CBC of Myrtle Beach Sports Wire

The Cable Broadcasting Company of Myrtle Beach provides this sports newswire free of charge to the public. This newswire contains results and commentary on all domestic sports in Myrtle Beach and associated regions.

Current Offerings
Association Football: FAMB Core League and FAMB League One
Cricket: Bangor T20 Slam

Information on FAMB: The Football Association of Myrtle Beach is the governing body of association football in Myrtle Beach and directly operates the top three professional leagues in Myrtle Beach while sanctioning the operation of many more semi-professional and amateur football leagues in the country. The FAMB stepped into operating all men's professional football in Myrtle Beach in 2011 with the creation of the FAMB Core League, League One, and League Two after two decades of ill-fated top leagues led many historic clubs to bankruptcy. The FAMB was founded in 1961 as an organization for several regional associations in Myrtle Beach, who still operate all leagues in the pyramid beneath the three professional leagues.

Information on Myrtle Beach: Myrtle Beach was founded as an English colony in 1661. The country was only accessible to England via a portal to Arrosia about fifty miles off the coast of Scotland, and starting around 1720 the portal started to go in and out of existence, cutting off Myrtle Beach from the mother country. The portal generally appeared for about 10 years then disappearing for another decade until the 20th century, when the presence of the portal became much more sporadic and uncertain. Myrtle Beach was granted independence in 1950 (although it had been operating as a de facto independent country since the 1860s) and remains a member of the Commonwealth of Nations despite the often lack of contact between Myrtle Beach and other nations outside of Arrosia. Myrtle Beach has been a hotspot for refugees from outside of Arrosia via the portal whenever it is open-- particularly, Myrtle Beach has seen several very large waves of Russian immigration during periods of the portal being open.

CBC Sports Football Previews

FAMB Core League
Season 1 (2011-12)

Brunswick County AFC
Wilmington, Brunswick County
Home kit: Green and red; away kit: red and white; third kit: yellow and black
Head coach: David Tanner [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Luke Shaffer (MYR; 31yo), CB Isaac Jackson (MYR; 29yo), CB Colton Sanders (MYR; 25yo), CB Aaron Witt (MYR; 22yo), RM/CB Matthew Hale (MYR; 24yo), CM Mark Carey (MYR; 25yo), CM Wyatt Bridges (MYR; 19yo), LW/LM Jake Vaughn (MYR; 19yo), RW Aaron Hurst (MYR; 26yo), CF Douglas Burke (MYR; 27yo), CF Justin McGee (MYR; 24yo)

The Green-and-Reds were fortunately chosen from the dark pit of despair that is "independent play" to play in the Core League this season. A strange choice, given their poor standard of play after the departure of much of their talent following their detachment from any established league, but it was made nonetheless. This year, Brunswick features two new youth signings in the form of CM Bridges and LM Vaughn (although the latter often moves to play aggressively as a left winger). The 2004 CBC Sports Player of the Year Luke Shaffer remains in the goal, but his age is starting to show with an increasing number of goals allowed over the past couple of seasons. The defense is particularly weak; head coach Tanner tells CBC that the gameplan for Brunswick is to keep the ball on the ground and make short passes along the strong edges from the midfield and allow the strong offensive presence at the front of the field to score. This way, pressure is kept off of the defense because the aging centerbacks Jackson and Sanders are likely to buckle in the run-up to full-time.

Conway Wanderers FC
Conway, Conway County
Home kit: Blue and white; Away kit: White and blue; Third kit: Green and white
Head coach: Stanley Moore [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Matthew Buckner (MYR; 26yo), CB Cadenn Cain (MYR; 20yo), CB Max Byers (MYR; 21yo), CB Richard Garner (MYR; 22yo), DM/CB Dylan Logan (MYR; 19yo), DM/CB Justin Mathis (MYR; 21yo), CM Parker Bradshaw (MYR; 27yo), CM Isaac Robbins (MYR; 27yo), RM Jonathan Mann (MYR; 29yo), LW Corey Holman (MYR; 27yo), CF Craig Benson (MYR; 20yo)

Conway has always been an odd occurrence in a nation dominated by high-level offensive play. The defense gathered at Conway this season is probably one of the best defensive corps in the nation, even though they are all quite young. Moore has always been one of the most defensively-minded coaches in the nation and his ability to consistently find and train defensive players in Conway is unmatched in Myrtle Beach, if not in the world. Conway aren't favorites to win it all, mostly due to an inexperienced Craig Benson at the front of the field, but with support from Mann and Holman, Benson should develop into an excellent offensive weapon and will be greatly appreciated by Moore next season. This season, though... don't expect too much scoring going on.

Georgetown FC
Georgetown, Georgetown County
Home kit: Black and orange; Away kit: White and red; Third kit: White and orange
Head coach: Luke Stanley [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Timothy Haynes (MYR; 27yo), RB Edward White (MYR; 23yo), LB Blake Hatfield (MYR; 24yo), CB Logan Becker (MYR; 20yo), CB Nathan Boyd (MYR; 25yo), CB Brady Leonard (MYR; 28yo), DM/CB Tyler Summers (MYR; 23yo), DM/CB Kevin Waller (MYR; 20yo), CM Donald Garrett (MYR; 25yo), CF Jerry Finch (MYR; 27yo), CF Marcus Robbins (MYR; 22yo)

Georgetown has always been a peculiar team because the ownership can never seem to make up their mind on what kind of head coach they want in charge of their program. This year they've gone with newcomer Luke Stanley, whose previous experience came at the semi-professional level. He did, however, allow his previous club, Ordeal County FC, to raise three tiers to the National League (tier four). He brought on a couple new signings, 23-year-old center-back Tyler Summers and historic great center-forward Jerry Finch, although his great years seem to be waning... quickly... which is probably why Myrtle Beach FC was so eager to get him off their payroll. If Georgetown doesn't see good results this season, it's likely back down to the semi-pros for Stanley and another few years of turbulence in the lower tiers for the club. With some of the other clubs that were selected for this league, though, Georgetown will probably land right above relegation.

Myrtle Beach FC
Myrtle Beach, Conway County
Home kit: Yellow and black; Away kit: White and yellow; Third kit: Red and white
Head coach: John Burton [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Kevin Boyer (MYR; 30yo), CB Bryson Burch (MYR; 24yo), CB Jonathan Hoover (MYR; 26yo), CB Bob Jones (MYR; 22yo), RM Timothy Lowery (MYR; 26yo), CM Mathew Henderson (MYR; 28yo), CM Thomas Hoover (MYR; 23yo), LM Ricky Stewart (MYR; 26yo), CF/RW Daniel Anderson (MYR; 23yo), CF Damian Moss (MYR; 24yo), CF/LW Evan Quinn (MYR; 25yo)

The success of Myrtle ebbs and flows like a tide, no matter the skill of the team. Myrtle could have the best team in the nation and get relegated or have a team full of semi-pro players and win by a wide margin. Many people call the club the "King Tide" for this reason, considering when Myrtle does well, they do very well, and when they do poor, they do very poor. That being said, Myrtle has an excellent team put together here. The addition of a solid midfield with Hoover and Henderson will especially help their chances of winning the league this year, although the loss of Jerry Finch will weaken the offense (at least at the beginning of the season). I wouldn't be surprised to see Myrtle towards the top of the table this season... but, given the fact that there are few matches in this league, together with the inconsistency of the defense, I also wouldn't be terribly surprised to see Myrtle towards the bottom (although they wouldn't spend long in League One if they got relegated).

