Captina pull ahead at top of table, control own fate
The Captina Company Press Association

The Captina Company National Team defeated Eshialand on matchday 13 to gain control of Group 30 with four day of competition remaining, but will need to be wary of their final opponents, as any slip up during the run-in will allow one of the four other nations still alive for either the automatic qualifying place or the playoff berth that will go to the group runner-up to knock the Rosso e Oro out of consideration.

It is imperative that Captina avenge both of their losses thus far in the tournament, to Putrasia and Montagne Noire, with both nations visiting Geneva City, while the trip to Krytenia will mark the end of the away portion of the schedule; all three are the remaining eligible sides, along with Eshialand and Captina for the two places and there remains a couple of head to head matches among the chasing pack.

The immediate concern will be Putrasia, who will make their first ever trip to TCC Sports Ground, where Captina have won all 6 fixtures so far, outscoring the opposition 17-5; they will host Krytenia on matchday 16 while the Rosso have a bye, so their fate could be decided unless they can take all 6 points during this international window.

“How you feeling?”

“About what?”

“The obvious! Paradystopia, the big game.”

“Ah yeah, that little thing. All the weight of qualification comes down to one match…”

“Yeah……so how are you feeling, Cesc?”

The youngest member of the Cardenaoan national team turned away from his friend Clarrisa, taking a moment to answer. He was fresh off scoring his first goal for La Furia Azule, a 77th minute winner against Geektopia in their most recent fixture. It wasn’t the beautiful long-range snipe he had hoped for, instead it was a scruffed shot off a botched clearance, but a goal is a goal is a goal…doubly so when it secures three much needed points.

“Honestly Clari, I don’t really know. I mean…definitely feeling the pressure, feeling nervous, but…I dunno, I’m feeling pretty chill at the same time so it’s weird.”

“Hah, only you could ‘be chill’ when things are like this! Wait, why’s it weird?” She said, cutting off her laugh that sounded like bells.

“Well, it’s not like I’m a starter or anything, it’s really on Camilo, Ricky, and Kiko to get us the win. I’m just here to keep them sharp in training, help out how I can.”

“Oh Cesc…you’re always so hard, I swear you’re your harshest critic. You help out so much, you literally won the game for us against the Geeks, how much more can a player do?”

“I know, I know…you’re right. Like always!” He smiled as Clari’s fingers gently brushed against his back.

“I’m glad you know it,” she said with a playful smile.

For Cardenao’s starboy, the pressure was starting to mount as each game saw Francesc Fabregessi look that much more like the real deal. As things stood now, he was level headed and seemingly handling things well…but Cardenaoans remember all too well the story of Chimo Ventura, the boy wonder whose career got off to redhot start until stress led to addiction and disappearing from the game before turning 30. Still though, the prevailing sense was that such a future was highly unlikely to befall young Cesc…but only time will tell.

Information is currency.

Knowledge is power.

These and other pledges were true in all realms, but infinitely more so in the world Missy LeCrown inhabited. As the media queen of Cardenao, she was expected to know everything before anything happened. So when she was asked, live on air, about her reaction to Robel Ezera’s abrupt though not unforeseen resignation, she was uncharacteristically at a loss for words, though she recovered well enough by laying into the now very much disgraced Banijan. It was an embarrassment for her though, one that she couldn’t afford a repeat of, lest her reputation take a hit. And so, it was in a deserved fume that she fired off a pointed message to her favorite Banijan after walking off the set.

“What the hell Kato? Can’t give your girl a heads up?”

Of course, she knew that Kato didn’t know, couldn’t have possibly known. Just because he was a Royal, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner, owner of the Capo Capatori…man she loved thinking about her fianceé. But of course, just because he was all those things and so much more, didn’t mean he knew the inner workings of the equally ambitious Banijan delegation to the World Cup Committee. Still though, she was allowed to be upset and wish he could’ve told her any whispers he might be hearing. The quick ding of an incoming message quickly placated Missy, Kato knew just how to get his lady to feel better.

“You know I would’ve if I knew babe. Got something big, not good news though. Ebola outbreak in Abahamba, don’t know much more–keep this quiet for now. Will talk later, gtg. Love you.”

Well that wasn’t what she expected at all. In a bit of a daze, she texted back that she loved him and tried to make sense of this information.

WORLD CUP 100 QUALIFIERS
Can the Agilang Dilaw channel the spirit of World Cup 68 Qualifying?
Perfect record in second half of qualifying puts national team atop of group

Image
OOC TL Note: "Gentlemen, good news, it's happening!"

NUEVO SAN MARCO - After a dismal start of their qualifying campaign, the national football team of Sangti and the Filindo Isles, known locally as the Agilang Dilaw, have picked up the pace in preparation for the homestretch.

Going unbeaten in 4 matches and winning 3 of them, Vicenzo Frain's squad has put themselves in a position to have a chance of snatching second place from Choppyhausen by the end of the qualifying campaign, which could put the Agilang Dilaw to a qualifying playoff spot. Fun fact, in the three World Cup finals the Ancient Sangti squad had appeared in, they have never qualified automatically, going through the playoffs in each occasion. Yes, that includes their World Cup 68 qualification where they topped Qualifying Group 18. Let's go back for a while in memory lane to relieve that moment.

At the first half of the qualifying campaign, the nation, then known as The Royal Barangay, were grouped with the precursor to Mertagne and to Euran Oceania Territories, The Inevitable Syndicate, and Astograth. They were also the third seeded team in that group that included Carialus, Star United States, New South Aqmuland, Aritian, and New Mumford. After the first half of qualifying, the Agilang Dilaw found themselves at 4th place, losing expectedly against The Inevitable Syndicate and against Astograth, but were held to a draw against Aritian and against Carialus, putting them 5 points behind the leaders at the halfway point of the campaign.

Group 18 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Astograth 7 5 1 1 19 8 +11 16
2 The Inevitable Syndicate 7 5 1 1 14 3 +11 16
3 Star United States 7 3 3 1 18 15 +3 12
4 The Royal Barangay 7 3 2 2 18 16 +2 11
5 Carialus 7 3 1 3 16 12 +4 10
6 New South Aqmuland 7 3 1 3 14 14 0 10
7 New Mumford 7 1 0 6 8 22 −14 3
8 Arititan 7 0 1 6 6 23 −17 1

What the team performed in the second half is astonishing. When they won against New South Aqmuland and Aritian, they were still five points behind leading team, Astograth, who beat the top seeded Syndicatians, which had already dropped points in their first match in the second half. The Esportivans had a tough visit to the Atlantian Oceania but were 4-1 victors to finally overtake the top seeded team. Hosting Astograth the very next matchday, the fans went wild when the Barangayans cut that deficit to two after a 3-1 win. The Agilang Dilaw won their remaining matches, and with Astograth losing 2-3 to Carialus the next matchday, The Royal Barangay took the lead in Group 18, one which they never relinquished until the end of that qualifying campaign.

Group 18 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 The Royal Barangay 14 10 2 2 46 27 +19 32
2 Astograth 14 9 2 3 29 17 +12 29
3 The Inevitable Syndicate 14 8 2 4 24 12 +12 26
4 Carialus 14 8 2 4 36 26 +10 26
5 Star United States 14 5 6 3 38 33 +5 21
6 New South Aqmuland 14 3 4 7 25 30 −5 13
7 New Mumford 14 3 0 11 20 44 −24 9
8 Arititan 14 0 2 12 15 44 −29 2

That edition however did not entitle the group winners to qualify automatically to the World Cup Finals, instead, they had to face fellow group winners Valanora to seal a place there, but they have to wait for a second chance after failing to win in the two legged encounter, drawing at home and losing the away match. They were drawn against fellow Esportivans Estope who defeated Nexxus Drako in their first round encounter. Like the first round, the Agilang Dilaw drew 2-2 but this time in their visit south of the nation. The Royal Barangay finally qualified to the World Cup Finals after a 4-2 win at home in the second leg.

Now, back to present, the team didn't fully channel that spirit, as they already dropped two points of possible 24 points for a perfect record, but that points drop was against the top seeded team in the group, TJUN-ia, who themselves are having a terrible qualifying campaign. The ensuing narrow win at Behh on TJUN-ia's bye matchday finally put SFI to third place in Qualifying Group 20. The remaining matches in the group though, will determine the Esportivans' fate if they will able to have a chance to qualify in the landmark World Cup.

Six points behind Baptism of Fire runners-up Choppyhausen, a win at the visit to their nation would halve that deficit, and with them facing TJUN-ia the very next matchday, we could see the Agilang Dilaw in second place... if we continue channeling the WC68Q spirit and manage to dispatch an unranked Lignuntia. SFI still has Valentine Z to face, but with the team currently in second place having a bye in the final matchday, the team clad in golden yellow and black could put themselves in a position to qualify for the playoffs this time.

We hope that the spirit of Rick Martinez could be channeled by Vicenzo Frain and his squad this time.

Asiat alkoivat tuntua yhä todellisemmilta. With no more byes on the docket and a two-point lead, the next six games will ultimately decide the fate of Kimi-Suomi and their Huuhkajat - and whether or not they can make the Satavuotisjuhlatanssi. Even though they had only one defeat to their name in a near-flawless campaign, these final six games would decide everything - whether they make it, whether they will have to go to a Pudotuspeli just to try and make it, or whether this was nothing more than a false rise and that a collapse of epic proportions was just on the horizon. No one knew if this final stretch was going to cement the Huuhkajat amongst the pantheon of those to make the Dance, or see the clock strike midnight on us all, but everyone was ready for anything. Esko Laaksonen didn't want to start thinking about that until more games had been played, which makes sense considering the history of Suomen sport on the international stage. But the dream was there, within reach, and many were starting to believe...but was this all smoke and mirrors?

Bhumi Matawisin Imperiumi away was meant to be the first proper test of this final stretch, the Tanjung Kalapa Stadium in Labuanjaya packed and looking to cause a shock to help keep the White Tiger Team in the hunt for Top 2 at the very least. With a target on our back and many praying for our downfall, old Kimi-Suomi would've just submitted to their wishes...taken the L and started crumbling down. However, as this campaign has shown in spades, this is not the Huuhkajat of old. This team feels different, even if the personnel aren't too different from last cycle, and so here, in a spot where we normally would falter and stumble, the Huuhkajat proved they were not normal. Sure, things were tough at times, but we pulled through, and goals from Jason Jenner-Pokka and Enni Pajari got the job done. One down. One more down.

Then it was time for a special occasion - the final home game at the Galaktien Colosseum in Lumikukkulat for this campaign, with Suur-Portugaliza as the honoured guests in this scenario. With Aleirave only managing a 0-0 in Etelä-Kerala and their big contest vs Sarzoninen on this very night, we knew we had the chance to give ourselves a little bit of wiggle room towards the top of this group, and with the maths starting to click in our favour, we pulled out another brilliant performance on home soil. No, this wasn't anything like the 11-2 we pulled earlier in the campaign, but what we did do here was a measured performance where we did what we needed to do with no complications at all. It could've been more like 4-0 or 5-0 in this game if it weren't for some brilliant goalkeeping by the visitors, but another 2-0 is just as good - with Remu Jantunen grabbing both goals. Ever since we lost 3-0 in Aleirave, we have now won 4 games in a row by a combined scoreline of 11-0. Does this feel different yet?

