The Move, Part 3

Postby Recuecn » Tue Jan 13, 2026 2:49 am

A week before the IAC

A pair of journalists caught sight of Rébecca as she stepped out of FNRF headquarters.

"Rébecca, Rébecca!"

"Mademoiselle Firaut!"

Rébecca smiled and threw up a peace sign as the photographer snapped some pictures. The second journalist, a reporter, immediately began peppering her with questions.

"Mademoiselle Firaut, how does it feel to be the only Firaut on the équipe nationale!? Are you ready to play on the team without your father there to back you up? Are your parents travelling to HUElavia and the Free Republics with you?"

"Whoa, whoa whoa, chillax!" Rébecca flashed a toothy grin. "One question at a time! There's no rush, I'll answer them all!" It was truly remarkable how much Rébecca's relationship with the papparazzi had changed since the end of the players' strike. Just a few years ago, every press event, photo op, and conversation with the meda had been laden with tension. Now, Rébecca was the press's favorite. Franky had taught her to laugh and joke with them, and she liked the celebrity status and attention that came with being a young star. And anyway, for all her dad might say, life was more fun if you could laugh and be friendly with people. She couldn't see how he managed to be so reserved and stoic all the time.

"How does it feel to be the only Firaut on the équipe nationale?" repeated the reporter.

"It gives me a lot of pride to wear that name on my back every time I play," said Rébecca. "My jersey still says 'R. Firaut.' They were going to take the 'R' off, now that they don't need to distinguish me from my dad anymore, but I asked them to leave it on. It's an homage to him. He stood behind me during the strikes, and helped me fight for my spot on the team, and every time I kit up I'm honored it's his name I get to have on the back of my shirt.

"And you mentioned the équipe nationale—that's another source of pride. It's a privilege to get to put on the crimson, violet, and gold, and I think the whole team feels that. For me it's definitely super meaningful—obviously I wasn't always sure I'd have the chance to do that. So now, just being where I am, being a Firaut and being where I am—it's my heritage. It makes me happy that we still have someone from our family on the team—and it makes my dad happy too."

"You don't miss having him on the team with you?"

"Of course I do. But you can't live in the past. Being on the team with him last year, and before that, that was something that I think we had both looked forward to our whole lives. And we'll always remember those moments as something truly special. But right now, I'm just excited for the IAC. Thrilled to be preparing for another tournament, and I think the squad has something special this year. I've got a good feeling about it." Rébecca smirked, and it oozed confidence. She began to walk toward the street again.

The reporters followed at her elbows. "There were rumors coming from federation league staff today that you might not be returning to Reçueçn FC. Have you signed with another club?"

Rébecca opened her mouth, but couldn't think of an answer. She coughed, hoping to mask her obvious hesitation. "Uhm... any updates about my free agency, that is, any press releases, or, uh, news, you can expect... my agent will handle all of that."

"Would that happen to be why you were at federation headquarters today, to speak with club management?"

"I'd rather not... as I said, any questions about my contracts you can ask my agent. Sorry, I don't have time for any more questions." And putting her head down, she pushed past them.

Shit, Rébecca thought. How did they know? Is the news out already? She had indeed come to the FNRF building today expressly to finalize a new contract with Association Genève, the biggest rival of Reçueçn FC, her old club. The club had negotiated with her agent for a couple weeks, and it had sounded to Rébecca like a great idea. But she hadn't wanted the news to be public already. Yet I can't just deny it, she thought, or Genève will think I'm getting cold feet, or regretting it already. I need to get home and tell Maman and Papa about this already so we can let the cat out of the bag.

The FNRF building was in fact in the same neighborhood as the house where Rébecca lived with her parents. She strode hurriedly down the sidewalk, as if trying to leave her problems behind, but her troublesome thoughts scurried along after her. It was a beautiful summer day in the city of Reçueçn, but it was lost on Rébecca as her mind clouded over. She'd known that at some point, sooner rather than later, she'd have to break the news to her parents: that she had taken a new job, that she'd be playing for the rival team, that she'd be moving away. She'd wanted to find the right moment to do it—surely if she could've just waited longer, there would have been a day when there were no other errands to run, everyone was in a good mood, and they could all sit down and everything would turn out okay. But now she was stressed, and popping it on her parents would stress them out, and her mom would cry... well maybe, but definitely Rébecca would... and she could see the whole thing going wrong already.

In just a couple minutes, she had made it home. She paused outside the front door to take a breath. It's all in your head, she told herself. It's all going to be fine. Besides, I have some time to figure out what I'm going to say before Maman and Papa get home.

She let herself in and slipped off her shoes. She was about to go up to her room when she heard Gerauld's voice. "Rébecca? Is that you?" She forced a smile onto her face and walked back into the living room. Gerauld and Samantha were both sitting there, their faces looking strangely drawn.

"Yeah, Papa!" she called.

"Can you come here for a second?"

Rébecca cautiously padded into the living room. Standing there in before both her parents while they sat on the couch gave a weird dynamic. "What is this, the jedi council?" asked Rébecca.

"I thought you were with Chloé today?" said Samantha.

"Bah, oui. She had an errand to run so I came home early." Rébecca was glad now the reporters had accosted her earlier. This was beginning to feel like an interrogation, and it was helpful to have already been practicing her upbeat, reporter-question-fielding persona. Rébecca looked back and forth between her parents. Her dad's keen gaze seemed unperturbed by her mom's questions—he clearly had something else on his mind.

"Rébecca?" he asked. "I heard a rumor that you're moving to Genève. Is that true?"

"Gerauld!" Samantha turned to her husband as if to shush him. "What if it was supposed to be a surprise?"

"Then she should have told us before everyone else found out," said Gerauld. "We live with her. You'd think we ought to hear about it first if she was moving out."

Samantha turned toward her daughter with an apology in her eyes, but her eyebrows began to dip into a frown as Rébecca lingered in silence.

"Mais alors, Rébecca!" Samantha finally said. "Is it true!?"

Nothing for it now but to play it off, thought Rébecca. "Yeah, it's true. I didn't wanna tell you until I was sure, and we only finalized the contract just now. But yeah. It's true."

It seemed to Rébecca that her father's face fell as she confirmed the news. Yet when he answered, his words didn't match his expression. "I... We're... I'm very proud of you, Rébecca. This is a big milestone: your first contract as an adult, the first one you've negotiated yourself... the first time you'll be living outside of Reçueçn... you should be proud of yourself, too. It's remarkable the things you can accomplish. Of course we all knew that already." He smiled, sadly.

Rébecca bounced forward to give him a hug. If Papa said he was happy for her, then she, at least, could show her emotions. She found her grin returning, more easily now. "I'm so glad, Papa," she said. "Reçueçn FC's great, but they play so slowly, and for a striker like me, Association Genève is just the obvious choice. I'll be able to shine there... I'll be the new Franky! Oh, I can't wait to tell him! Just imagine the look on his face! He's going to be so happy!"

"I saw him at the FNRF today," Gerauld said. "He was pretty excited about it."

Samantha had stepped out of the room when Rébecca had hugged her dad, but she came back in now, holding a small box of cupcakes. "We got these to celebrate for you!" she said. "Signing your first contract yourself! It's a big day!"

Rébecca pulled a lemon cupcake out of the box and took a bite. "Mmm," she said, squeezing her eyes shut with delight. She did a little dance in the living room—a little twirl with the cupcake held aloft, posing like a ballerina. Then, grinning mischievously, she did a little booty shake and started beatboxing. She began to chant as she danced to her own beat. "I did it, I did it, Rébecca frickin' did it. Je rêve, je rêve, Association Genève."

Samantha smiled, seeing how full of joy her daughter was, and shimmied over toward Gerauld in time with Rébecca's chanting to offer him a cupcake. But Gerauld didn't seem to feel the same party spirit. He stood with his arms at his sides, his eyes locked on Rébecca.

"You'll be moving to Genève," he said. "I can't get over it. We'll have to start looking for a place for you as soon as you get back from the IAC."

"My agent said she could figure it out for me while I was out of the country," Rébecca called over her shoulder, her mouth full of cupcake. Then she let out a shrill cheer. "Youpie! Genève, here I come! I can't wait! Lakes, and mountains, and chocolate!"

Gerauld snapped. "How can you—" His tone was brittle, like nothing Rébecca had heard before. She froze, mid-beat, and stared at him.

Gerauld put a hand to his forehead. "I'm sorry, Rébecca. I'm happy for you. I'm just not feeling very well. I'm going to go lie down." And he rushed out of the room, leaving Rébecca and Samantha staring at each other.

UPDATESSSSSS!!!!!!

Over 78 million Marblelanians have arrived for the match against Calagsia, with some fans reuniting with their old, Chromatikan friends.

However, a scuffle, or more like a brawl occurred in the airport. Each accused the other of causing the brawl, so the cause is unclear for now.

Basically, just trying to be neutral on this, it all started when a Marblelanian and a Grand Exultian started insulting each others with slurs. Slowly, from a two man fight resulted into a war between hundreds of men, as each fan was trying to protect its countryman and country's fame. Chairs and luggages were flying, food were being thrown, it was absolute chaos. Even innocent tourists were targeted.

Marblelanian Football Association (MFA) has called this event shameful, calling the brawlers childish.

Meanwhile, the party was back in Chromia, where Marblelanians are back packing the streets. We have heard some complaints from Calagsian fans about Marblelanians' behaviour, but no one has been arrested thus far.

Now we head to our interviews:
Interview no.10??

Interviewer: So, the Yellow Monkeys are back from Drawkland after a scoreless draw. Still, incredible performances from the two sides. Love the ultras especially. Now, for today, we have our guests, Coach Joey Mulholland.

Mulholland: It's certainly good to be back.

Interviewer: And Jamal Marquez, one of Marbleland's best naturalised midfielders.

Marquez: Bonjour! Hi everyone.

Interviewer: For those who don't know, Jamal is of French descend.

Marquez: Except I am a little bit darker.

[all laugh]
Interviewer: Anyway, what can you say about your performance last match?

Marquez: Oh my, it is... terrible.

Interviewer: Ok, that was unexpected.

Mulholland: Haha.

Marquez: Coach, told us they are just some girls, they were fierce lions, my Gad.

Interviewer: Haha, so, Joe, you proud of your boys.

Mulholland: I mean, they did miss quite a few chances, but, I'm still proud of em', cuz I believe they did their best. Drawkland is indeed a tough team anyway, so, they definitely, did their best.

Interviewer: So, like usual, any extra lessons you can take from your previous matches.

Mulholland: Umm, I would always say, win your passes, if you can't score, pass, keep passing, and make sure you make good passes, good passes only comes when there is good teamwork, and good teamworks makes good passes and beautiful football, which creates chances. The more chances, the higher your oppurtunity to score.

Interviewer: Any other strategy.

Mulholland: Chaos, and ultras. That's all. And God of course.

Interviewer: Thank you for being with us.

Marquez: It has been a pleasure, sir. See you.

Interviewer: Good luck!

Aphrilia 1 – 0 Darwizzyuniverse
Forrestal a. 33'

THIS MATCH
APH STARTERS v Darwizzyuniverse: Kachel - Hosokawa, Haze, Christonson, Gillingham - N. Aston, Wallace, Rhine-Faust, Elliot - Forrestal, Villa

NEXT MATCH
APH STARTERS v Riandera: Karnwell - Knacke, O'Truffet, Paxton, Roberts - McKernell, Brentford, Rhine-Faust, Marshall (OOP) - Lacey, Meyer-Bertrand

Hendrick Meyer-Bertrand was feeling relatively usual today.