North Beach FC
Myrtle Beach, Conway County
Home kit: Orange and white; Away kit: Black and orange; Third kit: Light blue and orange (yes it is ugly)
Head coach: Harvey Stewart [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Matthew Reid (MYR; 21yo), RB Nolan Ellis (MYR; 29yo), CB Mitchell Crane (MYR; 28yo), CB Ashton Hatfield (MYR; 22yo), LB Colin Noble (MYR; 23yo), CM/DM Nolan Goodman (MYR; 23yo), CM Robert Butler (MYR; 27yo), CM Hunter Fisher (MYR; 20yo), RW Brody Miller (MYR; 26yo), LW John Henry (MYR; 27yo), CF Peyton Petersen (MYR; 23yo)

North Beach has never been a particularly notable team in that they don't ever seem to make great strides in one season. Instead, they make slow, calculated progression in the league each season like a predator slowly circling their prey, waiting for that final moment to strike and take what they have earned. Head coach Harvey Stewart tells CBC that he relies on "skill, not flash" and that he would rather "spend a whole season and get one more point than the last than buy a big flashy player, win the whole league once, then dive down five tiers after he becomes geriatric and retires." I would say that the average retirement age of 35 is not "geriatric," but I suppose in football you're worthless if you can't run five miles per hour. Except if you're a midfielder for North Beach- this midfield is slow and methodical, controlling the ball for long stretches of time, making small passes before making a large strike and pushing the ball forward and into the goal. Right now, this team isn't necessarily champion material, and will likely find a place right in the middle of the table, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them at the top within a few seasons.

Also, North Beach has stumbled on some champion material out of center-midfielder Hunter Fisher. Somehow he finds it in him, even when the odds are stacked against him, to fish out an attack. He has spent his career so far in the hunt down in the National League West, but he was saved out of that field by Stewart, spotting his excellent abilities while he was hunting for some new talent like a good fisherman in an even better fishing hole. (I mean, come on. Who names their kid Hunter if their last name is Fisher? Those were two separate jobs in the Stone Age.)

North Myrtle Beach AFC
North Myrtle Beach, Conway County
Home kit: Blue, dark blue, white (b/db striped); Away kit: Green, dark green, white (g/dg striped); Third kit: Light blue and black
Head coach: Samuel Perry [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Maxwell Nelson (MYR; 33yo), RB Nathaniel Dillon (MYR; 24yo), CB Keith Peck (MYR; 27yo), CB Brendan Woods (MYR; 21yo), LB Brandon Mann (MYR; 19yo), DM Spencer Bridges (MYR; 24yo), DM Marcus Charles (MYR; 19yo), CM Dimitri Vodoleyev (MYR; 23yo), CF William Fo (MYR; 19yo), CF Timothy Golden (MYR; 20yo), CF Mason Hicks (MYR; 20yo)

North Myrtle Beach is a historically good team, but as of late they have been hemorrhaging their talent. What's left is a quite young team eager to prove themselves but without the skills to get them all the way there. Given time, and with the direction of team captain Maxwell Nelson (who started playing professionally in 1995!), they will reach their potential. For now, though, this team will certainly reside in the middle of the table. North Myrtle Beach's academy (not located in North Myrtle Beach) is one of the best in the country and produces much of the most talented U17 players in the coastal regions. I am curious to see the performance of the offensive corps, as they are generally untested. Particularly, 19-year-old center-forward William Fo has shown great potential in pre-season friendlies and in their previous minutes playing for North Myrtle Beach.

Southport County FC
Southport, Southport County
Home kit: Brown and white; Away kit: Black and white; Third kit: White and brown
Head coach: Jake Atkinson [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Keith Tanner (MYR; 31yo), RB Oscar Harris (MYR; 26yo), CB Jason Buckner (MYR; 29yo), CB Devon Cunningham (MYR; 28yo), LB Tanner Koch (MYR; 20yo), CM Aaron Evans (MYR; 24yo), CM Samuel Hyde (MYR; 19yo), CM Brody Jordan (MYR; 29yo), RW Douglas Simon (MYR; 28yo), LW Drew Becker (MYR; 22yo), CF Luka Chukchov (MYR; 21yo)

Southport has a solid defense, but they're growing old while the rest of the team's skill fails to reach the point where that could be offset. So, there's not really anything good going for Southport right now. They're obviously a good team (typically only good teams are in the top flight), but they're likely not good enough to stay in the Core League and are likely to be relegated with Brunswick County this season. In preseason friendlies, the offensive unit woefully failed to make anything happen besides a few sparks of light by Chukchov quickly snuffed out by the opposing defense. Southport's likely strategy this season is to try and keep things in the midfield and play for draws, as their offense is unlikely to make too many scores. Trying to push the offense to make scores could open the door for counter-attacks from the opposing team, which could then force the offense to do more if they were able to score.

Wilmington AFC
Wilmington, Brunswick County
Home kit: Green and red; Away kit: White and red; Third kit: White and green
Head coach: Reed Shepard [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Boris Dumanovsky (MYR; 25yo), RB Sean Hebert (MYR; 21yo), CB Richard Anderson (MYR; 28yo), CB Joseph Ferrell (MYR; 24yo), LB Randy Bolton (MYR; 25yo), CM Jacob Adkins (MYR; 27yo), CM Edgar Hendricks (MYR; 22yo), CM Jesus Sampson (MYR; 22yo), RW Ethan Carey (MYR; 24yo), LW Terrence Savage (MYR; 22yo), CF Nathan Shepherd (MYR; 24yo)

Wilmington is likely the most consistent club in the nation right now. Not the best-- that may very well be Myrtle Beach-- but as we all know, Myrtle has a tendency to lose every match they're favored in (Mercury was in retrograde). They may also have the most eclectic (and skilled) set of players this century. In the net is Dumanovsky, who comes from the mountains of Marshlands County. His family lives on the Marshlands County National Reservation and tracks the dragons there for the federal government. He's also got great reflexes and has one of the highest penalty-blocking rates in the country. In the back is Hebert, who survived radiation poisoning when he was 15; Anderson and Ferrell, who don't necessarily have anything unique going on but are extremely good central defenders; and Bolton, who they say has the eyes of an eagle. Literally! His left eye was transplanted from an eagle. I suppose that means there's an eagle flying around with a human eye, too. In the center is Adkins, who is slightly crazy but most ("most") people appreciate his thoughtful political takes on social media; Hendricks, who has great musical chops in addition to his ability to intercept a long pass; and Sampson, who grew up in the Wilmington academy with Ethan Carey, giving them a great rapport that scores many goals. Left in the front is Savage, which you can probably guess from the name, and Shepherd, who, as a teenager, herded dragons in Manatee County while he got the golden boot in the Myrtle Beach U17 pyramid for the Shallotte RFA U17s. Overall they create one of the best football clubs fielded in Myrtle Beach this century and will certainly be contenders for the title for the next decade.

