Demonym: Eastfielder

The Imperial Commonwealth of Eastfield Lodge is a vast conglomerate of nations and states that resides almost entirely in a separate dimension to the reality you all know and love - a bubble universe would be an apt description (the why is a long story, involving the Dreamed Realm and a threat to the existence of the entire universe). The one bit of the country that lies in the regular dimension is a tiny island in the northern seas of the famous sporting region Rushmore, which serves as a transport hub for travel across the region by conventional transport, and for travel to the Imperial Commonwealth via something called a Void Ship (think of it like travelling through a well controlled wormhole).

The history of the country is long and complex, but the key overview is that it is a very socialist Muslim constitutional monarchy, with a noted reputation as being one of the nicest places to visit in the entirety of the known multiverse - the most recent WA census puts the Imperial Commonwealth in the top 100 nations in several measures such as Safety, Compliance/freedom from crime, Tourism, Weather, Compassion, Niceness and Environmental Beauty, amongst several others; most of which are also ranked as the best in the Rushmore region. Because of the initial portal, the nation advanced forwards in leaps and bounds technologically due to intermingling with denizens of another dimension, various alien races from the universe in which the popular RLStates TV show Doctor Who is situated. Whilst these aliens used to take part in life in the Imperial Commonwealth, even forming the Eastfielder National Team for a number of tournaments, they no longer exist in this bubble universe, due to a dimensional shift no longer aligning the two dimensions - for now, Eastfield Lodge only contains those beings that you find elsewhere in the NS multiverse.

Whilst we are a fairly chill nation, we are still fairly socially conservative, and there are plenty of special rules visitors need to be aware of:

No Alcohol. At all.
No smoking or recreational drugs at all. Visiting team members/fans will be given replacement/cessation therapy if struggling to cope.
No public displays of affection. What you get up to in the privacy of your own hotel room is up to you, as long as it stays there.
There isn't a legally enforced dress code, but at least dress respectfully, the locals will appreciate you.
Cities are by and large car-free zones; make use of the extensive public transport system.
Don't worry about a language barrier, there is an inbuilt telepathic translation circuit within the visas that you will be issued - it translates all speech and text into a language you understand instantaneously.
No unhealthy junk food will be available, the country is too healthy for that. Also, the food will all be halal, but there is an extensive range of vegetarian/vegan options for those who insist.
Ignore all the cameras and the police presence. They're for the safety of everyone.
High-level technology pervades every aspect of society and life here, get used to it.

Lodger City Memorial Stadium
Location: New Lodger City
Capacity: 150,000
Description: The home of Eastfielder football, the stadium was built on the ruins of the old capital of Eastfield Lodge, Lodger City, which was flattened in a double disaster (severe floods from dams bursting and an explosion from an unknown source, killing much of the population of the city and rendering the city useless. Administrative functions were transferred over to Lodgertia, the city began to be rebuilt, and it was decided that this stadium would be one of the monuments erected in place. The inside walls contains inscriptions of the names of all the dead – just under 9 million. The stadium used to play host to the two classic giants of EL football – RGS Athletic and VLC FC - until both had their new stadiums finished; it is now only used for internationals and cup matches.

Parliament Stadium
Location: Lodgertia
Capacity: 80,000
Description: Formerly the second largest stadium in Eastfield Lodge (until King Iqbal II and Vorgan Park were completed), behind the Memorial Stadium in New Lodger City, it was built in the centre of Lodgertia, the capital of Eastfield Lodge, and the Imperial Commonwealth. It was named due to the fact that the Parliament is based just a few hundred metres down the road; in fact, the original stadium was actually joined to the Parliament building, as an area where MPs could watch or even engage in sport with the public, as well as being a designated protest site. However, with Lodgertia becoming more built up, it was decided that the stadium needed to be built up as well. It is home to Lodgertia United and Lodgertia City alongside being temporary hosts of RGS Athletic and VLC FC (when Lodger City was being rebuilt), and in the past has hosted several international matches, including the final of SBCC 27 and a group in both stages of Market Cup 4.

Tavernia Stadium
Location: Tavernia
Capacity: 65,921
Description: Currently the largest stadium outside of Eastfield Lodge itself, Tavernia Stadium sits near the heart of the city of Tavernia, in Westmeadow Tavern, the nation bordering Eastfield Lodge. WC85 will see the stadium's debut when it comes to hosting the Eastfield Lodge National Team, but it is no stranger to WC football though - it was the home ground for Westmeadow Tavern when they had their own international football team in the earlier years of the Imperial Commonwealth. It is also home to the two best teams in Westmeadow Tavern, with FC Tavernia and Tavernia City plying their trade here.

Manager: Corinne Mersiades (Yuezhou)
Age: 56. Corinne Mersiades was announced as the first ever foreign manager of Eastfield Lodge after the retirement on long-term servant Robert Andrews following a historic quarter-final run in the Imperial Commonwealth's first ever World Cup finals on domestic soil. Having initially cut her teeth in the lower tiers in Nephara as manager of Cranequin City, Mersiades then joined the Yuezhou national team setup as assistant manager, helping them to three consecutive World Cup appearances in 7 years. Her brief is very simple - to turn the Imperial Commonwealth into regular World Cup qualifiers, and with the expanded field, into eventual knockout round regulars. Her reign did not get off to a great start, an abysmal performance at Copa Rushmori 55, although having only been appointed for a short period of time beforehand, here's hoping this will the time she needs to properly mould the squad into contenders.

NB: As the people of EL are extremely compassionate, and very civilised (despite what you may say about the religion), it would be uncharacteristic for the coaches/players to lose their temper, dive deliberately (jumping out of the way of bad tackles and falling awkwardly doesn't count), to be sent to the stands (if the ref is clearly very biased however...), spit, argue with the ref or fight. Players will also tend to inform the referee about mistakes/clarifications in judgement regarding throw-ins, fouls given but with no contact and goal kicks/corner kicks (plus other bouts of honesty - up to you).

The post-beaning era has undoubtedly been Vdara’s greatest in terms of footballing success. Three consecutive qualifications and a first knockout stage appearance was more than they had achieved ever before, and fans and pundits alike have been delighted to see it. Bio
Where is Vdara? What is Vdara? Who are Vdara? Is it a state? It’s a state of mind, that’s for sure. Established during the times of Ancient Greek colonisation, the first Vdaran settlement was in the modern day capital city of Chania, where a valiant crew had stumbled upon after setting off from Athens, and decided to settle down. This settlement evolved into a city, and this city decided to set up its own settlements, spreading Vdaran culture and ideals across many of the Mediterranean islands, creating their own archipelago. The Vdaran archipelago would go on to change hands several times over the next few millennia, being held by the Turks, Venetians, and Greeks - to name just a few. Fast forward to the present, and now you have a gyro-eating, sports-loving nation with a people who are dedicated to following Vdaran football loudly and proudly. They’ve seen the highs, and they’ve seen the lows, and they’ll now see the present. Fiercely committed to defending their honour, every single Vdaran - from the players, to the coaches, to the ordinary man or woman chilling on their couch, shouting at their television - will be readily available to convince people that, no, Vdara are not has-beans. They’re the real deal.

You may levy your sanctions, and you may spread your discrediting materialistic propaganda pieces, but you can never stop a Western Vdaran Air Service flight from touching down on your runway!’ - the third leader of West Vdara in as many months

State-Approved Biography

The People’s Democratic Republic of Vdaran Western Territories, more commonly known as West Vdara, is a small group of islands located off the west coast of Africa. Having separated from the Republic of Vdara during a period of political turmoil for the ruling communist party (KKV), many of the nation’s important left-leaning figureheads fled to the newly-established nation to ensure the continuation of an ideal socialist paradise as Crete and Cyprus began to seek more moderate politics. Since then, West Vdara has enjoyed a period of relative peace and isolation, with neither the Republic nor the West seeking any form of immediate unification - in fact, quite the opposite, despite some attempts to mend and strengthen the ties between the two. The KKV have easily sustained political dominance in the country, having won every election since 1995, leading many to label West Vdara as a dictatorial, one-party state. Despite this, the KKV maintains that all elections are free and fair, decrying all doubters as ‘agents of Chania’ and preventing independent observers from keeping an eye on things.

State-Approved Geographic Info

There are seven islands that make up West Vdara:-

- Nifaria: With a population of just under a million, Nifaria is West Vdara's largest and most important island, with all government business going through the capital city of Agios Stavros. Mountainous and agricultural, Nifaria serves as the nation's main source of sustenance, with bananas and fish serving as crucial parts of the West Vdaran palate. Most footballers from the squad hail from this island.

- Kanaria: Slightly smaller in both population and landmass, Kanaria could just as easily be called "Nifaria's wee brother". The island nonetheless serves as West Vdara's industrial hub, with factories and ports across the island allowing it to be the nation's transport and export hub.

- Ploufialia: Small and agricultural, Ploufialia is mainly known for its vineyards more than anything else. This does, however, mean that West Vdaran wine is quite divine.

- Ombrion: A rather unassuming island, Ombrion is primarily known for its avocados and cattle - as well as its volcanic activity, making the soil extremely fertile and thus very suitable for agricultural usage.

- Tzounonia: Miniscule and boring. Let's move on [NOTHING SECRET IS OCCURRING ON THIS ISLAND].

- Planasia: One of the larger islands by landmass (but not by population), Planasia's size and lack of population allows for it to be used as West Vdara's dairy and cereals capital, with nationalised cheeses and grains making their way to the rest of the islands from the various farms and mills.

- Kapraria: Tiny and forested, not much goes on here either, so long as you don't look in the- [NOTHING SECRET IS OCCURRING ON THIS ISLAND]

Some scumbag capitalists may refer to it as outdated and crumbling, but they are mere pigdogs who hate to see such great collectivised success. It holds as many people as required, and away fans must go through a simple process involving the submission of thirty-two different documents, a pledge not to commit espionage, and the surrender of all foreign currency. (OOC: this means we’re not letting your fans in. okay, maybe two.)

State-Appointed and Approved Staff

The government of the Vdaran Western Territories has made sure to appoint the best person from the job: Ivanis Grigorelis. Born on Tzounonia in 1972, Ivanis' humble upbringing and his parents' connections to the state allowed him to seamlessly rise through the ranks. Additionally, having been a long-time neighbour of the Minister for Sport, Culture, and Nationhood, it was inevitable that he would be given some form of government position - so why not management, one of the highest honours of them all? Furthermore, Mr. Grigorelis will be assisted by several men in immaculate suits and sunglasses, who we can call [REDACTED], but who you can call 'tactical analysts'. You will find yourself getting rather familiar with these ‘technical analysts’, and we are compelled to inform you about their expertise in classical martial arts.

Disclaimer: Formatting hates me with a passion today, so I will still fix this, but for now I have to post before I go berserk.

The history of the Pyazhnayan national team has been marked by a few ups, a couple of downs and a lot of flatness. The fact they managed to reach the final of two consecutive CAFAs is a sign that the team has a lot of quality, but the fact that they lost both of them also signals that there was more work to be done. Their fortunes in the World Cup qualifiers have been middling at best and WC98 might be Zavrashin's last chance for a result.

HISTORY

Chromatika first entered the World Cup in Cycle 73, going a modest 3-2-7. They made the Cup of Harmony in Cycle 74, and qualified for the first time in Cycle 75, losing in the Round of Sixteen. Chromatika would have their most successful campaign in World Cup 76, making it to the 3rd place Playoff before finishing in fourth place, despite the domestic upheaval in the country. Their first Manager, Franscesca Larriet-Cortes, was martyred at the end of World Cup 75; the political stresses of the job made it so that Lisa Amos, the team's Manager after Franscesca, resigned after World Cup 76.

The team would enjoy continued success from World Cup 77 through World Cup 81, as Silian Parker helped the squad qualify for the World Cup every time, and the team even made it to the Round of Sixteen or beyond three of those times. Even when Chromatika didn't enter World Cup 82, their return to the World Cup in 83 was a success, though both World Cup 83 and 84 saw the Anomalies stymied at the Proper Group Stage - 84 being under new management in Nepharan Konrad Evans.

World Cup 85 was a disaster - the team didn't qualify and didn't even make a deep run in the Cup of Harmony, leading to the sacking of Evans and the appointment of Richard Valens of Krytenia and Tim Landers of Delaclava. The team would qualify in World Cup 86, and 87, host the World Cup in 88, and return to the Proper in 89. However, Chromatika was not making the deep runs that the nation wanted/needed, so they said goodbye to Valens and Landers and looked inward.