With Aphrilia's victory over Darwizzyuniverse on the second matchday of the group stages, The Anchors were able to secure a spot in the knockout rounds. As expected of the defending champions, of course. It would have been rather embarrassing if the result was otherwise. While the more defensive nature of the team throughout the first two games was something that many had taken notice of, no one seemed to be complaining. As long as the team was getting wins, all would be well if it ends well. Hendrick knew that well, and while he didn't play in the match against Darwizzyuniverse, he knew that the rest of the team shared that same sentiment. Of course they would, the final result will always matter.

Speaking of final results, the forward had come to terms with the finality of his reputation online. It had been during the World Cup when he became worried of what people thought of him being Nathaniel Rosberg's replacement, and while he has been doing pretty well, he knew that some people will never acknowledge it. And the resolution that Hendrick came to? That it would be alright. Ellie Saunders was right, she often was whenever helping others with social media stuff. The girl goes places online, and her advice for him ended up working out. Hendrick would let his own capabilities and performances do the talking, any unnecessary criticism he would cast aside like a single leaf blowing in the wind. It didn't matter, so why should he care so much? Hell, he even took up Ellie's advice and talked to Ines about it, seeing that she got a lot of hate early on.

Whilst he was indeed, called up as a replacement for Nathaniel, to Hendrick, Ines probably had the best story in regards being on the national team. She got a lot of flack due to the team's performance early on in it's existence (Doesn't particularly help that she was an ohia), but the older woman helped turn things around. In terms of legacy, he'd be willing to argue that Ines had the same weight in terms of her legacy as Nathaniel, though of course, the Foxian had a lot more to give for the national team. Despite already being married, to a fellow teammate in Phillip Karnwell nonetheless, she was not done with playing the game at all. She would settle down when she says she's done, and that was cool as hell.

Oh and speaking of cool, Ellie asked to hang out today. Just the two of them, and they'd have privacy.

She chose that they would hang out at a mall, said she wanted some new clothes. Hendrick didn't mind, considering he wasn't usually one to go to public spaces. The most he often did was just find a small restaurant or park, any less noteworthy establishment and settle there to kill free time. The full-back was very enthusiastic throughout the day, and even forced a smile out of him a few times. Of course, in exchange, she asked what he wanted to do. Hendrick just suggested to play at an arcade, but didn't expect her to accept the offer. They tried out a variety of games, and somehow won enough tickets to purchase a mini-figure for her. It was from a relatively obscure franchise but she liked it and that was enough for her, apparently. Before they headed back, the two decided to grab some food. Now they were there, at a Chicken GO Fast, eating fried chicken. They just picked randomly, and they were fortunate that the chicken tasted amazing, same with their signature cheese sauce. Ellie looks at him, rather amused.

"Did you have fun with me today?" She asked, delightfully taking another bite. Her face had a slight blush, but Hendrick chalked it up to excitement. "I think I did. You still trying to get everyone on the team to do something with you?" Hendrick responded, asking back. A sip of ice tea came right after, as Ellie nodded whilst eating. The mall was slightly busier than usual, but it wasn't full by any means. There were a lot of malls in Darlingtown, the one these two were in just one of the many. The girl swallowed down her food before talking back. "Almost everyone I've done something with! Except a few but Ashton's been the hardest, they're such a loner. Even a game of chess or something would be fine!" Ellie pouted. Hendrick just gave out a small laugh. Seems like she was struggling with a few select people on the team. As they continued to eat under the cold AC air of the indoor fast food chain, Hendrick just let time pass by. Being with Ellie right now was quite the soothing feeling, no need to worry about any sort of national team business or online drama.

And you know what? He was quite enjoying the time spent with her. So he'll make every moment and memory count, because it's just that nice.

Independent Associations Championship 25 - Group K - Matchday 2
Nieuweland 1 - 1 Choppyhausen
Curumba, HUElavia

Draw against Nieuweland
Another 1–1 puts Choppyhausen under pressure

Curumba – A must-win against the inexperienced Sky Blues: that, and nothing else, was supposed to be the objective of the Choppyhausen national team’s second group match. This much had been clear to everyone involved at Tuesday’s press conference. The opening match against Free Republics had already been an unfortunate affair, but the draw against the C°85 World Champions could still be dressed up with a host of explanations by the CFA board and the coaching staff: Free Republics’ home advantage, Frederiksen’s yellow-red card, the experienced opposition. None of those factors applied against Nieuweland. And yet, Choppyhausen once again failed to move beyond a 1–1 draw.

Coach Merrit made changes in three areas after the match in Basteon. Haferkreis replaced the suspended Frederiksen in central defence, while Oak and Caligaris came in for Bender-McKay and Iduna, both of whom started on the bench. Nieuweland, meanwhile, named Beenhouwer, Koch, van Hout, and de Zeeuw in place of Dijkstra, de Groot, Jansen, and van der Bijl.

The match at Curumba’s Estadio Nacional, its stands filled with expectation and awash in light blue and teal, began as anticipated. Choppyhausen dominated possession from the outset and applied consistent pressure on the opposition goal, but both Corte (off the post, 11th minute) and Lukeson (into the side netting, 14th) missed the early breakthrough. Nieuweland were not intimidated, however, and impressed early on with a strong tackle success rate in midfield. The Sky Blues’ first effort on goal, a shot from Beenhouwer in the 21st minute, sailed several yards over the Choppyhausen crossbar.

As the first half progressed, both teams continued to play on the front foot, with a slight edge in chances for the Team in Teal. Following a corner in the 29th minute, the ball fell to Caligaris, whose deflected shot was brilliantly pushed onto the post by de Zeeuw. Just before halftime, Nieuweland came close to taking the lead twice in quick succession: after a corner, Verhoek first failed with a header against Weiner-Kracht, then saw his rebound blocked on the goal line by Haferkreis (45+2). The score remained 0–0 at the break.

After halftime, Merrit introduced Iduna for Caligaris, a move that paid immediate dividends. Set up by Tyr, the substitute scored moments later with a looping effort that took a deflection on its way in, giving Choppyhausen a 1–0 lead (47’). The 23-year-old continued to energise the Choppyhausen attack, releasing Corte and then Lukeson in quick succession, but both were denied by de Zeeuw (52’, 55’).

Around the hour mark, however, Choppyhausen appeared to lose some momentum. What followed was a familiar pattern from the first half — only this time, Nieuweland were the stronger side. Koch curled a shot narrowly wide (62’), before a counterattack put Claasen through on goal. Nieuweland’s number nine pushed the ball slightly too far ahead of himself, allowing Weiner-Kracht to gather safely (67’). In the closing stages, Nieuweland finally found their reward: Bergwijn had space on the right flank and delivered a cross into the Choppyhausen penalty area, where Beenhouwer met it on the volley, leaving Weiner-Kracht with no chance. The equaliser made it 1–1 — a scoreline that remained unchanged until the final whistle.

Group K Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts

2 Choppyhausen 2 0 2 0 2 2 0 2
3 Free Republics 2 0 1 1 1 2 −1 1
4 Nieuweland 2 0 1 1 1 3 −2 1

The Team in Teal therefore remain in second place with two points and must now hope for a victory against group leaders Reçueçn, who have already secured qualification for the Round of 32 with two wins from two matches. Nieuweland, meanwhile, are banking on a Choppyhausen defeat; should that happen, a win against Free Republics in Basteon would send the Sky Blues straight into the knockout stage in their very first IAC.
Unentschieden gegen Nieuweland - Erneutes 1:1 bringt Choppyhausen in Bedrängnis

The Teutonic Order in Calgasia: Heal Others
Image

Teutonic knights? In Calgasia? With like medieval armour? Are we talking about the legendary unit from Age of Empires 2?

Well, no. Technically yes, but in reality no.

The Teutonic Order, or Deutscher Orden (aka Deutschritterorden), is a Catholic religious order that was formed in 1190 to aid Christians, especially Germans, on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals. Just like the other orders like the Templars and the Hospitalliers, it soon started to defend the zone against Islamic conquests, becoming a militar order. After the crusaders were expelled from the Holy Land, they established a state in the Baltic region, where they conquered vast portions of land and converted the Baltic peoples to Christianity. However, their harsh rule got the Poles, Lithuanians and Novgorod Rus angry, and they were expelled again, long story short. After that, it converted into a mere religious and honorary order, and it has kept it this way, at least on Earth.

However, things were different in Calgasia. After the discovery and colonisation started in 1916, the Teutonic Order was reestablished with its original purpose in mind, to offer medical aid and support to the settlers who were arriving in this new land. Thus, the Order moved away from the military or even pure religious mission to an NGO that aims to offer medical, spiritual and humanitarian aid in Calgasia and beyond, regardless of gender, race, or faith. In that regard, the Teutonic Order of Calgasia has more resemblance to the Red Cross or Médecins Sans Frontières than to the Earth counterpart.

Their Work
The Order acts as a medical-humanitarian, spiritual and educational institution. It has deep ties with the Catholic church, the Imperial Army, as well as the national health service. For example, the order has two units in the military, and the hospitals and daycare centres form part of the national health system through an agreement between this institution and the Ministry of Health.

The main work TO offers is medical assistance. Their hospitals and medical centres are part of the national health service, covering most of the fields, although they excel in first aids, first assistance, psychological and psychiatric care. The Order also offers medical and logistical response in emergency situations, epidemics or disasters.

As a Catholic Order, it also offers spiritual guidance and comfort, for people who are alone, grieving or in a personal crisis, especially in catastrophic events. This service is offered regardless of the confession or faith of the patient.

They also offer education services at all levels. They have Catholic schools across the country, often labelled as Maria-Schule, that cover all the academic curricula, from 6 to 17 years old. The Order offers tuition payments for lower-income students.
They also have a School of Medicine and a School of Theology in their headquarters of Marienberg, and faculties of Medicine, Psychology and Theology in the Melperk, Goldstadt and Fehervar universities.
The Order has as well social assistance programmes, such as care for the elderly and disabled in daycare centres and residences, and protection and care of children, especially those who are abandoned, abused or have lost their families, with the opportunity of having their academic studies covered by the Order.

Medical aid is the main activity of the Teutonic Order

Their Structure

Grand Master - Hochmeister Highest authority of the Order. Coordinates overall strategy, represents the Order before the State, and heads the Council.

Regional Prior - Regionalprior Responsible for an entire region. Oversees the medical, educational and spiritual network.

Local Magister - Ortsmeister Coordinates all activities of the Order in a locality, generally a city. Direct liaison between the prior and commanders.

Commander - Komtur Manages an area at a local level, generally a hospital, school or church. Can be medical, religious or educational commander.

Senior Brother/Sister Fachoberer Bruder/Schwester High-level professional (chief physician, chief psychologist, elite teacher) with an advisory and supervisory role. No formal command functions.

Senior Coordinating Brother/Sister Koordinationsältester Bruder/Schwester Experienced member who coordinates teams or shifts. May be in charge of a specific unit (operating theatre, school, logistics).

Brother / Sister - Bruder / Schwester The bulk of the personnel, they can be divided into Medical Service (doctors, nurses, paramedics, specialists…), religious personnel, or Social Service (teachers, carers, social workers, general workers…)

Novice - Novize Person in training. Participates under supervision. May be lay or religious, without the need for religious affiliation.

Volunteer - Freiwillig As the name implies, it is not directly affiliated to the Order, but helps it in one of its numerous activities. Does not necessarily require supervision from a superior.
Anybody, regardless of their faith, gender, sexual orientation, nationality or race, can join or volunteer in the Order.

Marienberg, the headquarters

Marienberg is the order's headquarters. Located in the foothills of the country's main mountain range, it stands on a promontory overlooking a narrow valley. Some rumours state that the headquarters is built upon a place where different energy lines converge, but scholars don't give credit to such claims. However, most of the visitors confirm that there's something special in the air around Marienberg.

Image
The renovated, state-of-the-art Marienberg Complex is the centre of the order, and includes a hospital, a daycare centre, a hospice and a residency, the offices, a convention centre, a vehicle depot, warehouses, a research lab, a theology and a medicine faculty, as well as housing for members.

