Welcome one and all to Paradystopia but more importantly, to the 38th Rugby Union World Cup.

Here, 36 nations from across the Multiverse will battle it out for ultimate bragging rights in international rugby union. Will Abanhfleft successfully defend their title from RUWC37? Will a supposed minnow assert themselves upon the tournament with a meteoric rise? Will the whole thing grind to an ignominious halt as a result of absurd shenanigans involving penguins?

Only time will tell.

Regardless of what may or may not happen, we hope everyone enjoys their time here in this ridiculous little corner of Esportiva and we get to witness some captivating rugby in the process.

Paradystopia; An Overview

To define Paradystopia succinctly is a difficult task. It's a curious and somewhat arbitrary melting pot of cultures, races, and individuals that barely functions as a country. Aside from a majority human population, one can also find sentient cats (The Xat'i), sentient otters (The Pterons), and roving flocks of penguins in most places throughout the islands. Visitors are advised that consent should definitely be sought before attempting to 'pet' any of our Xat'i or Pteron citizens as whilst the Pterons are generally good-natured and won't take too much offence over such a faux-pas, the Xat'i will not tolerate it. That is, a Pteron is likely to point out politely that they are a citizen of Paradystopia and your actions can be viewed as inappropriate, whereas a Xat'i is liable to swiftly introduce you to their claws. As for the penguins which roam freely throughout our lands, they are essentially wild animals so on your head be it if you wish to initiate physical contact with one.
The other thing which is most striking to visitors to these islands is the lack of any sort of restrictions on recreational substances. This is most apparent to most tourists when, upon arrival at New Newetoun's modest airport or any of the many seaports, they can get bombarded by an array of 'freelance pharmacists' (read 'drug dealers') selling all manner of weird and wonderful narcotics. All visitors should be advised that cheaper and better regulated variants of their wares can be obtained easily in any urban centres and these individuals take advantage of the novelty such substances' legality to fleece tourists. Whilst the country makes a great deal of money from drug tourism, public intoxication will likely result in an individual being escorted to one of the many free health clinics dotted about (there being many for this very reason). This wouldn't be being escorted by a member of law enforcement to clarify, but rather kind-hearted members of the community, and with only a modicum of eye-rolling. We don't really have a police force per se.
A third point is we encourage visitors to please enjoy the scenery. Eco-tourism makes up a large part of the Paradystopi economy and we like to promote it. The seas around our islands are lush and plentiful, and the whale-/dolphin-watching tours particularly recommended. For the more adventurous, there are Pteron-led diving tours to witness some of our diverse marine ecosystems. Should you prefer to stay on land, you can travel to see penguin colonies or find a good vantage point to watch the myriad seabirds making the most of our local bountiful waters.

Below is a list of the various urban centres of Paradystopia, and the relevant stadia located there. Ordered by population.

NEW NEWETOUN

New Newetoun is Paradystopia's sprawling and bustling capital boasting a vibrant and eclectic mix of peoples. There's a chance you could find a diaspora of ex-pats from your nation hidden away somewhere selling your traditional cuisine or supposedly cultural wares to inquisitive locals and tourists. The Paradystopi believe firmly that cultures together become greater than the sum of their parts and although this can result in some fascinating melds of cultural influence, you also get some bizarre fusions that no-one wanted nor asked for. New Newetoun has all of this and more, though given it's non-sensical layout, a local guide is recommended for finding those hidden gems, or maybe even a genuine taste-of-home.

Cheapside is Paradystopia's dedicated international rugby stadium. Located by the banks of the River Aebrym, Paradystopia's longest river whose delta forms a large part of the New Newetoun scenery, this stadium is often used as a concert venue outside of rugby duties.

URBSCLAVIUM

Urbsclavium doesn't feel like a Paradystopi city, and if you were to ask anyone from the west of the country to 'name an ugly city', they'd likely say 'Urbsclavium' before you'd even finished the question. This response is somewhat unfair upon a city crafted from the ground up with efficiency in mind by refugees not from the Paradystopia of the past, but from it's sister states of The Glorious Commune and Ark. Formed initially with isolationist ideals by these peoples, they soon found their place as masters of industry in the country and take pride in the fact that without this manufacturing hub, Paradystopia would scarcely be able to function. Whilst the heart of the city maintains an imposing feel, the outskirts provide a 'buffer-zone' between this cold interior and something more recognisably Paradystopi. In doing so, they appear to take the best of both worlds and you can be sure to find some outstanding sashimi restaurants out here which owe a lot to a large Pteron population.

