DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM - MEN'S
When all else fails, the Samahang Futbol ng Abanhfleft always has one last option to turn to when the going gets tough: look at what worked before and see if it can work again. Gennady Chernenko won the Jenna Raven Cup for the Fleftic women's football team. Can he now lead the men's team to their first World Cup finals in a long, long time?
BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic
Team colors: Blue, orange, and green
Style modifier: +2.0
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Head coach: Gennady Chernenko (68 y/o, Pridnestrovia)
STARTERS
GK: Pedro LABINDALAWA 27 y/o, Malabon SC

Pedro Labindalawa is proof that sometimes, patience does pay off in football. When he was first promoted from the Malabon youth academy, his goalkeeping skills were weak, too weak to even be considered a last-resort replacement for the Mad Pridnestrovian himself, Radislav Kalyna. Pedro did look like he could have been a good sweeper with his good pace and maybe even a clever distributor with very good passing skills. But that wasn't the type of goalkeeper Malabon wanted, at least not back then. So Pedro kept working on his craft and even went out on loan a couple of times, all while patiently waiting for his chance, which finally arrived this season after Kalyna announced his retirement. It may have taken him almost a decade to get there, but now Pedro owns the number 1 shirt for both club and country. What a turnaround for the lad.
RB: Antonio GALINDEZ 29 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis
, vice-captainRemember the time when Abanhfleft's fullbacks played more like wingbacks and were constantly bombing up and down the flanks of the pitch even when the formation had actual wingers in it? It would seem like Galindez's fullback training was in direct response to that, since while he definitely has the pace to become a wingback, the art of defending had been drilled so deeply into him that it really looks like it hurts him when he crosses the halfway line. It's strange, but apparently it works for him.
RCB: Elias THONET 30 y/o, Wanda Island Wanderers

People might say that he's a bit short for a central defender (even if he is 5 feet 10 inches), but that isn't really what Elias has been doing there ever since he first grabbed the attention of Fleftic fans while playing for Garufaloe F.C. He's already a good defender right off the bat, but his real strengths lie in his passing and technique. Wanda Island signed him to be a ball-playing center back, and that was what Levi Baak expected him to do the same for the Democratic Republic. Good thing Elias held up his end of the bargain and continues to do so under Gennady Chernenko.
LCB: Chris BELLINGHAM 29 y/o, Arsenal de Releinthi

That old joke of one inch of height making all of the difference between one's perception of how tall another person is compared to another is making rounds all over the Fleftic football fandom once again thanks to the new partnership of Elias Thonet and Chris Bellingham in the Fleftic backline. Bellingham really does look like a mountain next to Thonet, but in all seriousness, his height is only secondary to what he actually does on the pitch. His main job is to defend, defend, defend, and thanks to his height and incredible jumping ability, Bellingham is also a threat on the set piece.
LB: James LAKTAW 28 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis

James is the elder of the Laktaw brothers who actually managed to break through the Sporting Ceneisis setup to become an established member of the Blues' squad. It wasn't an easy road for James to become a trusted member a Ceneisis squad managed by Denise Crawford and then Rico Van Zant, but this is one instance in which meritocracy actually worked out. Even in his under-18 days, James already showed that he was a solid defender with very good technique when it came to getting out of danger. Other aspects of his game such as pace and passing still needed some work, hence why James went the way of many other Ceneisis academy prospects and had to develop himself on loan spells for different clubs. James broke out with Sarvusdalamoive, and after that impressive spell he has now cemented himself in the Ceneisis back line. Now he is doing the same for the senior Abanhfleft team under Gennady Chernenko.
RM: Iraklis BABALIOUTAS 28 y/o, Nagato Crownslayers
(Riena)He is the beating heart of this young team in more ways than one. On the pitch, Babalioutas may only be an average midfielder at the moment but he's already got solid technique A few more refinements to his game and maybe putting on some more muscle and he'll be pretty much ready for the Fleftic Premier League and maybe even international football. Off the pitch, Babalioutas is a lad who wears his heart on his sleeve, and he's not afraid to be seen crying, whether it's tears of sadness or tears of joy. It's just so easy to gravitate to this young man and become fond of him.
LM: Oliver THORNTON 31 y/o, Arsenal de Releinthi

