The Kongensliga (King's League in English) started in 1928, alongside with the formation of the Royal Solgavish Football Federation. The league was created during a time of social unrest in the kingdom, due to the brutal civil war that ended just a few years prior. The Solgavish Civil War pitted brother against brother, as a loose coalition of republican factions fought the ruling monarchical government. Although both sides came together to end the war diplomatically, the country was devastated, and the mental scars of the conflict looked to take decades to heal. Seeing how divided the people were, the government knew it had to work hard to unite the young nation again. King Halfdan IV, the monarch at the time, wanted the league to bring forth a new sense of national unity and patriotism, with citizens of all classes coming together to celebrate the sport. The inaugural season had just 14 teams (of which 6 still play in the Kongensliga today) but soon expanded to 18. Along with the KL, a football pyramid was established with the Solgavsk Fotbollsligaer (Solgavish Football Leagues - SFL) through already existing regional leagues. Today, the Kongensliga is the most popular sporting event in Solgavden, and 18 teams compete every year for the chance at being crowned Solgavden's best.
Coinciding with the Kongensliga, the other major competition in association football is the King Halfdan IV Cup, Solgavden's domestic cup competition. Unlike the Kongensliga, which features just 18 teams, the KH4 Cup has almost 300 teams compete for the trophy, from all levels of Solgavden's football pyramid. The KH4 Cup is the oldest football competition to be played nationally. The trophy was first created in 1891, and was originally known as the Grannestad Invitational Trophy, named after the Duke of Grannestad. Prince Theodor, the Duke of Grannestad at the time, was a known patron of sport, and wanted the trophy to bring together the best of the already established regional leagues to crown a true champion of Solgavden, a newly united nation. The competition was a massive success, and helped to foster a sense of national unity. After the Solgavish Civil War, the Grannestad Invitational Trophy was renamed to the Unity Cup by King Halfdan IV, and opened to all teams competing in Solgavden's football pyramid. After his death in 1952, the cup was renamed one more time to the King Halfdan IV Cup, in honor of the man credited with organizing modern Solgavish sport.