FAMB League One
Season 1 (2011-12)

In League One, only one team earns automatic promotion while the four teams below that one participate in a promotion playoff. The bottom two teams are relegated, like in the Core League. Lake Cooper FC and Crescent Beach FC are favorites for promotion, but Myrtle Beach Union, Wilmington United, and Shallotte are all contenders.

Teams
Brunson FC (Conway, Conway County)
Central Forest FC (Myrtle Beach, Conway County)
Central Union (Wilmington, Brunswick County)
Crescent Beach FC (North Myrtle Beach, Conway County)
Green Swamp FC (Parkersburg, Miller County)
Hampstead FC (Hampstead, Greensboro County)
Lake Cooper FC (Lake Cooper, Marshlands County)
Marshlands AFC (Johnsonville, Marshlands County)
Myrtle Beach Union AFC (Myrtle Beach, Conway County)
Shallotte RFA (Shallotte, Manatee County)
Whiteville FC (Whiteville, Georgetown County)

FAMB Core League
Matchday 1

Ah, the beginning of a brand-new season of Myrtle Beach football. A fresh new league has taken the mantle to be the home of the best of the best- hopefully, for more than six months this time around. There are fourteen matchdays this season, where each of the eight teams will play each other team twice. The top team at the end of the 14 weeks will take home the Mug of Victory, replacing the Champions' Dilapidated Wooden Shack of Celebration the last time the FAMB ran leagues in the 80s. I remember when I was a child and the winning team would parade the miniature shack, about eight cubic feet in size, through the streets of their hometown. The greatest time was when Shallotte won the League One (the top league at the time) back in '89, and they paraded the shack through their historic downtown (although most towns have those) when three guys rode their dragons in from the mountains and they went and did tricks and gave rides to the children in the town square. These days, though, we have a mug. For those of you who are not in the know, the Mug of Victory is based off of an old 19th-century folktale that originated around Lake Cooper, which told a story where the old General Robert Conway (yes, that one!) back in the 17th century first discovered the Lake Cooper dragons. Conway was leading an expedition team into the deep forests of the Myrtle Beach colony when they stumbled upon a great waterfall, towering what seemed like miles above them. The natives of the area came out to them and told them that a great storm was to come and this meant good things were coming. Then- the expedition party felt a rumble, and a great dragon came out from behind the waterfall and landed at the edge of the lake, right in front of Conway. It is said that the dragon was studying Conway, and there it decided that the man was honorable and that him and his kin should be accepted into the lands. Later the natives would come to regret this, but that's a story for another time (and one that has been told countless times throughout history!). The natives extracted some blood from the dragon, like syrup from a maple tree, and put it into a mug. They handed it to Conway and said that the blood of a dragon would transform and reinvigorate any man and that he would live for a thousand years with the strength of a dragon. Now, typically, if a group of shamans offers you a mysterious magical mixture, you say no, considering there's likely a catch, but Conway, being a curious and slightly dim man, drank the brew. Legend says it tasted terrible (it probably did), but Conway's youth was renewed (at this time he was 32), and he would live until the ripe old age of 110, dying in 1746. Some say he was reincarnated as a dragon, which I suppose could be either a blessing or a curse depending on who you ask.

Now that my life story's over, it's time for the brownie recipe. You've all seen the previews- we've got a collection of great teams here, plus a couple others, and they're bound to make some good football happen. This week could be one of the best because the first game of the season for each team is vital in the Core League because there are very few matches to be played. How the team starts the season will inevitably set the tone for the rest of the season. With that being said, here's your scorelines for Matchday 1:

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 2

Time for some football! This week particularly has been quite interesting in regards to the table and less so in regards to the games. Conway remains the last club in the Core League to have zero points after two weeks, losing away this week versus North Myrtle Beach and at home last week versus Southport County. They don't, at least, have the worst goal differential in the league- that honor belongs to Southport, who got pounded 0-5 by North Beach this week. As the season develops, we're starting to see some players come out of the woodwork and dominate the pitch. Peyton Petersen of North Beach scored a hattrick this week in the aforementioned match vs Southport, assisted twice by Hunter Fisher, who earned the Player of the Game for that game and the FAMB Core League Player of the Week award.

CBC Sports spoke with Fisher after he received the Player of the Week. He told us, in his characteristic country drawl, "Well, you know, sometimes if you play good you play good and you get good, yeah? They love it when a guy plays good, and so if you play good you get good, you know? But, yeah, that's what I got to say about that." The thing about this league, and football in general, that makes it so great is that an amazing player can come from anywhere. Fisher grew up in the swamps east of Conway, and despite his closeness to the city, he was fairly isolated from a lot of the Myrtle Beachian pop culture of the mid-2000s. He played soccer at his high school, and he was spotted by a semi-pro team and went to go play football with them while he did odd jobs around Conway County before he was found on an off chance by a desperate North Beach scout looking for a catch. And so, that was how Hunter Fisher, the stellar center-midfielder and country man, went to go play football in the big city. You could make a movie about it or something.

CBC Sports Football Previews

FAMB Core League
Season 2 (2012-13)

This season is bound to be strange. Next season, the Core League is expanding to ten teams, and so the FAMB has decided to not relegate any teams this season. Instead, two teams will rise from League One and none will go down to replace them, increasing the size of the FAMB Core League and decreasing the size of the FAMB League One. The teams are likely to still play like there is relegation, though; no player wants to play for a team that's on track for relegation next season, and IFCF spots are still in play. These previews were written before the FAMB released their decision to increase the size of the Core League.

Conway Wanderers FC
Conway, Conway County
Home kit: Blue and white; Away kit: White and blue; Third kit: Green and white
Head coach: Stanley Moore [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Matthew Buckner (MYR; 27yo), CB Cadenn Cain (MYR; 21yo), CB Aaron Witt (MYR; 23yo), CB Janika van der Stedd (PDT; 30yo), CB Stan Zidarić (PDT; 30yo), DM/CB Justin Mathis (MYR; 22yo), CM Parker Bradshaw (MYR; 28yo), CM Isaac Robbins (MYR; 28yo), RM Jonathan Mann (MYR; 30yo), LW Corey Holman (MYR; 28yo), CF Craig Benson (MYR; 21yo)

Last season Conway placed third, but it was more of a fluke than anything. They had seven ties against just four wins. If they want to win the league and make it far in IFCF play, they're going to have to find some young talent that can produce for them long-term. So, after an early exit in the IFCF Challengers Cup, Stanley Moore cleaned house in the center-backs and picked up Aaron Witt, who was jumping ship from Brunswick. An excellent signing from a player whose potential was wasted at a terrible club, and time will tell if he can produce when surrounded with high-level players and facilities on his own team rather than the other one. Then, Moore signed two aging centerbacks from Paradystopia. This signing was a bit more unusual, but time will tell if the quality of play in the Paradystopi league is truly better than top-level play in Myrtle Beach. But, even with so much uncertainty in the defense, Conway has a clear path to the top. We predict Conway will finish second in the Core League.

