to tie them down and go, see, an (NUP leader Edward) Eidinow government would threaten our sports teams because they'd rely on this lot?"

"Finding scandals for that lot is too easy and also pointless. Everyone knows who they are. And they'll take list seats off the NUP anyway so we actually don't want to weaken them too much."

At that moment, a third nerd came over. "Er, looks like I found something with PKP defense spokesman Nelson Moffatt. From a comment he made when he was running as an NUP paper candidate in (Zube inner suburban seat) Blatten and Cupar in the Isolation era."

The ears of the other two pricked at this. Moffatt was known for being one of the more eyecatching defections from the NUP to the PKP at the time, after all.

"He said, and I quote, 'this country has cleaned up its act so much in the years since the scourge of RPDs was cleansed after the disastrous Olympics...'"

(Those would be the "disastrous" Olympics that set a new precedent for co-hosting, bought unprecedented attention to the Kytlerian nation, saw the medals table topped by the hosts, and were marred mostly by international acts of terror of which one was literally committed by a competitor during the event.)

"Wait, the PKP have literally got a Nolympian on their front bench?"

"They've literally got a Nolympian on their front bench."

And with that, multiple tabs on at least one screen in that room were diverted from cica.da weaponised doomscrolling to the graphic design software that would be used to knock up campaign material...

the son

Postby Drawkland » Sun May 10, 2026 11:42 am

“For the intents and purposes of standard infant safety, you must treat the baby the same as you would a mortal. While the body has already developed its capacity to survive and heal, a serious injury can have difficult consequences. Due to the comparatively rapid growth of early childhood, healing growth could result in asymmetry and other side effects. The psychological effects of sustaining heavy injury at that age cannot be overstated either.” Jack Hoy read a passage aloud from the book in his hand.

“Hm.” Leo Cross grunted. He’d arrived at Jack’s Metropolon apartment a few minutes prior. It was maybe the second or third time he’d met Jack’s baby, and certainly the first time he’d seen it without Sarah Arrowsword being close by.

“What do you mean, ‘hm’?” Jack questioned immediately. He knew Leo was a man of fewer words, but that was an unusually short response.

“I mean no offense here,” Leo relented after a moment’s hesitation. “I’m afraid they’ve given you the manual for morons.”

“Yeah, right.”

“Seriously. That’s so self-explanatory that I’m surprised they spent the time to write it out in the first place.”

“Okay, well, duh!” Jack scoffed. “Obviously I’m not gonna leave the kid unattended or free roaming. Besides, I think it’s cool info. This isn’t exactly common knowledge.”

“Fair enough.” Leo leaned over, looking into the pentagonal enclosure on Jack’s living room floor. “I think expecting the baby to roam anywhere is a little optimistic, though. The most I’ve seen him move is rolling around and maybe sitting up.”

“Nah, the kid’s wicked smart. Check this out.” Jack hopped closer to the enclosure, reaching over to grab a small plush gridiron football from the floor. He handed the ‘ball’ to Leo. “Here, snap me the ball.”

“What?” Leo held the plush in his hands with the bewilderment evident in his face.

“I’ll take it from under center, then.” Jack put his hands on Leo’s waist and twisted him around to face his backside.

“O-kay …”

“Down, set … hike!” Jack barked suddenly, clapping his hands together behind Leo’s legs.

Leo hesitated, then slowly stretched the ball between his legs. Jack grabbed it instantly, spinning and crouching at the same time so he was level with the top of the enclosure. He extended the plush football with a straight arm like a quarterback, holding it right in front of the baby.

The baby grabbed the ball, or more accurately lightly clamped it between his sausage-like arms and giggled.

“See? Look at that, he’s a natural.” Jack was grinning ear to ear, arm outstretched to demand Leo behold his son.

“Wow. Impressive. And look,” Leo pointed as the ball flopped away from the baby’s grasp and rolled back onto the floor, “he almost held onto it for three seconds.”

“We can teach ball security later,” Jack raised a finger defiantly. “He just doesn’t have the grippers yet. But come on, that was a picture-perfect handoff. By the time he’s walking he’ll know the difference between the A-gap and B-gap.”

“You’re worse than travelball parents.”

“I don’t have that much time with him,” Jack lamented. “I have to stuff all the good football propaganda I can into our time together. Divine know his mom surrounds him with soccer stuff at home.”

