Although FC Sillimus proved to be a very hard nut to crack for the Industrial side, especially in the first leg where they were five minutes away from holding the Liga-1 side to a draw, Yumbo only needed one goal at Vincent Stadium to round up their narrow win at the city-state and successfully defend their place in the top flight, keeping the Griffons in Liga-2 for one more season in the process.

Although Real Guadír seemed to be on the driver's seat towards promotion in their second attempt at the promotion playoff after taking a two-goal lead in the first leg played at Junín's Estadio Camal and then making things further uphill for the Eternan side by scoring another goal in the first half of the second leg in Eterna City, Celtic were eventually able to turn things around in miraculous fashion by scoring four goals in the second half, thus confirming themselves for the next Liga-2 season and leaving the Rojiverdes at the doors of promotion once again.

Liga-1 Season 71 - Recap:

Another season has ended and Metropolis Alligators have successfully defended the title won in the previous year. The Alligators, who like most Valladar clubs are expected to undergo a large-scale squad renovation, dominated the league for most of the season, although squads such as Tannenberg and Deportivo Junín offered some resistance especially in the early stages of the league tournament. Although the Granates started the season firing on all cylinders by winning their first three games against returnees Servette and Universitario in addition to Bohemians, the fact that the Titan was never far away from the top made the task of keeping themselves atop a more difficult task for the Juninese side. And adding to that, Tannenberg FC was also lurking around there, waiting for the chance to hit and take the lead. Whilst Junín, MA, and the Citizens all had to face the newly-promoted sides on the first matchday, TFC had a much harder debut than expected, losing to Universitario in unceremonious fashion at home while the Alligators beat Libertad in the Champions' Kickoff. However, the team from Carloburgo quickly made up for that by winning the following four matches to place themselves in second place, and then took advantage of a loss for Junín in Canalave to reach the summit despite being unable to win the Western Valladares derby against Pradera. Unfortunately for Bruno Mouche and his side, TFC's leadership was short-lived as they would go on to lose to the Alligators at White Meadow Arena and had to hand the lead to their reptilian rivals, who would tighten their grip on it after beating Junín in the following match.

Even though both TFC and Junín had the chance to catch up with the Alligators prior to halfway point after the Titan lost two matches in a row against Bohemians and Universitario, they would never surrender the lead for the remainder of the season, clinching the title with three matches in hand after beating Edmonton in the Westlands and watching TFC being held to a draw by Yumbo FC. Not only did the Alligators achieve a much-wanted back-to-back, but this new championship also allowed to give chase to Fontvielle Impact in the league's roll of honour, which now has both sides tied at 16 titles. Speaking of l'Impact, their runner-up finish as well as their King's Shield title (both of which seemed extremely unlikely at halfway point with the team floundering in 12th place and being more concerned with avoiding being involved in the relegation drama) saved a season that seemed to be a disaster at every level. The start of the second half of the season eventually became the team's turning point, with Les Bleus picking up some wins and slowly starting to gain positions and move up the table, while Junín and TFC were taking points off each other and allowing other sides such as Marinos, Bezieres, and Nacional to join the fun.

As it became more apparent that the Alligators were running away with the title and the first ticket to board the Champions League train, the race for the remaining IFCF berths became the main attraction for the final rounds of the season, with eight sides battling for three berths: Junín, Tannenberg, Marinos, Impact, Nacional, Bezieres, Pradera, and Olympique de Fontvielle, the latter two having obtained during the first part of the championship a collection of points good enough to keep them in the fight until the final rounds, whilst Bleus, Rouges, and Albos had to come from behind in order to keep their hopes to snatch a berth in the end intact. Out of those eight teams, Olympique de Fontvielle was the first one to bid farewell to their aspirations, losing to Libertad on MD35 and finding themselves trailing the fourth-placed side TFC by 11 points with just 9 left. However, that distance was reduced to just 6 points when the lower reference was the seventh-placed side (Bezieres). With three matches to go, Marinos and Fontvielle Impact had both managed to sneak into the top four, the latter doing so by denting the aspirations of Deportivo Junín who were left six points adrift. With 59 points, Pradera were now leading the chasing pack, having been pushed out of the top four by Marineros and Bleus after losing to the Dragons in Canalave. Although both Nacional and Bezieres could still dream of claiming a Challengers Cup berth, a margin of error bordering on zero meant that their hopes were dealt a final blow on the following matchday after losing to the Stars and Boehmians, respectively, and with that the list of potential challengers got reduced to five sides, although Junín and Pradera also suffered some untimely setbacks in this round: the Granates tied with Libertad in Lierravus, result that left the Blanquinegro all but saved from relegation in their first season in the top tier, whilst the Verdiblancos were beaten by Olympique at home.

With Impact taking the lead in the battle for the final Champions League berth by beating Yumbo whilst Tannenberg and Marinos cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw at White Meadow Arena, we entered the final two rounds of the season with Round 37 having yet another direct matchup involving the Marineros: Marinos vs. Impact at Estadio Zachary Fortin, whilst Tannenberg were not too far from there as they had to visit Servette. And the results at the capital left Marinos as the most damaged side, having to give up two points against l'Impact and falling down to fourth place with 64 points whilst Tannenberg were now heading into the final matchday tied in 66 points for second place with Les Bleus due to their 3-0 win against the Grenat side. However, due to Impact's qualification for the Kings' Shield final, the IFCF battle was still open to outsiders who were hoping for a potential fifth berth to open up, with Junín winning a key match against Yumbo in Vincent to move into fifth place, with Pradera and Nacional placed within striking distance of the Granate side. And so, the final round of the season came, with Impact hosting a Servette side who were already certain to play the relegation playoff, Tannenberg hosting Bohemians in Carloburgo, and Marinos visiting Junín in the Far East. Meanwhile, both Pradera and Nacional were hoping to take advantage of that tough final game for Junín in order to snatch fifth place off the hands of Damián Trolli and his side, although both had great challenges ahead of them as the former had to entertain the champions Metropolis Alligators at Swangard, while La Academia were being visited by Canalave Dragons. Unfortunately for those neutrals interested in following the outcome of the IFCF race and hoping for some final drama, they were treated to an anticlimactic ending with all three frontrunners losing, which meant that Impact ended up joining the Alligators in the Champions League thanks to their superior overall GD over TFC, whilst Citizens and Marineros had to settle for Challengers Cup participations. Meanwhile, Junín's 2-0 win over Marinos put fifth place definitely out of reach for both Pradera and Nacional, and with Impact's eventual victory in the Kings' Shield final over surprise package Defensores de Villafuerte, the Granates became the last Valladar team in IFCF competition for the upcoming season.

In the middle of the table, we find Canalave Dragons and their two arch-rivals, Slateport Bulls and Eterna Stars. The three sides were others who had a forgettable first half of the season, finding themselves in the bottom four at several moments, however, the second half of the season was another story as Dragons, Stars and Bulls began collecting victories and moved away from the relegation struggle. Unfortunately their reaction came up too late to turn any of them into potential IFCF contenders, but it was just enough to avoid further embarrassment. Just like these three sides, Bohemians also had a pretty slow start to this Liga-1 season, however, it only took the Gallo nine matches to establish themselves in the comfort of mid-table while also bringing lots of trouble to the teams fighting in the upper half of the table. However, the big story this season is the survival of not just one, but two promoted sides: Libertad and Universitario de Maldonado. The Blanquinegro, in its first season in the top flight, achieved salvation mostly thanks to their campaign in the first half of the season that saw them around or close to tenth place, which was enough to lift them away from the relegation battle, whilst the team from Maldonado was determined to break their own custom whenever they get to play in the top flight of being a punching bag for everyone in the league and this time turned into another side that took pleasure in snatching points from the big sides, which in turn was the main factor that contributed to their unexpected survival (people in Maldonado could celebrate this as if it was a championship, I would say...).

As we approach the relegation zone, we find an unlikely guest there in the form of Real Campo Grande. The Verdolaga side, who had get used to be fighting at the top and against the top guns, had an unexplained implosion this time which translated into a campaign in which they could never get an upper placement than 16th place and were haunted with the return of the relegation ghost for most of the season. They could only get some solace on the penultimate matchday, when a 1-1 draw with Canalave Dragons coupled with that loss for the 17th-placed side Servette against TFC made it mathematically impossible for Les Grenats to surpass them. Speaking of Servette, had the Grenat side managed to maintain the good performances displayed in the first half of the campaign, they could have made the season for the promoted sides a perfect one, however, the shallow depth of their squad turned into a serious problem as the season progressed and Servette were unable to keep up with the good job done as they began losing key elements to injuries and disciplinary sanctions. Fortunately for them, the fact that Maritime Westporte, Edmonton United, and Yumbo FC remained anchored to the bottom three for most of the season meant that Servette will at least have one last chance to make the survival of all promoted sides a fact, as they will have to play the relegation playoff. As for Seahorses, Monties, and Industriales, there is not much to be said about them other than the fact that their extremely poor campaigns pretty much killed the excitement that the battle to avoid relegation usually brings, as their relegations were confirmed with at least two matches to go.

