Welcome to the Isle of Albion, and the Fiefdom of Limey George, for the 39th edition of the Esportivan regional championship.

A total of thirty-two teams have entered, and will be seeded into four pots according to the latest Campionato Esportiva ranks. As hosts, Limey George will automatically go into pot one.

From there, the teams will be split into eight groups of four, each comprising one team from each pot. Each group will then contest a single round-robin tournament. Classification in the group stage will be by the following criteria:
  • points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw),
  • head to head points,
  • head to head goal difference,
  • wins
  • goal difference,
  • and the drawing of lots (OOC: a one-off match scorinated with RP bonus only)

Upon conclusion of the group stage, the group winners will be paired off against another group's runner-up in the round of sixteen in the knockout stage.
Knockout rounds will be decided with extra time and penalties shootouts as necessary.

RP Bonus Information
For each matchday, I will try to provide prompts for those who would like to use them. Whether or not you do will not affect RP bonus. After each matchday, I will also provide information on RP bonuses such as median bonus, number of RPers, percentage of RPers earning max bonus, and so forth.

All of the above information will be kept here, for reference.
Prompt: Football is a relatively new "professional" option in Limey George, so many would argue that the country doesn't have a strong "football tradition". In truth, the sport has been played, in various forms, for hundreds of years on the Isle. It is only relatively recently (the last century or so) that the rules were codified, and even more recently that professional teams were allowed to exist. Prior to the formation of the Limey League a little over a decade ago, teams were funded entirely by Governors and other landed titleholders, and players still had to work shifts like any other serf. What's the reputation and history of the sport in your nation?

Total number of RPs:
Median bonus: 5/5
86% of RPs scored maximum bonus, while 100% scored at least half of maximum bonus.

Prompt: Agriculture and Horticulture are major parts of Limey culture, given the country's history and main export. There are thousands of diverse species of plant across the Isle of Albion, small though it is, with the most notable of course, being the Lime. More specifically, the Limey Lime (Citrus georgos). Distinguishable from other known forms of lime throughout the multiverse by its structure -- it's far tougher than other limes -- and its subtle aroma which conceals its strong acidic flavour. Are there any unique or otherwise interesting plants native to your nation?

Total number of RPs: 8
Median bonus: 5/5
75% of RPs scored maximum bonus, while 100% scored at least half of maximum bonus.

Prompt: By now you've probably noticed that the Fiefdom of Limey George is ... unlike most nations. The majority of locals are not allowed to travel -- there are special circumstances, and even then, most people cannot leave the country without express authorisation from George. The right to travel in Limey George is dictated by your social class, and sometimes your rank within that class. For example, the vast majority of people in Limey George are considered "serfs" with no right to travel at all without express permission from a Governor (or higher ranking citizen). Supers, and Greenies have the right to travel, but cannot leave the Isle without permission from the Most Esteemed Leader. It's a whole thing. But, if they could travel abroad... what kinds of things would Limeys be able to see and do in your nation?

Total number of RPs: 8
Median bonus: 5/5
63% of RPs scored maximum bonus, while 100% scored at least half of maximum bonus.

Prompt: As we all know, the Fiefdom provides the overwhelming majority of limes imported to the various nations within the region. There are other exports from Limey George but who really cares? What we do care about is... what does your nation export a lot of? Maybe you export a lot of something in particular to Limey George, in fact...

Total number of RPs:

Travel Information
All international flights will land at Georgstead International Airport, but the airport has direct rail links (i.e. no change of train required) to each of the cities hosting matches for the tournament.

The routes are as follows:
  • Georgstead → Morristone (via Bermont)
  • Georgstead → Jameshurst (via Haestacre)
  • Georgstead → Sandthorpe
  • Georgstead → Tuistby
  • Georgstead → Valthwaite

There are also direct routes between the following cities:
  • Haestacre → Valthwaite
  • Tuistby → Sandthorpe
  • Morristone → Tuistby
  • Valthwaite → Bermont (via Georgstead)
  • Haestacre → Morristone (via Bermont)
  • Jameshurst → Bermont (via Haestacre)
Note that you cannot travel directly from Jameshurst to Morristone, and you will need to change at either Haestacre or Bermont.

Climate
The climate of Limey George is classified as hot summer mediterranean (Köppen: Csa). The tournament will take place during the summer, meaning matches will have additional "drinks breaks" to avoid dehydration and heatstroke related issues for players.

Expect the temperature to be largely in the range of 28-36 degrees Celsius (82-97 degrees Fahrenheit) for the most part, though some locations will be warmer due to urban heat effect, or distance from the coast, potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius (approximately 104 degrees Fahrenheit) and hotter. Some other locations may be a little cooler, due to elevation, rural surroundings, or coastal breezes, though it is rare to have temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer. Haestacre in particular is known to have temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius in summer fairly regularly, owing to its distance from the coast and location in the Ilddalen ("Valley of Fire"), a region of the Isle known for its high temperature.

There are roughly 50-60 days of precipitation per year, largely falling in the winter months, often torrentially. Snow is essentially unheard of, with maybe a dozen living Limeys ever having witnessed it. Half of those overseas. There are records of heavy thunderstorms in the area around Bermont during summer, due to cold ocean currents and sometimes cooler winds blowing over the mountains to the west, but this is very rare. It is more common for heavy fog to occur instead, meaning matches played at Mountain View Stadium may have impaired visibility.

Stadia
Each of the host stadiums is occupied by a team in the Limey League, with the Limey Association Football Federation (LAFF) believing it is only fair to give every one of the Isle's eight professional clubs -- and their respective communities -- the opportunity to host international football. While the stadia are not particularly large, each host city will also have a designated "fan park" which can hold significantly more people. So travelling without a match ticket isn't necessarily a problem, as long as you're happy to spend money at a fan park, I suppose. Not that it would be expensive. While the Limey economy is reasonably strong, the cost of living is low, since most Limeys are paid very little. Local vendors may attempt to overcharge tourists, but even then, their limited understanding of what "expensive" actually is, means you'll probably be fine.

For administrative purposes, fixtures have been grouped to co-ordinate organisation and minimise travel. In the group stage, two groups will have their matches held in the same "area".

Groups A and B will have their matches held at Lime Grove Lane and Mountain View Stadium.
Groups C and D will have their matches held at The Factory and Dockside Stadium.
Groups E and F will have their matches held at Golden Croft and The Ramparts.
Groups G and H will have their matches held at The Garden and Brygga.

NOTE: Images shown below are "artist's impressions" (OOC: generated by Midjourney)

Image
Lime Grove Lane
Georgstead, Hjertelen
Capacity: 32,000

The national stadium, and home to Georgstead Albion. Built just a decade ago to replace the aging venue Albion used to call home, lime green features heavily in the design, as you'd expect. Located on the outskirts of Georgstead -- not too far from Georgstead International Airport, actually -- with two dedicated train stations on different lines; one on each side of the stadium -- it is extremely accessible. Built in a bowl design, quite common for the Isle, considering the weather, every seat has a pretty good view.

Image
Mountain View Stadium
Bermont, Hjertelen
Capacity: 28,000

Built into the side of Mount Beorm just outside Bermont, with one end left open to allow an access path, Mountain View Stadium does what it says on the tin: it grants views of the mountain. Also the nearby Bermont, actually. The open end can be a little jarring, though, and goalkeepers have commented on the strangeness of it. Home to Bermont Town, Mountain View is widely considered "an experience". Cobre international, Babatunde Warrington, cites it as being one of his favourite stadiums, remembering his time playing in the Limey League.

Image
The Factory
Haestacre, Boteshire
Capacity: 29,500

Located in the centre of an industrial sector of Haestacre -- itself a very industrial town -- The Factory is an imposing construction of steel and stone. Built by locals, near their workplaces -- so they could attend matches immediately after clocking off work -- it is one of the few things Limeys anywhere really take pride in. The Governor of Haestacre operates a system whereby locals can trade in hours of work for privileges, such as attending matches at The Factory. It works well. Haestacre often tops productivity rankings, and is the main processing centre for raw materials in the country.

Image
Dockside Stadium
Jameshurst, Boteshire
Capacity: 29,000

The Dockside, as locals call it, is a popular stadium for its location more than anything. Built atop an artificially-built platform jutting offshore, it provides a fantastic sea view as well as a good view of the coastline. The docks and port at Jameshurst never seem to stop bustling, and even at night, ships can be seen coming and going. Visitors will likely be accosted by several tour guides outside the stadium, too, desperate to sell tickets to the shipyard museum and tour, or any of the countless maritime-related attractions in the city. It'll be easy to ignore them, though. Do you know how loud docks get?

Image
The Ramparts
Morristone, Fjernejord
Capacity: 27,500

The Ramparts, built in the remains of a military fortification known as Fort Raccoon, are often overshadowed by the nearby Fort Badger (and the Fox Holes), but offer a truly interesting experience in their own right. Previously, the site was used as a storage space for mined ore and lumber harvested from nearby forests. Twenty years ago, a restoration project was started by the Governors of Fjernejord, an initiative headed up by the Governor of Morristone. Knowing that a professional football league was being planned, they pre-empted the demand for a stadium and all-but guaranteed that the north-west would be granted a team license as a result. The end result of the project was a magnificent venue that, while probably not accurate in the slightest to the original appearance of Fort Raccoon, still captures the imagination and serves to be one of the more unusual, and memorable, football venues in the multiverse.

Image
Brygga
Sandthorpe, Hjertelen
Capacity: 24,000

Officially the Sandthorpe Esplanade Park, the stadium is more commonly known as Brygga ("The Pier"). The smallest of the stadia serving as home to the eight professional Limey football teams, Brygga is also located on an artificially-built platform jutting out into the sea. The difference, however, is that the route to the stadium is along a short pier branching off the seafront esplanade in Sandthorpe. Its location at the end of the esplanade is deliberate, so as to not obstruct views on the seafront, which is the main attraction for the town. Notably, Brygga has more than just a football stadium within its walls. It is also home to the only legal casino in the country, as well as a cinema, thanks to Sandthorpe's reputation as a playground for the upper classes. The smaller capacity is also a side-effect of this, as more space has been dedicated to "luxury" seating and hospitality options.

Image
Golden Croft
Tuistby, Forsteblik
Capacity: 27,000

Tuistby is perhaps the main city in the greenest part of the country -- outside of George's home, I guess -- and it shows. There are over a hundred orchards in the north east, with three of the five largest lime orchards in the country in and around Tuistby. Golden Croft is situated near one of the smaller ones, where "horties" -- the nickname for the specialists who develop new hybrid plants and so on -- experiment with new cultivars of lime. One end of the stadium is deliberately left open to make that orchard visible, in fact. There is a small terrace behind the goal, but it doesn't rise very high. Behind it, miles of green can be seen, consisting the various groves, orchards, and fields in which the majority of the food needed to fulfil the nation's requirements is grown.

Image
The Garden
Valthwaite, Swellscira
Capacity: 28,000

Located near the Brannhage -- in fact, one of the biodomes, on an elevated platform, is visible from the stadium -- in Valthwaite Central Park, The Garden is mostly surrounded by a thicket of trees. Elevated above the tree canopy, the stadium stands out in the park; but also adds to it. Using sustainable energy for all of its functionality, thanks to extensive solar panelling around the park, and having all of its seating built from wood -- taken from the trees that had to be cleared to build the stadium -- it was designed to be "the same, but different" when compared to its immediate surroundings. It is said that The Garden is the favourite stadium of George's wife and eldest son, both known lovers of nature, and as a result, it is not uncommon to see them at matches held there, though neither professes to be a fan of Valthwaite Town. His Georgesty, of course, would never proclaim a favourite stadium or team. That would be unfair.

About the host nation
Basics
The Fiefdom of Limey George -- also referred to as the Isle of Albion -- is an absolute monarchy, led by the Most Esteemed Leader, His Limeyness George XLVII. In effect, this means His Georgeousness is the owner of all lands within the territory of the Fiefdom. In practice, His Limeocity delegates responsibility to chosen Governors, who oversee districts as they see fit, so long as it falls within the acceptable bounds of all decrees made by the Supreme Cultivator of the Fiefdom.

Governors are beholden to the Primate of the Isle, and must pay tribute to the Most Esteemed Leader as demanded. They are held to a higher standard than the average Limey in accordance with law. As a result, they tend to be quite georgearious toward those living under their jurisdiction. Of course, as many of you are from nations with far more personal freedoms (and inefficient economies to match), you may have different opinions on this perception. Feel free to point this out, knowing that you will likely be ignored. The Patriarch of Horticulturists has more pressing matters to attend to than the bleating of foreign sheep.

Residents of the Isle are commonly called "Limeys", due to the country's absolutely massive production of limes, the main national export. The majority of people speak Limese, which is effectively an older form of Common (English) which is mostly mutually intelligible with Modern Common, but also uses some words borrowed/derived from Falkyr, Marauder, and Savojarsk (OOC: Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish). There are also some antiquated terms which may be confusing to native speakers of Modern Common. Also, local colloquialisms can be ... strange. You'll mostly be okay though if you speak Common. That's the important bit.

As you've probably noticed, a lot of things in this country revolve around limes. Specifically the native Limey cultivar (Citrus georgos). It can be a little overwhelming but Limeys are pretty good at making lime-flavoured things. Expect lime-accented ales, beers and ciders, in particular. The crazier among you might try their lime-infused spirit, colloquially known as "Inside Out Juice", allegedly because it makes you feel like you're inside out. How someone came up with that, I have no idea. How would you know what it feels like to be inside out? Anyway if you try it, make sure you get it from a proper shop and not any of the random stands you might see (those are for locals, trust me). Also make sure you get the "sour" option, which is just intensely sour. The other one (the so-called "green" version) might have all kinds of other stuff in it, nobody knows for sure how it's made. My cousin once claimed he had one that let him see the face of the Citrus Mother (don't ask).

While education is mandatory (and free) until age fourteen, it doesn't really focus on things like reading and writing. Those things have limited use for the majority of workers on the Isle. So why waste time teaching them? As a result, signage is often pictographic, as most Limeys are not fantastic readers. Expect a bank to simply have an image of coins outside, or a grocer to have a picture of some staple foods. Things like that. If you're ever unsure, just ask a local. Most Limeys are happy to help -- especially if you're offering them an ale in return -- though it probably wouldn't go well for them if it was ever discovered they failed to be helpful, what with the Discordance law...

Laws
Speaking of laws... The overwhelming majority of Limeys have some role to play in the -- frighteningly efficient -- cultivation, harvest, packaging and/or export of limes, and the majority of the laws of the land are aimed at maintaining that efficiency.

