For decades the autocratic (now ‘democratic’) rulers of Sargossa have pumped resources into sport, reasoning that if the population is participating in, or simply enjoying, a vast array of sporting events it would serve to distract from their lack of political freedoms. Not that they lack political freedoms. There are elections now and everything. While the likes of football, athletics, aquatics, volleyball, tennis, boxing and golf are the dominant forces on the nation’s sporting landscape, every Olympic discipline has a professional foothold to some degree in Sargossa.

Multi-sport events have captured the imagination too, with the biannual Island Games scratching that itch in non-Olympics years. The Island Games have since been retired in favour of the much larger Games of the Greater Republic. The Games of the Greater Republic are a slightly scaled down Olympics that is held every four years, at the halfway point of the Olympic cycle. But the Olympics themselves remain the ultimate prize in the eyes of Sargossa’s athletes. The tournament across Rushmore will mark the fourteenth time the nation has competed on the biggest stage of all. The OAS have, as is now tradition, refused to set a medal target this time around, unwilling to put more pressure on their charges.

Other than inflicting injury or death, I have no qualms about you using my athletes as you wish, choosing goal/points scorers as you wish etc. And feel free to drop me a TG with any RP fodder. Sargossan fans will be in attendance in numbers, but will not be causing any form of trouble.

And, if you're scratching around for one, please also feel free to use any Hispanic sounding name as a Sargossan judge or official.

ᠶ‍‍ᠠ‍‍᠊ᡭ᠊᠎‍ᠣ‍‍ᠥ! Haruhata debuts at the Olympiad!

Haruhata (ᡥ᠊‍‍ᠠ‍ᠷ‍ᡠ᠊᠋‍᠊ᡥ᠊ᠠ‍‍ᠲ‍‍ᠠ / 荻兆) is an East Asian nation debuting at the Games of the XVIII Olympiad. With a population of 2,593,038, just over 50% of the population is situated in the capital city, Alhaanfuutar, the rest scattered across Haruhata's sprawling steppe and grasslands. A large number of the population still retain nomadic lifestyles, with estimates ranging from 20% - 35% of the populace.

For Haruhata's first Olympiad, the nation is being represented by 32 athletes (18 men, 14 women) across a multitude of disciplines, namely: diving, archery, athletic, breaking, cycling, equestrian, fencing, gymnastic, judo, skateboarding, climbing and taekwondo. Despite the rather small delegation, the Haruhati Olympiad Committee hopes to carve the path for future success in the Olympiad.

..Get a Closer Look at the Polkopian Olympic Teams...

Not too long ago, hundreds of Polkopian athletes left their home soil to compete in the largest multi-sport event in the multiverse - the Olympics. This will be Polkopia's third showing at the Olympic Games.

While many hometown Polkopians have undoubtedly heard of some of the athletes participating in some of the individual events, this article showcases some of the talent that comprises the team sports that Polkopia will be sending to the Olympics. Some of these names will be familiar to some of those who follow their respective sport, while others are seemingly unknown but still boast incredible amounts of talent.

These team events include, Artistic Swimming, Men's and Women's Water Polo, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's 3x3 Basketball, Men's and Women's Football, Men's and Women's Rhythmic Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Coxed Eights, Men's and Women's Rogby Sevens, and Men's and Women's Indoor Volleyball. Continue reading to see all of the athletes that make up each team and be sure to show your support!

DRAWKLAND'S OLYMPIC DELEGATION
Games of the XVIII Olympiad

Nation: The Interstellar Empire of Drawkland
Region: Sonnel
Trigramme: DRK
National Anthem: "The Grand Pentad"
Team Kit Colors: Black and Red

Previous Editions: Olympiads X & XI
Total Medal Count: 6 Gold, 8 Silver, 11 Bronze (0-1-3 in Demonstration Events)

Governing Body: Drawkian International Sporting Council (DISC)
DISC Director: Harvey Flantar, 107
Head of Delegation: Sandra North, 66
Flagbearers (Opening): Hamilton - Ellzidan, Archery / Schimpol - Jaxon Madison, Modern Pentathlon
Flagbearers (Closing): TBD
Signup Link: Here

Important notes about Drawkian physiology:
Drawkians are not humans. They are humanoid, and besides a few proportional differences, they look pretty much indistinguishable from humans. This is because Drawkland is from Sonnel, which is technically a separate planet from earth/NS Sports regions/whatever terrestrial body your nation calls home. If this is immersion-breaking to you, I highly recommend that you ignore this and pretend Drawkians are just like regular people. I don't mind at all.