Beyond Calgasia

The Multiverse can be a dark, difficult and painful place. Thus, the Teutonic Order offers its assistance to all nations of the Multiverse. Whether it's a temporal operation (due to an emergency, or a catastrophic event) or a permanent mission, you can rely on the Brothers and Sisters to help EVERY human being.
The Order is eager to establish permanent hospitals and centres all across the multiverse to help people, always in accordance with local legislation and with the agreement of the local ministry of health. Additionally, should your country suffers a natual or humanitarian catastrophe, the Order can send aid and rescue teams and establish field hospitals.
We serve others. The more difficult the situation, the more help we’ll send. The more dangerous, the bolder we’ll be. You can count on the Order.

Gavrina Vasilyevna Kumilyova didn’t always question why she or the rest of her comrades in Company Alfa did the missions and operations that they did, all supposedly “in service of the Pridnestrovian Republic.” Gavrina knew that she really should have been more skeptical and questioning of the things that she and her fellow operators had done, but the Pridnestrovian war machine had a way of drilling critical thinking and second-guessing out of anyone who served more than the 12-month minimum mandatory period. Then again, given that Gavrina had been pressed into service during the Second Great Patriotic War when the most important thing was simply to push back the Ixanian invaders and nothing else, there really wasn’t any room for second-guessing and such. But even after the invaders had been driven back and Gavrina had returned to the Armed Forces because she (along with a large majority of those who ended up serving in the Second Patriotic War) realized that she wasn’t that good at anything else other than warfighting, more often than not she ended up simply accepting her orders as they were given to her without thinking about why she was supposed to carry them out.

But following the operation in Recuecn City, the one in which Company Alfa broke into a bank and stole money in support of another heist conducted in the city by the Zimmer Private Military Corporation, Gavrina just couldn’t stop herself from thinking about what she and her squad had done. And yet it wasn’t even the idea of stealing that was giving Gavrina second thoughts about the operation in Recuecn. Instead, it was the fact that not only did she take a hostage during their heist but she also handed off said hostage to the Zimmerites and an unknown, uncertain fate. Gavrina didn’t know who Nicholas Courbet was or why the Zimmerites were so interested in him to the point that the PMC was willing to pay an actual cash bonus to Company Alfa if the latter could get their hands on Courbet during their operation. Gavrina didn’t really think much about it at the time, mostly because Zimmer said that they would pay for Courbet and Zimmer actually usually held up their end of the bargain. It was a big reason why even despite Zimmer’s reputation inside and outside Pridnestrovia as an organization that didn’t always follow the conventional rules of warfare, many units in the Pridnestrovian Armed Forces didn’t mind working alongside the Zimmerites so much. The bonuses that Zimmer offered to allied units for completing additional objectives was often much higher than entire months’ worth of pay from the actual Army, to the point that units were actually willing to put themselves at higher risk simply to get those bonuses.

Gavrina was more than willing to admit that she had fallen victim to the allure of the Zimmerites’ cash bonuses as well even though she was definitely much more financially well off than most other Pridnestrovian servicemen. She was not the child of an oligarch, but with her being the daughter of the commander-in-chief of the Pridnestrovian Navy, Gavrina was practically on that level as well. Heck, she had actually seen her own name on the list of sanctioned individuals from Pridnestrovia once the Rushmori nation decided to intervene in conflicts such as the Nordskanian Revolution and the Estorian Civil War. It was almost a badge of honor of sorts, the fact that Gavrina had made such a name for herself in these conflicts that the international community (or the Anglatian Empire at the very least) was throwing economic sanctions directly at her. Many of her fellow Pridnestrovians wanted to pretend that these sanctions did not actually have an effect on themselves or their country, but once again, there was a reason why many military units found it easy to work with Zimmer and their objective completion bonuses, and Gavrina Kumilyova was just another one of those.

Gavrina didn’t think much about why Zimmer was interested in some random Recuecian security guard or why they would actually pay so much money just to get their hands on him, at least not during the mission itself. But once she and the rest of Company Alfa had got on that cargo plane and the adrenaline worked its way out of her system, Gavrina began wondering about what Zimmer was going to do with the unfortunate Nicholas Courbet. She knew all about the mercenary company’s usage of convicts and prisoners during the conflict in Estorvipa and Estorpiva, and while there was no way in which poor Courbet could ever be defined as a prisoner or convict under Pridnestrovian law, Gavrina couldn’t help but keep thinking about the possibility that the unfortunate Recuecian guard that she had snatched up for the Zimmerites was now about to be press-ganged into the service of the private military company. It was at that point that Gavrina realized why her deputy Vyacheslav Ilyich Klimov had been so against the decision to take Courbet throughout the mission. There wasn’t anything that she could do about it now that she had handed the Recuecian over to the Zimmerites, and for the past four months, Gavrina Kumilyova had to admit that Courbet’s fate was weighing heavily on her mind and possibly even her conscience.

Gavrina had tried to not think about Courbet’s fate in the days immediately following the operation in Recuecn. But after Zimmer announced expanded operations in Esportiva, Gavrina couldn’t help but wonder if the Recuecian guard had found his way into one of the deadliest battlegrounds of the modern day. It didn’t help that unlike the other branches of the Armed Forces, Gavrina didn’t have contacts within Zimmer so she couldn’t exactly ask around like she was looking for an old friend. So, for the four months after the operation, she had to live with the possibility that she might never know what really happened to that unfortunate security guard, whether he was still alive or if he was now lying dead in some Esportivan field or some other country in which Zimmer had managed to plant a presence. And it probably would have remained that way had it not been for a chance meeting with one of the Zimmerites who was also in Recuecn on that fateful day.

Gavrina Kumilyova was eating lunch at a Western-style restaurant in the northern, cosmopolitan part of the Pridnestrovian capital of Tiraspol when she found the Zimmerite, or more accurately the Zimmerite found her. Gavrina was in the middle of a month-long furlough after completing her most recent three-month tour of duty with the Airborne Forces, the VDV, and was doing what she could to decompress after Company Alfa’s most high stakes operation in recent years. It was only during these furloughs that Gavrina was able to come back to Pridnestrovia, slow down, and take a look at how civilian life was doing. Most of the people that Gavrina had encountered didn’t act like Pridnestrovia was in the middle of not just one but two military interventions overseas. And for their part, none of these people even considered the possibility that she was in the military, not that Gavrina even tried to advertise that part of her life openly. Whenever she was out of the VDV, Gavrina didn’t want to be treated like she was any different from everyone else, and eating an expensive lunch at a Western-style restaurant was one way for her to act like she had never gotten into the armed forces in the first place.

Gavrina had gone for some lamb chops for her lunch, and she was halfway through her meal when she noticed, out of the corner of her eye, the reflection of a new arrival in the restaurant. He was a slender middle-aged man with gray hair and the facial hair to match, and he was wearing a black suit with an unbuttoned shirt and no tie. Despite his attire though, Gavrina could immediately tell that the man had a military bearing on him. She watched the man’s reflection as he scanned the restaurant, and then he began walking towards her table. Gavrina didn’t necessarily feel threatened by her approach, though she still kept her guard up just in case. She could never really tell with the damned Zimmerites. The man finally sat down opposite her and took off his sunglasses, confirming Gavrina’s initial assessment of his identity: Valentin Georgiyevich Mironchenko, the man also known as Zimmer PMC’s number two and Ivan Radchenko’s right hand man. “You’re a hard woman to track down, Wizard,” Mironchenko said to Gavrina, referring to her by her military callsign.

“I wouldn’t want to make it too easy for you, Arkan,” Gavrina replied, using Mironchenko’s own callsign. “You can’t expect to always have it your way.” Mironchenko nodded his head, seemingly conceding the point with a wry smile. “So, what brings you here to Komsomolskaya, Arkan?” Gavrina asked. “Not another operation, I hope. I’m on furlough right now so I literally can’t help you.”

“I’m not here for that,” Arkan shook his head. “I know that you’re off duty along with the rest of your men. However, I am here because of something relating to our line of work.” Mironchenko reached into his suit and pulled out a thick brown envelope that looked more like a package and put it down beside Gavrina’s plate. Gavrina took the envelope and opened it, revealing a large stack of money inside. And the money was made up not of hyperinflated Pridnestrovian rubles but of powerful and valuable NS dollars. Gavrina estimated that the envelope held at least fifty thousand dollars, worth literally billions of rubles in sanction-impacted Pridnestrovia. “This isn’t for me for the last time, is it?” Gavrina asked Arkan. “I’ve already received my cut months ago.”

“Indeed it isn’t, Wizard,” Mironchenko shook his head. “It’s actually for our mutual comrade Minuteman. He refused the money when I gave it to him, and I’ve been trying to find him ever since to see if I can change his mind. I’m surprised that Minuteman actually refused the money because I know that he has taken our bonuses many times before and without question, at least before our latest operation in Recuecn. Can you tell that I’m surprised that Minuteman hasn’t accepted his cut this time around?”

“I haven’t actually noticed,” Gavrina muttered sarcastically. “But seriously though, why are you giving Slava’s cut to me? What do you expect me to do with it? Don’t tell me that you can’t find where he is right now with your infinite resources?”

“Vyacheslav Ilyich has told me in no uncertain terms that he was going to kill me if I was ever to come near him or his wife, who is working for the anti-narcotics division of the Union Security Service, while he is on furlough,” Mironchenko shrugged. “And I do believe that Slava will actually act upon his threat, and I don’t want that to get in the way of our friendship. If we won’t listen to me, then maybe he will listen to you. After all, Wizard, you and Minuteman have been friends for far longer than my group has even been around.”

“Ugh, this is so stupid,” Gavrina said, softly rubbing her left temple. “Arkan, you know exactly why Slava is refusing this exact payment from your people. No matter how much you try to spin it, that security guard was not a high-value target. He never was and never will be, and that’s why Minuteman has an issue with it. He’s not going to take the money, especially if I’m the one trying to get him to take it because I was the one who insisted on taking Courbet so we could all line our pockets. And speaking of, what have you done to Courbet anyway?” Gavrina continued. “I feel like I really shouldn’t be asking that particular question to you, but I just can’t stop thinking about the poor bastard! He was just doing his job in the bank! He didn’t do anything to deserve getting abducted, did he? Don’t tell me he’s actually just a Recuecian version of you or that big guy who doesn’t speak much that’s also your right hand man! Because that would just suck.”

“Don’t you worry about that, Wizard,” Mironchenko replied. “Monsieur Courbet’s abduction has nothing to do with his past. I can tell you that this was at the request of a very special client. And if you’re really that worried about the man that you literally abducted for tens of thousands of dollars, I’ll let you have at least this assurance: we are taking good care of him. As long as he does what we want him to do, neither he nor you have anything to worry about.”

“That could mean literally anything!” Gavrina shook her head. “But if that’s your way of saying that I should keep my nose out of your business then fine! And you can keep your bonus because Slava is most definitely not going to take it,” she added as she pushed the envelope of cash back to Arkan. “And I won’t take it too. I’ve got myself taken care of.”

“Maybe you or Minuteman won’t take it, but perhaps your other comrades will,” Mironchenko said, pushing the envelope towards Gavrina again. Personally, I think either one of Horror or Coven is going to take this, no questions asked.”

“Of course they would,” Gavrina muttered, almost to herself. “Ivanich is always broke, and Arya can be a greedy bitch sometimes.”

Mironchenko looked at his watch in an overly theatrical manner, fully extending his arm in order to expose the silver band around his wrist from under his suit’s sleeve. “Ah, business calls for me once again, Gavrina,” he said as he put his sunglasses on and stood up. “Don’t let me keep you from your lunch, and please give my regards to Vasily Grigoryevich.” Mironchenko slid out of the seat across the table from Gavrina and walked out of the restaurant, and Gavrina saw that he had left the envelope of cash behind, right next to her lamb chops. She let out a long sigh and began cutting into her chops again. At least Nicholas Courbet was alive. At least she had that. But depending on what the Zimmerites were doing to him wherever he was, there was every possibility that death would have actually been a better fate for him.

