Let Memories Live Forever

Hockey is a long missed sport here in the Kingdom of Eshialand. With only one signup since WCoH 46 (and nothing of memorable note since WCoH 44) there was a lot left on the table when it came to hockey in a nation that used to love this sport so much. It felt like hockey was left in the dust for the sports that the powers that be seemed to love more, like football, chess, and baseball. There was no love left to go around for hockey, and that just would not do for some. However, nobody seemed to be willing to break this endless trend of disappointment.

Until Alexander Maran got a call from a number he hadn't heard from in eleven years. "Hello? Jonas?"

Jonas Degle has had a long, long time to think since WJHC 17. All of that was such a distant memory, but yet ones that would never leave. It was where he met the love of his life, and where he went from a random kid who could skate well to a part of something so much more than himself. He yearned for the thrill of the ice once more, and he and his now-wife, fellow WJHC alum Penelope Raleigh, hatched a plan to bring back those good old days. "Hey Coach!"

"Please, Jonas, it's been so long since I was anything resembling your coach, come on now... just call me Alex."
"Alright then, Alex... I was just wondering if you wanted to do some sort of reunion for the old team. You know, get to see each other again, I know everyone would appreciate it..."
"Uh... sure I guess, did you have anything in mind?"
"I was thinking we could all head to South Newlandia to watch the Campionato Esportiva together! Get to cheer on the same team again, you know? The sort of stuff we've been missing..."
"Count me in. I suppose we'll meet at the airport?"
"Seaport, actually, we're riding in style. Next Friday at 6 am."
"Six in the morning???"
"Gotta get there early to beat the rush."
"Alright, fine. See ya then."

click!

Of course, the former team themselves would not be arriving at six, but rather much, much earlier... they arrived bright and early at 4 am, filling up the ship with all of their gear under cover of night. "Load them in quicker..." Amy Inden shouted, "He's going to get here soon!"

This group had to make absolutely sure that Alex Maran had zero idea this was happening. Heck, they never even told the proper sporting authorities to make this an official team; everything they were doing was under the table, as independent athletes representing Eshialand in name only, here for their love of the game and nothing else, since it was clear that the Eshian government didn't love hockey the same way they did. Their beloved game was a dying art form, and they were going to do the absolute best they could to keep it alive.

At the stroke of six, Alex arrived on the docks. "You chartered a private ship to get us all there?"
"Only the best of the best for an occasion such as this one..." Jonas replied. "Let's all get on the boat, breakfast is prepared!"

"Ahoy everyone..." the captain said over his loudspeaker, "now leaving Eshialand City for Newport, hopefully none of you get seasick!"

"Wait, Newport?" Alex asked, "I thought the CE team was playing in Elephant Valley..."

The ship hasn't even embarked on its journey and he was already seeing straight through their lie. "I knew I should've told him we were going to watch the chess team..." Jonas thought to himself, but it was too late now. He couldn't really bullshit his way out of this one so easily.

"Okay, so, um, you see... I know we told you this was just a reunion to like, hang out and stuff, but uh..."
"I don't like where this is going Jonas..."
"We're playing in the regional hockey tournament, we really just wanna lace 'em up again you know??"

"Jonas, if we ever get back to Eshialand, I am going to kill you."

football.
Injustice of the Highest Degree

"It should've been us" is a petty excuse of a cope. Everyone knows that, but yet somehow people still get away with saying it anyway given any opportunity to do so. And for fans of the Eshian national football team, "it should've been us" was heard across the nation upon the news that it would be Lozho, not them, going to the finals. Lozho? What the hell did they ever do to deserve that? It was like the Owls tripped over one another enough for them to collapse at one of the last possible moments. Everyone knew it should've been a Fhulghamous Peninsula-Eshialand final, so imagine the scenes when the Fhulghamous side couldn't even win a "freebie" against Lozho.

This would not be able to stand once again... and luckily, the Owls had proven that they more than had the capability to make this their year. They worked themselves up to becoming a Pot 1 squad in this CE. They had another amazing WCQ, and finally got their win in the World Cup Finals, with a knockout appearance to go with it. Everything seemed to be breaking their way, so it was time to put paid to any talks of curses or chokes in the Campionato. This was Eshialand's time to shine, and they were ready to prove this.

And better yet, there was a Lozho match on the group stage docket.

First, however, they had to worry about an ever-ascendant Katzeburg, fresh off their first World Cup qualification which saw them swipe points from such teams as Huayramarca and Farfadillis. Neither of those draws were anything to sneeze at, and they were signs that the Owls would have to give their 200% on this one. Yes, 200%. Limits are not a factor when a Campionato is at stake, after all. After that, then it would be Lozho, then Damukuni (who many Eshians insisted were due for a second golden age), Quebecois Acadiana, and lastly an absolute classic of a match in the 14 Stars, a rematch of both of these teams' respective first WCQ matchup, all the way back in 2021.

This would not be an easy group to qualify out of, nor was it meant to be. Given the bizarre method of dealing with "bye days", all of the other teams in this group would be playing much easier opponents than Lozho (although the 14 Stars playing a derby match against Sylestone would be an interesting watch no matter what). The Owls were going to be playing this whole thing from somewhat of a disadvantage, but on the bright side, they were in the best spot to avenge their injustices, and bring this thing home with true smiles on their faces.

baseball.
Ready to Rumble

Baseball. Is. Back.

These three words are something that unite the nation of Eshialand in ways that any other sport really can't. Even football doesn't quite bring the same draw as baseball does these days; perhaps it's just the infrequency and inconsistency of modern WBCs, but baseball is the sort of spectacle that literally everyone waits for every single time a tournament occurs... and now, it's happening on the regional stage! (Not that it matters much because the top 4 teams from the last WBC bar Drawkland are all in Esportiva, but still.)

And good(?) news! (For fans of Eshian baseball, anyway. Not so much for the team...) the Screwballs are starting out by playing South Newlandia! Oh, okay, maybe that's not such good news. Once again, bizarre methods of dealing with bye days mean that Eshialand are the only team in Group B "fortunate" enough to play South Newlandia, and they have to do it right at the start of the campaign. No pressure though, after all, if they could beat Super-Llamaland in the 3PPO of the last WBC, surely they could beat the best team in the world without warming up at all, right?

Obviously, such news sent the team into a slight bit of panic mode. They hadn't had much time to prepare, what with Eshian domestic baseball being completely in the toilet in the LPB era and this team only being reassembled mere weeks before the surprise of a Sporting Festival was announced. (It wasn't a surprise for the Eshian sporting authorities, of course, but since when have they ever remembered to tell their teams what the hell is going on?)

The rest of this group could be worse, with Tumbra, Irithoren, Osterhalten, and Ethane... they had dodged the real threat that was TJUN-ia, and, while any team with the name Tumbra slapped on it instantly gained an extra scary factor, they weren't really a baseball nation and this team might not be so prepared to jump into things. This might not be so bad. First, they just had to deal with the Ellies. At home. Totally not a problem, right?

chess.
Dark(-squared) Ages

Something was amiss in the state of Eshian chess.

Between ECC X having the sort of ending nobody in the nation wanted, and the Multiversal Chess Tour being a very "fall flat on yer faces" experience, this team was not having a good run of it in the past year. In fact, you might be able to say things were going quite badly for Eshialand. "A second dark age" doubters decried, comparing this recent run with the years between ECCs IV and VI which saw Eshialand practically non-existent on the chess stage. It was not a good time to be a chess player in Eshialand, one could say.

Worry not, however, as the Ivory Crown Hotel has proved itself year after year to be a place where Eshian teams could truly shine. No matter what the situation, a trip back to Newport meant an Eshian run to... okay, not to the championship, they still had yet to win an ECC after all, but very close to the championship.

The rebuild would start against Kanzlia, who didn't look like major threats, but in a group like this you couldn't take a single point for granted. This group was stacked as all heck, with defending ECC champs Katzeburg and absolute SN3C sweepers Vielfaltig both being in here and ready to take the top two spots. All of a sudden, this team that looked like a top 2 team in the world for a while had, in just a couple short years, found themselves third in their group in a regional. They were going to be doing something they didn't have much recent experience with: playing from behind.

Every point counted, and they couldn't give an inch. It was top 3 or bust, and they couldn't afford giving up anything.
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

Style of Play
Style Modifier: -1.22
Description: Unlike his stint as Hispinas manager, Alfonzo Medrano did not advise SFI's national football teams to play an attacking mindset, instead, he prescribed a balanced style of play in a 4-2-1-3 formation that would easily transition to defensive or attacking set plays on the fly. Funelas took this advice to mind, hence the current identity of the national team. Frain also prefers a rigid style of play prioritizing defense over offense.

Official Kits
Libertad Sportswear supplies all national teams' kits with a 15-year contract. The national team will don its new kits for the 97th edition of the World Cup Qualifiers starting with a few pre-qualifying friendlies and a competition with Hispinas for the Trofeo del Cielo y el Mar, a competition to commemorate the friendship between the two nations which started during the Sangtian-Filindo War.

Primary Kit - Yellow shirts with red collar, and trim, yellow shorts with red trim, yellow socks

HEADLINES: SOCIAL DEMOCRATS OUST ENTIRE EXECUTIVE, NEW LEADER STEINBACH PROMISES "UNAPOLOGETIC LEFT-WING POLITICS"

STRATON: Not much was ever expected out of the happenings of the 140th National Congress of the Social Democratic Party, but the happenings of the weeklong party convention led to a surprising upheaval of the party's central leadership as incumbents were swept out, replaced with a new, "unapologetically socialist" cache of young leaders. The beleaugered, left-wing party, which for years now has suffered from an identity crisis over whether it should pursue socially liberal policies or more socially conservative ones, has been led by Justin Spearing since 2025 — but the 70 year-old looked visibly shaken as he was first challenged, and then defeated decisively, by his challenger Janice Steinbach.

Steinbach, 45, is part of a new generation of left-wing activists who were supposedly "fed up" with the socially conservative direction that Spearing's leadership had taken the party over the past decade and a half. Internal sources say that Steinbach was the unofficial leader of a large-scale entryist movement into the party, which "slowly but surely" wrested control of local party branches without the party brass realising. The 140th National Congress was "always planned" to be the culmination of the group's efforts, with the entirety of the party's Central Executive Committee replaced with members aligned with Steinbach and the so-called 'New Socialist' faction of the party.

"We are the future," said Steinbach in a fiery speech after being elected, to the cheers of delegates in the crowd. "We stand not for the middling centre-left politics of the Labour Party, or the environmental review progressivism of the Alliance, but for unapologetic socialism — and socialism that does not discriminate on who you are, where you were born, but only if you are willing to tread on this path with us." The speech was a direct repudiation of Spearing's style of trading more socially conservative issues, having previously decried the "woke agenda" as a distraction from the SDP's main goal of class justice. The party's wavering support over issues like trans issues were a key reason why Cressida Granger — who, nearly two decades ago, was regarded as a rising star within the SDP, defected to the environmentalist, slightly more moderate but definitively socially liberal Alliance and later became their leader. "There is no economic justice without social justice. For Tumbra to be more equal, to wrest Tumbra out of the hands of billionaires and the elite [...] we must include everyone," was another highlight from Steinbach's speech to close out the conference.

The Social Democrats have long faced the problem that their style of militant socialism has never really been popular with the Tumbran public in general, yet attempts to moderate it have never seemed to work. In their early history, where they went head to head with the more moderate Labour Party over support from trade unions, Labour won decisively — and the Social Democrats' popularity went with it. Though they have maintained a steady support level of about one to two percent of the Tumbran voting population, previous party leaders have seemed content to hold on to their support, rarely pushing beyond the three seats they hold in the House of Representatives. Currently, all three of the seats they hold on the federal level are in the more socially-conservative, working-class mining towns in the state of Clearmont; while they previously also held seats in urban areas like Straton, Spearing's tenure as leader alienated those members of the party.

Steinbach's hope, as expressed in her conference speeches, is to reverse this trend and present a "new, bold programme" to the voters of Tumbra. The report of the Central Executive Committee on the proceedings of the National Congress, which is expected in about three months after the conference, is said to be focused on chasing new demographics of Tumbrans who might be displeased with the current state of the Tumbran political system. The party is also expected to aggresively campaign for the 2044 Senate and state-level elections, while forgoing filing a candidate for the presidential election; something that Steinbach has previously said is a "move of extravagance that only serves to be a token presence while allowing us to feel good about ourselves."

