Bohr football (still called soccer in some parts of the country, although that has largely gone out of style) is reasonably large, but never made it to a pro level until 1979, when a group of large corporations started the Bohr Soccer League. The 10-team, then later 12-team BSL started out as a success, but abruptly collapsed in 1985 due to scandal and insolvency; the league would attempt to put on a seventh season, but failed, and would officially close. That experience served as a cautionary tale and discouraged many other wannabe professional leagues until 1994, when Bohr Championship Football was created. This was meant to be a more low-key and traditional endeavor, using a standard league system instead of the BSL's playoffs and actually attempting to take local fans' wishes into account. Whether or not that succeeds is still on the table, however.

BCF Preseason Power Rankings

Look, let’s be honest; preseason predictions are always a crapshoot. This is true even in established leagues, where everything has historical context and a baseline is pretty easy to set; but this is the upstart BCF, where we have 5-year-old college stats, shaky phone footage of practice scrimmages, and gut feelings regarding whether a player is “nice” or “has that dog in him”. All that being said... it’s still fun, isn’t it? In a few weeks, there will be heroes and goats, title favorites and minnows struggling to win a game. For this moment, however, anything is possible.

14: Akinis FC

Well, almost anything. Akinis, named after the up-scale neighborhood in eastern Becis, boasts “the cleanest stadium in Bohr”, and while there’s no formal dress code you’ll probably get some dirty looks if you show up in a t-shirt and sweatpants. Perhaps this is why the team hasn’t been able to acquire much talent-football players are, after all, known t-shirt-and-sweatpants enthusiasts. Coach Dalvin Mitchell is a name that many older fans will know, as a standout midfielder during Jardin College’s late 1970s run of five straight championships, but his only relevant head coaching experience (along with various assistant coordinator jobs) was at non-SL college BSNEP. Fittingly, the midfield is the most promising part of this team, but instability at the back combined with a lack of finishing talent will probably make Akinis’ fans grateful that this first season doesn’t include relegation.

Key Player: A College Gold Star center-back last year, 23-year-old Austin Easley will be given a lot of responsibility-while he has been praised for his maturity and communication skills, it’ll be a difficult job. His performance will likely be the X-factor for an otherwise unreliable defense.

13: Frumston 74

It was a pretty big surprise when a team from a town as anonymous as Frumston was announced to be part of the BCF, and this puzzlement only decreased slightly with the release of their roster. Coach Luca Thompson has put together a team of local players that, with one notable exception, have little to no presence outside of the region. If the team does well, it’s possible that people like center forward Kyle Foster and goalkeeper Carl Dudley will become known as breakout players, especially with the assistance of their team captain. If not, Thompson will have a lot of work to do to get the team ready for a 1997 relegation battle.

Key Player: Oh yeah, that team captain. Winger Chuck Radler, over two seasons with college Starleague team SWP, vaulted himself from nobody to folk hero; his vocal leadership, strong build, and incredible touch with the ball at his feet made him a very well-fitting player for the often less-sophisticated college game. It was a surprise when Radler effectively disappeared after his final college game (a heartbreaking loss to rivals NWP), going back to his family’s farm. It’s arguably an even larger surprise that he’s back with Frumston now after six years. Radler has shown an ability to make his teammates better, and it could be a blessing in disguise that Frumston is a more low-key team; getting them to above average would probably make it so he would never have to buy a drink in Frumston again.

12: Wannick FC

Another “neighborhood team” like Akinis, Wannick, located in the middle of Weaver, is in an interesting situation. Coach Juan Figueroa and his team have been playing (under various names) on the semi-pro scene for a few years now, unlike many other teams that were scrobbled-together recently. This gives them an advantage in terms of teamwork, but also means that they lack almost any semblance of young legs-an issue that Figueroa has not seemed to care about. The baby of the expected starting lineup is Darrell Laur, at the ripe young age of 27, and it only gets worse from there. As a result, as much the fans might want to see flashy offensive football, the team will probably be more plodding and possession focused. That may still find success, though.

Key Player: At 32, striker Edwin Kalus is one of a few players who has actually played professional football in Bohr before, being a youth product of OSO Automotive before the BSC’s untimely collapse. Since then, while many players returned to desk jobs or started to coach high-school ball, Kalus has continued to play “full-time”, scoring the most goals for what is now Wannick FC (albeit against a very diluted talent pool). His performance-and Wannick’s in general-in the new league will be a good measuring stick of the talent level.

11: Donrod City

One of a few teams that can trace their lineage back to the BSC, Donrod was consistently a mid-table team there, and there is every indication that that will continue. Coach Phil Melly is another non-Starleague college man, having led Donnell Technical Institute to a couple conference championships, but a dip in performance made it simple to leave. Melly and the team do seem to be somewhat incompatible; the team has a lot of strong attacking talent, with the supremely athletic Jason Fishman at striker and some solid wingers, but Melly is a master of the 1-0 victory and the back line seems shaky. If the coach and team can gel, it might be pretty fun to watch.

Key Player: John “Glue” Zhu is famous for his versatility; although he most commonly showed up as a midfielder at Jardin College, he managed to play almost every position on the pitch besides goalkeeper, gaining his nickname for his ability to always make lineups work. In a more structured (and higher-tier) environment like Melly’s, some of Zhu’s talent might be wasted, but he can still perform as an effective defensive midfielder, which has classically been a key part of Melly’s tactics.

10: Becis Annex

The team from the Becis suburbs, the Annex probably suffers the worst from the city’s prominence, being almost completely consigned to “little brother” fate. Despite this, the Annex has put together a pretty decent team that is only 10th for a couple reasons. One of the most important reasons here is their coach. Neal Heston is the youngest head coach in the league at 34, younger than more than a couple active players, and although he definitely knows the game, his actual coaching experience is the smallest of anyone in the league. Heston doesn’t have the advantage of a “player coach”, either; the most well-known player, center back Gene Robertson, is taciturn, and no one else is much of a talker either. There’s talent here, though, and if the team starts strong none of this might matter.

Key Player: Left midfielder Alexandr Korystov is likely the best of a very good midfield unit; while he doesn’t quite have the plus-plus speed that some Bohrians do, he makes up for it with impeccable dribbling and passing technique, as well as being surprisingly tenacious in defensive situations.

9: Shansco Iron

Ah, the Iron. One of a few teams that can claim to represent the working man, we’re a few years removed from when every member of the team worked in construction or the mines. A couple of them still “live the gimmick”, though; midfielders DuFord and Andrewson were seen legitimately helping with their preparatory stadium upgrades. Manager David Childs is also a throwback from the early days of Bohr football, where Shansco played an important role; he dislikes substitutes and isn’t much for technical innovation, preferring to focus on pure, fundamental football. The Iron are going to be an annoying team to play, with decent defense and enough finishing to make games tough, but it’ll be tough for them to climb into championship contention.

Key Player: Sven Hahr is the more notable of the Iron’s striker duo; one of the biggest guys in BCF, he will be the main target for the direct attacks on goal that they plan to go for. If the goal-scoring machine comes to life, it’ll likely be because of Hahr’s talent.

8: Weaver Union

Over the past couple decades, Weaver has gone from a broken-down port town to the shining city that it always aspired towards, a leader in technology with a growing food and art scene. In some ways, it’s nice that their main football team, led by one-time Girard Auto coach Isaiah Fremlin, is still a throwback to those old days. Weaver plays a gritty, annoying style of play (early odds have them at 2-1 to lead the league in yellow cards) that attempts to mask their lack of talent anywhere near the front. Their back line is very good, but whether they’ll be good enough to get them out of the midtable remains to be seen.

Key Player: Bohr has a ton of good goalkeepers, but Rider Morris is one of the most interesting. Spurning the college system in favor of playing with older, more experienced (if less dedicated) teams, Morris’ gamble seems to have paid off; at 22, he’s on pace to become one of the best goalkeepers in the league. He may not have to do much on this Weaver team, but ever goal he does prevent is going to be crucial.

7: St. Natasha Palace

Ahhh, here we go. It’s an open secret that both St. Natasha Palace and the other St. Natasha team, who we’ll get to, are owned by the same corporation. One More Extra (or OME) owns about half of St. Natasha’s gambling industry, and their entry into the league with two teams has been met with a hell of a lot of suspicion. That being said, their roster is surprisingly muted (again, with a couple exceptions) for such an auspicious group. Relatively young coach Josh Landry was a bit of a surprise, being hired away from Incol River college where he’s done a very good job-he’s gained some reputation as an offensive mastermind, and he’ll certainly have the personnel to show that off. The team will have a lot of success pushing forward, but their goalkeeper will have a lot of responsibility to keep the wins-and maybe the money-from drying up.

Key Player: It has to be Max Anderson; the striker was the young player of the year when the BSL folded, and remains one of the most recognizable names in the sport. At 33, Anderson has notably not played all that much competitive football, but he looks as fit as he did at 23, and early reports are very promising. It’s a good thing, too; OME allegedly is paying Anderson the highest salary of anyone in the league, so they would love for him to put up an incredible season.

6: St. Natasha Pyramid

The other team involved in One More Extra’s exploits, Pyramid is very close to Palace skill-wise, but has gotten a lot more of the media’s attention. Aside from the issues involved with one company owning to teams in the same league (needless to say, if Pyramid and Palace face each other in the late stages of the season, everyone will be keeping a very close eye on how hard the teams are playing), Pyramid also got involved with a poaching scandal when they (allegedly) stole fullback duo Pete Warnor and Timmy Beaufort from Heavenly Princess; an intense war on social media erupted over that, although it hasn’t quite carried over to real life yet. Their coach was also an odd choice; Sherrod Simpson was an incredible defender in his time, but has little to no experience even on the college and semi-pro circuits.

Key Player: Warner and Beaufort have been mentioned previously, so let’s go with Bennett Rosales, likely the main playmaker for the squad. Speedy and with a great eye for space, Rosales would likely be even better if not for his disappointing tendency to take minutes, and occasionally whole games, off, visibly not giving a shit. If he can be “encouraged” to play harder, it could be massive for the Pyramid.

5: Heavenly Princess

Officially “The Football Club of the Order of the Heavenly Princess”, HP can claim to be the oldest football team in Bohr; being based on a famed Zephael society that has been around for over a century. The team has a number of influential backers as a result, as every living member holds a share. As another team based in the Becis area, they probably have the best shot at dislodging Becis City’s hold on the region, although their image as the blue-blood old-money elites probably won’t make them all that sympathetic. Fittingly, coach Beckett Banks is a member of the Order, being the “big man on campus” at Zephael decades prior. His coaching career at Zeph was less successful, with only one championship in six years-good for most teams, bad for a group that basically expects to win every game. Many ex-Zeph stars are also part of the team, although depth may be an issue.