With the Seagulls winning that clash 4-2, the group is becoming more and more real in the eyes of the average Huuhkajat fan. Top of the group by 4 points, with a game in hand, and ahead of the Stars by 11, things are starting to feel very real very quickly. How real? Well, let's put it like this: if we beat Sel Appa away, while the Seagulls are on their bye, then we would play Etelä-Kerala at Pesä knowing a win would clinch us a ticket to the Satavuotisjuhlatanssi. That is how close we are to making it, to breaking the glass ceiling for ourselves...but we still have a job to do. Sel Appa will be looking for revenge after we committed Scorigami against them, and while we have beaten Etelä-Kerala before, the pressure that will be placed on us in both of these games will be enormous...and who knows, maybe this goes to that final window and the chaos that may cause.

Kaksi voittoa lisää riittäisi. Onko meillä kyky saavuttaa ne?

Postby Qusmo » Sun Nov 09, 2025 5:23 pm

Four nations from West Pavola have been awarded the rights to host the World Cup, but only three receive automatic qualification. The host nation farthest to the southwest — an island nation in the Xandrian Sea — is the one which will host the least matches, in the least stadia, in the least cities, so it is chosen as the nation which will have to go through Qualification to participate in its very own home World Cup. Disaster sets in early, however, as they lose both their first two fixtures — and just as they seem to be getting things back on track, they lose again on matchday five in a big match against a top rival for qualification.

Yes, of course, it’s Qusmo. But once, not long ago, it was Yuezhou, too. The Dragons entered World Cup 98 Qualifying as the team ranked eighth in the Multiverse, with no other team in the top thirty-two represented in their group. They were expected to qualify at a canter. Things didn’t actually go so easily, however. It seemed as though the pressure had gotten to the team, and there were real fears that they would be forced into the playoffs or be eliminated entirely. They remained outside both the playoff and auto-qualification spots for the entirety of the first half of Qualifiers. After collecting that third loss on matchday five, however, the team never lost again during Qualifiers. They won their group. They qualified for their home World Cup automatically.

Of course, the situation is different for Qusmo now. They’re not the eighth-ranked team in the Multiverse — that’s Ko-oren, which is a direct rival for qualification. At fifty-eighth in the KPB+ rankings, and having missed both the World Cup and the Cup of Harmony for the first time in the team’s history the cycle prior, Qusmo is not the favorite in its own group. Yuezhou entered World Cup 98 Qualifying on a five-tournament qualification streak, which included a trip all the way to the quarterfinals, whereas Qusmo hasn’t successfully qualified for any World Cup on sporting merit since the Reforms. Since that time, Qusmo has only participated in World Cup 98 by virtue of being one of that tournament’s three auto-qualified co-hosts, and it crashed out of that tournament with a single point in the group stage. And whereas World Cup 98 Qualifying groups awarded two auto-qualification places and one playoff spot, World Cup 100 Qualifying groups are a gauntlet with just one auto-qualification spot paired with one playoff spot.

Still, Qusmo has a shot to turn the history books back two cycles. It clearly struggled to start, with three losses — an unacceptable home loss to a Baptism of Fire debutant, an agonizing six-pointer against the team expected to be Qusmo’s toughest competition for the playoffs, and a record-worst five-nil loss to group leaders Ko-oren. The weight of an entire nation’s expectation — and the pressure to not become enshrined forever as the first World Cup host nation ever to fail to qualify for the actual tournament — clearly dragged the team down. But the team hasn’t lost since. For a single matchday, before a draw with Carpathia and Ruthenia, they even led the entire group. Even after the result which snapped a seven-match winning streak, the Caldera Sun are still leading the playoff race by two points with a match in hand, and the team trails Ko-oren for automatic qualification by just a single point.

The schedule, seemingly, is opening up for Qusmo. The team will face the four nations it beat to open its current eight-match unbeaten run, three of which are debutants for this cycle from outside the top two hundred fifty spots of the rankings table. A home match against a team ranked two hundred fifty-first on matchday sixteen. A home match against a team ranked three hundred thirty-sixth on matchday eighteen. Qusmo won the reverse fixtures two-nil and four-nil, respectively, on the road. Qusmo has an away fixture on matchday fifteen against an unranked opponent that they defeated eight-two in Qanz. Eight points would be enough to guarantee a playoff spot, no matter what either Carpathia and Ruthenia or Oscioru are able to accomplish. There certainly is no guarantee, but if you needed three wins, these sorts of matches are pretty good places to look. These are fixtures a World Cup team should be successful in.

Then, of course, there is Oscioru itself. The Caldera Sun will journey to Poma to play the Osci on matchday seventeen. Qusmo beat Oscioru two-one in the reverse fixture, but Oscioru will have home advantage, and the magic the team and their fans manage to conjure up at their home stadium even managed to result in a three-goal win over Ko-oren earlier this campaign. A win against Oscioru, or even a draw, would go a massive way towards clinching a playoff spot, but it certainly won’t be easy.

Still, Qusmo defeated every single one of its final four opponents in the first half of Qualifying. Every other team in the group had at least one loss between matchdays six and nine. Ko-oren lost to Oscioru, and they’ll play again on matchday sixteen. Carpathia and Ruthenia lost to Coercia, and they’ll play again on matchday eighteen. Oscioru lost to Canamn, and they’ll play again on matchday fifteen, to mention nothing of their matchday seventeen rematch with Qusmo.

Nothing is certain. But it’s so close. Qusmo has recorded its largest win in the team’s history, before the Reforms or since, and finished another match just one goal away from tying the record. Overall, over the past eight matches: thirty-one goals scored, eight conceded, seven wins, one draw, zero losses, twenty-two points. Qusmo needs eight more points over their final four fixtures to clinch a spot in the playoffs at a minimum. If Ko-oren drops so much as one more point, Qusmo could even challenge for automatic qualification.

This cycle looked lost. The Caldera Sun seemed to be about to meet a historic tournament with an historic embarrassment. But maybe they can do it. Maybe they can defy the odds. Maybe they can do what Yuezhou accomplished not so long ago. When the World Cup returns to Qusmo, maybe the crowds in Atlem and Qanz will get to cheer on their own heroes again.

I can't!
I can't survive!
I try to find the way,
But faith will be my guide.
There's nothing left

BLOCK OUT!
Stuck in my life.
WHY CAN'T
I rise up through this maze?
BREAK OUT!
There's no way back,
You know it feels like ash

When the daylight's in my eyes,
It wakes me and I feel alive!
Fade into the frozen air,
Just to stay alive!

Face myself again,
Drift away to free my soul
Find the way, 'cause faith looks in,
On my side he rode...

Kunio’s words hiss along in the chilly air of the locker room.

“It’s cold, right lads?”

Sung sits in the tunnel. Within his hands and on his back is the hope of a nation, and now a region with Lignuntia and Colmaijo’s elimination.

“This is nothing! Here on planet Earth the cold isn’t from some void.”

The traveling fans mill into their seats, looking about expectantly through their jackets and coats.

He pounds his chest, once, twice.

“That warmth is RIGHT HERE. You’ve all played in conditions like this - it’s no different here.”

Undershirts, neckwarmers, gloves, all come on. Resplendent in away red.

“You get out there, and you fight! Fight as one, fight as brothers! They will not have this.”

Lining up in the tunnel, their blue opponents opposite.

“KAYO STEWARTIKA!”

From a neutral broadcaster:

Here we are on what is surely the biggest match of Group 8 - Kelssek take on Stewartika at Bowreach, home side in blue, visitors in red. A win here for Stewartika could take them clear enough at the top of the table to ensure at least a playoff spot, but the Voyagers will not be keen to allow that to happen. Nothing is for certain here as the Qualifiers begin to wrap up. Whoever walks away from this match the victor will surely go to West Pavlova in the end. And here is the lineup:

BP closing fast, six pointer against Ethane to decide auto berth?
Scott McCrae
The Mail on Sunday Chief Soccer Writer

The Commonwealth of Baker Park National Team will travel to Ethane for the first time since the World Cup 87 Finals on matchday 15 with the potential lead in Group 16 on the line.

The Bees sit 6 points behind but have a match in hand remaining which they will gain with the following fixture as Ethane will have their second half bye while Orcuo visits the BBP National Stadium. A draw in Deloitte will probably be enough for the hosts to get close to clinching automatic qualification, and would leave Park with plenty of work left in the final three matches

BP are the highest scoring side of the nine nations in their section and also have the largest goal difference, but have no margin for error with four teams left fighting for the top two spots as Saterun are also making a closing run and Riandera still clinging onto life despite dropping both of their last two matches.

WC100Q MD14: Eastfield Lodge 5–0 Boring Paradise
Line-up (4-2-3-1): O’Sullivan - Webber, Vohra, Fevison (<> Delaware-Mahmud 65’), Phelan - Dinwoodie, Farrow (<> Forde 45’) - Caceres (<> Aguiar 45’), Jafari-Law, Lysander (<> Scripps 65’) - Noble (<> Holdsworth 45’)
Goals (Assists): Noble (11’ - Jafari-Law), Jafari-Law (21’ - Dinwoodie), Dinwoodie (49’ - Holdsworth), Holdsworth (67’ [p]), Scripps (82’ - Holdsworth)
Headline: Boring Paradise return to their former masters, and are sent home in shreds

The deciding moments of the mammoth World Cup 100 qualifying campaign approach, looming on the horizon in the form of Auprussia and Biyambi. But first, the Imperial Commonwealth needed to be in the best position possible to take advantage of those matches, with more minnows lining up in the form of Khachen and the former imperial colony of Boring Paradise. First up, the Lodgers travelled to Khachen, with a couple of enforced changes due to yellow card accumulation giving Florian Mordecai and Fidelina Noble a shot back into the line-up for the big matches. As with all of the recent fixtures against the minnows, this was yet another display of dominance typical of Meogegiv’s reign thus far - Noble managed to test the Khachen keeper twice in the first ten minutes before Boet Caceres opened the scoring, the RGS midfielder converting a low corner cross from the edge of the box. Caceres doubled the lead with the visitors’ next shot on target, a simple slide rule pass from Noble on the counter attack setting him up to finish past the Khachen keeper.

Khachen did try to tighten up after that second goal, and it lasted all of 30 minutes as Paisley Lysander continued her rich scoring vein by scoring a carbon copy of Caceres goal in the first half, right down to the placement of Noble’s pass and her finish past the Khachen keeper. And only a couple of minutes later, Noble herself found a way to get onto the scoresheet, dispossessing the full back and running right through the rest of the defence with ease before chipping the Khachen keeper. She was eventually replaced for a rest by Enoch Ingersleben, and youngster also managed to get himself amongst the goals late on, Lysander setting up the Tihon United striker with a brilliant deft flick around the centre-back. The only blemish on the match was the loss of a clean sheet shortly before half-time, a miskick from O’Sullivan being sliced right into the path of the open Khachen striker, who managed to find enough time to fire back past the RGS keeper.