But probably the biggest challenge she will face is the lack of name recognition she will have in the lead-up to those elections; having never held elected office, only 4% of voters had heard of Steinbach in a national-level survey conducted by CampbellStewart midway through the National Congress. But that could also be her saving grace, political analysts say; Steinbach, who is tattooed and is also the first openly LGBT leader of a national party — she has been married to her wife for nearly twenty years — could very well project a new image of a political leader who does not necessarily fit the mold.

"And if voters are scared by that," says Professor PK Jeyaretnam of the University of Couno, "they're either not part of the target demographic that the SDP seems to be chasing with this sudden shake-up of preferences, or they can look at the rest of the Central Executive Committee, particularly the party's new deputy leaders." Elected alongside Steinbach as the party's deputy leaders were Jacob Ackerman, 68, and Natalie van Haaren, 38; while both are members of Steinbach's 'New Socialist' faction, Ackerman in particular is said to be a major moderating influence on Steinbach, even as he entirely endorses the new platform of the Social Democratic Party. "The SDP will definitely remain committed to the democratic, multiparty system that has worked for the country for nearly two hundred years," said Ackerman at a plenary speech. "What we are looking at and will focus on is new ways of thinking, new possibilities for the human experience, new socialist means of approaching the governance of the country."

NPU (NORTH POLISH UNION) HOCKEY ROSTER

NPU sends their "B"-team to the Sporting Festival, as those players that are locks for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey have largely stayed home to practice for that. Young stars and fringe national team players comprise this roster, hoping to perform well and get a nod from the national staff. Good performances here will be noticed and depending on scheduling, the stars here may be selected to the WCoH roster. They will play fast and they will play aggressively. Hockey is primarily popular in the eastern fringe of the country, the regions of Lithuania having a primarily Slavic-speaking population, but is played nationwide.

NPU CHESS ROSTER

Chess is the most popular board game nationally and NPU has a strong contingent attending the Sporting Festival, headlined by Klaus Moeller, who sports a domestic rating above 2600. Moeller recently competed in South Newlandia's Classical Chess Cup, and although he opted out of the ongoing Grand Casaran of Chess citing a lack of desire to play such a long and gruelling schedule in a Swiss-style format, that decision has made him available for the team chess competition here. He is joined by a trio of compatriots all sporting ratings above 2500, among the strongest chess players in the country.

Board 1: Klaus Moeller
Board 2: Siarhiej Hryc
Board 3: Franciszek Gorski
Board 4: Władysław Kowalski

Dramatic Victory for Kaumann in Campionato Esportiva 40 Opener
Newport, South Newlandia - The EsportivArena in Newport was a scene of roaring celebration as Kaumann's national football team secured a dramatic victory in their opening Group B match of the Campionato Esportiva 40. Supri Nishikido and Genggong Effendi emerged as the heroes, netting crucial goals in a hard-fought contest.

Nishikido's decisive header in the 54th minute leveled the score after Zalivinian player Kamil Kotarski had given his side an early lead in the 22nd minute. Effendi then sealed the victory with a coolly taken penalty in the 85th minute, securing a vital three points for Kaumann in Group B.

"This victory is for all the enthusiastic Kaumann citizens back home," Nishikido expressed in a post-match interview with South Newlandia media.

Budi Secures Promising 11th Position in Karting Qualification
Elephant Valley, South Newlandia - Budi Vettel, Kaumann's karting sensation, delivered a commendable performance in the qualifying session at South Newlandia's renowned karting circuit, Elephant Karting Track, securing 11th position on the starting grid. Overcoming earlier engine troubles during practice, Vettel and the Kaumann karting team showcased their resilience and technical prowess.

"It was quite challenging," Budi Vettel remarked in an interview with South Newlandia media. "The track's challenges are reminiscent of those in my home country. We need to fine-tune the engine for optimal performance in the race."

Boom Boom Boom Boom! Four Goals for Kamijiro in CE40 Opener!

The Lightning got off to a flying start in New Colk as they blasted four past Sagotra! Sōji Kokubun opened up his account first, scoring a glancing header in the 17th to get the Kamijiroans ahead. Next up was a penalty scored by Katsu Fujiwara, then a goal from Kento Kanazono right before half. An error from Kenichi Asumi allowed a Sagotra goal right after the second half kickoff, but the three-goal lead was restored by substitute midfielder Nicácio Xavier via a direct free-kick. Sagotra did score one more in garbage time, but it didn't matter. A 4-2 final took the Lightning top of Group A.

The interesting off-pitch story was the amount of Kamijiroan ex-pats that showed. During the civil war, there were a lot of people with the means to do so that fled the country to safer shores, including South Newlandia itself. They were initially given some side eyes by travelling Kamijiroans who hadn't been able to flee. By the end of the match, they were too busy celebrating a four-goal banger to really care about all that. Down on the bench, Kai Itakura and Sōji (after being subbed off for Darren Williams) were looking up to the crowd and seeing if they recognized anybody.

"Hey, isn't that Emperor Kaminari?" Sōji pointed up at a sunglasses-and-hoodie wearing 20-something.
Kai looked where Sōji was pointing. "I can see the resemblance. But there's no way he'd show, right? He's still got a huge bounty on his head."
"I thought he was confirmed dead."
"No, never confirmed, just assumed. He vanished on Jirō Island, remember?"
"Yeah, I remember. He and his aide took their helicopter over and then the flight logs showed the helicopter going down somewhere near Spolia. But they never found the helicopter or their bodies."
"Dude, I think that's him." Kai said, wide-eyed. "Look at the hair! It's got those blonde streaks."
Sōji sat in disbelief for a moment, until the man said something to the girl next to him and took his hood off, revealing jet-black hair. "Nah, can't be."
"Man, I really thought."
"Me, too."

From the other perspective, 'Ichirō' and 'Tomoko' tense up as they notice two of the players pointing towards them.
"Shit." Ichirō said, nudging Tomoko.
"What?"
"They're pointing at us. Are we caught?"
"No. There's no way they could know. We changed our names, our appearances, our... everything. There's no way."
"Is it the hair?"
"No, Ka- Ichirō. Stop freaking out."
"I'm gonna take off my jacket. Maybe if they see my hair is black they won't suspect anything."
Ichirō takes his hoodie off and his jet-black slick-back is freed. The players suddenly look disinterested.
"I told you!" Ichirō whispered. "They were totally looking."

Until next time...

The Unprofessional Professional League

Friday, 27 December 2024

Labuan Fatah - President of PSKS, Sagotran football association is filling a complaint to MFF, Manggala Football Federation following their entry document to the IFCF for the international competition. He argue that the entry document have been violated the agreement made by the 3 associations and MFF before the start of the 2024 season. The agreement have specifically detailed on how the qualification to the IFCF and any regional competitions are given to the associations involved. In the agreement, it has been agreed that IFCF slots are given to both Girinatha and Sagotra as both associations have the largest number of clubs within the league and also the largest contributor. While Sao Dominggo only able to qualify to regional competition, in this case CMFA Champions League. That too, they have to established the playoff competition so there are some spice to the qualification process as the association only have 4 clubs in Manggala Super League. But the entry document clearly stated that they enter IFCF as a single entity under the banner of Rajamanggala.
"I don't know where they got the idea to singlehandedly altered the rule that we have agreed upon. This is something unprofessional to the so called professional league. I understand that this entry is irreversible, but we hope they learn from their mistakes and not doing the same mistakes again in the upcoming season. They need to abide to the agreement.

Rizal Nazarian
President of PSKS

Until this article is publish, no answer was coming from the MFF officials. While the football fans in Sagotra filled the comment column of MFF's IFCF entry post in their social media platform. It was full of negative comments. Comments came from FFSD, Sao Dominggo's football federation. Their spokesperson stated that they never expected MFF will do such things. They said that MFF give the honor after AS Kaili Colmera win the league and it was purely spontaneous. The spokesperson hope that the complaint from PSKS is not used to cornered both the club and FFSD. Although it seems that everything have gone viral. And all are pointing to MFF as the decision maker in this situation.

ULA launches campaign in Struppen, seat sharing agreement announced

BOGEN, KAUNUS: The United Left Alliance wasted no time in getting their campaign on the road. Immediately following the announcement of election dates in September by the Election Commission, the top brass of the ULA were seen plotting a strategy to wrestle away control of the economically most prosperous state from the KVP. With only a month and a half to go to polls in Kaunus, the parties needed to be quick if they were to change their fate. The ULA was well aware of the importance of swiftness and unity in what they were hoping to achieve. The formation of the ULA was a historic event in the history of Vielfaltig as it was the first time that a broad left alliance was formed to fight the growing influence of the right. This unity could not be compromised in what is the first electoral test for the ULA. They were aware of this as a meeting was held last week at the CPV Headquarters in Bogen amongst top leadership of the ULA including Louis Britiny (leader of the SWP), Luvicus Nylund (leader of the SOC), Lavina Alesio (CPV representative and Foreign Minister) among others. This meeting was expected to clarify numerous aspects of the ULA's election campaign in the upcoming months, most notably the seat distribution and candidature for Chief Minister. These decisions came rather swiftly as the priorities of the leadership were firmly set on a strong display in the polls which could be hampered by infighting. The three representatives of the respective Parties of the Alliance, Nyulund, Britiny and Alesio, addressed the media following the meeting. The seat-sharing agreement was the topic of interest as the splitting of the 356 seats could very well define the outcome of the race. The Socialist Front (SOC) were given the biggest share competing in 132 seats followed by the CPV getting 120 seats and the Workers Party (SWP) receiving 98 seats. The remaining 6 seats were granted to independents allied with the ULA particularly defectors from the Justice Party. There were notable concessions made especially on behalf of the CPV who had never before competed in an alliance and thus had to give up numerous seats. Alesio speaking on this in the press conference stated that the CPV was stronger for their alliance with like-minded political parties and such concessions only made their unity stronger. The Chief Ministerial candidate however was not announced as the three said the ULA would kick off their campaign in Struppen, a city in the industrial heartland of Kaunus.

The interest in the Struppen demonstration was peaking especially what it would reveal about the ULA's policy platform for the upcoming polls. The KVP were successful incumbents having expanded the industrial base of the state along with beginning the transition to greener standards of agriculture and industry. The working class of Kaunus still had their grievances especially due to a widening in economic disparity following considerable liberalisation of the Vielfaltigian economy. The biggest impact of it has been on the industrial base of Kaunus creating a politically divisive environment with many embracing liberal policies which has uplifted the middle class while affecting the workers considerably. The ULA kicking off their campaign in Struppen which is the industrial heartland and the main region where worker agitation has been strongest could point to it having to do something with their overall policy platform. The demonstration was well received with large crowds of workers assembled to witness the ULA leadership present their policies. There was a strong focus on the economic policy primarily especially concerning the strengthening workers of the region. To said purpose, the ULA proposed strengthening worker cooperatives and increasing mandatory workers ownership to 50%. This economic platform was well received by the workers of Struppen and likely across Kaunus. The most important development at the demonstration was the announcement of Chief Ministerial candidate, Ludovic Wehner who is a member of the SOC placing the SOC at the forefront of the Kaunus campaign. Wehner is a present MLA from the Gorsbach constituency within the Struppen district. He grew up as a part of a working-class family studying History at University before entering politics as a young 25-year-old. He was one of the youngest MLAs as he was elected into office at 27 years old. He led the SOC to 45 seats in 1998 outperforming the CPV who only managed 43. This was a considerable political performance by Wehner and the ULA has again placed their trust in him to lead them in this pivotal election. The country waits in bated breath as this election season could very well mark a major shift in the political future of Kaunus and the country overall.

OSTERHALTIENNE UNIFICATION

Image

The idea of Osterhalten came to be in the late middle 19th century. The premise went against the grain of the nationalist fervor sweeping across the continent in the 1800s: three, culturally distinct monarchies unite under one, unified republic. Osterhalten was proposed to be made up of three kingdoms: the Kingdom of Vichelin, led by the Isomberg dynasty, the Kingdom of Windsor, led by the Wayland dynasty, and the Kingdom of Richelieu, led by the Sabourin dynasty. Ideas like that would be laughed at in the vast majority of circumstances: why would three leaders of reasonably powerful kingdoms voluntarily give up their power and wealth to unite with culturally dissimilar nations? Proponents of unification had a few key things going for them: the economic weakness of each nation, growing militarism of other Iovan nations, and three allied leaders whose personal interests aligned with those of their people.