Although the first leg played in the outskirts of Carloburgo seemed to indicate that this playoff was going to be an extremely narrow affair, with Atlético Nápoles barely edging past Stanford United, in the second leg in Metropolis the Albirrojo ended up making short work of the Checkered side to make it two wins out of two and ensure their presence in the next Liga-2 season.

And it's now one, two...three Valladar Liga-1 titles in a row for Metropolis Alligators, who managed to recover in time from a slow start to the season to beat arch-rivals Marinos Metropolis in an exciting title race that had to wait until the final day for the dust to settle. The Titan, who finally took the lead in their particular head-to-head with Fontvielle Impact at the top of the league's roll of honour with 17 league titles to the 16 Bleu ones, showed a pleasant surprise in dual Valladar-Quebecois national Anthony-Tathan Berhalter, who in his first season as starting striker led the Alligators' offensive effort, scoring 30 out of the team's 62 goals in the league season which in turn earned him the Golden Boot as well as the Revelation Player award. However, as we said, the effort by Berhalter and others only started to manifest itself strongly in the second half of the season, given that the team coached by Mauricio Oswalt found some trouble to find a consistent performance in the dawn of the season.

With the Alligators trying to find their particular balance between team chemistry and performance, the first half of the season granted some unexpected sides a chance to shine, namely Real Campo Grande and Étoile Verte, the former coming from some underwhelming performances in previous seasons and even narrowly avoiding relegation in the most recent one, whilst the latter made its return to Liga-1 after some seasons drifting in the second tier and wanted to make a statement in the competition. Thus, the top spot of the standings was traded by Verdolagas and Verts between the fifth and thirteenth rounds, with Real Campo Grande winning key matches such as the Illirian Derby against Bezieres and against the Alligators and Tannenberg on the road, while Étoile Verte went unbeaten until that matchday 13 when they were finally forced to bite the dust after being thumped 3-0 by Tannenberg at the Stade de Charmilliot. That loss for Étoile Verte coupled with a draw for Real Campo Grande in Eterna City opened the door for another more traditional contender to join the race: Marinos Metropolis. The Marineros, led by the striker duo made up of Auprussian player Ariou Adalrisse and homegrown prospect Rafael Mathías, had managed to sit comfortably in third place trailing both Real and Étoile Verte but had lacked a chance to surpass both sides, finally found the opportunity they had been looking for, defeating Universitario de Maldonado to move one spot and then successfully taking the top spot by defeating Nacional at the recently refurbished City of Metropolis Stadium in a new edition of the South Metropolis derby on MD14. Two weeks later, Real Campo Grande had the chance to return to the top spot at Marinos' expense, as the Marineros visited the Chiquito highlands, but the team coached by Ronald Labbadia instead took the chance to move four points clear by defeating the Verdolagas in Campo Grande. Eventually, Marinos ended up claiming the winter championship, defeating Étoile Verte on the final round of the first half to reach halfway point with a five-point lead on the second-placed Metropolis Alligators, who by then were slowly gaining momentum, whilst Étoile Verte and Real Campo Grande were left trailing the Marineros by 7 and 8 points, respectively.

Although the developments in the start of the second half seemed to imply that Marinos would comfortably cruise to an eighth league championship, as they were able to open up a nine-point lead on their arch-rivals, things began to change on MD28 with a Blue Derby defeat for Marinos at the hands of Slateport Bulls. That 4-2 loss in Slateport started a three-match losing streak which included a crucial defeat against the Titan at the National Stadium with a brace scored by Berhalter, which enabled the Alligators to cut the gap to five points with eight matches to go in the season. The second half of the season was not being kind at all to Real Campo Grande and Étoile Verte, who seemed to have run out of gas just when they needed it the most and entered poor streaks which made both sides quickly plummet into the middle of the table, while the battle for IFCF contention officially started with the usual prospective candidates: Fontvielle Impact, Tannenberg FC, Canalave Dragons, Nacional, AS Bezieres, Deportivo Junín, and Eterna Stars, all of them racing to outclass their rivals for international qualification while also being close enough to the Alligators to hope for them to enter a slump and somehow steal Champions League qualification from them as a consolation prize, considering Marinos's seemingly unsurmountable lead at the moment. Looking at the lower half of the standings, there were not a lot of surprises, other than Olympique de Fontvielle navigating through the muddy waters of the relegation zone. With Pradera and Slateport Bulls still holding as many chances to joining the IFCF fray as well as the relegation discussion on account of their uncomforable mid-table placements, the "real" fight to avoid the drop could be said to have involved seven sides: Bohemians, Lausanne, Libertad, Olympique, and Universitario de Maldonado could not afford to step back as they were only separated by three points, while further down, Servette and Danubio had lower chances of survival.

The beginning of October as well as the final stretch of the championship coincided with the beginning of the collapse of the Marinos castle. Although the team coached by Ronald Labbadia got a couple of wins against Danubio and Nacional to curtail their losing streak, a heated 1-0 defeat to Universitario de Maldonado on Independence Day coupled with three wins on a row since the Derby Metropolitano for the Alligators against Bohemians, Canalave Dragons and Servette put the Titan just two points adrift and piled up pressure on Marinos to restore the gap before it was too late. That winning streak also had consequences for the development of the IFCF race, which quickly morfed into a bloody carnage between six teams for only two Challengers Cup spots (or maybe three, depending on whether Fontvielle Impact could defend their Kings' Shield title or not or a Marinos win) as the Alligators also put themselves all but out of reach for the pursuit squad. Precisely, l'Impact were the frontrunners in that battle with five matches to go, with the Dragons sitting in fourth place, and the Stars, Tannenberg, and Bezieres right behind. Real Campo Grande, who had lost steam after their marvellous first half performance, were back to action after chaining three victories against fellow IFCF contenders Tannenberg, Eterna, and Impact, whilst Nacional, who were fighting into securing a return to the international stage, received three hard hits with losses to the Stars, Impact, and Marinos which were enough to seriously dent La Academia's aspirations. Meanwhile, the other "phoenix story" of the month originated from the depths of the bottom of the table and was written with burning lava from the drop zone, and had Olympique de Fontvielle as protagonist. After being seriously troubled with relegation for most of the season, Les Jaunes-et-Bleus finally understood that they needed to get their act together and were able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, winning three of their five most recent matches, all of them against direct rivals in their quest to avoid relegation: Servette, Lausanne, and Libertad were the three victims that helped clear the path of safety for Olympique, who were now four points clear of the relegation playoff spot while those three sides as well as Danubio (who were already preparing their return to Liga-2) made up the bottom four.

The two-point gap between Marinos and their reptilian crosstown rivals remained in place as the league entered its final month of competition, with the Alligators missing a great chance to assault the top spot on MD34 after witnessing Marinos lose to Tannenberg in Carloburgo, only for them to also lose to Pradera at home a few hours later, but things got really interesting two rounds later, as a 2-1 win for the Alligators against Olympique coupled with a scoreless draw between Marinos and Fontvielle Impact left Marinos and the Alligators tied at 67 points each, with MA taking the lead on H2H by having beaten Marinos once and drawn the other Derby played in the season. And although the race for the title was suddenly filled with emotion, the dispute for the Challengers Cup spots could not be left behind in that regard, with the field of potential qualifiers opening up again to embrace Nacional, Pradera, and Slateport Bulls, all of them taking full advantage of their respective winning streaks, whilst Canalave Dragons faltered at the worst possible time and were left all but out of the race as a result. With the fact that Fontvielle Impact was inching close to clinch third place in the league and also reached the Kings' Shield final, the panorama for the IFCF hopefuls looked even brighter with a third Challengers Cup spot as a quite feasible possibility. However, the same could not be said about the relegation struggle, which was all of a sudden, looking all but decided with Danubio and Servette being 99% relegated after trailing 17th-placed Lausanne by 6 points with two matches to go, Libertad having salvation out of reach and having in the relegation playoff their final chance of survival, and Lausanne themselves in pretty much the same situation as they were now trailing the 16th-placed Bohemians by five points.

Matchday 37 did not change anything at the top, with both Metropolis heavyweights winning their respective matches to head into the final matchday still tied in points and with a prospective championship tiebreaker match looming large, whilst the battle for third and fourth place was trimmed down to just four teams: Fontvielle Impact, Nacional (both tied on 60 points), Eterna Stars (58), and AS Bezieres (57). Impact missed a chance to clinch their bronze medals and further settle the matter by losing to Bohemians, with the Stars being defeated by Marinos and moving out of the top four. Nacional beat Pradera and left the Verdiblancos out of top four contention, forcing them to root for Fontvielle Impact in the cup final, and Les Rouges thrashed Lausanne in a regional duel between Foixien sides to keep their hopes alive until the final round, and left direct salvation out of reach for their rivals. Tannenberg and the Bulls will also be aiming for fifth place and a Fontvielle Impact back-to-back in the Kings' Shield, along with l'Impact's rivals in that final Real Campo Grande, even though a victory in that match would definitely suit the Verdolagas better. The penultimate round of the season also witnessed the mathematical confirmation of Danubio's relegation, after a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Olympique de Fontvielle, with Servette still aiming at a miracle that would allow them to qualify for the relegation playoff after beating TFC.

