Lone goal helps Flavovespia knock Pacitalia into the Losers' Path
Foxes fail to capitalize on a number of first-half chances, proves to be their undoing

CHROMIA, CHROMATIKA — In what was one of the most evenly-matched knockout ties ever set up in a major international football tournament, Flavovespia and Pacitalia met in the winners' semifinal of CAFA Cup X, with a spot in the top bracket final to play for.

It was a stats nerd's dream matchup — Flavovespia sitting eighth in the regional rankings, Pacitalia ninth, and one-one-hundredth of a point (yes, you read that right) separating them on that list. Both teams got through the group stage without a defeat, though Flavovespia had the edge, having notched a third victory out of their four matches, whereas Pacitalia had settled for a pair of wins and a pair of draws.

As the matchup would have suggested on paper, the two teams delivered a stubbornly even battle, with fortune on this night favouring the yellow-and-black-clad side. Flavovespian midfielder Anthony Lane's tally in the 55th minute was enough in the end to send his country along to the winners' final against Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land, with the Foxes once again left to take the long route through to a potential title defence.

For the Pacitalians, they were left rueing a number of uncapitalized chances from the first half that, had luck favoured them, would have put them ahead, at least slightly if not potentially decisively, early on. Bolade's two early tests of Flavovespian keeper Peter Marriott were well handled, while Mau's attempt from just outside the box required a healthy parry from Marriott to stay out.

Lane's clever chip on the attack in the second half neatly pushed the ball through the middle defence, and with Mauro Girometta and Adewunmi Ikogwe scrambling in transition, Lane was able to fool Ander Bera close-in to tuck the ball into the Pacitalian net and put his side ahead 1-0, where they would stay.

The Blue Foxes were left trying desperately over the last 35 minutes to push forward without giving away too much again on the back line. Though it seemed momentum had shifted the Pacitalian way, the avalanche of set pieces given to the Blue Foxes did not produce them an equalizer. A collective groan shot through the stadium in the Chromatik capital city when Mau's header off an 88th-minute Armaou corner sailed just over the bar, summing up the Foxes' bad luck on the night.

Memo Sánchez did make his return, named to the bench for the semifinal against Flavovespia. However, the midfielder didn't get a chance to take the field as, by the time Pacitalian manager Fico Carbone started to make substitutions, his side were already on the wrong end of the scoreline, and Carbone seemed hesitant to risk re-injury in a critical stretch of the match. Sánchez will instead get enhanced conditioning in team practice, ahead of the Losers' Third Round match against either Ko-oren or Aleirave in Urrheddiao.

Though Bera did not earn the clean sheet, he was, like his Flavovespian counterpart, standing on his head in goal. Unfortunately for the Blue Foxes, it appears they may have to take the pitch in the next match without him between the posts. Bera was complaining of back spasms and tightness following the match and is listed as day-to-day. It is a strong likelihood that goalkeeping duties will fall to the largely untested but talented Lamberto Zaccone.

The Foxes may have lost the match, but all hope is not lost — gone (for now) are the days of single-elimination competition. Indeed, Pacitalia find themselves once again in familiar territory. Optimists might be forgiven for pointing out that, in the last tournament, after finishing second in their group, the Foxes were tossed out of the winners' bracket and had to fight their way through the bottom half to get back into contention. What was the outcome? A title win for Pacitalia.

In this tournament, the Foxes finished second in their group, and once again find themselves punted down to the losers' bracket, and left to face another, longer "win-or-you're-out" path back to the title match.

evan’s friends were returning to evan’s house for snackies after playing ko-oren in a hard-fought oceanic anaian trifinal. the two island nations had been battling it out for the chance to be a top-4 team in all of anaia + to play a quasisemifinal on captain pirate’s pirate ship. the team of best friends were sad, though, because they had just lost 3-0. they wouldn’t get to play with their friends anymore during the tournament. but little did they know the residents of space laser dinosaur robot pirate land had arranged something very special for this very special team for once they arrived.

“surprise!” from behind the big ash tree in evan’s backyard out jumped captain pirate + their crew + friendly dinosaurs + mwahaha evil robots + enchanted woodland creatures + a whole bunch of lasers + astronauts from the hypersonic supergalactic spaceship!

“what are you doing?” leo asked.