The morality of the recent leaders of the three kingdoms had unfortunately been what led to the weakness of them all. Some Iovan nations had begun imperializing less technologically advanced nations in the western continents, while the monarchs of Vichelin, Windsor and Richelieu refrained, citing the clear moral reasons against imperialism and colonialism. While this was the righteous thing to do, it did cause the three nations to fall behind economically, especially compared to Alonavia and Catria to the south. The imperial nations never colonized completely or even very widely into southern continents, yet they held colonies at least equivalent in size to their mother countries, and populated them with hundreds of thousands of citizens to run the colonizing efforts. Vast quantities of raw materials were shipped back to the mother countries and sold back to the colonies and other nations, beginning the first mercantilist systems in history. Without vast amounts of exotic goods and raw materials to sell, Vichelin, Windsor and Richelieu struggled to compete with other Iovan nations. While still developed well compared to nations worldwide, the three kingdoms on their own were clearly weaker than their Iovan counterparts economically, with lower average GDP per capita and wages. Some right-wing factions within the nations advocated for colonialism, but the powerful left-wing factions in parliaments as well as monarchs were staunchly opposed to subjugation.

With newfound funds from mercantilism and the production methods of industrialization of earlier in the century, imperialist Iovan nations began ramping up their military strength to further their goals of empire both on Iova and across the seas in their colonies. Alonavia and Catria had over tripled their military capacity in 20 years, and new advancements in weaponry had left their neighbors in the dust. Richelieu was most directly under threat of invasion, given their long border with Catria and rocky relationships due to political differences between the conservative absolute monarchy in Catria and progressive constitutional monarchy in Richelieu. While the three nations could rely on each other as allies for support, the military efforts were still disjointed and no match for the Alonavians and Catrians combined. Additionally, to the south, Vichelin was threatened by the imperialist Ardencade who had rocky relationships with Vichelin for centuries. Proponents of unification saw one, strengthened and united military as a strong reason for a singular state.

The leadership of the three kingdoms had been extraordinarily progressive for at least a century each. The three nations and Osterhalten itself have curious relationships with their royal families, as even though class society has been abolished and the means of production forbidden from being owned privately, the royal families have been allowed to continue to exist (albeit completely powerless and rarely mentioned politically). Their continued existence is likely because of their leftist actions and support for socialism in their territories, and as a result being left alone because of the contribution to the movement, even though their existence is antithetical to socialist principles. This relationship between the people and the royals has been the subject of intense study, socially and within academia. Parliaments had been established since the 1700s of the royals’ own volition in Vichelin and Richelieu, and with a bit of prodding from the citizens in Windsor. Additionally, each of the three nations had rejected unfettered capitalism at the onslaught of the industrial revolution, with especially Vichelin adopting early forms of socialism virtually as soon as the theory had been invented. Additionally, the three kingdoms had been allied with each other for many decades, and considered themselves a brotherhood. Not to mention, the three current monarchs had grown up together and attended the same schools and now were tight friends. At the time of unification talks, King Amadeus IV, William III and Queen Magdeleine II were at the head of their nations and all aged within a year of each other at 36. Adding to their good relationships, the unmarried Queen Magdeleine II and King Amadeus IV were rumored to be romantically linked, which was proven true with their marriage in 1890. The extremely positive relationship between the three nations was likely the largest factor in unification, and as long as one culture or kingdom wasn’t allowed dominance over the others, harmony would be likely in the unified nation.

Hundreds of politicians and influential statespeople were in attendance at the Unification Conference in June of 1889, held jointly at the House of Parliament and Salzbach Palace in Hauberg. Though so many attended, the conference was limited to nine participants in order to simplify the talks while allowing numerous viewpoints from each nation. The unification talks were called by the hugely popular Prime Minister of Vichelin, Frederick Burton, and subsequently led by the three monarchs, the Prime Minister of each nation, as well as one elected delegate from each nation. From Vichelin, respected Sozialistische Partei Speaker Tobias Seider was elected to join unification talks, an elderly member from the more centrist wing of the big-tent centre-left to left-wing party. Windsor sent young stateswoman Mary Brent of the Centre Party along with Prime Minister Charles Wickenheiser of the Social Democratic Party. Finally, Richelieu sent Socialist Party Prime Minister Louis-Marie Martin and Chair of the Socialist Party Corinne Blanchard to join the conference. The event was highly publicized, though the unification was mostly popular within the populace of the nations: 83% of Vicheliners, 69% of Windsorites and 78% of Richelieans were in favor of the unification. This approval did not stop protests: nationalist factions in each nation staged protests, with some reaching 10,000 in number and often resulting in violent clashes with counter-protestors and national guards. On June 21, 1889 nationalists participating in the Dreamcliff Riot set fire to the grounds and interior of the Windsor Parliament building and looted nearby stores. The fire was contained by the Dreamcliff Fire Brigade, but not until it destroyed half of the building and ruined many valued paintings and historical works. 3 died and 235 were arrested in relation to the riot, and security during the conference was across the three nations to prevent more riots from escalating.

The delegation from Windsor was the most difficult to please: understandably so, since the lowest percentage of Windsorites supported unification, though Windsor was also the weakest and least populated of the three kingdoms. Ultimately, delegates from Richelieu and Vichelin relented, allowing the Windsorites to place the capital of Osterhalten in Dreamcliff, conduct federal-level politics in primarily English, list English first on government documents, and allow the royals to retain two palaces to reside in, rather than the one palace each allotted to the Sabourin and Isomberg families. The other delegations saw these measures as inconsequential compared to the benefits of unification, and apart from the capital remaining in Dreamcliff and most federal level politics taking place in English, the Windsor advantages have fallen to the wayside over the years. The Richelian franc was selected as the currency of the nation, and the electoral system of Vichelin was selected to apply to the new nation.

The simplified, key conditions of final agreement are as follows:

- The Kingdoms of Vichelin, Windsor, and Richelieu will unite under one nation, Osterhalten. There will be no distinctions between the former territories of any nation, and no special privileges will be allotted to citizens of any former nation.

- The Sabourin and Isomberg royal families are stripped of all power they have, yet allowed to keep and maintain one palace and the surrounding grounds. The Windsor royal family is stripped of all power they have, yet allowed to keep and maintain two palaces and their surrounding grounds.

- A unicameral, mixed-member proportional system parliament with 515 members will be established as the governing body of Osterhalten. A President and Vice President will be elected by the people every 4 years, with a hard two-term limit.

- The private ownership of the means of production is outlawed, and any private industries remaining within the three nations will be taken over by the Osterhaltienne government.

- The Osterhaltienne Constitution will clearly outline these freedoms granted to its citizens in perpetuity: to speak, to assemble, to practice religion, to a free press, to associate, to vote, and from discrimination based on gender or race. The constitution may be changed with a 2/3 vote in the House of Representatives.

Hapilopper 0-1 Limey George

Morrison 59' pen.

Man of the Match: Solomon HALE (LMG)

LMG: Hale; Christiansen (Thatcher 71), Greene (Coleman 71); Shipwright (Poynter 45),
Morrison (c), Mortensen; Ekdal, Madsen (Mathias 56), Ottesen (Andreas 56), Taylor, Willis

Bookings: Shipwright 30, Madsen 47, Greene 62, Christiansen 67

Limey George manager Abel Martí will be relieved after the Bats miraculously managed to steal a win against a formidable Hapilopper side last night. The balance of play was firmly against the Limey side for the majority of the match, and Solomon Hale was fantastic value for his man of the match award, making a string of crucial saves to keep his side in the tie.

The match winning goal ultimately came during a frantic three minute spell, in which the Bats enjoyed some measure of joy in the attacking third, their attacking players combining well to force two corners before the decisive penalty. Remarkably, the Bats could have gone ahead before then, when an unfortunate communication mix-up between goalkeeper and defender led to a penalty being awarded for a handball. Abel Martí was seen on broadcast footage raising an eyebrow, and shrugging, before Erick Morrison stepped up and passed the ball tamely to the goalkeeper. The camera cut back to Martí nodding appreciatively and applauding his captain.

Post-game, both Morrison and Martí were asked about the bizarre incident, with Morrison explaining "I don't think the fella realised the kick had been taken, and he's picked it up to place it in the six-yard box to take it himself. Ref sees him pick it up and blows the whistle, but it's not in the spirit of the game is it? Can't be scorin' a goal from that, like. 'S'not proper."

Martí echoed the captain's sentiments, noting "the lads were rewarded for their sportsmanship" when they were awarded a second penalty a few minutes later, after an unintentional handball blocked Andreas Baek's header on the goal line. "Unlucky on the fella who blocked the shot," Morrison added. "But it were really handball that time."

Despite not being a defensively solid side, the Bats were able to defend their lead amidst an onslaught of attacking from Hapilopper, with Martí replacing both fullbacks late in the game to avoid a costly red card after both had picked up bookings for robust challenges. The high line of defence came in handy, compressing space and allowing Hale to advance far off his line to clear danger on multiple occasions, as well as giving the assistant referee's flag arm a good workout, but ultimately it was the combative approach taken by the attacking Limey players to press their opposition back at every juncture with direct passing into dangerous areas.

Next up for the Bats is Xanneria, one of the two remaining opponents in the group stage ranked higher than Limey George. Abel Martí expects another difficult encounter, comparing the unusual nature of the Maroons squad to playing against the various abyssal creatures, monsters, and shades that make up the Kage no Ryouiki team. "You know when we go to Necrophades," Martí said, referring to the biannual Necrophades Invitational tournament held in the Shadow Realm. "We must face demons and monsters and other strange creatures. But the lads do not complain. Xanneria will present a similar challenge. The unfamiliar, he scares you because you don't know him. A lesser man would question why these people are permitted to compete with their surgical enhancements and spring shoes and these things. But Abel Martí is not a lesser man. The Bats are not lesser men. If the difficulty is against us, it does not make a difference. We will fight them regardless."

The below is a transcript from a special edition of long-running KBC program SportsHub, focusing on the current Esportivan Sporting Festival in South Newlandia.

HUFFMAN: Good evening and welcome to a special edition of SportsHub. I’m Otis Huffman and tonight, we’ll be talking all things Esportivan Sporting Festival. The fourth edition of this region-wide event is being held just a short trip over in South Newlandia, and it’s been a mixed bag for our Katzeburgian sides in the competition.

Joining me tonight to discuss the results of the first matchday is head coach of KNL side Katzestadt AFC, Jim Krantz, and following the side’s elimination from the 50th edition of the World Bowl, head coach of the Katzeburg Wildcats Cameron Sydney. Thanks both for your time.

KRANTZ: You’re welcome and thanks for having me.

SYDNEY: Pleasure to be here, Otis.

HUFFMAN: Let’s jump right into it shall we? Arguably the big headline is the Blue Cats of Katzeburg labouring to a first day draw with Eshialand in the Campionato Esportiva. Lloyd Field striking to put the side ahead in the 48th minute with a brilliant twist and shot from the edge of the box, only for Eshialand to level the scores ten minutes from time through Bradley Davis.

It was an uncharacteristically flat showing from Katzeburg, with the side registering just four shots on target across the 90 - Jim, what are your thoughts on the side’s showing?

KRANTZ: It was a solid performance in my book. We have to consider that Eshialand are by far one of the favourites to go quite deep in the competition and it would have been a big ask to expect anything less than avoiding a defeat. I think Becka has got a good showing out of the side, especially with her choice to bring on some of the younger, more untested players to give them a run in the side.

HUFFMAN: By that you mean Kester Fuchs, who came on for his national team debut?

KRANTZ: Exactly. Eshialand are a quality side, and they showed it across the full 90 and had things swung a little more their way at times, we’d be looking down a heavy defeat. A draw is a solid start, but we need to be a little tighter in some areas, particularly up front if we want to be advancing.

HUFFMAN: Cameron, your thoughts about the side’s first game?