Most of these laws will not apply to foreign visitors, since they are not part of the national means of production. However, visitors should be wary of falling foul of the nation's "Discordance" law. Effectively, any sort of behaviour which could be considered to disrupt the efficiency of the national production, or otherwise introduce "discordant elements" is prosecutable. By and large, this doesn't happen to tourists, due to the substantial leeway afforded them by His Georgesty -- the Lord of the Orchards has expressed a desire to attract foreign visitors, and investment, you see. Generally speaking, as long as you don't damage any Lime Property (that is, anything owned by His Georgelency; which is basically all land and property I suppose) you'll probably be okay. They tend to be pretty lenient to outsiders. The first time, anyway.

Anyway just don't do anything stupid, and the clubbers (the Limey equivalent of modern day cops, I guess? They're more like security guards who can beat the crap out of you though) won't uh... club... you.

Oh, I also mentioned the right to travel. That's a whole thing but basically you need to understand the hierarchy of classes. There are basically seven levels. Again, there's more to it than that but for your purposes... there are seven. At the bottom you have serfs. That's about 85% of the population. They aren't allowed to leave the district they were born in without permission, basically. Then you have the next layer which is made up of clubbers, squires, and service level jobs like servants, handmaidens, cooks, etc. They make up about 10% of the population, and they can travel freely within the region they were born in. Above them you have supers and vendors. They make up about 5% of the population and can travel between regions but they can't permanently relocate. Above them you have greenies, which make up about 3% of the population. They have the same travel rights as supers and vendors, but can relocate permanently to another region if they want. The levels above these, you're not likely to encounter so I won't go into detail, but basically it goes Governors, Barons, and then Lords. Then the Most Esteemed Leader himself. Governors can't leave the country without permission, but Barons and Lords can.

Like I said before, there's more to it than this, relating to things like the size of the land you are Baron/Lord over, or the population you Govern, and so on... but as a primer, it'll do.

Attractions
For those of you inclined to "make a trip of it" and do things other than "watch the football", you may enjoy a trip to one of the following attractions on the Isle.

The Ishage (Ice Garden)
Located in the upper hills near Bermont, the Ice Garden is a permanent art exhibition, home to a collection of ice sculptures and spun glass "plants". You'll want to layer up, though, as it lives up to its name with temperatures kept artificially low to prolong the life of the ice sculptures. They sell winter clothes there, though, if you're in need.

The Brannhage (Fire Garden)
Located near Valthwaite, the Fire Garden is a collection of controlled biospheres, each filled with exotic plants. Much like the Ishage, the Brannhage lives up to its name with the biospheres being very warm, and many also quite humid. The gift shop does a particularly interesting collection of lime-hybrid fruits, if you're so inclined.

Sandthorpe Pier
The main pier in Sandthorpe. You can find it at Sandthorpe Sensations, a popular theme park for the wealthy Limey elite, and it's one of early-modern Limey George's most impressive pieces of architecture. Dating back over a hundred years, the pier was constructed with a specialist local concrete mixture, and features some intricate detailed features. The tea rooms at the end of the pier were built in honour of the House of George, and serve some of the finest teas available in the multiverse. They don't have a casino though. Just a strange workaround where you win tokens. You're not technically supposed to be able to trade them for things, but you can always find "a guy" if you were so inclined. You probably won't even get into trouble, as long as you give the clubber a cut...

National Museum
The Limey National Museum in Georgstead is particularly interesting as it is situated at the original home of the original George. The small orchard and farm his family owned is still intact, with the progenitor lime tree still producing fruit. The tale of how George became Sire Paramount of the Isle of Albion is a fascinating one, and the museum has some well-produced video exhibitions on the topic.

Serfs' Gallery of Creation
Haestacre is a pretty harsh city in many ways, but George XLI, in his Georgeariousness, recognised this and decreed that workers in Haestacre specifically be given an extra day off once per month "to engage in alternate creation". The Gallery houses the finest works of art created by the workers of Haestacre. You'd never believe how beautiful a teapot handcrafted by an illiterate lumberjack could be...

Jameshurst Shipyard and Port
James was a doctor, and friend of the original George. His wisdom led original George to understand the untapped potential of the lime as a ward against disease, and ultimately his ascent to power. The mysterious disappearance of James at sea, shortly after his discovery that limes prevented scurvy, is said to have deeply wounded original George to the point he renamed the large port in the south west of the Isle (the largest on the Isle, in fact) in his honour, and commissioned an enormous shipyard there to supply the required vessels for what would eventually become a gigantic merchant navy. The shipyard is still in action to this day, and the adjacent port has grown to accomodate enough vessels to handle half a billion freight tons of cargo per year.

Fort Badger and the Fox Holes
Near Morristone, you can see Fort Badger; a sprawling fort built to look like a warship. In the early days of the ascendancy of the original George, the Isle was subject to various raids and invasions. To counter this, His Georgeness ordered the construction of military fortifications near the coastline in various locations. Fort Badger is one of only two such structures remaining. Part of its enduring character is the "Fox Holes" nearby: a network of underground tunnels allowing easy, yet covert, resupply from Morristone. As a result, Fort Badger never once fell to enemy forces.

Tuistby Harvest Festival
Around the time of the final, the annual lime harvest should be concluding. In Tuistby, the local Governor insists that the workers have three days off every year to throw a festival celebrating the harvest. He gets around the law by hiring migrant contractors for this period, knowing the majority of the work is already done... so you might get mistaken for a worker, but I'm sure it will be fine once you explain. The festival has ancient roots, too. Apparently in the time of original George, a fringe group of pagans believed George was chosen by a spiritual being called "The Citrus Mother", and that's why nobody else could grow a tree from a clipping of George's tree. But the whole thing is just an excuse for a two-day drinking sesh, followed by a day of "recovery" by means of "the hair of the dog that bit you". If you know what I mean.

The Alanis and Node 93 Football Association – post_roster(“CE 39”)

Image

Our first World Cup and Cup of Harmony did not go that well, but that was admittedly better than we have first planned and perceived. After all, it was our very first, and we would have expected to get steamrolled, but Fate smiled for us a couple of times during the matches. All that aside, we are now ready and poised for the regional tournament that is the CE 39. This is, once again, our first time and season in this event, and while we do expect a couple of challenges along the way, we are also going to use whatever experience that we have in order to get those goals in – the only way is forward, after all! Perhaps hopefully, we can invite tourists and players alike to our fair nation!

As promised, for anyone who would like an idea to jump start their matchday one roleplay... a prompt:

Football is a relatively new "professional" option in Limey George, so many would argue that the country doesn't have a strong "football tradition".

Matchday one cutoff should take place roughly seven days and a few hours from now. Have at it.

.................. The Formation ..................

Feel free to pick a starting XI and formation. When in doubt, you may run with a 4-4-2 1-11. Plans are for the team to play pretty narrow - Irithoren doesn't have a lot of flat, grassy areas, so our league plays on fields that are as small as the laws about field dimensions allow - and adventurous and a little individualistic. There are five players to look out for: firstly, there's Delshad Sa'id, leading an unlucky El-Akhthar side, but he's the anchor that team needs - and the Jerboas need, probably. Delshad wasn't always in focus for the NT but he's more than earned it. Second, there's Tala Kawkab, for Al-Faiha, hoping to put that team on the map where the league is so dominated by clubs from Dhidiyah. Time will tell if she makes good on her potential, though. Third is Zeina Sabar, the star playmaker of the squad and the primary driving force of the attack. Fourth is Fares Hajar, who's worked his way up to the starting XI and then some. Fifth is Nour Qahwa: foreign scouts will hardly have seen her play which is a good thing for us - but then again, she's also barely played for Al-Soqur, and yet we're confident to say she's going to be a difference maker at some point. Up front it's all Sima Sujaa - judge, jury, and executioner.

.................. The Jersey ..................

We play in dark green with a light trim. Our away jersey is the reverse: the light colour for most of the kit but with a dark green trim, numbers, etcetera.

.................. The Country ..................

We're a tiny country on a rocky outcropping/cape with a tad under half a million souls.

Most of us live in a long, stretched out town along the coast, which also functions as our capital, named Dhidiyah. Think narrow paved streets, warm summer afternoons/evenings, pot plant gardens along rows of stucco houses, lots of yellowish tones, and plenty of cats that must be someone's but they're just vibing on the warm outdoor surfaces (OOC: 'lofi girl' aesthetics).

Geographically, the inland is used for growing mediterranean crops like olives (and some coffee and tea) on small-scale farms. The town of Tabuhsa - just outside Dhidiyah - works as a local marketplace for most of our agricultural goods.

We're laid-back, but with a competitive edge, much like 'parent nation' Ko-oren. Irithoren has taken the meritocratic elements but we kept our own 'village head'-system, so local issues are sorted on a very small scale under the 'most apt' (and usually quite old) village head. National issues are solved by a surprisingly modern (but tiny) cabinet under a prime minister (Zeina Nayla Fizairdah).

Our other towns include Qawit, smack dab in the middle of the country with a small industrial sector, and Zairdah, on the border to the mainland. Around Dhidiyah we don't just find Tabuhsa, but also Hurasan, which is a separate coastal town that just barely doesn't touch the capital.

We aligned ourselves with Ko-oren a while ago, but we recently intensified those ties, fearing interference by larger Esportivan nations (read: Tumbra invading the northlands).

.................. The League ..................

The league (Al-Dawri Al-Irithoreni Likurat Al-Qadam or Irithoreni Football League) is an amateur league that includes all ten clubs in Irithoren. Four from the capital of Dhidiyah, one each from satellite towns Hurasan and Tabuhsa, a further three from industrial centre Qawit, and one from border town Zairdah. The ten clubs of the Irithoreni League.

Recent history

The Starsian National Football Team is The 14 Stars's national squad in association soccer competitions for national associations across the entire multiverse world of soccer.
There have been alot of changes since their last appearance in the World Cup 97 run which made them known on the international stage with most importantly Kira Blade the best player in Starsian history no longer being an international causing a huge amount of outrage from fans and experts.

With the current last series of results the team has worked hard to establish itself as both a regional and a global powerhouse under the great leadership of Keira Walcott.
Curretly one generation is passing the torch to another and most recently the best player of the country Kira Blade announced her end as an international marking a historic moment and a great loss for the sport.
With 92 matches and 19 goals scored shes been at every important moment in the teams history, her father who was back then the coach already called it that he selected her for her skill not her name and she proved that.
Now with her gone the team has to pick up the pieces, Federico Zaratti a long time veteran has stepped up to take the leading role after being good friends with Kira for years.

With new talent emerging too the competition for a place in the national team has been more fierce then ever before with so many young talents seeking for a place within that glorious team.
Our team has a large group of players but still alot of them will never make their debut, for those chosen now either starts a new cycle of international football or perhaps its the beginning of their journey as international.

Tactical Set-Up

The Starsian side is a very skilled team with a very high team chemistry and morale combining it with their quick paced game they are an opponent for all teams to watch out for due to their offensive style.
They play in a 4-3-3 which through the match can be changed to various other formations suiting the game that they play however they are an offensive team loving to have possesion of the ball.
It is know the Starsian team loves game control, taking the initiative and play their best, they are more willing to play a great game of soccer rather then simply getting a good result.

Left Corner Taker: Joy Sol
Right Corner Taker: Joy Sol

Star players

Image

Grace Edwards
One of the many players of the new generation is Grace Edwards a defender but in modern style who can both join the attack and defend very well with her strong endurance.
Edwards started as a youngster in the youth teams and worked her way up to the first team both in the league and internationally only being held back by Sarah Nolan for many years being the preferred choice.
However these days Grace Edwards is a strong value in the starting line-up and shes getting tough competition from Eva Weber in this position making her able to keep playing her best games to keep her spot.

Image

Federico Zaratti
One of the very few players on the defense with long years of experience, Federico is the son of Gianna Zaratti who also played for our team and was a very good midfielder back in the old days.
Sadly Federico has seen the rise and fall of Starsian football and had to deal with an inexperienced team that has quality but not the right mentality and had to work its way up the ranks and the motivational ladder again.
Federico is a very skillled defender and most likely the best one currently around, his experience is the core of the defense and he is also the team's vice captain leading the defense and sharing his experience with younger defenders.

Image

Kai Schulz
Schulz is a striker with ups and downs, sometimes he plays like a genius and sometimes it just doesnt want to fall into place, Schulz could keep up with this for years but not anymore.
He is no longer the young promised talent he now is the seasoned striker, the first choice and has to deliver and if he doesnt he risks losing his spot to younger better strikers who are up and coming.
Schulz can be really good he has shown that time and time again but he has failed to reward himself so many times, he is a good player and a striker who can really shoot from any side but lacks consistency.
Now with a younger striker on the horizon who really worked hard in the U18 tournament he has to prove hes the best.

Image

Emily Davis

Goalkeeper Emily Davis is the personification of quality goalkeeping, she is calm and steadfast a reliable pillar of support for the entire team and a top class goalkeeper mentored by Calvin Princeton who is currently in his last active season.
Emily as a rookie ended up with Calvin, she was a rough diamond very talented but also very on her toes and tense because she wasn't confident and did not wanna mess up at all costs.
She learned overtime to be calm and confident and now is about the most calm and relaxed person on the team as she plays for Avidia United in the nation of Krytenia with whom she achieved two championships.
Shes by everyone known as the new main goalkeeper for years to come, shes still young and its expected that Emily Davis will play an important role in the development of the team aswell as in supporting her defenders.
Emily in the team is very appreciated, off the field she can be a bit of a goofball at times but she lights up the mood and brings a good atmosphere at all times making her with right one of the star players.

KANZLIAN ROSTER FOR CAMPIONATO ESPORTIVA

Nation Name: The Gracious State of Kanzlia

Trigram: KNZ

Demonym: Kanzlian

Nickname: The Exiles

Kanzlia, formally recognised as Gracious Kanzlian State, is an island democratic republic on the far north of Esportiva. The country is divided into 7 provinces. Its main island, Kalta, consists of nearly 85% of the country's population whilst the smaller island of Farioli makes up the rest. The seat of power in Kanzlia lies on its southernmost and largest port city of Szbedansk. It’s followed by the cities of Kotr, Tergtheim, and Ibsia. The country is well known for the cold.

The Kanzlian National Football Team (Also known as Voetbalvereniging Kanzlia) was founded in 1900 but Kanzlian Football, in its current pyramid, was only finalised in the 1990s. Prior to this, a double league system was utilised. Anyhow, football is by far the most popular sport in Kanzlia with stadiums jam-packed full in every match of the season. Kanzlia with its history of hardships and prolonged periods of misery has resulted in a deep connection between the sport and Kanzlian society. The culture of the sport is one of fiery passion but also with a noticeable aspect of humbleness. A pundit said that Kanzlians are the sorest of losers during the 90 minutes, but once the game ends they switch back to normal often with an optimistic mood regardless of the result.