Key Player: Center back Jaxon Girard is an odd one; one of the heirs to the Girard Auto fortune, at 6’5” with matinee-idol looks you would expect him to be anything other than a bruising defender. Yet, that’s exactly what he is, and that physicality combined with a leadership presence made him the X-factor in pushing Zephael over the top to win Banks’ only college championship. Ideally, he would be able to do the same thing with this defense.

4: Motan FC

The only representative of northwestern Bohr in the championship currently, Motan is another one of the dominant semi-pro forces of the country, giving a city with not much something to cheer for even after the BSL’s collapse. They actually have an academy system, not willing to let the colleges do all their job for them, and are generally thought of as one of the best-organized teams in Bohr. Coach Quinn Jensen embodies this theory. Although his tactics are not innovative by any means, he’s fanatical about training and biomechanics while also being pretty good at player relationships. Motan are mostly well-rounded, with the defense and goalkeeping being a strong point; some may call them dull, but the Motan diehards won’t care if they’re winning games.

Key Player: It’s hard to name just one player on a team like this, but keeper Arnold Harrow probably fits the bill the best. Jensen recruited Harrow basically off the street, as the story goes; seeing someone with the physical gifts that Harrow has, it was a no-brainer. Over the years, he’s molded Arnold into a proper goalkeeper-although Harrow can occasionally make some questionable errors, his height (big), wingspan (massive), and penchant for spectacular diving saves makes up for it and then some.

3: Colside Mechanic

Now we’re getting to the heavy hitters. The former OSO Automotive FC went back to their original name after OSO pulled out of sports, but left a top-tier stadium, a strong fanbase, and a rock-solid defensive tradition. Coach Don Michaels was an assistant back in those days, and has slowly climbed the ladder to the top role; his style is very possession-focused and somewhat conservative, which is exactly what the fans (theoretically) want. The talent seems to support that idea, with strong goalkeeping and solid midfield talent that may lack the athleticism to create chances against top teams. The outstanding consistency should mean that they don’t often drop points, which is much needed in a league format like this.

Key Player: Central midfielder Woody Triggs, at 34 and coming to Colside Mechanic from the semi-pro Yellowjackets, is almost certainly on the last seasons of his career, and age has hit him hard athletically. His excellent vision and passing skills remain, however, and he’s always been a bit of a “mad scientist”; someone willing to give up a turnover or two to find an opening. Whether Michaels will tolerate that type of play is an open question, but it may be absolutely necessary for full success.

2: Shansco Athletic

The other (and even older) team in Shansco, the Athletic Club was founded around 70 years ago and has slowly morphed from a group of like-minded sporting individuals to a (still somewhat small) juggernaut. After losing many of their players and personnel to the BSL, which promised higher pay, Athletic simply rebuilded from the ground up, getting Aiden Wallace to lead a new generation of Bohrian stars. That plan seems to have worked out, as Athletic, taking advantage of Shansco’s football roots and constantly working with both the colleges and high schools around Bohr, now have the deepest and most well-rounded team at the birth of the BCF. Wallace is young and willing to experiment, but he’s definitely more of a “player’s coach”; his relative lack of structure leads to fun, free-flowing football, and maybe it’ll also lead to a championship.

Key Player: Striker Benedikt Weiss isn’t the best player on the team, but he might be the most important. The only player with proven consistent goal-scoring chops, Weiss is likely past his prime but is still a quality finisher who can do work with both feet. The question of if he can stay healthy (which has been an issue in the past) will be very important, however.

1: Becis City

The kings (and still, technically, defending champions) of the BSL, Becis City are also looking to become the kings of BCF. Although some other teams can trace their lineage back, Becis is really the only group with a large active group of ex-BSL figures-starting with legendary coach Don West. West is a Becis institution, having worked at every level of the game over a 35-year coaching career, and he will have no trouble wrangling these players into a fully cohesive unit. The players themselves are well-known and accustomed to high-level play as well, although questions of age are there; top keeper Greg Callahan is 33, playmaking midfielder Teddy Schwartz is also 33, and second striker Tom Bauer is 35, not to mention their (and the BCF’s as a whole) star player. If all of these players were in their physical primes, Becis would likely walk over the league without breaking a sweat; as it is, they’re likely going to have to struggle a bit more, although they’re still the favorites.

Key Player: Striker Kevin Crohn, the Professor himself, has returned to professional play. Crohn was probably the single most famous member of Bohr’s “lost generation” that was caused by the death of the BSL; 11 years ago, at just 23, he smashed the single-season goal record, scoring 44 in 44 games. Then he was just gone, making a public statement in the newspapers about how top-level football “made a mockery of the beautiful game”, proposing his own rule changes that were met with derision, and then effectively falling off the face of the earth. So why is he back? According to him, it’s because he’s found a new passion for football; a less charitable reason is that he’s getting paid a hell of a lot of money. Either way, Crohn is going to be an incredibly interesting player to watch as the season goes on.

The first three months of the new era of Bohr football are a mess. An entertaining mess, mind you, but still a mess. As the record books are created (Tom Bauer picks up the first goal, Carl Dudley grabs the first clean sheet, and, a week later, Julius Schmid earns the first hat trick of the new league), teams struggle to find consistency, chemistry, and fitness. The talk of the country early is Becis Annex, who steal City's inaugural-game spotlight by traveling into Colside and beating them 4-1; Neal Heston's high-tempo pressing style, combined with an athletic group of midfielders, seems to take Mechanic by surprise, and when Max Anderson's Palace team falls by the same 4-1 score, people start to crown Heston as a coaching visionary. This quickly goes off the rails when they play at Becis City and get rocked by the score of, you guessed it, 4-1, as Max Bird holding his knee while Kevin Crohn dribbles past becomes the front-page image the next day. Annex settle into a groove of inconsistency, just as likely to get blown out as to blow out opponents. It's something that Becis City fans would laugh at if they weren't in a similar spot; Keeper Greg Callahan claims that three wins and two draws in their first five games is "a bit of a let-down", then lets in four against forgotten Becis team Akinis. Becis City are currently in sixth, Annex in eighth. Both are somewhat disappointing placements compared to their potential, but on the other hand, they're two and four points, respectively, out of the league lead. That's kind of just how the league has gone. Shansco Athletic and St. Natasha Pyramid seem to be the two favorites, having traded the league lead six different times over nine weeks, but even they're both flawed teams. Benedikt Weiss, thought to be Athletic's main weapon, has scored just twice and looked increasingly banged-up, forcing coach Wallace to get creative. In St. Natasha, meanwhile, controversy has reigned, even as Pyramid does better than even OME expected; the Beaufort/Warner case was dropped just in time for the first St. Natasha "derby" (in the same way that St. Natasha is a "city"), where a promotion for betting on which player would score the first goal was massively advertised. The game, of course, ended in a 0-0 draw, which did the "Pees" (Pyramid and Palace, get it) no favors.

The hottest team in the league, meanwhile, is Heavenly Princess. After an abysmal start that saw them get lumped with the "have-nots" of the league, wealthy businessmen and random message board posters had the same idea: fire Beckett Banks. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed, and the Aristocrats have gone win-draw-win-win-win-win-win, scoring 16 goals in their last three games and going from 12 points back to just two (while they're in fifth). Unless you're Wannick (can't hold on to the ball), Frumston (can't defend), Weaver (can't score), or Akinis (can't do anything), you have a very legitimate chance at winning the entire gosh-darn league. Take Motan, for example. After losing their inaugural game fiesta against Becis City, they've quietly inched back into the top 4, beating both Shansco Athletic and St. Natasha Pyramid in the process in showcases of Arnold Harrow's goalkeeping talent. They're the only team to be completely perfect in their home stadium, giving up a single goal in five games within the icy confines of Nell Field. Colside Mechanic have done well for themselves, with Woody Triggs fitting in surprisingly well by leading the team in assists; as have the other Shansco team, the Iron, whose striker duo have complemented each other perfectly even as they compete with each other. With the Bohr Invitational Tournament coming up, the season will take a one-month break; one team will come back with a piece of silverware, but ten teams will come back with true ambitions to win the league.

Bohr Championship Football: Season 7 Preview

That's the question we're aiming to find out here, as Bohr Championship Football enters a new, slightly more international era. The 14-team league (a promotion-relegation system has been planned for practically the league's entire existence and is finally good to go) has gone through lots of player moves and one team move in its six years, but the goal remains the same: win, at any cost. Will St. Natasha Pyramid win their third consecutive title? Will Heavenly Princess' star-studded roster translate into hardware? Will Colside Mechanic finally be able to turn their strong starts into a strong finish? All of these questions, and more, might be answered, eventually.

The blossoming of Jamie Sullivan, high-quality college recruiting, and a few extremely questionable transfers between Pyramid and "sister team" St. Natasha Palace turned this team from a star-studded but inconsistent group of names into the league's first back-to-back champions. Aside from Sullivan (Bohr's ace striker and constant subject of contract rumors), Roces and Howard can both break games in their own right, and Sargent serves as a less inspiring but more consistent threat, either as a deep-lying forward or at the right wing. Warnor, the biggest name tampered with, heads up the back line; it's less flashy than the offense, of course, but Dubois is a very solid keeper who rarely makes mistakes, and Finn James, as the chant goes, wins games. Winning three years straight is hard, if not impossible, and both of Pyramid's first two championships were captured on the final day, but it's hard not to believe in the team with the best player in the country.

Like seemingly every year they've had, it's another championship-or-bust year for the Princesses. The addition of Towson Turner from Akinis FC, the largest transfer of the season, gives the squad a proven goal-scorer who can take advantage of Orlan Healy and Herb Schuyler's creation abilities, and new addition Kirby Williams along with super-utility workman Eli Sheve (currently slotted in at right back, of all places) are going to force opposing teams to deal with their energy for 90 straight minutes. With the Old Guard of Girard and Dipper shoring up the defense, it feels like the only thing that can get in this team's way is themselves and their owners; it's known that members of the Order of the Heavenly Princess have an uncommon amount of control over tactics and day-to-day work at the facility.

A slow start gave way to Becis City being the hottest team in the league over the last half of the season, barely losing a third championship on goal difference. It's not a perfect roster-Ashby Jr. has mostly been a disappointment relative to this pedigree, Lenko has never been quite as solid as a striker as the fans would like, Jacques and Auburn are in year one and not used to the pressure of a title hunt, and their main acquisition being the 34-year-old and frequently-injured Charlie Lundin was more of a ten-point Olympic dive and less of a cannonball splash. With Jacques as the youngest regular starter in the league and Dudley as the oldest, it's a bit of a patchwork team, but the strengths-Brunner as a living stop sign for central passes, Haider cleaning up mistakes, and the beautifully-crafted second-line moves from Simmons and Turner-remain the strengths, and they'll always be in the hunt for that third ring.