SYDNEY: Well, I fairly don’t know much about what we over in Aberstadt like to call soccer, but from the clips I’ve seen we weren’t as aggressive as we were over in the World Cup. We need that little bit of intensity which seemed to be lacking, especially once we went that goal up. Credit to my friend sitting across from me, but I’m not sure bringing someone like Fuchs on was the right move in retrospect, as once Drake Wruck came off the side seemed to stutter offensively.

HUFFMAN: Interesting. Jim, do you think that taking Wruck off slowed the side’s attacking options?

KRANTZ: Not at all. I think now is the perfect time to be bringing in new blood into the national setup, and Kester is a bright talent who has a lot to show, especially after his performances over in Axmund this season. Wruck is a hero, there’s no doubt about that, but we needed the injection of energy that someone like Fuchs provides - and I think Becka made the right call there as you could see Kester linking up really nicely a bit further down the field, allowing Lloyd to roam up top and create that additional pressure.

HUFFMAN: But the fact the side has blown the lead will no doubt be frustrating.

KRANTZ: Absolutely. It’s not an ideal result, especially after going a goal up, but a draw is better than nothing - I love to instill into my team that progress isn’t made in huge leaps and bounds, it’s the little wins. A point against Eshialand is a little win and a step in the right direction for our side. We just need to back it up now with more results!

HUFFMAN: Thanks for that. Let’s move onto the Espo T20 V, which saw Katzeburg struggle to get off the mark against Vielfaltig. The side lost by 75 runs in their debut which was mostly put down by captain Wally Crouch as difficulty to score runs off the Vielfaltig bowling lineup. Cameron, how did you think the side fared in their regional debut?

SYDNEY: It was a big ask against a side like Vielfaltig, who also did a number over us in the last World Cup if I remember rightly - the lack of runs has to be the real worry, especially given the side saw out their full allotment of overs. A run rate of 6.65 is nowhere near good enough for the format, and we were rightly punished for it.

HUFFMAN: Indeed. Steph Adcock was the brightest of the bunch for Katzeburg, with a knock of 34 off 31, but noone else cracked the 25 mark. Jim - Where does Katzeburg go from here?

KRANTZ: It’s clear it’s not an ideal start, but the side needs to pick themselves up and just try again. Vielfaltig are one of the tougher games on the docket, so a loss was always on the cards. Esportivan Darmen are unranked and a fresh team, albeit one coming off a bye, so the side needs to rebound quickly and display why they deserve to be in the mix come the end of the group.

HUFFMAN: Absolutely. Moving on, let’s talk about one of the brighter spots of the Katzeburgian performances in the sporting festival, that of Karting. We’ve seen the qualification take place over at the Elephant Karting Track and our own Arturo Mullenhaus finished just slightly off the top spot, down just .007 behind leader Evangelos Kalyftakis from Fhulgamous Peninsula. It’s a brilliant performance from the young racer, who was only just a split-second away from taking a Katzeburgian licence in the WGPC qualifier earlier this year, but a drive like that has to put him in the good books for some of the watching teams, right Jim?

KRANTZ: It was a very impressive performance, there’s no doubt about that. There are some great potential talents out there on the track, from some well established racing nations like Aji No Moto and Tumbra, so for Arturo to go out there and grab second place, even though it’s just qualifying at this stage - is no small achievement. Given how close he came to nabbing a licence for the WGPC this season, he could quickly be finding himself drawing eyes from teams which may be looking for that next raw talent out of Katzeburg.

HUFFMAN: Can he follow it up in the first race at Elephant Valley, do you think?

KRANTZ: Definitely. He’s got the drive, and will no doubt be wanting to impress, and the confidence has to be there after that good showing in qualifying. Can he win? It’s up in the air - again, there’s some quality drivers on that grid, but as long as he’s at the front of the pack, you can never rule it out.

HUFFMAN: Here’s hoping! Coach Sydney, I’d love to turn to you next as we quickly look at the Ice Hockey and Baseball results - a pair of defeats for the Katzeburg sides, but some spirited fights for brand new national teams.

SYDNEY: Most definitely. Going up against South Newlandia in the Ice Hockey was always going to be an uphill battle - the team is one of the top sides in the group - so to come out narrowly going down 3-2 is a solid effort for the side. I was particularly impressed by Adell Munro on the right wing as our first line charger - they often caught out the South Newlandian defence with their positioning and led to a lot of good chances whenever they were on the ice.

HUFFMAN: And what did you think about the pair of goals scored by Deryn Koenigsmann?

SYDNEY: Very well deserved, that second goal late in the second period to tie it up was something you love to watch over and over again - just dancing his way through the defence before firing it into the top right corner of the net. A really tight squeeze of a shot, but he slapped it with that much power, there wasn’t much the keeper could do.

HUFFMAN: And in baseball - a decent lead over Vielfaltig which fell apart in the final few innings. Your thoughts?

SYDNEY: It was a disappointing showing I think to go 4-1 up and then trail off so harsh towards the end of the game, but it was always going to be a bit of an uphill challenge against Vielfaltig. The biggest thing the side can do now is keep their heads up - having lead our side through a couple of World Bowls it’s important to keep pushing as the right direction will come into view real quick, no matter the view of how the team is faring off the field.

HUFFMAN: Indeed. Let’s finally turn towards Chess, which Katzeburg is surprisingly one of the favourites to bring home the trophy, following the nation’s success at the last Elephant Chess Cup. But a 2-2 draw with NPU means the side sits squarely in the mid-table after the first matchday. Jim, your view?

KRANTZ: I have to say I know close to nothing about chess, so I would have to imagine a draw is a solid result?

HUFFMAN: It could be much worse, I can tell you that. Cameron, how do you see the side going over the rest of the group?

SYDNEY: Hopefully this initial draw, whatever the hell that is, is just a start to something bigger. The team may need to get to grips a little with the stage which does make sense, but hopefully they can start turning their games into wins soon enough.

HUFFMAN: Well, need I remind our viewers that at that fabled Elephant Chess Cup win, the Katzeburg side escaped the groups without a single win - drawing the majority of their games to eke out in the final knockout spot. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Turning quickly to the next matchday, Katzeburg take on Damukuni in a huge battle for both side’s aspirations at the Campionato Esportiva. The nation’s cricketers will be facing Esportivan Darmen as they look to get their campaign back on track, while in baseball - the side will be hoping for a miracle as they take on 16th-ranked TJUN-ia.

Ice Hockey sees the Snowcats also face a tough TJUN-ia outfit, while the Katzeburg chess delegation takes on The Grearish Union to try and pick up their first win of the competition. Arturo Mullenhaus wraps up the nation’s involvement in the karting, with the young racer to start second on the grid at the first race in Elephant Valley.

That’s all from us here at KBC Studios in Katzestadt, Thanks again for watching SportsHub and best of luck to all our competitors over in South Newlandia. Goodnight.

The Union's National Team in football makes their international sporting debut in the Campionato Esportiva. Football is popular throughout the country, although the National League is not known for producing teams of high quality when compared to other countries' domestic leagues. The national team hopes to bring together the stars from throughout the nation to form what can only be hoped to be a competitive team. The style of football played in NPU tends to be primarily defensive, with scoring focused on counter-attacking rather than striving for sustained pressure.

Having faced off against Fhulghamous Peninsula in the international debut, the team from NPU lost 0-1. A disappointing result, but hardly a bad one for a team so new. Their defense only had to break down once to do the team in and a lack of capitalisation of offensive opportunities prevented the team from equalizing.

HOCKEY
NPU 3-0 Vielfaltig

NPU dominated nearly every facet of this game as they romped for a 3-goal win over Vielfaltig, where the final score could have been much more lopsided. In a game that pitted NPU's fast and aggressive style against their opponents more conservative one, NPU seemed to win nearly every mismatch as they dominated in offensive zone possession, shots on goal, and on the scoreboard. Shots on goal ended up being a dominant 43-17 and the scoreboard reflected that. Despite facing low shot volume, goalie Hienadź Vachramiejeŭ played perfectly, not letting in a single goal

Goals:
Kawaloŭ (Žaboraŭ, Petrikonis) - depth scoring to open the tournament for NPU: a grinding cycle shift by the 4th line in the offensive zone led to a pass back to the point and a screened shot from defenseman Siamion Kawaloŭ beast Vielfaltig's Jordan Schirmer to make it 1-0
Sawicki (Maurer, Žuk)
Maurer (Sawicki) - following the opening goal, NPU's top line went to work with back-to-back goals for center Sawicki and winger Maurer. Getting Sawicki going should be a priority here, as he played in the top 6 at WCoH52, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist in the first 3 games before being held off the scoresheet for the remainder of the tournament, and seeing his ice time crater as a result.

HOCKEY
NPU 2-2 Katzeburg

Draw, draw, draw, draw. That was all those following the opening round of the Esportivan Chess Trophy got to see out of NPU and Katzeburg as the two countries faced off and came away with the most peaceful result possible. "If I have to see another Berlin Defense again I may take up checkers" was the comment overheard from one of the spectators in Newport. Katzeburg is known as a strong chess country, having won the Elephant Chess Cup, but is also known for promoting a solid and drawish style of chess, winning by the bare minimum. Very little interesting happened here, and unless one is looking for further proof that opposite-color-bishop endings are drawn the 4 games from this matchup need little further explanation.

CAMPIONATO ESPORTIVA 40 IN SOUTH NEWLANDIA
Quebecois Acadiana 0-1 Sangti and the Filindo Isles
Agilang Dilaw finally wins a Campionato Esportva match

ELEPHANT VALLEY - Vicenzo Frain can now have a sigh of relief, after Sangti and the Filindo Isles managed to beat Quebecois Acadiana, 1-0, courtesy of a JJ Boire goal just before halftime to give the Agilang Dilaw their first regional match win in a while.

A late fitness check failure for Tomio Sulangi forced Frain to put Boire on the starting lineup. Despite struggling to get goals in the team's previous campaigns, Boire was able to keep his spot in the SFI squad, which was unchanged for the past four tournaments entered. The entire first half was a dull affair, with limited opportunities taken by both teams, until Boire scored the opening goal in the 45th minute.

The rest of the match was uneventful, with Quebecois Acadiana trying to put the match at level pegging, but failed in each of their attempts with either their shots not being on target, or a stellar Sangtian defense thwarting every attempt their opponents did.

This was a supposed bye day by the Agilang Dilaw, but the format of this edition's Campionato Esportiva allowed teams having a bye in their own group to face another team from the other 5-team group having their bye day. As such, this gave them an advantage over other Group F teams, with an extra three points in their bag, but may be disadvantaged by the head to head tiebreakers as the win came at the expense of a non-Group F team.

SFI faces powerhouse Sylestone on Matchday 2.

Is it fair to say that the rise of Evangelos Kalyftakis through the ranks of the Esportivan Karting Trophy came as a surprise to literally everyone, even Gelo himself? It probably was, although there would have been some trainers in the HRH Prince Bismillah bin Kudarat Drivers’ Academy who would say that they had always seen the potential in Gelo and was now happy that he was finally living up to that potential.

Gelo’s dream, as with most other aspiring racing drivers of his age, was to make it to the absolute top of motorsports. It didn’t matter whether it was in WGPC or NSSCRA, although Gelo had to admit that he was more partial to the open-wheeler series than stock cars. After all, he had gotten his first taste of actual motorsports in a go-kart, and his training regimen in the Prince’s drivers’ academy had him focusing more on open wheelers. Gelo himself had been looking for opportunities to take part in a racing series before he made the massive leap up to the WGP2 level, and for a moment it looked like Tumbran Super Formula would have been a great place for him to debut. Gelo already had a deal in place with a team called Hoyalux, but before the season could get started, Gelo received a call from none other than the governor-general of the Fhulghamous Peninsula himself, Petrarchos Kulbano, who said that he wanted Gelo to represent the Peninsula in the coming Esportivan Karting Trophy. Gelo wasn’t really in a position to say no to the governor-general, and in any case, he was about to represent his home country (even though technically speaking the Fhulghamous Peninsula was a part of Abanhfleft) in international competition. Gelo wanted to get some more kilometers under his belt before stepping into TSF.