“Does she, though?” Leo asked earnestly. “I’m not really sure what sort of mother Sarah is, but she doesn’t seem to be the type to push her child into something. I thought that her dad doing that to her is partially what caused her daddy issues.”

“Sarah has daddy issues?” Jack replied, confusion evident on his face.

“I thought it was obvious.”

“Says who?”

“She started hanging out with you, for one.” Leo shrugged, trying to keep himself from grinning. “For two, you’d be surprised what you can learn about people when you actually listen to them talk.”

“I feel like she would’ve told me about that at some point.” Jack narrowed his eyes. “And I’ll ignore that other comment for now.”

“Regardless, I don’t think you need to push the kid into football that hard. Again, he can’t even stand on his own right now.”

“The manual says I should be providing enrichment for him, so that his brain develops and stuff. This is enriching! Isn’t it, Gideon?” Jack turned back to the baby, projecting his voice a little more for that last sentence.

“Bwa-hooo,” Gideon responded with a coo, then broke into a fit of giggles.

“See? He gets it.” Jack folded his arms and nodded in satisfaction. “Like I said earlier. I bet his first words are gonna be ‘HB Dive.’”

“I’ll believe that when I see it.” Leo rolled his eyes.

Leo couldn’t help but feel happy for Jack, though. Even though these circumstances were less than ideal, it still felt like a bit of a natural fit. Jack was definitely immature, but a lot of that came from the childlike enthusiasm that he held even through dire straits. If Jack could go without making any stupid mistakes, he was probably going to be a great dad. Perhaps it would even wise him up a little bit.

“Some of this stuff is really crazy,” Jack said. He’d resumed flipping through some of the pages in the manual he’d been holding earlier. “They’ve got, like, magic training and stuff. Dude, what if he ends up being a wizard? Wouldn’t that be wild?”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine. Isn’t that stuff hereditary? Neither you nor Sarah have a single magical bone in your bodies.”

“Unless you count making magic on a football field. Then we’re basically grandmasters.”

“Probably for the best,” Leo nodded. “If the child of you two was able to shoot fire out of his hands, he’d probably burn down half the country as a flex.”

Woodward Brace Buries Banijans

ISTRIA, BANIJA - The All Greens, just weeks after their disapointing draw against New Eastern Canada, have bounced back in tremendous style by defeating first placed Banija 2-1. It was the same scoreline the two teams had played to in their most recent match, a post World Cup 99 friendly also played in Banija and appears to indicate that the All Greens may possibly be the more in form team between the two.

Darmen played with a calmness and poise that was absent in their match against New Eastern Canada. It was the Banijans this time who seemed to be out of sorts, both on the pitch and off it. Both offensively and defensively, the Banijans lacked the sharpness that has been so prevelant in their play over the past few years. Darmeni net minder Morris Mathews had a relatively quite night, allowing only one goal against just five shots on goal, while a further 17 Banijan shots failed to trouble Mathews. Darmen's first choice defenders put on a display that the team's reserves would do well to take note of, denying the Banijans access to dangerous areas within the 18 yard box and limiting the Kadongo Kamu to poor quality shot opportunities.

In attack, Walter Goddard put his speed and athleticism to good use, consistenly getting past the Banijan defense down the flank and peppering the center of the field in front of Biran Jarju with dozens of crosses. Jarju dealt with most of them, but once in the first half and again in the second half, Goddard's crosses connected with the head or boot of Torger Woodward and slammed into the back of the net.

The victory sees Darmen rise from sixth to third in Group 15. While the All Greens remain four points behind Banija for an automatic qualification, being in a position to reach the playoffs will help to take off some of the pressure and allow the team to play with the same freedom they did in Istria. Darmeni co-manager Tor Tong Lee is looking ahead with optomism, "If we continue playing like we did tonight for the rest of qualifiers, I see no reason why we can not only reach another World Cup finals, but even make a deep run in it." Lee, normally a fairly reserved man, also took the opportunity after the match to throw some shade at his Banijan counterpart, noting that "I've never had a substitute say no to me."

Dop Wop (Let's See)

produced by ReemSports

"Once again, the clouds are gathering to release what they held in."