Eight wins in eight games and an eight-point lead at the top of the table got eighten-sorry, eaten-up quickly, and the Mechs' season ended in another somewhat disappointing manner. The best back four in the nation remains, with Goodwin and Garnett being a combination of fullbacks strong enough that Jones feels comfortable playing with no other true wingers-Garnett in particular is expected to have a massive year, both offensively and defensively. Levasseur and Gonzales are both new in blue, with Jean-Paul coming out of college with lots of hype and Phillip departing from hapless Frumston; their young legs should allow Connelly and Tango's old legs to relax a bit more and focus purely on getting the ball into the back of the net. When everything's working, Mechanic looks like a well-oiled machine, constantly taking care of business. If everything isn't, it could be a DNF for the team, and for Oscar Jones.

If not now, when? The core of players-Ding, Ye, Herbert, Carlisle, Lorenz-that have brought Weaver into unexpected contention, a golden generation for a city in the middle of a golden generation of its own, are fully in their primes. It would be unfair to say that it's championship or bust, and if Weaver won they'd be the smallest team to win by a decent margin (even Motan has most of Northern Bohr to themselves), but the stakes remain clear. The supporting cast is solid enough-Chop Fulton does to attackers what is implied by his name, while Liam Turner (acquired on a free from Heavenly Princess) adds much-needed experience and poise-but the Weaver home-growns are the true story. Will they all stay around long enough to find an international spot-or, perhaps, aim even higher?

A team that's always been old-school, Athletic might now just be old. It's still a well-put-together squad, with lots of depth and no standout weaknesses, but only two players on the starting eleven are aged below 29,and more are on the wrong side of 30 than not. A lot relies on National Team performer Khalikov, who has shown flashes of being a truly special, top-level player, someone who can both score and create at a high level, but even he seems somewhat limited by the tactics given. It's hard to see this team truly making a championship run, but 6th seems like it could be underrating them.

Where has the time gone? Five years have passed since Motan took an early run all the way to a spectacular championship, putting their names in the record books and seemingly portending the northerners in yellow to be contenders forever. It hasn't quite worked out that way; an abrupt 10th place resulted in Eli Sheve's departure and Quinn Jensen's retirement, and Motan has been working uphill ever since. There's reasons to be optimistic, at least; Donnie Gosling comes out of Northwest Provincial College as the best student-athlete in the country, a massive get for Motan, and talented but eccentric striker Chuck Radler joins his fourth squad in six seasons-if he can stick with the team, the goal-scoring potential is there, and Harrow and Soto are incredible fallback plans. It's just hard to put the team any higher than this after four seasons of complete and utter mediocrity.

After a two-season run of contention, peaking at an incredible 2nd-place finish, many of Akinis' cornerstones have been taken away. Gone is Towson Turner to Heavenly Princess, gone is Charlie Lundin to Becis City, a stark reminder that the Deacons are merely the third team in a two-team city. It's not apocalyptic, however. Amine Bouquet, a true shut-down defender and perhaps the best left-back in the country, remains, along with Jason Vin and Rider Morris; John Zhu, Jeremy Law, and Princess cast-off Michael McCann were all good inexpensive pick-ups that should keep the floor on this team relatively high. It's a team that will have to fight for every win, and an IFCF spot is probably out of reach, but the middle of the table is not such a bad place to be.

The country's favorite midtable team, one of the teams with roots in the now-defunct BSL, Donrod has never been particularly good but have often been at least entertaining. That hasn't been true in the Murphy-Price era, where they've been solid but not even remotely entertaining, and this season promises more of the same. Evela-Gavax Den, the dual-national right back and the BCF's first non-binary player, joined Donrod instead of anywhere else so that they could focus 100% on football, and they add to a defense that was quality enough to get them to 8th last season (although still well behind the top group). 9th is perhaps a bit low as a prediction, but it's hard to favor them against anyone above them, while they're clearly beyond the rest.

It seemed inevitable that, if and when relegation was implemented, Frumston would be one of the teams going down. That's still entirely possible, but for one season, they managed to make it look unlikely, getting all the way up to ninth and even beating Motan for the first time in both of their histories. Phillip Gonzales is gone, but folk-hero winger Rufus Tennyson remains; after a decade of bouncing around semi-pro leagues in his spare time while working construction, the long-bearded Tennyson was a revelation for Frumston last season, and the only reason bigger teams have passed on him is because of his age and miles. Him and Evan Willis give Frumston two players that can match up against any other team in the country, a step up from the typical one or zero.

There's something here. Maybe that's faint praise-okay, it is faint praise-but there's a level of talent that exists in Wannick, even if it's not optimal, that doesn't exist in the teams below. A first-year-manager is always an odd situation, but other teams have managed to succeed with one in the recent past; the last of a definite star is tough, although Topaz De la Cruz should be good for a few highlight dribbles; the striker situation is weak, but that could be said about roughly three-quarters of the league. Sometimes, success just comes down to the number of good players you have, and Wannick has a lot of them for being this far down; Peterson is completely pro-ready despite being new to the league, Bird and Wescott remain solid, and the aforementioned De La Cruz and Maverick Justice add explosiveness (and, in Justice's case, a permanent spot at the top of any clickbait "Best Names in BCF" list).

As the only team in the league with three at the back, Iron are interesting if only for that tactical reason. All three of the center-backs were up to the task last season, and both Bonner and Hinrich are talented at tracking back, but the issues with creativity and pure talent up front remain. Roberts and North can only generously be considered "BCF-caliber", and there isn't really someone who challenges defenses in the mid-field. The team has always been defensively-oriented, even in the pre-professional days where they actually did work in the mines, but there's a difference between choosing to win games 1-0 and only being able to win games 1-0, and this squad feels like the latter.

Last Five Seasons: 6th, 11th, 7th, 12th, 14th

Two years ago, Cantrill Palace were St. Natasha Palace, the other team after Pyramid owned by One More Extra. While this setup-one company owning two teams-was obviously a conflict of interest, and rumors of foul play were constant, it really only came to a head when three top-level players were transferred for bargain-bin prices from Palace to Pyramid, gutting one team and turning the otther into a champion. With Pyramid becoming a pop-culture sensation, any punishments were swept under the rug, and Palace were hastily sold to Alexx Thompson, a Cantrill tech entrepreneur mostly known for being one of the founders of online gaming website FuseOn. Thompson has been much more spendthrift than the Cantrill partisans would like, and it shows; some of the youngsters show promise, with Tree being a potential stud, but it's a pretty barren roster overall, and a relegation fight seems fairly likely.

Last Five Seasons: 7th, 4th, 14th, 11th, 13th
Annex was, at one point, an enjoyable team, with a high-goal funball strategy that earns them all kinds of fans from across Bohr (especially haters of the big two Becis teams). Then they lost all their sparkplugs on offense, and it's been a rough slog since, with last season's squad having the worst defense and most Goals Conceded in the league. The best part of this team is the wings; Dagen and Sleever, who Banks brought with him from St. David, both have some ability, and Snyder and Sloan can also contribute offensively, although their defensive acumen is more limited. If Banks can fix the defense, Annex could survive, but it's not exactly what he's known for, and the tools available to him are suboptimal.

Bohr Challengers League

The Bohr Challengers League is the second tier of Bohr Football, and contains 16 professional and semi-professional teams. In a new development, the top team earns promotion to BCF, while the second-place team plays a two-legged home-and-away playoff against the thirteenth-placed BCF team.

Girard Invitational
The Girard Invitational is a thirty-two team randomly-seeded single-elimination cup, featuring every BCF and BCL team as well as the two best college teams in the country. Games are played at the selected home team's stadium until the finals, where they are played at a neutral site; this year, the chosen site was OMEDNF1KBIFBWSUTACA Stadium, home of St. Natasha Pyramid.

A well-rotated Heavenly Princess team going down to Incol River is nevertheless the banter result of the round; Incol is a good squad, but losing to a second-tier side is something that simply should not happen, and the clamor about this season being just as disappointing the last couple for the team begins in earnest. College teams also punch significantly above their weight, with Northwest Provincial picking up a clean win away in Burke and Southwest Poly taking St. Natasha Pyramid to the absolute limit.

Yeah, funny thing about that. Pyramid was supposed to be the offensive fireworks team, but they've had five out of six clean-sheets. They're now four points clear of HP and three points back of the lead, behind a Shansco Athletic squad that, in sharp contrast to the Patricians, started with four straight 1-0 wins and put on a masterclass in taking care of business against admittedly-weaker opposition. On the other side of the table, all the expected names are in the relegation battle except for overachieving Wannick and maybe Annex; with twenty games left, it's difficult to make any definitive calls, but every point matters.

A couple stumbles from Athletic and Pyramid, and the top four snaps into place, all separated by just two points. City has already beaten two of the other top teams, taking out Pyramid at home and Princess away; Athletic is the team to watch coming up on the half-way mark, with fixtures against City and Princess looming. On the other side, everyone from Wannick on down has at least a bit of cold feet about the relegation situation.

At the half-way mark, Shansco Athletic is at the top. It's a place they've been before-the last two seasons they were two and six points away, respectively-but when Khalikov taps in a Wimmer cross and breaks the tie against Becis City to go to the top of the table in front of a sea of red, it feels like a revelation. No southern team has ever won BCF, despite a close call practically every time the league gets down to the wire. Could this be the year?

Nine games left. Four has become two at the top, with the chances of a third consecutive title looking a bit slimmer for an unusually-muted Sullivan; nine goals in seventeen games is decent but nowhere near his typical pace. Shansco takes a costly loss in the derby against Iron but hangs on to the top spot, but City is right there, and they're the ones with the experience of being in a title hunt. Meanwhile, Palace is the betting favorite to go down, sadly, although there's still a possibility that they could escape.

Two games left, and suddenly Pyramid is just three points off the lead-five games ago, it was ten points, but a WWWWW streak solves a lot of problems, and the team that constantly seems to peak at the right time is doing it one more time. Meanwhile, Princess' title run is over, a massive disappointment from the most expensive roster in the league; the stake in the heart is a 1-1 draw at home against Shansco Iron where Eli Sheve is caught way out of defensive position as Iron score the equalizer. Alex Moll resigns effective immediately to avoid being fired. Athletic's lead has waxed and waned, but it always seems to stick at one or two points; just enough to win, never enough to feel comfortable. There is no comfort at the bottom of the standings either, as five teams could potentially get relegated; Donrod holds the anti-tiebreaker, but a single win would put themselves or Akinis out of harm's way, and leave Frumston, Cantrill, and Annex fighting for one safe spot and one playoff.