Jirini Football: A Lost Cause Already?

Through just two matches, the player-coach Louissaint Toulouse is already starting to show cracks in his mentality.

"We ain't good enough to beat anybody." He told Cyprien DuVall after they took another loss and looked entirely toothless throughout it. "One shot on target through a hundred-eighty fuckin' minutes. It ain't workin'. This shit just ain't workin'."

The team's rallied around the defensive solidity they've shown by not letting up more goals than just the three they've conceded in the two matches they've played. The real issue is that the competition is just much, much higher than any of the team was expecting. The few matches they played prior to their debut were against lower-league sides from the Kamijiroan Football Pyramid, namely Ante-Premier side R.C. Trèves and Semi-Pro side Jarzé Town. Those matches were a little more competitive, with Louissaint scoring in both and Benny Giroux adding a goal of his own to win against Jarzé. However, again, these are not lower-league Kamijiroan sides that they're up against in the IAC. They knew that, but even then, they've struggled heavily to find any form of footing in their matches.

"Maybe we weren't ready for this," was what Violette Arceneaux told the lone reporter that had travelled with the team. "Maybe we would've been better off testing our footing against other sides at our stature. We're a tiny island that's competing independently from another tiny island chain. Sure, Kamijiro was what, eighth-ranked in the KPB at one point, doesn't change that we're not them and they're not us. Only one Jirini has ever made it to their main roster. The rest of us aren't even enough to make it to an APL side. That's just the reality."

The experiment to put Jirini Football on the map has been tough. Punched in the face on the first official match with a nil-two loss to Sel Appa, a match where Louissaint Toulouse was the only one to put a shot on target, a half-volley half-chance that nearly sailed in before being tipped wide. Then punched in the gut by a late winner from Josefine Vitagliano of Abanhfleft when it was looking so close to a first official point for the Jirini, leaving just Chromatika, the host nation, to face off against. To make matters worse, Chromatika still have things to play for - they need the three points. The question becomes whether or not the team will score a goal in their maiden voyage...

-

Background of Louissaint Toulouse, attaquant longiligne.

Louissaint spent most of the night thinking of his old man. Beauregard Lierre-Louissaint Maximia Toulouse Senior, his namesake. And the greatest footballing mind to ever make its way out of New Imperia, out of Jirinho and into the mainstream. He'd passed away in the middle of a training session - the years of treating his body like he could get a new one finally catching up with him in the form of a heatstroke at age forty-three. The side he'd been managing, Kanazawa Town, had just secured promotion to the Semi-Pro League days prior.

Beauregard hadn't been a great father. Louissaint (now age twenty) been born four years prior to the second-eldest child, Xainte, their first-born daughter (now sixteen). From there, the children just kept rolling. After Xainte came Madeleine (now fifteen), after that were the twins, Antoinette and Marquis (both now thirteen), then it was Xavier (now eleven), Alexandre (now nine) and the last one to arrive was Magurix (now six).

Beauregard raised his eight kids like he managed - strictly. Perhaps too strictly. Skipping school meant laps around the stilts that kept the house above the water-line, just in case the levees ever did end up failing and the floods inundated the marshes that they lived on. When Louissaint had been caught smoking one of his father's cigarettes, he had to spend the night outside on the porch. Which would've been nice if it weren't for the maringouin - large mosquitoes that breed in the slow-moving waterways that define Jirinho's rural areas. Louissaint was eaten alive that night until his sister Madeleine found an old mosquito net and gave it to him to hang up from the porch ceiling.

Those tough punishments suddently stopped when Beauregard took on a management role and left all eight of his kids in the charge of their mother, Athénaïs. He hadn't told a soul, just left a note, which translated from broken Jirini French into English to something like this: "Have new job. Will send money. Worry not. Will be home in summer."

That left Athénaïs to raise eight kids by herself. Louissaint quickly became a second parental figure as the oldest of the eight. That meant getting up early, making sure everybody had everything ready for school and then walking them all the way over to New Imperia like he was leading an army of pale, lanky kids into battle. That was four years ago now. There were mornings when he'd had to carry both Alexandre and Magurix to day-care while also carrying his backpack. Then, the news broke that Beauregard had collapsed and died in the middle of a training session. The money that had been flowing back to the Toulouse home suddenly dried up. So Louissaint went down to the docks and got a job.

When he first arrived at the docks, he was just seventeen. He just barely made minimum wage at the time and alongside Athénaïs' work as a day-shift bartender, they made just enough to scrape by and put food on the table for everybody. But it was at the docks that Louissaint began to come into his own. He filled out muscularly, got some tattoos and started playing football with the other dock workers. Then he understood why Beauregard had fallen in love with the game. He studied it obsessively. Nights were spent on the porch reading books about tactics. Training for players who wanted to score more goals. The pale skinny boy often called "maigrichon" by his friends became a filled-out (but lanky, his wingspan is nearly eight inches longer than his listed height of 6'4", he has a basketball player's dream body) goal-scoring machine, often times netting multiple goals per match against his co-workers.

By nineteen, Louissaint had joined up for a semi-pro club in Kaminho, the neighboring island. However, he ended up quitting and returning to the docks after learning that the family needed him more. He'd taken a paycut to follow his new dream of making it to the top of club football, but it was too much of a cut. At least, until now. Labor laws on Jirinho forbade Xainte from finding work until she was sixteen. She found a job to add a third income to the family and Louissaint was able to go back to playing football. However, Kaminho A.F.C. was no longer interested - they'd moved forward with a new striker, a more veteran presence that 'matched the team's timeline better.' So he got back down to the docks and kept training, waiting for his turn.

When word came out that the local sports association wanted to put together a squad for the IAC and eventually the World Cup, it seemed like a perfect opportunity for Louissaint to get his name out there again. So he was the first to sign up. And once it was discovered who his father was and how well he'd trained his body for this role, he was a shoo-in for selection. What he didn't expect was to be made manager of the side as well. He impressed the board with his tactical knowledge from those nights under the stars reading about football on the porch and they offered him the keys to the whole thing. Selection, management and playing. This way, they got to wash their hands of it a bit and Louissaint got to put his name out there once and for all.

When asked what his dream was for the Jirini, all he could do was give his toothy grin and say "To put us on the map. Officially. New Imperia, the bayou, all of it. We wanna be on the map."

And thus, the growing local legend of Louissaint Toulouse has begun.

Table literally flips after crazy matchday
Valentine Z 0-2 Saperetia

Coming off of a draw and into a match against the highest seed in the group is tough for anyone. But that was exactly the situation that our national team found themselves in, traveling back to the Millennium Dawn Stadium in Aphrilla for the second of three matchdays. This time, instead of heading out against the lower ranked Golden Harp, they went up against the number 6 Valentine Z. In their previous matchday, they also drew, against Solgavden, preventing either of the two teams making a breakaway run for now. We will see whether a result can be picked up here as the SPT 4-3-3 lined up against the VEZ 4-4-2:

Saperetia: GK Hranislav (C), DEF Abdelkader, Carloza, Damjan, Anatoliy MID Gil, Inget, Camilo ATK Jacques, Seppel, Seppo

Valentine Z: GK Marshall DEF Van De Hoogte, D'Elia, Sedláčková, Konstantinovich MID Polańska, Andika, Dániel, Sreynuon ATK Chiyumi, McMahon

The match came underway with a certain atmosphere to it, but noone was quite sure what it was, just what it was not, as the crimson goal came under attack from the beginning. Multiple chances from both of Valentine Z's forwards and a couple from their midfielders were narrowly missed. Very few were blocked or saved, which meant that one side was bad: either the defence wasn't sticking up or the attack was sending the balls into row Z. Of the nearest stadium. The Kittens' balls weren't leaving the stadium, which would've been nice if this was baseball, but this is football. So to conclude this string of sentences with a conclusion: Our defence was bad. That was apparently also clear to manager Silivia, who sprinted into the locker room for half-time with about five minutes remaining. Luckily, he didn't miss much as no injury time was added. Silivia's half-time team talks were feared by the nation, not for their ferocity, but because the team always came out worse. But this time, something changed. The Crimsonites turned into an attacking team for the first time in a long time, and decided to pound the Valentine goal, quickly leading to results. A turnover and quick break by Camilo sent the ball to a forward Seppel, who laid it back for Seppo to nail it top-left of the goal, providing our nation with the first goal and lead since the world cup qualifiers. Which were one and a half tournament ago. Anyway, to try and hold this lead, Silivia decided to bring in some of the fresh substitutes and subbed Carloza, Damjan, (CBs) and Inget (DM) for Simon, Ante, and Govind respectively. This seemed to keep the Kittens off of the inside of the goal, despite multiple attacks, and a lot of blocks and deflections that hit the net, just from the wrong side. This status-quo was kept until injury time, when a counter by Seppel and Camilo led the latter to score a 2nd goal against the group favourites, ending the match 2 for Saperetia, 0 for Valentine Z.

With the information that The Golden Harp won 1-0 against Solgavden, the immediate good news after the match was that we were now leading the group. The bad news that people realized was that our final match would be against Solgavden, in Solgavden, for everything. Our stakes are clear: A draw or better, and we advance automatically. A loss could send us out if a large goal deficit is accumulated and Valentine Z wins against The Golden Harp. For Solgavden, a win would put them in prime position to advance. However, this group is still completely open and any team can take any spot, including the elimination. This is the only group where this is possible, so an extra few eyes will be on the final two matches. When asked about this predicament, manager Silivia stated "We will focus on our destiny. Let others decide theirs."

(sadly the RP I was writing got deleted on my notes, and I don't have enough time to write a new one so here you go.)

The Narrow Bridge

The bridge over the Black Region was very small and wide enough for a single horse, but not an inch more. Sir Paul, riding from the North, met Sir Timothy, coming from the South. Both were very important knights on urgent quests. Paul had a treaty to stop a war; Timothy had the cure for a dying queen.

“Stop,” Paul yelled, his voice being heard in the distance. “I represent the King’s law, and every second I wait, blood begins to fall.” “I shall not,” Timothy responds, his hands on his hip. “I carry nations. To step back is to forsake them. My honor demands I pass first.”

Neither would move for the other. To turn back was a sacrifice; to let the other pass was to give up defeat. They sat there for hours, rotting in the sun. One hour passed, then another one. They spent each of the hours debating each knight’s so-called “status” and the importance of their journeys. They were too busy defending their dignity that they forgot about the urgency of their missions.

Five hours later, a little girl on a skinny donkey reached the bridge behind Sir Paul. She witnessed their standoff, the two men in silver armor, blocked by their pride. She didn’t argue. She didn’t ask for permission. She simply got off, led her donkey down the steep and muddy ridge to the shallow stream at the bottom of the gorge, and waded across. The water was cold, and the mud stained her boots, but within minutes, she was back on her way.

As she reached the top, she looked back at the knights, who were still staring at one another. “Is there something wrong, sirs?” she called out. “No,” Paul uttered, his throat filled with thirst. “Then why are you still here?” she asked before heading right into the forest. The knights looked at each other. The sun was setting. Somewhere in the North, peace was a mystery. Somewhere in the South, a queen had her final breaths. Those knights were still the “owners” of their spots on the bridge, but they were heroes of nothing.

Moral: Pride is a bridge that leads nowhere.