Wow. This World Cup has not gone the way we intended to go in. Our Redemption 101 journey, which was started with lots of joy and celebration around the Natkrian footballing community and fans around Timoria, has hit a roadblock in the way of qualification for World Cup 101. This time, however, it's a lot worse than previous qualification journeys for Natkr. After the final day of heartbreak against the Manuelian Empire in which prevented the Natkrian national team from qualifying for the tournament, Coach Sigmund Reynolds (coming from a firing from his home country, The Golden Harp's national team) was brought in by the committee in order to bring change towards a new style of play for the national team. It seemed to work at first, with the Independent Associations Championship and the Cup of Harmony being examples of his tactics. The team tends to begin their journeys quite well, and then when it comes to the knockouts, it all falls apart when they reach the knockout stages. But for this World Cup, it tended to be a lot different, but in a bad way.

The opening matches of the World Cup 101 qualification campaign for Natkr have definitely not gone the way we wanted it too. These matches have followed the inconsistency that the national team had with Kyes Weah, but unfortunately hasn't done much to change with Sigmund Reynolds. With only two wins in Group 5 and four depressing defeats, Natkr currently sits in seventh place under Skorpiie, which is very disappointing for the team. That's a position that Natkr hasn't been used to in a while, especially not in football. Maybe for other sports, though. This is like a betrayal of the trust shown together in the squad, and it's making the captain, David Lopez himself sad as he tries to make his last possible World Cup, as he is retiring from international duty right after the end of this World Cup/Cup of Harmony run.

Hamborn - Sel Appa, a match to keep the 5th place !

"Welcome to Lavandeum for this match opposing Hamborn to Sel Appa!"

"We may remember that their 6th with 3 points behind Hamborn a win to distance Sel Appa is needed, and the winner could have the 5th place !"

"We seen a team that just finished a 3 wins streak against Bhumi Matawis Empire, that could be in favor of Sel Appa."

"We also remember that Leo Surli is injured and Neo Kisté have a red card !"

"Then the coach showed is squad, the same just Micheal Julio in goal for the next 4 matches and Noan Levon replacing Neo Kisté !"

"Good luck to Hamborn !"

Eastfield Lodge - Hamborn

"Welcome to Tavernia Stadium, in Eastfield Lodge !"

"This is a match with the comeback of Neo Kisté finishing is suspension."

"A team that is 8th, it's an indicator of the team is easy ?"

"Yes, it's easy because 8th with 5 points its 1 win and 2 draw, meaning 3 loses."

"In the statistics but in reality its different !" Respinded an Eastfield Lodge's supporter.

"Then goodluck to the two teams and good matchs to every others in the group !"

RSFF Centennial Player Showcase

The RSFF 100th Anniversary Game is rapidly approaching, and festivities are already in full swing across the country. Solgavden is a football mad country, and with the sport having such a large impact on the Solgavish national identity, it makes sense that many look to commemorate a century of the organized game in the Kingdom. Charity matches are being held in fields and parks across the nation, with reenactors working relentlessly to play as accurately to the 1926 game as possible. While the on field product isn’t exactly…exciting compared to a high-powered modern Kongensliga match, these events have led some to speculate about exactly what football was like in Solgavden so long ago, and what were the big-names of the time. So, in conjunction with the historians at the Solgavish Sports Hall of Fame, we here at the RSFF would like to introduce a showcase of the few of the most passionate, most influential, most successful, and most sensational Solgavish players from the past 100 years (or P.I.S.S., as we like to call it). It is often ill-advised to compare players from vastly different eras, but we're gonna do it anyway, by introducing the P.I.S.S. Rating System, which analyses each of the previously mentioned values, on a 1-to-10 scale.
  • Passion: This measures the amount of passion, or lack thereof, that a player might've had for the game. Longer careers, dedication, and personal sacrifice will result in higher scores.
  • Influence: This rates the impact the player has had on the Solgavish game overall. This highlights those that have pioneered new tactics, or those that have left a lasting impression on future generations.
  • Success: Simply put, this tracks how much the player has won in their career, through team or personal achievements. This is where we take into accounts, league titles, Cup wins, MVPs, and other awards.
  • Sensation: Unlike influence, which measures a player's legacy, sensation takes a look into a player's popularity within their career. This stat is for the household names, those who made kids beg mom and dad to buy their jersey, and those who took the country by storm.

We start, of course, where it all began, in the 1920s through the 1950s, when football in Solgavden was still relatively new, and positions were a lot less defined. In the wild and unorganized era of Solgavish football, the Kongensliga was in its infancy, and was putting down its roots as the future juggernaut we know today.