Average height: Men 7'5" (226cm), Women 7'3" (221 cm)
Average lifespan: Men 137 years, Women 140 years
Average retirement (normal): 125 years
Average retirement (athlete): 45 years

Note that while Drawkians are taller, their proportions are also wider/thicker to match. The average Drawkian is pretty lean, but they look more proportionally sound than a human of equal height would look. The aging curve is also a little different. Athletes in good conditioning will usually retire around 50, and most Drawkians civilians work well into their 100s as the body doesn't start really slowing down until then. If it helps, imagine Drawkians as slightly nerfed elves without the pointy ears.

You can also view this factbook for more advanced information. Please note that this factbook is several years old now, and I have since updated/retconned some information contained within. Consider the statistics posted above to be correct, in case of any contradictions. If you have any questions, concerns, or want for clarification, message me. Again, if you think this is dumb and lorebreaking, just ignore this.

Also, not sure where else to put this, but I'm rolling with there being 5 years between Olympic cycles, because of how many cycles there are per year in other sports on NSS. Not like that's a big deal, really. Fluid time and all that.

RP Permissions:
If my opponent RPs first they may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Ask first
RP injuries to my players: Ask first
Godmod injuries to my players: Ask first
Yellow/Red card my players: Yes
Godmod other events: Ask first
Style Modifier: +4

I'm usually pretty lenient on injuries and all that, I would just appreciate some notice if you plan to RP something like that just to make sure I don't miss it. Send a telegram or Discord DM if you need to contact me for whatever reason. Style mod used across any discipline where a style mod would be necessary from an IC tactical standpoint.

Individual Athlete Notes
Won't provide notes on all individual athletes, because there are so many. However, just some relevant notes on a few of them.

Kasozi, Akello, and Alanyo Zervos(Swimming). These three are the hope for Banijan swimming. Banijan swimming has never been known for its excellence at, well, anything- but it hit a new low last Games, earning just a single swimming medal at the XVII Summer Olympiad- although Banijan aquatics added a diving medal as well. No golds. Patrick Zervos, the head of the Olympic Committee of Banija, called that low 'embarassing'. "We need to do better at getting our athletes in a position to succeed". He told reporters. And where did he look in the water? That's right... His own grandchildren. His son, Dennis, quite famously, is the gridiron HC at Loyola-Istria in the NSCF. And he has three triplet sons who are more into swimming than gridiron- and find themselves to be Olympians. Can that family history of excellence repeat itself here, and finally get Banijan swimming to earn the respect of the broader Olympic movement?

Lance Kabuye(Equestrian). Lance Kabuye is an old man, of 74 years old. However, he has wild energy- the energy of those many his youth. He spent over a decade as the head coach of Northern Moravica University in gridiron, known for emphatic displays of passion, hard-nosed hitting football, and consistency. Despite that, he has a love for horses- he owns more than 10. Of course, that's possible since he was well compensated as a football coach at a football mad school in a football mad nation. Growing up in what was formerly a noble family, he's done equestrian competitions his whole life- and this is one where a HC, who seems to have beaten cancer, believes he has a chance to win gold.

Starting Lineup - Players who are italicized are making their international debut at IBC 38.
PG #3 Obasie Khoza. 6'2. 34 years old. Graduate of Loyola-Istria, where he won the NSCAA 13 championship. One of the team's two stars.
SG #12 Koro Josea. 6'4. 24 years old. Graduate of Bunyoro A&M. Elite 3&D kind of player. Also pretty good in the mid-range, but not so great at creating his own shot.
SF #14 Philemon Abonyo. 6'7. 31 years old. Graduate of the University of Moravica, former #1 HS basketball player in the country. Led them to #1 overall seed for the Ultra 64 in NSCAA 13. Team's secondary star.
PF #23 Sylvester Guwanya. 6'9. 30 years old. Graduate of the University of Kitara. 3 & D guy, very switchable on defense.
C #12 Ezra Ogada. 7'1. 24 years old. Went straight to pro ball. Plays professionally at home. Very much a back to the basket type of center. Known as elite defender.
Bench
SF/PF #0 Tijan Mendy. 6'6. 34 years old. Graduate of Northern Moravica. Team's 6th man.
SG #7 Beno Tambo. 6'5. 23 years old. Plays professionally at home.
SF/PF #4 Kizza Kaba. 6'8, 24 years old. Graduate of Kizza I College.
C #10 Musubaho Nkajja. 7'2, 33 years old. Plays professionally at home.
PG #13 Malkom Yrisuéniho. Farf-Banijan dual-national(Induja). 6'1. 25 years old. Born in Induja, came as a child to Banija. Grew up playing on the courts in Busukuma. Crazy athletic, absolutely unorganized, seen as tough to coach but with limitless talent. NSCAA 14 champion with the University of Moravica.
PG/SG #5 Masamba Bala. 6'4. 28 years old. 3 years at Northern Moravica, now plays pro ball domestically.
C/PF #9 Kito Umoja. 6'11. 25 years old. Plays professionally at home. 3 point shooter.

