Matchday 6: Snestar Vs Dēmos

Postby Atymnius » Thu Oct 16, 2025 2:53 am

Good day ladies and gentlemen! We are proud to host the Round of 16, matchday 6 of the Baptism of Fire! I am your proud host Apostoli Apostoleris and commenting on the matchup today, alongside Mike Hattenborough, we have a big game: Snestar vs Dēmos. Brought to a TV near you by the Dēmosian News Network.

MATCHDAY 5:
SNESTAR VS DĒMOS

0'

Immediately curtains were drawn as the final match of what would have been either two of these great teams ensued.

Following a tense drawing of fire between the Snestaryan nationals and the Dēmosian Regional Football Team, both players made significant advancements to both sides of the pitch. However, following the peculiarities reminiscent of the previous match, Whyatou did his strange mystics: almost as if it were second instinct. Noticing this the fans merely jousted in anticipation as what were believed miracles became reality.

7'

Apostoli: The Dēmosians are dominating the Snestaryan defensive half!

Mike: Indeed Apostoli and what should be a goal should follow from the free kick…

In what were a mere seven minutes of what would be a forever for the Dēmosians, something quite un-toward rather prioritized its delights.

M: Oh Apostoli, it is an own goal from left-back Riccardo Cavaliere…

Suddenly a deaf-tone silence ensued…

Everyone: WOAHH!

A: And indeed the crowd goes wild, Mike!

M: Yeah, indeed, from what was an unrivaled header from Whyatou—

A: Poor chap got it deflected on his left leg’s thigh… Yep indeed.

They both checked the post-goal analysis as both commentators mutually agreed.

It was indeed an own goal all too early in the game.

However, as match begun kickoff, the unfortunate reality settled in for the Dēmosian players:

Snestar were not finished.

In the same fasion as the match came, did the match exit to what otherwise seemed to end 1-0 to the Dēmosians.

However, in many a case, one should equally be careful of what they wish for:

41'

M: Oh, here it comes Apostoli: the Spanish Salamander—

Apostoli knocked over Mike’s microphone before shouting, panting:

A: GOAALLLLL! The no. 9 has done it again with a crisp shot of the volley, feeded into him by Theodosis and knock-off-capped to the top right-hand corner. Excellent play from the forward.

The match, in itself, saw much inequality, as Dēmos led the proceedings down to half-time just a mere 4 minutes after.

Half-Time Talk

The atmosphere in the dressing room was surreal: players were already feeling as if they won.

Those Snestaryan bastards have no hold on us boys! Let’s park the bus. Who knows? Maybe Riccardo will once again contribute to the team?

Alexi: I know you’re happy boys, I am too, but don’t get conceited. We are just halfway there. There is no victory as far as I am concerned.

He immediately pointed fingers.

A: Whyatou—

Whyatou: Yes sir!

A: Hold the line! Don’t forget that Snestar will now increase the pressure in our half, make sure to parry their efforts.

W: Yes sir!

A: Alright everyone, continue the good fight and let’s win this thing!

Everyone: AVALINÑEA!

They exited the dressing room, however, entitlement still circled over their heads because regardless of what they were told, they were above the game. They smirked with their arms behind their heads.

We’ve got this.

64'

Apostoli: Mike!—

Apostoli: GOALLLL! Fabio de Filippi nutmegged Tyolius before scoring an easy finish against Wyetti. Beautiful!

We don’t got this.

Immediately the voices around the Dēmosian team became inaudible. They couldn’t believe it. Feeling as though they were now behind, they took their past pride aside and shaked the critics. Noticeably they put their hands up to the coach in apology, all in unison. They were so ashamed that should they have bowed as per Japanese tradition, they would do exactly that. It was a charming moment that took its toll on the coaches. The players all felt them saying:

I’ve forgiven you all. Now produce the results and let’s get some damn Starbucks afterwards.

The game followed an intense affair as both teams put their 100% heart out into the pitch. Clinical, visionary passes from Theodosis were evident, fast hyena-pack chases continued from Rafail—whose consistency was evident throughout the match—and Whyatou did his magical steps.

82'

The game neared the final ten minutes. A stringent, desperate last push was seen from the Snestaryan team as they gave it their all, making incredible passes that made them the very Dēmosian Gods of ancient times. One last counter attack. Whyatou and Tyolius were pushing like galvanized horses, chasing after their passions, their lives.

However, Scognamiglio was too far.

After providing one last bullet-shot…

An audible silence appeared.

M: GOOALLL! The Snestaryan national, Davide Scognamiglio, passed a beautiful scene as the team caught Dēmos with the counter, and parrying it away, made a beautiful finish in the bottom-left corner.

A: Who will receive their baptism now?

At the end, the game drew all null as both teams were exhausted to the very ends of their heights. They were too close to their dreams to give up now.

A: Mike we begin with extra time as we anxiously await who will win this: the Snestaryans or the Dēmosians?

117'

The football was nearly in an impossible deadlock as both teams gave it their all, wishing to surpass themselves. However, as is time immemorial, a winner must always prevail.

A: Oh, wait, here it comes Mike!

Everyone: WAIT—

M: GOOALL! The Snestaryan Mattia Castelleti scored from the set-piece free kick as Wyetti could only reach from a centimeter from the ball before falling—

Everything was quiet. The whistle blew.

Where was our baptism?

They fell flat on the floor as their demise were sure-fire: it wasn’t a debate.

After a couple of rounds of interviews—

Well done to the Spanish Salamander for man of the match!—

The Dēmosians went home.

Baptism of Fire 87 - Round of 16

Merulla
Choppyhausen

3

.. Robinson 61’
⚽︎ Lukeson 38’
⚽︎ Alvarado 69’
⚽︎ Corte 88’

⚽︎ Napier 80’

And that’s full time! Choppyhausen win 3–1 in Canterlot and are through to the quarter-finals. Harmon Merrit’s side were efficient and composed — and had a bit of luck, too. Merulla couldn’t make their best spells count and shot themselves in the foot with a red card. Next up for the victorious Team in Teal: a trip to Stalliongrad, where they’ll face Seeberg.

FINAL WHISTLE

90+2 Choppyhausen are just keeping the ball now, running the clock down.
90' McNamara sends a high ball looking for Belmont — but it’s cleared away.
88' Goal for Choppyhausen (1 - 3)
Jule Corte (Caligaris)
That should seal it — right in the middle of Merulla’s attacking push. Cory picks out Caligaris on the edge of his own box, and the substitute sets off on a lung-busting run from deep. He waits until the perfect moment to square it to Corte, who lashes it past Maximus with no hesitation. Six goals in six games for Choppyhausen’s centre-forward.
85' Merulla are pushing hard for an equaliser. Belmont forces a corner after his deflected shot. They play it short, McNamara whips it towards the near post, and Ziggler flicks it with his heel — just wide!
83' Big chance for Blackbird to make it 2–2, but Weiner-Kracht stands tall and gets down well to stop his low effort from around 13 metres out.
81' Ten minutes left. Can Merulla find a way back into this?
80' Goal for Merulla (1 - 2)
Thomas Napier
Weiner-Kracht spills McNamara’s corner, and Napier reacts brilliantly with his back to goal, flicking the loose ball into the top corner from six metres out.
78' Lovely move from Merulla, a slick passing exchange frees Belmont. Holdenbeck throws himself in front of the shot from a tight angle and deflects it over the bar. The corner comes to nothing.
74' Choppyhausen aren’t letting up — pressing high again. Finch intercepts a pass from Hounsou and immediately releases Lampe on the right. His through ball for Corte is just a fraction too short, though, and Michaelsen sweeps it up.
71' The last ten minutes have been tough for Merulla. Now, with twenty minutes to go and a man down, they need two goals to stay alive. The Choppyhausen fans don’t seem too worried — they’re singing loudly in the stands.
69' Goal for Choppyhausen (0 - 2)
Lukas Alvarado (Cory)
Instant impact from the substitutes! Cory drives forward after winning the ball centrally and slips it wide to Alvarado. The winger toys with Gardner — who’s far too passive — and then lashes a left-footed shot under the bar. Maximus can’t get near it.
65' Both sides respond to the red card with a flurry of substitutions.
64' Substitution | Merulla
Thomas Napier (#8) ↑↓ Erikson Vierinha (#6)
Bruce Gardner (#18) ↑↓ Arthur Levesque (#11)
64' Substitution | Choppyhausen
Julius Cory (#7) ↑↓ Andre Finch (#19)
Johnny Caligaris (#21) ↑↓ Dominik Keil (#8)
Lukas Alvarado (#26) ↑↓ Marco Iduna (#10)
63' Corte is back on after a quick check. He takes the free kick himself but curls it just two metres wide.
61' Red Card | Merulla
Livius Earl Robinson
Merulla are down to ten! Tyr wins the ball in midfield and slides an inch-perfect pass through to Corte, who’s clean through. Robinson lunges in desperately but catches him high with studs showing. No question — straight red.
56'Choppyhausen are camping out around the Merulla box for the moment. Maximus gets a hand to Iduna’s cross, just ahead of Lukeson. The rebound falls to Finch, who scuffs the volley. It loops straight into Maximus’ arms.
54' A scramble in the box! After a corner ricochets around, the ball falls to Belmont at the far post — he’s onside because Bender-McKay is behind the line. His close-range shot rattles the woodwork!
47' Merulla make two attacking changes at the break — Robinson clearly wants to turn this around.
46' Substitution | Merulla
Peter Belmont (#14) ↑↓ Ronaldo Fortesque (#9)
Charlie McNamara (#20) ↑↓ James Black (#10)

HALFTIME

45+2 Ziggler shapes to cross, then turns back — and that hesitation costs him, as the whistle goes for half-time.
43' Off the bar! Lampe gets into trouble under pressure from Arthur and loses it. The Merulla man’s low cross comes off Holdenbeck’s foot and almost ends up in his own net — off the crossbar and out. A huge let-off for Choppyhausen.
38' Goal for Choppyhausen (0 - 1)
Tommy Lukeson (Corte)
What a strike — and it’s 1–0 to Choppyhausen! Corte receives the ball just left of centre, sells a neat dummy and lays it right to Lukeson. Without a second thought, the 20-year-old rifles it past Robinson into the bottom corner.
33' Gunner wins the ball off Lukeson and sends Black down the right. The cross is headed clear, the follow-up shot is blocked — Haferkreis mops it up.
30' Choppyhausen enjoying a slight edge in possession. Merulla’s back line is compact and holding strong. Tyr tries his luck from distance — it sails over the bar.
24'Vierinha loses it moving forward, and seconds later Finch puts it straight out of play. Sloppy from both.
22'The tempo’s picking up. A long clearance from Weiner-Kracht catches Hounsou out, giving Iduna acres of space on the left. But he dithers, and Michaelsen wins it back.
15' First good chance for Choppyhausen. Iduna swings in the free kick, Corte rises highest and heads on target. Maximus parries, the rebound drops to Haferkreis — but Michaelsen blocks it behind. The corner comes to nothing.
12' Yellow Card | Merulla
Leo Gunner
Lukeson dribbles into Merulla’s half, skipping past Ziggler and Gunner. Gunner tugs him back by the shirt and eventually hauls him down. First booking of the game and a free kick in a dangerous area.
7' Vierinha splits the Choppyhausen defence with a lovely through ball for Blackbird. But his touch is too heavy, and Weiner-Kracht races off his line to clear it.
4'Merulla are taking a calm, measured approach early on, stroking the ball around in their own half. Choppyhausen are sitting compact, waiting to pounce. Neither side wants to take big risks just yet.