Later that week, Parliament Stadium saw the return of Boring Paradise to the Imperial Commonwealth, and yet again, Meogegiv’s side ran riot against the inexperienced minnows, a generally unchanged side quickly hitting the gas despite the Paradisians’ defensive setup with Noble heading in Jafari-Law’s cross completely unmarked just 11 minutes into the match. The provider turned goalscorer ten minutes later, cutting inside the full back to receive Dinwoodie’s through ball and curl it first time into the far top corner. The visitors didn’t provide a single shot on target until the fortieth minute, the Paradisian striker actually forcing a full stretch save from O’Sullivan. Eastfield Lodge were in such control that Meogegiv opted to make a bunch of changes at half-time, and that did little to disrupt the hosts’ dominance of the match, with one of the subs providing immediate benefit as Dinwoodie snatched the ball from Holdsworth’s feet with a snap shot into the bottom corner of the net. Holdsworth would convert a penalty straight down the middle shortly after the hour mark, the Paradisian goalie guilty of bringing him down 1 on 1 inside the box. He then turned provider for the fifth goal of the match, flicking a loose ball over his own shoulder to the back post where Rafeeda Scripps was completely unmarked to head in the fifth.

Calla slowly woke up, dizzy as he used to be on those post-rave afternoons back when he was young. He remembered that he was walking around on the forest with Mireia, but not much more after that, like everything blurred around him. The first thing that he noticed, though, is that he was trapped. Good thing is, he was trapped with Mireia, while the bad is that it looked like they were in an underground facility.

At least it was not that bad of a cell, though. He woke up in a proper bed, the room wasn't as cold as one could expect underground, and at least it was well ventilated. To be fair, it was probably the best condition one could be locked in with. The cell itself occupied about 1/4 of a seemingly rectangular cellar. In front of it, a passage that gave way to the cell's door. In the other half of the room there was a ladder that gave way to a trapdoor that was on the ceiling. The rest was dominated by what seemed a guarding zone with a table, a couple of chairs and even, surprisingly a small fridge. Who the fuck needed a fridge in a dungeon? His hunger came knocking at that moment.

As his mind got clearer after waking up, though, he started to realize the gravity of his situation, and questions began to flood his mind. Where in the goddamn world were they? He didn't remeber being transported here, really. Who did bring them here, and why? How did this person know how to find them in that remote part of the forest? How were they in there in the first place? Was that a premeditated kidnapping? Did anything of this had to do with their investigation at all? Were they actually close to a finding? Why was he wearing those weird pajamas? He understood that the one who kidnapped them needed to take their possessions away, specially their phones; otherwise that would be one pretty bad kidnapper. But did he really need to change his clothes? Was it necessary? Did that mean that, at a point, that kidnapper saw them as one would see a Jeruselemite?

He tried to stop thinking for a moment, with mild success, and he sat on the edge of his bed, looking at the void; it looked as blurry as anything else he was seeing without his glasses. And like that he stayed for a good time, just trying to disconnect himself. He checked his pockets in hopes to find his phone, but alas, these pajamas didn't even have pockets. He thought of his Nasi back in Kynetbo. That last morning he remembered, he decided he would call later... Time constraints, one would suppose. He was on a hurry, and he could always call later, or so he thought. How many hours, or days, had he been asleep. He would probably be worried already, and with a reason clearly. He couldn't fathom how bad he would be hurting right now. If, God wants it not he was to be trapped there for the rest of his days, how would his Ignasi manage? That mortgage was still unpaid, dammit. Leaving was not that bright of an idea, at least El Ressopó paid their bills...

Calla decided to let Mireia wake up when she felt like it. It's not like being awake was really an advantage, anyways. Though, it was hard not doing so in the condition he found himself in. In that surprisingly hygienic cell, minutes felt like hours to him. Around who knows how many of them, Mireia finally woke up, at first as confused as he was. Calla guessed that she was going through the same process he experienced barely some minutes ago, of asking all the questions he wondered himself; so he left her for a bit. Although, and must be said; to some of the questions Calla made to himself, she already knew, in fact, the answer. She could remember him appearing from the bushes. That time, she saw him for who he really was.

They talked for a bit, but not much. Calla was told of the traitor, they talked a bit of what they regretted of not doing before getting trapped here, and exchanged their thoughts on their situation and for their immediate future. They were left for what felt like hours sitting in those cells, with nothing but each other. However, they wouldn't be alone for much, as the so-called forest ranger opened the trapdoor and went down to the ceiling to meet them. As soon as he got down, he opened the fridge, grabbed a tube of beer, and proceeded to take a chair and sit right in front of the cell.

(Bertram):- Good morning, little angels!
(Mireia):- Of course you went for the beer huh? Fucking alcoholic.
(Bertram):- It's not your wine, but it suffices... Well, I'm sure you have a lot of questions.
(Mireia):- No shit! You fucking traitor.
(Bertram):- I'm sorry, Mireia, really, but I got my hands tied here.
(Calla):- Why?
(Bertram):- Well it's a long story, and I don't want to bother you with the details.
(Calla):- Do we look like we got something better to do?
(Bertram):- Well, first of all, I must say that the Tabalot is actually real. So you were right all along, Mireia! Isn't that wonderful?
(Mireia):- Cut it, malparit!
(Bertram):- Alright chill it girl. I think I'll just sit down... Here, alright. Well, I must say I'm not actually a forest ranger, but rather I am a government agent, and I work for the security department.
(Mireia):- Ooof course you are! And you couldn't tell me any time during the last 10 years for which I've been coming relentlessy, couldn't you?
(Bertram):- Listen. The Tabalot hadn't been real, but rather it was created, a modification from other species made to be bigger, faster, stronger and with a raw desire to kill. When it was completed, it was meant to be the best Bonusian weapon, a beast so lethal all the state's enemies would crumble upon it's might... but things turned for the worse... In a moment of weakness, it came through, and it escaped.
(Calla):- So he's real, and he's out there then?
(Bertram):- Indeed. And for now, the forest keeps him there, but also he keeps us away from him... That's when you come in!
(Mireia):- And why should we help you after all this, scummy traitor.
(Bertram):- It's really simple, my dear Mire. You have two choices here. One choice is, you both help us by giving us all the important info regarding the Tabalot. We finally find it, we deal with it and then we'll get you both out and you'll be able to go to your average lives again, ignoring what happened here.
(Mireia):- What's the other option then?
(Bertram):- Simple. We kill you. We have things covered. You got lost in the woods, and sadly didn't make it back. You get your funerals and that's it. Now you Mireia, i know you're quite the lone wolf, but our friend here, you got a husband in Kynetbo, don't you?
(Calla):-...
(Bertram):- So why don't you choose the first option and avoid yourself the hussle? It's the best option, in my opinion. So, look at these reports of ours, and tell me what you see.
(Calla):- Wait! I can't see without my glasses, you need to give them back!
(Bertram):- Damn, okay! Here. Now do your brainy stuff. Think stuff, and tell me.

Mireia and Calla looked at those papers. Not thoroughly, that's for sure, as it was not really anything they knew already. Suddenly, a call onto Bertram's walkie saved them, while dooming the rest of the city.

"Sir, there's been reports from several citizens, the Tabalot is heading to Minga"

(Bertram):- Damn! Gotta go, don't move! Heheheh, not like you could anyways.

Bertram went up those stairs as fast as his once agile Llimanian body allowed him to after his daily wine, beer and sedentarism-based treatment, and he head off. Where? Who knows. But as soon as he was gone, Calla smiled.
(Mireia):- What's so funny, do you not see in which situation we're in? Who knows how much we'll be here, and if the Tabalot gets to Minga... God I don't even want to think about it!
(Calla):- Look.
Calla took his glasses, and he introduced one of the arms into the keylock. After playing with it a little, the door opened effortlessly.
(Mireia):- How did...?
(Calla):- Let's go, to Minga!

Poc a poc arriba el moment
on tot se sabrà finalment.
El monstre a Minga s'acostà
i a tothom disgustà.
Creuà la ciutat com un llamp
I directe se'n va anar al camp.

Little by little the moment arrives

Battlement

Battlement's one of the few boroughs of Columbus whose entire history revolves around conflict. Sure, Prairie was founded on the concept of breaking away from Columbus, Brigantine was founded on the concept of fighting said breakaways, and Cantilever was a grossly mismanaged government project, but all of them eventually stabilized. You can imagine a borough named after a castle's defense mechanism isn't exactly the same.

Ironically, Battlement's story begins with the Dhemixian College of Law. The government, wanting to assert yet more excessive force against Prairie for being a problem, put the university just outside the boundary of where Prairie ended and unincorporated territory began. While it seems (and very much so is) confoundingly stupid, the government's reasons for this were twofold. One, it was apparently a "power move" in their eyes, and two, it would supposedly attract more government loyalists to the other side of Prairie to effectively encircle it. As you can imagine with any action of the early Dhemixian government, it was neither of these things.

A town did begin to sprout up around where the university was, but it was anything but a puppet of the government. The Dhemixian government expected most of DCL's students to be crossing the river from very loyal boroughs like Dhemix and Riverside, but most of them instead came from Prairie just next door. With them came their negative view of how the nation was running, and you can imagine training lawyers in the laws of a government they don't exactly like will lead to them using that knowledge against the government.

This went on the whole time Kelly was running a clown show over in Prairie, but when they eventually incorporated into Columbus, everyone assumed the jig was up and DCL would follow suit.

For the lawyers, the jig was, in fact, not up.

They were really the only holdouts, and their doing so revolved around a legal loophole that they pretty much found on day one.

The location-based tax reforms that led to most of the other boroughs incorporating stated that "any settlement outside the city limits of Columbus would be subject to increased taxation measures,". Remember here, the Dhemixian College of Law isn't technically a part of a borough yet. It didn't have enough population in the town surrounding the college to call itself one, but the government argued that town was still subject because it was a settlement. The DCL expected this coming, so they pulled out the legal equivalent of the nuclear option:

The college technically isn't a settlement. Private universities were specifically defined as a settlement for the purposes of the reforms, but all federal land wasn't addressed under that because it was assumed to be a part of Columbus already. In doing so, the government seemingly forgot that the DCL was, in fact, federal land because it was a government-appointed university, which meant that anything on the college's property was exempt from the reform.

You may still be thinking, "isn't there a town anyways off campus there?". There is most certainly one, but the university had a solution for that problem too. The DCL knew that shortly after it was put in place, the government would quickly retract it after everyone incorporated essentially as a form of bureaucratic "no takesies backsies". With that information, the DCL figured that getting the town to somehow temporarily lease its land to the university and then get it back after would get them through without becoming a part of the city. The townsfolk were happy to oblige, and for the ten days that the taxes were in place, the Dhemixian College of Law technically owned the entire town as federal land.

That quaint, college town eventually grew into a larger city of its own, and the people of Battlement became the new antithesis to the government.

They didn't have the means to become independent from Dhemixia, but they were about as free as one can be whilst still being a part of it. The city was rivalling Columbus itself in how big it ended up getting, and that scared the government a lot. Once Battlement caught wind of a possible military occupation as a show of force, they began taking precautionary measures.

By precautionary measures, I mean siege defenses.

They ended up digging ditches, flooding moats, and even constructing battlements around the city in preparation for the assumed "invasion" by the government.