And suddenly, as quickly as it began, it's all over; the relegation fighters, Annex and Akinis, the third and fourth teams in Becis are the ones to break the hearts of City and Pyramid. Athletic watch those games on TV with a mix of shock and glee; all they need to do is take care of business, and they do, with two early goals from Bright and Rosales allowing them to take the heat down to a simmer. It's a victory that's a long time coming for Aiden Wallace, whose stone facade breaks down into tears as he takes in the accomplishment. It wasn't a perfect season; pending the final day, Athletic will end with a below-average points total for a league winner, and there were constantly moments where it seemed like it was all going to fall apart, but it never did, and that's what being a champion takes. With the top of the table finished off, the bottom looks to finish their rock-fight; two slots for four teams.

The final day is a bit disappointing; Annex and Palace both get scored on early, neither is able to put anything together against Princess and Mechanic teams that both just want the season to be over and aren't going to do anything cute, and that's that; Palace is relegated for Becis Dynasty, and Becis Annex plays Order of the Bear for a slot. Princess do end up with second place, as Pyramid and City, with nothing to play for, take their draws; it's a second straight second place, and although it's not fully representative of a season where they were probably fourth-best overall, it still stings.

It's a bit ironic that Amine Bouquet's last game for the squad was the one where Akinis won their first piece of silverware, defeating Motan to win the not-particularly-prestigious Girard Invitational Cup; it was less ironic and more frustrating when Don Michaels quit on the club a couple weeks afterward, citing "fundamental differences with ownership" (i.e. a tiny budget). Akinis feels like they peaked just a couple years too early, before that sweet IFCF money began to flow in; although they've always been good at scouting, it's a strategy that requires a lot of luck along with the skill to succeed for an extended period of time. The squad will be hard-working and well-disciplined, with South Newlandian transplant Adrian Sommer being key there, and the full-back duo, Jason Vin moving over to the left to accomodate new signing and pace-and-power monster Muhammad Usman, is one of the best in the league. The main issue is that so much of this team's attack relies on John Zhu, which would be a problem even if he wasn't 36 years old.

After bearly escaping relegation, Annex knew they needed to improve the squad if they had any future in the BCF. And they did! Slightly. Maybe. Kind of. Calvin Liu was never particularly impressive with Star Unicorn, but he does at least have a league title to his name, while Lee Walker was legitimately good despite being on Cantrill's ultimately-doomed Palace. On the other hand, everyone's a year older, and Raf Sleever decided he would rather get the hell out than deal with another relegation fight. The good news is that it's difficult to be the worst team in the league just by mathematics alone, and Annex has shown that they are at least comprehensively better than BCL squads, but it'll be another season of being a speed bump for City and Princess to trip over.

After tailing Shansco by a point or two for practically the entire season, City faded at the end, with 4th place not being an accurate reflection of how the season went but being disappointing all the same. The good news is that sometimes improving a roster can be as easy as ABC-in this case, Axmund-Becis City. Kundert and Austin bring international experience to a team facing the Challengers Cup for the first time and stabilize a team missing Greg Callahan for the first time in nearly two decades. It was expected that this would be the biggest move of their off-season, along with the requisite signings of Robertson college grads Eagles and Fonderman, but then Grady Roces became available, and a deal was struck extremely quickly. It's a precarious situation for both Roces and the team-although he's an incredible player, a brilliant athlete with an ability to create advantages on-ball that only a few players in the league can match, he's also played his entire career with the greatest goal-scorer in BCF history. Now, he'll be relied upon to score at a solid rate along with everything else. Even if it doesn't quite work out, the defense is good enough that it's hard to imagine City slipping all that much, but if it all comes together, that third league trophy is well within reach.

Putting together a squad post-promotion is always going to be hard, but Dynasty have done a hell of a job. It's not perfect, of course, but Bacha and Sargent are two legitimate threats to any defense in the country, and even though the defense is cobbled from spare parts it should be well-organized enough to not completely fall apart in the face of resistance. Owner Daniel Quarrell wants the team's fanbase to become bigger than City's and Princess's eventually; step one of that goal is simply staying in the BCF for a few seasons, and this squad seems ready to do that.

It's an inflection point of a season for a team with a strange obsession with finishing in even-numbered places. After two seasons of getting off to a strong early start before flaming out, the Mechs did the only thing worse, limping to 6th place while never really appearing to be championship, or even IFCF, contenders. Both Garnett and Morel were rumored to be leaving after Oscar Jones got sacked for a journeyman assistant coach-yet somehow, whether due to Doyle's charisma or a simple lack of offers from other squads, the core held together. A defense with 4 Bohr NT-capped players (Morel, Garnett, Thatcher, and Goodwin), all in their primes, looks to once again wreak havoc on opposing strikers, and while elder statesman forward Wilson Connelly is gone (immediately taking a BBS analyst job), there should still be enough goal-scoring prowess to acquire victories. The issue is that Shansco and Weaver are threatening to eclipse their southern counterpart-and without IFCF football, these players won't stay forever.

Putting five at the back and still giving up the most goals in the league was nothing short of a disaster for Murphy Riedel-Price, and it was only by the skins of their teeth that Donrod avoided the drop last season. There's a bit of change in the lineup-Jones is experimenting with converting center-back Heinz into a holding midfielder, and Montojo has come in from BCL mid-table side Burke City to add a pinch of goal-scoring pop, but a lot of this season is going to come down to right back Evela-Gavax Den. It could be argued that, outside of the league's true superstars (Sullivan, Girard, Harrow), no single player is going to be as important to their team as Evela-Gavax will be for Donrod-they're obviously destined for bigger and better things, and Jones has come in and given Donrod a tactic where they're expected to be a defensive anchor while also being the squad's primary source of pace, creativity, and all those other good offensive qualities. It's a lot of responsibility for a 23-year-old, but with a pretty bare-bones cabinet of players otherwise, it's not like they have much to lose.

The bottom of the BCF feels a bit like a really shitty horror movie-everyone is aware that they're in grave danger, but nobody either willing or able to do much about it. Frumston's biggest move was signing a 19-year-old from a (admittedly very very good at football) foreign country-Ehsan has not commented on whether he knew what he was walking into, but he should at least be a solid BCF-quality player. Rufus Tennyson-mania is well and truly dead, but the elderly winger and "Most Interesting Man in Bohr" is still a reliable ticket-seller, if not a remotely reliable prescence. Otherwise, it's a BSL-quality roster, with BSL-quality results. It'll probably take an Evan Willis masterclass to keep this team out of at least the relegation playoff; that's something he has the capacity for, but being your squad's main chance of points for 26 games has to wear you down.

If you discard the elephant on the back-line, this Heavenly Princess roster looks clearly better than last year's second-place squad. Bernard-Bigras is not the same type of threat as Sheve was at right-back, but she's a massive threat in her own right, and her picking up RB minutes allows Sheve to play at his natural position (takilante with Bohrian characteristics) much more often. The depth is better also; Herringbone, Kruger, Terry, and Michel could all start for mid-table BCF teams tomorrow, and Princess' highest wage budget in the league means even their third-tier squad members are better than average. Orlan Healy, although slightly past his prime, was never particularly pace-reliant for a winger anyway, and has played at such a consistent level (only player to be named to the BCF Team of the Year all seven seasons) that it's hard to see him falling off that much. They're the preseason betting favorites for a reason. The only problem, of course, is that they've been the preseason betting favorites (for a reason) for the last three years, with nothing to show for it (ironically, in 1999 when they won the championship, Becis City were narrowly favored). It's that specific type of top-team desperation that led them to the Girard player-manager announcement; surely, the talent will be allowed to speak for itself when there's nobody in a suit on the side-line.

There's a common theory that Motan should be the best club in Bohr, a constant championship threat with a trophy case that eclipses all its competitors. The idea is this: Northern Bohr produces a shit-ton of football talent (the college championship being NWP-Donnell speaks to this), as much or more than the Becis metro area and the Incol River valley do. Unlike those regions, however, Motan is clearly the biggest and wealthiest team in the region; Becis City and Heavenly Princess divide up the talents from the Constellation Colleges, Shansco and Colside are in a constant war over anyone with southern roots, but only sickos are going to choose Frumston or Donrod over the Cyclones. So far, it hasn't quite worked out that way, mainly because the college system means that players get lots and lots of control over where they want to play professionally, and Motan is not particularly attractive to 22-year-olds. Even with that debuff, though, the current Motan squad has three NT starters, all of whom were Motan originals (technically Soto was raised in the northeast before moving to the city as a teenager, but Harrow and Gosling were born and bred here), and the addition of collegiate extra-time hero Cain Calais and experienced second banana Cole Sargent gives Neal Heston even more tools in the toolbox to mess around with. Chuck Radler is famously capricious, and him and Heston were both scarred by their time at Heavenly Princess, but this squad doesn't need to rely on him fully anymore. They're not going to be favored for the championship, but Motan can beat anybody in the country; maybe in a few years, that theory won't be so incorrect after all.

Some writers-not this one, of course, but some writers-wrote Athletic off last season as being washed-up, too old to make a serious title run. Instead, a better term would be seasoned. A combination of veteran chemistry, individual brilliance from Vasily Khalikov, and just a bit of luck meant that after a hell of a fight, the Firemen finally found a twelth-round knockout to dispatch Becis City and win their first BCF trophy. A lot of teams would rest on their laurels and try to keep the squad together, but with an average age on the wrong side of 30, a few changes had to be made; the core of Good and Khalikov has been augmented by college Player of the Year Kaleo Solomon; in a land of on-ball conductors like Khalikov, Roces, and Schuyler, he's very much an off-ball midfielder, someone who never stops looking for opportunities to run in from midfield and score. Serdar Admiri, meanwhile, is about as pure of a striker as you'll find in the BCF; the Squornshelan has put up solid numbers in Taxhavn and Pasarga despite being on somewhat hopeless rosters each time, and while he'll probably be more Plan B than Plan A here, he'll surely find a way to get his contributions in. Jocelyne Astier, meanwhile, is expected to replace the aging Oskar Bright as soon as she gets acclimated to the wing-back role. It's an impressively-upgraded roster overall from the prior season, and Athletic should expect to make a hell of a title defense.

Shansco Iron has always been known for strong defense and not much else, and last season's squad certainly lived up to the stereotype-tied for the best goals against in the league, dead last in goals for. They haven't done much to change their outlook, but why mess with what football pervert Noah Brance would consider perfection? The 3-5-2 is much more of a 5-3-2, really, with Michaels shifting the squad even farther back, although Bonner is legitimately very talented and his surprising NT call-up was justified if you were watching Iron matches. If you weren't, though, who could blame you? Expect more of the same this season-solid enough to be safe from relegation and maybe make a Girard Invitational run and not much else.

