The Eight Nations Shield is a new competition aiming to bring together some of the best baseball teams in the multiverse in preparation for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, in order to build chemistry while competing at the highest level and giving young players a chance to earn their way into the national team.

Format:
Every team will be playing three Best-of-five series. The first round will be randomly drawn. Every subsequent round will also be randomly paired, but always matching up teams that have the same series record so far -- in the second round, winners will play each other. One team will win all their three series -- this team will be the winner of the Eight Nations Shield.
In order to make the scheduling more predictable, teams are encouraged to play out their 5-game series even if the outcome has already been decided. This is optional, however, and teams may choose to decline playing extraneous games. These additional games, if played, will count for medal placement, though.
Tiebreakers: Series Wins – Game Win Percentage – Head to Head Record
The tournament will be scorinated with xkoranate, using the Snelweg formula.

You may choose to send a youth team of some sort, but sending senior squads (or squads close to that) is encouraged. Also, feel free to simply copy over the roster from the last WBC (or prepare the one for the next one early!) -- this is not supposed to be work for you.

Any undeclared use of AI will be treated as plagiarism.

WELCOME TO SOUTH NEWLANDIA

Things to know
South Newlandia is a small Esportivan island with about four million inhabitants, located somewhere east of Super-Llamaland and northwest of Katzeburg. South Newlandia is known for democracy, elephants, regulated capitalism and environmentalism, and its friendly population.

With South Newlandia being so small, tickets will be in short supply – even though its not a massive tournament, tickets are cheap and officials are expecting seats to get filled. Even if you can’t get a seat in the stadiums, that isn’t that big of a deal. In many spots around the country, opportunities to watch the games on a big screen, and in many places, it’s completely free of charge.
Note that South Newlandia has full prohibition on selling or giving away all drugs, including nicotine and alcohol. Consumption and import in quantities for personal use is not criminalised.

Getting around inside South Newlandia isn’t a huge problem, it is often more difficult to arrive in the first place. That’s the case with all islands, but South Newlandia has rather few flights and ships exiting and entering, mostly because of environmental regulations.
When you arrive, the best option are the multiple high-speed trains that can get you almost everywhere in the country quickly. If you don’t like trains, for some reason, there are also busses and cars to rent, but the streets aren’t always in perfect condition, and are far less convenient, to be honest. Inland flights are banned in South Newlandia.

The tournament will take place entirely within the South Newlandian capital of Elephant Valley, with the two LPB stadiums in the city hosting all games.

Elephant Stadium (30,000)
The biggest South Newlandian baseball stadium is located in the relative South of the capital city Elephant Valley. The stadium was recently upgraded again and is now able to host 30,000 people. All fifteen home games of WBC48 were played here, and the unranked Elephants won twelve of them, including all of the first ten home games, cementing this place’s reputation as the Ellie home. This stadium also featured multiple play-off series at WBC51, and has more broadly been the South Newlandian home ground for ages. Domestically, this is the home of the Elephant Valley Homers.

Southern Valley Arena (12,500)
Also located in the South of Elephant Valley, the home of the Snow Bears is a little further inland. The stadium has only very limited history as a host for international games, but was one of the host stadiums for IBS19. The Snow Bears have also won a South Newlandian title here.

Team Zwangzug, known as the "Zebras," were an early force in the WBC but later faded from relevance. They competed consistently through WBC31, reappeared for 39 and 40, and then popped back again in cycle 49, having entered the last few since then. In WBC55, they were runners-up to South Newlandia in an epic extra-inning game seven. Happily, the 39-40 cycle saw Felix Wainwright break the alleged radio announcers' curse. This doesn't mean we'll necessarily have competent announcers, or any announcers at all; just that we could have some capable of holding down the job for multiple cycles. If we wanted to.

Like their distant ancestors, the Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used when we play at our home stadium (the Worm Hole in Spenson). They tend to be somewhat new-mathy with regards to not bunting, not stealing very much, etc.

