Ottilie had been hesitant to give up her role at the Ministry of Sport, but when she'd met with Émile Rougemont, he'd appealed to her desire to do some good in the world... and she had trouble saying no to her better nature. Émile had made a very convincing case that taking the role he was offering her for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be the perfect opportunity to stand up to injustice. And wasn't that exactly what she'd been doing as chief investigator for the WCC? Of course, the Ministry of Sport didn't want to let her go; Pierre and Manon had both made it clear they wanted her to go back to her old job as deputy director in Zube.

"It's your choice, of course," Manon had said, "and you have to make the decision that's best for you. But the ministry—the Ministry of Sport—would love for you to return. There would definitely be a raise waiting for you if you came back, not to mention after the work you've done, you'd be first in line for a promotion."

In the end, however, Émile's offer was too convincing. He could read Ottilie too well and knew how to appeal to her altruism. "You're certainly free to return to the Ministry of Sport after a temporary posting with Foreign Affairs," he said. "Most of our diplomats, even those on indefinite contracts, rotate every two years, and I believe that these next two years will be the peak of the current crisis in Abahamba. You have more expertise on the nation than anyone else in the Reçuecian government, and with this opportunity, you could do immeasurable good." Of course, the pay the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was offering was not bad either: if Ottilie would up living in Abahamba it would count as a "hardship posting", which would double the already significant base salary she would receive as a special consultant.

Ottilie threw herself into her training. Even with all the info she'd already learned about the political situation between Banija and Abahamba from working on the Ezera investigation, there was a lot more that she didn't know. Foreign Affairs told her that after two months of intensive training and study, she'd be ready to head to Lukasa for a diplomatic posting. But just a week or so into her training, Jean-Luc Lassalle, the minister of sport, forwarded her a letter from King Zotsara III.

Ottilie was flabbergasted. Just a few months ago, when she'd worked as a deputy director for the Ministry of Sport, just one more paper-pusher at the ocean of bureaucracy that was the WCC, she never would have imagined that her career would take this path, a path that led to the monarch of a sovereign nation inviting her to his country by name.

Foreign Affairs was thrilled. Émile gave Ottilie a quick briefing before packing her off. "This saves us the trouble of inventing a new diplomatic post for you," he said. "You've got your own invitation, courtesy of the king himself. We'll make sure you get a quick rundown on royal etiquette in Abahamba before you catch your flight."

On the plane, Ottilie found herself sitting in first class next to Jean-Luc Lassalle. The minister of sport was very affable and easy to talk to, and he seemed to know a lot about her; clearly he'd been doing his research as well. He asked her a lot of questions about the work she'd done as special investigator, since in that position she'd reported to the WCC itself and not his ministry. "Nicole was keeping me up-to-date with the great work you were doing before you took charge of the investigation," Jean-Luc said. "But I'd love to know what you got up to in Zube once you were on the WCC payoll."

Ottilie almost blushed. Nicole Meier was the ADM—assistant deputy minister—for the entire football branch of the Ministry of Sport. Ottilie had never spoken to her, but it was humbling to think that people way up the chain of command were bringing up Ottilie's name in conversations in the minster's office. She tried to put that out of her head and focus on answering the minister's question. "There was a lot of sifting through communications from Robel Ezera and comparing those to statements from his subordinates..." The conversation went on, and the pair talked about the likelihood of Ezera being forced to resign. Ottilie admitted she was trying not to think of what would happen in the wake of the investigation's report being presented. She could imagine a man so used to being in positions of power being quite angry with the young upstart investigator who had robbed him of his laurels just before his retirement. Ezera would have to deal with the WCC's punishment, while Ottilie was already off for her next job. Hopefully the Banijan wouldn't hold a personal vendetta against her, but Ottilie had to admit she didn't really know his personality.

The plane touched down in Lukasa and the disembarkation process forced those thoughts away. An armored vehicle was waiting for her and Jean-Luc at the airport: not a military vehicle, just a large, black land-cruiser-looking beast with bulletproof glass and heavy, armored door panels. The mini convoy transported the two Reçuecians directly to the royal palace, where the guards at the gate did a safety inspection on the vehicle before letting them in. Ottilie assumed the checks were routine—looking under the car with a mirror on the end of a long stick—but she felt deeply uncomfortable here where so many guards and police carried huge rifles so nonchalantly.

Inside the palace, however, the atmosphere seemed tense, but Ottilie couldn't figure out why. It seemed like the palace was almost empty: spots where ceremonial bodyguards might have normally stood were vacant, and rather than having a whole slew of household servants as Ottilie expected of a king's family trying to show off their wealth, the same man who'd driven her and Jean-Luc from the airport served as their butler and guide, showing them to their rooms and directing them where to go for their meeting with the royals after they'd freshened up. When Ottilie requested an extra hand towel, instead of a different housekeeper, the same man returned with the towel, as if the Abahambans were trying to limit how many people she was exposed to for some reason. As she and Jean-Luc headed into to the diplomatic reception hall where they were to meet the royals, she wanted to ask him if he was picking up on the same vibes she was, but they were led by the driver-cum-butler-cum-housekeeper-cum-guide into the hall so she never got a moment alone.

The reception hall was lavish and ornate. Every possible furnishing was gilded. King Zotsara was seated—Ottilie wondered if that was a real throne? or just a chair—and a few other men stood nearby: one man Ottilie recognized as the crown prince, two advisors, and a couple ceremonial guards at the back of the room. The Reçuecians presented themselves according to the Abahamban court etiquette they'd been briefed on before arriving, and Ottilie and Jean-Luc approached the king.

Ottilie was struck by his appearance. The king's skin was ashen, and there were beads of sweat on his brow. He mopped his forehead frequently with a handkerchief. Abahamba was a hot, tropical country, but here in the palace, there was good air conditioning, and Ottilie was surprised that the king would be so sweaty. Zotsara weakly lifted a hand in greeting, and he performed the action with such frailty that Ottilie decided his chair was an item of necessity for a man too weak to stand, not a throne or symbol of power.

The protocols fulfilled, it was Jean-Luc who began to speak for the Reçuecians, since as minister, he outranked Ottilie. "It is a great honor to be invited to the court of a government which, like ours, is so dedicated to the cause of sport. The Reçuecian people believe that sport is a universal right which all should have the freedom to partake in. You may have heard that to this end, the FNRF recently changed its policies to allow all genders to play on our national soccer team and in our domestic league. We also believe that nationality should not prohibit access to sport any more than any other factor, and for that reason we are proud to support your nation in your quest to participate in World Cup soccer."

King Zotsara smiled graciously, but he seemed more interested in Ottilie than in Jean-Luc. "We are glad you could visit, both you, Minister, and your compatriot, who I understand now no longer works for your Ministry of Sport, but instead your Ministry of Foreign Affairs?"

"That is correct, your Majesty," said Ottilie. "The Reçuecian government wanted me to be able to act in full capacity as a diplomat during my time here. Although of course you invited us just for one day, if it pleases your Majesty, once this mission is over, I will return to represent the Reçuecian people in your nation—and as a symbol of my nation's friendship toward yours."

The Abahambans seemed pleased with this. "Thank you for your kind words," said the crown prince. "In our letter, we mentioned that bringing us copies of your evidence against that scourge, Robel Ezera, would go a long way toward sealing that friendship..."

"Of course," said Ottilie, bowing. "I have that information right here." She produced a full copy of the report she had written for the WCC, including all of the data and records of Ezera's communication that had been attached as evidence. Holding it out, she walked toward the king to give it to him.

King Zotsara reached out to take the report from her, but as he did, he broke out into a fit of coughing. He was overcome for a moment, hacking drily. He pulled back his hand to cover his mouth, but it was too late—Ottilie had to stand there awkwardly as she waited for him to recover, and she could feel a little big of his spittle land on the back of her wrist. The court etiquette classes hadn't covered this situation, and she hesitated to wipe it off in case she would offend the king.

After a moment the crown prince stepped forward instead and took the report from her. Then he returned to his father's side and put a hand on his back. "Allow me to thank you on the king's behalf, Madame Thorvex," he said. Zotsara was still trying to recover his breath, so the crown prince went on. "We'd planned to take both of you to our golf course and discuss the next steps for our nations' relationship there. But as you can see, my father has been feeling under the weather this morning, so we've unfortunately had to cancel that. We regret we won't have as much time today as we'd hoped. However, since you, Madame Thorvex, are going to be Reçueçn's long-term representative to Abahamba, you're welcome to extend your visit indefinitely, and we can have our summit later."

The Reçuecians accepted this arrangement. After a banquet for lunch attended by Ottilie, Jean-Luc, Crown Prince Thuku, and only one or two other dignitaries, Jean-Luc was driven back to the airport. Ottilie was told she could continue to stay in the palace as a guest for the time being.

Ottilie walked through the various wings of the complex that evening, exploring as much of the palace as she was permitted to. The compound's ostentatiousness was astounding, especially for a nation that Ottilie knew was so poor. But intermingled with the aura of wealth and power that pervaded the grounds, Ottilie had another nagging sensation in the back of her mind—the palace still felt to her like a ghost town: empty and haunted. When she started to get chills, despite walking through a warm tropical courtyard, Ottilie figured her nerves were getting to her and went to bed early.

For a week, Ottilie waited in the palace, inquiring each day whether the king was feeling better. Yet it seemed that whatever he'd come down with was a bit worse than being merely "under the weather": each day she was told to come back tomorrow. Worse, Ottilie began to feel ill as well; she acquired a fever that wouldn't go away, and started to think maybe she'd caught a bug from the King the first day she'd met him. She began to feel worse and worse, and soon was confined to her room.

The Abahamban doctor who came to visit her—he introduced himself as Dr. Ozzie—was frustratingly taciturn. He refused to speculate as to what kind of virus Ottilie might have.

"I think I should go to the hospital," Ottilie told him.

"No!" The doctor's response was so abrupt that he frightened Ottilie. "That is, I'm sorry... but no one is allowed to leave the palace right now."

A sudden fear gripped Ottilie. "Excuse me? Why is that?"

"That is to say, his Majesty maintains me here to provide the best medical care in the country for those at the palace, and moving to the hospital in your current state would only be an inconvenience to you." Dr. Ozzie quickly excused himself, leaving Ottilie alone in her room. Her fever returned, and soon she had convinced herself that she'd imagined the entire conversation in her delirium.

A few days later, Ottilie sat up with a start, entirely lucid. She looked about her. Her bedsheets were sweaty, twisted from her feverous struggling. No one was in the room with her. She caught a glance of herself in the mirror, and she looked deathly pale. Her hair was unkempt and her eyes were bloodshot. This is not just a fever, she thought. This is serious. She grabbed her phone and made a call home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before her fever could return.

Ottilie didn't remember returning home. A pair of Reçuecian diplomats, accompanied by a platoon of soldiers, had apparently come to retrieve her, and when they'd seen her condition, had demanded permission to evacuate her to the airport via helicopter. Within hours, Ottilie was medevac'd to a hospital in Reçueçn City, and by the end of the day, the doctors there had identified her illness as a case of Ebola. She and the extraction team were put in quarantine.

Two days later, under the care of the Reçuecian care team at the hospital, Ottilie finally woke up again. Upon being informed that she'd contracted Ebola, she made a call to Émile Rougemont. "There's going to be an Ebola outbreak in Abahamba," she said. "This isn't public information, but I'm sure it's even spread to the royal family. We need to put together a humanitarian assistance package immediately."

Libertad Sportswear releases Esportiva-themed kit for Agilang Dilaw
Kit to be worn in visit to TJUN-ia

NUEVO SAN MARCO - As part of Libertad Sportswear's sendoff of the National team to face TJUN-ia at Beregozera Stadium, the official outfitters of the Agilang Dilaw has released the kits the team to be worn in the match, with a nod to their home region, Esportiva.

The kit features an orange shirt with elements from the regional flag of Esportiva, black shorts, and black socks with orange trim. The team plans to use these kits in select international matches against Esportivan opposition, similar to what Hapilopper is doing with their Esportiva themed kits.

The Libertad CEO has also announced intentions to create regional themed kits for Rushmore, Anaia, Arrosia, and an Independents-themed kit for nations not in the four major sporting regions. When asked on whether an Atlantian Oceania themed kit is in the pipeline, he said "Not in the pipeline".

The Agilang Dilaw will face the Jags in a crucial six pointer that has grave implications to both nations' fate in their ongoing quest to qualify for World Cup 100 Finals.

PART 6 / Five Aphrilian Fillies You Probably Should Know About (Educational, Informal)

For a long time in the history of horse racing, the colts often got the spotlight and attention from the media. And perhaps you could argue that it has been the case for a majority of other sports and their own history as well. It's the boys and/or the men that the world tend to keep their eyes on, unless the women/girls do or have something that makes them stand out from the crowd and are easily recognizable even among a sea of talented superstars. But when it comes to horse racing here in Aphrilia, the late twentieth century and early twenty first saw fillies become stronger and more competent, able to challenge the colts. And this careful nurturing of the strength of Aphrilian horses in general culminated in a horse that not only made history in the world of Eluwa, but also became one of the best that ever ran. And she is in the list for this part of the Racing For Rookies series, where I talk about the horses themselves. Emma Rhodes here, as last time I talked about five colts, now let's get to five fillies you need to know of. Because these horses also pack quite the reputation and fame.