Sandra Sybill and Rachel Hellion, key figures during Chromatika's runs in the early days, stepped in. A loss to Nyowani Kitara meant that they were eliminated, but the team turned around and won the 82nd Cup of Harmony. The following cycle, they made it to the Playoffs, where a loss in penalties to Zeta Reka and Hügeltaldom sealed the fate of Sybil and Hellion. Lisa Amos stepped in to lead the team to a respectable Quarterfinal finish in the resulting Cup of Harmony, and Chromatika was left wondering just how far they were away from the glory days.

Lev Repin came in, promising glory - and the Anomalies grabbed it off the cuff, winning their Group to qualify ahead of Ko-oren. Put into a group with Turori, Eura, and Cassadaigua, the Anomalies lost to Turori 3-0 before recovering to win narrowly over Eura and Cassadaigua. They'd fall 1-2 to perennial powerhouses Græntfjall, but they had finally broken back through.

Then, with the World Cup returning to Chromatika, the Anomalies went on the run of a lifetime, making their way to the World Cup Final, beating Zwangzug in the process. They eventually lost the final 3-4 to Banija, but had put themselves back as the #4 team in the world and capable of contending at the biggest stage.

World Cup 94 saw the Anomalies make the Round of Sixteen before losing to Banija once again; then, they cohosted World Cup 95 with Sylestone, only to go 0-2-1 in the Group Stage and not make the Round of Sixteen. World Cup 96 saw a dominant qualifying cycle - only losing once on the final matchday to Abanhfleft - culminate with another Group Stage exit at the hands of Juvencus.

Repin and the Chromatik Football Federation decided to part ways. They then brought in Alina Khabibullina to right the ship - and she led the team straight back to the World Cup Proper. Unfortunately, despite the field being expanded to forty-eight, the Chromatiks lost in the Group Stage once again.

Time is running out on this generation. Making it to the Round of Thirty-Two is a must. This will be a World Cup to decide a lot of things on the history of Chromatik football.

The new Manager of Chromatika. A relatively new find, Khabibullina is a motivator and a technician who likes to try to get the most out of her charges. She took the team to the World Cup, but they couldn't make the Round of Thirty-Two. Making that will be a must going forward.

Zoe has been a constant for thirteen cycles now, and has had to treat everything from sprained ankles to serious injuries after the bus sabotage last cycle. She remains a great asset.

The presence of Arling as the Social Media Coordinator has become as important as ever. She is the primary communications officer for all things regarding the Senior Squad, and one of the confidants of Repin. All questions go through her, and she takes away any and all distractions.

Khabibullina has decided to keep the system of three in the back. Ami Coulibaly has established herself as the starter at Right Centre, the Banijan/Chromatik dual-national cementing herself after the last few tournaments. Known for her friendship with the Tumbran Golden Duo of Trudy Harrison and Stephen Kerr at Chromatik, Coulibaly uses dogged determination and endless motor to frustrate her foes; she is also quite good on her feet and in passing the ball up the pitch. Eileen Jackson-Jones has earned the right to be the first-choice center back, an intense, put-together defender who can handle almost anyone that gets into her zone. She has stamina to go the whole game. Rounding out the starting trio is Cylie Nodis - the most offensive minded center back in Chromatik history - especially since her defensive game has improved with age. With a nose for the ball on every set piece, some deep crosses and the ability to thread the needle using either foot, it's been stated that she should change to a Defensive Midfielder at times. She's set in her ways, though, and insists she should play at fullback. (Un)fortunately, she's proficient enough that nobody can really force her to do anything otherwise, and she's improved enough to be the starter now.

Paisley Paterson continues at the second line. Born to a Chromatik mother and a Licentian father, Paterson grew up in Chromia, and only started football in her late teens. With size, pace, and most of all, a mentality of steel, Paterson has shown that she can be an enforcer on the pitch, not shying away from contact without drawing too many fouls. Her aerial game is still a cause for concern, but the dogged determination with which she pursues every play has made her an instant favorite no matter which coaching staff she works with. Rowan Harry makes up for her height with her aggressiveness and tenacity. She is not someone you want to cross on the pitch, as she has both a short temper and a long memory. Uemura Saburo, on the other hand, has solid fundamentals and the mental edge.

Odwin Muir is an ace defender on set pieces who isn't the best on the attack that is physical, dogged, and determined, while Claudia Lethbridge-Antonio will be the future in the center going forward. Hélène Ataciara provides versatility, being able to play with either foot - rounding out a capable reserve unit.

Chromatika continues to use spectacular wingbacks - pinning their ears back and defend, or sometimes running up the field and add to the attack. Some of them are better at some aspect of that than others. Grayson Fillar is a bullheaded, stubborn, physical right back will will outright impose his will on his opponents. Overshadowed by his younger sister, the electric Baillaire, Grayson was the one who actually chose to finish high school in Chromatika before making the move to 1830 Cathair. Though he says that he's proud of his sister (and he probably is), there is a deeply competitive streak in him that demands that he also make a name for himself atop Chromatika's slew of Fillars. On the pitch, he knows how to use his size to its utmost advantage, almost appearing larger than he is at times. He also understands the importance of momentum and tone, leading to his not being shy to commit a foul if one is needed. He has presence, physicality, and endurance, and has added an offensive edge to his game by providing some pace and some through-balls to the front. Playing for 1923 Esca in Mytanija now, he's aged like fine wine. Alongside him is Edith Fillar, the next coming of Megan Kelly, or the Chromatik winger who's short but can run circles around would-be defenders and take over the game due to where she is on the pitch. She may not be the quickest off the ball, but she has the relentlessness that has been present on many great Chromatik wingers. With the mindset of a drill sergeant who is definitely the strictest on herself, she has over a hundred caps already. She's added playing man-to-man defense to her arsenal of formidable skills, as well as the ability to contribute long-range assists with deadly, precise crosses.

For the players behind these two, any of them can be used at any time - what they provide are all distinct and unique enough to be sought after. Ibayashi Haitou has earned a more important spot after progressing immensely in Quebec and Shingoryeo. He is very good at keeping pace and dropping medium to long crosses. He still struggles with playing through contact, but has the natural aptitude for vision and flow of the match while becoming Mipojoseon's starter. Nemes Mátyás is a sniper through and through who can score at any range - and as his play improves, he'll become even more dangerous. Annemarije Van der Wel is a model citizen who can be an asset late in games with deadly crosses, while Róża Panaś is neither the fastest nor the most creative, but is a good defensive option. Willemieke Janissen op Colmans is an unconventional winger who is more of a support character than a scorer. He's very good at setting up that goal, though.

TACTICAL INFORMATION

Chromatika's 3-4-1-2 is based off of Mytanija's formation.

3-4-1-2 – IN POSSESSION: Chromatika's base formation for World Cup 97 qualification is a 3-4-1-2. This means there will be 3 central defenders, a wing-back on either side, 2 central midfielders, an attacking midfielder and 2 strikers on the pitch at any one time. This does not mean that the team will play in these positions for the whole game, as Chromatiks have adopted the Mytanar philosophy of flexibility in and out of possession, utilizing the fact that until very recently, they ran a 4-3-2-1/4-4-1-1. When Chromatika has the ball the 3-4-1-2 will change into more of a 3-2-5 shape, this is designed to try to create overloads in attacking areas so that the Chromatiks can create two versus one situations where the opposition have to make decisions on who they will engage with.

This 3-2-5 will be achieved firstly by one of the wing-backs (from the starting line-up, this would be right-sided wing-back Grayson Fillar) moving into a central midfield position to play alongside the deeper-lying of the two central midfielders (Kaia Larriet-Cortes, if among the Starting XI). This creates a pairing in central midfield which will be used to help the team build-up, providing passing options both in front of the central defensive three and the 5 players which end-up ahead of them.

That 5 is made-up of the opposite-sided wing-back (in this example it would be left wing-back Edith Fillar), the more advanced central midfielder (Baillaire Fillar), the attacking midfielder (Evin Françine-Miklavivec); and the strikers (usually Xuen-Zhukov and Howard-Dawes). The wing-back has to push on to achieve the 3-2-5 shape, getting into the final third and maintaining the width on their side of the pitch. They will be given some license to get into the penalty area if the ball is on the other side, giving another option for their teammates. The more advanced central midfielder will be tasked with playing inside of the wing-back, in the so-called ‘half-space’, they will look to work with the wing-back to create an overload on their side of the pitch.

The attacking midfielder and the two strikers will interchange fairly freely, though one will always be tasked with pulling wide to ensure that width is maintained on both sides of the attacking ‘5’ with the aim of stretching the opposition’s defense across the width of the pitch. One striker (usually Howard-Dawes in the Starting XI) will drop deep to create space for rotations with the attacking midfielder and the other striker, those two looking to run into and exploit the space vacated by the other striker. These rotations are aimed to shift the opposition defenders around the pitch and create a bit of confusion.

In terms of progressing the play the team will look to move the ball with controlled pace. The team will aim to do this with utmost precision, as is the Chromatik way.

3-4-1-2 – OUT OF POSSESSION: Chromatika's reaction to losing the ball depends on where they actually lose possession on the pitch. Should they lose the ball high-up the pitch, in the opposition’s half, then there will be an instantaneous reaction to press the opponent with the ball to try to win it back quickly high-up the pitch. This is hoped to create chances nearer to the opposition’s goal, effectively using the press as a playmaker. If the opponent breaks through the initial press then Chromatika will look to recover into a 5-3-2 shape as below. Should Chromatika lose the ball nearer to their own goal then they will instantly look to recover into defensive positions to try to make themselves difficult to break down. This shape will be closer to a 5-3-2 than the 3-4-1-2 starting formation.

Both wing-backs will drop deeper, alongside the three central defenders to form the 5. The two central midfielders (Larriet-Cortes and Baillaire Fillar), will drop deep in front of the three central defenders to shield them a little and the attacking midfielder (Evin Françine-Miklavivec), will drop to play in front of them, operating as a bit of a guard dog – either sitting on an opposition deep-lying playmaker to try to stop the ball into them, or by leading a half-pitch press. The two strikers will look to stop the ball going back to the opposition’s central defenders and press them when they are in possession.

Chromatika will also play a variety of other formations should they want to play a little differently, the most likely ones they would change to from the 3-4-1-2 are a 3-5-2 (taking out the attacking midfielder and using three central midfielders); a 4-3-1-2 (pushing the wing-backs back to play as full-backs, removing a central defender and replacing them with a defensive or central midfielder); a 4-2-3-1 (pushing the wing-backs back to play as full-backs, removing a central defender and a striker and then playing a winger on either side); or a narrow 4-4-2 diamond (pushing the wing-backs back to play as full-backs, removing a central defender to play either as a defensive or central midfielder). Chromatika is very versed in the 4-2-3-1 and the 4-4-2, as they've played those before under previous management.

STRATEGY SUMMARY: Khabibullina is a motivator through and through who tries to get the most out of her players; the thought is that the strategy is not bad - they just weren't applying themselves fully, or were going through some things. Hopefully, that'll be enough.

Things you should know about the SRS:

Once upon a time, there was the Imperium of Squornshelous, a militaristic, totalitarian state which took great pride in its football team. Squornshelous entered every World Cup from the 5th edition to the 41st, successfully qualifying all but once, and winning the 31st edition of the tournament. After World Cup 41, however, a civil war erupted which ended with the nation divided in to the democratic Confederacy of Squornshelan Remnant States, and the shrunken but still dangerous Imperium holding onto its island heartland. Both nations disappeared from the international stage for the next 40 World Cup Cycles. The SRS returned to international football for Cycle 81, and was joined by the Imperium during Cycle 84. During Cycle 88, another revolt in the Imperium destabilized the government so much that the nation essentially collapsed, and its constituencies applied for membership in the Confederacy. It was also around this time that Squornshelous/SRS arrived in Atlantian Oceania, having previously competed as an Independent.

Expectation, naturally, has never been higher for the Black-and-Reds as they enter World Cup 98 qualifying ranked in the top ten for the first time in the modern era, and more notably as holders of both the World Cup and Arrosian Regional Championship. The lineup that will attempt to join the exclusive club of nations with successful World Cup title defenses is, at least for the present, much the same as the one that shocked the world one cycle ago, tallying upset after upset en route to the second Squornshelan World Cup title, and the first under the democratic, Confederate government. In the past three cycles under Dudu Madeiros, the Black-and-Reds have won two regional and two international trophies, cementing one of the best periods of sustained excellence in the nation's long history. Accordingly though, now that they've finally proven they can win on the international stage, the bar has been raised for this roster to put up results again while they still have the chance.