Manager: Griffith Puyo-Sachar (m). Formerly a shortstop for the Weegham Rainmakers, and a Zebras player in cycles 52-54. Now manager of the 102d Gray Sox. His wife, Nancy, is a former midfielder for the national football team. When not angsting over determinism versus free will or the dangers of robots to human identity, Griffith is actually a rather pleasant person. That he took over as Zebras manager as early as WBC55 was a slight surprise, but it paid off splendidly as the national team reached the championship series.

List here, by position, in rough depth-chart order. Feel free to mix and match from this. Most players can shift position slightly (infielders likely to switch to other infield, outfielders to other outfield or DH, etc.) Relievers are in very rough decreasing-leverage priority order. We have people whose primary position is DH even though we don't use the DH at home. Everyone has to know their place.

Factbook is ludicrously out of date by now and just linked for tradition's sake. More information about the country is available on the wiki and is infrequently being added to. Thank God We Have the MBL Because It Makes This Easier

Normally newspapers within Milchama are entirely IC joints and if Milchama wants to make an IC point, they will use a newspaper. Why am I talking about myself in the third person? Irrelevant. Anyways, it's the two conversationalists who blur, distort, lampshade, and often ignore the fourth wall but frankly there is no other way to talk about this roster other than to say thank you MBL for giving me more baseball players! The additional baseball players mean that I can more easily fill out this roster and in a more efficient manner. Also, we'll be doing the rest of the MBL season in this thread because why not? Oh yeah we'll call this team the Warriors in Training because it's funny and marks them as the "A" team in cricket terms.

Lineup:
Diego McConstaff - CF LHB - Tel Chittor Forts - Look you win 120 some games and managers are really into picking your starters for the national team. McConstaff is also really good. The leadoff hitter for the MBL giants gets the nod for the Warriors in Training.
Liam Hasalenger 3B Switch - Karakorum Mongols - A super utility player in the Ben Zobrist mold. Hasalenger is known to play LF/RF/2B/3B above average while on basing around .380. If he does well here will possibly be a starter for the Warriors.
Eden Hazardly - RF LHB - Alexandria Commies - Hazardly can hit but doesn't hit well enough to play on the best team but definitely good enough for an A team. Normally plays CF at club level but moving to right here.
Tal Ted 1B RHB - Tel Chittor Forts - One of the best hitters in the MBL last year, is going to hold this lineup together.
Miles Horndeck LF RHB Alexandria Ships - The Ships somehow were shutout of NTers in the position players, not anymore! Horndeck is a solid player all around. Plays RF for the Ships but moves to left here.
David Gavry C RHB - New Babylon Pirates - He's the starting catcher now!
Missy Shapiro - RHB - Alexandria Commies - Gets rewarded for gold glove play in the infield. She can hit a bit as well but mostly on the team for defense.
Sydney Meyer 2B RHB - Akkad Libraries - Great defender, can somewhat contribute on offense.

General thoughts about the Warriors in Training lineup:
Holy crap can we catch the ball! Meyer and Shapiro are two of the best shortstops in the MBL as double play partners, insane. Two centerfielders and the best defensive right fielder playing left field in the outfield! Our opponents BABIP is going to be like .100. However, the hitting is a bit suspect after Ted. Horndeck is fine but has never had serious NT consideration, Gavry, Shapiro, and Meyer are all bench players on the Warriors specifically because of their bats and only Gavry hits in the top half of their order for their club teams. We'll see how it goes but it could get ugly fast.

Starting Rotation:
Eyal Ben Levi RH New Sparta Phalanx - The Phalanx's ace for the past few years, finally able to crack a NT. If he has a good performance, expect him on the Warriors.
Milo Vashington RH Alexandria Ships - Rewarded for a career year where he won 25 games with a sub 3 ERA.
Sagra Filipintes RH Karakorum Mongols -
Riise Gendleman LH - New Sparta Phalanx - Look the rotation needed a lefty and he was the best one left (no pun intended but that's a solid pun tbh). Still a solid second starter for the Phalanx.
Misgav Pardes LH Alexandria Commies - Not the sons of anything but the Bastard of Young is known for an aggressive breaking ball heavy repertoire. Expect forkballs, slurves, curves, sliders, and split fingers from him as nothing goes straight and everything moves.

