Thoughts on the Britonish team performance at the IAC
At a tournament that the Britonish are hosting, it is incredibly unfortunate that the hosts themselves most probably won't qualify to the knock-out stage. Many things could be to blamed here - the group draw saw Britonisea playing against very difficult opponents including the best nation in the entire tournament. It was widely touted Group C would be one of the most difficult alongside Group B which at the moment is experiencing a four-way tie for that final third place spot. Perhaps for the image of Britonisea in football, this was not the right time to host the tournament. The Britonish football team are getting battered from pillar to post at these international tournaments and never play friendlies - of course the football team are struggling at a tournament where the stakes are high. A team that hasn't even come close to a world cup qualification or an Olympic medal can't be expected to suddenly win big time at the IAC. The general mood amongst the Britonish camp is intense infuriation with a blame game most definitely set to be had at the end of the tournament. The AFB should be proud of the hosting they have done and they cannot be faulted for the effort they've put into hosting an exceptional tournament. Football fans might have wondered why the AFB, who are mostly funding this tournament alongside the Government, chose to spend money on this incredibly expensive 24-day tournament instead of using that money to improve footballing standards in the country? Why was it more important to host the Independents Cup compared to qualifying for the World Cup - a feat that isn't impossible from arguably one of the nations with the best sporting facilities in the multiverse, a nation that has consistently performed well in a wide range of sports if the Olympic Games are anything to go by. Was it worth risking embarrassing the football team such a public fashion? Who’d think a team that is not even ranked in the top 100 should then go and host the largest regional football tournament? In a tournament where placements affect those all important KPB rankings, this wasn't the start the country and team needed or wanted.
Though... The general Britonish public shouldn't be confused for the feelings of the pundits, teams and sports buffs. There were no high expectations from the Britonish public about how well their team would do but one thing they were able to experience was 121 international matches played within their borders. The multiverse’s eyes have been trained on Britonisea so far for the last two weeks and will be for another week and a half. People from across the multiverse have been learning about Britonisea and all of its quirkiness, its strange city and stadium names that are hard to pronounce and even harder to spell. How teams would go from a Gotham-like skyline full of energy and life in the south to sleepy, cold, mountainous but picturesque urban areas in the north. The Britonish have been treated to non stop sporting action lately which has been, reportedly, in preparation for a “much larger sporting event” that The BAS refuse to speak more about. While it could take years for this to come into fruition, the idea of Britonisea's hosting profile expanding has finally happened with the nation bidding for fantastic events and hosting them well and there seems to be no signs of slowing down with a plan to bid for the next Basketball Champs too.
There will be conversations to be had at the AFB after the competition comes to an end, especially in the run up to the next World Cup but it is exciting that Britonisea has turned a new chapter in sports.