“we’re giving you a surprise!” captain pirate exclaimed.

“but why?” zoe quizzed their friends, however nice. “we just lost. we’re not going to be able to play anymore.” the newly-defeated team’s heads were largely bowed.

one of the mwahaha evil robots spoke up. “but you did your best!”

“+ you did so well!” chimed in a friendly dinosaur.

“+ you even won a trophy!” added an astronaut.

“they don’t give those out for nothing!”

it did sound nice. but evan was still sad. “but we don’t get to play with our friends anymore,” evan repeated.

it was evan’s dad’s turn to speak up. he had organized the event for the team, because he knew they’d need to hear a hopeful message. “but evan - everyone - you’ll still get to play with each other. you’ll still get to play with all your friends. at the next cafa cup, at the next flags, maybe even in liganaia or other competitions if you want me to sign you up again, + definitely just for fun! they’re still your friends, win or lose. they’re still there for you. they still love you. + they’d still be more than happy to play with you.”

this was the cue for a whole host of the team’s new friends to emerge. friends from countries all over anaia - players, coaches, staff, fans, + more all came to the kiddos + gave them hugs + high fives. “of course we’ll play with you” someone from the crowd said. “after all, how cool is it to play with the champions of the sea of champions?”

evan smiled. that was true. so they had a giant pizza party together, + they got to play again with their friends - not just that night, but for countless nights to come.

Laurderinthen's term ends with one last democratic milestone: the prime minister who gave our democratically elected organisation more permissions than ever to scrutinise the government and help shape policy, bows out with one final achievement on the crossroads of a stronger international position and a more stable political system at home. The parties' leaders convened in Amahne to sign their intentions to join the International Political Party Conferences according to their ideologies. They all signed their documents in the same room and put their applications in the same envelope to symbolise their cooperation despite opposing ideas.

All parties were given time to explore their preferred conference, though when they finally announced their choice, there were some complaints. Some parties were natural fits (Labour in the Federation of Socialism; Midori in Greens Worldwide; FFFP in the Union of the Left; PLÉconomique in the International Alliance for Liberty; the Conservatives in the Worldwide Conservative Union) but as the Ko-orenite system is somewhat different from old-fashioned democracies elsewhere, the others were a worse fit.

Démocratique and Liberal
The first conflict arose between the Démocratique and Liberal parties: they occupy different spaces in the Ko-orenite landscape but come out remarkably similar in international systems. The Liberals' centre-right economic policies make them a great fit for the Democratic Alliance, with parties that inspired them, such as Tumbra's Liberal Party, Darmen's Republican Party, and Banija's People's Protection Movement, but in the end they joined the International Liberal League and their centrists, not fully supporting the democratic values of the DA. In policy, they are more similar to the DA, not the ILL, but the former's explicit democratic support caused them to swerve to a different grouping. Démocratique made the complete opposite move: with centrist policies and a cooperative mindset, they fit in with the ILL, but they decided to join the DA to learn from democratic systems abroad. The two parties will likely work across both conferences to get what they need, and a switch is not out of the question, but the two will never be in the same conference.

Midori and Vert&Bleu
Midori immediately joined the Greens Worldwide, and hoped for Vert&Bleu to pivot to a different grouping, but both being environmentalist parties, they both ended up in GW. Vert&Bleu and Midori are not necessarily friends in the Ko-orenite parliament. Midori are leftist progressives, while Vert&Bleu tend conservative more often than not, choosing green where possible and siding with the liberals/conservatives on most other issues. Midori should feel right at home between the Progressives, Progressive Solidarity, while Vert&Bleu's fit will be debated.

New Conferences
Some parties felt they weren't represented by the existing conferences, and opted to start a new one. One was already inspired by a larger movement and founded the Pirates - the other is the largest party in parliament, the Meritocrats, and are hoping to find like-minded initiatives elsewhere. Just as Démocratique opted to join other democrats for inspiration, the Meritocrats are hoping to attract eager learners, just as they've instructed the many governments in the Constellation. The PInternational (Parti International) have also started their own grouping - the Pan-Multiversal Movement - in a bid to find other parties who want to solve small problems that occur all over the place together, though a move to the ILL could happen.

