Nuclear Fusion: Possible?

Postby Seishin no Ryuu » Wed Aug 12, 2009 1:57 pm

In my opinion, Nuclear Fusion is possible, we just haven't reached the level of technology needed. I am interested to hear the opinions of all the NS players(Who I know are intelligent in their own way)

For those of you who don't really know what I'm talking about please reference this page:

Nuclear fusion is possible. In fact, we've already achieved it. The island of Bikini Atol is proof positive of that fact.

What you're talking about is containable, sustainable, energy efficient fusion, which is another animal all together

Bah, nuclear fusion was achieved billions and billions of years ago.

IF you mean nuclear fusion as a means to vaporize cities, its been around forever.

As for nuclear fusion as a means of generating electricity? I think it will always be "20 years in the future" because the science has reached a dead-end and we simply will never beable to break the laws of physics enough to make it a sustainable, positive-energy source.

I have a theory I developed during my numerous thought experiments, but I can't really put it into words, but I'll try. *takes a deep breath* Nanotechnology, meaning microscopic robots, could theoretically be used to draw in atoms and fuse them together(like a microscopic magnet) That's about all I can put into words at this time.

Nuclear fusion is older than the planet itself. I would say that makes it possible.
A little homework for you!

What part of L(f(t)) = Int(exp(-s*t)*f(t),t,0,inf) don't you understand?

Well, that would be impossible, since a nanomachine could never have the power to overcome the forces of atomic bonds to create fusion in such a manner.

If it did, which it could not, energy could simply be generated by having those unimaginably powerful nanomachines to turn a wheel to create electricity and just skip the middle man.

That's the part I'm working on, You see when I say microscopic, A better word would be sub-atomic, if a nanomachine was small enough to enter an atomic nucleus, it could conceivably attach a sub-atomic "tow line" and forcibly pull the atoms together. Like I said I'm still working on it, but that's the "very" simplified idea.

Of course its possible. Its even possible for humans to initiate. AFAIK, we're not quite up to controlling it in any meaningful way as yet, but I'm sure we'll work something out.

The only way to do that would be to distort space time to an incredibly huge degree. Large enough that you might end up creating black holes. I don't know, how massive are these big machines going to be?
A little homework for you!

Is this the idea to create a small sun in a box and harness the energy? I heard the main problem was finding a tough enough material for the box to contain the sun.
Um it could occur but realistically not for maybe 10-20 years at least. maybe longer before it gets used by the public directly.