One of the younger players breaking through the ranks of Arsenal de Releinthi under Oleg Mostovoi is none other than Oliver Thornton. He's not a physical specimen by any means but he has a keen eye for the killer pass. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but the key thing about him is that he actually tries to move play forward, something that surely attracted the attention of Gennady Chernenko, and now Thornton has been rewarded with a spot in the qualifying roster.
RW: Roberto CARLOS LADO 28 y/o, Athletic Wa Deg
(Copper Cuprum)Carlos Lado doesn't really look like he fits the mold of a winger: he's big, he's tall, and he's not really that fast. Well, he could definitely beat the average football fan in a foot race, but there are definitely other wingers and even fullbacks who will leave him in the dust in the blink of an eye. In fact, Lado is probably more suited to being a support striker, but that's not Gennady Chernenko wants to use his size for. In gridiron terms, Lado could be called the offensive lineman or tackle that opens the way for the running back to advance the pigskin. As far as being a winger goes though, he does have the technique to whip in an inviting cross, and he can and does score the occasional free kick, so Lado isn't just Chernenko's dumb muscle.
CAM: Sven FAHRNI 28 y/o, Ludogorets Markovsky

Fahrni has that no-nonsense attitude wherein he only needs to be told what to do once, and then he will do exactly that until someone tells him to stop. This attitude however has also given him a blunt personality wherein he says exactly what he thinks, and if he thinks that someone else is preventing him from doing his job quickly and effectively then he will tell that person to get out of his way, usually in less polite terms. That hasn't earned him a lot of friends, but because he's good at what he does, everyone else tolerates his presence on the pitch and off it. And Sven Fahrni wouldn't have it any other way.
LW: Sacit KÖZALMAZ 29 y/o, Sarvusdalamoive

Közalmaz isn't really the mirror opposite of Carlos Lado, but he does have qualities that Lado lacks. Those qualities include a better defensive mentality and the ability to dance and dribble his way out of trouble should the need arise. Pace, however, is one of Közalmaz's weaknesses, and he can't pass or cross the ball to save his life, but he does make up for it somewhat by being an actual threat in front of goal even if it isn't necessarily his job to take pot shots.
ST: Edgar SMITH-FERNANDEZ 30 y/o, Arsenal de Releinthi
, captainFor a long time, Arsenal de Releinthi had been seeking a striker that could score at least 15 to 20 goals a season as it was believed that such a player was necessary to lead the Gunners to championship glory. They tried to find the solution in the transfer market many times, only it turns out the real solution was under their noses the whole time. Edgar had to wait for his chance to shine before he could finally show his stuff, but when he did, boy did he really show his stuff. Strangely enough, while Edgar has been good enough to score at least 20 goals a season since he claimed his place in the Gunners starting eleven, Releinthi hasn't won the title since he established himself over there. Funny coincidence, right?
RESERVES
GK: Josiah MALDONADO 30 y/o, Uranium City Radiation

Who would have thought that Malabon SC would produce three of the top Fleftic goalkeepers in the present day? Definitely not Josiah Maldonado, that was for sure. Josiah came through the Malabon academy at a time when Radislav Kalyna was at his best, and there were apparently better goalkeeper prospects than him in the pipeline. Josiah ended up asking for a transfer away from Malabon, which was how he ended up in Uranium City. It definitely wasn't his dream destination, but it would be the place where he would develop not only into one of the country's top goalkeepers but also into a cult figure for the Uranium City Radiation. Josiah was the goalkeeper when Uranium City was promoted to Unang Liga for the first time, was there when they were relegated back to Liga Ikalawa, got promoted back, and then finally made the leap up to the Fleftic Premier League. His reward for his determination and grit? Being the backup goalkeeper for the national team behind fellow Malabon product Pedro Labindalawa.
GK: Rey CAEG 26 y/o, Eielo Sunlight