General thoughts on the pitching staff:
The first two starters are very good, after that it gets a touch dicey but it should be fine. A lot of B+ players all around but that's what you would expect with an A team. Nobody terrible but definitely somebody you would say is better at every position. What's interesting here is the lack of youth, clearly the Warriors in Training was selected more as an Hall of Very Good team for now and not a move towards the future. We'll see how that goes.

Basically, we want to play all 5, 1 starter per game (though the order in which they start probably doesn't matter), do whatever except we would never a use DH, that's blasphemy. The Japanese Central League are traitors.

Milchamian Playing Style:
Imagine a more powerful and sabermetric friendly version of somewhere between 1960s and 1980s baseball, lots of stolen bases, hustle, taking the extra base etc. Starters attempt to go 9 and rarely go less than 7. That said, sabermetrics are a thing and on base percentage is the most important hitting stat, launch angle is a known concept, and generally statistical analysis is very similar to modern MLB.

A note on Milchamian pitchers:
Since cricket got increasingly popular in Milchama over the Isolation there has been a concurrent belief in increasing the ability of pitchers to hit. Therefore, Milchamian pitchers tend to hit like Greg Maddux or like pitchers in the 1920s. Not actually good hitters but will be able to get on base if you give them an easy pitch.

Relievers note:
Relievers are listed in order of leverage situation. RP 1 = reliever likely to come on during the highest leverage situation, RP 2 in the second most important etc. No traditional closer but you get the idea.

Background information
Named the Phoenix in this incarnation after reforming following the Kytlerian Isolation, the Kytlerian national baseball team have shot into the upper echelons of the sport in very little time at all, but still nobody was prepared for them to become the Kytlerian team to make the final four of any of the "Big Five" team sport events - WC, WB, WBC, IBC, WCoH - in their history, before or after the Isolation. Certainly not in the way they did, beating Banija, South Newlandia, and Drawkland in successive series (losing only one game in the first two of those combined!) before falling in seven to Quebec and Shingoryeo in the Championship Series.

Kytlerian baseball has evolved in a distinctive direction, and the origin story for this was the unique way the DH debate was settled here. Under the "Kytlerian Compromise," pitchers bat, but managers have one opportunity per game to sub in a pinch-hitter for the pitcher but not remove the pitcher from the game (the use of this must be declared at the time of the substitution). The pioneering manager Angufams Apyrphung reasoned that if he used this opportunity on the starting pitcher's first plate appearance, then immediately pulled the pitcher on the second, his starter would not only never need to bat but would almost certainly have a low enough load to be able to start on shorter rest next game. After Apyrphung's Clifford Milliners won three national titles in a row, his methods became increasingly popular across the league, and now it is absolutely standard practice for Kytlerian teams to use a three- (or at most four-)starter rotation on very limited pitch counts; that, of course, means more relief innings (but also more relievers to share them).

The Kytlerian Baseball League is now a feeder league to the newly-introduced Rushmori Elite Baseball League (REBL), a merger with the Tikariotian Baseball League.

Scouting Report
Executive summary: Ígorsson's talent for yeeting the ball across the park with or without a bat and Asbjørnsson's knack for big hits at exactly the right (or wrong) time make them the most influential of the team's several power-over-hit corner bats; Fox and Bolton are old-school leadoff men who have the speed and skill to get on base and stop you doing the same but will only hit homers by accident. The pitchers in the rotation make 75-pitch-max starts every three games; Lundy is the ace, with control his big strength. Relievers will be deployed extensively and fluidly, but the two typically deployed in the biggest moments are Park with his splitter/four-seamer combo and Young with her screwball/sinker surprises.

Catchers: With Ryan Marshall sitting this Eight Nations Shield out as a load management procedure on account of now being nearer 40 than 30 - it's perhaps a surprise none of the rest of the WBC61 roster has done the same, but then none of the others are as old as him - primary catcher duties will fall to Magnusson, a slap-hitting switch-hitter who is calm to a fault behind the plate. Eyjólfsdóttir is a cool story - there are few enough women in Kytlerian baseball at all, let alone at catcher - and can absolutely call a game very well for whoever's on the mound. Wilopteere is an Absolute Unit type who strikes out too often to be trusted in the lineup but hits too many bombs to give up on; behind the plate, he can be a bit flub-prone but his rocket arm will gun down would-be base-stealers like the FFR military guns down protestors. Expect all three to make starts in the 8NS.