And we finally reached the final day of the season, with Marinos Metropolis and Metropolis Alligators looking to break their tie at the summit once and for all in their showdown against the teams from Bezieres, with the former visiting Étoile Verte at the Stade de Foix and the latter playing IFCF hopefuls Bezieres at the federal capital. Although the Marineros tried to break through a strong rival defense, the Vert backline eventually proved to be impervious to the efforts by the team coached by Ronald Labbadia, forcing them to settle for a scoreless draw, while at the same time, a goal by Tathan-Antony Berhalter in the 64th minute ended up being enough for Metropolis Alligators to break that tie with Marinos, beat Bezieres, and win their seventeenth domestic league title while also putting an end to Les Rouges's international aspirations in the process. Meanwhile, Impact and Nacional were hoping to seal Challengers Cup qualification by beating the Dragons and Libertad at home, respectively, with the Stars waiting for any of them to trip up in order to leapfrog any with a victory over Bohemians. Although Impact's alternate squad capitulated to the Dragons and Nacional "helped" Libertad snatch the relegation playoff spot by losing to them, the Yellows were unfortunately unable to capitalize on those setbacks as they were humbled by Bohemians with a harsh 4-0 defeat at home, with which both Bleus and Albos clinched their respective spots in the Challengers Cup. With their 2-1 win at the City of Metropolis Stadium, as well as a loss for Lausanne to Deportivo Junín, Libertad will be the team playing the relegation playoff, whilst Lausanne will join Servette and Danubio in Liga-2 the next season, and the battle for fifth place, which gained importance due to the presence of Fontvielle Impact in the Kings' Shield final, was eventually settled in Tannneberg FC's favour. With the Citizens and Pradera tied in points and set to face each other at White Meadow Arena on the final matchday and both Real Campo Grande and Slateport Bulls trailing them by a single point, the Western Valladares derby became the game that could decide all in this race, given that the winners would end up claiming fifth place and becoming Impact supporters until the next week to claim the final spot into the Challengers Cup. And it did, with Tannenberg beating the Verdiblancos 2-0 and rendering Real Campo Grande's win over Servette useless. The Verdolaga side could have even claimed the final Challengers Cup berth right away, but they needed the western derby to end in a draw in order to claim fifth place, which did not happen in the end.

But....Real Campo Grande enacted their sweet revenge and won the Kings' Shield. And Tannenberg FC ended up empty-handed, again.

Real Campo Grande ultimately prevented Fontvielle Impact from rounding up a successful title defense with their 1-0 win in the final match played at the National Stadium, which ensured a maiden Kings' Shield title for the Chiquitense side and also qualified it for both the Cup Winners' Cup and the Challengers Cup.

For a second year in a row, Hoxford Rovers get one final chance to seal their much-wanted return to Liga-1, playing the promotion playoff against the top flight's 17th placed, Libertad. Whilst the Westlanders were able to fuel their hopes with a narrow 1-0 win at Westlands Stadium in the first leg and put Libertad at the edge of the ledge with another goal in the second leg in Lierravus, the Alto Danubio side was able to stage a second half comeback with three goals, salvaging their Liga-1 status and also crushing the Rovers' hopes at the final hurdle for one more season.

After a surprising play-off stage that saw the lower seeds hitting the higher ones in the head and knocking them out of contention in swift fashion, Northport Bears claimed the consolation prize that gave them the chance to play Ajax Carloburgo for the final spot in Liga-2 for the next season. However, and despite an encouraging 1-1 draw in the first leg played in the Westlands, the Immigrants did not allow any surprises coming from the Bears and kept the status quo in place with a 4-1 thumping at Carloburgo's Olympic Stadium.

And one day, the sun shone again for Eterna Stars and their fans. Memories of the last champion team of the Stars, in the very distant 20th season, are now very far away in time. Fifty-three years later, much water has passed under this bridge and many of the fans who witnessed that feat are now resting in peace, having endured the hardships the team went over since then, including a painful relegation to the second tier, and had to leave the world without seeing their team lift a Valladar championship trophy again. The new generations of Stars fans grew up being told tales about a team that shone with their might in the early years of the Valladar football league and then drifted into obscurity, unable to claim back their former greatness and bring them the success their forefathers were able to enjoy. However, those sorrows can be gone, and those fans can now enjoy what winning a league championship is like since Eterna Stars brought fifty-three years of drought to a much-needed end and could finally lay claim to their coveted third Valladar Liga-1 title. And to make this feat even more epic than the ones ending in the previous two titles for the Yellow team, the Eternans prevailed in a race that was exciting until the very end, facing two of their bitterest rivals in Fontvielle Impact and Metropolis Alligators, as well as Marinos Metropolis and AS Bezieres, all of them reaching the last day of the season with a chance of winning the championship.

At the start of the season, not even the most optimistic Stars fan believed that their team would be close to win the title, or even contend for it, however, the team from Northern Valladares would defy those expectations and try to give their faithful a real chance to dream by starting the season firing on all cylinders and winning their first four matches of the campaign without conceding in the first three games, streak that was brought to an end by Bezieres on MD4, although Les Rouges ended up capitulating to the Stars in Eterna City 3-2. Picking up 12 out of 12 points was definitely something that was not on the Stars' plans at the start of the season, and with Tannenberg FC, Pradera FC, Fontvielle Impact, and Metropolis Alligators also boasting early unbeaten streaks, the average Stars fan could not help but wonder how long this "dream" would last. A 3-2 loss in the E1 Derby to a Canalave Dragons side that was not enjoying a great start to the season on MD5, as well as a harsh 5-2 defeat at the hands of a Pradera side that was also flying high were taken as signs that the Stars would return to mid-table mediocrity sooner than later, however, the Stars were able to hold on to the top spots of the table during the first quarter of the season, not going lower than fifth place, with Pradera and the Alligators sharing the top spot with 20 points by MD10, and being closely followed by Impact, TFC, and of course the Stars, who were only four points adrift.

While teams such as Pradera and the Stars themselves were enjoying a dream start, things for other traditional guests of the upper half of the table such as Marinos Metropolis, Nacional, Canalave Dragons, and Real Campo Grande were an entirely different story. Whilst Marinos had sort of an okay start by collecting five points in their first three matches, a loss to Pradera kickstarted a five-match losing streak which was in turn further exacerbated by their offensive sterility, being only able to score five goals in their first ten games, which sent the Marineros crashing to the bottom four of the table. Real Campo Grande were in a similar situation, with a shocking loss at the hands of newly-promoted side CAP on MD4 being the start for a negative streak that saw them piling up defeat after defeat and enter the relegation zone with six losses in a row. Curiously, both teams halted their terrible streaks by defeating the same rival: Bohemians. Marinos defeated them in the 10th round in a derby match, while Real's turn came the following matchday. However, this was not enough to snap them out of their disgrace as the Verdolagas would remain anchored to the red zone until the halfway point of the campaign, whilst a harsh 3-0 Derby Metropolitano thumping at the hands of Metropolis Alligators forced the Marinos' Board to change course and dismiss coach Ronald Labbadia. With Labbadia gone, former Marinos footballer and now Academy coach Ariel Balboa was entrusted with steering the Marinos boat out of troubled waters as a caretaker manager. The risky wager seemed to pay off, with Marinos quickly climbing up positions and even cracking into the upper half of the table by halfway point, which in turn was enough to convince the club's Board to make his appointment permanent. On the other hand, although the situation for both Nacional and the Dragons was not as desperate as the one for Marinos and RCG, the fact that they were in quite uncomfortable positions in the middle of the pack brought some displeasure to their respective fanbases.

As the league slowly reached halfway point, the moment the Stars fans were expecting finally came, being triggered by a 3-2 loss at home in the Eternan SuperClásico to a Slateport Bulls side that was waiting for their chance to begin an assault on the top spots of the campaign, which they fully capitalized at their arch-rivals' expense. For the first time in the season, the team left the top five of the table, going down to seventh place. Although the following match was a golden chance to regain the lost ground, visiting Fontvielle Impact at the Stade de la Frontière, Bleus and Yellows ended up cancelling each other out with a 2-2 draw that kept the Eternan side away from the top positions and also helped Pradera open up a four-point gap on the Foixien side at the top. And to further convince the average Stars fan that they had no businesses in the title race, they received another hard blow courtesy of CAP, losing to the Liga-2 champs in Los Chorros and falling down to ninth place. Meanwhile, the four-way battle between Pradera, Metropolis Alligators, Fontvielle Impact, and Tannenberg at the summit raged on, with Deportivo Junín surprisingly taking the Stars' place as outsider. The Juninese had one ace up their sleeve, however: they were the highest scoring team in the competition, having scored 28 goals in 14 games, and had already played and beaten TFC and Pradera, which gave them a H2H edge ahead of both if a tie in points were to be broken. Precisely, this loss for Pradera at the hands of the Granate side kicked the Verdiblancos out of the top and allowed the defending champions Metropolis Alligators to take the lead and set themselves on course for a triple-peat. Pradera had a chance to regain the top spot, with the Titan being in town on the following matchday, but a single moment of brilliance by striker Tathan-Antony Berhalter allowed them to emerge victorious from their showdown at the Estadio de la Montaña, opening up a three-point gap with the Verdiblancos in the process. Despite a harsh 3-0 loss to Fontvielle Impact in the Derby de Valladares which allowed the Bleu side to snatch top spot from the Alligators's hands, the latter side quickly regained the lead by taking advantage of a loss for l'Impact against Nacional with a win over Libertad, and eventually ended up claiming the winter championship with a four-point cushion over the Foixien team, and a five-point one over a Slateport Bulls side that quietly sneaked into the top five. The Stars were back into the top five, having been able to regain some ground and place themselves in fourth place with 33 points, along with Junín who closed the top five. Following that defeat to Metropolis Alligators, Pradera were only able to pick up four points, falling behind with 31 points, while TFC had also entered a poor streak, being unable to defeat the troubled Marinos and Real Campo Grande, however, a 3-1 win over Pradera helped them leapfrog their regional rivals for sixth place.