Georgetown FC
Georgetown, Georgetown County
Home kit: Black and orange; Away kit: White and red; Third kit: White and orange
Head coach: Luke Stanley [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Timothy Haynes (MYR; 28yo), RB Edward White (MYR; 24yo), LB Blake Hatfield (MYR; 25yo), CB Logan Becker (MYR; 21yo), CB Nathan Boyd (MYR; 26yo), DM/CB Tyler Summers (MYR; 24yo), DM/CB Kevin Waller (MYR; 21yo), CM Donald Garrett (MYR; 26yo), CF Edmund White (PDT; 26yo), CF Jordan Gislington (TKT; 25yo), CF Marcus Robbins (MYR; 23yo)

Georgetown landed squarely in the middle of the table last season, so it seems that Luke Stanley has decided to pivot the team in a different direction this season. A more offensive one, specifically, with the international signings of Edmund White of Paradystopia and Jordan Gislington of Tikariot. The transfer of Gislington costed 2.3 million pounds, so clearly Stanley is seeking the Mug of Victory, but if Georgetown can't sort out their issues in the midfield, particularly after Donald Garrett's postseason injury and some poor form in friendlies by the defensive midfielders, they're looking to go low. We predict Georgetown will finish fourth in the Core League; right in the middle.

Marshlands AFC
Johnsonville, Marshlands County
Home kit: Yellow and black; Away kit: Black and yellow; Third kit: Green and red
Head coach: Kyle Roberson [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Marcus Adkins (MYR; 24yo), CB Owen Shaw (MYR; 29yo), CB Edward Farmer (MYR; 27yo), CB Adrian Moore (MYR; 20yo), RM David Brewer (MYR; 25yo), CM Drew Bowers (MYR; 30yo), CM Jackson Boyer (MYR; 29yo), LM Man Cannon (MYR; 24yo), RW Curtis Curtis (MYR; 26yo), CF Scott Chapman (MYR; 21yo), LM Kyle Craig (MYR; 25yo).

Marshlands just became champions of League One and got the very large trophy and medals that came with it. Next season, they'll do it again! Marshlands' aging squad and weak defense are going to be the death of them in the Core League, although young prodigy Scott Chapman in front could allow Marshlands to tough it out in the top league and attract some top talent in the post-season transfer window. There are still ten others on the pitch, though, so it's likely one person is not going to allow the entire team to stay afloat. Money, though, likely won't be a problem, as some of these names on their team will attract lots of attention, like mediocre winger Curtis Curtis and fairly good midfielder Man Cannon, whose main weakness is having a fairly weak leg. We predict Marshlands will finish eighth in the Core League.

North Beach FC
Myrtle Beach, Conway County
Home kit: Orange and white; Away kit: Black and orange; Third kit: Light blue and orange (yes it is ugly)
Head coach: Harvey Stewart [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Matthew Reid (MYR; 22yo), RB Nolan Ellis (MYR; 30yo), CB Mitchell Crane (MYR; 29yo), CB Ashton Hatfield (MYR; 23yo), LB Colin Noble (MYR; 24yo), CM/DM Nolan Goodman (MYR; 24yo), CM Robert Butler (MYR; 28yo), CM Hunter Fisher (MYR; 21yo), CF Morton Hook (PDT; 20yo), CF John Henry (MYR; 28yo), ST Peyton Petersen (MYR; 24yo)

Last season, North Beach ended on the bubble, just two points away from a shot at international glory. This year, they're changing things up to make the final push into the top three. The addition of Paradystopi center-forward Morton Hook now allows head coach Harvey Stewart to implement a 4-3-2-1 formation featuring Golden Boot winner Peyton Petersen. Fan-favorite Hunter Fisher also returns, having an impressive performance in pre-season friendlies that could lead to big gains for North Beach in the midfield. We predict North Beach will finish third in the Core League.

North Myrtle Beach AFC
North Myrtle Beach, Conway County
Home kit: Blue, dark blue, white (b/db striped); Away kit: Green, dark green, white (g/dg striped); Third kit: Light blue and black
Head coach: Louis Taylor [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Maxwell Nelson (MYR; 34yo), RB Nathaniel Dillon (MYR; 25yo), CB Keith Peck (MYR; 28yo), CB Brendan Woods (MYR; 22yo), LB Brandon Mann (MYR; 20yo), DM Spencer Bridges (MYR; 25yo), DM Marcus Charles (MYR; 20yo), CM Dimitri Vodoleyev (MYR; 24yo), CF William Fo (MYR; 20yo), CF Timothy Golden (MYR; 21yo), CF Mason Hicks (MYR; 21yo)

North Myrtle Beach went far beyond any expectations last season, placing second. However, as always seems to happen... nothing gold can stay. Last season's head coach, Samuel Perry, left the organization after a spat with ownership and went to newly promoted side Shallotte RFA. Perry, for those unaware, led North Myrtle Beach to two titles in 2000 and 2001 during the Super League era (1990-2001) and three National League titles in 2002, 2006, and 2010 during the National League era (2001-2010). His presence will be sorely missed in North Myrtle Beach. It is particularly surprising that none of the players at North Myrtle Beach followed him to Shallotte, but the decision was late in the transfer window and it is likely that there was simply no chance for them to move. The form of these players is likely to be terrible, at least in the beginning, and the outside hire of head coach Louis Taylor with no previous head-coaching experience will likely compound North Myrtle's woes. We predict North Myrtle Beach will finish fifth in the Core League.

Shallotte RFA
Shallotte, Manatee County
Home kit: Light purple and light blue; Away kit: Dark purple and white; Third kit: Black with white text and light blue stripes
Head coach: Samuel Perry [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Nicholas Pope (MYR; 26yo), CB Ernest Meadows (MYR; 25yo), CB Jamie Andrews (MYR; 23yo), DM/CB Dylan Logan (MYR; 20yo), RM Brett Farmer (MYR; 21yo), CM Farmer Man (MYR; 25yo), CM Nicholas Leon (MYR; 24yo), LM Scott Scott (MYR; 27yo), RW Arthur Dunn (MYR; 23yo), LW Daniel Shepherd (MYR; 21yo), CF Log Man (MYR; 29yo)

Shallotte comes up to the top flight for the first time in club history with one goal: prove that they belong. Under the leadership of former North Myrtle Beach head coach Samuel Perry, it's looking like they may prove that. They have a solid roster filled with National League all-stars like Log Man (2007, 2008) and Scott Scott (2008), and they have been in great form during friendlies. Finally making it to the top flight has obviously invigorated this team to achieve what was previous, in their minds, unachievable, and for Perry and the team, relegation is unacceptable. And they may just make it out of the dreaded relegation zone. We predict Shallotte will finish sixth in the Core League.