HER BRILLIANCE (Starlight Dream (SGN) x Joustheart (Red Canopy))
RECORD: 12:9-3-0, 7 Grade I Wins including the 2020 Triple Crown (Undefeated)

When I said that a horse made history, I meant it. For the vast majority of fillies, their classic route usually involves the Triple Tiara races which in Aphrilia consist of the 12K Guirnseas, Indianapolis Oaks, and the Lady Covenant Stakes. And for the colts, of course, the Triple Crown races consisting of the 24K Guirnseas, Indianapolis Derby, and the St Arthur Stakes are there for them to take. Colts are not allowed to enter the filly only races, and while fillies have won some of the colt classics here and there, these unique winners are few and far in between. However, Her Brilliance defies any sort of logic anyone has. Her owners saw her potential and strength, being able to blaze forward with ridiculous speeds. She is the first racehorse in all of Eluwa to win specifically the Triple Crown as a filly, and Aphrilia's second ever undefeated Triple Crown winner. And while she suffered three second places in a row after the Triple Crown in the Aphrilia International, National Mile Championship, and the Aphrilia Memorial, she would rebound in her four year old season to win four more Grade I races with that boom-or-bust method that swept the three jewels before retiring with style. Truly a brilliant horse, truly a genius.

RED STAR BELLROSE (Red World Rebirth x Rose Hopeful (Rosemary Thyne))
RECORD: 3:3-0-0, 1 Grade I Win including the 2007 12K Guirnseas

In sports, there is no such thing as absolutes. This is also true when it comes to racing horses, as you can never guess what happens in every race. The favorite isn't always going to win, the race will not always play out the way you expected, and sometimes you just can't tell what could have happened. There's always "what ifs" when it comes to racing in general, and Red Star Bellrose is one of those big what ifs in Aphrilian horse racing. In the span of just three races, she won her races by a combined total of twenty lengths. Eight in her maiden, five in the Grade III Matriarch Stakes (A recognized trial for the 12K Guirnseas), and seven in the Guirnseas itself, to beat out future multiple Grade I winner Frozen Heart and deny her the Triple Tiara. Many people say Bellrose would have won it that year, however, she was forced into early retirement due to injury after the Guirnseas. Her full potential was never realized, and her career is one people still discuss with fervent interest, as those in the know will forever wonder just how strong Red Star Bellrose could have been if not for her bad luck.

ROUNDSHOT (Buckshot Pass x Gentle Lady (Mirror Effect))
RECORD: 25:16-4-2, 8 Unofficial Grade I Wins

Regarded as one of the strongest sprinters of all time, Roundshot's record is somewhat deceiving. It took her three races to break her maiden which was at 1400m. Before becoming a renowned sprinter, she was tested at a mile with her Grade I debut at the 12K Guirnseas (Having a guaranteed spot after finishing third in a trial race). But she wasn't bred for it and a suboptimal running style caused her to finish 13th. By this point, she was 5:1-0-1, and it was decided she would be a sprinter with mile races later on in her career. It took two tries before she won a graded sprint race, and then all hell broke loose when Roundshot conquered the Lysenne Sprint, which by that point her record was 8:3-0-1. After this, Rounshot would go on a rage with a seven race winning streak which included the Maccarine Sprinters Stakes, the Lysenne Sprint in her senior year, and the Darlingtown Autumn Dash for her to go 15:10-0-1 with four Grade I wins. Four placings in subsequent graded races against previous rivals and due to her main jockey being out of commission made her go 19:10-4-2, but she would rebound to win six races including four more Grade I races (And finally adding a mile GI to her collection), retiring after winning the Darlingtown Autumn Dash once more and setting two records: Recorded top speed and race record on the same day to go out with 25:16-4-2 and etch her name as one of the fastest and strongest sprinters of all time.

LADY MONICA (Open Verses x Lady Montana (Legend Maker))
RECORD: 18:4-5-3

Some horses are known for their capability, others are known for their character, and some are known for their achievements. However, not every horse is known for their beauty, but Lady Monica is one of them and is regarded as one of the first to be recognized primarily for their appearance. A local racer in the 40s, she was described to have a chestnut coat with great body conformation, thanks in large to her sire Open Verses. Her owner at the time, Michelle Laurens, made sure that Lady Monica was taken great care of. Her mane and tail were properly trimmed and it was made sure that she looked as perfect as possible. Her popularity skyrocketed when she won a decently heavy prize local race on her seventh race, with people saying that she had charmed those who watched her by appearance alone. Lady Monica was so beautiful in fact, that she ended up being featured on several magazines and was a guest star appearance in several hit movies at the time. On her retirement race, twenty five thousand people came and visited the old Brookway Racecourse as they struggled to accommodate the many new visitors. Lady Monica would end up winning her eighteenth and last race, putting a high note on the end of her unique stand-out career.

ENCHANTEE ELYSIA (Enchanted x Elysian Realm (ATL) (Dimensionnel (ATL)))
RECORD: 12:4-4-1, 2 Grade I Wins including the 2004 National Mile Championship & 2004 Aphrilia Memorial

Certain wins are often far more significant than others, and that tends to depend on the circumstances of the race itself. The circumstances when Enchantee Elysia won was nothing more than "batshit insane". In her junior year, she won once and placed once in three races, with the placing coming in the Fillies Starlight Stakes. Her greatest nemesis was Beginner Guide in the Triple Tiara races. Having qualified for the 12K Guirnseas after winning a GIII race to get in by prize money, Enchantee Elysia proceeded to finish second in all the Tiara races to Beginner Guide, who constantly proved to be insurmountable. An unplaced run in a GII served as her trial for the Aphrilia International, facing off against Beginner Guide and 2003 Triple Crown winner Aerial Ace along with international competition. The extremely fast pace compared to usual favored Aerial Ace as Enchantee Elysia finished 9th. She would finally grab her first Grade I win in the National Mile Championship, and finished second in a long distance Grade II race as prep for the Aphrilia Memorial where Aerial Ace and Beginner Guide waited once more. When the media dubbed this "The Clash of Crowns," Enchantee Elysia shocked everyone by defeating both to claim her second Grade I race by forgoing her usual pacing style to run at front. This victory of hers granted Enchantee Elysia the moniker of "The Crownslayer" by fans of the sport. And while she ended up being forced into early retirement due to developing lameness after the Memorial and proceeding to have injuries that destroyed her chance of recovery, she's forever remembered as one of the few horses to defeat a Triple Crown and Tiara winner in the same race, to end her somewhat shorter career with the greatest honor possible.

MOMENTUM

Facing a side they dropped points to the Auprussians were prepared for this encounter with Khachen. With Alaide Mitregasque still out, Fortunan Rodric finishes an incisive pass performed by Rogeur Pagault in the 8th minute and at that moment it looked to be another easy victory. However the Khachens managed to pull one back in the 19th minute through a free kick leaving Eleo Vicard incensed. At 1-1 the Auprussians were going to drop more points to the same team but after half time the Auprussians found another gear. Huberdeau Audac scored off of an incredible run that started at midfield devastating the Khachen defense. Huberdeau then scored again in the 74th minute thanks to a great sequence starting from Rodulf Siebault with the assist going to Rogeur Pagault again. This finally made Auprussia top of the group based on their Head-to-head record with Biyambi (who they defeated 4-1 previously).

The momentum continued into the match against Boring Paradise but this time Auprussia conceded first. The Boring Paradise players had a great team goal that sliced through the defense in the 24th minute. After that goal though the Auprussians took over possession at the game. Before the half was over returning Alaide Mitregasque pulled the match level when he shot from long range all the way to the top left corner of the goal. Mitregasque then scored his brace in the 62nd minute from a looping cross by Martin Di Portefenisa. Mitregasque headed it home and the Auprussians never looked back. The Auprussian defense stepped up immensely stonewalling Boring Paradise's players from completing their attacks. This still left Auprussia at the top of the group via head-to-head instead of having any cushion to work with.

Eleo Vicard voiced that the next 2 matches were extremely important.

Away to Biyambi could provide the cushion necessary to see Auprussia out of qualifying. The last time the two teams met the Auprussians dominated the proceedings in all facets of the match. This time it will be in Biyambi's home though and it stands to reason it could be a much harder encounter as a result. For that match the regular Starting XI were kept in tact other than Coraine Du Peniveaux rotating out for Samuel Lithobert at the present. Vicard's explanation is that Lithobert's methodical style of play exploits Biyambi best overall. Rumors also abound that both Du Peniveaux and Lithobert are extremely competitive with each other and this time Samuel won out. Vicard allegedly still has some hatred left for the Biyambians but he chose not to comment on the rumors.

The biggest match of this stretch was Eastfield Lodge at home. This is the team that handed Auprussia their only loss on the campaign and a win here would devastate Eastfield Lodge's chances at qualification which Vicard relished. "It was embarrassing the last time we played against them. I want that day to be a day they remember". The defense has improved significantly since then and could be the difference in this encounter since the last time the two met the defense had the constitution of swiss cheese. Rodulf Siebault and Ingalcer Pardau also gave the Eastfielders pause at the beginning as well. In terms of starters Coraine Du Peniveaux will start this match as Vicard perceives her versatility as more dangerous to the Eastfielders but Lithobert will be on standby in case.

Vicard responded "It is very much a huge deal to me. Especially on the defensive front, if we can continue to have great performances like we had against Boring Paradise there's no limit to what we can accomplish"

"Do you think Eastfield Lodge and Biyambi could prove more troublesome as back-to-back matches"

"Any team is troublesome when they are of the quality of both Biyambi and Eastfield Lodge. Personally I would want to run ragged through them to put all the questions to bed, but that's not how this sport works much to my disdain"

"Coraine and Samuel have had their high and low points throughout qualifying, is that why you have them heavily rotating with each other?"

"Well that and they are competitive. Just the other day they had a contest to see who can pull off their techniques the best. Lithobert barely won and Coraine wasn't the happiest after. That's what I want to see, competition and intensity as I feel we need that to qualify."

After answering the media's questions Veraine deu Merla gave Vicard a call. "Hey that little problem we had with our anonymous sources?" "Yeah?" Vicard thought Veraine was going to just bury it and not speak about it again.

"Found out a couple of staffers spoke to some disgruntled players after Pierre left. Of course they didn't name names but I made sure they understood that if they do it again it's their livelihoods on the line"

Vicard made an inquisitive face but he knew he couldn't ask him for player names, especially not now that they have been playing well. So he mildly responded: "Okay, at least we put that out before it got any bigger."

"By the way, anything like this happens again you have my number. Do not hesitate to give me a ring. I don't want us to get in our own way here okay?"

Vicard smirked to himself and merely said "Yes sir".

Bhumi Matawis Empire - The Religious Movement

Following the death of King Puroboyo and the enactment of mourning year, the election schedule was pushed to 2005. The new date was scheduled on 13 July 2005. Leading to the election date, some things happened. Party coalition became a hot topic after Aliansi Nasional Coalition was given the mandate to establish a government despite their biggest party not winning the election. Meetings were held by religious parties notably Masyuma and Partai Jamangen, the two largest religious parties in the Empire. By the end of 2004, both parties declared The Religious Movement, their coalition name. In a few months ahead, other small religious parties decided to join the coalition such as Partai Kristen Matawis, Komunitas Kristen Bakkara and Partido Democrata Cristão de Galiyao. This coalition is quite unique because all kinds of religions fused together, breaking their differences to be in this coalition. 3 main religions become the backbone of this coalition, Jamangen (a syncretized religion worship by most of Jamanese people), Muslim and Christian.

Another coalition that almost became permanent was the current government parties coalition. Led by PSKM and Partai Demokrasi Matawis (PDM), both parties were historically one party. But leading to the end of their term, PDM tried to gain popularity and overtake PSKM leadership in the government coalition. This move hurts their relationship. And the breaking of the government coalition was taken into advantage by their rival. Aliansi Nasional Coalition and The Religious Movement were ready to win the election. While Partai Rakyat Matawis slowly broke up as their east branches decided to establish their own party. The decision was made to bring more focus on changing the party image which had been marked negatively in the eastern part of the Empire because of the Third Empire era impact.

The 2005 general election was held peacefully. The turnout was high. Part of it was because voting is made compulsory. Foreign media and observers closely monitored the process of the election. Some of them stated that the election was mostly fair and democratically held. They mentioned vote buying practice which still applied directly or indirectly, but it’s not affected the result significantly. And after two months of intense counting and calculation, The Religious Movement won the election with a small margin against Aliansi Nasional Coalition. PSKM and PDM lost many votes. Political experts said that despite the government being successful in maintaining the stability of the Empire’s economy and security, they were accused as unnationalist. The reason was their rapid privatization of state-owned companies. Some critics even said that the government has sold the country to private sectors, especially foreign private ones.

