BoF, Matchday 2 vs West Vdara, End of Match

Come on. Juno was desperate to equalize. It was the 93rd minute, and this was her last chance to score. With a swift breakaway, she made her move, bolting past defenders and driving the ball up the field. "Come on," she whispered under her breath. She noticed Anon out of the corner of her eye. However, with adrenaline flowing through her, she didn't pass to them. After all, they hadn't been able to find the equalizer yet. She found herself just outside the box, with no one in her sight but the goalkeeper themself. She drew a breath and kicked the ball with all her might. It went wide. The final whistle blew. The game ended 1-0.

Abraham was disappointed, Anon was frustrated, Iris was annoyed, and Acorn was smiley as usual, although even he was looking down at the grass. Juno collapsed to the grass on her hands and knees. She was all of them; disappointed, frustrated, and annoyed, but more than that, she felt a weird sense of excitement. There were only five of them, and West Vdara had an 18-person roster with the entire country behind them. Yet, despite all that, in front of a massive crowd of West Vdaran supporters, the few had managed to nearly check the team for the whole match. So, now, she realized, we gotta beat East Leaf, don't we? Staring at the ground, a smile briefly crept onto her face.

She pulled herself together and got back up, donning a serious expression. Anon came up to her and patted her on the back. "Nice try," they said, solemnly.

BoF, Matchday 3 vs East Leaf, Day Before Match

"Hi, I'll get a large soy latté and a chocolate donut," Abraham said before rudely being slapped in the back of the head by Anon. "What?" he said, turning around.

"Really?" Anon asked rhetorically. "Just get a bagel or something if you want food and just ask for a coffee, don't get any fancy shit." Their arms were crossed behind him in line. They'd actually been quite excited to try one of Sharpe's famous brews, but their expression at this moment was serious. They couldn't stand by and let Abraham order whatever mess he wanted.

"Come on," Abraham replied. "Fine." He turned back to the worker behind the register. "Could you scratch that order, sorry, I'm just getting a large coffee with milk and…" He thought for a moment.

"Is that everything?" the cashier asked.

"Yeah, that's all," Abraham replied, deciding to forgo the food.

By the time they had gotten their order, the rest of the team already sat down at the table. Thing two was at the table too, shimmering from the light of the adjacent window. Despite the loss they had taken in the previous match and the "all-or-nothing" nature of their final match, the team was surprisingly lax and optimistic for the finale of the group stage.

Iris took a sip of her coffee. "I feel like, it's like, Hapilopper is nice. Like, that NSSCRA shit was ass but like all the food is great 'n they got all the nice hotels for us 'n shit."

"I still can't believe you didn't like the stock racing stuff," Acorn replied. It had been exhilarating for him, watching his racer's car flying around the track, just like watching track & field back home. Well, sort of, it was like a different kind of racing, and it interested him.

"Oh," Juno interjected, "Abe's here." Abraham came with just his coffee in hand, a very dark brown lightened only by the small portion of milk poured into it.

"You got any coachin' for us?" Iris said.

"So I did my research on East Leaf and watched back the matches," Abraham began, "and it seems like the big goal scoring threats are number 28 and number 40." He began taking out his phone and pulling out pictures of the two players, Raiden Nakayama #28 and Enomoto Kyo #40. "So, this number 28, Raiden Nakayama, has straight-up been playing pro level football since before he was 10. He started playing in 2012 East Leaf time and that was at least 11 years ago."* The eyes of the Godlands players already let up when they heard this, but Abraham kept going. "Despite only having joined recently, their number 40 Enomoto Kyo is also in theory just as good of a player. He hasn't proven his finishing skills yet though so no one knows if he's really allat."

*(OOC: East Leaf, if this was a mistake, you can always TG or DM me and I'll change the RP).

"Is that all we're looking out for coach?" Anon said, taking a seat at the table. Their mug was filled with a rich Classic Hampton Whole Bean Blend dark roast. "Good ass coffee by the way," they said, taking another sip.

"They've got some good synergy in the back, but nothing we can't handle," he replied. "Beyond that, I don't think they have too much depth."

"Well," Juno began, "can't be that bad." She smiled, taking another sip of coffee.

Kronbia's team snatches its second victory in a row

The match was strong between the two teams, but in the 36th minute Oscar Galindo scored Langenia's first goal after several passes that confused Kronbia's defenses. In the second half, Kronbia's defense seemed to put more pressure on Langenia's attack. In the 65th minute, Ismael Gabriel scored the draw for Kronbia from a long-range missile that landed in Langenia's goal. In the 76th minute, Ovidio Florencio scored the winning goal from a counterattack to put Kronpia in the round of 16. However, in the 88th minute, Langenia almost equalized with a goal by Daniel Gallegos, but it was canceled due to offside after a VAR review. Kronpia’s team morale rose and the hopes and ambitions of the team’s fans to achieve a distinguished position or Maybe even win the championship.

"Comrades! From far-flung lands comes more glorious news for the nation, as a victory for all workers against religious heretics has secured our country's qualification to the next stage of the Baptism of Fire! Clearly, our sporting prowess is one to be feared throughout the tournament - and perhaps the world. The 'Godlands' were certainly no match by any means: too few players, too little workers' spirit!"

The bushy-moustached sports correspondent appeared on screen again.

"Exactly right! Though the capitalist sympathiser disguised as a referee may have tried to take us away from the path of glory through an overly unequal distribution of yellow cards, the scoring prowess of Sergei Dimitrakopoulos was enough to overcome this inherent bias by a goal to nil. Truly another excellent show of defiance against attempted capitalist interference! Surely they now know not to try such pitiful acts now that they have been proven unsuccessful? Alas, we shall never know until the next fixture. Or perhaps, in fact, we will, because the referee is here with us."

The suited 'tactical analysts' from beforehand dragged the referee into the frame, with his nose bandaged.

"Aha, the agent of Chania has arrived! Tell us, mister referee, why did you so deviously choose to try and sabotage the efforts of West Vdara?"

"I didn't sabotage shit! Your guys' players just kept making rash tackles!"

"So that is what they call a fair challenge now... you see, people at home, this is just one mere example of how the treacherous pigdogs over in Crete function. They infiltrate other institutions to try and knock down the foundations we so proudly build, and then blame it all on us. For shame!"

"I don't even know where Crete is, and I hope you're paying for my medical bills!"

"Ahhh, medical bills, another foreign capitalist concept. The East Vdarans have clearly gotten into your head, poor soul. Very well, we shall let you go. Scamper off, now, traitor!"

The 'tactical analysts' unclasped their grip on the referee, who ran away without daring to look back.

"I hope you all enjoyed our impromptu example of 'How to Deal With a Chanian Spy'. Hopefully, should all things be respected equally, our next fixture will proceed without incident. Back to the studio!"

The video of the flag on loop reappeared on screen.

"Indeed, what a result, and how great it is to see an East Vdaran sympathiser get the treatment they deserve - glory be to West Vdara! Alas, the show must go on, and what better way to continue this sho- I mean, totally unbiased news report, than to provide some positive news? For starters, the tremors emanating from the volcanic island of [island] have been discovered to be entirely unrelated to natural geological activity! The real reason was a particularly rowdy rave festival on the island which was limited to party officials only. Apart from this, there is nothing to report. Thank you for watching and listening to Channel 2 Kanaria, and make sure to tune in following the next match to see how our valiant comrades do on the international phrase!"

The West Vdarans' next fixture would take place at the David Coney Field at Sharpe's Stadium in East Hampton, which has inspired some artists to create this wondrous graphic.

CUTOFF
For Groups D (Hapilopper City), E (Wreckeria), F (Hampton Cities) - All RPs for these groups after this cutoff will count for the Round of 16.
Many teams in the Baptism of Fire find they're Flirting with Disaster. Cutoff Song: Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster

Every cutoff will come with an RP prompt to help you think of any ideas to write a roleplay that could help your chances.

The writing prompts posted on the cutoffs are here to help you figure out what to write about. They are purely optional, and RPs that do not follow the prompts will NOT be penalized in any way. RPs that do follow the prompts will not be graded any differently than those that don't.

"The group stage round comes to an end today, both in Hapilopper and Tumbra. For some of you, your Baptism of Fire will end with this match, while for others, it goes on with the knockouts. Either way, what have you and your team learned that you can take to the World Cup 97 qualifications, when you face some of the multiverse's best teams?"

Penguins get first international win!
Image

17/7/24 - Lake Sprague, Hapilopper

The team has grown somewhat accustomed to Hapilopper by now, despite the fact that none of them had traveled abroad or even within Avisora. There couldn't have been a better country to travel for the first time though, and many of the players have found that Hapilopper and Avisora have many things in common, even the flag colors! The perceived sense of community, warmth and hospitality reflect the same values seen when traveling in Avisora. The main differences lie in the number of people, especially at this given the influx of people traveling for the tournament. Having such a small population at home, the Avisorans are not accustomed to seeing as many people walking on the streets, sitting in the restaurants and bars or cheering in the stadiums. Team captain Andrés Pacheco had this to say about what the experience of the couple hundreds of Avisorans who made the trip with the team might look like: "Of course we're missing home, but I think everyone is just excited to be here! We haven't had much time to go enjoy the famous Hapilopper nightlife," he laughed "but we're enjoying our stay, the food, the weather, the lake, it's all very nice and it somehow feels like home."

Perhaps a handful of them might decide to stay behind a couple more days even after Avisora is eliminated, because right now the focus is on giving a competitive performance in the Baptism of Fire. We've been made aware that the players are not allowed to be on the streets at night, being limited to the hotel lounges and bars, but no alcohol is allowed. Having been scheduled to play all 3 group stage matches in Lake Sprague, the team only travel from the hotel to the loaned training grounds, Warner Hall Park on gamedays, and back. From what we could tell, none of the players are visibly upset with this agreement, with a couple of them even liking it due to feeling "overwhelmed with the amount of people everywhere".

Following that small status report on the Avisoran squad, here's the rundown of the Avisoran win over Chrizenia:

The Avisoran national team defeated the Chrizenia squad 6-2 in the second matchday of the 84th Baptism of Fire, securing the first win for the Penguins in international play! The Penguins showed magnificent creativity in offense, with a pair of late goals giving Chrizenia a more respectable scoreline. Manager Pedro Valencia spoke in the mixed zone prior to the game: "We showed the world what we can do, but now we must show the world that we can win. If we play a full 90 minutes how we played the first 15 minutes of the second half last time, I'm sure we can beat anyone."

The confidence shown by Valencia was surely transmitted to the players, who dominated from start to finish! Eduardo Pérez was fantastic today in the #10 spot, playing behind Julio Sandoval. However, it was Andrés Pacheco who scored the first goal, getting to a great through pass from Pérez and dribbling past two defenders more before hitting an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.