Gelo’s first time in South Newlandia soon took on a comforting pattern: He was not a good qualifier, and had never really been one, but he more than made up for it with his race pace. He finished on the podium in the first two races of the Karting Trophy, always rounding out the top three, but this consistency was what would eventually put him in the top 8 shootout at the end of the tournament. The only other driver with similar consistency as Gelo was Sentient Engine from Sylestone. No, the name wasn’t some sort of translation error or cultural thing. Gelo’s main opponent for the Karting Trophy was literally a sentient engine, something (someone?) that could fit into the engine compartment of a go-kart and power it (almost?) indefinitely. Gelo had recalled some time ago that Sylestone had sentient objects living within its borders alongside regular humans, but this was the first time he had seen one in the flesh. Or should that be in the metal? In any case, Sentient Engine and Gelo Kalyftakis emerged as the frontrunners for the Esportivan Karting Trophy, beating out other prominent names such as Ted Pressley, Rudy Edwards, Robin Dragonovic, and Nepö Kinder.

Gelo would claim pole position during qualifying for the third race of the Karting Trophy, seemingly against all odds and prior experience suggesting that he wasn’t really that good in one-lap pace. But despite losing out on the lead to Lane Carter, the eventual winner of the race in Trunkst (who admittedly qualified in P2 so there was really no harm done in Gelo losing the lead), Gelo’s previous haul of points as well as a P2 finish was enough to put him in the top 8, and those eight drivers would be the ones actually racing for the trophy itself in the final race of the tournament at Southern Newport. He was up against some stiff competition; Ted Pressley and Lane Carter were both bona fide WGPC drivers with experience in some of the fastest machines mankind had ever driven on a road. Sentient Engine needed no further explanation. Robin Dragonovic, currently driving for TJUN-ia’s Jaguar Racing in NSSCRA, had the support of a loud and enthusiastic home crowd behind him, practically a boost in horsepower and speed according to at least one retired driver. The Esportivan Karting Trophy was up for grabs to anyone who wanted to win it so badly.

Ted Pressley turned on the class and showed everyone else why he was a WGPC-caliber driver by putting himself in pole position for the championship race. However, to the surprise of everyone (including the man himself), Gelo Kalyftakis managed to sneak into second place after putting in a time that was just eight hundredths of a second away from the Tumbran. Gelo had already said time and again that he wasn’t a good qualifying driver, but perhaps the old maxim of experience being the greatest teacher of them all had been proven true yet again. Gelo had spent so much time practicing for a better quali result that they were all beginning to pay off. But he was still going to start the race in P2 at the end of the day. If Gelo wanted to bring home the Karting Trophy for himself and for the Fhulghamous, he would have to beat Ted Pressley for it.

The championship race did end up being contested by Pressley and Gelo. The race itself could be divided into threes: the first third was all about Pressley holding off Gelo and preventing the Fhulghamousian from getting past him. The second part turned into more of a melee as Gelo and Pressley swapped positions on more than one occasion, and both men showed that they were willing to throw their elbows out to keep the other guy at bay. But once Gelo took the lead on lap 15, he pulled away from the rest and never looked back. Ted Pressley did a good job hanging on to Gelo, but he was still three seconds and some change away once the Fhulghamousian took the checkered flag. Sentient Engine was seven seconds further back from it all, a surprisingly flat end to what had been a dominant run. Another old cliche had been proven true, and Evangelos Kalyftakis proved that consistency truly was the key as he lifted up the Esportivan Karting Trophy over his head to the cheers of a crowd decked out in gray and green.

Gelo had hoped that claiming the Esportivan Karting Trophy would get more eyeballs on him, but he also had to be racing somewhere in order to attract attention. And for whatever reason, Tumbran Super Formula remained on “indefinite hiatus” or words to that effect, leaving Gelo twiddling his thumbs and waiting for opportunities to open up somewhere else. In the meantime, Gelo would show up in the Campionato Esportiva to support his brother Polynikis, who was a defender for the Fhulghamous Peninsula national football team as well as its captain. The Colonists, as the Fhulghamousian football team was also known, had won the Campionato Esportiva in its 37th edition, the same time that Gelo had won the Esportivan Karting Trophy. Like Gelo, the Colonists had won the Campionato against all odds, and the team that they defeated in the final was none other than Sylestone, home nation of Sentient Engine. Some would think that that would have been enough to spark a rivalry between the two countries, but neither side seemed to take too much issue with the events in South Newlandia.

The same couldn’t be said two years later when Slembana beat the defending Campionato Esportiva champions in the quarterfinals of the competition in Riena and Doubeia. Everyone and their mother knew that the Fhulghamous Peninsula was much, much better than Slembana in every way possible, and that the defending champs should have dealt with their quarterfinals opponents easily. No one seemed to have informed Slembana of this though because they kept coming back time and time again before finally shocking the entire region by beating the champions on penalties. Gelo Kalyftakis was right there in Riena when he saw Slembana knock out his brother’s team from the Campionato, and he was more than willing to admit that he was pissed off about it. He was pissed off enough to side with Tumbra when they and Slembana met in the semifinals, and after that he was still pissed off about the earlier result that he sided with Hapilopper and hoped that the Esportivan newcomers would deny Slembana any sort of trophy in the third place playoff. The Hapiloppians did beat Slembana for the bronze, much to the delight and relief of embittered Fhulghamousian fans who wanted nothing more than to see the defeat of the team that had dared to knock them out of the Campionato.

Gelo was not there in Limey George to support his brother and the Colonists though, mostly because the new manager Branislav Vinogradovsky had instituted a limit to the people that could come with the team to the tournament. Gelo was able to watch on television as the Colonists went on a mission to redeem themselves in the 39th Campionato Esportiva, to right the wrongs brought about by Slembana and win the Campionato for only the second time in the colony’s history. And they were almost able to do it too until the ultimate football injustice slapped the Colonists in the face like a wet fish. Gelo was watching as the Fhulghamous Peninsula, which had been dominating practically every aspect of the final of the 39th Campionato Esportiva, fell behind by a single goal after Lozho’s first and ultimately only corner kick. His brother Polynikis Kalyftakis, once the hero of the Peninsula for leading them to their first ever regional championship, was now apparently the villain for putting the ball into the back of his own net while trying to clear it away.

Gelo couldn’t remember feeling anything other than shock after seeing his own brother inadvertently give their championship opponents the lead in the Campionato Esportiva final. Lozho haven't done anything in the game to show that they actually deserved to win the title, but they were going to be the ones lifting the trophy anyway because of a single mistake from the Fhulghamous Peninsula. Sometimes, bad things really did happen to good people when they least expected it. Once again the Colonists would be going back home empty-handed, and once again it was all their fault. The funny thing about what happened in Limey George though was that most of the Fhulghamousian people’s anger had been redirected towards Lozho, with most people angry that they had managed to steal the title that the Fhulghamousians felt that they deserved. Yes, it could be argued that Lozho didn’t deserve the title on the merits of what they did in the final match, but on the other hand, they had managed to make it all the way to the final in the first place. Some would argue that they had gotten lucky, but sometimes only luck was enough to make them stumble into an Esportivan championship.

The even funnier thing, for Gelo at least, was that there just wasn’t a damn thing that he could do about it. He wasn’t a member of the national football team after all; for all intents and purposes he was just another supporter of the Colonists. Just like everyone else, Gelo would have to stew in his own anger and disappointment at the result and wait for the next Campionato Esportiva for his brother and his teammates to correct the mistakes of yet another tournament gone begging. But when the landmark 40th Campionato Esportiva finally came around, Gelo realized that he had something else to worry about other than the Fhulghamousians doing well and maybe getting their revenge on Lozho. South Newlandia was once again hosting the Campionato Esportiva, and because of that, the Esportiva Sporting Festival was also back. One of the events confirmed to return in the Sporting Festival was none other than the Karting Trophy. Gelo knew he had to defend it however he could, as it could be the only trophy that the Fhulghamous actually had a decent shot at winning other than the Campionato itself.

The field that Gelo Kalyftakis encountered for the 2nd Esportiva Karting Trophy was different from the one that he had beaten all those years ago. Gone were the likes of Ted Pressley, Lane Carter, and Nepö Kinder; they were all now established WGPC drivers. Sentient Engine was also nowhere to be seen, although they (it?) was not in the WGPC or WGP2 as far as Gelo could tell. He did recognize a familiar face or two, like Robin Dragonovic; the South Newlandian driver simply could not be unavailable to bring honor and the trophy back to his home country. Carter’s place as the TJUN-ian representative was taken by Batu Tüvshinbayar, former WGP2 champion but currently without a ride thanks to Scuderia Orange Cow going into hiatus. But apart from them, Gelo was going up against a crop of new faces, and he had to expect that anything could happen once they were all out on the track. But maybe he shouldn’t be worried about anything just yet, especially after he had taken pole position in the very first race of the tournament. Gelo was pleased to know that he still had it, but as yet another cliche in racing went, there were no points awarded for qualifying. Gelo had to show up for the race itself, or else his defense of the Karting Trophy would go much worse than the Fhulghamous Peninsula’s defense of the Campionato Esportiva title.

On The Football Pitch

Kanzlia defeats the United Queendom

The Exiles managed to secure a convicing 3-0 victory over the United Queendom. Goals from Paulo Tiyan (21') and Sylverio van Coevorden with two (34', 70'), helps Kanzlia to top the group in MD1. Let's hope they can maintain this.

K in Karolin stands for Khonesty

It's been a week or so since I was arrested for reckless driving. My sentence was 6 months in this prison just outside of market square in Triewaal. Kanzlian films really made this place worse than what it is, but I'll be lying if I say I like staying here. I could've went to Kotr to study mechanical engineering but alas, I am to rot in prison. But anyways, I've been called up by the warden to the canteen during my lock-up time. I don't mind more minutes outside of a cell.

"Hale, you-" the prison guard stops for a moment, "Sorry, Hale-Forrester, you've got a guest wanting to talk to you." A scrawny man followed into the cleared out prison cafetaria. "He's a journalist from the Triewaal Herald." The guard turn his back to speak to the journalist. "You've got 20 minutes alright?"

"20 minutes? It says an hour here.", the journalist raised a certificate of somekind to the prison guards face.

"That's fake I'm afraid." the guard says annoyed, "But since I'm so nice, I'll still let you speak to her." The guard feign a punch. The journalist flinched, much to the guards satisfaction. "That's right, the timer already started when you came to prison, so better get going." The guard walk past the journalist and took up his spot in the corner of the cafetaria.

"Hey, nice to meet you. My name's Jacob." the journalist reaches out his hand towards me, which I accepted without much thought. "Right, so your video during your chase has made the rounds here, and I am looking forward to hearing what your side of the story is." He took out his notebook from his leather case, his right hand already preoccupied with a pen. "You know the police, they lie. But I can share the world your side of the story. Pretty good deal no?"

"There's a catch here. Has to be." I had my suspicions. Father never liked journalists, why should I?

"No, no, trust me nothings amiss here...." He pauses, "Well obviously I would gain a reputation boost of sorts if I'm the first to write and article about you, but beyond that, nothing! Honest."

"Honest to Zed?"

"Honest to Zed." He ends with a three-finger salute, "If you do refuse, then I'll have to leave. Do you really want to go back to your cell so quickly?"

Damn, he makes a good point. "Fine, whatever. What do you want to ask about anyways?"

His eyes lit up with excitement. "Brilliant! Well, we can always start with what you were doing before you went on rampage? Police reports says you were drinking with friends, is that true?"

"I was. Had a good time." That was the truth, I was drinking. "But that was hours before I took the car for a spin. I was already sober then. I hope."

"..uh-uh", the journalist jots down notes while he maintains eye-contact. "The car chase took place around 6PM in the evening, so you were drinking 2 hours before? Are you sure?" He eyes me up with suspicion.

"3 hours before, and yes I'm sure. I think."

"I was playing on the console with friends" this is true. But I was drinking aswell.

"Is that all you were doing?" the journalist asks as he paused his note-taking.

"Yep, we played some of that Back Of The Net Football stuff." In reality, we were playing a pirated copy of a banned game, but I wasn’t about to incriminate myself.

"I see, I do love their new setpieces implementations. Oh, the Tumbrans they finally seperated left and right setpieces aswell. Now with left, right, and deep setpieces seperated, It'd be great if they seperate up-north aswell."

"..yeah that was crazy. Mhm." I respond giving my absolute best approving nod, absolutely not understanding what this lanky reporter just said.

I lean in closer and whisper, "We were planning to rescue kittens from the local grandma."

"Really?" the journlist looks at me, puzzled.