Semifinal 2

Home ground to KRS Urbsclavoszydensanorjens & AC Urbsclavoszydensanorjens (Football)

In the heart of Paradystopia's second city is Paradystopia's largest football stadium; home to AC Urbsclavoszydensanorjens, and to a lesser extent, home to the rugby team KRS Urbsclavoszydensanorjens. The ground itself is arguably the best equipped in the country as well as visually stunning (assuming that grey brutalist edifices which blend near seamlessly with their urban surroundings are your thing, that is.) being a testament to the Urbsclavian hallmarks of ruthless efficiency, and the mantra of 'function over form'. It's proximity to the city's centre boasts excellent transport connections for players and fans alike, though some local geographic help may be required in discerning which of the many imposing concrete cuboids is actually the stadium.
Whilst the inside may initially appear quite spartan, you will find that each and every aspect has been considered. For example, the layout inside has been acoustically crafted to maximise a boisterous atmosphere; various sound reflecting units on the inside of the partial roof expertly ricochet crowd noise at an optimal level to enhance spectator experience. The thin plastic seating is ergonomically crafted for maximum comfortability, and an app system exists for pre-ordering refreshments.

FARSLUM

Farslum is a charming small city on an island off to the south of the 'mainland' of Paradystopia which rivals New Newetoun for it's myriad diversity. The populace are quite passionate sports fans, but also remarkably friendly with it (the notable exception being when the T'auld Hoos v Farslum Young Boys derby crops up in the rugby superleague) and they are known for the raucous atmosphere they always bring to their home games.

PANTSDON

Whilst the term 'affluent Paradystopi' isn't really a thing, Pantsdon is the closest thing the country has to a 'posh' neighbourhood. The residents are notoriously houseproud over their community and aren't exactly ecstatic at the prospect of having a large number of travelling rugby fans on their doorsteps. You may be able to win over some of the locals with a few choice derogatory statements about New Newetoun though, a city they hold in great disdain.

Shandy Street, Pantsdon
Fixtures
MD1 - QUE v MYR
MD2 - TJU v MYR
MD3 - MYR v CAD
MD4 - ANM v QUE
MD5 - CAD v LIB

Home ground of Pantsdon Redsocks

TROGLOGRAD

Troglograd is Paradystopia's most eastern city, occupying the most easterly point of the nation. The most immediately noticeable thing about Troglograd is that a good portion of it is buried within a cliff-face and another good portion of it floats. Initially, the city was dug into a cliff face as a location from which to keep an eye on the vast ocean beyond the eastern edge of Esportiva, then during excavations, veins of gold and other rare metals were found within the mountains leading to further mining. As this industry boomed, a pier was set up to facilitate shipping these materials to places such as New Newetoun, Urbsclavium, and Abertynkle. This in turn grew to a large floating complex as the city evolved into it's half-floating, half-subterraneous state it has today. It is truly a marvel of Paradystopi civil engineering and a great example of what can happen when city planners go 'Yeah, fuck the topography.'

MD2 - BRI v CBP
MD3 - ASA v TEV & CBP v TGH
MD4 - TGH v PIF
MD5 - PIF v ASA
Octofinal 8

Home ground of KRS Troglograd & SK Zlatari Troglograd (Football)

ABERTYNKLE

A grey port town on the northern shores of Paradystopia, Abertynkle is the Paradystopi urban centre most known for being beleaguered by the weather. Southerly winds from over the ocean frequently hit northern Paradystopia with relentless cold rain and snowy flurries resulting in the populace here being a special breed of hardy individuals who take pleasure in pointing out what a load of wimps those who don't live here are. Despite seemingly looking down upon anyone who lives in a warmer climate, the Abertynklites are a very warm and hospitable bunch who love their rugby and are very proud supporters of their local team; The Tinkers.

Riverside Park, Abertynkle
Fixtures

MD2 - MDA v HSP
MD3 - KYP v HUE & CRN v KOR
MD4 - UNC v CRN
MD5 - CRN v KYP
Octofinal 5
Quarterfinal 3

Home ground of Tinkers o'Abertynkle

ZYGNUSGRAD

Zygnusgrad, known for it's local swannery (Roast swan incidentally being a local delicacy. Apparently it tastes like goose, but gamier), is a uniquely picturesque Paradystopi town. This is namely due to it being built on/around a waterfall and as a result, being the poster-child for tourism to the oft neglected east of the country. The town follows the cascading River Mokro from it's estuary up towards the jagged mountain tops on the eastern island. As beautiful a place as this is, be aware that it's not a place for anyone with mobility issues owing to an abundance of steep lanes and stepped pedestrian footpaths.

Polye Ragbiya, Zygnusgrad
Fixtures
MD1 - CBP v PIF
MD2 - TEV v PIF & TGH v ASA
MD3 - PIF v BRI
MD4 - TEV v BRI & ASA v CBP
MD5 - BRI v TGH

Home ground of KRS Zygnusgrad

ST. AGNANT'S

The central hub of Paradystopia's agricultural heartlands, St. Agnant's, or St. Agnant's Wamp to give it it's full name is the most rural of the chosen host venues. The town itself is barely more than a large farmer's market around which a medium sized settlement has developed. It is the least likely of the venues to be recommended as a tourist destination though is beginning to see an upswing in visitors seeking some quietude in old-timey surroundings. Needless to say, it's not particularly equipped to accommodate throngs of travelling rugby fans.