Solgavden’s P.I.S.S Players of the Past 100 Years: 1920s - 1930s

Presented by Thomas Gulbrandsan III, senior football writer at The Roslund Chronicle & football historian for the RSFF

  • Leon Wymann
    Position: Center halfback
    Club(s): Olympisk Kolvereid
    Years Active: 1919-1922, 1925-1934
Major Accolades: 2x Kongensliga Titles, 1x Unity Cup (now known as King Halfdan IV Cup), 1x Kongensliga Golden Boot
    P.I.S.S Score: [Pas: 8] [Inf: 9] [Suc: 9] [Sen: 8]
Leon Wymann is one of the early stars of the Solgavish game, and is a figure that has inspired countless players to emulate his style of play in the decades to come. Wymann was born into Lysborg's wealthy elite, and like most young men of his stature, had no problem joining the Olympisk Social og Athletyck Klub (an institution now known as Olympisk Kolvereid). Upon joining their ranks, Wymann took a liking to football, a game that was taking the entire city by storm. Wymann spent his early life focusing on other athletic pursuits such as rowing and wrestling, making him what we would consider a “freak athlete”, and he was able to seamlessly fit in with his teammates. Wymann was most known for his almost complete versatility. He preferred to stay in the center of the pitch (although he was known to play as a forward or a fullback on occasion), and he had the ability to be deadly both on the attack and on defense. He regularly led Olympisk in goals, and effectively created counter-attacks by heavily pressing the opposing forwards. After going on a three year hiatus to fight in the Solgavish Civil War (which is a common theme among players of his generation), Wymann picked up where he left off, winning two early Kongensliga titles, as well as the first Unity Cup, beating some of the era's best clubs along the way. Wymann was the lone Olympisk goalscorer in the first ever Kongensliga game, which ended as a 2-1 defeat to growing rivals Rega Lysborg

  • Gabriel Lier
    Position: Goalkeeper
    Club(s): Abelvorden Striders
    Years Active: 1931-1943
Major Accolades: 3x Unity Cup (now known as King Halfdan IV Cup)
    P.I.S.S Score: [Pas: 8] [Inf: 7] [Suc: 8] [Sen: 7]
In the age before the flashy acrobatic goalkeepers that can seem to go from post-to-post in the blink of an eye, there were men like Gabriel Lier, who had to do with what they had. Also working at the dockyards along the Elharad River, Lier can best be described as "hard-working", followed immediately with "gritty". Lier wasn't afraid to get up close and personal with his opponents, even starting a few brawls between both teams, despite his position keeping him away from the action by design. Although he was known for his aggressiveness, Lier was a very methodical keeper, mastering elite ball distribution and positioning years before such training would be formalized for future keepers. Lier also had a powerful leg, which he used to rocket the ball up the field and lead to a quick counter attack. One such instance had the ball travel far enough to leave the opposing goalie unprepared, leading to the first ever Kongensliga goal scored by a goalkeeper.

  • Louis Haspel
    Position: Center forward
    Club(s): Viktoria Orliss SK
    Years Active: 1927-1932
Major Accolades: 1x Kongensliga Title, 4x Kongensliga Golden Boots
    P.I.S.S Score: [Pas: 4] [Inf: 8] [Suc: 10] [Sen: 10]
It is said that the brightest stars burn the fastest, and no player better embodied this phrase than Louis Haspel, who played in only five seasons, yet took the country by storm. Haspel was a banker by trade, and only decided to pursue football when his wife convinced him of the potential extra income he could earn. He was unremarkable during the first two tryouts with local club Viktoria, yet after personally pleading his case with the manager at the time, he finally joined the club in 1927.
Haspel seemed pretty meek at first glance, standing at 5'6" and weighing about 140 lbs. soaking wet, yet he was smart, and was soon able to dissect opposing defenses like a hot knife through butter. What started as a drip soon turned into a wave, as Haspel finished his first full season with 5 more goals than the second and third ranked players...combined. Suffice to say, his fame soon stretched beyond the borders of Orliss, and he became a national sensation, with multiple teams scheduling friendlies just for the chance to play against him. Yet the life of the 1920s equivalent of a rockstar wasn't for him, and he longed to return to his boring desk job with his loving wife by his side (what a dork!). While Haspel continued to score left and right, Viktoria Orliss SK was having problems off the pitch, as rival factions began to rise within the club: one from Walsbruck District, and the other from Lunaris District. In 1932, the rift between these two sides were too great, and each faction broke off to form their own separate clubs, Walsbruck FK and Kosmopolitisk Lunaris respectively, leaving Viktoria as a former shell of itself. Haspel, who was from neither Walsbruck or Lunaris, saw this as the perfect chance to declare his retirement, leaving behind Kongensliga goals record that took almost 30 years to break.