KICKOFF

Two changes for Harmon Merrit’s Choppyhausen compared to the Khaelu match: Corte returns up front after a minor injury, and Haferkreis replaces Frederiksen. Merulla coach Robinson sticks with his tried-and-tested shape.
Merulla (3-4-3): Maximus – Michaelsen, Robinson, Gunner – Hounsou, Vierinha, Black, Ziggler – Arthur, Ronaldo, Blackbird
Choppyhausen (4-2-3-1): Weiner-Kracht – Bender-McKay, Holdenbeck, Haferkreis, Lampe – Tyr, Finch – Keil, Lukeson, Finch – Corte
Welcome back to the BSC Liveticker for the 87th Baptism of Fire! We’ve reached the Round of 16 — and in just a few minutes, Merulla and Choppyhausen will battle it out here in Canterlot for a place in the quarter-finals. Neither team had an easy route to this stage: Merulla edged past Narovi 1–0 in Ponyville, while Choppyhausen only advanced against Khaelu after extra time.

64‘ Wechsel – Merulla
Thomas Napier (#8) ↑↓ Erikson Vierinha (#6)
Bruce Gardner (#18) ↑↓ Arthur Levesque (#11)

Wechsel – Choppyhausen
Julius Cory (#7) ↑↓ Andre Finch (#19)
Johnny Caligaris (#21) ↑↓ Dominik Keil (#8)
Lukas Alvarado (#26) ↑↓ Marco Iduna (#10)

46‘ Wechsel – Merulla
Peter Belmont (#14) ↑↓ Ronaldo Fortesque (#9)
Charlie McNamara (#20) ↑↓ James Black (#10)

- Halbzeit -

12‘ Gelbe Karte Merulla - Leo Gunner

Merulla (3-4-3): Maximus – Michaelsen, Robinson, Gunner – Hounsou, Vierinha, Black, Ziggler – Arthur, Ronaldo, Blackbird
Choppyhausen (4-2-3-1): Weiner-Kracht – Bender-McKay, Holdenbeck, Haferkreis, Lampe – Tyr, Finch – Keil, Lukeson, Finch – Corte

Willkommen zurück zum BSC Liveticker für den 87. Baptism of Fire!

Bhumi Matawis Empire - The Ealy Years (1928-1950)

Bhumi Matawis Empire - The Second Empire (1950-1971)

After the enactment of the new Charter, this period of time was known as the The Second Bhumi Matawis Empire or the Second Empire for short. The shift from nobles led country into commoners was quite smooth. Not much opposition rose from the nobles. Historians stated that the nobles still hold a significant power in the parliament, as part of the upper chamber, this made them feel appreciated and not casted away from the government. Thus, making the transition went smoothly and without much resistance.

Image
Sultan Iskandar of United Kieraha
After the war and anti-government uprising, the economy of the Empire was falling. Prices were increased drastically while citizens' income stayed the same or even decreased. Joyo Hadisukarto went with fiscal policy by helping the poor and the most affected through incentives. But the situation worsened as the currency exchange also fell. Bhumi Bank, the federal bank of the Empire, lowered the interest rate to increase consumer consumption which could help increase production. It helped the situation but not too much. In 1953, Hadisukarto lost the confidence from the Parliament and stepped down from the position of Mahapatih Anom. His successor, Hasan Malik Assegaf tried to balance the situation. He succeeded in pushing the inflation from 7% to 5%. Despite his success, the party, Aliansi Nasional failed to win the second election in 1955. The winner was PSKM by a huge margin while Aliansi Nasional only came third behind Majelis Tinggi Jamangen. PSKM leader Achmad Soleh was sworn in as the third Mahapatih Anom.

He continued to give incentives to the affected people while tightening the fiscal policy. The situation stabilized after his policy success to make the inflation drop to 3% and maintain this position for 3 years. During his leadership, a treaty was signed in 1957 between the Empire and VMC. The treaty was a border agreement between both entities for their territory in Papoland. He also negotiated with United Kieraha leaders about their intention to join the Empire. Just before the election in mid-1960, Sultan Iskandar Al-Mashur of United Kieraha signed the Mandala Charta and officially joined the Empire. The third election was held in late 1960 and it became an intense battle between Aliansi Nasional and PSKM. It was believed by the historians that Aliansi Nasional did a smear campaign to undermine PSKM support especially in big cities. The election ended with a close win for Aliansi Nasional. Hasan Malik Assegaf once again became the Mahapatih Anom.

The economy had been stabilized when Assegaf became Mahapatih Anom. He needs to maintain the situation. In 1961, VMC started the preparation to create an independent East Papoland. Assegaf thought of this move as a way to establish a puppet state in the island. And he publicly opposed such moves. Opposition leader Achmad Soleh however disagreed with Assegaf. But Assegaf didn’t back down. He convinced many powerful politicians that the future East Papoland would never be completely independent. VMC or Holanda will always find their way to meddle with East Papoland domestic affairs. Assegaf's statement however gets support from foreign governments such as Walanae and Southeast Islands. In late 1961, he intended to wage war against VMC in East Papoland. Both Head of States had different views of the war declaration that Raja Graha intervened. The vote commenced and the result was 5-3 for war. With the agreement and permission from the Emperor, Hasan Malik Assegraf declared war on Holanda.

Image

The course of war was rather short. Bhumi Matawis Army crossed the border of East Papoland in December 1961, just a month after the declaration of war. They didn’t face much resistance as the territory was adequately defended by Holanda. But they faced resistance from native Papoland who were against the conflict. However, the resistance was easily crushed. The Navy then reached the coast of Kaimana and blockaded the city while the troops occupied it in a matter of days. After Kaimana’s fall, the navy turned to Sorong and blockaded the city. On the ground, the army occupied several more towns and villages while the Holandan army was concentrated in Jayapura as their last defence. After 7 months of battle, Holanda agreed to negotiate. The negotiation took place on 15 August 1962 where Holanda agreed to give East Papoland to Bhumi Matawis and end their occupation there.

The result of the war brings joy to the government supporters. However, the opposition had a negative sentiment over the result of the war. Achmad Soleh, the leader of the opposition stated taking East Papoland under the Empire wing is making us similar to Holanda, East Papoland only changing who colonized them. His statement ignited anger from the government supporters. Protests gather in front of PSKM headquarter building in Kartasura. Another demonstration was held in front of Achmad Soleh private house. They accused Achmad Soleh as a traitor who didn’t like the glory of his own nation. The police dispersed the protestors after they went violence by throwing molotov bombs at Achmad Soleh’s house. In light of the ongoing protests between the pro and anti-government, a surprising event happened. In 1964, both Walanae and Southeast Islands decided to join the Empire. And after their parliament's approval, both nations officially joined the Empire in June 1964.

The clash between pro and anti-government supporters went intense and spread to other cities. Kartasura, Junggalu, Labuanjaya, Kembangan, Balawan and even Sambuyutan and Baguala also experience the clashed. The situation got worse and the police were overwhelmed by it. Army General Prawiroharjo intervened. He pushed the Emperor and the Assembly to declare a state of emergency status. The Assembly inclined to declare it but the Emperors took the initiative to declare the emergency status. With the permission, Prawiroharjo used the army to stabilize the situation. He announced both Assegaf and Soleh as a threat to the Empire's security and needed to be arrested. Achmad Soleh surrendered on 29 September 1965. And on 6 October 1965, Assegaf was arrested at Labuanjaya International Airport as he intended to flee abroad. Prawiroharjo worked to stabilize the situation and captured all protestors, especially the violence one. These chases happened throughout the 1965 until 1966. In February 1966, after being frozen, the Emperors decided to disband both the government and the parliament. And on 11 March 1966, they awarded the position of Mahapatih Anom to Prawiroharjo who succeeded to stabilize the situation and mandate him to immediately hold a general election.

As a new Mahapatih Anom, Prawiroharjo made a drastic change to the country. First, he limits the numbers of political parties to only 3, Aliansi Nasional (right wing), PSKM (left wing) and Sarikat Rakyat Matawis (SRM, Matawis People’ Union, center). Second, he banned all religious organizations from engaging in any political scene. The country is maintained as secular as possible. And third, the introduction of the Military Faction in the Graha Pawongan, the lower chamber. Thus, starting the involvement of the military into the Empire’s political scene. The election was not held until 1971 which officially ended the Second Empire and started the Third Emperor era.

The Black Ram of Greece: Finale

Postby Atymnius » Thu Oct 16, 2025 9:25 am

If by no virtue delighted lack, your son-in-law is far more fair than black.
- William Shakespeare

After the mystic events of the Colmaijoan match, many Dēmosians, spectators and commentators alike would understandably wonder—what actually happened during that game? From what were vials of flashes interchangeably meshing between the seams of the pitch, to a still-procession of Dēmosian players at one point: finding any answer would be worthy of a full dissertation.

This exploration discovers, however, that exact question.

THE BLACK RAM OF GREECE: FINALE
Who I Want to Be

In the forty-fourth minute of that Colmaijoan match, Dēmos were 3-0 down to an opponent that would not budge.

Apostoli Apostoleris: Will Dēmos ever catch-up?.

And yet suddenly and explicitly then, Whyatou fell down.

Tyolius: WHYATOU!—

Image

The screen was blank.

His consciousness appearing once more, he awoke himself to find what was an unexpected ambience. Butterflies were flying their wings as a simple bunny hoped in his way through what otherwise seemed to be a sanctuary of heaven. A voice called out from the near distance:

You know you are a very strong person.

W: What?—

I said you are strong.

Getting up from the stone scattered near the riverbank, the man wore unassuming white cloth and linen while walking his way towards Whyat.

W: Listen man, no offense, but my team needs me. I can guess this is already fantasy. I want go to home.

Oh you’ll go home alright, but first let me tell you a story.

A sudden beam of light enveloped the man as he stepped into the shoes of the narrator.

Once upon a time there was once a young philosopher who was troubled: he was alone and he couldn’t understand the Christian sentiment.

Young Philosopher: Mom, why should we bow down to that statue there out of warrant of what our feelings are?

The Mom: Because son, it is a tradition we Danish all share. Hold out your hand.

The Young Philosopher held out his hand to the mother.

The Mom: In Daneland, holding out your hand is a signal that we are all together. That my feelings are your feelings and that we must therefore share the same mind. By putting our hands like this, irrespective of what individual traits we have, we all are one before God. That is why we have state religion here. Others may not understand but that’s because they never wanted to.

The Young Philosopher would eventually become vexed with this response. He learned that he was different to every other kid around him and that in fact, he was never destined for the bonds of others. The very same bonds his mother spoke of.

Young Philosopher: How come I don’t relate to God like the others do? Why am I different?

The kid would struggle with this question on and on but eventully reached his own conclusion, his own way to declare his faith: It is up to us to determine the deeply passionate, interpersonal relationship we choose to have with God.

As you may expect Whyatou, the kid was not happy. Back then, the Danish State did not know what mental health was, so they assumed demons infested the young child. He was the Child-Demon of Denmark.

But he, nonetheless, changed his fortunes.

Discover a second face hidden behind the one you see.

Buzz…buzz…a radio mutter was heard as the two listened in:

Recently a book was published here with the title Either/Or! It is supposed to be quite strange, the first part full of Don Juanism, skepticism, et cetera, and the second part toned down and conciliating, ending with a sermon that is said to be quite excellent. The whole book attracted much attention. It has not yet been discussed publicly by anyone, but it surely will be. It is actually supposed to be by a Kierkegaard who has adopted a pseudonym....

Kierkegaard, would later become famous for his work and many at the time, and even now, the book was considered his magnum opus. He would later go on to challenge the Danish State and its concept of state religion, and proposed an unforced, deeply personal aesthetic to the walk with Christ.

Personally, Christ doesn’t exist in our Dēmosian society, but it was an interesting read nonetheless.

