It's both, but one causes the other. FPTP doesn't mathematically support having more (or less) than two viable parties — until a third party reaches the threshold where it's replaced one of the two major parties, and thus stopped being a "third party" (as seen in the mid-1800s when the Republicans replaced the Whigs; the opposite effect happened in the 1820s-1830s when the Federalists stopped being a viable party, and the Democratic-Republicans almost immediately schismed into the Democrats and the Whigs to fill the void), votes going to it have the effect of empowering the major party that the voter hates more.

And the effect of this is that any fringe groups that can find a home in one of the major parties do, because that's their only plausible route to any actual influence, so the leftovers who are still tilting at that windmill on their own are the lunatics and extremists.

My kid is in her 20’s. She looked at the current third parties and found them….odd. Some things she liked…some she that would a little nutty. She tried talking to a libertarian and thought he was rather angry. Basic argument was if more libertarians were in power, things would change. As she said “That’s what the democrats and republicans argue”

That is some incredibly superficial political analysis.

As I said; they can’t sell it enough to get people of “the devil you know” logic. If you talk to a perspective new member; you don’t get all angry about the state of affairs.

Oh I agree that they should give better reasons than how it'll change everything. It should be more of a concerted effort to show how their combination of views is better. However to say that "everything will change" is the same argument the main parties give isn't true was all I was saying, because again it's a different level of change.

Both, because I think that if a new election system were introduced, the two main parties would split, and alliances between mid and small parties would form. It would curb the massive control wielded by single-party executives while allowing smaller parties a say.

You'd better put us back in so we can fix them!" And everybody falls for it, and the Republicans get back in and break a bunch more shit.

Except you can't, unless your well known and wealthy most of the time. Your vote (which I firmly believe should be cast by the way) is not anywhere near the deciding factor in an election. Also, unless your on the older side. There are rare exceptions, but their just that.

It is an immense boon to anyone looking for political office to have name recognition and/or some amount of personal wealth. Both make it easier to campaign; preexisting name recognition avoids the effort of having to establish yourself and your character to people, while personal wealth means that money is not as much of a problem.