Badmeadows, St. Agnants
Fixtures
MD1 - KYP v KOR
MD2 - HUE v CRN & UNC v KYP
MD3 - QDT v UNC
MD4 - HUE v KOR & KYP v QDT
MD5 - KOR v UNC

Home ground of The Cabbagers RUC

GOOSTON-BY-THE-SEA

Based on a small island off the coast of the nation's capital, lies a small fishing hamlet of Gooston-by-the-Sea. There is little of interest in the village itself beyond the roving hoards of cantankerous geese. However, the main draw of the island is a huge, and totally out-of-place sporting complex with attached gargantuan beer hall; The Nub which brings a great deal of tourism to the island.

The Nub, Gooston-by-the-Sea
Fixtures
MD1 - USD v LIS
MD2 - PDT v USD
MD3 - MLD v LIS
MD4 - UAD v LIS
MD5 - NBT v UAD
Octofinal 1
Semifinal 1
Third Place Playoff

Home ground of Gooston Breuers RUC

Originally constructed as a purpose built stadium for a newly fledged national baseball team, The Nub has since grown to now accommodate a cricket pitch and also a rugby field and is seen as one of the top tourist destinations in Paradystopia. Whilst you may think it achieves this in relation to sporting events, it is actually the food and beer hall that is seemingly the main draw. With generous sponsorship from Burgunden Breueries (A subsidiary of Terembev) of Neu Engollon and given Paradystopia's lax alcohol laws, The Nub has found itself one of the premiere hot-spots for stag- and hen-parties, or just general boozy breaks in Esportiva. If there's anywhere in Paradystopia likely to reduce your supporters to a riotous assembly, it's here.

The Confederation of the Philippine Islands and Formosa commonly called Philippine Islands and Formosa, or also Philippines-Formosa, is a federal constitutional parliamentary monarchy shared with Spain in Southeast Asia. It is bordered on the north by Japan, on the south by Indonesia and the Celebes Sea, by the east by the Pacific Ocean and on the west by West Philippine Sea and Vietnam. The Philippine Islands and Formosa covers 421,000 square kilometers and has has an estimated population of 102 million inhabitants. The Philippine Islands and Formosa comprises of 25 federal entities, 6 autonomous territories, and a special territory.

Sports have been popular with the Philippine-Formosans since its inception in 1899, one of them is rugby. It has actually played in seminaries and schools from its introduction by the Irish, French, and New Zealander seminarians and priests when visiting the country in its developing years. But there are some clubs and state sides formed in some years even though it's only played in collegiate level and founding a league for state sides and colleges.

Licentian National Rugby Union Team

Rugby union is one of the major sports in the Licentian Isles, most popular in Colesham and sections of Montfort Parish. For many years rugby in the Isles was intertwined with our neighbours across the Channel in Apox through the Super Sixteen, but now after the isolation from the rest of the multiverse, Licentian rugby has taken more of an inward view, with much attention paid to the development of the expanded 12-team National League.

Licentian rugby is focussed fairly heavily on the forwards, with some importance also given to tactical kicking. Tries are just as likely to come from a rolling maul or a penalty try resulting from repeated forced scrum infractions as they are from a flowing move through the backs. Outside halves and centres are expected to be able to both pass and kick from hand, with more importance probably given to the latter skill.

Do whatever you want.

Numbers puppet I won't be RPing with but teamsheet presented here for the benefit of my opponents.

The team's gameplan is that of a dull, dirty, and cynical style of rugby.
Just imagine the most boring and nasty rugby you can, that's how these guys play.

RUWC - Ko-orenite National Team - The Dragonflies
Image

Teams mentioned as [club]/[region (if applicable)].

Backs
Fullbacks
FB Abel Ashling (M, 23) - Greencaster Galaxy/Surbourneshire
FB Clayborne Corwick (M, 25) - Idyllwild Coronae/Gehrenna
FB Aonotu Aohugise (M, 25) - Maynard Andromeda

Three selected for if we want to run a dual FB-setup, which happens, albeit rarely. Ashling is one of the stars of this team, playing under the bright lights of the Galaxy - that is, it's the team with by far the highest pressure and expectations - so they'll be looked at if things are tough. At just 23, that's a tall ask, but one that Ashling's been able to deal with for a couple of years already. We're fine. Corwick is a serviceable backup, Aohugise will only see the field if we're in injury trouble.

Wingers
LW Tei Warmeling (M, 28) - Mayara Wanderers-Vulpecula
LW Nudhwiles Gradhnahothen (M, 22) - Ansonville Comets/Surbourneshire
RW Linus Howbrick (M, 26) - Tarrashall Travellers/Surbourneshire
RW Kenzie Wizhomoden (M, 19) - Aubury Swans/Gehrenna

Well, as wingers are usually trying to get in scoring position, it's not exactly the best position on offer. Warmeling and Howbrick are fine, they really are, but either speedy or technical and never both.