Without even having known, the scene that created the very same hyper-real experience between Whyatou and the man immediately flashed as a newspaper article, typed on the very one he held in his hand.

W: So what does this—

Silence.

Whyatou could immediately feel the oppression, his shoulders shrinkling in auspicious fear.

Listen…young man, I don’t think I need to tell you your fight for the racial, equal sense in Dēmos, your mom’s experiences in Colmaijo or your current state of mind. The state of mind that others may not see but I can.

The man was silent for a bit.

But what I will tell you is that you must be the change you want to see even if no one cares so that you will make them care.

The man muttered a bit before finally saying:

I will give you my power.

And should you tell anyone, I will kill you.

Immediately Whytaou stood up from the pitch—

Tyolius: Hey man! What’s going on—

He was silenced and the man who silenced him was silent.

Mike: Alright ladies and gentlemen, we begin again with kick-off as the ensuing Colmaijoan forwards rush for the fourth goal.

Apostoli: Oh but what is this!

Three-steps, two ladders and one up-stair.

One portico, two chairs and one table.

I have made it home.

Inconspicuously—

A: GOALLL! Whyatou scores alone, leaving a near defenseless Colmaijoan team stunned!

They could not believe what they saw. A near perfect attack by a defender never seen before in Baptism aeons. As the man went back to his position, no, not just his position, but rather his changed position in life:

Snestar pulls of a glorious comeback against Dēmos: de Filippi and Scognamiglio save the Viola from elimination, while Castelletti scores the winner in extra time

Snestar finally finds itself in a difficult situation in the Round of 16, after finding itself down two goals to Dēmos in the first half. Things were looking dire for the Viola, but after managing to secure a draw and continue the game to extra time, Snestar managed to overcome the pressure and score the winning goal minutes before penalties, advancing to the Quarterfinals to face Bonusia in Banija.

At the start of the match, the Snestaryan national team found itself in a difficult situation, not being able to completely hold the Dēmosians away from their goal. In the first few minutes, Calvaresi managed to save a couple dangerous shots from Rafail Paleas, also known as the Spanish Salamander, until they finally conceded a goal in the 7th minute, when a header by Whyatou hit the crossbar and immediately bounced back into Cavaliere's thigh, bringing the ball to the corner of the net. For Snestar, it was the first time in the entire tournament where they were down one goal, so the players' performances faltered heavily. Snestar struggled to counterattack and spent most of the first 45 minutes of the match shut down in its own half, trying to prevent any more goals. A spiral of hope came when a counterattack brought Sjölund very close to scoring, but moments before he prepared the shot, he was promptly stopped by the Dēmosian defense. Moments before halftime, Snestar conceded another goal, this time from a spectacular volley by Rafail Paleas that left Calvaresi no chance, making the score 2-0 for Dēmos.

In the second half, Camilla Arentas completely changed the team: she subbed in Castelletti and Marchesi for Acanfora and de Roux, transitioning the formation into a heavily offensive 4-2-4; after all, if they didn't score at least two goals, they would've been out of the tournament. Everyone was nervous: Camilla Arentas got herself another yellow card for excessive protests, and then Balestri and Garnati got some too. Thankfully, the breakthrough finally happened in the 64th minute, when Fabio de Filippi gloriously flew through Tyolius and planted the ball into the net with a powerful goal. This struck confidence into the Snestaryans, causing them to dominate the rest of the match. Sjölund and de Martino created many chances, thanks to masterful passes by the defenders, and play became more fast-paced despite the opponents trying to park the bus. But the equalizer wasn't coming. Minutes passed, and Camilla Arentas was starting to prepare herself for elimination... But then, in the 82nd minute, a cross into the Snestaryan penalty area was deflected by Garnati, bringing the ball right into Scognamiglio's feet. He started running with all the strength he had left: he had caught Whyatou and Tyolius off-guard, and he was directed straight to the goal. By the time the Dēmosian caught up to him, he had already secured the goal. Snestar kept pushing and ended up sending the match to extra time with a 2-2 scoreline.

After the brief pause, Camilla Arentas sent more fresh players to reduce fatigue on the team: Maritan for Gallerani and Furnari for Scognamiglio. When extra time started, both teams were too tired to attempt to score the winner. But Snestar didn't give up just yet; they didn't want to decide the result on penalties. So the attack continued for another half an hour, although the Viola also risked conceding a few times. Thankfully, Calvaresi showed the world why he was given the captain's armband, maintaining the concentration and making no mistakes until the final whistle. Then finally, in the 117th minute, a free kick was awarded to Snestar after a foul on Marchesi. Despite the protests from his teammates, Castelletti insisted on taking the responsibility. He stared at the two Dēmosians making up the barrier in front of him; he took a few steps back... And shot a spectacularly curved free kick worthy of a Puskás award. The entire Snestaryan bench stormed the pitch, as Castelletti celebrated his goal by sliding in front of the Snestaryan fans... A few minutes later, and the triple whistle echoed through the stadium. Snestar had officially qualified for the quarterfinals.

After the final whistle, we interviewed head coach Camilla Arentas once again to hear her thoughts on the match. She was quite shaken by the win, though at the same time she tried to keep herself composed.

“When Snestar went down two goals, I genuinely thought it was over. It was the first time the boys needed to face a losing situation under my guidance, so I did not really know what to do. During halftime, I could not say much to them: they weren't playing horribly, but the pressure was seriously overwhelming. So I chose to do the most logical thing possible: I simply told them, “Forty-five minutes is a lot of time. So get out there and play some damn football!” Honestly, I was surprised how well it worked. At the time, I thought they were just stupid words that only served to alleviate the pain, but it somehow brought the boys' confidence back there. Despite the mistakes, the own goal, and the yellow cards, I can firmly say I am proud of what the boys did tonight. I’m not going to celebrate much, but that’s just some kind of ritual of mine. After all, we only won the Round of 16, am I right?”

Meanwhile, in the Snestaryan training facilities…

While Camilla Arentas was busy preparing herself mentally for the next match against Bonusia, the boys were celebrating the win against Dēmos a bit too heavily… They had set up a big table full of chips, beverages, and other salty delights while blasting heavy bass-boosted music. “Ragazzi!” Leonardo de Martino shouted, gaining everyone’s attention. “Non so se avete capito… MA SIAMO AI QUARTI DI FINALE!”
(Translation: Guys! I don’t know if you understood… but we’re in the quarterfinals!)

The party went on for hours, and the whole team agreed that it was one of the best team-bonding experiences ever, also thanks to Elisa Baldriga sneaking in to have some fun with them. They sang dozens of football chants and even had a karaoke competition at one point (unsurprisingly, Riccardo Cavaliere won by a landslide). After 1:00 AM, Camilla Arentas had to walk downstairs to get her players to go to sleep. “I know you’re excited, but please get some sleep. We can’t win the quarterfinals if you keep goofing around.” The boys then proceeded to mock her for several minutes before ultimately obeying her order and cleaning up the improvised party.

The Makanada Islands are not quite the most Bonusian vegueria in Bonusia. One could certainly say that The Makanada Islands are, in fact the least Bonusian vegueria in Bonusia. Their adhesion to the Confederation of Bonusia, although pacific, was a long and confusing process, and only driven by economical interests; mostly trade with the arrived earthlings. However, the Makanadies are very private and kept to themselves, and they show both a great pride in their culture, their traditions and their islands, and a directly proportional repudiation of anything that they deem "peninsular impositions". Most of them don't even vote in national elections, nor acknowledge neither the earthling-elected president nor the head of Kekla as rulers of their land, but instead their bow to their great chief, who by administrative means is the head of the vegueria of Makanada.

Obviously, in this region, the BoF and the national team of Bonusia are not relevant in the slighlest. The only football they watch (and in fact the only time when they care about the rest of Bonusia, really) is whenever Independent d'Atriu plays in the league. Any mention of the BoF or about the Bonusian NT in this region will be met with indifference, disdain and the usual "Call me when there's a Makanadi national team".

Times are slowly changing, though, and while the old still have strong prejudices about non-Makanadis, amongst the youth of the islands there's an emerging cultural moment promoting openness. They wonder why is it that they reject the notion of Bonusia? They want to explore outside their home archipelago, to see all their country had to offer, and they felt that Makanada would be better off if it interacted more with the rest of the country. After all, if we're Bonusians, why be ashamed of it? And the same happened with the BoF and the Bonusian squad. As stated before, in the islands, most didn't watch it at all. A minority watched only to see if the damn Bonusians would finally lose. But as the squad progressed, match after match, the curiosity got the best out of them youngsters, and they ended up following the Black Star's periple.

The first people to follow the team, following the trend, were two young llimanians, and they did so since the very first match of the tournament. So, let's travel to the north of the Gemakanada Island, which is the main island of the Makanadi Archipelago. Between clean green prairies and a perennially clouded sky lies a beautiful cottage. In it lives a simple, down to earth Makanadi family, consisting of a single father and his three kids. The two younger ones, 13 and 6 years old, sit on the floor, the youngest perhaps too close to their old thick TV, awaiting for the match between Hanalia and Bonusia to begin.

Image
- Welcome and good evening, Llimanians and Earthlings! We're live from Keystone Stadium, from Sisonke, from the great nation of Banija, ready for this exciting Quarterfinal matchup! Speaking it's your favourite host, Oloman Mala, and next to me, as usual, the best Keklan I know, Maria Joana Tou!

- Thanks, Oloman! Are you nervous for today's game?

- How could I not, Maria? This is pretty much the hardest and most important game Bonusia has played to date. In front of us, we have none less than one of the main favourites to lift the present Baptism of Fire, the national squad of Hanalia! To give you an idea, to get here they reversed the result we got against coercia, defeating them by 4-2 to get to the quarter finals Certainly not an easy match. However, one thing must be said, this Bonusian squad has certainly surprised us for the good.

- Yeah, the first friendlies before the Baptism of Fire were certainly hard for the Space Labubus. But since the tournament started, the team finally found the formula, it seems.

- In such a way! Bonusia soared through group 8. Seeberg was a hard match, but the other two teams in it were taken aback by Bonusia's attacking might. Specially overwhelming was Bonusia's win against Nova Dackians by seven goals to null. What a blast!

- Of course, not everything was easy. After coach Xavier Boquete and player Jofre Ramon were preemptively quarantined in Lwanga, Bonusia played a terrible first half against the Ferrets that put them 0-2 down. Even then, when it seemed that Bonusia was knocked out, they played a brilliant second part and ended up winning the game!

- I don't know what Medina told them at half time, but it sure as hell worked, Maria! And after Boquete and Ramon came back, Europeasia was not really a challenge, as they put another 7 goals past them...

- Dad! It's time for the game!

- I hope Sílvia plays! She'll take the goal and she'll stop all the shots from those bad Hanalians! :lol2:

- You both are watching this damn Bonusia again?! For the chief's sake, we're Makanadis, not Bonusians!

- But dad, what if Sílvia gets to play finally?

- She can play all she wants in Atriu, but not for those damn Peninsulars! I told her a million times not to go, but she didn't listen...

- Dad, it's not the same playing for Atriu for our people only than playing for Bonusia. If she plays, the whole world will watch her!

- Hmph...

Image
- The game is about to start, Hanalia and Bonusia jump to the field! Here's the team that our manager will go up with for today's match:

Image

- It's a pretty daring eleven from Boquete today, making some interesting rotations, don't you think?

- The addition of Rojo is what's most shocking to me, Oloman. In a match like this, I would have thought that Boquete would prefer a more controlled attack method that grants consistent opportunities to goal scorers, and we know that Rojo is a player better suited to bring chaos to the game, more than order.

- Well, this is not any rival, Maria. I'm sure Boquete knows what he's doing with this.