Muhammad Hamid Hamzah

The leader of The Religious Movement, Muhammad Hamid Hamzah who is the leader of Masyuma was then given the mandate to establish a cabinet. During their term, the Empire faced an increase in economy. Surplus in export was achieved following the rise in commodity prices such as palm oil, coal and copper. The stock exchange also reached its new highest value and the currency exchange strengthened. However, economy experts warn about the hot money rush that fills the Empire’s stock exchange. Most of them were foreign investors. Which makes the economist worry that this money might be taken back if something happens in their country. And that's what happened in 2008. A crisis happening outside the Empire which affected the global trade value. The export surplus was shrinking. And as expected, the stock market was losing investors. It loses almost 20% of its value in one day that the authorities have to close the trade. Fortunately, this situation didn’t affect the Empire too long. This is because the Empire’s economy relies on domestic trade more than export-import. The situation in the stock exchange gradually stabilized. And entering 2009, the economy was stable despite the growth shrinking from 6.4% to 5.1% per annum.

Situation at voting center during 2010 election

Despite the setback, The Religious Movement won the 2010 election. The second place was taken by Matawis Socialist Democratic Alliance (MSDA), a new political coalition led by PSKM and PDM. Matawis People’s Union (led by PRM) finished third and Aliansi Nasional Coalition fourth. Muhammad Hamid Hamzah started his second term as Mahapatih Anom with a controversial energy policy. As the Empire’s oil production plummeted while the demand continued to increase, the government decided to convert some of the energy used by the citizens from oil to natural gas. This decision was made because the Empire’s gas production has been on an increase in the past 5 years. The change met with pros and cons. The pros believe that the energy conversion would decrease the country’s demand on crude oil which also affected their import value and could balance the deficit in energy trade. While the cons stated that the change was poorly prepared and could create confusion amongst the population. And the cons statement turned out to be true. A long line of people waiting on kerosene for their daily needs can be seen anywhere in the Empire as changing from kerosene based stove to gas stove has not reached all households. On the other hand, the government had reduced the production of kerosene which made it scarce in the domestic market. The government image was further tarnished following the enactment of pornography law which was viewed as biased in many of its articles and the corruption scandal where some small banks were given bailout by the government even though their possible bankruptcy won’t systematically affect the Empire banking system. At the end of his second term, Hamid Hamzah's popularity dropped from 75% to 48%.

Yono Mulyawanto

The situation in the second term of Hamid Hamzah affected the performance of The Religious Movement in the 2015 election. People seems to avoid to vote for religious-based political party. They seems to upset with the fact that even though they are a religious party but they are still involved in corruption scandal. The coalition lost a significant amount of voters and dropped to 4th place. The winner of the election was the Matawis Socialist Democratic Alliance (MSDA). Their leader, Yono Mulyawanto was sweared as the new Mahapatih Anom. On the other hand, the percentage of blank and invalid votes increase quite significantly in the election. Amounted almost 15% of the total votes or almost double from the previous election. While the turnout drop to 70%, the lowest turnout in the Empire's election history.

“So, you write or somethin’?”

“Mmh.”

Mia twiddled her fork around her spaghetti aimlessly, looking down on it as if it was the most interesting thing in the restaurant. She looked up to her “date” who was busy munching on his own plate of pasta as if she wasn’t there. She held in the urge to roll her eyes, although the temptation of upping and leaving was slowly starting to creep in.

What a bore this guy was. Mia didn’t think dates would be boring, but the only thing she did with this lion was talk about work, aspirations and other boring things. She tried to warm up to him, but his cold personality extinguished whatever passion she had in her heart. She just didn’t understand: what was he planning on doing for this date? Waste her time? Well, he didn’t even seem like he wanted to be there.

Her friend. Mia’s friend was the string connecting the two at the dinner table. She had told Mia about her friend – the date – looking for someone, and it didn’t take long for Mia to agree on a blind date. If she had known that it would turn out this awry, she’d probably choose to remain blind.

The date ended pretty unspectacularly, continuing the trend of uninspiring dates Mia had gone out with. As she walked home, she racked her brains on her seemingly endless run of failed dates. What could she have done better this time? Should she have been warmer to melt the ice between the two of them? Or maybe she should have talked more? But it wasn’t like he was going to reciprocate anyway. Ugh, it was all so frustrating. Mia couldn’t believe that he really had the personality of cardboard. She just refused to believe it. Did he just mentally check out because he sensed that she wasn’t the one? It had to be. Mia didn’t want to think otherwise. It just didn’t seem possible at all that someone was this drab to be around. He felt like a character an amateur writer would write as shy, or mysterious, but in actuality he was anything but.

Mia just wanted someone to ignite the essence of love in her heart. Was there really no one other than Félicien who could do that?

Upon reaching her apartment, Mia immediately took to the shower, and then had herself an actually satisfying supper. A few minutes in the kitchen, and she cooked up a sandwich much more impressive than whatever that squid ink pasta was.

Setting her plate down on the dining table, Mia slowly chewed on her sandwich while looking through her phone. Her social media feed was pretty run-of-the-mill: food pictures, friends hanging out, people going out on dates, Félicien and Blanchefleur–

Wait, what?

Mia swiped back. Félicien posted a story. Him, Blanchefleur, holding paws by the sea. Standard couple things, pretty cliche if you asked Mia. There was nothing outstanding about the post, really, and Mia was nagging at herself to move on…

…until she saw where exactly they were.

The deja vu hit Mia like a truck. The rock wall the two were sitting on, that bar along the pier, the positioning of the lampposts… Why did they seem so familiar? Mia had never been to the seaside in ages, so what was her brain pointing at? Did she ever go on a beach date with her college friends? High school friends? Félicien?

Oh. Then it clicked.

Of course it was him. Those memories crashed onto the shores in Mia’s mind. She remembered everything.

It was one of her and Félicien’s last outings as friends. They went out to the beach because Félicien said he had a great spot, and it truly was. Watching the sun set under the horizon and the moonlight glisten on the seawater was far more romantic than anything Mia had written. That night was a particularly cold one, and as the two were snacking on their onigiris, Mia felt the pang of coldness pierce her skin and she started to shudder. It might have been a bad idea to wear nothing but a tank top and shorts, but at the same time she thought Félicien would want to go to the actual beach instead of the pier by the beach.

“You cold?” Félicien asked, but he didn’t need to. Her body was trembling under the sub-15 weather. Félicien could definitely tell. He took off his jacket and draped it over Mia’s shoulders.

“Better?” he asked. With the jacket shielding her body, Mia definitely felt more comfortable, but it was also Félicien’s warm tone that heated her up. She looked over at him. Now, he was the one to suffer. Cladded in a skintight t-shirt and a simple pair of jeans, it wouldn’t take him long to feel the brunt of the weather.

So why did he give her his sweater?

The two continued to enjoy the beach view. The nighttime vibes were immaculate. People were having fun on the beach, and children were frolicking on the beach under the full moon without a care in the world. It felt like the world had come to a stop just to enjoy the Friday night. As the two continued their conversation, Mia could hear Félicien’s teeth start to chatter. As they talked, he could constantly rub his hands and blow into them, as if it would remedy the cold. As Mia watched him wrestle the coldness, she started to feel guilty about his jacket.

“You can have the jacket,” Mia said as she took it off her shoulders, “You definitely need it.” Félicien gently nudged her paw away, however, and beckoned at her to put it back on.

“You need it more than I do, Mia,” he replied, “Not to mention, you look good in it.”

The radiant smile on his face did enough to convince her to keep the jacket, and she could feel all her blood rush to her cheeks. What did he mean by saying she looked better in it? Suddenly, Mia’s face felt warm enough she didn’t need the damn jacket anymore.

Yeah, what did he mean by that?

Three, four years on, and Mia was still kept in the dark. She remembered how quickly her heart thumped when he gave her the jacket, and when he said that. Her heart had never beat so fast, and until now she was still looking for someone who would bring her back to that high. Truly, why did Félicien say that? Why did he give her all this false hope that her love might be requited, only to give his heart away to someone else not even a week later?

Mia rested her head on the dining table as she scrolled through her gallery. She guessed she would never find out Félicien’s true intentions. Maybe he was just being friendly. Maybe he was just telling her a white lie to make her keep the jacket on, but still. Why suffer through the pain? He didn’t need to be valiant or anything. She was a tough lioness. She could take the cold head-on.

Mia finally found the picture of her and Félicien at the pier. Sure enough, it was the same spot as that story of him and Blanchefleur. How many people did he recommend that spot to? For a long while Mia thought she was special, but now her feelings of being a sidepiece felt even stronger. Looking at the picture, she started to reminisce about the good days: of her and Félicien just hanging out for fun, exploring new places in Vixette, having deep talks with one another. It was just teenage platonic friendships, really, but now, thinking about it, it was such a nostalgic time.

Mia sighed as she took another bite of her sandwich.

“Félicien…” she muttered, “Why… not me?” She let out a sharp exhale, and closed her phone. She sat straight up on her chair for a while as she continued to go down memory lane. All of the times she spent together with him, all of her secrets she spilled, all of the places… they were all meaningless now, but a moment foregone. In a way, Mia felt like she had brought upon it for herself. If she hadn’t confessed to him, would their relationship still hold strong? Would they continue to be together? Would he come to love her back?

So many questions, so few answers. Mia wished she had a genie she could ask all he–

Suddenly, Mia felt something in her throat. Shit, did she swallow down the wrong hole? Crap, this was bad. Mia started to panic. The violent coughs came back, but this time because she had eaten a sandwich the wrong way. She dashed to the toilet and leaned against the sink. The self-Heimlich manoeuvre. Fuck, a boyfriend would be so helpful right now. Putting a fist against her stomach, she pushed it up into her torso to try to get the sandwich out. It took a few punts to get it unstuck in her windpipe, and when it dislodged, she began to cough uncontrollably into the sink.

As she coughed, she could feel the “sandwich” edge closer to her mouth, but then she realised that it didn’t really feel like a sandwich. It took a few more minutes to cough it out, and on the sink lay a flower petal.

Due to a lack of a publicly availble squad list, Moladean journalists have been unable to compile a list of goalscorers for Bears Armed.

Moladea's national football team has finally picked up a long awaited third win of the World Cup qualifying, in what proved to be one of the highest scoring games in total. Sixteen total goals were scored, including eleven by seven different Moladean players, in what works out as greater than one goal every six minutes.

Thomas Handsworth proved to be the star of the show, with four goals and one assist before being substituted off for Matilda Reece in the 81st minute, who then went on to score a goal for herself to put Moladea into the double-figures heading into injury time.

Devon Shilton then rounded off the game at 11-5 with what proved to be the last kick of the game, as the referee opted against adding any injury time onto the second half, opting instead to put the visitors out of their misery.

Unfortunately for the Black and Whites, their qualifying run has already de facto come to a close, with Moladea finding themselves fourteen points adrift of the top two, with just five games remaining. This fact was the primary reason for the stadium only being filled to two-thirds of capacity in Cardigan, alongside the poor run of results that likely deflated the Moladean fans.

Ellzidan was both a bit frustrated as well as a bit relieved at the end of the only match for the Marauders during this international window, with the team having had their second bye during this window. From here on out it was two games every break, two games that would require that the players continue to put their best foot forward and play up to the level that they knew they were capable of, that the coaches coached them up to play at, and what the fans irrationally demanded at every outing. The first half of the campaign had been absolutely flawless record wise, they had won every single game from the word go, yet the Drawkian had seen moments in play and even large swathes of time where the team simply was not as locked into the matches as they needed to be. Still she knew the value of bleeding in some of the reserve talent, especially with the pool having seen such a shake up and she needed to get a better gauge of where players stood, so she had rotated in the home match against Calgasia, a team who was battling for that second place and playoff spot in the group.

It had been a fairly good game all things considered but the team failed to hold on to a clean sheet and they had dropped two points in a draw that left the home fans feeling a bit restless and looking over the shoulder and what was now only a five point gap between the Marauders and the rest of the group. While the fans might have been getting a bit panicked about the situation in the table, Ellzidan and the rest of the staff were feeling just fine, knowing they had just played the most difficult game remaining on the schedule and come out of it with valuable experience. The bench players were good enough to hold serve but lacked a certain amount of finesse or flair about them to really have taken the game to the opposition, to have taken the most advantage of the opportunities that had come their way. Eighteen shots with five on target and only one goal to show for it with over fifty-five percent possession was a sign of a team that had all of the pieces in place to have put forward a dominant victory but perhaps lacked the cutting edge class needed to do it on a consistent basis.

That was fine though, being held to a home draw against one of the only other two teams in the group who were seriously challenging for the spots for the Finals was a teaching moment, it would give her the ability to get on to the team next month when they gathered for the next set of games. Traveling to Orioni and then hosting New Zhengguo was not going to have been the stiffest tests at any rate, both teams coming into the break at sub rank 200 and two of the bottom three teams in the table with only three wins from twenty-two combined games. It was exactly the sort of window as an international manager where you would expect to see some complacency and a lack of focus from your team as they likely thought it was a sure fire six points or at least four at the minimum. That was the expectation for the window to be sure, yet she needed the players focused and rearing to go, not sitting back on their laurels after having won the opening nine games. This draw, especially coming at home, was going to give her and the staff plenty to talk about and get on to the team about so that their focus was high and energy top notch for the window.