They ended up not being remotely effective in keeping the Dhemixian army out, and that cost them their dignity in the long run. Most fled the city to Prairie or Brigantine when they saw the military actually arriving, but the unfortunate few who stayed would be essentially forced into submission. In yet more excessive force from the Dhemixian government, they made sure something like this would never happen again by placing the central HQ of the army directly in the city center. On top of that both literally and figuratively, they built a fort, named it after the borough in which the government presided, built an airstrip for good measure, and ended up having enough of the military budget left over to utterly assert dominance over the townspeople of Battlement.

How did they do that, you may ask? They built a Battlement on the outside border of the borough, both to send the message of "your defenses mean nothing to me" and "you're a part of Dhemixia whether you like it or not".

Most didn't know the government was even competent enough to do something like this, and the majority don't dare to test that theory a second time. As one can probably imagine, the regular civilians of Battlement still resent the government for, you know, building a military base over their homes, and it's hard to blame them.
It's empty.

EWEN CASTAGNARY, CALCHEDON MAYOR
"Calchedon is a city of smoke stacks."

We see a series of factories and pipes with smoke and steam rising into the sky.

EWEN CASTAGNARY, CALCHEDON MAYOR (V.O.)
"It's an industrial city. But right in the middle of Laureled City's oldest neighborhoods, a little miracle survived."

A view from the sky goes from small houses squeezed together to a small grove of pine trees, then suddenly a horse racing track.

On the ground, we see a large horse trailer backing down a tight street. A man in a purple shirt presses against a wall, slowly waving his hands so the driver can see him in his side mirror.

DR. LAOUIC LE VISAGE, RACING HISTORIAN (V.O.)
"There are horse races all across the Dominion from February to November. A stable can be quite successful racing and winning at places like Copalme Park, Chievrefeuil, and Aiguillat Beach throughout the year. These are fine tracks."

TREVEUR VAOLIANIER, JOURNALIST (V.O.)
"For Kan Roue, winning those isn't the point. If you're not winning Major Ten races, it's a crisis."

ÉTIENNE CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE CEO
"I think it's incorrect to call the Major Ten a disappointment for Kan Roue thus far."

KONAN CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE DIRECTOR
"We don't enter races just to grace everyone with our presence. The goal is to win."

Kan Roue handlers walk a brown stallion through a tight, winding corridor.

LISTIEN BOURSEL, PLAGE DE MOUSSE FARM OWNER
"The Calchedon Stakes presents two challenges. The first one, the obvious one, is the course itself."

Historic footage follows a herd of horses racing through a turn, then the camera swings to reveal stacked stands full of people.

DR. LAOUIC LE VISAGE, RACING HISTORIAN
"Rue des Pins is a glimpse of an older, scrappier style of horse racing. When you would race wherever you could, just to see whose horse went faster."

JEAN-DENIS DE RÉAUMUR, TRANSFER MARKET REPORTER
"Kervenez was named after a grand estate. Rue des Pins was just a cobblestone street within Calchedon's city limits where carthorses ran errands."

DR. LAOUIC LE VISAGE, RACING HISTORIAN
"Youths raced their horses off the cobblestone street into a clearing around a pond. That street is now the chute. The pond still exists; you can see the glint of the sun when they go through the last turn. What once was a little neighborhood with houses and shops became a racetrack wound tight within its walls."

PIUS COIPEL, JOCKEY
"Long straight. Right-hand turn. Curved straight. Right again. Short straight. Another turn. Then back onto the Rue des Pins."

LISTIEN BOURSEL, PLAGE DE MOUSSE FARM OWNER
"The second is the distance. Three thousand two hundred meters. Two full laps. It's a reminder to stables and trainers that heart only gets a horse so far."

PIUS COIPEL, JOCKEY
"It's a small track that feels smaller than it already is."

Calchedon Stakes Post Draw

10 Bitter Scarlet (Kan Roue)
11 Sactantes (Courant Marin)
12 Blello Fwend (Gildas)

CATERINA CINELU, BLOODLINE ANALYST
"For a marathon like the Calchedon Stakes, Bitter Scarlet is the best card in Kan Roue's hand."

The bell rings and the gates open. The horses fire out from between two imposing stands and enter onto the track's front stretch.

CATERINA CINELU, BLOODLINE ANALYST (V.O.)
"Over the last three years, Bitter Scarlet has been as successful as anyone in longer races. And his sire Bitter Truth was a Calchedon Stakes winner."

A camera at the end of the front stretch sees 11 horses in a group, while Blello Fwend had a poor start and is not catching up.

ÉTIENNE CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE CEO
"Bitter Scarlet is evidence of Kan Roue's impressive depth. He's been successful at every track he's raced at."

LISTIEN BOURSEL, PLAGE DE MOUSSE FARM OWNER (V.O.)
"But he's never run two laps at Rue des Pins. One long flowing lap at Renoncule in Tristolis is nothing like the start-stop rhythm in Calchedon."

The horses arrive at the first turn. Half of the horses, along with Bitter Scarlet, make a broader turn on the run that puts them far to the outside on the second straight. The other half make slower, tighter turns and end on the rail.

TRISTANIG LE VERGER, KAN ROUE TRAINER (V.O.)
"You can make a long race even longer by keeping the same pace. But can you accelerate fast enough to make up for the slow turn?"

GEOFFROY LOZEC, RETIRED JOCKEY (V.O.)
"Every turn, you need to decide the next turn. And hope that the other horses don't decide for you."

At the second turn, Bitter Scarlet makes a tight turn to get on the rail for the next straight. He cuts off Sactantes, and Gulian Goddat is almost pitched off.

On the rail, Konan Cahufe-l'Eaue laughs, grabbing Étienne's arm and pointing.

A social media video by Renardiere shows Lumièrelectrique blow by on the third straight to cheers.

LISTIEN BOURSEL, PLAGE DE MOUSSE FARM OWNER (V.O.)
"It's the crowds. Does your horse understand that they have to enter and exit that maelstrom of noise and have it not affect them?"

At the point, Mercury Lamp slows as it enters the fourth stretch and turns into the Rue des Pins. Arthur Aladent has to apply the whip hard to get him back to speed.

DR. LAOUIC LE VISAGE, RACING HISTORIAN
"The second lap at Rue des Pins is a relatively recent innovation. The Calchedon Stakes was at one point in history a minute-and-half dash. An incredibly short race. But then 38 years ago they added a second loop."

At the front, Lazaretto is easily passed by Chronologie Regent, and seems uninterested in regaining the spot.

The pack is spread enough that Bitter Scarlet in fourth can make a tight, clean rotation into the first turn. He gallops toward the second turn along the row of pine trees.

PIUS COIPEL, JOCKEY
"Even against the pines you can hear the crowd. They get louder on the second lap."

Chronologie Regent is passed by Rallygoer, then Lumièrelectrique into the second turn. Sure Dance followed by Bitter Scarlet close in on the leaders.

KONAN CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE DIRECTOR
"Here he goes! He's going for it!"

Konan points as Bitter Scarlet passes Sure Dance in the third turn and passes a slowing Lumièrelectrique in the straight. Unfortunately, Rallygoer is uncatchable.

We see Konan Cahufe-l'Eaue being interviewed. A producer off-camera asks, "What do you think of Rallygoer's year thus far?"

KONAN CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE DIRECTOR
"Rallygoer?"

"Yes, the Asterus four-year-old."

KONAN CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE DIRECTOR
"A fine year. For a four-year old."

"Winning two Major Ten races is quite the accomplishment."

KONAN CAHUFE-L’EAUE, KAN ROUE DIRECTOR
"We've done that 15 of the last 16 years."

"But not yet," the producer replies. Konan smiles.

Do You Believe In Miracles?
Prologue | Part 1 | Part 2
Part 3

10 matches down, 24 to go. Roslund Mirakaler now sat comfortably in 4th place in the Kongensliga standings, a dramatic improvement compared to their 16th place finish last year. Fans in the city of Roslund now feel a breath of fresh air that most weren’t alive to witness the last time the team was this good. While most didn’t use the “C” word quite yet, they knew that this team had the chance to do great things this year. However, their next match would be their biggest test yet, as they’re set to face off against their biggest rivals, the club that any Roslund native would curse until their last dying breath: Rega Lysborg.

The relationship between Rega Lysborg and Roslund Mirakaler has always been complicated, just like the relationship between the cities of Lysborg and Roslund. Similar to the cities they represent, Rega Lysborg seemed like the older sibling that got most of the love and affection, while Roslund Mirakaler acted more like a neglected step-sibling. Rega Lysborg was ‘officially’ the first team to join the Kongensliga (although several teams were established before them), and was created personally by King Halfdan IV, which means the club is owned and operated by the Solgavish Crown Estate today. In fact, Rega’s blue and magenta colors were inspired by King Halfdan IV’s daughters, Princesses Amelie and Karoline, who said that those were their favorite. Since Rega Lysborg started with a near unlimited budget, they quickly rose to prominence in the Solgavish football world by winning their first trophy, the 1930-31 Kongensliga title, just three years into their founding. Rega Lysborg would never let their foot off the gas after that, as the team has won dozens of Kongensliga titles afterwards, being the only team to win a title in every decade of their existence, with their longest drought being just 8 years. Rega Lysborg grew into the most prestigious team in Solgavden by far, every young Solgavish player dreamt of playing for them, and Rega had the funds to bring the best talent to their team. Roslund, on the other hand, had to fight and scrape in order to just keep the lights on, with the team even undergoing administration a few times over the years. Their current stadium, the historic Astermark Park, first opened in 1938 and only received a few renovations over the years, with the team only being able to afford to fix the most urgent problems at a time. The result is what home fans might call a “romantic football atmosphere”, while away fans would call it an “utter shithole that needs to be torn down ASAP”. Meanwhile, Rega Lysborg plays at the innovative and modern Prince Theodor Park, which first opened in 1997 and has almost double the capacity of Astermark Park.

Needless to say, Roslund’s rivalry with Relv Sisse was an evenly matched affair, while their rivalry with Rega Lysborg was almost the complete opposite. In fact, it was mostly one-sided, as most Rega Lysborg fans had the same disdain for Roslund that one might have towards an ant, or some other kind of insect. They were a punching bag at best, and a mild annoyance at worst. This year was no different, as Rega Lysborg looked to be entering a new golden age (as if they deserve it), while Roslund was in complete freefall before the season. After former Rega Lysborg legend Peter Strömberg left the Mirakaler to manage Rega Lysborg, he has cemented himself as one of the best coaches in the league, with Rega Lysborg even going undefeated during the 06’-07’ season, a feat that has been accomplished in Kongensliga history, even surpassing the legendary 86’-87’ Rega Lysborg team, which Strömberg was a key part of. They repeated their Kongensliga success in 07’-08’, and Rega Lysborg is hopeful for a possible threepeat going into 08’-09’. In the past, Rega Lysborg teams often looked like a glorified Kongensliga best XI, and this year was no different, as most of their starters were the undisputed best in their positions with years of world-class football under their belts.