"How'd you think I got this scar?" I say, pointing to the completely unscathed skin of my neck. "It healed already, so like, you can't easily tell, but it's there."

"..Okay" the journalist finally broke eye contact and looks down on his note. "..I can work with this."

*clank clank* the prison guard tapped the metal bars of the cafetaria door with his ring. "Ok buddy, 5 more minutes, better wrap this up before I lock her back in."

"Yes, yes of course." The journalist fumbles around his seat before looking back at me again, "Ok, this guard clearly can't count his seconds. I have 7 minutes left actually." He shoves his rusty grandpa-esque watch at me. "But whatever, one last question before I leave." He clicks his pen once more, "I assume you have read the police report already, they say you were driving recklessly to relieve stress, you just broke up with your longtime partner, you nearly ran over a cat, and that you are in need of mental support amongst other things." He leans in slightly. "Just keep it real with me, is the police report truthful or not?"

"Yes"

"..you're sure with that?"

"Mhm."

"...well ok then" He sighs slightly before continuing, "Karolin it has been nice talking to you. I'll make sure to get your words out, even though I can't help but feel you're kinda pressured by the environment. I'd love to speak again, but until then this will be it." he puts his pen back to his chest-pocket and his notebook in his case. "I do have your consent to publish this with the Triewaal Herald right?"

"Yep, do whatever you want with it."

"What?" I've never had a partner, ever. Where did they come up with that? "Are they making stuff up at this point?"

"Are you implying to me that the police report was... untruthfull?"

"Some of the stuff you said are outrageous yeah."

His eyes lit up again, "Such as?"

"I would never run over a cat, nor was I driving to ease my mind."

"Yes! Yes that's some great statements Karolin, so you would say that the police are lying? Yes or no?"

"Yeah I guess, I mean-"

"That's brilliant Karolin! Thank you so much for your time! I will share your words and the truth to Kanzlia whole, fret not!" He cuts me off and proceeds to leave the cafetaria with a certain joyful bounce in his step. I probably shouldn't have talked to him.

"Too late I guess."

Part 1 – The Triple Sports Approach, and how Clementine is holding onto this matter.

Clementine Lizbeth “Athena Mk. 3” Hinata Tanaka: At first, it seemed like a rather ill-fitting idea to have the substitutes and bench players from the Diodes to play in the other sports. That was a few factors, really. Firstly, I did not have the time to procure other Valentians (in this case, those from Alanis Star – either in Valentine Z or our territory in Esportiva), and hey, it was not like we are lacking in enthusiasm. In fact, we received a LOT of people who were trying out to get into our national football team, most of them being great and wonderful players from the local domestic teams. I will have to go and deal with that one day, of course. With that not being able to done, yes, that was when I decided that I would like to have the bench players into Chess and Karting. It was not a forced choice, of course! They all agreed to it and so we have the four chess players (what a coincidence that they all love playing it!), along with one kart driver. It was quite splendid, I shall say! And then come the results. Well, the karting wasn’t very sure yet since there was only the qualifications for the time being. The chess, on the other hand, was a little bit of a disaster. Actually, please do allow me to correct myself; calling it a disaster is a disservice to my players, I apologise! South Newlandia really got us in a bind, that was for sure, but it was not a total domination. We won a match, drew another one, and then yes, we lost the other two matches. I was a little surprised, but then I received data from the other events (ones that we as Valentians were involved in, not as Alanis Star) that yes, they’re indeed quite the masters when it comes to Chess! The likes of Adam Esteban, Khanyisa van Lundi, Elani Jabulan, and Cecilia Blossom giving us quite a thrashing. Perhaps we will wait for the next event, then an outcome for the Karting as well.

Ahhhh and then the surprise in the form of football! We took on the behemoth that was Tumbra’s National Team and we won! I could not believe it either – not that I had that much of a low opinion on my team, oh no. Once again, we were simply going up against the best. It does seem like we were going up against the best first so that we can then- well, I won’t say that! I don’t want that to be misinterpreted. Anyway, it was going off like what I expected for us – Tumbra got the first goal against us. No problem, we thought. We would just try to get goals against them so that we can at least call it a draw instead of losing out. We were not too good at playing defensively, so I told the team not to bother with that sort of thing. However, a miracle came in the form of Stella Silesius D. Concetta Iannaccone, quite a power kicker hailing from Monte Isola. I have seen her in the domestic games first-hand, and there was just one of those moments where you know that she got it. It was such a stellar performance, if you will, hehe. Oooh, going back to it, yes she was able to score both goals against Tumbra, and I was quite amazed. Typically, other than the likes of Holly Annemiek Gerrieke Van De Hoogte from Valentian Kittens, you rarely would have the single player scoring more than one goal. It’s not impossible, but we just don’t really focus on one player. So we did that, and we cheered and hailed, the usual things. More importantly – I am happy that we did NOT have any injuries from this match because as you can see, I have sort of delegated five of them to other events. I am not sure what will happen if there were injuries and then we need them. I have not thought of that as well as I thought, and I have enough RAM and computing power to make sure that these sort of situations are looked forward at. Hm, ah well!

Until next time, this should be coming soon once again! The karting results are one that I am looking forward a little bit more towards. For Chess, we will be facing Ethane; for Football, we will be facing Bongo Johnson. I’m not that programmed for being overconfident, but I can see the odds and well, I will say that if this goes on, the odds are in favour towards our team. Diodes – we move forward and making sure that the football goes towards THEIR goal!

Welcome Back to the Real World

If ever there was a team that needed a reality check, it was this one, right here and right now.

Bringing back the Eshian hockey team, and specifically with this group of players, seemed like a fun project to bring back the good old days, but this match against Osterhalten was the exact sort of thing they needed to remind them that yes, this was an actual hockey tournament, and their sort of shenanigannery wasn't going to be the most welcome thing on the planet.

The good news is that they weren't shut out... but that was about the only good news in this whole ordeal, with Dustin Banks allowing 4 goals to slip past him and everything seeming like it was about to fall apart. Just about the only good news here was that it really didn't get harder than this match: everyone else was a lot more beatable, starting with Polkopia on MD2.

"Okay Alex, I will have to admit that that one didn't go so well..." Jonas told the team's coach after the game.
"You think? I told you this was going to be a bad idea, why didn't you just listen to me instead of trying to chase after a dream that left you all behind a decade ago? What even was the point of all of this?"

These words, while hurtful, admittedly were ones that Jonas felt like he had to hear. Maybe this tournament wasn't a good idea. Maybe Eshialand wasn't a hockey nation anymore. Maybe it was just never meant to be...

However, once news that Eshialand was in fact fielding some form of team in this tournament reached home, some ears perked up that hadn't in many a year. Word spread around that hockey was back, and fan support was heard across m.esh.

"Why haven't we played hockey in so long? This is the stuff that Eshialand lives for!!!!"
"this is way more exciting than that chess shit that the king keeps peddling, bring back real sports we miss smhsmh"
"RAHHHHHHHH WE'LL GET THE NEXT ONE LET'S GO OWLS #HOCKEYISBACK #CHAMPIONSAGAIN"

When word of this fan support got back to the team, a new fire was lit under them. "Screw what Alex said..." Penelope told her teammates, "it's time for all of us to shine. We've got this."

football.
A Rocky Start

Surviving against Katzeburg with a draw... actually, not the worst thing in the world. Everybody knew Katzeburg was going to be a team to watch, so something like this happening was a sign of a dodged bullet, and one that could've gone straight through the Owls' hearts had it been a loss. But it wasn't, they were okay.

This all set things up for their next match, which... was Lozho. Either they win now and get revenge for the last edition's semifinals, or they would end up chasing any results they could get just for a hope to qualify for the knockouts again. Melissa Carey didn't wanna say anything, but it was starting to look a lot like the curses and demons of the past were watching... and they wanted to watch Eshialand bleed.

But it was only one match. One non-ideal result. Sure, their schedule may've been really talent-heavy early on, but that wasn't a reason to get themselves down. They had been in such a position many, many times before, but they always managed to pick themselves up and move on to the next win. This next match... was very winnable, actually. Lozho had also tanked a draw against Esportivan Darmen, and surely if ESD could get things done, the Owls had a very, very good chance to do the same. It was all about studying Lozho's flaws, and making the most out of the next match.

Melissa told her team to go back to the game tape, in a bit of a break from the vibes-based football that Kenny Morgan always espoused -- she knew that this match was very winnable, if the Owls knew what to expect and what to do. There were specific weaknesses that they needed to attack, and a general instruction to "play the best you can" wasn't quite going to cut it; it was like taking a battering ram on a wall with a single loose brick. They had to work on pushing out the one brick.

baseball.
Not the Slightest Spot of Rust

On paper, starting on a loss was, of course, bad. Nobody wants to start on a loss, but do consider the following: the Ellies were the best team in the multiverse, and they were playing this game at home. Losing by only one run was an incredible result for any team, and was a sign that this Owls team hadn't missed a beat since the last WBC.

Sure, they lost their first match, but given circumstances, there could be no more reassuring a sign that this Owls team could win their group, and this was momentum that they were going to carry right on into their next game against Tumbra, who limped to a 4-0 defeat against Ethane, becoming the only team in this tournament who failed to score a run in their first matchup.

Danny Perrin, who scored three of Eshialand's four runs through a two-out homer in the third (incredibly, his first hit in international play), expressed confidence about what was to come: "you know, I wish we could've gotten a bit more out of that game, but we did do our best here and I think this team played amazing. If we could do this in our first game in two years, well, you won't be ready for what we have up next."

When he was asked about his home run specifically, he had this to say: "did I think I was expecting to hit a home run? Honestly, no. I wasn't even expecting to be called up as a starter, I was thinking I'd be sitting on the bench for another year... that feeling was completely insane. When I saw it was going far, I didn't even think any of it was real... there was just something in the back of my mind saying 'Raffaele [Pohl] will catch it, don't worry, she'll never miss this catch...' but eventually I just kinda realised 'wait, that's too far for her, it's actually gone...' and that moment was just the most insane thing I've ever felt in my life."

chess.
No Such Thing as Washed

If you had heard that only one team from Eshialand would get a win in their first matchup, would you have been able to expect that team would be the chess team? Well, surprise, because in spite of all the talk about "dark ages", Eshialand made quick work of Kanzlia, with Jason Severn and Jamie Cartwright beating Alnya te'Grasker and Soraya te'Kotr, respectively, and Mary Nerata and Stephanie Jacobson picking up draws in their matches against Alex Torch and Timothy Ser.

The other teams to watch, Katzeburg and Vielfaltig, both did some very team-to-watch things, with Katzeburg holding a draw against the North Polish Union (possibly larger threats than the Eshian squad had realised!) and Vielfaltig getting a 3-1 win against the Grearish Union, this group was shaping up to be a very interesting one.

Matchday 2 would see Eshialand taking on the NPU, the first time players from these two nations will have met since Matchday 1... of ECC II. It has been a long time indeed, with that being 10 Eshian years ago! That matchup ended as a narrow win for Eshialand, 2½-1½, and it was a result that would be quite nice to repeat here. As for the other top teams in the group, it would be Katzeburg's turn to play the Grearish team, while Vielfaltig would take on Kanzlia. Lots of exciting chess had yet to be played, and everyone would be watching to see how things would develop.

politics.
Left Turn

The Eshian opinion of politics in Tumbra have been... less than positive, to say the least. Mainly, this has been because of Tumbra's aggressive colonisation of the Northlands, an act which has faced, albeit mostly quiet, condemnation from the government in Eshialand City. This, along with other factors, resulted in Eshialand's vote to join the Esportivan Union failing by a 23-357 vote in the House of Parliament back in 2030, as many Eshian politicians didn't see any worth in joining an alliance they say as being dominated by Tumbran colonisers.

As such, the internal workings of Tumbran politics had never been of much interest in Eshialand... until, that is, the recent developments from the Social Democrats gave the government some possible new political allies.

Much like Tumbra's new SDP leader, Janice Steinbach, Prime Minister Kevin Labbett has also been responsible for a push towards socialism here in Eshialand. "Recent events, such as the Lahaira Papers, have made things very clear to us that all of this growing privatisation has been nothing but bad for the nation. "The greed and recklessness of individuals such as Tony Beaujoleil has done a great harm to our nation, and we need to be more mindful of the dangers of end-stage capitalism in the future."