If the team continued to play as well as they did in the first half of the campaign, the elf was fairly certain that the team would be clenching their spot in the Finals in the penultimate window, provided Calgasia did not take the draw against the Marauders and turn it into a great run of form that would keep them neck and neck with her squad through the final stretch. The boon of early clenching was of course experimentation but that was happening now in the second half regardless, as it seemed as certain as it could at this time that the team was going to be qualifying for a trip to Rushmore and a chance once again to chase the sixth World Cup title. As ever, she needed to know which of the depth players she would be able to trust in a high pressure moment where if they were coming off the bench they could hold on to a lead or chase the goal that the team would require. While the starting eleven was as good as anyone in the sport, depth was as an important piece as ever, especially with the added knockout round in the new format of the Finals. She needed key pieces to perform crucial tasks in those high pressure moments and with as much turnover as the pool had had during the break between cycles, she was not sure who she could trust right now. These remaining six games were going to be an excellent time to find out which players were ready for the spotlight and which still had work to do.

Early morning, slightly past midnight on Matchday 11 did the Dragons’ arrive on Juven soil for their rematch against the team. The memory of their previous match against Juvencus is still fresh as if it had taken place yesterday — a major defeat, however one that still showcased the Dragons’ resilience and strength to weather through the victory drought during the early matches of the World Cup.

Even though they were walking into Juvencus with a better standing than they did when they played against the team last time, the differences in strength and experience was still prevalent. A high ranked and highly experienced team, Juvencus posed as the same formidable opponent for the new budding team as they did last time. But only this time, they were much more able to defend against..whatever they would pull.

It was 1:00am when the Dragons arrived in Juvencus. The country was a lot more different than Yangchenia, the streets more empty during night hours. The city of Aguaju sported a more modern look, with the match scheduled to take place there, in Stadio Electrico, or the Electric Stadium.

Deja Vu, Deju Vencus?

The moment finally arrived. Minutes remained before Matchday 11 would begin for the Blazing Dragons. A rematch against Juvencus, the Blazing Dragons are determined to do their best to turn their previous loss into steam for another win. But now, as the away team, they didnt have the home team advantage like they sported last time they fought the Juven team.

With four back to back wins prior to this match the Blazing Dragons are certainly on much more stable ground than they stood on when they last faced the Juvencanos. However, the challenge remains — to defeat the ranked 24 team, and dramatically improve Yangchenia’s standing on the group bracket. And maybe, just maybe, be able to avoid falling towards the Cup of Harmony.

The clocked ticked ever closer to matchtime. The stadium was packed with both Juven and Yangini fans, with notable attendees being Princess of Yangchenia Sirivani Iliani Sihamoni, former coach of the Blazing Dragons Zhen Hoezhi, along with several members of the Yangini Sporting Commission, including minister of sports Tsenden Tobshing.

As matchtime finally arrived, the Dragons began piling onto the field, the forwards first, followed by the midfield, then the rear, with Damdul Gyatso coming out last. The Juvenites do the same, and soon ,both teams were in position.

The whistle was blown. Chaos embroils the field during the first few minutes of the match. The Juvens were swift and efficient, however the Dragons’ agility and unpredictability made it challenging for them to gain possession of the ball. Masses of players from both sides clash in midfield, neither able to capture the ball for longer than three seconds. The Yangini strategy was working well, delaying any progress by the enemy all the way through the 10th and 20th minutes. Then, a Yangini breakthrough, Wu Hsaing dashing towards the goal. It looked like as if he was to score — but then at the last second, the ball was recaptured by the Juvenite team. This time, it was the Juvenites’ turn to go on offense. All eyes were on Giuseppe Conte, who held the ball, and therefore, the game. In front of him lay heavy Yangini defenses, the Dragons prepared to block his advance before he even makes it near the goal. As Conte begins moving, the Dragons stall his advance, with Yesui Erkhet almost stealing the ball back from his possession. By the 40th minute, the game was stuck in a stalemate, the Juvenites having the ball, but being unable to make any progress. The Yangini lines were formidable, and as the game moved into halftime, the score was 0-0.

They had managed to hold off the Juvenites. But this was not over. They couldnt let their guard down at this moment. Post halftime would decide the fate of this game, whether it will end with a Yangini victory, a Juvenite victory, or a draw.

And as halftime ended, the game was back on — the ball in the hands of the Juvenites. Giuseppe Conte continued his advance towards the Yangini goal unyielding, and finally, after several minutes of a back and forth, he arrives in front of the goal by the 56th minute. His first shot was a miss, bouncing off the left goalpost. He attempts a second shot, but was blocked by Damdul Gyatso, returning the ball to Yangini possession. Alessia Xade attempted to turn the tide against the Juvenites, passing the ball to Tubek Orlov, then to Sasha Saizi. However, the Juvenites retook the ball from Saizi on the 64th minute, allowing Giuseppe Conte to attempt another shot. First shot? Blocked. The second was a miss. Then finally, on Giuseppe’s third shot, came a goal — the first goal for the match, putting Juvencus at a one point lead by the 71st minute.

The Juvenites took advantage of this momentum to once again make an attempt at the goal, this time by Ceferino Audiol. After two attempts, he also manages to score a goal shortly after Conte at the 76th minute, widening Juvencus’s lead by two points. But by this point, the Dragons had regrouped, fortifying their defense of the goal, preventing another Juvenite attack. Now, they knew they had to go on offense. With 14 minutes remaining in the game victory was certainly still possible, and with players like Hsaing, Thaye and Erkhet in the team, it is definitely doable. And as the 80th minute rolled around it was Wu Hsaing that made an attempt at the Juvenite goal, however all his attempts were blocked by the Juvenite goalkeeper, Juan Carlos Ungaro. Yesui Erkhet also made similar attempts on the 84th and 86th minutes respectively, however all failing to bear any fruit. And before Tsamchoe Thaye could make his own attempt, the final whistle was blown, ending the game 0-2, cementing a Juvenite victory.

The team’s loss to Juvencus reminded them that there are still many teams they have yet to possess the strength to beat. A shrimp among whales, the Dragons were still fighting an uphill battle, one that they had done well adapting themselves to. Their next match was a rematch against another team the Dragons had previously lost to - Sernet. The Sernetians, despite their lower rank, have proven themselves to be similar to the Dragons in strength and will to carry on, defeating many of the giant players as well even though their rank was the lowest out of any ranked nation in the bracket.

The Dragons were the home team this match, and they hoped that it would give them an advantage against Sernet. Many had joked that the Dragons’ greatest advantage lay in the Yangini climate, cold and brutal for those that have yet to brave its worst. And November in Lhamo was certainly already cold as hell, the Msalkan continent already a frozen wasteland by the dawn of the ber months.

Stellar Surprises - Snow Slows Squads

The snow in Lhamo the night of the matchday was heavy, burying much of the city in a thick layer of frost. A massive snowstorm was in the process of blowing in from the northern tundra, and the city of Raijugang to its north had already reported massive snowfall clogging streets and burying cars. Neither the Dragons nor the Sernetians have landed in Lhamo Airport, the runway so utterly snowed over it had to be manually cleared before aircraft were permitted to land. Even still, the snow was so heavy it was still a risk, both planes circling above the airport for hours waiting for the snow to clear. It was already 2:00am in the morning, and the snow still showed no signs of stopping. The Dragons knew the environment well, so they took the risk and landed in Lhamo under heavy snowfall, the plane being covered in frost as it descended. The Sernetians followed suit, meeting a similar fate.

As the teams exited the aircraft, they were instantly greeted with chilly air blowing from all around them. The temperature hovered at a bone-chilling -35C, already cold by Msalkan standards for November. There were doubts on the feasibility of carrying out the game tomorrow under this weather, but no matter what happens, the game must go on.

Sernetian Surprises - The Great Trials

Hello and welcome to YTV Sports News! I am your host, Yen Zhouyin and today we witnessed a significant match between the teams of Yangchenia and Sernet this morning at the Dome of the Thunder Panda in Lhamo. The weather during the match was a lot milder than what was seen in Lhamo last night, around -18C with some minor snowfall reported.

This match is significant as it marks the second time the teams of Sernet and Yangchenia will fight each other in the World Cup. Yangchenia had previously lost to Sernet 0-1 the last time both teams fought each other, but this time the Dragons are the home team. Additionally, the Sernetian team are currently ranked 2nd for the group bracket, despite their rank of 330, the lowest among the ranked teams. As always, both Princess Sirivani and Zhen Hoezhi were audiences in the match, however the match also garnered the attendance of Panchen Lama Autsho Tobgay, the match occurring on the day of his 106th birthday.

As matchtime approached, the teams proceeded to their positions. Then, the whistle was blown. Just like during their match against Juvencus chaos gripped the field during the first minutes, neither team making much headway. Audiences described the first 15 minutes of the match as some of the most ferocious and aggressive gameplay they have ever seen, with both teams receiving yellow cards during these first few minutes. Yesui Erkhet was by far the most ferocious of the Dragons, wrestling the ball out of the Sernetians’ hands, delaying their plans to go on offense. By the 18th minute, the ball had fallen into Sporius Bolsting’s possession, however it was quickly stolen back by Yesui Erhket, which was stolen back by Bolsting, and so on and so on. The nonstop clashing between the two players ended with Erkhet initially gaining possession of the ball and dashing for the Sernetian goal, however Bolsting managed to regain possession of the ball from Tsamchoe Thaye, who dashed across the field past Yangini defenders to score the first goal at the 23rd minute, bringing the score to 0-1.

But the Dragons wouldn't give up that easy. The cheer of the crowd was deafening, like that of a massive army preparing for a war, which gave the team the spark they needed to fight back…hard. The game soon returned to the same aggression seen during the first 15 minutes of the match, and seeing a lapse in the Sernetian defense, Yangchenian defender Tubek Orlov took his chance, breaking from his traditional defensive role to attempt a strike against the Sernetians. It was bold, brave and sudden, but it paid off for him — tying the game 1-1 shortly after halftime at the 47th minute.

As halftime ended, the game pressed on. All sense of order on the field had collapsed. The Sernetians made several attempts at the goal, namely by Zenobiusz Kusek, Poltus Esingfort, Banis Kolbense and Stefan Jatrowski. The Dragons had also made several against the Sernetians, with Wu Hsaing, Tsamchoe Thaye, Li Wunming and Yesui Erkhet all making their own attempts. But both goalkeepers held the line, the game settling into an uneasy stalemate between the two teams. But then, at the 80th minute, a sudden shift from the Sernetians, their goalkeeper had now gone on the offense. Seeing this, Wu Hsaing immediately moved to the Sernetian goal, managing to secure it in Pasarowski’s absence. Then on the 82nd minute, Pasarowski had scored, managing to finally route Damdul Gyatso’s defense after three attempts. The score was now at 1-2. But the Dragons still had a chance, this time Gyatso came out onto the field for the very first time. With both goalkeepers in the game, there were no longer any roles. No positions. No duties.

Only a fight to determine who walks away victorious.

And as the last few minutes rolled on, defenders went on offense, offense went of defense, and so on. Audiences could barely understand the situation on the field, as both teams mixed and matched in the center as they attempted to clamor as many points from the other team as possible. However, neither team was able to take advantage of this chaos, the game ending 1-2 with a Sernetian victory.

The Kordavian Ministry of Public Integrity has banned the Naked News Network from broadcasting in Kordavia. The MPI has frequently been the subject of harsh criticism from foreign human rights observer groups for repression of freedom of expression and stifling reporting of alleged human rights violations by the Altburgheim regime. However, this week they received a rare vote of support from the World Assembly Human Rights Council, whose Special Rapporteur Scallbig Scunsnum said of the decision to ban NNN broadcasts “…yeah, we get it, fuck that shit”.
In a sign of a continued gradual thaw in relations between the largely isolationist Kordavian regime and its Rushmori regional counterparts, Själar i Mörkret, by Tikariot based metal band Tystnadens Rike, has become the first foreign track to top the Kordavian Hitparade in several years. Bands from across Rushmore have been invited to participate in this year’s Eisenruf Festival, noted for its legendary Hammerbühne stage, forged from old tank parts from the War of National Liberation.
Counter-regime saboteurs have been blamed for an explosion at the Riegstahlwerke. The Ministries of Industrial Progress and Labour Harmony jointly confirmed that Kordavian industrial ore processing always complies with the highest worker safety standards and that only the infiltration by foreign agents could explain the explosion that killed two workers.

With twelve matchdays played and just six to go, we are now two-thirds of the way through World Cup 100 Qualifying — and the picture in group five already looks quite different than it did at the halfway mark. After earning a single point in three matches, Canamn has dropped out of the playoff race entirely. There is now a clear top four, instead of a top five, with fourth-placed Oscioru and fifth-placed Lebronsleftnut separated by seven points. However, the teams in first through fourth are separated by just two points. Ko-oren has picked up only one point since the halfway point, and their lead in the group has been reduced to a single point.