Match Commentary Transcript [One Sports Network Ch. 36]

Julius Rondon (23rd min.): "Vanburen rolls the ball to Rice. Rice takes it. He's dribbling into midfield. Now he passes it to Roben. What a nice turn by Roben with a man on his back. Roben progressing the ball forward, passes the ball wide to Nakijima. Nakijima takes it and is dribbling at his man. He beat him! Good movements from the Devontans so far. Nakijima crosses the ball into the box. This is dangerous. It's found the feet of Madrid who was barreling down the left wing. Will he shoot?! No! He passes the ball to Johansen. GGOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLAAAAZZZZOOO, Johansen. He scores from about 8 yards out and the ball hits the roof of the net just avoiding the crossbar. What a finish from the Devontan striker who subbed in for a injured Lamar Adams earlier."

Julius Rondon (28th min.): Benton under pressure. He passes the ball back to goalkeeper Vanburen. Vanburen looking for a open outlet to pass too. Vanburen finds his man. Juanmi has the ball. What a beautiful turn out of pressure by Juanmi there upon receiving the ball. Dribbling down the left side line. ABaconHair is catching up though. Ohhh he grabs Juanmi's jersey and he's pulled to the ground. Looks like he was about to pass it to Madrid. And the refree is pulling out his first yellow of the day. ABaconHair has been cautioned. He has to be careful the rest of the game.

Julius Rondon (49th min.): Ahmed has the ball. He is under allot of pressure from both NotJustBry4 and BadAtGames. Ohh nooo he losses the ball. Devonta is being caught in transition. Badatgames is currently driving down midfield with Ahmed in persuit. Ahmed makes the challenge! But Badatgames lobs the ball down the field for noobus! noobus manages to bring down the ball and Adeebo is in chase. He's infront of goal. The Devontan backline was caught sleeping. Noobus shoots! GOAL. Noobus. Aplha takes the lead. The shot tucked right into the left corner passed a sliding Juanmi and passed the outreached hands of Vanburnen. The Alphans are celebrating their equalizer. The Devontans have allowed them to rally back after a very good first half.

Julius Rondon (72nd min.): Noobus drives into the Devontan box. He is 1v1 with Rice. Juanmi is coming into pressure. What will Noobus do? He shoots! And its blocked by Rice and goes out of bounds for a corner. TheOtherNoobus will take it from the left side. Alpha have really settled into this game. TheOtherNoobus takes the corner. In-swinging ball to the center of the Devontan box. GOAAAL. NotJustBry4 scores with a powerful header. He managed to beat Ahmed to the header and Vanburen was caught in quicksand due to the balls placement. Vanburen had no chance. And would you look at that. NotJustBry4 now takes a yellow for ripping his jersey off during the goal celebration.

Julius Rondon (83rd min.): Devonta have really settled back into this game after Alpha took the lead. Wow! What a perfect tackle from Creasmen on TheOtherNoobus. He's won the ball. Creasmen on the dribble down the right flank. He passes the ball down the line to Amon, who just subbed in for Nakijima. Amon dribbling to his right crossing into midfield. He's outside the box, what will he do? And he shoots! AMMONNNNNNNN! What a cracker of a GOAL! From just outside the box. The Alphan goalkeeper was beat badly. The Devontan celebrate and Amon has just scored his 2nd goal for the national team!

Julius Rondon (87th min.): The Devontans are putting allot of pressure on the Alphans since their last goal. Madrid has the ball at his feet. LazarLazar is moving up to pressure him. Madrid tries to beat his man, but LazarLazar wins the duel. And a kick from Madrid sends LazarLazar to the ground. He looks to be in pain and is rolling. The referee almost instantly shows Madrid yellow. Madrid is still trying to argue his case to the referee but it looks like it will be to no avail. His teammates are pushing him back it seems so he won't receive a late red for decent.

SADEG, DRAWKLAND—For the first time in a long time, the Turtles, ranked 147th in the world and 34th in the IAC, are on the precipice of moving on to a second round of international football. Fans have desperately, eagerly awaited this moment. Three straight terrible showings in the World Cup Qualifiers for a former contender were an absolute embarrassment for the nation. Riots plagued the nation, unrest which culminated in the tragic assassination of late Federation president Gérard Duceppe. But a new era is upon us with the hire of now-former Royal Fizroe general manager Rockwell Bates and coach Walter Daviande. The duo have put together a solid team and solid strategy for this Independents Cup 25, completely turning things around, and setting up a promising future for the team.

This is the third appearance of the national team at this regional tournament. Having gone 1-1-2 and 2-0-2 the first jaunts, the team now rests undefeated with a win and a draw in hand. They first faced new team Jirinho here in Drawkland where the team has base camp, and saw a goal by Johnny Dong off a play in from Adam Bittler, and then a later goal by Antonio Rodriguez unassisted. Sel Appa fans were elated to open a tournament with a shutout victory, long overdue for the Turtles. The team then travelled to Chromatika to play the Anomalies in this milestone tournament featuring a record twelve hosts. An early goal by the home squad, ranked 16th internationally and 5th in the IAC, was not unexpected. However, the late equalizer by midfielder Ashin Pons certainly could have been. Fans erupted with joy then, and again at the final whistle, both abroad and at home. They broke out in song, which filled the stadium despite being a minority of the crowd, celebrating their team and new coach:

Coach, take these cleats from me
I dont need them anymore
Its gettin bright, too bright to see
I feel Im knockin on knockouts door

Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!
Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!
Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!
Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!

Coach, put my shot in the net
I cant shoot them anymore
That blue n yellow crowd is comin down
I feel Im knockin on knockouts door

Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!
Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!
Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!
Knock, knock, knockin on knockouts door!

Sel Appan fans are nothing if not inventive. The ditty followed with the ubiquitous team chant, Allez! Allez! Les Tortues! Donnez-nous beaucoup de buts! Anomalies fans seemed a bit disappointed they could not eke it out. The draw kept Sel Appa in second place, and poised to get thru to the Round of 32. The team now returns to Drawkland to play Abanhfleft, ranked 82nd in the world and 27th in the IAC. A draw alone would see them thru, but a win would go a long way. The team is projected to remain in second place unless Chromatika somehow lose to Jirinho, stranger things have happened. That means they will likely face Indusse, a strong side itself, ranked 35th and 11th. Going thru would be a victory enough for many, but this fresh team seems determined to go far.

Sudilia 4–1 Oscioru
(Nakajima 20', Bourne 39', 72', St-Onge 90+1'| Côté 79')
Grand Manchbury, Manchbury, Sudilia

Hot Takeaways From The Cold North

Sudilia once again have snatched victory in this IAC and are hitting their best ever stride in a tournament! Playing at home once more allowed the team to go on a 4-1 romp over Oscioru that secured the team a spot into the Round-of-32 with one matchday to go in the Group Stage. Here's the takeaways for today's game:

1. Bourne still has that touch
Daniel Bourne still shows why he is called upon by the National Team and why he still plays despite his age. A Brace today and quite a few attacks in the Final third of the pitch had Oscioru defenders trying to cover him all game to no avail. Some Sudilian Netizens made memes after the game, jokingly saying that once Bourne got home, he emptied his pockets to show his wallet, keys, phone and Rafael Caruso. Despite being substituted off during the match, he truly was the best player on the pitch today.

2. St-Onge is truly a player to watch
Bourne's substitute of the pitch for Adrien St-Onge seemed to be fairly insignificant, but the youngster really showed his impact on the pitch. Also attacking from the wings, he was able to get some shots in during the game, but there were blocks made by the defense that would prevent that chance. Until in additional time, where St-Onge would break past Ferraro to give a truly sublime goal to seal the game away and catch the attention of many people who were impressed by the short, but impactful debut.

3. This Team is one to watch
The Sudilia National Football Team has been one of the surprise packages of IAC 25 up to now. The team has the joint 3rd best offense in the tournament, only surpassed by heavyweights Tanirinthia and Edsmontik, who have more goals than Sudilia so far. The defense has been very strong so far, only having that one mishap of conceding the goal from Côté. While Sudilia is not a favorite to win the tournament, there's always a chance for all the teams participating, and Sudilia are chasing a better finish than what they had 16 years ago. Only time will tell if they can match and even surpass such a finish.

Saterun 1-1 Taxhavn
Almost there

The Lithico™, SoccerLand, Taxhavn

Report by Sixteen Bits v.26.1.103s, Sports Editor Edition

Luis Glücki hit a late late late late so so late equaliser against former champions Saterun to leave Taxhavn just a draw away from the knockout stages with Woodsmere to come next. Crespo Antonsen had put Saterun in front after 15 minutes, a far post tap in from captain Hans-Jürgen Becker's deep cross which eluded Victor Van Drop. There was little else of note in this game between two sides who have yet to really hit their strides until the ninth minute of injury time, when your man Super-Zubi Zuberbühler unselfishly squared in the box to Glücki when he was on for his own record of scoring in five consecutive IAC tournaments, but could see Luis would have an open goal at his mercy and set him up sweetly just for that. One more guaranteed opportunity to secure that record, but you'd have to say the Shillingmen will fancy their chances of making it to the round of thirty-two at least in this enlarged post-WC100 super-competition of 10,000 entrants.

The final game of the group stage sees Taxhavn take on Woodsmere at The Lithico™ knowing they just have to match the Friendship Island's result against Saterun to be sure of a place in the knockouts, though the Shillingmen will win the group if they better Saterun's result - and a win should in theory help secure a better draw in the knockouts. In theory. All to press for.

The Totalitarians: Axis Against The World

Part 3/5 in a series

A special feature by guest writer Sixteen Bits v.26.1.103p, Political Correspondent Edition

There is no more obvious place to start with a politics-meets-football story than Axis Driessche, up in the north-west of the island. Known as die Totalitaritsen and infamous for their 'Shocktroopers' ultras group, the club from the rather grim industrial town of Driessche - one of those places that put the 'made' in 'Made in Taxhavn' - burst into brief international awareness with a rare appearance in the top flight four seasons ago. The 'troopers started a riot in the Commonwealth of Baker Park during their Liga-B qualifying round tie against Leiderkranz Ladies SC - very unbecoming - and smashed the place up wherever they went that season. What really got them in trouble were two evenings of ill-repute against their bitter rivals, 1860 Delénacht, when they really set the towns on fire. Despite finishing comfortably above the relegation zone under coach Nelo Holzer, were relegated by default to the third tier and have been banned from promotion for ten years. Axis were owned by inflammatory chemicals magnate and political agitator Florentius Keusen, although their political leanings had drifted well toward the extreme right for some time before that - which is probably what attracted him. Founded by notorious fascist Pietje Ravers-Ijslaag at the turn of the last century, when such fascination with monolithic authoritarian modernism was highly fashionable, somehow Axis had persisted as a pro-totalitarian club through a general decline in popularity of the dictatorship model when it became obvious that the benevolent and benign types just didn't seem attracted to the role, and the jobs always went to lunatics like Ravers-Ijslaag.

At the other extreme were the factory team that broke away from their employers, unionised, and formed their own club. Just up the road from Driessche, in another tough factory town of Delénacht, the 'Commies' at the Plotinus Eboriuson-Joulon factory took their work mates out on strike for better pay and conditions, formed their own team, 1860 - in commemoration of the famous Delénacht Workers Riots - and a natural enmity was born. Especially when Axis fans, the precursors to the Shocktroopers, organised to break the strike. One hundred years later, Florentius Keusen is drawn to the history of Axis, buys the club, and starts the hardcore fighting all over again. Keusen offended everyone in the Directors Club and beyond, getting his team a double demotion and a long ban.

