Several numbers get retired because a player that was important for a club died/retires/etc. Eventually, this means that all lower numbers are retired in a team.

I'm reminded of the history of the kyat, the currency of Burma/Myanmar, between 1985-1988.

Then-dictator Ne Win had a predilection for numerology, and in 1985 introduced banknotes in the odd denomination of 75 kyats. This was followed by the introduction of 15 and 35 kyat banknotes in 1986. The 75 kyat note could at least be partially explained by coinciding with Ne Win's 75th birthday, but no one had much of an explanation for the odd 15 and 35 kyat issues.

In September 1987, the government suddenly demonetised the older 25 kyat banknote, along with the newer 35 and 75 kyat notes without any warning, and without offering any compensation. This rendered approximately 75% of the country's paper money supply worthless overnight, wiping out the savings of many residents.