Yet, the star of this Rega Lysborg team wasn’t an experienced starter for the best team in Solgavden, he was just 19, and already was oozing with talent. Sig Halvorsan first debuted for Helager FK at just 16 years old in 2005, and even scored in his first game off a free kick that was 33 yards out. The country soon fell in love with the wonderkid after that, giving him the nickname of “The Boy of Tomorrow”, which has only evolved into his “The Man of Tomorrow” nickname today. After two seasons playing for his hometown club Helager FK, he was unsurprisingly poached by one of the more successful Kongensliga teams, which happened to be Rega Lysborg, and Halvorsan has grown legend ever since. While he wasn’t a part of the 2006 “Eternals” team, he was a crucial part of Rega’s championship run the following year, earning his third straight Hirsch Trophy (best U21 player) in a row. Halvorsan was a tall and lanky kid, but had a powerful shot and physical edge to his game, making him almost a perfect #9. With the most hyped Solgavish prospect since the death of Harald Kistner on their side, Rega Lysborg looked to steamroll their opponent in matchday 11, yet Roslund had other plans for the league’s giants.

Emil Vardaman has had this match circled in his calendar for weeks, if not months before it’ll be played, and most of the players did too. Rega Lysborg was the team Roslund always wanted to beat every year, yet…they never did. Out of the 68 competitive matches these two teams played against each other over the past thirty years, Roslund has only come out on top three times: twice in the league, and once in the cup. Rega has always seemed to be out of reach for the “league’s bottom feeders”, and this only festered into resentment by Mirakaler players and fans alike. Every time Roslund hosts Rega Lysborg, fans would come in droves, lighting flares and yelling chants in an attempt to intimidate their opponents, only to be down by multiple goals at the half. Emil Vardaman has never beaten Rega Lysborg as a manager, but this Roslund Mirakaler was different, and he knew it. Once the whistle blew to start the match, Rega immediately put pressure on their opponents, with Halvorsan shooting a missile towards the goal that was barely stopped by an outstretched Hugo Krebs. Lysborg controlled possession early on, for Roslund to fall back deep in their own half. The home team only got a break from the onslaught one the referee awarded them a free kick, and they finally got the chance to work into the opposing half. By now, Roslund has grown into masters of the short passing game, never letting the ball stay at one player for more than five seconds at the most. Center backs Varshavsky and Holzer both pushed up the pitch to provide pressure, acting more like midfielders than defenders, while the actual midfielders, Braun and Keppler, pushed into attack. The first goal came at the 37th minute, as after a back pass from Bochanan feigning a shot, Robert Braun scored from a heater of a shot, sending the stadium into a frenzy. With the Rega Lysborg counter attack failing to materialize, the halftime whistle blew with Roslund up a miraculous 1-0.

To the Rega Lysborg players, the second half seemed more like a fever dream than an actual game, with them shooting over 15 shots on target, only for 18 year old goalkeeper Hugo Krebs to deflect them all like a man possessed. In fact, the Roslund defense played spectacularly in general, as the center backs, led by Dominic Straub, put up an impenetrable wall in front of the net, while both wingbacks, Granath and Kierkegaard, both pulled back to provide most of the counter pressing. The final nail in the coffin for Rega Lysborg came when Adrain Claeys scored his signature “long-shot-from-outside-the-box-that-should’ve-not-went-in-yet-somehow-it-did”, and Roslund claimed their first win against Rega Lysborg in a long, long time 2-0. Shutting out of the most electric Kongensliga offenses in recent memory was no easy task, and goalkeeper Hugo Krebs earned his Player of the Week trophy for this effort.

After the game, Roslund seemed to not let up in their form, going six games unbeaten, and climbing the standings into a whopping second place, under a win away from claiming the top spot from Rega. At the start of the season, they had 6000-to-1 odds to win the Kongensliga title, now this had shrunk to 350-to-1 odds. Roslund has proven themselves to be king slayers, but they still have a long way to go if they want to claim their first piece of silverware in decades.

Whilst the Jane Manoeck class was still under construction, it soon became apparent that an envisioned fleet of armoured cruisers was not financially feasible for the Navy. Moreover, the Navy concluded that it required greater numbers rather than sheer firepower, as its fleet was being rendered obsolete by rapid advancements elsewhere in the world. Fleet Plan 1905 was thus revised with the original inclusion of eight armoured cruisers, replaced with four coastal battleships. To study the feasibility of this plan, the Naval Design Bureau was established in 1904. With assistance from engineers at Szbedansk Shipbuilding, it was determined that a fleet of four so-called coastal battleships could be constructed for nearly half the cost of another order for two Jane Manoeck class cruisers. This came at a price however, the coastal battleships were far from ocean-going vessels, possessing severely limited range. The Naval Design Bureau chose to prioritise displacement for armour and armament over endurance. In 1906, Szbedansk Shipbuilding and the KSU were awarded contracts to build two units each of what would become the Monarch class. The names of the Monarch class were closely tied to the Kanzlian monarchy, which stirred some unease within the largely left-leaning KSU. The KSU ultimately declined to continue the contract after completing Koningin Regentes. In fact, they insisted on building that ship only on the condition that it bore the name of the Queen Regent, who was born in Kotr. Szbedansk Shipbuilding assumed responsibility for the third and fourth Monarch class ships in 1907, and by 1911 all four units had entered service.

The Monarch class became the navy's most sophisticated warship for a short while until the Stalwart class came to service. During the 1915 Syber War, the Navy deployed the Monarch class to Syberi waters to support coastal bombardments around Loret. On 11 July 1915, the Kanzlian and Syberi battlefleets clashed off Cape Ouazane. The Kanzlian fleet, assisting a naval landing near the Syberi port of Cresel, was attacked by the Syberi battlefleet stationed further north. Initially caught off guard, the Kanzlian ships regrouped in disarray before retreating to reorganise. Amid the chaos, Genadige Vorst became isolated at the rear of the fleet. Surrounded by an armoured cruiser and three protected cruisers, she was cornered further and further toward the coastline. Battered by the four-to-one engagement, Genadige Vorst suffered a magazine detonation at 15:30 hours, which tore open the aft section of the ship. Despite the damage, she continued to fire her remaining main gun while flames spread across the vessel. Eventually, Genadige Vorst lost steering and beached herself several kilometres from Cresel. Her wreck continued to burn into the following day, when a second magazine explosion ignited the remaining fuel stores.

Despite her loss, Genadige Vorst’s final stand inflicted serious damage, crippling the Syberi protected cruiser Mikelsen beyond repair (she was later scrapped after the war) and putting the armoured cruiser Wylkseth out of action ahead of the decisive Battle of Loret Coast the following month. Every member of Genadige Vorst’s crew was posthumously awarded the Szedin Military Order for their bravery. Her surviving sister ships later participated in the Battle of Loret Coast, during which three of them sank the two Syberi protected cruisers responsible for Genadige Vorst’s destruction. After the war, the class’s compartmentalisation came under scrutiny due to the catastrophic magazine detonation. Modifications were subsequently introduced to improve the survivability of both the Monarch class and the forthcoming Stalwart class battleships.

The Monarch class continued to serve within the Kanzlian Battlefleet, though they were effectively superseded by the Koningin class coastal defence ships introduced in 1942. By then, the Monarchs were already worn down from decades of service. In 1950, Monarch and Koningin Regentes were decommissioned and repurposed as target ships, ultimately being sunk the following year. Koningsbloed, however, followed a different path. In 1947, she was converted into a small aircraft carrier with a flight deck installed. (See more under Koningsbloed aircraft carrier for details.) She was finally decommissioned in 1995.

SKMN Sports Network Rebrand

The sports network side of SKMN has been rebranded to The VARroom. The rebrand allows for a greater focus on one of the most popular sports in Soviet Kem, football, while also targeting the youth of Soviet Kem, inspiring them to aspire to go to The Echo Grid, while also providing some comedy between Bahav Xakin and Stev Burlam, the main two writers of the sports network. They will still be writing sports related posts, but they now have a live show to broadcast their thoughts on each play, result, and comment by anyone involved in Soviet Kemrainan football. There may be new additions to the show, but that is still unclear, as of this time The VARroom will put out a post on the recent two matchdays, but for the next two there will be live coverage, post-match interviews, and more!

Unofficial World Championship Scenarios for Matchdays 17 and 18 of Qualifying
By: Clarice Chaussee

With the Republican National Soccer Team eliminated from World Cup qualifying following its 1 goal to nil loss in Yangchenia, we doubt that our readers want to read any more about the team's disappointing campaign. Barring a total collapse, Juvencus and Sernet will be the 2 teams to advance from Group 13. We congratulate both of them and we wish Sernet luck in the playoff it is likely to participate in. It would be great to see them qualify in their first attempt.

Turning to the Unofficial World Championship lineages, we should start with a correction. There were 4 "Unofficial World Champions" coming into this edition of the World Cup. The "lineal" title, tracing back to the first World Cup match ever, was held by Kimi-Suomi. There's are also several "interim" titles. One of these is held by Endray-Island and was last defended 91 years ago in World Cup 9 qualifying before they disappeared with the title. It was created because then "lineal" champion Brazillico did not enter World Cup 7. One of them was held by the FFR following World Cup 85. Another was created after World Cup 85 and is currently held by Brookstation who disappeared after winning World Cup 96. None of this is likely news to our foreign readers.

Originally, 3 of these titles were going to be defended in the current World Cup but Brookstation unexpectedly withdrew at the last minute because the WCC could not reach them to verify their entry. This left 2 of the titles up for grabs in this World Cup. Kimi-Suomi's title in Group 17 is the less complicated story. They won their first 8 matches then lost 3 goals to nil to Aleirave on Matchday 9. With the title, Aleirave have won 4 matches and drawn 2 since. Which means they are still the reigning "lineal" Unofficial World Champion. Aleirave's remaining schedule is a home match against Anonymegg on matchday 17 followed by a visit to Kimi-Suomi on matchday 18. But what if Anonymegg pulls off the upset? In that case, they would host Veleste on matchday 18 and there is a significant chance that the "lineal" belt will go the way of the Endray-Island belt, never to be seen again.

As for the other belt, the one that our National Team held, it has somehow been split into 3 different lineages over the course of this World Cup cycle. The title officially recognized by Sporting World as the legitimate "Unofficial World Championship" is currently held by the Imperator's Cup champions Nordernious and may very well not leave the Imperator's Cup until the FFR wins it back in that highly prestigious tournament. It is not in any danger on the final 2 matchdays of this World Cup qualifying campaign.

The other 2 lineages are in Group 13. The split occurred because of the expulsion of Jeruselem. As you know, we came into this World Cup holding this lineage, which doesn't count Imperator's Cup matches. We beat Lisander, New Rotterdam City and Macbon. Then we drew Juvencus. At that point, it looked like we were going to make a serious run at qualifying for the World Cup. Then the bottom fell out, starting with a 1 goal to nil loss to Sernet on matchday 5. Sernet would lose 4 goals to 2 in Jeruselem on matchday 6. However, Jeruselem would later be expelled from the tournament, so the lineage splits in 2 here:

Jeruselem matches count lineage: Jeruselem loses the belt 2-0 to Yangchenia on matchday 7. Yangchenia retains 4-1 @ Lisander on matchday 8, 4-1 vs New Rotterdam City on matchday 9, 3-0 vs Macbon on matchday 10. Juvencus beats Yangchenia 2-0 on matchday 11 then retains via 0-0 draw @ Yuezhou on matchday 12, 3-1 vs the FFR on matchday 13, 2-1 vs Lisander on matchday 15, 6-4 @ New Rotterdam City on matchday 16

Jeruselem matches don't count lineage: Sernet retains the title until losing 1-0 @ Lisander on matchday 16.