Southport County FC
Southport, Southport County
Home kit: Brown and white; Away kit: Black and white; Third kit: White and brown
Head coach: Jake Atkinson [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Keith Tanner (MYR; 32yo), RB Oscar Harris (MYR; 27yo), CB Jason Buckner (MYR; 30yo), CB Tanner Koch (MYR; 21yo), LB Randy Bolton (MYR; 26yo), CM Aaron Evans (MYR; 25yo), CM Samuel Hyde (MYR; 20yo), CM Mark Carey (MYR; 26yo), RW Douglas Simon (MYR; 29yo), LW Drew Becker (MYR; 23yo), CF Luka Chukchov (MYR; 22yo)
Other notable players: CM Brody Jordan (MYR; 30yo)

Southport is one of those teams which has its moments of glory, but they are overall pretty poor, even for Myrtle Beach standards. Much of the Southport team is aging, and certainly not gracefully. They have a tendency to make simple mistakes and fall to young, immature teams just due to speed. More accurately, their lack of it. Some domestic transfers are not going to be enough to save Southport from going low. We predict Southport will finish seventh in the Core League.

Wilmington AFC
Wilmington, Brunswick County
Home kit: Green and red; Away kit: White and red; Third kit: White and green
Head coach: Reed Shepard [MYR]
Starting XI: GK Boris Dumanovsky (MYR; 26yo), CB Sean Hebert (MYR; 22yo), CB Richard Anderson (MYR; 29yo), CB Joseph Ferrell (MYR; 25yo), CB Jason Carambana (TKT; 19yo), CM Jacob Adkins (MYR; 28yo), CM Edgar Hendricks (MYR; 23yo), CM Jesus Sampson (MYR; 23yo), RW Ethan Carey (MYR; 25yo), LW Terrence Savage (MYR; 23yo), CF Nathan Shepherd (MYR; 25yo)

Wilmington remains the undisputed greatest team in Myrtle Beach right now going into season 2. With likely the greatest collection of talent in Myrtle Beach, they will surely top the table again, especially with star center-forward Nathan Shepherd in his prime and CBC S1 Player of the Season Boris Dumanovsky in the back. One peculiar transfer was that of rookie 19-year-old Jason Carambana of the Tikariot City FC Academy. Now, despite what the rankings say, Tikariot is one of the best footballing nations around, but a signing fresh out of the academy of a mid-table team is still a bit strange for some fans to swallow. Still, with the support of defensive powerhouses like Joseph Ferrell and Richard Anderson, Carambana is sure to develop well in Wilmington and grow to become yet another defensive powerhouse for Wilmington in the future. Or a large profit; Wilmington only got Carambana for half a million pounds, which is nothing compared to Georgetown's 2.3 million pound transaction for Jordan Gislington from a TPL team that almost got relegated last season. We predict Wilmington will finish first in the Core League.

FAMB League One
Season 2 (2012-13)

In League One, only one team earns automatic promotion while the four teams below that one participate in a promotion playoff. The bottom two teams are relegated, like in the Core League. Last season, Shallotte and Marshlands went up while Brunson FC and Wilmington United went down. This season, Myrtle Beach FC, Myrtle Beach Union, Lake Cooper, and Crescent Beach are favorites to go up.

Teams
Brunswick County AFC (Wilmington, Brunswick County)
Central Forest FC (Myrtle Beach, Conway County)
Central Union (Wilmington, Brunswick County)
Crescent Beach FC (North Myrtle Beach, Conway County)

Matchday 1

Run from it, dread it... it comes all the same. Football is back, and it's bound to be stranger than ever. Brothers Log Man and Farmer Man (what names!) kicked off their Core League debut with an absolute bang, with Log Man scoring the first hattrick of the season for Shallotte, two of the goals being assisted by Farmer Man. Additionally, every goal of that hattrick was scored in the second half! Shallotte went into halftime down three against North Myrtle and ended the game with a 4-3 win. Not only is that an offensive masterclass under pressure, it's also an excellent show of defense. Now, they just need to apply that in the first half as well, and that team will have an excellent and bright future in the Core League, especially with the quality of their youth academy.

Wilmington also kicked off the season with a win after their excellent quarterfinal finish in the Hui Lā. Winger Terrence Savage in particular had an excellent game, scoring two goals and one assist after having five goals and three assists last season. He is certainly looking to prove himself as a must-have winger, especially with the potential for Wilmington to explore even more in the international transfer window after the season; the purchasing of Jason Carambana of Tikariot is just the beginning. Wilmington owner Larry Owen told CBC on Wednesday, "[Wilmington AFC] will become the next internationally-renowned, multi-billion dollar club known across worlds as one of the greatest names in football. Even children from Chromatika will dream of playing here." He added, "I will do whatever it takes to win. If I must, I will buy a roster of the best football players in Arrosia and naturalize them all as Myrtle Beachians... failure is not an option." Owen has been owner of Wilmington since 1989.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 2

This week was certainly a treat for those of us who enjoy football. All four matches this week were exciting and competitive. The week kicked off with a 5-4 thriller between North Beach and Shallotte. An impressive hattrick by new signing Morton Hook out of Paradystopia delivered the win to North Beach and puts them in second behind favorites Wilmington. Hook appears to be getting along well with the rest of the team, and also appears to particularly be forming a connection with Hunter Fisher, who assisted him on two of his three goals from the match. Then, Southport and North Myrtle kept it close and low-scoring, becoming a defensive master-class. Marcus Charles, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder from Miller County, took home his first Player of the Game award ever, likely being in his best form ever during his tenure in the Core League.

Then, Wilmington and Georgetown played. Most expected Wilmington to blow out Georgetown, but Georgetown was able to keep the score close in the face of massive offensive pressure. Unfortunately for Georgetown, their offense was just incapable of producing anything, even with their massive off-season foreign signings of Jordan Gislington of Tikariot and Edmund White of Paradystopia. The game ended 2-1, a massive win simply slipping out of the hands of Georgetown. The day ended with a shocking tie between Conway and Marshlands. Marshlands proved they belonged with this game; Conway was kept playing catch-up the entire game while Scott Chapman scored a hattrick and walked away with both the Player of the Game and the Player of the Week awards for this week. Chapman is only 21, and so it appears that he will be a young player to watch going into the 101st World Cup cycle and beyond, with Marshlands potentially becoming a contender for the title in the future. That is, as long as they don't squander it away as many have before...