It's an abrupt step back for the team that was at the top of the world for two straight seasons, but for the first time ever Pyramid is on the back foot. Rumors of official investigations of their questionable transfer activity finally became reality a couple months back, and although it's not clear whether it'll lead to anything more than a slap on the wrist, it seems to have spooked the team's ownership into selling a couple big names-Roces and Sargent are out. Even more importantly, nobody is in to replace them; Merriwether and Martinez-Paulson come with no real pedigree, and during their occasional substitute appearances last season they never showed the level that would be expected for a starter on a title contender. The positives-Sullivan in front as a one-man scoring dynamo, Simpson's leadership qualities, Warnor never putting a foot wrong on defense-are still the positives, and it seems ridiculous to rule a team that's never finished below 4th out of the title conversation, but in an off-season where all of their rivals got better, Pyramid very clearly got worse.

It wasn't always pretty, but Wannick managed to equal their best performance ever, getting their head above the BCF waters for some amount of time, and it doesn't seem like they have any intentions of stopping. Acquiring Palaven, looking for starter minutes after being forced out of Princess, was an absolute steal, as the former Team-of-the-Year-caliber midfielder still has at least a couple seasons left of prime performance in him, even if he seems somewhat out of place in the environment. The front four remains unchanged, although Paz, from South Colside, offers significantly more flexibility than De la Cruz and might simply be better. Wannick still has money problems, and with the current make-up of the league going upwards from 8th is probably the single hardest bit of movement any team can take on. Still, Akinis went from the worst team in the league to nearly winning the whole thing a couple seasons back; even though they ended up regressing, they provided a road map for a team like Wannick to do something similar.

In a league where it sometimes feels like every other team has a talismanic number ten-Schuyler at Princess, Roces and Howard at Pyramid, Khalikov at Athletic, Zhu at Akinis, Gonzales at Colside, Ray-Jay at City-it felt like the one thing Weaver was missing. Ding is a fine striker, yet the offense still floundered due to a lack of that connective play that was necessary. Herbert, Lorenz, and Fulton are all quite good, but they're all a similar type of player-athletic, hard-working midfielders who excel in getting the "dirty work" done, and Alex Valdez often looked like a full-back, the role he played in college, instead of a true left-winger. Enter Armani Giusti, a prolific Jardin striker who showed just enough creative juice for Tsai to feel comfortable placing him behind Ding as a connector. Giusti is tall, a good 6'5", which has made him a difficult player to analyze-not particularly good as a target man, he should really be thought of as a jumbo-sized version of those playmakers mentioned earlier, making up for a high center of gravity with impressive levels of finesse. It's yet another piece that seems to fit into place for Weaver, but in criticisms similar to those of their stadium's namesake, potential and good words have to be backed up by action at some point.

The Mitandir Invitational (formerly known as the Girard Invitational) is a thirty-two team randomly-seeded single-elimination cup, featuring every BCF and BCL team as well as the two best college teams in the country. Games are played at the selected home team's stadium until the finals, where they are played at a neutral site; this year, the chosen site was OSO Auto Stadium, home of Colside Mechanic.

Donnell College is the headline, shocking Shansco Iron at home in the first college > BCF upset in the modern era; the rest of the round is basically chalk.

The First 10 Weeks: One Winner, One Loser

Winner: Spite

Becis Dynasty-specifically their owner, although certain players haven’t helped the image-came into the league with the idea that they would be able to talk trash about every other team in the league and face zero consequences for it. This, as it turned out, was not true. Dynasty were favorites for their opening game, in their newly renovated stadium, against the team from the other side of the city that are thought of as everything they’re not-subdued, calm, polite. Unfortunately for them, Akinis showed that they could be mean as hell when they wanted to be; after going up 2-1 in the first half, they scored four straight within ten minutes, culminating in Michael McCann bowing to a crowd that was throwing all sorts of trash at him. Somehow, this wasn’t Dynasty’s worst loss. Of all the teams Daniel Quarrell had talked about wanting to eclipse, Becis City was the one that had the most vitriol behind it, calling their fans “[redacted] dumb [redacted]s” who “don’t understand that they’re rooting for their own destruction”. City vs. Dynasty was instantly circled on most fans’ calendars, and its first edition really did not disappoint. When Brock Mullock body-checked Dev Eagles into the sideline advertising early, it seemed like the game was bound to be a slow, multiple-card affair; instead, Eagles got up, brushed himself off, and proceeded to curl the ensuing free kick straight to Jace Simmons’ feet for the first goal. That opened up the floodgates. At the half, it was six goals; by full time, it was eight, and probably could’ve been ten if City wasn’t trying to humiliate Dynasty instead of merely winning. The fifth team from Becis is not quite in a relegation spot, but it’s certainly been a sobering experience for them.

Loser: Jaxon Girard, and the Entire Concept of a Player-Manager

How did it come to this? It was always expected that the end of Girard’s playing career would be a celebration of all of his achievements-his leadership, his championship season, his large case of individual awards, and his status as one of the faces of Bohrian football. Then the off-season happened, and Girard took a massive chance, becoming the league’s first player-manager. People had doubts, and Heavenly Princess has been known for notoriously slow starts, but nobody expected it to go this badly-seven points from ten games, two points away from simply being at the bottom of the table. Girard’s tearful retirement as a player to “focus on his managerial role”, announced on short notice a few hours before game time, was the only thing that could preserve his job. So what has gone wrong? Everything, really. The main issue is simply that the team looks old; Matteo Dipper has hit the wall, Bernard-Bigras has completely spurned her defensive responsibilities, and Girard, with all due respect, probably should have retired before the season instead of having to retire in the middle of it. Even outside of them, though, practically everyone is in a funk; Sheve is jogging instead of running, Healy has made some truly horrendous tackles, and young defensive midfielder Kirby Williams has gone to social media to plead for the team to make changes. Emergency signing CB Reynolds Brumlow-Sherwood has some large shoes to fill, and Girard’s position as manager at all is in question if no major turn-around happens soon.

Trending Up: Although Heavenly Princess has looked like the title contenders they were always meant to be post-Jaxon Girard's retirement as a player, the real story is Wannick FC, who have gone on an incredible eight-win streak to hit the top of the table. Wannick House, now the hottest ticket in town, has become a pressure cooker, an array of sights and sounds that only the home crew know how to deal with, with new midfielder Richard Palaven and manager Marcus Bowen being hailed as the architects of what would be the most shocking championship in the BCF's young history. There's been a bit of luck involved, of course-all of Wannick's last five wins have been by a single goal, the kind of fortune that is hard to imagine lasting for an entire season-but even a Challengers Cup slot would be an incredible step forward for a team that's never finished in the top half of the league, let alone fighting for a title.

Trending Down: Colside Mechanic failed to lose a game in their first ten, and although six draws is an impossible record to be completely happy with, they were comfortably placed in third with the league's best defense. But their first loss, to the newly-resurgent Princess squad, was made even worse when star right-back Matty Garnett pulled up with a knee injury in the 80th minute; with him out, the team that only conceded five goals in the first ten games has now conceded eight in their last five. Garnett is expected to return within the next month, but whether he-or Morel, or Thatcher, or even Goodwin-returns to Mechanic is a different question entirely. While they're only two points off of a IFCF spot-a signal of the squish in the middle of the table as much as anything-it's a tough hill to climb.

Donnell College's run ends, but Perets FC, after barely surviving a challenge from Rynnco, adds insult to Colside Mechanic's injury, making them the only BCL team in the last four; along with them are Cinderella-killers Becis Dynasty, a consistently successful Weaver Union squad looking for their first piece of hardware, and the stalwarts of Shansco Athletic.

When Wannick holds on to a 0-0 draw at Shansco, it feels like magic; although they lose their win streak and clearly get outclassed by the midfield passing of Khalikov, Soloman, and Rosales, they barely hold on to their position at the top of the table. When Wannick then goes back to their own House and cleanly takes care of Becis City, it feels like something different. There's an energy in the air there; even though Grady Roces (who has adapted to leading the line utterly perfectly) strikes first, it never feels like Wannick is demoralized. At the beginning of the second half, Rafe Paz, who took the starting job from De la Cruz exactly as Wannick morphed into the best team in the league, is the star, contributing an assist and a goal as they rebound for a 3-1 win and a four-point lead at the top. It doesn't last-two straight draws, the second to a Becis Dynasty squad who manage to slow the game down and drag Wannick to their level, mean that City are on top by goal difference as the league goes into its home stretch. After those top three, it's Colside Mechanic, who with Garnett once again healthy have stormed back to contention. Then it's St. Natasha Pyramid, who still have the best player in the league, and might be the best team in the league on a minute-to-minute basis-but are feeling the consequences of a thin roster. They've led in most of their games, but have watched so many wins turn into draws-perhaps they're simply one, or two, or three pieces away from a third championship. Six games left; anything can happen now.

Wannick holds serve, bringing their run to sixteen games without a loss; a scrappy Incol River Shootout ends with a (somewhat questionable) Admiri penalty as the only goal, keeping Athletic in the hunt. Becis City goes into Donrod looking for a win and comes out empty-handed, once again flipping the top of the table. Wannick is five games away.

Seventeen games unbeaten-and yet it's not what Wannick need here, the draw feels like a loss, and even though Shansco Iron have gradually opened up this season Noah Brance still loves a 0-0 where he can get it. The other Shansco team face a similar fate, Arnold Harrow putting together one more masterclass in a career full of them. It's a flip from last week, and this time Becis City are the only team in the top 3 to take care of business against a formidable Weaver side; they lead Wannick by six in goal difference, probably insurmountable, meaning that they'll simply need to be beaten down the stretch. Elsewhere, Dynasty pick up their second straight win to remove most relegation fears, Princess continues to claw their way back up the table with Girard in a suit instead of a jersey, and Annex and Frumston play one of the worst games in BCF history.

Fielding Memorial is everything Wannick House isn't - large, looming, austere, looking more like a national monument than a stadium. It's fitting, then, that it's where Wannick FC's miraculous streak finally ends, Towson Turner knocking the last goal past a diving Buzby to take them out. Ironically, the team it helps most is Princess's biggest rival, as Becis City play a clean game against relegation candidates Frumston to go three points clear with three to play, along with that all-important goal difference tiebreaker. Annex, the other team likely to go down along with Frumston, roll over to Athletic. After the top three, there's one spot left for IFCF football, a spot that Colside seems to have the jump on, but Union, Pyramid, and Princess aren't going to make it easy for them.

The game of the week sees Becis City and Shansco Athletic match up in a game that could decide the entire fate of the season. Shansco holds the possession advantage but has trouble making it count, with the Katzeburgians Austin and Kundert making a couple really important stops; City's counter-attacks aren't perfect, but Fonderman streaks down the right and finds just enough daylight for Simmons to convert just before halftime. The lead doesn't last long as Solomon hits one from the edge of the box to tie the score, and that's where the score remains; it's a draw that benefits Becis more than Shansco, but Wannick has what seems like a guaranteed three points to put them just one back. But Wannick is tight, nervous, and a scruffy Vaught header turns their "guaranteed three points" into zero. Suddenly, they're almost completely out of the title race and have work to do just to clinch international football. Frumston and Annex are locked into the relegation places, with the only decision point being who plays in the playoff and who goes down for certain, but all eyes are at the top. All Becis City really needs is a single win out of two games to clinch their third title, more than any other BCF team...