The decisive second half of the season kicked off with a solid Metropolis Alligators side seemingly headed to a third Liga-1 title in a row, and the next six teams in the standings being separated by only four points, which anticipated an extremely tough race for international berths. Unfortunately for the aspirations of most of these prospective contenders, the recent poor showings by Valladar sides in IFCF competition dealt a hard hit to the league's coëfficient to the extent that Valladares lost one Champions League berth. And subtracting the berth reserved to the Kings' Shield champion by the VFA, this meant that effectively there were only three international berths up for grabs, which in turn increased the difficulty of the IFCF race this season. Although the Alligators seemed to be on a strong position to run away with the title, an unexpected loss at the hands of CAP as well as a dull scoreless draw with Junín in the Far East allowed Fontvielle Impact to regain the lead after MD21 with two wins, whilst the Stars placed themselves in third place (which is now the threshold for IFCF qualification), having fully capitalized the fact that Junín and Slateport Bulls began losing ground in the race. Tannenberg could have taken advantage of this as well, however, a couple of losses at the hands of the troubled Libertad and Bohemians made sure that the Citizens would be less of a threat to the leading trio.

With l'Impact, the Alligators, and the Stars becoming slowly engulfed in a three-horse race for the title as well as Champions League qualification, and Junín and the Bulls still unable to mount a challenge, an unexpected challenger in the form of Marinos Metropolis entered the fray. The Marineros, who had bottomed out after losing the derby to the Titan, were surprisingly refreshed by Ariel Balboa's arrival to the bench, starting an impressive comeback that took them away from the relegation zone and returned them to the place where they were supposed to be, going on a 7-game unbeaten streak with 5 wins and 2 draws since halfway point to place themselves in fourth place, knocking the door of the top three. Eventually, it wouldn't take too long for Marinos to crack into the now reduced IFCF qualification zone, taking advantage of losses for the Alligators against the Dragons and the Stars against Pradera on MD28 to tie the Titan and the Yellows at 48 points, with the latter side being left out of the podium on H2H record. Meanwhile, Fontvielle Impact were opening up a four-point cushion on those three sides, who were now looking as the only ones who could snatch the title from their hands if things went their way in the final stretch of the table.

And the final ten matches of the campaign came, with l'Impact leading with 55 points, and then a three-way tie at 51 between the Alligators, Marinos, and the Stars, the Stars being the unfortunate side that would be left out of IFCF competition for the next season in case none of the top three won the Kings' Shield. However, just like Marinos in the third quarter of the season, a new contender would raise from the ashes to make things even more difficult for the leading quartet. With Tannenberg, Junín, and Pradera all being 10 points adrift from the top, and Slateport Bulls, Nacional, Canalave Dragons, and Edmonton a further 5 points away, Bezieres became the latest outsider to join the fun. Les Rouges, who had spent most of the season comfortably drifting in mid-table (much to their supporters' chagrin), woke up at the right moment and with a 2-0 win over Étoile Verte in the Derby de Bezieres on MD25 started an impressive unbeaten streak that saw them defeat Bohemians, Junín, Nacional, Olympique, and Universitario de Maldonado, and only dropping points with draws with the Alligators and TFC, which enabled them to get into the conversation that until then had only involved Impact, the Alligators, the Stars, and Marinos.

With five teams now fighting for the title as well as three IFCF spots, the final six rounds of the season became a minefield in which none of the contenders could afford to make a mistake, as it would be extremely costly for their aspirations. Fontvielle Impact learnt this with an unexpected defeat at the hands of Bohemians at home on MD33, which in turn allowed Eterna Stars to tie them at the summit, both sides with 59 points. The Alligators and Bezieres were still three points adrift, with Marinos trailing by four points, and a crucial Derby de Valladares between the Titan and l'Impact at Swangard coming next. Unfortunately both sides ended up playing for the Stars after cancelling each other out with a scoreless draw, allowing the Stars to move as sole leaders by beating Bohemians. With Marinos and Bezieres both winning their matches on the road, this draw proved to be further damaging to the defending Liga-1 champions, moving them down to fifth place. However, the immediately following matchday granted the Titan a great chance to bounce back, as they travelled to Eterna City to take on the Stars, who in turn were hoping to start wrapping this up and get closer to that elusive third league title. But the Alligators had other plans in mind and were able to keep their title hopes alive with a 3-1 win. And to make things even more exciting, draws for both Foixien heavyweights plus a narrow win for Marinos against relegation strugglers Universitario, left the five title contenders separated by just two points. The good news for the involved ones was that Fontvielle Impact and Metropolis Alligators reached the Kings' Shield final, which would open up a spot in the Challengers Cup for the fourth-placed team in case these two sides ended up placing in the top three in the Liga-1.

And so, we reached the final matchday with this panorama:

Fontvielle Impact depended solely on their effort to win their 17th league title and tie the Alligators in the Liga-1's Roll of Honour, but they would first need to edge past Olympique de Fontvielle in the final Fontvielle derby of the season. The Alligators would need to win and hope for l'Impact not to do so, with northern Metropolis rivals Bohemians being the last hurdle between them and another successful title defense, whilst Bezieres and Marinos, who also required both Impact and MA to draw or lose, had to face two sides who had to spend most of the season fending off the relegation ghost, but had managed to snatch some valuable points in the final stretch of the season to end up enjoying their safety in the relative comfort of mid-table: Les Rouges had to play the Illirian Derby against regional arch-rivals Real Campo Grande at the Stade de Foix and the Marineros had a tough trip Canalave to face the Dragons. No less difficult was the last matchday for the Stars, who had to play their last cards in Carloburgo against TFC, whilst Pradera's very slim chances of leapfrogging those five behemoths were compensated with a much easier final rival in the season's wooden spoon Fauxham.

The final matchday kicked off at 17:00 as usual. With Libertad once again claiming the right to take a last chance challenge in the relegation playoff against a Liga-2 side, and Universitario, CAP, and Fauxham returning to the second tier without much drama, all eyes were focused on the title definition. In Fontvielle Olympique took an early lead, opening the doors of illusion wide for all. With 20 minutes played, a goal by Real Campo Grande in Bezieres turned out to be the end of the title road for Les Rouges, who were still hoping for help from Bohemians, the Dragons, and TFC to cling on to the Challengers Cup berth they had prior to the start of the final matchday. After the first half hour of play, Metropolis Alligators scored against Bohemians, taking a big step towards a new back-to-back championship, whilst Canalave Dragons scored at Dragon Stadium, taking Marinos out of the fight for good. Meanwhile in Carloburgo, TFC and the Stars were playing a tense match with few chances to score and few openings conceded by either side. With most results at the other stadiums going their way, and with the Citizens having nothing to lose, the Yellow team felt that they could (and in fact, should) take more risks and started charging against the Tannenberg goal. The change in strategy seemed to have an effect, as before the halftime whistle the Stars managed to take the lead with a goal by striker Jeffrey Purcell, which temporarily moved them into second place as the Alligators continued to defeat Bohemians on their home turf.