Unrepentent in his first year at the third tier, Keusen insisted he would lawsuit his way out of trouble and urged his Shocktroopers to keep fighting for 'justice, affluence and The Taxhavnite Dream'... whatever that even means. The 'troopers didn't care - they only needed half an excuse to riot especially as they were joined in the division by another double relegation team in the same season with deadly political and football rivals 1860 Delénacht. The left-leaning club from just up the road were being punished for the unthinkable in Taxhavn: going bust. That first year down in Lig-3 was a complete nightmare. At the end of the season, FA-Tax took radical action, adding another five years to the promotion ban (meaning Axis won't get out of the division until season 106, minimum), with complete expulsion from the league suspended for the next three seasons subject to good behaviour, and the enforced removal of Florentius Keusen from club operations - at Axis or anywhere else in football - for five years, with a further five years suspended. He's still the owner, of course, but he can't go near football.

Not that it's prevented him from getting his irrational Taxhavnite Dream - the 'META' message - well and truly on the table.

Part 1 - The Man From Latbach
Part 2 - The Ranger
Part 3 - The Baron
Part 4 - What Happened in the Woods

A Lead in Brunnenfels
The report from Detective Lionel Baumann quickly made its way up the chain of command, and the issue quickly became greater than Lionel had expected. Forensics experts were brought in to take a closer look at what had happened to Ranger Nils Griessen, but came away with no more than Lionel had established at first glance. Griessen had been killed by gunshots from the front, they said, a claim based largely on the bullet they found embedded in his seat.

The investigation into what exactly had been going on at the scene of the crime turned up more questions than answers. Griessen had clearly stumbled upon the entrance to an illegal logging operation in its early days, evidenced by the lack of any actual logging despite the amount of heavy equipment left behind. The equipment left behind, a likely first lead, had proven difficult to crack, with serial numbers and IDs nowhere to be found and the leadership chain in turmoil as the Teiningen government reckoned with the loss of its leader.

The assassination of the Baron Teiningen, for all its brazenness, did have one thing going for it: the turmoil it caused hampered the Teiningen government’s ability to act on all levels. With few commands coming from the top and the highest leaders of the state government focused on finding a political solution, departments within the Teiningen Justice Agency and the other elements of Teiningen government acted on their own, with little access to additional resources. The Osnari legislature’s decision to put the state under martial law, three days after the incident, was already too late.

The TJA’s failure to apprehend the Baron’s shooter had been part of the decision. Distracted and cut off at the head, the Agency had accomplished nothing, produced no leads. The only information known about the killer had come from a report in the Latbach Gazette, stating a resident of the area had spotted one Simon Brun in his car, speeding away from the woods where the Baron had been hunting. Brun, a notably skilled hunter known to his neighbors and the townfolk as a logger, was the only connection most Osnaris needed between the strange killings in Teiningen on that September day.

As Teiningen Chief Detective Sophia Schwarz sat in her office, she reflected on the last four days. The Baron’s killing, discovering the logging operation, the Gazette report. With the Osnari legislature declaring martial law yesterday, the TJA finally had its head out of its behind and had put together some attempt at an actual manhunt, doing its absolute best to chase down any leads. Overeager residents had already made several reports, and Schwarz surmised that each would turn out to be a wild goose chase.

Caught in her reflections, Schwarz checked the time. 4:22 PM. It was time to brief the Director on the day’s happenings, though Schwarz would be staying much after 5PM tonight. The investigation left much to be done.

As Schwarz walked down the hall, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around, spying a face she recognized, but only because she had seen him walking the hallways of the TJA. “Sorry to bother you, Mrs. Schwarz, but I found something I think you’d like to see,” said the intern, clearly a little nervous.

“Is it something I have to see before I brief the Director, Mr…”

“Halvarson, ma’am, and yes, I think it would be worth seeing first, if it’s alright with you. I mean, I think it’s pretty important. What do you think?”

Schwarz looked at the intern for a second, slightly confused. “Just show me whatever it is.”

Halvarson produced a cell phone from his pocket, opening it to show a video playing on one of the popular social media apps. Halvarson rewound it to the start. The video showed a man narrating talking in his car in what appeared to be a forest. “I’m here in rural northern Teiningen,” he said. “Trying to get a lead on the greatest true crime story we might ever know. I’m taking a look at things, talking to locals, seeing what I can find. For the last few days I found nothing. But today I found myself in the small town of Brunnenfels, where the closest thing is the Grafling border, and even that’s hours away.” The video cut quickly to Brunnenfels on a map. Schwarz’ curiosity was piqued. She didn’t know who this man was, but only a few hours ago she had sent a detective to Brunnenfels to poke around in the town after a potential tip on the Simon Brun case came in from a resident. This man, it seemed, had stumbled upon the right place.

“So I’m doing my usual work, going door to door, asking what people have seen, anything interesting. Everybody’s heard of Simon Brun and the assassination even up here, but nobody actually knows anything. Of course. But eventually I talk to this guy, and he has a wild story to tell. So he’s a hunter, right, hunts for fun. He goes hunting a ways away from here a few months ago in what’s usually a pretty good spot, but on that day he finds… nothing. Nothing at all. It’s not that unusual, but as he continues deeper into the forest he begins to hear some noise. He keeps going deeper, crosses a stream. The noise gets louder. And louder. Eventually, he stumbles upon something.”

“I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures from the logging operation that got busted down south that may have been connected to the Baron’s killing. They hadn’t actually done anything, yet. What this guy found was massive. Insane. Miles and miles of trees cleared, deep into the forest, just south of the Grafling foothills to avoid any bad terrain. Most of you will know, pretty much all of Teiningen is protected land when it comes to logging. The forest are a national wonder, old growth wood, et cetera. The point is, logging is illegal in most of Teiningen, but somebody is doing it on this ridiculous scale. Something is not right here, guys, and I think it has a connection to the Baron’s killing and to the other operation tht was going on down south. Something is really fishy, and I’m going to find out more about it. Next time, on the Sepp Keller Report.”

The video gave Schwarz a pang of anxiety, and not only because she was not going to be late to briefing the Director because an intern wanted to show her a short-form video. Something about that video scared her. Something was not right. She needed to take a look.

As Schwarz processed all of this, all she told Halvarson was “Thanks. That’s interesting. I’ll take a look at it.”

She then continued through the TJA building. It was already growing dark, but the complex was as populated as ever. Very few TJA staffers remained on normal hours. The Director was frustrated, and demanded more work from everyone at the TJA. Rightfully so, Schwarz thought. They needed to get this thing solved. That just might turn out to be trickier than they had thought.

Upon reaching the Director’s office, the frustration was written all over his face. TJA Director Reto Baumann had a lot to do, and wait for his underlings to finally show up was not one of them. “Where the hell have you been? I hope you have something worth the ten minutes of my time you’ve been wasting.”

“Good evening, sir,” said Schwarz. “I’ve sent out detectives to the towns of Brunnenfels, Eichdorf, and Talheim, among a few other small towns and homesteads. We’re getting reports from all over; most of them are just chaff. Overall it’s pretty worthless right now, except for Brunnenfels. Sir, we got a report like any other. A man resembling Simon Brun driving a silver car, tearing through town, apparently on his way north.” Schwarz hesitated.

“Well, what makes this different?”

“You’ll laugh, sir, but a short-form video an intern showed me.”

“What the fuck.”

“Sir, we already have a detective on the way. Whatever he found, we’ll find too. But this guy posted a video. Sepp Keller? He’s some sort of true crime influencer and he found himself in Brunnenfels. I’m not sure why. But he went around asking questions and one of the people he supposedly asked said he’d stumbled upon what seemed like a large-scale illegal logging operation. Like what would have happened had that ranger not spotted the one close enough to Latbach.”

“God. Okay. Interesting. Well, let’s see what the detective finds. See if you can get your man to link up with this guy and see if he’s not just blowing smoke. I assume he is. If he isn’t, we’ll figure it out from there, but it’s in our interest if he stops posting for the time being. Who showed you the video?”

“Halvarson? I didn’t know the name.”

“Have him send me the video.”

“Yes, sir. I should have more to report by tomorrow.”

“Great. Best of luck.”

THE LAST DIPLOMAT
Chapter Eleven - Forced Holiday

Some are always on holiday, some book holidays, and some have holidays thrust upon them. After waking up in the hospital Sebastian had little choice in the matter, the doctors and the welfare officer were very firm on the matter, not to mention the ashen faced assistant who had come in the morning to discover him passed out and in their panicked state unable to get a pulse thinking they had in fact stumbled in on my dead body. I may have been able to stiff upper lip the doctors and welfare, but seeing their face he realised he could do that to them. So he found himself unexpectedly with nothing to do, after getting some fluids the doctors sent him home.

For the first week it seemed all the midnight oil that had accumulated needed to be burned off, as he slept through most of the days as the layers of tiredness he had accumulated began to be shed. He did check in to what was happening in the department and with bittersweet pride, everything appears to be carrying on just fine without him. Happy that he’d done his job in training and building the department, but maybe just a tiny bit sad that he wasn’t somehow an irreplaceable part and realising perhaps it shouldn’t have taken him collapsing for this to happen.

It had been a drab 1-1 draw in Taxhavn, as the top two sides of the group split the points between them. Crespo Antonsen had provided the Claws with their only goal, in the 15th minute, and now the race for Round of 32 qualification was tight. With IAF's victory over Woodsmere, it was impossible for Saterun to get last in the group, but if they lost tomorrow they'd be likely third and probably wouldn't qualify for the knockouts. It had only been two cycles ago when the Claws had crashed out of IAC 23 in the group stage, and Handrix knew the SFF still remembered it. That had cost Bradley Kemmer-Lascelles his job, and although Handrix had bought himself significant security with the Cup of Harmony win, he didn't want to get back on the SFF's bad side. It wasn't all gloom and doom, however. Saterun still sat joint-top of the group, hadn't lost yet, and although the offense was still walking, the defense had been very good so far. Handrix would play it safe in the beginning of the next match, and probably keep the standard starting lineup, but he wasn't afraid to shake things up if he needed to. The expanded tournament this year added another game to the schedule, meaning that a big part of any winning strategy would be rotation. Handrix had fantastic depth in some positions, and wasn't hesitant to use it.

In the locker room, he gave a quick rundown of the game, from the staff perspective, before trying out something new for this tournament. He always welcomed player feedback and observations, but it had usually been informal, just a stop by the office or text message. Now, he wanted to give them a time to express whatever they noticed, immediately after matches. He opened up the floor, and the first sentence caught him off guard right away. "We lost in the middle." It was Vidar Washington, Handrix's main midfield man. Handrix knew Washington had a high football IQ, but from the sidelines it looked like the Claws had done fairly well in the middle. Vidar elaborated. "We had some decent passing, but they won every toss-up ball. We were also chasing them the whole time. I think if we control the ball a little more, we'd control the tempo more." The squad nodded, and a few other players chimed in. Interesting. That was exactly why Handrix had instituted this practice in the first place: to see what couldn't be seen from the touchline. Given the support this observation seemed to have, the staff would definitely be taking a look at it in their match tape review.

The next day, they sat on the training ground in the last pre-match full session before the game against Filis-Indos Friendship Island. It was going to be an important match, and Handrix didn't want to tire his players out too much. For the final half an hour, they'd just be doing some light passing drills. Passing was the cornerstone of how they played, and Handrix wanted his team to be the best at it. If they could keep the ball, they could run the match. It also helped him identify new tactical ideas. For example, he had learned that Matt Saez was a very adept passer with good vision, and so now often pushed the centerback up into a defensive midfielder role when the Claws had possession. As the cycles passed, Handrix had started to adapt a much more fluid style of football. The team he had inherited had been used to Kameron Boyd's rigid formation, but now they were starting to play a little more freely. Not that one was better than the other (Kameron had been wildly successful with his rigid tactics) but with the group of players that Handrix had now, it made more sense to be a bit more liquid. Handrix watched as his players drilled passes to each other across the training pitch. Suddenly, he heard a cry from out across the field. He looked over and saw Hans-Jürgen Becker holding his foot.