Three parties have opted to not join any grouping but are still hoping to find some friends in the Non-Inscrits, which, if at all, come together on a per-issue basis. The Nationalists could seek council with other national parties, though as the name suggests, cross-border cooperation for nationalism would feel a tad weird. The regional parties are also in this bloc, and could see allies with United Hawkland's Agrarian Union.

Flavovespia 1-0 Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land


With a Final spot on the line, this match was yet another close knockout tie, but with little time left, it was Flavovespia who delivered the decisive blow. After a string of defensive struggles early on, Flavovespia delighted their fans with a second consecutive clean sheet.

Back in the Capital District, the atmosphere was electric. Flavovespia’s failure to break into the final since they last lifted the trophy meant the fans were nervous, yet excited to try and will their side on to break that streak. However Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land were certainly coming into this game looking strong, and with plenty of support of their own.

It was a frantic start, with Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land deploying their hypergegenpress from the start. Flavovespia were finding any attempt to play along the ground stifled by a swarm of defenders. Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land had early shots from Evan and Jan that Marriott saved well, although a few would argue those shots were slightly selfish from the positions of the players.

Flavovespia needed to adapt, and it was back to some old school route one football. Christopher Hill in particular was finding joy in spotting runs of the wingers out wide. Whilst Jonathan Bagshaw seemed to be the one marked the most, Anthony Lane got away a few times to shoot. However the goalscorer last time out for Flavovespia was a bit wayward today, two decent opportunities cutting inside were sent wide. By the break, it was 0-0, Flavovespia with a single shot on target that was straight at the goalkeeper. The game still looked too close to call at this stage.

The second half had a similar energy to the first half. The energy of Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land was incredible, they were tireless in chasing any loose ball, giving Flavovespia little time to settle. Flavovespia were forced to play more direct, although their wingers began having a bit more success in getting shots away or drawing fouls. However as the clock approached 90 minutes, there was still no goal scored.

The decider came with just 4 minutes to go. Bagshaw was brought down a few metres outside the box. Christopher Hill lined up the free kick, and chipped it perfectly, over the heads of the jumping wall, out of reach of the goalkeeper and just under the bar. An excellent free kick that finally broke the deadlock, and Flavovespia had mere minutes to hold on.

Space Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land threw every last bit of energy to find an equaliser, but Flavovespia had them matched in defence. The final whistle blew, and for Flavovespia, a return to the final for the first time since CAFA Cup 5. Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land join Mertagne, Audioslavia, Pacitalia and Ko-oren in the lowers bracket, and one of those 5 will enter the final. As for Flavovespia, they’ll be training hard, with 2 chances to get one more win, and lift the CAFA Cup for a 3rd time.

A few thousand years ago, Audioslavia had a disastrous fourteen minute experiment with a monarchy. Regardless of how meaningless those fourteen minutes were, the very fact that there was a monarchy at all means two things are true forever. First, there will forever be a lineage of descendants of the usurped monarch. Secondly, it will always occur to at least one person in the world that, hey, maybe there should be a king after all, and while there is a person with a claim to said kinghood, there will always be a Restoration movement, no matter how small or disorganised.

In Audioslavia’s case, there’s also a counter-restoration movement, which aims to brutally murder anyone in Audioslavia should they hold the title of first in line to the throne




"Grand Forum Diner's Club does not exactly sound like a private security firm, I'll grant you that" said Craig, over a dinner of smoked mackerel and some kind of delicious starchy fibrous potato thing Fraser hadn't been able to identify. "The guards there call themselves Repelières" said Hawkins. "Brochure is just a bunch of anti-jokes about security guards.

Because you are, of course, simply a mild mannered fishmonger at a market in Cathair and there is no earthly reason you would want to hire a private security firm to protect you from union members. Or, in this case, because you are about to give birth to the next King of Audioslavia and are rather hoping your child will get to see his first Christmas without being murdered"