Going into the final 2 matchdays, these belts are held by Juvencus and Lisander. Lisander holds the one that only counts "official" World Cup 100 Qualifying matches that haven't been expunged from the record books. Juvencus holds the one that counts the Jeruselem title reign.

Juvencus will defend against Macbon at home on matchday 17. If they win, they will take the belt into World Cup 100. Also if they draw and Sernet doesn't make up a 7 goal deficit in goal difference (+17 to +10). If Macbon wins, they will host Sernet on matchday 18 who will likely be playing for the right to take this belt into the playoffs.

Lisander's belt will be defended on both matchdays 17 and 18 regardless of the outcome. Lisander visits Yangchenia on matchday 17. If they win or draw, they will defend at home against Yuezhou on matchday 18. If Yangchenia takes the belt, they must defend it at New Rotterdam City.

This means that it is now impossible for the 2 lineages created by the Jeruselem expulsion to be unified before the end of World Cup qualifying. It is entirely possible that neither of them will even be contested at the World Cup proper or Cup of Harmony this year as it appears very doubtful that Macbon, Lisander or Yuezhou will be competing in the Cup of Harmony. If the belts are in the possession of Yangchenia and either Sernet or Juvencus, it appears far more likely that both will be defended again this year. (OOC: I'm breaking the 3rd wall a bit here but based on RP levels, I think Yangchenia has a good chance of a CoH invite, at least based on the standards in a normal cycle in the past. Macbon is rosterless and I don't think either Lisander or Yuezhou has RPed once.) But given that this is far from the first World Cup for Macbon, Lisander and Yuezhou and that Sernet and Yangchenia are 2 of the most promising first timer nations in this year's qualifying field, an Endray-Island situation appears extremely unlikely here.

OOC: Just a quick RP tonight to keep my 9 for 9 cutoff window RPing streak alive in case I don't RP again before cutoff. Hope I didn't infringe too much on Audio's gimmick but I intend to treat all 3 lineages I created this cycle as part of my canon "Unofficial World Championship" until they're unified. The main storylines I started in qualifying will be continued as I feel I've only scratched the surface of the story I'd planned on writing. You can expect to see me back for cycle 101 and likely returning to many other tournaments where I have a history as well.

World Cup 100 - Article
Going into the last four match days of the qualifiers, Choppyhausen sat in the pole position for the race to the playoff spot in Group 20. Six points ahead of Sangti and the Filindo Isles and eight ahead of TJUN-ia looked like a comfortable lead even if their contenders had a game in hand on them. But now, two crucial losses against their most important opponents later, it looks like the Team in Teal might drop out of the Top 2 for the very first time in this World Cup… at the very last match day.

Choppyhausen manages to qualify for the World Cup Playoffs, if…

Choppyhausen WINS their match against Behh
AND Sangti and the Filindo Isles do not win both of their games against Lignuntia and New Arbuckle
AND TJUN-ia do not win both of their games against Valentine Z and Lignuntia

Choppyhausen DRAWS their match against Behh
AND Sangti and the Filindo Isles do not win either of their games against Lignuntia and New Arbuckle
AND TJUN-ia do not win either of their games against Valentine Z and Lignuntia

Choppyhausen LOSES their match against Behh
AND Sangti and the Filindo Isles get a draw and a loss or two losses out of their games against Lignuntia and New Arbuckle
AND TJUN-ia get a draw and a loss or two losses out of their games against Valentine Z and Lignuntia

There are a few additional possibilities for Choppyhausen to reach the playoffs when they are tied in points with their competitors, however as both SFI and TJUN-ia have a better goal difference than Choppyhausen to win the tiebreaker, they would need to win against Behh with 14+ goals (or their opponents would have to lose by the same margin). While scorelines like this have occurred in these qualifiers they are highly unlikely and were therefore disregarded.

As we can see from the possibilities graphic, for Choppyhausen not to completely bury their chances at participating in the World Cup, they need to secure their must-win victory against Behh on matchday 17 before hoping for their contenders to make a crucial mistake in one of their remaining games. True to the motto “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”, Choppyhausenians now have to hope for a win or at least a draw from Valentine Z (who have already directly qualified and are the most likely prevent TJUN-ia from getting six points in the next two games) or Lignuntia against the Jaguars and simultaneously support New Arbuckle and Lignuntia against Sangti and the Filindo Isles (arguably the harder task as both sides reside on 5th and 6th place).

Losing 2-0 at home against your closest competitors was not what Coach Merrit had hoped for. This game marked the first loss at home for the Team in Teal since the 0-2 against New Arbuckle back on Matchday 3 — and it came at the worst possible time for Choppyhausen. But while their own offense failed to create any meaningful chances in the first half of the match, Sangti and the Filindo Isles arrived prepared. Weiner-Kracht was able to stop the first advances through Makalintal and Cerdeno but he was ultimately defeated by a precise free-kick from Sulangi shortly before the half-time break. Choppyhausen came back better after the break managing but failed to get past Labawig who once again put on an impressive performance. Their offensive efforts were abruptly brought to a halt when Holdenbeck received his second yellow card in the 68th minute and was sent off. Down to ten men, Choppyhausen retreated back in their own half – they missed the opportunity for the equalizer. Instead, their opponents managed to get another goal ten minutes before the end: Reano was faster than Lampe and put it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

“Beating the giant is possible, we’ve done it before.” Those were the words of Manuel Weiner-Kracht, goalkeeper and captain of Choppyhausen, before the match in Roi Ville, TJUN-ia. But instead of beating the giant, the Team in Teal received a beating of their own. With 4-0 the Choppyhausenians were thrown out of the Stade de la Victoire, the biggest loss in the nation’s short history of international football. After the game, the Vastona News published this short but accurate review of the game:

“Salomo Obdach was seemingly not capable of adequately replacing Holdenbeck as an important part of the defense, Jule Corte looked like he was aiming for the audience more often than he was aiming for the goal, Andre Finch enjoyed watching his opponent’s qualities so much that he forgot to do anything against them and the rest of the team could have been replaced by random audience members and no one would have noticed.”
Even worse for Choppyhausen: While they got destroyed in TJUN-ia, Sangti and the Filindo Isles managed to draw against Valentine Z, leaving their once large lead diminished to two points and that with a Bye coming on the last matchday.

“They told me to do some commentary about current events, like the perfection of everything coming down to the final window,” said Sigismund Schiltze and adjusted his feathered green felt cap, “but how can you say something about today and tomorrow without firstly discoursing protractedly on the many yesterdays of time gone by,” he continued and took a long swig from his stein while overlooking the sea of red and white flags moving down Kauderwelsch Straße on their way to Silbernes Lärchenstadion on the slopes just north of fair Brinterberg. “So while you might expect a small treatise on who of us that will live on to fight another day, I instead invite you to sit down and brace yourself for the near-ending of How The Horkenheimers Ended Up Here.” Herr Schiltze devoured his last bite of a somewhat stodgy Stollen and smacked his lips in contentment, before continuing: “Call me old fashioned, but when the sauce splits, you create a new emulsion, so I suggest we now whisk away to Part 15, wherein the Horkenheimers endure a fiery baptismal and reignites the flame of Seebergundian FußBall, in no small part with the help of talking horses.

“We are now almost at the point of being able to speak of today, and closing in on the prospect of saying something about tomorrow. But not quite.

Firstly, we must speak at length of what is known, out there Beyond-The-Berge, as The Baptism of Fire, and also of what they call The World Cup. Color me surprised when I first learned of these events, and I can only imagine Coach Adorno felt the same way when he was enlightened to their existence some time during the 24th IAC far-far away in the fabled lands of Lazarus.

I haven't spoken to him directly about it, so I cannot be quite sure of how it transpired. What is known is that the 24th IAC differed slightly from previous editions for Coach Adorno and his Horkenheimers. It was never easy, showing up as complete newcomers at the 21st edition of a storied competition like the IAC, and it was made especially difficult by barely being accustomed to the game played. Add to that the fact that Seebergundians rarely, if ever, left their valleys beneath the great mountains to go out galavanting around in the world. The point is that they kept to themselves, The Horkenheimers. Some of them surely made a point about distancing themselves from murky foreigners of lesser lands, because it would be an understatement to say there’s a strain of xenophobia and ideas about Seebergundian Supremacy coursing through the veins of our society, but from what I’ve gathered most of the players and staff just felt small and oddly out of place being one amongst infinitely many in strange places like Reçueçn and Britonisea.

This all changed with The Quiet FußBall Revolution, wherein The Gemeinschaft - in an uncharacteristically swift manner - decided to forego their traditions and adapt to international footballing standards. They say this filled both Coach Adorno and his players with a newfound sense of purpose, and upon arriving in Saterun for the 24th IAC they felt a greater sense of belonging - apart from the odd hardliner Seebergundian Supremacist, of course, but there’s no reasoning with such people - and started cautiously fraternizing more with other delegations.

Perhaps it was someone associated with the teams from Indusse or Juvencus, big names with storied footballing pasts, or maybe he learned it from the hosting Sateryuns or those flashy Taxhavnites. No matter the how, when Coach Adorno and the rest of the Seebergundian contingent returned home, they brought with them stories of an international FußBall competition far grander in scale than even the IAC. It was called The World Cup, and if 24 editions of the IAC was an impressive number, heads at the SFV were proverbially blown when informed that the 100th edition of The World Cup was on the horizon.

It is hard to fathom! One hundred editions. Just imagine, when HändeFußy was in its infancy beneath the great mountains of Seebergundia, there were nations out there competing against one another for the title of World Champions of FußBall! Did you know, a place simply going by the moniker The Holy Empire actually competed in that very first World Cup? And now they were set to participate in the 100th. Makes you think.

In this new age of FußBall enthusiasm, it was quickly decided that the SFV should sign up to attempt at qualifying for this illustrious World Cup. The gauntlet of actually reaching the Cup itself was an arduous and nigh impossible task by all accounts, but there was a sense of determinacy permeating the walls of Haus Tolleknolle. However, when SFV Director Walter Freudlingen initiated the process of signing up The Gemeinschaft for participation, a prudent functionary of the World Cup Committee alerted him to the fact that Seeberg was also eligible to take part in a competition preceding World Cup qualifications and open only to those who had never before competed in a WCC sanction event. It was called The Baptism of Fire, or BoF for short. Thereby, Coach Adorno and his Horkenheimers would not only try to qualify for The World Cup, but also travel to the distant lands of Arrosia to participate in the biggest ever rendition of the BoF.

In the time since The Quiet Revolution, things had begun to slowly settle in the world of Seebergundian FußBall. The SSL was now operational and the associations of Seebergundia had taken some massive strides in adapting to Neues FußBall. While the inaugural SSL title was claimed by capital powerhouse SV Brinterberg, the biggest surprise of the early SSL days was the prowess of the provincial associations, where SVG Kügeldorf clinched the very first runners-up position and northern neighbor PuFG Hinterdorf ended a respectable 5th, above such prestigious associations as BSV St. Paulina and VfB Brinterberg. Attendance was still very sparse, however, despite considerable SFV promotion about there being «a new game in town».