- Hope you're right Oloman. One way or another, we'll know soon...

- She goes, and all for what, so she doesn't even get to be on the pitch?! Instead, they of course always put their pampered Kynetboan player so these damn city boys from the continent don't complain!

- Daddy, why our sister doesn't play? :(

- Because the Bonusians are bad and they hate us, because we are not like them. That's it.

- That's not true! Sílvia told me that other Bonusians are nice!

- Don't talk back to me! You know, instead of wasting your time, you could do something more productive, like helping me feed the cattle.

- Dad! Always the same! Let me watch the game for once! I always help you with the cattle.

- No, the cattle is more important than this game.

- Come on! Please, I promise that on the half time I will help you. I will even clean Little Petúnia's shit!

- Speak well, son!

- Yeah, sorry dad...

- Okay, you can watch, but in 45 minutes I want you on the ranch. Am I clear?

- Yes! Thanks dad!

- Hmph.
...
Image
- ...and what a blunt by Cloquell now, she misses the pass, it's going to be an own goal... No, Rojo saves it on the line! And what is she doing, goodness me! She keeps running with the ball! The Hanalians were definitevly not expecting her! Rojo runs, she crosses the halfway line, she runs from one, she runs from two, Rojo outside of the box, oh my she shoots!... WHAT A GOAL. GOOOOOOOOOOOOL GOLGOLGOLGOLGOLGOLGOLGOLGOL. I GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLL DE BONÚSIA! Francesca Rrrrrrrrrojoooooooo! Boquete knew what he was doing! Boquete knew what he was doing! I don't know how, I don't know when, but what a goal Francesca has comed up with! Bonusia takes the lead! She celebrates with the Bonusians that came to the stadium, she throws herself at them! 22nd minute of the game; Hanalia 0, Bonusia 1!

- GOOOAL!

- Wow! She runs as fast as a sheep!

- Sheeps do not run that fast, Martineta.

- How not? When Rocky chases them, they sure run! :eyebrow:

- Hahahahah, you're a dummy!

- Hey! Don't make fun of me!...

- Heheh, sorry sorry.

As the kids celebrated inside, their dad, Josep Maria, heard them cheer from the small ranch they owned. He was trying so hard, really! Why his kids were so enchanted by the damn siren chants of the Peninsulars? He felt like he was failing as a father, for not managing to inculcate good old Makanadi values into the three of them. Now, he had his oldest playing for the national team of Bonusia, and the middle one chanting their goals! The younger one was different, he had more time with her...

He knew that they were good kids, at the end of the day. But today's youth are not as rooted as they were in his time. Now they were attracted to the new, to different, to dynamism. Some of his friends had the same problem with their kids. It's his job as a dad that they don't forget who they are, to be faithful to their true essence, as their are, before anything!

- Everything would be easier with you, Marta... If only you were here...

- Hey dad!

- O-oh, hey son! Are they on halftime?

- Yes!

- Okay, good. Now you can do what you told me before, and start cleaning!

- Okay...

- Hey dad, why do you say that Bonusians are bad?

- Why? Because they want to erase who we are, our identity! They want us to turn into Bonusians, but we aren't. We are Makanadis, and you always have to remember that, son.

- But like, can't you be Makanadi and Bonusian at the same time?... I would like to do that.

- It's not possible. In the end, the Bonusian you will eat the Makanadi being you away. You have to protect your roots, like all those that came before you did.

-... I don't know if I want that?

- How not? Do you want to see your nation perish? You don't love the islands?

- It's not that! Ughh, you just don't understand!

- How do you want me to understand that my Makadani son prefers the peninsular impositions to his true essence?! It's bollocks!

- Uughh, just let it go, dad!´

...

And so they worked in silence. Thing must be said, his little Pere cleaned like a true pro. At least in that, he taught him well...

- You know what, Pere? You did a good job, so inside, watch the game. I'll take it from here.

- Wow really? Thanks, you're the best!

"Heh, if only that was true..." he thought to himself, as he returned to his labor.
...
Image
- The game is right now in a stalemate, neither team seems to attack perilously, perhaps Hanalia had the better chances, but nothing that put the Bonusian goal on threat... The Hanalians are on the ball now, it's Daniel Lin on the ball, he puts a cross into the area, but Bruch will get to it easily... What is she doing, Anna's going for it aswell!... Oh and they collide! Dio kicks the ball out! What's up with Cloquell today?

- She's definitively not focused totally in the game today, that's for sure... Oh wait, seems like she's hurt.

- Most people couldn't handle a full on crash against Bruch... Yeah, it seems like she won't be able to continue.

- Hard blow for Bonusia now! Boquete asks for the substitution, in the place of Cloquell will enter, for the first time in the tournament, the Makanadi goalkeeper Sílvia Ferrer. Let's see if she can handle the pressure.

- DAD! Come on in, run!

- What's going on, what's with all the noise?

- Sílvia is going to play!

- What, really?

- YES! You need to come see her!!

- Yaayy my sis is playing!!

- I need to finish cleaning all this.

- You can do that later dad! Sílvia's on the big TV!

He relucted, but in the end he went. He doesn't care all that about Bonusia, that's for sure, but her daughter was playing, and he always supported her, no matter what.
...
Image
- The Hanalians are now pressing for the goal! It seems they will try to exploit the lack of accomodation of the Bonusian reserve to try and score! They are shooting relentlessly. Ferrer holds her ground, but she's having a hard time.

- You can see that the Bonusian defenders are pretty tired aswell. It seems like Boquete will need to move the bench as soon as possible... Oh, what a pass from Monroe, and Nelson breaks the Bonusian defense line, it's going to be a 1v1, Ferrer against Nelson, Nelson shoots... And what a save! The shot was good, but Ferrer gave him no chance! The stonewall that we saw last season in Atriu has arrived at Banija! Incredible save from Ferrer, that allows Bonusia to keep the advantage!

- Wow!

- Sílvia is the best!!!

Josep Maria felt a strange feeling. He was starting to process what all his daughter was doing meant. Perhaps his middle son was right, this was no Sunday game between Atriu and the usual Peninsulars. This was the global stage, and people all over every world we know were watching this specific match, and they saw their daughter show her true worth, what was she capable of. He couldn't grasp the magnitude of it. So, instead, he just clapped and went on with it.
...
Image
- We're approximating the 90th minute. Bonusia is still winning one null against Hanalia, thanks to that early goal from Rojo. But the Black Star is suffering now. The Hanalians are insisting, searching for that goal that might give them an opportunity to take the game to extra time. Sílvia is earning some credit, all might be said. What a match she's putting!... Now Hanalia is on the ball, it's Guy, he puts it towards McGee. McGee puts it forward, to Preston, Preston for Nelson, Kirsten Nelson is inside the area... Gonfaus tackles her... And the referee gives a penalty. It's a penalty for Hanalia...

- Nothing to say here, it's a clear penalty, I don't know what Gonfaus was thinking about... He must pray for Sílvia to save it, or else he's going to have a bad time.

- Oh no! Sílvia you must save it!

- Go tata! Make the big rock mountain!

- Eh...

What to say. It's Bonusia, after all. And every good Makadan shouldn't support a Bonusian win. But seeing her daughter there, concentrated, make him doubt. Maybe, in the end, he wanted her to save it.

Image
- Nelson's already on the penalty spot. In front of her, Sílvia Ferrer, who looks at her seriously, observant. Nelson gets some space to get momentum... And the referee whistles! Nelson goes, she shoots. AND SÍLVIA SAVES IT, OH MY GOD, SÍLVIA SAVES IT!

- SÍLVIA I LOVE YOU, SÍLVIA I LOVE YOU!

- SÍLVIA WE LOVE YOU! ALL BONUSIA LOVES YOU!...

- YEEESSS GO SÍLVIA!

- YIIPIIE! I have the best sister in the world! 8)

- GOO SISI! THAT'S MY DAUGHTER!

- Not even you could hold it, eh dad?

- Hmph, don't disrespect me kid!...

- Hahahah, sorry sorry.

His son was right. Was he celebrating... Bonusia going through? No, it was not that. He wondered about it... Is this why his kids wanted to see the games so bad? Gosh, had he been dumb...
...
Image
- And there's the final whistle! Bonusia endures! Hanalia put our squad against the corner, but no one said that the path to the top was going to be easy! The Bonusians will play in the quarter finals against the national team of Snestar! Now we'll connect with our sideline reporter, that has got the chance to speak with the MVP, the goalkeeper Sílvia Ferrer.

- Look, they're going to interview her!

- I'm sure she will be quick, she doesn't like to talk much...

Image

- We're here with Sílvia Ferrer. Hi Sílvia, spectacular game today. How are you feeling?

- Well, I'm happy to be able to prove myself. The team is happy with the win aswell.

- You'll play Snestar next, most likely you'll start that game. How do you feel about Snestar?

- Well, they must be good, no team is easy so we'll be wary. They speak weird though.

- Uh, okay... anything more you want to say.

- I want to dedicate this victory to all Bonusians, but specially to all Makanadis. To my people, my land and my team, this is for you. Thanks to the people that helped me be here.

- Okay, that was really beautiful! Anything else you wanna share?

- No, thanks. Goodbye.

- Thanks Sílvia, enjoy the win!

- And those are the words by Sílvia Ferrer, the Makanadi keeper. A woman of few words, for what we've seen.

- Hahaha! Indeed, Oloman, she is straightforward off the pitch aswell!

"For all Bonusians and for all Makanadans"... Josep Maria was starting to get their kids view. Slow but steady.

- "They speak weird" Hahahahah oh I'm going to tease her so much with that!

- Be mannered, Pere!... Listen kids, today, to celebrate your sister's win, we'll make the good meat, okay? Then when she's at the hotel, we'll call her.

- Yessss, the good meat! But I want ice cream aswell...

- Okay, Martineta, we'll have ice cream aswell.

- Yaaaayyy

Josep Maria smiled. Perhaps he did raise them all right, after all.

Konstantino 1-3 Shin-Zetsubo
From La Gran Avenida, Farolera, Farfadillis

Stacee Carsons '3 (SHZ)
Yuri Teobaldo '49 (Konstantino)
Jocelin Lyon '79 '83 (SHZ)

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have just arrived at Gonzaga International Airport, and it is pleased for me to say... Welcome to Banija."

At last, it was a change in scenery for Shin-Zetsubo. Instead of the general despair that made the team thrive in Farfadillis on their way through this aptly named Baptism, Banija was a land unlike anything they had seen. After all, before this tournament, the thirty-four members of this squad didn't dare to venture outside of their borders. It was only to be a brief stopover for the Quarters, but this trip to the capital of Banija was surely one to remember.

The bus only got to the airport a couple minutes late (a relief to Freida Vernon), and it was unlike anything they had ever seen. Clean, sleek, absolutely stunning, with the flag of their homeland right at the door. It was just like what most nations would find at international tournaments, but Shin-Zetsubo's busses back in Farfadillis were, to put it mildly, looking like they could break down at any minute. Just the way the team liked it. For despair, obviously. Once the door opened, the team filed straight in, taking their seats within the vehicle for an oddly smooth ride to the hotel.

There was one problem - The hotel was a good hour away from the airport. It was the team's decision, after all, since the despair of having to be far away from the stadium was what they were going for in a world where hope was a bit more dominant... Turns out on long rides the easiest way to pass time was to just goof around, as Babe Glazier did when she said the most famous words in Shin-Zetsubo:

"Puhuhuhu~"

Stacee Carsons picked it up right away, echoing Glazier with a "Puhuhuhu" of her own. Then another player said it. Then two more. Emoran herself got in on the despair. The giggle could be heard all over the bus, while thankfully not leaking outside of the road. A constant flurry of despair that only came in one word, with every mile pulled by the bus adding onto the calamity.