The teams’ remaining schedules are also fairly consistent, save for two teams with upcoming byes and two teams which have already taken theirs: each of the top four have one remaining home fixture against a top-four team, one away fixture against a top-four team, one top-four team they won’t play, and three to four matches against opposition making their WCC debuts this cycle. Ko-oren will play Oscioru at home and Carpathia and Ruthenia away, while Qusmo will do the inverse. Carpathia and Ruthenia will play Ko-oren at home and Qusmo away, while Oscioru will do the opposite.

There’s nothing separating these teams — for each of them, it’s all within their hands now. Or is it? We’ll look at the worst-case best-case scenario for each of group five’s top four teams — the best-case scenario in that they win all their remaining fixtures, but the worst-case best-case scenario in that nothing else goes their way that is outside their own control. Could your team qualify to the World Cup by firing off a string of wins? Would you have to tack on one final, additional win in a playoff to get there? Or would you have to hope for help from other teams to get results from your rivals to have a shot? Let’s find out.

Ko-oren has more points than any other team in the group, and it has a match in hand on two of the other three top contenders. Their scintillating form over the entirety of the first half of Qualifiers has provided them a very healthy cushion. Yes, they have used up nearly all of it now, but if they right the ship and return to their winning ways, they’ll have nothing to fear. Ko-oren remains the only team in the group to have automatic qualification entirely within its own grasp. It doesn’t matter what any other team in the Multiverse does: if Ko-oren wins its remaining group five fixtures, the Dragonflies will play in the World Cup.

With even a single dropped point, though, others’ door to winning the group will crack ever so slightly open. If Qusmo wins each of their remaining matches, they will remain one point behind Ko-oren every matchday — and would overtake Ko-oren if the Dragonflies drop points. Carpathia and Ruthenia and Oscioru are slightly more distant threats because of Ko-oren’s match in hand, and the Dragonflies could open up an even greater gap with head-to-head wins in their remaining fixtures with that pair of nations. If they accomplish that feat, Ko-oren would require only five points from their other four remaining fixtures to stay ahead of both those nations to guarantee a playoff spot, since the most either would be able to collect would be twelve. Ko-oren would have earned eleven, enough to beat Oscioru by a single point and edge Carpathia and Ruthenia on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Carpathia and Ruthenia is currently in second position, just one point behind the leaders, and their very next match is against Ko-oren. A win in that match would give them the group lead, but they can’t guarantee they’d keep it through the end of Qualifying, because Ko-oren has a match in hand. Even if the Carpo-Ruthenians win all their remaining fixtures, the Dragonflies could simply retake the group lead during the Dragons’ bye.

That said, they could guarantee a playoff spot at minimum. They are tied with Qusmo on points, and Qusmo has a match in hand, but Carpathia and Ruthenia have one remaining match against the Caldera Sun. If they win in Qanz, they’ll go up three points and clinch the head-to-head tiebreaker, meaning not even Qusmo’s match in hand would be enough to catch up. Carpathia and Ruthenia don’t have Oscioru on their upcoming schedule, but Oscioru also has a bye ahead of them, so that would cancel out the Dragons’ bye. A perfect six wins to close the campaign would guarantee a playoff berth at minimum — and, if Ko-oren were to drop points in any of their other five remaining fixtures, it would even win the group and deliver automatic qualification to the World Cup.

Qusmo is in third, but they’re actually in quite a favorable position for being outside the playoff places. They trail Ko-oren by a single point, and although they’re behind Carpathia and Ruthenia in the table, they’re tied on points and have a match in hand. Regarding Oscioru, they lead the Osci by a single point, currently lead the head-to-head tiebreaker, and have a match in hand. Win out, and Qusmo would finish at least six points ahead of Carpathia and Ruthenia and at least seven ahead of Oscioru, due to upcoming fixtures against both, in addition to the match in hand.

That wouldn’t necessarily be enough to pass Ko-oren, who could remain one point ahead every matchday through the end of Qualifiers if they also won all their remaining fixtures. However, if Ko-oren were to drop any points, Qusmo would be able to win the group if it continued its winning streak all the way through the end of Qualifiers. That would require the team winning a total of twelve consecutive matches, all in competitive fixtures, however. They are halfway to that statistic, but it would also set new records for the team’s longest-ever winning and unbeaten runs, both currently capped at ten. Qusmo’s longest unbeaten streak since the Reforms is eight, and their prior longest winning streak since that time was just five.

That said, Qusmo’s position with regards to at least making the playoffs does look strong if they can defeat both Carpathia and Ruthenia and Oscioru. In fact, Qusmo could even afford draws against both those teams if they win each of their four remaining fixtures against bottom-five opposition: they’d collect fourteen points, compared to a maximum of thirteen that either the Dragons or Osci could earn, meaning they’d stay ahead of both. Qusmo could even lose any single one of its remaining fixtures, besides its home match against Carpathia and Ruthenia, and still have a route to the playoffs within its own hands if it won all the others: such a route would mean Qusmo would collect fifteen points, Carpathia and Ruthenia would collect no more than twelve, and Oscioru no more than fifteen, meaning Qusmo would remain in the top two.

With wins in both of their remaining matches against their closest opposition, Qusmo could collect as few as seven points in their other four remaining matches — or even just six points, if they either win by multiple goals against Carpathia and Ruthenia or win the overall goal difference tiebreaker, which they currently lead — because neither the Dragons nor the Osci would be able to surpass that total, with a bye and a loss to Qusmo on their ledgers.

Oscioru is certainly in the fight, just one point behind a playoff spot and two behind an automatic qualification spot, but La Nazionale’s fate isn’t quite within their own hands because the team will also have to sit out the upcoming matchday with a bye. Of course, during that time, either Ko-oren or Carpathia and Ruthenia will drop points, if not both, and Qusmo certainly could as well.

Oscioru still have head-to-head matches remaining against both contenders who have a match in hand, so they could guarantee neither of those teams earn more than fifteen additional points if the Osci win all their remaining fixtures, which would also add up to fifteen. In the meantime, this would entail Carpathia and Ruthenia losing to both Ko-oren and Qusmo, meaning they would finish at least five points behind Oscioru. Still, in this scenario, Ko-oren could manage to clear Oscioru by two points, and Qusmo could do the same by one point, so Oscioru could not guarantee even a playoff spot, even if they won all their remaining matches.

Still, any additional dropped points from Qusmo would allow Oscioru to catch up, and because the Osci would win a head-to-head tiebreaker against the Dragonflies in this scenario, the same would be true for Ko-oren. If either dropped any additional points, Oscioru would receive a playoff spot. If both dropped additional points, Oscioru could even qualify for the World Cup automatically — as long as both teams didn’t lose to Carpathia and Ruthenia, in which case a Dragon team which doesn’t drop any points at all could still beat out Oscioru for that spot. Still, the math is fairly straightforward: if the team wins all their remaining fixtures, they will gain one place in the table for every other contender which fails to win all their other matches. At least one nation slipping up is guaranteed due to the schedule, two would give Oscioru a place in the playoffs, and three would allow the team to qualify directly.

Overall, Ko-oren is clearly the best-positioned team in the group to take their fate into their own hands, if they can pull it off. The Dragonflies are the only team that could guarantee they would win the group if they win all their remaining matches, although anything short of a perfect eighteen points could spell trouble. Qusmo is actually the next-best positioned to make the playoffs, with a little bit of margin of error to work with — if they can beat both Carpathia and Ruthenia and Oscioru, they’ll need only seven points from their other four matches to clinch a playoff spot. Still, Carpathia and Ruthenia has it completely within their power to qualify for the playoffs, if the Dragons can win their five remaining fixtures. Finally, Oscioru can’t technically guarantee a playoff spot even with five more wins, but they can come awfully close and would be ready to pounce if any other top contender slips up.

All in all, it seems likely that group five won’t be resolved until full time whistles start ringing out on matchday eighteen. The action, and the permutations, will likely be anxiety-provoking for fans of the nations involved. For neutrals, however, it should be one of the most exciting groups in this extra large edition of World Cup Qualifying.

The airport of Gador Umba had the same impersonal atmosphere that characterizes those buildings across the world, but to Trevor Augustus, it felt as if someone had turned the thermostat down a few more degrees than usual. On the bus towards the place, it had been notably quiet. Everyone realized that the defeat against the Liberationists, mimicking group leader SRS, had been a splendid case of knocking in your own windows. Even more, it had been a medicine of their own taste for the Red Turtles. After ten minutes, there had been a wayward shot from the second line. It was not all that dangerous but Izzy Powell completely miscalculated the effect on the ball and saw it disappear behind him. After that point, the Liberationists did exactly what the Red Turtles had done in Oakling: give them the ball but as soon as someone got within thirty yards of the goal, you try to kick the legs from underneath them. It ended in 1-0: one painful injury for JJ Sevilla and zero goals scored.

The attacking duo, Philips and Major, that had been lauded by the press after the stunt victory over Dhemixia, would get their fair share of the bad reviews. But Trevor Augustus knew that there was a single target for their slights and discontent, and that it was hanging on his back. So far, people had rarely bothered about the level of the football displayed: as long as the points flowed in, who cares? Carving out a six-point gap on Dhemixia, the main challenger for the second place, had not only gotten the pundits behind them but had also given a nice cushion to avoid a last-match clash for the play-off spot. Augustus knew that in those circumstances, all logic would go off the table. It would be about who kept the clearest head and even if he had managed to bluff his way out of a first game against McMahon’s Serpents, he had little lust to try his luck a second time. But after this one, the cushion had vanished in thin air. Even if they won every winnable match, with the Serpents doing the same, the gap would be three points ahead of the last kick-off. Considering the goal differences of the two opponents at hand, ending equal on points was not an option.

So now, Augustus would need to pray for Dhemixia to make a mistake, or if the situation got worse, one more mistake than the Turtles. Augustus knew he had not lived the kind of life that saw prayer answered. And that was assuming that the Red Turtles won all games against lower placed teams. Unless…

Unless they took points where no one expected it. But how on earth w-

“Coach?”

Izak Powell looked like a schoolboy who was caught with sweets. Well, to be honest, Powell always looked a little like a schoolboy, something in his size being too small and the haircut that really was not an option anymore once you were past fifteen, let alone when you were a young father with a full-time job. But there was something extremely likable about Powell. Few would put the loss on him, even if he could have done better on the sole goal. The focus would, not incorrectly, be on the complete lack of firepower in front of the opposing goalkeeper. They had had eighty minutes to turn it around. The Turtles had gathered the grand total of two shots on goal: it was a disgrace.

“I think… I think it’s better that you start Pesonen again, coach.”

Well, it’s quite rare that you hear a player suggest to bench him and for Augustus, it was a first. But Powell had voiced what he had not dared to the rest of his staff, so it was only fair to be open to him.

“I… I want to as well, Izak, no offense.”
“Non taken.”
“But, I can’t. He has been banned by the FA.”
“So, if he plays, we will get our points deducted?”
“What are you thinking about?”

For some reason, Powell still looked like a schoolboy. But like one that had given a bag of sweets to the principal when asked while managing to keep two more back in his rucksack.

“It’s not the first time that we get Jouko to start under ‘less optimal’ circumstances.”
“Getting him on the pitch is one thing, Izzy… But who says that Jouko still wants to play for Anewkansas? We’re talking about the nation that just expelled his brother to… Wherever it is the Pesonens are from. And that still has a second case whether his parents and youngest sibling will follow the same path. I mean, if I were Jouko, I would let in twenty goals.”
“I respect that coach. Maybe I’ld do the same, I don’t know. But Jouko… There’s something more.”
“What do you mean?”
“You know how the connection between ‘permitted’s and their motherland usually gets cut short?”
“Yeah, I heard about that. To stop them from sending over more people outside the framework and from sending too much cash back home, stuff like that.”
“So, if you’re in Anewkansas and permitted, and you want to reach out to those out there, it is quite hard. There are ways to smuggle out messages but they tend to be murky. However…”
“However?”
“Permitteds lose their work papers if they leave the country. But if you’re abroad, the government can no longer check who you are dealing with. Yes, there is a Prosecor agent but he’s easily distracted, if you know what I mean. So…”

Trevor Augustus started to smile. Powell might be a schoolboy, but a damn clever one.

“So, what you’re saying Izzy is, that if Jouko wants to stay in touch with his brother, he needs a road outside. And there is only one for him: playing for the national team as if his life depends on it.”
“Starting with the Squornshelan Remnant States. I mean, if he does good there, there will be no official who dares to ban him again. All it takes is a bit of courage.”
“Keeping a clean sheet in that game will be impossible. But there is no harm in trying.”

As Powell walked away, Augustus wondered for a second whether his goalie had played like a wet towel on purpose just for this barter but… No one would be that insane to try that? How clever can a schoolboy be?

A pair of eyes observed from between wooden houses, keeping to himself as he observed the battleground ahead of him. Despite the rustic appearance of the region he was in and the obvious powerful clashes he saw, he had to admit he was rather glad to be there. All he had to do was patiently wait for both parties to off themselves. Amidst the sounds of sword clashes and fireballs, he turned once he heard two puffs of smoke. The two he had allied to had returned at last.

[Leader] - Alright, guys. What did you find?
[Kunoichi] - Their forces are equal in number, possibly in strength too.
[Ninja] - Most of their remaining numbers seem to be of lesser quality. Whatever they use to recruit them, it's running low.
[Leader] - I wouldn't be surprised if they're running each other out of resources through their constant conflict. Even better, they're doing so while having this derranged look from what I could see. I think that we'll be fine if we let them fight for a couple more days.