Infielders: Ígorsson, one of several Græntfjaller-Kytlerian dual nationals on this team who are often referred to as "BFGs" (the B is for Big, the G is obvious, and you can decide for yourself what the F is), is probably the biggest star on this entire team even though a major injury took him out of the Phoenix's improbable run through the WBC61 bracket. He takes massive hacks when he finds the right pitch and is decently diligent in holding off the wrong ones, and though he's far too slow for an up-the-middle position his cannon arm can yeet baserunners from third base or right field. Njálsson and Álfarsson are cut from the same BFG cloth, and are classic three-true-outcome types. By utter contrast, Anderson and Fox are slick-fielding shortstops (with the former usually deployed at second owing to her weaker arm) who make a heck of a double-play duo (formerly doing so for the Icenbrook Foxes, aptly enough, before they became merely an affiliate to the Edencliff Magicians in the REBL reorganisation). They would be true superstars if they had anything resembling power, but they don't, so they aren't.

Outfielders: Asbjørnsson was meant to only be remembered for his contribution to Kytlerian radio history; now he's the hero of the greatest achievement in Kytlerian team sport history following a string of clutch homers in WBC61. Bolton can play all over the outfield but a relatively modest arm has historically kept him in left, where he is a plus-plus glove to go with his old-school leadoff routine of regularly getting on first base and then stealing second. Lopez is an elite up-the-middle defender - at both CF and SS - even in his 30s, and with practically pitcher-grade vulnerability at the plate he's finally become a pure defensive replacement (and a damned good one) with the emergence of the more well-rounded Minanad, whose strikeout rate went from crushing weakness to merely acceptable price to pay for his other strengths soon enough for him to play a big part in that WBC61 run. The hyper-athletic Färm was an aspiring pro skateboarder before focusing on baseball in his teens, and makes highlight-reel catches on an unnervingly regular basis; he's still figuring it out a bit at the plate but isn't a total zero there and has deceptively huge rotational power for his size when he does connect (because, well, he kind of developed that from skating).

Starting pitchers: The fixed rotation order, pending injury, is Lundy, Whootung, Mopukest.

Lundy does his best work with his four-seam fastball, which he consistently locates well, and pairs it with (in decreasing order of usage) a slider, cutter, and changeup. Notorious as the "face of 4/75" - the Kytlerian-style short-rotation approach adopted by the Apple Valley Vipers upon his arrival, one they doubled down on to the point of trading away ace Naomi Alvarado - to the point that it's become easy to forget about what his actual skills are, and those are "plenty good enough to make the Vipers and Phoenix alike feel good when he takes the mound."

Whootung is a fastball-slider power pitcher whom many Kytlerian analysts have expected to move into relief due to his limited repertoire and low lefty arm slot, but proved his starting capabilities to the point of being an LPB All-Star last cycle. His changeup has improved since his move to the multiverse's premier competition, and alongside his slider he has two pitches that get big whiffs from hitters who feel the need to cheat on the heat.

Mopukest moved to the rotation from a swingman role for WBC61 and entrenched his clutch reputation there, notably in a one-hit, 19-out start in Game 5 of the Semifinal Series. He builds his profile around two excellent heaters - a hard four-seamer full of rise from his vertical arm slot, and a two-seamer that offers confounding arm-side run. His curveball is improving but can still be too easily spotted out of his hand - but his changeup isn't, and is capable of drawing plenty of too-early swings even though he doesn't have the best feel for it.

Relief pitchers: Cothasat, Matthews, and O'Carroll are starters for their KBL clubs and are designated as swingmen for the Phoenix; if a starter gets injured, one of them will step into the rotation. Cothasat is noted for his sinker and two-seamer, which draw plenty of weak contact and help his relatively modest four-seamer to play up around the top of the zone; he also has a lesser-deployed curveball that can be a surprise strike-stealer at least (and indeed at most). Matthews is a classic command-and-control lefty with mid-at-best stuff from his four-seamer/sinker/slider/changeup mix. O'Carroll is a 205cm Unit who has been hyped to the point of it being a bit silly in Kytlerian circles, but his wipeout sweeper and scorching four-seamer are that good even though his command and his secondary pitches (changeup, cutter) still aren't and at this point seemingly never will be.