Closeout Lineup
PG #3 Obasie Khoza
SG #12 Philemon Abonyo
SF #14 Tijan Mendy
PF #0 Sylvester Guwanya
C #12 Ezra Ogada

Notes:
- We almost always play a 1-3-1 zone defense. It works well with this team, which has lots of size, and is getting faster, especially at guard. Situationally, we will switch to man to man or a box and 1 if the other team's star player is hot, but the 1-3-1 is the base.
- This team is built very different from past teams. They space the floor much better, they have spread the floor with a lot of players who can hit jumpers, especially three pointers. They also like to play fast.
- This team will run at almost any chance they get. While rebounding, especially on defense, is the team's weakest link, when they do get a rebound, they are able to push the ball, and so quickly.
- For the group stages, this team's rotation runs 12 deep, as the head coach will do his best to get all 12 players into the game for every single group stage game. However, they will almost certainly shorten the rotation to 8-9 players come the knockout stages. The rotation shrinks in the knockout stages, and in knockout games and other must wins, the coach is willing to play his two young star players(Khoza and Abonyo) extremely heavy minutes (35+) once the late KO stages hit.

Notes:
- This team likes to play a 2-1-2 zone defense. They will pack the paint to make it tough to get to the rim, but they are susceptible to getting beat with the jump shot, especially on the deep ball.
- The closeout lineup is the same as the starting lineup.
- This team will run at almost any chance they get. While rebounding, especially on defense, is the team's weakest link, when they do get a rebound, they are able to push the ball, and so quickly.
- For the group stages, this team's rotation runs 12 deep. However, they will almost certainly shorten the rotation to 8-9 players come the knockout stages.

Recent Team History
The Peerless Princes have quite arguably defined this sport since its addition to the Olympic Games. Men's 3x3 basketball- a competitive endeavour, to be sure, but in recent years it has been all about the Banijans. Ahead of the XV Summer Olympiad, the then young four Princes- Ssemanda, Kato, Ssekamanya(RIP), and Lallo formed a team to enter into Banija's 3x3 qualifiers. Many thought that they would not be able to hang- but they dominated the Banijan qualification tournament, earning a place at the Olympics. The real question was, however- could a bunch of royals dominate streetball at the Olympics?

The answer, unequivocally, was yes. At the XV Summer Olympiad, the Princes were dominant, going 5-0 in group play, swatting aside all opposition. However, they fell early in the KO stages, being eliminated by Ioudaia in the Round of 16. The brutality of the tournament- one loss and you're gone. But the Princes regrouped and returned- winning the qualifying tournament in Banija again, ahead of the next Olympiad. And then they made a spectacular run, all the way to earning a gold medal. And, in devastating fashion, they repeated in the XVII Summer Olympiad- back to back gold medals in the same sport. With the same core 4- Omugabes Lallo, Ssekamanya, Ssemanda, and Kato- the last three being brothers.

However, the team looks much different now. With Omugabe Ssekamanya's tragic passing in a plane disappearance over the Blood Sea, and Omugabe Lallo now retired to serve as the Governor-General of the Banijan Esportivan Territories, the team makeup is changing significantly. Omugabes Ssemanda and Kato are still around, of course. But they are being joined by a pair of Princes- Omugabes Ousman and Muhoozi, who are both making their Olympic debuts.

"Everything changes, everything stays the same" is the mantra from the team. Can they achieve what would be an unprecedented third consecutive gold medal in this event? or is the Mini-dynasty over?

Women's Volleyball in Banija

Volleyball has always been a fairly popular sport among female athletes, one of the few Banijan sports where ratings and attention are dominated by the women's side, as opposed to the men's side. With that, the sport never really gender integrated. But this being a smaller sport, there has been less unity at the professional level.

The collegiate level works like the rest of the country's college sports. It's the professional level where it gets interesting. Instead of one, unified, national league, there are three rival women's professional volleyball leagues in the country- the Banija Elite Volleyball League(BEVL), Major League Volleyball of Banija(MLVB), and the Banijan Volleyball Player's Coalition(BVPC). The BEVL is concentrated in the ever-important Moravica Region, with 8 teams based in Istria and Herzegovina City.