The League One continues with Myrtle Beach FC not on top, surprisingly. Crescent Beach extended their winstreak to four games with wins over Myrtle and Brunswick, both former Core League teams relegated at the end of last season. If they manage to keep their momentum going the whole season and get promoted, they may be a formidable mid-table opponent in the expanded 10-team Core League.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 3

This week was more uneventful than the last, but there was still some good football in the mix. North Myrtle Beach was able to hold Wilmington to a tie, thanks in part to an impressive performance from center-back Brendan Woods shutting down many of Wilmington's attacks. Last season his performance was lackluster, but it appears that he has been doing work over the offseason; his form is far better in these first three weeks than it has been previously. Additionally, Marshlands pulled up an impressive upset over North Beach, Southport finally puts up their first goals, losing against Shallotte who scored four goals over Southport's three, and Conway held off Georgetown, putting them up to third with a positive goal differential, which is always great this early.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 4

This week in football, Southport County's woes compound as they continue their losing streak for a fourth game, this time losing it against North Beach. Fortunately, there were signs of life, with an active midfield and a majestic early goal from Luka Chukchov giving hope to Southport fans that perhaps the worst may be over. There is still much more football yet to be played, though. Additionally, Terrence Savage tears it up in Wilmington, taking home a third Player of the Game plaque (it's the thought that counts) and scoring two goals, putting him tied for first with Log Man and super Scott Chapman (both of whom played in the League One last season) in the race for the golden boot. Janika van der Stedd's valiant performance for Conway allowed the club to go home with a point and a Player of the Game plaque for the Paradystopi center-back. And finally, Georgetown managed to shut out the explosive Marshlands team in the Marshlands, an impressive feat for a team that has at times this season seemed not so impressive. In other news, Myrtle Beach FC appears to be floundering in the League One, sitting at eighth right now with 11 points. Evidently, even all the money in the world can't help you if your team is just bad.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 5

This week in football, it was about damn time for Luka Chukchov to start performing for Southport County. Chukchov put three in past world-class keeper Boris Dumanovsky to give Wilmington their second tie of the season. Chukchov was assisted by the Southport midfield, who was in good form today, especially Sam Hyde, but ultimately it was the Chukchov show in the unincorporated land outside Southport where the land was cheaper. It would have been a loss had it not been for Terrence Savage, the killer winger who tore up the pitch in Southport, putting up two goals to keep Wilmington in it. He, also, almost scored a hattrick, with those aforementioned two goals and an additional assist with Nathan Shepherd. If I were making decisions in the Wilmington front office, I would make it a priority to try to pick up Chukchov for the front to replace the increasingly in poor form winger Ethan Carey and leave the big international signings for the ailing defense.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 6

This week in football, Southport County appears to be looking to topple giants this week. Despite a lesser performance this week, Luka Chukchov took home a second consecutive Player of the Week plaque in a win over Conway Wanderers, who were just in terrible form during the match. This week also saw an impressive shutout of Shallotte by Marshlands, with Marshlands goalkeeper Marcus Adkins trying to save the world (and succeeding). He stopped seven shots on target throughout the match. The Marshlands defense did leave much to be desired, though, and without Adkins they probably would have lost 8-2. Boris Dumanovsky had an impressive performance for Wilmington this week, at least relative to the rest of the team, who appeared to be in poor form. They still won, though, and an impressive goal from Terrence Savage puts him back in undisputed first place for the Golden Boot.

In the League One, Myrtle Beach FC is bringing it back after a spat of poor form. They did only come off this week with four points instead of a desired six, but ultimately, any points are good points. They are now in the promotion playoff spots. The promotion playoff is incredibly brutal and difficult, even for such a strong club like Myrtle, so obviously the desire is for automatic promotion. Unfortunately, only the champion gets automatically promoted, and Crescent Beach has completely latched on to the first place spot with no intention of letting it go over the past few weeks. They are currently only one point ahead of second-place Lake Cooper FC, though, so we'll see.

The first real cup matches were played this week as well. The Myrtle Beach Steak Club shocked the nation with a win over North Beach FC; a commanding one at that. A 3-0 win against an opponent like that is a good sign, but time will tell if that was just a fluke. In two weeks they will play League One side Greensboro FC, then the winner of that match will play either Hampstead FC or Georgetown FC. Additionally, Marshlands AFC fell to Rock-on-West-Hill FC. It's not as much of a gap as North Beach and the Steak Club, but it's still a very impressive win for the League Two side. These clubs could be clubs to watch in the coming seasons.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 7

This week in football, Luka Chukchov keeps winning even as Southport keeps sinking. Chukchov scored his second hattrick in three weeks against Marshlands, and likely would have won another Player of the Week plaque for the third consecutive week had it not been for Scott Chapman of the Marshlands also scoring a hattrick in the same match. Chapman did end up taking home that great plaque, his second this season to pair nicely with his second hattrick of the season. Despite all this, Terrence Savage has remained one step ahead of the pack in the race for the Golden Boot, staying as the undisputed first place with two goals in a tie versus Conway this week. But, while this all seems nice now, I would be worried about the future if I were in the front office in Southport or Johnsonville. Chukchov and Chapman have clearly outperformed the rest of their teams, and if Southport and Marshlands can't find players to rise to their level, they may seek greener pastures overseas. Perhaps they could join their fellow Myrtle Beachians in Valanora or Auprussia. Southport is particularly lucky that there is no relegation this season. I expect they will be digging deep to throw some serious cash onto the transfer window after this season.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 8

This week in football, someone really needs to find out who casted a hex on Southport. They have been on a run of great form and yet it seems as if they have been incapable of making anything happen. As we move into the second half of the season, though, things change. These small bursts of form become less impactful and long-term gains become the biggest source of success. It is unlikely that Southport will be able to keep up this run of great form, even with Luka Chukchov seemingly scoring every goal in the world right now and with Sam Hyde taking home the player of the week plaque this week after a highly impressive performance in the win versus Georgetown. The prediction markets still have Southport landing in the relegation spots at the end of the season (or at least, where they would be), so perhaps the scriptwriters know something we don't. In other news, the Wilmington squad appears to be faltering. They have given away draws that should have been wins and have almost lost some matches throughout the last few weeks. Remember, Wilmington is undefeated in the Core League. A loss could spell trouble in the squad and trouble for head coach Reed Shepard. Their international signing from Tikariot, center-back Jason Carambana, has not been panning out the way they want it, and much of the squad is older than the ideal. They are still favored to win, but on paper this squad should be crushing the opposition. Shepard will need to really consider his lineup and think about who will soon no longer be able to play the game, at least at this level.

Also, in cup news, Wilmington's woes compound as they fall to League One side Green Swamp FC, who is currently in last place in the League One. It's not a good sign for the number one side in the top league to be falling to the number twelve side in the second division. I hear there are some coaches available overseas... Also, the Steak Club has won again over Greensboro FC. Their improbable run continues into the quarterfinals where they will play and probably lose to Georgetown FC. The quarterfinals will be in two weeks, matchweek 10.

