People also forget that a third of Somaliland's claimed territory is controlled by Somalia.

It only makes sense.

Somaliland was always "sewn into" Somalia of sorts. It never belonged there. If anything, the disintegration of Somalia started with increased repression of Somalilander clans.

Plus for Israel and the US this is a win: they gain a stable, reliable ally on the Red Sea, within striking distance of Yemen. Israel is also subverting Turkey in this manner - the Turks have been looking to put Somalia into their orbit so this would be a blow to their ambitions.

And of course, if Israel decides to complete its ethnic cleansing program of Gaza, this might be where they resettle whatever is left of its population.

Aside from all this, Somaliland is a fairly functional democracy, which is impressive given how isolated and poor it is. They've deserved it.

This nation does not reflect my RL views.

Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia and has always belonged as part of the Somali nation. Just because they were previously divided by the colonizers doesn't mean that they are deserving of secession especially since they joined Somalia almost immediately after the British left. Being a Democracy also doesn't make them worthy of secession. Also it's a disaster that the Zionists and Americans are getting an ally within striking distance of Yemen. This is not a good thing.

Somalia was not united until 1960 in the entire history of humankind.

Why? Somaliland is different to Somalia - unlike Somalia it's stable, safe, democratic and forward thinking. Somalia is a barely functioning paper regime with an electorate of 300 tribal leaders and doesn't even fully control Mogadishu - there's a reason why the US embassy is in the International Airport.

Along with the historic crimes committed against Somaliland by Somalia, why shouldn't the democratic will of the Somalilander people not be respected?

So do you think that Ethiopia should be made to give over 1/3 of their territory, or that Somalia should invade Ethiopia and conquer 1/3 of it?

Because 1/3 of Ethiopia is historically part of Somalia and filled with ethnic Somalis

Somalilanders wish to continue their independence under a stable, democratic and free government in relative to its neighbours. That is more than enough to justify its self-determination-led independence which has been true for 34 years.

On the other hand, Somali political freedoms are next to nonexistent as a result of political, press and academic suppression by a variety of forces including the Somali government, Al-Shabaab and Puntland, as opposed to Somaliland which is in the process of transitioning to a liberal government. Somalilanders have no reason and no desire to have their rights taken away from them.

Moreover, Somalia has no ability to assume any control of Somaliland when half of Somali core territories remain under the control of Al-Shabaab terrorist groups. Somalia would be much better off eradicating a terrorist group committing human rights abuses right next to its capital instead of verbally attacking a democratic state it cannot control on an international stage.

Somaliland Freedom Index: 47/100 (Partly Free)
Somalia Freedom Index: 8/100 (Not Free)

Israel's recognition of Somaliland is unlikely to be out of genuine faith and more of a political manoeuvre against the Houthis. This does not change the fact that Somaliland exists as a politically independent entity worthy of recognition, for its resilience of sustaining its freedoms and peaceful democracy on its own, not to mention that the current lack of recognition so makes trade and international aid to Somaliland difficult and negatively affects the livelihoods of Somalilanders.

Wishing to live under a stable and Democratic government does not justify Somaliland secession even if Somalia is not currently in a position to exercise control over Somaliland state.

This is 100% bait, like this is really coming from the same person that is in favour of Northern Cyprus becoming independent from Cyprus for one

Giving Somaliland international recognition would just give the Somali terrorists more reason to attack the poor inhabitants of Somaliland.

No, no and no, Somaliland fulfills all of the requirements to become a rightfully independent nation and really does deserves to be independent.

First of all, Somaliland never formally joined Somalia in full, since first of all, Somaliland was a British protectorate of British Somaliland from 1884 all the way till June 26th, 1960, while Somalia however was first an Italian protectorate under both The Sultanate Of Hobyo and The Majeerteen Sultanate from 1889 to 1905 before Somalia became Italian Somaliland all the way till 1936, when after The Second Italy-Abyssinian War ended, it was integrated as The Somali Governorate into Italian East Africa alongside Ethiopia and Eritrea and after World War Two and after a while of British occupation from 1941 to 1950 during and after The Second World War, The United Nations established The Trust Territory Of Somaliland Under Italian Administration (AFIS) which lasted until Somalia became independent on July 1st, 1960 and on that exact same day, Somaliland joined Somalia to form Somalia.