However, it is not necessarily the dominant region for volleyball in the country. The BVPC and the MLVB both are spread out across Banija, with 10 teams in each league. The three professional leagues are considered rivals, and do not engage in inter-league competition. The Olympic Committee of Banija has expressed "no desire" to unify the leagues, saying that the large number of teams across the three leagues allows volleyball to reach a greater number of spectators.

At the national team level, the sport really established itself during the XIV Summer Olympiad in Istria. With the volleyball portion of the games taking place in Banija, Banija's women rose up to the challenge, sweeping gold medals in women's volleyball, both in the team indoor version of the sport and on the beach. Even more impressive was a few cycles later, they repeated this feat kn the Twin Cities during the XVI Summer Olympiad. Banijan women's volleyball are coming back for more this time around, looking for a third Olympic medal in 5 cycles.

Loch Dearg Delegation for the XVII Olympiad

Delegation: Loch Dearg
Trigram: LDE
Number of Entrants: 300
Olympic Flagbearers for Electrum: Fiona Fitzgerald (Skateboarding), Jack Byrne (Fencing)
Olympic Flagbearers for Liventa: Cathal Mac Donna (Judo), Caoimhe Clarke (Sports Climbing)
Primary Colours: Generally red, although the football kits use the green and black of the flag

Empty... for now. Loch Dearg has historically been a rather corrupt and isolated nation, however a series of riots and protests led to reform with the previous political elite making way for more forward thinking leaders. The government enacted a long term plan featuring heavy investment in sporting facilities, culminating in participation in World Cup 97 and the XVIII Olympics. The World Cup was a major success, with the debutants finishing 3rd in qualifying and narrowly missing out on the tournament proper due to a playoff loss. Loch Dearg's people have a newfound patriotism and interest in international sporting events and the nation awaits in eager anticipation for their Olympic debut.

Editorial Note:

Da Cunha roster list has been amended as two different football teams was mistakenly listed for both women's and men's football.

The incorrectly filed team rosters have been deleted.

As per the Games' AI declaration policy, I declare that I used generative AI for some of the names in this anthem. In addition, I used generative AI to help point me in the direction of some songs to use for the Afanc Strait's national anthem (although it was more counterproductive than anything since it literally made up a couple of marches).

Afanc Strait — Rosters for the Games of the XVIII Olympiad

Head of the Afanc Strait Olympic Committee: Alexander Lennox
Hamilton Flagbearers: Andrew Green (beach volleyball), Elia Xal (tennis)
Schimpol Flagbearers: Kit Kenning (swimming), Tara Lowland-Bonauto (sailing)
"National" Anthem: "Wings of Victory"

About the Afanc Strait
The Afanc Strait Olympic Committee consists of athletes from both Ceni and New Gelderland. Ceni and New Gelderland, previously an Olympic powerhouse in its own right, aim for rough equality in the number of athletes they send in the combined delegation, although this might not always be the case in cases where medal prospects might be at stake. The ASOC has previously hosted two Olympic Games alongside Quebec and Shingoryeo (the Games of the XVII Olympiad and XVII Olympic Winter Games). In addition, the New Gelderland Olympic Committee previously co-hosted the Games of the X Olympiad alongside Electrum.

Politically, the combined Confederacy of the Afanc Strait between the two countries has one common foreign policy and one centralized leadership. But Ceni and New Gelderland still have their own parliaments, their own domestic policies, and their own fiscal policies.

New Gelderland, located on the southwest coast of the Terranea region of Rushmore, is home to approximately 15 million people. With Celtic, Dutch, English, and Euran roots, New Gelderland is famous for its agricultural production along the central Rogue, Great Rushmori, and Talos River Valleys. Although Lexington is its political capital, its economic capital is indubitably Nassau Bay, which also hosted the Games of the X Olympiad alongside Centralis.

Ceni is a small island country of around 5500 km2 located in the western parts of Sonnel, just off the coast of the Iarokannet Bay region of Drawkland after it followed the lead of Delaclava and moved to Sonnel. With a population of just over 13 million, this makes Ceni one of the densest countries in Sonnel, at around 2360 people per sq km. Ceni is also one of the most urbanized countries in Rushmore, with the three major cities, Cenial, the capital, City Centre, and New Oxford, forming one large urban agglomeration called the "Metropolitan Tetrad" in local parlance alongside Whitehaven, with the city petering out around the edges of the metropolis. New Oxford and Whitehaven co-hosted the Games of the XVIII Olympiad alongside Jolbonopolis.