The Kanzlian National Team went on a record 11-game unbeaten streak in Esportiva during the great famine (dubbed the Kanzlian Collapse) in the 1960s whilst being barred to play a game in Kanzlia. Hence how they got the nickname of “The Exiles”.

The VVK plays its official games in the Stadia Szbedansk, a relatively modern 53,280 seater stadium. Friendly games are often played in various stadiums but typically between the 45,000-seater Kotr Stadium and the 32,000-seater Marc Letos Stadium.

Manager: Vassilis v. Coevorden (48)

Preferred Tactic: 4-3-3

Style: +1

Vassilis van Coevorden, the father of the triple Coevordens (Ardentius, Reiner, and Sylverio) has managed the national team for 2 years now. His style of play seeks to create overloads in the opposition box by committing multiple players forward, regardless of opposition. His tempo is quick and always seeking for space to control the games tempo and move the pitch further towards the opposition.

During build-up Vassilis utilise the goalkeeper to help in the transition to pass the ball either to the dropped midfielder or the wingbacks ready to take off and exploit any available space they can get themselves into. During the attack, Vassilis utilise his wingers to invert and run into the box whilst the wingbacks take up the wings. This overload is intended to confuse and disorient the opposition. With this the oppositions half-spaces is left vulnerable to be exploited by the midfielders, and the wingers.

ONES TO WATCH

Jackie Stadt
Vassilis has confirmed that young prodigy Jackie Stadt will take over from stalwart keeper Zaouane Mido. The 24 year old keeper has been in relatively good form for VVS and a regular appearance in the Kanzlian National Team is something he deserves but rarely given a chance to. With Z. Mido's bad form the previous couple of games - Z. Mido and Vassilis van Coevorden has reached an agreement to bring Mido out of the roster for the Cup of Harmony. Giving a pristine opportunity for Jackie Stadt.

Christian Bagheria
The Tergtheim native had a breakout season the season prior. His tall and big physique is enough to scare forwards from challenging him in the air. His long legs allows him to be notorious for tackling faster players from the side. He’s still 22 so several aspects of his game, such as aggressiveness, still needs to be refined. But otherwise Bagheria deserves his sport in the starting lineup because of the indispensible defensive qualities and insurance he brings to the team.

Ardentius van Coevorden
The youngest of the Triple Coevordens, Ardentius in a matter of 3 games managed to claim Don Kaap’s usually secure starting position for 1899 Szbedansk. What makes Ardentius really unique is actually his superb offensive capabilities. Comfortable with the ball, and not shy to dribble past players to bring the ball into the midfield. He often find himself in the opposition box during a counter attack. Not to mention his stamina, its almost as if this kid have backup lungs! Though naturally with a defender finding himself constantly on the other side of the pitch - he needs to improve his game reading and make better decisions.
One other part of his game that stands out is his ability to predict opponents passes. During his debut in the Szbedansk Derby no less, he managed to intercept 7 passes in 20 minutes (including 2 through-balls!). He immediately became a fan favourite as a result and ganed his nickname of “de Onderschepper” or the interceptor. He has since earned a move to Tikariot's Baraldhur.

Evert van Selm
A bright spot in Armada Kotr’s disastrous season, Evert van Selm took upon himself to be the glue of the team. He scans the pitch often and his first touch is simply sublime. He often supports defenders who werent too comfortable with the ball and thanks to his reading of the game was always in a position where he can pass it to someone else. His vigour and passion allows him to remain consistent throughout the season but also throughout the 90 minutes. He runs as often as he does in the first minutes to stoppage time.

Sylverio van Coevorden
Another of the Triple Coevordens. Intially met intense criticism from the media for nepotism due to his inclusion in the national team roster by his father, he silenced his critics almost immediately. In his debut for Kanzlia he provided two assists, and 5 games in his international career he already have 5 goal contributions. He’s one who wouldnt back away from dribbiling past defenders but he always look for an option to pass if that’s the best option. It’s a mindset and game reading you wouldnt expect to find in a 22 year old. Blistering with pace he simply just outruns his man marker and giving him space is near-guaranteed to give him a chance at goal. His flair is also very noticeable, and drew a lot of criticism (from Armada fans) back home when he feinted a pass against Ron Tyke. Ron Tyke would turn so abruptly he tore his ACL and his injury forced him to retire. One part of the game he has to improve on is conserving his energy, Sylverio hasnt made a full 90 minute apperance in his past 10 games he appeared in. A testament to how much passion he plays but also proves that the 22-year-old still has a lot to learn.

THE TUMBRAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
The Black Eagles

Image

The Tumbran National Football Team is Tumbra's main representative in all association football competitions for national associations. Making its debut at the 87th World Cup Qualifiers, the team currently ranks 5th in the world. The team is controlled by the Tumbran Football Federation, which is also the governing body of football in Tumbra. Also known as the Black Eagles, or affectionately the Eagles, the team competes in the World Cup and its related competitions. The team also participates in the Campionato Esportiva, also sends teams to the Di Bradini Cup for Under-21s, and the Under-18 World Cup. The team have won the 51st edition of the former tournament and the 13th edition of the latter tournament; which has led to a keen emphasis on bleeding youth into the national team set-up early. The senior national team's best performance, meanwhile, has been with a Final appearance at the 95th edition of the World Cup. With a loyal travelling contingent of supporters known as the Black Army, the Tumbran national team's support will be on display throughout this tournament, with lots of tifos and loud cheers expected throughout matches.

The Manager
Michael Campbell, formerly of Straton and Tavistock Athletic, was given the job almost as a sacrificial lamb after Tumbra sacked Peter Gabriel ahead of the 95th World Cup cycle; he was always intended to be an interim while the Tumbran Football Federation waited for a highly-rated foreign manager to open up. That, or waited for the Federation to determine if the international football programme was still financially worth it after a disappointing group stage exit in the 94th World Cup. But Campbell — relentlessly referred to as an interim everywhere — pulled through; going unbeaten in the qualifiers and making a miracle run to the Final, after winning an actual coinflip to determine whether Tumbra or Brenecia progressed to the knockout stages. Though he wasn't able to win the World Cup, Campbell has been vested with considerably more resources; including an actual assistant manager (longtime friend and former Straton team-mate, and later manager, Michael Aitken), and plenty of other coaches.

In press conferences, Campbell will always play down Tumbra's chances; they are never the favourites. At most, the game will be evenly matched; he holds an almost superstitious belief that to publicly state that his team is the favourite is to court a near-instantaneous comeuppance. An adherent to the Tumbran school of defensive, counterattacking football, Campbell follows in former Tumbran national team manager Yuan Zilai's footsteps; but crucially, prefers to set-up with two midfielders in a flat three rather than deploying an attacking midfielder. He's been touted as a manager who can go far, but as implied above, Campbell always redirects praise; instead choosing to foster an underdog mentality within his team, and of himself.

Tactical Set-Up
Tumbra will usually set up in a 4-3-3 formation. The alternate formation, particularly when Tumbra deploys an attacking midfielder, is a 4-2-3-1. The team's general strategy is to sit back, soak up attacks, then break on the counter. Four-defender formations are seen as the gospel and orthodoxy in Tumbra; three or five-defender formations haven't really picked up steam in the country, only being resorted to in the midst of play.

In defence, Tumbran orthodoxy is to have a four-player defence; wingbacks in this system are expected to start attacks after the central defenders dispossess marauding attackers. The ideal Tumbran wingback is fast, able to pass, and float into midfield when out of possession to help regain possession; in practical terms, one wingback stays back while one floats into midfield. The central defenders are usually split into two; clean-shorts and dirty-shorts, with one focusing on distribution and the other on dispossession.

The midfield is the crux of Tumbran footballing philosophy, with the defensive midfielder being the most important position on the team. The midfield traditionally has three roles; destroyer, pacesetter and creator. Under Michael Campbell, this usually means a double pivot in midfield comprising of Harrison (a mainstay on the team) playing as the destroyer and one of the other two defensive midfielders playing alongside her; or two of Robertson, Harrington, and Leighton, who made waves at the Campionato, if a single pivot is utilised. In any case, the more advanced midfielder typically serves as the creator. On very rare occasions where Tumbra seeks to take control of the game for themselves do they play with an outright attacking midfielder; this shift away from the 4-2-3-1 has been the major innovation of the Michael Campbell era so far, and signals a declining reliance on the status of the purely attacking midfielder.

In attack, creative freedom is granted; though history has usually shined its brightest lights on goalscoring wingers. This usually privileges players who cut in on the wing to overload the box, with crosses a secondary option. Crosses may be delivered by either the wingback or the winger; the wingback is preferred. The ideal Tumbran forward is lithe and agile regardless of which side they play on; finishing ability is respected far more than individual flashes of brilliance, though unsurprisingly players with flair are remembered far better than those who aren't.

On a sliding scale between workhorses and technical finesse, Tumbrans as a whole lean towards the former, though obviously with exceptions. Gamesmanship, time-wasting and riling up the opposition are par for the course; but Tumbrans will never directly break any rules. Tumbrans are pretty naff at set-pieces; they prefer scoring from open play.

ELLIS FOOTBALL: THE HAPILOPPIAN TEAM
Full Nation Name: The Dominion of Hapilopper
Trigramme: HAP
Nickname: The Haps
Team Colors: Blue, Green and Black

Info:
To the shock of everyone, Ellis Football qualified for World Cup 97. It was a qualification that came out of the blue for everyone - not least of all was Dom Probst, head of the Hapilopper Football Association, Thom Perkins, acting head coach for Ellis Football and his assistant, Ernie Stevenson. It matters not that the Haps only scored one point in their group and got eliminated in the group stage; that is irrelevant. What matters is that the team qualified. And now, they'd like to think they're riding a huge wave of momentum on the way to the 39th Campionato Esportiva, the championship for Esportivan footballing teams. But there is some dissension under the surface, owing largely to the ultra-physical and violent style of play in the Hapiloppian domestic league, play that, on two occasions minutes apart just weeks before the first whistle blew to start the Campionato Esportiva, members of Ellis Football throwing punches at each other.

COACHING STAFF:
ACTING HEAD COACH: Thom Perkins
Following Ellis's death, HFA head Dom Probst announced that the national team will never again have a "head coach," but rather an "acting head coach." Officially, Nathan Ellis is still the head coach of Team Hapilopper, but leading the squad is Thom Perkins, who helped lead Hapiloppian football to the World Cup proper a few years ago. Perkins was seen as the best selection to lead Hapiloppian football in the future following his positive track record of bringing teams together - first in the Baptism of Fire many years ago, and then to qualifying for World Cups 90 and 91. Perkins will rely on a 4-2-3-1 formation for most of the competition.

ASSISTANT COACH: Ernie Stevenson
ASSISTANT MANAGER: Dennis Billett
GOALKEEPING COACH: Mark Tillett
TRAINER: Bill Rothstein
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR: Lyndon Auditor
PHYSIO: Tab Butler

Stadium:
Nathan Ellis Field at Capital Stadium, Hapilopper City, Hapilopper
Built: 1970 | Seating Capacity: 66,025 | Open-Air | Artificial Turf
Image

(Pictured: Capital Stadium in gridiron configuration)
Capital Stadium, Hapilopper's de facto national stadium, is the last of Hapilopper's classic cookie-cutter venues, used for a variety of applications, including the Hapilopper City Nationals baseball team, the Hapilopper National Baseball Team and is the home of Team Hapilopper. As is custom with cookie-cutter stadiums, the park is completely symmetrical and is surrounded by multiple decks of stands, typically filled with screaming fans when the home team is doing well. But its lifespan is coming to an end - crews are in the midst of constructing the new Nathan Ellis SuperStadium on the grounds of the Hapilopper National Exhibition, a 115,000-seat stadium meant to house football, gridiron and baseball. Hapiloppian fans have vowed to come to Capital Stadium in force for Team Hapilopper games. Typically, Hapiloppian fans, including the members of the "Traveling Thrashers" supporters group are among the wildest fans in sport, and promise to be exactly that for the World Cup. Expect to see fans dancing along to 1970s funk music, slamming drums as loudly as possible, waving their flags, and throwing streamers for every Hapiloppian goal.

#1 - LOU HYDE | Goalkeeper | Age: 27 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @louis_hyde | Club: United Hampton Cities
Style of Play: Sweeper Keeper | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Medium | Attitude: Brooding
The starting goalkeeper for the new Team Hapilopper squad is Louis Hyde, a dark, brooding figure that doesn't necessarily enjoy being around other people. He enjoys the company of his cat, Smokey, and the slow, mournful tunes he listens to on the radio, but aside from that, not much else. You won't see him at a party, and you won't see him slamming back brews with his teammates. Regardless, his teammates at United Hampton Cities think the world of him - primarily because he does his job well. He's there to stop goals, and he does it with great precision. He doesn't get too emotional and he doesn't let the matter at hand get to his head too much.

Image
#2 - HUNTLEY McCULLOUGH | Defenseman | Age: 27| Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @mccullough40 | Club: Kingsland Warriors
Style of Play: Defensive Back | Speed: Fast | Physicality: High | Attitude: Asshole
One of several veterans of Ellis Football, Huntley McCullough was constantly compared to a younger Nathan Ellis - which, depending on your point of view, could be either the nicest thing anyone could say about someone or the absolute worst. For the Kingsland Warriors, who love his physical, balls-to-the-wall style of play where he willingly puts himself in harm's way to stop a goalscoring effort, it's about the nicest thing. For fans of other teams and in other countries, it's not a very charitable statement about a ballplayer that they feel is just as likely to wage a holy war on the football field as he is to wage the kind of defense that normal football enthusiasts consider "acceptable."

Image
#3 - ARN MARCH | Defenseman | Age: 26 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @EnforcerMarch | Club: The Soldiers (Hapilopper City)
Style of Play: Defensive Enforcer | Speed: Medium-Fast | Physicality: Very High | Attitude: Asshole
If you saw Arnold March at Center Street Pub in Hapilopper City - a place he loves to frequent after matches, you'd think he was a 45-year old middle class father of three who enjoyed a cold beer or two - and in fact, many football fans say March is "like that uncle that loves to kick ass on the weekends." You wouldn't think he was the 25-year old "Enforcer" of the Soldiers squad, a physical and imposing character who has gained quite the attention in the last couple of years for his rough play. In most countries, his play - complete with a signature move called a "spinebuster" where he picks up a player on the opposing team, torques about 90 degrees to the left and drives them into the turf - would be called churlish at best, criminal at worst. But in Hapilopper, it's par for the course and almost to be expected in the wild and crazy world of Hapiloppian sport.