And why exactly is that important? Well, it is because Somaliland passed The Union Of Somaliland And Somalia Law on June 27th, 1960, but this was not ratified by Somalia while Somalia passed The Atto Di Unione on January 31st, 1961, which Somaliland itself never ratified, and more importantly, on June 20th, 1961, The Somali Constitutional Referendum was successfully passed with 91% of the vote, however, the vast majority of Somaliland rejected The Constitution and its Referendum by boycotting the entire Referendum, clearly showing that firstly, Somaliland was never legally in a union with Somalia and thus meant that The Somaliland Declaration of Independence, from 18th May, 1991 was not secession from Somalia, but instead simply reasserting its sovereign right to exist as an independent nation, and secondly showed that even when Somalia was an extremely new nation, most Somalilanders already rejected Somalian ownership over Somaliland.

Obviously, historical evidence in favour of the independence argument for Somaliland alone is not enough, and that is where my second point comes in, and that is that Somaliland has already been widely accepted as having fulfilled the 4 requirements of The Montevideo Convention for statehood, which are that a nation must have a defined territory, which Somaliland easily passes due to it owning clear and recognisable borders from British Somaliland, a permanent population, which Somaliland also passes with a permanent population of 3.5 to 4 million people, effectively governance, which Somaliland passes as well with its ability to create its own currency, passport and flag and its ability to maintain a proper and functional Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches and finally the capacity to enter relationships, which Somaliland passes as well due to its official recognition by Israel of course, but also because it has diplomatic relations with The Republic Of China (Taiwan), has representative and liaison offices established in Hargeisa by nations such as The United States, The United Kingdom, Ethiopia, The United Arab Emirates etc. and can operate their own international missions abroad and can finally negotiate and sign international and commercial treaties and agreements independently from Somalia.

Now, there also is the fact that Somaliland, unlike Somalia with the chaos and turmoil from the ongoing Somali Civil War and its political dysfunction due to its endemic corruption, deep clan rivalries, weak and ineffective institutions and persistent security crises, Somaliland has managed to establish and maintain a stable and functional democracy with regular, multi-party elections that actually results in a peaceful transfer of power, something that in itself is a miracle in comparison with most of Africa, with Somaliland crucially being able to actually maintain internal security and exert control over its own soil unlike Somalia who depends on international peacekeepers and cannot actually exert much influence and control outside of Mogadishu itself, from Al-Shabaab’s Islamist insurgency being openly at war with Somalia, clan militias in defiance of The Federal Government and even Somalia’s own Member States that has an extreme latitude of autonomy and can even be in direct defiance of Somalia’s Federal Government and lastly, we also have to acknowledge the fact that the extreme vast majority of Somalilanders themselves are in full favour of independence from Somalia, with the best example here being The Somaliland Constitutional Referendum, held on May 31st, 2001 as a free and fair election and where an astronomical 97% of voters voted in favour of establishing Somaliland’s Constitution, which strongly affirmed Somaliland as an independent and sovereign nation, and thus not a part of Somalia, and this desire for independence amongst the majority of Somaliland’s population has remained consistent for the past 3 decades by this point now.

So, with all of that, my final argument is this, Somaliland deserves its independence and this act by Israel to recognise Somaliland as an independent nation, regardless of the geopolitical implications and the reasons behind Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland’s independence is a positive step forward for the very ideals of self-determination and the right to independence and sovereignty that all other nations profess themselves and is also a rare good action coming from Israel as well.

Also, I’m gonna reference my post from a few days ago explaining why Somaliland should be independent from Somalia

It's funny that Palestine gets recognized as a state when it barely even functions as one (there are two of them kinda) while Somaliland, which fulfils every requirement in the Montevideo Convention, isn't.