While the Liberal Party's agenda since taking power in 2026 had originally been much more centered on undoing the mistakes of the Reval administration, as well as reversing the isolationism originally espoused by David Peterson since modern Eshian unification in 2017, his second term has been much more focused on turning Eshialand in a socialist direction, with much harsher oversight of the nation's million- and billionaire class, and many public works projects focused on improving public transport options and putting cracks in the private sector's stranglehold on the economy. "Obviously, it's been a bit of a challenge to get here, but we've made great strides in making Eshialand a truly great nation of the future."

Support for this more socialist agenda, even among his own party, certainly hasn't been unanimous, but he remains a popular enough figure (as well as maintaining support from the even-more-popular King) that the necessary political allies have gone along with his plans, to great benefit to the people of Eshialand. His approval rate has recently been hovering around 63%, with just 7% saying he's done "outright harm to the nation", a vote mostly concentrated within higher income brackets more obviously adversely affected.

In Steinbach, Labbett sees a potential new ally, although he does of course remain doubtful that her ascension will have too much of an impact on Tumbran politics and the international stage. "Of course her views do align with my administration greatly, but at the end of the day she's still a fringe candidate from a fringe party. Of course, should the SDP gain political power and a space at the international negotiating table, I would greatly look forward to working together, but as of now I don't really see that happening anytime soon."
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

Welcome to the MD2 cutoff! While I have you here, I just want to clarify really quickly that you're under no obligation to roleplay all the sports that are going on at once - any roleplays will count for all the sports you've posted a roster for, so feel free to let inspiration guide you!
Also, dont get tripped up by the schedule - the next cutoff will be in about 48 hours.
Also also, full disclosure, the TJUN-ia RP below was counted for everything after cricket today and will be treated as if it had made cutoff going forward

Welcome to the 4th Esportivan Sporting Festival, including the 40th Campionato Esportiva - a special time where several TJUN-ian teams all rock up to the same nation and try and claim continental success for the watching public to enjoy. South Newlandia is going to be pretty busy over the next few weeks so I hope you are happy to enjoy the ride!

CE40
IN the realm of Football, a new dawn for the Jaguars has seen David Seems and Li Xiu YIng enter this CE as the #3 seed in the region behind only the last two champions of this competition - The Fulghamous Peninsula and Lozho. After making back-to-back WC Knockout Stages for the very first time, hopes were certainly high that we could translate this optimism and strength towards the regional prize. TJUN-ia has never really done well in either the IAC or the CE, but considering what we had managed so far, many were hopeful that the future could be bright. After more changes in the break, Diana Sharafutdinov is now the 9th Captain of this team, and with a lot of good players, the mission is simple: aim for our best regional performance ever.

The EsportivArena in Newport will host all of our games in this group stage, starting with #24 Macbon. Everyone knew that, considering our aims and ambitions for the games to come, we had to get as much momentum as possible...and so we did. It certainly wasn't easy at all as Macbon actually took the lead in the 18th minute of the game, but we knew we had what it took to break through the pain and suffering of the past, and so we pushed forward and got it done. Sharafutdinov got the equaliser in the 41st, a nice little dink over the keeper, before Stephan Fiedtkou headed home the eventual winner of a Zane Bowry corner in the 67th. The job was done, and so this journey began again.

Espo T20 V
You can feel that this era of the Bowlin' Jaguars is coming to an end. Although we didn't play on the opening day of this Espo T20, the ambition is clear—to prepare for the upcoming ODI World Trophy and the curtain call.

Esportivan Baseball Trophy IV
Over in the world of Baseball, the hype is building towards the 60th WBC - but for the Battin' Jaguars, a new era has already begun. Phillip Hellas-Verona is gone and with that, the Vojtěch Heyrovský Era has officially begun. It was this guy, alongside Assistant and younger brother Josef, that famously won the 20th IBS but with both lineup changes and a title defence to deal with, he will certainly have a lot on his plate early on. His first big decision for this cycle? Bringing back a legend of the game, Bryce Calhoun, to be the new Batting Coach. But will that work?

At Elephant Stadium in Elephant Valley, we kicked things off by taking on a regional staple - Esportivan Darmen. Kimi Holvanen vs Gilbert Barclay and despite us being WBC regulars and "EsDar" being debutants, this game ended up being a lot closer than one might think. In a game with no DH, Bartholomeus Beck (solo bomb) and Dudley Peck (via Geoffroy Winslow) would counter a bomb from Fernando Rodrigo Viera to make it 2-1 early on - and the lead would extend to 3-1 thanks to a Maurice Stephenson bomb in the 4th. We weren't exactly in the best position, and Holvanen would end up being called in for Khamis Ali Makame - which did end up going very well indeed. Makame stabilised things enough for our batting corps to attempt a comeback - one that would come in the 7th and 8th thanks to Palila Kalawai’a and Holly Davids. Extras seemed inevitable after that, but the drama wasn't over just yet as the introduction of the pinch runners at 2nd (Killian Desjardins and Valentin Herzog respectively) would add an extra element of drama. Both teams brought them home in the 11th, thanks to Li Chen Sho and Alvin Morris, and so we were forced to go to an 12th inning. That would end up seeing Martina Andrade de Souza bring Herzog home and while EsDar tried to do the same, Trinity Shelby-Dowora said no. TJUN-ia won in 12 but holy smokes, that was close!

Esportivan Ice Hockey Trophy III
Another team defending a regional title are the Ice Jaguars, a team who are certainly aging but still brilliant in their prime. Ølson Rasmussen is still hopeful of the abilities of these guys, but after a disappointing WCoH, could they bounce back in South Newlandia? In the Valley Rink of Elephant Valley, our first clash would come against a debutant in the form of the Glorious State of Kanzlia, and like their baseball counterparts across town, this game was closer than expected in a big way. Yun Pong-chol and Graham Cox got the scoring started for us, but Sven de Ruijter ended up responding in kind in the 1st. The 2nd would see Carter Marshall get a brace, only to be Bram Dijk to respond as well - leaving it 4-4 with one period to go. Archanis Holloway scared everyone by taking the lead with 10 to go but a superb effort from both Liu Min-Chun and Aoki Mawanaka would see us escape with the 6-5 win. And breathe.

Esportivan Karting Trophy II
Despite his new ambisions as the OGP, Batu Tüvshinbayar was thrilled to get the call to come to South Newlandia to represent TJUN-ia in the 2nd EKT. Lane Carter ended up coming 4th the last time this competition was run, but that was in a smaller field compared to the 14 that turned up to the Elephant Karting Track in Elephant Valley for Round 1 of 6. For this competition, only the Top 6 at the final Qualifying will make it to the Championship Race, so getting those points down on the board will be crucial if he wants to make it that far.

The Elephant Karting Track is a place that is quite technical, even by karting standards, and so he knew that things might get tough in terms of his concentration. Evangelos Kalyftakis, the defending champion of this regional series, took pole by inches over Arturo Mullenhaus and Tricia Khoo with Robin Dragonovic in 6th and Batu in 7th. That will be the status of the grid heading into next week, which is when the 1st race will be held.

Esportivan Chess Trophy
Instead of Handball, Chess is making its Sporting Festival debut with the inaugural Esportivan Chess Trophy (ECT) - and considering TJUN-ia's history with the sport, you just knew the Jaguar Knights had to be here. Right in between the successful hosting of the MCC's Grand Casaran and the next Elephant Chess Cup, the Knights are back to their foursome ready to try and win a regional title to go alongside those two ECCs.

Kaumann Holds TJUN-ia to a Draw, Still Top of the Group!
Newport, South Newlandia - A nail-biting clash unfolded at the EsportivArena as Kaumann faced off against TJUN-ia. "Let's just call them Tajunia*, it's easier," joked Sudyatma Gemilang during the halftime break. The match lived up to its billing, packed with intensity from the first whistle.

Belle Whitewater drew first blood for Tajunia in the 25th minute, sending their supporters into a frenzy. However, Kaumann refused to back down. Their relentless pressure paid off in the 81st minute when Evan Schnelling's powerful header found the back of Gao Wu Shi's net, leveling the score and igniting celebrations from the Kaumann faithful.

"Their fighting spirit was incredible, a match for our own," Putra Florian commented in a post-match interview with South Newlandian media and Kaumanner journalists covering the event.

Budi Vettel Grabs a Point, Feeling Good After Tough Race
Elephant Valley, South Newlandia - Budi Vettel, Kaumann's karting ace, steered his way to an 8th-place finish in a grueling race at the South Newlandia circuit. Despite grappling with engine issues throughout the competition, Vettel's determination and skill shone through.

"A lot of drivers got disqualified, but our team managed to finish the race," Vettel said with a relieved smile. "See you at the next circuit, New Colk Racetrack!"

The below is a transcript from a special edition of long-running KBC program SportsHub, focusing on the current Esportivan Sporting Festival in South Newlandia.

HUFFMAN: A hat-trick from Katzeburgian superstar Drake Wruck puts the Blue Cats into a prime position in the Campionato Esportiva; another slow day at the office for our cricketers, and a podium finish for Arturo Mullenhaus - I’m your host, Otis Huffman, and welcome to KBC Studios for a special edition of SportsHub on the Esportivan Sporting Festival. Joining me tonight in the studio is Eugene Phillips, manager of Katzestadt Rovers fresh off their win of the Katzeburgian National League, and Ynysgard town councillor Nora Keller, better known to avid sports fans as a member of the historic Elephant Chess Cup winning side. Welcome both.

PHILLIPS: Pleasure to be on, Otis.

KELLER: Thanks for the invitation onto this brilliant programme.

HUFFMAN: Eugene, just want to start with you quickly - after a couple of seasons of struggle compared to your cross-city rivals, how did it feel to get your Rovers side over the line this season?

PHILLIPS: It was a brilliant feeling, Otis. The whole team was really rallying hard this season as we knew we hadn’t lived up to the expectations we wanted to set the last couple of years, and it was heart-warming to see the community fall behind us in support. It was a little nerve-wracking to be honest, knowing that Katzestadt AFC were so close behind for a good chunk of the run in, but that helped gel the team together knowing we could show them up if we stuck to the course.

HUFFMAN: And of course, Champions League football for you next season, are you worried about how the team may compete at that level?

PHILLIPS: It’s obvious that Katzeburgian football is on the rise and I’m confident that on the IFCF stage we can mix it with the best - you only have to look at the Royals and how they fared last year! Having an IFCF final on our shores this season is a huge landmark moment as well and I’m thrilled to see the Associations Trophy coming to Katzestadt - we just have to hope we can be there playing for it on the pitch should our Champions League campaign not go through to the end as well!

HUFFMAN: Nora, turning to you and thanks for coming onto SportsHub - it’s fair to say the Elephant Chess Cup win was a shocking moment in our young international sporting history, what was it like lifting that trophy over in Eshialand?

KELLER: It was surreal Otis. We just went over to test ourselves more than anything, and the run to the final was totally unexpected, especially after sneaking out of the group stage! But there was a lot more to it than just chess, and the team really came together over in Eshialand which was pleasing to see - a nice strong show of community spirit.

HUFFMAN: And it’s clear that the impact its had on chess and its popularity in the nation has exploded as a result - we’ve got a team in the Esportivan Festival and another group of three - including two of your friends at the Ynysgard Chess Club - over in TJUN-ia competing in the Grand Casaran. Is it exciting to see the impact you’ve made on the sport?

KELLER: It’s lovely to see, to be honest with you. Chess is a brilliant game which anyone can come in and have fun with, so to see it become as popular as it has is really heart-warming. Knowing that my own skills on the chess board, even if I don’t play as much as I used to, has played a role in that is a really nice feeling, and I can only wish our teams the best of luck as they crack on.

HUFFMAN: Indeed. We’ll get onto the chess in a moment, but let’s start with the Campionato Esportiva, where Katzeburg rocketed to a 4-2 win over Damukuni thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from none other than Rovers forward Drake Wruck. Wruck fired home twice in the opening half hour to give the side a 2-0 lead, before Vera Horsfall found the back of the net to give the side a 3-0 lead at the break. A minor fightback from Damukuni saw the margin cut to one, before Wruck would nab his third in the 60th minute and secure the Blue Cats a huge three points for their knockout aspirations. Eugene, a commanding win for Katzeburg and two Rovers on the scoresheet; how did it feel seeing Drake and Vera score for the country?