"Puhuhuhu" this, "Puhuhuhu" that, "Puhuhuhu" everywhere, eventually the bus had to stop at the hotel. Emoran stood up, the manager that she was, and scanned her eyes on the giggling players.

"If you all despair like that at Restoration, you'll be in preeeetty good hands. Exemplary hands if I say so myself. Now let's get some rest, girls."

There was some giggling from the team as they left the bus and headed to their hotel rooms, but not as much as it was on that bus. If anything the driver was relieved that they didn't have to hear those crazy girls for another hour. But all eyes were on the Quarters after all, and Bhumi Matawis Empire were the biggest test yet. Win and they were guaranteed a top 4 finish, despair for everybody! Lose and it's a top 8 and the despair of not reaching Farfadillis again. No pressure, right?

Glazier's dream wasn't about pressure at all, of course. She was on the pitch against the White Tiger Team inside of a 100,000+ capacity stadium, the biggest stage she had ever been on. When she got the ball on her feet, it didn't make a familiar ball noise. It just went... "Puhuhuhu~!" She squeed. Giggly despair in a football? The most despairful despair to ever despair!! With each touch the noise reverberated, another taunt that confused the opposition. Before she knew it, Putu Sumadiyasa was staring her down. Glazier struck the ball with all her despairful might...

...Then she woke up. 6 AM sharp. Time for training, of course. The big match was tomorrow. All she could do was let out another "Puhuhuhu"... And move on. Sometimes doing a job was more important than a despairful giggle.

Quarterfinals, Equestrian & Farf Sections Cutoff

A slightly earlier cutoff today as all teams in my section have already RPed. I'll also be handling Farf's section today as he's unavailable to score.

Your teams and fans have likely been wandering a fair bit across southwestern Arrosia if they're still around at this point. Scores up momentarily.

Optional RP Prompt: The winners of today's matches will be playing for medals regardless of the outcome of their semifinals, either in the third place playoff or the final. While your players likely haven't won any prior hardware at the international level, have they had success at their domestic clubs or is this the first time that they're this close to glory? How are your teams and fans reacting to the growing prospect of multiversal renown for winning a competition like the Baptism of Fire?

Host Announcement: Both semifinals will be held in Farfadillis but will be scorinated by Banija. Looking forward, the 3rd Place Playoff will be held in and also scorinated by Banija. The Final will be held in and scorinated by Equestria.

Farfadillis - Matchtime

"AHAHAHAHAHAAAAHHAAAAA!"

"FOOOOOR SUUUUUUPER EAAAAAARTH!"

"HOW'D YOU LIKE A TASTE OF FREEDOM?"

"GET SOME! GET SOOOOOME!"

Super Earth intelligence had suggested that the Rianderans were known for their use of motivational chants. As such, the Senators were instructed to pre-emptively retaliate with inspiring Helldiver quotations themselves. Unfortunately, this mostly devolved into barely-coherent maniacal laughter and near-reflexive slogans shouted at the tops of their lungs, the same kind of insanity that often befell Helldivers in the field. Fortunately, it was a highly effective coping mechanism. The same pleas to liberty that allowed them to shrug off claw wounds to the leg and rockets to the chest now allowed them to run rampant across the freedomball field. It even allowed them to shrug off the odd sense of familiarity they felt seeing an opposing team use similar colours to the SEAF.

Undoubtedly the Rianderans were more experienced in the world of sports. They had participated in international tournaments before- Super Earth had only bothered recognising the existence of foreign nations at the beginning of this expedition, and only out of practical necessity. The Rafflesias were a talented team quite capable of mild aggression, motivated and with good reason to have confidence. When Senator discipline fell and their unbridled recklessness left weaknesses, the Rafflesias capitalised with exceptional momentum.

But these bursts of momentum just were not enough.

Deadman- restored to the field- justified his inclusion time after time with relentless assaults through cluttered territory. Chop and Wader swam through formations as they ever did, often able to overpower the Rafflesias to secure the ball for themselves before the Rianderans could even make a move. Despite some lapses here and there- including two utter travesties inflicted by Lagrange's oddly-poor precision this game, one of which led easily to a Rianderan goal- the Senators were firmly in control of the game. The Rafflesias just could not be everywhere at once, and wherever their formation wavered a former Helldiver stormed the opening and broke through.

By the end of the match, it was a 7-2 victory for the Super Earth Senators.

Time after time, the team had triumphed over adversity. Time after time, their belief in a victorious destiny had shifted more and more from a propagandistic delusion to a seeming inevitability. Lady Liberty smiled upon them and they repaid her with their courage and dedication.

Would every last star truly see freedom reign on the freedomball field after all?

Farfadillis - Forward Operating Base

Kicker leapt into the pile of spent shell cases that had built up around the operating base and started making bullet angels. It was a habit he'd developed when assaulting Automaton orbital cannons and waiting for the hellbombs that would demolish them to go off. It had been during one of those occasions he'd earned his nickname. An enemy War Strider had approached and fired its typical barrage of grenades, and he'd been forced to kick a good four of them away before they could end his recreation and life alike.

And now he was here.

Still missing the dust of Mars that those nefarious squids had scorched to a crisp.

Farfadillis wasn't a battlefield, no matter how many napalm rockets they donated at speed to the local wildlife. And maybe that was for the best. He'd always imagined the adoration of the citizens when he fought. How every scrapped bot, squashed bug and skewered squid inspired the masses to ever-greater feats of heroism and determination. But it had been a broad adoration, hadn't it? A general longing to imagine the Helldivers as champions of the Federation. Their names on the Wall of Martyrs were just set dressing to all but a few. There weren't enough years in the human lifespan to even read every name that had been etched into it by now, and that accounted for Helldivers alone. Five billion tragedies in the background to motivate the rest.

Now his name was known. Not his real one, but this was just as good. Better even. He was someone that mattered not just in concept but on an individual level to the entire Federation. If they won, parades would be held in their honour. They would be immortal. Forever-enduring heroes of a sporting war. And all their names would live on. Few enough to read. To give credit. To mean something to anyone but himself.

...he'd never realised before, what a difference that made.

Only one squad can finish on top and be crowned the champions. As for the rest of them, Margaret looks away, at one point of another. Now it had been the time for the Bonusians to lose her favour. Snestar got the hang of the Black Star from the beginning of the game, and didn't let them operate in their usual fashion until that point, thus dominating from start to end. Only Morad could embellish a very harsh defeat, given how the Bonusians were faring until that moment. A 4-1 result that sealed the nation's fate.

It was not a result to be ashamed of, of course. The national team got as far as to the top 8 in their first ever real tournament appearance. And it was not the last tournament they would partake in, that's for sure. Next season, the World Cup Qualifiers would start. And yeah, most likely Bonusia would get out of it, but sure as hell they will give the big nations a run for their money.

But despite this, a deep, faint feeling of dissapointment invaded the hearts of most Bonusians, who, deep down, they were imagining themselves celebrating the title. In every city, town and village, hope and excitedment was replaced by apathy. For a good example, wo could go somewhere in Northern Ralí and recheck Bar Manel.

Image
- And the referee blows the whistle... Bonusia is going home, after a complicated match in which Snestar dominated the whole game. A 4-1 defeat that feels sour after the great games the players got us used to. Bruch can't hold her tears, she know's that she won't get to play that many more tournaments after this one...

*zzip*

- I think that's enough for today.- Proclaimed Manel, the owner, as he shut down the TV. It was a wise decision. Most people had already left, and those who were still there weren't interested in the "experts" post-game chit-chat. - Surprised you both stayed until the end, though.

- You know Manel, in no time we're both getting back to work.We figured that if we went out anyway, we should make it count.

- Absolutely. It's a bum that we lost though... What they were doing today?!

- No use getting mad over it, Geri. Life goes on.

- You're right, Vic...

- Hey fellas, if you want to make it count, i'll wait a little to close the bar and we can have some beers. The house pays.

- Ooh wow, thanks a lot my friend!

- Better to finish on a good note, don't you think?

-Absolutely!

In the almost empty Bar Manel, Gerard wondered how different that same bar would have looked if their team won today... "How can such a small thing as a football game condition the lives of so many people everywhere?" He thought, as he kept chugging his beer. He didn't try to answer, though. Some questions are better left like that. So, instead, he just had another sip of beer...

Snestar comfortably defeats Bonusia in a thrilling 4-1 victory: the Viola proudly advances to the semifinals of the Baptism of Fire

With a dominant 4-1 win in the quarterfinals against Bonusia, Snestar proceeds further into the competition into the semifinals, as the Viola triumphs at the Star Field in Banija. The national team is now two steps away from achieving history, and fans all over the country are starting to genuinely believe that the chances are high.

Right from the start, it was clear that Snestar was going to dominate the entire game. Despite Leonardo de Martino’s early substitution for Tero Sjölund in the 5th minute due to a muscle strain, Snestar kept the pressure high, eventually finding the net in the 12th minute thanks to a volley by left-back Cavaliere, who went off its intended trajectory and hit the post and landed right in front of Sjölund, who then quickly secured the goal with a simple tap-in. The Viola then proceeded to relentlessly attack the Bonusian defense, as well as preventing most counter-attacks thanks to Scognamiglio’s experience and Balestri’s strong physical presence. Towards the end of the first half, Bonusia came close to equalizing, as forward Aitor Cea caught Maritan and Balestri off guard and found himself in front of Calvaresi. Thankfully, Calvaresi was able to close the space enough for Cea to miss, letting Snestar return to the changing room with a 1-0 advantage.

Camilla Arentas, however, was not satisfied, so before the start of the second half she switched to a 4-2-4 formation, subbing Martinelli for Ragusa, and Scanavino for Marchesi for a more offensive approach. And it immediately paid off: in the 48th minute, a corner by Martin de Roux ended up being lunged into the Bonusian goal thanks to a spectacular bicycle kick by Riccardo Cavaliere, who had been putting on an impressive show at Star Field so far. Then, 20 minutes later, Martinelli scored the third goal with another quick tap-in after he was able to sneak through Bruch and Rojo and surprise the keeper. Shortly after that, in the 74th minute, Daniele Cantu finished the onslaught with a fast, ground-hugging shot. Despite everything, though, Snestar still conceded one goal, when in the 81st minute Yonatan Morad slipped through Peruffo, dribbled his way inside of the penalty box, and wrong-footed Federico Calvaresi to secure the goal. Still, the Bonusian team was too far behind to score three goals back in 10 minutes, and the match eventually ended with a 4-1 score line for Snestar.

After the final whistle, we interviewed head coach Camilla Arentas to hear her thoughts on the match. She was relieved by the victory, though she also seemed quite spooked throughout the press conference.

“I never thought I would find myself face to face with an alien. I have seen many movies about them, ‘cause who hasn’t, but seeing the real thing with my own eyes… That honestly scared me. During the first half, the ball got out of play and I went to hand it to a Bonusian player. I think his name was Formiga or something… Still, that thing looked at me dead in the eye, with his own bright red pupil. I genuinely thought that some kind of deadly beam beyond my comprehension would have come out of his lightning rod shaped head and blast me with unstoppable energy… Anyway, uhh… We won. Good job, Snestar.”

What greeted the team on at the arrivals terminal on their return to Farfadillis wasn't silence. It wasn't a barrage of cameras either. Nor was it a bunch of tourists from other nations trying to get a glimpse of football's future and scratching their heads at thirty-four identical looking women who all loved despair.

"DESPAIRRRRRRRR~! PUHUHUHU~!!!"