The party reached a stop near the riverside, possibly as a way to try and improve the mood. Alas, their recent loss made things a bit tough to stomach. Still, their current life continued, and there wasn't much else to do about it. Soon, a chunk of them found themselves fishing, briefly in silence until one voice chose to break things up.

[Licentian Isles] - So... where are we now?
[Tumbra] - That Miss OMA lady said we're in Agartha. And then she made this face of disgust for some reason.
[Rory] - She probably got some bad memories... I mean, I know my time with the Doctor is full of them and-
[Doctor] - Yes, let's keep that to ourselves for now. Still, do you all reckon she's hiding something from us?
[Tumbra] - I don't know, man. I guess they're still shaken over what happened.
[Licentian Isles] - True. That fox lady has barely said a word since then. Poor girl.
[Tumbra] - Hey, uh, how's the bot there doing?
[Licentian Isles] - He's fine. Already gave him an oil change; he's taking care of that magician you guys brought along.
[Tumbra] - Wait, she's awake?
[Licentian Isles] - Well, yeah. She couldn't sleep through the rest of the story anyway. Doubly so when we have already lost someone.
[Tumbra] - ...Yeah.

While that happened, the brains of the operation were once again checking their maps. Olga fingered one map in particular with disappointment.

[Miss OMA] - We're at Agartha indeed. Hate this place.
[Valanora] - Anything that we need to know about it that you have not told us about?
[Miss OMA] - It was a particularly unique singularity in that it was divided by multiple forces. A resistance movement and three queendoms. Amazons, Pirates and the Nightless City. All incredibly sexist, too.
[Yamaxanadu] - ...I don't suppose I could just send them all to hell and save us the time, correct?
[Miss OMA] - It's... more complex than that, yes. You see, Agartha was a bigger singularity, which means we'll have more ground to cover. That said, we haven't come across the Amazons yet, and they should be ruling this territory. That makes me think we either won't stumble upon their leader as a vice-captain... but she was the one I feared the least.
[Valanora] - Well, you did say we were facing the vice-captains; perhaps their alignment doesn't match your story with those singularities.
[Miss OMA] - In a way, yes. You told me you fought Atalanta at Camelot and both Guy and your knight offed Charlotte Corday, whom we met at the remains of Chaldea... neither of those fit those places too much. I imagine that's the Beast's doing, given her lack of conscience and all. And there's also...
[Yamaxanadu] - There's more?
[Miss OMA] - We passed through Camelot, Shinjuku and now Agartha. The beast is making us go through her journey, but while the order follows, we skipped a lot. Either her efforts are so unstable that the lands are slowly converging, which... can be catastrophic in many ways.
[Valanora] - ...It could fold onto itself if the merging is strong enough, wiping us all out inside!
[Miss OMA] - That's one way it could go wrong. But it could also mean something else. Foreign influence.
[Yamaxanadu] - ...Akin to the foreigners that would visit Gensokyo?
[Miss OMA] - ...Foreigners who visit our plan of existence. Aberrations that could break humanity's ability to think if they leak... We're on the clock.

The party stopped at the entrance of a coastal port town, but what they found there, however, was sheer and utter silence. Except for a voice that darted out of nowhere, followed by a hug.

[Qasden] - Mama!

The little girl and her big cat appeared, having darted through the empty streets. Her caretaker, the dragon-wielder Dainer, appeared not too far behind as Qasden was done tackling a downtrodden Kitsunia with a hug.

[Kitsunia] - Q-Qasden? You're here...
[Qasden] - Yup! I've been trying to find you all, but I couldn't see any of you around here...
[Dainer] - We've been walking down this place for a while now, we woke up on a boat a while back off the coast.
[Qasden] - Where's daddy?

Silence hit the party once more. Chromatika eventually took the time to speak.

[Chromatika] - I'm afraid he's...
[Kitsunia] - He's fine, darling. But we haven't found him yet.
[Chromatika] - Mother, he's...
[Kitsunia] - We haven't found him yet, Chrom, dearie.
[Chromatika] - ...

He eyed their expressions. Kitsunia was hopeful he would go with her lie while Qasden remained nonethewiser. Dainer, not too far behind them, looked a bit disgruntled that he would still be unable to collect on his five bucks.

[Chromatika] - ...Yes. We haven't found him yet.
[Valanora] - Ahem. We're on our way to the end of this region. We suggest you come along with us. Guy there is our energy battery, feel free to make a contract with him to have the means to defend yourselves.
[Guy] - You guys could at least call me like... a Master or something? Trainer sounds nifty too, come to think of it.
[Tumbra] - Yeah, I don't think we will. Given your little backstory and all.
[Guy] - A guy can't just play games with cute girls in it?
[Miss OMA] - Just... shut up.

The battle raged through the day and almost into the night. Unified Sunrise handed some sort of covering for his two allies with a grin.

[Unified Sunrise] - I know you guys fancy yourselves as tough, but you might as well cover up to deal with the cold while things go on, y'know.
[Kunoichi] - I would appreciate that, yes.
[Ninja] - We do have to deal with these situations normally, but I suppose I should accept your goodwill.
[Unified Sunrise] - It's fine. I may not be as talented as you guys are in what you do and all, but I do have my tricks up my sleeve. Not to mention, plenty of experience in other stuff. Have at it.

He proceeded to show a bag of chocolates with a grin on his face.

[Unified Sunrise] - These have a bit of liquor, which should help out with the cold. I'm gonna go fetch some clean water to go with it, so you don't end up drunk.
[Kunoichi] - That wouldn't be necessary, you know...
[Unified Sunrise] - Nah. If you're gonna have something like this, you might as well get some hydration. We never know when they'll be totally out anyway. See ya in a bit.

As he left, the duo talked with each other, enjoying the chocolates and the covering they had.

[Ninja] - He would've been an amazing master to have in other lives, wouldn't he?
[Kunoichi] - He's too soft for this Assassin role he's stuck with.
[Ninja] - We haven't seen him fight yet, you know.
[Kunoichi] - That's true. But I've taken a look at what he has, and I'm a bit befuddled. He does have this loudspeaker, but it doesn't make sense as a weapon at all.
[Ninja] - I thought you'd know better than undervaluing someone like that, Kunimitsu. Have you not learned your lesson with the native girl from eons ago?
[Kunimitsu] - Says the clan's leader, who kept underselling me. You know, I could've stolen your sword ages ago, too.
[Yoshimitsu] - Just like it could snow in the desert, you could have done that. The likelihood of it happening, however, betrays you in kind.
[Kunimitsu] - Tsk. Well, it doesn't matter as long as we're here. Hopefully, that plan the kid has will get us out.
[Yoshimitsu] - Nature itself benefits the wise, which befits his profile. We shall wait and see. Like he says.

A sigh left her mouth, showing off the cold weather as it formed a little cloud.

So you want to come watch a qualifier in Sjoedrhavn?
Part 3: The West Side

Savojarna are back in the World Cup after a long absence, and it is the best attended World Cup Qualifier in ages. As a result, we are expecting many new visitors to our capital city of Sjoedrhavn, where Northlight games are played. This series introduces international visitors to the Savojar capital, piece by piece.

Last time, we have illuminated “the city that rules” - Sjoedrhavn’s long, proud history as the capital of Savojarna, and the architectural traces of that heritage within the city. However, there is another power that rests in the city for even longer, and many would argue is even stronger. Today, we are going to trace the story of the powerful, rich bourgeois elites of “Sjö”: its traders and merchants, and the massive harbour buildings, storage halls, and trader palaces that they have build for themselves and their trade. Where the political power has been concentrated on the city island that carries Sjoedrhavn’s castle, the economic power has left the tight and cramped spaces of the Old Town in the 17th and 18th century, and instead built up its seat of power in the New City to the north, and on the western bank of the Trögvan river.

The City That Trades - and used to rule, too

Iron age Savojarna was not as focused to the South as it is today. Back in those days, the combination of a lower population, climates that allowed for farming slightly further north, and a rich wildlife population providing meat meant that Rusyan grain did not have the economic importance it does today. Instead, Savojarna traded Ejanan copper and silver, and Jarnstad iron, primarily with Sumanen and what is today Taeshan. This left the southern coast derided as backwards fishermen, and left the powers to scorn the major natural port at the mouth of the Trögvan river.

However, as Rusyan demand for Savojar iron and timber increased, and as ships became better able to navigate the often wild seas between the islands and the mainland, trading posts popped up - and Sjoedrhavn’s port quickly became a favourite spot. Part of this was the ease of shipping goods up the Trögvan, but what was even more important was that the local overlord had sold the right to govern the city and its harbour to the merchants. Profiting off the sales of goods directly, they kept customs and tariffs low to attract traffic from the closer-by port of Birja and laid the foundation for Sjoedrhavn’s legendary wealth.

The merchants organised in the “Companies” - a hierarchy of trading houses, the leadership of which was passed on through a system of part inheritance, part meritocracy. The Companies were divided into tiers, topped the Five Great Companies of Sjoedrhavn, a sort of aristocracy of the city. Below those came a more fluid tier of the Lesser Companies, traditionally 14 but the number could fluctuate as trading companies rose or fall. Finally, there were small companies, often comprising just one captain and some capital-givers. Those were typically set up by former captains who could secure funding for their own ship, or by illegitimate sons of families from the larger companies. Together, those made up a city council where the Great Companies held four votes each, the Lesser Companies held one each, and seven votes represented the interests of the lowest tier. It was this council that invited Halvard the Wanderer in as a lord to profit off his military power, but they retained a lot of influence in governing the city itself.

Handlare - The Neighbourhood Built on Money

The old centre of power of the Sjoedrhavn merchants was the old town around the city hall, where the city council used to meet. But in the 15th and 16th century, as Sjoedrhavn became the Imperial capital, the merchants felt squished by the increasing space claimed by the Imperial Castle and the government buildings. As a result, they moved across the river, and the first to move was the Great Company of the Golden Eagle. In 1539, Hus Gyllen Örn, a majestic renaissance palace, was constructed as the first of the great trading houses. It has since been expanded significantly, and in 1882 was converted into a museum to show off the private art collection of the Gyldörn family. Following the revolution, it has been nationalised, and is now home to the Savojar National Gallery, featuring a large collection of jewelry from the middle ages as well as the most iconic paintings from the Imperial period.

Walking south along the Trögvan river, we encounter more houses from that period in the district now known as Handlare, the Merchant’s District. About 150 metres south of the national gallery, you can see another major city palace with five impressive columns, symbolising the five great companies - the former Savojar Trading House, where merchants and their customers were buying and selling the rights to goods shipped from Rusya. In front of it, there is a statue of Frederik Erik Roosgaard, the driving force behind the trading house. Nowadays, it is used as the headquarter of the Savojar Worker’s Bank SABK. To celebrate the crowning of Kristian III. in 1714, the Savojar companies built the St. Peter’s Church on the banks of the Kjellan river, from where it is just a short walk down to Fisketorget square. Here, three buildings represent the former economic might of Sjoedrhavn: two more trading houses of the Great Companies flank the square, while the front towards Kjellan is dominated by a large market hall that is still in use to sell fish to the city.

Crossing the bridge, we enter the Harbour City - Havnstaden - where the trading happened in the late 17th and 18th century. Right on the southern bank of Kjellan, the old weighing house dominates Skaletorget, a majestic brick building. From here to the south, there is a 600 metre long near-straight stretch of old warehouses, almost all representative buildings made from brick, wood, and creamy southern Sjoedrhavn rock. The entire harbour peninsula and its warehouses, office buildings, and harbour administration buildings forms a protected ensemble representing the history of the city as a trading hub. Finishing off the walk along the front of the sea towards Sjögatan, we finish this tour at a massive sailing ship anchored in the sea. The Sleipnir is an early 18th century trading ship that got reconstructed and preserved as a museum ship in the Savojar harbour, and one of the city’s most popular tourist destination. Today’s tour ends one street over in the Lilla Gamle Havn pub, a restaurant and pub located in an old warehouse that is not only serving excellent food and local beer, but also a great spot for a WCQ game if you have failed to get tickets.

Thor was feeling decently pleased with the way that the Wanderers had been playing, it was hard to complain about a lack of a defeat through the first ten games of the campaign. A five point lead over second and a six point lead over third with a game in hand was somewhat comfortable but given that the team still had to play both Katzeburg and Natkr did leave a bit of a pause for the manager. In fact the Wanderers next game was away to Katzeburg and failing to get at least a draw in what was the most difficult game remaining on the schedule would make the final stretch a bit more squeaky bum time than what the manager would have liked given just how well the team was performing. Despite how well the team had played in the first ten of the sixteen matches of the campaign, there was the dreaded fear in the back of his mind that this could turn into another cycle where the team had one of the best records in qualifying and it not be enough, much like a few cycles ago where they lost once and it was enough to keep them out of the Finals. That cycle was a nightmare that haunted the dreams of any modern Wanderers fan, as it had all gone so well until the very moment that it did not.