Solgavden’s P.I.S.S Players of the Past 100 Years: 1940s - 1950s

Presented by Laurin Allebrand, President of the RSFF's Board of Governors, and lover of all things football

  • David Edwards
    Position: Fullback
    Club(s): Honningberg IFK, Olympisk Kolvereid
    Years Active: 1948-1961
Major Accolades: 1x Kongensliga Title, 1x King Halfdan IV Cup, 1x MVP Award
    P.I.S.S Score: [Pas: 8] [Inf: 10] [Suc: 7] [Sen: 9]
What David Edwards is most remembered for today is being the first black player to play in the Kongensliga, paving the way for future generations of minorities across all sectors of society. Solgavden was, and still is, a progressive country compared to its contemporaries, yet this didn't stop Edwards from facing discrimination on his journey to professional football. He was one of the most fouled players in the league when he played, being a common misconception at the time that he could 'take' the extra physicality. Yet despite his adversity, Edwards pressed on to be one of the Kongensliga's best defenders in his own right, earning the MVP Award for his efforts during the 1953-54 by a unanimous vote, the first player to do so. Edwards had a background in coaching youth sports, which made him a natural leader in the locker room. This leadership translated onto the field, where he was able to direct his teammates like he was directing traffic, which earned him the nickname of "The Conductor". Towards the last few years of his playing career, he made the move to Olympic Kolvereid, where he instantly made an impact on the field by contributing to a King Halfdan IV Cup victory, and followed that by making it to the Cup Final the next year. After retirement, Edwards briefly became Olympisk's manager, becoming the first black person to manage a Kongensliga team as well.

  • August Saltzman
    Position: Forward
    Club(s): Rega Lysborg
    Years Active: 1939-1957
Major Accolades: 6x Kongensliga Titles, 3x King Halfdan IV Cups, 5x MVP Award, 4x Kongensliga Golden Boot
    P.I.S.S Score: [Pas: 7] [Inf: 9] [Suc: 10] [Sen: 9]
August Saltzman was one of the first "wonderkids" that the Kongensliga has seen, being an exhilarating player to watch for St. Octavia University. When he was old enough to sign a professional contract, Rega Lysborg was the obvious choice, since they had the funds and talent available to make him a success. Saltzman proceeded to deliver and then some, being a dynamic forward that had a shot that was impossible to stop. With Saltzman at the helm, Rega Lysborg finally took the leap into becoming Solgavden's most successful team, overshadowing the previous holder of that distinction, Olympisk Kolvereid. Rega won a whopping six league titles during Saltzman's career, and picked up another three KH4 Cups along the way. Saltzman was also a five time MVP, and four time Golden Boot winner, making it understandable to see how he has been the blueprint for Solgavish strikers in the decades since his retirement. His legacy also includes a newly minted Kongensliga goals record, surpassing Louis Haspel with only a few games left in his career.

  • Paul "Lefty" Vestergaard
    Position: Fullback, Central Midfielder
Club(s): Wittenheim Athletyck, Egerheim Kyst, Roslund Mirakaler
    Years Active: 1944-1966
Major Accolades: 2x Kongensliga Titles, 1x King Halfdan IV Cup, 1x MVP Award
    P.I.S.S Score: [Pas: 10] [Inf: 7] [Suc: 8] [Sen: 8]
There are a a lot of conflicting theories about how Paul "Lefty" Vestergaard got his famous nickname, whether it was because of his left-footed shot...or maybe his right-footed shot despite being left-handed. Maybe it was the time he showed up to practice accidentally wearing two left shoes, or was it his tendency to warm up on the left side of the pitch? Whatever the origin of his nickname may be (and no, we here at the RSFF aren't entirely sure either), Lefty's impact on the game has been unforgettable. Hailing from Roslund, Lefty made his debut for Wittenheim Athletyck, where he soon made his dedication to the game known. Lefty grew a reputation as a hardworking, team-first player, one who tried his hardest on the pitch no matter how large or small the game was. Lefty played in over 650 Kongensliga matches, and set a mind-boggling Ironman streak by appearing in 483 games consecutively, a record that's still unbroken today. After transferring to Egerheim Kyst, Lefty won his first league title with the underdog team, surmounting league giants like Olympisk Kolvereid, Abelvorden Striders, and Rega Lysborg. He won his second league title with his childhood club Roslund Mirakaler, and after his retirement he remained active in the community, living to see Roslund win the title again in 2008-09.