"Are you a member of a Diners Club, Fraser?"
"I... honestly don't know what one is"
"Well, long story" said Craig, "but the short version is that if you join, you end up being given a small card that fits in your wallet. It has numbers on and you can use it to pay for meals at restaurants"
"Oh, it's a credit card"
"No" said Craig. "It's a Diners Club Card. The two are distinct. You can't use a Diners Club Card anywhere except restaurants"
"Oh" said Fraser. "Well okay. I assume it has perks that other credit cards don't"
"Not 'other credit cards'" said Craig. "It's not a type of credit card. And the perks are that you can use your Grand Forum Diners Club card in perhaps 0.4% of restaurants in Audioslavia. As many as 2% of the restaurants in Grand Forum alone"
"Wait so why do people get a Diners Club Card if they can't use it in restauraunts"
"They don't want to use it in restaurants" said Craig. "They want large people with guns to protect them from violence"
"Which is why I have one" said Captain Douglas, producing his wallet and expertly flipping a dark blue card out of it. A modern logo featuring the letters GFDC in a rounded font on the top left, a knife and fork in the centre, although on closer inspection the knife seemed... really quite a handy one. One you could properly rip into a lamb shank with. And also the waiter, if you were so inclined.
"And it's why I'll be completely safe when I get to the hospital" said Craig. "The Union will be there, naturally"
"Union are everywhere" said Hawkins, with a hint of disgust.
"But they won't be much of a hinderance, if everything goes to plan"

MERTAGNE THROUGH TO LOSERS' FINAL AFTER WINS AGAINST ANAIAN HEAVYWEIGHTS
Back-to-back fixtures against Audioslavia and Ko-oren see Green Goblins rise to the challenge

Myana, CHROMATIKA-- The Green Goblins have clawed their way back into an upcoming fixture against Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land in the Losers' Final of CAFA X, after a matchweek of fixtures against Audioslavia and Ko-oren in two blistering matches that showcased the best of Mertagnian football in the face of the two faces of post-football. A typical post-football match saw a 1-0 victory against the Bulls, but the Dragonflies were forced to be coaxed out of the defensive third twice before Mertagne were able to seal them away with a 3-2 victory.

As the Mertagnians lined up alongside their oldest allies, many audiences struggled to remember the last time the Claret and Lime actually shook hands from opposing sides of the pitch. Our best guess? CAFA 7, Matchday 1, in which both teams faced off against each other in Matchday 1 and came off of that affair with a point a piece in a 1-1 draw. This time, however, the two sides were locked into a winner takes all situation, and with the stamina that the Audioslavians are able to conjure during their excuse for a football match, Mertagne would be giving it their all to secure a win within 90 minutes. Of course, six years (or a few more if you're in Audioslavia, but that's literally a thing of the past) has passed since that encounter, and a mostly fresh batch of Audioslavians were on the pitch to attack (or not) a mostly fresh batch of Mertagnians.

The match was a slow burner, because of course it was, with the dying embers of Kontrapuntzeka as directed by Monterroso clashing with the probably also dying embers of 'pre-football' choreographed by Claudio Vantula. Vantula is a man with a lot of history in Audioslavia, having played for many years as key member of KT Itzallovalle in the National League. While his time and Monterroso's never really overlapped, the two managers seem to have a mutual awareness if not respect for each other, and this certainly played out as the two diametrically opposed styles of play clashed on the pitch. The Mertagnians went in for the attack via crosses over and over again, knowing that sticking to the fundamentals and refusing to give the opponents an inch lest they take a mile of shithousery was the best way to eventually secure a win. The Mertagnian attackers likely felt a bit unsupported in the attacking third, with many midfielders choosing to stay back in the event of a counter-attack from the Bulls, but they knew that when playing against post-football, if you can get the ball into the box and score before your opponent, they're unlikely to be able to respond in kind before the final whistle.

The goal in question arrived for Mertagne just before the end of the first half, as Amy Quennell delivered on the promise of a cross that was met brilliantly by Trebuchet's feet, and the ball was tapped into the net from deep within the box just before the throng of defenders, and namely Metro, who was in goal, could get to it. This came as a relief to the Mertagnians, and before long both sides took a quick break at the half and Vantula took this as a sign to make a defensive pivot and switch to a 5-4-1 formation by taking Trebuchet off and subbing on an additional Centre-Back in the form of Mari Vastell. This 'five-at-the-back' wall had been untested by Mertagne thus far in the tournament, but Vantula mentioned in the post-match press conference that he had been working on it in training and was confident that, when utilised, it would be able to hold off the worst of 'post-football', and therefore the Bulls, for the remainder of the match. The gambit paid off, albeit not as easily as the team may have wished for, as the Audioslavians weren't completely docile and did manage some deep runs into the box, with two shots on target in the second half that were clutched away from the goal by Saif Dedec - one from standard play and the other from a corner that looked so close to heading to the top of the net. The final whistle blew, and with it, so did Audioslavia's hopes of making it deeper into the tournament, as the Green Goblins would be going on to face one of Pacitalia or Ko-oren in the Losers' Fourth Round. As the time ticked down on that match, in a shock to Mertagnian pundits who had been keeping a keen eye on their close rivals and the incumbent champions, it would be Ko-oren who would be the next team to battle against Mertagne, having handily dispatched the Blue Foxes in that most post-football of scorelines - 1-0.