If there was any true concern to be had, it was that the defense failed to keep up their mightily impressive record and had conceded twice to second from bottom Manuelian Empire in the last home game, raising their goals conceded from a solitary goal to three. The team had scored eight that game and had to no one's large surprise had tuned out a bit in the final quarter of an hour, allowing the visitors to have grabbed a couple of goals. In isolation it would mean absolutely nothing at all but going into an away game against one of the two teams trying to reel the Wanderers back into a true group race would give Katzeburg reason to believe that the Wanderers might be there to be had. Luckily the game the following window against Natkr was going to be in the Stade de Torgos and that was going to be a huge boon to the team, as it had been away to Natkr that the team had dropped their only points thus far in the campaign. Getting them back in the home stadium where they had been playing as good as anyone in the sport right now gave Thor the faith that they would pull out the result.

Yet this game away to Katzeburg was looming large and Thor looked at the players at his disposal and how he would need to deploy them to ensure that the team could at least manage a draw against a team that had just shipped ten goals past the last team to visit their home ground. They were an attacking team that wanted to press their advantage in the final third with a mix of athleticism and technical skill. It was perhaps a good thing that the staff had turned over so much of the defensive part of the national pool heading into this qualifying cycle, as their old legs would of last cycle likely would not have been able to keep up with the way that their hosts were going to try and come at them. It was going to have to be a game where the team's midfield suffocated the hosts out of the match with possession, frustrate both the team as well as their fans so that they got desperate and then exploit the spaces they would create in trying to get forward on the attack. It was going to be a trying task for the defense and the midfield but it would give the team its best chance of grabbing a result, a result which would calm a lot of fears about the way the end of the campaign could play out if they failed to do so.

The Crown Prince sighed a bit to himself as the sun set on the day and night slowly was replacing the departing day as the sky transitioned from blues and oranges to the darkness of midnight blues and blacks. The last few days spent with the Princess from Banija had truly been special, they had met at the match and for whatever reason Azra had decided to join in. They had exchanged pleasantries as well as gifts, with Ujamaa having presented a beautiful painting of a lion sitting beside a fire, while he had had one of the most toymakers in Torgos specially craft a wood carved lion's head that looked quite regal. The detail in the carving had been absolutely intricate and he felt quite proud when he explained it to the Banija Princess. "Before the modernization effort from Eura nearly seven decades ago now, the most common exports were wooden toys, it was proud profession that still remains a tradition to this day." It was not as a prominent profession as it had been prior to the modernization effort that brought factories and service work to the islands in far greater quantities than before, but there was still something special about those toymakers.

Afterwards they had retired to the royal palace where the two took some dancing lessons, a tango instructor that the Princess had brought with her in her entourage. It was a bit embarrassing for Iskander as he felt like he had two left meet, he had been groomed to be the head military officer for his sister and had not paid attention to things like dancing lessons in his youth. There had been games of chess and military strategy and lessons on how to disseminate various intelligence reports, those had called more to him instead of dancing and music and the other artsy things that his father tried to get him to enjoy to be a more well rounded person. Despite feeling like he was making a bit of a fool of himself, he endured the lessons and by the time that they had ended and it was time for dinner, he felt like he might have started to get some of the basics. "My sister is going to be quite impressed if you actually find a way for me to not have two left feet on the dance floor. She keeps wanting me to be more of a face for the family, to attend my duties as a royal as well as the governor of Peynol."

He took a moment to collect his breath and then motioned for her to follow him before moving from the guest wing dining room that had been emptied out to make room for their lessons and towards one of the offices he used when he was in the palace for official duties. There upon the desk was a map of the nation and he motioned with his right hand to the eastern island on the map. "That is Peynol, the oft forgotten half of the Dual Islands for those from abroad. Part of all the agreements following the succession crisis was that I was made governor of the island, making me the third most powerful person in the nation technically, just behind the queen as well as the prime minister. Unlike my sister though, I often let all the elected official handle the duties of the office, only really making my presence felt for the occasions that call for it. I'm not sure if that makes me a good or a bad leader, suppose it depends on your perspective." He frown momentarily before smiling again, the company too good to let his own doubts about his ability to cloud his mood. "Anyways, enough about that, I am sure you are famished. The cooks here can make just about anything, so feel free to ask for anything you might desire." He said, taking his hand in hers and walking towards the royal wing's dining room.

KSK 2-0 MIR / Jouppi breaks through to give Kelssek vital home win

James Jouppi’s quickness to capitalize on a counter-attack provided the winning goal at the Stadium of the Workers and one that could prove cruical in this qualifying campaign, as Kelssek moved into second place over their opponents. The players were cagey about admitting it, given the strong indignation among fans about being in this position to start with, but it was an important win for Kelssek that keeps them in the hunt to qualify for the World Cup, something that was very much in doubt before this match.

A bit of luck was also in play as with Martian Independent Republic pushing for the opening goal after an hour of back-and-forth football that saw both sides lacking a cutting edge in the attacking third, a blocked shot broke into the path of Titan Pogbacar, who showed great awareness and skill to spot Jouppi’s run and find him with a 40-yard through ball. There was still much to do for the Shearwater full-back and goalkeeper Henri Enwye came out aggressively, but Jouppi showed both touch and composure to take the ball around the keeper and put his shot into the back of the net.

Unbowed, Martian Independent Republic regrouped to push for the equalizer, knowing their own qualification hopes were in the balance. They could be frustrated to concede again just as the fourth official was signalling 6 minutes of added time as, while putting pressure on Kelssek, an excellent tackle by Agapeto Licea not only broke up their efforts to work the ball through the midfield but was then quickly sprayed out onto the wing, where Ariane Hirji blitzed past her marker to put it on a plate for Rolando Cutter to volley it into the goal from point-blank range.

The Martian Independent Republic still has a game in hand, although some big wins against weaker opposition has given Kelssek a strong goal difference advantage if they end up tied on points. There’s little margin for error as the home match against first-place Stewartika further down the calendar could be the one that will see who can take their fate into their own hands.

Asked if he was happy to have come out on top in a must-win match, Kelssek manager Obey Chidiebere sought to gin up his players. “I had the confidence in this group to come through, but they should take the credit. It’s an important three points, and we’ve set ourselves a task to battle through the matches remaining.”

Another talking point was Kelssek getting two wins in this international period without striker Lionel an Deòir, leading to speculation that he may have played his last match for the national team. Chidiebere wouldn’t let that one run away with the media, though, saying of the decision to drop him from the squad, “I think we’re going to need Lionel’s goals in the future, but he’d be the first to say it’s not been happening for him the last little while.”

World Cup 88: Retrospective

World Cup Qualifiers 88 were a period of rebuilding and rebounding in a sense for Flavovespia. Failures last time out, as well as a poor AOCAF Cup 53 meant Marcus McCormick in his second stint came into the Qualifiers already under pressure. In the end, Flavovespia finished 3rd, a bit off the Top 2 Newmanistan and Omerica, who gave Flavovespia 4 of their 5 losses. Getting past the top seeds was still a challenge, but there was a renewed belief in the squad.

In some ways this squad was the first time a lot of the future stars were together, and the seeds of the future were sown. Aarif Muhammad was now clearly the main goalkeeper, David Lyons and David Blythe were now settling in at the wings, and Tony Gardner was becoming a key central defender. The midfield was still a mixed bag, with Kieron Player still taking time to settle, and a lack of a decisive central figure, although David Clark was prominent. Scott Coleman and Steven Hall were still key in attack, but Michael Cole was making himself known. Jonathan Feld, Daniel Lansdell and Robert Totten were prominent, and getting an appearance was the flamboyant goalkeeper Lucky Diamond. Plenty of players were also playing Club football abroad, a sign of growing confidence in Flavovespian players.

Cup of Harmony 80 was unfortunate in some regards. 2 wins and a loss saw Flavovespia win their group. However they were out in the Round of 32, losing 0-2 to co-hosts and eventual winners, Græntfjall. A highlight of the tournament was a spectacular long range volley in the game vs The Gothanita Isles by a young Michael Cole, the striker making an impact on the national team. In many ways this was a cycle that showed Flavovespia had a good quality squad growing in stature internationally, and were able to contend against teams around them. However there was a lack of wins against the big nations, a trend that was lingering over the side at this time.

A tie against Dantopia 1-1 and a loss against Chromatika 1-0, meaning they are the first nation to sweep us in the world cup, means we are 3-4-5 (W-L-T). We all get it at this freaking point; it still sucks ass. We probably won't get to the true World Cup (5 matches left and can't possibly be expected to win them all, can we?), so we just need to focus on playing to get as many wins as possible.

You see, our nerdy president/leader JustBry4:) did some research, and concluded that the more games you win, the higher you are ranked, and the more likely you are to win compared to other nations, and the process repeats itself over and over again. So we just need to exploit this.

It won't be easy. Some people in the top 10 in the ranking have probably been doing this for 75% of their lives. However, Oofio said it's the only way to go. We suck, it sucks, this sucks, they suck, you suck, I suck, but we've gotta move on.
We play against Abanhfleft and then Atymnius for the next 2 matches. We just need to beat them. No excuses.

Now, what conclusions can you draw from this? When we score more than 2, we're 2-0-0. when we score 2, we're 1-1-1, and when we score less than 2, we're 0-4-2. This translates to 1.0, 0.5, and 0.167 respectively.

When they score less than 2, we're 2-1-2. When they score 2, we're 1-1-1, and when they score more than 2, we're 0-3-0, or 0.6, 0.5, and 0.

This means we tend to win if we do good on offense and less good even if we do well on defense, but changing the style mod would just give us the opposite problem. That's why we just need to . . . GET BETTER.

DARTFORD — The Dantopian National Team were only able to muster a draw against The United States Of Alpha last night at the Bank of Dantopia Stadium in Dartford. The national team played hosts to the Alphanians in the Dartford Oilers' arena, following up with another ceremonial 'takakoa' performed by the starting eleven on the pitch just after the national anthems were sang. The Lions seem to be adopting this as a home match tradition against international opposition. The Alphanian team watched on and respected the performance, the home crowd cheered on loudly, and then the two teams kicked off.

Bradini Brunson

The Dantopian team immediately started off on the front foot, energised by early pressing from Bradini Brunson, who managed to dispossess the Alphanian defenders passing out from the back and get an early sighter on goal — the powerful low-driven strike hitting off the left-hand post and out. A few minutes later, Brunson saw an attempt from outside the box fire over the crossbar but despite the miss, it did cause goalkeeper Howdoitype some worry. Then, after ten minutes, a tidy exchange between Brunson, Kealoha and Ezra Cunningham through the middle of the park saw the latter denied by the goalkeeper, who got down well to keep the Club ESF midfielder at bay.

However, a reminder was served to the Lions defence after twenty-four minutes when Alex Bullvale had to race off his line to prevent ABaconHair from putting the visitors up one. The Kyethas Riverman goalkeeper was able to make an impressive stop with his feet to keep the score goal-less. Dantopia continued on the offensive — captain Michael Danchevy being denied an opening goal and Adebayo Adeyemi winning the Lions a corner just before half time. Alphanian NotJustBry4 then wrestled Adeyemi down to the ground during the corner routine's kerfuffle in the box, which at first went unnoticed by the referee, before VAR intervened and instructed an on-field review. The forthcoming penalty could not be converted by the normally efficient Michael Danchevy, however, as his spot kick sailed high over the crossbar.

Ezra Cunningham

The second half saw a mesmeric run and stinging shot by Kaleb Kahananui from left back saved by Noobus Howdoitype — the Dantopian wingback has been really impressing with his national team performances of late, and it was he who won his side another corner thirteen minutes into the second period. The in-swinging corner taken by Johnny Kealoha met the head of Ezra Cunningham in the box, who jumped highest and most purposely towards the ball, heading the Lions into the lead and finally opening the scoring on the evening.

The visitors took the hint and woke up, testing the Dantopian defence more and more as time crept on. Rick Bishop opted to make changes to impact the game positively for the hosts; with Dwight Krol replacing the impressive but tiring Kahananui; Will Fodderingham coming on for Adebayo Adeyemi; and Jeremiah Jackson Jr. substituting in for captain Michael Danchevy — with the Tikariot City forward passing along the armband to Dani Spaghetti before going off. Following the changes, Will Cross conceded possession to the Alphanians and they pounced on the opportunity, crossing a teasing ball into NotJustBry4 at the far post, who was able to get a foot to the ball and tap home the equaliser for the visitors.