Pérez himself got on the scoresheet after Sandoval headed back a long corner from Benito Colón. Pérez made no mistakes on the volley, showing his quality on the ball. Pérez and Pacheco linked up once again, with Pérez playing another through ball, but this time Pacheco only had to chip it over the rushing Chrizenian goalkeeper. As easy as that, Avisora were 3-0 by the half hour.

Sandoval got his first of the game after Diego Sanabria chipped in a cross from right, for the Costa striker to hit it home! It was an easier victory than anyone expected, as the Avisoran team went to the break up by 4! Perhaps Valencia told the team to slow it down for the second half, considering there's still an important game against Panay Islands on the horizon.

The second half was playground stuff from Avisora once again, with the Penguins connecting almost all of their passes and only giving up possession on missed shots and a couple misplaced passes and crosses. In the 57th minute, Pérez found some space on the edge of the penalty box and managed to pass it back to Sandoval who poked the ball near the right post for the Avisoran's 5th goal.

Pacheco was the creator of the last goal, hitting a fantastic corner kick which Gabriel Delgado easily headed in for the 6th. With half hour to go, Valencia started moving his pieces with the goal of resting the key players for the next game. Tiredness also started to creep in for the Avisoran defenders, who were being a bit more careless, ultimately resulting in two late goals for Chrizenia.

Final score: 6-2
Goalscorers: Andrés Pacheco (2), Eduardo Pérez, Julio Sandoval (2), Gabriel Delgado

Valencia spoke to us once again in the mixed zone after the game: "This is probably the most dominating game I have seen in my career, we needed this to gain momentum for the deciding third game. It would be a dream to go deep in this tournament, but we can only go one game at a time and wishing we can replicate today's performance."

Top Avisoran scorers in the 84th Baptism of Fire:
1. Andrés Pacheco, Julio Sandoval - 3
2. Eduardo Pérez, Gabriel Delgado - 1

Avisora will face Panay Islands and Guimaras in the last matchday, stay tuned!

A dramatic finish sees a 4-4 tie between Avisora, Panay Islands and Guimaras in the final group stage game

19/7/24 - Lake Sprague, Hapilopper

The Penguins and the Isleños were the protagonists of what was probably the best match in the final group stage day for the 84th Baptism of Fire. The 4-4 draw "benefited" the Panayenses who clinched a spot in the next round, thanks to a +3 goal difference (Avisora had a +2). Prior to the match, Avisoran manager Pedro Valencia had this to say: "We're optimistic, even if by some reason we don't end up in second place, I'm certain we can end up as one of the best third-placed teams and move on."

Early in the game things seemed to look up for Avisora when Misael Chiang fouled Eduardo Pérez in the box. Andrés Pacheco put the Avisoran squad 1-0 ahead with the penalty he hit near the right post!

In the 10th minute, Manolito Rodriguez hit a screamer from outside the box, out of reach for goalkeeper Bocachica, making the game a 1-1 affair early on. The Penguins and Eduardo Pérez reached the Carabaos' area once again but Miguel Aldovino's amazing reflexes prevented the second.

It was the 33rd minute when Javi Ricalde scored his first of the game for the Panayenses. But the damage didn't top there, with Miguelito cutting a poor backpass from Edgardo Vega and pushing the ball to the back of the net. Avisora would go 3-1 down to the half-time.

With elimination looming, the few Avisorans who traveled to Hapilopper cheered the team on proudly, they had already given them plenty of goals and even a win to celebrate! In the locker room, the players and Pedro Valencia were not ready to give up just yet.

Julio Sandoval scored the second Penguin goal, heading in a great cross from Benito Colón's left foot. Our boys had shortened the distance, just 2-3 now. After this goal, the Avisorans were finding a lot of space in between the Panayense back 3. Chiang had trouble marking Pérez all game, leading to another penalty being called and Chiang receiving a yellow for a shirt pull. Pacheco put the ball in the net once again, this time hitting it towards the left post. The Penguins had equalized!

The game reached its climax in the 81st minute, when Sanabria hit a perfect through ball which was hit without even thinking by Sandoval. The ball scraped past the far post for the Avisoran 4th goal! Sandoval ran for the corner, taking off his shirt and kissing the Avisoran flag on the front of it, surely this had to be it!

The Carabaos didn't give up and in the game's dying minutes Javi Ricalde scored his second to silence the Avisoran fans. Gabriel Delgado had lost his man when José Luis del Castro hit a late cross into the Avisoran area, with Ricalde showing why he's one of the Panayenses favorite players, volleying the ball past Bocachica.

The tie meant Panay Islands and Guimaras are automatically into the round of 16, with a goal difference of +3 to Avisora's +2. The late goals in the game against Chrizenia sting even more now for the Penguins as they await the results of the Tumbran groups to know if they will continue their participation in the Baptism of Fire.

Final score: 4-4
Goalscorers: Pacheco (2), Sandoval (2)

Here's what the Avisoran manager had to say after the game: "Of course this tie tastes like a defeat for us, we lost our concentration in the last minutes once again and it cost us the automatic qualification. We must learn from these mistakes if we want to qualify for the World Cup." his serious face then cracked a smile, "Anyway, we're all proud of our boys, we've done our best and poured blood, sweat and tears into making everyone back home proud!"

Top Avisoran scorers in the 84th Baptism of Fire:
1. Andrés Pacheco, Julio Sandoval - 5
2. Eduardo Pérez, Gabriel Delgado - 1

Avisora awaits for the rest of the group stage results that will decide qualification into the round of 16. Stay tuned!

PANAYENSES QUALIFIED, AVISORANS TERRIFIED
Lake Sprague, Hapilopper

The fans came to the stadium with a larger capacity, everyone was beating their drums, and playing the trumpets. The first half begins with Misael Chiang fouled the Avisoran Eduardo Pérez that gave the Avisorans a penalty, which was scored by Andrés Pacheco. But the Panayenses have responded with Javi Ricalde's goal past the Avisoran goalkeeper, ended it with a little dance and Miguelito intercepts a bad pass from the Avisoran Edgardo Vega and scored a goal and assisting Del Castro with his first international goal, ended the first half with a 3-1 score. But the Avisorans didn't give up in the second half with a screamer from Julio Sandoval from Benito Colón's left foot pass. Things are looking well for the Avisorans, but here comes Chiang with a shirt pull against Pérez and was given a yellow card. And Pacheco equalizes the score with a penalty kick against Aldovino, making it 3-3. The intense part will be in the 81st minute as Sandoval hits a long shot against Aldovino and scored 4-3 for the Avisorans. The Avisoran fans are screaming loudly for the goal until it was Ricalde who will shut the Avisoran mouths with an equalizer of his in the dying minutes that gave the Panayenses going to the Round of 16, making him again as the hero. And the game ended with a draw but the Panayenses are now being happy so much that they run onto the field and celebrate with the players, Pierini had a sigh of relief to make them into the Round of 16. "It was so close that our countrymen can't believe what we are seeing!", says Ricalde. "Abd hoping that we're going to win the Baptism of Fire." "It was a relief that we tied the game to victory.", says Pierini. "Hoping any team who qualified for the Round of 16 would have given us a fight but we're hoping to advance and win the BoF with dedicated, discipline and talent." The Panayenses have making it to the Round of 16 and hoping that they would win this tournament before the World Cup 97 comes.

Sylverio continues to impress

International Duty

Our electrifying winger Sylverio van Coevorden drops another noteworthy performance helping Kanzlia fight a 3-2 victory over the Martian Independent Republic. Greg Hilson and Maarten Berger provided useful appearances as substitutes.

Sylverio van Coevorden who has been a standout performer for 1899 Szbedansk this season, was instrumental in Kanzlia's 3-2 victory over the Martian Independent Republic (MIR). The 22 year old winger scored the equaliser and provided a crucial assist not long after.

Club manager Hendrik Vos expressed his delight at Sylverio's performance: "We're incredibly proud of Sylverio. His contributions at the international level reflect the hard work and development we've seen from him here at 1899 Szbedansk."

Meanwhile fellow 1899 Szbedansk players Greg Hilson and Maarten Berger also made their mark in the match, coming on as substitutes. Both players put in respectable performances helping to solidify Kanzlia's midfield and backline and see out the victory.

Bouma deserves to stay says pundit Avdrey Kristen

STORY OF THE DAY – SPORTS

HESHAM, TUMBRA – In the aftermath of Kanzlia's thrilling encounter against the Martian Independent Republic which resulted in a 3-2 victory for The Exiles, Centraalsports pundits Johan Letos and Avdrey Kristen shared their insights on the team's performance tonight.

Avdrey Kristen ex-technical director of 1899 Szbedansk praised Vassilis van Coevorden's decision to replace Sharp with Bouma. "Maurice Bouma for all the controversy he has been getting these recent weeks, really showed something special on the pitch today," Kristen remarked. "Bouma holds the ball better and I think his link up with Evert van Selm is really good."

Johan Letos shared the same opinion with Bouma. "I agree Kristen, Bouma's passing is really good throughout the game. I think he had nearly 90% passing accuracy and nearly three quarters of that are forward passes."

Kristen also praised Sylverio for another superb performance. "Sylverio, again, fantastic display of football. And finally he made his full 90 minute appearance.

Centraalsports match ratings as analysed by our technical panel.

1. Z. Mido (GK) - 6.7
Saved several shots, good in build up. Slightly clumsy during corners.
2. J. Svilar (LB) - 6.5
Unable to do much and could barely keep up defending faster wingers.
3. Ardentius (CB) - 7.5
Rock solid in the back. Silenced Rohan Jowling for much of the game.
4. C. Bagheria (CB) - 8.0
Solid in the back and provided the winning goal.
5. W. Wouter (RB) - 6.9
Found himself defending at the back more often than he wanted. In that regard Wouter was alright.
6. Evert v. Selm (CDM) - 7.1
Another good performance in the midfield. Link-up with Bouma was excellent.
7. M. Bouma (CM) -7.4
Paired well with Evert, bring the ball forward and got himself to several shots at goal. Initiated the kick off setpiece perfectly.
8. T. Trouw (CM) - 6.5
Struggled to get into the game's tempo. MIR exploited Trouw's weak first touch and he lost a lot of possession.
9. Sylverio (LW) - 8.5 MOTM
Scored and provided an assist. Struggled to get into the tempo of the game in the first 30 minutes but constantly churned in crosses and shots with Jos Svilar failing to get into position quickly.
10. Rayane (ST) - 7.9
Always found himself in the box at the right time and got himself a goal. Should do more in tracking back once the ball is cleared.
11. N. Hesselink (RW) - 6.6
Another appearance without making any significant impact. No clue why Vassilis didn't take him off.