Image
#4 - SCOTT ROUNDTREE | Defenseman | Age: 23 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @RoundtreeScott | Club: Halsted Heat
Style of Play: Centerback | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Medium-High | Attitude: Intense
It has been observed among members of the Hapiloppian media that the starting defense of Team Hapilopper is dominated by some real charmers - Rod Cutt, Arnold March and Huntley McCullough. Assholes all. On the other hand, Scott Roundtree might be the biggest exception. Roundtree, the captain of the Halsted Heat squad, is said to be one of the nicer players in Hapiloppian football off the pitch. He involves himself in charity work, feeding the less fortunate and raising money to send children to college. On the field, however, Scott is a tenacious bulldog that can stop offensive efforts with his body and doesn't mind putting himself in harm's way to keep goals from being scored. In a famous incident last year against the West Hampton Sports Club, Roundtree dove in front of the ball in an effort to keep it from hitting the back of the net. Unfortunately, WHSC forward Tommy Hobbs didn't stop in time and kicked Roundtree right in the face. Rather than being pissed off about it, however, Roundtree laughed it off, and an image of a bloodied Roundtree chuckling about getting kicked in the face made newspapers all over Hapilopper.

Image
#05 - ROD CUTT | Defenseman | Age: 27 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: (Banned from twii.tur) | Club: Minortown SC
Style of Play: Defensive Back | Speed: Medium-Fast | Physicality: Violent | Attitude: Major Asshole
The first player hand-picked by the late Nathan Ellis to be a part of the Ellis Football squad, Rod Cutt was picked to be a part of Ellis Football because of his violent tendencies - and that's putting it mildly. Cutt kicked Mort Teeples in the balls in frustration, receiving a straight red and the ire of the fans in Garvinson. Then he threatened to fight the referee. Then he threatened to fight a few fans. But Nathan loved that kind of style. Nathan loved that kind of attitude and fire, telling friends that "a player like Roddy Cutt is a player that wins me football games, and that's why I brought him in." In Nathan's memory, the HFA has offered this roster slot to Cutt, and a modified version of "The Number of Violence," 05, rather than Nathan's 5, which has been retired in the wake of Ellis's death.

Image
#6 - TIM RADOMIA | Midfielder | Age: 25 | Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @timradomia30 | Club: Garvinson Trojans
Style of Play: Defensive Midfielder | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Only When Necessary | Attitude: Stoner
The good news is that Timmy Radomia, that chill midfielder with the long hair and the weird smile, is still a crucial part of the Hapiloppian midfield. The bad news is that he enjoys his green plants a tiny bit too much, still. Timmy was recently suspended by the Trojans for openly smoking a bong about a half hour before a Garvinson match against the Halsted Heat in front of the entire team, and smoking out the entire Garvinson clubhouse to the point where the entire team, its staff and two reporters got a pretty gnarly contact high as a result. Garvinson lost the match, 6-0, and Radomia was given a straight red in the first five minutes after running up to the referee with a really goofy smile on his face and going on a tangent about ham sandwiches, fried chicken and conservative politicians from the Garvinson area. We wish we were making this up.

Image
#7 - HERB WATTS | Midfielder | Age: 28 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @herbert-w17 | Club: Pinkerton City SC
Style of Play: Defensive Midfielder | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Medium-High | Attitude: Intense
Soccer players in Hapilopper tend to have some very interesting quirks about them. Some get a little too artistic about scoring goals. Others could be put on terrorism watch lists for their violent style of play, while others make their teammates uneasy with what they do. For Herbert Watts, the midfielder from Pinkerton, his quirk tends to involve daytime trash television. Watts loves those trashy talk shows that cover deep, intellectual subjects like "I'm leaving you for my cousin!" and "I discovered my wife is sleeping with a racist!" to the point where these shows - to the chagrin of his teammates - are aired in the Pinkerton clubhouse before practice every morning. Herbert is reportedly an active poster on message boards that discuss these daytime talk shows and wrote a passionate defense of these shows in the Pinkerton Daily Times - saying it was a guilty pleasure of many, but damn it, it's fun to watch, so let us have these shows.

Image
#8 - JARED KELCEY | Midfielder | Age: 25 | Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @jaredkelcey | Club: Capital City United
Style of Play: Offensive (in more than one way) Midfielder | Speed: Fast | Physicality: Heavy (to himself) | Attitude: Clumsy
Following the long tradition of Hapiloppian athletes doing dumb things to themselves, Jared Kelcey has been asked by Capital City United to please not drive himself to the stadium for the good of everyone. This follows an incident where Kelcey apparently got ticketed by Hapilopper City Police for driving the wrong way down a one-way street, going 75 in a 35, and nearly mowing down a church bus full of old ladies going to the community center for their weekly bingo game. This also follows a bizarre incident at Capital Stadium in a match against Peoria where Kelcey tried going for a header, he missed and face-planted the artificial turf with extreme prejudice. This also follows an incident where, not looking where he was going at Capital City's training facility, he smashed into a vending machine, breaking glass and sending snacks flying through the air. This guy might be a walking disaster area, folks, so tread lightly.

Image
#9 - TAD WINSLOW | Midfielder | Age: 27 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: (none) | Club: FC Surrey
Style of Play: Offensive Midfielder | Speed: Medium-Fast | Physicality: Low | Attitude: Creative
One of a growing breed of Hapiloppian midfielders who can score goals just as well as the strikers, Tad Winslow has been the premier goal scoring threat for FC Surrey, scoring 22 goals last season, oftentimes from some really unusual places and in unusual ways - and we're not just talking about the "bicycle kick past the keeper's head," we're talking "trick shot off the post" kind of goals. And, in truth, Winslow should probably be credited for 23 goals last season, but because of rules concerning own goals, perhaps his wildest trick shot goal (and the wildest trick shot goal probably ever) didn't count to him. In a match against Kingsland Warriors, Winslow fired one directly at Kingsland defenseman Huntley McCullough, striking him directly in the nuts. The ball bounced off McCullough's nuts and into the goal. McCullough doubled over in pain, and to add insult to injury, he got credited with an own goal. Winslow got a yellow card for his impetuosity.

Image
#10 - BEN FAIRCHILD | Forward | Age: 22 | Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @bennyfairchild | Club: Hap City Highway Patrol
Style of Play: Center Forward | Speed: Very Fast | Physicality: Low | Attitude: Professional
The ironic thing about Ben Fairchild playing for a team called the "Highway Patrol" - a team owned by the City Police Brotherhood Union - is that he tends to drive a tad bit too fast out on the road, not letting a little thing like a "speed limit" slow him down. Fairchild, who scored 31 goals for Highway Patrol last season, also racked up 31 speeding tickets in that same time - which he happily pays a few days later, even with an admonishment to "please slow your ass down." Fairchild nearly got himself out of one ticket back in February when he told a police officer that he was so happy he got pulled over, because that meant he'd score a goal in the next match. The officer thought that was funny, but told him to please, good god almighty damn, slow your ass down.

Image
#11 - STAN MCLAMB | Forward | Age: 26 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @mclamb11 | Club: Garvinson Trojans
Style of Play: Artistic Goal-Scoring | Speed: Fast | Physicality: Low | Attitude: Asshole
The thing about Stan McLamb is that he's great. He's a genius when it comes to scoring goals - scoring 37 for Garvinson last season. The problem with Stan McLamb is that he's great and he knows it. He wants you to know he's great. He has let his greatness come to his head, and he isn't shy about letting his teammates know that he is not only great, but he's better than anyone else. And that was, to be sure, a red flag for Nathan Ellis when he recruited McLamb. And that was, to be sure, a red flag when Thom Perkins and Ernie Stevenson saw Stan storm straight into the offices of the Hapilopper Football Association demanding his roster spot. But, you see, Nathan loved Stan. He thought he was one of the best goal-scoring ballplayers he had ever seen. And he loved his attitude. Stan lives and dies by "Win the whole fucking thing," which was Nathan's mantra, and he's going to make damn sure the team does just that.

Image
#21 - DANIEL BRADFORD | Defenseman | Age: 23 | Kicks: Ass | twii.tur: @dannybradford50 | Club: FC Buckridge
Style of Play: Centerback | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Like a pissed-off drunk at a honky tonk | Attitude: Redneck
You know, in most instances Daniel Bradford would be a starting defenseman on a Hapiloppian national team. But those "most instances" don't involve a pissed-off Ernie Stevenson fishing him out of a country and western bar having started a fistfight with some cowboy because Daniel had tried hooking up with his girl. And those "most instances" don't involve throwing a glass of whiskey at said cowboy because he said he was "one of them fancypants soccer players that can't line dance no good." What I guess we're saying is that Dan Bradford starts bar fights, he does stupid things, he's piss-poor at line dancing and he may or may not have told some lady to hit the floor when someone said it was time for a "hoedown," whatever the hell that means. Either way, his bad behavior cost him a starting spot on the Hapiloppian squad, but he might get it back if he does well enough.

#22 - TIM STONE | Defenseman | Age: 24 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @tim_stone | Club: United Hampton Cities
Style of Play: Defensive Back | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Medium | Attitude: Calm
So, what do we put in for a player that doesn't really get in trouble, isn't considered a "football terrorist" and doesn't do anything that puts him on any most wanted lists or watch lists? What do we do for a football player who doesn't really have a lot of hobbies outside of playing football? I mean, we could write that Tim Stone is a great defensive player who can stop a goalscoring effort with ease, but damn, that's boring. We were writing that shit years ago when we introduced you to the Baptism of Fire squad. And damn, I guess that means Timmy Stone is boring as shit. He plays good football, he plays good defense, but he doesn't get in trouble, he doesn't do anything embarrassing and he doesn't make a complete ass of himself. Maybe he should get himself into card trouble more often - it might get him a starting spot on the national team.

Image
#23 - DAVID COLT | Defenseman | Age: 25 | Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @coltman60 | Club: West Hampton Sports Club
Style of Play: Centerback | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Heavy | Attitude: Antisocial
When we go out to interview players, their coaches and some fans for these short profile snippets about members of the Hapiloppian team, usually a trend comes about. Certain people will talk about how a certain player is just the nicest guy, or the fiercest competitor, or the best dressed, or someone they might not want to ride with on the highway. When we asked people about David Colt, their responses were just about the same. "He doesn't have friends," one person said. "He sits at the end of the bar, drinks his beer, and walks away when someone sits next to him. He speaks in monosyllables. His idea of a good time is to stand off to the corner, drink a beer and avoid every single person around him." One teammate suggested it's because he has a miniscule tolerance for bullshit; while another suggested he got stuffed in a locker in school by some guy.

Image
#24 - PETER HARDY | Defenseman | Age: 30 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @pete_hardy99 | Club: The Soldiers (Hapilopper City)
Style of Play: Defensive Back | Speed: Medium-Slow | Physicality: Heavy | Attitude: Goofball
Last year, the HFA announced, to the bewilderment of many, that kazoos had been outlawed from every single stadium where one of their matches were taking place. When asked why, Dom Probst, the head of the HFA, said "those that know, know. Those that don't, don't need to know." It turns out that Peter Hardy, a kazoo expert (for some reason), had been playing the kazoo in the clubhouse for weeks before the start of games, when Dom Probst, apparently looking for players for the national team, entered the room - while Hardy was playing some children's tune for the sixth time in a row. One player asked Probst to step in. Probst reportedly told Hardy that if he didn't stop with the kazoo, he'd take it from his hands and "ram it so far up your ass you won't even know what hit you." Hardy did exactly that. According to some reports, he is plotting to have the Hapiloppian National Anthem played by a bunch of kazoo players before a Campionato Esportiva match.

Image
#31 - KYLE NICHOLSON | Midfielder | Age: 27 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @kyle_nick | Club: Washington FC
Style of Play: Offensive Midfielder | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Medium | Attitude: Redneck
Pickup truck enthusiast Kyle Nicholson was a surprising selection to the Hapiloppian football squad, likely because of the constantly-poor standard of play from Washington FC, constant bottom-dwellers in the HFA standings and the one team everyone points as as the biggest argument in favor of introducing promotion and relegation into Hapiloppian football. But the one high point on that team is Kyle Nicholson, who impresses fans and experts alike with his strong play. In a recent game against Soldiers, where Washington was trounced 7-0, Nicholson was seen as the only reason they didn't get shut out 10-0. Some have said he is "the only reason Washington wins any games at all" and "if he was on another team, he'd be on a first-place team." Away from the pitch, Nicholson enjoys going off-roading on his lifted pickup truck.

Image
#32 - COLIN FINLEY | Midfielder | Age: 29 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: (banned from twii.tur) | Club: Raceway FC
Style of Play: Hybrid Midfielder | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Heavy | Attitude: Drunk
You know, there is a such thing as too much of a good thing. Just ask Colin "Wild Dog" Finley, midfielder for Raceway Football Club in Buckridge, nicknamed not because of his wild standard of play, nor because of his tendency to visit the Laughing Dog Bar and Grill in nearby Kensington Town, but rather because of his love of Wild Dog, a form of cheap, fortified wine, also known as a "bum wine" - which you can get for $5 at the local liquor store or gas station. It's this love of Wild Dog that got him banned from multiple social media outlets a few months ago. As he got rip-roaringly drunk after a match, Finley let loose his opinions, which were a little too spicy for anyone's liking, and that got him kicked out. As for those opinions? We'll leave those out, and we'll let you look those up on your own time (and because I don't want to get DEAT'd for a roster post -Hap)

Image
#33 - RORY SCHUYLER | Midfielder | Age: 28 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @roaringrory | Club: West Hampton Sports Club
Style of Play: Hybrid Midfielder | Speed: Fast | Physicality: Heavy | Attitude: Asshole
Oh god, it's this guy. He exudes "douchebag" at every angle. He plays like a douchebag. He looks like a douchebag. He acts like a douchebag. He has hair like a douchebag. Three years in a row, he's won H-Sports Magazine "Guy You'd Like To Punch In The Face" award. Each of those years, he was nominated by one of his teammates. So, why does Rory Schuyler stay on the West Hampton Sports Club, and why did he get a spot on the national team? Because even if he's got the most punchable face in Hapiloppian sports, and even if Rod Cutt may physically introduce Rory's head to his ass by the time the Campionato Esportiva is over, he's still a damn fine midfielder, and still a crucial piece of any team's goalscoring effort, or any sort of defensive campaign that can stop a goal from being scored. That said, we think everyone is cheering for Rod to keel-haul this guy on live television.