There's no fixed hierarchy in this pen, but Quebecois-Kytlerian Park has historically been the first choice for saves; his splitter has scary late movement and tunnels beautifully with his four-seam fastball, while he also has a slider that surprises the unprepared. However, in many WBC61 games he got the ball in the eighth and handed over to Young, an All-Star alternate in the most recent LPB season in the ninth; her trademark dastardly screwball draws all kinds of whiffs and her sinker is a groundball machine. Of the other pure relievers here, Dijkstra is a sinker-slider guy whose specialist subject is getting groundballs, which is a decent area to specialise in when you have the Fox-Anderson double team duo behind you; Faleafaga, one of the few Aboriginal players in REBL, brings the nation's fastest fastball (touching the mid-160s in metric, or 103 in Vibe Units) to the table and could be devastating if and when he gets more control over both that and the slider he pairs it with; Zierer-Quigley, whose name has earned him the amusing nickname "Triple Word Score," offers essentially a fastball variety pack with his four-seamer/two-seamer/splinker mix and is also a dose of control away from being terrifying rather than merely quite scary; both Edroklis and Hottotelen are reasonably controlled power relievers but without quite the same level of power, and differ mostly in which arm that stuff comes out of.

The overarching opinion is that they are not, but that remains to be seen! With that in mind - there are a lot of players taking the field here, and there's expected to be plenty of rotation in order to make sure everybody is taking their turn.

Jonas Nuhl - longtime manager of the Elephant Valley Snow Bears - is finally getting his shot at the helm of a national team. The Krauts - after a brief hiatus - were expected to promote him with the retirement of Henderson Mausse, but instead they decided to go with Leonardo Harrison - a legend and batting coach. Jonas Nuhl was reportedly miffed by the move, but remained in his longtime position as assistant manager. He did have some controversial moments on the podium during WBC 60 - including once time saying he didn't care that reliever Corey Nielman hadn't fed clubhouse dog Ol' Red! But he's getting his shot here, since Leonardo Harrison is busy being cool.

That said, Ol' Red will be serving as assistant manager and clubhouse dog. This can be a very stressful time for these athletes, as they're basically trying out for national team looks and maybe even LPB time - so having a red golden retriever kind of floofer around should help with that.

Overview
The Elephants are bringing a 30-player roster to the Eight Nations, comprising of the best players in the country and some hopefuls. They’re hoping to gain experience and chemistry ahead of the upcoming WBC62, and also work with their new manager for the first time. For the Classic, they’ll have to narrow the player pool to 25, so everyone on this team is eager to prove they belong.

After 10 World Baseball Classics, including 6 final appearances and three championships, Sofia Rasmussen, the Elephants’ long-time manager, has retired as one of the most successful baseball managers ever, and certainly as an Elephants legend. The man chosen to replace her is, for some reason, Franklin Bell.
Franklin Bell famously pitched for Drawkland for ages, including perhaps the most famous sporting moment of all time, and was a player at the same time as both Sofia Rasmussen, who he has pitched to when they were both active, and many of the players he’s now going to be coaching. After retiring from pitching, he became a coach, first with the LPB’s Peninsulara Kingfishers, which he inexplicably turned into a good team, and later as a Bullpen Coach with the Drawkian national team, who also inexplicably turned good. So, the Elephants are either about to go 4-26 in the next Classic or win in dominating fashion. Or something in between. Welcome to the Franklin Bell experience!

Drawkland's National Baseball Team - The Base Corps

Champions of the inaugural Eight Nations Shield, Drawkland's Base Corps is back to defend their title! Somehow they're also ranked #1 in the WBC, despite still not having won the major title. Now they're walking into a tournament where they're considered the favorites? Of course this is a small tournament with more interesting rosters, so normalcy can be throw out the window. The last final was Drawkland vs Dhemixia for divine's sake, you can leave actual baseball expectations at the door.