Reçueçn Roster & National Information

National Team Information

Ägidius Heissler, previously assistant manager of the ÉNRF, navigated a disappointing and stressful IAC in the last cycle after having the position of head coach thrust upon him following Bonheur Relié's contract ending abruptly. The federation has done little to make his job easier, demanding the most from him, yet all the while openly discussing his replacement. The FNRF failed to find that replacement before the IAC, leading to an awkward tournament where rumors circulated that the team's manager might be changed in the middle of the tournament. It didn't wind up happening, but that's probably mostly just due to FNRF bureaucracy getting in the way. Now the FNRF has said it is determined to find a new head coach before the start of the World Cup--so it looks like Heissler will yet again have to deal with managing a team while the federation discusses his replacement and hovers around like a terrible helicopter parent. Can the "interim manager" get Les Licornes back into the World Cup after his predecessor failed last cycle? I guess we'll see...

If L'Équipe Nationale de Reçueçn de Football is known for anything, it would be its defensive style. This is partly due to the large influence of Reçueçn FC on the team; the most popular domestic club in Reçueçn plays about as defensive a game as you can imagine. This is balanced out to some extent by the players from other teams with more attacking philosophies, but the league as a whole tends towards defense, and it shows in the national team. Furthermore, Gerauld Firaut, the team's #1 goalie, is the best player on the team by a solid margin—without a doubt, Reçueçn's first world-class player. He and his defense form the foundation for the team as a whole.

National Team Logo

The team plays in a 4-3-3 formation, but sometimes the wings drop back, almost making it a 4-5-1. In general, the team's strategy and tactics are solid. However, there has always been some tension between the current manager, Bonheur Relié, who would prefer a more attacking style, and the players, who in general are more comfortable on defense. Relié has never managed to make himself as popular with the team as his predecessor, Jacques Tremblay, who was the founding head coach of the team and is a footballing icon for Reçuecians. Relié's inability to build the same relationship is due only to his lack of charisma, not skill, but does make his job more difficult.

The Reçueçian National Team's mascot is the unicorn; thus another name for the team is "les licornes". The fantastical creature has been a symbol of Reçueçn for almost two millennia and is also the national animal, appearing as the supporters in the national coat of arms.

The team's kit represents the colors of the flag in a quite literal fashion. The jersey was redesigned a long time ago, replacing the first one les licornes ever wore, dating back to the 59th Baptism of Fire. Fans thought the old outfit was ugly, but the current one is now also becoming out of favor as the longer it stick around the more tired people grow of it. It was much more professional than the original, but leaves more to be desired.

Stadium
Reçueçn has only one stadium in which its national team plays, located in the capital city (also named Reçueçn). Never having been given an official title, the national stadium is usually simply referred to as just that: le Stade National. (Reçuecian law requires journalists in the nation to use endonyms even when reporting in English or other non-local languages.) Capacity: 30,000.

Coaching Staff

Ägidius Heissler: Used to play as a left wing for Itrino. After retiring as a player he signed for the National Team as Paraclete, taking a promotion to Assistant Manager in the wake of Tremblay's resignation. Then, after Bonheur Relié was was sacked, he was bumped up to "interim manager". The FNRF has yet to officially confirm him in the role though, and in fact may not do so at all. The players, however, love Heissler, whom they've always had as part of the team in some capacity, and who has always had the players' best interests at heart.

Reçuecian History and Culture

The nation of Reçueçn was created in the first half of the XIV^th century, when Carl Blancpic, Duke of the Duchy of Reçueçn, launched a breakneck military campaign invading and annexing many of his neighbors to the east. Before this time, Reçueçn had been only a city, built on the heights overlooking the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers. These heights had been settled by Carl Blancpic's distant ancestor, Ifheda Rcuecn, near the end of the II^nd century a.d., and had born his name ever since. The area at that time belonged to the Roman Empire, who had established their regional administrative center, Lugdunum, on the other side of the river.

In 197 a.d., a decisive battle was fought near Lugdunum in one of the civil wars for the throne of the empire. The victor, Septimius Severus, razed the city of Lugdunum and destroyed it, stripping from it all imperial privileges in punishment for supporting his rival. This was the end for Lugdunum, but it was the beginning for Reçueçn. Refugees flocked across the river to join the settlement, and the city of Reçueçn grew to become a smallish regional center. Rcuecn's descendants (who changed the spelling to Reçueçn) maintained control over what became the Duchy of Reçueçn for 700 years, until it was inherited by their cousins the Blancpics who reigned for another 300 years.

At the beginning of the XIV^th century, power passed into the hands of Carl Blancpic, who was a megalomaniac and partially insane . Thus he declared his duchy to be a kingdom and singled out weak neighbors who he invaded with audacity. Over an incredibly short period of time beginning in the spring of 1337, he had carved out for himself a sizable dominion.

Carl, who styled himself "Carl III of Reçueçn", was violent, unstable, and petty. He was also wildly unpopular with the populations of the various states he had conquered. Although the central power structure helped the economy of the new Kingdom of Reçueçn to some extent, it did not bring with it all the stability that might have been expected. This was mostly due to the decrees of Carl III, who, among other things, began a campaign to persecute and kill all "heretics" within his new realm. Most historians agree that this was in fact a thinly veiled purge of his political rivals. This and other policies he enacted on his whims finally drove the people into open revolt in the spring of 1352.

Carl managed to hold on to power for a couple years by hiring mercenaries, but in 1354 lost two key battles and was captured by the rebels. By this time, the rebellion was led by feudal lords throughout the country who had sided with the people against their tyrant king. Carl III was executed, and the kingdom dissolved into a mess of tiny, independent feudal holdings.

No sooner had the various states that had been in the Kingdom of Reçueçn won their independence, than infighting broke out among them. The feudal lords squabbled over power and influence, trying vainly to imitate Carl's meteoric rise to power. This new violence, combined with the economic downturn associated with the rebellion and the breakup of the nation, clearly displayed how poorly things were turning out. More sensible minds came to the decision that the solution was to once more unify Reçueçn.

On November 19, 1356, therefore, The Allied States of Reçueçn came into being. The leaders of all the petty states, duchies, bishoprics, free cities, etc., came together and signed what are known as "The Treaties of the Alliance," a document just powerful enough to make Reçueçn a single nation, rather than a group of independent entities. The treaties also established a rough form of democracy, with each state represented (although typically by its aristocracy). Thus Reçueçn lays claim to being one of the oldest democracies in the world.

The treaties defined much of Reçuecian history to come. Provisions were made to establish freedom of religion, in order to avoid another scenario similar to Carl III's persecution of his opponents. The treaties also gave Reçueçn an isolationist bent. The nation had been burned before, and wouldn't soon try to meddle in external affairs, especially when its composite nature made creating a foreign policy so difficult.

Reçueçn, then, has managed to avoid many of the crises of European history. It's darkest moment came when Napoleon invaded, proclaiming himself emperor (although he allowed Reçueçn's government to continue to function under his reign). The allied states have drawn closer together, although cultural differences remain among them; they don't even all speak the same language.

Reçueçian culture has also been shaped by its location, nestled in the center of the Alps. The difficulty of travel among mountain valleys ensured the cultural diversity of the nation and preserved local customs. Although rural communities did center around agriculture—especially dairy production—many Reçuecian were forced by the lack of arable land to find other work. This led to a culture of innovation that continues today: Reçueçn is now known for its luxury products and technological exports. This has additionally led to a focus on science and education. The relatively diverse nature of Reçueçn's culture means that some areas are culturally more time-oriented while others are more task-oriented, but this fusion has given the country a uniqueness, especially in art. Reçueçn, perhaps thanks to its inland, mountainous location, or the fact that it was never a colonial power, has seen little immigration or emigration. Recently, however, the diversity of language spoken in the country has made it attractive to refugees from other areas where those languages are spoken.

Visiting Reçueçn

Reçueçn is a small nation, but it's got a lot to see. If you're visiting for World Cup qualification, you may want to extend your stay to see the sights.

Travelling to and in Reçueçn
Most travelers to Reçueçn will fly into Reçueçn city. As the capital and largest city, it will definitely have the flight connection you need. Genève, the nation's second city, will also accommodate you in this regard, but all the games will be happening in Reçueçn. If you are travelling from a nearby country, arriving by rail is also a possibility, and many more Reçuecian cities have international rail connections than have international airports.

For travel within the country, taking the train is probably the way to go. Car rentals are fairly expensive, and many cities restrict downtown access to pedestrians and public transport. When travelling through the countryside, you will find that autoroutes have high tolls, and smaller roads are typically wind annoyingly through steep mountain terrain. However, there is an extensive rail and tunnel network, and taking the train is fairly cheap between most places in the nation. Bus routes also connect most larger towns. Within cities themselves, public transport is always very high quality and usually very affordable or in some cities, even free. A few bus lines are temporarily free to travel during the tournament, in a government-led effort to promote tourism and encourage visitors to explore the country beyond just the soccer matches.

What to See
Presumably if you're reading this, the main attraction that has brought you to Reçueçn is World Cup qualification. All the games will be played just a short bus ride away from Reçueçn International Airport at the Stade National in Reçueçn's inner suburbs. But if you want to see a bit more of the nation, consider taking a ride up to a cute alpine village and hiking along a mountain ridge to appreciate the amazing views we have to offer. Or take a swim in a mountain lake and cool off in the shadow of the peaks. If you really are looking to ditch the heat, check out the ice tunnels at the Écho glaciers. Or, if you come during the winter, you can hit the slopes—our skiing's the best in the world.

If the mountains aren't for you, consider visiting our world-famous cheese museum - free samples! Or visit the Genève Cathedral if the culture you're looking for isn't bacterial. Genève, Reçueçn, Zimmerich and other cities each have a beautiful downtown historic district worth the walking tour. Check them out if your idea of a good time means wandering through medieval fortifications or strolling down cobbled alleys. Exchanging your money should be no problem: the Reçuecian guilder is very stable and worth just a bit more than the NSD.

Where to Stay, What to Eat
If you are on the search for the perfect hotel for your stay in Reçueçn, worry not. Plenty of all kinds abound in and around each major city, whether you're looking for the four star experience, or just want to save a buck. If you'd rather have the personal, local touch, then we've still got you covered: a quick look online will reveal plenty of family-owned bed & breakfasts, as well as short-term rentals with people trying to make some money off the empty spare room one night or week at a time. Hostels are also very popular in Reçueçn, and are a great way to stay near the city center for a very low cost.

What'll you have for dinner? Reçueçn's food is what will make you want to come back for another visit. We love our cheeses, and our national specialty is raclette, melted cheese scraped over small potatoes, cornichons, and saucisson. Try it at a restaurant where each table is provided with its own small oven so each diner can melt their own. Another local specialty is tartiflette, essentially a casserole of potatoes, onions, and lardon (thick-cut bacon) served with a slab of, you guessed it, more melted cheese cooked right over it.

If rather than in a seat at a fine dining establishment, you find yourself in an alpine pasture hankering for a pique-nique, don't worry. Cheese is great for a basket-lunch too. Bring along a baguette and a saucisson, and you've got yourself a meal.

No meal in Reçueçn is complete without a glass of wine, and the local product is certainly worth the connoisseur's time. Reçuecian wine varies immensely depending on whether you're south, west, or north of the Alps, so try a few varieties and pick your favorite. If you need a pairing for your meal, it just so happens that every single person you meet on the street in the country is a self-proclaimed expert ready with helpful advice. Just don't stop them on their way home for dinner.

Do's and Don't's

Do say "Bonjour" to those you pass in a small town. Don't block the escalator in the metro. Do take your time to enjoy a meal or a conversation in western Reçueçn. Don't be late in eastern Reçueçn. Do greet people with a kiss on each cheek. Don't actually let your lips touch them. Do cheer loudly for your team! Don't go too crazy with the victory party. Do take a selfie with your head on the block at execution square in downtown Reçueçn. Don't miss out on your visit because you're on your phone the whole time. Do rent a bike and pedal around to see the sights. Don't be unprepared to parallel park if you've rented a car. Do make eye contact during a conversation. Don't stare at people. Do be ready to share gossip with perfect strangers. Don't expect people to open up to you right away. Do keep your hands above the table at dinner. Don't yawn during a conversation. Do offer to help your host with cleaning up. Don't ask for seconds until offered. Do speak your mind and be straightforward. Don't bank on too much personal space.