After the match against Audioslavia, many took to social media incensed by the news that Anaian cult arthouse post-rock band Audio Versus Ko-oren would be sealing their latest album, whose title had not leaked to the public, 'in the vault indefinitely'. However, as the cryptic statement from the head of the band's marketing team simply stated "New album - in the vault indefinitely', it's unknown if this is actually the name of the latest album from the band and they simply intend to release it at a later date, such as an awry Cup of Harmony, or even a World Cup Qualifying if you're to believe the Cathair critics, or if they have actually physically sealed away the masters of the album in some kind of difficult to heist vault.

Either way, avant garde post-rock was not on the playlist of the Mertagnians, who would instead take to the pitch for round two against post-football, hoping this time to put it in the ground for good. Ko-oren, as many know, are a defensive powerhouse in the game, and often against the Dragonflies a similar situation presents itself - score early, and try and hold that benefit for the rest of the match, and most importantly - do not slip up on the fundamentals. Only pass when you need to. Keep it short to minimise interception. Shoot only when there is near certainty the ball is going to go in. And most importantly, do not let the opposition get a sniff of the ball in the box. In a way, this form of pre-football actually wraps back around to Lele Manguele's interpretation of Ko-orenite post-football, which is certainly a quagmire for all involved.

Vantula opted to field a third attacker, and shy away from the defence, switching to a rather old-school Mertagnian 3-4-3 formation, with the hope that the additional pressure on the Ko-orenite defence would be enough to break through and secure victory. This did work out, but sacrificing defensive nous did mean that the Ko-orenites were able to weasel their way towards goal during several opportunities, scoring a goal from a free kick in the 13th minute, when the Mertagnian midfield was perhaps a bit overzealous in their interpretation of "don't give them an inch", and nearly gave Annefleur Nakasarudhen an inch of boot studs to the back of the leg, which saw Stewart Bickley get a yellow card and Toshitsugu Hiraide get a goal. Things looked even worse as the Ko-orenites scored a second goal just before the half-hour mark, this time with an exceptional long-ball punted through by Misako Yamakawa that appeared to defy all angles from the cameras and also from Callaghan Bauldry, who was likely expecting a relaxed shift at the net factory this match.

Going into the second half, Mertagne were 2-0 down against one of the region's best teams, and while they'd smelt the goal a couple of times, none of their shots had made it past the hands Galorian Antair. Ko-oren's young goalkeeping talent was on full display, and the Green Goblins were struggling to find a way past the 20-year old, even with the combined force of Trebuchet, Burro Curwood, and Nazer Armenadriz. Things seemed to click into place at the hour mark, however, as an explosive ten minutes from the Mertagnian side saw them trip up the Ko-orenite defence, with two unbelievable goals from captain Burro Curwood, who seemed on a mission to prove that, as one of the older generation of the team, he still has what it takes to get the job done. Mertagne's third goal of the match came from a corner in the 78th minute, that found the head of Jordan Will, as one of the taller members of the squad, and near effortlessly breezed past the gloves of Antair to put Mertagne in the lead for the first time in the match. With just 12 minutes on the clock plus a smattering of injury time, Vantula made his last substitution and brought the team back to a balanced 4-4-2 formation, successfully holding off the worst of the Ko-orenite attacks for the remainder of the match and securing a place in the Losers' Final against Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land.