...but they won't find it in St. Natasha, as the other team with two rings cleanly dispatches them. The title race will come down to the last day-and it won't include Wannick, who have now lost three straight after their run and drop all the way down to 5th. Moving up are Weaver and Colside; Weaver's season has been relatively quiet, and it took a little bit for Tsai Chih-Chou to figure out exactly what he has with this roster, but they're poised for their best finish in team history. Mechanic's season, meanwhile, is a bit bittersweet, as Morel, Garnett, and Thatcher have committed to exploring their options during the transfer window; it's unlikely that they'll be able to keep all of them, but their form when everyone's healthy has been as good as it's ever been.

Final Matchday: The Games

Wannick FC vs. Weaver Union
The biggest Weaver Derby in league history, a win guarantees a IFCF spot for both teams. Wannick have lost their last three, while Weaver have won their last three.

Donrod City vs. Frumston 74
Frumston is guaranteed to at least play in the relegation play-off; a draw would guarantee that they're not outright relegated, but that's not likely to happen either way. Donrod have nothing to play for.

Shansco Iron vs. Shansco Athletic
Iron have nothing to play for except the opportunity to deny their cross-town rival a championship; Athletic need to get a better result than Becis City (win if they draw, draw if they lose) to win the championship. If they lose, they could plausibly drop all the way down to 4th.

Becis Dynasty vs. St. Natasha Pyramid
Pyramid need a win here and other results to go their way for an IFCF spot; Dynasty have nothing to play for.

Becis City vs. Akinis FC
A win 99.99999% guarantees Becis City a championship, while a draw or a loss force them to hope that Shansco Athletic stumble as well. Akinis have nothing material to play for, but last season they ended Becis City's title bid; they would love to do the same one more time.

Becis Annex vs. Heavenly Princess
Annex need a win to have a chance to not get automatically relegated; Princess need a win and other results to go their way to get an IFCF spot.

Motan FC vs. Colside Mechanic
A win guarantees Colside an IFCF spot; Motan have nothing to play for.

Every game has at least something on the line, but as they kick off approximately simultaneously, Becis and Shansco are the highlights; either Becis wins their third BCF championship and becomes the outright most successful team in the modern era, or Shansco goes back-to-back.

1' - GOAL-Motan 1-0 Colside-Immediately! Just a brilliant pass from Justin Azor, who finds Cole Sargent making a run after about thirty seconds; Sargent hits a hell of a strike, and now Colside have to play from behind if they want to play internationally.

5' - Both Shansco Iron and Akinis are comfortably willing to park the bus against their high-level foes; Muhammad Usman just took about 30 seconds to take a throw-in, garnering a healthy amount of boos from the sold-out Becis City crowd.

9' - GOAL-Becis Dynasty 1-0 St. Natasha Pyramid-A few minutes after Cole Sargent scores, his brother Kyle pulls off practically the same move, with Tom Bacha playing one long and Kyle half-volley lobbing it just over Dubois's arms. Pyramid were 7th before the goal, and they're 7th after it, but it's a moral loss.

15' - And there's that first bit of chippiness, with Usman and Stevie Deer both getting yellows within a couple minutes. The Shansco game has been just as physical, but the ref there seems to be a bit more inclined to swallow his whistle.

20' - Weaver Union nearly broke through in the derby, with Ding turning and firing one from a pretty dangerous position; it went just off the post and skidded out of play

26' - GOAL-Motan 2-0 Colside Mechanic-Radler! A brilliant shot from twenty-five yards out, Morel got a hand to it but couldn't quite make it stop. It's not over yet, but you can feel the fans in Colside shutting down.

27' - GOAL-Shansco Iron 0-1 Shansco Athletic-And that's what everyone was waiting for, and it's the team's two foreigners who manage to get it done; Astier finds enough space to float a cross that Admiri gets on the end of, and while the Squornshelan's numbers haven't been quite as good as initially expected, a goal like that makes it all worth it. Now Athletic just has to hold this lead, and hope Akinis holds as well.

29' - GOAL-Becis Annex 0-1 Heavenly Princess-With Colside and Pyramid struggling, the door is open for Heavenly Princess to clean up against dead-last-place Becis Annex. Sheve's goal puts them in 3rd place, which would normally be a disappointment but they would gladly take after beginning the season in 12th.

31' - GOAL-Becis Annex 1-1 Heavenly Princess-Ah, never mind then. Harrison Hake just flat-out beats Reynolds Brumlow-Sherwood, a mediocre Zephael center-back hastily put into the first team after Girard's retirement, and suddenly Princess is back to 6th.

33' - GOAL-Becis Dynasty 1-1 St. Natasha Pyramid-It was always going to be Jamie Sullivan, wasn't it? Don Howard's long shot comes off Camden Murphy's hands, and Sullivan is, as he always is, right where he needs to be to convert the putback.

35' - Becis City have heard about the goal in Shansco and are pushing even harder now, but without real success; the only progress they've made are another couple yellow cards for Akinis, this time for John Zhu and the rookie Adrian Sommer (who's been absolutely everywhere so far).

38' - GOAL-Shansco Iron 1-1 Shansco Athletic-But they might not need to push at all; Bonner's corner somehow gets past everyone's head and falls to Lou Michaels on the other side, who nearly fumbles it but manages to poke it into the bottom-left corner. Athletic are once again on the back foot, and Iron are once again in their wheelhouse.

45' - Weaver once again with a close chance, this time Giusti passing Ding through to a one-on-one, but Ding is just a bit slow on the draw and Buzby manages to close him down. Half-time whistles begin blowing, and with 45-ish minutes to play, this is what the top seven looks like:

The main difference is Colside's early collapse putting both Weaver teams in the top four, but the championship and two IFCF slots are still up for grabs.

50' - Nearly disaster for Becis City, as another great Sommer interrupt leads to a dangerous counter, but McCann scoops it over the bar and the threat is nullified; despite Iron's goal, City still need to not lose here to have any real hope

55' - The ball's in the back of the net for Shansco Athletic but the whistle blew as the shot was being taken, it wasn't an egregiously bad offsides but Admiri was pretty clearly beyond Newell; still 1-1

59' - GOAL-Wannick FC 0-1 Weaver Union-just a sloppy pass by Joseph Andeme, Giusti reads the play, bursts forward, and uses all of his large frame to power one in. It's still loud in Wannick House, but there's no heart in it anymore, just the same piped-in noise that there always was. A month ago, Wannick were in 1st place; now they're staring down 7th.

60' - GOAL-Becis Dynasty 1-2 St. Natasha Pyramid-being at home, the Dynasty boys could get away with a decent bit of pushing and shoving against Sullivan, but Creasy finally gets caught and Sullivan duly puts away the penalty. Pyramid have never finished below 4th, and they're going to fight as hard as they possibly can to keep that record. Colside Mechanic, still floundering in Motan, were in 4th place again for approximately 30 seconds before their hopes immediately get dashed again.

65' - Akinis are piling up yellows now, with Vin and Ellinger both getting theirs. City hasn't been at their best-Roces, in particular, has been near-invisible despite one of the league's best overall seasons-but neither has Shansco Athletic. They're about 30 minutes away from a championship, but a goal would be really, really nice.

69' - GOAL-Becis Dynasty 1-3 St. Natasha Pyramid-it's a goal that probably doesn't matter for placement, but it's nice nonetheless, Don Howard this time cutting in and firing a bullet near-post; if (when?) Sullivan's current contract ends, Howard seems like he'll make a fine replacement, not offering nearly as much physicality but making up for it somewhat with unpredictability while sharing Sully's gift for positioning.

72' - GOAL-Becis Annex 2-1 Heavenly Princess-Another defensive lapse, this time Bernard-Bigras giving Cardenas all the time in the world to find Bacha, who makes the extra pass to Nestorek for a shockingly pretty goal; Princess move down to 7th and Girard's seat gets just a bit warmer.

75' - Vasily Khalikov's words of disgust after sending a shot into Row Z get past the censors, another missed opportunity for a team that needs a winner. Shansco Iron have had maybe ten passes completed in the last ten minutes, but they have what they need, and Athletic haven't had a real chance since their opening salvo.

80' - It was bound to happen, and John Zhu gets his second yellow after what can only generously be described as a "tackle" on Ray-Jay Turner. Now down to ten men and without their best creator, any hope that Athletic fans had of Akinis getting a win are completely out the window; they'll have to do it themselves.

85' - GOAL-Becis Annex 2-2 Heavenly Princess-Princess save face and move back to 6th, but-

86' - GOAL-Shansco Iron 1-2 Shansco Athletic-but it's happened! Kaleo Solomon may not have been able to lead Donnell College to a championship, but the rookie gets exactly what he needed here, timing a run perfectly to get service from Khalikov and powering it into the bottom-left corner. It's one of the most important goals in BCF history, and in miragecoordinator Stadium Becis City fans are slowly realizing that they need a goal now.

90' - GOAL-Becis Annex 2-3 Heavenly Princess-Stoppage time is upon us, and while Becis are still nowhere near a goal, Princess find their winner. But remember what I said about that third Pyramid goal probably not mattering? Pyramid and Princess are now tied on points, with Pyramid being ahead-for 4th place and the final Challengers Cup slot-by a single goal. Princess fans will fully admit that they don't deserve to play internationally given their start, but they say that every year.

90+1' - There's almost no stoppage time in Shansco and six minutes of it in Becis, meaning that Athletic fans will have to wait just a little bit to see if their lead will hold. City have a corner...

90+2' - Which gets cleared by Vin for another corner...

90+3' - GOAL-Becis Annex 2-4 Heavenly Princess-it's a goal on the other side of Becis, but it's a massively important goal all the same, Towson Turner getting on the end of one more Bernard-Bigras masterpiece and winning the 1v1-Princess have gone from 7th to 4th within eight minutes, now holding the tiebreaker on Pyramid on goals for. Athletic's win is confirmed, as are the ultimately-disappointing Weaver derby and Colside's failure; All eyes are on Becis City now.