New Era for National Team as Attentions Elsewhere
Andre Verto's side look to navigable group in face of turmoil

The Elymian Football Federation had hoped they wouldn't need to find a replacement for Pau Porras. Still largely popular with the players, with his irascible, optimistic style, fun football and excellent record meant he surely had more than enough credit in the bank to continue with Elmyia. Whilst the record in World Cup qualifying had dipped after two consecutive qualifications, two consecutive Copa Rushmori finals and a first major trophy marked a remarkable era for the team. Sadly, the Juven coach's mind was made up, and after a slightly chastening 3-0 defeat to Tikariot in the final, he made good on his promise to step down.

The EFF had done its due diligence, and the noises he'd been making in the run-up to the final meant they'd had time. The target was obvious, Xanthi Kostis, a well regarded coach anyway, was now working with the top talent in the domestic league and would surely be the stand-out candidate. Then came the biggest scandal in Elmyian footballing industry.

A series of revelations drip fed out across the close season, after cruising to a third Elmyian title in a row, several Hellenic players tested positive for controlled substances know to increase performance and decrease the chances of victory. This would have been damaging enough, but story after story followed with allegations of match fixing and bribes to officials. An investigation followed from the Police Service, with 17 employees ultimately banned from the sport, the club ejected from the league and the owners banned from ever purchasing another club in the country.

The owners, from Corrupt Petrostate, were already controversial in the country. Some would like to imagine this was primarily due to their being the aristocrats of a country profiting from oil wealth through the mass exploitation of indentured labour. In reality, a lot of people objected to what they felt was 'buying the league'. Either way, Kostis, while escaping any greater punishment, was not going to be realistically considered.

This threw the door open to multiple options. Paula Kidd, available having been sacked as Mosfleet Albion's manager was well regarded for her time in the National youth setup, but was considered to lack success as a high enough level. Alfredo Servetto, Italia's coach for 6 years and with an impressive trophy haul was talked to but considered too defensive tactically. Antonia Chizzo was called in, well regarded, flexible and with experience in the national team, but she felt it too early.

Slipping down the options list then and it was the slightly less glitzy appointment of Andre Verto. The 54 year old had toiled for years in Division 2 and what used to be amateur football, spending his career at succession of Mosfleet's less renown clubs. He started in the suburb of Senon as an amateur, eventually making a breakthrough as a workhorse centre-mid for FC Campina, Sporting Transvers and eventually finishing his career at Villemont.

This gave way to a coaching career that lacked momentum for a while, with assistant jobs at Senon and Transvers showing very little of what he would develop into. Moving to the more progressive environment of Chipping Sersbrek seemed to eventually twig something in him at age 43, here he developed his craft as a coach, willing to press at a time when most sides sat deep, and showing an affection for creative players often jettisoned in the second tier. After a spell as caretaker, he was eventually given an opportunity back at Sporting Transvers to take over.

When he did the club were in a bad way. With no promotion/relegation from the second tier the side had finished rock bottom of the league structure 3 seasons running, a stark downturn from years as a yo-yo side. He cleared the deadwood and purchased in players who were willing to run, work hard and learn. 4th place in his first season felt like a return to form, and after adding a bit more finesse he was rewarded with promotion. Here he established Transvers as a top flight side across two excellent seasons, even with his best players leaving. He then did the unthinkable and crossed over to their rival Samita, with their superior finances.

Most pragmatic than Samita's previous coach, he had them performing impressively, albeit without ever hitting the heights in the league they were used to, his bagging of a Super Cup and Island Trophy in two successive seasons give reason to hope his pragmatism may pay off in knockout football. Looking across his record, the EFF saw someone who, whilst not sacrificing the positives of the Porras era, might add a bit of savvy to carry them through the difficult moments.

Naming a squad has been a challenge for qualifying, many Hellenic players remain free agents with the club disbanding and can be expected to be out of sorts. Their reception also remains uncertain with the Elmyian faithful, whilst those who tested for controlled substances escaped any sporting ban, and all claim ignorance, they continue to receive opprobrium. Regardless, players from other sides such as Marina Kuhl, Yianna Moss and Amelia Graves might stand to benefit.

THE TUMBRAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
The Black Eagles

The Tumbran National Football Team is Tumbra's main representative in all association football competitions for national associations. Making its debut at the 87th World Cup Qualifiers, the team currently ranks 2nd in the world. The team is controlled by the Tumbran Football Federation, which is also the governing body of football in Tumbra. Also known as the Black Eagles, or affectionately the Eagles, the team competes in the World Cup and its related competitions. The team also participates in the Campionato Esportiva, also sends teams to the Di Bradini Cup for Under-21s, and the Under-18 World Cup. The team have won the 51st edition of the former tournament and the 13th edition of the latter tournament; which has led to a keen emphasis on bleeding youth into the national team set-up early. The senior national team's best performance, meanwhile, has been with a Final appearance at the 95th edition of the World Cup. With a loyal travelling contingent of supporters known as the Black Army, the Tumbran national team's support will be on display throughout this tournament, with lots of tifos and loud cheers expected throughout matches.

A semi-final run that eventually puttered out against eventual champions Squornshelous saw a somewhat-vaguely defined return to form but an underperformance at the Campionato has meant that there is somewhat of a crisis of confidence within the national team set-up. Add the fact that many of the so-called Golden Generation, which has made two World Cup semifinals, are on the verge of aging out of the national team set-up entirely, and this feels more like a transitional cycle rather than one that the Black Eagles are expected to win.

The Manager
Michael Campbell, formerly of Straton and Tavistock Athletic, was given the job almost as a sacrificial lamb after Tumbra sacked Peter Gabriel ahead of the 95th World Cup cycle; he was always intended to be an interim while the Tumbran Football Federation waited for a highly-rated foreign manager to open up. That, or waited for the Federation to determine if the international football programme was still financially worth it after a disappointing group stage exit in the 94th World Cup. But Campbell — relentlessly referred to as an interim everywhere — pulled through; going unbeaten in the qualifiers and making a miracle run to the Final, after winning an actual coinflip to determine whether Tumbra or Brenecia progressed to the knockout stages. Though he wasn't able to win the World Cup, Campbell has been vested with considerably more resources; including an actual assistant manager (longtime friend and former Straton team-mate, and later manager, Michael Aitken), and plenty of other coaches.

In press conferences, Campbell will always play down Tumbra's chances; they are never the favourites. At most, the game will be evenly matched; he holds an almost superstitious belief that to publicly state that his team is the favourite is to court a near-instantaneous comeuppance. An adherent to the Tumbran school of defensive, counterattacking football, Campbell follows in former Tumbran national team manager Yuan Zilai's footsteps; but crucially, prefers to set-up with two midfielders in a flat three rather than deploying an attacking midfielder. He's been touted as a manager who can go far, but as implied above, Campbell always redirects praise; instead choosing to foster an underdog mentality within his team, and of himself.

Tactical Set-Up
Tumbra will usually set up in a 4-3-3 formation. The alternate formation, particularly when Tumbra deploys an attacking midfielder, is a 4-2-3-1. The team's general strategy is to sit back, soak up attacks, then break on the counter. Four-defender formations are seen as the gospel and orthodoxy in Tumbra; three or five-defender formations haven't really picked up steam in the country, only being resorted to in the midst of play.

In defence, Tumbran orthodoxy is to have a four-player defence; wingbacks in this system are expected to start attacks after the central defenders dispossess marauding attackers. The ideal Tumbran wingback is fast, able to pass, and float into midfield when out of possession to help regain possession; in practical terms, one wingback stays back while one floats into midfield. The central defenders are usually split into two; clean-shorts and dirty-shorts, with one focusing on distribution and the other on dispossession.

The midfield is the crux of Tumbran footballing philosophy, with the defensive midfielder being the most important position on the team. The midfield traditionally has three roles; destroyer, pacesetter and creator. Under Michael Campbell, this usually means a double pivot in midfield comprising of Harrison (a mainstay on the team) playing as the destroyer and one of the other two defensive midfielders playing alongside her; or two of Robertson, Harrington, and Leighton, if a single pivot is utilised. In any case, the more advanced midfielder typically serves as the creator. On very rare occasions where Tumbra seeks to take control of the game for themselves do they play with an outright attacking midfielder; this shift away from the 4-2-3-1 has been the major innovation of the Michael Campbell era so far, and signals a declining reliance on the status of the purely attacking midfielder.

In attack, creative freedom is granted; though history has usually shined its brightest lights on goalscoring wingers. This usually privileges players who cut in on the wing to overload the box, with crosses a secondary option. Crosses may be delivered by either the wingback or the winger; the wingback is preferred. The ideal Tumbran forward is lithe and agile regardless of which side they play on; finishing ability is respected far more than individual flashes of brilliance, though unsurprisingly players with flair are remembered far better than those who aren't.

On a sliding scale between workhorses and technical finesse, Tumbrans as a whole lean towards the former, though obviously with exceptions. Gamesmanship, time-wasting and riling up the opposition are par for the course; but Tumbrans will never directly break any rules. Tumbrans are pretty naff at set-pieces; they prefer scoring from open play.

Association Football/Soccer Culture in the Busoga Islands

To get into sporting culture of the country, you first must get into the country's history.

The Busoga Islands, historically, were largely uninhabited. Then, of course, Shia refugees escaping both ethnic and religious persecution in that country escaped from there, and went to the Islands- which were named after their leader, Ayatollah Busoga. A few hundred years of independence, before eventually being subject to a violent takeover by Banija. They were an integral part of Banija- so when Banija was colonized by Quebec, they were as well. And when Banija became independent in 1906, Busoga was considered an integral part of Banija, and went with it. Over 100 years as part of the independent Kingdom of Banija, despite their ethnic and religious composition being vastly different from the Banijan mainland. But a mismanaged drought durign World Cup 80 Qualifying started a famine, which launched the Busogan War for Independence, known abroad as the Banijan-Equestrian War. With asistance from Equestria and Baker Park, military might from their allies achieved their independence from Banija.

Ebrahim Razav was the country's first President, and President Delbin Kasekende, the current President, is the current President- the second President. IN charge for over 20 years, democratically, of course- 4 time election winner. Former NT goalkeeper for both Banija and Busoga, the athlete turned politico is a popular figure in the country. But this history gives them an inferiority complex, sports wise. Banija, their former masters, and neighbor, excelling across sport, while the Busogans can't seem to get anything done. It created a sporting inferiority complex- one that ends up being self-fulfilling.

That leads us to soccer culture, specifically. Association football culture in the Busoga Islands is interesting. It is the second most popular sport in the country, behind cricket- the country's true national sport. The country has never really been known for its sporting prowress- internationally, Busogan teams, no matter the sport, have not done much more than simply fill out numbers in a tournament. Barely a footnote in somebody else's story. Maybe springing an upset or two- who can forget the Busoga Islands upset win, at AOCAF 64, over Valanora? But no trophies, no appearances in Finals, nothing relevant or sustainable built- until, of course, the NSCF. Now, I know what you're thinking- what the hell does college gridiron have to do with the national soccer team?

But it all connects. NSCF 31, the Islamic University of Busoga shows up foer the first time in 10 seasons- there to fill out numbers, get a payday, get rolled by actually relevant teams, and dip. But the opposite happened- the Islamic University of Busoga took the world by storm. They swept the historic Banijan powerhouses of international college football, going 4-0 against the two Banijan schools. They finished as the top team in the regular season, and were, quite literally, one play away from reaching the NSCF Championship game. A hell of a run- coming from literally nowhere, and getting back. Coming back in NSCF 32, and having similar success- showing they are built for this. They are ranked ahead of the two Banijan schools.

Most importantly, though, it served as the hammer to the inferiority complex. The most immediate consequence is the increased popularity of gridiron in the country- now easily the country's third sport. But beyond that, the question became- why can't Busoga compete abroad in other sports? Why not the world's biggest sport- soccer? They are sober about how things are- this small country, without a top-flight team, is not a WC team. But with an expanded WC, and Busogans finally proving themselves on the world stage in sport, they want to get a national team to do so. With the President of the country also the President of BISA, he then announced a return to World Cup Qualifying- and is investing both the time, and the money, to get it done. Expectations are measured, everyone knows very well that it takes a few cycles to have a legit chance to qualify for the World Cup. But the goals are ambitious- the eldest Kasekende strongly believes that Busogan participation in the Centennial edition of the World Cup is a 'legitimate goal for this country'.