Mertagne will once again come up against the pre-schoolers to determine who will take on Flavovespia in the Grand Final. Both teams will likely be trying really really hard here, and Claudio Vantula has said that the kid gloves are 'probably a bit more off than last time'. While that means we certainly won't be seeing high powered smash kicks to the ball when surrounded by several youngsters, expect Mertagne to act a bit more as the bullies on the playground than the chaperones to the Junior Under the Sea Dance. In the event that we do get called the principal's office, Claudio Vantula will likely be taking his hearing aid out, and pointing at a random passer by claiming they 'did it'. Rumour has it that one member of the Mertagnian team has volunteered to be be infected with a strange affliction called the 'cheese touch', which is apparently rife in playgrounds across the region and makes you a social pariah, which is useful for maintaining control of the ball. This rumour has not been confirmed by the FMF, and in a statement released by the football federation, regardless of the result, "Everyone will get a story before bedtime".

Two goals in 3 minutes saw Mertagne win the first game of the final of CAFA Cup 10. Flavovespia would’ve been the champions, but were unable to get the win to lift the trophy at the first attrmpt in Chromatika. Flavovespia have had their first loss of the knockout stages, so go again in a rematch of the Final, which is now the winner takes it all.

No changes to the lineup of a Flavovespia side who had been in great form, particularly defensively, since the knockout stages began. They won the coveted berth to the final with two chances to win, needing one last win.

Mertagne came into the tournament as the top seed and it was easy to see why in the early stages. Their passing and movement was a step ahead of Flavovespia, and chances were almost all falling to them. Nerves were around the ground for Flavovespia, it looked like when, not if they’d concede first.

Nevertheless, Flavovespia had one great chance in the 32nd minute. Charles Adams found a little space in the middle of the park, and angled a long through ball to Jonathan Bagshaw. Bagshaw had pace, and although marked, shot almost into the corner. Saif Dedec was at full stretch to tip it wide. Mertagne had good chances too, Peter Marriott was under considerable pressure, but he stayed firm, to keep it goalless at the break.

Going into the second half, Flavovespia looked to have firmed up their defence a bit more. Charles Adams and Christopher Hill were slightly less adventurous, the goal seemingly to restrict Mertagne and hope for a break. Anthony Lane and Jonathan Bagshaw had pace down the wings, but were struggling for service or a target in the box though.

Mertagne broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. Burro Curwood, captain and one of Mertagne’s stars, proved his worth. Some great dribbling saw him hold off Paul Taylor, before a tricky shot from a narrowing angle saw Peter Marriott beaten by the cross goal effort. A wonderful solo effort, and Mertagne had the advantage.

Just 2 minutes later, it was 0-2. This one fell to Jordan Will. A great cross in saw Curwood’s header blocked by Peter Marriott, however the rebound was at Will. Jordan Will chested it down and on the volley smashed the ball home, too much pace for any Flavovespia player to get a block. 66 minutes gone and in a flash, Mertagne had a 2 goal lead.

Flavovespia with little to lose tried to go for broke in the latter stages, practically playing a 4-2-4 with Richard Birmingham and Peter Langdon subbed on. Langdon’s fresh legs were giving the defence some issues, but Dedec looked confident in goal. Some would say a two goal lead is dangerous, but Flavovespia couldn’t break through to even get the first.

0-2 it finished, no trophy celebrations for either side yet, and disappointment for the Flavovespia fans in the ground and at home. One last game is to be played in CAFA Cup 10, someone is going home with the trophy. The question is, can Flavovespia learn their lessons from this game, and being the trophy back for the first time since CAFA Cup 5?

ONE STEP BEYOND AS MERTAGNE ARRIVE IN FAMILIAR TERRITORY

Chromia, MERTAGNE-- Mertagne have managed to ensure that they match or improve on their previous CAFA performance, after a scintillating game against regional powerhouses Flavovespia in the Grand Final of CAFA X.

Mertagne's performance in the last few games of the tournament has been nothing short of remarkable, as a loss to Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land in the Winners' Semifinals placed them on a different path to the one they had experienced last time around in CAFA 9. Here, in the Losers' Path, Mertagne were able to pull out all the stops after being humbled by Evan's Class, beating back the upper echelons of post-football and returning to face the pre-schoolers in an exciting, high scoring match that will make a fantastic bedtime story for the youth of both nations.