Image
#34 - TRACY HUNTER | Midfielder | Age: 20 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @trace_hunter | Club: The Soldiers (Hapilopper City)
Style of Play: Offensive Midfielder | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Medium | Attitude: Professional
It's easy to spot Tracy Hunter outside of Capital Stadium in Hapilopper City. He's the guy that looked like he just stepped out of 1986. (Compared to most Hapiloppians, who look like they stepped out of 1996) That comes complete with mullet, aviator sunglasses, white suit jacket with the sleeves rolled up, black t-shirt underneath, blue acid-washed jeans and loafers with no socks, as he gets out of a 1980s Preston Skychief. It's also easy to spot Tracy Hunter inside Capital Stadium. He's the false nine for the team, scoring two dozen goals last year. He's one not getting in trouble, letting some of the hot dogs do that for him. The girls love him - and one recent magazine called Tracy "the sexiest schmuck in Hapiloppian soccer." He's on the bench, however, for the national team. Why? He's only 20 years old. Thom Perkins calls him "a starter for the future."

Image
#41 - TREVOR CRISP | Forward | Age: 26 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @crispy_trevor | Club: North Hampton FC
Style of Play: Center Forward | Speed: Fast | Physicality: Low | Attitude: Calm
Had Stan McLamb not stormed into the HFA offices demanding his spot as starting 11 back, Trevor Crisp would have had the role. Some say he's faster, some say he's better, many say he's less controversial. He scored 41 goals last year for North Hampton, including five in one match against Lake Sprague after their keeper, Fox Humbert, knocked his dumb ass out by faceplanting the goalpost for the third time that season. But what Crisp has going against him, as well as Ellis's love for McLamb, is his attitude. Many say he's not tough enough and he's not hungry enough to get past that hump that would make him the top striker in Hapiloppian football. Ernie Stevenson is reportedly not high on him either, largely because of that complacent attitude.

Image
#42 - CRAIG BLACKWOOD | Forward | Age: 24 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @thebeststriker | Club: United Hampton Cities
Style of Play: Artistic Goal Scorer | Speed: Fast | Physicality: Medium | Attitude: Obnoxious
Craig Blackwood calls himself the best goal scorer in all of Hapiloppian football. Everyone disagrees. He calls his celebrations the best in football. Everyone disagrees. He calls his goals the most beautiful in all of Hapiloppian football. Everyone disagrees. Sure, 29 goals is nothing to sniff at, but as Thom Perkins said, "he'd score 59 if he'd quit hot dogging all the time!" While Blackwood is seen as an annoying cuss who probably needs to get punched in the face a few times to get him to stop doing this shit, the reality is that he's got great potential as an international footballer, either in Hapilopper or beyond. And that's why Thom Perkins and Ernie Stevenson doesn't really have that much of a problem with him. While Trevor Crisp refuses to get better, Craig Blackwood wants to be the best, and that, to them, is a good thing.

Image
#60 - MANNY WAKEFIELD | Goalkeeper | Age: 25 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @manwake_60 | Club: Hapilopper City Highway Patrol
Style of Play: Sweeper Keeper | Speed: Slow | Physicality: Low | Attitude: Intense
Here's the thing about Manny Wakefield - he's a good guy, he does a lot of good in his community, but man, when you get him on the field, he becomes a bulldog. People have seen the fire in his eyes that demonstrates the intense focus he practices. And that focus pays off in spades, as Manny averages one goal allowed per 77 minutes of play - much lower than top-tier goalies from years past, but as "Funball" takes hold in Hapilopper, so too does increased goals. People are scoring goals like crazy, and that's had an impact on someone like Manny. Manny hates the fact that goal-scoring has gone up so much in Hapilopper, but he's going to have to make the most of it, or else. Away from the field, though, Manny enjoys a nice round of golf and talking to his friends about it - and when we say that, we mean he brags about hitting the green from the tee on the par-3 16th at Lake Eclipse Golf Club using his driver, which he says is justifiable because the hole was playing about 220.

Image
#90 - FOX HUMBERT | Goalkeeper | Age: 22 | Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @fox_humbert | Club: Lake Sprague FC
Style of Play: Save and Pray | Speed: Slow | Physicality: Against the goalpost? Very heavy | Attitude: Clumsy
We introduce you to the reason Hapiloppian television networks put microphones in the goalposts in HFA matches, and why the HFA tracks the number of times players slam into the goalposts. That statistic, a bit cruelly, is called the "Fox," and Humbert led the league in Foxes with eleven last year. This tends to happen, for whatever reason. And this keeps happening. Humbert will - with reckless abandon - slam himself into players, the goalpost, and even an errant referee or photographer on occasion. Perhaps most hilariously, in a game against Highway Patrol last season, Humbert - for reasons unknown to us all - chased after the ball towards the corner kick area, jumped up, and when he landed, had that corner kick flag go right up his rear end. Don't ask us why.

Hapilopper Football Association Headquarters, Hapilopper City
A few weeks before the start of Campionato Esportiva 39

Another cycle of international footballing was about to get started – and a cycle of football that couldn’t have come at a better time. In the weeks and months that followed Ellis Football’s disappointing departure from World Cup 97, the HFA’s league got going again, and while it played out in front of sell-out crowds and massive television audiences, the kind of football they got to see was not necessarily the kind of football Dom Probst wanted to see in his home country. Sure, there was your typical wild offense, where teams scored goals like crazy, and there was the kind of physicality that Hapiloppians craved every single match.

But there were also some truly ugly scenes on the pitch. A day before, Rod Cutt of Minortown Soccer Club and Dan Bradford of FC Buckridge tangled at midfield at Raceway Park in the Raceway District of Buckridge. The two got up and without warning, started throwing punches at each other. Their teammates entered swinging, and for fifteen minutes, a soccer match had descended into a bench-clearing brawl. A few hundred miles away, in the midst of the Soldiers/Highway Patrol rivalry game at Capital Stadium, Ben Fairchild, rushing in for a likely goal for Highway Patrol, was suddenly cheap-shotted by Arn March of Soldiers – where March laid down a forearm shiver on Fairchild’s head. The result was the same – Fairchild got up, threw a punch at March, and their teammates entered the fray. Some fans rushed the field and quickly realized they had made a colossal mistake, as either players, staff, or security dealt with them with extreme prejudice.

All of that bothered Dom significantly as he walked into his office the next morning. It bothered him on the drive over, as the sports radio talking heads were having a field day arguing over “excessive violence in the sports arena.” It pissed him off so much that he thought about calling in, but he figured the sports radio guys would know his number and make a big deal about the head of the Hapilopper Football Association was calling their show. So he turned off the radio and drove to the office in silence.

When he got into his office – that corner office with a fantastic view of the practice field and of the Sheffield Forest neighborhood around the building, he poured himself a cup of coffee and slumped into his chair, turning it to look out to the neighborhood. He wanted to think about his actions before he made any – and he felt he had to do something concerning those two bench-clearing brawls in Buckridge and Hapilopper City. Worse off, they involved four members of Ellis Football, the nation’s national team, whose staff were still riding a high of shockingly qualifying for World Cup 97.

Dom had barely put his coffee mug to his lips and had barely tasted the medium-roast coffee when his peace and quiet was distracted by two angry voices storming into his office. Dom looked over to see Thom Perkins and Ernie Stevenson, both visibly pissed off – and probably carrying a little more energy in the morning than Dom was used to. But Dom figured he knew why they were pissed off – and it had nothing to do with bad coffee.

“Bunch of horse shit… you gonna do anything about that, Probst?” Thom asked.

Dom sipped his coffee and placed it on his desk.

“Yeah, we’ve got to,” Dom responded. “National team players throwing hands. We can’t have that. We’ve got a tournament coming up. We’ve got the Campionato Esportiva, then we’ve got to prepare for the World Cup. We can not have any kind of dissension because it’s gonna fuck us.”

Dom turned around to look out at a row of townhomes next to the HFA offices. There were a group of children waiting for the school bus on this Monday morning. Some of the children were bickering with each other over lord knows what.

“Look at those kids,” Dom said. “They might be great friends, might be able to work together for a common goal but right now they’re at each other’s throats. And that’s not good for them. Just like it’s not good that we’ve got our kids on the national team wanting to kill each other. We’ve got to do something about it. And I’ve got just the idea. We’re doing it tomorrow.”

“Oh lord, please don’t let it be dinner, please don’t let it be dinner,” Ernie Stevenson quietly muttered to himself as he wiped his eyes.

“We’re all going out to dinner tomorrow night,” Dom said. “We’re going to Craven’s, we’re gonna get a steak and we’re gonna nip this shit in the bud.”

“Probst, I promised my wife we’d go out for a date night tomorrow night,” Ernie protested. “We haven’t had many chances to have a night to ourselves. We’ve got Drake and Taylor babysitting Nate and Patty, so we could have this night ourselves.”

“Well, change your plans,” Dom responded. “Because you’re going to mediate things between those boys.”

“God damn it… jackoff…” Ernie muttered.

“I was looking for a ‘Yes sir, Mr. Probst, immediately, sir,’ not a ‘God damn it,’ and certainly not a ‘jackoff.’” Dom snapped. “This is not negotiable.”

“Well, neither was date night,” Ernie responded. “I’ll let Wendy know.”

Craven’s Steakhouse, Hapilopper City
The next night

The thing is, Wendy was really looking forward to a night alone with Ernie. So, unsurprisingly, she didn’t take it well at all when Ernie let her know that their date night – literally the last chance for them to do something together before the Campionato Esportiva got into full gear – had been cancelled at the request of Dom Probst. Wendy’s first reaction was to call Dom up and approach the Hapilopper City record for most utterances of “motherfucker” in a 30 second span of time. Her second reaction was to call her brother-in-law, Drake Stevenson, and let him know that his and his wife, Taylor’s, services were not required.

Instead, Drake’s response was to ask where the dinner would be located. When he was told Craven’s, his reaction was a very evil and devious laugh, implying that he and Taylor would be up to no good.

Ernie figured something was up when he walked in and spotted Drake and Taylor at the bar. They turned around, looked at Ernie and gave a sinister look on their faces.

“You guys, don’t get me fired, whatever you do,” Ernie said. “Probst really wants this meeting to go smooth.”

“Oh, it will, don’t worry,” Drake said.

“So… who’s watching Kenny?” Ernie asked.

“Gave him to our parents for the evening,” Drake said. “I would have offered your wife look after him but when I talked to Wendy I think I might have heard a word other than ‘fucker’ and ‘asshole.’ Maybe. Kenny doesn’t need to be in that environment tonight.”

“Yeah, I might be on the hot seat,” Ernie said.

“Yeah, no shit you’re on the hot seat, you have a night out you defend that,” Taylor said. “You better make it up to Wendy.”

“I’ll try,” Ernie muttered. “But Probst is pissed at me too, apparently Wendy cussed him out on the phone and that’s my fault.”

“Well, can you blame her?” Taylor asked.

Ernie said nothing as he walked toward the table where he, Dom, Thom Perkins and four players – Rod Cutt, Dan Bradford, Arnold March and Ben Fairchild – would be discussing what exactly happened during Sunday’s games. While that was going on, Drake and Taylor were enjoying a couple of drinks together, and figured they’d also order dinner and then share a very expensive orange liquor dessert.

“Think we should put it on Probst’s tab?” Taylor asked.

Drake looked at his wife, grinned and chuckled.

“I got a better idea,” Drake said.

About twenty minutes later, Dom Probst, Thom Perkins and Ernie Stevenson were in the midst of an intense – and very serious – discussion with those four players about such topics as team brotherhood, togetherness and that sort of stuff. Ernie kept looking around nervously, wondering if his brother and sister-in-law were about to pull something really stupid – something that could jeopardize his own job as assistant coach of the Hapiloppian national team. He feared that if Drake and Taylor came out and did something to humiliate his boss, he’d be out of a job that night.

So he flinched when the entire Craven’s wait staff started clapping and marching towards their table. He flinched again when they started singing – something they almost never did, unless someone paid them a very pretty penny. And he flinched again when one of them had a cake.

“HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WE’RE SO GLAD YOU CAME, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FROM THE CRAVEN’S CREW!” the wait staff sang at the top of their lungs, off by a couple of keys, crowding themselves around Dom Probst.

When the head waiter put the cake and a nice, expensive birthday cocktail down in front of him, Dom’s eyes went wide – both at the fact that it wasn’t his birthday, and at the fact the cake read “WENDY SAYS HI!”

Dom looked up, and saw each of the four players were struggling to keep from bursting out laughing, while Thom Perkins had taken off his glasses and was turning beet red from laughing so hard. Ernie, meanwhile, was white as a sheet and was looking around to see that EVERYONE was looking at the table, and many had gotten their phones out to record the whole ludicrous spectacle – this, the finest steakhouse in Hapilopper City, and the waiters and waitresses were singing like it was some chintzy family restaurant.

The fact that people were pointing and staring, and the fact that everyone at the table were cracking up, only served to piss Dom off.

“First off, my birthday isn’t for five months, assholes,” Dom said quietly – with the kind of volume that indicated he was about to kill. “Second, Mr. Stevenson, was this your idea?”

Ernie, by now sweating bullets, pointed in the direction of the bar. Dom looked over to see Drake and Taylor Stevenson, pointing at Dom and waving.

Dom looked back at Ernie and the rest of the table, realized everyone was laughing and sat back in his chair to sulk. It wasn’t his idea of a good time, but he had been had – and a lot of it was his fault.

Tactics
Hahn is a classicalist who sticks to the essence of Veilfaltigian football embodying the possession style. Playing a straightforward 4-3-3 with a holding midfielder, it is a style which is defensively sound and solid while possessing the ammunition to be attacking when needed. In the national team, the role of the fullbacks is one of utmost importance. The Veilfaltigian fullbacks unlike those of other nations choose to hang back to prevent quick counter-attacks on the wings. The general approach of the team is slow buildup using the midfield engine while ensuring that this does not result in any unforeseen goals going against us.
The defenders tend to stick back including the fullbacks as they act as a surety to prevent any counterattacks. The midfield is a critical part as the holding midfielder forms the link between the players upfront and the defence. The midfield will often keep possession amongst themselves looking for an opening to distribute the ball too. In this style of play, we often see the midfield move the ball back to the defence in case of a lack of space or passing opportunities upfront. To facilitate the possession style, the role of the wingers is primarily to make runs on the wings creating space. Occasionally they will be joined by the fullbacks in offense however this is a rare and more desperate measure. The centre forward plays an important role in dropping back to link with the midfield on occasion playing one-twos and creating space for the wingers.

Roster for Campionato Esportiva XXXIX

What's not working?

This is a very open-ended question to be sure. "What's not working" can mean absolutely anything, especially when it comes to this team. Let's be slightly clearer: "why is a team that can consistently qualify to the World Cup unable to get out of regional group stages?"

The numbers absolutely speak for themselves in the worst way possible. Eshialand's last four cycles of regionals (spread across three regions because of rift shenanigans) had seen three group stage exits and, in their very first CE, barely slipping into the round of 16. The last time they had seen a quarterfinal? IAC XIV, which was about 650 years ago... although, that's in Belnegau time. In Eshian time that was eight years ago.