The Baptism of Fire was to take place in three different countries, where The Horkenheimers were to play their initial games in a place called Banija. They had been allotted a spot in Group 8, along teams from unheard of places like Bonusia, Tornadico and Nova Dackians, who they were to play in that order. The maturing of the SSL and the Seebergundian FußBall associations was a blessing for Coach Adorno and his staff, since this opened up a whole new world of possibilities for selection of Horkenheimers. There was a lengthy period of trials and assessments - with great interest from many players - and when the roster had been completed, Coach Adorno felt certain that The Horkenheimers had never been a more competitive force.

Despite great expectations, The Horkenheimers’ very first WCC-sanctioned game was to be a loss against The Black Star of Bonusia. It was a hardfought battle though, and after the fact you were left with the feeling it could've easily gone the other way. Coach Adorno and his men fared better in their subsequent games and produced two very solid triumphs, winning with 3 goals to 1 against Tornadico, and 4 goals to none against Nova Dackians. This landed them in second place, and thereby secured them a place in the comically vast knockout bracket. Their progression was a big deal, to again speak in the parlance of our times. The Horkenheimers had survived a group stage before - in the 23rd IAC - but the feeling of manifest destiny was greater this time around, seeing as you only ever had one chance at competing in the BoF.

Sadly, this feat went by utterly unnoticed by the vast majority of people in Brinterberg. I viewed all three group games at the Altes Faxen kneipe on Schnickschnack Platz up in the Münsterheim Quarter, and while there was a few other patrons, I was indeed the only one even remotely interested in the SeeTV broadcast. I even had to plead with the proprietress to make her put on the games! Yet, this all changed when The Horkenheimers were to play in the baptismal Round of 64.

Because of talking horses.

Or, perhaps I should say talking ponies. Or Earth ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns, apparently coexisting with other talking animals like griffons, dragons, changelings, and buffalo! Yes, the host of The Horkenheimers’ next game was the ancient and strange lands of Equestria. A supposedly sorcerous dominion inhabited primarily by sapient ponies living in harmony through friendship and magic, this was a place where mastery of the arcane had created a prosperous and environmentally conscious society, that still waged their share of wars every now and then, if you are to believe publications like Einsamer Planet.

If your mind is blown by the revelation of a centennial World Cup, imagine a nation of proud equestrians learning of the existence of magical ponies. I know I had a hard time believing it at first, but there was seemingly no denying that the world out there Beyond-The-Berge was infinitely more than we ever could have imagined.

As exciting as talking horses are for me personally, the most important part about The Horkenheimers travelling to Equestria was that this also caught the eye of virtually everyone in The Gemeinschaft. The youngsters quickly fell madly in love with the adorableness of these ponies and youth fashion transformed overnight, whereas the critical theorists of the Institute for Sozial Research were deeply fascinated with the ponies’ egalitarian principles, the revolutionary potential of their Friendship concept, and how the use of magic could contribute to subverting hegemonic societal structures. And the upstanding people of Brinterbergundian Society, they were predictably horrified by it all, but could not help themselves from watching.

Whatever your take, the result was that Equestria, The Baptism of Fire, The Horkenheimers and FußBall was suddenly on everyone's lips, and if I had the SeeTV broadcast of the group stage games to myself, I was hardly able to get through the door at the Altes Faxen when The Horkenheimers played their Ro64 game against Mystris.

Which they subsequently won!

In extra time, no less. And this is where it starts to get exciting, because once the talking ponies had lured people to the TV-screens, they were motivated to stay by the sheer excitement of their countrymen excelling at this strange and beautiful game (which was nothing at all like the FußBall they pictured in their minds). I would say it was around when Sebastian Grünberg - a VfB Brinterberg striker playing with the precision of a man raised on military drills - scored both once and twice against Mystris, securing Horkenheim progression, that the flame of FußBall passion was reignited amongst the people of fair Brinterberg. And if the win against Mystris wasn't enough to convince you, the triumphs against Bull Sheet and Biyambi in the rounds of 32 and 16 surely did.

In the end, it was the familiar face of Choppyhausen that put an end to The Horkenheimers’ miraculous BoF run, besting us with 1 goal to none in Stalliongrad’s Diamond Park. And while there is always the inevitable disappointment of what if when you get knocked out, the Baptism of Fire - and in no small part the ponies of Equestria - had worked its magic and awakened a small nation nestled in the valleys beneath the great mountains.”

The following is an excerpt from a series of articles published by leading Katzeburgian gaming magazine Starter Life.

Over the past months, we've been lucky enough to share some of the heart-warming and heart-breaking stories which have echoed through Lands of Eternia over all the years the game has been live through the lens of the initial beta group; those first batch of players who broke out onto Eternia Island and changed the direction of the game entirely through their own actions.

But the more eagle-eyed of you will notice that for many of these stories, they all happened within the first five to seven years of the game's life. That was not by design - the peak of the game itself was at the turn of the Katzeburgian Revolution and the immediate years afterwards, and based on research from the University of Aberstadt - it's suggested that when it comes to MMOs in particular, the average player lifecycle is at a push eight years.

Normally a player will jump onto an MMO, do everything they want to do over a period of months to a few years, and then find a new game with the community they had formed or embedded into. Lands of Eternia was different in that regard to an extent - because it was the first off the rank; many players stuck with LoE for as long as they did purely because it was their first MMO, their first community, their first home. But time comes for us all, and even the most steeled of players would eventually find a new home, be it another game or life just taking precedence over whatever time they could spend on Eternia Island. And with newer, more flashier games coming out and wowing the next generation of gamers, less and less new people were finding Lands of Eternia at all. The game's playerbase would naturally wane down over the years, and you only need to look at recent game figures to see just how close to death Lands of Eternia has really been.

In the week before Mercer Software announced they were going to be sunsetting the game, less than 50 unique players logged in over the course of the entire week. The game, once incredibly noisy due to the constant pinging of the in-game chatter and the sheer amount of player-led adventures you could go on, was now all but silent - players stretched far and wide across the island itself and meaning many of the in-game mechanics players had come to love over the years were now stuttering to a hard stop. The player-led economy crashed as supply dried up, with remaining players opting to instead focus on questing rather than working collaboratively to stimulate the game's economy, meaning the bar for a new player would get higher and higher the later in the game's life you'd go. Many of the player-built and led towns were now ghost towns, echoes of the past as the guilds which once built them had either long collapsed or moved on to different things.

It means that one of Mercer Software's ultimate end-goal of the game for players, to reach the 'Grand Master' rank of a specific class tree, would only be achieved by one player in the history of the game, becoming the sole person who can justifiably say they had experienced absolutely everything the game had to offer. It's only natural that this player too, was one of the original beta group all those years ago and is the only one of that batch who still regularly logs onto the game itself. The player walderbore - actual name Edward Cooper, a librarian who has worked at the West Katzestadt Public Library for more than three decades - joined the game as part of the initial beta testing group after he responded to a small advertisement in the local paper The Katzestadt Times.

"Back then it seemed like a good way to pass the time while things were a bit quiet in the library," Edward told us. "I just never got bored by what was out there." Edward is now in his mid-60's, nearing the age of retirement and to him, the fact the game is now being sunsetted after all these years is a little ironic to him. "Of course they had to switch it all off the day I am due to retire," he chuckled. "I was looking forward to spending a lot more time heading around the world and seeing every single inch of what was there."

Edward was part of a small subset of players who were deeply into being fully immersed into the game and its world - an avid roleplayer, walderbore would be a familiar face to many in the general chat over the years for even the slightest move which would actively harm the immersion into the game world he was feeling. "There were a couple of regulars who would just always stir up trouble," Edward said sternly. "But we were all inhabiting Eternia Island, they just had to do it by the rules and they weren't."

It may stand to question just what exactly one player could do in game for more than 27 years, but when we put that question to walderbore himself - he just chuckled. "You kids," he said (Editor's Note - the journalist who wrote this article is 42). "You could do anything on Eternia Island, and I wanted to explore it all. Crafting was my passion though, and that system was something I have dropped thousands of hours to alone."

Indeed, Crafting is the very skill that walderbore has achieved the Grand Master rank in - a rank which required more than 5,000 in-game hours working on a specific skill as well as the completion of a long-running questline which could take the average player more than three years to finish.

"The game just had that level of depth to it," Edward said. "Many tried to become a grand master, but the level of commitment needed was often too much for players to stick with - I saw too many players burn out because of sticking solely with the grind to get to the rank rather than enjoying the journey to get there. That's what most people forgot about Lands of Eternia in the later stages of its life - the game was meant to be experienced, not just a way to hit level to level. The best experiences I remember were ones that were with other players, just existing in the same world."

To many remaining players on Eternia Island, walderbore has become something of an enigma; a mystery of a player who exists in the world but is almost untouchable, viewing the world down from beyond as some sort of living god. Their interactions with the player are rare, if ever - walderbore often spending his time playing through high-level raids by himself or simply wandering the lands to the northern side of Eternia Island, seeing what exists as the island lives out its final days. "I was there for basically all the big moments in the history of the game," Edward said with a smile. "Always on the side rather than in the main action, but I was there. They were the reasons I kept playing - the feeling that anyone could do anything and make their mark in the world. In a way, it's a little ironic that I've ended up making my own mark in the game itself just by refusing to actually leave."

But how do you solve a problem like a declining player base? Is it something you should even want to do? walderbore has his own thoughts about it. "Is it worth throwing something in to resurrect a game which was already declining just to keep it running for a few more months or years?" he asked us. "Not everything is meant to be permanent and the experiences shared by those who played Lands of Eternia are just ones which should remain shared between those who enjoyed the game at the time. "The game is heading to an end and that's absolutely fine. I've made my peace with it and just because it goes down overnight doesn't mean the years of memories I've made with friends and guild members suddenly vanishes into the cosmos - they'll stick with me as a special moment in a life well lived."

One thing we've reported on in recent weeks is the push from some players to both return to Eternia Island in the final months of the server's life, celebrating 27 years of a game well-lived and using it as a way to reminisce about milestone moments in their own time with Lands of Eternia, and this has been welcomed by walderbore. "It would be great to see all those players from years ago return for one final day in the game," Edward said. "We should see the final days of the game as a celebration of what made this game a beloved part of so many people's lives and I'll be welcoming all those who have come back with open arms."

Nostalgia can be a hell of a drug. The ever-yearning desire to return to what we loved in our youth as a gentle reminder of when things felt safe, or happy, or manageable when compared with the modern day hellscape which can often be so many of our lives. And it will be nostalgia which has so far driven a lot of players back to Eternia Island after the announcement from Mercer Software that the game will be running out the clock in the next few months. Hell, it was even nostalgia which led to this entire series as a whole, with many of us in the Starter Life offices talking about the good times and hours lost as a younger player to the MMO - so why is it so hard to let go of something that we know is coming to an end? "It's because for many of us, we always assumed it would be there," Edward told us. "Even if players left Eternia Island, they'd be safe in the knowledge that in six months, or a year or two - they could come back and rejoin that community and it would be like hugging an old friend. But once the plug is pulled, that safety net is gone. We're scared as to what will come next; having to live our lives in the unknown knowing that what was once a trusted friend and support is now gone, lost to the cosmos."