-back four is unchanged and knows how to work together, even if there's a bit of worry that team captain Haider is worn down

-Coffee is not exactly a Bacha replacement, being better defensively and much worse on-ball, but is quite good in his own right and will be slotted into a similar role

-Biggest news of the offseason: Orlan Healy, one of the two or three best players in BCF history, was shipped to Abanhfleft after a long-running feud with Girard finally came to a head

-Kang Hyo-Seung is a massive get, a potential Quebecois NTer that brings the exact mix of athleticism and aggressiveness that the new-look defense needs while also allowing fellow countrywoman Bernard-Bigras to move to her more natural position at right wing
-Leif Fox is another star in the making from the Zephael-Order collegiate pipeline; if you didn't look closely you might think they just cloned 22-year-old Healy and put him back in on the left
-It's a young team, and Turner and Sheve aren't exactly leaders, but if it comes together this version of the Princesses has an even higher ceiling than the last one

Bohr Championship Football: Season Ten Previews, Part 1/3

Season nine of Bohr Championship Football was, all things considered, a step back for the league. One of McGeorge Waters' campaign promises was to break up the Bohr Broadcasting Service, the previously public television network that had shown nearly every BCF game since the league's beginning, and his election as Bohr's new president threw the back half of the season into chaos, with alternate deals being put together often under unclear and questionable terms to make sure the games could be seen at all; if you wanted to watch every game during the league's penultimate week, you would have needed to spend 150 bohrers on various different television packages and streaming services. Understandably, many fans gave up on watching altogether, and the end of the season lacked the intrigue to draw them back in; Shansco Athletic waltzed to a third consecutive championship, scoring the third-most points in league history, and there were no real surprises in the rest of the top 4. Which is a shame, because the football was the best it's ever been. The growing international contingent (many of whom are now in legal limbo because of Waters' attempted immigration crackdown), as well as a series of Kytlerian Peninsulae-inspired rule changes, caused Bohrian football to look more open and sophisticated than ever. The tenth season now approaches, and many of the stars of the early years have either already retired or are on their way out. In their place, a new set of younger players-Kaleo Solomon, Leif Fox, Armani Giusti, Abraham Norberg, and many others-are prepared to take the reins.

It wouldn't be 100% accurate to say that Akinis has stagnated-they did, after all, jump two spots from 10th to 8th. It would, however, be 99% accurate, as the Deacons finished on 28 points as opposed to the prior season's 27, which is not exactly the type of improvement you're looking for. It's probably unfair to write Leach off entirely, as he's still quite young for a coach and has done a good job developing the Akinis young talent, but the games can be tough to watch at times if you're not a particular fan of bone-crunching tackles and long balls upfield. (If you are a fan of those two things, Adrian Sommer is absolutely the player for you!) The main personnel change is the retirement of John Zhu, who even at 37 and barely moving still led the squad in assists last season; William Budding comes in from the relegated Incol River to effectively take his spot, but while he has a little bit of Zhu's vision and flair his technical ability is not in the same stratosphere. The defense should be better than it was, if only because the youth movement has another year under their belts, and Fiver and Usman coming down the right is a genuine threat, but it's hard to see this team moving very much. Maybe they can shoot for 29 points this time?

With a comprehensive 5-2 aggregate win over Incol River, Becis Annex became the first club to win the promotion playoff, as well as the first club to be relegated and then promoted again, as well as causing the S10 league to have an astounding 5 Becis metro area clubs. The squad has a decent bit of carryover from the last time they were in the top tier, with Liu most notably benefiting from the lower level experience after being thrown into the fire his first season; Austin also moved him just a bit inside to fit his 3-4-2-1-ish tactic, a change that has fit him nicely. The new additions from last time are even more interesting, though. Frompang is a bit slow but can hold his own and has pretty advanced ball-skills for a center-back, Whitaker is an unflashy but effective poacher, and Rhys Taylor has been a revelation, a mediocre full-back who Austin saw something in and transformed into a monster of a wing-back. The CBs outside of Frompang are a bit sketchy, and they're going to give up a lot of goals, but the team has at least enough quality to not go down immediately once again.

After Fischer was criticized for not having enough structure, Michaels' first season had, if anything, too much structure. Noted out-of-structure playmaker Ray-Jay Turner saw little to no play and unceremoniously left after the season, and Grady Roces was placed into a more straight-up no.9 role than his previous iterations; while he adapted to it well and won a Golden Boot for his troubles, it never felt like the team as a whole benefitted quite as much. They ended with the same number of points as last season, but losing 2nd place on GD to Heavenly Princess stung just a bit. The solution to those structural issues, Michaels believes, is Jackie Ding. The long-time Weaver Union striker allows Roces to play his natural role and the squad to fit into a more classical 4-4-2 shape, with Bacha and Brunner as an extremely powerful engine to control possession and let Roces and the wingers to do their thing. The other problem Michaels had to solve was the retirement of long-time captain and club legend Jonathan Haider, and this didn't go quite as well. Vandy Vaughn has come in from Donrod to plug the hole, but the communication and leadership that Haider provided will be hard to replace.

Despite a number of player losses and controversies, Dan Quarrell's pet project has slowly motored up the tables, although they're still a long ways away from legitimately challenging the City/Princess duopoly at the top of Becis. This off-season, they sold keeper Solomon Meeks to Princess (a transfer that they probably overpaid for), but did manage to get one over on City by signing Ray-Jay Turner, an overqualified creator who immediately becomes the star that this team revolves around both as a player and as a personality. Coffee and Wolfe should be able to cover for Turner's adventurism in the midfield while also looking and sounding like the main characters in a cop show, while Sargent is a decent finisher with a bit of on-ball ability of his own. It's an exciting enough team that should be able to improve from last season and continue their way up the table.

While their rivals up the river in Shansco were busy winning three straight championships, Colside were busy firing three straight managers-Caleb Fischer became the latest casualty after the club's worst professional season ever, a 9th place disaster that was even worse than it looked. It's somewhat surprising that Bowen would take the job in the first place, both because of the lack of job security and because Wannick finished comfortably above Colside last season, but the resources available were enticing enough to go for it. That being said, there were no major acquisitions in the off-season (Mularczyk is the closest, a high-quality winger from the Air Force Aces), combined with a couple of meaningful losses in fringe NTer Glenn Goodwin departure up north and Alexander Korystov's retirement. Bowen's style requires a lot of buy-in, but he has the midfield for it, with Syaliza Sazali/Shearer/Gonzales/Mularczyk all being able to play with the aggressiveness and tempo that he demands. The issue is that for a style that really needs center-forward involvement, both Pohland and Calabrese just don't feel dynamic enough, while also not being particularly good at scoring goals. The talent on this squad, and the money available, is too good for it to continue to descend the way it has, but it'll take a lot of work to turn Colside back into a championship contender.

Last season was bad but narrowly avoided being apocalyptic, as Donrod was spared the relegation playoff thanks to a few points in the stretch run and a goal difference tie-breaker. They also lost Vandy Vaughn, one of the team's few young talents, and Quebecois defender Bustamante's immigration status is still an open question given the Waters rules (Yemelina, on the other hand, has been grandfathered in and is in the process of earning Bohrian citizenship). That being said, this squad looks, at least theoretically...pretty good? Quincy Sunday is one of the league's most interesting rookies, becoming the MVP of Bohr's second tier of college football after slipping through the recruitment cracks; he combines high-quality ball control and the ability to stop and cut on a dime with a real nasty streak, always being willing to get his elbows out and tackling like the other team owes him money. Both of the internationals are still very good, and the aging Chris Heinz moving back to CB instead of a more-exhausting holding midfielder role fits his current skillset much better. Even if the results haven't shown it, Donrod has made a significant amount of investment to get the team to midtable in recent years, and they hope this will be the year it pays off.

Frumston once again managed to avoid the guillotine of relegation despite being a favorite to go down in every season since its introduction, even finishing 11th and nearly doubling their point haul from the previous season. Since the departure of guys like keeper Evan Willis and Phillip Gonzales, they've mostly stuck with a similar core who are now mostly into their 30s, while picking up some free agents and outcasts here and there. In this case, that would be LaMerion Terry and Drake James; the former was a victim of the dreaded keeper sub at HP who never really recovered the top spot, while the latter was one of the better talents on an Incol River team that couldn't stay up. They both add real quality to the squad, but it's not nearly enough to pull them out of the double-digit doldrums.

Manager: Tsai Chih-Chou (age 59) - The longtime Weaver Union coach now takes on the hardest/most rewarding job in the country; although he's been criticized for his sub decisions and lack of mid-game adjustments, he's one of the most well-liked and best long-term managers in the league

Stop me if you've heard this one; Heavenly Princess started slow and dropped a bunch of points that they shouldn't have been dropping, realistically eliminating themselves from the title race before mid-season, before playing some of the best football ever seen in Bohr in the later weeks to backdoor a top-4 finish. It's a tragic end to Jaxon Girard's brief football management career at HP, as he fell on his sword and gave way to caretaker manager Daniel Scotash, who got such impressive results (despite not appearing to do much of anything at all) that there were rumors that he would be kept on as the manager proper. Ultimately, however, the powers that be wanted experience, and so they shelled out to get Tsai Chih-Chou, the great architect of Weaver Union. Like fellow Weaver icon Maya Chandler, Tsai comes to Becis with large expectations that almost feel impossible to fulfill-hopefully his approval rating will stay positive for longer than hers did. Meanwhile, another Becis immigrant returned home, as Eli Sheve left for Motan; while the enigmatic all-rounder never totally fit in with the Princesses, he will nevertheless be missed. The team itself is fairly similar to where it was last season; Turner (who got injured immediately before they went on their run) banging in goals, Fox and Schuyler proving expert service while occasionally getting in on the act themselves, and Kang Hyo-Seung being a physical and technical mismatch for any other player in the league. The defense is a bit shakier than it's been historically, but c'mon, surely this will be the year they put it all together.

Can you come home again? Motan's season 2 triumph-a bolt from the blue, a run that still looms large in the record books as the highest point total of all time-was led by Eli Sheve and Arnold Harrow. The former was the lightning rod, a player who could never really be defined by position as much as by the sheer amount of action he created in every phase, always keeping a smile on his face no matter the situation-and the latter was the cool, erudite shot-stopper, the back line that allowed the rest of the team to take greater and greater risks because they knew he'd be there to bail them out. Now, eight years and zero top-four finishes later, the two of them are reunited, older and wiser-and the team surrounding them might be just as good. Abraham Norberg is a picture-perfect mechanical player who seemingly never makes bad decisions; there are flashier midfielders with more goal contributions out there, but on a minute-to-minute level he might be the best in the country. His new double-pivot partner, AJ Hancock, is more boisterous but has lots of quality in his own right, with his tackling in particular being fawned over during his time at Northwest Provincial. It's a team with talent all over the field; could lightning strike twice for them?

Manager: Arturo Figueroa (age 51) - a man who bleeds Perets red, Figueroa got a medical degree before picking up coaching full-time; his training sessions are notably lower-intensity than much of his peers, which he calls intelligent load management and others call cowardice

Created in the 1960s as a direct rival to Perets FC (at the time a major, and rich, footballing power), Red Perets is now the only explicitly left-wing team in the BCF, although both the Weaver teams code as being at least vaguely liberal. They've picked up a few castoffs in the promotion process, but the core of the team is home-grown-literally, in the case of Nico Figueroa, who is both a very talented player with a gift for high-arcing bird-killing passes and the manager's kid. The level of the BCL compared to the top tier is often debated, especially recently after Incol River became the first team to immediately get sent back down after their promotion, but the squad is well-rounded with bits of quality. Players like Tom Bacha and Daniel Lewis have come from the second tier and immediately become some of the best players in the league-it wouldn't be that out there for a full team to do the same.