There was a time when many people thought, even believed that Rey Caeg was going to be the goalkeeper of the future for Malabon SC. He was never going to match Radislav Kalyna in terms of intensity and eccentricity, but Rey doesn't have to be Kalyna 2.0. He just has to be a reliable pair of hands in between the sticks for the Ravens when the time comes, and that was what he had been doing while warming the bench. He was incredibly patient too, perhaps one of the most important hidden attributes a goalkeeper could get. When Kalyna finally announced his retirement, Rey was getting ready to take over, only for Malabon to turn to Pedro Labindalawa instead. Rey took to this roster shuffle poorly and decided to move to Eielo, the same club that Labindalawa had saved from relegation last season. And then, in yet another funny twist of fate, Rey got called up to the national team for the World Cup qualifiers only to end up riding the bench once again, not just for one but for two former Malabon academy goalkeepers.
RB: Danny MORALES 29 y/o, Admiral Porcusces

Danny Morales is the walking definition of a late bloomer. He never made a single appearance for Abanhfleft's youth teams, and that might actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Everyone knows about Abanhfleft's history of failing to win anything with kids, and it's left many fans feeling like the culture of bottling is being baked into every level of the national team setup. Thankfully, Danny never went through any of that because he was never the most highly rated prospect for Admiral Porcusces, let alone the entire country. Danny dutifully rode the bench after coming through the academy and making the usual loan spells to lower league clubs, serving as the backup option to the Tikariotan right back Xavier Raffan for the Sea Foxes. However, after a run of poor form from Raffan, Danny finally got the nod to start on the right side, and his impressive performances in Filibusters' Street earned him an unexpected call-up from Gennady Chernenko.
RCB: Jevon EUSEBIO 31 y/o, Xemlice Rovers

Jevon Eusebio had already shown glimpses of greatness even while he was rising through the ranks of Xemlice Rovers, from the academy to the first team, but this was the first season that the defender finally showed that he had what it takes to be an FPL-quality player. Almost a decade later and while he's begun to slow down, Jevon still has a place in Gennady Chernenko's team, just not in the starting eleven anymore.
LCB: Leo ORAYANI 23 y/o, Botafogo de Maranao
(Sultanate of Oontaz)The last time Leo Orayani was anywhere near the Fleftic national football team, it was back in the Di Bradini Cup with the Young Revolutionaries. As usual, Abanhfleft didn't do anything of note in the longest running youth football tournament in the multiverse during Leo's time with the team, and he personally hadn't impressed a lot of people as well. No wonder Malabon SC found it easy to give him up and let him go to Botafogo de Maranao in the Sultanate of Oontaz, where he ended up developing into one of the best defenders the Sultanate has ever seen. Some have even taken to calling him a divine defender, which is definitely a bit of an over-exaggeration, but there's no denying that Leo wouldn't look too out of place in the FPL, and perhaps he wouldn't be too out of place in a World Cup qualifier as well.
LB: Isay HASSAN 24 y/o, Marinos Thimpodopoulos
(Fhulghamous Peninsula, playing in Abanhfleft)Isay Hassan is supposed to be a bit of a jack-of-all-trades on the left side of the defense with his technique and passing, but he is also paradoxically better at attacking than defending. Not to say that he's entirely incapable of defending, but he has a tendency to be left behind in counterattacking situations, which is all that can be said about his defending without dipping into slandering the poor fellow. And that's not something that Gennady Chernenko wants in his left backs, but options had been surprisingly thin, so Chernenko opted to play it safe and call up someone who already had experience playing for the white shirt of the national team.
RM: Adonis DI-ANO 24 y/o, General Santos F.C.
(Sultanate of Oontaz)Adonis Di-ano didn't really set the world on fire when he was playing for the Abanhfleft under-21s, and he still didn't set the world on fire when he moved away from Xemlice Rovers to become a regular starter for General Santos F.C. in the Sultanate of Oontaz. Adonis is not a flashy player, nor does he really need to be. He relies more on his smarts and his feet, finding teammates in spaces that most others wouldn't even consider. He's turned into an incredible passer during his time in the slower pace of the Oontaznik First Division, but this is liable to put him under pressure once the tempo gets just a little bit faster. At least he had already put on the white shirt of the Democratic Republic before, which is apparently a new criteria that Gennady Chernenko has included in his selection checklist.
LM: Audric DUBREUCQ 29 y/o, Malabon SC