Besides a few key veterans on both sides of the ball, this roster mostly consists of young players with little to no WBC experience. Whether or not they make it to the WBC Base Corps roster remains to be seen! Also, heed the standard boilerplate note about Drawkian physiology. I'm fairly certain everybody in this tournament already knows about that, so I'm not gonna go in depth.

Management
The full Base Corps coaching complement couldn't be assembled for this tournament. Glenn Sutton is still considered the manager of the Base Corps, but he respectfully declined to lead the team for this tournament, citing age-related fatigue. Thankfully DISC received this notice well in advance, and was able to select an interim manager with enough time to get everything sorted before the tournament.

[Interim Manager] Ramon Santos Previously manager of the Sadeg State University team, who won IBC 19. Currently manager of the Jaffro Drawks in LPB, who have won the SNLCS under his tenure. Solid offensive mind.
[Bench Coach] Daniel Simmons Ramon Santos's bench coach at Jaffro. Easy pick to keep things simple for Santos.
[Trainer/S&C] Nicholas Kingston Elite Eleven member with plentiful medical certifications, works with most Drawkian NTs. Clearly fiending for money if he's showing up for this, too.
[Hitting Coach] Roger Madison Former Base Corps legend. Excellent contact hitter throughout his career. Mostly a nostalgia hire but he gives good hitting advice.
[Pitching Coach] Leo Roy Former Base Corps legend, also. Absolutely surgical approach with a huge arsenal in his prime. Brought on since this tournament is less serious and Roy is looking to get into pitching.

There's no unique pitching philosophy across the board, but given Drawkland's history with the bullpen, starters will be asked to pitch as many innings as they can handle.

For the first time ever in an MBL, two teams have identical records after 166 games. As a refresher here are the standings after 165 games:

Which, of course, led to the Rivalry Game, the final game of the year for all teams against their biggest rivals, in a one game series that has become a defining event of the MBL schedule. New Sparta and the Alexandria Ships were tied and not playing each other, as the Ships, obviously, had the Derby against the Commies and New Sparta played the Pirates.
In the Alexandria Derby, the Ships scored 6 runs in the 4th inning to beat the Commies 11-9. Martin O'Garon's grand slam in the 4th inning good enough to make the difference for the Ships and get them, at minimum, playoff adjacent.

Meanwhile in New Sparta, the Phalanx hung together, out organized, and outplayed the Pirates to win 9-5. This game was not as close as the score indicated as Erez Goldman was a one man wrecking machine, ending the season with a 3 homer day, as only two other Pirates got on base (in front of Goldman in the 7th) as Goldman pulled a Mike Trout from that famous Angels tweet.

There were a few interesting developments, the first, as discussed, was the tie for fourth place, the second was it was the first time in MBL history that two Banijan teams had qualified for the playoffs, and of course the fact that two time Magen Ikhaka winners Tel Chittor finished in 6th place, 3 games back of the tie in 4th. This is really showing how the MBL has improved the overall quality of baseball in Banija as the Banijan teams have gone from whipping boys, only two teams finished in the top half in MBL 1, to much more equal which means that there is more depth in Banijan baseball than ever; watch out for the Lions? (I can never keep which Banija NT is called which in which sport) in the near future. Additionally, the struggles of Tel Chittor indicate a busy off season for them and we expect something big to change with them. That big change will probably culminate in a super interesting hot stove season which we'll figure out soon.

Anyways, to the real drama, the MBA and BBA had somehow not discussed tie breaking procedures in the merger which as the season wound down led to some semi-panicked backroom conversations. Both federations agreed pretty much immediately that deciding things on tie breakers that weren't games were out so no head to head records, run differential, Pythag winning percentage etc. The tie would be settled on the field. The only question was how long would the series be? The Milchamians initially proposed 5 games but that was voted down by the Banijans who immediately asked for a 1 game winner take all playoff. The Milchamians were ok with losing 5 games but wanted 3 games, at least, and there was a long 7 hour meeting where both sides hashed out their arguments. In the end, the Banijans won the day and it was a 1 game playoff.