As the coaching staff got over, they learned that the veteran midfielder had twisted his knee attempting to hit a pass. A couple minutes later, the physios were able to confirm that the injury was not serious, but Becker would probably miss one or two games. Handrix knew what this meant. Sülimein Kalemanu would have to start against Filis-Indos. Truth be told, Kameron was already planning on bringing him on as a substitute, but now he had no choice but to start him. For a player who had been highly praised for his potential but had yet to secure a starting spot, this could be a vital game. Handrix also planned on bringing on a few other young players, including Edvin Nyquist, who had yet to play a minute for the national team. In fact, the young Tsear AC midfielder hadn't yet played even a minute of professional football, being called up to the AC first team just this current summer. However, given the crisis of a lack of depth at the center midfielder role, Handrix had decided to give him a shot. Hopefully, a mix of youth and experience could pull them through the final group stage match.

In the staff offices at the temporary training ground, Handrix and his coaching team reviewed the game footage. They saw what Vidar had mentioned, but another thing caught Handrix's eye. Every time Crespo Antonsen was about to make a run, whether with the ball or without, he shifted back onto his trailing foot before hitting a burst of speed down the line. After they finished watching the game tape, Handrix dug out a couple of old highlights he knew had Crespo in them. Again and again, he shifted back before sprinting down. Sometimes, it gave him an extra step of space. Other times, however, if the defender knew what was happening, it made Crespo unable to beat him in the sprint. It was especially damaging in a few instances where Crespo had the ball, as the combined backstep and extra time to control the ball meant that he sometimes lost it when a direct acceleration probably would have been successful. Handrix didn't know if this was a conscious decision or just an involuntary movement, but he'd have to talk with Crespo about it. This was exactly why Handrix valued match tape so highly. It was the best way he'd ever found to improve the team.

Part I

It was raining again. That seemed to be the norm here, but he could get used to it. It wasn't like the capital was any sunnier, anyway, just that the clouds there didn't have the habit of dumping their contents on unsuspecting civilians. At least this time, he'd brought an umbrella. That was a wise purchase, after having to walk halfway across the island in the pouring rain, after that conversation he had with that strange young person yesterday. He wasn't going nearly as far this time, but it was still half a kilometer to the library, and that's enough to get drenched.

He wasn't expecting much - after all, this town was insular in more ways than one - but even so, it was smaller than he had expected. Two rooms, half-full shelves, and the books on it were mostly local histories. Still, though, he was able to find some fiction, which he desperately needed. He couldn't read the news anymore.

Sitting there in that strangely upholstered chair (it was covered in an irregular pattern of puce and lime green, which was certainly a choice), flipping through the pages, reading the text on them but forgetting it the moment you turn the page - that made a lot of time pass quickly, if not productively. As he was on page 290 of his third pulp novel of the day, however, a voice brought him out of that flow state.

"Hey!" It was that person with the oversized red poncho again. What was their name? He knew he hadn't actually asked them it.
"Oh, it's you." Great start, he thought, his inner thoughts reminding him that tone was something that mattered only after the words had come out of his mouth.
"I was hoping for something slightly less rude, but that'll have to do. How are you taking the pace of life here? Out-of-towners like you often find it a bit too slow for their tastes, but in my opinion, it's great. Then again, I live here. But I digress. It's your opinion, not mine."
"It's fine. To be entirely honest, I definitely wouldn't mind living life a little slower for a while. Nanwacj is far too fast for my taste, and that's the only place I know well."
"Oh, so you're from the capital? We're 'onored to have this hot-shot big-city man coming to our 'umble island, and if there's anything you want us lessers to do, just shout and we'll to it, alright?" Over the course of speaking, their accent grew thicker, to an extent that it was nearly unintelligible, but it was clearly fake from the start.
"Wow. That is a lot of resentment."
"Well, the king doesn't care about us, blessed be his name and all that. Why should we be grateful?"
"You do realize saying that is breaking several laws, right?"
"Who are you to go around talking about law and order? Look, mister Nanwacj hotshot, there's only one possible reason that you could be here of all places, and we both know what it is - you're on the run. Hiding from who, I don't know, and I don't know if you have the king and his puppet government mad at you or something else, but you're certainly not in Nanwacj's good graces. Besides, the laws aren't always enforced here." The tone coming out of their mouth was something he certainly hadn't expected.
"Ouch. I'll just say that the reason I'm here has nothing to do with the king or his laws."
"I'm not going to ask further questions - you should've gotten what I'm saying through your thick skull by now. Let's talk about something more pleasant, like the weather."
"The weather? How exactly is that pleasant?"
"It's more pleasant than what we were previously talking about."
"Point taken. I'm not sure I love the weather here, but Nanwacj isn't much better. It's all clouds, all the time."
"Tell me more about Nanwacj. I've never been."
"Well, the buildings downtown are bigger than you could ever think of, and the spire on the Twerril Tower gets lit up at night and it's so bright you can see it for kilometers all around..."

It was hard to skirt around the parts that brought up bad memories, but he still thought he did a pretty good job of being a verbal tour guide for this stranger, whom he had been meaning to ask something - ah yes, their name.

"Well, thanks for telling me all about the city you called home. I ought to tell you more about here sometime."
"Tomorrow? Oh, and by the way, what was your name?"
"Sjashoom. Yours?"
"Thuraand. Charmed."
"You really are a fancy Nanwacj gentleman. I'll see you tomorrow."

The sun was setting at this point, and they parted ways. Thuraand took one last look out the window, to see if the downpour had stopped. Nope, still raining.

The Bolton Gambit

Marvin Bolton's gambit appears to have worked, at least, temporarily. Margaret can change the outcome of any tournament run when she feels like it, but in the moment, she spared the Dhemixians of getting grouped from pot two for the fourth straight tournament. No, Bolton didn't score in the 2-0 win over Indusse to clinch a spot in the Round of 32, but he did something greater than himself in the process.

As previously stated, Marvin Bolton is the only member of the Dhemixian National Team who knows the whole story. Now, it wasn't of his own volition that he was gifted the ability to seemingly converse with the oddsmaker herself, but he does choose to use that power with humility. No part of a managerless national team should have punched their ticket in two games through the group stage, but that's the key for the Dhemixians. With Marvin Bolton arbitrarily decided as the new interim manager, the Serpents may be the only team in the multiverse who are significantly better without a manager than they are with one.

In not having a definite manager, Marvin Bolton becomes the best manager the team could ask for.

Up 2-0 in the exact same situation against Indusse as they were against Devonta, Marvin Bolton once again contemplated subbing himself in. Realizing they still were playing a pot 1 side that very well could come back from a 2-goal deficit, he was of two minds about the decision. Every time he convinced himself he should go in, Indusse would get a call their way. Trotting over to the sideline, Dominic Sanford was given a yellow for a foul right outside his own box. Turning around to go back to the bench, the forward skied it into the stand. Marvin Bolton was being given a sign, and he decided not to press his luck further. That's how you get grouped.

Dhemixia would end up holding on due to an excellent finish off the boot of Grant Clarke early and a penalty conversion from Gregory Baker directly after the half.

The thing is, though, getting grouped isn't what Marvin Bolton was afraid of. He'd heard the rumours that Dhemixian teams get grouped way too often, but he knew what all who pass that mark were destined to do: lose the next knockout game. That's why he was staring at Margaret. He put the knockouts into her hands, understanding that's the only chance the Dhemixians would ever get at finally winning one.

Many a Dhemixian team learn the eventual lesson that hubris against Maggie catches up to you. That's why they're serial bottlers, in the same tier (although not as prolifically) as Eastfield Lodge's follies in the World Cup.

Only now has Marvin Bolton come to terms with that fact.
It's empty.

Fuck

It just seemed that whatever can go wrong, did go wrong in this game. After their 1-1 draw against group favorites Valentine Z, the Solgavish were confident in their chances against The Golden Harp. They last played The Golden Harp in the last edition of this tournament, IAC 24, which ended in a 4-0 victory for Solgavden, one of their biggest wins at that point. More recently, the Solgavish National Hockey Team beat The Golden Harp in a high scoring 7-4 game, despite being the clear underdogs. Suffice to say, most Solgavish people were expecting to win at the least, with the main question being by how many goals. During Nordstjärna TV’s pre-match coverage, a panel of pundits predicted Solgavden to win by at least three goals, with the sole voice of dissent coming from Prince Frederik, younger brother of Queen Sophia, who predicted a 2-2 draw. He was promptly heckled by the rest of the pundits, but backed himself up by saying that the Solgavish team was missing several key pieces, including midfielder Leo Stenberg, and substitute forwards Marco Kurosawa and Oskar Rosendahl, who has been known to inject life into the team late in the match. Most importantly, the team’s offense, which is usually their greatest strength, seemed more like a liability during their last match against Valentine Z.

”Seemed more like a liability than their strength”

When goalkeeper Gunny Kristoffersan caught that clip of the show as he was getting dressed, he just dismissed it as another wildly misguided prediction from His Royal Highness. Yet at the 30’ mark, those words rang in his head as the offense before him failed to put much together. The team started off sluggish, which is very uncharacteristic for a Charlotte Erlandsan run offense, almost as if they were playing with their food. Worse still, a few minutes prior, center back Kennet Roenfeldt brought down an opposing striker with a hard tackle as they zeroed in towards goal. Roenfeldt was expecting a yellow for his actions, which he was willing to sacrifice if it meant the goal was saved from danger. He had done a similar move in the previous game, stopping Elisabetta Enzo Hannah Lodovica D'Elia from scoring a game winning goal. The referee reviewed the infraction using VAR, and changed his original yellow to a red, bewildering most in attendance, and shocking Roenfeldt most of all, who tried to protest, but was quickly shooed away as the referee signaled for a penalty. Kristoffersan saw Roenfeldt head back to the bench with his head down, as the Solgavish dominant crowd rained down boos and jeers towards the referee, who in turn threatened further action if the crowd didn’t calm down. Once the stadium quieted down, Paul Johnson lined up to take the penalty, which Kristoffersan caught after reading his stance, and diving left in response. Pain shot up his leg when he landed, and he swore to himself as he got up. The hamstring sprain he sustained during WC100 qualifiers has healed up enough for him to play, but it seems like years of wear and tear was starting to catch up to him. As he turned back to the field, he saw captain Sig Halvorsan looking back at him, with a look of concern on his face. "That lucky bastard", Kristoffersan thought to himself "He could probably keep playing until he’s 50." Kristoffersan gave a thumbs up to signal he’s okay, but his leg and hip were still radiating pain.

The loss of Kennet Roenfeldt dealt a massive blow to De Rega Röda. He was by far the team’s best defender (no offense to Rikard and Johan), and his leadership helped to guide the defense, and the rest of the team as a whole. There was still a lot of clock left, but the team was confident that they could win with just six men, nevermind ten. The team changed to a 2-1-3-3, with midfielder Alex Braun dropping back into a CDM role to help reinforce the defense. To their credit, the Solgavish managed to hold back The Golden Harp for most of the game, but they were relentless, eager to strike when their opponent was weak. After a lapse of coverage (that Roenfeldt must’ve been fuming at), Both Paul Johnson and Garbhan Watt ran towards the goal undefended. Unfortunately, even though Kristoffersan is pretty agile, he’s not as agile as he once was, and a simple pass from Johnson lined Watt up for a shot that saw The Golden Harp lead the Solgavish 1-0. In a weird display, the stadium was eerily quiet after the goal, as if you could literally hear a pin drop. The 74,000 fans in attendance, with well over 60,000 of them being Solgavish, was silenced by the goal, and the reality that they could actually lose the match began to set in. After a few minutes of uninspired play from the Solgavish, Kristoffersan saw something that made his heart sink. Manager Peter Strömberg called over Halvorsan during a stoppage in play and began to lay into him, seeming to yell at the top of his lungs. Halvorsan fired back, and soon the two went into a shouting match on the sideline. Kristoffersan knew that Strömberg and Halvorsan had a history, but he never saw them be this vicious towards each other, and especially not during a game. As play resumed, Strömberg dismissed his team captain with a wave of his hand, and Halvorsan stormed back to the field clearly pissed, muttering something under his breath. Whatever confidence the team had before that exchange was now shattered, and they pathetically limped to full time, sealing the 1-0 loss. To the Solgavish, most thought that not winning their group, while on home turf, would be a disappointment, with not even making it to the knockouts to be a complete embarrassment. Yet this is what they are in danger of now, and the team will have to focus on winning against Saperetia by any means necessary in order to have a chance to sniff the knockouts. But with Roenfeldt suspended for the next match, there’s a 3x Bay of Azor Cannon Award winning hole in the team’s defense. For Strömberg, the next man up would have to be Rega Lysborg defender Stephan Kalb, who’s both a capable player, and experienced enough to pick up on Roenfeldt’s leadership roles. For Kristoffersan, he wasn’t ready to let the next game be his last match before retiring from international football.