Centres
IC Leslie Woodbrier (M, 22) - Ansonville Comets/Gehrenna
IC Elysedd yCilionmac (M, 24) - Penstead Bears/West Strand Riding
OC Hyocou Geggyu (F, 19) - Tarrashall Travellers/West Strand Riding
OC Reginald Airthorn (M, 25) - Aubury Swans/Surbourneshire

Look, centres are basically defensive wingers, right? Sure. So the team has some handy guys on offer. Woodbrier and Geggyu are tremendous players, and usually form some/most of the attacking impetus as well. We require them to be crafty, shifty, and hard to tackle, but we also need them to dish out a hit here or there, if possible. Hard to combine, but these guys have it.

Halves
FH Crispin Whitebuck (M, 24) - Maynard Andromeda/West Strand Riding
FH Blaine Armkins (M, 25) - Idyllwild Coronae/Gehrenna
SH Nat Owofuhten (M, 21) - Greencaster Galaxy/Surbourneshire
SH Torin yCadeyrenmac (M, 22) - Mawrystwyth Phoenix/Mawryshire

Ko-oren runs off of the scrum half almost all the time. The fly half is more a glorified kicker and/or perfect passer, while the scrum half is the general, the leader, but a terrible captain (we need them to be dishonourable and looking for advantages). So that's where the fly half comes in again, a real gentleman to persuade the ref not to yellow card our team. We've taken a bit of a step back at both positions compared to previous RUWCs, so initially we might take a little while to find our footing.

Forwards
Number 8
N8 Haggya Gimmerra (M, 25) - Tarrashall Travellers/West Strand Riding
N8 Faramond Chipway (M, 28) - Willowbourne Foxes/Gehrenna

Haggya is the default starter and he'll only sit out time if he's at the end of his stamina. Not a terribly strong position for us, but very useful and at least not a detriment to the squad.

Flankers
BF Charlie Dhotliregun (M, 21) - Ansonville Comets/Surbourneshire
BF Jyoddilla Nyashill (M, 25) - Eaglebury Aquila/West Strand Riding
OF Dossirla Moshindi (M, 26) - Greencaster Galaxy/West Strand Riding
OF Conor yAigaethol (M, 26) - Llandy Bulls/Mawryshire

Dhotliregun has gone professional this past year and it's all we wanted in a flanker. Already one of the better players of the domestic competition, he fires up the Comets and is likely the biggest name to develop through the ranks in five years. Moshindi, on the other side, is more the make of the rest of the squad - not always a difference maker, but a very high floor.

Locks
LS Jack Merririge (M, 25) - Maynard Andromeda
LS Autju Arzehnra (M, 24) - Mayara Wanderers-Vulpecula/Gehrenna
RS Bob Merririge (M, 23) - Maynard Andromeda/Gehrenna

The Merririge bothers are seemingly telepathically linked and that's a very good connection to have at this position. It also allows them to set up tackles (defensive) and passes (offensive) to get their teammates out of hot water.

Props
LP Bartholomew Alderfellow (M, 25) - Ansonville Comets/Gehrenna
LP Buford Duhtihden (M, 21) - Mayara Wanderers-Vulpecula/Surbourneshire
LP Iogan ySyddirwig (M, 22) - Penstead Bears/Mawryshire
TP Will Cheltell (M, 26) - Aubury Swans/Gehrenna

Yes, only one tighthead, though we could call up Winterlas if push comes to shove. Primarily, it's Alderfellow with Cheltell, adventurous, daring tacklers and imposing people on and off the field.

Hookers
HO Loyal Farrell (M, 28) - Maynard Andromeda/Gehrenna
HO Cyprien Rougeau (M, 28) - Willowbourne Foxes

Farrell is capable but sometimes requires bailing out - though in one on one tackling situations, it's incredibly hard to get past him.

Style & Strategy
Style mod: -5. Ko-oren plays an extremely risk-averse style with an emphasis on kicking (both defensively and offensively). They rarely play dirty, but do employ some gamesmanship depending on who's on the field.

Usually, the Ko-orenites run off scrum-half with the fly-half there for tactical decisions and kicking. We're not expecting a dramatic change this edition, other than that the halves will likely try to get the ball out of their hands faster, and into possession of the forwards, who outshine the backs by some distance. The Darmeni two-fullback system might get some use with Ashling and Carson, but we're not expecting too much in that regard. Expect the most 'predictable' and open Ko-orenite side in a long time, but with a few tricks and offloads to keep opponents guessing a little. Defence is still the focus.

Jersey
The jersey now has green and blue in equal measure: green on the left, blue on the right, with yellow trim. The away jersey is nearly the same, but much lighter.