Player of the Week: Samuel Hyde (Southport County AFC)
Center-midfielder Samuel Hyde showcased impressive control of the pitch for Southport County in their win this week over Georgetown FC. Hyde kept the tempo of the game up for the entire 90 minutes, keeping the pressure on the Georgetown defense and helping prevent the Georgetown offense from mounting huge counter-attacks. Hyde proved himself an invaluable asset to Southport and their excellent recent offensive form, especially in the face of an ailing defense which has proven itself incapable of stopping goals and preventing huge losses for Southport. If Hyde can channel this energy to support his other teammates, Southport may be able to salvage their season.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 9

This week in football, Olympus has fallen. I have no idea what has gotten into this Wilmington team this past month, but it appears to have reached a climax with their first loss in Core League competition. This ties them with North Myrtle Beach on the table in points and goal difference, only beating them in goals scored. Wilmington have Luka Chukchov to thank for keeping them in first, as he was able to score both Southport's goals against North Myrtle Beach to make it a one-score game when the final whistle sounded. Wilmington need to have some kind of come-to-Jesus meeting about what is going wrong, or else they will risk slipping into a downward spiral that can easily watch them slip to the bottom half of the table. There is only a six-point difference between Wilmington and sixth-place Conway, and there are still five more weeks of football yet to be played. Although, as luck will have it, next week Wilmington and North Myrtle play in Wilmington. If Wilmington wins, they will remain in first, but if they lose, they will slip to at least second and, worst case, fourth.

Player of the Week: Jordan Gislington [TKT] (Georgetown FC)
Striker Jordan Gislington at Georgetown FC has, so far, not necessarily been able to prove their skill in Myrtle Beach just yet. That is, until now. Despite just scoring one goal in a win over defending champions Wilmington AFC, they kept the pressure on for the entire match, forcing Wilmington to work to keep the score manageable. This is something we simply have not seen from this Georgetown offense all season. On the rare chance they did get solid possession of the ball, they would often be unable to push past defense and produce a strong offensive result. The change in form in this match came at a pivotal time in the season and produced extremely impressive football that outclassed much of what was seen across the league this week. Gislington was at the forefront of this push; they were able to force the Wilmington defense to work overtime the entire match. This led to exhaustion among the defense, allowing Gislington to slip a goal in at the 89th minute.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 10

This week in football, it appears that the foreigners are coming to take our jobs. Morton Hook of Paradystopia put up an impressive performance for North Beach to an electric crowd at home versus the Marshlands, and the young Jason Carambana from Tikariot, fresh out of the academy, has finally begun to produce somewhat for Wilmington on defense. Putting him directly on the starting lineup was certainly a questionable decision at the beginning of the season, but I suppose some people do just need a baptism by fire to kickstart their process. He will need time to develop, but may become an excellent defender for Wilmington over the next few seasons. He certainly has sound guidance at the hands of legacy center-back Richard Anderson, who is also starting with him on Wilmington.

Player of the Week: Parker Bradshaw (Conway Wanderers FC)
Midfielder Parker Bradshaw of Conway Wanderers FC showcased impressive control of game flow in this week's 1-0 win over Georgetown FC. Bradshaw significantly contributed to the consistent and significant possession of the ball that Conway had throughout the game- exceeding 65% over Georgetown. Bradshaw was additionally able to take possession of the ball away from Georgetown during passes and during periods of indeterminate possession, resulting in several shots on target for Conway, including the sole goal scored over the course of the game by Corey Holman.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 11

This week in football, there was a little something for everyone. For enjoyers of offense, Luka Chukchov scored his umpteenth hattrick this season in Southport's 5-2 win over North Beach. Although, it wasn't all Chukchov since there were also significant contributions on offense from Sam Hyde, Drew Becker, and Mark Carey. And yet, somehow, Southport still remains at the bottom of the table. At this point, you really have to consider if the players are the problem here. Southport has a good collection of talent, better than some other teams in the league, and so it ultimately just looks like a problem of poor team management at the hands of head coach Jake Atkinson. Last season, it did look like the players were the problem, but after eleven weeks this season it's looking like a change has occurred in the minds of many. Not, however, in the mind of team ownership. Southport owner Mark Carney told CBC earlier this week that Southport "completely trusts" Atkinson and has no intention on seeking coaching change during the off-season. Atkinson is obviously also resistant to changing much of his roster, but with the aging squad he has at his hands, he'll have to do something eventually or risk an exodus of the young talent that is pushing Southport forward. When asked on social media whether he would consider a transfer, Luka Chukchov simply responded with a thinking emoji. It's not necessarily the position you want this team to be in, especially this close to the off-season.

Now, for enjoyers of defense, we saw some impressive defense from Conway and Wilmington this week. There was excellent synergy between the defensive backs and the midfield for those teams, which ultimately contributed to their victories (or, in the case of Conway, tie). It was refreshing to see good defense from Wilmington for the first time in some time, especially with how ineffective they have been lately. Obviously the loss two weeks ago lit a fire under them, and they're out for blood. Hopefully, this means we'll be back to seeing excellent all-around gameplay from Wilmington like we saw last season.

Player of the Week: Jesus Sampson (Wilmington AFC)
Midfielder Jesus Sampson of Wilmington AFC controlled the game in this week's 2-0 win versus Shallotte RFA. Rarely did the ball ever pass through the midfield without his involvement. Through his leadership in the midfield, Shallotte was unable to mount any major attacks for the majority of the game, and when they tried, he was able to punish them. Both of the goals scored by Wilmington in this game came from counterattacks initiated by Sampson. He proved himself this week to be a valuable asset to Wilmington's offense and defense, and he showcased an impressive variety of skills that is rare throughout the league. Many players simply have one or two skills they have mastered, but Sampson is clearly proving himself to be a master of many, which he showed this week.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 12

This week in football, it's over. With this week's impressive win over Southport, Wilmington has punched their ticket to the IFCF Champions League and has won the FAMB Core League once again. It was uncertain for a moment, but the Wilmington faithful held through and they have been rewarded for their perseverance. Additionally, the League One has ended. Unfortunately for Sisyphus FC, they pushed their rock nearly to the top of the mountain, but tumbled down to sixth in the last moment and so will not be participating in the promotion playoff. Myrtle Beach FC won the league and will return to the FAMB Core League next season. If Myrtle Beach Union wins the promotion playoffs, then both Myrtle and Union will be in the Core League at the same time, which will surely produce large amounts of entertaining madness among the fans. It was always questionable when the FAMB decided not to let Union into the Core League in the beginning, given that the Myrtle/Union match is likely the biggest rivalry in Myrtle Beach. Both Myrtle/Union games in the League One drew a larger viewership than many Core League games. Myrtle is clearly going to be back for blood next season, and they're likely going to spend hundreds of millions overseas to buy the best international talent there is and win the league.