Edward Cooper has seen loss in his life. His wife of thirty years Margaret passed away last year and the experience rapidly changed his view on not only mortality, but how he had spent his life to that point. "She'd hate me for it, but I don't think I ever regretted a moment spent in that game," Edward laughed. "Maggie was always giving me the hard yards, telling me that game was pointless and I could do so much more with my time, like reading or gardening. But that was my hobby; it was what I enjoyed doing, and I would never give that up."

So what does the last man standing on Eternia Island think of the game's looming end? "I'll welcome it with the open arms I was talking about earlier," he told us. "Times change. People move on. Lands of Eternia should be a treasured memory to all of us who played it, but some things are better being left behind in the past."

Blue Cats see off Empire to head into final window with it all to play for

By Otis Huffman, KBC

A rousing home performance at Anchor Field has helped Katzeburg maintain touching distance with playoff rivals Natkr as both sides head into the final window of the World Cup 100 Qualifiers. The Blue Cats only had one match in the penultimate window, which was handled with ease in front of a packed Anchor Field in Inverhaven, storming to a 5-0 win over the Manuelian Empire to give the Blue Cats 15 goals at the Inverhaven City ground without reply across their two games there.

Drake Wruck was the star of the show for Katzeburg, picking up his third hat-trick of the campaign with relative ease, opening the scoring in the 20th minute through a powerful header off a Serena Plank cross before adding his second in the 37th minute with a tap-in of a loose ball through the box on his left foot. His right foot would complete the perfect hat-trick in the 74th minute with a curling shot from the edge of the box which snuck past the outstretched arms of the keeper and buried itself into the top left corner - taking Wruck to 96 national team goals for Katzeburg and 17 goals for the campaign. Elmer Spears would find the back of the net to further extend the Katzeburgian lead in the 61st minute, while Elvin Greenberg staked his claim for further game-time in the national setup by picking up his third goal in five appearances for the Blue Cats - stabbing home a volley in the box in the final ten minutes to seal a thumping win for the Katzeburgians.

"We did what we needed to do at the end of the day, which was take all three points and help build out a strong goal differential," Katzeburg manager Becka Haberkorn told media at Anchor Field after the game. "We're keeping the pressure on Natkr and that's all we can do at this stage of the cycle; they have a tough end to the campaign where they'll need to be on top form - as will we - and I can't see them giving up for a second."

"If we end up missing out again by the slimmest of margins then of course it's disappointing, but I don't think it will be legacy defining for our team we've assembled here. This is a nation which less than four years ago made it's debut on the world stage and since then we've been to a World Cup, made a number of semi-finals and even hosted the biggest sporting event in Esportiva. I can see how there's a narrative of we never turn up for the big games, but this squad is young and hungry and these experiences will shape them for the rest of their careers in a positive manner."

The result means heading into the final two matchdays, there are three nations vying for life in Group 21 and the elusive playoff position, with Pasarga having already secured their position as group winners with two games to go. All eyes will be on the result in Matchday 17 over in Natkr, as the Green on Blue hosts Kaumann with Kaumann's chance at a playoff spot on the line. A Natkr win will kill off the chances of Kaumann to advance to the playoffs, while a Kaumann win would move the side within a point of the Green on Blue. Meanwhile they'll be keeping an eye on results in Atheara as the unranked nation hosts Katzeburg with a Blue Cats win potentially taking them into second heading into the final matchday, while a loss would end their campaign should Natkr see off Kaumann.

Should all three sides remain alive for the final matchday, it could be a panicked watch for Katzeburgians, as Natkr heads to the Manuelian Empire needing a result to progress, while Kaumann hosts Europeasia at home hoping to turn around their negative goal difference. The Blue Cats meanwhile, host Felinetopia in the Cat Derby - a game which could see Katzeburg needing a win to ensure passage to the playoffs. Should both Katzeburg and Natkr end up level on points, the spot will go to the Green on Blue due to the virtue of their pair of wins over the Blue Cats. Katzeburg's chance at making their second ever World Cup appearance is no longer in their hands, and only the cosmos can guide them through now.

"Yo Markus. How's it hanging?"

"Good evening Mr Message. I am feeling pleasantly salubrious thank you, though as I cannot imagine that you are seeking to merely make idle gossip, might I enquire for what do I owe this p... I mean to say, may I ask for what is the reason of your call?"

"Soooo, I was thinking about these referendinium results, and the ramalamadingdongifications of having a totally tied vote."

"Go on ..."

"Well, given that the vote was banana-split fifty-fifty, how about we doodle-oo the same to Erroropolis?"

"I don't follow."

"Okay. So half the popitulation want independence, and half want non-independence."

"That is also what I garnered from the results."

"So we banana-split the city in half. You get the north, I get the south."

"Technically, I wouldn't get anything. I act merely as a conduit for the peoples of Oeopolis who seek to remain attached to the nation of Paradystopia. Peoples who have little interest in yielding further political powers to an individual who has repeatedly displayed a gross ineptitude in all the qualities one should expect of a leader. Nevertheless, the denizens of this island have indeed made their opinions known, and it is our responsibility as public servants to respect these voices irrespective of one's personal standpoint upon such matters. Please, enlighten me further with your unconventional proposal."

"Well, initialifically I thought we could carve a large trench from weast to est through the centre of the city, but that would probe-ably involve destroyifying a lot of buildings and I don't think either of us wouldwork want that. Then I thoughted we could have a fence instead, but that wouldwork also get in the way a lot. So how about, we just drawdle a line on the floorislava?"

"Assuming I have understood this correctly, your proposal is simply to paint a land border that bisects the city?"

"Indeedio. Everyonesawinner south of this line is Erroropolisish Paradystopi, and everyonesawinner to the north, just regular, boring Paradystopi."
"Would you have any intention to impinge upon freedom of movement between the two states?"

"Nope."

"Would there be any levies or tax upon trade between the two states?"

"Should there be?"

"Would I be correct in the assumption that Southern Oeopolis, or Erroropolis if you will, would essentially function in very much the same manner that it currently does with the sole exception that there would simply be a line on the ground designating it as a state independent of Paradystopia?"

"Prettytitty much. Oh, but I'll be the jump-leadser in the southern bit. Like a nobble; a duke or something."

"So, a fancy title, and a partition in image only? These would be your demands?"

"Yup. If I think of anything else, I'll lettuce you know."

"Ooo ooo ooo. You needleinahaystack to come and see my new throne! Come, come!"

Olii found himself shepherded into a room of elegant architecture, something that had originally been beautiful yet was now tainted with all the hallmarks of Error's design ethic. Brash gold ornamentation, loud colours that clashed with each other with all the delicacy of two sumo wrestlers beginning a particularly important bout, and exorbitant depictions of the man himself in a vast array of improbable heroic poses. The eye was led kicking, screaming, and in agony, to a huge edifice of a chair adorned with a small golden sign saying 'Error's throne'.

"So you did it then. Do I have to call you 'King Error' or something now?"

"Haha. Oh no, of threecoursemeal not, I am not a king. 'His excellency' will suffice."

"Okay, I did have a question though."

"..."

"...Your Excellency"

"You may ask."

"So, if you're now the Excellency of Erroropolisish Paradystopia now. Does that mean you're ineligible to play for the Paradystopi national football team?"

"Ah ... Oh ... Ermm ... shit."

Uwe Bärwald is arguably the most famous fashion designer from the Union and the designer of sports uniforms for both the national football team and the Olympic squads. He joined our interviewer for a conversation about his life amid the centenary World Cup as his nation wears his uniforms. He talks about his life, passion, and sporting opinions throughout this interview, which will be released as a series.

Part 3
Part 4

INT: Thank you so much for telling us about your business. Now let’s move to what many people following this World Cup are interested in. Your sports ventures. You have been quite active in sport, and actually own a professional franchise, correct?

UB: That is correct, I am the owner of the Berlin Bears basketball team in my home city. It has been one of the most nationally successful of the German clubs in basketball, having won four titles in the German region’s league and one overall national title over teams representing each region of the Union. That national victory gave me great joy; basketball is a wonderful sport and always gifts me with a lot of emotions.

INT: Basketball has always been a more minor sport in the Union, behind hockey and football, yet you have been a consistent advocate for it and sought to grow the sport. Why is that?

UB: Part of it is to bring unity to the city of Berlin. In other major sports leagues we are divided between two teams, but in basketball there is only one team in Berlin. That is part of the reason I bought it and have invested in its growth financially. In other sports you become a fan of one club or the other, but in basketball one can be a fan of Berlin only.

INT: You have designed sports uniforms for your basketball club, as well as for a couple of clubs in the Football Premier League and the national teams in the Olympics. What goes into sports uniform design, as that can be very different from day-to-day fashion in many cases.

UB: Sports uniform design places many constraints on the designer that other garments may not. In many cases, the design itself is very standardized, then there are the club’s colors which may not be changed, and so on. For example, once when designing uniforms for a club who wore blue and white, the decision was made to change the white parts into silver accents, and make the blue a darker, navy blue so that it would stand out more. The club initially was hesitant about this, but we were able to convince them over time. To try and add glamour to sports gear is no easy task and it must be approached carefully.

INT: As off-field dress codes have become more prominent in some sports, you have been asked also to design clothes for sports media events and so on. Notably, you’ve partnered with one of the German motorsport clubs to this end. What all do you provide them with?

UB: For the motorsport teams, we provide drivers and staff with a range of clothing in their team colors, emblazoned with their logo, and ensure that this range it suitable for all off-track activities. We sought to find a way to promote German excellence in a dialogue between different areas and disciplines. For example, to provide a suit and coat for media appearances is necessary, but also, perhaps, a rain jacket for wet days at the track, or more lightweight wear for warmer days.

Seyshel Beach - Seyshel Beach Avengement Day Memorial Stadium

Super Earth's chances of qualifying for the World Cup 100 were dangling by a narrow thread, and the entire team knew it. The Senators- relegated to experimental data collection duty- would still put up an eager fight against their adversaries in hopes of proving that patriotism and faith in Lady Liberty would see them through despite the odds. After all, what were Helldivers in the end but those willing to gamble their lives on the destined hope of a better tomorrow, a tomorrow without alien tyranny and dissident terror? When facing the Cretian Territories, the Senators would do their utmost to ensure their chance at the grand prize did not fall by the wayside.

The result was an exemplary game for the team despite the unusual strategies employed. The team crowded the centreline, cutting a edge through the more standard formation of the opponent. Deadman was the centre of the assault, with Chop, Wader, Cindy and Teph all dedicated almost solely to securing him passes. Lagrange was on form the entire game, navigating the ball over the heads of the Cretians time after time and leaving them in a frantic scramble to keep up. The onslaught managed to secure Super Earth a sorely needed victory.

Denyssia

In Denyssia, the Super Earthers again attempted assault-centric tactics. The Denyssians proved more resilient, able to score one goal past Sally's defences, but the technique otherwise retained its effectiveness. The sheer determination on display by the former Helldivers was obvious to all observers, wading through painful collisions and brute-forcing their way to the goal time after time, stopped often only at the last feasible second. Of course, these opponents were effectively outcast from the competition already. It was no grand triumph compared to the likes of Super Earth's frontrunning opposition. But even so, it gave the team hope. Hope that perhaps they'd be able to see the end of this tournament after all...

Yes, THAT Super Earth. This nation is not intended to be particularly original or deep. Do not take anything it does too seriously.
