Five women who were exploited by grooming gangs in Rotherham as children say they were also abused police officers in the town at the time.

One says she was raped from the age of 12 by a serving South Yorkshire Police (SYP) officer in a marked police car. He would threaten to hand her back to the gang if she did not comply, she says.

I think so. Not meaningful progress, but I genuinely didn't think until France did it last week that I would ever see the UK do it, and it shows at least the tiniest bit of willingness to part from American policy on this.

Unless, of course, there have been behind-the-scenes talks where the US has given the go-ahead for this as some kind of proxy diplomatic pressure...thing. But I can't imagine Trump doing that.

I don't understand why people have a problem with people doing that. You don't have a moral duty to submit to the criminal justice system of your country even if it is a perfect one which ours most certainly is not.

That would require him to utterly u-turn on several bizarrely-advised lines such as "I know what a genocide is, that is why I have not called it that".

"Doing a Thunberg with the Navy" was always possible, the US were trying to do it late last year. It's just kind of redundant. The state has to want to do it, and the state is very tired right now.

Can't imagine not understanding why people have a problem with fleeing justice.

The principle reasons are twofold: 1) Yennon has means available, he can fundraise abroad and continue to live while out there, and 2) he has malice aforethought. As soon as he realises what he has done - per the article - he fobs off a "self-defence" claim and fucking legs it.

He is not a victim of "state persecution", and Telegraph opinion articles aside, Britain is not at war, last I checked. As he has committed a serious offence (knocking someone unconscious is automatic GBH, isn't it?), he should stand trial for that and make his defence. I do not agree, but even if I did, I do not see why the two need to be at odds. The Bolsheviks and Mao certainly emancipated a lot of people, but that did not bring much relief to combined tens of millions of people that died as a consequence of their policy decisions. I doubt that Bian Zhongyun's final thoughts were "at least Mao encouraged my brutal murder and not Zhang Zuolin!". I should be clear that I do not think any of the prominent self-described socialists within the Green Party - or now that is topical, Sultana and Corbyn's upcoming party - will be the next Mao Zedong and cause the deaths of 5%~ of the population through bad policy and political violence. I do think, however, that socialism would not benefit the UK or Scotland and would ultimately make things even worse for people. Populism promises the world but rarely delivers.