The second half started, and Olympique managed to land another blow on l'Impact, leaving the Alligators and the Stars (barring a comeback from either Marinos or Bezieres) as the last contenders remaining for the title. However, Fontvielle Impact brought even more drama to the season finale by cutting the gap at the Stade de l'Amitié to 2-1, now needing to score another goal (plus help from either TFC or Bohemians) to have a chance to snatch the title from the Alligators and the Stars. That help eventually came, with Bohemians equalizing in Swangard to push the Titan down to third place. To the disbelief and excitement of the Stars' fans, both the 15,000 fans who made the trip to the Mountbatten state to watch the match and those who stayed behind to support from their homes, Eterna Stars were 25 minutes away from breaking their 53-year hex, and they just needed to hold on to their narrow lead over TFC. However, Tannenberg managed to equalize the game in the 80th minute in an unexpected play given the defensive discipline shown by the Eternan side in the match. By then, Fontvielle Impact were already losing 3-1, the Alligators could not find a way to break Bohemians's resistance, and Bezieres and Marinos were all but out of the race, but the combinations of results granted l'Impact and the Alligators the chance to decide the title between themselves in a tiebreaker match. The dream for the long-suffering Stars fans was once again fading away, and the elderly and most religious ones opted to look for heavenly assistance, praying to the Lord of the Miracles (whose statue has been venerated in the Eterna City area for over 200 years) to perform one of those in those final moments. And that miracle came with three minutes left in the clock, in a deadly counterattack finished by Tristan Pearson to give the victory and the title to the team coached by Martín Vásquez. There was no much time to do anything else, and when the full time whistle came, those words uttered by the lead Radio Eterna commentator to announce the Lord of the Miracles of the outcome of His intervention became a general cry of relief and release of frustrations that resounded not only at White Meadow Arena among the Eterna Stars players, staff, directors and fans, but also all over the Eterna state. Fifty-three years of pain are finally laid to rest as the Stars, one of the most traditional Valladar football clubs, lifted their third league championship, the first in the Liga-1 era.

And with both Kings' Shield finalists (Fontvielle Impact and Metropolis Alligators) finishing as league runners-up and third place, the other team who could celebrate something (albeit to a much lower scale) was Bezieres, who ended up claiming the final Challengers Cup berth ahead of a Marinos Metropolis side who ended up empty-handed in spite of their great reaction in the final half of the campaign. Well, this is the kind of heartbreaks that poor international showings can cause in the long term.

After the dramatic Liga-1 finale that left both to witness the return of Eterna Stars to the throne of Valladar football after over 50 years, Fontvielle Impact and Metropolis Alligators were left to face each other for the season's last piece of silverware in the Kings' Shield final which suitably became a "Final to End All Finals". After a tense first half at a packed National Stadium, l'Impact were eventually able to break the Titan's resistance and hit twice in the second half to claim their sixth Shield title, which also qualified them for the Cup Winners' Cup.

With Hoxford Rovers earning direct promotion after ending as Liga-2 runners-up, this time it's Libertad the one who must defend, for the second season in a row, their top tier status in an extra two-legged series against Servette FC, who reached this match after losing the most decisive Cer-vette in years in the Liga-2 playoff final. In the end, Les Grenats were able to achieve their goal and also find some consolation after beating the Zebras 2-0 in the first leg played in Servette and drawing the return leg in Lierravus, joining their arch-rivals Cerro in the top flight as the 20th and last Liga-1 team for next season and relegating Libertad to Liga-2.

Liga-1 Season 74 - Recap:

Ladies, gentlemen, and other sentient beings from all over the multiverse, the Liga Federal of Valladares is pleased to welcome you all to yet another chapter of Marinos Metropolis winning titles at the expense of their arch-rivals Metropolis Alligators, this time being their ninth Liga-1 crown. Although the title race was once again full of ups and downs, teams that began firing on all cylinders and then faded away by mid-season, and others that took a little too much to lift off but when they did they were able to give the frontrunners a run for their money, both Metropolis heavyweights proved to be the most regular sides from start to end of the season, trading the top spot between themselves every week, with Ariel Balboa and their Mariners being ultimately able to prevail and lift the Stargoal in Swangard once again.

The seventy-fourth Liga-1 season kicked off with the traditional Champions' Kickoff, which was held in Eterna City with the defending champions Eterna Stars hosting their Liga-2 counterparts Adelaide Kickers in a match where the team coached by Martín Vásquez pulled off a hard-fought 4-3 victory despite a couple of scares from the Westlander side in the first half. The Alligators, Fontvielle Impact, and Tannenberg FC also started the season on the right foot after claiming narrow wins against Bohemians Metropolis, Slateport Bulls, and Real Campo Grande, respectively, unlike Bezieres and Canalave Dragons who were stunned by two newly-promoted sides in the form of Servette and Hoxford Rovers. Meanwhile, the most interesting match that threw the Liga-1 draw for the first matchday of the season pitted South Metropolis sides Nacional and Marinos in the return of the refurbished City of Metropolis Stadium to Liga-1 activity, match that saw Marinos claim their first win of the season with a goal in the dying minutes of play. The results of the first matchday left the Rovers as the surprising first leader, but this was not to last as three of the usual suspects took over the baton for the following matchdays: l'Impact, the Alligators, and TFC made it three wins in as many outings, after defeating three fellow title contenders with the Alligators edging past Bezieres, and Les Bleus and the Citizens defeating Marinos and the defending champions Eterna Stars on MD2. The only other unbeaten sides after three games were Pradera, who were closely following the leading trio in fourth place after winning their first two matches and then being held to a scoreless draw by the Dragons, and newly-promoted Cerro, who were enjoying the early benevolence of their fixture by picking up five points in their first three matches. The perfect campaigns of Impact, Alligators, and Tannenberg would not last long, though, as the Foixien side were beaten by crosstown rivals Olympique de Fontvielle in their first derby of the season, and the latter two sides were held to scoreless stalemates by Real Campo Grande and Servette, which was still not enough to kick them out of the summit nonetheless.

With Fontvielle Impact beginning a negative streak following their loss to Olympique de Fontvielle, the Alligators and Tannenberg were joined in the battle for the top spot by Marinos and Bezieres, who were quickly able to steer back into course after their doubtful starts to the season. Although Ariel Balboa's side had only lost to Impact on the second matchday and by the sixth weekend of Liga-1 action could count their remaining five matches as wins (which helped them become league leaders at that point), their style of play did not completely satisfy their fans, especially considering that they had played "weak" rivals such as Étoile Verte, Edmonton United and Hoxford Rovers and they were only able to get narrow wins against them. As for Les Rouges, their loss to the Alligators on MD3 was a turning point for their early campaign as they went on to chain five straight wins (one of those being against Impact in the first Derby du Foix of the season) which helped them climb up to third place behind both Metropolis heavyweights. With teams such as the Stars, Canalave Dragons, and Junín floating in the middle of the table and hoping to put together a winning streak to start threatening the leading pack, two "surprise packages" in the form of Bohemians Metropolis and Pradera FC have sneaked into the upper half of the table, even getting within striking distance of the leading sides. Precisely, the Verdiblancos were the ones to put an end to Marinos' winning streak after overcoming a two-goal disadvantage in their match at the Estadio de la Montaña to win 3-2, whilst the Gallo had a similar path to Marinos, recovering from a harsh 4-0 loss to Fontvielle Impact with successive wins against Étoile Verte, Edmonton, and the Rovers. However, things were not looking good in the start of the season for teams such as Nacional, Slateport Bulls, and Real Campo Grande, all of them struggling in the lower half of the table and counting half of their matches as losses. La Academia seemed to suffer the sudden influx of recent Guzmán-Cress Academy graduates, who were still experiencing trouble to get some chemistry with the more experienced players, which in turn caused the team to drop unexpected points against Bohemians (to whom they lost 3-0 in the Derby Abuelo) and Servette (who held them to a scoreless draw in the Metropolis suburbs), leaving them in an uncomfortable 14th place with just 8 points. Real Campo Grande and the Bulls were having their own issues as well, with the former being unable to live to their reputation as a very strong team at home, having just won one match in the heights of Campo Grande, while the latter had a tough early fixture and also suffered losses that were not in the plans against teams such as Étoile Verte and the Rovers. However, the most difficult situation was being experienced by one-time champions Edmonton United, who kicked off the season with eight straight losses, only being able to cut that losing streak after bravely fighting back to rescue a 2-2 draw at home against the Stars. Although the Monties later capitulated in their visit to TFC in Carloburgo, they could eventually get some much-wanted relief by blowing up Servette at Albert Field on MD11.

As the season was reaching halfway point, it became more evident that the title race was going to have the Alligators, Marinos, and Bezieres as the main contenders, with the three sides exchanging the top three positions and the Titan claiming the "winter championship" on goal difference after drawing Marinos at Estadio Zachary Fortin on MD19 whilst Pradera, Tannenberg, and Fontvielle Impact placed themselves behind that leading trio. The Verdiblancos managed to stay close to the top three by claiming important victories such as the one in the Western Valladares derby against the Citizens, and also took advantage of the fact that both Impact and TFC started losing ground as they started drawing matches. Although both sides still had in the meantime some moments of brilliance such as Impact's win over the Alligators in the first Derby de Valladares of the season at the Stade de la Frontière and a 5-2 win for Tannenberg over Marinos at White Meadow Arena, they still dropped several points in the following matches, which caused them to reach halfway point with 9 draws. Fortunately for them, neither side stopped getting points, which kept them within a reasonable distance from the leaders. However, the news were coming from the lower half of the table with Nacional's sudden recovery, as the Albo squad began an impressive comeback with a 1-0 win over the Alligators in the Derby Añejo at Swangard on MD10, which saw them move from 13th place with 11 points to 6th place with 27 points by MD18. Starting from the derby match, Nacional manager Jonathan Bosetti tried a tactical variation, morphing the 4-4-2 formation the team had been using from the start of the tournament to a less static 4-3-3 which would allow for more offensive volume and would also suit better the players coming from the GCA who were more offense-minded. With this new tactical disposition, La Academia finally found the way and started regaining ground, positioning themselves in the middle of the pack along with the Dragons and Olympique de Fontvielle, while other sides such as Junín, the defending champions Eterna Stars (who were slowly returning to their reality after their wonderful previous season), Real Campo Grande, and Slateport Bulls (who were just starting a timid reaction after being in the bottom four for most of the first half of the season) were still in a slumber that would move them away from the IFCF battle and could instead drag them to the less desired battle for survival. Speaking of which, the Rovers, Servette, Étoile Verte, and Edmonton were to start the final half of the season in serious danger, with Cerro barely placing ahead of them and the Liga-2 champions Adelaide Kickers enjoying a relatively comfortable cushion thanks to vital points they snatched from several contenders in the dawn of the season.