The Domestic Football Situation

The domestic football situation in the Busoga Islands is complicated, to say the least. There are 14 professional Busogan teams in the Banijan soccer pyramid, and they are all at the lower levels- two of them are in Banija's second tier, and 10 of them are in the Busogan National League- aka, the third tier. No teams are in the S-FPL, which is the joint first tier of Banija, Busoga, and Farfadillis- and frankly, no teams are close, with the highest finishing Busogan team in the joint Banijan/Buosgan second tier finishing 9 places away from promotion, in the most recently finished season. The Busoga Islander Soccer Association has been pushng for further development, but of course, the lack of quality has ensured they remain denied a permanent place in the Shango-Fogoa Premier League.

With the lack of first tier teams, the Islanders struggle to get first tier talent up to the Shango-Fogoa Premier League, which is a ceiling on their development. However, with the return of the NT to World Cup Qualifying, for the first time in forever, that is hoping to reinvigorate development of the sport on the island- invest in the clubs, invest in the players, improve quality, and have a 'rising tide lifts all boats' type of moment.

Tactics
Formation: 4-3-3

In attack, Darmen will employ one of two tactics: the first involves the team playing down the flanks while the second is a possession oriented short-range passing style that closely resembles tiki-taka. The later tactic is normally only employed against weaker opponents or when Darmen has a multi-goal lead and involves connecting many passes together to slowly advance the ball towards the opponents 18-yard box. It is not uncommon for 30+ passes to be completed in the sequence, especially against weaker opponents.

Darmen's primary tactic however is a heavy emphasis on flank play, with the wide midfielders (also referred to as flankers in Darmen) being the linchpin of Darmen's attack. Upon gaining possession, Darmen will look to distribute the ball to one of the two wide midfielders as quickly as possible. After receiving the ball, the wide midfielders will look to advance the ball as far down the flanks as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, the forwards and the central midfielders will crash the box, hoping to be on the receiving end of the wide midfielder's cross. The wide midfielder (or sometimes even the fullback) on the opposite flank will linger behind waiting to collect the cross should it overshoot the box. While scoring via headers is the primary goal, a player may also look to score by volleying or half-volleying the ball if they're in open space. Should the first attempt at goal not be collected by the goalkeeper, Darmenis are more than willing to take advantage of the ensuing chaos in the box and poach a goal as well. If the wide midfielder's path forward down the flank is blocked, they are not averse to cutting inside and taking a shot on goal themselves.

Defensively, the defenders have one job... to defend. They rarely venture out of their own half, but if they do it will only be one of the fullbacks (see above). Darmen will employ zonal marking when facing the counter-attack and man marking in all other situations.

Team Personality
The Darmeni team will never argue with the referee. Indeed, if anything needs to be brought to the attention of the referee it will be done by either the Captain or Vice-Captain in a respectful manner (or to the fourth-official by the Manager). With regards to foul/dirty play, the Darmeni team will not provoke, or retaliate against any opposition player. Darmeni's expect each team to keep to itself and deal with its own trouble makers; any opposition player who attempts to prevent a conflict by pushing or pulling a Darmeni away from the scene will be promptly told off, as that is the duty of the Darmeni Captain.

Nonetheless, Darmen will play in a relatively aggressive manner. Tackles will be conducted in a way which ensures the opponent ends up on the ground, but causing injury will be avoided as much as possible. On set pieces, Darmenis will stand their ground and will not be easily pushed around. However, they will not engage in hugging. In fact, if any opposing player tries to push past them, it is not uncommon for the Darmeni player to feign resistance before simply stepping aside and watching as the opposing player stumbles past on their way to ground. This occasionally backfires however, as the referee may mistake the incidence as having been a foul in the box.

With a new regime, comes new thoughts. Whilst Legalite football remains a goal-focused, attack-first style, the formation and responsibilities has shifted a tad, bringing about a more “normal-looking” 3-4-3. Some may prefer to call it a 3-2-2-3, looking at the way it plays on the pitch, but not McNulty. In this formation, the defense plays three across, all serving as more central defenders, but will extend across the entire touchline as needed. The midfield consists of two wing backs, along with two central midfielders focused on possession and transition, with the typical complement of three forwards on hand to create chances early and often. The mentalities remain well-known to those who’ve seen the Legalites play: scrappy, hard-working, annoying to have to get by, but not overly difficult to score on once you’ve broken down the best way through. Look for a lot of pace, and for all of the available substitutions to be used.

What to expect from the Keepers
The McNulty system prefers that the goaltender not just be the playcaller from inside the goal area, but that they be willing to push outward a bit further themselves, acting as more of a sweeper keeper. Reports indicated that while there’s some friction, Bekk City’s keeper, Kawacatoose Swamp Johnson (who prefers to be referred to by his first name) will likely take most of the starts in qualifying, as he has in previous cycles. Kawacatoose has been described previously as tall, outgoing, and dramatic -- all useful traits for a keeper that tends to face a lot of shots. His physical presence has been one of his advantages, though it’s expected he’ll need to up his pace if he’s going to fit in as a sweeper keeper. Emma Pett, the Sien Bay Pirates keeper, will continue as a backup for Toose; however one newcomer has arrived in the form of Johnny Ulyatt. As Plainsview Town’s keeper, Ulyatt’s familiarity with the manager may prove useful in both helping his colleagues execute in the back, and may make him someone McNulty calls on to perform.

What to expect from the Defense
The previously thinned-out back line has returned to a more normal setting, with seven central defenders named to the squad. McNulty will look for her back line to play the ball and start the counter move, and is the spot on the field where the most change is expected. While Jack Farmer returns, the rest of the back line is new. Adrian George and Niamh Murray seem to be the preferred picks, but any of the seven will get a look.

What to expect from the Wing Backs
One could say that the Wing Backs are the unsung heroes of this formation. Their roles typically require them to be back on defense when the opposition has possession, forming more of a 5-2-3 than a 3-4-3; however for the attack to at its’ best, the wings are typically the dynamic crossers, putting the ball in play for the trio of forwards. They don’t score often, and aren’t the first to get credit for a (likley rare) shutout, but their play is the most likely difference between a win and a loss. Faron Hill Adams, who has bounced between being listed as a defender and midfielder for the national team over the past few cycles, is the experiential elder statesman at the young age of 23, and is expected to start on the right. On the left, Derrick Yomkins has stood out as the starter. However, I would expect both Gagan Epsom and Jonathan Kingman to see significant amounts of time on either side; both will likely be in the named substitutes if not on the pitch.

What to expect from the central Midfielders
In the past, the midfield has been called the core competency; under the new regime, it remains so, but the central midfield’s pairing will tell more about if they are able to keep control of the match. Typically, both midfielders will drift anywhere between the penalty areas, with one true box-to-box midfielder playing alongside a possession-focused ball-winning mid. Expect Thomas Toal and AC Sheehy to slot into these roles, respectively, but for at least one to come out before the end of the match.

What to expect from the Forwards
Traditionally, the typical Legalite forward only tracks back into the defensive half when absolutely necessary. This remains true under McNulty’s system, but to a different extent. The main strategy of the three forwards (in order to reach their collective goal, which are, well, goals) is to pile on as many shots on-target as possible, the idea being that continuous chance creation will challenge the keeper to the point that they break down and open the floodgates. To this end, the trio will take on whatever role is needed, to the point that you could see three strikers, two strikers and a false nine, or even two deep-lying forwards if the situation calls for it. As for the personnel, no major changes are expected, with Funderbunk, Tonawanda, and Hirst likely to get the call from the start.

Text description of the kits: The primary team kit consists of a black shirt and shorts, with red socks. The shirt contains a double sash of solid red over solid white, stretching diagonally from the left shoulder to the right hip. Over the shirt-wearer's heart (as well as on the right hemline of the shorts) is the Legalese crest. The player's number appears to the right chest area on the shirt, and on the left leg of the shorts, both in white.

The secondary team kit consists of a red shirt and black shorts, with red socks. The shorts description is identical to the primary kit description, save for the number on the shorts being gold in color. The secondary shirt contains a black sash running from the left shoulder to the right hip; the sash is not solid, appearing as if it was splashed onto the shirt. The shirt has white collars and cuffs, and contains the Legalese crest in the same position as the primary kit shirt; the number is in the same position as the primary, but colored gold.

A new third kit, designed to honor the region (while firmly asserting a national identity). It consists of a multicolored shirt, along with black shorts and red socks. The shirt is mainly purple and green, with a progressing block-like pattern. Over the pattern is a red sash, containing the splash style seen on the secondary kit. The shirt includes black cuffs, and a black/red color.

The keeper kit is a longsleeve royal blue shirt with white cuffs and collars. The shirt has gold dots across it, shrinking in size moving up from the hem to the collar. a black-and-red sash runs diagonally from the right hip to the left shoulder; the sash consists of a series of thin lines, with the upper half of the lines being red, and the latter half black. The Crest and Numbers on the shirt and shorts are the same as seen on the secondary kit.

The crest contained on the primary, secondary, and keeper kits is a nonagon outlined in gold, with a black field, red sash, and white scales. The third kit contains a simplified crest of white scales only.

Manager - Dominik Weismann

Dominik Weismann is the man charged with taking the Goldhorns back into the World Cup qualifiers. Weismann has been a long-time manager in Siovanija & Teusland, spending plenty of years as an assistant at FC Felsenkirchen 1879 in their golden years before steering their cross-town neighbours 1884 Felsenkirchen to a solid position within the Regionalliga Nordkuste. Weismann very much grew under the tutelage of Felsenkirchen’s legendary manager Leonard Wagner, and that specific style was at the forefront of the STFA’s decision making process here. Let’s face it: the Goldhorns have not played international football regularly in nearly a decade, and it is going to be a rough road back to where we once were. That Felsenkirchen mindset of ‘never-say-die’ and a team of fighters is the best possible route, at least in the first few campaigns, of getting back to the top.

Weismann, in addition to his commitment to instilling a hard-working culture in the team, is strongly committed to the 4-3-3 formation. He likes to use full backs who push forward and join in the attack, with distribution short from the keeper and having the centre-backs play the ball out. The two central midfielders usually feature one playmaker and one in a deeper, more defensive role. Up front, the wingers are quick and encouraged to shoot the ball, while the #10 is also encouraged to get forward and shoot where possible in quite an attacking set-up.

Heading into World Cup 98, the Goldhorns are coming off perhaps the biggest success in the nation’s football history - qualifying for World Cup 97 on just their second attempt since the end of isolation, and taking co-hosts Eastfield Lodge all the way to extra time in the Round of 16, after winning the first World Cup knockout match in the country’s history in the Round of 32. It was a memorable performance, from the first moment of the 5-2 win over Delte to open the Finals all the way until those final minutes, heartbreaking as they may have been for the team’s supporters. Now, fresh off of that experience, the Goldhorns are back. Led by forward Einar Hackl, who scored 6 times in that World Cup, and a squad that is a mix of both veteran and younger players, the aim is to make it into the final 48 once again. Does Weismann feel the pressure? “Not particularly. Last time around was incredible, certainly, but we’re a team that’s still growing and are still quite young. The goal for everyone on my staff and everyone pulling on the shirt is to qualify and to do as well as last time, of course, but there are 144 other strong teams saying the same thing.”

There are several top-level keepers here and Dominik Weismann will have quite the decision on his hands in terms of who to start. With Kamil Krziz out of the picture now, the battle between Per Holz and Koloman Bodeker continues. It was Holz who was under the bar for many of the Goldhorns’ key knockout matches at World Cup 97, however, the talent of Bodeker is undeniable and his invaluable experience at Raynor City United could give him the upper hand. Ludwig Gottschall is probably in his final World Cup cycle, expect him to get a few matches in qualifying, while simultaneously with the battle for the #1 shirt is the battle for the #1 shirt of the future. Sepp Kranz and Bogodon Jelenko are two of the best young keepers in the country at the moment, and each man can expect to get his first caps in qualifiers - the beginning of what will, hopefully, turn out to be a debate for years of which one should get more opportunities for the national side.