Zeke Edwards

This blow sucked the life out of the Lions for a moment, but Rick Bishop reorganised his side through two attacking changes; Zeke Edwards on for Bradini Brunson and Maverick Johnson on for Johnny Kealoha. The team were now playing in a 4-2-4 shape to seek out a late winner. Seconds after the Waiakea Warriors striker was introduced, he came agonisingly close to taking the lead whilst attacking another in-swinging corner for the Lions, this time taken by Fodderingham and headed on by Cromwell towards the back post. Edwards missed the bottom corner of the goal by inches with his two poke. This was a huge let-off to the United States of Alpha defence, who managed to grind out the rest of the game without conceding — the match finishing in a 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere in Group 9, Chromatika enjoyed a win against Dēmos, Archalit and Whispinia suffered a 0-0 snooze-fest, and Bandar Cang Prathoren recorded a 5-2 victory for The Ko-orenite Constellation against bottom of the group Karmosora, adding increased pressure towards Dantopia's unlikely qualification hopes. The unranked Lions side have impressed in their performances against the more experienced international sides of the group but manager Rick Bishop has set his sights firmly on one of the two potential qualifying spots. 1^st place will automatically go through to the World Cup proper, with 2^nd place having to settle for a World Cup playoff round. It is more than likely that the first of those two places will be taken by group leaders and perennial World Cup qualifiers Chromatika, but the second spot is very much up for grabs. The Lions now head to Whispinia for a chance to get ahead of the Constellationians in the standings, who themselves have a bye next up.

WHISPINIA — The Lions managed to deliver a fantastic second half surge against hosts Whispinia and secure an important win for them in Group 9 of their World Cup 100 qualifying matches. An unusually quiet atmosphere met Rick Bishop's men at the Whispinian national stadium, with barely any fans filling the arena for the occasion — troubles at home seemingly impacting match-going proceedings. However, the two footballing sides were in attendance, as were their staff and the match officials, so play proceeded, and a tough battle on the pitch in the first half saw limited opportunities for either of the two teams.

Aside from a few misplaced efforts from Johnson and Brunson, very few clear-cut chances were made by the Lions team — the Whispinian defence excellently marshalling the attempts from the visiting Dantopians. At the other end, centre backs Ash Morgan and Keegan Foster were also doing a great job in preventing anything from troubling Alex Bullvale in net. Twenty minutes in, Maverick Johnson appeared to be dragged down in the box by one of the host's fullbacks, but following a lengthy VAR check, the on-field decision of a penalty was overturned and play continued, despite what appeared to be a clear clipping of the intrepid Dartford Oilers winger.

A well-struck curling finish from one of the Whispinian players hit the back of the net after thirty-one minutes, and the single goal separated the two sides heading into the half time interval. This was not the response Rick Bishop wanted from his side following the dropped two points against United States of Alpha in Dartford the previous match-day. A second half resurgence was needed, and the Lions entered that second period rejuvenated and revitalised. Whatever the manager had imparted on them had obviously lit a fire.

Johnny Kealoha

Despite the scoreline, there was no denying that Dantopia were in the driving seat in terms of possession and impetus. Repeated efforts from Brunson, Johnson, Kealoha and Fodderingham were all unnerving the previously resolute but now shaky-looking Whispinian defence. It was finally Kealoha, the Kyethas Riverman attacking midfielder who got off the mark for the Lions, following a driven pass from Dwight Krol into him with his back to goal, Kealoha used his physicality to brush off the defender attached to him, spin around and tuck his effort perfectly into the bottom far corner of the goal.

Dani Spaghetti

Less than ten minutes later, Grenadiers veteran number six — and team captain on the night — Dani Spaghetti got enough of his head on a whipped Kealoha free kick to send it soaring over the oncoming goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Whispinia had attempted to play a high line to defend the set-piece, but had actually allowed lots of room for Spaghetti to run into, and too much space for their shot-stopper to try and cover. With the Lions now in the lead, Rick Bishop's side started to relax and enjoy themselves on the pitch, seemingly creating chances for fun.

Zeke Edwards

Changes from the manager saw Edwards replace Brunson; the Cunningham brothers both come on for Watanabe and the goalscoring Spaghetti; Jackson Jr. take over from Maverick Johnson; and Nico Hollins swap in for Will Fodderingham. Hollins had an instant impact after coming on, after blasting past his opposition fullback, and dragging his cut-back towards Zeke Edwards at the near post. The young Waiakea Warriors forward was able to get his feet right and back-heel the ball into the goal, past the helpless goalkeeper.

Then finally, near the end of play, a poor clearance from the goalkeeper gave Johnny Kealoha the opportunity to score in heroic fashion, and cap his night off beautifully. As the goalkeeper was way off his line when he made the intercepted ball, Kealoha was able to play a faded shot over the top of him from just inside the hosts' half of the pitch. The long, looped shot nestled into the back of the net and the Dantopians were now up three goals on the night, their fourth in total — the wry smile and shrug of the shoulders from Kealoha, the only celebration needed following the impressive fourth goal. Shortly after, the referee blew for full time and Dantopia celebrated their sixth victory of the qualifying campaign, and their most decisive one yet.

Following the conclusion of match-day twelve, Dantopia now sit for the first time in a potential qualification spot within the Group 9 standings. Having pipped The Ko-oren Constellation on points — owing to the additional win over the Constellationians, though they do still have a game in hand over the Lions — Rick Bishop and his men will be fully aware of needing a positive result in match-day fourteen against Aymenoughshire-upon-Oren in order to hold a head-to-head advantage in the event of tied points. The previous encounter against Isidoren at Gēcko Arena ended at 0-0 so currently it would go down to goal difference, which the Constellation have in their favour, if the two sides were to finish on level points.

Other potential contenders for qualification spots include; Dēmos (Atymnius); Abanhfleft — both of whom Dantopia hold a head-to-head advantage over, the former being set in stone following both fixtures being played; and United States Of Alpha, who reign superior in head-to-heads against the Lions thanks to their 3-0 win in match-day 2. Rick Bishop takes his in-form side to Lion City's Quay Arena next to face off against Karmosora. The team will be looking to settle scores in Apollo FC's home stadium, as their previous match-up against the bottom of the group team saw the Lions lose out. Following that game, Dantopia travel away to the aforementioned Aymenoughshire-upon-Oren to face the Ko-orenite satellite state in what seems to be a must win game for the Lions if they want to firm up their unlikely qualification chances.

That is Zenic's record since their 1-0-2 start. 7 wins broken up by a single draw and a gradual move up to 2nd in Group 22 has put Zenic near where they were expected to be. Add in an improvement from a -1 to a +16 goal differential and the Survivors are poised to leap into first place the moment Nova Calania falters even a little bit. Granted, second place doesn't mean the end of the world but simply a much harder road to travel. However, expectations can be a bitch and everyone in the Empire expects Zenic to win this group outright.

Luke Killian also expected to sleep whenever he was in bed but one doesn't always get what they want but what they need. Why he needed to think about the potential ramifications of finishing second in a World Cup qualifying group during potentially the largest World Cup of all time at 4 AM is a mystery to him but clearly the universe thinks he needed it. Up next were Greater Deutsche and Meris, two nations that Zenic had already beaten and would need to beat again if they wished to achieve their goal. Meanwhile, Nova Calania had a match up with Bonusia before getting a matchday off. Effectively, if there was any window for Zenic to make serious progress in closing the gap, this was the window to do so.

But it also meant relying on a fellow Rushmori to beat or draw with Nova Calania. In normal conditions, that would be a bit hurtful pride-wise but not uncommon, even for historically talented nations. Mixing in the fact that it is a fledgling regional sports rival ups the pain a bit more. Luke Killian, thankfully, knew that Zys and the staff would not let pride get in their way and take all the help they could get from whomever, wherever, whenever while also making sure the Survivors would take care of their own business.

And if Bonusia failed to stop Nova Calania? Zenic could just use it as bonus motivation during the 50th Copa Rushmori to deliver the beatdown of a half century.

Well in one of life's delicious ironies, despite in the first half of qualifying we were able to pull results out in the second half of matches, so far in the second half of qualifying we aren't able to carry that on. Unable to win, or even score a goal, at home against a Lebronsleftnut side that we defeated two-nill on the road. Barely able to scrape a nailbiter of a one-nill win over Canamn. All of which has taken place right before we have to go into a window where we find ourselves up against Ko-oren and Qusmo. A Ko-oren side who completely tore us apart, with a five-nill deficit actually being kind to us, and a Qusmo team that have gone on a terrifying six wins on the trot since we defeated them in Vespremsk. Their most recent win? A four to one demolition of Ko-oren, quite frankly they aren't just gunning for the playoff spot at the moment, Qusmo have to have their eyes now firmly on the automatic qualification spot.

A quick glance at the table may have you questioning my cries of bottle job, however it paints a rosier picture than I believe we are in. We are in second, but only by the skin of our teeth, both Ko-oren and Qusmo have a game in hand, and given our upcoming matches we will be at best three points behind the playoff spot and most likely six. With Oscioru only a point behind us, we may find ourselves languishing in fourth six points adrift.

We find ourselves in need of a miracle, can we defeat a wounded Ko-oren or will it just make them more dangerous? The last time Qusmo lost was against us, can we be their bogey team again? All I know is I’ll be there cheering them up till the final whistle blows, and even if we lose take comfort that a bottle job is the Carpo-Ruthenian way.

World Cup 100: Pummelings

As we head into the second half of the qualifiers, it's become more and more evident that the Lightning are going to win this group by a huge margin. They have the largest lead of any group leader (15 points) and are one of just six teams to still be unbeaten. And the results against Al-Tamazgha and Equestria speak for themselves. 7-0 against Al-Tamazgha (for reference, the reverse fixture ended 1-0) and 6-2 against Equestria (5-0 in the reverse).

Goals from the usual suspects (Keigo Nakaji in the 27th, 39th, 44th and 58th, Sōji Kokubun in the 34th and 36th, Kagawa in the 78th) had Kamijiro breeze past Al-Tamazgha. Then more goals from Sōji as he put up the first-ever poker in Kamijiroan history against Equestria (11th, 17th, 43rd, 52nd and 61st minute goals) plus a loose change goal for Akinari Akaminai off a deflected corner in the 72nd led to a 6-goal outing for the Lightning against Equestria.

But the question became evident - is it possible for a perfect qualification run to happen? Al-Tamazgha were one of the teams Kamijiro were most worried about potentially losing to in the build-up to the qualification. They'd proven tough to beat in qualifying rounds past, plus their overall defensive mindset created questions about whether or not Raiji Kagawa's system could break down the low block. And the 1-0 away made it feel like a draw or loss was entirely possible. But no, instead, they got a blowout. Fun times in the dressing room as always.

In other news, for the first time in Kamijiroan history, the team got to witness a team being straight-up ejected from the World Cup.

"Huh. Wonder how bad you have to be in order to get straight-up kicked." Katsu mused to Sōji.
"Dude, you have no idea. Matter of fact, don't even ask." Sōji replied. "Look, our news has reported on drug dealing, human trafficking, the mob, assassinations and worse, but the powers that be haven't even once stepped in to say 'Hey, you might wanna consider using more... muted language. Never once.'"
"Yeah. Let's just leave it at that."

Snestar doesn’t manage to hold off Audioslavia, but still maintains itself in the qualification race

Sitting in third place, just three points under Hapilopper, the Viola is still in the qualification race. While Super Earth was stopped with a draw against the New Montreal States, Snestar could still lose their grip on third place if they aren’t careful.

Audioslavia 1-2 Snestar: Match Summary

At the Stadio Olimpico in Dandelicha, the capital of Snestar, the match against Audioslavia was fully decided within the first half. The Viola opened with a starring performance, initially holding off Audioslavia’s attacks but failing to break through the opponents’ highly defensive system. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t sustainable for more than half an hour, as in the 25th minute, Denzel Keegan practically slid through the defense and left Federico Calvaresi on the ground after juggling the ball around the penalty box like a true master, perhaps with a few fouls. Still, the Viola hadn’t given up just yet: Leonardo de Martino immediately responded to what the Snestaryans perceived as a great insult: a strong, well-placed shot found its way to the crossbar, then slowly advanced closer to the finish line. Hein Hélder had almost managed to make a last-minute goal line clearance, but his timing was just a few seconds too late. Still, Audioslavia’s strength was simply overwhelming for Snestar: Kjartan Lúnquerque, the same man who’d scored a brace in that humiliating 5-2 earlier in the qualifiers group, sprung up in the air and promptly turned to score a fabulous bicycle kick in the 38th minute, making the score 1-2. At that point, it was clear that the reigning world champions were not going to let any further goals in. After forty-five minutes of a frustrating park-the-bus stalemate, which angered many Snestaryan players (with Valentino Garnati, Federico Calvaresi, Riccardo Cavaliere, and Tero Sjölund gaining yellow cards), the match ultimately ended with a defeat for the Viola. The Snestaryans left the pitch full of hope, despite the defeat: if they were going to be able to make the World Cup champions struggle against them, then they had the strength to qualify for the World Cup.

Very Totally Free 0-3 Snestar: Match Summary

Very little is known about Very Totally Free (one might say they aren’t as free as their country name claims). However, the Viola didn’t back down against such a cryptic and mysterious team and proceeded to deliver another dominant 3-0 win. It was clear that there was a large power difference between Snestar and the lowest-ranked national team in the world, at least according to the current rankings. Elisa Baldriga opened up the match in the 9th minute with a sloppy header (quite the unusual goal for her, considering she’s only 165 cm tall). Despite the organized, suffocating attack, the Viola couldn’t find the second goal in the first half of the match. Camilla Arentas was definitely expecting a goal shower, but the second half seemed to have satisfied her: Davide Scognamiglio finally found a goal after coming back from the injury in Matchday 2 against Audioslavia.