It was a crowd of their own citizens. Miraculously enough, ever since that first match broadcast on television in the country, the entire nation of Shin-Zetsubo discovered the wonderful despair of Farfadillis for themselves. Of course at first it was just a couple of articles on the web that just so happened to load for them, but as the team were away in Banija ready to pump the brakes off of another nation's once in a lifetime chance, things at home and in the Arrosian country changed. For the first time, the Towa City International Airport actually got to moving on a semi-regular basis, transporting Shin-Zetsubites from the capital of their country to the state of Ferdullaele - Oddly enough, where their semi-final would be played. 8 flights total, 840 Shin-Zetsubites in the crowd... That meant 8 105 seater jets made the voyage at absolutely full capacity, all because their nation was playing Despairing Soccer.

Hugs were had, despairful poses were struck, a sense of comradery in despair was afoot inside the airport in the middle of a quite-familiar area of anarchy that wasn't their own. Nobody in their right mind expected them to get this far of course - Every pundit (at least 3) said if they somehow beat Tristan, they would go as far as the Quarters. Now they were in the last 4 - One game away from the ultimate prize being in their sights in the mystical city of Canterlot, Equestria.

Even Dianna Sayaka and Yves Quarrington, the two DespairTimeTV presenters, were there just to interview the national team as they hung out in the airport. Flurries of questions were thrown about to every member. Allsopp was asked about her tempers and how they cost her many a Starting XI berth early in the run. Anna Willows answered to her question about what she'd do if she wasn't a goalkeeper was "Honestly, it would be more fun if I acted like a goalie if I wasn't a goalie." Chrystill Emoran, of course, got the hardest questions as the manager. How she knew when the players would go positionless, the pressure of managing four straight knockout matches with a fifth on the horizon, and the big one itself.

"Do you think we have the despair to make it all the way and WIN the Baptism of Fire~?" asked Quarrington, her excitement multiplying as she got to the last words.

"...I don't know, but there's going to be despair no matter what. Snestar look very good and facing them in the Semis is our biggest test yet. Choppyhausen are also scary. But there's something about... Super Earth, yes? I've heard them dive in whilst we were training for the past knockout games in Farfadillis. I've seen their highlights, how they play as an army that aren't afraid to risk it all. Like us. They have the best chance of winning this competition. I think best case scenario, we despair at the last hurdle against them, and it's going to be more despairful than winning it all."

For the first time arguably since the first group game, Shin-Zetsubo didn't see themselves with a chance of winning. They had come so far, from girls who didn't understand the sport to one of if not the most entertaining team to watch throughout this journey. And yet, looking at the final four, they were back to seemingly the start - A squad who weren't expected to go much farther. Emoran admitted that the trophy was locked up for another team, and that her own side coming out on top... Was out of the question. A fresh coat of despair had been applied on this run.

With the interviews wrapped up, with the tourists walking out of the airport with the squad, it was back to work for the team. As always, the squad were put up against each other, with Emoran on the sidelines trying to figure out who would be on that starting formation come the Snestar match at the old, worn down shrine to Farf football, La Snerra. This time, of course, there was an expiration date. If they despaired over Snestar and reached the Final, even she expected the miracle run to be over, at the hands of Choppyhausen or, most likely, the Senators of Super Earth. She stayed up late at night the day before the match trying to see out that starting XI, when it all clicked amongst the internal soundtrack of giggles, ball kicks, diners, drive-ins and, of course, dives.

When the team arrived at the old locker room inside the stadium, Emoran didn't say a word as she usually would. Instead, the roster was right there for them, written on a piece of paper stapled to the locker belonging to Anna Willows.

Willows
Palmer-Lynton-Ramsey-Eccleston
Steed-Nash-Yong-Good-St. John
Parson

Subs
Everybody Else
Priority to Scarlett, Johnson, Glazier, Walter, Allsopp, Colt and Dwerryhouse

Prepare to despair,
CE

Blunt and to the point. There were four now, of course. The only question now was simple - Would they despair to 2nd place, or would they have to fight for a medal entirely? As the squad walked out onto the pitch, the same fans from the airport were right behind one of the goals, in bleachers of course, unfurling a small Shin-Zetsubo flag meant just for them. They, at last, had some support. They'd need all the support they could get in this critical game of Despairing Soccer.

Quarterfinals

Victory over Seeberg

Another 1–0 – Choppyhausen through to the semi-finals

Stalliongrad – So much had changed for Seeberg and Choppyhausen since their last meeting — back in the opening match of the IAC24 group stage. A different competition, a different venue, different weather, more experience, more success, more fans roaring from the stands. And above all, far more at stake this time around.
One thing, though, stayed the same at Diamond Park: the result.

“It’s nice to see familiar faces,” Choppyhausen head coach Harmon Merrit said before kick-off. “Especially faces you already know how to beat.” Early on, though, there was little sign that Choppyhausen still had Seeberg’s number. For long stretches of the first half, it was the “Horkenheimers” who dictated play — and looked far more dangerous in front of goal.

Choppyhausen goalkeeper and captain Weiner-Kracht was forced into action after just two minutes, reacting sharply to snuff out a slick Seeberg attack. And it wouldn’t be the last time: as his outfield teammates struggled to find their rhythm, the keeper was in inspired form, denying Steuermann (8’) and Selig (13’) with crucial saves.

Choppyhausen’s attack, meanwhile, barely registered in the opening period. Around the 20-minute mark, after a cleared corner, they tried to break quickly through Bender-McKay, but Corte miscontrolled the through ball and it trickled harmlessly into Kluge’s arms — a moment that perfectly summed up the team’s first half. At least the defence eventually steadied itself: aside from a spectacular long-range strike by Sohn-Rethel that Weiner-Kracht tipped onto the bar, Seeberg created little else before the break. The match meandered into half-time goalless and unspectacular.

Whatever Merrit said in the dressing room clearly had an effect. Choppyhausen came out after the interval looking sharper and more focused. With Alvarado and Lauritz coming on for the struggling Iduna and Corte, the Team in Teal immediately upped the tempo. Lauritz in particular — who’d already netted twice against Khaelu earlier in the tournament — wasted no time testing Kluge with two early efforts (49’, 52’). The game opened up as Seeberg refused to sit back. Chances came thick and fast at both ends: Lukeson struck the post from a tight angle (56’), Honneth blasted just over at the other end (58’), and then Benjamin flung himself in front of a Keil strike (61’).

Then came the big moment in the 66th minute — but not for Choppyhausen at first. Seeberg thought they’d taken the lead when Löwenthal sparked a lightning counterattack, capped off by Selig, who rounded Weiner-Kracht and slotted home. The Seeberg fans erupted — only for the assistant’s flag to cut celebrations short. The striker was a matter of centimetres offside, but it was enough.

Moments later, Choppyhausen struck for real. Hencke clattered into Alvarado just outside the box, earning a yellow card and giving Choppyhausen a glorious free-kick opportunity. Substitute De Lang stepped up and curled the ball perfectly over the wall and into the top right corner. Kluge had no chance. A stunning goal — and a 1–0 lead.

Seeberg took nearly ten minutes to recover and then threw everything forward in the closing stages. Choppyhausen were pinned back, defending deep, but stood firm. Haferkreis made a crucial block to turn Steuermann’s effort behind for a corner (82’). From that set piece, Kirchheimer headed against the post. Moments later, Lampe slid in brilliantly to deny Fromm after a brilliant solo run (87’).
The final act came from Honneth, but his 19-metre drive was safely held by Weiner-Kracht.

Just like in Saterun, Choppyhausen beat Seeberg 1–0 — and book their place in the semi-finals of the 87th Baptism of Fire, one of just four teams remaining from the original 112. Next stop for the Team in Teal: Farfadillis, where they’ll take on Super Earth.

Sieg gegen Seeberg

Choppyhausens Offensive blieb dahingegen lange Zeit blass.

Baptism of Fire ein.

After Snestar’s 4-1 win over Bonusia, the Viola gets ready to face its biggest challenge yet, as the national teams goes on to face Shin-Zetsubo in the semifinals. As usual, we interviewed head coach Camilla Arentas to hear her thoughts on the upcoming match in Farfadillis.

"Being the head coach of a national team is a tough job. Although this competition has been draining my strength, the results we have achieved clearly tell me I’m doing a good job so far. With that said, I still firmly believe that the Baptism of Fire is a fantastic opportunity to gain some international experience, both for me and for the team. And getting as far as the top four… Should I teach the boys a thing or two about handling a huge swarm of journalists? I remember how much they tormented me when, back in 2022, I won the promotion play-offs with Rimanya and brought the club to Division Alpha for their first time in 50 years. They just wouldn’t let me sleep, man…"

“Why do you play football?”

Before the start of the Baptism of Fire, we interviewed the Snestaryan national team and asked each of them one simple question: “What makes you choose to pursue a career in football?”

“Football is in my family’s blood. Ever since my great-grandmother won the trophy with Merilva, the Arentas surname had become a prestigious surname for Snestaryan football. In my family, most members became pro athletes in one sport, though we’ve had our fair share of average folk: my elder brother is an accountant, while my younger brother is a history teacher. Fate wanted me to continue the family tradition, but I’m sure my parents wouldn’t have cared if I chose a different career.” -- Camilla Arentas

“I play football because I like it. Simple as that. No hidden motives, no ambitions of fame… I happened to like kicking a ball around as a kid, and apparently I was good at it. Honestly, I’m glad that my girlfriend has kept supporting me while I tried to push towards the top. Playing for Lavenya, and for the national team… It’s a dream come true.” -- Riccardo Cavaliere

“Personally, I’m in it for the money, but not in the way that you think. My family has always struggled making ends meet, so now I try to give some of the money I gain to them with every chance I get.” -- Mattia Castelletti

“When I first started out, I wanted to become the very best, like no one ever was. Everyone clowned me for my irrational ambitions, and over time I’ve come to accept that I can’t be the absolute best. Still, I believe that I’ve achieved a “good enough” level.” -- Martin de Roux

Postby Super Earth Under Siege » Sat Oct 18, 2025 8:04 pm

"Welcome to Liberty's Latest. I'm your host, Coretta Kelly. In a shocking display of selfless generosity, the Super Earth Senators deliberately sacrificed their opportunity to pursue the grand final of the multiversal freedomball tournament, the Baptism of Fire. This heartwrenching decision came as a result of concerns over the upcoming Liberty Day celebrations. Sporting Officer Myrom had this to say, quote: "To use up limited pyrotechnics to celebrate our own inevitable victory in the final, in a time of crisis and modesty such as this, was a burden none of us could bear. Our ambitions live on, and we will carry them into the true arena of multiversal freedomball- the upcoming hundredth World Cup." It is suspected that this selfless, prosperity-driven decision was necessitated by the recent invasion of Julheim by the socialist Automatons, which is projected to prevent the successful liberation of the illegally-produced explosives intended for conversion into fireworks and other celebratory measures. All citizens are advised to express their contempt for the menace that undoubtedly made essential the illusion of defeat for the Senators. They will proceed to the third-place playoffs later this week. That's Liberty's Latest, I'm Coretta Kelly."
- Coretta Kelly, Strohmann News broadcast

Ursica XI - Borgus Sector

"Two-two," Kicker grumbled as he crushed a Terminid scavenger beneath his boots.

"Three-three," Fisher mumbled as he shoved the righteous speartip of the One True Flag through a warrior's crested head.

The Senators had been dispatched to the bug-infested world of Ursica XI to cool off after their recent defeat. For some of them it was even working. But for others, the purple grass reminded them of Seyshel Beach, the last place they had trained before this crazy tournament had begun. The Beach had been reclaimed days ago and they'd been busy kicking a ball around. They'd been good at it. They'd pushed far more experienced teams beyond their breaking point. And only now, right before the end, right when it mattered most- had they come short.

By the absolutely narrowest of margins.