The three-horse battle between Metropolis Alligators, Marinos Metropolis, and AS Bezieres for the title and the Champions League spots was the main highlight for the decisive second half of the season, as none of the three sides was willing to give ground in the fight. The first direct clash between them in the final stretch had Les Rouges claim a vital win over the Alligators to keep themselves within striking distance of the leaders, which in turn was fully capitalized by Marinos, who took the lead by beating Étoile Verte in the complement of the double Metropolis-Bezieres duel. However, the 11-time Valladar champions were unable to follow this up as they went on to chain two losses in a row, one of those being a painful 4-1 defeat to Fontvielle Impact at home in the rematch of the Derby du Foix which left Bezieres trailing Marinos by seven points, effectively leaving the battle for the title as a matter for two: the two Metropolis juggernauts. With Marinos and the Alligators slowly opening up a gap with the rest, the IFCF race (which suprisingly reverted to offer international berths up to the fourth place) started to get in the spotlight with nine teams (Pradera, Tannenberg, Bezieres, Olympique, Impact, Nacional, Canalave Dragons, the Bulls, and the Stars) being separated by seven points. The Verdiblancos, who thanks to these recent slip ups for Bezieres managed to sneak into third place, seemed to be on course for a return to international competition on account of their strong home performance as well as snatching important points against important rivals including the leading duo, however, with teams such as Nacional, Olympique and Slateport Bulls on an upward curve, and the likes of Tannenberg and the Foixien titans being fully capable to pull up a winning streak at any moment, this battle was going to be wide open until the end. Whilst the temporary ownership of the two Challengers Cup berths for the third and fourth place constantly rotated between Pradera, Bezieres and Nacional, the Alligators and Marinos kept their heated head-to-head race for the title without being able to open up a gap with the other side: when the Titan lost or drew a match and granted Marinos an opening to further extend their lead on the following matchday, the Marineros botched it and allowed the Alligators to strike back and regain the lead, thus increasing the chances of an additional final match to the one they would most likely have on the final round of the tournament.

And the final ten matches of the campaign came, with Marinos leading with 56 points, the Alligators trailing by a single point, and Bezieres embarking on a new winning streak that saw them beat two relegation candidates in Étoile Verte and Edmonton and then two IFCF hopefuls in the Dragons and Pradera to get back at threatening both Metropolis sides to place themselves in third with 54, leaving fourth place for Pradera, Nacional and Fontvielle Impact to kill each other for it. Olympique de Fontvielle and Slateport Bulls, both finding themselves 6 points adrift from fourth-placed Pradera, started to detach themselves from the battle, so did Tannenberg who went on a horrid 9-match winless streak that made them plummet from the top three down to mid-table, and the Stars and Canalave Dragons, who also found it difficult to chain consecutive wins to keep up with the remaining contenders. Meanwhile, an unexpected reaction by an Edmonton side that was deemed to be doomed as soon as halfway point brought some much-needed spice to the relegaton race, with the Monties slowly climbing up positions to leave the cellar and place themselves in the relegation playoff spot. Unlike them, Étoile Verte, the Rovers, and Servette remained unresponsive and seemed to be headed to Liga-2 without much hassle, but those who had no peace of mind were Real Campo Grande and the Kickers, who saw themselves increasingly threatened by Edmonton. The Verdolagas were having a pretty poor campaign that made their fans start thinking in a possible new foray into the second tier of Valladar football, whilst the Liga-2 champions ran out of savings at the worst possible moment, and a string of positive results for Cerro just made things worse for both Real and the Kickers as the Celeste slowly moved away from the red zone.

With five matches to go, the Alligators and Marinos were both determined to settle the championship in their final meeting at Swangard on the final day of the season, without allowing any outsider to make a late charge for the title, as they kept third-placed Bezieres five points adrift. Les Rouges would have a more important matter to resolve in defending their Challengers Cup berth, with Fontvielle Impact, Nacional, and (to nearly everyone's surprise) Olympique de Fontvielle also coveting one of those two berths. Precisely, Bezieres had a dangerous setback in that race after being thumped by Olympique at home, allowing Les Jaune-et-Bleus to cut their gap to just one point, which was also fully capitalized by Impact and Nacional who also got within striking distance of them and pushed Edmonton and the Rovers closer to the relegation abyss in the process. In addition to this, an unlikely contender ended up joining the battle ahead of its climax: Slateport Bulls. Although the Bulls suffered losses to Real Campo Grande and the Stars and also dropped valuable points with a draw with Junín in the Far East, the fact that Bezieres, Olympique, Nacional, and l'Impact were unable to detach from each other opened the path for the Bulls to rejoin the race as they bounced back by beating Servette, TFC, and taking three points away from the Alligators which could have helped the Titan in their particular battle against Marinos. The qualification of Fontvielle Impact and Nacional for the Kings' Shield final also left the doors of hope for the Bulls wide open since a potential spot could be opened for the league's fifth-placed side.

And so, we reached the final matchday with this panorama:

The Alligators and Marinos headed to their final match with Champions League qualification clinched and hoping that the title would be decided there with a win for either side. A draw would drag the definition of the title to a tiebreaker match. Things in the Challengers Cup front were less clear, though, with Bezieres, Olympique, Nacional, Fontvielle Impact, and Slateport Bulls with realistic chances to qualify for the competition. With Nacional and Fontvielle Impact having qualified for the Kings' Shield final, there was a chance that the fifth-placed team could qualify for IFCF football, but the five contenders wanted to leave the matter settled with a top four finish. Bezieres and Olympique de Fontvielle, as the teams coming to the final day in third and fourth place, were the only ones solely depending on themselves, but had to confirm their berths away against Tannenberg and Servette (who had confirmed their relegation on the previous matchday after losing to Bohemians), respectively. Nacional and Slateport Bulls had a life-or-death duel at the City of Metropolis Stadium, whilst Fontvielle Impact hosted a desperate Cerro looking to make the final effort for safety. In the relegation front, with Servette already sure to return to Liga-2, and Adelaide Kickers all but saved, Edmonton United, Cerro, Étoile Verte, and Hoxford Rovers were left with the mission to avoid joining Les Grenats in the second tier. Except for Cerro, all of them had the relative advantage to play their final league match at home, with the Monties hosting the Dragons at Albert Field, Étoile Verte playing Pradera in the Foixien capital, and the Rovers playing the derby against the Kickers at Westlands Stadium (although the Kickers were the actual home side in this one, but it's the Rovers' home stadium as well so no-one really cares).

The final matchday kicked off at 17:00 (16:00 in the Westlands) as usual. And in less than 10 minutes, the relegation finale started delivering the first news as the Kickers were already 2-0 up against the Rovers and confirming the latter's return to Liga-2. Returning to the mainland, Étoile Verte also took the lead against Pradera, and with Edmonton and Cerro both drawing their matches, Les Verts were saving their skins from the relegation fire and leaving Edmonton in the playoff spot and Cerro relegated. The IFCF front started moving with a goal by Olympique de Fontvielle against Servette, taking l'OF to third place ahead of Bezieres who were still unable to even threaten Tannenberg's defense. Right at the first half hour of play, it was Fontvielle Impact's turn to score, leapfrogging Les Rouges for fourth place on H2H GD and forcing them to root for their arch-rival in the Shield's final if things ended that way in order not to miss the Challengers Cup train. This goal by l'Impact was also celebrated in Edmonton as it confirmed Cerro as the last side directly relegated to Liga-2. Meanwhile, the Derby Metropolitano was an affair navigating from tension to excessive caution, as the Alligators and Marinos were unable to harm each other and seemed to be willing to postpone the title definition for at least three days more and at a place away from the federal capital. The first half ended with the Metropolis sides still unable to break their deadlock, the Fontvielle sides starting filling up their Challengers Cup entry forms, Bezieres in the wait list to join them, the Kickers and Étoile Verte confirming their salvation, Edmonton in the playoff limbo, and Cerro and Hoxford Rovers (who conceded yet another goal right before the halftime whistle) set to join Servette in Liga-2 next season.