Lots of turnover at this position, with 4 of the 8 fullbacks on the longlist yet to receive a cap for the Goldhorns. On the left side, the battle is well-known - Schwefel and Metzger are the keys, and it was Schwefel who gained the advantage over Metzger last cycle due to his better season as well as great performances leading up the tournament. Metzger will be determined to give everything in his appearances to change that. Behind them, the kids get a chance with Leon Wimmer and Andrej Berkel both currently the two best young backs in the Superklasse. Each of them uncapped, they will be looking to break into the squad this time around and unseat one of the old guard. On the right side, two international retirements (Jiri Fiser and Matyas Hayek) see more young blood injected into the position - not a single right back on the long list has reached his 24th birthday yet. The Two Rolfs, as some fans know them, did battle last time around for the starting job - and it was Reichenbach from Teussen that won out over his colleague from 1912 Stelburg. Reichenbach offers a bit more speed, while Gellner is probably a bit better defensively. There is so much in common between these two - born in the same month of the same year in the same city - and it will be tough again to pick between them. Mesko and Kovar are both highly rated talents in the Superklasse who will each get a chance to show their skill here.

It’s a very talented group of centre backs for the Goldhorns - but one where the identities of those who will be playing the role in the biggest matches are up for decision. Last time around, it was quite clear that Paul Steinhausl was the undroppable stalwart of the team, usually paired up with either club teammate Arnold Apel or TSV Marzig’s formidable back Silvio Rodl. Now, however, Steinhausl is getting older, and while he’s still a big presence on this team - his performances over the Qualifiers will likely determine if it’s time for the Goldhorns to move in a younger direction. Apel and Rodl lead the way, naturally, with Rodl having the potential to truly be the next leader of the backline after Steinhausl. Beyond the top group, the FC Teussen Stelburg pair of Sanner and Rosler made good impressions last time around and will be hoping to gain more experience here - while Boris Vykukal is an interesting one. It’s not often that the Goldhorns called up an uncapped player over the age of 25, with the team usually liking to stick with those who have grown into the system - but Vykukal’s strong performances for Chernovets have made him impossible to ignore.

One of the most important positions for the Goldhorns in the 4-3-3 formation, and there are plenty of incredibly talented options here. Jesper Porsche remains the first name on the teamsheet for this team, with an incredible record throughout his Goldhorns career. The dynamic midfielder is now on the other side of 30, but he remains the dominant face of the team and will go down as one of the the best-ever players in national memory. In his advanced playmaker role, there are a few options behind him, namely Hans Gruber and Egon von Stein. It was von Stein who had the advantage last time around, thanks to a Golden Ball season with 1912 Stelburg - but he had a rough go in the year after that, and Gruber has played well enough to demand more of a look. Von Stein, capped 10 times, will be looking to regain his form internationally and keep his spot in the Goldhorns picture.

In the midfield destroyer role, there is certainly much more debate over this position than in previous years. Damir Prekmurje has had the position locked down since the Goldhorns’ returned from isolation, the big, brutal Metropola midfielder being quite capable of delivering both a hard tackle and also a solid pass. He hasn’t dropped off at all, but his position is no longer unchallenged - Sandro Lorenz has been brilliant since his move to Valanora, for example. However, this could be the tournament of Mats Winter. Ever since his breakthrough at TSV Marzig he’s been absolutely brilliant, confident in and out of possession and even dropping into the backline sometimes if necessary. He fits into the tactical structure quite well and in all 4 appearances so far has given a good account of himself. He’ll get chances in this tournament, and if he runs with them it could be his name joining many of his Marzig teammates in the first XI. Josef Kosch-Kovarik, fresh off a move home to Marzig as well, isn’t quite a destroyer and is an interesting tactical option for the Goldhorns - he plays more as a regista, and is usually deployed in games where the Goldhorns expect to dominate possession.

Then there’s the #10 role - and it’s likely that there is one man who is going to dominate in this position throughout the tournament. One of many breakout stars of World Cup 97 for the Goldhorns was Xôrgé Lé Méjî, the St. Jakob-born son of Rulandean refugees, who took the nation by storm with his incredible performances in the last half of qualifying and the Finals themselves. By the time the knockout stages came, he was virtually undroppable, and it earned him a move from boyhood club Rulandea Karlsbrunnen to 1912 Stelburg. There, he became even more of a dynamo and is a real goal-scoring threat in the shadow striker role. Dieter Rosberg and August von Teufelsberg are more traditional, playmaking #10s, who certainly have a role in some moments - but Lé Méjî seems destined to be a legend in this position.

An incredibly talented roster of wingers here - let’s start on the left side. Two young Siovanijans dominate the position for the Goldhorns, and the team are in good hands as long as these two are firing. Veljko Vadimic has been a star since the moment he pulled on the Goldhorns’ shirt in the Di Bradini Cup. He’s powerful, dynamic, fast - possessing all the qualities of someone who can take over the game and dominate, and has done so on several occasions for his country at both the senior and junior level. Dusan Korlikov has really turned into a star for Zvezda Vlaikograd, too, and is an excellent goalscorer from the wing for his club. Josef Weber has been dynamic for FC Teussen Stelburg in the last few years, with a great eye for a pass and when he gets the ball around the box, he makes you feel that it’s inevitable his team will do something magical. Jochen Koegel has drifted into a more central role at Felsenkirchen in the last few years - but don’t be fooled by that, as he’s a winger with great pace down the touchline.

On the right side, meanwhile, Aleksander Kosch-Kovarik was absolutely incredible for the Goldhorns in World Cup 97 Qualifying - with 9 goals in the campaign, including 2 goals at the World Cup Finals and 4 goals in the final 4 fixtures of Qualifying as the Goldhorns reached the World Cup. The number #11 shirt, traditionally for the Goldhorns’ top right winger, will go his way. Behind him, a pair of younger players and one debutant at the age of 30 awaits - with the interesting fact in common that all 3 have played for FC Teussen Stelburg at some point in their careers. Reto Zschokke was perhaps too young to make a big impact last time around, especially with ‘AKK’ running the show - but he’s the main back-up this time around, and will be looking to convert those opportunities into a real challenge for the top spot. Steffen Berlin has had several solid years in Pasarga, and should have a good chance to build on his cap totals in this tournament. Thomas Schalle, in his younger days, was once thought of as the next Gustaf Liechtenstein, both for FC Teussen and the national team. It never quite panned out that way, perhaps one would argue he never really got the chance due to isolation. Now, however, at 30, he finally gets the chance to pull on the national team shirt - and it is certainly a deserved one. Finally, we have Marjan Trstenjek - the winger fresh of a dominant debut season for FK Metropola Borograd who can play on both sides of the pitch, and should expect plenty of playing time this time around .

If there was one man, one face, that will always be associated with the magic of World Cup 97 in Siovanija & Teusland - it’s Einar Hackl. The young TSV Marzig forward, over the course of 18 appearances in qualifiers and the Finals, went from ‘he’ll be a star one day’ to ‘the best forward in the Goldhorns’ World Cup history.’ Yes, it’s true, he broke Michael Ribbeck’s record for goals in the World Cup Finals with 6, and in the first match against Delte scored the only hat-trick ever scored by a Goldhorns player at the World Cup. It was a remarkable tournament, and he followed it up by going home and leading TSV Marzig to a first national title in over 50 years, scoring plenty more en route. He’s arguably the biggest star in the country at the moment, and is still so young that he still has so much growth to do. Now, however, there’s extra expectation on his shoulders - with a league title under his belt at home, and a dominant record internationally to live up to in World Cup 98 Qualifiers. If Hackl can keep up those performances under pressure, it’s going to be the next chapter of a very special story. Behind hm are a pair of veteran forwards - Burger and Zak, who both have done a good job over the years for the Goldhorns. Zak was an important piece in the Round of 16 match with Eastfield Lodge, getting a goal back for the Goldhorns, and fresh off a move to Valanora he should be eager to impress in his appearances. Uwe Seidl and Ben Bing are two younger forwards hoping to break through at this tournament, while Gregor Bischoffshausen has been involved in the national set-up in the past despite never actually being capped - expect that to change for the FC St. Jakob forward this time around.

A steady and calming presence in goal, Suzutsuki is a physically imposing goalkeeper who breaks the mould of the conventional Riennese goalkeeper — instead of playing as an aggressive sweeper keeper, she prefers to remain close to her goal, trusting in her keen reflexes, instinctive positioning, and shot-stopping ability to prevent the opposition from scoring. While in possession of the ball, Suzutsuki does not take unnecessary risks unlike some modern keepers; she tends to distribute quickly into her defenders and midfielders, and when under pressure, is not averse to putting the odd agricultural clearance into touch. Her imposing frame allows her to command her own area well, and she often takes on the responsibility of catching or punching balls delivered into her area instead of leaving her defenders to sweep up the danger. Her proactive approach to goalkeeping, especially in her own six-yard box, allows her defenders the peace of mind to focus on tracking opposition runners, safe in the knowledge that she will be there to take care of dangerous crosses floated into the area.

Kamikata is an aggressive sweeper keeper who is not afraid to help out her defenders whenever the team are caught short in possession. She possesses the requisite pace and technical ability to thrive in a Riena tactical setup that can place significant demands on the goalkeeper's footwork. Her game revolves around sweeping up through balls and shutting down opposition counterattacks using her anticipation and speed off her line, allowing the team to adopt a higher defensive line than would otherwise be possible, and initiating attacking moves with accurate long range distribution, bypassing high pressing manoeuvres by the opposition. The high risk, high reward nature of her play style means that Kamikata is more susceptible to committing high-profile errors leading to goals. Her particular skillset means she is more likely to see the pitch in matches where Riena are expected to dominate possession, typically against lower-ranked sides favouring a counterattacking style.

A well-travelled veteran goalkeeper approaching the prime of her career, Joumae serves as an experienced pair of hands that can be relied upon to deputise whenever the need arises. A jack of all trades but master of none, she is about equally as good at handling as she is with the ball at her feet, without being particularly outstanding in either department. Her role is to serve as a capable backup option for the other two keepers in the squad, and she will expect to spend the majority of her time on the bench unless exceptional circumstances arise.

Overview
Riena will tend to set up in a highly fluid 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formation, but they are also adept at playing 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 when the situation necessitates it, primarily against technically superior opposition in which Riena are expected to have less of the ball. The team can and will rapidly transition between different formations when necessary, and Riena's players will, in general, be given freedom to roam from their assigned position as well as exchange positions with other players. The team tends to play in a 3-2-5 formation when in possession, with one of the full-backs inverting into midfield alongside the holding midfielder while the other full-back bombs forward, and the central midfielder pushing forward to join the attack — out of possession, the formation resembles a 4-5-1, with the two wingers dropping into wide midfield to provide defensive cover.

The team's physical shortcomings in terms of height and jumping reach means they will tend to play the ball short on the ground rather than looking to go long when in possession — a notable exception is in the final third, where the comparatively more physical forwards provide a useful focal point for crosses. In attack, the team will look to move the ball vertically at speed, but will also be content to patiently probe the opposition defence if there are no immediate openings. Riena is particularly reliant on their wingers in attack, and if the opposition manages to stifle Riena's wing play, they will inevitably be neutered as an attacking threat. In defence, Riena uses a high defensive line and will try to make use of offside traps. Zonal marking is preferred at corners and free kicks.

Stadia (only if applicable)
The Riena national team play their football matches at the Wavelet Arena, in the capital city of Nagato. The pitch dimensions are short, but wide, by multiversal standards for football pitches, facilitating wider play on the flanks. The pitch itself is usually well-watered and slick, allowing the ball to travel at speed across the natural grass surface. For teams who prefer a spot of beach football, Riena's original national sport, Riena maintains the Radiant Sands Arena, also in Nagato, with the same pitch dimensions as the Wavelet Arena, but with a sand surface instead. Riena will usually default to the Wavelet Arena, but opponents are free to specify a stadium preference if they wish to do so.

Brief National Team History
The Kadongo Kamu have played in exactly 831 games, as of the end of ARC 3. It is the 25th all-time World Cup cycle for Banija. We have entered in Qualifying for 22 separate campaigns (WCQ73-77, WCQ79-80, WCQ82, and WCQ84-97), hosted two other World Cups (81 and 83), and will enter into Qualifyig for the 23rd time for World Cup 98. We have also participated in Baptism of Fire 60, and been a participant in four different Cup of Harmonies(CoH 66, CoH 67, CoH 71, and CoH 81). In four Cups of Harmony, Banija has only once moved past the group stage, in CoH 81, and they promptly fell on penalties in the Round of 16. In their lone Baptism of Fire, they earned a lone point.