PHILLIPS: It was a brilliant win and just what we needed after that opening day draw with Eshialand. Drake was immense up front and brought the quality we’ve so often seen on the international pitch for Katzeburg and it’s a performance we should be showing every young striker - he was constantly in the right spot at the right time which is half the battle in itself. Vera was also fantastic, but more so for her linkup play throughout the game - her goal was just a lovely cherry on top.

HUFFMAN: Are you feeling a bit more confident that the side can get out of the groups following that win?

PHILLIPS: Let’s not test our fate yet, there’s still plenty of football to go and some great teams left to play - the Starsians are quality and rightly leading the group so far, and Quebecois Acadiana may be having a slow start but we can’t rule them out - those are two real tough games coming up.

HUFFMAN: But surely four points against two of the top three teams in the group outside of ourselves has to be a positive?

PHILLIPS: Definitely - I think Becka Haberkorn has done well to get what she needs from the team so far and if we can repeat those results over the next two matchdays, we should be swimming towards a knockout berth.

HUFFMAN: My thanks. Nora, let’s turn to you to dissect Katzeburg’s performance in the Chess, with the representatives from the Waldstein Chess Club running out 3-1 winners over The Grearish Union. Historically, it’s the chess teams first ever group stage win in a team competition and pushes the side into the top three. How did you see the matchup falling?

KELLER: It was an interesting clash and credit to the Waldstein team, they really showed up and dominated the first two boards. Brian and Rowena are quality players, and from what I’ve heard have been real challengers to our club back home in competition play - so to see them get wins is not surprising. The third and fourth boards very much did the role they needed to; not drop games and just see out the results to secure the win and they’ve done well in that regard.

HUFFMAN: Big clash up next as Katzeburg take on Vielfaltig in a game which could have big ramifications on the group layout. How do you see that matchup going?

KELLER: Vielfaltig are a quality team and a really strong chess nation - they are going to be a thorn in the sides of our team. We’re a little lucky that they’ve sent some of their best over to TJUN-ia but that doesn’t escape the fact they are topping the group after two rounds. If we can somehow eke out a win then we’ll be in great stead for making it through to the next round, but a loss sees us on the back foot, especially with Eshialand still to play.

HUFFMAN: Is it a case of higher expectations because of our success in the Elephant Chess Cup?

KELLER: Absolutely. That was a huge shock win, and I think there are a lot of nations which view us as a rising giant of the sport. I think the data isn’t there yet. If we can put in a good showing in this trophy, then I’d say it’s a fair argument to make, but at the moment our status could very much have come down to nothing more than dumb luck.

HUFFMAN: Interesting thoughts there. Let’s turn to the Espo T20, which saw Katzeburg’s struggles continue on the wicket, falling to Esportivan Darmen by 72 runs. Eugene, what do you think is going wrong with our cricketers?

PHILLIPS: I think it seems like we’re too slow off the mark when it comes to scoring runs. Both games we’ve gotten nowhere near the 10 runs an over you need to compete at this level, and although we were slightly better this time around, it still was a far cry from our opposition.

HUFFMAN: How does the team fix that?

PHILLIPS: I don’t know, to tell you the truth. I imagine if you’ve got a cricketer here, they’d say the team needs to be more aggressive, more willing to go for the big plays than our team at the moment. And that’s probably fair. I think our team could also benefit from just some belief filtering into them, it’s been a rough start and it’s not going to get much better in terms of going up against tougher teams, so the team really needs to build that faith around themselves that they can compete here.

HUFFMAN: Nora, your thoughts?

KELLER: I’ve not seen much cricket, but from what I saw of the highlights of the game we just weren’t hungry enough to pile on the pressure, especially when in the field. Just a slight tweak to how we line up might benefit the squad when it comes to bowling.

HUFFMAN: Fair. Turning quickly to the other sport where we’ve not had much traction yet in South Newlandia - baseball. Katzeburg started red-hot against TJUN-ia, scoring four runs in the first two innings as the side raced to a 4-1 lead, but that would be all she wrote as the side failed to score again. TJUN-ia would nab another five runs as they stormed to a 6-4 win. Nora, are Katzeburg plainly forgetting a match lasts nine innings?

KELLER: It’s a possibility I guess? Both times so far the team has really seemed exhausted midway through the game despite a quick scoring start. The consistency is the real kicker, the team just hasn’t been there as it falls into the final stretch.

HUFFMAN: Eugene, barin for your thoughts?

PHILLIPS: Totally agree. The baseball side to be fair is a new squad, and they’re performing admirably given the circumstances, but to see two games in a row blow leads of that nature is worrying, especially as there’s not much more time to turn it around in the group stage.

HUFFMAN: Well, one sport they won’t be worrying about breaking their duck of winning is in Ice Hockey, as the Snowcats secured their first win in history with a shock 5-4 win over TJUN-ia. Eugene, what happened here?

PHILLIPS: I honestly cannot tell you! TJUN-ia are a top, top side - literally a top 10 team - and they must have expected us to lie down and take the defeat with ease. It was a brilliant and gritty showing from the side which I don’t think anyone was expecting, especially given TJUN-ia had a 4-3 lead heading into the final period.

HUFFMAN: Absolutely - It was again the performance of Deryn Koenigsmann which stole the show for the Snowcats, with a late brace in the third securing the victory. Nora, is Koenigsmann the next big Katzeburgian sports star?

KELLER: He’s certainly playing like it! I don’t think anyone expected us to compete against TJUN-ia but players like Deryn which have that x-factor often refuse to go quietly into the night. I think it’s clear the national team has a star in its ranks with that third period showing, and if they can build around him going forward, the national team might be able to rocket the popularity of ice hockey as a whole in Katzeburg.

HUFFMAN: We’ll have to see. Finally, let’s turn to a huge success in the karting, as Arturo Mullenhaus secured a podium finish in Elephant Valley to get off the mark points-wise. Nora, what would Arturo be thinking as he stood on that podium?

KELLER: Probably along the lines of how he could do a little better, but excited nonetheless as to finishing in the top three. He’d no doubt be disappointed to drop behind the brilliant karter from Kanzlia to lose out on that second position, but there’s a few races to go and plenty of time to hit that purple form of consistency.

HUFFMAN: Eugene, do you think Mullenhaus is a title competitor following that first race?

PHILLIPS: I think he’s in with a shout to be fair. Evangelos Kalyftakis is by far the odds-on favourite, and it was a commanding win from the Fhulghamous Peninsula racer. But if he can keep pace with the front runners like he did here, then why not? He could easily lift the trophy at the end of the event.

HUFFMAN: Thanks for your time. Mullenhaus will next be racing at New Colk, with a starting position of third, so here’s hoping he can retain his position at the top of the charts. Meanwhile our ice hockey team faces a Vielfaltig side which got a shock win over South Newlandia and in baseball the side will look to break their duck against top-ranked South Newlandia - a potential thrashing on the cards against the Elephants. In chess, Katzeburg will take on co-group leaders Vielfaltig in a huge clash for group permutations, and in cricket the side will look to get back on track with a matchup against TJUN-ia: another tough matchup for the side which is hurting for form. Finally, in football the Blue Cats will hope to keep their campaign flying with a clash against Quebecois Acadiana - a game which with a win would put the side in very good stead of securing knockout football and can be viewed on KBC 2 tomorrow evening.

From KBC Studios here in central Katzestadt, I’d like to thank Eugene Phillips and Nora Keller for joining me here tonight on SportsHub. I’m Otis Huffman and thanks for watching. Goodnight.

FOOTBALL
NPU 0-1 Hapilopper

HOCKEY
NPU 6-8 Kanzlia

In a high scoring match where defense was optional, NPU fell to the side from Kanzlia despite scoring six goals. In the rare sort of game that sees all four goalies getting game action, repeated breakaway chances by both teams combined with lackluster effort in the defensive end make this look like a rec-league shootout.

Goals:
Wojciechowski [unassisted] - Ireneusz Wojciechowski scored after being a penalty shot only 7 minutes into the game after being tripped on a clear breakaway, puuting the puck high glove side on Casper Meijer
Žuk (Sawicki) - Kanstancin Žuk breaks an 11-game international scoring drought, despite having played all 11 games in the team's top 6
Nowik (Šawieł, Zablocki) - Nowik is known for his powerful slapshot, and this was a vintage example
Zablocki (Nowik) - goals on back-to-back shifts for the 2nd-line/1st-pairing combination. These put NPU up 4-2 midway through the second period. Although play on the ice has been chaotic, everything is going smoothly, with a two-goal lead...
Maurer (Sawicki) - ...and yet the next goal only tied the game at 5. Kanzlia scored three goals in the last half of Period 2, which saw goalie Hienadź Vachramiejeŭ benched and replaced with Nił Nawumčyk as the team came out for the 3rd. Nawumčyk would go on to surrender a sixth goal, which led to the decision to pull the goalie entirely and go with six skaters in the closing minutes in a desperate attempt to equalize.
Iwanoŭ (Šawieł, Zablocki) - This goal only made it 6-7 as NPU had already surrendered an empty-net goal. They would go on to surrender another in the closing seconds to seal their loss in a 6-8 affair.

Such a poor defensive showing raises serious questions for the team heading into a matchup with TJUN-ia, a team to whom they lost to twice (1-4, 2-3) in the group stage of WCoH52. These questions are particularly painful after a perfect defensive showing in Game 1, although Vielfaltig's complete inability to get anything going offensively may have had more to do with that than good defensive play. Will fans see Vachramiejeŭ or Nawumčyk in net? Will the team's production stop beng so top heavy (the bottom 6 forwards have only 2 even-strength points between them)?

CHESS
NPU 1-3 Eshialand

Moeller - Severn, ½
Nerata - Hryc, 1-0
Gorski - Cartwright, ½
Jacobson - Kowalski, 1-0

With this loss, NPU ends the second matchday having gone 0-3 between football, hockey, and chess. The chess team has yet to register a win on any board (much like the football team's lack of goal scoring) with a 1-3 loss today (+0, =2, -2). Moeller and Gorski managed draws on Boards 1 and 3, but Hryc and Kowalski lost on boards 2 and 4 to hand Eshialand a comfortable victory. There's still plenty of time for them to make their way back into the competition, but a more decisive mentality will be needed.

Farhan Dhanab looked out over the Elephant Valley track. One immense straight and more hairpin turns than he would've liked, but he was happy to be at a track that wasn't the Zairdah Speedway with its shallow, wide turns. A very easy track to get Irithoreni involved in karting - and more so to let foreign car builders test their prototypes on something that wasn't straight tarmac - and so far out into the sticks that any training done there means that's it for your day. Forget about any other big activity, it'll take you half the day just to get back to civilisation.

Back in the day he would have entire training days to himself. Just him and Karim Dafiyrah, the guy picked to represent Irithoren in karting in a previous Sporting Festival. It was nice of the country to select him over Karim, still a much bigger name in international karting, but perhaps on the older side. Either way, what started as a simple, small group of people grew into an industry, of pit lanes, safety measures, side events, and a lot of prototype testing. The karting itself was a side issue now: as soon as the rest was done making money off of the asphalt, amateurs like him and Karim could find an hour here or there to hone their skills.

It wasn't just karting these days. Everything is an industry in Irithoren now - the quaint harbour of Dhidiyah now covers half the town's coast, and beaches, if still there, were barely usable and polluted. They were still safe to visit in official communications, but locals haven't shown up, and they know best. The town square was more an event location now, with dignitaries from the Constellation visiting every other week. Irithoren is a 'big' nation now, as much as a territory of half a million could be big. Of course, within Esportiva most would've heard of the place by now, but few would have visited it, and even fewer could name any major industry. The fact is, however, that things have been moving. Sure - they can't challenge a regional powerhouse - but the days of being Esportiva's laziest corner are over. Especially in the Constellation, the territory's thrown its weight around.

So, on Farhan's last training day before departing for South Newlandia, he found Zairdah Speedway unusable and crowded. The Mercatorenian delegation was there, testing vehicles and figuring out trade deals while pledging support to Prime Minister Fizairdah's proposal for a Constellation constitution. It's clear where the priorities are: the Constellation and its money rather than Esportiva and its traditions. Farhan didn't like it - and he wasn't the only one.
