I find it hilarious (in a "oh, so we're just taking the mask off now" kind of way) that the GOP's strategy for preventing a shutdown was effectively to just do absolutely zero negotiation with the Democrats and openly say that they expect the Dems to just...roll over and do whatever the GOP says.

It was a bold move, Cotton, and unless they're making some kind of power move by letting the government shutdown, I don't think it worked out for them.

Well they all think that the other side is going to get blamed for it, and in politics that’s all that matters. It’s not whether or not the bad thing happens, but who gets the blame. Republicans will say that Democrats failed to do any negotiations and refused a clean CR and Democrats will blame Republicans. If Republicans don’t end up getting the blame from their own constituents (and I don’t think it’s likely that they will), this is probably a net neutral politically for them. Trump didn’t really care much about the effectiveness of the programs getting stopped. I’m just not sure what the Republicans lose by letting this shutdown happen.

I mean, Trump said that he'd fire federal employees if the shutdown happened, which honestly, I bet will play well with the crowd that has no understanding how economics or the government work and will simply think "less workers = less taxes = somehow booming economy", but will probably make said federal employees less likely to vote for him.

Unless they're fanatics, of course. Which, considering the number of sycophants he's appointed, it wouldn't surprise me if they were.

Basically the House Agreed on a continuing Resolution in the House to keep the government funded. Then the Senate couldn't get 60 votes to pass it so the government shuts down. Everyone gets paid first of the month but after that everything deemed non essential gets shut down and everything essential continues unpaid until Congress gets there shit together and funds the government. This happens every few years typically it's the minority party grandstanding for political points & wanting to make the president/ controlling party look bad. Could last a few days or as long as 35 days historically. But typically they eventually come around to passing the bill to keep the government open X Ammount of time typically a few months so they can do it all again. Government shutdowns are just going to keep happening as we become more polarized.

The current one my understanding is that it's practically the exact same extension they passed the last 13 times the government almost shutdown the latest being back in January when Biden was still president. The issue this time is Democrats want to reverse spending cuts the Administration passed thus far.