In eight years, they hadn't been able to recapture something that basically every other nation that qualifies for World Cups and consistently participate in regionals can do. So, let's ask this question again, what's not working?

This was a question that Kenny Morgan was ready to solve... by burning everything down. Gone would be the continuous Owls team and management that had existed since forever, it was time to completely overhaul everything that made the Owls the Owls... and make a fair few enemies on the way.

First international: Aut-Ves-Nat 1-3 Eshialand (BoF LXXV)
Best win: Eshialand 8-2 Rea San Vegas (WCQ XCV)
Worst loss: Valanora 8-1 Eshialand (AOCAF LXX), Milchama 8-1 Eshialand (AOCAF LXX)
Most goals for: Eshialand 8-2 Rea San Vegas (WCQ XCV)
Most goals against: Valanora 8-1 Eshialand (AOCAF LXX), Milchama 8-1 Eshialand (AOCAF LXX)
Highest-scoring match: Eshialand 8-2 Rea San Vegas (WCQ XCV)

Head Coach: Melissa CAREY (F, 37)
Formation: 4-3-2-1
The plan had always been for Mel to become an assistant coach once she was done with playing the game, but this sudden shift in the team's direction put her in the hot seat. Kenny Morgan handed over the reins of the new look Owls to her, and she wouldn't be the most prepared for this job... but she was fully ready to try anything.

The Roster (starting XI as of the first match in bold):

Rebuild

"Coach... with all due respect, can you repeat what you just said??? You sound like an absolute madman right now."
"Mel, I think it's quite simple, really... we need to rebuild from scratch. A few of the younger players can stay, but we need to reinvent ourselves. Find new talent. Do all the things we haven't been doing as a team."

Kenny Morgan seemed to have his plan for Campionato Esportiva XXXIX all set in stone, but it all just sounded a little... insane. Melissa Carey, the long-time captain of the team, knew that big changes had to be on the horizon, what with how old most of the old guard were getting by this point, but now? After they had finally gotten their first points in a World Cup Final? After spirits were higher than ever before? And why were this changes set to be so extreme?

"Coach, I'm not sure if you realize... we don't have a lot of talent coming up. It's not like we have a functioning domestic league right no--"

"Actually, we do! Haven't you heard? There's this new Lliga 0 that... may not be super official yet... but it's coming up okay? And there's a ton of young talent languishing down there who could never even dream of cracking into the NT because we haven't even had the chance to notice them yet! And that, right there, is the fun part."

"What fun part?"
"You get to scout the league and figure out who our new NT players are gonna be! I've got a shortlist of mostly younger players on the NT who can stick around and help out the newbies... the rest will all need to be replaced."
"What do you mean I get to scout them?"
"Oh, that's the even more fun part. You get to be the manager for the CE this time around! I'll let you manage things while I help you out from time to time if you need it."
"Wait, whatever happened to me being the assistant manager for a couple of years while--"
"Don't worry, I'll be back for the World Cup, where we unify the best of both teams into one squad... until then, I'm sure you'll do great!"

What has gotten into Coach's head... Mel thought, this idea of his is making him act more irresponsible than the king...

Indeed, Mel was put into a very tough position. There were 16 spots up for grabs on the NT, and she had to find "young talent", whatever Kenny meant by that, to replace them. Oh, and she still had to train them to be good NTers. All on her own. In the span of a couple months. How does anyone ever manage that?

Oh, and all that on top of the fact that she didn't even really believe that a change for this squad was even necessary, at least not to such a degree. Sure, Coach did say the squads would reunify for the World Cup, which supposedly meant this was just a trial run for the new look future... but how do you even do a job that you were never trained for and don't believe in?

Nevertheless, she pressed on, heading down to assorted Lliga 0 games -- which were mostly being held in small parks without much of an "audience" to speak of -- and seeing what this league had to offer... and to her surprise, there was actually a lot going on here that the average Eshian just wouldn't know about. She sure didn't know about it until Kenny told her to come watch... while assembling a team basically from scratch was never going to be the easiest task, at least there was a surprisingly large talent pool to pick from, so she wouldn't just be handing any average Joe or Jane an NT kit.

From there, the question would be preparing this ragtag group for CE competition and seeing if they were any good together... the latter part would only come with time, unfortunately, but at least she could start making sure things all meshed together. Gosh, was it really like this for Coach before the BoF? she thought, with a newfound appreciation of just how hard it is to build a soccer team from scratch.

Eshialand's first matchup of the CE would come against Macbon, and many were quite skeptical of this new approach the team was taking leading into the tournament. "There's a problem, there's an okay solution, but there are far better timings and approaches than this", Josh Seametzle had to say, continuing, "such a radical rewrite of all the rules of Eshian soccer is just throwing the tournament away... if Kenny Morgan wants to leave in the Group Stage again, this is a damn good way to ensure it."

In response to this criticism, the newly-minted Coach Carey had one thing to say: "sure, I'm pretty skeptical of what he wants too, and I'll be the first to admit that, but at the end of the day, he's proven time and time again that he's always the one who knows what's best for the team. He's two steps ahead of all of us, and I think that somehow, all of this is going to pay off. Give it time, and things will work out in the end. And even if they don't, even if we leave in the Group Stage again, it's not like we've lost anything. We've never done well in regionals anyway, and this way we get to train new talent.

"Sometimes, you just have to burn everything down to build yourself back up."

Playing Style
The sport of football has been played in some form or another for well over a century on the Isle, but rarely in what we might consider an "organised" manner. Only in the past half-century have things begun to resemble "professionalism" as seen in the rest of the multiverse, and it was only in the past twenty years or so that the sport embraced actual professionalism -- the tl;dr here is that allowing workers to be paid to "do sport" was taking efficient and capable workers out of the national production; not exactly a desirable course. It took a lot of persuasion (read: a direct order from the Most Esteemed Leader after his advisors had explained the concept of "soft power" and "sportswashing") to get Governors to allow "sport" to be considered "work conducive to the national production". But here we are.

Anyway, this history means that the Limey team is... not the best at those modern tactics like "false nines" and "inverted wingers", or a "high press", or "offside" or even "passing the ball". They're very much a team -- in the loosest sense of the word -- that operates largely as a... more like an army attacking enemy lines, I suppose?

There are largely two kinds of Limey player. I say largely because there are a few who break the mould, but we'll get to that. Effectively you have "runners" and "hitters". Runners are quick, and good dribblers of the ball. That's their strength. Hitters are big, strong fellas. They tend to be good at winning the ball in both aerial and ground duels, and can hit the ball pretty hard. Good for making clearances. Would be good for long passing too, if they were to embrace the concept of the pass, and not consider it some sort of cowardly act.

Generally, the Limey approach is to have a hitter up front (normally at centre forward), and two more at the back (fullbacks; but not as you're probably thinking, I'll explain later). Pretty much everyone else is normally a runner. Usually. The national team, however, is blessed. They have a rare third and fourth type of player. The third type is what locals call a "lumberjack". In other countries, you might call them a "hatchet man" or an "enforcer". Basically they're kind of like smaller hitters who roam around and clear the way for runners, I suppose? Technically, this means they commit a lot of "fouls", but Limey football is proper football. Where men are men and opposition players are afraid. There are four lumberjacks in the Limey squad, since the gaffer expects refereeing to be "tougher", and thus means he'll have to swap them out often. These players are denoted with "(L)" in the squad list.

The fourth type of player is what is considered an "all-rounder"; and the Limey League has seen few of them. Right now there is only really one: namely, the captain, Erick Morrison. He's a reasonably big, deceptively strong fella, but also pretty quick and good at dribbling. He's also not bad at this "passing" the gaffer keeps talking about. The rest of the team are still catching up on that, though. Erick often just unleashes a thunderbastard or two-foots an opponent just to make sure everyone knows he's not a coward or some fancy Dan foreigner playing some namby-pamby frilly nonsense football. A proper Limey bloke wouldn't want people to think he's not a proper Limey bloke, after all.

The Manager
The thing about Limey people is that they know their limits. His Georgeousness has therefore hired the best football mind (that his people could entice to the Isle of Albion) to manage and coach the national team. That mind is Abel Martí. The Aquilliano coach enjoyed a reasonably good playing career of his own, playing as a defender and later defensive midfielder for no fewer than twelve teams in his twenty-three year career. In fact, he ended his time as a player on the Isle of Albion, playing his final game alongside Babatunde Warrington, no less, at Georgstead Albion some fifteen years ago. In the time since, he has coached at six different clubs in three different nations. "Football is different in every country, and now I bring the best parts of them all to Limey George," he says.

Martí is fairly well known on the Isle as a no-nonsense defensive player in his day, but also for having a different edge to his play. He has been quoted as referring to his "clearances that always seem to fall to a teammate" (which is what the local media call his long passes; can't say otherwise, that would be accusing him of cowardice) as "the fruit of practice" and "the lime of my football". His attempts to teach his players to do this reliably are beginning to bear fruit -- "if you clear it toward the wings the defenders are less likely to get it", he tells them -- but the poor standard of education on the Isle, combined with people being very set in their ways after following generations of their forefathers doing the exact same... he faces an uphill battle.

All that aside, the Limey team play what Martí calls the "downhill" formation, or the 5-3-2. But to most of you, this would actually be a 2-3-5: 2 defenders (usually "full backs", but sometimes there is a "hybrid back" who can play further forward sometimes), three midfielders (usually a "half back" in the middle and two "half wings", one on either side; a "full half" is a player who can do either role), and five forwards (two "wings", two "inside forwards", and a "centre forward"; though a forward can usually play the role adjacent to his own if needed). Some of you will recognise this as an old tactical system used in several countries, but it's still fairly novel in Limey George, and part of the reason Martí got the job (he's a "modern foreign" manager, you see).

The Squad
You'll notice the numbering system is a little strange here. Historically, in Limey George, players were not given numbers at first, and simply had different coloured caps to distinguish the goalkeeper from the rest of his team. Foreign influence encouraged the use of shirt numbers, and ultimately squad numbers, but these conventions developed differently to most other nations due to how teams were typically written out. Because teams are traditionally written out forwards first, going from left to right, the left wing position became associated with number 1. Goalkeepers, the number 11.

This quirk remained, even with the advent of squad numbers, with goalkeepers preferring a multiple of eleven wherever possible. Perhaps most familiar to outsiders is that the number seven shirt typically goes to a talismanic player. Usually this is the team's "halfback", who is ultimately the primary "playmaker" -- much like most nations' "number ten". Conversely, the centre forward, who is often the focus of attacks, is typically number three, rather than the more familiar number nine in most nations, while the numbers nine and ten are typically the starting defenders (or "fullbacks") rather than attacking players as they would be in most countries.

Kanzlian National Team tours around Limey George, buys ale for locals
SPORTS

JAMESHURST – As per tradition now, the Kanzlian National Team are visiting various sites in their camp, Jameshurst.

The Kanzlian National Team has caught the eyes of locals on break as the large group tours around the city by the sea. Most of their interest lies in the very large industrial port of the city, which somewhat surprised local administrators. The port manager was more than happy to tour the The Exiles around the facilities and even gave the team a small commemorative silver plaque as a gift.

Their next stop came a little further out of the city to the massive farm fields owned by His Limeyness himself. A local farmer was willing to pause his labourious work to guide the Kanzlian team around His Limeyness property of farmland. Some players were then photographed attempting to use a sickle. The Kanzlian National Team gifted the local farmer several gifts from Kanzlia.

The last stop for the Kanzlian National Team for the day is back to the city, where the players ate at a small local pub before buying the pubs owners all day stock of ale to be distributed free to all its patrons. The scene was rather crowded as hoards of Limeymen flock to the pub anticipating free ale as if by command of His Limeyness. The players had to be escorted outside for safety, and returned back into their hotel rooms.

KATZEBURGIAN NATIONAL TEAM

The Blue Cats

Style Modifier: +3

Image

The Blue Cats are the national representatives of Katzeburg, which participated in its first ever international competition with BOF 84, where the side made a run to the semi-finals. The team is nicknamed after an incredibly rare breed of the country's national animal, the cat, which was long-rumored to exist in small numbers in the Campbellnia National Park along the country's north-east coast. While Katzeburg is only a young nation, football has quickly picked up pace as the most popular sports on its shores. Initial hotspots of the sport were predominantly in the more industrial north of the nation, encompassing the nation's central capital Katzestadt, its heavy industrial city of Inverhaven, and the north-eastern city of Axmund.

The country's start-up national league, the Katzeburgian National League, has recently completed its first season, but not without controversy - as KFF chairman Brendan Kerr was forced to resign from his role at the start of the World Cup qualification process after tapes emerged of him abusing his role as MP for Wolfenholm North. Recorded threatening to cut-off towns who were interested in joining the league from its third season onwards from the currently in progress North Katzeburgian Railway, Kerr stepped down and the KFF is currently looking for a replacement chair - but the off-field scandal derailed the side's run at the qualifiers, where the team sat in third for a large chunk of the group only to fall off in the final matchdays to end in fifth.

The side did have a much better showing in the post qualifying Cup of Harmony over in Banija - finishing top of their group undefeated and securing overall top seed, before falling to eventual champions HUElavia 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Manager Becka Haberkorn has selected a squad mostly built off the successful run in the Cup of Harmony, but the side will be without Owen Levitt, the first ever Katzeburgian national captain, who retired from international football after the side's run in Banija with 23 caps and two huge national goals against his name.

Enigmatic midfielder Tilman Cummings has also been left out of the squad in favour of young Axmund City midfielder Sydnei Eason, with Haberkorn opting to bring in some younger faces to help them gain experience in the national set-up.

The armband as a result has gone to Katzestadt AFC keeper Ry Whinery, who has been an ever-present for the national side during its young life to date - with 32 caps out of a possible 33. However, with just two clean sheets to her name, it's clear the side has some defensive work to do and the appointment will hopefully encourage a more in-control voice from the goalmouth.

Drake Wruck, the Katzestadt Rovers forward who led the domestic league scoring charts last season, is the side's go-to player whenever they are in a tight spot and his goal-scoring records are nothing to scoff at either - with 50 goals across just 59 games for club and country to date, including 30 for the Blue Cats.

Meanwhile Axmund City midfielder Elmer Spears is a potential future superstar for the national side, securing his spot in the start XI after a good showing in Banija - At just 17 years old, he is the youngest of the Katzeburgian line-up and one of their main-stays to date, with 29 caps already under his belt.