Tactics: The Darmeni game puts an emphasis on territorial advantage, thereby making the team's kicking game its most important asset. Darmeni teams will go for three points at any chance they get; receiving the resulting kick-off following the score will give them an advantage in possession as well. The introduction of the 50:22 rule has seen the Darmeni team become slightly more aggressive when it comes to scoring tries, but the team still attempts far more drop goals than is usual.

Postby Commonwealth of Baker Park » Thu Jan 08, 2026 7:00 pm

The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Team were 40 minutes from defending their RWC 36 crown when their one glaring weakness proved to be an obstacle to ultimate success against Abanhfleft in the Rugby World Cup 37 Final.

A pair of missed penalties, coupled with a failure to convert on two of their three tries left the Blues & Grays with a lack of confidence in their kicking which meant instead of opting for a 32 yard penalty with 7 minutes remaining which would have cut the deficit to 3, they elected to go with a scrum which led to a subsequent BP penalty for not releasing at the breakdown on the ensuing possession; they were unable to reach the opposition 22 over the remainder of the match which ended 23-17, giving the Flefts their third world title.

Head Coach Dean Mazzirella and new Technical Director Tony Danielson--who led Baker Park to their championship win on home soil as coach--have turned over the lineup ahead of the trip to Esportiva for the current edition with an eye towards further expanding the flexibility in playing style that was a hallmark of the side in Britonisea.

The Hoops will be among the group of favorites to claim the trophy in Paradystopia, along with the holders, TJUN-ia, Ko-oren and Kelssek; Britonisea, Lisander and Darmen will also be strong contenders to reach the last eight among the field of 36 which sees 15 unranked nations making a debut or returning after lengthy absences.

Britonisea gave BP trouble in both matches played in their home tournament, once in the group stage and then in the knockouts; they will be in Group F along with the Hoops and are expected to be the strongest competition in the pool when the nations meet on matchday 2; Baker Park will open against the Philippine Islands and Formosa on matchday 1

The Paradystopia National Rugby Union Squad

Rugby union is a particularly popular sport in Paradystopia, and with the upcoming hosting of the 38th Rugby Union World Cup there is an aura of excitement about the national team and their prospects within the competition. A good portion of the fair-weather fans truly believe the team can go all the way, especially given the home advantage and dismiss the likes of Baker Park, Abanhfleft, TJUN-ia, and Ko-oren as being the 'old guard', ripe for being toppled by the likes of new up-and-comers such as Paradystopia. Those more knowledgeable with regards to international rugby simply smile and nod at such remarks whilst silently hoping the national team can just avoid coming last in their group.

Also, as an interesting quirk, the Paradystopi national squad use letters on their kits as opposed to numbers.

Style of Play
For the benefit of RP, style mod would be +4/+5
Paradystopia strive to play rugby that utilises their backs, and back row forwards. They like to keep the ball moving quickly, play expansively, and try to out manoeuvre their opposition with darting runs to wherever the space may be at any given moment. They are an agile team who love chasing an impromptu kick downfield and a good tricksy set-piece. However, having such a speedy team is not without it's downside. Where Paradystopia are somewhat lacking is in their forward pack who are underpowered by international averages. As such, their scrum game, and mauling are certainly weaknesses that a stronger team could definitely exploit. Their above average mobility does mean they are pretty good at obtaining fast ruck speeds whilst in possession and generating turnovers in the ruck when defending.
Notable Players
  1. Cadenza Lea - Scrum half
At a bit over 5 foot tall, it's easy for one to disregard Cadenza as a viable threat as a rugby player. Do this at your peril as once Cadenza is on the rugby field, her mentality and passion for the game would make the most fearless of honey badgers look like a docile puppy in comparison. She is the boss of the forward pack (even though Petar Peeters is officially the captain) and despite being dwarfed by the entire forward pack no-one in their right mind would dare question her. Cadenza is dangerously quick, tactically astute, utterly fearless, and actually stronger than you might expect. Be also aware that with her diminutive size, she's liable to incur high tackles from opponents as a result.
  2. Rudolf Rollo - Full Back
Rudolf is an up-and-coming star of Paradystopi rugby, and it's safe to say that his efforts for Oeopolis Pinkcaps played a large part in securing the team an unexpected qualification to the RUCT. Tactically clever beyond his young years, and with an accurate boot to give him some decent stats at hitting 50:22 opportunities, he provides an effective last line of defence on top of some blistering speed to provide overlaps when nothing was available seconds before. If anyone's going to intercept you and run the length of the pitch to score a try, it'll be him.
  3. Beau Makepeace - Second Row
Whilst Paradystopia generally like to play honestly, every team needs a 'dark arts' specialist. For us, that's Beau. Just the guy who'll pick up how to aggravate your forward pack into giving away penalties, pass on choice words to the referee to provoke future advantageous rulings, and other such shithousery. It doesn't always work for him, but it's probably something you'd want to be aware of.