Farfadillis - Matchtime

The Super Earth Senators had met their match.

It was a brutal slog of a game. Super Earth had aggression on its side, a full cadre of relentlessly offensive players to storm through opposing formations and stifle any opportunity. Choppyhausen had synchronicity, an ability to weather the storm for minute after minute until they could find a way out and pursue it with technical grace and incredible agility. Chop and Wader struggled to keep up with the way Choppyhausenians passed the ball so precisely. Deadman tried to make up for it with sheer aggression, and at first it worked. Super Earth's old tricks of long-range sniping and sheer brute force seemed on track to win them the game. But as the match wore on, the constantly-accosted frontliners began to lose their stamina. Subsitutions were made, the backbone of the team replaced by secondary players. Endurance was to see them win the day.

Until it wasn't.

Without Chop and Wader's synchronicity, Choppyhausen could get through. Without Teph and Cindy's teamwork, there was no-one able to respond swiftly enough. Without Fisher's ironclad defence, there was a weakness in the goal. Sally did her utmost but the field was turning to chaos. The lesser-known Super Earthers were forced to pull together and it worked! Tropic pulled off miracles. Vigil stopped attack after attack with uncanny peripheral awareness. But there was just not enough left on the attack to turn the game around. Super Earth was not known for a defensive posture and while it stemmed the tide, it killed any chance they had of overcoming the score difference. Matchtime was to be extended.

This had never happened before.

Super Earth was used to overwhelming triumph by now. Not a prolonged siege. The Senators had not prepared for the match to go on even longer. Who would they even send out? In the end, they cobbled together a mixture of worn-out substitutes and the missing centrepieces of the team. Momentum shifted from side to side, the frantic and exhausted Senators left in a frenzied panic. But Helldivers worked best under stress. So much was at stake that they couldn't afford to lose. Assault after assault after assault they launched, brazen and unbreakable. But they overextended time after time. They wanted this over with. They just needed one more goal, one more victory, and they would attend the grand finals.

It was not to be.

An even split.

...penalty shootouts.

And all the dynamite-kicking in the world had not prepared them for something like this. All their long-range power, all their relentless movement through harsh conditions, was utterly wasted on a kicking-forward and ball-catching contest they were not even trained to expect, let alone partake in. They tried their utmost...

And failed.

Ursica XI - Borgus Sector

And now they were stomping bugs. Taking their frustration out on the most straightforward of clusters they could get authorisation to deploy to. Trying to find catharsis in the splattered bile and chipped chitin of their enemies, and failing once again. They still had a deployment ahead of them. The third-place finals. But the truth was that they were utterly demoralised. They had faltered so close to ultimate victory, had put on such a strong game, for what? They didn't even have the satisfaction of a "good job" in the aftermath. The Ministry of Truth, ever unwilling to admit the slightest defeat, had spun a yarn about their "generous sacrifice". There was little generosity left in any of them now.

Third place. Maybe they'd get third place. But so what?

Myrom watched the blips from orbit. Pondering. Wondering. In his eyes, it had all been a dramatic success. When the multiverse thought of Super Earth, they would not think "Failure". They would see a power that had risen from obscurity into dominance, defeated only by a minute margin at the last moment as though fate had feared the ferocity and fury of their ultimate triumph. The Senators would cool down. Those that did not could be replaced. He had decisions to make. Members to take in. Experiments to run.

Wallowing was a waste of the time.

And the real tournament was soon to begin.

Let the glory of fire's baptism be another's. Let the flames be carried by another legend. For a Helldiver, fire was only the beginning of the mission, the transition from orbit to landing zone.

Time for the real operation to commence.

Snestar loses 2-1 to Shin-Zetsubo in a heavily controversial matchup: five red cards for the Viola, an indecorous display for the national team

Snestar is officially out of the Baptism of Fire: the dreams of the Viola were shattered as Shin-Zetsubo edged a heartbreaking 2-1 thanks to an apparently inexistent penalty.
At the start of the match, Snestar dominated the match. The Viola was in control of the pitch and easily dictated where the ball went. It didn’t take long for Tero Sjölund to score a fantastic curved shot and secure an advantage for the Viola, though Shin-Zetsubo had their own chances, but none had managed to get through Calvaresi’s strong hands.

The match was going fairly well for the second half: despite the opponent equalizing in the 60th minute thanks to a free kick by Syd Parson, Snestar was still relatively in control of the match. Things were going well until, in stoppage time, Parson dived inside of the penalty area after an apparent contact with Giulio Maritan. The Snestaryan defender knew he had actually touched the ball, so he immediately asked the referee to review the decision on VAR. And despite this, the penalty was still awarded. The entire Snestaryan national team went ballistic: Garnati and Maritan were expelled, while almost the entire squad was given yellow cards. Shortly after, Camilla Arentas herself got expelled and had to leave the stadium due to excessive protests. In the end, when the triple whistle echoed through the stadium, Snestar initially refused to leave the stadium as a sign of protest against what they allegedly deemed to be corrupt referees, which caused Calvaresi and Ragusa to also get red cards. In the end, when the Viola finally accepted defeat, the Snestaryan fans present in Farfadillis proceeded to applaud them for standing up to injustice.

After the final whistle, we interviewed head coach Camilla Arentas to hear her thoughts on the match. Throughout the press conference, she was absolutely furious.

“I’m going to be short on this: we were robbed. Absolutely. That penalty was not there. Maritan clearly got the ball, and VAR showed it! I’m not saying it ‘cause we lost, the freaking VAR showed that Maritan had its foot touching the ball moments before colliding with Parson! … I can’t with this football. I just can’t. I would’ve been fine if Shin-Zetsubo had won fair and square, but this insane robbery? I’m not mad at our opponents, though. They did play fairly. But I have a problem with referees who aren’t able to do their f***ing job.”

[size=120]Camilla Arentas then proceeded to storm out of the conference, leaving journalists shocked by her sudden rage, which is unfitting for a Snestaryan citizens.

Semifinals

Thrilling semi-final ends in 2–2

“Team in Teal” wins on penalties and reaches the final

Farolera“We know it’s going to be difficult,” said Choppyhausen coach Harmon Merrit before the semi-final against Super Earth. Their brutally efficient attacking game was hard to contain, he explained in a pre-match interview. And he was right — until tonight, no team had managed to beat Super Earth at this tournament. That changed in Farfadillis. Choppyhausen defeated the “Senators” in a semi-final that had everything a neutral could ask for: dazzling passing combinations, brilliant dribbles, high emotion — and goals galore.

From the opening whistle, it was clear this match would be a spectacle. Super Earth, fresh off a 7–2 quarter-final demolition of Riandera, wasted no time asserting themselves. Deadman broke through the Choppyhausen defence within the first minute, only for his powerful shot to crash against the outside of the post.

The contrasting playing philosophies were evident early on. Super Earth relied on aggressive pressing, winning duels and striking quickly — often from distance. A typical Senator move came in the 14th minute when Wader unleashed a fierce shot, but it was too central and Weiner-Kracht saved comfortably. Choppyhausen, meanwhile, leaned on technical finesse and their quick wide men. Their first real chance fell to Iduna in the 17th minute after a perfect through ball from Tyr, but Fisher tipped his shot onto the crossbar.

It was end-to-end football. Lukeson shot selfishly wide (19’), Tyr went close from range (22’), and then Super Earth struck. In the 25th minute, Chop muscled past Lampe, shrugged off Frederiksen and smashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box into the top-right corner. No chance for Weiner-Kracht. 1–0.

The pace didn’t drop. Iduna burst past Lagrange in the 29th minute but his cross narrowly missed Corte. Moments later, Keil and Lukeson carved through the Super Earth defence, only for Fisher to make a big save (33’). At the other end, Chop’s cross was claimed by Weiner-Kracht just before Deadman could head it (36’), Cindy forced the keeper into another stop (38’), and Kicker’s header hit the bar (39’).

Just before the break came a gut punch for Choppyhausen. After a sweeping switch from Wader to Chop, his cross wrong-footed Holdenbeck. Lampe hesitated a fraction too long on the clearance and Deadman pounced, bundling the ball over the line for 2–0 (41’).

Both sides returned unchanged after the break, but the tempo remained relentless. Super Earth brought on Creeper and Lassie soon after, while Choppyhausen grew visibly stronger. In the 55th minute, Cindy brought down the constantly dangerous Keil with a rough challenge. Keil had to come off, replaced by Caligaris, and Cindy saw yellow. From the resulting free-kick, Finch whipped the ball into the box. Four players missed it before Iduna met it at the far post with an awkward drop-kick-volley. It squirmed through Fisher’s legs. 2–1.

Choppyhausen pressed for the equaliser. Two Bender-McKay crosses just missed Lukeson (60’) and Corte (64’), while Tyr struck the crossbar from 22 metres (70’). Just as Super Earth looked to regain control, Choppyhausen struck again. Frederiksen won the ball with a perfectly timed sliding tackle on Buzz, then launched a long ball downfield to Iduna. The winger sprinted to the byline, twisted past Tropic, and sent in a cross that deflected off Vigil and awkwardly into Corte’s path. The striker adjusted brilliantly mid-run and connected with a spinning scissor kick — the ball flew past the keeper and into the net. 2–2. A sensational finish.

The match settled briefly after that flurry. Both sides made changes, taking some pace out of the game. Choppyhausen had a bit more posession control, though Super Earth defended more solidly, with Tropic and Vigil snuffing out several attacks. Only De Lang, on as a sub, went close again, firing just wide in the 86th minute.

After 90 minutes, it was 2–2. For Super Earth, this was uncharted territory — they’d won every match in regular time so far. Choppyhausen, on the other hand, had already gone the distance against Khaelu earlier in the tournament. That extra experience seemed to help. The Team in Teal started extra time on the front foot. And their first real chance went in: after a one-two with Mora, Caligaris broke free on the right and curled a gorgeous finish past Sally, who had replaced Fisher in goal (95’). 2–3.

But this semi-final was far from over. Super Earth, a team built on intensity and belief, regrouped almost instantly. Just three minutes after falling behind, Buzz stepped up from 25 metres and rifled a perfectly struck low drive inside the post — 3–3. From there, the match turned into a tense, nerve-fraying battle of endurance. Creeper nearly scored with an audacious backheel in the 104th minute, while Holdenbeck’s towering header in the 113th grazed the roof of the net. Both sides were visibly running on empty, but neither backed down. By the time the whistle blew, the players looked spent — and penalties would have to decide who would reach the final.

In the shootout, the entire stadium held its breath. The first few penalties were clinical on both sides, struck with precision and power. Then came the turning point: Tropic clipped the outside of the post, and a few minutes later, Creeper saw his shot saved by the outstanding Weiner-Kracht, whose night had already been littered with big saves. When Choppyhausen’s final penalty rippled the back of the net, the Teal section of the stands erupted. Players and staff flooded the pitch — some screaming, some crying, others simply collapsing to their knees in disbelief.

For Super Earth, it is now on to Irstria, Banija, where they’ll contest the third-place playoff. For Choppyhausen, however, history awaits. The team will travel to Canterlot, Equestria where they’ll face Shin-Zetsubo in the final of the 87th Baptism of Fire.

Was eine Bude!

Shin-Zetsubo weren't supposed to be here.

Not in the sense that they didn't have the tactics to stump everybody else, not because the squad wasn't skillful enough, not because they were handed all the demons one could ever ask for in a route to Canterlot.

Nope. Shin-Zetsubo weren't supposed to be here because, to most of the footballing world who gazed upon the next generation at the Baptism of Fire, they stole their spot in the Final.