THE COLONY OF THE FHULGHAMOUS PENINSULA
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula (Full-Gah-Moose) was first established on 6 December 2008, when Fleftic explorers landed on what was then a previously undiscovered continent. These explorers landed on a large peninsula that they named Fhulghamous because of its rich and lush green forests. One of the explorers then fell into an old mine shaft while exploring the peninsula and discovered that the entire peninsula was lying on top of one of the biggest diamond deposits ever discovered by mankind. Once the explorers announced their discovery to the Fleftic government, the Democratic Republic Army Corps of Engineers was quickly dispatched to help speed up the establishment of the colony by helping in constructing settlements and assisting in constructing mining facilities to extract the diamonds within the land.

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula was officially established as a colony of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft on 6 September 2010 following the signing of Democratic Republic Act No. 2340. The colony's capital would be Port Thimpodopoulos, named after Sergeant Major Pythagoras Thimpodopoulos of the Army Corps of Engineers, who tragically died of a heart attack during the construction of the settlement that would eventually bear his name. Today, Port Thimpodopoulos has a population of ten million, accounting for just under half of the total population of the colony. Other cities in the colony were Besanza, Tadoki, Haritzaga City and Thereisnogodabad, home of Multiverse Premier League club Thereisnogodistan FC.

The colony is under the leadership of Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano, brother of Minister of Colonial Affairs Demetrios Kulbano. His rule saw the Fhulghamous Peninsula's ascent to being one of the most economically-productive colonies of the Democratic Republic, but due to the colony's distance from the mainland Governor Kulbano is slowly beginning to treat the colony as his own personal fiefdom. This was one of the reasons why he had decided to send forth a petition to send a national team to the Di Bradini Cup, the Multiverse's top under-21 football competition. Unfortunately due to some last-minute troubles, the Fhulghamous Peninsula's team was not allowed entry into the Di Bradini Cup, leaving many people in the colony a bit unfulfilled. But when another chance to send forth a national team revealed itself, Governor Kulbano was quick to submit his team's entry, and this time he made sure that the wouldn't miss out on another chance at participating in an international competition.

Fading Starlight part 1

As the tournament was up and coming the mood around the Starsian team was a disaster to call it cautiously, a storm of criticism had hit coach Keira Walcott when she announced her squad for the upcoming tournament.
Kira Blade the leader of this team the veteran and the leading example for all current female players aspiring to make it big one day....she was simply dropped from the squad and this had led to the biggest outrage among players and fans in years.
Many players on the team especially older ones openly criticized the decision and called the coach insane, stupid and a traitor among other things and this had led to the coach working seperately from her team for the time being.

Federico Zaratti who had been chosen as new captain was the only one who surprisingly to everyone openly sided with coach Walcott understanding why she had made the decision even if it did hurt him very deeply.
He did the press conference before the first match against Kamijiro Federico Zaratti was the only one besides assistant coach Christine Dunne who were attending the press conference with all players simply boycotting the press conference.
Most press would be shocked to only see the captain and assistant coach, this raised serious questions about the teams state and how they would go out there tomorrow in the match as the first person asked a question.

Interviewer: ''Federico, its been clear there has been alot of anger around Kira Blade's disappearance from the squad, what is your opinion on her missing prescence here today and in the tournament?''

Federico Zaratti: ''Good question, most of my teammates dont think about it this way but.....look at it like this, i feel like this goes beyond the fact about Kira being an older player that isn't why she is dropped i think.
But with Cascade coming off their worst season and her preformance also dropping this season, she does not have the best momentum for an international tournament and after our most successful campaign in history......putting her on the field here might even make it worse and make Kira deeply unhappy as i know her a pretty long time.
I think coach Walcott wishes to protect Kira against herself rather then really wanting her off the team.''

Interviewer: ''But why wouldn't she make this clear? that it might be only temporary?''

Federico Zaratti: ''I am not sure and even my guess here is just an assumption, but the press does a good job in taking things massively out of context too which may have fueled the existing anger even more.
I believe that our coach will make the right calls, she has brought us this far why would she try to undo that you tell me.''

Interviewer: ''Yeah i wouldnt know either sir, but you have a match tomorrow....is the team ready to go out there and is the team really on the same page or is there any form of division within the team currently.''

Federico Zaratti: ''As much as our personal views have shown we are professional players, tomorrow we will put those emotions aside for 90 minutes and play the game like we always do and i think this tournament has gained a new purpose.
I personally want to play the best tournament i can, because even though shes not with us i want Kira to be proud of her team and be able to watch us with a smile knowing that we will continue to play our best while not forgetting her.''

Interviewer: ''That is a nice commitment, there are quite a few new faces around too such as Clara Perez, Alena Hendricks and Oscar Buster who all are new to this whole stage of playing how do you prepare them in this chaos?''

Federico Zaratti: ''Well for them it is important to learn and to be ready to come on any time, especially for Alena its pretty massive given her young age but despite everything the veterans on the team have been helping her out greatly.
We are always a team and this tournament is a team effort and as the new captain of the Starsian national soccer team i will do everything that i can to bring the best out of every player on the team no matter their role.''

Interviewer: ''Thats nice to hear, good luck tomorrow and thanks for having us.''

The team meanwhile was pretty upset you had two seperate groups...one that hated playing without Kira and wanted her back at all costs and even werent sure if they wanted to play this way with Kira gone from the team.
Others like Federico understood the coach but were also hurt but placed the team above their personal struggle....tomorrow would be pretty much a judgement day for the national team winning or losing would define the teams future mood.

Meanwhile back in The 14 Stars Southern District

In an amateur soccer club a man walked into the office of the chairman, he would find the chairman sitting in his chair watching the TV.....on the TV was a soccer game in bad quality footage as the old man sighed.
It was footage from the 1973/1974 season....the last season Columbia really on its own feet became national champions....the chairman had been a young teenager when it happened and had seen all his great heroes shine that year such as Nigel Moreno, Jonathan Kenville and many more who belonged to Columbia's old stars and now he sat here as chairman of Columbia....a poor amateur club trying desperately to stay alive despite being the recordholder for most national titles still as he looked at the game.
It was Columbia vs Nordere Lande a classic two bitter rivals and both always playing their hearts out, he finally noticed the man standing in the room as he paused the video looking at the younger man as he spoke.

Chairman: ''Richard...what do you need?''

Richard: ''Crowley Sir...why do you always watch these old matches from the 1960s and 1970s.....they are times long gone and we live in 2040 now....we cant stay in the past forever we have to move forward with our club too....''

Crowley: ''Move forward? soccer has moved forward leaving us in the dust.....these are all players i admired some of them were young and full of dreams...others were veterans in the twilight of their career seeking the last glory.
Every single one of them has their own story and their success is something that should not be forgotten....they were our last generation of national level players and when i look at our first team now......i just get sad.

They're just the average joe who happens to have a bit of a feeling to kick a ball but nothing more then that there is no technique, no understanding no nothing they dont have the slightest clue about soccer.
They play their game and drink a cold beer after because they had a fun day....but is that what we are as record holder for most national titles? a community club with people in their 30s and 40s in the 1st team? the old guys would be ashamed to see it.''

Richard: ''I understand your emotions sir but back then our leaders agreed with Phoenix taking over the professional wing because we simply did not have the funds to compete and neither did Nordere Lande as they gave it up to Blizzard.
Im not saing we have a good team now but......we cant do anything about it sir we do not have the means to compete, please forget about those days as they will never come back no matter what you try you will always be chasing an illusion.''

Crowley: ''We had great players back in those days........young people just dont get it these days do they? anyway what did you want to ask.''

Richard: ''I wanted to say that there is a certain guest watching the match between the Columbia 1st team and Hayville thats attracting quite a bit of attention....I dont think theyre from around here i've never seen them before.''

Crowley: ''Ill come along with you just give a moment.''

Once crowley had found his walking cane they would go outside where Crowley saw his amateur side play a garbage game even behind 2 goals behind at this point against a team they would usually easily beat.
But around one person a group of people had formed as she smiled softly as she signed some autographs and too pictures with people who seemed to be pretty excited about her arrival or atleast her prescence watching this game.
Richard approached the woman who was in her mid 30s visibly with the chairman on his side following as he asked.

Richard: ''Pardon me ma'am who are you? you seem to have quite the attention from the people here to the point it distracts from the game.''

the woman just waved it away smiling

Jenna Samford: ''Oh did i? oopsie i guess? i had nothing to do during this international break so i guessed i would travel around the country visiting some smaller clubs here and there and a club as famous as this one i couldn't skip on.
I'm Jenna Samford, im a professional player for Lunar Prime.''

Richard: ''You're a pro? we havent seen one of those around for quite a while even as spectators........what makes you come here?''

Jenna Samford: ''This club's incredible history, i never had the time to travel due to my old club playing a higher level and often internationally but now i got more time to enjoy watching the game rather then being in it.
You guys got alot of work to do on that team but i saw they're having a blast out there which is important.''

Crowley: ''You're speaking a correct word there young lady, but as much as this club has a history its nowhere near what it was.....what convinced you to visit us here to watch a match very much below your standard?''

Jenna Samford: ''Columbia's story is quite sad yeah but i believe it wont end anytime soon either as those guys out there play with their heart and have loyalty to this club....thats something you cant buy you must know.
I like that kind of honest football....transferring to Lunar Prime a smaller club showed me how much more fun playing with friends is and having a club where everyone knows everyone and i see that same thing here.''

Crowley: ''Sometimes i wish our club had been still among the large teams however...it was not meant to be perhaps.''

Jenna Samford: ''Who says so? you make your teams direction and no one else and no im not saying the road will be easy but there is certainly a way to improve and become better as club and a team, why dont we stay in touch i might be able to help out as i know how things work in the professional business if its really your goal to get back there.
I would invite you guys for a friendly but.....i dont think sending them home with 10-0 is good for motivation....''

Crowley: ''That would be very kind of you, i always wanted to bring back Columbia even to just a fraction of its former quality and while it may not happen during my lifetime....i hope it one day will happen.
As much as we respect Phoenix we gave everything up for them to become big and now we are this......but we will stay in touch for sure and i will follow the remainder of your career with great interest young lady.''

SYLESTONE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

Campionato Esportiva 38

Image

Image

Located in the far east of Esportiva, Sylestone is an equatorial nation home to roughly 30 million residents and while the vast, vast majority are humans, Sentients and even a small cluster of elves live on specific areas of the island, which has a size of roughly 700,000 kilometres squared. For the very first time in the nation’s history, though, Mytanar football manager Mojmir Anac’s squad to the 34th Campionato Esportiva and following World Cup Qualifiers - marking the return of international football for Sylestone in over half a decade - was composed of both Sentients as well as humans. In ages past, managers would prefer to not mix the two races out of fear for how that would go and with the Sentient sides almost always receiving the opportunity to play in tournaments while the humans sat in front of their televisions and watches, the vast majority of the Sylestonean population began to become distressed about this obvious favouritism. In fact, aside from the one Campionato Esportiva in the Licentian Isles that saw the human side capitulate to one point from three matches, they never actually received an official go.

But upon the heralded return of Sylestone to football and football to Sylestone, the appointment of Mojmir Anac changed all of that. Although a match between a mixed XI against Quebec and Shingoryeo had occurred the year before as part of a friendly series containing some of the multiverse’s biggest names, last year’s 34th Campionato Esportiva marked the very first time the two races shared the same half of a football field in an official game, or larger tournament. Although a mini-cup between the Sentients, Evermark, Tikariot and Quebec and Shingoryeo in Chamberley that saw the hosts’ only points come in a 2-2 draw with Evermark, results ever since have been the exact opposite of disappointing, and culminated in Anac being nominated as one of five nominees for International Manager of the Year in one Testiculos and even more importantly, saw Sylestone qualify for their first World Cup.

In fact, aside from Sylestone’s first foray into the World Cup three years ago in Græntfjall (RIP) and Kelssek, there hasn’t been a single tournament where Mojmir Anac has not impressed. His first tournament with the Sentients was the 34th Campionato Esportiva four years ago, where the team’s only two losses came against eventual champions Tumbra - once in the group stage and a second time in the knockouts after Sylestone had pulled off a massive upset by knocking off Brenecia following an 8-2 triumph over Macbon. The following World Cup Qualifiers are technically Sylestone’s best ever, recording 44 points in 22 games with a single digit in the goals conceded column… until Huayramarca took over Chamberley by storm in what ended up as an 8-4 shellacking over two playoff legs. However, two years later and backed by a fourth place finish in a home Campionato Esportiva alongside another strong World Cup Qualifying campaign, Anac’s side were not about to make the same mistake against Nyowani Kitara. Instead of mimicking their opponents style of football, they held their own as Riley Strathfield’s second half goal proved the difference in Græntfjall, sending the Sentients through to their first World Cup just three years after their return to the international scene.

After four wildly successful campaigns across the regional and multiversal levels, it was about time Mojmir Anac suffered his first failure. And even in this case, it’s still a tournament that ultimately garnered more praise than criticism, particularly internationally. Although they were out after their opening two fixtures, a pair of 1-0 hard fought 1-0 losses to Ko-oren and Eura were hardly anything to laugh about - although the better team won both encounters, either result could have swung the other way and no one would have batted an eye. It was the matchday three loss to the hosts that really hurt, the Sentients conceding six and even with a team composed primarily of second string players, that kind of result still hurts on the big stage.

But two years later, Anac would correct his wrongs. In front of a packed house in Chamberley for the country’s first ever home World Cup, the Sentients would once again face Ko-oren on matchday one and impressively, turn the result from two years before on its head as they walked away with their first ever three points on the biggest stage of all. Although a 3-0 loss to Mertagne in Pesfield complicated things, a hard fought 1-0 triumph over Baggieland would seal a round of 16 berth for the Sentients and send the entire nation into a frenzy.

It would only get wilder, too, when Abigail Jones cemented herself as a fan favourite with a delicate near post finish in the 28th minute to score the only legal goal of the game as Sylestone’s widely reputed back line got the job done the only way they knew how to. The final eight, with just Tumbra in the way of the semifinals and a genuine shot at the title.

Yeah, they couldn’t do it. The main culprits of Sylestone’s lack of success on the regional stage struck again, defeating the hosts 1-0 in a contest between Esportiva’s two best football teams, and two of the best defensive outfits in the modern world.

Then, the search for Mojmir Anac’s inaugural trophy with the Sentients has continued as the side has fallen in both the Campionato Esportiva final to Fhulghamous Peninsula and then in the International Confederations Cup final to Squornshelan Remnant States - a side Sylestone actually beat earlier in the tournament before falling when it mattered most. And so the wait for a trophy would continue, all the way to World Cup 96 as the chance to lift the holy grail of football rose again.