But, awaiting Mertagne after such a struggle would be one of the best teams in Anaia, as Flavovespia had been busy dispatching Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land in the Winners' Final, after an emphatic performance on the other side of that bracket. It seemed that in this CAFA, a matchup against Flavovespia was practically inevitable, and the fates had conspired to ensure that it would be at the last possible opportunity - the Grand Final.

The Green Goblins knew as they set out onto the field at the Capitalizt Dome that, if they were lucky enough to pull off a victory here, it would not be the end of the road. Finally empathising with the Pacitalians of last cycle, and perhaps at last understanding the hunger that drove the Blue Foxes to their victory in CAFA 9, Mertagne were ready for the possibility of a rematch and endeavoured to give as little away about their tactics against the hornets as possible, lest Victor Adeyemo's squad find a way to exploit them. The long game was truly the only way to go in this final, and Vantula's squad was ready to play it.

Flavovespia fielded the strongest incarnation of their squad, which has seen great success previously, and was met well by much of the Mertagnian first-choice side. The game began with neither team wanting to press the advantage too much, but the Green Goblins were able to build some momentum early with some short-passing play that saw them eke ahead on possession statistics in the first half hour. The first real chance of the game came in the 32nd minute, when Johnathan Bagshaw was able to get a shot off from a long ball, as Charles Adams had astutely found a gap through the centre line of the Mertagnian defence, but Saif Dedec was able to reach out and keep the ball wide of the post. Mertagne attempted to respond in kind, and after six minutes were able to get a shot on target of their own, as Aislin du Moucel played the ball neatly into the box for Nazer Armenadriz, but Peter Marriott was cleanly able to get around the ball and clutched it to his chest, denying the Green Goblins the opportunity to take the lead.

With the match still scoreless by the start of the second half, Claudio Vantula knew that he had successfully managed to keep the Hornets at bay long enough to start taking some risks. Fresh legs in the form of Miliav Petremol would be brought on to shore up that central defensive line that looked a little wobbly in the first half, and Curwood seemed to instruct the team to take the fight to the opposing goal a little more, as the midfield began to push forward with a little bit more urgency. While the attacks seemed to crash on the shore of the Hornets for a number of attempts, something gave way in the 64th minute, as Burro Curwood managed to hold off the difficult pokes from the Flavovespian defence and slot the ball just past Marriott's outstretched hands to clinch the lead.

The work wasn't done yet, however, as the Green Goblins pressed the advantage from the restart with a vicious counter-attack that saw Burro Curwood quickly back in the box and ready to open up the lead once again. Peter Marriott, keen to stop Curwood, deftly blocked the ensuing header, but the ball found itself in the sphere of influence of Jordan Will, who was in the right place at the right time and, with some excellent ball control, was able to volley the ball against a scrambling Peter Marriott and into the back of the net. Confident that that could be enough for win, but ever wary of how quickly these leads can be undone in the annals of regional football, Vantula's side attempted to keep possession out of the feet of the hornets, but some tactical substitutions and some players with more in the tank than a Mertagne squad that, over the near ninety minutes, had given it their all, saw Flavovespia firmly looking to claw the scoreline back towards the end of the match.

With the final whistle blowing as the scoreline showed 0-2 to the Green Goblins, Mertagne have managed to buy themselves the final amount of time they need to look towards taking home the CAFA Cup for the second time in three cycles. This is a momentous occasion for the national team, who have shown that in a double elimination tournament, they can make it over the line both ways - via Winners' and Losers' paths.

On the line for the opponents is an historic third CAFA victory, which would make Flavovespia beyond a doubt the most successful team in Anaian footballing competition. Mertagne, on the other hand, are looking to take their second trophy, after failing to defend their title at the final hurdle in CAFA 9. Claudio Vantula will be looking to make a statement in this, his first tournament managing the national side, and Victor Adeyemo will be looking to cause a resurgent buzz in the hive of Flavovespia with a victory not seen in nearly a decade. The stakes have rarely been higher for Anaian reigonal football, and this tournament has been an absolute sizzler for all teams involved. The Chromatik public have been treated to a fantastic display of regional football, and those fans that have been lucky enough to travel to the Anomalous Isles, alongside the spectators at home, will surely be talking about this tournament for years, and the result of this will certainly be one that influences the doctrine of both teams in tournaments to come, regardless of who is on the winning side.