Hanalia Squad Announcement

Demonym: Hanalian
Style Modifier: -4
Preferred kicker: the no. 10
Roster:
Hanalia returns to the RUWC after their successful debut run ended with a loss to eventual champions Abanhfleft in the quarterfinals. The only change amongst the backs is resultant from Pierce's retirement, making way for Isaac Solis on the right wing. It's a family affair with scrumhalf Michelle Harding being joined in the squad by sister Lauren on the openside flank. Nichols will be favourite to start in the centre this time out, however Tim Cain is retained within the squad.

In the Forward pack, Hines' performs best on the loosehead side but remains a versatile option off the bench. Monty Ford, some sort of cousin to Shirley, has been drafted in to pack down in the front row. At lock, Adam 'AJ' Joyce claims the captaincy from Santiago after stepping down from international rugby. The aforementioned Harding filling in at number 7.

COMMONWEALTH OF BAKER PARK
RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

Image

Honors
Rugby World Cup 36 Champions
Rugby World Cup 37 Runner-up
Atlantian Oceania Rugby Sevens Champion (x2)

The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Union was founded in February 1954; it consolidated the governing authority that individual state unions held over sport since the turn of the century.

Currently, the CRU organizes the country's domestic club national championship, the Montieth Shield, as well as the Westerly Challenge Cup, open to all professional and amateur clubs.

Rugby was popular in the first decade after the founding of the Commonwealth; as American-style football grew in participation, rugby clubs saw a decrease in the number of registered players at established clubs. Into the 1920's, rugby saw their decreasing numbers level off and by 1931 there was a renewed interest in the game in certain areas of the country. Towns and boroughs with significant Welsh and Scottish populations led the way as rugby made inroads on the number of young men who took up active sports club memberships. The Ezra Rugby Football Union (ERFU) and the Endover Rugby Union (ERU) had far more clubs competing than their counterparts in the Baker Park Rugby Federation (BPRF), Osheana Ruby Union (ORU), and the Rugby Union of Lynchana, Midalia and St Leon (RULMS); the first Challenge Cup was organized by the ERFU in 1929, inviting any club in the Commonwealth playing the union code to participate. Endborough City RFC won the inaugural trophy, and over the next 19 editions from 1930-53, Ezran or Endoveran clubs were champions on 14 occasions.

There had never been a unified convention of the various state bodies until Sylvester Montieth, Chief Secretary of the ERFU, proposed a meeting in the winter of 1953. He wanted to find some common ground between the state organizations in order to work on increasing participation and a possible fully national body to help with technical development of players. His proposal for the formation of a Union made up of all the state level competitions was unanimously approved at the Frazier House Hotel in Hamilton, which marked the beginning of the CRU.

The national club championship was established in 1956 with a structure of two 8 team divisions with promotion and relegation playoffs, 3 years later it was expanded to 10 teams each; it was known as the Frazier Shield until 1970, when it was renamed for Sylvester Montieth, who had been elected the first Chairman of the CRU and served until 1960.

The influence that the ERFU had over the sport even after the formation of the CRU can still be seen today; the national team's shirts are Navy Blue & Gray hoops, which were adapted from the shirts worn by Ezra's most successful club, Middletown Old Boys (now Middletown RFC), originally made up of ex-students from the University of Ezra branch, whose colors were also the same; the legend of the university's adopting the colors is rooted in the story that quite a few men who had been members of the Army regiment also known The Blues & Grays were among the earliest enrolled students at UE/Middletown.

Barnitz Stadium in the city has hosted more international test rugby matches than any other ground in the country, as well as the final day of competition for both Atlantian Oceania Rugby 7's Championships, in which Baker Park claimed the title on both occasions.

Style Mod--+1.77
As a rule, Baker Park sports trend towards aggressive, offense oriented play; the average fan wants to see scoring, although they are savvy enough to recognize an action packed defensive stalemate is also worthy of respect. In real rugby terms, most clubs are back oriented in attack.

Nickname(s)--there is no single consensus between the BlueGrays, Blues & Grays or Hoops as a preference (even 'Grays & Blues' wouldn't be problematic although historically inaccurate--see above).

The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Union enter the Rugby World Cup for the sixth time, having risen to the number one ranking despite their loss in the Final in Britonisea. The only change in leadership sees Tony Danielson takes over as Technical Director, while Dean Mazzirella continues as Head Coach; several new players will make their debut, and seven new starters will make up the core of the squad.

The basic design of the Baker Park jersey has remained consistent since the first international match played in 1957; the late 1980's & early 90's saw narrower hoops--four blue and three gray--but a return to the traditional pattern came in 1995. White shorts and blue & gray hooped socks have remained standard over the years although the introduction of blue shorts is new for this edition, and an all-white change strip has also been the practice of the CRU (which is a nod to the "Ghost Whites" kit of the BP National Soccer Team) since the mid 1960's.