Substitutes:
- Berger (for Svilar, 45') - 6.9
Provided more on the offensive. Defended well too.
- Hilson (for Trouw, 45') - 7.4
More effective on the midfield than Trouw, provided an immediate link up with Hesselink.

Kanzlian players explores Hesham

The Players

HESHAM - As The Exiles enjoys a brief respite in between their BoF 84 matches, Vassilis van Coevorden took his boys (three of them literally) to tour around the beautiful city of Hesham, Tumbra.

The day started with a visit to Hesham's mayor office. Captain Zaouane Mido and manager Vassilis van Coevorden represented the team, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the hospitality the city of Hesham has shown since our arrival. The Mayor in return praised the selection's professionalism and wished us continued success in the tournament. The formal meeting is concluded with a lot of handshakes and flowers exchanged. A photo with the mayor alongside the entire selection can be found in our social media.

Following this official welcome, the entire squad still in their Varia-tailored suits, embarked on an extensive tour of Hesham's bustling port, a key exporting hub for the region's agriculture industry. The selection expressed genuine interest in the loud and large port whilst officials guided them. This is hardly surprising given that Kanzlia also possesses a rich and maritime-centric heritage. Many of our players came from families with strong ties to the shipping and maritime industries.

The tour provided an insight into the intricate logistics of international trade whilst container boxes lift over their heads. The players were fascinated with the technology and the sheer scale of things employed in port, drawing comparisons with similar facilities back home in Kanzlia.

Midfielder Francois Sharp, a distinguished navy Lt. 3rd Class, was notably engaged during the port tour commenting, "The scale of Hesham's port is really fascinating." Port officials seemed overwhelmed with the amount of questions the players have, perhaps they weren't expecting the players with this amount of interest.

The selections travel continued as they briefly went back to their hotel to change out of their suits and into lighter gear. The day concluded with the team outing to Tumbra's majestic seaside, where players and staff spent the entire evening enjoying the natural beauty of the coast. The team spent the rest of the day participating in various recreational activities. The Triple Coevordens hosted a sandcastle competition whom Dieter Maas won in the end. While Brian Kyl and Adriaan Thuins cooked the teams dinner. The day finally came to a close with the team sharing a nice barbeque just before sunset. The team cleaned up the beach before returning to their hotel.

The Martian Independent Republic 2 - 3 Kanzlia
Overton 40'
Sylverio 70'

Killaw 73'
Rayane 74'

Bagheria 86'

Last-minute goal puts Spiders on the brink of elimination

After a 3-2 loss to Kanzlia, the Spiders now need a draw to qualify for the round of 16. Here's a rundown of the match.

First Half
The first half was largely controlled by the Spiders, who successfully kept the tempo slow, kept both nets safe from attacks. Despite the fact that the Spiders were scoreless, this was their goal, as coming into this match Kanzlia was seen as the best team in the group. It took 40 minutes until an opportunity was had, and that opportunity was seized - Bagheria misplaced a pass, and the Spiders scuttled straight to the goal, with Zaouane Mido unable to put up much resistance. After the goal, there was not much left of the half, and the Spiders put the tempo back to the way they liked it. The first half was boring, but the second half was far from that.

Second Half
For the first 20 minutes or so of the second half, the Spiders played like it was a continuation of the first half, with slow tempo. If they could continue this, they would have another 1-0 win, exactly their goal. However, Kanzlia was not going down without a fight. Sylverio van Coelvorden, their star player, hooked a long shot into the net on what seemed to be a routine attack-counterattack cycle in the 70th minute. The Martians quickly retook the lead just a few minutes later, with Miquan curving a nice pass around a Kanzlian defender to put Jornie Killaw in prime position to score, which he did. After that, things went sour for the Spiders, as miscommunication led to a goal straight out of kickoff from Rayane. This gave both teams 15 minutes to score the winning goal, and Bagheria seized the opportunity in the 86th minute to win the game for the Exiles.

What's Next
A game against Vaishnavaria which we must win, due to the seeding system - normally a draw would be fine, but getting out of the group stage would give us a seeding around 12th, much worse than the top-8 seeding (possibly higher, depending on how much we would win by and how other games go) taken from a win. A loss, of course, knocks the Spiders out of the BoF entirely.

Cutoff. This post will be edited twice: once with the scores from Groups A to C, and once with the round of 16 matchups.

All RPs from now on will count for the Round of 16.

In case you missed it:
Hapilopper wrote:Every cutoff will come with an RP prompt to help you think of any ideas to write a roleplay that could help your chances.

Captain’s strike books Katzeburg passage into last 16

A goal in the final moments from Katzeburg captain Owen Levitt was enough to secure the side passage to the final 16 of the Baptism of Fire in a tight defensive affair in Hapilopper City.

Katzeburg, who entered the game in third place and needing a win to secure a spot in the next round, started slow in front of the Capital Stadium crowd, unable to break down the rugged Timlandian defence which was yet to concede a goal all tournament.

Manager Becka Haberkorn made only two changes to the side which previously lost 3-2 to Alexandrianonisimo, with Gideon Wilkins dropped in place of Faithe Colbert - who started the first game against Revida - and Lambert Niles benched in place of Jaxxon Johns.

However, neither change seemed to make much of an impact in the opening stages, with the best chance of the first twenty minutes being a rather speculative shot from distance from Timlandian forward Alex Vernon, which was routinely saved by Blue Cats keeper Ry Whinery.

Neither side looked to be giving an edge to the other in this crucial fixture, with any mistake potentially leading to an early exit, but as the game began to drag on in the first half - players began getting restless, and tempers began to flare after a collision between Tilman Cummings and Timlandian George Krumpel left both going for each others throats, only to be forced to calm down by their respective team-mates.

With only a few minutes left in the first half, Katzeburg had their best chance of the game to date - with a very quick break thanks to a long-ball from Owen Levitt giving Meriel Arkwright just enough space on the wings to skip past Lucas Owen. Arkwright would square the ball from the left hand side of the park to meet the feet of Johns, but the Axmund United striker was unable to break his international duck - firing over the bar unprompted despite being mere yards away from the goalmouth.

0-0 at half-time, and the travelling contingent of Katzeburg supporters - down to just over 2,000 following the side’s loss on the second matchday - were content. Four points might just be enough to see them through, but they couldn’t take the risk with final matchday games in Tumbra yet to kick off - the side needed to win to be 100% sure of a spot.

Whatever Haberkorn said at the break must have sparked a fire in the side, with Katzeburg starting the second half brightly - coming ever-so-close to pulling ahead in the 48th minute after a brief 1-2 between Drake Wruck and Serena Plank found Plank with the ball at the edge of the box and with just one player to beat. A lovely bit of skill followed to knock the ball through the legs of Martin Blur, before firing a rocket off at goal.

However, Timlandian keeper Tom Johnson was up for the task, pulling off a stunning reflex save to keep the ball out. But Katzeburg wasn’t done yet - Wruck was on hand for the follow-up, tapping the rebound under the second dive of Johnson to beat the keeper. Many at the other end of Capital Stadium thought that was it, Katzeburg had pulled ahead - but what they weren’t expecting was an incredible last ditch slide from Scott Easton to clear the ball off the line and deny Katzeburg an opener.

Timlandian Federation would have a golden chance of their own to open the scoring five minutes later after Katharine Howland was caught napping on the left hand side, allowing Wyatt Krum to break down the flank and swerve a ball into the oncoming path of Tom Blarny - but Blarny’s shot was denied by a powerful stop from Whinery, deflecting the ball out for a corner and letting Katzeburgians breath a sigh of relief.

But still the deadlock remained - neither side able to break things down, and despite throwing on three subs in Emery Nelson, Niles, and Brigitte Ball in her international debut, Katzeburg was unable to find the breakthrough they desperately needed.

As the clock hit 90, news from Parkland Stadium started filtering through - Alexandrianonisimo had prevailed 3-2 over Revida and secured a spot in the final 16. As things stood, Katzeburg would be stranded on four points, and with only just a positive goal difference, the side was facing the precipice of a group stage exit.

But a late corner was left waiting for the Blue Cats, with Haberkorn encouraging everyone but Whinery to push up and crowd the box - the side was going all or nothing in the final moments. Vera Horsfall stood over the ball at the flag, taking her time to line up the ball and consider her next steps. Finally, she fired in a curling effort towards the back post - meeting the head of young Penntop forward Ball. Ball was able to nod it on towards goal, only to be met by the hands of Johnson in goal - pushing the ball sky high and away from the net.

Silence fell on the stadium as the ball sailed high. Both sets of players looked up into the cosmos to follow the ball and its location before it started its descent. Jostling all over the box took place as both teams pushed to get to the loose ball first. But the winner was Levitt - making the most of an almighty leap to just beat Easton to the ball and nod the ball back goalwards. This time, Johnson’s heroics wasn’t enough to stop it - the keeper left out of place from the previous save. Finding the back of the net, silence was quickly washed away by chaos.

“OH MY WORD, KATZEBURG HAVE DONE IT! WITH ONLY SECONDS LEFT ON THE CLOCK, CAPTAIN OWEN LEVITT HAS LIKELY JUST GUIDED THE BLUE CATS INTO THE KNOCKOUTS,” shouted KBC commentator Ben Workington high up in the Capital Stadium rafters, as thousands of fans within the stadium and back home in Katzeburg celebrated as if they had just won the World Cup.

A historic win for the Blue Cats, and one which won’t be forgotten any time soon - but the side now has the perils of knockout football to face.

‘Think of home and all those watching’ - Haberkorn’s patriotic speech helps turn the tide

In her post-match interview, manager Becka Haberkorn said she was “relieved, to say the absolute least” at the side’s victory and passage into the final 16.

“It’s been a tough group stage, and we’ve really learnt a lot of lessons which will serve us well not only for the rest of our stay here, but also going up against some of the world’s best in the World Cup Qualifiers,” she said.

“I don’t think we can go into every game confident we are going to win every single time like some other nations we are facing - we’ve still got a lot of gaps in our game that will take time to sort out and get better at. It needs to be small incremental progress, and what we’ve achieved here tonight is a great milestone in that journey.

“At the break, I just told the team to think of why we are here - all we are representing both as footballers, but as Katzeburgians. I just told them to think of home and all those watching - they’d want us to go out there with some fire, some passion, and we need to show that on the park. I think we did that well in the second half.

“Now if I can only get our team scoring beyond the final 20 minutes of games, that would be a great step in the right direction as well!”

A sigh of relief - now the nation turns to Langenia

Analysis from Rick Tennant from KBC’s Goal!

Well, that was certainly something, wasn’t it? A historic evening and another which will take us a bit longer to get the heart rate back down. Again Katzeburg struggled in the opening half, the side really unable to start brightly so far this tournament - and they were lucky that against a more defensive side like Timlandian Federation, they went unpunished for the sloth-like opening half.