Welcome to Lysborg, the Heart of the Kingdom!

In conjunction with the Royal Solgavish Football Federation, and the Greater Lysborg Travel Advisory Board, we here at the Ministry of Culture and Recreation is happy to welcome all foreign fans to Lysborg who would like to see their team play at Harald Kistner Memorial Stadium! The stadium is Solgavden's largest at 74,000, and regularly hosts some of the biggest sporting events within the country, including every King Halfdan IV Cup Final. Recently, the stadium hosted the Final of the 23rd FFI League of Victors, which ended as a thrilling 5-4 victory for Auprussian side Alexia. While the stadium is very nice, there's much more to do around Solgavden's capital city, so let's give a brief overview of the city.

Kolvereid District
This district houses the multiple facets of Solgavden's government, and has some of the most architecturally stunning buildings in the entire city. This is where Lysborg really shines as a capital city, as Kolvereid has both Storholm Palace and Aulric Palace, the homes of the royal family and the nation's parliament respectfully. Kolvereid also lies along the north bank of the Sisse River, with most visitors having a great view of the water from the palaces. Kolvereid also houses multitude of government agency, including Solgavden's public broadcaster, RKT, on 37 Gronne Alle. While this area of Lysborg may seem more affluent and uptight compared to others, people who live here still know how to have fun. Old Gronne Park is one of the oldest green spaces in the city, and it's football stadium, which shares the same name, is also one of the oldest. Being the site of the first Kongensliga match in 1928, reenactments feature era-specific rules, balls, and uniforms happen regularly. Last but not least is Arnette Gardens, which is a square of row houses for the Chancellor, and his Ministers of State. While not always open to the public, the courtyard at Arnette Gardens features plants sourced from all over the world, specifically arranged to give the visitor a visually and aromatically beautiful experience.

Old Captial District
Located more centrally within the city, Old Captial District is just as it's name suggests, the old capital that modern Lysborg was built around. It's defining feature is the large walls that surround the district in a circle. While it's not used to defend the city from prospective enemies today, it's still manned by guards of the Queen's House Regiment, donned in uniforms accurate to the late 16th century, when the walls were first constructed. In the middle of the Old Capital District is Braundark Square, lined by shops and businesses along it's perimeter, and featuring a series of monuments and memorials at it's center. The most widely recognized monument is the bronze statue of Field Marshal Bernd Anderssan sat atop a tall marble pillar, metaphorically and literally looking over the nation he helped craft. The Old Capital District is more working-class than Kolvereid and has one of the largest immigrant communities in the city, which leads to Old Capital having a large collection of restaurants from various cultures. Harald Kistner Memorial Stadium is in this district, along with Lurrev Stadium, home of De Vursen FK and the second largest in Solgavden at 67,000.

Torkola District
While the city is dominated by Kolvereid and Old Capital, Torkola is nothing to be laughed at. While it is smaller than its neighbors, Torkola has a quaint, quiet quality to it, making it seem more like a cozy village than a part of a metropolis. There has been cases of tourists falling in love with the area after visiting, and coming back to move in when they want to settle down. Schools within this district are top notch, with Torkola Technical University and St. Octavia University being among the most prestigious in the country. This is a place perfect for families to visit, with easily accessible parks, frequent festivals, and an abundance of venues. Visatena Concert Hall is one that almost always has something going on, with bands fighting just for the chance to play at this historic venue.

This just scratches the surface of what Lysborg offers to those that visit, so we advise all prospective visitors to be ready to explore this great city!

Kick Corps defender Sarah Arrowsword will reportedly miss the remainder of IAC-25, according to manager Danika Garner. Arrowsword was placed on the injured list under "maternity leave." No other information has been found regarding this potential incident. Arrowsword declined to comment when contacted.

Sarah's entire life had been a series of impulsive decisions. It seemed like destiny was trying to pull her kicking and screaming down some specific path. Her father Seth always pictured her as a basketball player, especially when she turned out to be tall for a Drawkian girl. Naturally she decided she'd rather play soccer. It wasn't her true calling, it wasn't some eureka moment when she found the game. She just knew that she wouldn't be able to get out of being pushed into sports, so she flexed the one power she had: choosing which sport to drain her free time in. It pissed off her dad, which was enough. The fact that she was ridiculously good once she got to high school was just a bonus that almost made the effort worth it.

By her senior year of high school, Sarah had no interest in further academic pursuits. When she wasn't at school or at practice, she was being corralled into studying by her dad. She was rarely given permission to go out with friends or teammates, and yet her father still felt aloof and distant whenever she was at home. It was a special kind of hell. The only good thing is that she was so good at soccer, she had legitimate attention from scouts. Making money from messing around on the field? Sounded better than sitting in class for another 5 years. Of course, high schoolers were rarely selected in the DLK draft, funneling most everyone into the Drawkian collegiate system to churn away before they're considered "worthy" to make the pros. That's how it was back in Sarah's day at least -- NIL changes have made the college game a little more profitable for the cream of the crop, but Sarah had no such option as a 19-year-old in eastern Drawkland.

So, naturally, Sarah took the secret third option. She looked abroad and overportal, getting attention from the Whitehaven Triumph of the i-League of Ceni. She was one of the first Drawkians to cross the portal and ply their sporting trades away from Sonnel. It created a small movement, including players like Nicole Warren and Cam Cross. Some of that was thanks to Sarah refusing to take the obvious option. Why should her destiny be predetermined for her? To hell with the beaten path. Once she was there in Ceni, a world away from her father's rules, she went all-out. No stone left unturned, besides ones that would threaten her career.

Everything after that felt like a blur. Moving around Rushmore, playing for the national team, returning to Drawkland, getting closer with her former national team friends after the original Kick Corps was replaced by the Elite Eleven. There was that whole saga with Nicole Warren and Mike Rodney of the Elite Eleven. Once again it felt like her path was chosen for her. She couldn't exactly bail when Nicole decided to go on the immortality quest and Cam immediately volunteered to go with. She especially couldn't back out leading up to the trip when Nicole and Cam had a small falling-out that threatened the whole expedition which now included ten mortals including her half-brother Andrew.

The path seemed too hard set for her. She did her best to help, and the group made it into the maze in one piece. Then, bit by bit, it started to crack. The group fractured. Sarah thought she'd lost Andrew, putting her into an almost hollow state. Then she noticed a trap threatening her, Cam, and Nicole all at once. It felt like her destiny had gotten to her at last. There was no way she could escape. With her last burst, she managed to push Cam and Nicole to safety before getting her leg crushed under a collapsing cave roof. She watched as Cam and Nicole had to leave her behind to save themselves.

Yet, even when facing inevitable death, Sarah just refused to take the obvious route. This wasn't exactly her doing, but the maze revived her as bait to eliminate the rest of her party. Against all odds a majority of the group survived and proceeded to complete the quest for immortality ... Sarah included.

Unfortunately, getting to live forever doesn't exactly fix your personal problems. The good news is that Sarah knew she'd never have to get a real job. She could play soccer until she couldn't stand it anymore and hopefully retire on the great deal of money she'd build up ... if she didn't burn through it all as she earned it. She also had a group of very close friends she could lean on, even though she usually leaned on a bottle instead. It had become habit at this point, and with immortality super-protecting her liver, there was little incentive to stop.

It didn't help that Nicole and Cam placed some pretty heavy pressure on her. It wasn't on purpose, she knew her friends wouldn't want to put her in a bad situation. But when Nicole paired with Mike and later Cam with Jaxon, it put Sarah in quite an awkward position. Her friends had marriage on the horizon, with immortal future spouses that they could depend on, well, forever. Sarah unfortunately didn't have chemistry with many of the Elite Eleven, and her current state made her quite adverse to getting with a mortal man long term.

So again came the third option. Like many of her past decisions, this one was more unconscious than Sarah would like to admit. There was a certain member of the non-Elite immortals in Drawkland that she could stand to be with for more than 3 hours in a row, especially with alcohol involved. It wasn't exactly something Sarah felt proud of the day after, but it was enough of a break from her day-to-day dirge that she allowed it to continue.

Now, here she was. A long series of choices throughout her life had led her to this. This wasn't some average fuck-up. This was something a little more serious. At any point, had she looked back on her own behavior, she might've righted the ship in time. Instead, she would be paying the price. And, thanks to her wonderful first-year manager forgetting her demand to change the injured list transaction reasoning, the world knew it. Surely this would blow over quick.

BREAKING:
NEWS: The KSN Nuytinck keeper, Thomas van der Bijl loses confidence after a fan in PruCh.net called him "The Nieuwish Andre Onana" because he only conceded 2 goals when against Recuecn.

Here is the post:

Thomas van der Bijl Nuytinck, Nieuweland

Praying for a miracle to win the match if I don't concede many... #IAC25 #WishMeLuck #TeamTalk

But since then, Filip Vermeer has been receiving lots of backlash, with some support from Marblelanian players. Note, that these few of the many posts we've found supporting van der Bijl and condemning Filip:

Gijsbert de Zeeuw Nuytinck, Nieuweland

Please respectfully shut up, respect our starting keeper, man... We literally tried our best for you to be happy, this is serious.

I would like to sincerely condemn Filip Vermeer's actions, being a goalkeeper is never easy, you are literally the last line of defense, and the team would most likely blame you if you concede.

I stand with Thomas van der Bijl, don't worry pal, do your best, go Sky Blues, and Yellow Monkeys!!!

Don't give unnecessary 'support' especially when your country's in a dying position.

Thomas Van der Bijl deserves better, perhaps Marbleland FA should work on kidnapping Thomas to our national team??? (This is just a joke)
And none of his teammates are supporting him so...

Many Marblelanian fans and players provided support for van der Bijl, while Nieuwelanders critcise him. The Nieuweland National Team has yet to respond. It is rumoured that Ryan Goldbridge and Andy Terrance, Marblelanian goalkeepers may not play due to their next matches if Thomas does not get proper justice.

Many other Marblelanian keepers are also doing the same in case they get selected.
This has put pressure on both Filip and Nieuweland FC.

"It is totally outrageous" said Ryan Goldbridge. 'He definitely don't deserve it."

And now time for new updates on what the heck is goin' on in Chromia.

About 80 million fans have arrived in Chromia, YES, 80 million, crazy right? Chromia has made plans to stuff over 6 million fans into the ground (Don't ask me how). Thousands of fanbases have been placed throughout Chromia and nearby towns and in Marbleland as well. While about 5 million Marblelanians will be watching in the stadium grounds, about 15 million fans would gather outside the stadium.

For now, it is a super crucial match for everyone in Group G, every second, every minute, every pass, every kick, every chip, every tackle, every chance, every goal, every chant, it now all matters. And now we will who is the tough who is going to get going in our final, and the toughest matchday, thus far.

Interviews and Starting XI are not available for the time being. Please stand by.