Alexandria got the home game for the playoff because of a superior Pythagorean record. The anticipation was thick in the air as the game began with the second starters for both teams on the hill (as they spent their aces in the Rivalry game to get here in the first place) but both aces available as relievers; Riise Gendleman for the Phalanx, Milo Vashington for the Ships, who are both playing for Milchama in the 8 Nations Series! (look we managed to find a connection to the actual tournament being played!).

Gendleman immediately got into trouble in the first inning, walking leadoff hitter Hendrick Farlen. He was then bunted over to second and a steal of third gave the Ships a runner on third with one out. Another walk to Dillon Marks helped Miles Horndeck hit a double to score two runs and give Alexandria an early lead. Vashington had no such nerves, surrendering only 2 baserunners until the 5th inning when a 2 out single by pitcher Gendleman didn't look so harmless after a double by Marquez and a single by Eitan Ben David led to two runs and a tie ball game.

This tie, of course, got into the Ships heads, giving up a game tying inning on a two out rally with a pitcher hitting?! Typical Ships. The Ships, always the little brothers of the more successful and universally loved (and loathed) Commies. The Ships, a team known for blowing it, a team that everybody expects to lose at the most inopportune times, in the most inopportune ways. The crowd immediately silenced expecting the worst and a 1-2-3 bottom of the 5th did nothing to allay those fears. The bats had gone silent, Gendleman was cruising, the third time through the order was fake, the Ships bullpen would never be that reliable and anyway the Phalanx bullpen was better. Even if Vashington went 1-2-3 back in the 6th, everybody knew the prelude was going to come in the last third of the game. It's all going to go wrong. Sure, Rachel Hanslen, moved up the order for this game, led off with a single, and then a nice steal of second but that's irrelevant after Paz Rivers popped out. Then up comes Quebecois catcher Luca Conti, the new import, and a key reason the Ships had gotten here to begin with. Conti doesn't know that history and he sure didn't seem scared of the moment as he hit a screamer off the wall, easily scoring Hanslen and ending up on second himself, 3-2 game! Even better, Hayden Flartoonik, who hit .240 all year, finally connected with one getting a nice Texas Leaguer over the head of Gold Glover Missy Shapiro at short. 4-2! Holy Ship! Vashington was taken out for a pinch hitter and the inning sputtered out, an aggressive move by Torvald Applegate but one that could work.

It did work! Barry Bruck shut down the Phalanx for two innings and Tookan worked a perfect 9th as the Alexandria Ships won 4-2.

This gives us the tantalizing possibility of an Alexandria Derby in the finals which would ramp up the rivalry to a whole new level as it's not just all of Milchama who gets in on the Alexandria lore but Banija too. However, the Bukusuma Rhinos, winners of 93 games last year, in a much more unbalanced league, have improved significantly. The only playoff team to increase their win total from last year, they are a pretty good team. The Ships just won an emotional game just to get here and hope to ride that momentum to victory. Meanwhile, the Commies, who lost in the semifinals last year, are back and hoping for more and the Herzegovina Hippos, now the only team in MBL history to have made the playoffs in every season, started the season 25-35 but went on a tear winning 69 (nice) of their last 120 games to finish 94-72. It's going to be a great playoffs and we can't wait to see you through it!

All-Herzegovina Ballplayers Club

A strange entry into the Eight Nations Shield- not quite a national team, but still bound by blood. What is this, exactly?

Herzegovina City is a very important city in Banija. It is the oldest major city, and the original historic capitol of the Kasanke Tribe, who are the direct predecessors to the modern Banijan nation-state, as it was established in 1615. Being such an old city, it has tons of history- and it is the cultural heart and soul of Banija. And with Banija a society where blood matters, and where local pride, especially here in the State of Moravica, is so common, the existence of clubs such as this one is not uncommon.