In what is becoming an all-too common sight, Katzeburg again left it late to get anything from the game - requiring a deep in stoppage time strike to secure their spot in the knockouts. You can almost feel the side has skated by almost through pure luck so far, which means the side will be up against it when they finally leave the confines of Capital Stadium and Hapilopper City to travel over to North Hampton to play Group C runners-up Langenia.

The side grabbed a 3-2 win over Cattstan to book their passage to the final 16 and looks to have had a similar journey to the Blue Cats so far - win in the opening game, drop hopes with a second day loss, and sneak through on the final matchday.

Both sides look very even on paper and it could be one which is finely balanced for the full 90 - but with some fast paced dribbling and lots of tricks in their bag, this could be a rather tricky game for Katzeburg. Captain Oscar Galindo has been dedicated to his cause so far this tournament and looks to be a tough player to break down, and with it all to play for going forward, Katzeburg need to be switched on from the start to get anything out of their run.

Plans for North Katzeburg rail network to go before parliamentary vote

By Coby Franklin

After five years of planning, the proposal for a cohesive railway service across all of North Katzeburg will be presented to parliament for a final vote this coming Tuesday.

The submission from North Katzeburg Railways will see the construction of five lines go ahead and the potential to transport more than two million people within the first year of operation, according to initial figures.

Lines will connect capital city Katzestadt with major northern cities Inverhaven and Axmund, while travellers will be able to get from Axmund to Littleport on a single train should the proposal go ahead.

Image
Image - North Katzeburg Railways submission for a cohesive rail service across the north of the nation.

Giv Monet, CEO of North Katzeburg Railways, said the proposal will be ‘transformative’ for the region ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

“At the moment, those wanting to travel across the north have very few options, basically relying on our less than stellar bus services or requiring a car to drive themselves there,” he said.

“You only have to look at the performances of the football teams outside the big cities that play in our recently started national league - the travelling is too much for many, especially from smaller towns like Avonsend, Blubeck, and Shorham.

“A connected rail service will not only be better for the environment, but will reduce fatigue, boost the economy, and make our region a better place to live - to reject this proposal would be akin to forgoing the north entirely.”

Early indications suggest the vote will be tight, with the Social Harmony and Liberal Alliance parties due to vote in support of the proposal, while the right-wing Katzeburg National Party are calling on other independents outside of the north to vote down the bill with it - citing the 3 billion barin cost of construction as ‘ludicrous’.

“Why don’t we just bend over to the north entirely in that case?” one KNP MP texted me ahead of the vote.

“This is a disgusting amount of money being spent on something so trivial like a railway system, just to help stimulate the economy - if we had a full majority let me tell you, this would have never made it as far as it had.”

Here in Axmund, locals seem to be generally in support of the proposed service, with cheaper transport costs and easier access major selling points.

“This is a brilliant idea on all fronts,” said Annie Boben, primary school teacher. “It’s always such a hassle to visit the capital from here and anything we can do to make that burden easier will have great effects, not just for us adults, but the children too.”

“Surely there must be some other way we can make transport easier,” said logging camp manager Rodney Blake. “What I really don’t like about it is that those nerds over in Inverhaven at the Ironworks factory will see so much extra work coming in - as an Axmund City supporter, that scares me as it will give them a lot more money to play with in the market for next season.”

Either way, Tuesday’s vote looks set to be a historic one which could have wide reaching implications on the region - which way are you leaning?

Avisora into the round of 16
20/7/25 - Lake Sprague, Hapilopper

Following the confirmation of the Tumbran group stage results, the Avisoran team prepares to leave Lake Sprague for the first time this tournament. However, plane they will be on doesn't land in Pikwee, going instead to Kingsbury in Tumbra after Avisora was confirmed as the 13th seeded team moving on to the round of 16! We managed to interview team captain Andrés Pacheco: "We're so excited! It won't be easy but we'll keep on doing what we do to try and extend our stay here."

After a 4-4 draw against Panay Islands and Guimaras, players and fans alike were left waiting for news about the team's future. This morning, a loss from Cattstan and a 2-2 game for Vaishnavaria sealed the Penguin's qualification into the next round as the best 3rd ranked team. The Avisorans showed their heart, scoring as many goals as 2nd seeded Restresas or group opponents Edsmontik, but they also showed a weak defense, allowing the most goals out of any qualified team and only less overall than Chrizenia. Having been originally drawn against 4th seeded Edsmontik, they will instead play 3rd seeded Kanzlia to avoid facing their group stage opponents.

Will the Avisoran team's push be enough to move onto the quarter-finals or will their defense cost them against better opponents? Whatever happens, we're proud of what they've done for our Community back home! Stay tuned!

ENDING THE GROUP STAGE WITH A BANG!
LIVE ON ISN NOW

With the promise of Dav der-Ghavyr that every player would get a chance in the Starting XI, many star starters are on the bench.
Will this affect the performance of Edsmontik in the Chrizenia match? Maybe.
But there's also a chance, as said by der-Ghavyr, for substitutes to discover their talents and possibly join the main lineup like Rehcikt and B. Reichstuer did last match.
They're back at the Unification stadium, and these 22 players are ready to send Chrizenia even farther down the bottomless pit of losses.
Seu der-Iksen and Emerik Voidestaft wull be commentating this match.

BAPTISM OF FIRE 84 - MATCHDAY 3
UNIFICATION STADIUM, HALSTED
CHRIZENIA VS EDSMONTIK
10:00PM/22:00 - 7/20/24

PRE GAME
"Oe, Oe, Oe Vdesmon!"
With over 70% of the stadium being crammed with Edsmon fans, there is really only one song you can hear.
Drums and horns blast from the crowd, as they wave their usual "CAN I HAVE YOUR SHIRT, STUERO?" or "GO EDSMONTIK" or "BEST VDESMON" signs.
Some hold flags, others hold banners.
No one was worried about this game.
Some even joked that Lankiv could score three.
But Lankiv wasn't starting, and that was what worried some fans.
Sabmar Lankiv, the original Edsmon goalkeeper, was sort of underperforming, you could say.
But der-Zyfragken was in tip-top shape.
His team Reichan, currently tops the league.
But with league games paused due to the BOF, people are unsure if his performance is still good.
Meanwhile, the Edsmons get off their bus, get the quick coach chat, and walk off into the entrance.

KICKOFF
"Welcome to Live ISN coverage of the Edsmon-Chrizenia match! I'm your commentator, Seu der-Iksen working with Emerik Voidestaft today!"
A coin toss begins, and Recikt has a quick chat with the referees before getting into kickoff position.
Tonight, Reuhans wears the captain's armband.
"We are seconds away from kickoff here at the Unification Stadium in Halsted. This could mark a complete winning streak in the group for the Edsmons, or a first-time win AND upset for Chrizenia."
Kickoff.
Rehcikt quickly sends it inbound for Utravak, who passes to Syverark.
Following their successful wing play tactic; he passes up to der-Struvos.
Rehcikt is undefended, and soon, der-Struvos takes a cross into the center.
The ball soars, and...

FIRST-HALF
*TWEEEET!*
The flag is raised, offside.
Rehcikt argues with the referee, saying he wasn't offside, but the ref doesn't argue.
A quick check with VAR, and Rehcikt is offside by an arm.
der-Struvos makes an argument with the referee, asking why an arm counts for offside.
"It's not like he is 100% offside. It makes no sense?"
Play eventually resumes, with the Chrizenian goalkeeper taking the freekick.
The shot flies out over to their striker, who rams harshly into Wejikaj.
*TWEEET!*
It's a foul, and so, a freekick for Edsmontik.
Utravak takes the kick to der-Struvos, who passes it back to Ystermakt.
From there, he powers it as hard as he can into the corner.
However, it goes way too high, soaring into the fans.
"Edsmontik have just wasted a good bit of possession right there." der-Iksen comments.
The Chrizenian goalie takes the kick, which is picked up by the Chrizenian striker.
The player then takes it forward, pushing against Utravak and passing to the winger.
From the spot, the winger shoots, which der-Zyfragken catches mid-air.
HE rolls it out to der-Haans, who accidentally gives it up.
"Chrizenia are on the attack... what a mistake by der-Haans..."
The striker shoots, but der-Zyfragken punches it out.
The Edsmon fans start chanting: "Aibersk bikt der-Zyfragken!" (Saved by der-Zyfragken!)
M. Reichsteur grabs it, and passes up to Reuhans, who sends it over to Syverark.
From there, it's a long ball to Rehcikt, and a wonderful volley...
"GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!! REHCIKT! MINUTE 13! TO OPEN THE GAME!"
Commentators scream, fans scream, and Rehcikt slides his way to the corner.
"Schutzenmakangaart Rehcikt!" (Scoring machine Rehcikt!)
The game starts back up, and there are a few passes before a Chrizenian midfielder passes right into the feet of der-Struvos.
A quick run up sees another scoring oppertunity.
But just as der-Struvos crosses, a Chrizenian fullback comes sliding into him.
The Edsmon bench comes angrily running, yelling at the ref and helping out der-Struvos.
There is a lot of commotion, as Javarqa rams into the defender and asks him if he liked it, Reuhans argues with the ref explaining that it's a red card, and the doctors take der-Struvos off the pitch.
It's only the 20th minute, and a red card is awarded to the Chrizenian Left-Back.
When everything gets back into order, Stuero comes in to replace the injured der-Struvos.
Utravak lines up for the kick and sends it into the center.
"It's Maartin Stuerooooooooooooooooooo!!!!"
But the header hits the post and is cleared before Stuero gets to it.
Not too long later, Chrizenia is on the attack again, rushing past der-Haans and shooting on der-Zyfragken.
The shot soars into the corner, but Recha der-Zyfragken just barely manages to punt it away.
The ball gets to M. Reichsteur, who clears it up to Utravak.
"It's Utravak- OH WHAT A GOAL!!!!!"
From long range out, Utravak lands a powershot into the top corner.
The crowd screams, and Utravak celebrates, cheering with his teammates and the fans.
The ball heads back to Chrizenia, and they quickly try a defensive position.
The Chrizenian striker sends the ball to the center-back, who punts it up to the wingers.
The left-winger runs it up, trying to get around Jervanois.
"He's dribbling... Can Chrizenia find a chance?"
M. Reichsteur rushes forwards just as the winger shoots, deflecting the shot.
But it goes straight to the striker, whot akes a shot...
"AND IT'S SAVED BY DER-ZYFRAGKEN! WHAT A SAVE!"
With the tip of his fingers, he barely pushed the ball up into the crossbar.
A few minutes passed by, with nothing really happening.
Until the 40th minute, Rehcikt grabs the ball and crosses it...
"IT'S MAARTIN STUERO!!!!!!"
The header flies right across the Chrizenian goalkeeper, adding to Edsmontik's lead.
Edsmon fans chant "Oe Vdesmon" over and over, waiting for halftime to come.
And soon, it does.