Syd Parson, in the dying moments of stoppage time, had dived, despairingly whilst giving the ball away, in the penalty box against Snestar's Guilio Martian, in a desperate attempt not to see the squad go through the drama of extra time. The gambit, somehow, worked. Despite Martian getting the ball, despite every angle VAR (a strange little contraption to review calls on the field) provided, when the referee blew his whistle after review, he pointed not to the net occupied by Anna Willows, but to the one occupied by Federico Calvaresi. Penalty for Shin-Zetsubo, with a trip to the Baptism of Fire Final on the line.

Fury came easily for the Viola, a wrongful injustice that tainted a match and tainted the only opportunity Snestar had to reach the mountaintop. After all, everyone only had one shot. Nobody could miss their chance to go, because this opportunity came once in a nation's lifetime.

Sommer Allsopp was met with a chorus of boos from the Viola supporters in La Snerra as she stepped up to a spot after three Snestar players saw red. Calvaresi was given the herculean task of trying to stop a crazy woman's kick from dropping them down to the bronze medal game, to give them hope of seeing themselves duel for the title in Canterlot. It wasn't to be. Despite guessing correctly, Allsopp's ball was just above the keeper's hand. The super sub of Shin-Zetsubo cocked her fingers into a rockstar's salute, crossing her arms and sticking her tongue out as she ran across to Chrystill Emoran's touchline, where she was rightfully surrounded by her countrywomen.

Full time blew, and while Snestar protested further, Shin-Zetsubo were elatious. Sheer despair inflicted, and off to the Final to boot.

Equestria was unlike anything most human-like beings would see in their travels. A land of magic, of friendship, of ponies and alicorns and pegasi. Here, football was called hoofball due to the population kicking using their hooves. The thirty-four women who exited Canterlot's Harmony International met a city where its inhabitants were met with a population of mainly four-hooved individuals, as well as tourists from their own homeland (), from the land of their last opponents and other nations from the Arrosia region and beyond.

Shin-Zetsubo roughly fit most the fabled Elements of Harmony that this nation was guided by on their way to the Final. Honest by the fact that Syd Parson took the blame for diving but attributed the refs for the controversy against Snestar, Laughter mostly coming from their excessive "Puhuhuhu~"-ing at any chance they had, Generosity in the form of Emoran's squad selections giving most of the team a chance on the pitch, Loyalty towards each other and the flag they played under, and Magic because of the journey from girls who didn't even know the sport to a formidable side in just one tournament. Out of the Elements, Kindness didn't fit their MO. Allsopp proved it well by arguing her way to not being played at all during that first game against Canamn, which felt like forever ago. But if every other element could speak for themselves, maybe Shin-Zetsubo actually belonged on this very stage.

Chrystill Emoran led the squad to one last training session on the day before the final. Whilst Super Earth claimed the bronze medal back in Banija, the team in red made the final adjustments needed to face the team in teal known as Choppyhausen head on. Pink hair bobbed and weaved and swayed through the air as each and every one of those players on the squad fought for the last time to earn a place on that team, to step out to the pitch in something that felt so foreign to them a bit ago - A final. To represent your country when everything's on the line, a win, a trophy, a place in history and all the despair of the other team losing.

When Celestia shone upon Canterlot, the manager had her lineup already set. She submitted it to the officials as requested by Hoofball Association staff, and when that lineup was first unveiled, pundits back in Wickersome couldn't believe it.

"A goalkeeper in the outfield? Has Emoran lost her mind?"

"I heard Lyla Moore was working on her outfield work but this is insane. She must realize this is a cup final, right?"

"A cup final her team cannot go back to again, of course."

Lyla Moore found herself in the outfield, occupying a defender's spot. Anna Willows was in goal, with Moore joined by Tori Palmer, Morganne Harden and Pearle Lynton in defense. Only two midfielders were present, those being Maryanne Good and Belle St. John, whilst in attack would be a group of four - Sommer Allsopp of course, they couldn't be in the final without her, Stacee Carsons, Milly Aston and Dream Nicholls. Everybody else could be called upon as a substitute at any time.

Stepping into the Stadium of the Two Sisters for warmups felt like some sort of despairful nirvana for this team. 98,000 seats surrounding them with everybody and everypony watching, a stunning architecture that only magic can create, a pitch that was green as could be and footballs that were a joy to kick around. Cameras were watching them, of course, but did they care? They already won eight straight games, a little bit more camera time didn't hurt.

But in the locker room? It was completely different. A pang of nervousness, a shadow of doubt creeping into the squad. What if they didn't win or lose in despair? What if it wasn't a 4-0 win or a 1-8 loss? What if it was a boring 0-0 draw all the way to penalty kicks? All this talk of despair just to lose in a non-despairful fashion? It was unthinkable, even as those red kits were put on the players and Emoran guided her team out of the room.

Shin-Zetsubo, without a captain, decided to put Willows in front of the line for the walkout. Oddly enough, she did so right next to another keeper - Choppyhausen's captain, Manuel Weiner-Kracht. The fans had already gotten into their seats by the time the cameras were pointed towards the tunnel, the shining Baptism of Fire trophy right in front of the two squads. As they passed through the trophy while taking their side, all those girls just took a glance at it. That was the prize, in all likelyhood, they weren't going to win. Choppyhausen had more experience outside of the national team. The team in red had tenacity, they had despair, but it seemingly wasn't going to be enough.

But everybody said that this team wouldn't make it far in this tournament. They didn't have experience whatsoever in any official football game before stepping onto the pitch at La Gran Avenida to begin this journey. Time after time they proved the experts wrong. They despaired over their opponents freely with each passing moment. And now? The trophy was right there, somehow in front of them. All they had to do, despair against it all, was to beat the odds again.

One chance.

One opportunity.

One. More. Match.

Stadium of Two Sisters, Canterlot, Equestria

The energy inside the venue was electric, and growing by the minute. Ponies, Shin-Zetsubites, and Choppyhausenians fill the stadium, as well as other fans who don’t want to go home just yet. We focus on a specific section in the middle tier, just above the halfway line - surrounded on all sides by ponies, sat five Stewartikans of the national team that so unceremoniously left the Baptism of Fire in the Round of 64.

As the two teams walked out to practice, the varied Choppyhausenians contrasting especially with the bizarrely identical Shin-Zetsubites, they finally begin to speak to one another.

“What a strange place,” says Jorges Grovalle, the keeper, “It’s a shame we never got to play a match outside of Farfadillis.”

A laugh emerges from Cho Seung-a, who reclines with a large bag of popcorn and a significantly sized skien of beer.

“You can’t say this place is so strange compared to the man-eating jellyfish and rusty showers!”

“Are you sure that food’s for humans, Cho?” Asks Aidan Haggstrom, a concerned look on his tan features, “what with the sentient ponies around.”

“I’m sure it’s fine, tastes good enough.”

With just a concerned “okay…” from Haggstrom the subject is finished, but another voice from higher pipes up.

“What do you think of these teams, sunbae?”

The question comes from Jesse Morissey, the 19 year old sensation who topped Stewartika’s scoresheets and was instrumental in many a victory, directed at his older teammates.

“Well, Choppyhausen… they’ve been quietly one of the best teams in the tournament despite losing one of their group stage matches,” Haggstrom replies first, “They’ve struggled sometimes but always pulled through. They’re good.”

“Shin-Zetsubo, though… they’re the ones who beat the guys who beat us, Konstantino, right? You think we could have beat them instead, considering… well… they’re all the same?” Opines Grovalle.

“Guys.”

The voice comes from the final member of the team that remained as spectators - team captain Sung Min-Jae.

“Let’s not dwell on what-ifs. We lost, that’s all. Let’s take this time to see what the shape of the World Cup could be - and who could be our greatest opponent.”

“Okay, so what you do make of Shin-Zetsubo, Sung?”

A bead of sweat sneakily rolls off the Stewartikan captain’s temple.

“Uh. I have to say, it weirds me out.”

“Who’s gonna win?”

“I think it’s… totally up in the air. It’ll be interesting, though.”

The time ticks down to kick-off.

Stewartika is watching… are you?

Awards of the Baptism of Fire

First, let me congratulate Shin-Zetsubo for winning the Eighty-Seventh Baptism of Fire!

The SFA Technical Study Group (or SFATSG for short) has decided to honor the excellence displayed over the course of the tournament with special player awards. Without further ado, allow me to present them!

GOLDEN BALL (PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT)

Jule Corte of Choppyhausen

For his tireless workrate for his country, constant presence and leadership in attack, Jule Corte wins Player of the Tournament for his excellent and perhaps understated performance despite failing to lift the trophy.

Silver Ball

Federico Calvaresi of Snestar

Leading Snestar’s defense to five consecutive clean sheets and becoming an iron wall in front of goal, Calvaresi had the tournament of his life as a keeper. The classlessness shown at the end of the semifinal, however, dissuaded the SFATSG from awarding him the coveted Golden Ball.

Bronze Ball

Alyce Dwerryhouse of Shin-Zetsubo

The unique system of Shin-Zetsubo allows anyone on the pitch to score, and indeed this was shown in the Despair Girls having the most unique goalscorers in the tournament with fourteen players netting in the eight match days. It was difficult, then, to pick out an individual performance from this team that truly deserved awarding, but Dwerryhouse’s consistency awards her the Bronze Ball.

GOLDEN BOOT (TOP SCORER)

Deadman of Super Earth - 12 goals

The Senator runs far and away with the top scorer award, bagging an astounding twelve goals across eight matches, one of them spent suspended. Such an incredible striker’s performance deserves no less.

Silver Boot

Jule Corte of Choppyhausen - 7 goals

Bronze Boot

Aitor Cea of Bonusia - 6 goals

(Aitor Cea, Tero Sjölund, and Chop were tied on 6 goals. Cea takes the Bronze Boot due to having less total minutes played than the other two goalscorers.)

GOLDEN GLOVE (BEST GOALKEEPER)

Federico Calvaresi of Snestar - 5 clean sheets

(Despite being tied with Ira Budi Dharmawanto on clean sheets, with five each, and failing to keep a clean sheet past the Round of 32, the technical study group decided to award the Golden Glove to Federico Calvaresi thanks to the near-unprecedented achievement of keeping 5 consecutive clean sheets in an international tournament.)

BEST YOUNG PLAYER

Deadman of Super Earth

For much of the same reasons as above, the BoF 87 top scorer is only eighteen years young. It was a simple matter to award him the title of Best Young Player. The SFATSG wishes to express special recognition, however, to Henrick Whyatou of Demos (Atymnius)for his astounding individual performance against Colmaijo that rallied his team to advance to the Round of 16. Were it not for Deadman’s scintillating performance and his own young age, he would have surely won the award despite only making it to the last 16.

With those special recognitions, once again I say congratulations to Shin-Zetsubo for winning the Baptism of Fire, and I will see you all in the World Cup!

From the Choppyhausenian Football Association

The 87th Baptism of Fire has reached its end and the Choppyhausenian Football Association (CFA) congratulates the national team of Shin-Zetsubo to their win in the final. They have shown determince and team spirit and have deservedly crowned themselves the best newcomers of the 100th World Cup cycle.

The CFA wants to thank our own national team - the Team in Teal - that has done so well in representing their country in this tournament, finishing on second place out of a record-breaking 112. They have captivated millions of Choppyhauseners in the stadiums and in front of their TV screens. Coach Harmon Merrit and his staff have truly done wonders to bring our team to take our team to Cantelot.

The CFA furthermore wants to thank the hosts Banija, Equestria and Farfadillis for organizing this tournament so wonderfully. We want to thank the many teams that have participated in this enormous Baptism of Fire for creating such a special experience and finally we need to thank you, the fans, that have supported our team through their ups and downs, their wins and their losses, singing in the fan block or screaming at your TV. Thank you very much.

We will see you again in the World Cup.
