The Car-Free movement and more walkable cities

Postby Islas Malvinas y Antartida Argentina » Tue Nov 11, 2025 6:38 pm

I won't explain the car-free movement too in-depth so here is the wikipedia page for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car-free_movement
So, basically, the car-free movement has blown up recently (if you consider the last few decades recent), which is opposition to cars because of their enviromental, economic and safety effects. What are you guys' opinion on making cities more walkable and car dependency? Mine would NOT be banning cars, but making public transportation better so it can become more convenient than using a car. However, we should restrict (NOT BAN) the use of large SUVs', pickups and large crossovers on high density areas, and make more pedestrian streets.

No. We should instead get rid of sidewalks and crosswalks in general. Everyone will own a Toyota Prius.

Freedom is best with having numerous ways to commute and move around. Cars are comfortable and reliable, but expecting 10 million people to get to work with only a Toyota can only go so well before you need to bulldoze half the city to house them.

Public transit brings people who can't, don't and shouldn't drive to work easily. Denser housing and apartments houses people who don't and can't maintain a house, or want a fairly standard life. Cities should be built for the residents in them, not for others in the area.

I dont think improving mass transit, and car ownership are mutually exclusive ideas. That said you will take my Subarus out of my cold dead hands.

About cars as transit, it oughta be just one of the forms of transportation, not the primary one. Like I would imagine the ideal scenario would be that you walk around the corner to get groceries, you bike a mile or two to visit a friend's house, you take the tram/subway/etc. to get to the other side of town, you drive to visit family an hour or two away, and you take the train to go visit NYC on a vacation.

Before you ban cars... have you considered the joy of a man's first donut on an empty track? That would make me reconsider

The “community based alternatives to policing” progressives crowd should be asking Curtis for advice. There are some spots on the Minneapolis-St.Paul light rail that could use a guardian angle or two.

But this thread is about car bans. I vote no, but I don’t mind making cites more walkable. I say this as a permanent and lifelong non-driver

Our country is reliant on car infrastructure for literally everything and it shows in the destruction of the third place, and the weird and hellish subdividing of towns and cities.

Can confirm about the overreliance on automobiles; it's literally impossible for me to walk to my school without jaywalking across this road.

Bad land use is the worst enemy of public transit and walkability. Cars are actually the best form of transportation for some commuters because living near where they need to be is unaffordable (or perhaps the places they want to go are scattered across the city) and providing affordable, high quality public transportation to meet these needs would be far too expensive for the city. It really comes down to zoning; reducing the problem to a mere consumer choice (offering public transit or revoking driving rights) is too simplistic and somewhat naïve.

The left needs to make a choice. Do they want more cops on public transportation, or community-based alternatives that are based on the Guardian Angels? People want to feel safe on public transportation. Now, the left needs to acknowledge that if we are going to implement alternatives to traditional police scenes for public safety, this means the possibility of a person that tries to snatch a person’s bag or purse may get a firm punch to the face in order to subdue them or at least get tackled and detained. They may be asked to give back the bag. If they oblige, they may be told to get out of sight. This avoids an arrest record but also has some level of accountability.
This nation will be retired soon.

What can i say? This is very bleak, cities want to concentrate people on unreliable public transportation to collect revenue and monopolize their movements, and expose them to disease contagion and casual pickpocketing, then they will make excuses to place surveillance cameras everywhere. This is not life. This is not even how i imagine the future it should be, it should have self driving cars, EV cars and hydrogen trucks.

More like the country is reliant on car tickets fees, it's the local governments that are going to lose a lot of money if they cannot enforce parking tickets anymore. There are small towns whose these car tickets represent a crucial funding source, and they will not be able to fund schools and hospitals without car infrastructure.

You know the only other way would be to monopolize public transport and collect all fundings without caring for passenger comfort and safety? And you're not more dependent on cars than you are dependent on your fridge, it's yours and represents your self expression, your Volitional Eudaimonia whose values i champion. What self expression can you give to a government bus? You lose a lot of autonomy and identity