HALFTIME
"Great job team, we've taken a 3-0 lead in the first half, and I'm sure we can increase that for the second.
Javarqa, you're coming on for der-Haans, and Fotserr, you're in for Rehcikt.
Good luck! Now get out there and play!"

SECOND HALF
After Chrizenia starts the second half up, time goes by pretty quickly.
Chrizenia's substitute striker maages to pass M. Reichsteur, and shoot, but the shot was cleared off the line by Javarqa.
From the clearance, Syverark receives the ball, and begins the usual wing play tactic.
He passes up to Stuero, who crosses over after avoiding a defender.
There's a chance for Fotserr, but the goalkeeper manages to catch the ball.
"There has been one attack for each team this half, what will happen next, we don't know." states commentator der-Iksen.
Just seconds later, Chrizenia see another chance, but a tackle by Jervanois ends the campaign.
"Reuhans has it, and he is passing over to Wejikaj, looks like Kyv Wejikaj is running with the ball towards the center" der-Iksen says again.
The fans continue chanting, blasting horns and banging drums.
With 40 minutes remaining, Chrizenia lob the ball upwards.
The winger receives, and then crosses into the center, where a shot from the striker could make a difference-
"A GOALLLLLLLLLL!!! CHRIZENIA MIGHT JUST STILL BE IN THE GAME HERE!"
However, seconds later, the goal is determined as offside, since a Chrizenian midfielder who ran up blocked up the space for der-Zyfragken to dive.
There are some team arguments from Chrizenia, before 3 substitutions are made.
The game continues on, with der-Zyfragken kicking the ball out to the half-line.
Utravak grabs the ball and dribbles a bit before passing to Reuhans.
Reuhans then sends it over to Syverark, who crosses over to Wejikaj.
Wejikaj loses the ball, and tries to tackle it back, but fouls the Chrizenian midfielder.
A yellow card is given to Wejikaj, and play resumes with a freekick for Chrizenia.
The Chrizenians quickly try to create another attack.
Two passes later, and the Chrizenian winger is in the Edsmon danger zone.
But a rush from der-Zyfragken causes him to panic, leading to him giving up the ball.
As the 60th minute approaches, Edsmontik go in for another.
der-Zyfragken punts it to Wejikaj, but then he is fouled by the midfielder that he fouled before.
*TWEEET!*
The midfielder gets a yellow, which is followed by Wejikaj and B. Reichsteur coming off for Aespana and Kizani.
A chance for Edsmontik here.
Aespana sends the kick, and the ball flies towards the penalty box.
Utravak takes a header, but the goalkeeper punches it.
But Stuero comes in, and...
"HE SMASHES IT IN! IT'S A MATCH GETTING OUT OF HAND! 4-0 NOW!"
Stuero runs and slides, pointing to the fans and shaking hands with Aespana.
64', 4-0 Edsmontik.
Chrizenia starts back up, with their expressions showing that they knew they'd exit without a win.
They make soem strong passes, and pass through Jevanois, attempting another shot.
This time, Javarqa wins the header, and clears it away.
For the next few minutes, there's passing, passing, and more passing.
Edsmon fan cheer, while Chrizenian fans do their best to encourage their team to go on.
After what feels like forever to some people, the match hits the 70th minute mark.
Only 20 minutes left.
Edsmontik weren't about to end it there though, as Ystermakt is substituted on.
He would soon provide Stuero with the ball.
"It's Stuero with the ball now, a pass from the freshly substituted on Ystermakt. He's advancing now, past that center back and- OHHHHH! IT'S ANOTHER GOAL! I WOULDN'T BLAME HIM, HE WANTS TO SEAL THAT HATTRICK, AND NOW HE HAS!"
The ball soared right of the goalkeeper, and unfortunately for him, he was unable to stop it.
Edsmontik now hold a 5-0 lead in the 71st minute.
The rest of time passes quickly as it started, with Chrizenia gathering a few chances between 73' and 78'.
But their best chance comes when Kizani fouls the right winger in the box...
"AND IT'S A PENALTY! THE REFEREE HAS SPOKEN, CHRIZENIA GET ONE CHANCE TO SCORE!"
The striker breathed in, and fired the shot.
der-Zyfragken dived, but the wrong way.
And getting back to the side the ball went in milliseconds was impossible.
"AND A GOAL! BUT AT THIS STAGE, IT'S A MERE CONCELLATION, BECAUSE NOW, THEY CAN'T ESCAPE THIS LOSS"
The Chrizenians celebrated, even knowing they'd lose no matter what.
der-Zyfragken shared a handshake with the striker, before heading back to the goal.
10 minutes remained, and it was the Edsmon job to hold everything together.
And so they did, just 10 minutes plus 3 of stoppage later, the final whistle blew.
*TWEEET, TWEEET, TWEEEEEEEEEEEEET*
The bench came running, the manager high fived the players, and Lankiv and der-Zyfragken celebrated.
Edsmontik had topped their BOF group, what a debut.

The @EdsmonFustball, the official account of the national team, posted a tweet with a link to a voting site for best Edsmon player.
Many predictions were there for the first day, as many say der-Zyfragken's recen performance at the Chrizenia match will make him popular with fans.
Others say Stuero will top easily, as he scored a hattrick and posed for a photo holding his hattrick ball.
But as of now, @EdsmonFustball has released a post with the current day 1 votes.
Here it is:

The Kronbia national team qualified after its second victory in the last match, which made the team enter the final match with some recklessness, so in the 27th minute the Imporia national team scored a goal due to a mistake from the defence. After that, the team started to become active and the rest of the second half changed. The performance of the players changed after harsh words from coach Atilio Lamberto between the two halves. The team began with a more organized and offensive performance that resulted in the equalizing goal scored by Ovidio Florencio in the 62nd minute, where Ovidio Florencio received a high cross from Ismael Gabriel to score a goal from a header. After that, all of Kronbia’s attempts to score the victory failed until the end of the match which resulted in a 1-1 draw. He gave them a lesson not to underestimate any match, and the team began preparing for the round of 16 match, where it will face the Panay Islands and Guimaras national team.

Profile

Atilio Lamberto, the coach of the Montana Verde Tornados team, is 48 years old. He is one of the stars of the first generation of football players in Kronbia. He began playing in 1998 when the league was established and was one of the Forwards of the El Leons team, one of the teams that disbanded. He won the league twice before retiring. In 2007, he trained several teams, including high school teams and a team affiliated with Macuebona University, before leading the Tornados team. As a coach, he won the league three times, which made him a qualified coach to lead the team in its first international tournament as an ambitious coach with a high tactical mind. On a personal level, he owns a Cars workshop in the Montana Verde, and there are some rumors that say that in his youth he was part of the "Don Jose" Cartel in the Montana Verde, but he always denies this.

Kanzlia secures top spot with comfortable win over New Jarwel, Sylverio hattrick of assists
Image

STORY OF THE DAY – SPORTS

HESHAM, TUMBRA – Kanzlia concluded their group stage campaign in the Baptism of Fire 84 tournament with a convincing 3-1 victory over New Jarwel, securing top spot and three wins of three. This is still achieved despite Vassilis van Coevorden fielding a weaker team.

The match kicked off with Kanzlia fielding a mix of regular starters and rotation players. Angelo Wolf for one, replaces Rayane Konadoe. Wolf opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a clinical finish past New Jarwel defenders, courtesy a pass from Sylverio van Coevorden. New Jarwel would respond almost immediately when their striker capitalised on a mistake by young goalkeeper Camaro Mulders, who replaced Z. Mido.

Vassilis made strategic substitutions in the second half, taking off Nick Hesselink and Adriaan Thuins whilst introducing Reiner van Coevorden and Brian Kyl in the 65th minute. Reiner van Coevorden in Reiner-fashion restored Kanzlia's lead in the 70th minute, once again courtesy of a pass from Sylverio van Coevorden. Kanzlia would step up their game and really put the pressure on New Jarwel who were on the brink of elimination.

A final substitution saw Rian Rovcanin replace M. Bouma in the 75th minute adding more energy to the midfield. As the game approaches a close, Rovcanin found himself unmarked when Sylverio deliver a cross to the box. Rovcanin finished it home in the 2nd minute of stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt.

Sylverio's hattrick of assists earned him a well-deserved Man of the Match award.

GOALSCORERS:
A. Wolf 30' (KNZ)
44' (New Jarwel)
R. van Coevorden 70' (KNZ)
R. Rovcanin 90+2' (KNZ)

Kanzlia to face Avisora in the Round of 16
STORY OF THE DAY – SPORTS

HESHAM, TUMBRA – Kanzlia will face Avisora in the Baptism of Fire Round of 16.

The draw had just been made and BoF officials have announced that Kanzlia's next opponents will be Avisora. Avisora who finished third in their group is still an opponent not to underestimate, considering they scored 12 goals in the group stages. That is the joint-highest goal scored in the entire group stages.

Avisora, a small nation population-wise with almost half of all Avisorans located in the Pikwee Metro, is a country renowned for its stunning environment and culture. The 25,000 Avisorans who call the 50,000 square kilometer square country their home live in harmony and peace. Their culture is stunning with its citizens embracing native myth and tradition whilst progressing into the modern age and beyond. In sports, it is astonishing that the Avisoran selection played entertaining football throughout the group stage.

The 23-man Avisoran selection is a talented group, with perhaps special attention to Andres Pacheco who is The Penguins top scorer with 5 goals. Whilst the Avisoran selection lacks experience, that is hardly noteworthy considering BoF is the tournament for the experience-starved. After a respectful loss to an electrifying Edsmontik side, the Avisorans cruised to a smashing 6-2 victory over Chrizenia. With players like Eduardo Perez and Julio Sandoval shining. Their last game would come against Panay Islands and Guimaraes and resulted in what was perhaps the best game of the entire tournament so far. An exciting 4-4 draw placed Avisora third in their group. With Pacheco and Sandoval in center stage for the Penguins. It wasn't the ideal group stage performance for Avisora, but they have shown their resilience and tactical brilliance under manager Pedro Valencia.