Dubreucq is not the best young midfielder in Abanhfleft, not even by a country mile. But he pretty much makes up for his shortcomings by being the kind of guy who gives his all when it comes to either defending or attacking. That being said, he's best utilized as a counterattacking player. He's speedy and he's got a wicked left foot on him. That left peg of his is strong enough to turn a football into a cannonball, and if he existed in a cartoon world, Dubreucq would be putting holes into goalkeepers' chests every single game.
RW: Tony CHAMBERS 29 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz North End

Time will tell if Tony's sudden emergence onto the Fleftic footballing scene is sustainable or if he's just another flash in the pan. Gennady Chernenko hopes to take advantage of the hype while it lasts by calling Tony up for the qualifiers for the 99th World Cup but the guy already has his work cut out for him. Tony is an excellent pacy winger... in Unang Liga, the second tier of Fleftic football. Many players who shone in Unang Liga often find themselves struggling once they make the step up to the FPL. And Tony here has to go up against actual international caliber players as well. Talk about a baptism of fire. Well, considering Rosen North is still in the Fleftic Premier League, is it fair to say that Tony has survived is BoF? Probably.
CAM: Edgar MACASERO 27 y/o, General Santos F.C.
(Sultanate of Oontaz)Edgar was one of those guys who looked like he was going to tear up the Fleftic footballing scene once he got his chance to play. However, as had become customary for most of Abanhfleft's youth players, Edgar's time in the Under-18 World Cup and the Di Bradini Cup shook his confidence in his own ability to play, and Edgar had to leave the Democratic Republic to rediscover himself. It would appear that that was exactly what he did in the Sultanate of Oontaz, and he has turned himself into an indispensable player for General Santos F.C. He's not quite as indispensable for the national team, but he's still there in the 23-man roster, and he provides something different to Sven Fahnri if opponents have figured out how to get under the skin of the "Fleftic Terminator".
LW: Marty BUSTAMANTE 28 y/o, Paulsen F.C.

Marty Bustamante is yet another player who has had experience riding the bench, his time in the dugout for Rosenpfelblatz North End was composed mainly of nothing but waiting. He finally got his chance to show his stuff a handful of times when the Acolytes were promoted to the Fleftic Premier League a couple of seasons ago, and while he didn't manage to nail down a starting spot with Rosen North, Marty got enough attention to be signed by Paulsen F.C. to run down the left wing while they sorted out the nationality situation of their old left winger Francois Bernard from The 14 Stars.
ST: Bradley AQUINO 30 y/o, Kimmirut Panhandle

People have always rated Bradley's older brother Braydon Aquino as being the future national team player, at least the one assured of getting consistent call-ups and starts. But once again, those people were wrong, and it is now Bradley who has seemingly nailed down a place in the starting eleven while Braydon is nowhere near the senior Revolutionaries team. It's almost carbon copy of the story of the Williamson siblings, Charlene and Gareth. Everyone also thought that Gareth would go on to do great things with the Revolutionaries while Charlene would fade into obscurity. Instead, the exact opposite happened. What a freaky coincidence, right?