North Beach FC 1 - 1 Georgetown FC
Player of the Game: Matthew Reid (North Beach)
SCORERS:
North Beach:
  • 69' P. Petersen
Georgetown:
  • 17' Edm. White [PDT] assisted by D. Garrett

Marshlands AFC 1 - 1 North Myrtle Beach AFC
Player of the Game: Scott Chapman (Marshlands)
SCORERS:
Marshlands:
  • 54' S. Chapman assisted by J. Boyer
North Myrtle:
  • 81' W. Fo

Conway Wanderers FC 3 - 1 Shallotte RFA
Player of the Game: Justin Mathis (Conway)
SCORERS:
Conway:
  • 29' C. Benson
  • 49' C. Benson
  • 83' J. Mann assisted by I. Robbins
Shallotte:
  • 64' L. Man

Wilmington AFC 3 - 1 Southport County FC
Player of the Game: Boris Dumanovsky (Wilmington)
SCORERS:
Wilmington:
  • 28' E. Carey
  • 61' N. Shepherd assisted by T. Savage
  • 83' N. Shepherd
Southport:
  • 72' D. Becker

Player of the Week: Boris Dumanovsky (Wilmington AFC)
Goalkeeper Boris Dumanovsky of Wilmington AFC did the impossible in this week's 3-1 win over Southport County FC: stop Luka Chukchov. Even in the face of constant assault from the Southport offense with little help from the ailing Wilmington defense, Dumanovsky effortlessly blocked shot after shot. Even penalties did not make it past him. Even Chukchov, who has proved to be a menace to goalkeepers everywhere in the second half of this season, was unable to find his way around Dumanovsky. For some time now, it has become questionable whether or not Dumanovsky deserved to keep his title as best goalkeeper in Myrtle Beach. With these past few weeks, however, Dumanovsky has increasingly proved that some things truly do get better with age. This game was simply the cherry on top; here, Dumanovsky told Myrtle Beach and the world, "I'll see you in the World Cup."

So I copied the formatting from last season, and since there was no cup last season, the top two teams went to the Hui La. But since I'm simulating the cup this season, that means the league champion and cup winner go to the Hui La, not first and second. The table has been changed to reflect this.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 13

This week in football, we're still talking about Luka Chukchov. Southport has finally been able to escape last place, thanks in part to Chukchov scoring just about every goal ever, but they are still in seventh and will be unable to dig themselves out of the hole they are in. Chukchov scored another hattrick this week, the fourth this season, and yet Southport's fates have not changed one bit. Something will have to change at Southport if they want to stay up next season; clearly whatever they have been doing is untenable. They're lucky there's no relegation this season. If they can't keep Chukchov from going to the transfer window, they could see an exodus of much of their talent and drop deep into the trenches of the League One or even League Two. In other news, it looks like Chukchov has locked in the Golden Boot for this season, and the IFCF Challengers Cup slots appear to still be anyone's game. Conway will play Wilmington next week, and if they win then they will once again punch their ticket to the Challengers Cup.

Wilmington AFC 2 - 2 North Beach FC
Player of the Game: Morton Hook [PDT] (North Beach)
SCORERS:
Wilmington:
  • 15' E. Carey
  • 68' T. Savage
North Beach:

  • 73' L. Man
  • 90+1' L. Man assisted by S. Scott
Marshlands:

Player of the Game: Marcus Charles (North Myrtle)
SCORERS:
North Myrtle:
  • 19' W. Fo assisted by D. Vodoleyev
  • 60' W. Fo

Player of the Week: Morton Hook [PDT] (North Beach FC)
Forward Morton Hook of North Beach FC was perfectly able to rout the Wilmington defense in North Beach's 2-2 tie with them this week. The Wilmington defense has a lot of weaknesses, but to the lesser offensive player in the moment, they may not be immediately exploitable. But, they are, and Hook was able to scramble the ailing defense, enabling North Beach to put in two goals, one by Hook himself and one by Peyton Petersen. The pressure that Hook applied to the Wilmington defense forced them to play catch-up the entire game, and while North Beach wasn't able to get a win out of it, they were at least able to get a valuable point out of it.

FAMB Core League
Matchweek 14 & Review

This week in football, Wilmington officially takes home the Mug of Victory for a second time, and Scott Chapman was given the Player of the Season award. Every season there is one player who comes up from the lower leagues who makes you think, "How could this guy not have been picked up by a big club?" Chapman is one of those people. While yes, Log Man and Shallotte were impressive, Chapman's skill simply exceeded the ability of Log Man. Chapman likely was what brought Marshlands up to fourth; Marshlands has a good roster, but it's not nearly as powerful as North Beach or Shallotte. Yet, they placed ahead of both those teams and were in competition for an IFCF ticket up until the very last whistle blew. They shocked the entire footballing world in Myrtle Beach. Next season will be incredibly interesting if they can keep this form. They will probably need a better defense, but there are plenty of players lining up to get out of Georgetown, so it probably won't be a struggle for head coach Kyle Roberson to put together a team that can challenge the title. Of course, time will tell if a mostly home-grown squad will be able to go toe-to-toe against a hopefully improved Wilmington defense next year or whatever melting pot Myrtle Beach FC shows up with next year.

Also, Conway has won the FAMB Cup. It's not as big as an accomplishment this year as in the past, considering the FAMB has locked it to professional clubs only for the last few years, but it's still an impressive feat that allows them to punch their ticket to the Cup Winners Cup and the Hui Lā in addition to their ticket to the IFCF Challengers Cup. Now, like last time, Conway will likely see an early exit from IFCF competition. But you never know... crazier things have happened. Perhaps they can go drink dragon's blood or see a shaman for good luck.

Player of the Week: Hunter Fisher (North Beach FC)
Midfielder Hunter Fisher of North Beach FC was the driving force in the creation of a strong midfield backbone to North Beach's offense in their 3-2 win against North Myrtle Beach AFC. While Fisher did not directly get any assists or goals, he was a key playmaker for North Beach this game in a way he really hasn't been all season. He successfully took momentum away from North Myrtle and moved it into counterattacks that enabled the North Beach offense to threaten goals, forcing the North Myrtle defense to work hard to avoid runaway scoring. What really set Fisher apart from the rest of the league, however, was his ability to seemingly effortlessly force North Myrtle to lose possession in a way that has been rare throughout the league. Even when North Myrtle appeared to be unstoppable and on their way to score, Fisher was still able to stop the push and take the ball back for North Beach. This was a major contributor to North Beach's commanding control of the game which enabled their win this week.

Player of the Season: Scott Chapman (Marshlands AFC)
Golden Boot: Luka Chukchov (19 goals; Southport County FC)
Very Large Consolation Award: Luka Chukchov (Southport County FC)

S2 MUG OF VICTORY: Wilmington AFC (2nd) (7/5/2)