Kanzlia would want to exploit Avisora's tendency to concede late in the game. With the game against Edsmontik and Chrizenia provided examples of where Avisora's defence grew tired. In both games, Avisora conceded two goals relatively late into the match. And with the game against The Carabaos, the Avisoran defence conceded a late goal to Javi Ricalde. Overall, it seems as if Avisora is having trouble defending as they conceded 10 goals in three games, which is the 2nd highest in the entire tournament (just behind worst performing Chrizenia). Kanzlia's Sylverio van Coevorden will have to do his best tiring the Avisoran defenders and causing as much mayhem as he could. Therefor, it seems like Avisora might resort to a 5-3-2 formation to counter this. In that regard, Kanzlia's midfield should pose no problem dominating the center field and hopefully put the game into a deadlock. However Kanzlia will make things easier for them if the threat of Sandoval and Pachecho is neutralised, and to do so it might be best to also contain the Penguins number 10, Eduardo Perez who acts as the engine of the Avisoran side.

The Martian Independent Republic 2 - 2
Vaishnavaria

Williams 38'
Grant 50'
Jain 66'

Jowling 83'

Spiders Make It To R16 Off Late Jowling Goal

Rohan Jowling saved the Spiders yet again with an 86th minute goal to keep the struggling Martian team as 2nd in their group, taking the 12th seed and a match with Alexandrianonisimo after the Vaishnavaria game was over. Here's an overview of the Spiders' final group stage match, and a short preview of their R16 match against Alexandrianonisimo, the team they're flying all the way to Hapilopper to play.

First Half
The first half was quite similar to both the Kanzlia and New Jarwen games in that the Spiders took over, with the pace of the match being slow, just as they liked it. And again, like the Kanzlia and New Jarwen games, the first blood was drawn by the Spiders, as Williams faked out Marcilo and slotted the ball neatly into the net in the 38th minute. Everything was going according to plan, and the Spiders were on track to play a team like Katzeburg or the Godlands - not bad, for certain, but worse than a group-topping team.

Second Half
Then the exhaustion hit. This Martian team has suffered with using all their energy in the first half lately, and this game was no difference. First, Henri Enwye fumbled a simple save, deflecting the ball coming off of the boot of Grant into the goal instead of away from it, tying the match at 1 a piece. Then, to make matters worse, Jain outran the Martian defense and placed the ball in the top right corner, where Enwye wasn't able to reach it. The Spiders were on the brink of elimination from the entire Baptism of Fire - not a good look for them. However, Rohan Jowling had something to say about that, heading in the ball off of a corner from Nils Overton with 7 minutes left in the game to tie the match at 2 all, and when the final whistle blew, the Martian Independent Republic had secured 2nd place in the group and the 12th seed, heading on to face Alexandrianonisimo.

Up Next: (5) Alexandrianonisimo
Alexandrianonisimo is an outlier that doesn't fit the classic rule, "No roster, no skills." They topped their group, including an impressive win over Katzeburg and a 3-2 victory against Revida, without even saying who was scoring those goals. And with no information, the Spiders don't know who to try to counter. All they can do is play their best, and try to make it to the quarterfinals, where they might be headed for a match against Edsmontik, the 4th seed and a team that got 3 wins through 3 games.

Wonder of the World, Power of the People

As the final whistle at David Coney Field at Sharpe's Stadium blew, the few West Vdaran fans that were able to take the long flight to Hapilopper stood and applauded their team off the pitch, as they ran out as 4-0 winners and, more importantly, group stage toppers. Of course, Ivanis and his staff were not at all interested in ‘seedings’ or any of the like, but merely progressing to the next stage would have been seen as acceptable. To do it in such emphatic fashion - ten goals without reply - is something that has immensely pleased the nation’s success-starved population, bringing about a long-needed sense of optimism around the nation’s situation. As it turns out, sporting accolades can really divert public attention away from other, more trivial things, such as food supply issues and [REDACTED] incidents. What fun, what joy!

O Sýntrofos
The Voice of the Vdaran Western Territories

KKV Announces Reform

Following weeks of pressure from party insiders, the Communist Party of Vdara (KKV) have elected to make sweeping changes to West Vdara’s electoral system, replacing the traditional first-past-the-post system with mixed-member constituencies in an attempt to ‘get with the times’.

A spokesperson for the KKV said: ”We believe that these changes will allow for even more representation for the proud people of the Vdaran Western Territories, who - on rare occasions - have made it clear that the Party have not met their expectations. With an increased and more localised member count, the KKV feels that voter satisfaction will increase tenfold.”

Of course, not every reform announced by the party is followed through to the fullest extent, but this is a clear sign that the government are listening to the people it claims to represent.

Workers, Not Lurkers

The West Vdaran national team manager has hit out at suggestions that the squad were in the Baptism of Fire ‘to make up the numbers’, asserting that his team were here for victory. Such accusations were thrown around by the capitalist East Vdaran publication known as the ‘Irakleio Informer’, which also just so happens to be their #1 source of spare toilet paper. It is therefore no surprise that the Chanian shitrag chose to criticise the nation’s strong performances in the tournament, and the manager made this clear:

”Perhaps they are just jealous that our group stage has gone better than theirs did, eh? They may have their World Cup qualifications and many more years in international football, but our ability to burst onto the scene and immediately outperform their best efforts has evidently irked them. Indeed, they should focus on their own efforts rather than ours - take our mantra, for example. We are workers, not lurkers. Sure, we could perform lethargically and get to an acceptable stage, but where is the fun in that? We work hard, we graft, we stick our elbows out, and ultimately it brings results! If that annoys East Vdarans, so be it.”

Assembly Sends Best Wishes

In a rare moment of unity, the East Vdaran Legislature - after 7 rounds of voting - finally settled on a congratulatory letter to send to the country’s national football team, much to the mockery of the international community. The letter was addressed with the following:

”The Supreme Proleteriat Council has voted to wish your team good luck by 162 votes to 104, with 93 abstentions.”

Jealous international observers have made several derisory jibes about the letter, decrying it as ‘a joke’ and ‘hilariously petty’, but our patriotic representatives disagree. An unnamed Council Member stated: ”I personally abstained as I believe ‘luck’ is a concept which is incompatible with our nation’s values, but I do believe some well wishes are in order. Due to these conflicting ideals, I elected to abstain and went for an afternoon coffee instead of participating in the debate.”

Los Azules Advance to Round of 16

TUMBRA-A 3-2 win over Cattstan cemented Los Azules as the runner-ups in Group C of the Baptism of Fire tournament. After a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Kronbia recently that dropped them to second place, the Langenians rallied to secure a good seed in the Round of 16, finishing ranked 9th. The game set the tone for a Langenian national team heading into the knockout stage of the Baptism of Fire tournament.

Perhaps driven by a desire for redemption after their previous loss to Kronbia, Los Azules started out the game against Cattstan aggressively, attacking the opposing goal repeatedly and attempting to intercept passes to avoid counterattacks. In the 34th minute, their efforts paid off as forward Raul Guzman received a pass from midfielder Rafael Semprun and moved through an open lane in the Cattstan defense, dribbling past the opposing defenders to fire a direct shot at their goal. As a result, the Langenians took a 1-0 lead. However, at the 42nd minute, a Cattstan counterattack resulted in a corner kick that enabled them to head the ball into the Langenian goal, equalizing the game. Both teams returned to their locker rooms tied 1-1.

A notable part of the first half was the surprising amount of improvement within the Langenian defense. The four Los Azules defenders Ivan Elvira, Zacarias Montes, Leonardo Ciceron and Guillermo Fraga repeatedly cleared the ball to the other side of the pitch whenever it came close to the Langenian goal, possibly indicating a switch in the strategies of coach Enrique Vargas. Nonetheless, the traditional Langenian style of attacking football remained on full display, and Los Azules were still forced to concede a goal via that corner kick and header.

As the second half began, the Langenians once again resumed the offensive. Rafael Semprun, the central midfielder, and the wingers Thiago Carballo and Joel Rodriguez repeatedly assisted "The Three G's" attacking trio at the front in aggressively attempting to create goalscoring opportunities. One notable opportunity came when Semprun attempted a long range shot that hit the post of the Cattstan net as the Langenian midfielder stared in surprise. Once again, the numerous attacks yielded results quickly as forward Oscar Galindo, the team captain, received a throw-in from winger Rodriguez to attempt to dribble past the opposing defenders. Outnumbered, he passed the ball to attacking midfielder Daniel Gallegos, who in turn passed it back as Galindo hammered it into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead at the 67th minute.

Not to be outdone, Cattstan quickly took possession of the ball to press the Langenians and force them to defend, ultimately breaking through the defense to score at a close range from Langenian goalkeeper Eduardo Arnal in the 75th minute to tie the game 2-2. However, it appeared Los Azules were galvanized enough by this event to push for the win, quickly seizing back control of the ball to renew their attacks on the Cattstan goal. Over and over again, the Langenian offense attempted to break through and create passing lanes, seemingly trying to control the pace of the game to avoid counterattacks.

Finally, in the 84th minute Daniel Gallegos took possession of the ball from one of the wings and attempted a bending shot that managed to curve into the opposing net for a game-winning goal, allowing for a Langenian 3-2 lead. The attacking midfielder danced around with several teammates in a goal celebration in front of the thousands of blue Los Azules supporters. Managing to hold on to their lead past the 90th minute and the few minutes of stoppage time, the Langenians finished their last group stage match with a victory. Many of the Los Azules players ran around the pitch in delight as the final whistle blew having secured their ticket to a good seed in the knockout stage.

Langenia finishes the group stage of the Baptism of Fire with a record of 2 wins and 1 defeat, placing them as the runners-up in Group C and with the 9th seed in the upcoming Round of 16. They are scheduled to face Katzeburg, who holds the 8th seed, in their Round of 16 match in the host nation of Hapiloper. Despite the success over Cattstan, manager Enrique Vargas made it very clear in the postgame press conference that challenges remain ahead to advance further in the Baptism of Fire tournament.

"Playing Katzeburg will be a tough game as they are very strong competitors. They currently have the same record of wins and losses as we do coming out of their group stage, having scored exactly the same number of goals as we have so far throughout the tournament, and conceded only one less. Their style of play is an attacking-focused one very similar to ours."

Many analysts agree with Vargas's statement, expecting a match that will feature numerous goalscoring opportunities and attacks from both sides. Thousands of Los Azules fans now follow the national team to Hapiloper as they prepare for this pivotal match. The Langenian national team will play Katzeburg at North Hampton Stadium in North Hamptom, Hapiloper tomorrow.

Team captain Oscar Galindo made clear his determination to prevail. "We'll play our very best game tomorrow and try our hardest. We'll either succeed or fail with a fight."

CUTOFF
For Round of 16 matches in Hapilopper - All RPs for these teams after this cutoff will count for the Round of 8.
Tonight in Hapilopper and Tumbra, a thousand million questions will be answered about who moves on and who goes home. 16 teams are looking for a miracle in their life. Cutoff Song: Moody Blues - Question

"When Hapilopper made it to the knockout rounds of Baptism of Fire 70 some 14 cycles ago, the team and their players were presented with 'Playoff Special' kits. For players such as Ernie Stevenson and Pancakes Taggart, it was a sign that they truly had a chance to do something special. Has your team done anything special for the knockouts? And if so, what?"