After not competing at all during the World Cup 78 Cycle due to the RBSA's bankruptcy, they re-entered the world of international football in World Cup 79 cycle. A shocking World Cup 79 Qualification campaign saw them on the brink of qualifying, but the team simply ran out of gas and lost 4 of their final 5 matches to not make it to Ceni/Drawkland. Since then, the U21 team got 3rd place at the 42nd Di Bradini Cup, and the national team advanced to the quarterfinals of AOCAF LV, AOCAF LVI, and AOCAF LVII, establishing themselves as a strong regional side, falling to the eventual champs in the latter two tournaments. They stunningly qualified for World Cup 80, after starting poorly by losing 5 of their first 9, to going unbeaten in the second half of qualifying, where they won 7 of those games. In the World Cup 80 Qualification playoffs, a 3-0 first leg victory in Montreal, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, powered the team through to their first ever appearance in the World Cup Finals, advancing to sport's pre-eminent competition 5-3 on aggregate over Mercedini. While a pair of one goal losses saw them eliminated after two games, they earned their first ever victory at the World Cup Finals in a 2-0 win over New Gazi in their final group stage game. As they hosted World Cup 81, they went directly to the tournament, and went to their first ever knockout stages, winning Group A before falling, 1-1(2-1 AET) to Turori in the Round of 16. They cruised to qualification in World Cup 82, maintaining a top two spot in their World Cup Qualification group behind Brenecia for the entirety of the World Cup 82 Qualification campaign, getting to the tournament with relative ease before bowing out in the group stages.

The World Cup 83 cycle was their strongest yet. Starting with AOCAF LVIII on home soil, co-hosted with the Commonwealth of Baker Park, the Kadongo Kamu won 6 consecutive matches to open the tournament, taking their winning streak all the way to the final. Unfortunately, they were felled, 4-2, at home to their archrivals, the Equestrian States. Co-hosting World Cup 83 as well, the Banijans made a miraclous run at the World Cup, upending 5th ranked South Covelllo on penalties, and defeating the then two-time defending world champions Vilita in the quarterfinals, before falling, 3-2, at the national stadium to Starblaydia. They added to the trophy case, however, earning a bronze medal after defeating Cassadaigua in the 3rd place playoff game.

The World Cup 84 cycle, the first with real title expectations for the Banijans, was a disappointment in the regionals, as we fell 1-0 to Ko-oren in the AOCAF Round of 16, although we advanced to the quarterfinals of World Cup 84 before dropping to Eura in extra time. The World Cup 85 cycle seems to be a promise of hope for the Banijans. Although AOCAF LX was a rough tournament for the Banijans, it was surrounded by two excellent tournament performances for the Banijans. We won the U21 World Cup(DBC 47), and are just coming off earning our first ever senior-level trophy, by winning the 8th Eagle's Cup to be admitted as a full, permanent member of the Eagle's Club right before the beginning of World Cup Qualifying. Following that, the Banijans dominated World Cup 85 Qualifying, going wire-to-wire as the first place team in their World Cup Qualifying group, as well as earning more points in World Cup Qualifying(67) than any other team did throughout the entire campaign. Those strong performances both in the Eagle's Cup and World Cup Qualifying have caused fans to put an up and down AOCAF behind them, and heighten the standard for World Cup 85. While they escaped the group stages with four points, strong wins over Vilita and Zwangzug in the knockouts put them on course for a medal, as they eventually beat allies Baker Park in the bronze medal match, after falling 3-2 to the eventual champions Free Republics in the semifinal.

After a return to the AOCAF LXI Quarterfinals, their first quarterfinal appearance in the last 3 editions of the regional championships, they fell to Chromatika on penalties. The World Cup 86 Qualification campaign went rather swimmingly- the national team went a perfect 18-0-0 in World Cup Qualifying, the first time that had happened in well over 10 cycles. The multiverse's #1 ranked squad was brimming with confidence, the two-time bronze medalists entering World Cup 86 trying to win the biggest trophy in all of sports for the first time.

Marcus Waters has always preached the following- "you've got to win at home before you can win the World Cup." It's always meant you've got to win in Atlantian Oceania before you can expect to win the World Cup. And while we've never won the AOCAFs, our group was all Atlantian Oceania sides- Ko-oren, Chromatika, and Mriin. We finished in first place with a 1-0 win over Ko-oren, a 2-2 draw against Chromatika, and a 0-0 draw against Mriin being enough to earn 5 points. Then, we faced a gauntlet of former World champions. A 1-0 win over them put us in our fourth consecutive World Cup Quarterfinal, against 5 time World champions Valanora. A thrilling 4-3 win put us in the semifinal, again facing a GSW rival- World Cup 84 winners Farfadillis. In one of the wildest World Cup semifinals ever played, Banija came out on top 7-6, with a stoppage time winner to put them in the Final against the World Cup 85 winners Nephara. It was a true game of the century- neither team had lost a competitive match since the start of World Cup Qualifying, neither losing during Qualifying or the Finals. And in that thriller, it would be the Banijans who would win, taking a lead and holding onto it, winning by 3 goals to 2 against Nephara to lift the trophy and declare themselves World Cup Champions.

The ensuing AOCAF was strong, but not as strong as they wanted it to be. After starting slowly and losing their opening two games, they finished well done the stretch of group play, and even won a pair of knockout stage games before eventually falling to the champions, Baker Park, in the Semifinals. The Banijans redeemed themselves by earning a bronze medal against Sarzonia. The team took a B squad to Eagle's Cup IX, but a strong performance there landed them a silver medal, losing in the final to Valanora. World Cup 87 did not go the way they expected, getting eliminated in the group stages for the first time since World Cup 82. But we recovered in the World Cup 88 cycle. While a quarterfinal elimination at both Eagle's Cup X and AOCAF LXIII were not great, we were unbeaten in World Cup 88 Qualifying, and reached the World Cup 88 Semifinals, eliminating the defending champions Nephara and falling to the eventual champions Turori along the way. We used that momentum of the semfiinal run to finally earn a regional title, as on our 10th try, we finally won the AOCAFs, defeating Hapilopper in the semifinals and Valanora in the Final, winning both matches via penalty kick shootouts.

That regional title meant little in World Cup Qualifying, however, as Pemecutan and Zwangzug both pipped past Banija to automatically qualify for the World Cup, and left Banija in the dust, gasping for air. That called for a reset from the RSBA, which led to Marcus Waters resigning and Pam Scott be hired. While neither the Cup of Harmony nor the AOCAFs went particularly well, Pam Scott's laser focus on qualifying for the World Cup was a success, as the team not only went to World Cup 90, but showed up in style, winning a pair of penalty shootouts, before falling to the eventual winners, The Holy Empire, on PKs, in the semifinals. They still beat Valanora in the third place match, 2-1, to earn their third overall bronze medal. To reset things for World Cup 91, Banija easily won our qualification group, but flopped on our face in the Finals- losing our last two group stage matches after opening the tournament with 3 points, and promptly falling out at the group stages.

Pam Scott changed the mood entirely following, however, as the Banijans surprised many by winning AOCAF 67, including eliminating tournament favorites, Valanora, on home soil. The team built on that, in what was one of their best cycles ever- after going unbeaten in Qualifying (17 wins and 3 draws, with no losses), they went to the World Cup with confidence. After winning their group with ease, 7 points, they made it all the way to their Second ever World Cup Final, at World Cup 92. Wins over Squidroidia and world number ones Turori followed in the knockout stages, followed by a PK shootout victory over Valanora. But in the World Cup 92 Final, they fell at the final hurdle, as Zwangzug lifted the sport's ultimate trophy. While they could not retain their regional title, losing to the host nations, Valanora, in the AOCAF 68 Final, the lessons learned were paramount. They reached the World Cup and turned on another gear, earning their second ever World Cup title after defeating Chromatika, 4-3, in the World Cup 93 Final.

After they fell in the semifinals of AOCAF 69, the question was- could Banija repeat on the world stage? And the answer, undoubtedly, was yes. In sensational fasion, the Banijans earned their third ever World Cup title in a title defense- going a combined 25-0-2(W-L-D) across Qualifying and the World Cup Finals combined to earn a championship at World Cup 94. And they maintained the form at the AOCAFs- turning down worthy challenger after worthy challenger to do something they have never done before- be regional and world champions at the same time.

Unfortunately, the chase for the threepeat died miserably- World Cup 95 was a nightmarish campaign. The Qualifying campaign barely got off the ground, and it never really went anywhere- although we qualified, it was only via a last minute decider via a playoff- not what a team looking to win a World Cup title is looking to do. And the poor form carried over when it counted most, as it resulted in a group stage knockout for Banija. But that was not a one-off- it started a downturn for the Banijans. A disappointing result at the inauguaral ARC, followed by failing to qualify for World Cup 96, has put a lot of pressure on this team for the last ARCs. The old guard had their last chance and disapppointed- and ergo, there was a top to bottom cleaning of the house. 12 players from the last roster retired, as well as the manager- and so, with George Wangolo taking the reigns as NT manager, it is a new era for the Kadongo Kamu.

The first Banijan manager in 24 cycles to get the full-time job, he had a successful first cycle. There were plenty of questions, as he turned over half the roster and Banija barely whimpered in World Cup 96. But while starting a little rocky, Banija were firing on all cylinders by around the halfway mark- qualifying directly for the World Cup, and ensuring an emphatic win over the Pot 1 side as well. The actual Finals were a stunning success- Banija not only winning their group with 7 points, but advancing past both the Round of 32 and Round of 16, before falling eventually in the Quarterfinals to Tumbra. The run was life-giving, as there is hope that, in the near-term future, this is a squad that can compete for the biggest trophies.

Unfortunately, Wangolo did not built upon this, getting smoked out of the regional tournament, ARC 3- Banija's first ever elimination in the group stages from a regional tournament. Stunning- they had advanced to the KO stages of the regional tournament 19 straight times(United Valhaven once, AOCAFs 16 times out 16, and ARC 1 and 2). A real shocker- they won their first game 4-1, and then lost three in succession to be dumped out of the tournament in the Squornshelan Confederacy. A real shock- what should have been a feel good moment has quickly turned the mood around the NT sour. The RBSA expressed their confidence in Wangolo, but this is a country that takes the regional tourney seriously- so he'll need to get off to a strong start in World Cup Qualifying to keep the pressure off.

1. Layvin Son-Saka

The most hyped prospect, in this sport anyways, is Gitonga Kahara for Banija. Those who are old enough to remember the hype coming out of DBC 42- well, you can say that he lived up to it, having a storybook ending for his career- his last game for Banija, captaining our country to our first ever World Cup title. Son-Saka has every bit the hype- and some say even more talent. "Gitonga Kahara will always hold a special place in the hearts of Banijans- but the next great winger is here, and Son-Saka has the potential to not be equalled by anybody."

Think of the exploits he's had for St. John's Arsenal as a teenager. Scoring the title-winning goal to lead St. John's Arsenal to their first Q-League title in 28 years, he's the main man in one of the biggest leagues in club football. And now, starring for his country too. He probably should have a WC title and been on the WC94 team- but Pam Scott opted to bring on her veteran, Sarafina Ikpeazu, for one last ride. Can't argue with those results, of course. But it's his team now. He got onto the team, got the #7 jersey and the starting job right away, and even has a regional title to show for it, being a key starter on Banija's AOCAF 70 winning team- the final AOCAF.

Of course, while he has been a bright spot, the team has gone quite far downhill since then. Widely recognized as the team's best player, he's been given the armband as the captain for the Kadongo Kamu not only this time around, but for the long-term, at just 24 years old. He's gladly taken on that responsibility, and despite there being senior players ahead of him, he will wear the armband for a decade+. He strong believes that he will compete for the biggest possible trophies for Banija, and that their brightest days are ahead- as opposed to behind. He's now been through the ups and downs- the joys of a shockingly surprising run to the quarterfinals of World Cup 97, and the lows of a brutal, and equally shocking, group stage elimination at ARC 3. Can he help bring the squad together so they can sail through Qualifying and make another deep run here at World Cup 98?

The marauding left back garnered a lot of attention as part of Banija's World Cup winning squad, playing well as a starter in the World Cup Final. When he was 22 years old, the talented left back wrestled the permanent NT role from Sohna Kelley, and is one of the brightest players of the current generation. Coming up through the ranks at Kitara AA, he's off to Herzegovina City in Banija so he can experience the pressures of a title race. Originally trying to stay there for a season, he has liked the place, and inked a long-term contract to spend the majority of his prime years in Banija's oldest city.