What has Shansco had that the rest of the league has lacked over the past three seasons? Princess and City get all the attention, they've repeatedly had to replace core pieces, they've watched the other great teams of the south struggle in the IFCF environment-and yet, they've only gotten better, winning their third title in their most impressive league season yet. Part of it is Aiden Wallace and the tactical style he's built. Despite "the wedge" being derided as being too compact and giving up too much space around the edges, it's hard to imagine the team without it; Lance Good, already on the wrong side of 30 when this run began, has turned into a hybrid DM-CB whose defensive positioning and communication are unmatched, and what initially seemed like limitations for Khalikov were actually a blessing in disguise, giving him all the options he needed to both score and assist. The other part of it is that they are, for lack of a better word, clutch. Kaleo Solomon is the poster boy for this; not flashy, not a brilliant passer, but an obscenely hard worker who gets better in the closing minutes where the other 21 players on the pitch slow down. The number of times he's come in from nowhere to get a winner is unbelievable. Athletic are going to have to work very hard for a fourth ring, but at this point, can you doubt them?

Stadium: One More Extra Stadium (capacity: 70,000) - it was the most state-of-the-art stadium in Bohr ten years ago; it's not like it's that much worse now, but a willingness to cut corners among OME management and the general mediocre crowds mean that some of the shine has worn off

Manager: Sherrod Simpson, age 52 - after a few years where he could sit back and let his talent do their thing (not that he would ever actually sit back, but he could), is really showing that he's still a genuinely very good coach

The history of St. Natasha Pyramid in the BCF is, really, the history of Jamie Sullivan; ever since they acquired the raw 21-year-old with a gift for headers, they've been championship contenders as long as they had just a couple other players they could surround him with. Last year was different, though-Sullivan was hurt and generally less effective than usual, and the wingers that would normally send him his crosses were unable to do so. It should have been a massive step back, and yet Pyramid got better, thanks to Simpson bearing down and getting the defense into perfect shape. Having Pete Warnor, the best left back in BCF's brief history, helps; despite his age, he might be in the best shape of his life and is certainly in his best form, a psychic man-marker who is still deceptively fast enough to close down opposing wingers. As far as new additions, HP cast-off Herringbone saw little play there, but was a cross machine at Jardin and could do the same here. Sullivan's second Pyramid contract, the largest wages in the league for a domestic player, expires after this season, and whether he renews might come down to his output, but even if he's past his prime it doesn't mean Pyramid has to be.

Manager: Daniel Scotash (age 47) - interim Heavenly Princess coach who didn't do enough to keep that job, but did manage to go to Wannick in maybe the single largest culture shock possible
Last Five Seasons: 10th, 12th, 8th, 7th, 7th

One top-half finish is a fluke; two is a trend, and even after the loss of Bowen to Colside (a move that makes him practically persona non grata in Weaver), Wannick is able to feel pretty decent about their whole system. Cressida Langley rewrote the BCF record book last year by becoming the youngest player, youngest starter, youngest goal-scorer, youngest assister, and, late in the season, youngest player to score a hat-trick; while not fully polished, her run of form has made top officials question if the college system is taking away from Bohrian football's potential. Marc Noren, another player with Tikariot roots, was naturally less flashy but played in Bowen's system well, able to step up and pass when the situation required it while also being able to cope with the high line that he used. In Scotash's more traditional 4-4-2, he'll have less to do, which could be a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it. The rest of the roster is decent, if somewhat incomplete; Paz hasn't been able to get back to the form he found during Wannick's 17-game unbeaten run a couple years ago, but he's still a serviceable winger, and Palaven is a steady hand who gets lost in the shuffle of Bohrian CMs a bit but is well-respected around the league. The goal is to hold on to 7th; making a run to the top 4 would be a dream, but it's hard to see it happening this season.

Manager: Artie Just (age 49) - Played the bad-cop role as Chih-Chou's assistant during most of his time at Weaver; now in his first head job, much more of a micromanager than his predecessor

The Tsai Chih-Chou era brought Union from a gritty, unwatchable midtable team to being one of the most interesting squads in Bohr, a perpetual underdog who managed to play with the big boys and compete for those all-important IFCF places. Now that era is over, and Chih-Chou's departure led to many of the players he personally recruited-Ye Yu-Liang, Jackie Ding, Jimmy Lorenz-leaving along with him. What's left is a team caught between those two identities. Chop Fulton, James Herbert, and Tikariot native Shawn Embury bring the grit and ball control in the midfield, but the back four lacks the athleticism to back them up; meanwhile, Sargent and Giusti can both score, but neither of them really wants to be the main guy, preferring to work around a Jackie Ding-esque striker instead. Giusti himself is practically caught between every possible offensive role; is he a no.9? A second striker? A winger? An attacking midfielder? Many of the same questions were asked about Grady Roces, who blossomed into an MVP and Golden Boot winner, but it took a transfer for that to happen. Weaver hopes the same won't have to hold for Giusti.

The table at the end of the first five weeks sees a familiar face at the top of the table; Shansco Athletic, going for their fourth straight championship, hangs six on Weaver to jump to first before splitting a pair of games against Becis's first and second teams (which is which is left as an exercise to the reader) to stay there. Outside of their losses to Shansco, City and especially Weaver have looked great, while Heavenly Princess have shown their frustrating inconsistency. Their match against Shansco showed both sides of the coin; Kang Hyo-Seung repeatedly bursted forward in the first half to carve apart Shansco's lack of protection on the wings and gain a 3-0 lead, after which they looked like the team who dropped points to Perets and Frumston and barely escaped with a 4-3 win. The surprise team in the top six is Becis Dynasty, who haven't faced a particularly difficult slate but have done well to stay undefeated. On the other end, Wannick is already beginning to regret their Scotash hiring, who appears completely out-of-place in attempting to apply the classical capital style to the worst team in the country to try that with. His relationship with Cressida Langley, most notably, started off on the wrong foot and hasn't gotten any better, as the striker is everything Scotash is unfamiliar with; young, female, foreign, and unconcerned with how the game is "supposed to be played". Zero points from five games is about as bad as it gets, and while the BCF's relegation system is very lenient, you have to start getting points at some point.

In the nine seasons of the BCF, four teams have taken 28/36 of the top four slots. Those four teams-Athletic, City, Princess, Pyramid-happen to make up the top four once again, and seem to have a preternatural ability to reach another level that everyone else can't. Princess's 1-0 win over Motan shows this well, Eli Sheve's first match against his former club and the richest team in the league against the one team outside those "big four" to have gotten a championship; Sheve makes his mark for 70 minutes and gets some decent looks but can't finish the job, and Robert McKay ends up heading home a rough-looking corner to take home an important win to stay in touch with Shansco. Shansco don't play any of the other big teams in this set of games, but Aiden Wallace has always been able to keep his team focused and prepared for even the less important games, and they hold on to a four-point lead at the top. The top of the goals scored leaderboard is a familiar face: Jamie Sullivan, two seasons removed from his last Golden Boot but now in his contract year, with eight goals in five games to bring Pyramid back into the championship hunt. Dynasty run cold after running hot, their fortunes being tied to Ray-Jay Turner as much as any team's fortunes are tied to any player, and Wannick get a couple wins to take them out of the relegation places and bring Akinis in. Sixteen games are left to play, but for the fourth consecutive season, Shansco Athletic are in control of their destiny. Can they do it again?

Princess win the first of the two Becis derbies to put a big damper on City's title hopes; this time, it's Leif Fox as the star, playing in the same position that Orlan Healy once did and looking just as composed and perfect as Healy in his prime. Tsai is appropriately modest, giving all due respect to his opponents. Maybe he gives too much respect to clubs like Donrod City, who take an early lead in Fielding when Quincy Sunday robs a lazy build-up pass and cuts inside to finish with his left; the rest of the game is characterized by a strange lack of urgency from Chou, who makes no subs until the 83rd minute and allows the game to slip away. The lead at the top goes to five points when Shansco draw in Motan, and then moves to seven a couple weeks later. Only two players-Good and Khalikov-remain as starters from Aiden Wallace's first championship, and yet him and Shansco have barely ever broken stride-they picked out Daniel Lewis a couple years ago, anonymous even by the standards of second-tier defenders, and now he's widely regarded as the best center back in the league. A revitalized Weaver Union squad sits at 4th ahead of Pyramid, playing beautiful offensive football with no single focal point. Giusti has gotten stronger, and isn't just a finesse player anymore. He uses every inch of his frame to force defenses to collapse around him, giving Sargent and Embury all the space they need.

And the lead that took fifteen weeks to build crumbles in five. Shansco take on Motan at home and are completely shut out; overloading the midfield the way Aiden Wallace does simply doesn't matter when Norberg and Hancock are the best tandem in the league at holding possession. What looks like a significantly better performance in St. Natasha gets wiped out when, a couple minutes after halftime, Jimmy Lorenz earns a red card and gives a penalty for yanking down Jamie Sullivan on a break, messing up Sullivan's shoulder in the process. Don Howard buries the penalty, then gets another goal for good measure against a ten-man Shansco to pick up the draw, but Lorenz's suspension and Sullivan being out for a month means that it's a game that both teams would have preferred not to play. The Princesses, on the other hand, are perfect, getting five wins from five to close the gap. They've been in the hunt for a decade, and at their best they're nothing short of dominant, but only having a single championship-the same as Motan-haunts them. With six games left, it's basically a two-and-a-half club race at the top, with Becis City still able to contend but needing both of the other squads to falter. City, Motan, Pyramid, and Weaver will fight for the other two IFCF spots, although the latter two seem to be fading. On the other side of the table, the two newly-promoted teams just haven't been able to get anything going, but there's a massive difference between being relegated outright and getting to play a BCL team.

The game the season is leading up to happens on MD23, Shansco vs. Princess in a match that practically decides the championship. Unfortunately for neutral fans, the first half goes similar to the first game-Kang Hyo-Seung simply being too good for Shansco's wings-and unlike that first match-up, when Princess get out to a 3-0 lead they keep it. It's simple from there; City and Motan settle into third and fourth and Pyramid and Weaver limp to fifth and sixth without really being able to put of a fight for the IFCF spots. By MD26, Annex are guaranteed relegation, becoming the league's first true yo-yo club; the only real intrigue is if Wannick can avoid the ignominious fate of going from 7th to 13th. Somehow, they do, Langley putting two past Colside and a Noren header finishing the job; instead, it'll be the other newly promoted club, Red Perets, in the playoff.