It is an invitation only, private member's club- so, one might wonder, how do you get in? It was established over 100 years ago, back before the professionalization of baseball within Banija, when some retired players just wanted to hang with local retired players. Over time, there have been developed two criteria to get membership into the club- 1, play either division 1 college baseball, or professional baseball for a team in the city area, for at least a full season. 2, be born in the city, and play in the World Baseball Classic. The college teams that count for these purposes- Northern Moravica, Moravica International University, Moravica State University, and then Igara University. The only professional team that counts for this is the Herzegovina City Hippos. Now, obviously, while all members who have gotten membership via the second way have played for either the Banijan or Busogan national teams, you could join, essentially, from anywhere. And lastly, it doesn't matter if you fulfill either invite criteria- if you play baseball for the University of Loyola-Istria, you are banned from membership.

Active players and retired players alike fill the club- it is unique, as most other Banijan cities do not have a club like this, especially in baseball. But- if you played baseball for Loyola-Istria, you are excluded from membership. Now, one might ask- how did they get to don the national team jerseys for the Eight Nations Shield?

Well, it was unclear whether or not the senior NT would attend. After a lot of deliberation, with a heavy schedule the past few years, including the Olympiad, the primary senior NT would get the tournament off. But then, who would show up here? The EVP of the baseball division is an honorary member of the All-Herzegovina Ballplayers Club, and shockingly, Patrick Zervos- an alumnus of Loyola-Istria, who would be banned from club membership hypothetically because of his alma mater, signed off on the plan.

Other: When we are pitching, they induce a lot of ground balls. The strike out rates aren't terribly high for Banijan pitchers, but they play solid, fundamental defense, and they have strong arms all over the diamond. However, while Banija's rotation is one of the strongest in the multiverse, the bullpen leaves much to be desired, especially the middle relievers, who are well known to be the team's weakest link. For the knockout stages, we'll have one starter in the 4 man rotation available every game for an inning or two out of the bullpen. That is listed in the rotation. If those guys are brought in, it is for an absolute maximum of 35 pitches, however many outs that takes.

The Phoenix are an anomaly amongst 8NS teams this go-around in fielding essentially their first-choice roster; the sense is that they want to maintain the team spirit that guided them through that run in the WBC on home soil and extend it to not-Kytlerian ballparks.

With that said, it's hard to know if anyone cares that much about winning, whoever they have playing. "The measure of success here for us is how good the at-bats look when we're at the plate, how good the stuff and control look on the mound, how well we execute in the field," suggested manager Dean Charles. "Every plate appearance, every pitch, is a data point. And we want to learn from those so that we can know what to focus on in the main event."

And those data points aren't just confined to the same few starting players. In just the first five-game series with Drawkland (who won three of them), every single position player on the Phoenix roster made at least one start and every single pitcher on the roster faced at least four batters. "It was great to get everyone involved," Charles emphasised. "The best way for us to know what our best lineup options are right now is to try out all of the players who might be in it in various combinations, particularly defensively because obviously it doesn't where on the defensive spectrum you are when you have a bat in your hand."

In that regard, it was a good series for Fredrik Färm, who made multiple eye-catching plays at the CF position in Game 3's 3-1 Phoenix win. With Fyls Minanad charged with an error out there in the next game that put a runner on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth who was duly driven in by catcher Jimmy Todd to bring the Base Corps level at 4-4 and spark an eventual rally that produced seven runs in the next two innings for an 11-4 final, the former skateboarder may just have forced a switch in his role and grabbed a starting role, the main question being if he's ready for that kind of grind. "I still have time on my side," acknowledged the 25-year-old Färm, the second-youngest position player on the roster after 22-year-old catcher Clituleng Wilopteere. "My best baseball is yet to come, especially as obviously I haven't been focused on it full-time for as long as even some other players my age. Obviously I had the athletic and work ethic foundation as someone who was competitive in another sport, but baseball has many surprises and details to consider and of course I am still learning them all. But to be even talked about as a national team regular at this stage in my career is more than I could have anticipated when I first committed full-time to the sport."

Next up are five games with Zwangzug, another team to look much as they did in WBC play. "Perhaps both of our teams being largely first-choice will give this series a little edge," noted Charles. "But I think they, like us, ultimately know that this is a data-driven sport and the number one priority in a setting like this is to gather more data on how your players look with high-level opponents throwing at you or being thrown at by you."