...it means, the green colour that is from Hmala. "Whatever that means, you don't understand yet.

The Code of Poeleo

So, you've come to agree that most of these tiles are easy enough to identify, and that the colour of the special tiles is to do with their tribe alignment; but you've yet to really learn how to play, or what the magic tiles mean (beyond that your guide tells you they are "magic"). Going in you'd not expected the game to be anything to do with the occult. Before long, while the men at the table continue to click tiles together, your guide finds a coaster and hands it to you. As much as it would have seemed confusing to you originally, it speaks to you clearly.

"To keep" says the man, "for later." You're not looking forward to playing a game whose rules appear to function more like a star-chart than a game, but the actions the men are taking are simple enough. "The magic, it is the fruit on a tree, you see." You don't see. Your guide notices. "Ah, wait. Look." Once again, your guide intrudes on the ongoing game; grabbing a few tiles from the table. The man who had apparently collected the tiles was a little hesitant, but didn't object more than with a few grumbles. The tiles are clear to you now: it's a 3, a 4, a 5 and a 6 of blue Jurti tiles. "To win, you need to make set," you hear, "and it is a set, here. Street: three, four, five, six. Or we say Chary". That seems reasonable. You've played Rummy before. "Also is a set when 3, 3, 3, 3... different colors! We call it Big Turn, Hiver." You recognize this, but you've spotted there's multiple of each type of tile in the game. Boldly, you ask "What if there's four of the same tile?" Your guide laughs, as do the men playing at the table, who are overhearing your conversation. "Quick learner!" says one of them. "Yes, is called Collection, Syncu. Simple no?" You understand. Each turn, the men take a tile from the big piles in the middle, then choose to discard it, or keep it and discard another. Occassionally, one of them will take a tile from another, and sometimes, one will reveal some tiles from their rack. The sets are clear now, but why is the magic like fruit on a tree? You're far from done here.

Marsonne 0 - 0 Airannia
No goals

Airannia 1 - 1 Dhemixia
35': Sam Allbhy 1-0
75': Grant Clarke 1-1

In a game of Poeleo, if no player wins a game before the draw pile runs out, no player wins, no player gains or loses any points, and the game does not progress; it is as if the game was never played. In the game of football, this isn't true - a single point is granted to each team, and the games progress onward, dropping a team like Airannia two spots from the number 1 position in the qualifying group's table despite not even losing. But, just as the older men in the café shrug it off and continue if nobody managed to win a round, drawing the game against Marsonne away was, by all means, a blessing; the Centaurs had been on an absolute heater, beating top seed Juvencus at home earlier in the schedule. And just unlike Poeleo, where you could be stuck needing just one tile to make it to the end, you could lose it all in a moment's notice, and reach a drawn position - such as against Dhemixia in the Centerby stadium. Sam Allbhy had set the tone for the match, but the blue-and-yellows were keeping up the pressure in such a way that the Airannians needed one more Chary, one more Syncu in order to consider the game won... and it never came. Instead, the Dhemixians managed to fully lock up the game with a creative attack, leading to a corner kick or two, finally ending up with a header by Clarke - and once that hit, the game died down. Unlike before, though, the atmosphere was still great: that's just how Vorácy crowds roll, really.

FIRST THREE POINTS ON COUNT AND DRAW ?!

After four matches without a win, our selection finally registered a victory and the first three points in these qualifications. In the city of Kula, at the Golden Eye stadium, our team hosted Olastor. Our team started very powerfully and very offensively. Team Olastor defended from the beginning to the end and there was not too much opportunity for them to get a positive outcome of the match.
Davida Zimmer scored the first goal for our team in the 38th minute of the match.
That score stood after the first half. Then Li Peng scored 2-0 with a great shot from a distance of 21 meters in the 51st minute. It was a cannon-like, indefensible shot into the left corner of the goal.
After our players attacked the Olastor goal, Matković shot but the Olastor goalkeeper deflected the ball into a corner with his fingertips. Tavano takes a corner, a great and sharp ball lands in front of the Olastor goal and Tomljanović scores with a header for a 3-0 lead. The game lasted 58 minutes and our team had a convincing lead. Despite the attacks, we failed to score another goal.