Due to his extensive experience with the NT, he's the vice-captain- and, of course, a crucial player on the team. He's been an important contributor for the NT's greatest moments, and he is here trying to bring the team back to its heights. He is known for his relentless positivity, and his strong belief that Banija will get back to the top of the sport.

A Brief History of Obaman Football

Football as a sport is prohibited in West Barack and East Obama, along with other team sports such as cricket, rugby and paintball. This is because the prevalence of team sports has a strong correlation to organised crime, violence and political dissidents, so all attempts at forming groups are prohibited. However, West Barack and East Obama has established an official national football team to help promote Obaman values on the international stage.

The West Barack and East Obama National Football Team are finally World Cup powerhouses by all definitions of the term, having qualified for the World Cup knockouts in the previous edition (nevermind that it was assisted by the expansion of the cup to 48 teams and ended in a first round elimination to TJUN-ia). Now, West Barack and East Obama are a #1 seed in qualification for the first time in their history, where they will be hoping to avoid defeats against Elmyia and Indusse to qualify for a fourth straight World Cup.

Now, they're putting their persuasive skills and tactical knowledge to the real test by continuing their role as the coaching staff of the West Barack and East Obama national team for the World Cup. Rumours that they were forced to take the job so that the government can distract them away from practicing law to better suppress dissidents are still false.

The Players

The players of the football team have been selected based on a variety of factors. The team that has been selected is the one that will maximise winning in competitions whilst minimising the possibility of bonds and teamwork being formed.

Goalkeeper: Dwayne Obama, 39

Captain Dwayne Obama is a fighter pilot for the Glorious Obama Air Forces. Known as 'Dwayne, Destroyer of Planes', Obama has taken down more enemy aircraft and blown up more secessionist state hospitals than can be counted. His reflexes and quick thinking helps him to get out of sticky situations, and his incredible muscles from intensive training means he can stop a powerful ball with just his pinky. The perfect goalkeeper candidate.

Left Centre Back: Nossu Obamadamus, 26

Following the retirement of long-time captain and multi-sport legend Trent Vobama, newcomer Nossu Obamadamus had some big shoes to fill. But that's just what he does, as the New Barack City cobbler is one of the best shoe-repairers in the world. Having a scarily intricate knowledge of feet and foot sizes, Obamadamus has legendary football IQ which allows him to predict where opponents will run to or land, allowing him to intercept balls in team and time tackles perfectly. He's also agreed to collaborate with Fred Olibama on the kit and shoes duty with his expertise in diamond-encrusted spikes. Who said defending can't be flashy?

Centre Back: Barack Denovitz, 32

A feared mob enforcer in downtown New Barack City, the Obamafinakis brothers convinced the Obaman courts to let Denovitz out for the competition, and if he succeeds could earn 10 years off his 150 year sentence (with hard labour). The definition of a hard man, he doesn't tackle, he just scares them away. Suspended on all of his debuts and he'd do it all over again.

Right Centre Back: Bark Obamallama, 34

Door-to-door llama salesman Bark Obamallama has really thick skin. You'll need it to if your day was spent dodging llama spit and verbal abuse from disinterested buyers. Described as being devoid of any emotions, Obamallama will have no second thoughts about ending that opponent's career with a devastating (but legal) slide tackle.

Left Wide Midfielder: Jenny Barracki, 30

Being a professional sprinter, Jenny Barracki is the fastest woman alive. In West Barack and East Obama. She can outrun most of her opponents down the wing, delivering crosses to waiting strikers. Also, she's great at fielding in cricket. Is there anything this girlboss can't do?

Left Central Midfielder: Harvey Chobamya, 31

Harvey Chobamya is not your average gym bro. He spends all of his days and nights on the treadmill at Anytime Obama in New Barack City, as well as doing all of the leg and feet exercises. The strongest lower body in the whole of the nation, he can send balls out of the stadium with just a slight tap. Leg day skips this guy.

Central Midfielder: Wolfgang Obamadeus-Mozart, 27

Better known by his pseudonym "DJ Momo" of the rap duo "Momo and the Obamasaurus", Obamadeus-Mozart has very unpredictable movement patterns to match his crazy beats. He can bamboozle, flabbergast and dumbfound any of his opponents to get the ball from one end of the pitch to the other. His rythmnic playing is also pretty nice to watch.

Right Central Midfielder: Charles Obama, 31 (captain)

Royal Butler to The One and Only Barack Horatio Obama, Charles Obama is also a very skilled footballer. A holding midfielder, there's no room for nonsense when this guy's on the pitch. His commanding presence and knack for providing service to his fellow players will come into handy. The captain of the team following the retirement of Trent Vobama, the venerable Obama will now have the challenge of leading his ragtag group of misfits to glory.

Right Wide Midfielder: Brett Pogama, 33

Brett Pogama has a lot of sports experience, participating in one of the most popular sports in the country (since team sports were banned) in greyhound racing. He plays the role of the rabbit, where he has to run as fast as he can to escape a pack of vicious greyhounds. Most of the time he gets out with only a flesh wound or two, showcasing his excellence for evading opponents to bring a ball into the box.

Left Centre Forward: Lily Chobamya, 22

Sister to Harvey Chobamya, Lily is good at free kicks and penalties. Inbetween her courses at Frederick Obamatown National Health University, she practices her set pieces, which aren't technically illegal as there's only one player playing. She can't do much else, but if you foul someone, say bye bye to your fragile lead.

Right Centre Forward: Fred Olibama, 34

Fred Olibama is one powerful forward. He is a cobbler by day, but in his spare time makes some of the best sports shoes known to man. Being both the striker and the kit guy for the team, his experience in bring in the shoes of a footballer will definitely be a big help to the team.

With a seating capacity of 500, Fort Obama Supermax is currently the largest football stadium in the nation. Converted from a parcel of marsh (mixed in with sewage from the nearby Fort Obama Supermax prison), the stadium is surrounded by ten metre high reinforced concrete walls with barbed wire. Snipers at the towers surrounding the prison will also have additional duties to ensure that no one else gets any funny ideas and tries to break the team sports rule. Of course, this great sense of security will be great for travelling fans, and politicians who will be the only Obamen allowed to attend the matches there. The changing rooms are highly secure with locker doors recycled from scrapped cell doors from the prison, so players' valuables are untouchable.

The Pentagram Underworld, Jakartington WB, West Barack

With a seating capacity of just 100, the Pentagram Underworld may seem small but it is a technological marvel. Built underneath the military HQ of West Barack and East Obama, The Pentagram, the Underworld is highly secure as only those with special clearance will be allowed anywhere near the building. The entire stadium is air conditioned, and the artificial pitch is just sublime. Large lamps illuminate the place so that players and attendees can see what's going on, and there's also a selection of fast food stands from inside the Pentagram in case anyone gets peckish. Of course, travelling fans will need to be vetted and examined for a minimum of 48 days before being declared secure enough to enter. They will also be given a special serum to help them forget everything except the match after it takes place, so be sure to account for these in your plans if you want to attend a match!

TEAM HISTORY
At long last, the Elite Eleven have been catapulted into the sun, far far away from the Kick Corps. Now, a "real" form of the Kick Corps is back. There's bound to be some growing pains, but all of these players are elite athletes who've been plying their trade in the DLK and abroad for the past few years. Now that the national team is back to normal, they finally have a chance to don the black and red and compete for their nation. A few familiar faces, freshened by the gift of immortality, have returned. Due to her familiarity with Corps play (and no small amount of "aggressive persuasion"), former Corps player/immortal warrior/co-founder of Drawkland/elf Ellzidan will serve as the manager. Her job was in question, until she managed the Corps to their third World Cup knockout appearance in history. She followed that up with two straight missed qualifications and was promptly shown the door. This is the second cycle with the new manager, Fran Wells.
Drawkian soccer, and indeed, sporting in general, is mostly offensive-minded. This is reflected in the style indicator and in the formation. Drawkian soccer has not really been exposed to outside influences, and thus may look or feel strange to those used to "normal" football. Nevertheless, the players are still good at what they do, and prize in an enduring game, moving the ball around nearly constantly and keeping energy going, aiming to tire out the opposing team. Of course, Drawkians aren't humans, but you can read about that elsewhere. Drawkian Soccer is a female-only sport. This is because Gridiron Football is all-male, and the other two major sports, Baseball and Basketball, are mixed-gender. If there's anything a Drawkian loves, it's even formats and symmetric paradigms, hence why things shook out like they did.

ABOUT
The Cobrio national football team is operated under the auspices of the Cobre Football Federation (CFF), to represent the Independent State of Cobrio in international competition.

While the team has existed in some form for around a century at this point -- it was formed during the 2220s while Cobrio sought to gain independence from Osarius, only participating in friendly tournaments and the Rabastor Unity Trophy -- it is only during the past quarter century or so, that Cobrio's national team has been officially recognised by the World Cup Committee. The team's first game after official recognition was a 3-3 draw against Osarius at Tukari Kaita National Stadium -- a newly built stadium near Camaron, the official capital of Cobrio. This stadium also serves as the home venue for the national team.

((On an OOC note, it is perhaps of particular note that the nation of Cobrio has access to, and mastery of, some post-modern/future tech. Not quite interstellar travel level of future tech, but concepts like full-brain emulation and near-universal healing methodology are very much real things in 24th-century Cobrio. Basically, if it exists in Wakanda, it probably exists in Cobrio or is achievable in the next half-century.))

STADIUM
The Panthers play their home games at Tukari Kaita National Stadium, a 72,000 capacity bowl-style stadium situated on the outskirts of Camaron, the national capital. For competitions with requirements for stadia to be all-seaters, the capacity is reduced to 58,000.

The stadium incorporates an athletics track around the pitch, which, in combination with the lack of a roof, some have claimed inhibits the generation of a good atmosphere. However, fans are encouraged to bring instruments to matches, and can often be found performing lively song and dance routines.

Camaron itself is also home to the Oya Ounje -- a massive open-air market situated on the former grounds of the Palazzo Malamocco (once home to an Osarian noble, before Cobre liberation). The Oya Ounje is known for its food offerings in particular, and is a common tourist destination.

KITS
The Cobrio kits are provided by ediraf and designed to represent the nation's deep cultural heritage. The home kits are primarily gold, but incorporate the adinkra -- traditional Cobre symbols said to confer various qualities upon the wearer -- and the other colours of the national flag (green and black).

The away kits are designed in a similar fashion to the traditional uniform of initiates to the zabamince wadanda, in recognition of the honour of being selected. They are almost all black, which is said to represent the void one must embrace when entering battle. The adinkra also feature along the hem, to confer their power upon the wearer.

The goalkeeper kits are primarily green, to represent the land from which the team hails. Cobre culture exalts the land, as it is from the land that all nourishment comes, in some form or another. Traditional beliefs also state that Olugun, the Father of the Irunashe, created man from plant material in the beginning. As with the other kits, the adinkra also feature here, on the sleeves, as a goalkeeper's arms and hands are considered most important.

PLAYING STYLE
Under head coach Marvelous Koleoso, Cobrio have morphed from a cautious "Osarian 4-3-3" (with a dedicated defensive midfielder) to an expansive, adventurous system that plays a high defensive line, and presses aggressively. This has resulted in a far more entertaining spectacle for fans, and has, as a result, seen the popularity of the sport recover to near pre-war levels. It comes with an inherent risk in the defensive phase, but it's generally seen as "worth it".

After more than a decade in the role, Koleoso's overarching philosophy of "unshackled football" has permeated Cobre football culture and precipitated something of a metamorphosis in the national football identity. Now the Panthers are a tactically flexible team, with a much lower reliance on athleticism than in previous years.

Koleoso has throughout his career, often been dismissed as having his head in the clouds, but he is, in fact, an extremely insightful manager. While the criticisms are not entirely baseless -- he does have lofty ideals for what he considers "proper Cobre football" -- he is nevertheless capable of providing his teams with the tools needed to succeed. Much like other well-regarded Cobre coaches such as Emeka Obasi, or Daniel Kunde, Koleoso's strengths lie in organisation and man-management. His system places high demands on his players, however, and this return to World Cup competition is seen as a sort of "crucible", in which the best possible team can be forged.

Most Cobre coaches are neutral, or perhaps a little reactive by nature, tending toward a cautious offense built on a well-organised defence... Koleoso disregards that and goes for a proactive, entertaining approach above all else. "Football is entertainment first," he says. "Of course we are coming to win, but winning without the cheering of the crowd for what you do on the pitch... this is not victory, na." As a result, these new Panthers take more risks than previous iterations.