38TH RUGBY UNION WORLD CUP: WE'RE ON TOP OF THE WORLD... FOR NOW

Hello everyone, this is Mo Wilcox, and welcome back to yet another edition of The Rugby Rundown. Man, it still feels so surreal. It feels like it hasn’t really sunk in for me just yet, but there’s no denying it now. Abanhfleft are now three-time world champions of rugby union! I literally used to pray for times like these. I remember when it felt like winning just one championship was almost impossible. I really thought that Abanhfleft was not going to win the World Cup for as long as I was living. We didn’t win it when I was a kid growing up and watching us play our first international rugby games, and we didn’t win it for most of the time when I was actually playing for the Revolutionaries. And let me tell you guys something about my time with the national team: I really thought that Copper Cuprum was our best chance to win the whole damn thing. I really thought that going to the Chiefdom was this team’s best chance to become world champions of rugby. I don’t know why I felt that way; I just felt it. Everything just fell into place at that moment, and the stage did feel like it was being set for the blue, orange, and green to finally claim success in all three codes. And then Baggieland happened. That particular World Cup really was a funny thing, man. Abanhfleft was literally scoring for fun in every game in that World Cup until the literal actual final. The Revolutionaries scored thirty-plus points in the pool stage, then we scored at least seventeen in the playoffs, and then against the Baggies, we got nothing. We came up empty-handed. I’ve got no real explanation for it. Maybe, despite everything we did in that world cup, Baggieland really was the better team that day.

But I guess Abanhfleft would end up having the last laugh in the next World Cup, right when no one was expecting it, huh? Yeah, I wasn’t the only one who thought that the Revs dropped the ball when it came to what was possibly our best chance of finally completing the rugby grand slam. A lot of people had hopped onto the doom and gloom train and were moaning about the end of Abanhfleft’s chances of winning the trophy in the foreseeable future. The squad was not getting any younger, and most of us were inching past the primes of our careers. And maybe that was the X-factor that actually finally took us over the line and secured us the title, because this really was the last best chance for some of these guys to actually win the World Cup before they had to hang up their cleats and stuff. And, in a way, we got our revenge over Baggieland in this World Cup. I mean, yeah, we didn’t beat them for the title; heck, we didn’t even meet the Baggies at all in this competition. But we did win the World Cup on their home turf, and from a certain point of view, that’s definitely at least a modicum of vengeance achieved. And, just to prove that this first World Cup win was not a fluke at all, the guys went and did it all over again in Hannasea, minus a handful of guys who won in Baggieland. Some didn’t get called up again while a couple (including yours truly) outright turned down the call-up. And before you judge me, I had a good reason to say no. I got the call-up notice just hours after I got scanned for an ankle sprain that would sideline me a quarter of that season. But even before I had even gone in for the scan, I’d already made up my mind that I was calling it quits for international rugby. I mean, I had already gotten the biggest prize in all of rugby. What else was there for me to do?

And now here we are, living in a country that’s now become world champions of rugby union three times. Yeah, it wasn’t really three times in a row—which would have been neat, I have to admit—but you can’t have it all now, can you? It would have been nice to be the first team to win three World Cups straight, but there’s a reason why it hasn’t happened once at all in the entire history of rugby football, and that’s because it’s rugby, baby. But last World Cup, Abanhfleft will not be denied title number three. I remember it clearly because it was the time that I took over The Rugby Rundown from Graham O’Doherty, and in hindsight, it almost feels like my journey as the new face of The Rugby Rundown was similar to the journey that our Revs took on their way back to the top of the rugby world. I’m not sure if there’s really anything that I can compare this experience to. It’s not everyday that a pundit takes a “downgrade” to blogging, so to speak, so I had no idea if I was doing well or not. Well, judging by the traffic to the site during the Rugby World Cup and beyond, looks like I did a pretty good job at serving up a good mix of hot, lukewarm, and ice-cold takes via The Rugby Rundown. And if I’m being honest with all of you guys, it’s actually been fun reporting on the Rugby World Cup. It’s definitely a different experience watching as a spectator instead of as a player, but there’s also a different kind of pressure watching the national team as a fan because now, there’s not a lot that I can do to help the team win. It’s a strange feeling, I have to admit.

Now enough about reminiscing and looking back at the past. It’s time to look forward to the future. A new Rugby Union World Cup is upon us, and for the third time, Abanhfleft goes into the World Cup as the defending champions. And for the most part, it really does look as if the future is finally now. I think everyone who follows Gaelic Gamers or The Rugby Rundown at the very least knows how I feel about the fact that the Fleftic Rugby Union loves running its players into the ground. The FRU will keep calling up an older generation of players, usually to the detriment of our younger and sometimes more promising players, simply because they didn’t want to mess with what worked before. At least that was what the FRU claimed when they were called out for this particular practice a handful of times. Looks like the Union has finally learned their lesson though because I see a helluva lot of new faces in the national team. Now I can finally count with only one hand the number of players over thirty in this team, which is actually a good thing. My biggest gripe about the FRU calling up the same players back in the day was the fact that they didn’t insist upon more rotation, meaning that more often than not some of our older players got caught out of position, opening us up to getting carved open by our opponents. I want to believe that the union has finally learned their lesson this time around. Not only are they now apparently more willing to give our young guns a chance, now they’re also willing to let our vets take a back seat and provide more of a bench presence. But is it actually gonna work out for us this time around? I guess we’re going to find out in the next few weeks.