Kula is a city that is developing very quickly. The discovery of large quantities of natural gas gave the city a big boost in development. Furthermore, the metal industry as well as the chemical industry keep this city in a high fifth place in our country when it comes to GDP per capita. Kula have 2.540,000 inhabitants.
Despite the accelerated industrial development and construction of the city, the city has major problems with transportation.
The new city bus has not yet been completed and the roads are congested. Parts of the city literally stand still during rush hour. City leaders are struggling to solve the traffic problem.
When it comes to the city center, traffic is limited there only for buses, trams, delivery vehicles, police and emergency services vehicles. Around the center itself, there are more than 36 underground garages for tenants and guests in the center.
The city offers a lot of different contents, museums, galleries, restaurants and night clubs.

KELSSEK VS SREDNJACI 3-3

On the wings of a great home win against Olastor, our team went on a away trip to Kelssek, very tough opponent.
Our players arrived at Neorvins, Stadium of the Workers, in front of 57,558 spectators looking for a win. Both teams played a great game and the spectators could see six goals in the game.
Matković scored a goal in the 60' to give our team a 1-0 lead. The celebration lasted 6 minutes when Niemi equalized. The same player scored for the home team a 2-1 lead in the 72' minute, but in the very next attack Tavano scored to tie the game at 2-2!
Instead of Mrzljak, Ivana Žimić entered the game and in the first touch of the ball in the 75' minute scored a goal to give our team a 3-2 lead. Kelssek players pressed in order to equalize. They succeeded in doing so in the 89' through Mao. Mao was also a player from the bench who saved a point for the home team with a fantastic goal.

With 5 points we are in the bottom half of the table. We hope to continue playing better and reach a better position.

MEGISTIANS WEATHER THE STORM
By Aris Thorne, Lead Megistian Sports Correspondent

"We knew what we were getting into," says Yannis, a 42-year-old data analyst who also doubles as a Megistian ultra, wiping a smear of red face paint from his cheek. He takes a long sip of his bitter ale. "The fact that I can sit here, at the bottom of a pub on a rainy cold Sunday night, and watch my country compete? The scoreline doesn't matter."

It is a sentiment shared across the empire's fans this morning. The Dolphins endured thorugh another painful week on the pitch, dropping a heartbreaking 4-3 game away to Aleirave before returning to the Paix Grand Silo only to the team's high press to be dismantled and ripped apart 4-0 by a relentless and strong StrayaRoos squad. The back-to-back defeats have sent Megistos tumbling down the order to ninth place in Group 2, where many experts expected the team to end up.

"The 4-3 against Aleirave, that was real football," says Demetria, who manages a crowded sports bar and professional coper in the Olympos Sector. Her establishment was packed to capacity for the away fixture, with patrons standing shoulder-to-shoulder, clothes hidden beneath bright Megistian matchday scarves. "We fought. We scored three goals away from home against a top-tier side. They didn't roll over."

When asked about the heavy 4-0 home defeat that followed, the crowd’s pragmatism shone through. The physical toll of the 4-2-3-1 high press had clearly broken the squad's legs, forcing Manager Kosta Varon into heavy rotation against a game that was very unlikely to be anything but a loss.

"Look, the Roos are fast. Unbelievably fast," Yannis, who was a little tipsy, added, gesturing toward the replay playing silently on the bar's muted television, for the crowd was a little too silent to bear. "And Octavius is doing his best in goal. You try coordinating eight arms when the midfield collapses in front of you. He saved us from it being six or seven or even eight."

"My shift supervisor actually let us stream the Aleirave match during our lunch hour," notes a younger fan, still wearing her ID lanyard. "Nobody is under any idea or delusion that we’re going to actually win the World Cup. But when Vellas scored our third goal, the whole floor cheered. That hasn't happened in a decade or ever."

The Dolphins face a monumental task in the coming weeks to climb back up the table. But if the view in the pubs and the viewing squares of Paix and other Megistian cities are any indication, the team will not be lacking support.
