Colombia vs Peru river conflict

Postby Rio Cana » Fri Aug 08, 2025 5:52 pm

Have not read any news in NS on this. So has anyone read or heard about this. The Pres. of Colombia is claiming a Peruvian island (Santa Rosa island) which is on the Amazon river. Santa Rosa island was part of the larger Peruvian island of Chineria but 50 years ago it got separated somewhat from Chineria island.

In 1922, a treaty was signed between both nations. Peru had claims north of the Amazon, Leticia region, but decided to let Colombia claim that part. Peru would keep the island of Chineria close to the northern shore of the Amazon river while the northern shore of the river, todays location of the Colombian city of Leticia, would be given to Colombia. At that time, the deepest part of the river was located at that border point between both nations. Its the 21 century and that part of the river is not very deep because of low rain and silt. This has affected the port of the city of Leticia which in the future could lose its port.

One YT. news announcer from Argentina found this situation unbelievable and ridiculous.

Should point out that elections in Colombia are next year and that the Colombian Pres. seems not to be really popular. Some say this is all a show to get re-elected.

Map which shows the location - https://www.infobae.com/resizer/v2/WCKC ... quality=85

My opinion is that Peru is in the right. This just seems to be a political ploy by the ruler in Colombia. Colombia just needs to dredge there part of the river. In the meantime, the Brazilians are most likely looking at this situation (theres a large Brazilian city named Tabatinga next to the tri-border point where all this is happening) while eating popcorn.

Eh it’s been a while since South America had a border war. Why not now?

But nah seriously this shit is stupid. The rich and powerful playing with people’s lives for their own selfish ends.

Most consequential "war" in Latin America (<5 deaths over the most pointless border dispute ever)

Also, isn't your president's approval rating nearly 0%?

FUCK ISRAEL! I support peace, therefore I stand with Palestine. I want a bi-national solution, a state in which Jews and Palestinians can coexist peacefully. The onus is on Israel to stop this - it can do it anytime by bringing a ceasefire and ending apartheid.

Put another option in the poll: Neither side. All through history, these kind of border wars have always been completely pointless.

Honestly, as long as we, South Americans, remain divided over pointless border conflicts, past grudges, senseless rivalries, and arbitrary political divides, we will be prey for the United States, Europe, and also China. This conflict is just another nail in the coffin of failed attempts for South American unity - Simón Bolívar's Patria Grande, UNASUR, etc. I hope both countries reach an agreement and that this dispute is soon forgotten.

In current news -The government of Argentina supports Peru and will help Peru by supplying them with weapons if necessary. This is to payback Peru for supporting them against the UK. over the Malvinas. Also, remember, Argentina has a right leaning government while Colombias is left-leaning. They say in a war that the Peruvian air force and Navy can outmatch Colombias. When it comes to land troops, Peru has 100.000 vs. Colombias 250.000. Remember, Colombia has been fighting rebels for over half a century which explains the large force. However, Peru has tanks while Colombia does not.

I fear that Lula, being the semiliterate dumbass he is, will support Colombia against Peru because Colombia is ruled by the left-wing and the other is supported by his Argentine rival.

Yeah, in most places, scuffles would break out. But the nations in the Guyana Region, (Guyana, France, and Suriname) all have massive disputes. Borders don't often change.

Even if they try to mobilize soldiers, see the show between Venezuela and Guyana when Maduro moved troops to the border.

I checked Google Maps, it clearly shows that the border follows the northern channel of the river. Colombia's claim is clearly bullshit.

Colombias Pres. is now causing a commotion since the US approved the authorization of the military to attack drug cartels. The drug cartels in Latin America that are on the US list. The Colombian Pres. says he will not allow US forces to violate their sovereignty. So seems he is stuck in-between the US and Peru.

Remember that Petro is a former guerrilla member and have the title of "Persona Non Grata" in Peru due to him comparing peruvian police to nazis in 2023. He cannot enter USA either because his visa was revoked.

This explains a bit of this conflict motivation.

There's a much bigger country in South America (Bordering Colombia) whose president have this same profile.