MAJOR PROGRAMMING NOTE: I have a pre-planned trip this week - and I will be out of town for the Round of 8 and the Semi-Finals. This means that Hapiloppian cutoffs will likely run later than the original 0200-0400 UTC/2200-000 EDT/2100-2300 CDT times.

Lisade 31st, 1012:
Novena Park, Newton

Returning to Newton, rather, staying in Newton, allowed the players to reminisce about their time in these Esportivan hosted tournaments, and how much it felt like Restresas in some ways. Lakewood was also surrounded in forests, just like Maresda is, and Newton reminded the players and the loved ones they took to keep company around them like Port York, with Lane Sanchez's girlfriend, Lydia, even saying that: "Yeah, this is Port York, but with pirates instead of royalty." A high compliment considering that Port York, in the short time that Restresas has interacted with their Esportivan neighbors, is considered to be one of the best looking cities in the region.

Restresas has eyes on the overall #1 seed for their first ever appearance in a knockout stage as they take on Hetaru, a foe that they didn't know much about. Their surprise elite passing was a hassle all game, but especially early on, where they put up 2 easy ones into the net, which left the heavily Restresas crowd infuriated, and Wesley even more so. Pablo Albu responds to his coach's fury with an easy goal of his own 2 minutes later, which brought a lot of hope to the crowd. From there, the crowd's energy and Restresas's defense forced those great passes at the start of the game to be more sloppy and more exploitable, which caused Restresas to take the reins, which was further emphasized with a Lane Sanchez goal in the 22nd minute. The rest of the half was not so dominant, but Restresas held strong on their reins on the pace of the match.

Wesley was fired up in the locker room, which helped motivate the team to further heights. "We have 5 goals to get the 1 seed, we need that more than ever, considering how conflicting our emotions are. Be there, be strong, be cautious, but play with a fire that Hetaru cannot contain."

The second half was an explosion, thanks to Pablo Albu's goal in the 47th minute, which was the dagger, and from there, Hetaru could not keep up, as the fire of Restresas was too much to handle. The reins were firmly in Restresas's hands, with passes being intercepted, and them being outplayed at every level that was in a way that Restresas hasn't done before. Indiana Pablo and Pablo Albu's goals could not get the job done for a 1 seed, so they had to settle for the second seed... which was still a massive achievement. The match itself was a tale of quickly things can go south and north for Resteresas, and how dominant they were throughout the group stages turned it's head in the best way, to help compliment the new tactical all out press tactic that they have been working on throughout the tournament.

After the game, many players were visibly angry, but they kept their calm in the interviews, with Wesley thanking the city of Newton for hosting the games, and that they are ready to be back for another showcase at the stadium. Meanwhile, in Mount Heavens, the emerald city and emerald clothing caught global attention, due to how vibrant and green the crowd was. This was something that captain Indiana Pablo mentioned in the post-match interviews, and that the entire team noticed that and thanked the city of Mount Heavens for bringing the best of Restresas to the global scene, and that he loved being here in Newton with his wife, his newborn daughter, and his 2.5-year-old son.

BoF, Ro16 vs Of the Holy See, Two Days Before Match

Abraham and Acorn were resting at the side of the mat, meanwhile Iris was giving another attempt at the V4 she’d mapped out. “You got it, Iris,” Abraham said lackadaisically. He turned to Acorn. “Man, I gotta go climbing more,” he noted, “my arms are already cooked and we just got here.”

“Yeah,” Acorn replied, “and more back and shoulders wouldn’t hurt.” At that moment, Iris fell from the climb about halfway up. “Oof,” Acorn exclaimed. “Nice try.”

“Agh, I know I got this,” Iris said, “I just…” She reached for the first grips and began climbing again. She began by planting her feet on the small footholds at the bottom of the wall. She moved her left foot over to the protruding block and reached over to the crimp to her left. She then tried the same maneuver that gave her so much difficulty, bringing her right leg over the large sphere to her left and reaching up at the same time with her right arm to the above grip. “Yes,” she exclaimed, nailing the move.

“So anyways Abe,” Acorn began, “whaddaya got on our next opponents.”

“Right,” Abraham began taking out his phone with some notes on the team, Of the Holy See’s Red Monsters. “So the idea is that they’ve been pretty good at capitalizing on their opponents’ mistakes. So, for example in this game against Osterhalten,” he said, opening up a video of the game, “they managed to instantly launch a counterattack when this player,” he pointed to one of the Osterhalten players, “lost possession. They quickly turned that into a goal.” He turned off his tablet and turned to face Acorn. “That’s not the only example-”

“Oh, let’s go Iris!” Acorn interrupted Abraham to watch Iris reach her last obstacle. “Come on, you’re right there,” he exclaimed. Iris got both of her feet on the same tiny foothold, reaching straight up to grip the top. She finally grabbed it, breathing a sigh of relief and coming back down. “Well climbed,” Acorn said in congratulations.

“Yeah,” Abraham said, stretching his arms, “we definitely gotta go out more. Now, let’s try this V3.”

Cut-off for the Tumbra half. All RPs from now on will count for the quarter-finals.

Scores will be edited into this post.

In case you missed it:

Hapilopper wrote:Every cutoff will come with an RP prompt to help you think of any ideas to write a roleplay that could help your chances.

The writing prompts posted on the cutoffs are here to help you figure out what to write about. They are purely optional, and RPs that do not follow the prompts will NOT be penalized in any way. RPs that do follow the prompts will not be graded any differently than those that don't.

A SHOCKING DEFEAT
Tumbra

Before the match begins, the Panayenses have their seats full ti see their national team qualify to the quarterfinals. It started with some defensive prowess of Heo, Aldovino, Chiang, and Ángeles trying to stop the Kronbians from scoring. There are some missed chances from Ricalde, Del Castro, and Nam, who is subbed off by Martinelli, whose goal has been ruled offside. The Panayenses were hoping for a win, until the Kronbians started to show off their skills. A Kronbian defender stopped the captain's possible pass to Miguelito, and in the dying minutes, a Kronbian midfielder gave the free kick to a Kronbian player who gave the first and only goal that made Panayenses shocked for a basketballing country like Kronbia. And it was over for the Carabaos. The Kronbians celebrated with their fans, while the Panayenses didn't believe what was going on for them. "I can't believe that goal!", says Ricalde. "I was shocked that they would qualify to the quarterfinals!" "Well, we do our best.", says Pierini. "And we're hoping for a good run in the 97th World Cup as we did in Baptism of Fire." The Panayenses will have a friendly match after their trailblazing BoF performance.

Player of the Match - Drake Wruck (KAT)

Fiery affair and late dramatics sees Katzeburg march on

A twisting and turning tale of football which was ended with a crucial spot kick from Katzeburg’s Drake Wruck was the sight for a just-under capacity crowd at the North Hampton Stadium in North Hampton.

In front of just over 50,000 fans - including 15,000 Katzeburgians who have made last-minute trips to Hapilopper following the side’s dramatic 1-0 win on the final day of the group stage - Katzeburg ran out a side with just a single change from the team which beat Timlandian, bringing back Lambert Niles into the fold in place of Jaxxon Johns.

Katzeburg had made a habit of starting poorly so far this campaign, and against the Los Azules - who finished second in their group thanks to a last day 3-2 win over Cattstan - sought to reap an early reward from the Blue Cats’ sluggish first 10 minutes, with Daniel Gallegos firing an early shot just the wrong side of the bar from distance in the first effort of the match.

However, this seemed like a different Katzeburg side which had shown up so far this competition - the side was playing quicker, more flexibly, and relied a lot more on the wing play of Serena Plank and Vera Horsfall than in previous games - something manager Becka Haberkorn flagged in her pre-match comments to media, saying “we want to bring something a little different this time around, and hopefully it can provide just enough of a surprise we can make something great out of it.”

And something different did it bring, with Katzeburg taking the lead just 17 minutes in - the first time the team had scored in the opening half all campaign. Again, it was a chance created from the skills of Horsfall - picking up the ball in her own half on the right flank, skipping past Ivan Elvira before firing the ball flat along the ground into the open feet of Drake Wruck in the box - a move many had seen the two perform in the national league at Katzestadt Rovers.

After a disappointing performance in the last two matches, Wruck would not flub his lines this time - firing the ball to the right of a diving Eduardo Arnal to give Katzeburg the lead.

It was an opener which shocked many - the Blue Cats had been languid so far in opening halves, yet here they were a goal ahead and playing some smart attacking football which has made an early impact.

Just over ten minutes later the travelling Los Azules fans were stunned again, as Niles made his mark on the match in his return to the starting XI - nodding a simple corner cross from Plank down into the bottom left corner of the net to put Katzeburg two up within the opening half hour.

Back in Katzestadt, where a live zone had been prepared in the national Katzestadt Arena, celebrations erupted at the second strike - breaking the sound record for noise in the city previously held by the final performance from Katzeburgian rock group Empty Flat a few years earlier.

But Katzeburg didn’t look like slowing down, with just two minutes later another huge chance popping up for Wruck after a quick break caught Langenian defender Zacarias Montes napping. Wruck however, wasn’t able to add to his overall tally - snatching at the ball to send his effort just wide of the post.

With a positive atmosphere going against them, Langenia needed to do something to pull themselves back into the match, and they soon would - with Gallegos getting the better of Katharine Howland on the left hand flank and cutting into the box. Katzeburg captain Owen Levitt would attempt to stifle play with a sliding challenge, only for Gallegos to artfully flick the ball over Levitt’s oncoming legs, pull the ball down, and fire a powerful effort past Ry Whinery in goal to reduce the deficit.

Gallegos would have a fine chance to level the scores just on the stroke of half-time as well, with the forward firing a strong effort from the edge of the box, only to be denied by a great save from Whinery - tipping the ball over the bar.

Katzeburg would enter the half-time break a goal ahead, and with one foot in the final eight - but with an entire second half to go, many Katzeburgian supporters both in the stadium and back home were worried that while they’ve started strong, the collapse would be about to hit like an oncoming train.

Fans were very right to have worried, with Langenia coming out of the gates like a bat out of hell for the second half - with the side incredibly unlucky not to level the scores following a smart 1-2 between Gallegos and Raul Guzman found Guzman in a 1-on-1 with Whinery. But the Katzestadt AFC keeper ran out the winner of the clash, denying the shot and then scrambling to clear the follow-up effort from midfielder Rafael Semprun.

However, Katzeburg looked sluggish, and finally, ten minutes into the second half, they were made to pay for it - with Guzman getting on the scoresheet after knocking the ball through the legs of Whinery following a mad scramble in the box between three Langenian attackers and three Katzeburgian defenders.

