The Far-Right's Young New Leaders
The following is an extract from the Times of Tasik Lembut. The full, formatted article can be located at https://tsm.pk/20240429/13.html
Written by Maria Tukang, translated for the Free News Project by Mikael Smith-Kesser
Tam Petani is not the stereotypical image one has of an ultra-nationalist. Soft-spoken and polite, I was pleasantly surprised by his manner when we met in a Gaullican-style coffee-house in the Kastell district of Tasik Lembut. He asked me how the metro ride over was, crammed, whether I wanted a coffee, a macchiato, and we discussed FV Heilige Maria’s chances in the ailing Pen Lig, not good. All in all, had I not been aware of his online activity, then young Mr Petani would have seemed like any other university student.
But, I did know of his online handle.
Tam Petani, 20, is better known online as Taufan, the mononymous leader of a group of Ultra-Nationalists known colloquially as the Brothers’ Group for Liberty and Justice. Having reached infamy when provocateur and hip-hop artist Enye shared a series of video essays published by members of the group about the decadence founded in Euclea and calling for a return to traditional values, the group now primarily operates through online spaces and through small speaking engagements at Pelangi Unity events.
The far-right party entered the House of Deputies for the first time in 2018, and only furthered their position in 2022. Historically associated with the so-called Greater Pelangi State idea (or the proposed union of Kabu, Penduk, Surubon and Capuria into a single entity ruled from Tasik Lembut, ostensibly to throw off colonial influence from Dezevau and Euclea), the party has softened greatly since achieving federal success. But the radical right continues to exist online, and it is not fuelled by angry old men, but disaffected youngsters.
“The whole system is run by the left,” Petani explained to me, “Maybe not the politicians, but our teachers, our parents, the news, the media, your whole life, you grow up being taught to be ashamed of your heritage and to embrace new ideas from Euclea. But we are poor, many of us still are poor, I had to get a scholarship to go to University and even then I work five days a week to pay rent while I study.”
“But we are told we are the problem, and that the only solution is to import homosexuality and shame from Euclea.”
“I do not want to be ashamed of being Penduk. I love my country. I love my people. I just wish that we could experience our own culture without the media demanding we feel bad for not being progressive enough for white people and northern socialists.”
When I pressed Petani on anti-minority posts he’d made online, including some that made use of slurs, he responded with words to the effect of, “I do not hate foreigners. But I just want my people to be taken care of first. The government needs to focus on making this country great and helping the people in it before we virtue signal to the world.”
Petani’s views, especially those shared under his handle of Taufun, are xenophobic and offensive, but it is not difficult to see where he and his comrades are coming from. Many are disaffected and disadvantaged, who see the nationalist cause as a way to strike back at what they view as the upper-class in socialists and Euclean immigrants. Petani spoke candidly to me about receiving death threats after he was doxed late last year, but declined to comment when I asked if he had made similar threats to youth groups on the far left.
It is clear that the far-right has a new image in Penduk, but whether we will be able to address the social and economic causes behind the radicalisation of our youth remains unknown.