And now that we’ve got a whole lot of new faces to get familiar with, who’s going to get the spotlight shining on them this time around? I can think of a few names, but this time around I’m going to put the spotlight on a position that doesn’t always get the plaudits that they deserve. Sometimes, I feel like rugby forwards don’t always feel like they’re appreciated even though they play such a huge role in how a team plays, especially in how much a team is able to take advantage of penalties via scrums, mauls, and rucks. The backs get most of the attention because we’re the ones who score more tries than anyone else but I must say that there have been times that the backs wouldn’t have even been anywhere near a scoring position without the help of the forwards. And hookers have sometimes felt like they’re not even getting any shine whatsoever among the underappreciated forwards. But Maverick Garcia might just be the solution to our forwards finally getting some of the love that they sorely deserve. It’s not just because Maverick is great at his position (and by the way, he is), but after watching Mav play for San Seriffe in the Premiership and seeing how he can take matters into his own hands and carry the rock closer to the line when he needs to, I sincerely believe that Mav could be the X-factor for this new-look Revolutionaries XV. And if we’re talking about backs, Deandre Freitas looks like a slippery customer. That young man has been difficult to tackle, and he’s been key to the Death Worms being able to keep up in the Premiership in recent years. For the moment, the future actually looks really bright for Abanhfleft rugby for a change.

And I think that’s where I’m going to leave it. Now remember to leave your thoughts or comments about our chances of successfully defending the Rugby Union World Cup down below or even just our chances against Darmen of all teams. The site really loves knowing said thoughts and comments. Once again, I am Mo Wilcox, your new host of The Rugby Rundown, and I’m sure we will all see each other again later.

Sakura Taiyou Returns to Rugby Union World Cup

For the second time, Sakura Taiyou will be competing in the Rugby Union World Cup for the first time since Rugby Union World Cup 21 in Some Village and Neu Engollon, which happened 33 years ago (OOC: Between soccer World Cups 67 and 68, which means there have been 17 tournaments in 12 RL years, far too slow a pace.). At that tournament, we won 2 out of 5 games in the group stage which was good enough to finish 4th in our group and make the playoffs where we were annihilated by Saugeais by a score of 34 to 8 and did not return to international rugby union competition until now.

This year's Samurai Taiyou team is coached by Taishi Osaka who played as a prop for the Rugby Union World Cup 21 team. It consists of a gender-mixed squad for the first time, reflecting the government's commitment to advancing gender equality and including women in society to make up for our declining population. Since this initiative began, our women have shown themselves to be every bit as capable as our men to the extent that the Sakura Taiyou team is now majority female.

We have been drawn into Group A where we will open against Moladea, an Esportivan nation which is making their international rugby debut and has not released their roster as of this writing. Our second opponent in this group will be Lisander, the champions of Rugby Union World Cup 30 and 3rd place finishers at the 26th and 27th World Cups. They are usually one of the powers of this sport but have also not released their roster as of this writing. Third on our schedule will be the hosts Paradystopia who are unranked but did finish second at the 11th Rugby League World Cup a long time ago. They are a very aggressive team that favors a fast pace. Sakura Taiyou will need to focus on containing scrum half Cadenza Lea and fullback Rudolf Rollo to have any hope of taking points from this match. Fourth up will be United States of Devonta which play a moderately defensive style of rugby. Like Paradystopia, they have more success in rugby league than in rugby union, having finished second to Ko-oren at the Rugby League World Trophy a long time ago. Finally, there is United Adaikes, another unranked side who have yet to share their roster. Our researchers discovered that they previously competed in Rugby Union World Cup 31 but haven't appeared in a RUWC since.

One big difference from our last Rugby Union World Cup is the knockout round format. Only 16 teams will advance to the next round. These will include all teams that finish first and second plus the 4 third place teams that finish with the best records. Hence Sakura Taiyou will need to improve upon our previous 4th place finish to make it out of the group again. But it is possible as Group A is by far the weakest group in the tournament based upon the rankings with 4 unranked teams when 2 of the other 6 groups of 6 have 3 unranked teams while the remaining 3 groups have just 2. This is because the unranked host nation was placed in Pot 1 for the draw and because 3 of the 6 teams in Pot 4 are unranked. This makes for unbalanced groups and gives teams in Group A a significant theoretical advantage compared to teams in the other 5 groups. But matches are won on the pitch not on paper so there may be some surprises at this tournament. Taiyouese fans not making the trip to Paradystopia can catch the Rugby Union World Cup on T Sports with games involving Sakura Taiyou and the tournament final being broadcast on Taiyou TV.