With the scores now level, a sense of tension grabbed the crowd - both sides had 35 minutes to play for their campaigns, and this tightrope starting stringing its way onto the field. At first, it was a late nudge here and a late nudge there, but within minutes the game quickly started bubbling over.

Katzeberg midfielder Tilman Cummings was arguably the one who kicked the game into overdrive - literally - after a late tackle on winger Thiago Carballo caused tempers to flare on both sides. Cummings got a yellow for his challenge, but the stage was set for a fiery finish.

However, it was Katzeburg who was able to ride this wave of emotion into something more tangible, with the side winning a crucial free-kick on the edge of the box at the 65 minute mark after Elvira went in late on Wruck. Up to the ball stepped Niles, looking to nab his second of the match, but his curling free-kick was denied by a great save from Arnal. However, Arnal was only able to tip the ball away from the goal, with the loose ball ending up near Plank, who was able to fire a first-touch effort from a tight angle into the back of the net and restore Katzeburg’s lead.

It was a lead which lasted for less than five minutes. Langenia would not lie down and spurred on by going a goal down the side rallied through captain Oscar Galindo, and it would be the Langenian forward who would make the impact - bursting down the right hand side of the park thanks to an excellent through ball from Guillermo Fraga.

Galindo would produce a moment of brilliance, sliding past Levitt, nutmegging Howland, and finally chipping the ball over the head of an onrushing Whinery to net a breathtaking goal and one which put Langenia back on level terms.

With just less than 20 minutes to play, Haberkorn turned to her bench to try and find the difference - Howland came off for Erik Clarkson, while Cummings came off for Heilwig Courtney, making her international debut at a crucial stage of the Blue Cats’ campaign.

With neither side looking like they were going to make the breakthrough, time continued ticking away, with tackles getting more sloppy as players tired and rage built up. Jaxxon Johns came on for Niles with 10 minutes to play, and almost made an immediate impact - sneaking the ball past Fraga before scuffing his shot into the arms of Arnal - but both sets of fans mentally started preparing for extra time.

Then, the game changed.

“Katzeburg need something soon if they want to continue on,” said Ben Workington of KBC as the clock hit the 85 minute mark.

“Maybe Plank can provide something magic again down this left hand side. Plank through to Johns. Johns holds it up, Fraga refusing to let him past. Back to Plank. Oh my, that’s a smart pass from the young midfielder - finding Arkwright in the middle.

“Arkwright, through to Wruck - great bit of skill there, this could be a chance for Katzeburg with a quick break. Fraga in the path, but Wruck will shoot from the edge of the box! DEFLECTED! Fraga does just enough in the way to block the shot and-

“Wait a minute, the referee has blown his whistle -PENALTY! Fraga is adjudged to have handballed the effort from Wruck. That seems very close, even by my biased standards as a Katzeburgian. And now Fraga is arguing with the referee here and will pick up a yellow for his outburst - what a tough call to go against you at such a crucial point in the game.”

Katzeburg had a penalty. A chance to pull ahead with little time left on the clock, a chance to book their ticket to the final eight. Drake Wruck, Katzeburg’s all-time leading scorer with a grand total of three goals, plopped the ball on the spot and took three large steps back.

Breathe In. Breathe Out. Breathe In. Breathe Out.

Silence fell around North Hampton Stadium as Wruck began his run up. Two leaps forward then a powerful shot towards the bottom right corner. Arnal dived. He picked the right way. His hands stretching out to his fullest extent. But the ball beat him to it, and buried itself into the back of the net, just out of grasp.

4-3.

Katzeburg went wild.

Celebrations across the north of the country were unlike anything anyone had experienced to date - the sound record broken earlier in the game at Katzestadt was close to doubled following the late penalty, while in Refeld, fire crews had to be called to nearby paddocks as flares lit in celebration had started a few too many fires.

But the game was not done yet, and Langenia still pushed. Galindo doing all he can to find a winner - and the captain came close too, firing a short squared ball from Joel Rodriguez over the bar as the clock hit 90.

But Katzeburg held firm - slowing down the play just enough to run out the clock and secure a famous victory, sending the side to the final eight of the Baptism of Fire in their first ever international competition.

‘Our tweaks paid off’ - Haberkorn looking to spring more surprises

In her post-match interview, Becka Haberkorn paid tribute to the outgoing Langenian side in what was “the toughest game we’ve had yet” but Katzeburg’s success stemmed from a positive tactical change.

“We started much brighter than we have in any other game,” she said. “I think that was down to the wider flexibility we gave ourselves and the desire to exploit the flanks a lot more than we did in previous games.

“Once we opened up, we found ourselves a lot more comfortable with the ball and it showed in the goals Drake and Lambert scored.

“It was a little worrying to give up that many goals, but Langenia are a great side with an incredible future ahead of them, I think we got a little bit lucky that our tweaks paid off in the manner they did.”

Are Katzeburg dreaming of a maiden trophy?

Analysis from Rick Tennant from KBC’s Goal!

If you had told me after Katzeburg’s loss to Alexandrianonisimo the side would be 90 minutes away from a semi final at the Baptism of Fire, I would have laughed you right out of the room. The side looked bleak, not ready for the demands of international football, and not there alongside the mix of nations like Restresas, West Vdara, or Edsmontik.

But the Blue Cats persist. The side are in the hat for the final eight and while they face the toughest challenge yet - a return to their home away from home of Capital Stadium to face the overall #1 seed West Vdara - there is a sense of optimism starting to creep in.

Katzeburg seem to be at their best when the odds are against them - as the match momentum began to shift to Langenia, the Blue Cats pulled goals out of nowhere to swing the game the other way. It’s a never say die attitude the side seems to have fostered, and while their run is likely to end next round against a West Vdara side which has yet to concede a single goal this campaign - Katzeburg can be done proud by the side’s run to the last eight, and anything further is a mere cherry on top.

Penntop locals band together to create giant statue of Katzeburgian striker

By Coby Franklin

Amidst the hangovers and celebrations stemming from last night’s win over Langenia to book the sides spot in the final eight of the Baptism of Fire, a group of Penntop locals have spent the night celebrating in another way.

Members of the Penntop Lumber Crafters Society worked through the night to craft a giant wooden sculpture of Katzeburgian forward Drake Wruck to commemorate the occasion and the special status this run has made on so many within the region.

Standing more than 4 metres in height and weighing close to 300 kilos, the statue entitled ‘Joy’ shows Wruck celebrating after scoring the winning penalty against Langenia.

“Well, we had a few drinks after the game as a group and one of us said, ‘how do we make this into something special?’,” said Tre Hugger, leader of the PLCS.

Image

“Someone else joked we should make a big wooden statue, and by the time we thought we should get some sleep ahead of today’s work, we had already cut out half the damn thing.

“While we are a little disappointed to not see our own local star Brigitte Ball make the field last night, Wruck was immense, and this is just a small way to show what joy he and the rest of the team brings to us all.”

The statue will stand in the Campbellnia National Park for the rest of the tournament, with plans to auction the statue off for charity to anyone who is missing a giant wooden striker in their life once the national team returns home.

When asked about the offering at this morning’s team rounds, Drake Wruck beamed a huge smile. “It’s an incredible honour to have something like that made in your likeness,” he said.

“I wish I could buy it myself, but I think the home might be a little too small for that!”

Katzeburg travel to Hapilopper City to face top-seed West Vdara in the quarter final later this week.

An Act of Kindness, and An Act of Destruction.

January 1st, 1013:
Newton, Tumbra
Wesley, looking proud of his team, told them that "Boys, today is not a practice day, and I incentivize you to bring the loved ones you brought with you to this tournament with us today." Many confused looks shared the team hotel, before Marcus George broke the silence, and asked "But sir, what are we doing today?" Wesley chuckled and stated that "We wanted to give good face to the City of Newton before we leave tonight for Lakewood, so... as appreciation, we'll help make meals for the poor in the local food bank." Many were surprised, but then they learned about how many poor people, and the general problem with the poor that Newton has, and everyone was on board with the idea soon after.

After the long food bank experience, many were appreciative of how hard the people in this food bank worked, and they all chimed together a 10,000 Tumbran Dollar donation to the foodbank for their excellent work of helping the poor of the city get the food and supplies they need to survive day in and day out. On the way to Lakewood, the bus was not so much more cramped than it was very lively, as the added company of loved ones made the trip back to Lakewood much better and enjoyable, with plenty of conversation taking place. The main topic, how things are doing in Restresas, and with the general news not being about anything less than their journey, the Restresians looked a lot more calm when they learned that everything home is just fine.

January 4th, 1013:
Lakewood, Tumbra
"We don't know much about this team that Vaishnavaria has, so if we don't make the same mistakes we did, we'll be cruising to the Quarterfinals." Indiana said as last words before they emerged from the locker room before their Round of 16 encounter.

The Vaishnavarians were a team that emerged as the second to last team that qualified to the round of 16, and when they took the field to warmups, Elena Pablo, wife to Indiana, noted to the others in the VIP box that "these guys look really tired, they must have had some ugly matches heading into this one..." That form of tiredness showed when Restreesas kicked off, as although that the Vaishnavarians started with a shot on goal, that would be the only one they would have all game. The team's general exhaustion compared to Restresas's run heavy style meant that Vaishnavaria was not so lucky in terms of their RO16 opponent. The leaders since today were Tio Howard against Osterhalten, Indiana Pablo against The Holy See, and Pablo Albu against Hetaru, but today it was Lane Sanchez's turn to lead the team, as the goal in the 28th minute showed how deep and aggressive the Restresians can get, with the attack being led by the backs all game, an adjustment to make sure that they can keep the ball as much as they can. Another goal by the young Lane in the 33rd minute was the dagger of the game, but the aggression remained high all game, and when it was halftime, the Restresians led the Vaishnavarians by a margin of two to nothing.

The second half was more the same, minus the scoring part, as Restresas stalled time with monkey in the middle offense, frustrating the exhausted Vaishnavarians, who were forced to run more, causing early substitutions, with Vaishnavaria using up their last substitution in the 65th minute. These substitutions did help a bit, but Restresas remained firm in their gameplan, and continued to show why they are not to be messed with as a true BoF contender. The goal by Tio to put the nail in the coffin in the 83rd minute was enough to win the game for Restresas by a margin of three to nothing, a dominant destruction in the round of 16.

After the game, Lane, who won player of the game, said that "This was nothing, it just was unfortunate that they had to go through so much in their group stage matches, and to face a running team like us in the Round of 16. But you face who you are assigned to, and we just did what we usually do, and it was more than enough to win." The young Lane knew that the road ahead was tough, but the team remained hopeful as their road crossed paths with The Godlands in the quarterfinals, a matchup that must be watched due to how vertical both teams are.