Needing to participate in a qualifying stage for the first time in four years, there were no signs of struggle as the Sentients smashed and bashed their way through the group, winning their first six games of twelve to put them clear and despite away draws to Zenic, Raspotochje and the Commonwealth of Baker Park in the second half, a thirty point haul from just twelve games saw Anac’s side comfortably qualify for the World Cup itself for the third consecutive time, this one being an all-Anaian affair held in Mertagne and Huayramarca. Drawn into a tricky group with nations with plenty of history in Kelssek and Audioslavia alongside plucky regionmates Josifovo, who were making their debut on the big stage after also blitzing their qualifying group, maintaining that unbeaten run would be incredibly tricky - in fact, there was a very real chance the Sentients would flunk out of the groups.

They made the semifinals, losing to Kelssek - a side from their very group that they drew with earlier in the tournament. And then, in 97, Kelssek would once again eliminate the Sentients, this time in the round of 32 after one of the cruellest draws imaginable that saw four members of the top ten in the world pitted against each other… all to play world number one Valanora in a quarterfinal they’d surely lose. So yep, still no trophy. So much success under Mojmir Anac, and nothing to show for it…

Nickname: The Sentients
Formation: 4-4-1-1 → 4-2-3-1 or 5-4-1

MANAGER

Mojmir Anac Image (M, 44)
He’s a cult hero in Sylestone, and he fully deserves every skerrick of praise he has received. Not even a year into coaching, to have already been nominated as a candidate for the International Manager of the Year is truly spectacular, and in reality, he’s only just getting started. A former centre back with Olympia Thessia, Anac has already built a reputation for coaching defensive-minded football, with a strong preference for letting opponents dominate and then attacking them on the counter, giving up possession but certainly not giving up goals. Originally, Anac was employed by the Sylestonean Football Association (SFA) to attempt to unify the two races but with the nation’s human footballers beginning to outshine their counterparts from the Sentient city of Kirkham, that’s becoming less and less of a problem each and every day. Anac will push his players to their limits and demand lots of them but at the end of the day, he used to be a player as well, and knows just how hard that can be day in, day out.

Tactics
Markova elects to field a less attacking formation, with only one central striker.

Markova prefers fast, flowing football, so quick passes and counterattacks are part and parcel of her game. Do expect more inexperienced or tired players to give the ball away more often. The team relies on the wingers and fullbacks to control the wider parts of the pitch, especially since the wingers are more likely to cross the ball into the box than drive it into the center. The wingers tend to fall back to receive the ball rather than stay out in the opponent's third for high balls. The midfield is fluid and can switch between 2 CDM/1 CAM and vice versa depending on the opponents' philosophy. The default formation, however, includes two defensive midfielders and one attacking one. The backline tends to stay back during attacks, especially if the opposing attacker doesn't fall back into defense; fullbacks sometimes provide attacking support depending on the presence of the opposing winger.

This quick possession play allows for the team to quickly penetrate through defenses, especially those caught out by counterattacks. However, if the opposition plays a low block, the team can struggle to break through, and a boring display of possession ball might be played instead.

Distinctive Playstyles and Traits
Note: If a player isn't mentioned here just do whatever you want with them.
  • Leonova and Korneyeva tend not to leave their line, although Korneyeva comes out for 1-on-1 situations.
  • Antipova's sprints usually start off very explosive, but her pace dies off quickly.
  • Serebrova has a habit of being "lazy" whenever the ball isn't on her side of the pitch.
  • Menshikova has a flair for blocking shots, but a good portion of those shots come with handballs.
  • Grande and Dunayevskaya like to go against Markova's commands and join the team during corners; only Dunayevskaya has the pace to track back when counterattacked after.
  • Barkova loves to charge at players while having the ball regardless of who she's squaring up with. Kazapova on the other hand would rather pass the ball than make a run.
  • Miloradova has a tendency to swear at anyone, whether it be teammates, opponents, or the referee. She has gotten into hot water over this quite a few times.
  • What do Mamykina and Shubina have in common? Having insane ball control they love to show off during games.
  • Do not be alarmed or surprised if you see Oborina sky a ball from 40 yards out.
  • Kuznetsova usually passes to the central striker than a wide player.
  • Sapogova will always pass when she sees an opportunity.
  • Never let Marin shoot.
  • Runova takes advantage of her size to weave in between defenders. Only problem is she would rather dribble than pass to an open player.
  • Rozhkova loves to pressure defenders on the ball, and her pace can be really intimidating especially as she charges towards you. Thankfully or not, she can't tackle a ball to save her life.
  • Pishchalnikova prefers high through passes from the centre of the pitch to the striker. However, she can be oblivious as to whether the striker is onside or not.
  • Semerikova loses the ball very easily, but she makes up for it by aggressively rushing the opponent with the ball.
  • Kuzenkova-Domínguez is an expert in diving even without contact, but she sometimes chooses to play through an actual injury she received during a match.

Fan Culture
Despite Doubeia's recent independence, national cameraderie is strong, especially amongst Doubeinese supporters. Fans tend to try to intimidate the opponents and their supporters using fan chants and instruments such as drums, horns and gongs. There is a subset of supporters called the Rockers who usually perform in front of the fans before a game. The Rockers use electric guitars, drum sets and violins to hype up the Doubeinese supporters.

Tifos resembling the Doubeinese flag or one of the players are occasionally put up.

Doubeinese fans usually make a loud ruckus outside the stadium before and after matches. Bars nearby the stadium tend to fill up pretty quickly while fans parade along the boulevard leading to the stadium. After losses, Doubeinese fans tend to be more riled up and can get violent especially in response to mockery from the opposing supporters.

ELECTION CAMPAIGN HEATS UP AS MODERATES SPY KINGMAKING OPPORTUNITY

DORIVAL: With polls early into the 2041 federal election campaign possibly suggesting a hung parliament, the Moderate Party launched its campaign in Iswilyn — a state it wishes to win outright in both the federal and state elections that will be occurring on the same day — with an overarching campaign slogan of "Returning To The Centre." Federal Moderate leader Alex Kincardine, 43, an Iswilyn state legislator who is running for election in Dorival South-Central, said that the party's aim was to bring "reasonableness and action" to Straton, as well as be a "bipartisan moderating force" on any possible Labour or People's government in September.

The path that Mr. Kincardine, a relative unknown even in federal circles, took to the Moderate party leadership was unusual in modern politics. Yet it highlights the increasing desire for politicians outside the traditional federal pathway, with prominent state-level politicians being thought of as being able to jump directly into federal Cabinet roles. Mr. Kincardine's ascension to the role of Moderate leader, however, finalised what some have called an "Iswilyn takeover" of the party, where it is currently strongest. Mr. Kincardine's older sister, Josephine, 45, is Leader of the Opposition in the Iswilyn state legislature, and is running a campaign to turn the state yellow in the upcoming state election — something that has a high chance of happening, according to polls there. Iswilyn is also set to deliver a whole host of seats on the federal level to the Moderates, with as many as thirteen of the state's twenty-one seats favouring the Moderates in some way.

Thus lies the paradoxical nature of Mr. Kincardine's rise; he is little-known outside of Iswilyn, yet polls have shown the Moderates rising in polls to the extent that the centrists might deny Labour an overall majority in the upcoming federal election. The rise in the fortunes of the liberal Moderates in general, and the centrist Republicans in the southwest of the country perhaps reflects a disillusionment with both major parties; but with the progressive, environmentalist Alliance not seeing a similar rise in their fortunes, perhaps it is centrism that is coming back into prominence after two lean decades across the 2020s and 2030s.

Manager: HAN Ruoyang (Yuezhou), 61
It’s a new era for South Newlandia. After a dismal showing at CE37, the Elephants and previous manager Dale Hartford-Phelps decided to part ways. Despite struggling in recent tournaments, the Zwangzugian remains the only coach to win a major title with the Elephants. The defensively-minded manager had gotten his big break with Beian Athletic, before finding success at the national team level with Guanacasteca for almost a decade. Tactically, he runs a 3-5-2 formation. He tends to rely on a center back working as a deep-lying playmaker; coincidentally the same system that had gotten him success in his playing days. The roster looks better than it has lately, with a good couple of young players in the mix – goalkeeper and captain Edward Khan is the most experienced player on the squad, and he’s only 33. After predictably falling against Tumbra in the Quarterfinals, the Elephants find themselves still outside the true favourites for the title, but well inside dark-horse range. Dark-elephant range? Does that make sense?

Expected starting eleven:

(C) GK: Edward Khan (33) Avondale City (Sylestone)
The goalkeeper of top Sylestonian team Avondale City has played himself in the starting spot for the Elephants as well, thanks to reliable performances for both teams. The former bronze glove winner is the undisputed number one for the Elephants right now, and in contention for the best player on the squad. Han has also entrusted him with being the captain of the squad, and he’s a fairly steady presence between the posts. The Elephants will just have a problem if he goes down.

LCB: Matias Vaz (24) Zeiven City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
Vaz is playing more of a winger role with Zeiven, but will be expected to stay back more with the Elephants. Still, his great performances in the Peninsulae have more than earned him a starting spot with the team. He’s not really a threat with headers on corners or free kicks, but he can aid with some counter-attacks if he’s allowed to.
Image

CB: Liam Bai (30) Nagato Crownslayers (Riena)
Bai will take on the incredibly tough task of being the lone true centre-back after a strong season in Riena. The undersized Walstreim native has always been a good passer, and seems to be healthy enough right now. Like Vaz, he’s also not as tall as you’d like – this team could be quite exposed on free kicks and corners.

RB: Jannis Vogel-Huber (28) Mikan Wave (Riena)
Huber also joined the Sunrise League, and will be the starting Right Back for the Elephants after a strong season with the Wave. He’s got surprising speed and can dribble a little, so he could be a useful asset on counterattacks as well as on the defensive side.

LDM: Leon Mazza (32) Avondale Beach (Sylestone)
Yes, Mazza is usually a Left Back, but the Midfielder situation for the Elephants is weird. The Pachyderms will try to run Mazza in midfield, but he will also occasionally shift back to form more of a four-man defensive line. In that case, Johnson will be more of a true 6. Ignore that none of that is her role, anyway.

RDM: Luisa Johnson (30) Pesfield Trees (Sylestone)
Johnson usually plays a more offensive role, but will be shifting back to accommodate her teammates. The oft-injured midfielder is one of the most talented players on the team, and has proved as much on the Trees. Despite being expected to shoulder more defensive responsibilities, she will remain responsible for corners. She’s also the designated complain-to-the-ref person on the squad, with Han Ruoyang entrusting the midfielder with that responsibility.

LW: Christian Lange-Parker (28) Orchideeën (Taxhavn)
Lange-Parker has surprised many as a very real goal-threat in Taxhavn. A short, quick, clever midfielder, Lange-Parker can break down the sideline or inside to try and create himself with his dribbling skills. He certainly played a role in his team’s +40 goal differential the previous season, the second best in the SteuerLig-1.

AM: Alessio Lombardo (27) Nova Aegis (Saint Eleanor)
Lombardo left Elephant Valley to join one of the only even smaller countries that were an option. He’s been good for Nova Aegis, and has become both a scoring threat and good passer for the pachyderms. The Elephants hope for him to be a key figure in the middle.

RW: Robert Sanz (27) Hinami Black Eagles (Riena)
Sanz usually operates on the Left Wing, but like many politicians before him, he has shifted to the right. In his case, Sanz will accommodate his teammates, who have been here before him. The undersized player from Walstreim has done well with the Black Eagles as a playmaker.

ST: Angela Diaz (29) Star Unicorn (The 14 Stars)
Angela Diaz likes to be scoring any goal in any situation for Star Unicorn, and has also done well for the Elephants – at least sometimes. The star striker is one of the players the Elephants hope to get going, and there are plenty of other strikers waiting in the wings if she cannot.

ST: Aadi Seidel (24) Zeiven City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
Seidel has been performing admirably in the Kytler Peninsulae, becoming a strong scoring threat for Zeiven, finding a way one time after another. There are some weaknesses to his game that will have to be worked out with experience, but he’s got the talent to be an Elephants’ main-stay. With his extraordinary fitness, he’ll rarely ever be subbed off.

Bench:
Note that the Elephants are carrying 26 players, just as most other teams. However, some substitutes that are unlikely to play a material role have been omitted.

LB: Jerry Ali (20) Pontmeosont (Auprussia)
Sometimes, you need to give youth a chance. A tall, aggressive young defender from Sophie City with vision, Ali is still very much in the early stage in his career, but has made people take note with good performances for Pontmeosont.

LB: Alexis Tuskie (28) Chamberley City (Sylestone)
Tuskie never really hit her ceiling as a talented left back, but remains a fan favourite with South Newlandian fans. With some experience in the goal-unfriendly environment of Sylestone, she’s coming back as a sub option.

CB: Mary Romero (26) Scolastico (Elmyia)
At Scolastico, she’s found some success in a similar role to what Han is looking for; an accurate passer with good vision and creativity to build up attacks for this team. Romero has been getting some good experience in Elmyia, including her first addition on the Team of the Season. After some struggles with the Ellies, she’s coming off the bench here, but could still make a material impact; she’s the most likely defensive substitute.

CB: Rose Graham (21) Fortuna Sigewinne (Doubeia)
Graham is another young player who’ll just need time, but she’s done well so far with Fortuna. An accurate passer and solid-enough defender, the young Elephant is unlikely to see the field just yet, but will be gaining valuable experience.

RM: Jacqueline Behera (25) Kyethas Rivermen FC (Tikariot)
Behera should be an interesting addition in the midfield. She’s had some good performances from the bench for the Rivermen, including some critical assists. She’s never quite put everything together despite some obvious talent, but she’ll have chances as a substitute to prove herself; especially given the midfielder situation in general.

ST: Donald Baumann (22) A.F.C. Viridescent (Geektopia)
Baumann has already logged good minutes with two different clubs in Geektopia at his young age, and has obvious stand-out talents, including accurate passes and a knack for scoring with headers. He should be a frequent substitute.

ST: Vitoria Saez (25) Hawthorne United (Xanneria)
One of many options the Elephants have up front. Sure, Xanneria is a friendly environment, but she’s been doing well there. She could also definitely play on the Right Wing, so she provides some additional flexibility.

ST: Jeanne Gautier (23) Strathcona Internationals (Kelssek)
Gautier has quietly been good for the Internationals. The young striker from Kinjestad is definitely underrated, and could become an impact player for this team as well.

ST: Micheal Basile (22) Moncloa (Tero al Disco)
Basile is making a lot of noise for a player his age and rotational spot. Despite few appearances with Moncloa, he’s been making a few of them count for a top tier team in the Nacional. He’s been talented, and he’s putting in the work, so his ceiling is yet to be determined.

ST: Gabriel Fischer (21) Pegasus Orb FC (The 14 Stars)
The young, speedy striker is easily the player with the smallest sample size yet, but he’s been a threat early in the season for Pegasus Orb. He’ll probably ride the bench and gain some experience here, but he might prove to be a nice compliment at front very quickly.