The second half started, and the knot of the title began to unravel after just three minutes, with Marinos taking the lead at Swangard in a blitzing counterattack finished by striker Rafael Mathías. The goal, as expected, forced Metropolis Alligators to come up firing on all cylinders in search of the equalizer, which was once again capitalized by Marinos to double their lead with Mathías scoring a brace ten minutes later to leave the championship out of reach for the Titan and put the Marineros within minutes of celebrating their ninth domestic crown. The other big news also came from the federal capital, with Nacional scoring against the Bulls to move themselves into third place and put Bezieres into serious trouble as they fell down to sixth and out of any chance to qualify for the Challengers Cup. And although Impact were now in fifth, the fact that they were to play La Academia in the Kings' Shield final made it a win-win situation for them so they were not really worried. Although Bezieres were still unable to break Tannenberg's resistance, things for them started to change for good as Servette staged a comeback against Olympique within five minutes, sending Les Jaune-et-Bleus down to seventh place and returning Bezieres to fifth place. Ultimately Olympique were able to salvage a point from their visit to Servette's Stade Municipal but it only helped them move into sixth place. As for the relegation contention, a goal by the Dragons with 10 minutes to go was the finishing blow for Edmonton's hopes of direct salvation, although Cerro's loss to Fontvielle Impact ended up helping them claim the relegation play-off berth. The final whistles sounded, and although in the case of the Derby Metropolitano it took a little longer given that some Alligators fans got uneasy in the stands, Marinos once again ruined a party set up by the Alligators and made a new victory lap in front of their arch-rivals, closing out another victorious season that will likely be remembered for a long time by the fans of the now nine-time champions. And to close the Metropolitan teams' campaign with a flourish, Nacional made it to the Shield final and were eventually able to claim the last step of the league podium as well as a much-wanted return to international football with their win over the Bulls, hoping to lay the foundation stone for another successful team led by graduates from their youth ranks. The fourth place was claimed by Fontvielle Impact, who had to endure a rather unusual drawing streak halfway into the season, which was arguably the main factor preventing Pierre Renquin's side from challenging Marinos and the Alligators for the title. However, Les Bleus still had one last chance to add some silverware to their trophy case in the Kings' Shield final against Nacional.

Although Bezieres dropped down to fifth place with their draw with TFC in Carloburgo, Les Rouges were ultimately able to claim the last berth into the Challengers Cup regardless of the outcome of the Kings' Shield thanks to Fontvielle Impact and Nacional both reaching the final of the national cup competition, and this time the good news also extended to Fontvielle's yellow half, given that with the Valladar Football Association announcing their intention to enter the new regional competition Copa del Ganso, there was now a chance for two additional teams to have international competition next season and it was announced that Olympique de Fontvielle, for being the best-placed team that missed out on IFCF competition, would be tentatively one of the teams to take part, with the other berth into that competition being awarded to the women's league champions Ajax Carloburgo.

With Fontvielle Impact and Nacional ending the Liga-1 season in third and fourth place, the Kings' Shield was not just the moment for the season's last piece of silverware to be handed over but also to decide who would enter the next Challengers Cup one round later and also qualify for the Cup Winners' Cup. Whilst Nacional managed to keep l'Impact at bay for most of the match, a defensive blink by La Academia allowed the Foixien side to equalize with five minutes to go in regular time and drag the match to 30 minutes of extra time and then to a penalty shootout in which Fontvielle Impact goalkeeper Steven Piatti was instrumental to give the Hexachampion their seventh Kings' Shield title as well as qualification for the next Cup Winners' Cup (and starting from this season, the Copa de Campeones as well).

The "last chance challenge" for the final spot in the next Liga-1 season this time had two interesting contenders in the form of Edmonton United (barely avoiding direct relegation and sending Cerro down on H2H) and Libertad, who were still looking to make an immediate return to the top tier of Valladar football after edging past tough rivals such as Fauxham and Universitario de Maldonado and losing to the Rangers in a dramatic final match in Swangard. The first leg played in Lierravus ended with both sides sharing the spoils with a 1-1 draw which put the Monties on the driver's seat ahead of the return leg in the Westlands, but Libertad were able to endure 90 minutes of a merciless siege by the Westlander side at Albert Field and later hit at the right moment to confirm their swift return to Liga-1 as well as a new relegation to Liga-2 for Edmonton, much to the chagrin of their faithful.

Although Westporte 984 were able to shock two strong contenders for promotion in the form of Alianza Antioquia and Dynamo Metropolis just to capitulate soundly to Montreux in the Liga-3 playoffs, their dream of promotion was further extended as they got the chance to play the promotion playoff against Danubio, who were coming off avoiding relegation from Liga-2 in dramatic fashion on the final matchday. However, the Colorado proved that they had no plans to play in the third tier next season and defended their status as a second tier team by beating 984 in both matches of the series without much trouble.

Liga-1 Season 75 - Recap:

The seventy-fifth Liga-1 season brought the end of another long title drought, with AS Bezieres claiming their twelfth championship and first in 14 seasons. While previous seasons were similar to a rollercoaster ride with the top spots in the championship changing hands constantly and with drama on several fronts building up until the final day, this time Les Rouges took first place relatively early and didn't relinquish it for the remainder of the season, although there were some teams that did try to put pressure on and did their part to push the championship definition until the final day of the season.

This new season had its starting line in Metropolis, with the defending champions Marinos Metropolis welcoming their Liga-2 counterparts CAP at Estadio Zachary Fortin for a new edition of the Champions' Kickoff, in which the Marineros made a strong statement by picking up a 5-2 victory. Fontvielle Impact and Deportivo Junín also made short work of the other newcomers, with the former thumping Libertad and the latter beating Canalave Rangers in the Far East, while sides such as Olympique de Fontvielle, the Dragons, Pradera and the Bulls also kicked off the season on the right foot. However, the same cannot be said about Nacional, who were stunned in their visit to Villafuerte where they lost to Defensores with an early goal. The remaining two matches were the ones that caught the attention of most in this opening day, with Tannenberg defeating Bezieres in a five-goal thriller at White Meadow Arena and the Alligators narrowly beating the Stars in Eterna City. Although Marinos became the first leaders of the season by scoring five past CAP, their offense was stopped cold against Junín in the following match, in which the Granate side made it two wins in two outings courtesy of an impressive defensive performance and a deadly counterattack, going top of the league along with Fontvielle Impact who handed fellow south Metropolis side Nacional their second defeat in as many matches. Slateport Bulls also claimed a second win in a row after beating TFC, with Defensores being the surprising fourth and last team with perfect record, defeating Pradera in the Antioquia state derby. Despite having punctured in their short trip to Los Chorros by only drawing with CAP, Metropolis Alligators were the final unbeaten team after just two matches, with everyone else having either a "1" or a "2" in their losses column.

As the first quarter of Liga-1 action took place, the battle for first place initially seemed to be between Fontvielle Impact and Deportivo Junín, who exchanged the top spot during the first ten rounds of the season, precisely until MD10 when both sides were scheduled to play each other. Although Les Bleus' unbeaten run ended on Matchday 5 with a derby loss against Olympique, Pierre Renquin's team managed to emerge relatively unscathed from a tough run of matches, which included games against Pradera, the Bulls, Marinos, and the Derby du Foix in which they shared the spoils with Bezieres, whilst the Granate side kept pace by beating TFC and the Alligators and snatching a draw from Campo Grande prior to their showdown against l'Impact, in which the Hexachampions were able to break the 20-point barrier and open up a two-point gap at the top by claiming victory, whilst the Juninese side dropped to third place, whilst teams such as Bezieres and three of the four Metropolitan representatives (except for Nacional) watched with anticipation, taking the remaining positions in the top 5 of the league after 10 games.

Precisely this was the time for Bezieres to make their move. Despite having started the season on the wrong foot by losing to Tannenberg in Carloburgo, which anticipated yet another rough season for the third most successful team in the Valladar league, Les Rouges were able to get their act together pretty quickly, bouncing back with wins over Étoile Verte in their city derby, the Dragons in the open-air oven called Canalave, the Stars, Adelaide Kickers, and Libertad, while also stealing a point from Fontvielle Impact in the first leg of the Derby du Foix, being only stopped by the Alligators who were also determined to join the race for the summit, drifting between third and fourth place since the start of the season. All they needed was a stumble by Fontvielle Impact to capitalize on, which didn't take too long to come as l'Impact ended up returning from Campo Grande empty-handed. Whilst none of Junín or the Metropolis heavyweights were able to take advantage of this, Bezieres would not waste the chance, beating a struggling Nacional side to join their arch-rivals at the top and only being separated from them by four goals. Further setbacks for Les Bleus against Tannenberg and a Bohemians side who were surprising everyone by staying close to the race for the top spot enabled Les Rouges to claim the leadership for themselves, building up a four-point cushion on a Junín side who returned to second place by derailing the Alligators' own ambitions. Bezieres took the lead on MD12 and never let it go, claiming the winter championship with two matches in hand, with Junín managing to cling on to second place despite the pressure from the powerful Fontvielle Impact and Metropolis Alligators, as well as Bohemians who reached the midpoint of the season in an unexpected fourth place.

Although l'Impact and the Alligators tried to keep up with the other member of their triumvirate who by this point seemed poised to run away with the championship without much opposition, a dip in form in their last games of the first round (especially on the Alligators' side) allowed Canalave Dragons to sneak into third place, leaving both juggernauts out of the IFCF zone just before the start of the real battle, with other sides such as Slateport Bulls, Olympique de Fontvielle, Marinos, Nacional, and Tannenberg also navigating the treacherous waters of the middle of the table and struggling to get some regularity in their performance to be able to compete for the international berths. Meanwhile, the battle to avoid relegation seemed to be shaping up with the expected subjects in the form of Canalave Rangers, CAP, Defensores, and Étoile Verte, while Real Campo Grande, Pradera, and Adelaide Kickers were placed in a rather uncomfortable position, and the Stars finding themselves in a limbo, knowing that a good or bad streak could take them anywhere.

With Bezieres quickly widening up the gap between them and their pursuers, even taking it to 11 points after defeating arch-rivals Impact in their Derby du Foix rematch, the question to answer for the decisive second half of the season moved to the potential IFCF qualifiers for this season, with 11 teams fighting for three spots. While Deportivo Junín, the Dragons, and Bohemians tried their best to quell the pressure from their rivals in the race and defend their positions in the top four, things turned upside down for them after the three sides suffered harsh losses on MD23, with Granates and Dragons being thrashed by Real Campo Grande and Pradera, two sides in desperate need of points to fend off the relegation ghost, and Bohemians losing to Marinos at home, which in turn allowed Fontvielle Impact, Metropolis Alligators and Slateport Bulls to replace these three sides in the top four, with Marinos taking the Bulls' place in the immediate following matchday after the latter were beaten by l'Impact. While those defeats were the beginning of the end for Junín and Bohemians' international aspirations, who never again came close to the top four, a door also opened for teams that were showing an interesting reaction at the dawn of the second half of the season, such as Nacional and Libertad. Just like last season, La Academia took its time to gel, with a slow and hesitant start. But when its young squad finally found its rhythm, the team managed to stabilize in the middle of the table, and circumstances (and rivals, of course) worked in their favor, bringing them closer to the international qualification spots as they managed to jump up from tenth to fifth place with three wins in a row. Meanwhile, Lierravus's team, newly returned to the top flight, quickly distanced itself from the relegation battle thanks to unexpected and timely victories. The inconsistency of other teams in turn also allowed them to slip into the top half of the table, starting to dream of an unprecedented international qualification. And to make things even more interesting, the Real Campo Grande side which prior to the start of the final half of the season seemed doomed to fight for its survival, strung together an incredible run of victories that took it, in just ten matches, from suffering through relegation to the upper half of the table, and start thinking about performing another "miracle": IFCF qualification. Meanwhile, the Bezieres side that was confidently heading towards its twelfth star without much hassle began to give ground with a series of setbacks such as scoreless draws against the Stars and the Alligators, and a loss to the resurgent Nacional, allowing Fontvielle Impact to cut the gap at the top to just four points while also restoring the title hopes of Marinos and the Alligators.

And the final ten matches of the campaign came, with Bezieres leading with 58 points, four clear of Impact, and with the two Metropolis heavyweights a little further back, Marinos' 51 points granting them third place ahead of the Alligators' 50. The news here is that these four sides managed to detach themselves from the rest of the pack, with fifth-placed Nacional trailing the Titan by five points and being left along with the Dragons, Libertad, Real Campo Grande, Junín, and Tannenberg to fight for the consolation award in a potential qualification for the Copa del Ganso. Against all odds, Bezieres' decision to drop points when they had everything to quickly settle the championship turned what seemed like a foregone conclusion into a four-way battle also involving three of their fiercest rivals, who also had their share of spice to add to the definition as demonstrated in a hot Derby Metropolitano between Marinos and the Alligators at Parque Rushmore, won by the latter 4-3. And while Impact and the Alligators tried to close the gap by securing victories, Bezieres continued to do their part to further intensify the fight by dropping more points after losing to the Bulls and being held to a draw by Canalave Rangers, who at this point were already preparing their return to Liga-2. The fears of the Rouge fans that the title could still slip away were eventually realized with three matches to go after the team was defeated by Marinos, which in turn put both Fontvielle Impact and Metropolis Alligators within striking distance of Bezieres, who were still on top with 68 points, but were only separated from both of their rivals by one and two points, respectively. And although Marinos were still with a slim hope to complete a successful title defense, that loss in the Derby as well as an untimely setback in their visit to Pradera seriously dented the Marineros' aspirations, leaving them trailing Les Rouges by five points in spite of that big win over them. With Marinos all but out of the title equation, and left to focus on a potential Kings' Shield title, it was l'Impact's moment to falter after losing two critical matches against the Stars and...the Derby de Valladares to the Alligators, which reduced the potential champions to only two teams: Bezieres and the Alligators, forcing both Impact and Marinos to settle with Challengers Cup berths.

And so, we reached the final matchday with this panorama:

The potential celebrations for Rouges and Alligators at the end of the day would have to be away from home, as the former visited the capital to play Bohemians and the latter would have a hard task in Canalave against the Dragons. Bezieres would win the title by winning or if the Dragons avoided defeat against the Alligators, whilst MA required to win and hope for their old rivals Bohemians to beat the Rouge side, whilst a combination of an Alligators win and a draw for Bezieres would drag the definition to a tiebreaker match. With Marinos having clinched qualification for the Challengers Cup while also being set to play Deportivo Junín in the Kings' Shield final, a potential fifth IFCF berth was opened up, with Eterna Stars having a three-point lead on both Nacional and Libertad for it. By drawing the already relegated CAP, the Stars would only have to root for Marinos to win the cup in order to return to the international arena, whilst both Nacional and Libertad needed to win (La Academia were away at Étoile Verte and Libertad faced a Defensores side who were still fighting to avoid the relegation play-off) and hope for the Eternan side to lose in order to keep a chance. Things in the lower half of the table were all but settled, with Canalave Rangers, CAP, and Étoile Verte already relegated, leaving the identity of the team that would have to play the relegation play-off still to be decided between Adelaide Kickers, Defensores, and Bohemians.

The final matchday turned out to be quite anticlimactic, since Bezieres' title was never really at risk even though Les Rouges capitulated to Bohemians (who confirmed their presence in the top flight for next season with this win). The Alligators, who were the only side able to snatch the Stargoal from Bezieres' hands, found themselves down at Canalave in just five minutes of play and were only able to find the equalizer when the match was about to end, dooming themselves to yet another runner-up finish. By the time the Alligators got to score a goal in Canalave, in Bezieres they were already uncorking the champagne and celebrating the twelfth title and the end of the bad streak for Les Rouges. The bronze medals were eventually claimed by Fontvielle Impact, who ended up confirming the stay of Bohemians and Defensores in the top flight by defeating the Kickers, who would have the relegation play-off as their final chance to confirm their status as a Liga-1 team, whilst Marinos' alternate squad narrowly beat a brave Rangers side in their swansong from Liga-1.

Speaking of brave displays from relegated sides when nothing mattered anymore, CAP destroyed the hopes of Challengers Cup participation for the Stars by defeating them 1-0 in Los Chorros, which in turn opened the door for Nacional to end the season in fifth place by winning at the Stade de Charmilliot, while at the same time Libertad missed their big chance to enter a top-tier IFCF competition for the first time with a boring scoreless draw in Villafuerte. Marinos' eventual victory at the Kings' Shield ended up taking Nacional back to the Challengers Cup for next season, while the Stars were ultimately able to salvage something from their great final sprint, clinching qualification for the Copa del Ganso along with the women's league champions Ajax Carloburgo.

The Kings' Shield final pitted two teams with different goals against each other; Marinos came into this match with qualification for the Challengers Cup already confirmed, and were only looking to add another trophy to their collection, while Deportivo Junín was not only looking to salvage the season with a title but also to secure the last international spot available, after their performance declined during the second half of the season. Although Junín were able to deliver an early scare with a goal scored from the penalty mark after just 10 minutes of play, the Marineros were able to turn things around with their superior hierarchy and answered thrice to become the second team to reach the two-digit tally in the Kings' Shield as well as secure qualification for the next Cup Winners' Cup and Copa de Campeones, while also confirming Nacional's qualification for the Challengers Cup.

The "last chance challenge" for the final spot in the next Liga-1 season this time was an all-Westlands affair between Adelaide Kickers and an Edmonton United side who precisely lost their status as a Liga-1 club in this series last season and were looking for a different outcome this time after missing two chances to promote this season. And after two hard-fought matches that ended in draws and 210 minutes of football, the third time was the charm for the Monties, who proved to be slightly better in the penalty shootout to get the Westlands capital back to its rightful place in the top flight.

Having staged two major upsets in the Liga-3 playoffs by dooming Dynamo Metropolis and EC Comercial to another season in the third tier, tenth-placed side Ajax were prevented from claiming promotion by another surprise package in the form of Atlético Nápoles. However, the Immigrants were not willing to waste a chance to cause another upset in their final attempt at promotion, defeating Celtic at home and holding them to a draw in Eterna City to claim an unlikely return to Liga-2.
